These children and their teachers need your help to turn their dreams into reality after the sad death of a friend.

Jude, Isabelle, Beth and all other Year 4 pupils have developed plans for a Thinking Garden at Holbrook Primary School, partly in memory of Abigail Hargreaves, who died of cancer in December aged only eight. The 57 youngsters in Year 4, including 29 in Abigail’s class, came up with the idea as a tribute to their friend and a quiet

place for other people to reflect. They researched, designed and costed the project and sent out letters to local businesses appealing for money and help. Head teacher Deborah Moss said: “The children are the brains behind the project and have tried to make it reflect Abigail’s interests, including horses.” Continued on Page 3

William Thomas Allen, 66, is accused of murdering Linda Allen, 64, at their rented home in Nyetimber Lane, West Chiltington, on Thursday last week, June 9. He appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Monday and Lewes Crown Court on Wednesday and was twice remanded in custody. He has not yet entered a plea and is next due to appear at Lewes Crown Court for a plea case management hearing on August 26. The post mortem on Mrs Allen showed she died of head injuries and stab wounds to the chest. John Colvin, brother of Mrs Allen, said: “Linda was a wonderful and caring sister. The site before The Green Gym cleared it

Continued from Page 1 A horse-riding theme includes ideas of horseshoe-shaped flower beds, a horse trough wildlife pond, fences that look like showjumping poles and a horse woven out of willow, made with the help of boys at The Forest School later this term. Some of the flowers planted will be in Abigail’s favourite colours of purple and turquoise. The plans also include paving, gates, steps, seats, bird feeders and boxes, wind chimes and a covered blackboard on which children can write their reflections. It is expected to cost between £4,000 and £8,500, depending on how much is done, but the children need more money so that their innovative scheme can go ahead as planned. They are keen to see their ideas become reality. Horsham Green Gym cleared the waste ground of brambles and bushes, free of charge. The Rotary Club of Horsham is helping arrange for work to be done and will make a donation from its Making a Difference scheme. Horsham Children Can Do is leading the way so far with a donation of £750. Other donations and offers have come from the Gatwick Airport Community Trust (£250), MORE TH>N (£200), Novartis (£50), Homebase, Waitrose, Doves Barn Nurseries, Haskins Garden Centre, Hilliers Garden Centre, Old Barn Nurseries, Shoots Garden Centre and Turners Hill Garden Centre. commissioned to carry out major ground clearance, construct growing areas and put a path through the site. Many parents are donating plants. Children Jack and Hamish raised money by making and selling cakes.

It’s good to remember ‘Abigail, but it’s not just for her ’

Class teacher Sarah Rochester said: “The children worked in teams – a garden design team, the financial department looking at prices, a research team who looked at the type of plants and so on, and the maths specialists who measured the site and worked out how much was needed. “It’s a positive thing to help them overcome the loss of Abigail. They still talk about Abigail a lot and they talk about the project. They’re learning with a purpose. “Some of the children who wrote the letters to businesses aren’t normally children who would be particularly interested in doing lots of writing, but that week they sat and wrote and wrote and wrote.

“It’s going to be something that will be at the school for ever more and we want it to be even more than a memorial for Abigail.” Isabelle, eight, told The Resident: “Abigail was very bubbly, hardly ever upset and liked spending time with us. “It was great fun doing a whole week of the garden project. I started in the maths group and moved into the design group. “I think it’s a great idea and it’s going to look beautiful and peaceful. You could go there if you were upset or if you just wanted a bit of quiet time.” Jude, nine, said: “We’re doing this in memory of our friend. It’s good to remember Abigail, but it’s not just for her. You could think of anyone who you miss or just go there to relax. “Abigail would have liked it because of the pretty flowers in her favourite colours and because of the horse. Boys will be coming over from Forest to help with the horse, which is a nice idea.” Beth, nine, said: “We’re grateful for the people who have given money and plants. We would be very, very grateful to have more money. We’ve already had loads, but we need a lot. “It’s going to cost a lot, but it’s definitely going to be worth it.”

News in Brief Cadet on cloud nine An Air Cadet from 1140 (Steyning) Squadron took part in the RAF flypast that marked the Queen’s official birthday. Bradley Smith was selected to represent Sussex Wing – one of 70 cadets and staff from across the country – as part of the Air Cadet 70th anniversary celebrations. The 13-year-old flew in the RAF Chinook helicopter that led the flypast after taking off from RAF Odiham, Hampshire. He said “It was amazing. The best part was flying over Buckingham Palace.” If you are interested in joining the Air Cadets, you must be between 13 and 15 years old. Heights of awareness AVERT, the Horsham-based HIV/AIDS charity, will get a windfall of at least £8,000 after Greg Healey climbed Mount Everest. After his two-month expedition up the world’s highest mountain, the London businessman said: “Since establishing Village Drinks, a social networking group for gay professionals, I wanted to give something back to the community which is often so directly impacted by the reality of HIV and AIDS.” Based in Brighton Road, Horsham, AVERT is an international charity which works to provide education and care for people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. The charity supports communityled HIV/AIDS Projects based in subSaharan Africa, an information and advocacy service and www.avert.org, the most popular HIV/AIDS education and information website. Chief executive Brendan Hanlon said: “As the global economic downturn continues to have a negative effect on funding for HIV and AIDS programmes, the work of charities like AVERT becomes even more urgent. “Greg’s efforts are fantastic and we hope others are inspired to contribute to awareness about HIV and AIDS.” See www.avert.org/fundraising to make a donation or find out more.

At least 156,179 reasons for walk More than 1,000 ladies stepped out in style in Horsham, supporting St Catherine’s Hospice. The annual Midnight Walk turned Horsham Park into a sea of pink as women of all ages donned wigs, head boppers and hats before walking 13 miles through the town. They returned to the park as the sun began to rise on Sunday. An impressive total of £156,179 was pledged on the night – £10,000 more than last year. First to finish were Nicola Downing and Michelle Grayson, from Burgess Hill. Horsham ladies Andrea Bourne, Jean Cornish, Danielle Gill, Sharon

Helyer and Sarah O’Grady, aka the Horsham Superwalkers, said: “We all wanted to try to get fit and support the hospice. We’ve raised over £500 and are hoping for more.” Horsham poster girl Jan Southon, who helped encourage people to sign up in adverts at Southern railway stations, said: “My target was £600, but I’ve raised £1,130 already. I’m thrilled.” Event organiser Jen Wickham said: “There are a host of reasons why people take part. “Many walk in memory of family or loved ones who died in the care of the hospice, some for the challenge of getting fit, but all are committed

to raising money for a cause they believe in. “As an independent charity, we rely on the backing of our local communities to help us continue to provide care and support for people throughout Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey. “So whether you walked, volunteered, sponsored a friend or colleague or marshalled, we’d like to thank you as we couldn’t host such a fantastic event without you. “We’d like to thank British Red Cross for providing the first aid, Sussex RAYNET for keeping tabs on our walkers and marshals along the route, GuySalmon Gatwick for

providing a driver and sweeper vehicle and Southern Railway for helping us promote the event. “We would also like to say a huge thank you to Horsham District Council and North Horsham Parish Council for all of their support. “We are once again very grateful to the residents of Horsham and the rest of the local community for their continued support of St Catherine’s Hospice and our Midnight Walk.”

