Horsham District Council is on the brink of sensationally scrapping plans for new homes in Southwater and Billingshurst.

Cllr Robert Nye, leader of the council, is recommending the council abandons the so-called interim statement approach, which could have paved the way for 500

homes in each village.

The council this year consulted on possible options to meet the short-term housing needs of the district.

Its Draft Interim Statement: Managing Development in Horsham District set out three options: • Option One: No planned growth. Responding to applications as they are submitted.

• Option Two: Limited planned growth.

About 250 homes at both Billingshurst and Southwater.

• Option Three: Notably planned growth.

About 500 homes at both Billingshurst and Southwater.

A council meeting on June 14 considered comments received during the consultation.

Councillors recognised there was some support for planned growth, with a need to meet previous agreed commitments in the district plan, meet the requirements of the South East Plan, address local housing needs and enable a positive economic future.

Campaigner, 77, held in Israel A retired nurse from West Chiltington is back home after being arrested and detained in Israel.

Audrey Gray was one of 12 people detained by Israeli forces on Friday last week for trying to visit Bethlehem in the West Bank.

They were taken to Bir el-Sabah prison in southern Israel, where the 77-year-old reportedly went on hunger strike.

Speaking before her return on Tuesday night, the Methodist preacher said she went “to stand alongside Palestinians and Israelis whose lives are severely restricted by the 43-year Israeli occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem”.

Man wanted over indecency with boy Detectives want to question this man about two acts of indecency with a 15-year-old boy in Horsham.

The incidents are alleged to have taken place in a car park at Sainsbury’s, Worthing Road, at about 4.30pm on Wednesday, May 18, and in public toilets at Lower Tanbridge Way, at about 4.20pm the next day.

Det Sgt Alli Hughes, of West Sussex CID, told The Resident: “The CCTV photo shows the man entering

Sainsbury’s in the town centre.

“The image of his face is somewhat blurred, but his build and type of clothing are quite distinctive and we hope local people will be able to help us identify him.”

The man is white and of chubby build. He was softly spoken with a broad accent, told the boy he was a 35-year-old called James and was smoking Stirling cigarettes.

He was wearing a black suit on the

day of the first incident, but light blue jeans, a checked red and blue shirt and brown soft leather shoes on the second day.

Dramatic change in housing policy Continued from Page 1 The council says “every effort was made to consult the wider communities of these settlements”, including sending leaflets to more than 7,000 households in the potentially affected parishes.

The overriding view from those people who responded from both Billingshurst and Southwater was that Horsham District Council should not plan for growth in these villages.

They supported Option One: No planned growth.

If this approach was followed, planning applications would be dealt with on an ad hoc basis.

This would include applications for about 500 homes at both Billingshurst and Southwater, which developers have been discussing with these communities, plus other applications which may be received across the district.

At the district council meeting in June, concerns were raised that single interest groups may have had a disproportionate effect on the outcome of the consultation. The level of response to planned growth was

similar in both settlements.

Cllr Nye said on Wednesday: “In principle, I and the council as a whole do not support the idea of unplanned development because of the risks of more development than that proposed in the council’s draft interim statement, the distinct possibility of mediocre housing design and more limited community facilities.

“However, in accordance with the government’s wish to see greater local involvement in decision-making, I have personally undertaken to support the views of the residents.

“I share concerns that a vocal minority may have had a disproportionate effect on the result of the consultation.

“This said, it is a fact that this whole subject has been extensively covered in public over many months and the council has done all it can to alert residents to the dangers of unplanned development.

“It is clear that a majority of those who responded wished for unplanned growth. I can only assume that the residents who did not respond to our

consultation have no strong preference one way or the other.

“I am therefore recommending that the council abandons the interim statement approach and instead moves forward with planning alternatives for the medium to long term.”

Cllr Nye will make recommendations on the way forward at a council Cabinet meeting next Thursday, July 21. A final decision will be made by all members of the council in September.

Speaking just before Cllr Nye’s comments, Keep Southwater Green (KSG) spokesman Ian Thwaites told The Resident: “We have written to all the district councillors and the chief executive at Horsham District Council. We want to ensure that the facts are properly appreciated.

“At a recent meeting, various councillors made comments which were either untrue or misrepresented the arguments that both communities have presented in opposition to the proposed development.

“There can be no justification for doubting the significance of the responses of the people of Southwater.

“They have been asked four times

in the last two years what they wanted and their reply has been perfectly clear and consistent. They do not want further large-scale development in the village. There can be no question about this statement.

“KSG has never at any time said they were in favour specifically of unplanned development. We have equally never argued against all development but are simply and honestly opposed to further large-scale development in Southwater.

“We consider such development to be unsustainable – as do the parish council – and grossly damaging to the character and the very soul of the village.

“It further, and indefensibly, compromises the viability of Great House Farm. This has been tenanted and well farmed to the great benefit of the village and the wider community by the Charman family for nearly 200 years.

“They want to continue to farm it, but any loss of land will render it uneconomical.

“It is totally wrong to say that in voting for Option One – what Horsham District Council, not us, called unplanned development – we showed a lack of understanding of the situation, were ill informed and were exposing the district as a whole to the risk of chaotic piecemeal development.

“It is untrue to say that individual development proposals do not provide money for infrastructure improvements. Section 106 money is provided on a fixed scale by all developments. Control can easily be retained through the planning system.

“Nobody, the developer or strategic planning at Horsham included, seriously contends that once some building is approved in this area it will be possible to prevent further large housing numbers following.

“We have tried to obtain guarantees

which would have given us confidence that this would not be the inevitable consequence of accepting some limited development. No such guarantee has ever been forthcoming.”

Before Cllr Nye’s comments, Billingshurst Parish Council said it would continue to resist the further expansion of Billingshurst until it was presented with: • A convincing argument that addresses all of its original objections.

• A realistic demonstration of the ability of large-scale housing development in Billingshurst to stimulate significant economic growth in the district.

• Evidence of a commitment by Horsham District Council to stimulate development in the ‘areas of opportunity’ east of both Horsham and Crawley.

• Details of a credible, fully-funded investment programme, necessary to enable the development to be occupied and its impact on local transportation, utility and community infrastructure to be mitigated.

• Details of the funding available for additional community infrastructure through the New Homes Bonus and Community Infrastructure Levy.

A statement by Billingshurst Parish Council said: “The parish council urges each and every parishioner to make sure that our elected representatives are in no doubt whatsoever about all of our concerns.”

Fun for all the family at Sparks in the Park

Fire concern A councillor has expressed concern about plans to merge the fire services of West Sussex, East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.

West Sussex County Council and East Sussex Fire Authority started a 12-week public consultation yesterday (Thursday) on the proposed merger of West Sussex Fire and Rescue with its counterpart next door.

County councillor Derek Deedman (Lib Dem, Bramber Castle) said: “My main concern is the lack of democratic accountability which could result from such a merger.

“One of the reasons the Conservatives opposed the creation of the South Downs National Park was the claim that it would not be directly democratically accountable – yet they seem poised to create such a body.

“County councillors are directly responsible to the community for the fire and rescue services in the county.

“If this proposal goes through it appears they will be representing the council, not directly the local community.

