Victims lost life savings a bankrupt horsham man faces jail for claiming £14million from investors in a fraudulent operation.

Terence Freeman, 62, of Kings Place, Kings Road, convinced about 700 people to hand over savings to the ‘Ponzi’ scheme, although many have not reported their losses to the police.

This week, Southwark Crown Court heard how Freeman bought himself holiday homes in Cyprus and France, an executive box at the Tottenham Hotspur football ground and bought a £120,000 diamond ring for his new Russian bride, 30-year-old Yegana.

Victims were shown paperwork detailing threefold returns and were wrongly told he was registered with the regulator the Financial Services Authority.

In reality he was a failed businessman who had been jailed in 1997 for fraud, Southwark Crown Court heard.

Freeman's defence barrister David Stern claimed the fatherof-three was simply “burying his head in the sand” when his dealings went “spectacularly wrong”.

But victims who were in court

for the hearing described Freeman as a “terrible fraud” and a “liar and a swine”.

The biggest losers were a couple who lost £1.4m and their family home, while top footballers and the ex-wife of Collin Montgomerie, Eimera, also lost money.

Peter Beeson, from Essex, poured in £600,000 and has since jointly formed an action group representing the hundreds of victims.

Mr Beeson said: “It’s taken me 20 years to get where I am and that piece of **** knocked me back down in the space of two years.”

On Wednesday, Freeman admitted a string of charges relating to fraud while a director of GFX Capital Ltd, which was set up in 2004 but collapsed with losses of an estimated £44million.

Adjourning for a pre-sentence report, Judge Geoffrey Rivlin QC said: “These are people who are putting good money into this business and they are being conned into doing it.

“He has been in trouble be-

fore, a very long time ago. He was imprisoned for fraud.

“I don’t wish to raise his hopes that any point in the probation report may affect the sentence. Custody is the most likely sentence.”

Freeman admitted fraudulent trading, acting as a director of a company when an undischarged bankrupt, two counts of engaging in a business under a name other than that in which he was adjudged bankrupt, and two charges of acting in contravention of a disqualification order, between December 31st 2005 and July 14 2010.

Back in 1997 Freeman was jailed for four-and-a-half years and disqualified as a director for 15 years after being found guilty of eight offences relating to bankruptcy and being a disqualified director.

Leaving prison in 2000 he changed his name from Terence Sparks to Terry Freeman and established his new financial operation.

Old faces at book launch

Adam Hammond’s new book about Horsham Football Club’s seasons in the Metropolitan League from 1951-57 was launched at the weekend.

Before Saturday’s brilliant win against Sutton United, fifteen players from that era turned up to celebrate the book launch.

It is the second book about the

club by Adam, who is the club committee chairman at Horsham.

Ellie’s kind gift Stone (Marketing Manager of Brock Taylor) then went to the Hospice to meet with the children and to give the games consoles and games to the children.

Brock Taylor owner Peter Maskell arranged the competition as part of the civic reopening of East Street, arranged after the roads had been re-laid as part of the regeneration of The Quarter area.

The competition involved 23 traders, from a range from restaurants including Cote, Strada and Wabi to furniture shops La Source, hairdressers and independent shops.

Peter devised a two part puzzle to be solved - first a list of all competing businesses was published in The Resident local paper with a cryptic clue associated to each, then participants had to collect a sheet of stickers - printed with 23 different icons from the office.

Once you solved the clue you went to business and matched the sticker with an icon hidden in their front window.

Chestnut Tree House is the only children's hospice in Sussex and cares for children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive lifelimiting and life-threatening illnesses.

Everyone seems to have the lurgy at the moment.

It’s sweeping through our schools and our workplaces and quite frankly if you haven’t had a cough, cold, headache, sickness or diarrhoea in the last week or so you must have been living in an isolated padded cell.

And all this sickness has only increased our general dislike of gloomy old January, which ‘scientists’ claim will reach its nadir on 24th January.

Health professionals are asking anyone who has vomiting and diarrhoea not to visit relatives or friends in hospital or a care home, and to stay at home until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped.

Local services affected already this winter Vomiting and diarrhoea are symptoms of the ‘winter vomiting bug’ norovirus which cases serious disruption in hospitals at this time of year.

So far this winter of all the major hospitals that treat people from West Sussex have been affected by norovirus, and they are urging everyone to listen to their

Julia Dutchman-Bailey, Chief Nurse at NHS West Sussex, said: “Remembering not to come into hospital as a visitor if you’ve been ill can help stop winter bugs, such as norovirus, from taking hold.

“Norovirus is a particularly nasty bug which can easily create huge problems for our hospitals trying to cope with ill patients as well as for people who catch it.