News in Brief Sports clubs targeted Police believe the same burglar or burglars broke into Horsham Trinity Cricket Club, Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club, the Sutton Winson Academy ground at Blackstone and Rookwood Golf Club. Sally Booker, spokesman for Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club, said: “Our entrance was severely damaged and they removed our safe, which was very heavy. “We do not leave a lot of cash on site, only a small float, but our junior league cricket balls were inside with a value of about £300 to the club. “They ransacked the kitchen. We feel very angry that some mindless individuals can cause so much upheaval to a small village club that is trying so hard to survive in such hard times. “All our hard work in fundraising and the generosity of our supporters will now have to be used to make amends. This has been quite a blow to us.” Cash and confectionaries were taken from the other sites after entrance doors were forced open. A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “There will be a dedicated police presence covering the district to prevent any further incidents.” Phone police on 0845 6070999, quoting serial 0345 of June 11, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

The owner of Fishers Farm, Wisborough Green, is appealing for information after a break-in during the night of Friday, June 10. Intuders opened gateways into six paddocks, releasing all of the animals into the grounds. Owner Tim Rollings said: “It is impossible to comprehend the mentality of anyone involved in this incident. It was simply a mindless act that could have had horrendous consequences.”

Two raids in Warnham Alcohol and confectionaries were taken from the cricket club at Warnham School on Monday afternoon. Police believe the same three males also stole bank cards and other items after breaking into a portable building at Warnham station soon afterwards. A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “A nine-year-old local boy has greatly assisted police with their enquiries and has been praised for his quick thinking and information.” Phone police on 0845 6070999, quoting serial 1268 of June 13.

Jennifer Simmonds is back from Space Camp in the United States

Collyer’s student Jennifer Simmonds earned the prestigious Honeywell Leadership Award during her trip to Space Camp in the United States. She was one of only eight UK students lucky enough to attend the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy at the US Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama. Jennifer, who previously attended Millais School, said: “I was really nervous at the graduation ceremony as it was attended by all the top Honeywell representatives. “There were 152 students taking part, so I was surprised and delighted to collect the overall Leadership Award.” Jennifer worked with a group of 11 other students in workshops including rocket building and DNA testing. They also got the chance to ride the Mars Simulator, which gives an

accurate idea of what it would be like to be in a buggy on the surface of Mars. Jennifer added: “The Mars Simulator was out of this world – although it was a bit bumpy over the craters!” Jackie Johnston, principal of Collyer’s, said: “Jennifer is a bright and enthusiastic member of the Collyer’s community and we are all extremely proud of her. She is clearly a star of the future.” Collyer’s students Rachel Fletcher and Hannah Baldwin won worldwide prizes for Classics at the Annual Conference of the Joint Association of Classical Teachers. Rachel won the prize for Upper Sixth Latin Translation while Hannah scooped the award for the Cultural Test. Rachel’s success meant the Malvern St James Cup went to Collyer’s for the first time. Students from Australia, France,

Italy, Spain, Andorra, Tunisia and the UK competed. More than 600 students in 20 centres took part in a video-conferencing day, which included cultural and Latin tests. Ed Tattersall, subject leader for Latin and Classical Civilisation, said: “We have a brilliant Classics group at Collyer’s, and Rachel and Hannah achieved their success against the strongest competition. “Forty-three students came on our

classical tour of Greece this Easter, another sign of the vitality of the subject and its growing popularity. It’s been a vintage year.” Principal Jackie Johnston added: “To win prizes on a global stage is a fantastic achievement and we are thrilled at Hannah and Rachel’s success. “They have relished studying Classics and Latin at Collyer’s and we’re delighted that they have done their outstanding ability justice.”

Children from Warninglid School’s Gardening Club were awarded the prize for Most Original Garden at RHS Wisley. More than 30 schools entered the competition, which involved the creation of a 1m by 1m pallet garden with an original theme. The children called their garden Come Grow With Me and grew the ingredients for a three-course meal, including soup, risotto and fruit fool. They travelled to Wisley and planted up the garden themselves ready for the judges, who included Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins. The pallet gardens went on display at Wisley. Head teacher Verena Powell said: “The standard of gardens was very high and I am thrilled for the children. “Many thanks to our premises officer, Dawn Mitchell, who runs the gardening club and entered the school for this competition. Police have revealed that a UK Border agency sign was stolen from the back of an immigration van near Piries Place car park between midday and 1.30pm last Wednesday, June 8. A Sussex Police spokesman said: “The sign is magnetic and will adhere to other vehicles. “Potentially this could have severe implications with impersonations and/or people attempting to access areas off limits to the general public. But it could have been an opportunistic prank.” Police are appealing to the thief to return the sign to a police station or somewhere easily located.

She will contest the final of The Filly Factor, organised by www. lovetheraces.com, at Ascot on July 24 after winning a semi-final at Doncaster against six other women. The sister of former champion jockey Ryan Moore said: “The other girls were brilliant so to win is incredible. MP condemns strikers Horsham MP Francis Maude has condemned teachers and other trade union members for voting to strike on June 30. The Cabinet Office minister said: “There is cross-party consensus that public sector pensions need to be made fairer and more sustainable. That is what former minister John Hutton’s report recommended and that is what we are trying to achieve. “Public sector pensions will remain among the very best, providing a guaranteed pension level for all employees. “We continue to hope that industrial action will not take place, but in the unfortunate event that it does we can assure the public now that all services have highly developed and rigorous contingency plans”. Council cuts college transport

Cllr Peter Griffiths

West Sussex County Council has announced cuts to school and college transport for post-16 students. Assistance with transport for students without special educational needs will end from this September, except for students who are already part way through a course. Many parents of students with special educational needs will be charged £360 towards transport costs when they start a new course. But this charge will not apply to lowincome families who are eligible to receive free school meals. The decisions are expected to save

the Conservative-controlled council about £300,000 and raise about £80,000 in extra income. Cllr Peter Griffiths, county council Cabinet member for education and schools, said: “After a very wide-ranging and comprehensive consultation, it has not been an easy decision to take. “It has to be seen against the background of the enormous financial challenge the county council is facing in having to find budget savings of £79 million over three years. “The budget for school transport cannot be immune to the need for

savings, but it is important to stress that the changes will not apply to families whose children are currently attending a course. “In the case of low-income families of children with special needs, they will not pay the new contribution that forms part of my decision.

The budget for school ‘transport cannot be immune to the need for savings

“Other assistance is available to a very large majority of students, such as the 3in1 scheme where the card will still be free to students from lowincome families. “Although the Education Maintenance Allowance scheme (EMA) has closed for new students, the government has announced the introduction of a 16-19 Bursary Fund. “This is expected to be channelled through schools and colleges to support vulnerable students and those from families facing financial hardship.” About 700 students in West Sussex

receive some form of financial assistance. Students with special educational needs, attending a course appropriate to their needs, currently receive transport free of charge, regardless of family income. About 300 post-16 students with special educational needs are assisted with transport and about 22 per cent of these come from low-income families. Cllr Griffiths told The Resident: “Various figures were included in the consultation and a charge of between £360 and £499 was the one that the majority of respondents felt was reasonable. “I have opted for the bottom end of that scale.” The council says many children with special needs require transport such as taxis, minibuses or wheelchair accessible vehicles, while some are able to use public transport. Cllr Griffiths added: “We are also exploring an independent travel training scheme for post-16 students and will be looking at opportunities for funding to support training currently provided through schools and colleges.” The full council report can be seen under “executive decisions” at www. westsussex.gov.uk

There was plenty for young and old alike as William Penn School, Coolham, staged a fun-filled fete. The event included a performance by the school band, a Generation Game assault course, a magician, a school dance club choreographed by Sarah Foster, a fancy dress competition and a tug of war. Parents and local businesses

donated draw prizes including a spa day for two from Beauty Secrets in Horsham, a holiday and a helicopter flight. Year 6 pupil Daisy Verhoef designed and drew the front cover of the fete programme – a detailed pencil drawing of the Beatles – and fetegoers dressed in Sixties and Seventies style as part of a vintage theme.