“If the proposed merger is agreed it should provide for direct elections using a fair voting system so that it will be directly accountable to the voters.”

Horsham will play its part in the countdown to the 2012 Olympics when Sparks in the Park returns to the town.

The free extravaganza in Horsham Park will take place next Sunday, July 24 (midday to 5pm), as part of the nationwide Open Weekend London 2012 celebrations.

Horsham Leisure Link is working with local sports clubs to offer a wide range of sports for people to try, including baseball, basketball, football, karate, stoolball, table tennis, tennis, tri-golf and urban rebounding.

Horsham Park Bowls Club will

offer an open day.

All activities will be free of charge, with coaches on hand to help and encourage people to give it a go.

Other free attractions include live music, dance, comedy entertainers, funfair rides, inflatable fun and an active communities zone.

You are also invited to take part in creative workshops, circus skills, colourful carnival flag-making and samba music, culminating in a spectacular carnival parade from 4pm.

Ringo, the Horsham District 2012 mascot, will be on hand to help cheer along the crowds.

The Weald’s walk Every student and teacher at The Weald School, Billingshurst, will today (Friday) walk 10 miles from Pulborough to Billingshurst.

The sponsored event is in aid of the Kenyan school rebuilding programme, run by charity Classrooms for Kenya.

A spokesman for the project said: “This walk is possible due to the help of our sponsors, Southern Railway, who will be transporting 1,000 people to the start point in Pulborough free of charge, and Edgars Coolwater, who will be supplying drinking water to all those taking part.

“Pupils in West Sussex attend wellequipped schools with safe buildings, but it’s a different story in Kenya.

“The Kenyan government pays for teachers, but not school buildings, so it’s up to local communities to build their own schools if they want their children to receive an education.

“That’s a big problem for the poorest communities, where parents may have to choose between feeding their children or providing them with an education.”

... and a competitive edge Centrepiece of the sporting day at Sparks in the Park will be the new Set4Success Youth Sports Challenge.

Teams of elite athletes, representing each the district’s secondary schools, will compete in a gruelling series of challenges including basketball, batak (reaction machine), bleep test, football goalscoring accuracy, speed biking and squat thrusts.

The competition will be similar to the BBC’s old Superstars programme and include categories for U13 boys, U13 girls, U15 boys and U15 girls.

The top team in each category will win a trophy and £200 for their school, to be spent on sports equipment. Winners and runners-up will each receive medals and certificates.

Compered by children’s TV presenter Dave Benson Phillips, the Youth Sports Challenge officially launches the Set4Success fund to help support sporting champions of the future.

Eight sportspeople aged between 13 and 17 received Set4Success financial awards from Karen Pickering MBE, the multiple gold medallist swimmer, at The Capitol in May. Seven of the eight live in Horsham district and attend school or college here – volleyball player Elliott Allison, rugby union player Chris Bond, athlete Jade Brewster, baseball ace Jared Cox, badminton player David King, cyclist Tom Laker and karate champion Ryan Morter.

Diver Lauren Grinstead lives in Chichester but attends The Weald School, Billingshurst.

Set4Success will create and manage dedicated funds to encourage and support young sportsmen and women as they work towards achieving their goals.

Led by the Rotary Club of Horsham in partnership with local schools, the scheme is supported by Horsham District Council, DC Leisure, SportsAid and local sports organisations

and businesses.

The scheme’s first fund will support young sportspeople in the district who have been recognised by their sport’s governing body but are not yet at the level where they are financed by Lottery funding.

The aim is to provide them with £1,000 per year through SportsAid, a charity which will identify young people who qualify for support and live in the district.

A second fund is being created to provide financial support to young children who are recognised as excelling in their chosen sport but who may otherwise give up due to a lack of money.

Schools, businesses, sports clubs, social clubs and other bodies across the district will be encouraged to organise simple fundraising activities, such as dress-down days and collections.

In conjunction with SportsAid, Set4Success beneficiaries will be expected to visit donors and talk about their sport, motivation, success and goals, helping motivate other youngsters to take part in sports.

SportsAid can arrange for highprofile sports personalities to attend fund-related community events.

There is a charge for this, taken from the fund, but it is much less than would normally be expected.

Sporting double Young people aged 14 to 25 can take part in archery sessions at The Forest School from 6.30pm to 8pm on Fridays from July 22 to September 9. All equipment will be provided.

A mountain bike course on Wednesday evenings will start on July 27.

Meeting at The Forest School, the group will take on eight challenging routes that connect to the town, including Leechpool Woods, Owlbeech Woods, Chesworth Farm and the Southwater section of the Downs Link.

Thirty visitors to Horsham’s Hills Cemetery were able to enjoy the surrounds on a 45-minute guided walk.

Horsham District Council says the cemetery, just off the Guildford Road, has developed into a hidden jewel which many people know little about.

Staff from the council’s parks and cemeteries teams guided visitors around the site, pointing out many features and sharing history of the area.

A similar tour is planned next year on a Summer weekend so working people can attend.

Data move welcomed MEP Sharon Bowles has welcomed the European Commission’s proposed changes to roaming mobile phone charges, with new price caps for data downloads.

Under the proposals, surfing the internet or receiving emails while abroad would cost no more than 81p per megabyte from July 2012, falling to about 40p by 2014, compared with an average of £1.80 today.

Ms Bowles, who represents Horsham district in the European Parliament, said: “Operators should not be allowed to charge through the roof for phone calls made or received abroad.

“The European Union is not without its critics, but a cap on exorbitant roaming fees will be seen as a welcome step by all.

“Networks have collected billions of Euros in roaming charges. Thankfully the Commission’s proposed regulation will put a stop to that.”

A cake would have been sufficient Philip Ayerst got a birthday present with a difference when a car careered into the garage of his house.

The dramatic incident involving a Honda Civic happened in Comptons Lane, on the corner of Highlands Road, Horsham, about an hour into Mr Ayerst’s 55th birthday on Tuesday.

He told The Resident: “At about 1am I was awoken by a screeching of brakes and a loud bang.

“The car hit the kerb and a lamp post, went through a garden wall and crashed into the garage.

“When I looked out of the window, there was a young male. But by the time I got out he had legged it.

“One o’clock in the morning, your birthday present is in the garage. It would have been easier to use the

garage door rather than go through the wall!”

Mr Ayerst, wife Lyn and daughter Rachael, 24, were in the house at the time, but none of them were near the garage.

Mr Ayerst, who is helping co-ordinate London transport for the 2012 Olympics, added: “It may well be that we have to demolish the garage. Fortunately my daughter’s car was in the drive and the other car just missed it.”

Nick Essex, 25, of Macleod Road, said: “I heard an almighty bang. It sounded like a mixture of a crash and an explosion and woke everyone up.”

A 24-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and failing to stop.

Air Ambulance boost Laura Fitch, 19, of Farhalls Crescent, Horsham, raised at least £340 for Sussex Air Ambulance by completing the Asics London 10k Run. The 19-year-old, who works for Johnson’s Dry Cleaners in Horsham, said: “After talking to a member of Air Ambulance last year, I was mortified to find out they do not receive any government or Lottery funding.

“There was a wonderful parade before the start of the run and so many charities being supported.

