Hooded gang with shotgun and machete attack couple It’s the sort of incident that, thankfully, seldom happens in Horsham. A couple, in their late 50s/early 60s suffered a horrible ordeal at their home in Longfield Road on Wednesday (8th December) evening. A gang of what is thought to have been five or six men burst into their home, threatening the couple with a machete and a shotgun. Having forced their way in, they struck the man in the face, threatening the couple as they demanded money. The ordeal lasted just a few minutes before the gang - all wearing hooded tops - made their getaway having stolen a few hundred pounds. Both victims were very shocked by their ordeal and were taken to the East Surrey Hospital for treatment. The man required stitches to a cut to his

An Oceanic Whitetip, described by Jacques Cousteau as "the most dangerous of all sharks" is believed to be behind the fatal attack As many couples do, Ellie Barnes and Gary Light from Southwater headed out to Egypt to catch some winter sun. While the rest of us shovelled snow from our driveways, they would be relaxing on the beach or taking in the stunning marine life when snorkelling in the Red Sea. But it will be a holiday that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Both witnessed a terrifying fatal attack on a 70-year-old German tourist by what is thought to be an Oceanic Whitetip Shark on the final day of their holiday. Ellie was in the water snorkelling just yards away when the attack happened at the Sharm elSheikh resort. Gary, who swam out to even greater depths in the previous days before he had even been made aware of other serious shark attacks in the area, could only watch and shout from the beach as the attack unfolded. They had arrived for their holiday on Sunday, 28th November, before any of the shark attacks. After three Russian and one Ukrainian tourist were seriously injured by sharks, the beaches were briefly closed by the authorities. But Ellie and Gary knew nothing of these attacks until another British couple told them about the incidents on Wednesday evening. Before long, however, they

were pleased to hear that an official Government notice was sent to the couple’s hotel, declaring that the sharks responsible had been caught and the beaches were now open. Ellie said: “The man on the beach loudspeaker system was even joking that the only shark still around was one of the staff from the water sports centre!”

On Sunday, the day of the fatal attack, everyone was back in the water - swimming, snorkelling, and even riding the banana boats. But soon, with the authorities declaring the beaches safe, Sharm elSheikh was to experience its own ‘Jaws’ moment. Ellie said: “I spent the last of our holiday money on a disposable camera to take out in the water, and forced myself

Police are appealing for information about a burglary in which a rare family heirloom was stolen. A tiger's hide, which included the head and teeth, was stolen during a break-in at a house in Ashurst, near Steyning. The burglary was reported to police on 1st December, but it is thought that it may

have happened anytime in the few days before. A blue antique vase was also taken from the property. Detective Constable Andy Robinson, of the North Downs burglary team, said: “The stolen tiger's hide is over 100-years-old and a family heirloom. “They are very rare nowadays and would

Baa-baric ‘keep all dogs on leads when they are near livestock and wild animals’

two hebridean sheep have died after an attack by dogs at chesworth Farm. The sheep had only been there for three weeks, having been introduced after a short time grazing on Mill Meadow at Warnham Nature Reserve. Saturday’s attack left one of the eight sheep dead, and another with a broken leg. Sadly, the second animal had to be put down by a vet. Steve Delahunt, Head Countryside Warden, said: “We are appealing to all dog walkers and pet owners to remember the Countryside Code – in particular, keep all dogs on leads when they are near livestock and wild animals. “Although such incidents are rare, we are now considering stricter controls at all of our countryside sites.” Sussex Police are now dealing with the matter. The sheep are ideal conservation grazers as they love to eat long, tough grasses, bramble and thistles,

leaving grass closely cropped and allowing finer native grasses and wildflowers to flourish. They were introduced to Warnham in a bid to create a more sensitive autumn grass cut than the previous mowing regime, which may help to protect the meadow’s butterflies, and will also save money on mowing contractors. After Warnham, the sheep were moved onto nearby Chesworth Farm to manage the grassland there. The fields at Chesworth Farm have some of the most wildlife-rich grassland in Horsham. The wildlife-rich grassland needs to managed, however, to keep the habitat open and the grasses short and this is achieved through a combination of haycutting and grazing with cows and now, of course, the Hebridean sheep.