I’m hearing bus concerns

I am shocked and disgusted to find that this barbaric custom still takes place in England’s green and pleasant land (The Resident, June 3 and June 10). We are known to take the moral high ground on many animal rights issues – compassionate farming, bear baiting, livestock transportation. I could go on. Then I find to my horror that elephants – these most intelligent, sensitive and threatened animals – are still used to perform cheap, stupid tricks in an English circus. This is truly screamingly awful! Why isn’t every animal welfare group on the case. This should be stopped now. No threatened animal species – or even cats and dogs, for that matter – should be used for entertainment purposes. Stick to clowns and trapeze artists, if you must have a circus at all.

I would like to acknowledge the strength of feeling and efforts made by members of the community in Cowfold who organised a public meeting regarding the number 86 bus, one route among several under consideration. While I appreciate the situation people are facing is difficult, I feel I should put the situation in some context. As many of you are aware, the county council has to make savings of £79 million over the next three years. No service is immune to the budget pressure and unfortunately a £2 million reduction in bus subsidies is one of the ways we are planning to achieve this. That still leaves us spending £2.7 million a year subsidising bus journeys. The subsidy on the route in question is currently more than £5 per day for each return journey. At a time when we are having to make cuts in services like youth clubs, day centres and many other essential services, we are having to make some very tough choices indeed. We are working with several bus companies and Warden Park School to identify an alternative service for children who need to travel to school. Inevitably this may mean parents will have to pay more – closer to the actual cost of providing this service, but a much better alternative than removing the service. We are also actively investigating other community transport options for residents and are keen to support the involvement of individuals or groups who could help. I can assure you that I am listening, will continue to do so and confirm that no decisions have been made at this stage.

Carla Insull Walton Drive, Horsham

Help for Heroes I would just like to pass on a thank you from the guys for putting an article in The Resident (May 13) about us doing the Three Peaks Challenge in 24 hours for Help for Heroes. We all managed to finish within the 24-hour mark. Our times varied a little, but the slowest was 22 hours 27 minutes. I’m not sure how much we’ve raised as we’re still collecting donations, but to date we’ve got over £1,200 and with gift aid another £200+ on top. Benjamin Burchell Horsham, via email

Ex-footballer tees up charity bonanza

Ian Payne

Crawley, by 7pm on July 12. Ian, who left Horsham FC at the end of the season, said of the brothers’ task: “I know it sounds crazy, but it is also perfect for us. We are both very keen golfers and lucky enough to have the opportunity to work within the golf industry. “We see the Seve Ballesteros Foundation as the perfect charity with the golfing link and also the link with Cancer Research. “With the recent news of Seve’s death we are keen to raise as much money as possible for a truly

Brothers Kevin and Ian Payne are preparing to swing into a new challenge – six rounds of golf and 40 miles of walking in less than 40 hours. Ian, ex-player and former coach at Horsham Football Club, will join his business partner to raise money for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation in aid of Cancer Research UK. Their marathon effort will start at Mannings Heath Golf Club at 4.30am on July 11, continue at Cottesmore and Rookwood clubs and hopefully finish on the 18th at Tilgate Golf Club,

worthwhile cause. “We are under no illusion as to how difficult it will be and there is no hiding the fact that we are both carrying a little too much weight for such a marathon task. But rest assured we will give it our very best and will somehow complete the marathon. “We are incredibly grateful to the golf clubs who have offered their facilities on a complimentary basis – the Waterfall and Kingfisher Courses at Mannings Heath, Rookwood Golf Club, The Phoenix and Griffin Courses at Cottesmore and Tilgate Golf Club.”

Sharon Baldwin, area volunteer manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “We are delighted that Kevin, Ian and Inspire Golf have chosen to support Cancer Research UK and the Seve Ballesteros Foundation. “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer. “We have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters, without whom we would not be able to fund outstanding scientists, doctors and nurses.”

Hypnotherapy has been praised in the local and national press several times in the last few weeks. Recent studies show that Breast Cancer patients recover more quickly when using hypnosis (Absolute Radio, 14.06.2011), Hypnobirthing can help the mother to have a drug-free labour with a quicker recovery and cuts caesarean rates (BBC News, 19.05 2011) and Irritable Bowel Symptoms can be completely stopped in 4 out of 10 patients (BBC News, 18.03.2011) Clinical Hypnotherapy is an incredibly effective way to change thought and behaviour processes and is the most powerful form of relaxation. It’s a natural daydreaming state that we all fall into several times a day. Such times as when we are about to fall asleep or when we seem to have ‘drifted off’ somewhere else. In this natural state of relaxation

our minds are more open to suggestion as our mind takes a rest and our subconscious mind comes forward to listen and act upon the positive suggestions we are given. How the cash rained in at school’s fete Visitors to the Friends of Ingfield Manor’s fete defied persistent rain in Five Oaks to raise more than £10,000. Friends chairman Don Newport said: “Umbrellas were up! Sales of umbrellas were a true record, but what is really remarkable is that people came, enjoyed themselves and went deep into their pockets to support the school. “Our thanks are due to parent Gary Larkin for supplying us with so many umbrellas for sale, which set the tone for a profitable day.” The Friends were helped by the opening party of Scope chief executive Richard Hawkes, Horsham MP

Francis Maude and school supporter Dame Vera Lynn. Dame Vera encouraged everyone to enjoy their afternoon, ignore the rain and leave with empty wallets. Attractions included the West Sussex Youth Big Band, a demonstration of martial arts by Rikkyo School, Horsham Bluebelle Majorettes, the Companion dog show run by Ann Penny and The Manor steam railway run by Chris Knibbs. Mr Newport added: “A huge thank you goes to everyone who helped in preparation and on the day. They have shown such fortitude and helped raise an amazing amount.” Head teacher Alistair Bruce said: “I can’t thank the Friends enough. What they achieve is so important. They fund such a variety of essential items as well as those ‘extras’ that add so much to the lives of our pupils. “To see their hard work so rewarded is very gratifying indeed, especially in the circumstances this year.” Run by Scope, Ingfield Manor School is a day and weekly boarding school for primary and secondary aged pupils with cerebral palsy. The attached Dame Vera Lynn Trust School for Parents works with children aged up to and including five and their families.

