Residents will be banned from using hosepipes as part of the irst water restrictions in Horsham district since 2005-6. From April 5, Southern Water will impose restrictions in Sussex and Kent, including bans on:
• Hosepipes and sprinklers • Watering of public parks, gardens and allotments • Filling swimming pools, paddling pools, ponds and fountains Southern Water is one of seven water companies introducing similar measures after the second-driest 12 months on record in parts of the South East. Rainfall has been below average in nine of the last 16 months. Meyrick Gough, water strategy manager
for Southern Water, said: “These measures are being brought in following an exceptionally dry 12 months. “Thanks to improvements made to our supply network, which enable us to move water from areas with a surplus to those with a shortage, our lowest-ever leakage level, the on-going installation of 500,000 water meters and customers being more water eficient, we are in a better position than we would have been in these circumstances in previous years. Continued from Page 1 “But as the weather gets warmer, the demand for water will rise. To safeguard supplies throughout the summer we need to restrict the amount of water used in gardens.” Water for gardens usually accounts for about six per cent of total supply, but on a hot day this can increase to 70 per cent. A garden sprinkler uses more than 1,000 litres of water an hour – enough to supply six people for a whole day.

Mr Gough added: “Our customers have always helped us to reduce demand. During the summer of 2006, when we were last in drought, they helped us save 43 million litres of water a day. Their support is greatly appreciated. “While firmly playing our part in
managing supplies, we will continue to offer customers advice on how they can avoid wasting water in the garden and the home, as part of our Save Water, Save Energy, Save Money campaign.” Steve Gilbert, of the RSPB South East, said: “This serious and prolonged drought has already had a big impact on RSPB wetland nature reserves across the region, with dry conditions threatening to impact this spring’s breeding season at many sites. “We are taking steps to use water as efficiently as possible on our reserves. In the wider countryside, prospects are bleak for wildlife that needs moist soil conditions and healthy rivers. “The announcement of a hosepipe ban is a clear signal that we all need to do our bit to reduce our impact on the environment and help avoid further damage. “Saving water will ensure more stable, resilient habitats for the birds and other wildlife that depend on our water environments for their survival.”
The Health and Safety Executive is investigating after two men were trapped under a dumper truck in Warnham. The incident happened at the Brookhurst Wood landfill site, off Langhurstwood Road, shortly before midday on Friday last week. A 39-year-old man suffered a broken leg after being crushed by
a six-tonne dumper truck, while a 36-year-old man suffered an ankle injury before being freed by firefighters. Both were taken to East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive told The Resident this week: “The HSE is aware of the incident and is making preliminary enquiries.”

Council’s “exciting” new plans Council not aboard the caravan of love for Horsham town centre Horsham District Council is to extend its consultation on plans to develop parts of Horsham town. The consultation will run between May 4 and June 1. The project aims to steer future changes in the town to maximise its economic potential whilst maintaining and conserving its attractive and historic environment for the benefit of all. Consultants were commissioned to kickstart the project by producing a report which identifies the existing strengths and areas for improvement within the town, and puts forward a vision and strategy for the future. As part of the overall project, Horsham District Council will use this report as a basis to produce planning guidance for future retail, commercial and leisure development in the town. There are a number of opportunities for the wider public to be involved in the initiative. The first was in response to the draft Horsham Town Plan, which was published for consultation on October 28, 2011 for six weeks. The council invited all who live, work and visit the town to give their views on this document and many people gave their views. In light of the comments received during this consultation, the area covered by the draft Horsham Town
Plan has been extended to include The Forum, West Street and Swan Walk. To provide an opportunity for comments on the revised draft Town Plan, a further period of consultation will be run during May and comments on the additional areas are invited. The plan will enable the regeneration of key areas within Horsham town which will increase the vitality and vibrancy of the town. The key areas which have been identified for regeneration are: Albion Way, The Quarter (Piries Place, East Street and Denne Road), The Bishopric, Hurst Road and Nightingale Road area, The Forum, West Street, and Swan Walk. It will help steer potential developers and will act as the council’s starting point for more detailed discussions and proposals that arise in the town over future years. Opportunities for change in the town centre include: • Albion Way – ‘a walkable Albion Boulevard’, with shops lining the street in places. Narrowing carriageways with dedicated bus and cycle lanes, widening pavements, tree lined with safer and more attractive crossing points • Piries Place – new shops, new link from the Carfax through the old King’s Head Hotel service area,
new pedestrian link between East Street and Copnall Way • Bishopric – new shops, new and improved public spaces and better pedestrian and vehicular links to create a western anchor to the town • Hurst Road area – redevelopment of underused railway land and better use of Nightingale Estate for employment, a new hotel on Hurst Road and improved pedestrian links through to the park • The Forum – new shops and the introduction of additional uses such as market uses to enhance the public space • West Street – improvements to street furniture, shop fronts, lighting, paving and signage, a more attractive route from Swan Walk to Sainsbury’s via West Walk and the possible introduction of vehicular traffic • Swan Walk – creation of additional shops within the key retail area of the town The responses received through the additional period of consultation will be considered by officers and members before a draft Horsham Town Plan is presented to the council for adoption in September 2012. Any questions should be addressed to Horsham District Council’s Strategic Planning team on 01403 215398.
Horsham District Council was this week trying to remove this old fire engine, converted into a caravan, from the car park at Billingshurst library. The caravan and a second caravan attached to the back have been taking up seven car parking spaces. A district council spokesman told The Resident: “Horsham District Council was made aware of the situation last Friday. The council’s legal
department is seeking an eviction notice.”
Third raid on Horsham shop Burglars took Moorcroft pottery worth about £20,000 from Samuel Parker, Middle Street, Horsham. Police revealed this week that dishes, plates, vases, clocks and plaques were taken between 5pm on Saturday, March 3, and 9.30am on Monday, March 5. A spokesman for Sussex Police
said: “Devastatingly for the owners, the shop has been targeted three times since June 2011, with Moorcroft being the items stolen each time.” Anyone with any information can phone police on 101, quoting serial 254 of March 5, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