57-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving after a fatal accident crash at Rudgwick on Monday. He has been bailed until 29th January, 2011. Shortly after 12pm a lorry and a car travelling east were in collision with an oncoming vehicle. A 79-year-old man, Lloyd Russell from Rudgwick, who was driving the car travelling east, received fatal injuries in the collision. His 75-year-old female passenger, who was cut out by firefighters, suffered serious injuries. Witnesses can contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999.

Mistakes made with Acorn Plus Just two weeks ago, the council was forced to defend its Acorn Plus recycling scheme, after figures revealed it was the main reason behind a huge budget overspend. Horsham District Council’s mid-term report showed that they were £1.6million off the forecast figure - with roughly half that being an overspend and the other half caused by a lack of revenue, from sources such as car parking. Of the hefty overspend, £790,000 was due to the Acorn Plus scheme. It led the council chiefs to call a press briefing, where they hailed the success of the scheme, talked up its recycling figures and spoke of its ‘value’. Now, a special report compiled by an outside company has pretty much demonstrated that much of this overspend was unavoidable. Horsham won’t be walking away with any Council of the Year Awards, but the report’s authors - Compass Network Associates - say that only £164,000 (28%) of that figure could have been avoided. “What do you mean ‘only 28%’?” you may justifiably say. The money could have gone a long way, after all. But the report points out that the money could only have been saved if the redundancy programme had happened more quickly, and from The Resident’s own discussions with the council, it is ap-

At the instigation of the Council’s Leader, Councillor Robert Nye, Compass Network Associates (a company which specialises in the design of operational services and which advised on the Acorn Plus project at an early stage) was engaged to provide expert external analysis of the overspend, to allow the council to understand the causes and to ensure that lessons are learned Last night (December 9th), the Cabinet considered a report by the Council’s Chief Executive, Tom Crowley, drawing on the conclusions of the Compass Network Associates’ review. His report recommends actions to ensure the projected expenditure is contained or reduced; to address organisational weaknesses and to initiate an investigation into the performance of relevant staff. The author of the Compass Network Associates’ report, Tom Paul (the company’s

aging Director) has concluded that despite the additional costs the decision to introduce the new service still makes sound economic sense. His report identifies that 72% of the £580,000 overspend to the end of October was unavoidable (including £163,000 that was due to unforeseen circumstances including the extra volumes of recyclable material that have been collected and the increased cost of fuel). Cllr Robert Nye, Leader of Horsham District Council, said: “The consultant has produced a detailed and thorough analysis that shows the new service still represents very good value for money and that the bulk of the overspend was necessary. “In addition, most of the overspend was ‘one off’, and will not therefore impact on the cost of the service in future and needs to be viewed against our annual turnover of £30 million. “However, it is clear that performance could have been better. “I am determined that lessons will be learned and I am working with the Chief Executive to ensure the mistakes that led to the overspend are not repeated.” Tom Crowley, Chief Executive of Horsham District Council, said: “Although we have delivered an excellent new service for residents, we should have done better in our financial planning and project management. “I very much regret the mistakes that were made and I am doing all I can to ensure the organisation learns from this experience.” Following consideration by Horsham District Council’s Cabinet on December 9th, the matter will be referred to the full Council on December 15th.

You could make an argument that these people are just doing their job. But it would have been easy for these people to have curled up under the duvet and claimed they were snowed in! Frank Delia, above left, can often be seen performing a number of duties as a park ranger for Horsham District Council. But last Thursday (December 2nd), during the worst of the snow, he was out early, having made his way in from Littlehampton to clear footpaths. It wasn’t a fun couple of days for commuters, facing cancellations and huge delays. But then it wasn’t much fun for the railway worker whose job it was to free the points on the practically invisible tracks, so thousands could get to

work! Messages of thanks are being given to everyone involved in the recent clear up of snow and the support offered to vulnerable residents in the Horsham district. Horsham District Council carried out a number of tasks and was also amongst a number of agencies that diverted normal duties to assist the clearing snow in the district over the week. Twenty-five staff that made it into work volunteered to clear snow in Horsham and elsewhere in the district. And as temperatures plummeted, over 1,700 vulnerable, elderly and sick residents on the Council’s Community Link alarm service were called by council staff to see if they needed help. Emergency prescriptions

were also collected for a number of residents, helping kidney dialysis patients and others. The council also assisted in delivering loose grit to many parishes throughout the district, along with other support to the parishes and also cleared access routes to healthcare facilities and shops across the area. And it wasn’t just the council. A local resident was quickly in touch to offer to clear roads with a JCB telehandler in the Shipley and Ashington areas.