Visit Horsham website goes mobile A new app means the town’s leading business directory, local offers and news from The Resident are available on the go James Hood Business Editor

james@the-resident.co.uk

Since it was created, the Visit Horsham website has been at the forefront of online technology and has used it to bring people in Horsham the latest news and information. The site was the first to provide aerial photography of the district, the first to feed live parking space information for the town centre and is believed to be the first site to include the option to send a ‘like’ to Facebook from an external website. And now, Visit Horsham has launched its own app, which Android users can

download from today, Friday. The app means people with Android devices will be able to view offers from companies around the town as well as the website’s business directory and news from The Resident while on the go, using their mobile device. Visit Horsham’s owner, Gavin Hewins, said: “This app will provide a really valuable resource for people living in or visiting Horsham as well as the businesses which operate here. The technology we’ve used means it will provide up-to-date, useful information for users, at the touch of a button.” The directory function on the app uses the information from Visit

Horsham’s website, meaning it is continually updated by the businesses listed. It also uses groundbreaking technology, called ‘Crowdsource’, which gives users the facility to inform Visit Horsham when information is incorrect and in need of updating. All of which is helping to ensure that the new application is as current and useful as possible. From the directory, users can also link to maps and locations for a particular business or vendor, making it easier to find the services they want. The offers section of the app will mean users can take advantage of promotions posted by local shops, restaurants and other businesses. It is something that Dominic Wakefield, from Wakefields jewellers believes is an exciting development for the town. He said: “I’ve seen the app and think it’s fantastic. Anything that promotes the town and makes it easier for people to navigate around can only be a good thing. It’s great that Visit Horsham seems to be so advanced when it comes to implementing technology like this”. Dominic also believes there are benefits for businesses as well as users. He told The Resident: “It’s an exciting opportunity for local companies and retail outlets to push information to people that actually want it. It has so much potential”. The news function of the app will provide live feeds from The Resident’s website, with all the latest local news, business, entertainment and sport. So people who download it can find out what’s going on, wherever they are. The app can be downloaded for free from Android Market, the online store for Android mobile applications. Any businesses that are registered with the website, or would like to be in future, will be featured on the app automatically. The development of the new app is a significant milestone for the Visit Horsham website. But it is just the beginning according to Gavin. He said: “We are continually working on the application to make sure people can get the most out of it. The next phase will be to introduce a search function and in the future we hope to provide other services such as a booking and ordering facility and event information. We are also open to suggestions from users and businesses, which has helped us develop the service in the past”. Gavin added that the site has always been one that has grown as a result of input from the community and that the philosophy behind the app is the same. “The content on

Visit Horsham has always been led by what the public finds most useful and what businesses provide. The app is the same. I hope that people find it equally as helpful, informative and entertaining”, he said. Visit Horsham is the premier online resource for everything you need to know about the town. Since it was introduced, the site has responded to changes in the market place and consumer demand. The site was the first in the area to persuade West Sussex County Council to allow it to use the live data about Horsham’s car parking spaces, following the backing of Francis Maude. It has a comprehensive list of contents including what’s on guides, property, tourist, crime and business information as well as up-to-theminute news, supplied by The Resident. The site gets an average of 120,000 views per month and also operates a popular and interactive Facebook page. For more information visit www.visithorsham.co.uk

Calibre Comms comes to town A Sussex telecoms business is growing and has chosen Horsham as its new home An independent telecommunications company has moved to new offices on Worthing Road in Horsham. Calibre Comms was established over a decade ago and provides businesses with telephony services, advice, equipment and maintenance. 10 years on, managing director and founder Mick Watts is still at the helm, and told The Resident: “Calibre Comms’ Horsham office represents a new stage in our company’s development offering us a presence in the local community. “We already deal with a number of companies in the Horsham area and are looking forward to working with more businesses by introducing them to the new technological advancements telecoms has to offer and the cost savings they can bring. It will also serve as a base for us to expand further in the South East.” Calibre Comms has always been

committed to providing an excellent service and many of the firm’s customers have been with them from the beginning. Anne Snelling, new business manager, commented: “We unravel information about our customers’ technology so they can really understand what is best for them and the benefits it can bring. Plus, our engineers love what they do. This has all meant we’ve created a business people can trust and are loyal to.” Calibre Comms not only helps businesses understand telecommunications better, but can also save them money. It can also help customers get the most out of their current systems, as well as helping manage a move. For more information about how Calibre Comms can help your organisation or for a free appraisal, contact Anne Snelling at anne.snelling@calibrecoms.com or on 01323 400815.

In the second of her two-part column on getting your business off the ground with a limited budget, Dee Blick talks about the importance of getting to know your customers first. Dee is an award-winning, Horsham-based businesswoman, a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Marketing and has 26 years’ experience in the industry.

Marketing on a shoestring for start-ups – part 2 Dee Blick www.theblickblog.co.uk

You’ve got a burning idea that won’t go away. It’s keeping you awake at night and, it’s distracting you during the day. Yes, the time has arrived for you to step into the unknown and start your own business. Having worked with many small businesses in the last 26 years I know that the time when you are most at risk of wasting money is when you’re starting out. In my experience, you don’t always have to invest huge sums of money in order to build a very successful business. But you do need to invest time and you must get up close and personal to the heartbeat of your potential customers so you know what drives them; what makes them buy. Spending time researching the people that are going to buy from you and exploring in detail what you are going to offer them is time that’s never, ever wasted. It takes more than a great idea to make a business successful. Start with the basics, answering the pivotal question; what am I going to sell? Regard your product or service as a diamond, with many facets. Describe each element of what you are offering in painstaking detail.

You’re going to be communicating some of this detail through your marketing communications. Then it’s time to consider potential customers. What are their needs for your offering? Where are they based? Who makes the decision to buy and what is their decision making process? What might stop them from buying? If you don’t know where to start, follow my approach. I have recently taken a new client on, an international brand that specialises in selling air suspension. Although I have learnt about their products, I had to find out what makes motorhome owners (the first group we are targeting) buy air suspension. So, I visited a motorhome park in Eastbourne last week and spent the entire day chatting to motorhome owners, recording the precious nuggets of their feedback in painstaking detail. People love to talk about themselves when they can see that you are interested in learning from them instead of selling to them. I found out the benefits they regard as important when considering air suspension and as a consequence I have developed three powerful creative campaigns that are not just ‘irrelevant brilliance’. Sometimes, the answer is right under your nose.

You can use the free market research services that are available at Crawley Library too including buying prospect lists for as little as 20 prospects. Research completed, it’s time to compose your positioning statement - the compelling benefits that will make you irresistible to each one of the groups you are targeting. When you begin the process of actually marketing your business, you will be referring to your positioning statement. Only write it after your market research so it is grounded in reality. Finally, keep the faith. There will be times when you will question your sanity and your ability to run a business. Have the courage of your convictions and I will be back with more shoestring tips next month. Dee Blick writes for a number of publications including the Financial Mail Women’s forum. Her first book has been in the top three ‘small business marketing books’ on Amazon.co.uk for two years. Dee’s second book, The Ultimate Small Business Marketing Book, will be released at the end of the month. Follow Dee at theblickblog.co.uk

If you know someone of any age who needs caring for in their own home, Gozone may be able to provide the services you are looking for. Established more than 10 years ago, Gozone offers round-the-clock care for anyone who needs help and support to live a more independent life. That includes the elderly and people suffering from alzheimer’s, dementia and other physical difficulties, as well as support for families with children who have learning difficulities. Gozone helps people to enjoy a better quality of life, while respecting their privacy and dignity. The business was founded by Yvonne Sturt, who has 30 years’ experience as a carer and daycare coordinator. Due to the popularity of the service, Gozone has expanded from Pulborough to Billingshurst and there are now 45 carers working for the company. Yvonne’s two sons, Zane and Liam, are also part of the team, making Gozone a family business. The service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, working with private clients and social services. Together, the team covers 30 square miles from Horsham to Arundel and Washington to Midhurst. The care provided includes assisting with getting up and putting

to bed, cooking meals, overseeing medication, laundry duties, shopping duties, respite care, companionship, taking clients to appointments and organising of social activities. Gozone also prides itself on the trust and confidence that their clients have in them. All staff members are chosen carefully and their backgrounds are checked with the criminal investigations bureau records (CRB) and safeguarding of vulnerable adults (SOVA).