More than 700 youngsters descended on Horsham Rugby Club to take part in the West Sussex Minis Festival, sponsored by the Canadian Spa Co. Horsham U8 and U12 were the most successful local teams as both finished on the wrong end of closely fought finals against Haywards Heath. U8 head coach Justin Acres was delighted with the way his squad played as they defeated Hove 6-2, Chichester 5-2 and Midhurst 10-0. Ten players were selected to represent their age group – Thomas Kimber, James Norbury, Henry Webster, Rory Quigley, Samuel Speed, Kane Moir-Eldridge, Max Lewis, Harrison White, Chae Sakakini and Lewis Jones. As well as winning the U8 and U12 competitions, Haywards Heath shared the U10 title with Chichester, while Chi also won the U7 and U11 competitions and Hove took the U9s. John Riley, chairman of Horsham’s mini and junior section, said: “The atmosphere among the children playing, parents and coaches was fantastic and really uplifting. “Massive thanks must go to the organising team of Val Saunders, Fiona Robison, Jane Edevane and Julia Heath, who put in so much hard work in making the festival such a success and remained calm at all times.” A visiting coach said: “One of my highlights was seeing them (the boys) play happily with their opponents Horsham shortly after the final had finished. This is what it is all about – fun and friendship first, second and third.” Horsham will host the senior Sussex Vase and the Sussex Shield this Sunday and the Horsham Minis Festival a week later.

Why we must plan for a new planning process Nik Butler www.loudmouthman.com
@loudmouthman
My little boy has a truly active imagination. Long are the minutes that he can play unattended and submerged in a narrative and story that unfolds with drama and excitement, heroes and monsters and big finishes with dragons vanquished. However, his imagination pales in comparison to the imagined issues
and activities of “people” who are often part of a “narrative of vindication” when you listen to councillors or council employees discuss planning issues. It’s not the councillors’ or employees’ fault – the process by which a planning application is crafted, modified, reviewed and consulted upon is a lengthy, legal and often cross-communicated affair. The processes can seem a little back-to-front and certainly a little obscure, especially to an outside observer. The opportunities for comment usually arrive after a substantial level of work has occurred on the
plans, and opportunities for discussion can often appear confrontational or subject to antagonism. The chances of there being completely joined up and well considered thought are reduced with every step in that process. Every procedure which takes the concept from a physical issue to a conceptualised plan on paper increases the level of abstraction and oversimplicity. The end result is that officers and elected members are reviewing ideas laid out on paper and it might as well be constructed in Lego for the ease of which it may be interpreted by all the parties concerned.

Ahead it seems of neighbouring parishes, households in Southwater recently received the spring edition of Horsham District News, containing a centrepage feature on the council’s housing consultation. By strange coincidence, this was in the very week that Horsham District Council’s development management committee was expected to give Berkeley Homes the green light to build on green fields west of the village.

Details of the eight-week consultation seem deliberately calculated to manipulate public opinion into endorsing the maximum number of new homes suggested by the Locally Generated Needs Study, produced by property consultants GL Hearn. Not only is emotive imagery used to articulate the inchoate concerns of ‘ordinary people’, but it is claimed that particular housebuilding options will result in the creation of specific numbers of new jobs. No credible economist would link specified house-building levels to such precise job numbers.

you may find that objections outweigh the support, and just as the squeaky wheel gains the most oil so the loudest mouth tends to hold the platform on opinion. Communication and constructive support or opposition needs to be in place at the start of the idea, not after a first plan has been submitted. Planning cannot simply be about those who can, those who will and those who want. The process should not leave people’s voices narrowed down to a few sentences printed on an application. It should be interactive, with people heard long before any legal process or plans begin to take shape, if only to ensure that the stories of real people are folded into the imagination and consequences of future planning applications. Maybe then there is an opportunity to tell a different tale of Horsham District and the dragons of past decisions can finally be slain.

This is where imaginations roam free, as plans are reviewed and questions are asked of officers who should have the experience and information to provide direction and assistance, hopefully without influencing or impairing the judgment of those responsible for agreeing or rejecting a plan. Often these plans are time sensitive, and budgets may not be available to complete in the event that a plan takes too long to be delivered. Add to the above the economic and retail requirements in the last 20 years which have shifted to an online environment. You are left with plans and strategies which may have been suggested five years ago that are now looking as out of date and historic as pictures of Horsham from 20 years ago. Does anyone remember Chart & Lawrence? Then when opinions are sought (more often than not they are accessible online via the planning portal)
How very sad two days later to find that some mindless person, or people, had decided that what had been put there for the pleasure of others had to be destroyed. Why can’t those responsible apply their minds to some helpful cause, rather than a pastime of vandalism? It beggars belief.

Miracle cure? I doubt it We need a local hospital Domestic violence is not cool Simon Clare
horsham.skepticsinthepub.org
@Horsham_Skeptic
Last weekend, as part of my continuing mission to understand why people believe the things they do, I teamed up with a friend from Guildford Skeptics for a joint undercover mission into the fascinating world of alternative therapy and spirituality fairs. These fairs pop up every few months around the South East, providing an opportunity for enthusiasts of non-mainstream medicines and treatments to showcase their wares. Dozens of stalls covered in glittering trinkets, glowing stones and informative leaflets are staffed by enthusiastic proponents eager to answer all your questions about the meditation, massage or medications on offer. Throughout the day free demonstrations are put on, and we chose the one entitled ‘Spiritual healing’. We witnessed a pretty standard display of ‘energy realignment’ on a very willing volunteer which succeeded in making the volunteer feel relaxed. It did look relaxing. When the lady giving the talk went on to claim that this type of hands-off ‘realignment’ would also heal babies and animals, I could hold my silence no longer, and asked how such an effect could possibly be measured. Although the effects are indistinguishable from placebo, people making these claims really do believe them, so there’s no point being nasty about it.
Confirmation bias is a subtle yet powerful force that we are all subject to. When a baby stops crying after healing hands have passed over it, one can be forgiven for thinking it was because of the realignment of the energy and not just that the baby had stopped crying anyway. We went on to pepper the stallholders with good-natured questions. It’s amazing what you are told if you just ask passively, instead of attacking. We were assured by the homeopathy stall that their remedy for jetlag was derived from human pineal glands. Suppressing my laughter, I asked how they obtained human brains for use in their tablets - knowing full well that brains aren’t available to homoeopathic pharmacists. In any case, you couldn’t test for the presence of brain tissue in their medicines as there is not a single molecule of active ingredient in any homoeopathic remedy. Ask a homoeopath to explain this to you, it’s amazing. On a serious note, we encountered a guy selling what he called a ‘miracle cure’ for asthma which also heals burns, as luck would have it. When asked specifically, he assured my asthmatic friend that she could come off her prescribed medicines and switch to his product instead. When challenged to show us evidence and credentials for giving such advice, he squirmed and backtracked. I wonder how many people he gave this advice to before we got there. He tainted an otherwise pleasant afternoon so next time we see him, we’ll be filming.

