Major store set for Swan Walk Matthew James News Editor

Fun and tragedy in the cold The irst major snow of the winter was welcomed by children, but the cold weather has also been linked to a tragedy on a lake. Denne Hill, Horsham, was a popular choice for fun-seekers with sledges on Sunday, while others built snowmen and even a snow-based Formula 1 car. But Tim Waddingham, 53, of Guildford Road, Rudgwick, drowned in a freezing lake at Wildwood Golf and Country Club, Alford, as he took his dog for a walk on Sunday morning. Mr Waddingham, owner of a classic car restoration company, was attempting to rescue his Labrador from the frozen lake.
BBC Sussex reported that the dog survived and returned home, effectively alerting Mr Waddingham’s wife Sarah. She then retraced his steps on the routine walk and found some of his clothes next to the lake. As forecasters said the freezing weather was set to continue, ireighters issued advice and warnings to residents across the county. Jackie Boyle, of West Sussex Fire and Rescue, said before news of Mr Waddingham’s death emerged: “We know areas of frozen water can be inviting, especially for children. Continued on Page 3
One of the country’s biggest sports retailers is set to move into Swan Walk, as change at the Horsham shopping centre continues apace. Work to create a new Sports Direct store will start at the end of this month, with the grand opening scheduled for late spring or early summer. Swan Walk manager Gill Buchanan told www.the-resident.co.uk on Wednesday: “The new store will incorporate just over three existing stores in the mall leading to Wilkinson. “We are delighted to be able to announce this. There are no other largeformat specialist sports stores in Horsham and we have worked hard to meet the interest and demand from our retailers to open up a store of this kind.”

Mrs Buchanan said the coup provided further evidence of Swan Walk’s ongoing commitment to create the right space for its retailers. Although other shops have closed, recent additions have included Fat Face and The Real Eating Company. A spokesman for Aviva Investors said: “These lettings demonstrate how Horsham as a retail destination has remained fairly resilient, despite the current economic climate. “Sports Direct is a new retailer for the town centre and we are conident it will bring beneits to customers and businesses alike.” Continued on Page 5

“While it may look safe, there is no way of knowing how thick the ice is or whether it will hold your weight, so it’s best to simply stay clear of it. “It is really important for parents to explain to their children the dangers of playing or skating on frozen water. “For dog owners, the safest option is to keep your dogs on a lead so they can’t run out onto the ice. “If you do see an animal in difficulty, don’t attempt to rescue it yourself. If the ice is too thin to support a dog’s weight, it certainly won’t support yours, so call 999 and let us deal with it. “With the onset of the extreme cold, many of us are spending more time indoors, keeping as warm as possible. “Understandably, some people may be turning to extra heat sources such as electric blankets and portable heaters to keep out the winter chill, but these bring with them an increased risk of fire in your home. “We recommend people take a few simple precautions to ensure they stay safe as well as warm during this cold snap. “Older residents can be particularly vulnerable in cold weather, so it is especially important for friends, relatives and neighbours to keep an eye out for them.” Although the snow was nowhere near as heavy as at times in the previous two winters, the cold weather was blamed for burst water pipes, including one at a house in Leechpool Lane, Horsham, and another in East Street, West Chiltington. Horsham District Council is not directly responsible for public highways and walkways, but its staff helped clear snow and gritted pavements and main thoroughfares in Horsham town centre. The RSPB is urging people to provide food, water and shelter for garden birds. High-energy foods such as worms are out of reach when the ground becomes too hard, and seeds and berries become inaccessible in severe weather. For more information, visit www. rspb.org.uk/advice

Housing consultation is ‘not clear enough’ A consultation on house-building in the next 20 years has been criticised by a senior politician. Horsham District Council will consult from today (Friday) until April 10 on four options following a report by GL Hearn, described by a council spokesman as “the most experienced company in this field”. These allow for 590, 635, 670 and 730 homes per year, but the council says it will consider “other reasoned options” if these are backed up by
data and evidence. Cllr David Holmes, leader of the council’s Liberal Democrat group, said: “This report offers the community a choice of building 590 or around 730 houses per annum. I do not see that as being much of a choice. “The effect of the choice is between 4.5 per cent and eight per cent growth in employment over 20 years. I do not see that as being much of a choice either. “People probably wish to choose

between a Horsham town and district staying much the same as it is now or becoming a significantly more vibrant place, offering many more facilities. “I do not think it will be clear to people how the options in this document relate to that choice. “People need options that give significantly different outcomes and they need to understand what each would provide. “People need to know what increased employment is likely to mean
– advantages and disadvantages. “I do not think we should be proposing to build 12,000 houses or 14,000 houses over the next 20 years. We should adopt a short-term strategy and in the previous words of this council ‘monitor and manage’. “We should monitor economic growth and demand and decide how to respond as we go forward. “The market mechanisms are far more complex than have so far been modelled.”

People in Horsham district can attend public exhibitions to find out more about plans for an offshore wind farm. About 13km off the Sussex coast at its nearest point, the wind farm would feature between 100 and 195 turbines and generate enough electricity to supply the equivalent of 450,000 homes. Chris Tomlinson, E.ON development manager for the project, said: “We’re delighted to be able to present our draft proposals for the Rampion project. “I’ve been really encouraged by the response we’ve had to the development so far and I’m excited to be able to discuss the project in more detail with the local community. “With a population of over 1.5 million, Sussex has a huge demand for electricity. The Rampion wind farm offers a unique opportunity for us to make a valuable contribution to securing our electricity supplies for the future.” Public information events will be held at many venues in Sussex, including the Steyning Centre on Wednesday, February 29 (12-8pm), and Henfield Village Hall on Tuesday, March 27 (11am-6:30pm). You can have your say on the proposal by completing a questionnaire at one of the public exhibitions, online at www.eon-uk.com/rampion or by post to Freepost Rampion Offshore Wind Farm. Schools’ support for Paralympians Jade Brewster Tanbridge House School, Y10
Three Paralympic hopefuls have received a total of £2,000 raised by Tanbridge House School and local primary schools. Arunside, Castlewood, Queen Elizabeth II, St Mary’s, Shelley, Shoreham Beach, Southwater Infant, Southwater Junior and Warnham were invited back to Tanbridge House to see the hopefuls and share in the excitement of the upcoming Games. The money was generated through Tanbridge House’s Paralympic Day in September last year, which followed Lord Coe’s visit on an Olympic Day last May. Emma Wiggs (GB women’s sitting volleyball) attended both the
Olympic and Paralympic days and helped organise the latter event. She received £750, with another £750 going to her team. Knut Kursawe (coach for GB goalball) and Seb Trezise (GB discus) received £250 each. Wiggs, Kursawe and Trezise were thrilled and said the money would help pay for travel and accommodation at preparation events. They were presented with their cheques by three of Tanbridge House’s 16 Young Games Makers, who will help at the sitting volleyball during the Paralympics. The presentation assembly also included the launch of a new poster competition, open to children and adults across Horsham. Fire merger put on hold West Sussex County Council and East Sussex Fire Authority have abandoned plans for a full merger in April next year. But they say a merger “remains the desired way forward if government funding and financial issues can be resolved”. And the two authorities have pledged to work closely together to deliver savings and efficiencies. Cllr Pete Bradbury, West Sussex County Council Cabinet member, said: “It is frustrating that the timing of the government’s resource review creates this problem. “The findings of the business case and public support, coupled with the knowledge that finances are likely to get even tighter, shows how closer collaboration and joint working between the two services is both necessary and desirable. “We have already started on this work, not least with the decision last December to create a single joint mobilising and communications centre. “Until the position on a full merger becomes clear, we will consider all other ways to achieve the financial and operational benefits of collaboration short of a merger, while minimising the impact on services to the public.”