The team also uses a sophisticated, secure logging system, which allows carers to electronically log their arrival at a client’s home using the customer’s phone. This is also done when they leave and the system can offer peace of mind to clients or their loved ones. Care can be for as little as 30 minutes a week or up to 24 hours a day and each client is assessed to determine the level of care that is right for them.

Singer’s Proud performance Gig Guide Horsham Area

Rising star from Sussex achieves success in the city with a show at an iconic music venue James Hood Entertainment Editor

james@the-resident.co.uk

London pride: Alice Ella

Alice Ella, the Horsham-based singer and songwriter, has been performing in London again, following the success of her set at Ronnie Scott’s in April. Alice wowed audiences on the main stage at Proud, the famous venue for quality live music, in Camden. Joined by two new guitarists, Stefan Child and Henry Child, Alice took to the stage with a mic stand decorated with a giant pink rose. Together they performed a 45-minute set, which included the songs Alice penned herself, including Fly, Speak, Easy, Daisy Chains, You Got Me So Good, Day Dreamer, The Tiger In Me, Koko, Acapella, and I Spy. The show was made up of a mix of up beat catchy songs, jazzy pop

Bands, beer and a BBQ

numbers and slow beautiful haunting songs, some of which are accompanied by Alice on the piano. Alice said: “The night went fantastically and it was such a thrill playing at an iconic venue like Proud. We are performing there again on June 23 in the South Gallery. And we can’t wait!” If you can’t get to London, see Alice playing at The Tanners Arms in Horsham on June 30 from 9pm. The Proud venue is set in a 200 year-old Grade II Listed building that has been painstakingly restored. It is known for booking the very best in live entertainment and has hosted performances by stars including Dizzee Rascal, The Kooks, Stereophonics, and Johnny Borrell. The bar has become popular with celebrities and musicians including Amy Winehouse, Carl Barat, and Arctic Monkeys. Peach Entertainment provided the sounds, stage and marquees for the music. The audience was treated to renowned Abba tribute act Abba Inferno which acted as headliners for the show, bringing the house down at the end of the day. There were also local acts Not Dave, The UK Rideouts, The Slabs, Joe 90 and Chinchilla Zilla who sang popular cover songs from Rolling Stones and others. Eighteen year-old singer and songwriter, Lauren Bayross Payne, also wowed the crowds with a selection of her self-penned tracks. St Catherine’s Hospice representatives were present at the event and visitors had the opportunity to donate to the charity. The event concluded with a spectacular finale or fireworks.

The village of Colgate is situated in the high weald of Sussex, some four miles north-east of Horsham and in the midst of St Leonards Forest. The parish has a population of around 800. The main road through the village is Forest Road, which follows the route of a prehistoric ridgeway and would have connected Ashdown Forest with the coast via the Adur valley gap. This trackway is known as ‘Margary VI’ and local finds from the Mesolithic and Bronze Age periods support this. Colgate possibly derives its name from Godelene de la Collegate who was recorded to live in the area in 1276, on the Horsham tax roll at the time. The family name means ‘the charcoal dweller who lives by the gate’ and has obvious connections with the local iron industry that existed. The plentiful supply of ironstone and timber to supply the necessary heat for the smelting period made this area ideal. This was known as the ‘bloomery period’ as the stone was heated in an ordinary furnace and the iron formed into ‘blooms’. But it was during the Tudor era, in the mid 16th century, that the water-powered furnaces and forges came into use, producing a much higher quality iron that was required for the guns and cannons for the Elizabethan wars with Spain. The legacy of this period are the many furnace and hammer ponds that now grace our forest valleys. St Leonards Forest was a popular haunt of smugglers and highwaymen during the 17th and 18th centuries. A story was published in London in 1614 reporting that a ‘fearsome serpent’ or dragon lived in the forest near Faygate. This tale could well have been circulated to keep strangers away from the sensitive areas of the forest frequented by the smugglers. The name of our village pub, The Dragon, reminds us of this famous legend. One of the oldest surviving buildings in Colgate is probably Stone Cottage in Forest Road which dates from the 17th century and is believed to have originally been the tollgate keepers’ cottage. The toll gate is shown on Budgens map of Sussex of 1796. Most of the other older houses in the village date from the Victorian period and many were built for workers from the nearby Holmbush estate, the mansion there being built by Thomas Broadwood in 1823. During the Victorian period there were many local brickworks including one at Holmbush, and it is likely that many

of the houses here were built with bricks made on the estate. Our parish church is St Saviours on Forest Road, which was built in 1871 on the site of an earlier building. The original school at Colgate was situated at the top of Blackhouse Road opposite to Mars Hill Cottage. It was built around the same time as the church on church land and was known as the St Saviours Schools. The school was run from this building until 1915 when the present County Council school was built in Blackhouse Road. After this date the original building was used as the community Village Hall until its untimely end at the hands of a lone German bomber pilot in 1940. He had somehow mistaken the road junction there for Horsham Station and made three bombing raids, with tragic consequences. His attack killed five local people and left a scene of havoc, with several buildings totally destroyed and many others severely damaged. After the war the local residents raised money through jumble sales and other community events to build our present village hall, which was finally opened on May 30, 1953, just in time for the celebrations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Our village shop sadly closed in the 1960s, but we still have our church, our village Primary School, The Dragon and our Village Memorial Hall, all which help to keep our community spirit alive and flourishing.

Colgate Village Fete - 26th June 2011 The dragon is a great family run pub serving real ales and traditional pub food with an extensive garden ideal for functions throughout the summer months with mini marquees available. Alternate Thursday either quiz or open mic nights.

The Village Fete The annual village Summer fete, which has a history going back over 100 years, is now held in the grounds of the Village Memorial Hall at the junction of Forest Road and Blackhouse Road. The history of our village fete is tied in closely with the village school. Prior to the fete being held at the hall, it was for some time held at the nearby mansion of Coombe Wood, whose owner, Mrs Thomas, opened up the grounds once a year for the village to hold its school sports day and fete. Our village fete is still a traditional village fete, with all the regular stalls and events that you would expect. You will find that it has that special village atmosphere with the village hall committee and many local residents running stalls and helping out on the day. We will have a jazz band to keep everyone’s feet tapping and there will lots of stalls and events to keep the whole family busy. Stalls will include pony rides, coconut shy, tombola, magician, bouncy castle, balloon race, lucky dip, bowling, face painting, bric a brac, books, garden plants and many more. There will also be cream teas and ice creams available in the hall and a BBQ for those with a larger appetite! This year the fete will be opened at 1.30pm by the chairman of Crawley Town Football Club, Vic Marley. Crawley Town, who this year have been promoted to the Football League, have generously donated a selection of match tickets, including Executive Suite tickets, for an instant auction at the fete. Events during the afternoon start at 2pm with a fancy dress competition for the under10s. This year the theme will be ‘animals’ and the first boys and girls prizes will be judged on home made costumes, but ALL children will receive a nice prize. At 2.30pm there will be an instant auction, followed at 3pm by a demonstration of country dancing by pupils of Colgate Primary School. A magic show for the

children will be held at 3.30pm, with the Grand Raffle draw taking place at 4pm. All in all, we can promise you a busy and fun afternoon for all the family. All funds raised will go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the building which has survived very well since it was built in 1953, so in just two years’ time we will be celebrating its 60th anniversary! Colgate would like to thank all of this year’s generous sponsors for their support, helping us to continue to hold this historic community event. Our thanks go out to Faygate Rennaisance Retirement Village, Saxon Weald, Crawley Town Football Club, GW Bridges, The Dragon, Colgate; Holmbush Fencing; Addspeed Horsham; Holmbush Farm World; Newhouse Farm PYO; The Cabin, Faygate; Springfield Lane Kennels; Lynx Tyres; DJE Safety Consultants; the Black Swan, Pease Pottage and Carylls Country House, Faygate. So come along and enjoy the fun and atmosphere of a traditional village fete on June 26.