I read an article in The Resident (February 24) that referenced proposed development plans on part of the Holbrook site where the Holbrook Club is situated. Maybe I did not read it correctly, but if I did I want to express my concern about any proposed development on that site and its direct impact to the local community. Even though Mr John Lines (Horsham FC chief executive) is saying all the right things and implying that alternative recreational facilities could be made available at the Hop Oast site, this would be out of town, way out of the area to be considered part of the local community. Many events are played and enjoyed at the Holbrook site, a lot of which involve local people who may DING INCLU ANDS R B P N TO CTIO CONNE CH • FREN ETTA R • LAMB AL DAMAGE IN UR • CRIM GTH & HONO N • STRE VE E • LE BR IED IF L P M S •A & JONE • JACK

not have their own transport. It cannot be reasonable, and can hardly be protecting the local community, to expect them to drive outside this local area to enjoy the same facilities. How many new homes can Horsham and the surrounding areas support at this present time? During this period of austerity and cuts to the services for the entire infrastructure, hospitals, doctors, dentists, education, police, local services etc, we cannot continue to keep building homes and bringing more people to the area. East Surrey Hospital regularly sends home patients who have arrived for scheduled operations because there are not enough beds. Until there are firm commitments for additional services to meet the increase in population, we should seriously consider how much house growth to approve.

Two women die each week in the UK at the hands or current or expartners. One in four women will be a victim of domestic violence at some point in their lifetime. Police receive one domestic violence related call every minute of every day, yet less than half of all incidents go unreported. I find these statistics terrible and terrifying. Despite this, it seems, too many people see domestic violence as a triviality. Last September, Topman was forced to withdraw a t-shirt from sale after a backlash from the public. The t-shirt said “I’m sorry, but” and had a list of “excuses” including “you provoked me” and “I hate you”. Last month, Chris Brown – who assaulted his ex-girlfriend, Rihanna on the evening of the 2009 Grammys – performed at the 2012 awards ceremony. His attendance at the event received a mixed response. Women’s groups were outraged, but then #womanbeater started trending on Twitter, with numerous young women tweeting that “Chris Brown can beat me any day”. What in the world does this say about modern attitudes to domestic violence? Also last month, controversial animal rights charity PETA received criticism for releasing an advert showing a woman wearing a neck-brace and limping, then returning to her boyfriend who is fixing a hole in the wall. It is shot as an ‘infomercial’ for a fictitious syndrome: Boyfriend Went Vegan and Knocked the Bottom out of Me. Again, I fail to see the funny side. These are just three examples of a worrying trend in making domestic violence socially acceptable. Just in case there’s any doubt, It’s not. Domestic violence is at least a mean, bullying behaviour that noone should be subjected to. In its worst cases domestic violence is horrendous, prolonged physical and mental abuse that destroys its victims. No woman – or man – should have to live in fear of their partner. Here in Horsham, we have our own women’s refuge. It is a fact that shocks me slightly every time I am reminded of it. That here in our nice, safe, low-crime, middle-class town, men are beating their wives and girlfriends to the point that those women choose homelessness. The refuge does an incredible job. It provides residential care, counselling, family support, solicitor appointments and does its best to rehome the women it cares for. More than that, it provides a safe place for women who have nowhere else to turn.

Davina’s pedal power will help children Timber TV presenter Davina McCall will take to the saddle when she joins riders for the second women-only DIVA100 Sussex bike ride. More than 500 ladies raised over £95,000 for Action Medical Research, the Horsham-based children’s charity, by taking part in a similar event last year. The DIVA100 will offer a choice of two circular countryside routes – 50km and 100km – from Cowdray Park, Midhurst, on Sunday, May 13. McCall, who presents The Biggest Loser, The Million Pound Drop and Got to Dance, said: “Last year’s DIVA100 ride was so special. It was great to get so many women together and to help a charity that is very close to my heart. “The event had a really nice, feelgood atmosphere, was great fun and something that all abilities could do. The route was fantastic, the scenery breathtaking and it was all finished off with a guilt-free burger! “I really hope to see everyone again
for this year’s ride and to make it an even bigger and better event.” Event organiser Sarah Stevenson said: “Last year’s DIVA100 ride was the charity’s first women’s bike ride and the response was so positive we’re actually doing three DIVA rides this year. “The Sussex event is the original. We hope to see last year’s riders and lots of new faces joining us and Davina for another great day’s cycling in such a beautiful area.” Action Medical Research is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952. The charity is supporting work around meningitis, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, premature birth and very rare conditions that severely affect children. Entry to the bike ride is £28 and participants will also need to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. To sign up, visit www.action.org.uk/ diva100