“Each of us can do our bit to stop the spread of the virus, by observing the basic rules of good hygiene. This helped to reduce the impact of pandemic flu last year and will do the same for norovirus.”

Nationally NHS Direct is handling more than 4,000 calls a week from people across the country suffering from suspected norovirus.

there’s been a 40% drop in violent crimes in the horsham district, new figures reveal.

With Horsham obviously never reaching quite the level of violence experienced in, say, Bogota in Columbia or Ciudad Juarez in Mexico, the drop in cases isn’t massive in real terms.

But it means that there was, nonetheless 116 victims across the district in the last 12 months.

These encouraging statistics, which demonstrate that the Horsham District has had the biggest reduction in all injury violence crimes in the Sussex Police force area, can be attributed to many factors, including the work of Horsham District Community Safety Partnership.

The partnership has been working on many initiatives to reduce all injury violence crimes which it considers to be a priority crime type.

Examples of this work include the public space CCTV network and the Pubwatch

Scheme which aim to reduce violence in public places.

The partnership has also been working hard to help victims of domestic violence by raising awareness of the help and support available such as the valuable drop in centres and helplines.

As well as the ongoing educational work undertaken

by Sussex Police, staffing levels have increased in the special constabulary membership, which has in turn enabled more staff to be out on the beat, providing more visible policing.

There have also been a number of multi-agency

gran-wich mean time two 66 year old grandmothers and identical twin sisters are to undertake a unique long-distance walk in an attempt to raise £10,000 for research into chronic diseases.

Christine Dafter, from Matfield, Kent, and her sister Hazel Green from West Chiltington, are to walk approximately 300 miles following the Greenwich Meridian Line from Peacehaven, East Sussex, to Sand le Mere, on the coast, east of Hull.

It is believed that this will be the first charity walk along this newly created long-distance trekking route.

The walk starts on Sunday, 1st May 2011 at Peacehaven Meridian Marker at 10.30am and finishes on Monday 30th May 2011.

Money raised from the walk will go directly to the Department of Twin Research (DTR), part of King’s College London, at St.

Thomas’ Hospital in London via the charity - The Chronic Disease Research Foundation.

The DTR use both identical and non-identical twins to identify genetic and lifestyle influences on common illnesses and life threatening diseases.

It is hoped that a number of twins associated with DTR research projects will join Christine and Hazel for parts

refuse service has bin great! we’ve given the acorn scheme a bit of a bashing on the odd occasion that a lorry has given a park car a bit of a bashing.

And we threw in our tuppence worth when the recycling scheme was discovered to be a major factor in the council’s overspending.

So to balance it out, we should recognise that those involved in the scheme have weathered the storm with a praise-worthy performance during the snow-affected festive period.

Whilst both the recent severe weather along with the extended holiday period have delayed collections in other parts of the country, nearly all Acorn Plus household refuse and recycling collections have been carried out without significant delays.

During the severe weather, Horsham District Council stopped collections for safety reasons but caught up with them within a week or so. And during the Christmas and New Year period it put on extra blue top bin collections across the 205 square miles of the district.

Now, almost all 56,000 district

homes are fully up to date with their collections.

Amongst the positive comments received from the public received by the Council is the letter below: "Whilst watching the news the past 2 days we note the problems over the country where rubbish has not been collected for up to a month and send up a little prayer that we live in Horsham!

on the wallet over Christmas, many find that it makes good financial sense to turn those unwanted and unused pieces of jewellery into hard cash. And for many it does, simply post your unwanted gold items away in an envelope, sit back, and wait for the cheque to fall through the lette box. It all appears too good to be true.

Unfortunately, across the country, Trading Standards officers are investigating a legion of complaints, confirming that these offers are exactly that.

A Trading Standards spokeswoman explained: ‘The problem with any company of this nature is that once you send your jewellery off to them, you lose control over it. There is no way of knowing before you part with it whether or not you are dealing with a legitimate firm.” While no one is expecting to be paid the full market price for their scrap, some companies are offering as little as 9%of that figure!

Items to be sold are posted through the mail in good faith to the firm by Special Delivery. Having received the Gold, the company weighs it and assesses its purity based on carats. Based on that, a cheque is sent back to the vendor for the sum the firm is offering. The vendor is supposed to be able to reject the offer and request the gold back within a 7 day period, but as Trading Standards discovered, that is not always as easy as it sounds.

Contacting these firms can be at best challenging and locating the whereabouts of one’s items even more so.