A great new force in the South-East Two very familiar names have joined forces; two of the region’s most respected firms of Estate Agents and Chartered Surveyors, Batcheller Thacker and Monkhouse & Bannisters have merged and the new firm is now known as Batcheller Monkhouse. Individually the two firms had enviable reputations for great local knowledge and unmatched professionalism and the merger has brought those qualities together. Batcheller Monkhouse is now a sizeable concern, which can offer a truly comprehensive service to its clients – both in residential estate agency and rural and agricultural property consultancy. Batcheller Monkhouse has offices working for clients across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, and that broader reach really capitalises on the Partners’ and staff’s regional strengths. All the staff of the two old firms have been retained – there have been no redundancies – and the only physical change is that as the two firms both had offices in Haywards Heath, Batcheller Monkhouse has consolidated the business into one - what was the Batcheller Thacker premises at 67-69 The Broadway. Charles Thacker has become the Managing Partner of the new firm. He comments, “We wanted to bring the two firms together to create a single, larger and more effective firm, which can offer a more comprehensive service for our clients, together with broader geographical coverage. “The two firms fitted together perfectly, with their complementary mix of agency and professional work, as did the experience and skills of the partners and staff. “This is a very exciting move, and I’m sure that local people will get used to the new name – and our new logo – very quickly. The property and rural market in the South East has bounced back very well from the trauma of 2008 and this is a great part of the country to be based. We are really looking forward to greeting our clients, new and old, and showing them that as the largest independent firm of its type in the region we can offer a better service than ever.”

The Estate Agent

Ross Attwood BA (hons) Partner Harper James

Q A

How long should I sign up with my estate agent for?

Long enough to enable them to fully promote your property but short enough so that if they do not perform as promised, you have the option of extricating yourself from their agreement and going elsewhere. Too many estate agents are now asking clients to sign agency agreements of between 12 and 24 weeks length; sometimes without the owner even realizing! Surely they don’t all believe their own bad press and think they have to tie-down their clients for that long to give themselves half a chance of selling the property; if your agent is competent, professional and pro-active then I am sure you will stick with them through thick and thin as long as they are constantly updating you on progress, marketing and feedback until a sale is achieved. This begs the question therefore, as to why an estate agent would want to tie their vendor down to a contract for months on end with no get-out clause? The answer is that it is costs very little for them to simply take a few snaps, upload your house onto various property websites and move onto the next new instruction; working on the basis that a certain percentage will sell by themselves - they have little incentive to do anything else as they know they have the owner over a barrel due to the 3-4 months contract period! At Harper James we do not insist on a specific contract length. We work with each client on an individual basis and the contract is tailored to each individuals needs accordingly. As long as we are doing our job properly, clients stick with us until their property is sold; however long it takes. We are more motivated to keep providing our excellent service right up until exchange of contracts because every client is precious to us and we appreciate that they have no obligation to stay with us so providing a win-win situation for all concerned. Therefore why take the risk of signing a lengthy contract? It merely highlights the agent’s lack of faith in their own abilities and means you could be stuck with them unsold until Guy Fawkes night! If you are contemplating putting your house on the market and would appreciate a market appraisal or would like an answer to any property-related question, please call me on 01403 732727 or email ‘rossattwood@ harper-james.co.uk’. Q A

What is happening to interest rates generally and mortgage products?

Early on in the year there were signs that the Bank of England were preparing to raise interest rates. Back in March we were predicting a 0.5% rise to hit in June, but that was before rising fuel and commodity prices started to hit the global economy and also before the terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The Bank of England Monetary Policy committee were moving towards raising interest rates but they appear to have cooled off in the recent months. Our expectation is that rates are going to remain low and there is a potential that they will be kept at 0.5% for the rest of this year. Whilst this gives some obvious problems to savers the benefit to mortgage borrowers is great. It is not uncommon to see 5 year fixed rates being offer at less than 5%, this is however still heavily dependent upon either the equity in the house, for remortgage purposes, or the size of the deposit for house purchase. The decision to fix or to take a tracker remains a personal one. If your view is that interest rates are to remain low for this year and are then likely to increase at a steady rate during 2012 then there is a good case for the tracker rate product. However if you are seeking stability of payment and the benefit of being able to plan your monthly household expenses the fixed rate may be more suited to you. As ever it is important to get a balanced and unbiased view of both the market in general, the available mortgage products and the wider economic forecast before you jump either way. We continue to advise caution before you commit yourself to a product without taking specialist advice, this is especially important when arranging a mortgage via the internet or a telephone banking service. To find out more information about the mortgage products that are now available, please contact me on 01403 268562. Alternatively if you would like to ask a question, please e-mail info@mercierallen.co.uk. Please note that this article does not constitute as advice, anyone seeking independent advice should contact an independent financial adviser. Q

We are buying a new house in Horsham from a property developer and our solicitor says this developer wants to hold the 10% deposit we have to pay on exchange of contracts and claims that this is risky. He says it’s the developer’s solicitor who should retain the deposit “as stakeholder”. We’re worried that an argument about this means we will lose the house. The developer seems genuine and is also NHBC registered. What would be your advice on this matter?

A

When contracts are exchanged the deposit is usually held by the seller’s solicitor “as stakeholder” and does not belong to either seller or you until completion. However frequently when a developer is building a new property he may want the deposit held by his solicitor “as agent”, which means it can be passed on to, and used by, the developer. There is a risk because the developer might get into financial difficulties and your deposit in this case might be lost. However as your developer is registered with the National House Building Council (NHBC) your deposit will be protected if your developer becomes financially broke after exchange of contracts, so your solicitor shouldn’t be concerned. If the developer wasn’t registered with the NHBC and there was no other type of building agreement providing deposit security in the event of liquidation then your solicitor would be right to maintain that your deposit must be held by the developer’s solicitors “as stakeholder”. Hope this helps and I wish you the very best of luck with your purchase. Should you have any questions, please email duncanjagger@harper-james.co.uk

Do you own the Classic Car of the Year? Olli Nott Motors Reporter

olli@the-resident.co.uk

The search is on to find the UK’s Classic Car of the Year 2011. Classic car owners are being invited to enter their pride and joy in a nationwide competition, organised by Classic Car Weekly, Classic Cars and Practical Classics magazines. The winner will receive a fantastic first prize valued at over £3,500 with over £700 worth of runners up prizes up for grabs. The competition, in association with Lancaster Insurance, is open to any car made before 1990. There are no restrictions on the number of cars owners can enter – if they are lucky enough to own more than one classic car, then all the vehicles can be included. An expert judging panel will evaluate the entrants on their individual merits as well as awarding extra points for going to extraordinary lengths to rebuild a car, his or her fascinating history and tales of any incredible journeys undertaken. They will also be looking for cars that are part of the family, those used every day and those that have been obtained after a lengthy search or

quest. From this information and imagery provided, the panel will then shortlist 20 cars from each category and invite the public to vote for their favourite. It will be the public who decide the winner and the runners up of each category. The winning cars will then go on display at the Classic Motor Show at Birmingham’s NEC from 11th to 13th November where the overall winner with the most votes will be revealed and the grand prize awarded. The eventual winner of the title will receive a unique trophy as well as a mountain of prizes including a year’s free comprehensive car insurance up to a value of £300 from Lancaster Insurance and weekend tickets to the Classic Motor Show including hotel accommodation. Runners up will also receive a year’s free comprehensive car insurance up to a value of £300 from Lancaster Insurance as well as weekend tickets for the Classic Motor Show and hotel accommodation. The first Classic Car of the Year competition held in 2010 was won by Amy Clements with her 1954 Jowett Jupiter SC which she had owned for over 30 years. Does anyone have a Classic Car you’d like to enter into the draw for

the title? Follow the simple instructions below and let me know if you’ve entered! Classic car owners can enter via

the competition website (www.ccoty. co.uk) or by sending details of the car, a brief history, full contact details and up to three images to Classic Car of

the Year, Media House, Lynchwood, Peterborough, PE2 6EA. The closing date for entries is 31st July. Best of luck!