Centre changes Continued from Page 1 Meanwhile, a petition has been launched in a bid to stop the planned closure of Bonmarché, West Street. The Resident has been told that more than 1,000 people have already signed a Save Our Shop petition in the store – even though management removed a notice asking people to sign it and staff have been told not to speak to the media. A spokesman for the Wakefieldbased company, which sells plussize clothing for women, said: “The decline in customer spend in the current climate, coupled with rising costs, has made trading very difficult. “It is intended that the business will trade from approximately 230 stores, thereby providing continued employment to approximately 2,400 employees in the UK. “In order to ensure that the company can be placed on a sound economic footing, it is anticipated that approximately 160 stores will be closed. “The Horsham store is currently earmarked for closure. However, such stores are being constantly reviewed and careful consideration given. We do not have confirmed dates as yet of when Horsham will be closing. “We are in discussions with landlords and councils to reduce costs and improve town amenities. “We are looking at the convenience of the customer and the distance she will have to travel to an open store. The nearest open store is currently Crawley. “We will endeavour to relocate staff to vacancies in neighbouring stores.”

Election
Who will have the X Factor as 5 do battle for council votes? Five candidates will contest the Horsham District Council by-election for Itchingfield, Slinfold and Warnham next week. David Hide (Labour), Justin Pickard (Green), Stuart Ritchie (Conservative), Ian Shepherd (Liberal Democrat) and George Tribe (UKIP) have been nominated to fight the election on Thursday, February 16. Three of the five candidates also fought the election in the same ward
last May. Voters will decide who replaces former Tory councillor Robert Nye, who resigned as leader of the council and as a councillor in December, citing personal reasons related to the finances of his business. Mr Nye’s resignation means the Conservatives have 33 district councillors, with eight Liberal Democrats, two Independents and one vacant seat.
‘I have no desire to join the cosy club’ David Hide Labour I am standing to provide the residents of Itchingfield, Slinfold and Warnham with a real choice. The choice is between the Tory and Lib Dem agenda of cutting services for the sake of cuts and an alternative that looks at managing council revenues to ensure efficient delivery of important services.
This is an opportunity to elect an independent-minded representative. I have no desire to join the cosy club that runs Horsham District Council. The Conservative-run council regularly counts on the support of the Lib Dems when pushing through unpopular decisions. The Lib Dems are supposed to be the opposition, yet they often vote with their Conservative colleagues. I feel this is bad for democracy and has led to poor decision-making, more often than not resulting in you and I picking up the bill for
the council’s mistakes. Just look at the massive overspend on the Acorn Recycling scheme. Surely it is not the role of the opposition to praise the leader of the council, as the Lib Dem leader did following Robert Nye’s resignation, not least at a time when the policies the council has been pursuing have brought about an unprecedented level of discontent. I state unequivocally that I would vote in favour of retaining Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. We are the only party to have publicly stated this ahead of the by-election.
I will oppose large-scale developments that do not deliver a minimum of 50 per cent affordable housing. We have consistently opposed large-scale developments while the Tories voted unanimously in favour of dumping 2,000 homes west of Horsham. I will defend public services against the cuts being pursued by the Tories and Liberal Democrats. Voting Labour makes the strongest possible statement that you wish to save Broadbridge Heath Leisure centre from the bulldozers.
‘I feel it is important to challenge received wisdoms’ Justin Pickard Green As the Green Party candidate for this by-election, I’m not a natural politician. But I can see that one more Conservative or Lib Dem councillor won’t make a difference. In this by-election, I want to prove that Green politics isn’t just the guilt-driven masochism of hairshirt ecologists or the husky-hugging of a greenwashed Conservative Party. For me, Green politics is about the benefits of a longer-term view. Here and now, in 2012, we’re looking at a decade of stagnating incomes and extreme volatility. Following the driest 12 months since 1976, Ardingly Reservoir stands at less than 50 per cent capacity. The local high street faces challenges from internet shopping and out-of-town supermarkets. Meanwhile, people are hit with record increases in train fares and energy bills. Sometimes it seems like Horsham is simply a dormitory town for London. Surely we can envisage a brighter future for the district. With strong transport links to Gatwick, Brighton and the capital, we stand in an excellent position to sow the seeds of a truly resilient community – more than capable of meeting the threats and challenges of the coming years. In terms of policy, this means working to attract skilled jobs in key emerging industries. It means re-localising the provision of energy, food and banking. It means fighting for affordable housing, opposing the privatisation of public services, and recognising the false economies of cuts and austerity. I know my position might not be perfectly in tune with the currents of local opinion, but I feel it is important to challenge the received wisdoms which underpin the current way of doing things. If this sounds like a message you can get behind, please consider voting Green on February 16.

Election
‘Horsham district is a great place to live’ ‘I have Stuart Ritchie Conservative I am excited at the prospect of becoming a Horsham district councillor as there is much to do to preserve all that is great about Horsham and its district and to enhance the facilities available whenever possible. I have lived in Horsham from my
early childhood and in Warnham for over 20 years, having attended school at Tanbridge House and then The College of Richard Collyer. As a parish councillor since 1999, I have helped develop a number of initiatives, particularly for young people, and supported the 20 mph zone through the centre of Warnham to make roads safer, especially for children in the village. I am very concerned by the recently announced proposals for more housing north of Horsham and by the potential closure of the Broadbridge
Heath Leisure Centre. While recognising changes happen, I will seek to ensure all viewpoints are properly taken into account and only carefully considered changes take place. I support the fight for a new hospital, with an accident and emergency department, for Horsham and Crawley. As one of 8,000 entrepreneurs in the Horsham district and with a background in finance, I am very keen to see the best value for money for local council taxpayers.
I welcome the decision of the Conservative-controlled Horsham District Council to freeze council tax for the second successive year and to maintain weekly refuse collections. Being active in our local community is a great joy to me, my wife Caroline and our young son Matthew. For us, Warnham and the Horsham district is a great place to live. If elected, I look forward to serving the wider local community and in representing the interests of all residents in Itchingfield (and Barns Green), Slinfold and Warnham.
‘A chance for residents to send a message’ Ian Shepherd Liberal Democrat This by-election is not just about electing a councillor – though I have been a councillor and know how to serve local residents. It is also a chance for local residents to send a message and show their anger to the Conservatives who run the council.
May 2011 result
Most people I have spoken to have raised one issue – Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre! They don’t understand how the council could even think about closing the centre without knowing how many people use it, without a clear view of the costs of outstanding maintenance and without offering any alternative facilities. People have raised other issues too. Rising parking charges in the town centre and their effect on people from our villages, the attempt to sell off Horsham’s historic town
hall and the money wasted on consultants – the most recent being the report on leisure facilities in the district. The council has been spending its reserves for years, while cutting back on important things like maintenance, to keep council tax down. I am not against low council tax, but I also want to see decent services available for everyone and I want to encourage everyone to look after their health. To do that, people need good leisure facilities on their doorstep.
Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre is on our doorstep – and it will be on the doorstep of around 5,000 more people once the new homes are built to the west of Horsham. I live in the ward, my family experiences the problems local residents experience. I would value the chance to serve my community and try to solve those problems. I promise that, if elected on February 16, I will vote against closure of the leisure centre unless and until a better centre is built nearby.

never been reluctant to state the truth’ George Tribe UKIP It is patently obvious that Horsham District Council (HDC) desperately needs people of principle, who can think clearly, have no prejudices and understand that the mantra “if you build lots of houses you will create lots of jobs” is pure bilge. I have never been reluctant to state the truth about matters of principle and policy. I am well-versed over the housing issue as a consequence of my deep involvement with the CPRE and Sussex Ramblers and appear to be one of the few people in the district to realise that neither the Conservatives nor the Liberal Democrats dared to discuss this at the last district council elections in May 2011. I would never have tolerated the disgraceful situation whereby HDC allowed the matter of residential sites for gypsy families within the district to drift aimlessly. This resulted in the imposition of a settlement in West Chiltington Lane, Barns Green, of 11 caravans following an appeal decision by a government inspector. Such incompetence and stupidity is an affront to the electorate. Without doubt, matters should be ordered differently and better. We are all well aware that if Donald Duck wearing a blue rosette was a candidate in this election a lot of people would cast their votes for him. However, this sort of mind-set is surely not likely to result in good local government. I believe that the United Kingdom should never have entered the European Union (EU) when we severed important links to much of the world. Now we have important links to a collapsing, corrupt organisation that seems incapable of managing its financial affairs. That situation of course pre-dates the recent banking crisis. The EU has never had its accounts signed off by a competent authority. It is likely not many people know that.