Why people with learning difficulties ‘feel safer’ A scheme to help prevent bullying, abuse and harassment of people with learning difficulties has been launched in Horsham. The Safe Place scheme is a joint initiative by West Sussex County Council and Sussex Police. Scheme members carry a card that can be presented to staff at participating businesses and shops, displaying their name and the phone number of someone they trust. The scheme is free to join and participating businesses display a
sticker in their windows: “Making our community a safer place.” Rebecca Mason, co-owner of Lookfantastic, said: “We are a local business and everyone who works here lives in or near Horsham, so it’s nice to look after the community.” Cllr Peter Catchpole, county council Cabinet member, said: “This is a fantastic idea that will help people with learning disabilities integrate into the community. “If people with a learning disability
don’t feel safe and feel they cannot move around freely, how can they integrate into their communities?” Chief Insp Sharon Parker said: “I hope the introduction of this scheme in Horsham will assist with helping vulnerable people in going about their lives in the knowledge that support is available.” National statistics indicate that people with a learning disability are four times more likely than others to be robbed with violence or threats.
One in four people with a learning disability says he or she has been physically assaulted, while nine out of 10 people with a learning disability have experienced bullying in the last year. For more information or to join the scheme, visit www.westsussex.gov. uk/safeplace, email gary.capelin@ westsussex.gov.uk or write to The Safe Places Scheme, The Strawford Centre, Blatchford Close, Horsham RH13 5RG.
Independent timber and builder’s merchant Covers is creating four new jobs as part of its expansion in Horsham. The local firm, which has 12 branches across Sussex and Hampshire, has ambitious plans to move from its current premises on Foundry Lane to a brand new one-acre depot just 300 metres down the road. In addition to creating four new full time posts, the move will allow Covers to increase its stock offering for customers. Operations Director Henry Green said: “As a local independent company we are delighted to be able to announce this expansion which will provide an improved service to our existing and future new customers. “We have a very loyal customer base in Horsham and are pleased to be able to provide them with fantastic new facilities and an extended range of products, as well as our usual competitive prices.” In addition to boasting ample free car parking and its own on-site sawmill facilities, the new Covers depot will see a return to the supply of a range of loose aggregates. News
Here is the news from Jan Leeming
Making the right noises The Horsham Town Band, which has a documented history from 1780, says it will welcome new members. First documented as a pipe and drum band, it regularly appeared at the head of general election parades before it evolved into a concert band. The Horsham Town Band ‘joined’ the Royal British Legion in 1948, becoming an affiliated member of the Horsham branch. Although concentrating on concerts, the band regularly appears in military-style marching formation on days such as St George’s Day and Armistice Day. A spokesman said: “The band will
always welcome new members and players from all walks of life and does not ask for any subscriptions. Membership of the Royal British Legion is required at a cost of less than £20 per annum. “With the exception of the percussion section, and some larger brass instruments, you would also need your own instrument.” For more information, visit www. horshamband.org.uk, email horshamrblbandtreasurer@supanet. com or secretary@horshamband. org.uk, or write to The Sussex Band of The Royal British Legion (Horsham), Edwin Hall, Chichester Terrace, Horsham RH12 1DB.
Janice Leeming
Janice Leeming has started work as the new chief executive of Age UK Horsham District. She joined the charity from Age UK East Sussex, where she was director of services and led a team of over 300 staff and volunteers for more than three years. Vivien Lyth, chairman of Age UK Horsham District, said: “We were looking for a chief executive who has the drive and vision to lead us to the next stage of our development. We believe Janice is that person. “As an independent charity, we
need to identify and respond to the changing needs of the increasing and ageing population. “For instance, the number of people over the age of 60 in the 205 square miles of Horsham district is projected to increase to 32,800 by the year 2025, an increase of 60 per cent. “We are looking to strengthen existing, and build new, partnerships which lead to the development of innovative and affordable services that will help to provide an improved quality and enjoyment to later life.”
Boost for kidney patients’ group St Helier and Surrey Kidney Patients’ Association (KPA) raised almost £500 from a collection in Swan Walk on World Kidney Day. Jim Rae, treasurer of St Helier and Surrey KPA, said: “Last year we made £303, this year £472. “More importantly, no fewer than four people in the day especially visited the stand and nurses to ask for renal advice because of what you wrote in The Resident.”

Move to drive down risks on our roads Helping “older drivers” stay safe is the aim of a new initiative by the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership. Recent DVLA figures show there are well over a million drivers in the UK aged at least 80, with more than 100 over the age of 100. And the number of drivers aged 60-74 is projected to increase by 22 per cent by 2016. Although older drivers are statistically no more likely to be involved in a crash, the risk of death or serious injury can be magnified by the effects of aging. The partnership has designated next week as Older Drivers’ Week, with information events across Sussex including one in Swan Walk on Thursday, March 22, and the following day. A spokesman said: “The aim is to ensure that older motorists, their friends and families and health professionals have all of the information they need to make a positive decision.” For more information, visit www. Last week, the 10th annual Microbiz was held, welcoming a record number of guests through the doors. More than 500 people attended the exhibition at the Drill Hall in Horsham, which is aimed at small businesses. Exhibitors included The Resident, Spofforths, Visit Horsham, Foundry Press, BritWeb, Ofload Business Resources and many other companies that offer products and services to those who run or would like to start a small business. In addition to exhibition stands there were also free seminars run by experts and Beeches café set up shop for the day offering refreshments. This year marks a decade of the event, which was celebrated with cake, supplied by Cakes by Sharon Walker, and balloons.
John Peel OBE, chairman of Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership, opened the event and has supported Microbiz since it was created in 2003. He judged a competition to ind the best small and large stands by exhibitors. The winners were BritWeb, a website design and SEO specialist company and Ofload Business Resources. Both businesses were exhibiting at the event for the irst time. As a prize, both winners received a full page ad in The Resident, which is a sponsor of the event. Most of the visitors that attended this year’s Microbiz event were small business owners looking to network, take advantage of the free business seminars and source new suppliers. There were also visitors who were thinking of starting a business, who came along seeking inspiration and
sound advice. Cllr Roger Paterson, Horsham District Council’s cabinet member for the local economy, said: “Many congratulations to Horsham’s small business community for making this year’s Microbiz Fair such a huge success. “There can be no better advertisement than the number of successful exhibitors who were themselves originally visitors to an earlier fair. “No wonder Horsham district has the highest number of start-up businesses in West Sussex with the best record of long term success.” Among the sponsors for Horsham Microbiz were The Resident, Coast to Capital, Federation of Small Businesses, Foundry Press, Horsham Training Centre and Spofforths.