Local jeweller Dominic Sakakini has first hand knowledge of the pitfalls that some of his customers have faced, having heard an increasing number of horror stories from customers who’ve fallen victim to this 21st Century gold rush. “We had a customer who had sent her items away, only to be made an insulting offer for them. Having then rejected the offer, she asked for the items to be returned. “However, after a great deal of phone calls and chasing up, she discovered that her ‘envelope had been lost’. The company then informed her that she was covered under the postal insurance. What they weren’t so keen to highlight was that the insurance limit was only £40!

“Another made lots of attempts to get through to a different company by email and phone, and when they did eventually manage to speak to someone and ask for the earrings back, she was told it was too late, that the seven day return period had passed and that they had been melted down. “At this stage the offer was increased by 400% on the original, but still far less than the items were worth,” Dominic explained. “The difficulty comes as people are not always able to walk away from a bad deal.”

Sakakini Jewellers, based in the Carfax, also offer cash for gold, only with a few major differences.

Sakakini’s offer a fair price to customers for their items. “If people own items they want to trade in for cash, not only will we deal with them face to face, we will give them a decision on the day there and then. We will pay customers a fair price, without a wait or delay, and they can leave the shop with cash in their hands. “What’s more, if they feel that the offer does not match the amount they are looking for, then they can leave with their items under no obligation or pressure,” said Dominic.

“One recent customer was offered £30 by a TV firm for his bracelet.

We offered him £190.” “We also run Gold Parties and will pay the host 10% of what we pay out on the day.

And we only ask for a minimum number of people with items to sell of three.”

The £125,000 West Sussex County Council scheme will also involve replacing bridge joints across the width of the road, plus associated re-waterproofing of the bridge deck and safety barrier improvements.

oted scholar, author and President of the UNESCO Association for Interfaith Dialogue Jaume de Marcos will visit Horsham to give a presentation on the subject of Michael Servetus.

Servetus (above) was a 16th century Spanish theologian, physician, cartographer, and humanist whose universalist writings resulted in his execution by the Calvinists of Geneva.

Mr de Marcos has written several books on the life and works of Michael Servetus and the presentation and will be made at Horsham Unitarian church on Sunday, 16th January at 10.30am.

A Chinese truck driver cheated death after his vehicle lost control on a bridge, flipped over the edge and ended up dangling over a 330ft drop.

Horsham District residents aged 50 and over are being encouraged to contribute to the Senior Persons’ Council.

A new programme of meetings for 2011 has been planned for the Senior Persons’ Council and any qualifying residents who wish to contribute are being encouraged to attend.

The Senior Persons’ Council was started by Horsham District Council in 2006 to give older people in the Horsham District the opportunity to present their views on local issues and undertake their own initiatives.

Knight to remember at Camelot carnage Barns Green Players are hard at work preparing for this year’s production of King Arthur.

The show is a comedy based at Camelot, a hilarious world of magical adventure – an Arthurian tale with a twist featuring King Arthur himself, Queen Guinevere, Lancelot and a host of baddies determined to replace Arthur as King.

Rehearsals for the play have been going on the Village Hall every Tuesday and Wednesday night for several weeks now and the cast have been learning their lines, songs and dance routines.

However, it is not just the cast who have been busy. Behind the scenes different teams have been working hard to produce the best costumes, props, scenery, sound, lighting and special effects.

The costume team have to produce medieval dress for all 30 members of the cast as well as working with the technical team to develop all the

amazing special effects including a giant fire breathing Dragon.

The scenery has also been specially designed for the production and once building of it is complete, the painting teams will move in to finish the job.

It all adds up to a spectacular show full of colour, jokes, slapstick and great entertainment for children as well as adults.

There are just 6 shows over two week-ends in January and tickets are on sale now. There is one show on Fri 14th and one on Fri 21st at 7.30pm, and two shows on Sat 15th and Sat 22nd at 2pm and 7.30pm. There is a bar at the venue open before the start of the show and at half time as well as a prize raffle and plenty of other surprises.

Tickets are just £8 If you haven’t been to one of the Barns Green Players’ productions in the Village Hall it would be well worth coming along to see King Arthur.

Floody nightmare During the summer, the Forum in Horsham is one of the most pleasant places to walk in town.

The power supply was cut as two fire engines from Horsham fire station attended the scene

and used fans to disperse the smoke from the basement and access to the car park was sealed off during this process.

Forum resident Julia Martin said on Tuesday: “Electrical power has still not been resumed to the East wing of the Forum and in it very cold in the apartments with people having to eat out and use candles to light their homes.

“We have been told by the electrical companies that the power should be resumed by Thursday morning at the latest but with elderly residents and young families in the block, this is far from satisfactory and is just another sorry chapter in the Piazza disaster.”

Horsham Born... & Bread!