Make your mark on a heart Shoppers in Swan Walk will be invited to leave their mark on a heart this Valentine’s Day, February 14. Horsham-based Winston’s Wish, the charity for bereaved children, will ask members of the public to leave their fingerprint on a heart and hang it from an archway as they walk through and think of someone they love. The charity, which offers practical support and guidance to bereaved children, their families and professionals, recently moved to Horsham and is keen to create awareness in the local community of the support services available.
Since Winston’s Wish launched in the county in 2006, it has supported more than 500 families across West Sussex. Youngsters at Billingshurst Primary School had fun celebrating the Chinese Year of the Dragon. They learned to lion dance, wore traditional Chinese clothes and tasted Chinese food donated by China Brasserie 2 in the village. School spokesman Alison Wood said: “The children have had a lovely afternoon learning to lion dance and it has been very interesting to learn about the different representation that each food has.” Don Burstow and Mr Yee, of China Brasserie 2, said: “We are pleased to have been able to broaden the children’s knowledge.”

Southwater church appeal is hotting up A new heating system has been installed at a church after parishioners raised £25,000. But the Church of the Holy Innocents, Southwater, is continuing its Turn Up The Heat appeal as it needs another £25,000 for extra work at the Grade II listed building. Rev Kesari Godfrey said he was overwhelmed by the efforts made to raise money and the generosity of villagers and the public. He said: “The Turn Up The Heat appeal has really helped us to become a focus for the village once more as we brought back exciting events such as the summer fair and barbecue. “We hope to build on this. Already we are planning a special thanksgiving event for later this year.” Churchwarden Debbie Moore said: “It was a huge amount of work and we are so pleased the new system is working well, but there is still much to do and we urgently need to raise
further funds.” Initial professional estimates for the replacement of an oil-powered system with a modern conventional oil-fired boiler and heating system gave an indicative cost of £30,000. This included replacement radiators and pipes, an efficient new boiler and an oil storage tank. The total cost of £50,000 includes the bringing in of mains water to the church for the first time, professional fees, electrical work, trenching and adjustments to church furniture. Norman Carreck, of the International Bee Research Association, will speak at the church on Thursday, February 16 (7.30pm), answering the question: Do bees matter? Tickets are £7, including a glass of wine, with proceeds going to Turn Up The Heat. Phone 01403 733982, visit Stems the Florist in Lintot Square or pay on the door.
Stable raided Pub punch-up Police are investigating a breakin at a stable in Broadwater Lane, Horsham. A police spokesman said: “Strangely, the stable door was unscrewed and stolen, along with numerous items of horse equipment – training halters, lead ropes, head collars, grooming kits and riding boots. “A purple wheelbarrow has been located next to a field in Grouse Road, Horsham, with one of the grooming kits.” The break-in happened between 5.30pm on Thursday, February 2, and 7.30am the following morning. Phone police on 101, quoting serial 198 of February 3.
Police were called after reports of gypsies attending a wake at The Star pub, Crawley Road, Roffey, following a funeral in the Crawley area. Sgt James Makepeace said: “I am pleased to say there were no reports of any crime or disorder during the wake. “Some local shop owners decided to close as a result of the wake. This was not in response to any reported damage or disorder, but through concern of anticipated problems. “Police later received a call from the landlord of The Star to say a fight had broken out, but when police arrived the fight had stopped.”

Gimme, gimme, gimme a woman Top European – or thousands – after midnight Local ladies are being asked to sign up for the St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk in Horsham. Sponsored by Welland Medical, the women-only half marathon walk will raise money to provide hospice care and support for patients and their loved ones. The July 14 event is a chance for ladies of all ages to make a difference by teaming up with friends, family, work or school friends. Laura Ryan, volunteer events fundraising assistant, said: “This is a great event to encourage your friends, family and colleagues to do something that is not only a bit of a challenge but also means they can support a great local cause.” Although the Midnight Walk is ladies-only, men are encouraged to show their support by volunteering as event marshals for the night. About £565,000 has been raised from similar walks in four previous years. Last year more than 1,000 women strode out in style on the 13mile course, which starts and finishes at Horsham Park, raising £145,000. Entry is £15. Every walker will receive a Midnight Walk t-shirt,
refreshments, medal and breakfast at the finish line. Enter online at www.stch.org. uk/midnightwalk or phone 01293 447364 for an entry form. Handcross Park School will stage the hospice’s ninth Sussex Weald Bike Ride on Sunday, May 20. Phone 01293 447364 or visit www.stch.org. uk/bikeride The hospice also wants to hear from garden owners who are willing to open their gates to the public. Community fundraiser Barbara Dryden said: “Every year, dozens of private garden owners help support the work of St Catherine’s Hospice by opening their gates to the general public, raising £20,000 in vital income that supports care and comfort when it is needed most. “We would love more gardens from the Horsham area for our programme this summer. Whatever style or size garden you may have, if you take pride in your work and would like to share it with others while helping the local community, please contact me.” Phone 01293 447319, email barbaradryden@stch.org.uk or visit www.stch.org.uk/opengardens

Teeing up a cash bonanza at Slinfold A golf day and party night will be held to raise money for research into a rare group of diseases. Slinfold Golf and Country Club is preparing to host the event in aid of the UCL Amyloidosis Research Fund on Friday, March 30. Amyloidosis is a usually-fatal group of diseases caused by the build-up of abnormal protein fibres (or fibrils) in tissues and organs throughout the body. Almost any organ can be affected, so the symptoms vary greatly and diagnosis can be very difficult. It affects about one person in every 1,000. Prof Philip Hawkins, of the National Amyloidosis Centre at University
College London, said: “There are currently several very promising lines of research in the centre. “The resources provided by the Amyloidosis Research Fund, through the generosity of donors, will undoubtedly make major contributions to alleviating the suffering and saving the lives of many thousands.” Horsham resident Martin BoltonSmith, whose wife Cheryl was diagnosed with a form of Amyloidosis, wants people to sign up for a fourball better ball at Slinfold, sponsor him for a speed-golf challenge and donate prizes for a raffle. For more information, phone Mr Bolton-Smith on 07834 724320.
One of the MEPs for Horsham district has been re-elected as chairman of a powerful committee. Liberal Democrat MEP Sharon Bowles remains chairman of the European Parliament’s economic and monetary affairs committee, regarded as the Parliament’s most powerful. She said: “I am grateful to all colleagues for their support and am sure we will continue to be an engine for ideas and policy-making as we face the sovereign crisis and the need for growth. “I take very seriously the responsibilities of chair and will be at the forefront of efforts to re-engage the UK and put it at the heart of Europe.”

Work started on Monday to install safety barriers and make other improvements on the A24 between the Findon and Washington roundabouts. West Sussex County Council’s highways contractor Balfour Beatty expects work on the £75,000 scheme to take about six weeks. Lane 1 (nearside) was due to be closed north and southbound for about one week, with lane 2 closed north and southbound for about five weeks.
Horsham Trinity footballers Crit Rufolo, Tony Gasson and Mark Rice will take part in the Hastings Half Marathon on March 25. The West Sussex Teachers’ Association (NUT) has restated its opposition to academies and free schools in the county. It condemned West Sussex County Council for “failing to address the educational needs of Southwater”, instead allowing “the fundamentalist Oasis group to propose an experimental free school which will not even be required to employ qualified teachers”. District secretary Dave Thomas said a minority of West Sussex schools had been forced to become academies regardless of the views of staff or parents.