Not tired of attire It’s been around for 450 years, but surely - given half a chance the students at Christ’s Hospital would grab the chance to bring the school uniform up to 21st century standards? Maybe just a few tweaks here and there - sunflower glasses, polka dot skirts and a Lady Gaga inspired sun hat for the girls, and some tight fitting jeans, suit jacket and slippers for the boys. But instead, the old school uniform received an overwhelming vote of support from a pupil poll conducted this term. The long, dark blue, belted coat, worn with coordinating knee breeches, yellow socks and white neck bands – substantially unaltered since the Tudor period – was the subject of a school survey which confirmed that 95% of respondents were proud to wear it and rejected any suggestion of change. Pupils across all seven year groups were sampled for views on whether the uniform was a funda-

positive with their views on the school’s uniform, ceremonies and traditions. Christ’s Hospital’s Head Master John Franklin commented today. “We were delighted to see that there is continuing support for our unique uniform and long-standing traditions. “It is clear that, like past generations of pupils, they regard the uniform with a sense of pride and see it as a positive element for unity and identity.” Former pupils of Christ’s Hospital School, known as ‘Old Blues’ in a reference to the Tudor-style uniform, are equally supportive of the distinctive uniform. Actor Jason Flemyng recalls: “I always loved the school uniform. It meant that we were all the same and part of something important.” The School has been in West Sussex for over a hundred years on a two hundred acre site, south-west of Horsham which currently hosts 800 pupils.

Creation of new habitat We go to great lengths these days to protect our wildlife. New housing sites have been held up by the presence of certain species, such as Great Crested Newts, new road schemes pulled because of Dormouse discoveries, and developers in some areas have to carry out extensive wildlife searches before building, moving any animals to other areas. It’s one of the few things that most people are happy to accept the costs that are incurred. So most readers will be pleased to hear that the Environment Agency and Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) have

started extensive work to restore the stream at the Trust’s Woods Mill nature reserve near Henfield. The work will re-naturalise the area to include a fully functioning river system reconnected with its floodplain. It will create new habitat for wetland bird species such as snipe, kingfisher and little egret as well as for dragonflies and bats who feed on insects attracted to the water and for sea trout. The stream has been moved from its present course to the lowest point in the floodplain by the creation of gentle meanders, riffles (areas of fast flowing water) and oxbow

The line of the old river will still retain some water, providing a static pool for pond insects and small mammals such as the water shrew. In addition, the Environment Agency is constructing a fish pass upstream of the restoration site to allow fish such as the protected sea trout to access new breeding grounds. Hannah Wright speaking for Environment Agency said: “The new fish pass will allow sea trout and other fish species to access areas previously virtually impassable.

“Together with the restoration scheme, it will improve a large stretch of the Woods Mill stream for many species of fauna and flora.” Steve Tillman, Reserves Officer at SWT said: “When the project is completed there will be greater habitat diversity on site enhancing everyone’s enjoyment of a visit to the Woods Mill nature reserve. “Visitors will be able to walk around the new landscape (when it is not flooded) and see the river course develop and change into a new valuable wetland habitat from specially constructed viewing platforms.”

Life has returned to relative normality after the county, like most of the country, ground to a halt last week. While it took many of us several hours to clear just a small bit of road or driveway with a shovel last week, it was Mother Nature who rescued us from further holdups with a Friday night downpour. The Christmas charity market will go ahead on 12th December at 10am-2pm, while Festive Fun on the Forum (outside Beales) boasts Showtime Amusement from 16th December to January 4th from 11am to 6pm. On the afternoon of Saturday 18th, follow the re-scheduled Horsham Churches Together torch-lit procession through Horsham town centre from the Forum to the Carfax and join in with the carol service around the bandstand.

