A Horsham woman has told of her shock after the building she used to live in was destroyed by arsonists. Liz de Cruz, of Redford Avenue, lived above House of Reeves, the furniture store in Croydon which made international headlines this week when it was burnt down during the London riots. The business has been at Reeves Corner for 144 years, run by five generations of one family. Mrs de Cruz was married to co-owner Trevor Reeves for about a decade from 1980 before divorcing and remarrying. The 59-year-old workplace trainer told The Resident: “We lived in a flat above for

about three years and were there at the time of the Brixton riots in 1981. “The flat was later made into a showroom, but we were quite fearful 30 years ago that the rioting would spread and that something would happen in Croydon. “Fortunately it didn’t. But it happened this week and they’ve destroyed part of Croydon. “My daughter Natasha phoned me, absolutely distraught. I turned on the TV and saw the shop on fire. Possibly Trevor had contacted Natasha. He had been contacted by people he knew in that area who had seen a group of youths by the shop. “Trevor drove down to the shop to see what was going on and was standing across the road when it went up in flames. He stood and watched, helpless. “There are a lot of political and social issues and people do these things for different reasons, but they couldn’t have got

anything out of this fire. They are pointless people. “It was a complete media scrum on Tuesday. (Prime Minister) David Cameron was in Croydon. (Mayor of London) Boris Johnson came over and talked to us. Politicians have to be seen to be doing the right thing, but the family is left to pick up the pieces and keep the business going. “I’ve just been watching my daughter on ITV’s This Morning. I was immensely proud of her and her composure, how she represented the family in the face of this horrendous thing that’s happened. “It’s devastating, but we are what makes Britain good and the business will keep going. It must keep a presence at Reeves Corner and we need everyone to get behind us to make that happen.” A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. Continued on Page 9

Youngsters fulfil their American dream Nine baseball players from Horsham Hornets represented Great Britain in the United States. Sam Boylett, Jacob Dean, Sam Ratcliff, Miguel Rodriguez, Joe Taylor and Callum Vinall were part of the GB Cadets (U16) squad, while Zack Chambers, Jordan Edmonds and Guy Packham were in the GB Juniors (U19) with former Horsham player Jamie Ratcliff. Jordan Edmonds kept this diary for The Resident.

Day 1 We met at Gatwick Airport, excited about the trip and looking forward to the week. The flight was very long, but we enjoyed the many films on show. As we arrived at Orlando we immediately noticed and felt the heat – an indication of what was to come. We were picked up by coach and taken to the hotel.

Day 2 We had light training and a warmup game against France. The heat and humidity made it very sticky and sweaty. None of the team expected these conditions and it became very draining. The game against France went very well. We put in a different pitcher every inning, so they prepared for the tournament.

Day 3 A game against a very highly ranked Florida travel team, one of the best in the state, was probably the biggest test of the week. For most of us, the pitching was the best we had seen so we had to adapt. Although we lost by a large margin it was a very helpful learning curve. We could see what level we need to get to. Day 4 We had a practice which was initially very hot and sticky, but a thunderstorm erupted and soaked all our equipment so practice was postponed. We were all very excited and nervous, but ready to prove what we could do. Day 5 We had our first game of the tournament, against a strong Canadian side. I was the starting pitcher, very excited that I got the start but somewhat nervous as I think we all were. I gave up six runs in five innings of pitching and was very pleased with that. We lost 6-1 but played very well. Later we had a game against the famous baseball nation of Puerto Rico, renowned for their fluid and flawless play. Jamie Ratcliff started and did a great job, giving up five runs. We

ended up losing 5-1 and were extremely proud of what we had achieved as in baseball that is a close game. We could hold our heads up high.

Day 6 A single game against Venezuela and our biggest loss of the tournament, 11-3, but we were swinging the bats and getting runs and we knew this would eventually pay off. Our pitchers were throwing strikes and we were consistently making fewer errors in the field. After the game we had the opportunity to watch a single A game, the Astros v Nationals and we saw some great pitching from young players in a Major League system. Day 7 A week into the tour and all of us were tired. Most took the opportunity to rest and relax in the pool and hotel. In the evening an ex-Major League all-star game took place, National League v American League, and we got to see some retired players. Some of them were old but they could still play. Our coach got the opportunity to play as they were short of players. This was quite funny as we encouraged him and were telling him things to do.

Great Britain Juniors (U19), including Horsham Hornets players Zack Chambers, Jordan Edmonds and Guy Packham and former Horsham player Jamie Ratcliff

Day 8 We were scheduled to play in the Minor League stadium against Venezuela Red again and we needed a win to progress into the latter stages. The stadium was incredible. The infield was the best we had played on and just being able to have an electronic scoreboard and Major League dugouts was exciting. We won 6-0, with an outstanding shut-out performance from Mike Dixon, and we finally had something to show for our hard work. After a 30-minute break we were into our next game with Puerto Rico. With their pitcher throwing at 92 mph we found it tough but adapted. We lost 7-3, which is an incredible result. Even getting a run was an achievement. Day 9 A game against Venezuela again in the morning and we carried on our winning ways with Jamie Ratcliff on the mound. It was my and Luke’s birthday, so this was a bonus. To the quarter-finals we went and

I was pitching against France. I had a shaky first innings but went five more innings conceding only one run and retiring 13 of the last 16 batters. We started our rally too late and lost 7-5. Our tournament had come to an end, but the whole team were proud of our achievement. Everyone became aware of Great Britain, saying things like: “I never knew you could play baseball. You’re really good.” Day 10 The Juniors and Cadets teamed up and split into two teams. We also had a presentation for the players moving on. Day 11 We got the coach to the airport in our black trousers and white shirts, looking smart. We were all disappointed that the tour had come to an end, as for many of us it was the best time of our lives. All the team had performed incredibly beyond expectations.

That’s a sandwich

Pulborough Village RIP?

Fundraisers each ate a 3ft-high sandwich, with six fillings, to raise money for a new Thinking Garden at Holbrook Primary School. Year 4 pupils came up with the idea of the garden as a tribute to Abigail Hargreaves, who died of cancer aged eight, and as a quiet place for other people to reflect. The eating event at Le Brunch, Swan Walk, raised £458.

Dozens of angry residents staged a mock funeral as they stepped up their campaign to prevent more than 100 new homes. A funeral procession, complete with a coffin bearing the slogan “Pulborough Rural Village RIP”, marched along the A29 from Stane Street Close and past the site of the proposed development to St Mary’s Church.

News in Brief

This is not about ‘nimbyism, it’s about protecting our community

Protesters say the greenfield site, proposed to be accessed by a narrow entrance at the junction of a railway bridge and pedestrian lights, is home to protected species such as dormice, bats and adders. They say the development would “effectively merge” Codmore Hill

into Pulborough and would be visible over 20 miles of the new South Downs National Park. Annie Williams, of the Campaign to Protect Rural Pulborough Village, told The Resident: “An urban sprawl is being created along the A29, destroying wildlife habitats and increasing traffic on the main London Road which is already incredibly busy. “Further development will put increased pressure on the already strained local infrastructure, pushing it beyond its limit. ”More than nine developments representing hundreds of new homes have been built in the village in the last 10 years and another 100 are already under construction. “This is not about nimbyism, it’s about protecting our community and trying to stop Pulborough becoming a soulless dormitory town.” Ben Cooper, who led the funeral procession dressed as a cardinal, said: “Hanbury Properties have run a PR campaign for the develop-

ment on the basis of a promised contribution to a footbridge as part of the development. “Their marketing materials highlight a bridge which they know they cannot possibly deliver. “A footbridge over the railway line would be hugely beneficial, as the road bridge is already a problem for pedestrians, especially young children walking to and from the primary

Two hurt in crash Two drivers were seriously injured in a crash on the A283 Steyning-bypass, near the roundabout outside Bramber Castle. A Vauxhall Astra driven by a 55-year-old man from Shoreham collided head-on with a Skoda Fabia driven by a 38-year-old woman from Brighton at about 10.45am on Sunday. The Astra caught fire. The woman was airlifted to Kings College Hospital, London, with serious head and internal injuries and the man was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, for slight injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle. Anyone who saw what happened can phone Sussex Police on 0845 6070999, quoting Operation Larkhill.

Support firefighters West Sussex Fire and Rescue is encouraging people to recycle their unwanted clothing to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity. Teaming up with recycling partner LMB, the fire service has placed bright yellow recycling clothing banks outside many fire stations. Spokesman Andy Tonks said: “We hope locating the banks outside our fire stations will encourage residents to think about supporting firefighters by recycling their unwanted clothes, as well as doing their bit for the environment. “It’s also a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of our free home fire safety check, so we can continue to help make our local communities safer.” For more information about the charity, visit www.firefighterscharity. org.uk

school. “Network Rail is responsible for the site and has always refused to countenance a pedestrian footbridge. There is no public funding available to make up the estimated £750,000 shortfall to build a pedestrian bridge. “Any new development near the railway bridge will make the route even more dangerous for pedestrians and motorists.” Lorraine Dale said: “Pulborough has been overrun by development. Before much longer there will not be any green spaces left in the village. “We are not against people moving into the village. What we’re against is large development, especially when there are about 300 properties already for sale in Pulborough which are not selling. “The majority of the residents in Pulborough do not support this development, despite comments from the developers and some parish councillors that we are in support of more development.”