Young people need the enriching opportunity to learn with those who have a faith different to their own and also with those with no faith. As it stands, the proposal is likely to be divisive rather than inclusive. It may well be the forerunner of a variety of different faith schools. Give our future young people the opportunity to learn together.
Help with family history I am trying to establish a link with members of the various Flux families living along or near the south coast of England, where the name is fairly popular. The link needs to be with the Oxfordshire villages of Filkins, Langford, Lechlade and Farringdon, with such names as James Flux and Anne
Davis who married in 1779, and their children Elizabeth and Richard. James Flux married Mary Garlick in 1853 and John Flux married Emma Baker in 1877. I feel sure there must be Flux family historians in your area trying to establish the link, but in their case it is from the south towards Oxfordshire. I would very much appreciate it if they would contact me at allux@ hotmail.com or 01484 716280.

Don’t forget our veterans No sympathy for Maggie Is snow really such a shock? in debate over pensions James Monaghan White Horse Court, Storrington
The issue of public service pensions has been very much to the fore in the media over recent weeks, yet there is one body of public servants who continue to be denied any pension whatsoever. Affected veterans of the UK Armed Forces did not work normal office hours, indeed invariably worked very unsocial hours. They were often separated from their families, had no right to withdraw their labour or take any form of
industrial action, and were prepared to lay down their lives in defence of UK national interests. The Forgotten Veterans’ pleas to government for a meaningful discussion of these matters have continued to be ignored for well over 20 years. Government claims that to allow settlement of this long outstanding issue would simply be unaffordable do not stand scrutiny. It all boils down to where public expenditure priorities lie. Service veterans do not appear to warrant any consideration. The good news is that the inaugural meeting of an all-party parliamentary group has been held.
Derek McMillan Meadowgate, Horsham
For some, she was Thatcher, the Milk Snatcher. For others, she was The Blessed Margaret. For Meryl Streep, she was the Iron Lady in meltdown, a demented old woman recalling her glory days and haunted by the comical ghost of Denis Thatcher. A first-class actor like Streep can make the most unpromising of villains appear to have a sympathetic side. And of course she does. As well as eliciting sympathy for Thatcher’s declining years and mental instability, she portrays her as a “woman in a man’s world”, striking a
blow for women’s rights. However, there are many women – miners’ wives, Argentine widows of war, the millions who stood up against the poll tax (and I could go on) – who are not quite sure Thatcher was a crusader for women’s rights. She was a crusader for Margaret Hilda Thatcher. And if that meant trampling on men or women, she was indifferent. And what about Thatcher’s less likeable abiding hatred of the working classes – the miners, the poll tax protesters and practically the whole city of Liverpool? That seems to have remained on the cutting room floor. Thatcherites don’t talk about class war. They are too busy waging it.
Beware the tumbleweed Why now is the time to back AP Cobb Macleod Road, Horsham
I don’t know how Mrs Buchanan can say they have a very strong town centre team (The Resident, January 27). I have lived in Horsham all my life and I think it is a disgrace. First of all, Swan Walk has had a big slice of shops boarded up. Every time you go to the town, another one has gone. They only seem to fill every
vacant place with a café! How many more are we going to have? It’s no good putting up the charge for parking. That drives people to Crawley and other towns. And now, to crown it all, the horrid globe has gone up the shoot for the umpteenth time. What an utter waste of money and space. So much has been wasted on that monstrosity, it’s unreal. We were in town this morning and it was really quiet, not like the good old days. We say look out for the tumbleweeds.
our struggling football club Lewis Lathey Lanyon Close, Horsham
The first decade of the 21st Century was a good one for Horsham football. Promotion out of the Sussex County League followed by promotion to the Ryman Premier Division, and I’m sure that everyone remembers the amazing FA Cup run of 2007-8. But now fortune has turned into fate. At the end of the 2010-1 season,
Horsham were in a financial state, with almost the whole squad leaving. The departures of Horsham legends John Maggs and Gary Charman soon followed. It was clear to everyone that the 2011-2 season was going to be a tough one. Horsham are now on the brink of relegation, which just a few years ago would have seemed unreal. The Hornets and manager Hugo Langton need everyone’s support, so get down to Gorings Mead.

From my own experiences – and despite the claims of climate denialists – Britain does not exist in a tropical zone. Nor has it ever, not in the long history of this green and pleasant land, failed to experience a series of seasons. So what is there within the mindset of the modern public which leads them to express shock and surprise that it should snow or that such atmospheric inclemency should aggravate their plans in travel and opportunity? We really should get a grip – and not just underfoot – and embrace the reality that at some point in the passage of the year we will experience snow. We are extremely fortunate to live in the South. Every year, we read the claims regarding European countries which manage far better during the winter. Do we imagine that councils and governments in foreign countries have some special powers over their winters? Can we not imagine that they realise snow is going to happen, so each individual makes an effort to be prepared. Prepared for clearing the snow from their driveways and paths – without some passer-by suggesting that those clearing the snow may be sued by those not paying attention to the icy conditions. Prepared for driving with appropriate tyre pressure and tyre accessories. Prepared for services to be interrupted and delayed. By the time this article is printed, much or all of the snow will have melted and the calamities of the weather will have been forgotten, though no doubt there will be a few local snowmen pictured within. We are well past the point where winter is coming. Winter is here and we have within us the opportunity to change the expectations and experiences of this season. We should not expect a council to step in and resolve every pavement and road clearance. If you can make the effort to clear your own drive and pathway, then go a little further than before and clear the road before your driveway. Check with your neighbours and friends, especially with those who do not own transport, if they need to get into town or have a shopping run carried out. If you are planning on making a snow day of it, then give some thought to where you sledge and don’t break property or parking by-laws in your urgent need for excitement. Let us embrace the cold, chase the snow and face the fact that winter will happen. Just like autumn festivals and Christmas fairs, this is a season that will come around again and we have the chance to change the outcome if we care to.

Tea party raises £150 for Cancer Research

The Cancer Research shop on West Street, in Horsham, has hosted a tea party to celebrate the charity’s 10th anniversary. The day of fundraising was based on an Alice in Wonderland-style tea party, and raised £150 for research into cancer. Clare Hartield, manager at the shop, said: “It was such a fun day, we have a good team of volunteers and we couldn’t do it without their help. The support from the public has been amazing too.” Clare and volunteers dressed up for the day. Members of the public were offered cupcakes, tea and party food as a thank you for their support. Customers could also take part in a tombola. The shop is looking to hire a fundraising volunteer to help organise more events like the tea party. If you can spare a few hours a week and are able to call, email and meet people to help with the planning, contact Clare on 01403 210838.