Local Horsham lads Dan Breden and Joby Hardman have joined forces with The Sussex Business Partnership to create a business to support Sussex based diners and restaurateurs’. eatsaver.com is a website that will offer local independent pubs, restaurants & take aways the opportunity to showcase their businesses and any offers or events they are planning. Equally diners will be able to look at everything Horsham and the surrounding areas have to offer and make informed choices about the type and value of food they want.

The site, eatsaver.com, will build into more than just a traditional “offer” site and will develop into a one stop

food forum to enable people to place reviews, ideas and to debate food and dining issues.

It will also act as a vehicle through which restaurateurs’ and landlords can sound out ideas and gain feedback.

So why did they do this?

Joby Hardman said “Over the past 12 months we have noted, as fellow users of other discount websites, the areas that we feel they could improve on or the users could find useful.”

The guys quickly developed their idea into a reality to be part of a rapidly growing industry.

After months of planning and getting the right team of people together they pitched their idea to local Business Angel Tim Breden (or Dad as Dan likes to call him) and they secured the investment needed from the Sussex Business Partnership to create their vision and a website worthy of delivering it.

I asked Tim Breden, previously the Operations Director at Kate’s Cakes and now an investor in many Sussex based businesses, what did this proposition have in it that attracted him?

He is clearly no pushover so why this idea and why now?

“It’s a great improvement of a tested business model

and it’s designed to help small businesses. Dan and Joby are very focused on the need to provide a complete service and have the drive and determination to do just that. I don’t make sentimental investments and truly believe these guys can and will deliver a first class site which will help and support local pubs and restaurants”.

Their research demonstrated that it was hard to get a definitive guide of where there is to eat in a given town; so the first aim was to have one site that will give all this information.

Secondly, they noticed that the competition mainly focused on the big chains.

Coming from an independent business background they wanted to make sure that they worked closely with all the independents; offering great service whilst providing complete customer choice.

They had a desire to tailor their site to the independent making it as interactive and usual for them as possible.

They have also taken the brave step of not just delivering discount vouchers, traditionally used to track sales to each establishment, but to allow restaurants to showcase in other ways.

When asked to encapsulate what it’s really all about Dan Breden said “It’s for deals on meals, you just find whatever tickles your taste buds, print the promotion and savour the savings at eatsaver.com!” … Text book marketing some would say!

What a wonderful town!

My inspiration to get through the dog days of January is to imagine the places I would like to visit this year, and top of my list is the city that never sleeps and where the pavements make you feel brand new, according to a recent popular song.

The energy and vibe of Time Square is enough to re-energise the weariest of souls and the snow only adds to the fun.

Janine Lowe, our feng shui expert, has advised us to put a ‘wish board’ up in the north west area of our homes, to create the climate for dreams and aspirations to come true, so I have put a picture of the skyline of New York on the top. I have visited it twice before and the image of the

statue of Liberty against a backdrop of the sunset is one that imprints on the memory for a long time.

We have an American theme running through our feature this week as it is officially the start of the Prom preparation period.

There is a truth, universally acknowledged that despite economic gloom, all over England, sixteen year old girls will be dreaming of their prom dresses and mothers will be constantly beleagured by requests to buy said dress.

Unusually, the teenagers are right this time, as planning is essential for what has now become the highlight of a young girl’s life. The increasing popularity of the Prom has been fuelled by American television and now

all girls expect to have their day complete with dress, hair do, nails and make-up fit for the red carpet. The dress is all important and to ensure individuality, it has to be secured early as no one wants someone else to beat them to the dress of their dreams!

Rise in rents?

People who live in rented accommodation may soon have to fork out more cash, as a new survey has revealed 41% of landlords in the private rented sector plan to increase the amount they charge.

According to the report from The Paragon Group, 45%of respondents also forecast growing demand by consumers in 2011.

A total of 55%of those quizzed admitted they plan to keep leasing costs at their current levels, while 4% noted they will reduce the amount.

Chief executive of the organisation Nigel Terrington said proprietors are in a "strong position" at the moment because demand outstripped supply in 2010 and that trend looks set to continue in 2011.

“There continues to be a lack of finance available in the UK mortgage market, meaning that many potential buyers are opting to rent instead,” he added.

And operations director at the Association of Residential Letting Agents Ian Potter also recently claimed more individuals will be looking to rent this year.

I’m a first time buyer, how can I improve my chances of obtaining a mortgage?

Many potential home owners believe that 2011 could be a good time to purchase their first property.

With house prices reducing to levels not seen for many years and interest rates at record lows, the assumption would appear correct. Job security is obviously a concern for some, but the main stumbling block could be securing the funding. I don’t expect the recent rise in VAT to have an adverse effect on the housing market lenders are still more concerned with the risk of lending and the price of money on the swap markets.