“I was quite far back from the start line, so much so when I got there the clock was showing 30 minutes. I managed to finish my run in 51 minutes, just one minute down from my practice runs.”

Collyer’s media students launched a DVD, LINks Looks at Stroke, at County Hall North in Horsham.

The event was hosted by West Sussex Local Involvement Network (LINk) in partnership with the Stroke Association.

The premiere of the DVD was displayed on a big screen in front of an audience of health professionals, support groups, stroke survivors and members of the public. Copies were quickly snapped up by local groups and organisations.

Jonathan Nunns, head of media studies at the college, said: “LINk are brilliant to work with and this is a smashing project for a superb cause.

“The DVD has high production value, demonstrated by the fact that it is being used across the region.”

Principal Jackie Johnston said: “Young people often get a bad press for a perceived lack of social conscience, so we’re delighted that these talented students are helping to dispel that myth. They are a credit to the media department, Collyer’s and Horsham.”

Why young Jack’s in the news

A budding TV presenter from Tanbridge House School spent the afternoon with CBBC Newsround as part of his Ambassadors experience.

Jack Edwards was shown through the main Newsround studio, at BBC TV Centre in London, just before presenter Ore Oduba went live.

Jack, 12, watched the show from the production gallery before heading to the Newsround Green Room to interview Ore. He asked the presenter about qualifications and getting into the industry. Ore said subjects such as English were helpful, but not as important as a fantastic show reel, experience, personality and determination.

Bulletin studio and, taking note of Ore’s tips, impressed a member of the production team with his enthusiastic reading, timing and presenting skills.

Before leaving the iconic television studio, Jack was presented with a Newsround goody bag, took pictures as memories of his time there and visited the BBC shop.

Jack said: “This has been a fantastic experience. I have really enjoyed my

time at Newsround and seeing how the show is made.

“My favourite parts were interviewing Ore and getting to read my own Newsround bulletin. I felt like an actual television presenter.

“Thank you to everyone at Newsround and to Ore for taking the time to chat with me. This is an experience I will never forget and I can’t wait to start working on making my dream job a reality.”

News in Brief On the tee, again Golfers at West Sussex Golf Club, Pulborough, raised more than £3,000 for a community first responder scheme by completing a 15-hour, 100-hole round.

Dave Nelson, team leader for CHART, said: “The achievement of these guys is outstanding. I can hardly manage a round at a pitch and putt course, but seeing the guys tee off into the mist at 4.15am was amazing.

“We are very pleased to have been nominated for the captain’s charity for this year.”

Community first responders are trained to attend certain medical emergencies, such as patients with chest pains or breathing difficulties or those who have suffered a cardiac arrest.

Responders are always supported by an ambulance but, because they live or work locally, they may be the first to reach a patient and administer potentially life-saving treatment.

CHART is liaising with responder teams in Storrington and Billingshurst to look for other potential sites that could be funded via donations from the golf club.

Two charged Two men have been charged after a man was attacked in Roffey.

A 20-year-old man was walking in Crawley Road shortly after 11.30pm on Wednesday when he was assaulted by two men. Police attended and discharged a spray to restrain one of the men.

Kieren Blunden, 25, of no fixed address, and Benito Salvia, 22, of South Holmes Road, Horsham, have been charged with attempted robbery, assault and assaulting a police officer and will appear before Crawley magistrates on July 28.

The attacked man was treated at Crawley Hospital for a cut to his head.

He has since been released.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Det Con Matt Wilson on 0845 6070999, quoting serial 1956 of July 13.

Who’s next for attack?

I am a person of 72 who has been an employee in the private sector for 54 years and I am still working full time.

I therefore have little or no patience with the public sector strikers, as you will understand from the following.

Discussions about their pension changes are still ongoing. Whatever the outcome, the actual changes will not take place for some time.

We workers in the private sector were allowed no discussions, given no advanced warning and the changes were immediate when Gordon Brown, the then Chancellor, decided to decimate private pensions to such a degree that I am forced to work still and will have to do so until I become unfit enough to carry on.

Under the circumstances brought about by the previous government, with their disastrous handling of the economy, more people of my age need to continue to work just to have a life a bit better than just “making ends meet”.

I am more fortunate than a lot of folk my age as I am fit enough to continue working at a job I can do and in fact enjoy.

Many others are far from as lucky and cannot make the extra money.

The money which I am still able to earn, though not a great deal, is taxed heavily and a lot of that tax goes to the public service workers’ undeserved and feather-bedded pension pots.

The outrageous idea they have that they are being treated unfairly is beyond belief – except that they are led by union bosses who live in their union-supplied houses, are on vast salaries and dine at restaurants of which I can only dream.

It is the union leaders, to whom these public sector workers willingly pay subscriptions, that are the ones treating their members unfairly, not private sector workers or this government.

Carla Insull has not quite got her facts right (The Resident, July 8).

The MPs that debated about animals in circus did vote for a ban, but it is still not government policy. The government is consulting DEFRA. I would advise people who support activities like the Horse of the Year Show, Hickstead, the South of England Show, horse racing, greyhound racing, gymkhanas, dog shows, cat shows and even bird shows to write to the Prime Minister or your MP to ask them to vote in favour of circus with animals when it is next debated.

You and your special interest may be next in line for attack. You have been warned!

Holbrook Rescue mission I have just come back from holiday on the Island of Zakynthos in Greece. It is a lovely place, but I was saddened to see so many stray cats and dogs there.

Like most tourists, I helped by giving food daily. I am trying to get two dogs there rescued to eventually have a proper home.

A volunteer from Holbrook Animal Rescue goes out every October to collect a number of stray dogs in her van and rehomes them.

Zakynthos Animal Rescue Fund fosters these dogs, awaiting her arrival. When foster homes are full, kennels are used. All this costs money.

Come October, when the tourist season ends and the hotels close, dogs and cats could face death by starvation, being shot, hung, or dying in agony from poisoning.

Please, readers, will you help me by donating anything you can to these charities so that at least two of these stray dogs can get a better life?

How youngsters benefited from a shared experience Emma Eatwell Millais School

Forty students from Millais School and 40 from The Forest School met in the Millais School Hall for the Stock Market Challenge, organised by the Education Business Partnership.

Each school was split into 10 teams of four and every person had a different role.

One of the team looked at the news to see how it would affect share values, another bought and sold shares, a third recorded the transactions and the other recorded the amount of shares owned.

The day was split into five parts, which represented five days in the stock market.

A screen in the hall showed a list of nine companies. Beside each company name was the current price of a share and the previous price of a share, whether it had increased or decreased and the percentage change.

The challenge was to buy and sell shares from these companies and to gain the most money. We were initially given ‘£15,000’ to invest and by the end of the day everyone had more than doubled their money.

Professional businessmen and women gave us an insight into the working world and helped us to understand the stock market.

Hannah Bowdery, from Millais, said: “They made us see that hanging on to money doesn’t make it rise and investing sensibly can really pay off.”

Round one started with Monday’s stock market and everyone was a little timid to spend their money at first.

Our teams decided to invest in one share from a couple of companies!

But as the day went on and everyone gained more confidence, the amount of shares bought increased.