News in Brief Airlifted to hospital A woman was airlifted to Kings College Hospital, London, after a collision on the Guildford Road, Clemsfold. Firefighters freed the 52-year-old from a white Peugeot Cabriolet after the crash, which happened at about 10am on Friday last week. Her injuries were serious but not life-threatening. New backing for sporting prospects Talented young sportspeople are being invited to apply for money to help them fulfil their dreams. And businesses can become associated with the Set4Success scheme by getting involved too. Led by the Rotary Club of Horsham in partnership with local schools, the scheme is supported by Horsham District Council, DC Leisure, SportsAid and local sports organisations and businesses. The scheme’s first fund will support young sportspeople in the district who have been recognised by their sport’s governing body but are not yet at the level where they are financed by Lottery funding. The aim is to provide them with £1,000 per year through SportsAid, a charity which will identify young people who qualify for support and live in the district. A second fund is being created to provide financial support to young children who are recognised as excelling in their chosen sport but who may otherwise give up due to a lack of money. Schools, businesses, sports clubs, social clubs and other bodies across the district will be encouraged to organise simple fundraising activities, such as dress-down days and collections. In conjunction with SportsAid, Set4Success beneficiaries will be expected to visit donors and talk about their sport, motivation, success and goals, helping motivate other youngsters to take part in sports. SportsAid can arrange for highprofile sports personalities to attend

fund-related community events. There is a charge for this, which is taken from the fund, but it is much less than would normally be expected. Eight sportspeople aged between 13 and 17 received Set4Success financial awards from Karen Pickering MBE, the multiple gold medallist swimmer, at The Capitol in May. Seven of the eight live in Horsham district and attend school or college

here – volleyball player Elliott Allison, rugby union player Chris Bond, athlete Jade Brewster, baseball ace Jared Cox, badminton player David King, cyclist Tom Laker and karate champion Ryan Morter. Diver Lauren Grinstead lives in Chichester but attends The Weald School, Billingshurst. The fund was officially launched with a Youth Sports Challenge as part of Sparks in the Park last month.

Patrons include Horsham MP Francis Maude, Sussex cricketer Chris Nash, world record swimmer Gemma Spofforth, Dave Benson Phillips and Sarah Jane Honeywell. Business supporters include AToM, Ringway Ltd, Sony, Southern Water, Spofforths, Treetop Design and Print, and Wakefields Jewellers. The next award committee will meet in late September. News in Brief Slinfold’s success Slinfold Pre-School is “outstanding”, according to Ofsted. The inspector’s report said: “The pre-school is extremely well organised and is quietly, yet highly effectively, led by the supervisor with a very supporting staff team. “All children are extremely well settled within the provision. They are highly motivated and eager to attend as they separate very quickly from their parents. “As the morning progresses they show high levels of concentration and motivation, being able quickly to settle and focus on their chosen activity. “The children are developing the skills they need to secure future learning and they work exceptionally well independently.” Head teacher Jacky Lamb said: “We are particularly delighted as all staff and governors have worked very hard to raise standards. “Jo Bates, pre-school supervisor, who has only been in post since November 2010, is to be especially congratulated.”

Terry’s all sold A Broadbridge Heath man watched his first ‘live’ professional football match for 53 years. Terry Oliver, 66, was 13 when he saw Chelsea play at Stamford Bridge in 1958. That was his only visit to a football ground until this week, when he saw a Carling Cup tie between Brighton and Hove Albion and Gillingham at the American Express Community Stadium, Falmer. Mr Oliver said: “It was like a mini Olympic stadium and I’ll be going back there.” His wife, Jenny, saw her first ‘live’ professional match on Tuesday.

Developers told – we’re not stupid “Greedy” developers should be ashamed after submitting plans for up to 550 homes in Southwater. That is the view of pressure group Keep Southwater Green (KSG), which believes Berkeley Homes would destroy “the green and pleasant land around the village”. As www.the-resident.co.uk revealed last month, Horsham District Council is set to abandon the socalled interim statement approach, which could have paved the way for 500 homes in Southwater and 500 more in Billingshurst. But the council will still have to consider planning applications on merit and KSG has warned that the battle against inappropriate development is far from over. Berkeley Homes says its development would include a “substantial” number of affordable homes, eliminate morning queues by providing a new slip road onto the A24, offer safe and better drop-off and pick-up points for both local primary schools, allocate 19 acres for a future secondary school, provide substantial investment in existing schools and improve the viability of local shops. A spokesman for Berkeley Homes said: “Good access, a great location, super local facilities and the ability to meet all infrastructure requirements have meant district planners have always identified Southwater as a prime sustainable location to benefit from further development. “Only the absence of a local centre has held this back and this has now been provided. “Berkeley, which is based in Billingshurst, has a deep knowledge of the communities in Horsham district

Ian Thwaites, of Keep Southwater Green

and a strong record of high-quality, innovative local development which reflects the local and Sussex design characteristics. “Unlike most house-builders, Berkeley always remains committed to building out planned developments. By working with the community, it is able to guarantee that the benefits offered are delivered.

is no mention ‘ofThere what they will destroy ’

“The provision of homes for people with urgent housing needs as a result of this development is a tremendous gain and Berkeley would like priority to be given to Southwater residents. “Similarly Southwater residents will always be offered the first

opportunity to purchase a new home. “Because of the district planners’ focus on Southwater, which goes back many years, Berkeley has worked with the parish council and Southwater community interest groups to understand local issues. “Listening to local views has been an essential part of this process.” Gary Hodges, managing director of Berkeley Homes (Southern) said: “I am proud of the quality of the development we produce. “Working with local communities enables us to identify and meet local needs while producing a development that incorporates the highestquality design and building standards. “We share a common objective with the local community to see that benefits are achieved and as a result find that many of the homes we produce are occupied by local people.” But in a statement issued to The Resident, Keep Southwater Green

responded: “As has been the case throughout this attempt to build massively on the Fletcher Trust land in Southwater, Berkeley’s have produced another document strong on vague promises of ‘gain’ but singularly lacking in detail and guarantees. “Consider some of the heralded ‘gains’. The slip road may improve the ease with which the A24 is accessed, but I wonder what effect they think the extra cars will have on the Worthing Road into Horsham in the morning. “While claiming the enormous benefit of affordable houses being made available, they refuse to say how many! We would be lucky to get 20 per cent. Is that such a good deal? “It is interesting that the public promise of being able to bring forward funding to build a secondary school has vanished. “But the clear plan to build another 2,500 houses later is laid bare when they talk of the land set aside now being brought into use later. Do they think we are stupid? “There is no mention of what they will destroy. No mention of the loss of productive farmland or the Charman family who have tenanted Great House Farm for nearly 200 years and who desperately want to continue. “No mention of the damage to the environment and the loss of the most precious attribute of all – the green and pleasant land around the village, in every survey the main reason why so many people want to live in Southwater. “They should be ashamed of themselves because they do know all of this. It is simply greed – their gain at our expense.”

News in Brief All sewn up Students at Needles and Pins Sewing Club enjoyed a busy day, making clothes for themselves at The Holbrook Club. Helen Windwood, who led the day, said: “All the girls have worked incredibly hard and have been rewarded for their efforts. “We’ve still got a few hems to take up, but we’ve had great fun learning some new skills and practising our sewing machine techniques.” Daisy, 10, said: “I have had lots of fun. Sometimes my sewing is a bit wobbly, but I am really pleased with my pyjama bottoms – I shall be wearing them tonight.”

Council at Pride West Sussex County Council will be represented at Brighton Pride tomorrow (Saturday). Council leader Louise Goldsmith, who will be joining staff for part of the day, said: “We want people to come along and find out more about what the council does. “This is also a chance to demonstrate our commitment to our local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.” The charity Stonewall rates the county council as one of the UK’s top 100 LGB-friendly employers.

Use it or lose it Campaigners fighting to save the 86 bus service from Horsham to Haywards Heath are to launch a “use it or lose it” appeal. Caroline Collins, from Cowfold, said in an email to supporters: “We hope to compile a brochure full of places to visit and things to do on the 86 bus route. “Please make a special effort to use the 86 (and the 17!). We need to show the bus operators that it is worth their while operating this route commercially once the subsidy from the council is withdrawn.”