Planning ahead in business – why it matters In the second of her columns for The Resident, business expert Janette Whitney looks at the importance of looking ahead today to ensure success tomorrow
No-one sets off on a journey without knowing where they are going and having a pretty good idea of how to get there. Business is the same. You need to plan in the first place, but you also need to check constantly
that you are on course. There are 3 simple questions that many businesses don’t ask themselves – but should 1. Do you really know what your business is good at? 2. Do you have a good idea of where you want to be in 3 years? 3. Do you know if you are doing well enough to get there? One of the reasons why many business owners fail to plan properly is that they are too close to their business, you are emotionally involved and your time is taken up with solving the day to day problems. As a result you may not have time to step back from the business and take a long look at it, that’s where an impartial adviser can help you most. We’ve all said it: “I have more important things to do than plan”. But people who say that end up working longer hours for the same profit. They chase sales in the belief that turnover is the key to success. You know if you are in this trap if your
turnover rises and your profits are static or falling. Remember, turnover is vanity, profit is sanity. Aim to improve profitability by at least the same level as turnover. You will only be able to do this by planning ahead, analysing your performance and keeping your finger on the pulse of the business.
5 key tips to remember If you don’t know where your business is going, any road will do – so set yourself some goals Be proactive in your planning, not reactive – plan longer term not just day to day (business is a marathon not a sprint). Implementation is key, a plan in isolation is worthless (put it into action and not in a drawer!) Monitor performance and effectiveness – in terms of financial/sales/ people/ your happiness factor Adjust your plan as necessary – it’s not set in stone, if markets change then the plan has to change.
Business Planning is vital A good business owner wants to control the business rather than be controlled by it. If your focus is shortterm then you are being controlled by your business. By taking a longer view and having a direction, you have a better chance of controlling your own destiny. Remember – to fail to plan, is to plan to fail. Could you benefit from counselling or hypnotherapy? Each and every one of us, from time to time will find ourselves in a situation where we do not feel happy or find life difficult to cope with. Counselling/psychotherapy is often described as a ‘talking therapy’, giving people time to explore their problems in a safe and supportive environment where they will not be judged and all information remains completely confidential. Clients are given as much time as is needed to work through and resolve their problems at their own pace. I passionately believe that we should all have the chance to live our lives to the full. In both my Horsham and Southwater clinics I offer clients a safe and supportive setting. I work on a one to one basis and individually tailor each session.
I believe we should all ‘have the chance to live our lives to the full ’
Client’s are encouraged to develop healthy coping strategies, gain insight into their feelings and behaviours and reach their full potential, taking back control of their lives. For hypnotherapy the use of positive suggestions while in a very relaxed state can help to change thoughts and behaviours around issues that are troubling you. I work with children and adults of all ages; I hold a ‘safe guarding children’ certificate and am CRB checked. I am bound by the hypnotherapy and counselling societies code of ethics as a safe guard for all my clients. So whether it’s hypnotherapy or counselling that you are thinking about, call for an informal chat and for a full list of therapies offered. Karen Jones hypnotherapyforallages.co.uk

Kitchen a little tired? He can refurbish it Sainsbury’s gets pupils A kitchen fitter who has been in the business for decades is now working alone, revamping kitchens that are stuck in a rut
Steve Hanna’s mission is to rebuild your kitchen to your exact specifications and rescue it from the era in which it was first built. The kitchen fitter has more than 30 years’ experience in the trade and has worked for a major kitchen installation company for the last decade. Now, he is working for himself and is using his skills to help revamp kitchens across Sussex, no matter how big or small. Steve said: “I’ve been doing this a long time, and it’s really great that I can now use my experience to install
people’s ideal kitchen and do it with a personal, friendly service. “I work mostly alone, unless I need to bring in specialists for things like marble or tailor-made cupboards. That means I can offer flexibility and customers have a kitchen fitter they can trust working in their home.” Whether it is for an entire kitchen restoration from start to finish, leaving no surface unturned, or simply updating the cupboards, taps or tiles separately, Steve is your man. He can turn his hand to any kitchen and build it to your exact requirements.
Steve added: “There is nothing I can’t do when it comes to kitchens. I have a real love for the work I do. I love meeting new customers and helping them create their dream space. “I work mostly on older kitchens, that are just in need of modernising. The layout may be fine but the doors, worktops, fittings and wall tiling need bringing up to date” Because Steve works for himself, there is no hard sell. “In some of the larger kitchen installation companies, it’s all about how much they can sell to the customer. But in my experience customers know what they want from their kitchen. It’s my job to listen to them, not the other way around.” Steve’s knowledge of everything kitchen-related means you will get an expert (and fantastic) finish at a price you will be pleasantly surprised with. Another reason you are sure to be happy with the result is that Steve is passionate about the work he does. He told The Resident: “It’s so satisfying to see the finished kitchen. I have happy customers who end up with a room that reflects their own tastes and lifestyles and will last for years to come.”
involved in Paralympics
Pupils at a local school have been given the opportunity to get involved in Paralympic sport activities as part of Sainbury’s 1 Million Kids Challenge. Littlehaven Infant School in Horsham applied to Sainbury’s to receive equipment for the games, which included kit for three Paralympic sports, Goalball, Sitting Volleyball and Visually-Impaired Football. The scheme was designed to give young people of all abilities the chance to experience Paralympic sports in the run-up to this year’s
London 2012 Paralympic Games. Sainsbury’s Horsham store manager, Ian Maxey, said: “My team really enjoyed visiting the school and helping pupils take part in this Paralympic sport. Sainsbury’s is proud to be sponsors of the 2012 Paralympic Games and it’s fantastic to know that 10 schools signed up to the challenge in Horsham. “We’d like to wish good luck to all our local schools taking part and hope they have fun as well as help raise awareness of the Paralympic Games.”

Review - Stuart James Band
At the very least it was 18 months in the making so the launch night of the Stuart James Band EP ‘Changing Lanes’ had to be something special. The chosen venue was Weltons Brewery in Horsham where Ray Welton had agreed to host the launch within the confines of his industrial unit, an excellent choice for the industrial strength Rock and Blues music that was to come. Ray had also brewed four commemorative beers named after the tracks on the EP which, when I
arrived were being ordered faster than the bar tenders could serve! As the snow fell support band South of 55th kicked off proceedings with some superbly executed Chicago blues standards, lead by Neil Thompson on vocals and harmonica. Following a half hour break in which the majority of the crowd downed the track-named beers, Stuart James and crew took to the stage in their three piece format comprising Stuart on lead vocals and guitar, Junior James on Bass and new addition Spencer Blackledge taking control of percussion duties. Through the dimmed lights we heard the first four muted bars of the title track ‘Changing Lanes’ and it was

clear the boys meant business – then bang! The lights were up and we were off and running! With both brothers sporting scarves and shades they battered through ‘Lanes’ with its raunchy rhythm and angry vocal lines to a dramatic close featuring all three musicians in a note-perfect finish. This was immediately followed by a track from the 2007 album ‘Pornokitsch and Morals’. Prior to its excellent mid section, we saw Stuart scream to the crowd “HOW YOU DOING WELTONS?!” to rapturous cheers and shouting. After a quick tune-up saw a rousing rendition of ‘Living on my own again’ which for the last year has been the classic SJB opener. We were then treated to a seven minute version of the Rory Gallagheresque ‘Mean Disposition’ with some frightening guitar work from Stuart through a crescendo solo to quiet section showing light and shade only to be rivalled by the biggest names on the rock and blues circuits. Hendrix’s ‘Wind Cries Mary’ went down a storm, followed by a beer named track ‘Who’s to Blame?’. To close the first set the band ripped into a Joe Bonamassa cover ‘So it’s Like That’ to well deserved applause

and whistles. To kick off the second electric set the band launched into ‘Jagerblind’ a funky, washy/rock number. By the time Stuart announced to the crowd that it was looney time following the intro riff to ‘Riot House’, Junior and Spence had crashed into the main body of the song with such controlled power it was obvious to the crowd that before them was one very well rehearsed and tight band indeed! Add to this set a steady but heavy version of ‘Take me to the River’ and track seven from the EP the imaginative and hard ‘Fool for those Faces’ with its fearsome and distorted ending, it was obvious the boys were drawing the two hours of continuous music to a grand finale. ‘Does anyone like Rory Gallagher?’ was the cue for final song “Take what I Want” with the band and the crowd alike going wild, this number brought the set and the event to a close. The Brewery’s crowd bayed for more and the band obliged with an early Police number ‘Next to You’ which sent the drinkers home with the words “What can I do?” no doubt ringing in their ears. Let’s see where they go next. I for one, will be there!