As you might imagine, the Forest boys were a little more daring with their money than the girls and one of their teams, Blue Waffle, took first place.

The top Millais team was HALA. Organisers of the event said Millais students continuously improved, though this was not enough to beat Forest to first place.

Everyone seemed to really enjoy the buzz of the day. It was good for

the two schools to take part in something together and the day really let us use our skills of teamwork and communication.

Many of us went into the room not knowing what a share was, but we came out with a lot more knowledge, confidence and understanding. We were given a good insight into the stock market.

GEOPHYSICAL SEISMIC SURVEY Tesla-IMC International LTD (Tesla-IMC) has been commissioned by CELTIQUE ENERGIE WEALD LTD to undertake geophysical surveying operations along a network of individual traverse lines falling within the following parishes: Loxwood, Plaistow & Ifold, Wisborough Green, Pulborough, West Chiltington, Thakeham, Shipley, Cowfold, Southwater, Slinfold, West Grinstead, Nuthurst, North Horsham, Rudgwick, Rusper, Warnham, Itchingfield, Colgate, Billinghurst, Broadbridge Heath, Churt, Dockenfield, Frensham, Thursley, Capel, Charlwood Newdigate, Ockley and Haslemere Town Council.

The aim of the survey is to identify and map subsurface geological structure, this being an essential component in Celtique’s ongoing evaluation of the area for potential hydrocarbon (oil and gas) reserves. Works will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Petroleum Act 1998 under licence PEDL 231, 234 and 243 as issued to Celtique by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, and will additionally comply with Part 22 Class B of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995.

Surveying activity will be conducted predominantly on public highway where safe operating distances from houses and underground utilities can be achieved. This will initially involve a convoy of specialist Vibrator tractor units traversing along a series of pre-determined lines. An extensive cable network will then be positioned along the ground surface.

Where there is a need for cables to cross public highway, footpath and/or driveway entrance, each cable will be placed in protective rubber matting thus allowing unhindered vehicular and pedestrian access. Cables can be safely driven over and pose no danger if touched. Please expect individual cables to be left in position for potentially 3 to 5 days before being retrieved.

Full surveying operations will commence on or shortly after the 18th July for a period of 35 to 40 days, operations will be conducted on a seven day a week basis between 7.30am and 1800.

TESLA would kindly ask for your patience and co-operation during the survey, and apologises in advance for any inconvenience these works might caused. All properties fronting and falling adjacent to each traverse line will receive an information leaflet prior to cable laying operations commencing. Close daily liaison will be maintained throughout the survey with the County Council, Police, and owners and occupiers affected.

£6k for New Horizons Appeal The New Horizons Appeal, in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice, is £6,200 better off after a golf challenge and auction lunch at Slinfold Golf and Country Club.

Josh Hemsley (captain), Richard Hemsley, Tom Patterson and Edward Jackson successfully defended Linda’s Trophy, named after Frank Catlow’s late wife.

Appeal chairman Liz Kitchen said: “The day was a great success. The play was smooth with no hold up, which was very good considering there were 90 players.

“The barbecue was delicious and

the whole programme ran to time thanks to the hard work of Gareth and Jo Brown and Frank Catlow.

“Everyone went away with a smile and said they would be back next year.”

Youths dicing with death on rail track British Transport Police (BTP) officers have issued a warning to youths in Littlehaven who continue to trespass on the railway.

Last week saw youths playing close to the line and putting their lives at risk.

Insp Gary Ancell said: “At about 4.30pm on Tuesday, July 5, we received a report from a passing train driver who said he had seen a group of youths run in front of his train just moments before it travelled through the crossing.

“Although this may seem like fun to those who continue to play, what they don’t realise are the dangerous implications.

“Behaviour such as this is incredibly risky and can result in dire consequences. The railway is an extremely dangerous environment that should never be considered as somewhere to hang out.

“Our main concern is the safety of youngsters, but we will also do everything in our power to prosecute anyone caught deliberately obstructing the railway or trespassing on the tracks and endangering people’s safety, with the maximum penalty being life imprisonment.

“Trains can’t swerve and they can’t stop suddenly. The message we are sending to youngsters is simple – stay safe and stay out of trouble.”

Welcome the church of US sport More than a dozen churchgoers will travel from the United States to teach at an American Sports Camp in Horsham.

The sports leaders, aged 20-40, are from Brookwood Baptist Church in Oklahoma, which was attended by fellow American Elaine Rierson before she moved to Horsham.

Youngsters aged 11-14 will be able to try baseball, basketball, hip-hop dance and interpretive dance at Millais School from July 25 to July 29.

The visitors are paying for their air fares, hotel bills and so on and will leave equipment in Horsham. Brighton Road Baptist Church, Horsham, is covering the costs of printing flyers

and hiring facilities.

The idea evolved from mums chatting in Horsham Park last year. Mrs Rierson told her friends that many youngsters went to camps in the US and was surprised there was little or nothing similar here.

A t-shirt, hot dogs and nachos night and games in the park on the Thursday evening are included within the £20 total cost.

One of the American sports leaders, Jimmie, said: “In the US it is very common to have youth camps during the Summer holidays.

“Through conversations with friends at our local church, we thought it would be a great opportunity to

travel and get to spend time with people where they live. At the same time we could do a sports camp.

“Those conversations are soon becoming a reality. We have been so blessed, we want to be a blessing to others. The local church in Horsham is helping us do that.

Youngsters take to the airwaves Sam Rose The Weald School

Radio Weald, from The Weald School, will broadcast to the local community from Monday to Friday next week, July 18-23.

It will include a wide range of shows on 87.7FM and www. radioweald.co.uk from 9am to 3pm each day.

The radio station is run by students who have been broadcasting for several years.

They get plenty of practise broadcasting throughout the year but really want to get the local community involved for their final week of term.

Programmes will include local news, interviews with local people and the music show featuring Steve Wilson, of Match of the Day fame.

Transmitting from Billingshurst, Radio Weald expects people to be able to tune in from further afield, perhaps as far away as west Horsham and Pulborough.

The students are looking forward to broadcasting and have been working hard preparing.

Flower power and more at St John’s “A veritable feast for the senses” greeted visitors to St John the Evangelist RC Church, Horsham, as the parish pulled out all the stops for its Arts and Flower Festival.

Saintly Stories. The fragrant arrangements took as their inspiration the lives and works of Saints from Sussex and beyond.

An arts and crafts exhibition in the church hall featured a rich and diverse display of paintings, sculpture, photography and crafts. Children produced a temporary exhibit called Living Stones.

Father Terry Martin, parish priest, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the way our festival went. It was a real celebration of our life together as a Catholic community and drew in many friends and neighbours to share in that celebration.

“The astounding floral displays, excellent music-making and superb craft and arts exhibition were as good as you’d find in any concert hall or professional gallery.

“Add to that our delicious lunches, teas and refreshments and it all came together for a superb weekend, delighting in God’s goodness to us all.”

Highlights included Bishop Kieran Conry celebrating Mass to mark the

official opening of the festival.

The festival also featured St John’s Gospel Choir, St John’s School Choir, Claire O’Brien on classical flute, Brian McDonagh on classical guitar and an organ recital by Bernard Smith.