One event that did go ahead last weekend was Southwater’s annual Christmas Festival, despite the snow and ice. Events and attractions were moved inside Beeson House, and were a great success. Panto stars from Aladdin in Worthing, Mark “Rhino” Smith and Mark Wingett from ‘The Bill’ braved the severe weather conditions to come and open the event with Father Christmas. Nearly 200 children visited Father Christmas in his grotto, all receiving a gift and balloon courtesy of Southwater Parish Council. A day of entertainment and music was rounded off by a community carol concert around the Christmas tree, with a background of Christmas lights, in Lintot Square. The Parish Council, organisers of the Festival, would like to thank all those who had donated time, money and services to make this year a success, despite the weather.

A French duck farmer has been given a onemonth suspended sentence and fined 500Euros after feeding cannabis to his birds, saying it was an excellent dewormer. During June 2003, at 10 pm in West Sussex two friends were travelling, by car, from a friend’s house back home along a dark country road. They’d travelled this route many times but on this occasion got the shock of their life. As they came round a tight bend they both saw a movement in the trees ahead. Travelling at only 20 mph both occupants could clearly, although for a brief time, see a bizarre humanoid ‘monster’. A creature, standing over eight-feet in height stood in the woods and the car headlights reflected off what appeared to be a foil-like skin or clothing. The beast stepped upwards through the trees, its features were not discernible in the darkness and it moved away quickly uphill into the undergrowth, consumed by the shadows of night. The witnesses were stunned by this peculiar entity and so the driver, bravely, reversed the car back to the spot. There was no sign of the weird figure and no sound in

Sonia stars in Jack and the Beanstalk in 2006 It only seems like yesterday that TV’s Mr Tumble was firing sweets into the audience with a tennis racket (thanks for the box of Smarties...) as the star of the 2009 Capitol pantomime, Cinderella. Many things have happened since then - we finally realised that our national football team isn’t unlucky so much as not very good, and at the election we couldn’t really decide which of the three main parties we disliked the least - but 2010 does seem to have flown by. So let’s all cheer ourselves up by going to watch the Capitol’s panto! Over recent years, the Horsham panto has been getting better and better, culminating in last year’s record breaking run of Cinderella, sponsored by The Resident and starring Justin Fletcher as Buttons. It’s been gradually becoming more and more popular,

attracting big stars such as Faith Brown in 2004, Sonia and Mark Curry in 2006, Todd Carty in 2007 and Sarah Jane Honeywell in 2008. And this year, Anna Williamson, star of Saturday morning children’s TV show Toonattik, will be the star turn in the Capitol Theatre’s Christmas panto, Aladdin. Anna will be playing the title role in Aladdin, which has again been written by the theatre’s general manager Michael Gattrell, who was responsible for the hugely successful production of Cinderella last time around. Anna said: “I don’t think you can do it if you don’t love it. I’m really passionate about panto. “It really is a difficult skill - it’s an art form. People have tended to scoff at

Time to put on the glitz Last week we watched the town turn into a scene from a Christmas card, with a blanket of snow enveloping the streets and creating a glisten and sparkle which lit up the days! Yet by Saturday, the magic had disappeared and the streets were turned into grey slush and we all felt the cold. We grew weary of the dark days and enforced padding we had to wear to keep warm. So now is the time to strip off the layers and start to put the dazzle back into our lives! The snow garb can hide a multitude of sins but it is good not to feel like the Pirelli man every time you have to venture out! I have to confess to possibly being the only woman to walk home through 20 inches of snow in blue velvet high heels on Wednesday night! The snow boots did not do my new dress justice so it had to be done! After all the snow, I made a bid to reclaim the glamour by making a beeline for the Beales Beauty Gala on Monday 6th December and I was not disappointed! Looking back at 2010 - how did you do? At this time of year many of my clients are completing their year end review, looking back at what they’ve achieved throughout this year. Check you’ve got enough crockery, cutlery and wine glasses. Don’t forget to collect your turkey order or defrost it in plenty of time if you bought frozen. And if you’re not doing the cooking, buy a thank you gift for your host/ ess (flowers/wine always appreciated). Stock up on BATTERIES, light bulbs, toilet roll and sticky tape! (Booze and food is a given). Buy a TV guide and plan family viewing and recordings. Free up space on your Skybox/PVR and be ruthless - anything over 3 months old unviewed is unlikely ever to be watched. Prepare your car for long journeys - book in that service, buy new tyres or at very least check oil & tyre pressure before you set off. Buy some breakdown cover. Keep a blanket in the boot to keep you warm if you get stuck in the snow or traffic. Take a bag of essentials including snacks, toys, music, spare kids’ clothes, wet wipes and a plastic bag with no holes in the bottom for the inevitable over-excited ‘I feel sick’ moments! Decorate the house & office;