A taste of success for village shop
Danny Pike (BBC Sussex), Nick Hempleman, Nina Hempleman and Cllr Deborah Urquhart
On January 26, the sixth annual Sussex Food and Drink awards took place at the American Express Community Stadium in Brighton. Eight businesses were awarded top prizes, one of which was Steyningbased The Sussex Produce Company. A record-breaking 11,000 people voted and over 350 businesses and individuals were nominated. An expert judging panel visited the top three in each category and selected the winners. The Sussex Produce Company won the award for Best Sussex Food Shop, an award it won in 2008 and was a inalist for two years running. Owner Nick Hempleman said: “To win this year as well was absolutely fantastic. We didn’t think we would win it, we thought we’d just be inalists again.” Nick moved his team to a larger premises last year which enabled the company to have a café, a deli counter and serve Harveys beer. Soups and pasta sauces are made in the store and sold as well as served in the café. The company sources the best local fruit and veg from small-scale Sussex farmers, over 100 are local out of the 114 it uses. Nick said: “Especially when times are tight people want to support the local economy, local milk producers and farmers.” Chairman of the judges, Clive Beddall OBE, noted that Sussex is now
seen as one of Britain’s true centres of excellence for food and drink by national buys. Clive said: “Research shows that, despite the economic downturn, demand for locally-sourced food has actually accelerated during the past 12 months and more than half the country’s shoppers now say they are prepared to pay extra for local food.” And Steyning, a small quaint village, is just the place to go. It still has a butchers, bakers, ishmongers and tea shops.
Supermarkets are so ‘large now that going shopping can be quite an unpleasant experience
’
People can get everything they want in one high street instead of going to a supermarket, something Nick feels the public is bored with. He said: “Supermarkets are so large now that going shopping can be quite an unpleasant experience and people are sceptical about whether British meat is actually from Britain. “Going to a supermarket is totally an anonymous affair, unlike coming
Nick Hempleman
into our shop.” The Sussex Produce Company prides itself on friendly and knowledgeable staff, one of the reasons the judges gave it the award. Nick was delighted that his staff were recognised as they work so hard. Nick thinks that they add to the community atmosphere in the shop and Steyning high street. It seems like Steyning is the place to go for friendly service and fresh fruit and veg.

Go potty for potatoes Old Barn Nurseries, at Dial Post near Horsham, is holding its annual Grow Your Own Potato weekend this month. The free event will take place on February 18 and 19, with the opportunity to learn how to grow your own spuds. Mig Ammolla, manager at Old Barn Nurseries, said: “We’ve hosted potato weekends in the past and each time they get bigger and better. Everyone is welcome, whether they are an experienced vegetable grower or a novice.”
The garden centre will be offering information about selecting, planting, caring for and harvesting potatoes, as well as teaching you all there is to know about the nation’s favourite vegetable and the beneits of growing it. Mig added: “It’s very rewarding growing your own potatoes and once you have tasted them, you will understand how amazing it is. They are packed with vitamin C which is very good for you. Home-grown fruit and veg always taste better than shopbought.
“Don’t be put off if you don’t have a veg patch or allotment. Potatoes can be easily grown with minimal care in containers in a small garden.” Old Barn Nurseries is also running its regular potato modelling competition. They are encouraging children to get creative and make weird and wonderful creatures and people from potatoes. The closing date for entries is midday on Sunday, February 19. And when you’ve done all that, you can go along to their restaurant to try a variety of potato-based dishes too.

The flavour of the Spice Merchant Charlotte Schroeter Junior Reporter
Abul Kashem has been working with Spice Merchant for eight years and is a valued member of its team. His career has been solely with the company and he has worked his way up within the business, something that Spice Merchant strongly believes in. He began as a kitchen porter and is now the head chef in the Horsham branch. He has worked as the second chef in Lewes and also worked in the Walton-on-Thames restaurant. There is a strong family link and closeness with all the staff. The business is built on family tradition, something that Abul also relates to. He hails from a Bangladeshi
background which initiated his interest in cooking. In Bangladesh, around 98% of people have worked in a restaurant so it was a natural career choice for Abul. The food served at Spice Merchant is based on regions in India. Goa, Nepal and Rajasthan are its main influence but Bangladeshi cuisine fits the bill too. Beef and rice are staple ingredients in Bangladeshi meals and the food varies from very sweet and mild to extremely spicy. In Goa, rice is also a primary part of the food prepared combined with local spices, and the essential meat is fish, which completes a meal. Goan food has a Portuguese flare to it. The area is tropical and the spices and flavours are intense. Nepalese food is healthy and nourishing. Rice is central to its cuisine

too as is Dal (lentils) and Tarkari (curried vegetables). Ginger, pepper, cumin, chilies and mustard oil are just some of the flavours you will find in Nepalese food. Rajasthani cooking boasts mouthwatering aromas and is based on pulses, dry fruits, spices and yoghurt. The colourful dishes are unique and a principle ingredient is ghee – a clarified butter. The food is predominantly vegetarian which provides a nice mix for the restaurant’s menu, there’s something for everyone. What is lovely about the menu is that it is carefully thought out by the executive chef in the Sevenoaks branch and taught to the head chefs. Abul takes what he learns and adds his own mark to it.
The taste of each ‘dish is individual ’
The food isn’t just thrown together with little thought but instead carefully crafted. The taste of each dish is individual, it’s not just one sauce that is used all the time and altered slightly. A dish well known to a British
SM
Spice Merchant head chef Abul Kashem
pallet is Tikka Massala, which is a popular choice on the menu. However if you put your trust in Abul, you can discover other dishes such as the popular Chettinand (chicken or lamb infused with 18 spices in a hot sauce of ginger, garlic and coconut) and Deshi Karahi (an authentic hot and spicy curry for curry lovers). Goan Lamb Shank is the best seller on the menu. Its lamb shank with a difference, full of flavour and cooked with red wine, tomatoes and coriander. This dish is the chef’s personal
favourite so it’s well worth a taste. The speciality dishes are simple but full of flavour. They are bursting with fresh ingredients and provide a mixture of authentic but contemporary cooking. Abul gets inspiration from famous Indian chefs and likes to make his dishes visually appealing as well as having that amazing taste. Along with the great food, there is a lovely ambience in the restaurant and fantastic service. These three elements provide an amazing experience.

This trained chef can be found with a vast array of fabulous cakes, pastries and quiches every Saturday at the Carfax Market. Although this is a quick and easy dish, he may even offer to come to your home and cook it for you (at a small cost)!
What you need
What to do
1 small sea bass scaled and filleted
1. Mould the potato into two cylinder shapes about 3” across. Toss these into the flour, then the egg and finally the breadcrumbs. Bake for about 20 mins or until golden brown on 190°c or gas mark 5-6 2. Warm the olive oil in a deep frying pan with the seeds of the vanilla pod (do not let it get too hot) 3. Poach the fish in the oil for 3-4 mins and at the same time cook the green beans in boiling water for the same time 4. Lightly grill the tomato wedges until they start to colour 5. Put a heaped tablespoon of chutney in the middle of the plate, pat it flat. Place the potato on top of the chutney, then the green beans and the drained fish. Finish with the wedges of tomato around the plate.