Youngsters from St Wilfrid’s School performed songs from Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat. The Crescendudes, the school’s barbershop ensemble, also performed.

A Sunday Showcase in the courtyard featured music and drama, including The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) and the Filippino Community Choir.

More than £3000 was raised for two local causes – ARK and the parish’s World Youth Day Fund.

ARK is a new charity which helps those seeking a way forward from issues such as homelessness, addiction and poverty.

The youth fund will help young St John’s parishioners visit Madrid next month, when they will gather with more than a million others to celebrate and learn about their faith.

By limiting the number of children who attend Greenway Nursery to 45 at any one session, each one can receive the care and attention they need and are even allocated to a key worker, who will look after them throughout their time at the nursery.

Safety is of paramount importance to the nursery, which is set within the grounds of Greenway School’s secure site. Children also benefit from an enclosed garden, ensuring that they are monitored and kept from harm even while playing outside.

In the garden there is new apparatus including a timber Wendy House, climbing frame and slide, which encourages children to be more active.

Under the management of Michelle Leggett who has been with the nursery for nine years, parents can be sure their children are in the best possible care.

Sussex Bootcamps and people who attend its training sessions in Horsham have raised over £1,000 for charity.

The group of 70 people has been making donations throughout the six-week Best Body Challenge programme, which takes place on a Saturday morning.

The sessions are designed to improve the lives of those who take part, as well as young people who benefit from the Rocking Horse Children’s charity.

The organisation aims to make life

better for sick children in Sussex and Surrey.

At the bootcamps, participants were measured and weighed on week one and again at the end of the programme to see how much progress they had made.

In addition to the charity donations, there was another motivation for anyone taking part. One lucky member had the opportunity to win an iPad 2 by telling the team that runs the sessions how it changed their life in a written testimonial.

Emily Orsbourne won the prize and said: “I was a member of a gym but didn’t feel I was getting results; my clothes became tighter and my mood went down. When I heard about the challenge, I knew it was

time for me to take charge of my life.

“I have really loved the past few weeks. I have made some positive changes along the way without any sacrifice. I feel like anything is possible!”

Ben Davis is a co-owner of Sussex Bootcamps and said: “One of our aims has always been to help people improve their lives through our fitness sessions. We are really proud to have been able to do that by motivating people to be healthy and lose weight, and at the same time donating muchneeded money to a worthy cause.

Horsham Markets are on East Street this weekend Horsham Markets, which are usually held on Friday and Saturday in The Carfax are moving to East Street this week, to make room for FrenchFest.

Horsham’s local produce market will also be celebrating National Cherry Day today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday).

Over the last 50 years, the UK has lost 90% of its cherry orchards and imports 95% of the fruit. However there are two local cherry producers on the Horsham market that will be setting up stalls this weekend.

In addition to cherries, there will be plenty of other English produce available on East Street, with a range of fresh bread, fish, veg, Sussex cheeses, rare breed burgers, beautiful jewellery, delicious quiches, cakes,

interesting arts and crafts and even Horsham’s very own chocolatier.

The English traders will also be challenging the French at their own game of Boules.

This will be a great ‘opportunity for our traders to show off what they do best ’

The traditional game between the two markets will take place in Market Square on Friday evening. Market Manager PJ Aldred said: “This Friday and Saturday will be a great opportunity for our traders to show off what they do best - but I have to admit we’re not overly confident we will win the Boules!”

New highways team gets to work A new West Sussex highways maintenance and improvement contract, which could save between £10 and £18 million over the next five years, has been launched.

Balfour Beatty is now working with the County Council under the name ‘West Sussex Highways’ to look after roads and footways and carry out improvement schemes.

The contract will be managed from Horsham with the creation of a new ‘highways hub’ based at County Hall North, where staff from the county council and Balfour Beatty

The existing Highway Area offices at Broadbridge Heath, Clapham and Oving will also continue to operate.

Pieter Montyn, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The new five-year contract will not only deliver efficiencies and savings, it will also provide an improved service which we hope will boost levels of customer satisfaction with our residents.”

Terry Woodhouse, managing director, local authority business, Balfour Beatty, said: “We are extremely

excited to be working in partnership with West Sussex County Council for the Highways Maintenance Contract.

“Balfour Beatty is dedicated to achieving the aims that the council has defined, in an effective, efficient, sustainable and customer focused highways service for the county.”

The contract will cover the majority of the County Council’s work in maintaining and improving the highway, with the exception of street lighting, traffic signal installation and maintenance and variable message signs.

When I started out in marketing 27 years ago, it was drilled into me that successful small businesses that go on to achieve the coveted status of becoming successful brands, don’t just focus on adding the small and stylish touches to their offering.

They start by getting the basics absolutely right. They constantly review their products and services and the way in which they are delivered to ensure they are more than fit for purpose; that they’re precisely what their target customers need and desire.

The owner, when showing us our room spent an inordinate amount of time telling us about the fresh milk in the fridge, not to mention the filtered

water and the complimentary fruit basket.

We were shown the earl grey tea bags, the choice of CDs and given a detailed account of the organic breakfast that would greet us in the morning.

All wonderful stuff, had it not been for the fact that the exceptionally cramped accommodation was most definitely a triumph of style over substance.

The bed (to put it mildly) had seen better days, with a mattress that was long past its sell by date. The curtains didn’t join in the middle and so we spent most of the night squinting as the glare from the streetlight invaded our room.

The portable television, which was several years old, was placed so high on the wall that it was impossible to watch in comfort. To add to this ignominy, the shower alternated between freezing cold and red hot. I considered upgrading to our car outside.

Reflecting on this experience, it was obvious that the B&B owner had focused on getting the small touches right to the detriment of ensuring that the basics were delivered to a high standard.

It’s a lesson all of us can learn from.

Stand in the shoes of your customers and look at the landscape through their eyes. Be critical. If the B&B owner had spent a night in this bedroom she would have arrived at the conclusion that change was most definitely in order and it wasn’t just about filtered water and fruit baskets!

Festival of Sound, the month-long music event, which takes place in September, has announced the charity it will support.

Money raised from the performances will go to Horsham 100 – a campaign run by Tanbridge House School, which is aiming to raise £100,000 for the Dame Vera Lynn Trust.

Festival of Sound kicks off on Sunday, September 4 and organiser Sharon Dow hopes that the event will be annual. The aim is to host 100 performances that will take place in Horsham town centre and in nearby villages, Broadbridge Heath, Southwater, Slinfold and Billingshurst.

Venues such as pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants and other retail outlets are all welcome to have bands play

on their premises.

On the launch day, 30 talented local bands are expected to play live in places such as the Bandstand, Piries Place, Market Square, The Forum and Shelley Fountain.

The event also coincides with the Big Nibble, a spectacular showcase of the finest local produce from across the Horsham District, with a free tasting trail around Horsham on the day.

There will also be a vintage Bus Rally travelling across Sussex to the Carfax, TVRs, Morgans and Aston Martins in East Street, plus street performers.

The music event in the town centre is free and everyone is welcome to come along, enjoy live and local music and support the Horsham 100 charity.

Dance craze becomes charity fundraiser The Holbrook Club donated its sports hall recently for a charity Zumbathon event run by Zumba Sussex, in Horsham.

Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance fitness workout that has become a craze everywhere. 130 people attended the event and together they raised around £800 for Chestnut Tree House and the QE11 School.

Sarah Broadley from Zumba Sussex said: “It has been a real privilege to raise money for them and I am overwhelmed by the fantastic support shown by all these people this evening.”

Nine instructors also joined in the Zumbathon, which lasted for an hour and a half. The class was followed by light refreshments and a Michael Buble tribute act.

Photography group opens exhibition A long-standing group of local photographers has opened a summer exhibition to showcase the work of its members at The Capitol A group of local photographers is currently having their work exhibited in the gallery at Horsham’s Capitol theatre.

Independent Photography is an informal group that was set up by Jill Staples from Bolney almost 20 years ago. The members meet regularly to share their work, talk about photography and hold workshops run by

Now some of the members are showing their work at The Capitol until September 5. The exhibition has been organised by Jeff Hutchinson and curated by Mick Williamson, head of the photography department at London Metropolitan University

Titled ‘Greetings from Ipse’, the display includes a range of work from 24 of the group’s members. Due to the volume of pictures, they had to be scaled down to the size of postcards.

As well as photography, there are also hand-made books, small sculptural pieces, waxwork and other photography-related objects on display.

Spiral-bound postcard catalogues of the exhibition are also for sale at the venue In one of the pieces, Jeff Hutchinson combines text and black and white images with his unusual take on two older Northern ladies discussing a new gallery or a neighbour.

While Josephine Evans, who created ‘Beautiful Sussex – Wish You Were Here’ has used the postcard theme to look at alternative views of the conventionally beautiful.

Tim Morris is showing some work from the Hebrides and stunning black and white ‘sandscapes’. And Michael Vogt displays his ‘In Ruins’ images, which are also on display at the Royal Academy Summer Show.

A thriving village on the Downs Link Southwater can be dated as far back as the Neoliths, 4500 BC. Evidence of this comes from finds at Jackrells Farm, Southwater where two arrow heads and three axes were found south of the river in Horsham.

Dinosaur bones were also found in the old brickyard. Other finds date back to 500 BC show the beginning of an organised trading society in and around Southwater and the Horsham District.

During the Roman Empire the Weald in which Southwater is situated began to produce iron. When the brickworks started there were many archaeological finds in Victorian times.

The first written references to Southwater date back to the Calendar of Patent Rolls in 1346 when it was known as “Suthwatre” but refers not to a village but an area of scattered farms – south of the water, which remained so until the late 20th Century.

The water in this instance is probably the River Arun which runs through Horsham, although the village also has water-courses leading to and from the River Adur.

Southwater lies just four miles south of Horsham in West Sussex and within the Parish are the hamlets of Christ’s Hospital, Newfoundout and Stammerham, all of which are thought to date back to medieval times and are on the path of old road systems.

The Downs Link runs right through Southwater giving walkers and cyclists easy asses to the village in particular Lintot Square where you

will find a variety of Shops, Pubs and Restaurants.

The downs link runs through Southwater Country Park which is a fantastic facility nestled in the village provided water sports for the whole family, as well as great walks through the Park.

There is a very popular café providing food and refreshment to take advantage of after a busy day on the lake.

Southwater Skate Park is also on the Downs link which is very popular with the local youths and attracts other skaters from far and wide.

Exploring the Downs Link route Linking the Surrey and West Sussex countryside What is the Downs Link?

It is a long distant, off road route, for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It links the North Downs in Surrey and the South Downs in West Sussex. Easily accessible from local access points and public transport, the route can be explored in shorter sections. In Surrey you can find the start of the Downs Link at St Martha’s Hill. Or, for a flatter route, join the Shalford Park cycle route from Guildford Town Centre, in easy reach of the station. This will link up with the Downs Link at Broadford Road, Shalford.

What are the Downs?

They are a range of hills...

The Downs Link is 37 miles (59km long), it follows an old railway line, so the route is mostly level. It was opened in 1984 by West Sussex County Council, Surrey County Council and also Waverley Borough Council. It also links two other long distance routes together the North Downs Way and the South Downs Way. As you travel along the Downs Link, you will pass through the beautiful ancient wooded countryside of Surrey and West Sussex.

Then further south you start to smell the sea air and the wooded landscape gives way to the

flat planes of the coast, where you will be greeted with the sound and sight of wading birds.

A Wealden Wonderland Visit the Downs Link and you will be part of a landscape that is around 25 million years old.

A large dome rose out of the sea and over millions of years has been washed away. All that remains is a large basin shape and you’re in it!

The North Downs on one side and the South Downs on the other side are the rims of this basin! This is the Wealden landscape.

As you travel along the Downs Link, you may notice the scenery changing, different shapes, different trees and a different feel.

This change is because of something beneath you. Underneath your feet is mud, but under the mud are rocks of different kinds.

In some places you will see sand stone, which was once the sea bed. In other places you will see chalk, the remains of prehistoric creatures.

And then there is the clay which in some places is over 300m thick!

If you look out over the Wealden wonderland maybe you will see the landscape change before your very eyes.

Should I choose a large chain or a smaller independent estate agent to sell my house in Horsham?

You should choose the best estate agent in the village or town wherever you live.

The best way to determine this is to ask neighbours who are selling about their experiences, check local agents websites for feedback comments and visit their offices to find out what sort of reception you get because this is how your potential buyers will be treated.

Large estate agent chains may tell you they have access to more buyers than smaller companies; which is undoubtedly true.

What they fail to mention is that the vast majority will be registered with their offices in other towns and villages.

It is of absolutely no interest to you if an agent has 200 buyers on their books looking to buy in Hampshire, Wales, or London. Buyers looking in Horsham will contact estate agents in Horsham, not Haslemere!

Also, with the huge rise in internet use many buyers simply keep an eye on the property websites and contact the agent marketing your house once it appears online so the online presentation and pro-activity in responding to enquiries is actually far more important.

I am buying a house with a mortgage, and everything has been going smoothly - until now. My solicitor tells me that the house I am buying is in a parish where there may be a liability to “contribute to any repairs of the chancel of the local church”. He asked the seller to pay for insurance against any future demands for money because of this, but the seller has refused.

The solicitor says my lender will demand that I get this insurance and that it will cost at least £100. I am not very happy. What has this church got to do with me, and why should I pay anything?

A

The law that covers chancel repair liability emanates from the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century and imposed personal liability for the upkeep of the chancels of parish churches. The church where you are buying must have been in existence at that time.

In many cases, however, the liability was commuted to tithes, which have since been redeemed or abolished, and many such parishes are no longer affected. In a recent case the courts confirmed that this law is still in force.

It is possible to carry out a search of the relevant records at the Record Office at Kew, but this can take months. The insurance you mention should cover you (and future owners) should the Parochial Church Council request any contributions.

If your solicitor is acting for your lender, as well as for you, he is required by them to carry out all usual and prudent searches and to ensure that insurance is in place to cover potential risks. It is generally accepted that this is such a risk. You should ask your solicitor to confirm exactly what the proposed policy will cover, and if a cheaper premium is available.