RSPCA gets Gold for a healthy workplace RSPCA has received the first ever Gold Healthy Workplace Award, from Horsham District Council. The Southwater-based charity was recognised in the council’s employee health and wellbeing initiative. Following discussions with staff, healthier living became common at RSPCA, with activities such as yoga, dance and lunchtime walks as well as health workshops, health screenings and healthier options in the staff restaurant. An improved understanding of heart disease, stress management and weight loss were just some of the benefits made available to employees, who are often found thinking of animal welfare before their own. Sue Stafford, manager of employee wellbeing and safety at the RSPCA, said: “The RSPCA achieves its aims through its dedicated staff and volunteers. “Looking after our people and encouraging them to look after themselves therefore supports the animal welfare cause.” The Chairman of Horsham District Council, Councillor Claire Vickers, said: “I am delighted that the RSPCA has achieved this award. “Looking after staff and showing a genuine commitment to health and safety and staff health and wellbeing improves staff morale, increases productivity and reduces staff sickness. “Local businesses have an important role to play in creating Advert AW

Helping Nigel celebrate 40 years on trolleys A member of staff at Sainsbury’s in Horsham is celebrating 40 years of service at the supermarket. Nigel Holloway has been pushing trolleys for his four decades at the store and recently his colleagues helped him celebrate the milestone. He received cake (baked by colleague Heather Lucas) and champagne and chocolates. Banners were also put up around the store and car park to congratulate Nigel on his achievement. The Sainsbury’s employee has worked in three store locations, but has spent the last 15 years at the Worthing Road, Horsham, branch. Mr Holloway said: “I started at the Purley Cross store in 1972 at the age of 18. For £13.75 a week I used to walk quite a way to collect trolleys that were scattered. In those days we didn’t have a car park so people used
to take the trolleys home!” Mr Holloway joined the Horsham store in 1997. He added: “I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. The way people shop now is so different, I remember fondly the days of Sunday and Monday closing, when the family used to spend happy days out at the coast. “Changes in the way we work too. There are many more trolleys in all shapes and sizes to suit the family, nowadays we have an electric trolley truck which helps a great deal when moving so many trolleys at a time.” According to his peers, Nigel is always looking at how things could be done more efficiently in store and last year received a ‘Shining Star Award’ from Head Office. He said: “it really was a proud moment for me.” Mr Holloway’s ambition now is to reach 50 years of service and to be

Celebrating 20 years of ‘Learn to Swim’ scheme More than 100 swimming instructors have attended an Olympic-themed seminar to mark the 20th year of a Learn to Swim scheme run by Southern Water. The award-winning programme, organised with the help of the Amateur Swimming Association, supports swimming lessons at more than 85 pools and clubs across Sussex, Hampshire, Kent and the Isle of Wight. The instructors at the seminar, which was held at the K2 leisure centre in Crawley, have all played a key role in helping more than 600,000 young people learn to swim since 1992. They were addressed by Southern Water chief executive Matthew
Wright, Crawley MP Henry Smith and the chief executive of British Swimming David Sparkes. They also heard from Learn to Swim ambassadors Duncan Goodhew MBE, who won Gold at the Olympics in 1980, and five-time Paralympic gold medal winner Sascha Kindred OBE. Henry Smith MP said: “It is fantastic that, in this Olympic year, Southern Water and the instructors are celebrating the 20th year of Learn to Swim. I look forward to thousands more children being able to take part in the years to come.” David Sparkes also praised the scheme, saying that learning to swim was ‘one of the great achievements in a child’s life’.
He added: “I find it staggering that more than 600,000 children have been taught to swim through this scheme. “Learning to swim is one of the great moments in life. It’s up there with learning to walk, talk and ride a bike. It’s something you never forget, as well as being a vital life skill.” His sentiments were echoed by Duncan Goodhew, who won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Mr Goodhew said: “When we learn to swim as youngsters, it gives us a great sense of achievement. It makes us feel really big inside and smile from ear to ear. 600,000 children have felt like that thanks to Learn to Swim.”

National marketing award for Southern Southern, the railway services operator, has won the Automotive/ Transport category for its Southern Adventure campaign at the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s National Marketing Excellence awards. Beating First Group, Stagecoach, Europcar, Peugeot, Heathrow and Gatwick Airport to the prize, Southern Adventure was hailed by the judges who said it was an “Excellent, innovative, educational programme neatly linking all the players together. The campaign demonstrated a phenomenal set of results and benefits of a well thought out marketing plan.” Southern’s fully integrated summer campaign was a hit, capturing the imagination of youngsters and offering passengers great discounts on Advance fares. As well as the traditional methods of marketing such as adverts, leaflets and emails, Southern also distributed some activity packs to children and schools across the Southern Network. These packs were fun and educational promoting the great attractions accessible by train across the Southern network. Working with the National Schools Partnership ensured that this campaign was also
Southern marketing manager Angela Batchelor
a great aide to teachers in those final summer weeks at school. Alistair Buckle, Southern’s Head of Marketing said: “We are delighted to have won such a prestigious award. It’s one thing to win awards within our own industry, but to be recognised nationally across all transport sectors is a fantastic achievement.” When devising the campaign, Southern took the original notion of
attracting more passengers to travel off-peak one step further by making the kids the focus. The idea was to make young people think about the many great days out that could be possible on the Southern network - combining a very nice discount to make the costs family friendly with a snapshot of the tons of stuff to do. To support this element, Southern teamed up with the National Schools
Partnership (NSP), which spread the word to schools and parents with advice and ideas on exciting to places to go by train this summer. The programme also encouraged pupils to continue learning throughout the summer break. NSP also assisted by distributing the packs to primary schools in the Southern catchment area, together with an accompanying lesson plan
available to download from the Sothern website. The packs included a Southern Adventure activity book, adventure map, crayons, badge, moustache and a jelly bean sweetie train. Southern provides services in south London and between central London and the south coast, through East and West Sussex and Surrey and parts of Kent and Hampshire.

Millais musicians team up with RAF for charity concert James Hood Entertainment Editor
james@the-resident.co.uk
Musicians from Millais School will be performing in part of a charity concert with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force at The Capitol on Friday, April 13 The Central Band of the Royal Air Force is one of the premier military bands in the UK. They have represented the RAF at every major military
event and performed at prestigious concert venues across Britain. Pupils from the school have arranged the concert by the Central Band to raise money for Help for Heroes. Tickets for the evening are expected to sell out. The RAF band will perform the first act. Following an interval, 12 girls from the school will take to the stage to perform in the band. Helen Cockcroft, aged 16 and a Grade 8 Oboe player, said: “To play in a band alongside 50 professional
musicians is a fantastic opportunity. “I have been fortunate enough to visit the band on three occasions and the experience has not only given me the chance to play a different genre of music but has also helped to shape my career ambition to be in a military band.” Millais School has a long-standing relationship with the Salon Orchestra and Central Band of the Royal Air Force. Each year some musicians from the school are invited to RAF Northolt where they spend a day rehearsing with the Band as well as receiving a tour round other areas of the RAF Station. Lucy Keeling 14, the event Chairperson for the concert added: “I was delighted to be asked to organise this concert in aid of Help for Heroes although it is quite daunting to have to organise a concert for an audience of 400 people. We are working very hard to ensure the evening is
presented professionally, an enjoyable experience for the audience and at the same time generates funds for Help for Heroes.” Rob Jordan, chief technician and the RAF band’s media and communications officer added: “The Central Band of the Royal Air Force has played all over the world in the finest concert venues. Sometimes however, working in smaller concert venues inevitably brings the band closer to the audience. “To have a concert organised by such young people is a first for the Central Band and to have musicians from a school playing with us during the concert is also very rare but the Millais girls all have the necessary talent. I have no doubt that the evening will be spectacular and one to remember.” To book tickets visit www. thecapitolhorsham.com or call 01403 750220.