Croydon to Horsham

Sparks of enjoyment

I’m an ex-Croydonian who now lives in Horsham. Though shocked and dismayed by the events of the past few days, it really doesn’t surprise me. There are too many people in today’s society who believe they are owed a living. They fail to see that they must take responsibility for their own lives. I know it’s not a problem for Croydonians alone, but I’m drawing from my own experience. It is common in Croydon to see gangs of youths roaming the streets, claiming there’s nothing in the way of a future for them and that this makes it okay to act shamefully. It’s disgraceful. These kids are spoilt brats. The past government took powers away from parents, teachers and police. Instead of new laws to keep bad behaviour at bay, the laws appear to have been slackened, in the name of human rights. To echo the voice of so many others, I say ‘what about the human rights of the victims?’ I am fed up with the way society has been declining. For heaven’s sake, we have wifebeating footballers and Page 3 girls as role-models for our kids! If I was in Mr Cameron’s shoes, I’d be seriously considering laws on prosecuting parents of persistent offenders. Myself and my husband moved away from Croydon about 10 years ago, firstly to Crawley then Horsham, and we haven’t looked back. We now have four children and feel we have moved to the perfect place to raise a family. Rather than look at the ground when we pass a neighbour, we now greet them with a cheery ‘good morning’ or even stop to have a quick natter. These are the things I remember my mother doing back in Croydon when I was young, which certainly don’t happen anymore. While the older generation of Horsham may feel this town has declined in recent years, I can honestly say Horsham is worlds away from Croydon – and long may it continue to be.

I am writing to thank everybody involved in Sparks in the Park for putting on such a wonderful show. The atmosphere and community spirit was brilliant. As a mother of a child with additional needs and as organiser of the local charitable group You Can Do It!, I would like to thank the Rotary Club of Horsham, Benson’s Funfair, Sussex Fun Days and Busydays Face Painters for arranging and running the morning of Sparks. Disabled children and those with additional needs and their families and friends were given two hours of fantastic fun, absolutely free of charge. Due to the crowds and noise, it is usually very difficult for us to be able to take our children to funfairs. To be able to do so in a relatively quiet and relaxed environment was simply a rare pleasure for us all. The children and families all had such a great time. What a very good article by Paul Chapman, “Why I’m a cycling convert, thanks to The Resident” (The Resident, August 5). I work with Paul and know he is very keen to cycle. Recently I have been out cycling with my son, who is also a very keen cyclist. We have found that some of the cycle lanes around Horsham are actually sending you along the road. This does not make it very safe as there are parked cars all along the route. Hopefully with more people being converted to cycling (sorry to pinch your headline), more safer cycle lanes will be provided. And hopefully this article will bring more attention to the issue. WANT A PLATINUM RING ? A customer brought me a beautiful Star Sapphire and Diamond ring she had made a while ago in India, valued around £3000. “Iʼm bored with it” she said. I noticed she, like most people, is now wearing white gold so I suggested having the ring Rhodium Plated. This is a process that turns yellow gold to white gold within an hour and cost only £35.00 as opposed to £800.00 for a new mount.

I just want to say a big thank you from my son William and I. We won the Cars 2 competition, went to see the film and had a great time. It was Will’s first trip to the cinema and he loved it. He was thrilled with his toys and other bits you gave him too. You guys really made his day! Michelle Skeet Redford Avenue, Horsham

Thank you so much for including the Barns Green and Slinfold cycling route (The Resident, August 5). Having moved to Horsham this time last year, we are always on the lookout for ways to get to know the area. This bike ride was beautiful – mainly downhill and worth it to see the old church in Itchingfield. Please include more cycle and walking routes in the area in your newspaper. ‘I watched my first home burn to the ground’ Continued from Page 1 Liz de Cruz posted this message on Facebook: “Please all ex-Croydonians support Reeves of Croydon. We did not deserve this. The family have had the heart ripped out of us. I watched my first home burn to the ground. We need the support of people to keep the business going.” The message sparked many responses, including these.

Internet rumours trouble the police False rumours of trouble in Sussex circulated on the internet this week, causing unnecessary work for police. A police spokesman said: “Sussex Police’s call handling centre has been experiencing a high volume of calls from well-meaning people reporting rumours in relation to potential unrest in the county. “The majority of these rumours, generally generated through social networking sites, proved to be false and have been third-hand, or even fourth-hand, information. Sussex has still not experienced any incidents. “Anyone who hears about potential unrest first-hand or witnesses it themselves is asked to phone Sussex Police.” Asst Chief Con Nick Wilkinson said: “Although we sent support on

Tuesday to our colleagues in the Met, it was equally important for us to make sure that the people of Sussex knew we were putting local needs first when considering this support. “The county was carefully monitored and we were prepared for any disorder relating to the national unrest as well as serving Sussex as normal. “It was important that we reacted quickly and accurately to any rumours and concerns, particularly those that continued to come via social media sites. “It is very heartening to see so many positive and appreciative messages coming back to us from communities across Sussex, particularly on Twitter, and shows that such information sources can be used as a power for the good.”

Play area to reopen after arson An arson-hit play area is likely to reopen next week. A climbing frame was partly destroyed, along with decking, fencing and “flame-retardant” matting, in the children’s play area at Southwater Country Park on April 28. But district councillor Jonathan Chowen, Cabinet member for arts, heritage and leisure, said: “Horsham District Council has made a commitment to replace the fire-damaged play equipment. “Funding for the play area originally came from Lottery funding, not from the district council taxpayer.

underway and we are aiming to have the equipment on the mound open at the end of next week. “Some of the final repairs, for example some of the replacement of one of the set of steps to the top of the

mound, will take a little longer owing to the availability of contractors. “We have had a phenomenal response from the local community, with many people being incredibly supportive. Thank you to everyone

We can end up with an ‘even better, more exciting and more adventurous play area

concerned for this. “The repair works are estimated to be in the region of £24,000, but we are in the planning stages of a community-led fundraising event to raise money for the play area. “A number of supportive local residents are leading the fundraising effort. “If enough local people can be encouraged to join in, we can end up with an even better, more exciting and more adventurous play area for residents and their families to enjoy for many years to come.” Anyone who wants to get involved in fundraising for the new play area can call Horsham District Council on 01403 215257. Horsham District Community Safety Partnership is offering £500 to anyone who provides information used in the successful prosecution of the person or people responsible for the fire. Cllr Robert Nye, leader of Horsham District Council, told The Resident in May: “We do not normally offer rewards. However, on this occasion the damage is extensive and will deprive a large number of our residents, many of them young children, of a valued facility.

Equipment fit for Broadbridge Heath Outdoor fitness equipment has been installed at recreation areas in Charrington Way and behind the Village Centre in Wickhurst Lane, Broadbridge Heath. Funding for the project came from Broadbridge Heath Parish Council and developers following the original development at Charrington Way.

Full Installation or Supply Only

Free Parking

Cllr Viv Edwards, chairman of the parish council, said: “The idea is to promote fitness by providing members of the community with exercise equipment that is accessible, easy to use, free and fun. “The individual pieces were specially chosen so they are suitable for ages nine to 90, from beginners to experts and for use by individuals or groups of people. Most of the items can be used by two people at a time. “For those who are less fit, there is the opportunity to take gentle exercise and maybe increase strength and flexibility, while at the other end of the scale it is possible to undertake a

rigorous cardiovascular workout. “The parish council requests that all users read the ‘instructions for use’ and ‘safety instructions’ on each piece of equipment and respect near neighbours when using the recreation areas. “Despite having only been installed a few days ago, the equipment has already proved to be extremely popular, with a number of residents of mixed ages and abilities having a go. “We hope all villagers in Broadbridge Heath will go along and enjoy their new fitness equipment very soon. Now there’s no excuse for not going to the gym!”

A West Chiltington schoolboy will today (Friday) start a 100-mile bike ride across the South Downs Way, raising money for Sussex Air Ambulance. Jack Algar and his father Stuart aim to cycle from Winchester in Hampshire to Eastbourne in just two days. Jack chose the life-saving service because he lives near the Downs, where the helicopter often lands to airlift injured horse riders, mountain bike riders and walkers. The Rydon Community College pupil is keen to support the life-saving charity, which relies almost entirely on public donations and receives no National Lottery funding. He said: “I’ve decided to cycle the whole of the South Downs Way. I want to do it for Sussex Air Ambulance because I know they help a lot of people on the South Downs. “It’s going to be quite exciting but quite hard to complete the ride in that time. My friends at school think it’s quite a big challenge.” Jack, of Copse View, is more than halfway towards his target of £300 and will ride a mountain bike he won in an Easter Egg hunt organised by South Downs Bikes, Storrington.

