Many car parking charges in Horsham – including most at Swan Walk – are set to rise by 25 per cent and others by as much as 50 per cent. But the district council’s leader has dismissed suggestions that the increases will hit hard-pressed traders by putting off potential visitors to the town. Cllr Robert Nye told The Resident: “All of the surveys very clearly show that the public are not focused on the actual cost of parking, unless it is exceptional in relation to the surrounding towns. “People are looking for good-quality parking, easy to access without driving around trying to find a space. That’s far more important than the increase in prices. “In comparison to other towns, you will find we will be highly competitive even after the parking increases. “When you look at how much we’re putting the charges up, it will cost you more in petrol to go to Crawley. On Wednesday, the Conservativedominated council is expected to endorse proposals to: • Increase parking charges at Swan Walk from £1.60 to £2 for up to two hours, £2.40 to £3 (three hours), £3.20 to £4 (four), £4 to £5 (five), £4.80 to £6 (six) and £6.40 to £7 (eight). More than eight hours will stay at £10. • Increase charges at Hurst Road from £1 to £1.50 (two hours), £1 to £2 (three) and £2 to £3 (four). Up to five hours will stay at £4. • Increase charges at Piries Place by between 20p and 80p, at Denne Road by between 20p and 60p, and at the council’s offices by between 20p and 60p. • Increase almost all charges at BT, The Forum, London Road, New Street and North Parade by 10p and some at Horsham Library by 20p. • Increase most charges for five-day and quarterly tickets by five to eight per cent, for example adding £15.10 to a quarterly ticket at Swan Walk. Council chiefs plan to allocate £130,000 of the expected extra income to fund new parking machines, car park cleaning and lighting improvements and a parking customer

We had already committed to a second year with no council tax increase before the Chancellor announced his intention to help councils do so and we welcome his help. “We have identified most of the steps that are needed to close our budget gap next year and we will continue to consider ways we can complete the exercise during the Autumn. “Looking beyond 2012, we are preparing plans for more significant changes to the organisation and the way we deliver services and to generate our own resources through imaginative uses of our property assets. “These plans will take time and resources to deliver but will ensure we can meet the major financial challenges we will face in the medium term and beyond.” Conservative councillor Ray Dawe, deputy leader of the council, stressed: “There’s no real soft option. Car park plans are ‘half baked’ The leader of Horsham’s Liberal Democrats has questioned whether Tory councillors understand the financial pressure on residents. Cllr David Holmes told The Resident: “Liberal Democrats welcome the early information about proposed budget cuts. “This gives all councillors and the community nearly four months during which the suggestions can be carefully considered. “Are they the best way to tackle the
present financial difficulties and is the impact on the community acceptable? We will be looking at this. “Having this time for sensible consideration of the budget proposals makes the plan to agree the substantial rise in parking charges at the council meeting on October 19 totally unacceptable and unreasonable. “The report justifies the parking increases in terms of providing ‘the highest quality of user experience’. impact of the current financial situation on many families? “Most costs are increasing, employment is uncertain, people are getting poorer. They did not expect a 25 per cent increase,

Delivery man in ‘crushing’ horror Superdrug has issued a statement about a serious incident at the back of the Swan Walk shopping centre, Horsham. A man in the area told The Resident that a delivery man had been crushed by a cage or crate at about 8.45am on Wednesday. Paramedics put up screens around the injured man near a Superdrug lorry before the Sussex air ambulance landed in Horsham Park at about 9.30am. In the event, the helicopter was not needed. The man, aged about 40, was
taken by land ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, suffering from leg, arm and abdominal injuries. They were not thought to be life-threatening. A Superdrug spokesman said: “We can confirm there was an incident at our Horsham store concerning one of our delivery drivers. “The health and safety of our customers and colleagues is always our primary concern. At this time our priority is the wellbeing of our colleague and we will be offering any help we can to aid his recovery.”
Brother found hanging in garage The chairman of a school’s governors was found hanging after suffering from an injury sustained in his childhood, an inquest heard. Richard Sweet was found dead in the garage of his home at Mallard Way, Henfield, in February 2010 – nine days before what would have been his 52nd birthday. The retired IT consultant, who was chairman of governors at St Peter’s Primary School, Henfield, had been a Scout leader and involved with a
theatre company in Brighton. Brother John Sweet, who made the grim discovery, said Richard Sweet had been suffering from a jaw injury sustained in a football match during his schooldays. John Sweet told the inquest at Horsham Magistrates’ Court: “In mid-December, 2009, I had a phone call from my brother, saying he was in excruciating pain and wasn’t coping at all. “I went down (from Wokingham)
to see him and that was the start of where we are today. “He was getting progressively worse. He did start making suicidal comments to me. If he was eating anything it was soup because to chew was painful. He was very low and saw no prospect of any change. “He was getting more and more exhausted. He had very poor sleep but was always noticeably better when he’d had a decent night.” Coroner Christopher Wilkinson

The coroner did not read out the note, but he said in court: “In my view the note is relatively clear in what it is saying. It is a relatively detailed note.” Mr Wilkinson said a post mortem showed the cause of death was asphyxia due to hanging, but the inquest was continuing as The Resident went to press.

Man gambled away £300k after conning 80-year-old A conman has been sentenced to almost five years in prison for a systematic and heartless fraud on an 80-year-old West Chiltington man. Joseph James Smith, 33, of Nutbourne Road, Pulborough, was convicted of an offence of fraud by false representation and four money laundering offences. He was sentenced to four years and 10 months for the fraud and one year for each of the money laundering offences, to run concurrently alongside the fraud sentence. Operation Woodburn was a large and complex investigation by Sussex detectives into the fraud that took place over a 10-month period from April 2009. The victim, who was living alone and suffering from mild dementia, received a leaflet through his front door advertising roofing and gardening work. A week later, Smith came to his door informing him he needed work done to his roof. The victim agreed to the work and was asked for £8,000
up front. Smith also asked the man to invest in business projects, saying he would get his money back and receive a percentage of the profits, but these businesses never existed. The victim handed over money for several months – a total of about £460,000 – as Smith invented stories and continued to ask him for cash.