Bad Boy Boogie
Having cemented their reputation as one of West Sussex’s inest tribute bands, iring out a handful of electrifying local performances over the past year, AC/DC tribute band Bad Boy Boogie are gearing up for what could be one of their largest and most exciting gigs yet. After packing out local pub The Bedford back in December, this ivepiece are dusting off their wigs and returning to The Holbrook Club on
Saturday, March 24, and are anticipating that the venue will be packed to the rafters. This ive-piece have a large repertoire of AC/DC’s classic anthems to ill their extensive setlist with, and are to be joined by fellow tribute act Stone Gossard & The Wonderbras, who will be performing grunge legends Pearl Jam’s critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Ten’. To tell us about Bad Boy Boogie’s ascent to the top of the tribute band hierarchy, we spoke exclusively to frontman Paul Davis and lead guitarist Si Leach, to tell us what the future holds for the band:
Paul, you’ve been in the band for about a year now; have you adjusted well? How have the Horsham crowds been treating you? PAUL: “I’ve been treated very well! There were some big boots to ill with Steve’s (Weaver, Bad Boy Boogie’s previous frontman) departure, although not as big as his permed wig!” I understand you guys went off to record some demos for the irst time recently, how was the recording experience for you all? P: “Recording was really good fun, but it was strange playing bits at different times. Hats off to our engineer Jez though, top job!” SI: “Recording was a great experience, and a pleasure to play with such talented musicians. We managed to record three complete songs in 6 hours, but it does help when most of it was done in one take!” You’re currently preparing for what could be one of your biggest gigs yet, but what have you got in store for the people of Horsham? S: “We always love playing the Holbrook. It’s the one venue in town where we can guarantee getting everyone in; we’ve played pub gigs in Horsham, and although they
Photos by Cheryl Zimmerman
are great fun, there’s nothing worse than knowing that people are being turned away. We have a great support act though, so it should be a stormer!” P: “It’s just a rock ‘n’ roll! But we will be adding more previously unperformed tracks from AC/DC’s back catalogue that we’ll ‘inject’ into our set…” Do either of you have any out-ofthe-ordinary pre-gig rituals? P: “I wish! I’m too busy lugging all the gear in!” S: “Even after 17 years I still get slight pre-show nerves, but as long as I’ve had a few beers, my wig is
on straight and my guitar is in tune, nothing else matters.”
What do Bad Boy Boogie have planned for the rest of the year? S: “Our recent studio recordings are nearing the inal mix and sound fantastic, and we hope to use these to promote ourselves and play some other bigger venues around the South-East.” P: “I’m looking forward to playing the bigger venues, we’re well on our way and we reckon that Dirty DC (Brighton-based AC/DC tribute band) might be looking over their shoulder now!”

‘Nothing less than wonderful’ act comes to town
Count Arthur Strong, showbiz legend and raconteur, returns to the stage to remind us just what we’ve been missing since his heyday at the very top of the entertainment game. Count Arthur is back, by pubic demand, with extended dates for his ‘Command Performance’ tour. So get your Maltesers out, roll your trouser legs up and sit back and enjoy this potentially wonderful show. Pausing only to glance up from your program to ask when the interval is, you’ll have never seen anything like it - whatever it is. Arthur is ably assisted in the Command Performance by Terry Kilkelly, playing Malcolm and Renee, and Dave Plimmer, as Dad’s Army’s Alan Leslie. Steve Delaney created Count Arthur Strong while studying at the Central School of Speech and Drama in the 1980s. During his career as an actor he recreated the character for an outing at the Edinburgh Fringe in the mid 90’s. The character quickly became an Edinburgh Festival Fringe institution with his famed lecture talks gaining both a cult following and huge critical acclaim. Following his successes in Edinburgh, hit shows from Forgotten Egypt, to The Man Behind the Smile

sold out comedy festivals around the country and toured extensively. In 2004 the character moved firstly onto BBC Radio 2 as a regular guest on the Mark Radcliffe Show, and then onto BBC Radio 4 in Count Arthur Strong’s Radio Show. The show won the Sony Award for Best Radio Comedy in 2009 and the seventh series is currently airing at 6:30pm on Tuesday’s on BBC Radio 4. Now a cornerstone of BBC Radio comedy, it has created a national audience who get the joke. A Count Arthur Strong TV project is currently in development with Talkback Thames for BBC2. The Mirror said: “Forever the nearly man of show business and an expert mangler of words, Count Arthur is nothing less than wonderful… one of the greatest comic creations of this century, Count Arthur is compulsory viewing.” While the Mail on Sunday commented: “Malapropisms, spoonerisms, tall stories and archive footage meticulously stitched together… it is an immaculate performance.” Showing at The Capitol on Thursday, April 5 at 8pm. Hyundai’s New Generation i30 hits UK showrooms Olli Nott Motors Editor
The New Generation i30 looks set to build upon the remarkable success achieved by the original model when its hits UK showrooms. It will offer consumers a stylish and more refined alternative with improved comfort and packaging, an increased level of standard feature, lower emissions and cost of ownership. Prices start from £14,495 (on the road) and rise to £20,795 – offering a line-up of four engines (two petrol and two diesels) with five power outputs ranging from 90 to 128ps and four trim levels - Classic, Active, Style and Style Nav. Hyundai is committed to developing its clean diesel technologies. The new 1.6-litre diesel unit, featuring Intelligent Stop & Go technologies, delivers an impressive power to efficiency ratio, providing an output of 128ps and emissions of just 100 g/km. This will make this model one of the most efficient vehicles in the C-segment. Blue Drive technologies is standard on all 1.6 CRDi manuals with CO2 emissions from just 97g/km and fuel economy of up to 76.3mpg. The New Generation i30 is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor – generating sportier exterior proportions without compromising interior functionality. Overall length is increased by 20 mm (to 4,300 mm), width is enlarged by 5 mm (to 1,780 mm) and height has been reduced by 10 mm (to 1,470 mm). The 2,650 mm
wheelbase is carried over from the original i30 model. Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO Hyundai Motor UK, says: “The new generation i30 represents another leap forward in terms of Hyundai’s design, refinement and
build quality. Coupled with our generous standard specification and backed up by our industry leading Five Year Triple Care assurance, the New Generation i30 truly represents the complete package for customers looking for a high-quality vehicle at
an affordable price.” The New Generation i30 was recently announced as ‘Car of the Year 2012’ by leading car review website, CarBuyer. Although Hyundai may not hold as much presence or prosperity in
the larger car market, the Korean company are now one of the biggest manufacturers, and have a new air of quality about their cars. This new i30 is at the forefront of that.