Stuart, 41, said: “We are immensely proud of Jack and this is a huge challenge for someone so young. Although it will be hard work, we are really looking forward to it.” If you would like to sponsor Jack, visit www.justgiving.com/ Jack-AlgarSussexAirAmbulance He is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and can be sponsored by visiting www.justgiving.com/ Jack-AlgarMacmillanCancerSupport

Store begins year-long support of charity Following a vote by customers, Sainsbury’s kicks off 12 months of fundraising to help blind and partially sighted people James Hood Business Editor

james@the-resident.co.uk

Sainsbury’s supermarket in Horsham has begun its fundraising activities for Guide Dogs for the Blind, the charity chosen by customers to receive its support for the next 12 months. Staff members at the store, on Worthing Road, recently set up a stall to collect donations from customers. They also held an obedience class, at which people who work at the supermarket dressed as dogs and were put through their paces. The event was the start of a number of fundraising activities which colleagues at the store will be taking part in during a year-long partnership with Guide Dogs for the Blind,

as part of Sainsbury’s ‘Local Charity Partner’ scheme. The nominated charity was chosen after customers had the opportunity to vote for the organisation they wanted to benefit from the help earlier this year. With the partnership in the early stages, store manager Ian Maxey said he hopes the day of fun will help to raise the profile of the partnership. “Our colleagues chose Guide Dogs for the Blind because its aims and objectives really touched the hearts of many of our colleagues and customers. “We hope that this early fundraiser will show our Horsham customers that we’re passionate about giving help and support throughout our year’s partnership. We also hope our customers will join in the fun and support this very worthy local

community charity.” At the first event for the partnership, customers had the opportunity to give money to the cause. There was also a lucky dip and a Puppy Dog Hunt around the store for children. Guide Dogs for the Blind has been running for 80 years this October and aims to deliver a guide dog service and other mobility services to enable blind and partially sighted people to be more independent. Phillipa Jan, District Fundraiser of The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, is looking forward to working with Sainsbury’s Horsham across the next 12 months. She said: “We were delighted when the store announced that they will be supporting us for a year and we hope that this fundraiser will help to raise the profile of their colleagues contribution to our cause further”.

Write compelling copy that leads to sales Continuing a series of excerpts of her new book, exclusively in The Resident, Dee Blick explains how you can write words that work harder for your business As a young marketer, one of the first things drummed into me was that before I put pen to paper and started writing sales communications I had to create a positioning statement for the business I was looking to promote. A positioning statement is simply a succinct, clear and unambiguous description of what you offer. It comprises a series of bullet points. You may also have heard it referred to as a benefit statement. You are well on the way to creating your positioning statement having identified the barriers to a sale and understanding how your product or service best fits the needs of the people you want to target. (Something covered in the previous section) Look at the landscape through the eyes of the people that buy from you. If you really want your sales messages to resonate, include the specific benefits relevant to those target groups in your overall positioning statement. For example, if we look again at business coaching for franchisees, a key message was that the coach had many years experience working with small businesses and some working specifically with franchisees. When targeting senior executives

in blue-chip organisations, these facts would not be relevant. Executives will be more interested in the life coach’s experience with other executives and how they had specifically helped them to progress. The qualifications and accreditations of the business coach however would be important to highlight to all target groups. In this case therefore the business coach would note in his positioning statement that his sales message to the franchisees would include his previous experience working with small businesses whereas when communicating with senior executives he would concentrate instead upon the experience he gained with blue-chip organisations. The complimentary session on offer, his qualifications and accreditations would be appropriate to all. In effect, your positioning statement is your copywriting anchor. It prevents you from floundering when tasked with producing written materials to promote your business. Rather than desperately searching for inspiration the answers will be in this document. Make sure that you update it regularly to avoid falling into the trap of writing communications based on old and weary data.

Business Proudly sponsored by

Let’s turn our attention now to what could influence your sales message. People rarely make the decision to buy your products or services in isolation. Their decision will be based on a number of factors including: how your messages are presented; your overall branding - including how your business looks on paper and online and how you and any employees inspire and impress; their budget; how you demonstrate that you offer real value; any knowledge of or existing relationships with competitors and, how high on their agenda is their need. It will also help to consider what is happening in their wider world that could have an impact on their ability and desire to do business with you. For example, when the recession struck, Techmobility a Sussex-based business that adapts vehicles for disabled motorists became exposed to a downturn in sales of new motor vehicles which threatened to undermine their growing business. Yet the company actually managed to grow their business in a year in which car sales fell by 13%. Subtle changes were made to the sales messages, further emphasising how motor dealership could save time and money by using Offices in Brighton, Chichester, Horsham, Storrington and Worthing

BHW Glass celebrates 30th birthday Great customer service and high-standards sees local business through three decades BHW Glass in Partridge Green is celebrating 30 years in business. The company, which is a specialist in PVC and aluminium doors, windows, folding doors, and conservatories, is a family-run business and prides itself on providing a personal service. Anna Walker, who works as the office manager for BHW Glass, said: “We understand how important it is for people to get good service. That’s why we are always on the other end of the phone so people can talk to us, instead of an automated message. That ethos extends into our service and installation team too. Everyone here takes great pride in what they do.” Much of the company’s success can

also be attributed to the products they supply. At a time when people are more aware of their impact on the environment through carbon emissions as well as trying to keep costs down, BHW Glass has been able to provide customers with what they want. But it hasn’t all been plain sailing for the business. Owners, Bob and Fran Walker have seen the business through two major recessions and tough economic times. Bob said: “We have been through some difficult periods. But I think if you provide a product that is in demand and you give good service, you can be successful – for three decades! It takes a lot of hard work and commitment

Businesses in Partridge Green ‘keep it local’ A new local produce event has been set up in Partridge Green to allow small, independent businesses to sell their products. ‘Beer and Bunting’ was set up by Sarah Westall, owner of Just Brownies, who wanted to give her own business and other companies a cost effective way of selling goods, as well as giving the people of the village the opportunity to buy them without having to travel too far. The first of the events will take place on Monday, August 29 and Sarah hopes to make them quarterly in the future. She said: “I was unable to secure a stall at the Local Farmers Markets,

so thought ‘I’ll start my own!’, giving Just Brownies and other small local businesses somewhere to trade from, but also giving something back to the local community. “With the support of Dark Star a new, ever-expanding business in the village, ‘Beer and Bunting - Keeping it local’ was born. If it is a success I would like to organise something seasonal, every Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter to begin with.” There is space for between 20 and 25 stalls and a small fee applies to cover the cost of the venue. The company offers secure, A-rated windows and doors of the highest standard. The products also come in any colour and

can be made from timber, complementing the look of any home without detracting from its character. In addition, BHW Glass is a member of FENSA and the Plastic Window Federation, meaning customers have added guarantees when they make a purchase. For more information, visit www.bhwglass.co.uk

Last Sunday I was watching the businessperson’s TV equivalent of required reading, Dragons Den. Oh how we smirk when they fluster and bluster through their pitches, foul up their demonstrations and look south when the thorny issue of figures is broached. The grinding deconstruction of a life’s work makes compelling if sometimes uncomfortable viewing. The preoccupation of Theo Paphitis with breaking things, Duncan Bannatyne’s overuse of the word ‘ridiculous’, Peter Jones’ haughty flirtation and Deborah Meaden’s sour-faced outrage are simply joys to behold. Now, the addition of a woman who is the living, breathing embodiment of a dragon, Hilary Devey, completes this fiery line-up with a look and sound that blends the fashion sensibilities of Cruella De Ville with the earthy tones of Jack Duckworth. Perfect. In the cosy glow of our lounges, it may be tempting to laugh at these budding entrepreneurs and rubbish their attempts at diverting monies from Theo’s children’s inheritance fund, but in the cold light of the business day, could we do any better? I for one have done many presentations but never have I been subjected to the microscopic scrutiny you see on the Den. I dare say I’d falter if Duncan did his ‘turnover is vanity, profit is sanity’ line on me and a withering look from Ms Meaden could CTR-ALTDEL my brain in a nanosecond. So all of this excitement led me to the fantasy of standing in The Den pitching my business. What exactly do these cauldren-breathed investors want and how would I go about gaining their attention? Well the obvious answer is that they want a nice juicy return on investment and in order to attract even a flicker of interest, I’d need to present a compelling idea together with a well thought out business plan, evidence of achievements, a scalable business model and realistic projections. Reversing that back into my business, well I have to say there could be room for improvement and a lesson we could all learn from taking our business back to the start and creating an investor pitch rather than just a sales one. Finally, aside from all the facts and figures, there is a word that unifies all the dragons and is often a clincher for a keen investor’s eye. That word is passion. All entrepreneurs thrive on it so we could conclude that it takes one, to invest in one. I’m out. Visit www.businessbuilderclub. co.uk for latest news of club dates and venues.