Smith told the victim he also needed a new roof, costing £50,000, but agreed to do this for £25,000 to £30,000 because he had invested so much money into the businesses. Police were eventually alerted by family members, who realised that the once-wealthy victim no longer
had any money. Smith was arrested after searches across West Sussex. Several new and expensive cars were seized and two of these will be auctioned for the victim. The investigation revealed that Smith had gambled away much of the stolen money, staking well over £300,000 with minimal winnings. After Smith was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court, Det Con Barry Collyer said: “This was one of the most heartless and vicious frauds I have ever encountered. “Smith ruthlessly targeted this vulnerable elderly man, preying on his honest character and systematically defrauding him of vast amounts of money for nearly a year. “We were very glad to have been able to bring him to justice. We were also able to confiscate two cars immediately, which will enable some money to go directly back to the victim. “We renew our advice to householders, especially the elderly, not to make any financial commitment to

cold callers. “If they persist, seek advice and support from neighbours and family or even legal advice. You can also contact your local trading standards team or police if you think criminal activity may be involved.”
News in Brief Museum robbery Robbers fled with thousands of pounds after hitting an employee at the Amberley Open Air Museum. The robbery happened at about 9.30pm on Sunday when a 43-yearold male employee was attacked by two men who forced him to open the restaurant safe. They ran off towards Houghton, dropped a small quantity of cash and may have got into a white car. The employee suffered bruising but did not need hospital treatment. No weapons were involved in the robbery. The raiders, who wore dark clothing, were carrying dark carrier bags or bags of a similar type. One is about 5ft 10in and of chunky build. Det Insp Jo Banks said: “Anyone who saw these men running away or getting into a car is asked to contact us via 0845 6070999, quoting serial 1428 of October 9.”
Bathroom horror An 84-year-old man was impaled on a shower pole, spearing his armpit, before suffering 20 per cent burns to his back and arms. The man, who lives alone, told firefighters he had been calling for help for about an hour before a neighbour heard him and raised the alarm. The gruesome incident happened at a house in Bines Road, Partridge Green, at about 10.30am on Sunday. Firefighters eventually managed to cut free the man and he was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.
GBH charges Three men have been charged following an attack on a 29-year old local man in the Pavilions leisure centre car park, Horsham, on July 23. Luke Talbot, 20, and Max Talbot, 22, both of St Christopher’s Close, Horsham, and Jason Engleby, 19 of Bostock Avenue, Horsham, are accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They are due to appear at Mid Sussex Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, October 20.

Former England international Darren Anderton helped raised thousands of pounds at a charity football match. The former Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur winger played for a Spurs Legends team against Redhill company Jedris at Gorings Mead, Horsham. Other ex-Spurs stars in action included Tony Galvin, David Howells, Stuart Nethercott, Steve Slade, Mark Stimson and Clive Wilson. The event, which attracted a crowd of about 400, raised about £4,000 to be split between St Catherine’s Hospice and Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Most of the money came from admission charges, but a raffle and auction continued into Sunday evening after the match in the afternoon. The game ended in a 4-4 draw.
Schools in the Horsham area are being asked to sign up for a charity event, aimed at setting a world record for the most people signing and singing simultaneously. Steve Powell, chief executive of SignHealth, said: “Earlier this year, 94,489 children took part in our sign2sing 2011 event, including pupils from Horsham, and smashed the Guinness world records. The previous record was 13,418. “On February 8, 2012, we are once again inviting children to take part in the world record attempt for the most people signing and singing a song at the same time. “There are already more than 300 schools registered. We need a lot more schools if we are going to smash our current record and involve around 150,000 youngsters, so we are urging schools to get in touch now.” The event is designed to raise awareness of deafness and the work of SignHealth, as well as acting as a fundraiser through sponsorship from businesses and a suggested donation of £1 for everyone taking part. A Horsham man has seen his sentence cut after being jailed for 42 offences including child abuse and making indecent images of children. At Hove Crown Court in March, 27-year-old Carl Leslie, of Talbot Lane, was sentenced to an indeterminate term of imprisonment with a minimum of six and a half years. Leslie appealed against the sentence. At the Court of Appeal in London on Tuesday, the minimum term was reduced to five years less 112 days, the time he spent on remand. No order was made for costs. Leslie admitted the following sexual offences: • Nine of sexual activity with a child under the age of 13 • Six of sexual activity with a child under the age of 16 • One of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 13 • Two of inciting children under 16 to engage in sexual activity • Ten of making indecent images of children • Ten of possession of indecent images of children He was also convicted of four breaches of a previously courtimposed Sexual Offence Prevention Order (SOPO). Three other offences – one of breach of a SOPO, one of inciting a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity and one of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16 – were taken into consideration. Altitude trouble but David’s effort gives school big boost Southwater resident David Spreadbury-Troy is back safe and sound from India – but only just! Mr Spreadbury-Troy and a friend tried to scale Stok Kangri, Ladakh – more than 20,000ft. They followed all the recommended steps to cope with the altitude, but Mr Spreadbury-Troy failed to acclimatise fully and was short of breath. He believes the issue may be genetic. After 12 days at altitude, peaking at 17,200ft, he made the decision to
withdraw from the trek. Upon returning to the base town, he was examined by a doctor and found to have high blood pressure, a result of the high-altitude sickness. Following rest and medication and a return to sea level, his blood pressure returned to normal. He told The Resident: “Each day was a struggle breathing and it got progressively harder as we climbed. “It was made clear to me by the doctor that I had made the right
decision at the right time, but I am very happy with what I achieved and I had an amazing experience.” Mr Spreadbury-Troy, of Southwater Street, Southwater, raised more than £1,000 for the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School, Horsham, and £400 for the Alzheimer’s Society. Carol Willard, deputy head of the
school, said: “We are delighted to accept the extremely generous donation from David on behalf of his sponsors and appreciate the huge effort he has made for our students. “We intend to use the money to develop a new sensory environment to enrich the educational experience of our learners.”