Maggs bids emotional farewell Matthew James Sport Editor

John Maggs has thanked Brighton and Hove Albion and the 1,100 fans who watched his testimonial match at Worthing on Wednesday.

The former Horsham manager, who left after 11 years at the end of the season, expects to make more than £8,000 from the game against Gus Poyet’s Seagulls.

He told The Resident: “I have a great deal of respect for Gus and Brighton and Hove Albion. Gus was true to his word by bringing a very strong squad.

“It wasn’t played in Horsham, which is sad really, but I appreciate the people from Horsham and Brighton who turned up.

“I’m really grateful to them and to all the sponsors and advertisers (including The Resident) who put a little bit in the programme and so on. Horsham FC presented me with a watch and I’m grateful for that too.

“I think I spoke to everyone – old friends, managers, coaches – and it was a really good night. The game

Maggs fielded most of last season’s since-departed squad in the first half and heroes of the 2007 FA Cup run in the second period.

Mark Zawadski kept Albion at bay with a series of fine saves before Maggs’ men took a shock lead through Carl Rook just after half time.

after 63 minutes and ‘Horsham’ led until the 74th minute before Toby Agdestein, Craig Noone and George Barker struck for the Championship club.

Maggs added: “Brighton controlled it in the first half, but our keeper was outstanding.

“The camaraderie in the dressing room was great. There was a lot

of banter, just like the FA Cup ties in 2007.

“I got quite emotional about it at times, but I started to relax in the second half. It was a good farewell to Horsham FC.” Maggs revealed he was recently offered a job by a Blue Square South club.

It would have included scouting and other involvement on the playing side, work on the ground and an ambassadorial role, but he turned it down due to the travelling time involved.

He intends to stay in football and is looking for a job closer to home.

With the excitement of a new stadium, I thought I would share with you the four grounds that have been home to Brighton and Hove Albion during my time as a supporter.

The Goldstone Ground, Hove, is where my passion for Albion was initiated by my dad, who took me to my first match in 1976 – in the season that Peter Ward scored 32 goals to become Albion’s record scorer and when Albion were promoted from Division 3.

In 1995 the Goldstone Ground was controversially sold to developers and fans told that the next season’s ‘home’ fixtures would take place in Portsmouth.

Two years later, after a bitter battle between the club’s owners and fans, the Goldstone hosted its last ever game. Albion departed with a 1-0 win against Doncaster Rovers.

Priestfield, the home of Gillingham rather than Portsmouth, hosted Albion’s ‘home’ games for the next two seasons. Not an ideal situation, not least because it required a 70-mile trip just to get there.

The distance proved too much for some and the fan base inevitably dwindled, but in those dark days everyone knew everyone else, the ardent supporters united and, as someone once said, we became a “band of brothers” (and sisters!)

With our (Dick) Knight in shining armour at the helm, we knew the club was safe but we needed to get back to the South coast as soon as possible.

Having fought so hard to wrestle the club away from those that would do it harm, the fans and management now had to convince the nimbys that Withdean would be a suitable temporary perch for the Seagulls.

It wasn’t easy, but finally permission was granted and in 1999 an old, rundown athletics ‘stadium’ became Albion’s third home in four years.

Many fans will look back at Withdean and only remember the bad times – sitting in pouring rain, miles from the pitch – but it allowed the club to consolidate and rebuild. Albion were promoted four times, including three titles, and relegated twice.

And then there was Bobby Zamora!

On April 30, Albion lost their final game at Withdean to Huddersfield Town, but it didn’t matter much.

Albion had already been crowned champions and many were already dreaming of the magnificent new American Express Community Stadium at Falmer.

On August 6, Albion will once again play Doncaster Rovers – this time at our new home, one we can be truly proud of. I for one can’t wait!

Jagota ton in Boro drama Nick Cousins Cricket

An unbeaten 110 by skipper Rohit Jagota, coupled with nail-biting last-over drama, saw Pulborough boost their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Sussex Premier League.

Victory was achieved by the narrowest of margins off the penultimate ball of this absorbing encounter at title-chasing Preston Nomads.

A good opening spell from pacemen Harvir Baidwan and Max Barson ensured Nomads’ innings got off to a sedate start, with both Stuart Faith and Alasdair Wilson struggling to dominate the opening period.

Once Wilson was out, trapped LBW off Baidwan for 10, Jeremy Green joined Faith and they gradually lifted Nomads’ run rate with the occasional boundary.

Barson was removed from the attack after a solid 12-over spell and his replacement Amit Suman dismissed Faith immediately, caught by Barson off what can only be described as a loosener.

Green and Robert Wakeford put on 109 to take the score to 169 before Wakeford was caught in the covers off Baidwan for 58.

Aaron Phillips was bowled by Baidwan for 15 and Michael Chadwick joined Green for the remainder of the innings as Nomads looked to secure maximum bonus points.

The declaration came as soon as they brought the total to 225, crucially after 57 overs, which gave Boro an extra over to chase than they might have expected.

Jagota and Will Howard opened up for the visitors and played positively against the occasionally hostile bowling of Carl Simon and Chadwick.

Simon, the league’s leading wicket taker, bowled throughout in a marathon spell and accounted for Howard (35) with the score on 62.

Tom Crump and Jagota built another important partnership before Crump was bowled by Simon for 24.

Remarkably, only number four Sachin Chaudhary also contributed double figures as Simon continued to cause trouble with pace and bounce.

Chaudhary (17) was bowled with the score on 142, Max Barson

chopped the ball onto his stumps for five and Will Langmead was caught behind for one, meaning Simon had taken the first five wickets.

But Jagota seemed unfazed by the regular change of partners, accumulating his runs at a steady rate to keep Boro in the chase.

Nomads introduced the spin of Stephen Rigg, who soon took the wickets of Paul Allen and Baidwan as both looked to hit out.

Rapidly running out partners – and having been reprieved by two failed catch attempts – all the attention was on Jagota to secure an unlikely win.

With the score on 205, Suman was bowled by Rigg with a ball that kept low. Three overs left, 21 runs needed.

Simon’s first ball of the 51st over was smashed over long-on by Jagota, but a single off the next left Shane West on strike.

He became Simon’s sixth victim, LBW off the fourth ball of the over, but Struan Cameron survived the last two deliveries to leave Jagota on strike. Two overs left, 14 runs required.

while Nomads skipper Kashif Ibrahim despatched all nine outfielders to the boundary.

Jagota brought up his ton by hitting the third ball over mid-off for a maximum, but he was fortunate to benefit from a third and final missed catch.

A wide and a single left the score on 220-9. One over remaining, five to win.

Simon provided Jagota with a final challenge and the first four deliveries were smashed towards the boundary, only to be calmly fielded and singles refused.

The fifth ball was slightly shorter.

Jagota swung and the ball sailed over the wide long-on boundary, to rapturous cheers and noisy acclaim from the Boro team and their travelling supporters.

As if Pulborough’s shock win was not enough, league newcomers Roffey beat leaders Hastings while Horsham took advantage to cut the gap at the top.

Having been put in, Roffey outplayed six-time champions Hastings with bat, ball and in the field, fully meriting their substantial victory.

The start was delayed because the pitch was damp and a heavy shower further freshened up the strip.