How Sue McColl lost 4 stone on the sit & slim chair! S

NHS hospital trial proves sit & slim works.

ue McColl, 70 and from Chessington in Surrey has a history of ill health and has been on medication to help with a variety of health issues for many, many years. She has tried just about every kind of diet plan there is and says she was the typical yo-yo dieter, losing some weight only to put it back on soon after. She was always up and down and so felt, like so many with weight problems, helpless, demotivated and very low about herself. It’s fair to say her self esteem and confidence was non-existent and like most yo-yo dieters she would console herself when feeling down with sweet foods and ‘treats’ which of course negatively adds to her overall weight, having nothing but adverse effects. On top of all of this Sue is a diabetic and has to regularly use a dialysis machine as she also needs a kidney transplant. With regular and multiple trips to and from her GP it soon became clear to her that to get onto the kidney transplant waiting list she had to achieve a significant drop in her weight to then be deemed ‘low risk’. Weighing nearly 17 stone she had to lose at least five stone to give herself a chance. Due to all of Sue’s health issues she had to be pushed in a wheelchair by her daughters whenever she wanted to go shopping which would tire her out very quickly and of course keep her confidence at a constant low. She longed to be like other ‘normal’ people who could just walk themselves around the shops without any assistance. It was then that Sue discovered the Miruji Wellbeing Chair and the Sit&Slim programme. The Miruji chair is a state-of the-art Japanese therapeutic wellbeing chair combined with cutting edge audio programmes that use Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques. She saw an advertisement in her local paper offering the first 30 minute session for FREE and at her wits end with her constant battle to lose weight; she went along to her local Miruji wellbeing centre to try it for herself. When Sue first sat in the chair she weighed 17 stone. She went on to have 2 hours of treatment a week, enjoying the feeling of total relaxation the chair provides. Each treatment she would listen to the various audio programmes, noticing each time the dramatic difference in her mood, her heightened level of relaxation but most importantly her improved motivation and mindset after each of these sessions. She felt lifted, inspired and reassured that maybe this could be the solution she had been searching for, for so many years. Sue lost a stone in weight after just 1 month. The second month she lost a further stone followed by 10 lbs in the third month. Sue has now lost 4 stone in weight in just 19 weeks. Her doctor has even remarked just how amazing the transition in her has been. Initially slightly sceptical, her doctor now fully believes the treatment in the chair combined with the powerful audio programme have directly resulted in Sue losing the required weight which has in turn enabled her to gradually reduce and even come off the amount of medication she has been on. Sue can now walk herself for hours around her local shopping centre in Kingston upon Thames, no longer requiring assistance, her self-esteem has gone through the roof and her confidence and overall sense of wellbeing has increased, raising her whole outlook on life. She exudes positivity now where before it was all doom and gloom with no end to her suffering in sight. Rejuvenated and upbeat, Sue’s life, she believes, has radically improved for the better and she attributes this entirely to the Miruji Sit & Slim chair. Sue is living proof that the Sit & Slim chair can and does work and recommends anyone suffering similar weight problem as she did, to go along and try it for themselves.

Entertainment All genres welcome at Gig Guide 2011 Battle of the Bands the-resident.co.uk/entertainment

Horsham Area

The town’s popular live music event is now accepting entries, and cash and rehearsal space are up for grabs James Hood Entertainment Editor

james@the-resident.co.uk

Battle of the Bands is back! Horsham’s live music competition takes place throughout October and November and bands can now enter.

Killing Vegas

The event is organised by The Horsham District Live Music Alliance who welcome entries from covers bands as well as those that write and perform their own material. Horsham’s Battle of the Bands is one of the best ways for local bands to showcase their talent and get experience playing in front of large crowds. Acts are backed by a great sound system and supported by an experienced crew. Bands that take part get valuable exposure among music lovers in the area who faithfully attend the event in their hundreds. It has been a springboard to success for many talented performers. Although the competition attracts a lot of rock bands, groups of any genre are welcome to enter. From death metal to hip-hop, or barbershop quartets to grime. If you can do it live, give it a shot! Winners of this year’s first prize in the ‘Originals’ competition will walk away with £500, plus a day in a recording studio, two free practises at QM studios and free use of the HDLMA PA system.

Second place gets you a cheque for £250 and two free rehearsals and third prize is £100 and one free rehearsal. Winners of the Covers competition is £150 plus one free rehearsal at QM studios and use of the Alliance PA for one gig. The winner of the Acoustic section gets a cheque for £150. The venue for the Originals competition will be the Chameleon Club on Albion Way, with four Sunday heats taking place on the 2, 9, 16 and 23 October at a cost of £3 entry. The final itself will form part of the Horsham town centre festival on Friday, October 28. As ever, the venue for the final will be the Carfax Bandstand and is always an impressive and dramatic show, attended by music lovers from Horsham and beyond, all enjoying local talent. Details of the rules and entry forms, including an online entry form, are available on the HDLMA web site at www.hdlma.co.uk. Hard copies are available directly from QM Studios, Dukes Square, Denne Road, Horsham or from Horsham Music on East Street.

Actor is awarded coveted Summer film school place Joshua Merritt

A young actor from Horsham has been awarded a place on the National Youth Film Academy’s first ever Summer course. Joshua Merritt was one of just 60 people selected to join the scheme from more than 6,000 others who auditioned. Now, the National Youth Film

Academy hopes to raise Joshua’s profile and launch his career in the film world. The unique, not-for-profit organisation was created to find, educate, and develop exceptionally gifted young actors and filmmakers in the UK and is dedicated to giving individuals the best possible opportunity

to succeed in the film industry. The course, which begins this month, aims to train and nurture budding actors and filmmakers, searching for the next Danny Boyle, Helen Mirren and Michael Caine. As part of the Summer scheme, called ‘Make it Happen’, those who attend will have the opportunity to

meet like-minded people and write, film and produce their own short film. Industry professionals will attend a screening of the final film that students produce, giving them an opportunity to showcase their work. To find out more, visit www.nyfa. org.uk or call 0845 309 6239.

Join Glee Club this month Love Glee? Now is your chance to see and hear the high school Glee Club kids singing all the wellknown songs from the TV show, at The Capitol. In an on-stage recreation of the phenomenon, the young performers will be showing off what they’ve learnt, with renditions of songs like River Deep Mountain High, Bridge over Troubled Water, Born this Way and of course, Don’t Stop Believing. This year’s show, Simply More Glee, follows the success of the 2010 production by the similar name, Simply Glee, which was an all-singing, alldancing spectacular. So no matter whether you’ve seen the programme, whether or not you are a true Gleek, and regardless of what gang you were in at school, you can’t fail to move your feet to the sounds of these great pop songs. Simply More Glee will be on stage

Watch The Inbetweeners on the big screen Will and Co are leaving college to cause chaos in Crete as TV show comes of age The TV show about life at a regular sixth-form through the eyes of four teenage guys has become a nationwide craze. Fans of the show can be heard quoting the catchphrases frequently used by Will and his friends Simon, Jay and Neil, as the gang navigates their way through the social minefield of college. Despite many of their peers focusing on university, jobs and

marriage, the boys have their sights set firmly on one thing – girls. Now, the boys are coming of age, and coming to the big screen. E4’s phenomenon, which has been nominated twice for a TV Bafta, has been made into a movie, which sees the friends leave the comfort of college and their parent’s homes in suburbia to go abroad for their first ‘lads holiday’ in Crete.

Starring Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas, the film is sure to be a hit with fans of the show and new audiences, many of whom can relate to what life was like as an 18 year-old. The Capitol is showing previews of the movie on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 August and will be showing for two weeks from Friday, August 19.

Showing on the big screen Super 8

Mr Popper’s Penguins

In a small town in 1979, a group of friends witness a train crash while filming a movie. When strange events begin to occur, they suspect it was not an accident and try to uncover the truth – which is more terrifying than they could imagine. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring newcomers Joel Courtney, Kyle Chandler and Elle Fanning.

When a successful businessman inherits a group of penguins, his skepticism turns soft. While turning his luxury apartment into a winter wonderland as a natural habitat, his professional life begins to unravel. Starring Jim Carrey.

Rise of The Planet of The Apes

Oscar nominee James Franco stars as a scientist in search of a cure for Alzheimer’s. While using apes for research, they break free and a battle between the species ensues in present day San Francisco. Rising talent Frieda Pinto co-stars.

The Smurfs The Smurfs tumble from their own world into ours when they are chased by the evil wizard, Gargamel. Landing smack bang in the middle of Central Park, they must navigate through New York and get back to their own village before it’s too late. An endearingly adorable adventure starring Neil Patrick Harris.

Past & Present

the-resident.co.uk

For a special Past & Present this week, we met a couple who were born, bred and married in Horsham

1951

2011

Marriage milestone for life-long Horsham residents Local couple celebrate 60 years of marriage but believe their legacy of a loving family is their greatest achievement A couple who have lived in Horsham their whole lives are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Olive and Cyril Allingham, who live near Horsham Station, first laid eyes on one another at a dance at The Drill Hall on Denne Road in their early 20s. Their wedding took place at St Mary’s Church at the end of The Causeway and the pair enjoyed a reception with around 30 close friends and family members at the restaurant and café owned by Wakefields in the town centre.

Olive and Cyril say that they still love living in Horsham, where Cyril was a postman for his entire working life, having started as a telegram boy at just 14 years old. Olive, who worked for car dealership Gilbert Rice for 25 years, said: “The town has changed an awful lot. But we don’t mind that. It’s been nice to see it develop and new people and families move here. We can still wander into town so we’re very happy.” Today, the married couple spends time reading, and with family. They have two grown up children, four

grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one of whom was born just a few weeks ago.

You just look after ‘each other ’

Their daughter, Lesley, said: “60 years of marriage is a fantastic achievement. It just doesn’t happen much anymore and is really something to celebrate”.