A charity golf event at Cottesmore Golf and Country Club raised £4,000 for the Matt Hampson Foundation, which supports young people seriously injured through sport. Former rugby union star Hampson, who was paralysed while training with England U21, said: “It is great to be associated with such a successful and fun event. It is easy to attack politicians. It is not so easy to balance competing claims when finances are tight, but in these difficult times that is precisely what we have to do. And that involves looking after the interests not just of those who have the sharpest elbows or the loudest voices but the silent majority as well. I have never liked the term ‘the Big Society’. It is the sort of clunky label that politicians are so fond of applying to otherwise common sense policies. However, clunky labels should not obscure the fact that if local communities work constructively together then they have the opportunity to take control of their own destiny, rather than be at the mercy of decisions taken by others. A government minister appeared ‘bored’ by discussion of cuts to bus services, a campaigner claimed this week. Caroline Collins said Nick Herbert, MP for Arundel and South Downs, was “visibly frustrated” while talking to Cowfold residents about the under-threat 86 bus service. Mr Herbert, who is also the policing and criminal justice minister, told The Resident it was a matter for West Sussex County Council but said he would continue to take up campaigners’ concerns. The 86 serves Horsham, Southwater, West Grinstead, Partridge Green, Shermanbury, Cowfold, Bolney, Ansty, Cuckfield including Warden Park School, and Haywards Heath including the Princess Royal Hospital. The service was one of more than 60 highlighted by The Resident in May as being recommended for removal in September or October. Almost half of the services originally listed – including the 86 – have been spared the axe until at least April next year. But the future of these services remains uncertain, so Mrs Collins, Dawn Jelley and Anita Casey, all from Cowfold, met Mr Herbert to express their concerns. I was disappointed to read the long diatribe from Caroline Collins that you carried on the front page of The Resident (October 7). Caroline is a formidable campaigner who is to be congratulated for drawing attention to the importance of effective transport links for the villages in our district – and for being prepared to try to do something about it. However, I don’t think it helps her cause much to attack people who can and want to help identify solutions that work for local people. With the wholehearted backing of county councillor Lionel Barnard, fellow district councillor Jonathan Chowen and local MP Nick Herbert, I offered to work with Caroline and her group of campaigners and to help find a solution. As a result of Caroline’s campaign and the representations I and the other local elected representatives made, the initial recommendation to end public funding of the 86 bus service was withdrawn, giving the local community more time to explore the full range of options. I am organising a joint meeting on October 17 in Cowfold Village Hall with Cowfold and West Grinstead parish councils, Caroline and her campaigners and a team of five officers from West Sussex County Council, set up expressly to work with and help local communities. My hope is that at the end of this process we are able to put in place effective measures to ensure that the people of Cowfold are able to access the places they need to go.

Tories love attacking unions Maggie Thatcher was Maggie the Milk Snatcher – a byword for Tory penny-pinching cruelty. Francis Maude will go down in history as Maude the Pension Pilferer. If we let him get away with it. The government has already reneged on a solemn and binding undertaking (and such things are two a penny with politicians) to link pensions to increases in the cost of living. By sleight of hand they have invented a brand new measure of the cost of living and, surprise, it comes up with a lower figure than the retail price index. Far from sympathising with the pensioners, the privileged and pampered politicians are pinching their pennies. The government has refused to
negotiate in good faith with the public sector unions. They behave as though attacking the unions is more important than making a grown-up decision over public sector pensions. All of the teacher unions are acting together to lobby Parliament on October 26. This is where Maude’s union bashing has got him. Firstly the ATL, the most inoffensive and moderate of unions, has taken strike action for the first time. Now the secondary heads’ union, ACSL, is on the march. And if the Tory Party cannot depend on the ACSL they cannot depend on anybody. Maude should stop pretending to be a reincarnation of the blessed Margaret and remember her ignominious defeat over the poll tax. Derek McMillan Meadowgate, Horsham

Campaigner deserves support I would like to commend you on the lead article in The Resident (October 7). I would also like to congratulate Caroline Collins for highlighting the injustice of transport cutbacks to rural areas and the fact that our MP, Mr Nick Herbert, was lamenting the fact he had the same discussions with countless constituents That is what we pay you for, Nick, and why you got our votes at the last general election. I had meetings and correspondence with Mr N Herbert when his party were in opposition. He would not speak up then because he had a position in the Shadow Cabinet. Same old! And he would not sign Early Day Motions (EDMs). There was no problem opening garden fetes and patting babies’ heads or even getting the volume on train horns reduced or a photoshoot in every local paper every week. Votecatchers? According to your article, he is passing your/his 86 bus problem to MPs (Henry) Smith, (Nicholas) Soames and (Peter) Bottomley. They cannot do anything for you individually and cannot
speak up on your behalf in the House of Commons because you are not in their constituency. So that is a get-out line. In Sussex there are several MPs who have a portfolio. This means there are a lot of voters who cannot object to government policy through the House of Commons as their MP is compelled to tow the party line. Most of these ministers are in so-called ‘safe’ seats. Strange? Indeed, some of the MPs have been parachuted into these seats for that reason. Some of the MPs may not even be local to the area, never mind the constituency. Despite the leather-elbowed country jackets, they may live most of the week in the City, even though there is an excellent train service direct from Victoria (five minutes in ministerial car from the House of Commons) to the heart of the constituency. And they want to cut your number 86 bus service? I wish you luck with your campaign, C Collins. Maybe you, I and others should consider who we want to speak on our behalf next time there are safe seats for the taking in our House of Commons.

Bernard’s still chugging along I have been very interested to see the articles by Sam Allsop about the Steyning Line. Readers might be interested to know that the station master at Steyning in the 1920s was one Charles J Holden. His son, Bernard John Holden, was born at Barcombe station on March 15, 1908, when Charles was station master there. Bernard’s schooling was at Steyning Grammar School and he went on to join the Southern Railway, eventually rising to senior managerial positions on British Railways.
Bernard chaired the first meeting at Haywards Heath, on March 15, 1959, when the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society was formed. Bernard is still alive, having reached his 103rd birthday in March this year, and is the muchloved president of the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society. Since he was born at Barcombe, on the old East Grinstead and Lewes railway line, he can be said to have been involved with what has become the Bluebell Railway all his long life.

Forest pupils to the rescue for Cubs How does a Cub leader get 25 Cub Scouts through their science badge? Ask for the help of the Forest School. This was the predicament that faced Jackie Ward, leader of 1st and 9th Horsham Cubs, who said: “With little experience of running
science experiments, it has been pretty difficult for Cubs to achieve their science badge.” But with the help of Year 10 and Year 11 pupils from Forest, the Cubs completed a range of activities and experiments, from producing magnets by using
electrical currents to investigating the growing requirements of plants. And by the end of the evening all 25 had earned their scientist activity badge. Jane Green, Science teacher at Forest, said: “It was great to be

Winning entries in the Nature Photographer of the Year competition are on display in the Visitor Centre at Warnham Local Nature Reserve. The competition attracted well over 300 entries from Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire – and even one from Spain. Friends chairman Terry Slattery presented certificates and prizes to overall winner Alex Winser plus category winners Angela La Roux, Mike Rowe, John Wilks and 14-year-old Aniera Sanchez Farino. Their work and other photos will be displayed at the reserve until at least December. Certificates were also presented to those who finished second and third, as well as to 15 highly commended runners-up. Recent public events have included pond dipping and a walk around the reserve at dusk, while members enjoyed a bat walk and a moth night. Feed the Birds Day, October 30, will include contributions from the RSPB local group and the Friends, together with a display of optics by
Astronomia of Dorking. The annual Fungus Foray with Professor Maurice Moss is scheduled for November 13. In view of the popularity of the Christmas wreath-making workshop last year, two events have been organised this year – morning and afternoon sessions on December 13. Advance booking is required. The reed-bed growth outside the Tern Hide has been cleared. This is now a preferred spot for Greylag and Canada Geese to gather, just outside the hide windows, and it is hoped the area will be favoured by other species.