Indulge in a winter warmer at Haldi Steve Goodwin
Review
Haldi, Lintot Square, Southwater
Did anyone notice it’s been a bit on the chilly side this week? When The Resident was invited to escape the cold snap by visiting Southwater’s long-standing Indian restaurant, Haldi, the offer was warmly welcomed. Located just three miles from Horsham, in Southwater’s village centre, Haldi was opened 12 years ago by owner Jay Choudhury and is the village’s only restaurant. Because of the close location to Horsham (with its ever-increasing abundance of eateries) Haldi has always had to compete, and does so by providing a slight alternative to the classic Indian restaurant formula we
all know and love. They specialise in (and are experts with) fish and duck, making any of their dishes available with the latter. “We offer something different,” says Jay. “There is no room for an ‘okay’ restaurant.” Dishes also take their influence from all regions of India, rather than a specific area’s cuisine. Haldi’s interior is smart, stylish, clean and contemporary. The traditional poppadoms were first onto the table, complete with the four staple accompaniments. Following hot on their trails were our starters, Chicken Nazakat and Tandoori Monkfish. Both were grilled and served with a delicious tangy and spicy sauce, which provided a nice level of heat. The Chicken Nazakat was cooked with a garlic sauce and was pleasant,

but we were really impressed with the monkfish. It was perfectly soft and moist, with flavours of coriander running through it, complemented nicely with a squeeze of lime. As well as proving popular with a number of regulars, Haldi also provides a very popular takeaway service. The portions are large, reasonably priced, and there is a free car park right outside – so it’s easy to see why. They also regularly have special offers, such as 10 per cent discount, and a free bottle of wine on orders over £50. Our main course consisted of two dishes accompanied by pilau rice and a garlic naan. Haldi’s version of the Chicken Balti was a delight – tender chicken in a deep, rich and almost sticky thick sauce. It wasn’t spicy, but what it lacked in heat it made up for with depth of flavour. The naan did a good job of mopping up the sauce. We were also presented with one of the house specials, Chicken Razala. This dish has been specially designed for the local charity campaign Horsham 100 and is already popular with diners. Pieces of chicken are marinated in garlic and coriander, skewered and grilled, and served with yoghurt, onion, green pepper and fresh green

chillies. The sauce was light and flavoursome with a medium heat, with the green chillies providing a nice kick, if you like that sort thing, which I most definitely do.
is no room for ‘anThere ‘okay’ restaurant ’
On the subject of hot curries, Jay told us of another popular dish, the Naga, another Haldi creation. Not for the faint-hearted, this has a similar level of heat to a vindaloo, but packing in more flavour. “You have to be in the right mood, it will make you sweat!” warns Jay. After our plates had been wiped clean (you can’t waste a good sauce) we were left reflecting on an extremely enjoyable meal. Haldi maintain the classic Indian restaurant traditions and dishes and deliver them immaculately, but also bring variety to the table with their
focus on fish, duck and speciality dishes. The prices are very reasonable, and with promotions such as the Sunday Family Buffet and Monday Banquet Night, they continue to thrive in a competitive marketplace. I’m sure the Southwater locals are already familiar with Haldi, as it’s had a constant presence in the village for over a decade. But if, like me, you’re from Horsham, or even further afield, it’s definitely worth a visit. To download current menus and see the latest special offers visit www.haldirestaurant.co.uk

With the 12-month milestone approaching, Just Brownie’s Sarah Westall has never been busier. And it’s all thanks to the public’s hunger for home baking and a few special ingredients It’s been almost one year since Sarah Westall set up Just Brownies, and it’s been as packed with achievements as her brownies are with flavour. Today, the company has won numerous corporate contracts and supplies seven outlets with the delectable treats in the area. Just Brownies has launched a brand new website, on which customers can order brownies for postal delivery, whether it’s for a gift or just to treat themselves. And the little brown squares of heaven can now be found at Horsham Market every Saturday – much to the delight of the company’s legion of fans. The brownies have become more interesting too. On the menu are flavours including
peanut butter, rocky road, honeycomb, blackforest gateau and coffee. There’s also a curry option and Sarah will even take requests. The cherry on her rather delicious cakes is that Sarah recently won the Best Dressed Market Stall at the Dressed for Success Awards 2011. Speaking about the success of the business, Sarah said: “It’s fantastic! When you consider the current economy and the fact that shops are closing everywhere, I’m really proud to say Just Brownies just keeps on baking. “At the market, I keep selling out. I think the success is a sign that there is still an appetite for fresh, well-prepared and high-quality food. And people will always love home-baked goods.”

Introducing The Amberley Collection
Agency’s new look promises ‘More’
The highlights of the development include the following: • Close proximity to Storrington village (approximately one mile away) • Unique position opposite a green, in a quiet tree lined location • Two of the six homes are bungalows, rare for a new development • West facing gardens • Well placed for schools, transport links and community run activities
The Amberley Collection from Martin Grant Homes is a stunning new development nestled at the bottom of the South Downs National Park. The six homes are now nearing completion and form the second of only two new developments built in the centre of Storrington in the last two years, both handled by Guy Leonard and Company. Martin Grant Homes are renowned for their impeccable style, finish and careful choice of materials, which demonstrate their innovation in design and environmental sensitivity. The six individually designed homes reflect this reputation and will be beautifully finished, with exclusive
features including stylish contemporary kitchens with Italian stone work tops, ‘Villeroy and Boch’ finished bathroom suites, low energy light fittings and solar panels on the five bedroom property. Each property has its own private parking or garaging, as well as private gardens with the guaranteed serenity of being located on a quiet street. The properties have been specifically designed to blend with the existing plots around the site, and as a result contribute only further to the charming atmosphere of their prime location on the outskirts of the bustling village of Storrington with plenty of local amenities.
These features demonstrate that whether you are raising a family, commuting into London or retiring to the quiet of the countryside, the Amberley Collection provides something for everyone. The homes are approaching completion and a Progress Party is being held at 12pm on Saturday, February 18. Several of the properties have been reserved off plan and this Open Day is an opportunity for the more cautious buyer to see the homes now they have been built and to establish room sizes and specification. Many samples of the finishes will be available for potential buyers to view, showing how the homes will be completed to the usual excellent Martin Grant Homes standard. For further information regarding the Progress Party, please contact Guy Leonard and Company on 01903 742354 and they will be delighted to help.
WAKE UP TO THIS VIEW…
A Horsham estate agent is starting 2012 with a brand new look and a new promise to customers. Courtney Green, which has operated successfully in the area since 1988, unveiled a fresh new look at their Carfax headquarters this week. Together with a new approach to its visual style, the agency has drawn up a charter of promises backed by its own Latin motto ‘Nos Tribu Magis’, meaning ‘we give more’.
“We have been in business in the area for well over 23 years and felt the time was right for a refresh,” explained Courtney Green MD Nick Courtney. “But rather than just stopping at our logo and branding, we decided to update our whole culture and approach. “Going that extra mile has always been an important part of our business but we wanted to make the fact the ‘we give more’ official. Now it’s an actual part of our brand, complete with Latin motto!” During 2012 Courtney Green will be putting in place a number of initiatives designed to prove that they do in fact give more than other agencies. The new Courtney Green branding is designed to reflect the company’s long and successful history in the area but with a modern twist.
In the heart of old Pulborough village, Reside Developments is busy creating a collection of just nine elegant and spacious new homes in The Walled Courtyard, whilst also sensitively converting the former Arundale School (circa 1899) into two substantial properties in The Old School House, which will retain many of the original features and period detail. This small beautifully designed development will offer: • Stunning views (actual view shown here) • Superior specifications • Energy efficient and cost saving design features • Private parking/garages • Walking distance of local shops and village Primary School.