Vauxhall’s sizzling summer savings Summer savings just got hotter as Vauxhall can now offer customers 20 per cent off a brand new Vauxhall. Buyers can expect savings of nearly £5,000 on the Brit-built Astra Sports Tourer or drive away a new Corsa 5-door SRi 1.7 CDTi 16v and save £3,465. In this summer’s ‘Vauxhall Countdown’ event, customers can get 20 per cent off the list price, before options, on a majority of Vauxhall’s most popular models − as well as the entire genuine Vauxhall accessory range − when a car is ordered or registered between June 17 and July 18 this year. Scorching savings can be had by customers wanting to move up market too. Choose an Insignia VXR Nav 2.8i V6 24v Turbo 4x4 Auto and savings start from £7,165. For customers on a tighter budget a top of the range Agila SE 1.2 16v ecoFLEX now costs only £9,851, a saving of £2,274. And, for families after great value holiday wheels, the Meriva ticks all the right boxes from as little as £13,141, saving £3,064. Buyers can also kit out their new car and benefit from 20% off on any genuine Vauxhall accessory when purchasing their vehicle via the Countdown offer. For example, connect your iPod to your car and listen to your favourite music by purchasing Vauxhall’s iPod

connectivity accessory for just £104. All prices include fitting, so no hidden costs. Better still, Countdown means that fitting a high quality bike carrier will now cost just £52 and to make your journey a real breeze, a Garmin satnav is only £88. Buyers can also save up to £130 on a set of 17-inch alloys while a set of privacy shades cost just £33.60 (including fitting and centre caps). What’s more, all cars in Vauxhall’s range come with a Lifetime Warranty (or up to 100,000 miles) available to the first owners. This is supported by 12 months’ Vauxhall Assistance

breakdown cover and six years’ body panel anti-perforation warranty. “Vauxhall Countdown is a nononsense 20 per cent discount that applies across almost all models in our range as well as our full range of accessories,” said Peter Hope, Vauxhall’s Marketing Director. “It has instant appeal for all our customers and makes ownership of some of our latest, award-winning cars even more attractive than before.” If you ever needed an excuse to buy a Vauxhall; THIS is the time to do it. Drop in to Stevens Vauxhall in Broadbridge Heath and check out some of the amazing deals.

Henry stars with bat and ball Martin Read Cricket

Horsham moved up to second in the table, 13 points clear of champions Preston Nomads, after a hard-fought draw at leaders Hastings. Horsham enjoyed the better of the encounter after posting 243-7, thanks to 56 not out from overseas player Matt Henry and 47 by skipper Craig Gallagher. Jason Finch took 2-55, Josh Poysden 2-57 and new Sussex signing Kirk Wernars 2-70. Unbeaten Hastings were unable to break free from some tight bowling, the visitors not quite being able to force a win in the face of a defiant 61 not out from Max Finzel and 41 by Jason Finch. Henry captured 4-68 and former Somerset leg-spinner Mike Munday 2-52 on his debut.

Roffey travelled to Three Bridges, who had only managed one win from their previous six games. But the hosts notched up a formidable 285-3, courtesy of 92 from Hisam-Ul-Haq, 77 not out from James Chadburn and an unbeaten 64 from skipper Danny Alderman. Andy McGorian took 2-78. Roffey started promisingly with a first-wicket stand of 48, but three more wickets fell at the same score. A stand of 134 enabled Roffey to reach the comfort of 182-4, Amir Khan top scoring with 71 and Mike Norris making 59, before the final six wickets fell for just 20 runs.

202

Three Bridges won by 83 runs

Disappointed against his former club, Roffey skipper Norris said: “We were never really in contention. “We were unable to make sufficient inroads into the opposition’s batting and we kept losing wickets at regular intervals.” Roffey’s encounter with the Sussex Cricket Board Development XI on Sunday was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Horsham entertain Brighton and Hove at Cricketfield Road tomorrow (Saturday) while struggling Pulborough visit Roffey in a Horsham district derby.

Why Broadbridge Heath attracts the tourists Martin Read Cricket

Broadbridge Heath’s ground at The Top Common in Byfleets Lane, neighbouring Shelley’s Field Place birthplace, is a bijou arena for cricket. Framed by a horseshoe screen of mature trees, it is an attractive venue for touring clubs. The visit of a team brought over by former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Barry Jarman, who skippered his country against England at Headingley, is still fondly remembered. The official foundation date of the club is 1898, but a newspaper report mentions a match against Roffey Park five years earlier and there is evidence of other cricket on the village common as early as 1775. Originally the club played behind The Shelley Arms. Then the opposition was from sides in the immediate area because transport, by foot or

No chance of play last Winter

bicycle, was difficult. In the early 1900s the club played junior cricket against Slinfold, Horsham Albion Boys, Horsham Grammar School, St Mark’s Choir and Five Oaks. About 50 years ago there were problems in getting enough young members. Ten years later, fears for the future of the club prompted a merger with Merryfield CC, who were thriving but had no ground. This strategy succeeded as fixtures increased and, recognising the opportunities presented by the expansion of the village, a second XI was formed. In 1982 a replacement pavilion was erected. Today the enthusiasm of the colts is unquestionable. Broadbridge Heath has junior teams, each with a dedicated manager, playing a wide range of matches in the IDentilam League and competing in the Sussex Junior Festival, six-aside competitions and friendlies. The Saturday first and second XIs play in the Sussex Invitation League,

the firsts narrowly missing promotion last season. The Sunday side contests a full list of friendlies, using the all-weather pitch in late Summer, and there are occasional midweek fixtures as the season progresses. To ease pressure on the square, some junior games are played at Warnham. Chairman Tim Wells, who has been with Broadbridge Heath for almost 30 years, said: “There are no superstars – we all enjoy playing for the team and each other. It is a lovely ground and everyone appreciates playing here.” Like all clubs, Broadbridge Heath faces challenges. One is the proposed extensive development of the village some distance away. Another is providing sufficient opportunities for the most talented players, some of whom have moved on to play at the highest level locally, an excellent tribute to the standard of training. Fred Bridges, 20, is the leading qualified coach and assists John Burroughs, cricket development officer for Horsham District Council, with the training of colts. Bridges, a bowling all-rounder, plays for Heath and has been selected for the Surrey and England Physical Disability teams. Dad David is club groundsman. Secretary Colin Case, keeping wicket after 40 years at the club, said: “The ‘senior pros’ keep the right attitude and enthusiasm going and maintain a good balance with the emerging colts.” A major project is promotion of community spirit with other local sports organisations, by enhancing the activities provided in the village. A recent example of this was the