At present Banks and Building Societies are adverse to any type of excessive financial risk. They are also acutely aware that the advice of the FSA is for lenders to be responsible in their lending. No one wants to see a repeat of the banking crisis and in my opinion we are not going to see the return of volume lending at 95% for many months, or even years to come. This all poses a problem for a first time buyer. On the risk front the lender can’t refer back to a track record of mortgage payments and even if you have been renting proving affordability of mortgage payments can still be difficult. On the deposit front (especially with house prices in West Sussex being above the country average) a greater emphasis is placed on the size of the deposit and also how it has been accumulated. However, there are many things that first time buyers can do, to improve their chances of a mortgage application being accepted.

Firstly is your deposit. The larger the deposit the less risk to the lender, so the better your chances of the application being accepted next and very importantly is your Credit Score. Make sure all current financial commitments are up to date and paid on time. Also the conduct of your bank account make sure there are no refused direct debits or bounced cheques. Ideally, make sure the balance is in credit, but certainly never over an agreed overdraft limit.

Your employment history is also important. The more stable your employment history the better. Somebody that has only been in their job for three months will be deemed high risk. Next is the Voters Roll. Make sure you are registered at your current address.

The fewer addresses you have lived at in the past three years, the better.

Finally your documentation. Make sure you can provide evidence of all income’s that you receive. Also have at least two forms of identification and at least three months bank statements available at the time of your application.

In summary First Time Buyers are having applications granted

by Banks and Building Societies, but applying to the right bank in the right way is of paramount importance.

My wife and I are buying a 1970’s detached house in Billingshurst. We are having a mortgage valuation, but do we also need a RICS Homebuyers survey?

Failing to have a survey could cost more than you bargained for. The Royal Institute or Chartered Surveyors (RICS) recommends all homebuyers should have a survey before purchasing property, whether it is a house or flat.

Homebuyers in England are facing bills for thousands of pounds by failing to have a sufficient survey of their property before purchase, according to new research from RICS. The research identified that a quarter of all homebuyers who only had a mortgage valuation report had to make unplanned building works to their property after purchase. On average, the bill for these works, such as damp proofing or repairing a roof, came to £1,800 – but the cost can be much higher.

Home surveys help buyers make informed decisions on whether to go ahead with buying a property, before legally committing themselves. Despite their importance, many buyers remain confused about surveys.

A mortgage valuation report is often wrongly assumed to be a building survey. Actually, it is purely an indication of the property’s value for loan purposes, prepared for the lender, not the purchaser. Most importantly, it won’t uncover any potential problems. However, when questioned, 58 per cent of respondents wrongly believed a valuation report included the building’s condition, including searching for damp and structural movement. A further 31 per cent were mistakenly under the impression it included advice on any legal issues a solicitor should investigate.

Even if you are paying for a mortgage valuation report, RICS still recommends you arrange a survey with your own surveyor.

There are two options available; an RICS Homebuyer Report, which provides an inspection and report on the property’s condition, plus a valuation. A building survey is more detailed, and may be the best option if the property is in a bad state of repair, has been significantly altered, or if you are planning a major conversion or renovation.

A survey might just be able to help you get a better deal on your property, too. 76 per cent of those questioned agreed that a more comprehensive survey could potentially allow you to negotiate a better deal with the seller.

In difficult economic times like this it makes sense to ensure you are getting the best possible value when purchasing a property. No one wants to find a nasty surprise down the line, or pay over the odds for a property that needs lots of work. A survey not only gives you a price valuation, but also a detailed report of the state of the property. Armed with this information you are in a much stronger position to decide whether to proceed with the purchase, or negotiate a better deal.

Busy times for the rental market Kathy Taylor

If the lettings market in Horsham during 2010 could be summed up in a single sentence it would be “Too many people wanting to rent – not enough properties to go round!”

So says Kathy Taylor, senior branch manager of Leaders Ltd, specialists in residential property letting and management.

According to Leaders, tenant demand was strong all year, particularly for good quality two and three bedroom houses.

Despite the disparity in demand and supply, tenants remained choosy over the standard of properties – as in previous years the key to a quick let in 2010 was good location and presentation.

Properties in good condition, with tasteful, neutral

décor, quality carpets/flooring, modern kitchens and bathrooms, and gas central heating, have been attracting tenants.

VAT free fees mean it’s not all gloomy This month’s increase in VAT has been a hot topic for many people over the past few days, hitting most of us hard just as we recover from the expenses of the festive season, but it is not all doom and gloom.

Local Estate Agents Munslow Bailey Gray are offering VAT free fees on all instructions received during January 2011.

House price drop Halifax figures show monthly and annual fall in house prices.