The Audi A1 has earned another notch on its awards post by being named Best Luxury Small Car of 2012 by CarBuyer’s expert panel of road testers and reviewers. Editor-in-chief of CarBuyer, Steve Fowler, explained: “The Audi A1 continues to be the best luxury small car for CarBuyer users. It’s posh, but not too pricey, while running costs are super low. We love the way it looks, the way it drives and the quality for the cash is unbeatable.” The judges also highlighted that the A1’s “sleek good looks and an incredibly upmarket cabin are at the heart of the Audi’s appeal, while its impeccable build quality is second to none. What’s more, the arrival of the more versatile five-door Sportback version means the A1 is now as practical as it is desirable. On this evidence, it’s going to take something very special to knock the Audi off the top step of the podium in 2013.” Martin Sander, Director of Audi UK, commented “It gives me great pleasure to be accepting a second award for the A1 this year, which is also its second consecutive CarBuyer award. The fact that the A1 is continuing to win awards and
defending the titles it won last year shows its enduring appeal.” Prices for the A1 start from £13,420 OTR (1.2 TFSI 86PS SE model) and go to £21,810 OTR for the top of the
range 1.4 TFSI 185PS Black Edition model. For more information, visit Five Oaks Audi, Stane Street, Five Oaks, Billingshurst, or call 01403 787000.

Colbran heralds ‘brilliant’ Hornets
Horsham celebrate their goals at Billericay
James Herd Football
Horsham have already made steps forward under new manager Simon Colbran, including a brilliant 2-2 draw at league leaders Billericay Town. The Hornets twice led against the Essex promotion-chasers, thanks to goals from Dan Morris and Ray Freeman, and Colbran was full of praise for his side. He said: “It was an absolutely brilliant performance and I think with a bit more luck we could have

won. “The way we went about it, actually playing football, getting the ball on the loor. We were the better footballing side, that’s for sure.” Horsham then faced a tricky trip to FA Trophy heroes Wealdstone and the challenge proved a little too much, two goals in as many minutes contributing to a 3-0 defeat.
Colbran said: “We were excellent in the irst half, but they scored two quick goals and that knocked us back. “We had four players out and three players on the pitch who probably wouldn’t have played if I’d have had cover. We just haven’t got the squad to cover that.” Despite the setback at Wealdstone,
and inished off well, so we’re very happy with our execution and the result. “It could so easily have been 10-0 had we capitalised on the other opportunities that we created. The 6-3 scoreline was rather lattering to Brighton.” Horsham Ladies moved out of the bottom two by beating Maidstone Ladies 3-0, thanks to two goals by Fran Crossley and one from Steph Dent. Team manager Jane Denman said: “Although this was only our second win of the season, our games have been tight and everyone has kept going in a very professional way. “This result was particularly pleasing because we still have players
missing, but it was great to get former captain Siobhan Henn back. “We haven’t been scoring enough goals, but this week we could have had many more.” Horsham U10 Boys drew with Lewes U10 and Mid Sussex U10 but were unlucky to inish with two points from six matches in the County Championship. Despite the points total, the team performance was very good and several players produced their best hockey of the season. U10 squad: Sam Berriman, George Cardwell, Seb Dunkley, Fergal EasonButler, Tom Emery, James Harvey, Ben Kinnison, James Ormerod, Luke Portman, Ted Thomas.
the former Redhill boss highlighted self-belief as a reason behind his side’s positive run of late. He told The Resident: “Our conidence is growing and growing. I actually believed we’d get something out of the game on Saturday and the players did as well. “I wouldn’t say it was a shock, because every game they go into now they’re looking to get a result. “Even though they are really good players, they just have to believe it. They are starting to believe it now and the football we’re playing is proof of that.” New signings Scott Harris, Charlie
Farmer, Wayne Clark and Femi Akintunde all featured against the Stones. Colbran added: “The additions I’ve made have done very well. Charlie Farmer has been excellent every game he’s played. “We’ve got Andy Atkin to come in and he’s a proven goalscorer at all levels, but we do need to get one or two more in the squad. When you play at this level, you need 18 minimum.” Horsham face a tough trip to promotion-chasing Bury Town tomorrow (Saturday).
Horsham hat-trick hero Hough is too hot to handle Martin Read Hockey
Matt Hough’s hat-trick in the irst 15 minutes paved the way for Horsham’s ifth consecutive victory, 6-3 at Brighton and Hove. Mark Ansell, back after a prolonged absence, scored the fourth and Duncan Howarth found the net to give Horsham a 5-0 lead at the interval. Nathan Hill converted one of his speciality penalty licks to put Horsham further ahead before their concentration wavered and the city side scored three times. Horsham skipper John Burroughs said: “This was a comfortable day for us. We made good decisions in the D