‘Memorable’ visit by Chinese students Millais School hosted 12 Chinese students and six members of staff from TIFERT College, Tianjin, who were given a tour of Horsham. Zhao Jiaping, the Chinese group leader, said “Staying with Millais students and their families was a wonderful opportunity for us all to experience English culture and hospitality first hand. “Our time at Millais was a truly memorable experience.” More than 20 girls from Millais will
visit TIFERT College this month as part of an exchange programme. Sarah Lopez-Ferreira, 15, said: “I’m taking Mandarin Chinese as a GCSE subject, so it was really good for me to host a Chinese student. “She was interested in our culture, fun to be with and very kind to my little brother. “I am very excited to be going on this once-in-a-lifetime visit to China, to experience their culture as a comparison.”

The other side of bankers Staff at Barclays, in the Carfax, Horsham, have helped raise thousands of pounds for charity by supporting two events. Bank workers joined supporters of Canine Partners on a stall outside the branch before welcoming Barclays employee Matt Hunt into town during one of his five marathons in five days.
More than £3,000 was raised for the charity, including matched funding by Barclays. The branch raised £1,620 for Macmillan Cancer Support, contributing to the West Sussex team total of £12,000, by staging a coffee morning and supporting a Zumba event at The Forest School.

Think of fundraising ideas and you might imagine a cake sale, a sponsored run or even sitting in a bath of baked beans. Walking over hot coals probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But fire walking is fast emerging as a contender on the fundraising scene. Thirty volunteers recently took part in a sponsored fire walking event in West Chiltington, supporting the Alexandra Bastedo Champions (ABC) animal sanctuary. The sanctuary needs more money if it is to carry on caring for animals in need. Weekly hay and food costs alone are a staggering £287. The event raised about £5,000, a healthy boost for the sanctuary. So how does somebody go about rising above the pain and nerves associated with this kind of extreme activity? The walkers are also discouraged from negative body language, as this can severely hinder their ability. Emma’s mum, sister and uncle supported her at the fire walk. She was surprised by the number of other people who turned up and added:
“The cheering from the crowd and the music really helps spur you on.” Emma became increasingly nervous in the week before the fire walk – her main concern was that her hair might catch light – but she had no doubt she would go through with the challenge. Her love of animals played a big part in her determination and she raised £160 for the ABC animal sanctuary. She was surprised it was not more painful and said without the training she would have thought it near impossible. Not everybody can cope with this kind of extreme activity – usually because they are not susceptible enough to the techniques used to hype them up, rather than having an especially low pain threshold. But Emma said she would advise others to take part in fire walking and gain the same sense of achievement.

he first Friday in October, every year, is really a very special day. Many beer aficionados will recognise it, but most others will not know it is OLD FRIDAY. It is the day every year we, at Weltons Brewery, launch our prize winning winter beer, Horsham Old. (It was voted Best Beer at the Sussex Beer Festival 2002). We mark the launch with a massive party in the brewery, attracting Morris Dancers, not only from West Sussex but also from neighbouring Surrey and they, of course, add an atmosphere & liveliness which makes this an unmissable event on the 7th October this year. Tickets are free from the Brewery and Beer Essentials in East Street. It will be available on draught in the pubs on this page and to take away from Beer Essentials in East Street. After a lot of hard work this year we have developed a great range of bottled beers which reflect our aim to produce beers that are as natural as possible and are totally free from any added preservatives, colouring or flavouring, all of which are bottle conditioned. This is the process whereby the beer is bottled with the yeast and in the process of secondary fermentation and maturation in the bottle, the beer is carbonated perfectly naturally. We have restarted bottling Pridenjoy, our flagship low gravity (2.8%) beer. We are putting it in 330ml and calling it Light Ale for the pub trade and 500ml bottles as Pridenjoy for the off-licences. The other beers are Sussex Pride 4%, Old Cocky 4.3%, Export Stout 4.7% & Old Harry 5.2%. We do occasionally bottle some of the seasonal beers we brew and the next will be Black Dragon Smoked Porter. This is named after the Black Dragon Morris Men recently formed in the town. The Smoked beers are interesting because you don’t see many brewed, but if you go back 200 years or more all beers would have had a smokey background to the flavour because the malt was roasted or kilned over wood fires which imparted the smokiness. The next one to look out for from Weltons will be Black Turkey 5.2%. This is a smoked stout & the reason for this smoked beer is so when you’re in the pub on Christmas Day, as you’re drinking the beer it will remind you of the burning turkey in the oven. Talking of Christmas, we’ll brew our usual 12 Beers Of Christmas & we’ll produce Santa’s Six Pack, the perfect Christmas present. Also this year we will preview the beers with an event in the brewery on Saturday the 3rd of December and this will be in the form of a music festival featuring local bands. Congratulations to The Pass restaurant at South Lodge Hotel, which has been awarded its first Michelin Star. Head chef, Matt Gillan, said: “I feel truly honoured. To be awarded a Michelin star is a remarkable achievement. I am immensely proud of the team. It just goes to show that