Property values in the UK dropped by 1.3% in December, according to the Halifax house price index.

This fall comes as a contrast to figures released this time last year, when monthly

costs had climbed by one per cent and buying a home was 3.4% more expensive.

Taking into account an annual decrease in property values of 1.6%, the average cost of purchasing a house is now calculated at £162,435.

Martin Ellis, housing economist at the bank, expects any further movement over 2011 to be limited, saying: “Interest rates are likely to remain very low for some time.

“This will continue to support a favourable affordability position for those entering the market.”

Keep price realistic People who are thinking of selling their property need to ensure they make a sensible valuation, according to one organisation.

The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) pointed out that considering there are not too many properties on the market it is "crucial" sellers price their home competitively.

It said: "As well as decreasing the chance of selling your home, mortgage advisers may refuse mortgage finance for

would-be buyers if they believe the asking price is not a sensible one."

report: nick hind Pictures: Chris Woolgar billingshurst 8 southwater 0 after all the frost and snow of the last month, it was the rain that threatened yet another weekend of fixtures in our coverage of the West sussex leagues.

Fortunately, we scoured the county to find some high ground to watch Billingshurst celebrate the New Year in style with a resounding thumping of Southwater in the Premier.

Striker, Matt Bulmer grabbed the headlines, capping an excellent team performance with a hat-trick as ‘Hurst ran riot, netting 8 goals without reply to leave lowly ‘Water rooted to the foot of the table.

A rout didn’t look on the cards after the opening exchanges as both sides probed their opponent and adapted to tricky conditions. But two goals in as many minutes from the instinctive No. 10, Bulmer, inflicted a gaping flesh wound on the visitors

that Hurst managed to reopen time after time.

Damage done within the first quarter, an adventurous 3-5-2 formation saw the home side build attacks at will; the extra man in midfield always available on the overlap to supply an endless stream of crosses for the strikers. Hurst’s total dominance gave their impact players the perfect platform to perform, and Ash Lewis revelled in the role of left side creator, splitting the tepid Water defence with ease to set up Nick Tilley for the 3rd goal.

With Hurst 4-0 up at the break thanks to a decisive Paul Elliott strike, a stand of any description was required from the visitors to stem the flow and salvage the pride. But, Matt Bulmer, in no mood to hand out seasonal good will, showed no mercy as he grabbed his hat-trick with

There were some well crafted goals on show all afternoon, but the finish of the game came from the lively Ash Lewis. Arriving late onto a teasing cross from skipper, Chris Simmons, Lewis’ technique matched his poise as he volleyed from the edge of the area and into the opposite corner for a goal that would have graced any football field.

With an exhausted Southwater out on their feet, and seemingly out of their depth, it was left to sub, Tim Osbourne and defender, Pete Proto, to kill off their wounded prey and put an end to the bloodshed.

Unsurprisingly, Southwater’s MOM went to their keeper, Mark Taylor, who excelled at times to keep the score down to single figures.

And although totally outshone, the team’s effort never dropped. But with only 1 win

in 8 league games and rock bottom of the table, Southwater will have to show guts, fight and dogged determination to turn around their fortunes.

Assistant manager, Olly Wilkins, didn’t pull any punches in his frank assessment: “We were outplayed, outfought and outclassed today- we have a young team that has to start learning quickly and adapt to the position we find ourselves in.”

2011 couldn’t have started any better for a bristling Billingshurst who see this win lift them to 6th in the league.

Mark Betts, Hurst’s Coach, oversaw a great team performance saying: “We have great individual talents at the club, and today was the first time they shone within the structure of an excellent team performance- they’ve set themselves the standard I expect for the rest of the season.”

Blogg fires hattrick for U14s

Cougars enjoy Chelsea treat Horsham under 14 boys played host to East Grinstead on Sunday afternoon.

Horsham fielded as many players as were available including four under 12 s and under 10 goalkeeper Joel Chinn who played for both teams.

All the boys played exceptionally well by passing and moving into space and ensuring their passes went to sticks.

Special mentions go to Aden Gwynne, Alfie Killner and Matthew White who all worked extremely hard in various positions and kept the continuity going.

Horsham came out 7-2 winners with goals from Hugo Vickers, Noah Chinn, Lewis Neal, Lewis Harvey and a hat trick from Matt Blogg (pictured above). Man of the match (voted by the boys) was George Comber.

Ashington Cougars enjoyed a footballing treat over the festive period as over 60 boys (and girls) from the club spent a day at Chelsea Football Club’s world famous training ground in Cobham, Surrey.

The players were put through the paces by the club’s award winning Chelsea Foundation

Coaches and spent the morning working on tactics and skills to help develop their game.