Although Chris Plaister went cheaply, Josh Fleming (51) and Aaron Jeal (21) created a useful platform and George Fleming contributed a valuable unbeaten 47.

For the second consecutive weekend, skipper Mike Norris exuded class with a quality century, including 12 fours and three sixes. By the time he was out – for exactly 100 – Roffey had posted a demanding 256-5.

At the interval Norris said: “Some balls are taking out divots and jumping. We would have bowled first if I’d won the toss. It’s taking spin and I couldn’t ask for more runs than we’ve got.”

Hastings began brightly and were comfortable at 119-1 at the 24-over drinks interval, with two batsmen well set. But the combination of refreshment and a pep talk worked wonders as Hastings subsided to 145-6.

Four fours in an over off paceman Andy McGorian elevated the score to 171-6 before Plaister’s close, reaction catch snaffled another wicket.

Sport in Brief Motor Sport A 30-second penalty denied Southwater’s Jolyon Palmer a 10th-place finish in the GP2 Series at Silverstone.

The 20-year-old dropped to 21st when he was penalised after the race for contact during an overtaking move on Esteban Guttierrez.

He said of the incident: “I felt it was 50-50 because he turned in on me while I was alongside.”

Palmer started the second race in 20th and ended 16th, again finishing ahead of more experienced Arden team-mate Josef Kral.

Horsham Riders Trials club staged its charity weekend at Northlands, supporting Riders for Health.

Eighty were required off 10 overs, surely beyond Hastings – especially when another wicket fell, leaving two batsmen yet to get off the mark.

Josh Fleming’s superb catch saw Hastings stumble to 189-9 – and with fielders crowding the bat and Luke Barnard turning it square, the end came swiftly.

McGorian took 2-73, but Barnard’s 7-54 in 14 testing overs was too severe an examination for the league leaders, enabling Roffey to steam home with almost five overs to spare.

Roffey are unbeaten at home, having won three of their four completed games. Top sides are finding visits difficult and this was another day to savour in Roffey’s outstanding first season in the Premier League.

When Horsham lost the toss to East Grinstead and were put in, skipper Craig Gallagher said: “It’s damp out there so I would have preferred to bowl first to exploit the conditions and then bat when it’s drier.”

John Burroughs, Will Beer and Owain Jones soon departed, but promising stands between James Johnson (43), Devon Endersby (21) and Sam Attfield (19) paved the way for a top-scoring cameo from Gallagher, whose 60 not out included five sixes and three fours.

Matt Henry and Michael Munday also cleared the ropes to enable Horsham to set a challenging target.

Henry quickly dismissed both openers, leaving East Grinstead reeling on 3-2. A recovery followed, but

spinners Beer (2-30) and Munday (5-39) shared 22 overs and soon had the visitors in terminal decline.

Henry finished with 3-20 and Horsham’s fielding was assured, all 10 batsmen being out caught.

Horsham return to second in the table, four points behind Hastings and one point ahead of Nomads, who each have a game in hand. Roffey are fifth.

Horsham travel to Three Bridges tomorrow (Saturday) while Roffey visit Brighton and Hove.

Roffey are looking forward to a big day as they host Cambridge Granta in the last 16 of the ECB National Knockout Cup on Sunday (1pm).

In the Sussex League 20/20 Cup, Horsham (104-4) beat Middleton (103-6) by six wickets and Billingshurst (144) beat Roffey (77) by 67 runs.

Billingshurst, Horsham, Hastings and Preston Nomads will play on finals day at Fulking on Sunday, July 31. The semi-finals will start at 12.15pm, the final at 4pm.

Horsham defeated Marine Gardens 136-98 and Banks Bowling Association 144-92.

A classic rural village ground Martin Read Cricket

Wisborough Green Cricket Club was formed in about 1840, early records referring to a club dinner in the nearby Three Crowns.

The village is in the heart of cricket territory. The 16th-Century Cricketers Arms alongside the ground and another old inn, The Bat and Ball at nearby Newpound Common, suggest the game has a very lengthy history in the area.

A wealth of familiar names from the world of cricket, showbusiness and other spheres have graced the ground. The Nawab of Pataudi played several times in the 1950s and the legendary Jim Laker appeared in the first Lord’s Taverners game a few years later.

Phil Collins, Harry Secombe and Guy Harwood were among those featuring in well-supported Wilting Willows fixtures. Richie Benaud, Neil Harvey and a youthful Derek Pringle also played at Wisborough Green.

The pavilion gallery contains many photographic highlights of these events and the visits of Sir Gary Sobers and jockey Bob Champion sitting astride locally trained Aldaniti, on whom he won the Grand National in 1981.

The tradition of celebrity cricket continues with the club entertaining the Lashings Allstars, and a fixture against the Old England XI is in prospect.

The club fields two Saturday sides in the West Sussex Invitation League.

The first XI top the table, with captain Tim Monday and James Sadler, head of senior players, co-ordinating the push for promotion into the County League.

Serendib at Preston Nomads on September 4. The Sunday team enjoys a full list of friendlies. The seniors train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Development of the colts is a top priority, with almost 150 boys and girls from U6 to 16 training on Friday evenings, managed by Steve CalderSmith. Training sessions culminate with family barbecues.

Eight club members have obtained England and Wales Cricket Board coaching and umpiring qualifications. Others will take courses in the Winter and the club is applying for much-valued Clubmark accreditation.

There is cricket throughout both days at weekends in Wisborough Green. The colts contest IDentilam League matches in the mornings and the seniors play in the afternoons.

There are five colts teams from U10 to U16 and other colts fixtures are arranged on a friendly basis. This is paying dividends as good young players are feeding through into the senior sides.

The club tours every two years, alternating with golf trips.

And the picturesque village ground ensures Wisborough Green is popular with touring teams, especially as the pitch, painstakingly tended by Rob Knight and Ken Vickery, is reliably good and the outfield amply proportioned.

This year Kenyan side Kongonis return to savour the club’s hospitality.

This Sunday is a red letter day at Wisborough Green as the club celebrates President’s Day with a colts match (11am) followed by a senior match and supporting activities.

Wisborough Green is a friendly, family club with long-standing members. The club plays an important role in the community, arranging various social activities, including curry nights, golf tournaments, dancing and the end-of-season party.

The balloon festival, this year on September 11, is always a highlight.

Stoolball is played on the ground midweek during the Summer and football takes over in the Winter.

Mention of cricket at Wisborough Green conjures up a picture of a quintessentially English scene – a match on a classic rural village ground, surely one of the finest to be found anywhere, surrounded by mellow cottages and mature trees, near the Grade I listed parish church of St Peter Ad Vincula.

It is a peaceful spot to enjoy a game, as recognised by enthusiastic spectators every weekend.

Sport in Brief Youth Football Wisborough Green U12 won the Furngate six-a-side, contested by 16 teams at Horley.

Green won six of their seven group games to finish top of the group, Jack Sizzey-Carter and Joel Colbran scoring in the crucial match against Three Bridges U12.

Colbran netted the only goal of the semi-final against Furnace Green Galaxy U12 and Joe Kirkham set up Sizzey-Carter for an extra-time winner in a thrilling final against South Park, Redhill.