Upgrade is Company customers serenaded as they’re styled underway at We decided to Horsham ‘organise a live band station after the great success Railway operator, Southern, has provided information on the work being carried out at Horsham station. Major refurbishment work is currently going on at the station under the National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP) scheme. NSIP is a Department for Transport-funded programme of projects designed to enhance approximately 150 medium sized stations across the rail network in England and Wales. A spokesman for Southern said: “The refurbishment work at the station includes the re-arrangement of the internal layout to provide an improved passenger experience and increased retail provision, to enhance the station’s basic facilities.” Those improvements include a new station entrance and ticket office, a choice of retail outlets, refurbished toilets, more parking and cycle shelters on both sides of the station. Temporary measures are in place to continue the service at the station. Those include a ticket office to the left of the building including ticket machines. Although there is a restricted service provided by the existing retail outlets, all facilities on the platform and train services remain unaffected.
The Lounge coffee shop at The Company Hairdressing recently introduced live music to entertain its customers. The venue, on Middle Street in Horsham, welcomed local band Makks on what turned out to be one of the sunniest days of the summer, to play outside the café. Paola Norris, manager at The Lounge, said: “We decided to organise a live band after the great success of the Horsham Festival of Sound, when we had the same band play here. “It turned out to be a great way for people to celebrate the last days of sunshine. Work begins on global HQ in Slinfold A J Walter Aviation, the West Sussex-based aircraft spare parts supplier, has started work on site, building its new global headquarters in Slinfold. After several months of demolition and site preparation, the construction phase for the new campus has begun. The new HQ is part of the
company’s already-successful plan for growth, which includes more staff and will provide warehouse capacity to house additional products to service new customers. The site spans more than 60 acres and will initially provide over 240,000 square feet of purpose-built office and storage facilities for A J Walter’s extensive range of Airbus and Boeing components and engines. Christopher Whiteside, president of A J Walter Aviation, said: “It will provide a first-class experience for visitors, and employees will benefit from modern, streamlined and efficient office layouts, a training ‘theatre’, on-site catering and restaurant, as well as outstanding sports and leisure facilities, and guest accommodation.” Andy Smith, logistics director at the organisation said: “We are spearheading a global strategy designed to deliver exponential growth for the business” “Our future path will demand facilities of the highest standard and the only way to ensure all of our technical, organisational and social priorities are met is to design and build our own exceptional environment.” The company is also keen to ensure it is developing a sustainable, eco-friendly new campus. Roy Jones is project manager at McLaren Construction and is supervising the development of the site. He said: “All of the aggregates from the existing buildings are being recycled to reduce CO² emissions and traffic congestion and we will be installing renewable energy sources on site. “We are committed to best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation. We are ahead of schedule and AJW’s impressive new UK campus facility will open in Summer 2012.”

Gok draws a crowd at supermarket There was a constant queue for manicures at Sainsbury’s Ladies’ Day last week. The Horsham-based website development and photography company, which was established by 18-yearold entrepreneur Greg McClarnon, has been recruited to photograph a selection of shows taking part in the Shakespeare for Schools Festival. The event involves around 800 schools and their students putting on a 30-minute performance of a Shakespeare play. Splaat Media will be attending 32 of the school’s performances and offering the photographs they take to the parents of around 650 children. Managing director Greg McClarnon said: “This is a massive achievement for us. I’m really pleased that the work and reputation of Splaat Media has been recognised and I’m really looking forward to this project.” Splaat Media will take photos, print and label them on the day of each performance and display and sell them on site. The organisation was founded by Greg, a teenage entrepreneur, while he was still at college. It has already won business from the likes of Business Intros networking group and Haldi Indian restaurant as well as from numerous schools and theatre productions. Marathon success for chocolatier Sarah Payne, the managing director of Cocoa Loco, has raised over £1468 for charity by running a marathon and hosting a chocolate sale at her home. The founder of the successful chocolate-making company based in Partridge Green took part in the 26-mile race in aid of Tommy’s charity. The marathon was organised by St Austell running club and was held at The Eden Project and the surrounding area in Cornwall. Sarah said: “It was a really tough marathon. So hilly and in lots of places like a cross country course, but I can truly say I loved every minute of it. It was the most challenging thing I’ve ever attempted and I would love to do it all again, even though I was really sore and could barely move the next day. “966 runners finished the half marathon and 314 of us completed the full marathon. “I was second to last, but I really didn’t mind. I didn’t set myself a time as I just wanted to enjoy my first marathon and I wanted to stay on good mental form during the race. The marshals were all brilliant and so encouraging even for a slow coach
like me.” Sarah was cheered on by her family, including Oscar, her son, who persuaded a marshal to let him wait for her 300m from the finish line and run the last leg with his mum. The rest of the family went along too, such as her mum, dad, daughter Lauren and Sarah’s sister, her
husband and son. Sarah added: “They all surprised me on the morning of the marathon by turning up to support me with T shirts saying ‘Team Sarah Payne’. My nephew’s shirt said ‘Team Auntie Sarah’. “They were the most awesome support crew, and several times

they surprised me by jumping out as I came round a corner along the course, supplying me with drinks and hugs.” Tommy’s charity funds research into pregnancy problems and aims to give every baby the best chance of being born healthy. The Eden Project was built in a disused clay mine in Cornwall, transforming it into a rich, global garden where people can learn about nature and the world around them. Cocoa Loco was established in 2005 when Sarah decided to go back to work after her children had all started school. Initially focusing on web-based orders for brownies, the business has grown to a staff of 10 and makes a wide range of chocolate-based products at a large factory near Partridge Green. The company has won prestigious corporate contracts and orders with the likes of Highgrove and Jamie Oliver. Big city support gig for two Horsham bands Two Horsham-based bands are heading for the big city to support cult South London band Alabama 3. Both Mailman and Random Tandem are heading to Brixton Jamm, a

music venue in London, on December 2 to play at Alabama 3’s end-of-tour after party. Alabama 3 achieved international fame when their track Woke up this Morning was chosen as the title track for hit TV show The Soprano’s. Local musician and music producer Jamie ‘Stan’ Stanley is in both bands. He said: “It’s a great opportunity for us to play to a different audience and make new friends. We’re also hoping to get a huge local crowd along to support us and make a night of it!” If you can’t make it to London or you just can’t get enough Random Tandem, catch the band at The Shelley Arms in Broadbridge Heath on October 15 and at The Red Lyon in Slinfold on November 4. Battle for Horsham’s revered music title is hotting up Danny Randon

