Horsham’s footballers are on the verge of one of the biggest days in the club’s 130-year history. The final of the Sussex Senior Cup will be played at the American Express Community Stadium, the spectacular new home of Brighton and Hove Albion, it was revealed this week. Horsham must win two more matches to get there, including a quarter-final at lower-ranked Burgess Hill Town on February 22. But Frank King and Don Duffield, who both watched the Hornets play in 1945, say it will be one of the top three or four

occasions in their 66 years as supporters if the part-time players do reach the final. The match, on July 16, will be the first ever played at the Amex in Falmer – even before Albion’s first team appear at the near-£100 million all-seater arena. Attendance at the final will be restricted to 10,000 supporters, 12,500 fewer than the capacity when the Seagulls play their first league match there in August.

I’m thrilled to bits with the idea and I hope there’s a big crowd, whoever gets through. “I saw my first Horsham match at Queen Street in 1945, just after the end of World War II. “The biggest games were the FA Cup matches at Notts County in 1947, when the great Tommy Lawton played against us, and at home to Swansea a few years ago.
