It’s another week in which our pubs and restaurants are the talk of the town. The Boars Head, which closed suddenly earlier this year, has re-opened in equally rapid circumstances, with new owners, new paint job and a new menu. The four strong management team have put the emphasis firmly on food, and on restoring the Boars to its rural roots. As Carmela’s, a new Italian at the top of Denne Road, continues to make progress as it strives for an August opening, Strada has unveiled plans for a dramatic facelift. The restaurant, in East Street, will close from August 19th, to emerge 10 days later with a £100,000 refurbishment and new colour scheme. But without doubt, the word of the week is Wabi. A far from generous two star review in The Guardian triggered extensive local response after the article was posted on the Horsham Facebook page, which has 3,500 members.
The story has ensured that there’s no shortage of people with a view on the new Japanese r, which opened at the former Horse and Groom pub site in June, whether they have been there or not. Taken aback by the negative publicity after the initial euphoric local welcoming it received, the staff at Wabi have been asked to defend its prices. Of course, we couldn’t comment unless we had tested Wabi for ourselves. So we have, and you can read the first local review of the restaurant inside today’s paper. We’ve also been to The Boars Head, which may not yet be quite what its owners hope it one day will be, but offers good reason to be optimistic for the future of this wonderful 16th century pub on the edge of town. And do let us know your thoughts on Horsham’s eating out scene. We’ll be kicking off a letters page next week and would love to hear your views. See Page 11 for details.