Battle of the Bands - Heat One
“This year’s competition, like every year, is a great opportunity for local bands to play in a professional environment and showcase their talent” – according to Mandy Ansell, chairwoman of the Horsham District Live Music Alliance, as Horsham Battle Of The Bands returns for another year. Declaring the first heat of this annual competition well and truly underway at the Chameleon Club were previous contenders The Glass Room. Although their polished rhythms and sturdy cohesion between instruments proved to be well-received by tonight’s crowd, this alt-rock trio lacked onstage energy and an active stage presence during their performance. However, their music was written and performed with skill, signifying their clear potential. Also seen in last year’s competition were Billingshurst-based pop-punks Moments Too Late, who were next to take the stage. Once nervous kids performing
their debut gig in the very same venue a year ago, this quartet has matured into a confident ensemble, yet still possessing a cool youthful swagger. With their melodies powerful and their hooks uplifting, Moments Too Late certainly marked their territory on the night.
You can expect an ‘even better show at the final ’
Next to perform were A Room Swept White. A five-piece that describe their sound as ‘hardcore metal’, they faced technical difficulties head-on at the start of their set, if sounding slightly sloppy to begin with, before delivering a frantic set of melodic metal riffs, lightning-fast drum beats, and a far-from-static stage personality. With the sheer brutality of the last performance, the next band, Two Types Of Clothing, and their young, dumb and very fun punk sound was a superb contrast to the evening’s
proceedings. Their well-paced set was a declaration of respectable showmanship and perseverance. The last band to take to the stage were One Less Than Perfect, a femalefronted collective who combined elements of disco, pop and rock to create an enjoyable fusion of sound for the large crowd who had come to support them at their debut gig. Considering this is their first ‘official’ show, their flamboyant identity was outstanding throughout the performance. Shortly after One Less Than Perfect brought the night to an end, head judge Bill Foote awarded third place to show-openers The Glass Room, second place to show-closers One Less Than Perfect, and the top place was awarded to Moments Too Late. The band members said: “We’re absolutely stoked! You can expect an even better show at the final, with the possibility of a new song and we might even dress in tiger suits especially for it!” Now, with Moments Too Late and One Less Than Perfect guaranteed a place in the final at the Carfax Bandstand on October 28, this battle has only just begun.

The Belarus State Ballet Academy was founded in Minsk in 1928. Since then, the art of dance, which presents the range of human feelings and emotions has been developed and nurtured at the state dance school. Today, the academy competes with other professional ballet schools worldwide. And the teaching curriculum in the special subjects mirrors that of the Moscow Ballet Academy and A.J. Vaganova Academy of St Petersburg. The school has one main objective - the education of the ballet dancers. I am considering Buying-to-Let but is this a good time?
As the rental market continues to boom, with exceptionally strong demand for rented accommodation across the board, there has been an increase in the number of people considering investing in a property too rent out. This includes those new to letting and seasoned investors wishing to purchase more properties for their existing portfolios. It’s not difficult to see why buy-to-let is an appealing option for many at the moment. The stock market is alarmingly volatile and interest rates are very low, giving poor returns on savings. In contrast, rents are strong, yields are good and there are many opportunities for making a good, solid investment in the current slow sales market. In Horsham we are seeing ongoing high demand for all types of rental property, in particular for two and three bedroom houses. Landlords are seeing good rental yields and many tenants are choosing to rent for longer now, giving landlords greater security. For people considering investing in a property to let there have been significant improvements in the buy-to-let mortgage market in recent months, with new lenders entering the market and others expanding their buy-to-let product range. In fact the number of products available via Leaders Mortgages has increased by almost 25 per cent since the beginning of April, with regional building societies in particular demonstrating an increased appetite to lend in the buy-to-let market with a good choice of competitively priced mortgages. With more lenders and products available, and the historically low Bank of England base rate, there is now more competition in the market, and this has resulted in a fall in the pricing of variable and fixed rates. There have also been improvements in loan to values (LTVs) with a good selection of 80% LTV products currently available. This means that landlords are now able to borrow more, and with high tenant demand and increasing rents, lender rental income requirements are easier to satisfy. Whilst the lettings market is looking very positive for landlords, it is still important to exercise caution and I always advise investors to take a long-term view and to consult and experienced, independent letting expert on exactly what and where to buy for the best investment. The debate taking place in recent weeks had been around.. not would the Monetary Policy Committee raise or reduce interest rates this month, but whether they would vote to re-introduce their programme of monetary stimulus known as Quantitative Easing (QE) The Bank base rate has remained unchanged but the decision has been made that a further £75bn of new money will be injected into the economy through the purchase of assets including government bonds. With the UK’s underwhelming second quarter gross domestic product figures actually being revised downwards to only 0.1% from a previously reported 0.2% it would appear that the MPC has recognised that the economy is in need of further medicine to attempt to keep us from falling back into
levels of equity, can now access 2 year fixed rates at an average of 5.39%. The average 2 year fixed rate is now 4.22%, marginally up on September, but 5 year fixed rates have fallen further and the average is now 4.73%. These rates have stimulated increased activity amongst purchase and remortgage borrowers during September as people capitalise on these unprecedented rates. Overall mortgage product numbers declined a little in September but have rebounded in the first week of October, returning to levels similar to August. While the up! might have the interior space and features of a larger car, its prices are in keeping with its small footprint, starting at £7,995 (RRP OTR), and rising to £11,180. Shown in production form at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the up! is an entirely new vehicle that offers space for four, the latest technology and highly efficient engines. I’ve been involved in football a long time, but this week is probably up there with the toughest. “I thought it (the abuse) was unfair. And Concord doubled their lead in the 21st minute, Stokes again showing his class with an excellent finish. Despite a much-improved performance, the Hornets could not find a way back into the game. Horsham began the second half brightly, but substitute Kyle Asante floated in a cross from the right and Harry Elmes put the result beyond doubt after 67 minutes. Luchford said: “We played some decent football at times. In the first half especially we had enough chances to be in the game, but weak defending has cost us. “They’ve given me everything. I’ve got no problem with the effort. We could have been a bit more clinical, with a bit more quality in that final third, but on the whole it was better.” The crowd, 548, was Horsham’s
biggest of the season, with no Premier League or Championship matches and under-16s being allowed in free of charge. It remains to be seen how many of them return on a regular basis, starting with the home match against the Metropolitan Police tomorrow (Saturday).