Hang front door wreaths outside and mistletoe inside. Schools break up a whole week before Xmas so plan in some activities to keep the kids from getting too bored or too excited. Maybe set up a few play-dates, book the cinema, go to the Panto or even the circus. Most schools close early on the last day of term so make sure you know what time they break up and remember to give their teachers a little gift. Plan sleeping arrangements and borrow or buy extra bedding. Check your airbed still holds air and your camp bed isn’t mouldy. Wash or dry clean sleeping bags. And so to Christmas Eve… if you don’t have a chimney, leave a Santa key or keep the catflap unlocked so the big man can get in. Don’t forget to leave a little snack for Santa and the Reindeer and be inventive - sherry and mince pies are always welcome but I hear he’s also partial to a Baileys and chocolate every

few houses. TOP TIP – Write a time plan for Christmas Day and delegate tasks evenly in advance (laying table, loading dishwasher, etc)… after all Christmas is about sharing!

Identity Hair and Beauty soars to new heights If you were out and about braving the icy weather on Saturday morning you may have seen a random collection of orange balloons floating above Horsham. But before you worry it wasn’t a balloon vendor with numb fingers or a small child lost in aid of Sussex Air Ambulance. The whole event is the brain child of Belinda Grover whose own nephew was saved by the air ambulance in a motor sport accident, “if it

wasn’t for the speed and the expertise of the air ambulance I don’t know what would have happened” says Belinda “they saved his life”. The week had been spent selling helium filled balloons for £1, with attached tags displaying a number and the Salon’s telephone number. The rules are the first balloon to reach the furthest distance with a responding phone call wins either a £50 voucher of the winners choice or a pair of GHDs.

The winner of last years balloon race travelled as far as the Isle of Wight. As well as the balloon race the girls had rearranged the Salon to fit in various stalls of goodies to help with the campaign and despite the poor weather they still raised an acceptable amount of money. “On behalf of all the team at Identity we would like to thank all of our customers who donated to this special cause with a special thanks to Wendy and Gwen for there lovely cakes and Pam for her scrumptious biscuits” says Belinda “ however we feel we can do better and are sure that if it wasn’t for the weather we would have raised more for the air ambulance” she continues “therefore we will keep the stalls open and more balloons on the ready for people come to in off the street and donate some money to this amazing cause”. Responding swiftly to 999 calls, air ambulances are able to deliver a medical crew to the scene of an accident or medical emergency and to transport patients to the nearest major hospital or specialist unit, in a fraction of the time taken by a land ambulance. Sussex has a complete HEMS Service (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service), and employs the highest possible clinical standards in pre hospital care. Million pound houses double The age of austerity is upon us, says David Cameron, so just why has the number of million pound property sales more than doubled over the past year? New research from the Halifax has revealed that home buyers with super-sized budgets are alive and well. The former building society has found that there were 2,992 million pound property sales in Britain in the first six months of this year, a whopping 118% more than in the same period last year. This figure is especially high when compared to a 27% increase in total house sales over the same period. Whilst million pound home sales do represent a very small proportion of the total market in Britain, the share of all sales has risen from 0.5% in the first half of 2009 to 0.9% in the first six months of 2010. There are now an estimated 170,000 homes in Britain worth at least £1 million. Unsurprisingly, London accounts for the highest proportion of million pound sales, at 4.5%. 89% of all million pound sales in the first six months of this year were in London and the South East; slightly higher than the 86% recorded in the first half of 2007.