The family plans to mark the occasion by going out for dinner. Despite the major milestone in their marriage, Olive and Cyril are modest about the achievement, claiming that having a loving family is more important to them. Cyril said: “We’re still a really close family. Even though our son lives further away, we all get together every now and again, which is something we are really proud of, just as much as having been married for 60 years”. Daughter Lesley added: “None of us know what’s around the corner

these days, and my dad hasn’t been well lately, but here we are celebrating a wonderful anniversary. It’s yet another nice memory we can share as a family. And tomorrow, dad gets to meet his second great grandchild for the first time”. Olive and Cyril say they are as happy today as they were when they met. So what’s the secret to a successful, 60-year marriage? “You just look after each other” according to Olive. Happy anniversary from everyone at The Resident!

This route starts with wonderful woods. Cycling through the trees is one of cycling’s greatest pleasures as you escape the hustle and bustle (and traffic) that can come with everyday life. You’ll find some steep hills so the less fit among you might need to choose somewhere else to cycle. On the plus side, steep hills mean plenty of fun racing downhill (if you can make it to the top that it).

Secluded house with an interesting history The Who, one of the biggest UK bands of the 20th century, is rumoured to have stayed at North Heath House near Billingshurst at the height of their heyday. A series of discoveries by current owners Bill and Yelena Walters suggest that the band, including Roger Daltry and Keith Moon, would escape to this country home which was once

owned in the 1970s by the band’s former road manager. When Bill bought the ivy-clad house 24 years ago he found hidden away in the loft various items of memorabilia relating to the band which he gave to charity for auction. In the gardens around the house which extend to around half an acre, Bill and Yelena also came across a

go-kart track buried under the lawns while they were having the garden fenced. Further revelations were to follow as Bill explains: “We knocked down the original garage and realised it had been used as a recording studio at some point in the past and to help with the soundproofing the wall cavities had previously been filled with sand.” In its place Bill installed a large double garage with a garden store, workshop and a large open plan office on the first floor where he ran his own business and which would be ideal as a studio, office or teenage escape. Heading south of Billingshurst on the old roman road, otherwise known as the A29, you would be forgiven for missing North Heath House, tucked away from the road with views over neighbouring fields and farmland. “The first impression of space and light was what caught us when we stepped inside,” says Bill. “There’s a very large hallway with double doors out to onto the patio and rear garden and a uniquely designed wide staircase reaching up onto an open balcony landing giving you a feeling of extra light and space.”

This is a cedarwood house imported from Canada in 1935. There are four bedrooms, two large reception rooms and a modern kitchen which has become the focal point for family life. The attic is boarded from end to end so lends itself to being converted for extra accommodation subject to the required consents. Outside, the very private garden has extensive open lawns and a heated swimming pool, also with a story to tell. “The pool was severely damaged prior to our moving here in 1987,” recalls Bill. “We were told that the damage was caused by a car

being pushed into the pool during a period of late night revelry but unfortunately the crane used to raise the vehicle crushed the side of the pool as it was lifted out. Thankfully that was all repaired long ago and we’ve since had many years of enjoyment from it as my family will testify.” North Heath House is now on the market with Henry Adams, Billingshurst at £595,000. For an appointment to view, please contact Peter Reed at Henry Adams on 01403 782991, billingshurst@henryadams. co.uk or visit their website at www. henryadams.co.uk

Q A

My house hasn’t sold and my current estate agent wants me to reduce the price – what should I do?

The first thing you need to establish is this; has your house not sold or has your estate agent failed to sell it ? There is a huge difference between the two. If you were poorly advised at the outset and your house is overpriced, it would probably be best to choose a more professional company to deal with your sale who will give you the correct advice to ensure that you do sell; and for the best price. If your current agent tried a bullish price on your behalf first however, then you should heed their advice and re-price accordingly. This is far better than simply languishing on the market at the wrong price for ages. The second issue may be that your house is correctly priced but your current estate agent is lacking in their service to you. In other words, they are either not advertising & promoting your house enough, have produced shoddy & poorly-presented details, lack a conspicuous, well-positioned high street office location or have simply ‘given-up’ and moved on to concentrate on more recent instructions leaving your house to stagnate on the market. There is always a danger over the summer for some estate agents to blame the holiday period on the lack of interest in a property or as a reason for reducing the price. Whilst it is obviously true that there are fewer buyers around in August because simple mathematics dictates that a proportion will be away on holiday at any given time, it is also true in our experience that the quality of those looking during the summer months is significantly higher. Therefore if you are under no pressure to sell quickly I would advise that you seriously consider using an alternative company that will have the time and energy to commit to ensuring your property achieves maximum promotion and attention during what is proving to be a busy time. At the very least, you will then be perfectly placed to take full advantage of the September market. So to quote the excitable Corporal Jones, my advice is ‘don’t panic’ by reducing your price unnecessarily, potentially costing you thousands of pounds, without consulting more reputable estate agents in your area. If you would like advice on selling your property please call me on 01403 264962, pop into our office at 34 South Street, Horsham or email me at ‘rossattwood@harperjames.co.uk’. Q A

How long could you maintain your household bills and your lifestyle if your income stopped?

With fuel prices on the increase, gas and electric bills going up and many retail products more expensive now than they were a year ago, people are feeling the purse strings being tightened. When you add in the fact that many people have seen little or no pay rises since 2007, many households are having to prioritise where they spend there money. It is worth spending the time, listing what are the essential bills and what is a luxury. How many people pay for the latest mobile phone, the full sky package and even insure their pets, before protecting their income! There are many ways that you can protect your income and make sure your loved ones are financially sound if your income was to cease. Death - In the event of your death, you can take out a life insurance policy to produce a lump sum of money, or derive an income for many years to come. Your family could use this to pay off a mortgage and have an extra amount to pay the household bills.

Serious Illness - In the event of you being diagnosed with a critical illness, again you can take out a protection policy to produce a lump sum of money. You could use this to pay for the best medical care, clear your debts or pay off your mortgage. Either way, it would take off the pressure of having to return to work as soon as possible, increasing your recovery time.

Redundancy - In these uncertain times, how many people can claim that their job is 100% safe? Should you be made redundant, how confident would you be to secure alternative work before your money rang out? Redundancy cover would give you a monthly income for a period of time, until you can find the right job for you.

These are many other ways of making sure that your families lifestyles will not be affected should your income stop, whether that would be short term or forever. If you are more likely to insure your television, than your own life then please spend time focusing on what is really important! To find out more about this, please contact me on 01403 268562. Alternatively if you would like to ask a question, please e-mail info@mercierallen.co.uk. Q A

We own a house in Horsham and rather than move, we are looking to undertake improvements and alterations. We don’t know where to start, can you help?

RICS research has looked at a changing trend in the property market. Increasing numbers of homeowners like yourself are deciding to improve rather than move home, according to new research from RICS. The slow sales market is prompting people to improve their properties rather than move, also buyers are facing high property prices when trading up, which are also prompting them to stay in their homes. For those undertaking work to their homes, surveyors reported an additional room or bedroom were the improvement which added the most value. Traditional improvements such as adding a new bathroom or kitchen were the next most valuable. Adding a conservatory, or reinstating period features were seen as desirable optional extras but not ones which add value. Surveyors also noted that costs incurred for improvements will not always be covered by the potential increase in a property’s value, as this also depends on the quality of work and other features of the property, such as its style and location. There is no doubt external factors were most likely to detract from a property’s price. A property’s proximity to a noisy road or a railway decreases value, while known subsidence was seen as the next most likely to affect value. I would homeowners on how to get the most out of property improvements: • Don’t be tempted to over value an improvement and expect high instant returns irrespective of market conditions • If extending, make sure that the accommodation provided (i.e. property size) is balanced with the size of the plot; bigger is not always better • When undertaking a loft extension or basement conversion try to keep the style of the new rooms in sympathy with the style of the rest of the property. A modern extension on a traditional property may look odd and lose appeal • If you are trying to sell, bear in mind most areas have a ceiling price, i.e., a maximum sale price you can expect to achieve. Improving a poor property in a good location is better than improving a good property in a poor location • Don’t bite off more than you can chew - stick to a budget and ask the experts for advice.

Most properties provide some potential for expansion and improvement, but I would advise people to think about how much they are investing and their key motivator before undertaking major projects. It is important to think about the style and age of the property before undertaking any works - remember, what appeals to some people may not appeal to others. Costly disappointments can be avoided by prior planning and research. I would advise that whatever you decide to do with your home you should seek professional advice and ensure all works are carried out by qualified contractors.” Please contact duncanjagger@harper-james.co.uk if you have any property related queries.