The afternoon was spent playing a mini tournament with medals presented to 15 of the players before finishing off with a penalty shootout.

“It was an amazing day and the coaches were great. To play at

Chelsea in the same ground as players such as John Terry and Frank Lampard is amazing and we all learned such a lot not just about football but how to warm up properly and what to eat before a game” said Joe Brooker, winner of the penalty shootout.

Chelsea Foundations coaches will visit Ashington Cougars FC

on the 20 and 21st April to run a soccer school open to both club players and young players from the local community.

Ladies stick to it after Horsham enjoy shaky start to qualify emphatic win

Having returned to the Mercian league after an absence of five seasons, the Horsham U16 boys are riding high at the top of the table after an emphatic victory against Sanderstead on Sunday.

Within a couple of minutes of pushback they secured a short corner, and although they failed to convert it was only a matter of minutes before Jack Dean scored from open play.

Five minutes later a well placed long ball from Zac Chinn found Jack and Horsham were 2-0 up. Midway through the half James Cooper capitalised on a loose ball in the circle and extended the Horsham lead. Horsham had two more short corners but failed to score.

Moments later Jack Dean made a break down the right and his cross found Jamie Whitehouse, his shot on goal narrowly missing as it powered into the top corner side netting.

Horsham lost a little concentration for a few minutes and Sanderstead made a rare counter attack.

Keeper Sam Johnson did well to save the first shot on goal but couldn’t keep out the rebound and the half finished 3-1.

After the break Horsham’s Jamie Whitehouse scored two in quick succession and put the result beyond doubt.

Andrew Paterson added a goal midway through the half and a few minutes later Jack Dean completed his hat trick. Shortly before the final whistle Zac Chinn scored from the edge of the circle.

The final result was 8-1 to Horsham.

Horsham Ladies 1st XI played in the National League Div 2 South Indoor Tournament at Whitgift School Croydon last weekend, finishing second in the tournament.

The result means Horsham start next season in National League Indoor and also qualify to play in the next round of the tournament on the 22/23 Jan at Moulton College, where they will be playing for promotion into NL Division 1 next season.

Horsham should have won their first game, but only drew 4-4 against Maidstone with goals from Jess Dean, Louisa Denman (2) and Fran Crossley.

The next game saw them lose 41 to East Grinstead, but it was a tight game which the score doesn’t reflect.

The game was held at 1-1 was the vast majority, but a 3 minute lapse in concentration from Horsham and some loose defending lead to three goals being scored in quick succession from which we couldn’t recover.

The Horsham goal scorer was Louisa Denman.

On Sunday, having lost Siobhan Henn to illness during the night, the squad went down to eight players - the smallest squad at the tournament. Outdoor captain

Zeph Fisher (who wasn’t playing) also took over as coach for the day due to the unavailability of coach Warren Gilmore.

Horsham went out hard, knowing they needed to win all 3 games today to ensure qualification.

The first game saw Horsham beat Harrow 4-0. The team was more patient, with fantastic build up play leading to goals for Jess Dean (2), Louisa Denman and Fran Crossley.

Horsham exerted dominance right from the start of their next game, barely allowing Cambridge

into the game.

Horsham moved the ball well and used to space fantastically. In the last 10 minutes of the second half Horsham got slightly complaisant and allowed Cambridge to get 2 cheap goals, but Horsham gained their momentum back and finished the game off with a fantastic team goal as they ran out 52 winners. Horsham goals scorers were Jess Dean (3), Steph Dent and Fran Crossley.

A tired Horsham took the pitch for their last time against St Albans, with both teams already

guaranteed qualified, only the final placing to be decided.

Having played in the same outdoor league as St Albans for a number of years, and drawing on their last outdoor meet, it was always going to be a extremely competitive game, with both sides fighting hard the entire game, with the score line remaining tight throughout and end to end hockey.

With 20 seconds left on the clock and the score level at 3-3 Horsham had a free hit in their own half.

If the game finished a draw or a loss for Horsham, St Albans would finish above Horsham, so Horsham knew they had nothing to lose and threw everything into their last attack of the game, which resulted in Louisa Denman finishing off a fantastic team effort by slotting the ball into the back of the net with 3 seconds left on the clock.

Horsham goals scorers in the 43 win were Steph Dent (2), Fran Crossley and Louisa Denman.

The whole team played fantastically during the tournament. Alison Playle, the goalkeeper, who plays her outdoor hockey for Tunbridge Wells, was outstanding throughout the tournament and made several superb saves, including one off her helmet.

Flying Hornets see off league leaders Horsham

Sutton Utd Billy Dunn enjoyed a memorable reunion with his former employers, scoring one and setting up another, as the Hornets continued their recent revival with an excellent win over the league leaders.