Motors Fiat go large with the new 500L the-resident.co.uk
Olli Nott Motors Editor
Fiat presents the first official images of the 500L, the new model which will have its world preview at the International Geneva Motor Show on March 6. 500L - the L stands for ‘Large’ - is the new addition to the 500 range, which, following the Abarth and Cabrio versions, furthers the brand’s strategy, with the aim of extending its offer by introducing models in a position to satisfy different types of customers. With the ‘L’, the 500 expands and grows together with customers, to accommodate new experiences and needs once more. With MPV passenger space combined with the feel of a small SUV on the road and the restrained dimensions and efficiency of a B segment car, the new Fiat model defies the conventional distinctions between the various segments, combining the typical characteristics of different categories in order to create a distinctive alternative to the traditional B and C segments. With the 500L, the Fiat brand

demonstrates its creative spirit once more: a marriage of functionality and emotion, it features a 5-seater singlevolume structure which is 414 cm long, 178 cm wide and 166 cm high. It is a further development of the concept of ‘cab forward’ introduced by Fiat with the 600 Multipla, a precursor to the concept of the compact people carrier. Produced at the Fiat factory in Kragujevac, Serbia, 500L is a ‘first car’ for those who won’t settle for anything less than Italian style, the versatility that comes from a functional design and engine technology that sets the bar in terms of efficiency. The Fiat 500L will be introduced to Europe in the last quarter of 2012, with an engine range which will initially comprise two petrol engines (TwinAir and 1.4-litre) and a turbodiesel engine (1.3 MultiJet II) and the most advanced, state-of-the-art technology from Fiat Group Automobiles. I can’t wait for this car to appear on the streets of Horsham, it’s a great contender for Citroën’s C3 Picasso, as it now has the compact MPV market all to itself, with the departure of half of Renault’s UK range. I’m also wondering if there’ll be an Abarth offering too!

Hornets fans asked to be patient over ground plans My second thoughts
www.hornetsreview.co.uk Football
Horsham chairman Kevin Borrett says plans to secure a site for a new ground are at an advanced stage, but he shares fans’ frustrations that details cannot be fully disclosed yet. The Hornets plan to inally replace their former Queen Street home after a year of ground-sharing at Worthing and almost three years so far at Gorings Mead, home of Horsham YMCA. In a statement to supporters, Borrett said: “I am very conscious that the club last issued a formal statement regarding progress on its new ground plans last autumn.
Formal contracts are ‘close to being signed ’
“For those within the club, involved on a daily basis in advancing the necessary arrangements, progress can feel painstakingly slow. “For those not directly involved, but with the same passionate interest in getting things sorted, the silence can be deafening and raise feelings of frustration, doubts and even worries about what exactly is going on. “Add to this our irst-team position at the bottom of the Ryman Premier League and even the most ardent supporter can feel disillusioned.

“I can assure you that every individual on the board, and each member of the club committee, do understand how frustrated every supporter of the club feels. “The extraordinarily complex nature of the legal documentation, and the sheer weight of detailed analysis required, is monumental and utterly time-consuming. “This approach is needed without taking shortcuts, however attractive they may seem, if we are to realise our intentions. “All that – together with our desire not to give opponents of our plans an early head-start and the conidentiality agreements in place – prevent suficient detail from being publicly

disclosed that gives the level of reassurance we would like to. “However, since the last statement we have progressed a long way down the road and formal contracts are close to being signed. I cannot say exactly how close, as that is determined by the speed of response by others. “I can tell you there is a very strong will and desire from everyone involved to conclude the contracts – from the oficers of Horsham District Council to the landowners of the site, our prospective development partners and the Holbrook Club. “Once contracts are agreed, and the support of the club’s trustees (who hold an inluential shareholding) is secured, a public consultation by
way of a display of our plans will be required. “Following that, the planning process itself will be detailed and lengthy. But that is another very necessary part of the process that cannot be hurried – one where the club was rightly criticised by supporters last time around for inadequate preparation. “This season has thus far brought a fair measure of disappointment on the pitch and little real news off it, yet I continue to be amazed by the level of continued backing the club enjoys from its loyal supporters. “That loyalty and support is not taken for granted and, very soon, we hope to make good on the trust you have bestowed in us.”
County success for Atlantis swimmers Youth Swimming
Atlantis swimmers won ive medals, including three golds, in the County Championships at the K2, Crawley. Kate Windle, 11, Beth Britton, 12, and Ella Windle, 13, all won their age groups to pick up gold medals in the 800m. After a whole season out of competition last year due to injury, Yasmin Hooker, 13, continued her return to the top by picking up a bronze medal. A delighted Edward Hundleby, 12, earned a bronze medal in the very tough 1,500m, while George Charter, 13, also achieved a personal best time. Buoyant head coach Bill Penny said: “I am really pleased we have started our county campaign so strongly. “The whole team – swimmers and coaches alike – have been working really hard ahead of this year’s championships and I am looking forward to the rest of the competition.”

As Jimmy Greaves would say: “It’s a funny old game!” When we lost four consecutive matches in December without scoring a goal, it started to look as though we were heading towards the bottom half of the Championship. We are now into February and remain unbeaten in 2012. We have beaten Newcastle and face Liverpool in the ifth round of the FA Cup at Anield next weekend. What’s more, we are within two points of a play-off spot, which we could even ind ourselves sitting in tomorrow (Saturday) evening. Played in freezing weather, Saturday’s game against Leicester took a long time to warm up. In fact, it was well into the second half before it really sparked into life. Both teams had their chances, Albion having a goal disallowed because of an offside decision and Leicester shooting just wide with one of their attempts. It was again the ref that inluenced the game and, for once, his decisions went our way. Leicester lost Jermaine Beckford to a red card before we lost Matt Sparrow. At this point, I think Leicester fancied their chances and tried a more attacking style, but all it did was to make room at the back that Albion were happy to exploit. When the inally-it Vicente found Will Buckley with an exquisite pass on the stroke of full time, there was no way our goal machine was going to miss. There was still time for the ref to send off Leicester’s Neil Danns for a second bookable offence when he brought down Vicente just outside the box. Had the ref allowed play to continue for another second or two, Ashley Barnes’ goal would have stood and Albion would have inished 2-0 winners. Tomorrow we face Leeds at Elland Road following the sacking of their manager, Simon Grayson. When a new man takes charge of a team, it always seems their performances improve, at least in the short term. I just hope that it’s very short term! Elland Road is a ground I have yet to visit. We haven’t won there since 1985, but maybe my presence will inspire Albion to get that illusive victory. Only a few weeks ago I said I wasn’t sure I wanted Albion to push for promotion this year. But having beaten Newcastle and with a trip to Liverpool to look forward to, as well as being unbeaten in eight games, I’m starting to have second thoughts.

Breaking with tradition at the Barns Green Half Marathon Matthew James Sport Editor
matthew@the-resident.co.uk
In a break with tradition, the Barns Green Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, September 30 this year – a month earlier than usual. Organisers have made the change for the 30th race in order to avoid a clash with the Great South Run and to improve the chances of good weather. Race director Vernon Jennings said: “I am very excited about the change of date and would like to thank everyone who has been so accommodating, especially Christ’s Hospital School. “The section through the school is a lovely part of the race route and it has always seemed a shame to me that the pupils aren’t there to see it and cheer on the runners. “By moving the race forward a month, it will hopefully also mean we can accommodate more runners by having more car parking space available. In recent years in particular, persistent rain has resulted in waterlogged fields and problems with cars getting stuck in the mud. “Another new initiative for 2012 will be the introduction of junior and fun-run races for younger runners and more details on these will be announced very soon.” John Franklin, head of Christ’s Hospital School, said: “We are delighted that the pupils and staff at the school will get the chance to see such a wonderful local event. “We intend to have our famous marching band, made up of over 100 pupils, playing in the quadrangle beside the runners as they pass through. This will be a great spectacle and will hopefully give all those running in the

race an extra lift. “Several of the staff will be competing in the race, as well as some of the older pupils. They are sure to get plenty of encouragement as they run through the beautiful main avenue.” A mixture of serious runners and fundraisers in ever-so-slightly silly costumes made the latest race an event to remember last autumn. Almost 1,500 entrants of various abilities ran around the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater, through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. More than £10,000 was raised through the 2011 race. All of this money has been distributed to

charities, groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who helped stage the race. The event was started in 1982 by Barns Green Football Club, to raise money for Muntham School when the school allowed the club to use floodlit facilities for training. It has been held every year since, except 1987 when part of the course was blocked by fallen trees after the great storm. A small army of helpers from in and around Barns Green, many from local sports clubs and youth organisations, help ensure the event runs smoothly.