Dressing for 2011 Now the 21st century is well and truly upon us, Mapp & Company Estate Agents have decided to ditch the traditional lounge suit in favour of new company branded polo shirts and Chinos. Director Chris Skelton states. “Buyers are almost always dressed in casual wear when we meet them. Suits are designed to look aggressive, dominant and superior. Is this the subliminal message we should be giving off to buyers?” Our job takes us out into houses and gardens in all weathers. Dogs can jump up to greet us, we measure a garage or garden where the suit is not practical. In the hot weather the air conditioning is blasting away just so we can look old fashioned and conventional. The irony is that lounge suits

similar to those worn today were originally very contentious when people first started wearing them. Socialist MP and Union Leader Keir Hardie caused outrage in 1892 when he arrived in Parliament sporting a lounge suit when everyone else was wearing the traditional Victorian frock coat. In the 1920s they gained popularity with the young playboy sect. The Duke of Windsor was the most famous proponent. After a hundred years men’s daily fashion should move on. Many other businesses and professions already dress for the modern work environment and Mapp & Company think estate agency needs to get with the times and bring the relationship with customers onto a more one to one basis.

Fixed rates hit all time low levels Clive Hancocks from Mortgage Solutions Limited comments on the latest Bank of England base rate decision. A poll conducted by the BBC found that a majority of leading economists no longer envisage a base rate rise until next year. Of the 32 forecasters, who are also regularly polled by the Treasury, 26 predicted that rates would not rise this year, and three predicted there would be no rate increase until 2013. In light of this no-one was surprised that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to retain the bank base rate at 0.5% for the 29th consecutive month. Although the US Senate finally agreed to raise the debt ceiling and the Eurozone countries recently agreed further bailouts for Greece and a restructuring of debts for Portugal and Ireland, markets still fear

that sovereign debt defaults are likely. Mortgage lenders in the UK continue to offer exceptional mortgage products relative to historic rates with Moneyfacts reporting that 2 and 5 year average fixed rates have fallen further in August having hit all time low levels in July. Average mortgage rates for 2 and 5 year fixed rates fell back further this month from July falling back by 0.09% and 0.13% respectively and now stand at 4.27% and 5.03%. Average two year tracker rates dropped significantly in August having risen in July and now stand at 3.27% a fall of 0.23% from the previous month. Lenders have broadly maintained their overall appetite to lend during July with mortgage product numbers averaging approximately 7,250 deals, a slight decrease on June but as we are now in peak holiday season, activity levels do historically level out

somewhat during the summer holiday period though. Product choice and product pricing for borrowers both new and existing remains very healthy relative to the same period last year and significantly improved on this time two years ago. Clive Hancocks is a Director of Mortgage Solutions Limited. For further information on how the latest base rate decision affects you, please call 01403 241414. Or call in at our office at 13 West Street, Horsham, RH12 1PB. Or visit our website www. mortgagesolutionsltd.co.uk

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. A fee of up to £95 may be charged for arranging your mortgage. An additional fee of up to £295 may be charged on completion, the amount will depend on your individual circumstances.

Are you being overcharged? We think so! “The lettings market is still currently on a high, and the Horsham market in particular is suffering from a lack of landlord clients,” says Elaine Gray, the Partner responsible for Lettings at Munslow Bailey Gray. “There are multiple tenants for each property, and this is allowing Landlords to achieve higher rentals. As well as a better return from their investment, they now also have the ability to pick and choose from the best tenants. Unfortunately, some agents see this as a way of being greedy and raising both obvious and hidden fees.” She went on to comment that “If there was ever a good time for a firsttime Landlord to come in to the market, it is now, and at Munslow Bailey Gray, we have kept our overheads low and passed these low costs on in the form of lower fees, but with 100% commitment to service. “We can help and advise you on the whole process from preparing your property for rental, through the minefield of rules and regulations, to actually moving a tenant in and then managing the let for you. We are transparent on all our charges and to encourage Landlords to come in to the market, we are offering them the first 3 months of a 6 month let FREE with following on fees at only 7.5%*pcm fully managed.” For no-obligation details of how we can help both landlords and tenants through a smooth transaction, please contact Munslow Bailey Gray on 01403 267530 or e-mail Elaine on elaine@mbgproperties.com * subject to terms

THE FIRST CHOICE FOR LETTINGS We know that our landlords are all different, some have chosen to invest in property, others have become accidental landlords as an alternative to selling or through inheritance or circumstance. Why do Landlords choose Leaders? Being the top choice for tenants is just one of the reasons that so many landlords choose to let through Leaders.Since we were established in 1983 by Neville Lee, the co-founding member of the Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA), we have remained 100% dedicated to lettings. Our extensive industry knowledge ensures you are kept informed and compliant with constantly changing legislation. Each of our branches has the back-up of a large company with streamlined accounting processes and user-friendly computer systems. Unlike many big companies we have retained in-house property management teams, meaning that your property is being looked after by a ‘local’ who not only knows the area but really knows your property.

What makes a good letting agent? A good agent will help you get the most out of your investment, while you rest easy, knowing that everything is being reliably looked after on your behalf. Base your decision on experience, reputation, professionalism and overall quality of service. You could be letting your property for a number of years, so choose an agent with years of success. Vauxhall Astra GTC: Far more than just a 3 door Astra Olli Nott Motors Reporter

olli@the-resident.co.uk

Vauxhall’s mid-size coupe challenger caused a stir when it became available to order in June. With a starting price of just £18,495 and dramatic styling from a design team led by Brit, Mark Adams, the GTC is set to wow UK customers and rock the established front runners in its class – the Volkswagen Scirocco and the Renault Megané Coupe. But the GTC’s appeal runs far deeper than its rakish lines. Unlike many three-door versions of existing compact hatches, the GTC – like the Astra Sports Hatch before it – will be a standalone model in Vauxhall’s range, conceived to resonate with a more driver- oriented customer base who value the way a car handles and performs as much as the way it looks. To do this, engineers from both Vauxhall Engineering Centre at Millbrook and Opel in Rüsselsheim have developed a bespoke platform for the GTC. Key components – such as the HiPerStruts used on the front axle – have been derived from the 325PS Insignia VXR, while significant upgrades have been made to the GTC’s unique Watt’s link/compound crank rear end. So while the GTC line-up currently includes a broad range of engines producing from 120 to 180PS, drivers can always be assured of classleading levels of dynamic control. But the best chassis can only be honed through intense testing on the

most demanding surfaces. Britain will be by far the biggest market for the GTC, which is why Vauxhall and Opel engineers have conducted much of their evaluation on UK roads, with their unique (and some may say diabolical) blend of undulations, cambers, rough surfaces, blind apexes and crests. The theory is this: if the GTC can work well in the UK, it will work much more effectively on other markets’ roads, too.

British roads: the ultimate challenge for dynamics! Vauxhall and Opel engineers are making increasing use of British roads as a key part of their overall chassis development programmes. In the last three years, the Insignia, Astra, Astra Sports Tourer, Meriva, and now the Astra GTC, have all benefited from the UK’s unique mix of road surfaces. So what makes our roads so bad, but so good for chassis engineers? “Our road system is like no other in Europe,” said Gerry Baker. “We obviously test cars in many different countries, but the UK’s severely undulating and heavily cambered roads often reveal handling traits that would otherwise be hidden on smoother surfaced and more predictable continental roads. “It’s not just the surfaces, either. Corners with changing radii are commonplace in the UK, as are blind apexes and crests, which mean that extra demands are put upon our cars and drivers. “A good example is a driver who has to make a mid-corner adjustment on an unfamiliar road where the

bend tightens unexpectedly and he throttles-off or brakes suddenly. “The car needs to work with him, and respond intuitively to steering inputs, but it still needs to be rewarding to drive under normal conditions.” Recognising that British drivers don’t always have access to winding, smooth-surfaced roads, the GTC has also been tuned to deal with the worst rutted and broken surfaces,

even when equipped with its optional 19- and 20-inch wheels, or on the standard 18- inch. The Vauxhall family is growing, and this new addition is a proper driver’s car. The VXR GTC will be something to be cautious of, as it will most likely end up being a shouty and brash car,

but for now the SRI trim with the 1.4 16v VVT 140 Turbo will do me fine! 20- inch wheels and bright yellow paint please. For more information head over to Stevens Vauxhall in Broadbridge Heath – if the normal Astra looks good, by default the GTC will look fantastic in the metal.