Second-placed Roffey Robins United U11 kept the title race alive by winning 2-0 at leaders Chesworth Rovers U11. Rovers, who had won all 11 league matches before this defeat, now need four points from their final two games to definitely top Division A of the Horsham and District Youth League. In the first half of a pulsating and sometimes frantic match, Rovers were frustrated by the outstanding defending of Robins’ Callum Jeal, a goal disallowed for offside, a rejected penalty shout and a lob off the crossbar by Jed Hooper-Ridsdale. The game turned 10 minutes into the second half. Robins goalkeeper Harry Powling denied Jack Frankland with his feet, seconds before Max Furber struck a looping shot to put the visitors 1-0 up. Robins sealed the points 10 minutes from time when Kris Bicknell fired home from close range after a corner and almost added a third through the hardworking Ralph Robson. As well as being a keen Albion supporter, you are president of Horsham Sparrows. How do the two compare? As well as playing in the same kit, there is quite a lot of similarity. Albion has a nationwide reputation for being an outstanding communitybased club and the Albion in the Community team has won many accolades. The FA awarded Chartered Standard Community Club Award status to Sparrows for providing a base for local girls and boys of all abilities to play football from the age of seven. We also run two adult teams for both men and women, so you can see we cater for a wide range of local residents.
How did the name Sparrows come about? One of the original founders, Laurie Taylor, used to take his son and his friends to play football in the park after the 1966 World Cup. He thought that the 20-or-so little knobbly kneed lads looked like a flock of Sparrows as they chased after the ball. I believe he was an Albion fan, so the choice of colours came naturally.
Do many of the Sparrows follow Albion? I think a lot of them follow the socalled glamour clubs, but several do visit The Amex on a regular basis and a couple join us on NWSS coaches to home games. It would be nice to think that more will gradually find their way to The Amex and I am sure this will happen in time.
Getting to the ground could be a problem for new supporters, so would there be room on the NWSS coaches for them? Yes, we are always happy to welcome new supporters, although we would expect any really young passengers to be accompanied by an adult. We were joined by one of the Sparrows’ teams and their parents when the youth international was staged at The Amex this season. How do you see the future for both clubs? I hope they both continue to grow and prosper and with the individuals in control of both clubs I see no reason why this should not be the case. The future is indeed bright, except it is blue and white striped! You can contact NWSS via wwwnorthwestsussexseagulls.co.uk and Horsham Sparrows by emailing secretary@horshamsparrows.com

No way back from early tries
Sport in Brief Youth Boxing Rising star Danny Kirkland, from Billingshurst, got back to business as usual with an excellent win in Poole. The Horsham Boxing Club southpaw had suffered his first two losses this season against far more experienced opponents. But the 15-year-old prospect won a unanimous points decision against Poole puncher Lee Cutler, who had stopped two of his four opponents in the first round. The crowd at The Lighthouse were treated to a pulsating toe-to-toe battle and stood to applaud both boxers. Kirkland boxed with a controlled ferocity and maturity, weathering a storm in the final round when the strong Dorset boxer caught him with some heavy shots. Bradley Parsons, 14, boxed well but came out in the wrong end of a majority points decision against Poole’s Zak Ealey.

Horsham were without several regular players against highflying Medway, creating a great opportunity for any player trying to break into the team. The game started evenly and Horsham contested well until an outstanding run from Will Alkin, who combined pace and skill to put Medway in front. The visitors soon doubled their try count when poor tackling allowed the quick Rob Ellis to create space and pass to Doug Ebanks who went over easily. Two more tries left Horsham 22-0 down, but the home side enjoyed a good period of play before half time

as they tried to regain a bit of pride. They were rewarded when a good run by Rory Yeates and clean passing set up Jonny Whiting for Horsham’s first try. Horsham scored again after the break when Nick Bell’s pass was returned to him by Tom Wright, but Medway’s fifth try realistically ended hopes of a comeback and they added another as Horsham began to tire. The result was fair but Horsham are sitting comfortably in the league with three games left and can be pleased with their efforts so far. Horsham tries: Whiting, Bell.

Hundreds of years of history at Slinfold CC Martin Read Cricket
The first account of Slinfold cricket was a game against Rudgwick on Broadbridge Heath Common in May 1775, pre-dating the MCC. The club has played regularly ever since, the beautiful Lyons Road ground having been the home base for around 135 years. Slinfold is a progressive, vibrant club with five adult teams, including two who play in the Sussex County League. On Sundays there is a League Development XI comprising older colts, a friendly side and a Golden Oldies Over-40s team. Colts cricket is a key element at
Slinfold, with qualified coaches. Further coaching candidates are encouraged to attend courses with financial assistance from the club. Promising young players are valued and promoted, with well over 60 colts participating in three leagues – U12, U13 and U15. Outdoor coaching nights are run every Friday throughout the summer. Slinfold is a true village club where the majority of participants have strong connections with the village, This is a happy family club, as confirmed by the range of events such as barbecues, golf days and inter-club activities. The Slinfest music festival has proved especially popular and the club will be a principal focus
Southwater driver Jolyon Palmer warmed up for the GP2 Series by finishing ninth overall at the final test in Barcelona. The 21-year-old joined 25 other top international drivers for a threeday session at the Circuit de Catalunya, home to the Spanish Grand Prix. Having finished fifth fastest during a test in Jerez, Palmer continued his strong form on the opening day by going second quickest in the morning session and fifth fastest for the day. He said: “Overall, Barcelona has been good. We have had new challenges and seem to have found a solution for them all. Now I feel prepared to have a good weekend in Malaysia (March 23-25).”
during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The present clubhouse was opened by David Sheppard, the former Sussex and England captain who lived locally before becoming Bishop of Liverpool. The clubhouse and adjoining marquee are prominent features at the ground, making the club a soughtafter venue for social gatherings. A large marquee houses the lively annual club dinner and presentation evening in October. England and Wales Cricket Board Clubmark accreditation has been achieved, opening the door for funding to further improve the already impressive facilities. In 2000, an Old England XI played
a charity match to mark 225 years of Slinfold cricket. In the clubhouse is an outstanding array of photographs showing Derek Randall, John Snow, Derek Underwood, John Lever and other famous players enjoying the day. Thirteen years earlier, the club’s tour of Australia coincided with England winning the Ashes there. Indoor nets at Christ’s Hospital continue at 6-7pm every Sunday until early April and new members are assured of a good welcome. For colts cricket, contact Ben Overton on 01403 230026. Lindfield U12 (88 and 138-1) clinched the title by beating Billingshurst U12 (44) and Southwater U12 (91) in the iDentilam Colts Indoor League at Tanbridge House School. In the other game at the weekend, Billingshurst U12 (96-3) beat Southwater (93-5).