George Hillier’s fifth-minute goal set Horsham YMCA on the road to a 2-0 win at Sidley in Division 1 of the Sussex County League. Sidley’s Marc Munday was dismissed for violent conduct soon after Hillier’s strike and Tim Martin added the clincher five minutes from time. Sidley had two goals disallowed. Danny Leach’s goal was enough to clinch a 1-0 home win for Hailsham against Storrington in Division 2. A penalty by the prolific former Albion youngster made the difference, but Storrington produced a resolute performance to push the division’s pacesetters all the way. Both goalkeepers were well employed, with Swans gloveman Jason Downer attracting special praise from his opponents after a string of wonder stops. Steyning are off the bottom after notching their first league win. Town squeaked past Little Common 4-3 after leading 3-0 by the 21st minute. Goals from Adam Burton (two), Ryan de Freitas and David Harris sealed a result that could kickstart their season, with games against mid-table Mile Oak and fellow strugglers Oakwood on the horizon. Jake Holmes scored five times, taking his season’s tally to 15, as Forest won 6-1 at Faygate United in the Sussex Intermediate Cup. Kyle MitchellHarris added the sixth on 85 minutes. Broadbridge Heath went out of the same competition against Eastbourne Borough Reserves. Dan Attwater grabbed a consolation goal from the spot in a 3-1 home defeat against a side who included Horsham legend Gary Charman. Heath boss Steve Painter said: “Gary Charman said we created enough chances to win four matches.” Roffey are out after a 6-0 beating by Division 1 side AFC Uckfield.
Chelsea visits The Chelsea Foundation and Ashington Cougars will run soccer schools at Steyning Grammar School on October 25-26, December 19-20 and February 16-17. Despite a late try by Liam Yeates, Horsham were on the wrong end of a close result for the second successive week. The home side had to do a lot of defending early on, but they couldn’t keep Sheppey out for long. Sheppey recycled the ball quickly and Martin Robinson found a gap to burst through and score a converted try. Sheppey’s attack was relentless and Horsham gave away a poor penalty, which Brad Box calmly scored to put the visitors further in front. Handling errors prevented Horsham from scoring after a direct run by Nick Essex, but strong mauling from five metres out resulted in Rob Grantham-Hill being forced over the line. Matt Goodsir converted before Box missed a penalty and Horsham went into half time trailing 10-7. The second half started much the same as the first, with Sheppey on top. Horsham did not help themselves when another penalty was given away, this time scored by Box, and Goodsir missed with a kick at the other end. Play started to deteriorate and become scrappier, with neither team managing much fast, flowing rugby.

Sheppey remained on top but looked vulnerable to the pace of the Horsham counter attack. In a match becoming dominated by penalties, Horsham gave away yet another and Box superbly kicked over from a very tight angle. Horsham responded magnificently and James Whiting raced through two tackles for a much-needed try which Goodsir converted, 14-16. Horsham had the wind in their sails, but their penalty count was getting ridiculous and another was given away. Box made no mistake and, out of nowhere, Robinson put a superb drop goal over the posts to extend Sheppey’s advantage to eight points. Yeates found space in a stretched defence to reduce Horsham’s deficit to three points and the home side won a penalty, a chance to equalise with the final kick of the game. Goodsir’s kick from a near-impossible angle fell just short, giving Sheppey an important win and leaving Horsham with a lot to think about.

Horsham U10 followed up their win in the Crawley festival by triumphing again at Chichester. Big wins against Fareham Heathens U10 and Portsmouth U10, plus a closer victory against Worthing U10, set up a pool decider against Chichester U10. George Howard scored the decisive try.
Strong running from Horsham’s backs helped secure a 4-1 win against Pulborough U10 in the final. Horsham U13 were well beaten by Brighton U13 after drawing 7-7 against Brighton B U13. Ben Murphy, back after breaking an arm in a skateboard accident, scored a fine try which Ollie Joels converted.

Dan’s the man as Horsham win away Martin Read Hockey
Horsham rose to fifth in the table with a 2-1 win at Bexleyheath and Belvedere, starting assertively and maintaining territorial supremacy throughout. Numerous saves by the home side’s goalkeeper denied Horsham until Will Richardson scored from close range, but Bexleyheath and Belvedere equalised just before the interval. At half time, coach Sam Naismith highlighted a flaw in the hosts’ defence, resulting in a pinpoint build up and winning goal by Dan Rhodes. The home side’s coach admitted: “The scoreline doesn’t reflect the
pressure Horsham applied.” Heidi Menniss scored the final goal of the game as Horsham Ladies lost 2-1 at Chelmsford Ladies. Zac Chinn’s double strike helped Horsham Hotshots beat St Francis Leprechauns 3-0 in the Sussex Development League, for boys of secondary school age. Will Salmon scored the other goal, Daniel Hood made some excellent saves and Sean Watson also impressed. Horsham Boys U10 finished fourth in the minis festival at Eastbourne. The boys beat South Saxons U10 1-0, with a superb finish by Luke Portman after a passing move involving George Cardwell and Ted Thomas. Horsham lost 1-0 to Eastbourne
U10, almost equalising through James Harvey after resilient defending by Tom Emery and James Ormerod, then
drew with East Grinstead U10 before Portman equalised in a draw against Hailsham U10.
Horsham Boys U10
For the second time this season – and not for the last time – Albion did not play at the weekend due to international fixtures. I guess this is something we will have to get used to, as we now support a Championship club with eyes on the Premier League. Only a couple of seasons ago, every time England played I could be found in the crowd. I followed England for 10 years, missing less than a handful of games. I watched some great performances, such as the 5-1 win over Germany in Munich and the 1-0 victory over Argentina in 2002. But I saw some rubbish too, none more so than the final game at Wembley when Germany beat us. Then there’s the disappointment at every tournament when we get knocked out. Last Friday, England qualified for the Euros next Summer. Will England win it? I doubt it. I’m sure the England players will do their best and the support – including a large number of Albion fans – will be fantastic, but I just don’t see it being enough. A couple of other good things came out of last weekend. Bobby Zamora was back in the England squad and for a while it looked like he would start against Montenegro. He’s scoring regularly for Fulham, so it’s only a matter of time before he gets his chance. Our current goal machine, Craig Mackail-Smith, not only made his full debut for Scotland against Liechtenstein but also scored the only goal. Well done Craig. My days of following England may have ended, but if Albion ever play in Europe I’ll be there. Don’t all laugh, it is possible. Fulham, Birmingham and Stoke are all playing in Europe this season – and if they can do it, I don’t see why we can’t. Tony, Gus and everyone at the club are looking to push Albion forward to become a Premier League side within a couple of seasons. Apart from the small challenge of staying in that league, the obvious progression is to get into Europe. Tomorrow (Saturday), Albion are back in action against Hull – a bit later than usual (5.30pm), but at least it’s a Saturday game. This is something else we will have to get used to, with kick-offs not only at odd times but on almost any day of the week. After a couple of disappointing results, let’s hope we get back to winning ways. Europe here we come.