Sutton, beaten just twice in the league this season, struggled to impose themselves on a pitch that cut up quickly after the recent rain and were two goals behind after just 13 minutes as the Hornets continued the good work of Monday's equally impressive victory at Kingstonian.

The visitors briefly threatened a comeback when Craig Dundas scored, just before the hour, but Pat Harding put the result beyond doubt almost immediately and the hosts could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty as they recorded their 4th successive victory.

Horsham were strengthened by the return from suspension of Ben Andrews, Michael Hector and Ryan Woodford and, while Woodford had to content himself with a place on the bench, Hassan Nyang retained his place in the defence after Monday's fine display against the Ks. A good turnout of away support helped swell the crowd to over 400 but it was those from Horsham who were celebrating

first when Jamie Cade's strong run took him to halfway where he

slipped the ball through for Dunn to race some 30 yards before beating Kevin Scriven from the edge of the box for his second goal of the season.

A short while later, the Gorings Mead faithful were cheering again

when Horsham doubled their lead. A throw-in on the right, deep inside the Sutton half, was cleared as far as Nyang who left fly with a tremendous shot that Scriven's fingertips diverted onto the crossbar. As the ball dropped, Jamie Cade twisted and stretched to slide the ball over the goal-line to put the home side firmly in the driving seat.

It remained pretty much oneway traffic as the second half got under way.

Sutton produced a goal on 57 minutes that gave

them brief hope of a recovery. A spell of good possession from the table-toppers saw Davis pick up the ball in space and his looping cross found Dundas stealing in ahead of Nyang to head past Zawadski's full-length dive and into the far corner of the net.

During the early stages of the season, the Hornets might have been expected to buckle under the pressure of conceding but, if further evidence was needed of their newfound resolve, it was to come almost immediately.

Possession was wrestled from the visitors and the ball given to Dunn, on halfway. With Carey out wide in space, the goalscorer looked out to his right but instead picked out strike partner Harding with a brilliant disguised pass that set the former Eastbourne man on his way and he produced a great finish from the edge of the box to make it 3-1.

When Karl Murray was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area, following a corner, and Horsham were given the chance to make it four from the penalty spot. Dead-ball expert Storey stepped up but Scriven guessed right to make a super save, diving to his right to push the spot-kick away.

Lee Evans, Sales Executive at the Lifestyle Ford branch in Horsham, won his first ever major stock car racing title when he was crowned London Champion 2010 on 28th November 2010.

The race, which took place at Wimbledon Stadium, is part of the Rookie Rods, a budget, non-contact formula designed to make racing accessible to all those who have a passion for racing, yet do not have a big sponsorship deal backing them.

Lee, who has been racing since the age of five when he took up go-karting, said: “I have had to wait a long time to win my first major title and it feels great to be London Champion.

“I have come close to a big title on so many occasions, but I always seemed to just miss out. At times I felt disheartened, but racing is my passion and I stuck with it and it’s fantastic to see my hard work finally paying off.”

At the start of this year, Lee acquired a new trailer, which Paul Murrells, Sales Director at Lifestyle Europe and Stacey Carpenter at Vinyl Creations provided free sign writing for.

Lee said: “The staff at Lifestyle have been really good to me over the years. Not only has Paul provided me with some fantastic sign writing for my trailer, but all the guys at the branch are really great when it comes to shift swapping.

“Sometimes my racing requires me to be free on certain days at the weekend and everyone is extremely helpful and generous when I need to swap shifts to attend meets. I could not have done this without them.”

Indoor Cricket

Season starts

Cricket 2011 kicked off last Friday when the Annual Identilam U/16 Tournament began at Tanbridge School, Horsham.

This season 12 different Clubs, divided into 2 groups of 6, will contest for the Trophy, which will finish at the beginning of April.

First up, Champions Steyning took on Capel, who despite losing an early wicket, recovered through Tom Bullock and Sam Jacques, as Capel were able to post a challenging total of 108-4. Steyning ended 22 runs short.

West Chiltington batted consistently throughout their innings, with Tom Chambers, Ollie Tavares, & Alex Miller all retiring, and posted a massive 122-1 from their 12 overs.

The feature of Horsham Trinity’s batting was the running between the wickets as they scrambled across the line with 5 balls to spare.

In the final game, Ifield batted sensibly against some very good bowling from Nathan Baily & Tom Skiggs, but only Jo Smith with 25 not out was able to make any headway, and Ifield finished with a below-par 69-4. However, thanks to good bowling, Three Bridges’s batsmen had to work for the win, which was accomplished with 3 overs to spare.