New figures published today by the BBC* reveal that more than 600,000 cars on Britain’s roads have been clocked so they show lower mileages. This figure increases to 716,291 when vans and motorbikes are included, highlighting the need for consumers to protect themselves from unscrupulous sellers, says HPI.

The Black Horse from Nuthurst, good season continues, as their 6-2 win over the Fountain moves them in to third place, Matt Broadbent's 180 provided the Roffey side with some consolation. The Shelley Arms continue to dominate the B Division. they maintain their 100% record with a 5-3 win over the Norfolk Arms, with Justin Parkers 108 checkout the highlight. Southwater Club hammered the Rising Sun B 7-1, to move above the Sun in the table to third place, and close to within 2pts of the second team Bear Inn B who postponed their game with the Mill House. The Storrington Club lie a comfortable third, after ending the Plough's unbeaten record by winning 6-3, while in the battle of the two Alfold sides, the Crown edged a thriller with the Three Compasses 5-4. Horsham Sparrows Ladies are now in their third season playing in the Sussex County Women and Girls Football League. At the end of last season they lost the majority of their players as they left to go to university. With only three existing players remaining, the club has managed to recruit some new faces and

has had some great results considering that the team is once again, relatively new. Horsham make a point in a scrappy encounter A clean sheet, a point away from home and a jump of two places in the Ryman Premier Division table. Those, in a nutshell, were the few positives Horsham could take from a frustrating night on the Kent coast after this uninspiring bottom-of-the-table clash ended goalless for the second time this season. With both teams having seen recent matches postponed due to the wintry conditions, it was with some initial relief that the Folkestone ground staff had performed wonders in getting the Cheriton Road pitch playable but neither side were able to provide the performance to reward such sterling efforts and goal scoring opportunities were in scarce supply. Folkestone kicked the game off on a chilly evening where only 7 Horsham supporters stood behind the opposition goal but they were encouraged when Gary Charman, fit again after being laid low with the flu' virus, had the Hornets' first attempt on goal after just 3 minutes. Horsham Juventus made it through to the 3rd round of the Sussex Sunday Challenge Trophy with a 6-1 win over Lewes based Cinque Port Supernova. Horsham Juventus started the game very brightly and went ahead when good work on the right from last season's Players Player of the Year Aaron Mackay found an unmarked Ali Harvey who poked into an empty net. Juve doubled their lead when Harvey was through on goal only for Josh Archer to nick the ball from his toe and score with a nice placed finish. Cinque pulled one back, before Archer went on a mazy run, beating three defenders and smashing the ball past the outstretched keeper to put Juve 3-1 up. Aaron got reward for his hard work when he was free at the back post to tap in a Paul White cross. Josh Archer completed his hattrick when put through one-onone by skipper Tommy Di Martino and a late own goal made it 6-1.

Polina Zotova claimed the top spot in this year’s Academy Championship held recently. Polina, age 13, had showed potential all year in Cottesmore’s Junior Academy events but had not proved it in competition until the final event of the year. The championship was held over nine holes on the Phoenix course. Polina made her 36th shot on the ninth green; a complete hole ahead of her nearest competitor Kane Minter-Young. It was Kane’s second runner-up spot of the season but his major success was as winner in the Under 11’s tournament. Kane also won ‘Pupil of the Year Award’ for his conduct both on and off the golf course. The under 9’s event was won by Polina’s brother Egor – both follow in their mother’s footsteps. Mother Daria scooped a variety of cups in the Ladies section as well as winning external competitions. Newcomer to the Academy, Jack Williams, won the under 7’s event. The young players at the academy are coached by Cottesmore professional, Calum Callan. Throughout the year the young players have a mix of group and individual coaching plus on-course practice where they also learn golf etiquette and rules. The Academy Championship was the last tournament of the season.

Forest Yth trial

Forest Youth FC are offering two free taster sessions this coming Saturday 11th and 18th December for all year one school boys that are currently 5 or 6 year olds. The aim is to start weekly training with Youth Officer Jon Atkins with a view to joining a league come September 2011 as the new U7 Forest side. Forest Youth are a Charter Standard club and coaching is undertaken by FA qualified coaches with an approved safeguarding children certificate, an Enhanced CRB and Emergency Aid Qualified certificate.