Horsham still top after derby win Martin Read Cricket

Horsham increased their lead at the top of the Sussex Premier League with a clinical away win over Roffey. The home side chose to bat and got off to a steady start, but 90-1 flattered to deceive and following the loss of two quick wickets they became bogged down. Four batsmen were dismissed when well set and the innings

progressed slowly to a total 50 or 60 short of what was required. With injured Owain Jones rested at the request of the county, Matt Henry banned from bowling by his home club in New Zealand because of a continuing back problem and Devon Endersby also unable to bowl, Horsham again had to rely on their leg spinning duo – Will Beer and Michael Munday. These top exponents of their craft imposed their familiarly tight grip, operating in tandem. Together they bowled 36 of the 58 overs, Beer

Horsham won by seven wickets taking 3-55 off 20 with six maidens and Munday 3-50. Chris Webb top scored for Roffey with 45. Matt Davies (38), Mike Norris (36) and Chris Plaister (29) were the other principal contributors. Barring a Horsham batting aberration it was unlikely they would be seriously inconvenienced on Roffey’s high-scoring ground and this proved to be the case. Opener James Johnson (52) and Beer (29) paved the way for Endersby (81 not out) to blast Horsham home. He started cautiously but finished the game in the grand manner with three consecutive towering sixes off the normally frugal Luke Barnard. The wickets were shared between Dan Smith, Stuart Whittingham and Andy McGorian. This was Roffey’s first home defeat in the league, Horsham being the only side to complete home and away victories over their near neighbour. Roffey are a creditable sixth in the league, but skipper Mike Norris admitted: “We didn’t bat well enough – 30s and 40s are not adequate to post a challenging total. “Although we bowled reasonably well, we didn’t have sufficient runs to put Horsham under pressure.” Horsham skipper Craig Gallagher said: “We’re on a roll and it’s great to see our young side doing well, especially when we are struggling with injuries. “We took control of the game and that ensured victory. Hopefully our free week during the Horsham Festival will enable key players to recover for our push for the league title.” Needing one more win to stay clear of the danger zone, Roffey tomorrow (Saturday) host strugglers Three Bridges, for whom Monty Panesar scored 66 last week, batting at three in a home defeat. Horsham are 20 points ahead of Preston Nomads and 32 above Hastings, both of whom have a game in hand. These two sides play Horsham at Cricketfield Road in the final two matches of the season. Pulborough are bottom of the table after being shot out for 68 in a fivewicket defeat by East Grinstead, despite Amit Suman’s 4-22.

Tom Haynes produced the performance of the week to help Barns Green U14 to victory against Ansty U14 in the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival. The Sussex youngster followed up his 3-24 with an unbeaten 97 as Green (179-4) romped home by six wickets. Isaac Dibsdall took 3-17 and Alex Hammond 2-19. Despite Hugo Cowan’s 31, Haynes’ 24 and James Powell’s 21 not out, Green lost by six wickets against Chichester U14 (117-4). Haynes scored 25, Cowan hit 22 and Hammond took 2-35 as Green (140-9) held on for a losing draw against Cuckfield U14 (282-4).

Green’s derby against Horsham U14 was abandoned due to heavy rain. Will Collar took 3-10 and scored 23 not out as Horsham (97-2) strolled to an eight-wicket win at Ansty U14. Jonny Newland hit 25 and Tom Haines 25. With the temperature hitting 30°C, Alex Glossop held Horsham’s innings together with 24 not out as they closed on 90-7 for a losing draw against Chichester U14 (223-5). Horsham started well against Cuckfield U14, thanks to a brilliant catch by Jonny Newland. But there were few smiles from there on in as Cuckfield hit fours here, there and everywhere to reach 234-5 in 35 overs, despite Matthew Brock’s 2-35. Opener Haines hit a very good 66, but Horsham collapsed to 120 all out in reply.

On Saturday, April 26, 1997, Brighton and Hove Albion played their final match at the Goldstone Ground and secured three vital points with victory over Doncaster Rovers. Last Saturday saw the circle completed when Rovers were again defeated, this time at the fabulous American Express Community Stadium. Saturday was the most excited I have ever been before a match. More than the Newcastle game that saw us go up to the old Division 1 in 1979, more than the 1983 FA Cup final or the replay, more than for any game I can remember. I was like a cat on a hot tin roof. When I set off to join the NWSS coach at Cowfold, my wife was probably pleased to see the back of me. Before I knew it, we were in the coach park at The Amex for the first league match there. I left the coach and before long had lost our neighbours’ teenage son, on his first trip to The Amex, or he had lost me? A quick phone call and I found him at the end of the queue for the club shop. That’s where I left him because I wanted to get in the ground. I quickly made my way to the bar to purchase a couple of beers and on cue my mate appeared. I’m not sure who had the bigger smile. We spent the next hour chatting with different people, then it was time to go to our seats. As we walked out, we were hit by the noise as 14 years of emotion were released. When Sussex by the Sea was blasted out and the players walked onto the pitch, I finally cracked. My bottom lip started trembling and my eyes welled up. Will Buckley’s late double gave Albion a dramatic win as about 20,000 Albion fans shouted themselves hoarse. There was still time for one last bit of celebrating as Fatboy Slim’s Celebrate You, Baby rang out from the speakers. I mentioned that the circle had been closed, but maybe it was just a tiny bit ajar. Tuesday night’s Carling Cup tie firmly bridged that gap as Gillingham was where Albion played their ‘home’ games for two seasons. The match and the occasion were never going to live up to the previous Saturday, but again the fans turned out in force. Like me, I’m sure many were eager to relive the experience, this time under lights. And enjoy we did. Two games, two wins and a penalty scored! Not a bad start to the season and a new home.

Sussex enjoyed a good first day at the Horsham Festival and built on that early on day two, despite behind held up by rain. The home side won the toss and invited Worcestershire to bat first on a sunny day in front of a packed crowd. It looked a fine decision when, in his first over, James Anyon had Matthew Pardoe caught behind by Ben Brown. Anyon continued to steam in from the Church End and took the prize wicket of Vikram Solanki, bowling

him to leave Worcestershire 6-2. At this point, Moeen Ali came to the wicket and he put on 139 with opener Daryl Mitchell as the visitors looked to post a large first innings total. They were looking comfortable until Monty Panesar removed both batsmen in quick succession. Mitchell (66) was trapped LBW and Ali (71) caught behind by Brown. Only days after turning 18, firstclass debutant Aneesh Kapil joined Alex Kevezee and they put on 88. Again, both looked in control, but an inspired chase and throw by Joe Gatting saw Kervezee (49) run out going for a third run.

Sussex began to take control when Kapil (54) was caught by Will Adkin off the bowling of Kirk Wernars and Gareth Andrew quickly followed, brilliantly caught by Michael Yardy off Panesar (3-75).

Anyon returned with the new ball and ripped one of Ben Scott’s stumps

out of the ground to leave Worcestershire 273-8. Overseas bowler Wayne Parnell got a deserved wicket when Saeed Ajmal was caught behind and the excellent Anyon (4-71) finished the job by bowling Alan Richardson. Worcestershire ended on 290, leaving Sussex to face a tricky sixover spell in the evening session. But openers Ed Joyce and Joe Gatting, who was replacing Chris Nash at the top of the order, survived as Sussex closed day one on 16-0. Rain delayed the start of day two, but it soon cleared and Sussex made a good start. Both Gatting and Joyce played

some glorious straight drives as Sussex passed 50 for the loss of no wicket in the 16th over. It took a sensational catch from wicketkeeper Ben Scott, off the bowling of Andrew, to get rid of Joyce (27). Luke Wells was bowled by Richardson for a duck before the rain returned and Sussex went into an early lunch on 66-2. The County Championship match is due to end tomorrow (Saturday) and the two sides will meet again on Sunday in the Clydesdale Bank 40over competition. Latest: Worcestershire 290, Sussex 241-6 (Gatting 61, Wernars 47*).

Sport in Brief Football Horsham YMCA will start their Sussex County League season at home to Rye United tomorrow (Saturday), writes Tom Norris. With two managers and 80 different players entering and leaving the club in just nine months, it was no surprise that YM were relegated from the Ryman League by early April. But new manager Sammy Donnelly has transformed the squad. Signings include ex-Brighton forward Simon Funnell, former Conference man Justin Gregory and a quintet from Donnelly’s former club Three Bridges. A 0-0 draw at Mile Oak and a 2-1 loss to Southwick were unconvincing friendly results, but an encouraging performance in a narrow defeat to Horsham restored some faith among YM fans. Donnelly said: “Other than the Horsham game, which I considered to be a good pre-season friendly, the others haven’t quite turned out as I’d have hoped. “We ought to be playing teams from higher divisions, like the Horshams, to try to get the best out of us. “We’ve got a quality bunch of players, but they’re a group of individuals who need to gel together. It’s going to take a little time, but I hope to see that change sooner rather than later.” YM U18 will begin their Ryman Youth League campaign at Eastbourne Town on August 22.

Kieran Vernon recorded his first top10 finish in only his third race in the Porsche Carrera Cup. The 21-year-old BRDC Rising Star from West Chiltington finished ninth and 11th at Snetterton, Norfolk, after twice qualifying 11th. Tim Harvey, the 2010 champion who gave up his drive to Vernon part way through this season, said: “Kieran is making rapid progress. In any other year he would already be challenging for podiums, but such is the strength in depth this year that there are potentially 12-14 race winners at every meeting. “Nevertheless if Kieran continues this progression, a podium will soon be a realistic target.”

Bowls Pulborough won 98-61 at Horsham, whose captain Mike Power admitted: “We just couldn’t compete on the day.” Other results: Horsham 76 Henfield 72, Horsham 49 Bramley 78, Horsham 96 Henfield 121, Horsham 81 Newick 54, Horsham 77 Storrington 105, Horsham 103 Popes Mead 53. Martin Joliffe nudged ahead of Gwyneth Main to claim the club’s 3-21 title.