Rising star needs your help Tom Norris Youth Golf

Since joining Mannings Heath Golf Club last June, PGA professional Carl Watts has taken the club’s junior system to new heights. In the space of just 12 months he became the junior golf organiser, introduced his Exclusive Golf Tuition School and set up the Carl Watts Youth Academy. Now the two-time European Challenge Tour event winner wants to take his successes a step further, by creating a golfing scholarship for rising star Luke Bennett. The 16-year-old Collyer’s student has been a member at Mannings Heath for just over two years, but has already taken on the junior vicecaptaincy and cut his handicap from 14 to six. Watts, who has 25 years of competitive and coaching experience, said: “We are trying to create a Youth Academy scholarship programme and we want Luke to be the first recipient. But we need to attract companies or individuals to do that. “The point is to give a very talented young man an opportunity to progress in the game, when he may otherwise not have had the chance.” The extensive coaching programme that the scholarship offers is £300 a month. And despite an extremely supportive family, their budget for Luke’s golf will not stretch that far. Luke hopes to embark on a twoyear elite coaching programme, with a fully comprehensive curriculum,
weekly homework, four two-hour golfing sessions a month and access to Watts’ experience and coaching techniques. He said: “If I was able to attend the Youth Academy scholarship, it would definitely help my game. I am at a barrier where I can’t really get any lower on my handicap. The scholarship would mean I could progress and take my game to the next level and beyond. “Carl’s great. He’s friendly, knows what he’s talking about and has played the game for ages. His help will hopefully really benefit me.” Watts has already overseen a number of other successes. He coaches Sussex U12 champion Jamie Dart and has charted the progress of UK U9 champion Jack Holmwood plus county players Gregor Macintosh, Joe White and James Holden. The junior team have reached the prestigious John Bury final, which will be held in November. Watts added: “I arrived here in June last year and there was no one really taking hold of the junior section. We started putting things into place around July and it’s really progressed this year. “We have a very high-quality group of juniors. A lot of the lads here have half an eye on where this could potentially go, especially regarding a professional golf career. I’m trying to coach them, if you like, as semiprofessionals. “Luke is an excellent player and will hopefully really benefit from the scholarship programme, just so long as we can find the funds to support him.”
Broadbridge Heath U13 ran riot in the John Laker Memorial Cup, beating Walton Heath U13 23-0. The goals came from Jack Sizzey (six), Cameron McCracken (four), Joe Kirkham (three), Lewis Dobson (three), Matt Penfold (two), James Skipper, Joel Colbran, Jamie Corps, Mitchell Clark and Jordan Bell. Jake Legrange matched Sizzey’s feat by scoring six times as Royal United U16 beat Lingfield U16 10-0 in the Edwin Hill Cup. Ant Jupp (two), Zac Love and Alex Parsons got on the scoresheet too, while Stanley Rice and Harry Garman also impressed. Roffey Robins Wanderers U16 reached the quarter-finals of the same competition by outplaying Lower Beeding and Handcross Lions U16. Alex Taylor (two), Tom Barnes, Chris Nicholson, Sam Collins, Alex Holmes, Harry Hinchey and an own goal made it 8-0 to the rampant Robins. Elliott Stanbridge stayed alert to keep a clean sheet.
St Paul’s Panthers U15 saw red – twice – as Lower Beeding and Handcross Lions U15 roared to victory in the Fred Sparks Cup. Basketball Holbrook Allstars Ladies began their Sussex League season with a 47-23 win over Brighton Phoenix at the Holbrook Club. A low-scoring first half ended 1313, but the third period was more entertaining as the teams traded baskets. Forward Kirsty Batchelor imposed herself under the boards, ably supported by Jenny Webb shooting from outside. The Allstars dominated the fourth quarter, winning it 17-3. Ana Sztancs and Sarah Moloney showed excellent ball handling, while 13-year-old Haylee Miller made an impressive debut. Horsham Hawks U14 took positives despite losing 89-31 in a tough away match against the Crawley Cagers first team. Max Dodd top scored with eight points, while Ola Edgal and Haylee Miller scored six each and Jonathan Walsh chipped in with five. Coach Nick Probin was pleased to see the team respond well after an initial onslaught, competing to the end with every player giving their all.

Roffey Robins Wanderers U16 celebrate
Aaron Pyzer was Lions’ player of the match. Chesworth Rovers U11 won 12-0 at Greenway U11 in the Heron Way Cup. The home side fought doggedly all the way and showed some nice touches, but Chesworth were simply too strong. Top scorer Jack Frankland scored five, with Henry Browning netting four and Jed Ridsdale-Hooper, Caleb Walker and Benjy Collins adding the others. Forest U10 played two hardfought matches against West Hove Dynamos U10, winning 1-0 and drawing 1-1. Forest scored late in the first match when Harry Huddlestone’s pass enabled Jamie Atkins to smash home. Samuel Smith made two very good saves. Samuel Shoubridge scored with a lob in the second match, but Dynamos levelled at the death. Roffey Robins Rockets U9 are unbeaten in six matches after beating Southwater U9 5-0 and 9-0. George Powling scored a hat-trick in each game and Karney Mitchell hit three in the second.
Atlantis swimmers were involved in an exciting contest at the Medway Centre, Gillingham. The final points totals were Black Lion 208, Atlantis 207, Crawley 196, East Grinstead 152, Beckenham B 147 and Dartford 128. Twelve Atlantis swimmers made their NASL competitive debuts – Matt Lambourne, Toby Van Der Hut, Oliver Giles, Max Dillon, Chris Lambourne, Dan Jones, Joe Widdowson, Lauren Pedel, Gemma Cumber, Lily Cherriman, Lily David and Francesca Giles. None of them were overawed by the occasion and all acquitted themselves admirably. Deputy head coach Andy Lobley said: “The team spirit was absolutely fantastic. All of the team swam with such heart and for each other.”
Motor Sport West Chiltington’s Kieran Vernon will race at Silverstone in the final weekend of the 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup. After qualifying at 12.05pm tomorrow (Saturday), the two races are scheduled to start at 12.25pm and 3.45pm on Sunday. Both will be shown live on ITV4. This month’s Horsham Riders trial took place on a very dry and dusty course at Northlands, near Horsham. The very hot weather made riding difficult.