Broadbridge Heath CC

stoolball tournament at the ground – appropriately won by the cricketers – in competition with the football and tennis clubs and The Shelley Arms. The event raised funds for the roller appeal and organiser Sally Booker described it as “a great success with demands for a 2012 replay”. She is developing other events while husband Nathan, a second XI stalwart, helps prepare the ground. Clearly cricket is taken seriously

with a commitment to providing the best possible facilities in a pleasant village atmosphere. But, the family-orientated club has plenty of lighter moments, including barbecues, fun days and the celebrated club dinner. Tim Wells (07740 101983) will be pleased to hear from prospective new players of all ages. Break-in at club: See Page 5

Reg Hook Youth Athletics

Horsham athletes scooped more than a dozen titles with some cracking performances at the 78th Sussex Schools Championships. The championships are also used as selection for the Sussex Schools team that will travel to Gateshead for the English Schools Championships next month. Sussex are limited to just 60 athletes, who should have achieved a standard in their event, for the trip to Gateshead. Many of Saturday’s winners at Crawley will have to wait for a few days before they know whether or not they have been selected. A blustery wind affected many of the track times, but a fighting run from Alex Best (Tanbridge House) in the Intermediate (U17) Boys 400m will certainly have caught the selectors’ eyes. He timed his race perfectly to surge down the home straight and win in 52.4, adding the schools title to the county crown he won last month. Stepping up to the Intermediate age group, Horsham Blue Star’s Cadie Willis (The Weald) beat the reigning champion in the 100m, clocking a nippy 12.8 into a headwind. Like Best, she had also won the county title last month. Fellow Weald athlete Lauren Milnthorpe dominated the Intermediate 300m hurdles, finishing five seconds clear of her nearest rival and inside the schools standard in 46.52. Younger brother Jack gained a silver medal in the junior high jump, clearing 1.58m. Another hurdler in fine form was Christ’s Hospital’s Nick Ofonagoro, runner-up in the English Schools Intermediate hurdles last year. Making his first appearance this season over the hurdles, he coped well with the higher barriers in the Senior (U19) 110m and gained a

schools standard as he swept to a convincing victory in 14.9. Fellow Christ’s Hospital athlete Gideon Hammond also achieved a standard when he won the senior shot putt with 13.31m. Blue Star’s Holly Webb achieved a schools standard and a personal best when winning the senior javelin with 37.15m. In the Junior Boys events, Forest’s Bruce Foster and Richard Mason both struck gold, winning the 200m (24.7) and pole vault (2.70m) respectively. Tanbridge House’s Molly Adams, whose mother Rebecca was a former Sussex Schools and Sussex County champion, was an impressive winner of the Junior 200m in 26.8.

Horsham’s new coach was beaten to the top job by the man who appointed him. UEFA A qualified coach Hugo Langton was interviewed for the manager’s job before new boss Justin Luchford contacted him to offer a key role in the management team. Langton, 36, is a former assistant at Ashford Town and ex-coach at Thamesmead Town. Chief executive John Lines said: “Hugo was interviewed for the manager’s job and seriously considered. We’ve got the best of both worlds.” Langton told www.hornetsreview. co.uk: “I have done some research into the supporters here, the Lardy Boys, and from what I have been told they are proper supporters. “We’ll need them to really get behind us this season. In return, we hope to give them a team to be proud of.” Horsham YMCA’s AGM will be held at the club on Monday, July 18 (7.30pm).

Youth Football Pre-season training for Horsham YMCA U18 will begin on Thursday, June 30 (7pm), as the club prepares for midweek fixtures in the Ryman Youth League. New and existing players are welcome. Contact assistant manager Neil Vanson on 07843 586689.

Horsham lost 77-55 in the annual visit to Bishopric of the Sussex County Vice-Presidents. Captain Robin Machell said: “We always enjoy the visit of the VPs, but it is rare for us to get a win. Bill Monckton did very well to skip his rink of Dave Thomas, Brian Corkhill and Tony Venn to a win by one shot, but he was our only winning rink.” Other results: Horsham 27 Popes Mead 90, Horsham 67 Long Stratton Tourists 97.

10 medals for Atlantis ace Kate Andrew Dunlop Youth Swimming

Kate Windle achieved two national qualifying times (NQTs) during a series of fantastic performances on the second weekend of the South East Regional Age Group Championships. The young Atlantis star added five medals to the five she won on the first weekend of competition at the K2, Crawley – golds in the 200m breast, 400m IM and 200m back, a silver in the 100m free and bronze in the 200m free. Not surprisingly she emerged as the top 10-year-old girl in the region by a decisive margin. The highlights were powerful swims in the 200m breast and 400m IM. In the 200m breast she moved smoothly through the gears to go well clear of her competition, recording an impressive 44 seconds in the final 50m to smash through the NQT by more than three seconds. Now full of confidence, she repeated the feat in the next race by completing the 400m IM nearly a second

inside the NQT, in an event she had not been targeting for this. Her achievement was all the more impressive as she had to achieve 11-year-old NQTs as she is not quite 11 yet. Beth Britton, 12, was another Atlantis swimmer who performed impressively and with great courage. She suffered the heartbreak of missing out on two national times by the narrowest of margins – 0.01 seconds. In the 100m free she was aiming for a NQT of 1.03.59 and, giving her all, finished third in 1.03.60 – less than the blink of an eye outside the target time. In the 200m back she came agonisingly close again. Swimming alone out in front in her heat, she looked well set entering the final 10m and could not believe her eyes when she saw her time of 2.34.54, just outside the 2.34.53 NQT. Britton picked up bronze medals in the 100m free and 200m back and finished a very creditable seventh in the overall points for her age group. Ella Windle, 12, picked up two good PBs and finished eighth in her

The Hornets’ Pony Road team led the way by beating Herts All-Stars 23-2 and 20-4, despite being without five of their regular line-up. Sean Gulliver, Anthony Puttock and Adam Todd made their Pony League debuts. Horsham Red Sox All-Stars won 24-4 and 23-8, with Will Anderson and Jared Cox as MVP in each match and Daniel Edgoose as MVP overall for his nine RBIs and six runs. Horsham Athletics All-Stars completed a clean sweep by winning 10-0 and 13-5.

age group. Aimee Davies, 11, continued to show great progress, with a top-10 finish in her age group. Jess Matlock, Jade Stocker, Tegan Jenkins, Eleanor Morris and Leah Clarke completed the line-up for Atlantis’ strongest representation at the regionals. Head coach Bill Penny said: “This

was a great weekend for Atlantis. Kate will rightly steal the headlines for a great achievement – the first Atlantis swimmer to win a regional age group. “Beth should also be proud of her performances. Both girls are in the early stages of their swimming careers and can look forward to bright futures if they continue to work hard.”

Kate Windle drives for the finish in her 200m breast national swim

Nathan Miller has left his job as manager of the ladies section at Cottesmore Golf Club. He said: “I am leaving with mixed feelings. My time at Cottesmore has been a big learning curve and I shall miss the help and advice of what seems to me 70 surrogate mothers in the ladies section! “I am looking forward to my new job which is, for me, promotion. Many of the management skills learnt here will stand me in good stead. “I am delighted that Max Hazelden, who as a young junior won the Fathers and Sons competition in 1980, will be taking over my role.” Ladies captain Mary Grange said: “We are sad to see him go as he has been so supportive of our section.”

Cricket Rohit Jagota scored 86 and Tom Crump 53 not out as Pulborough (232-4) drew with Chichester (1306) with a much-improved performance. Most of the match was played in the rain, sometimes quite heavy, as Horsham Trinity (190-9) beat Nuthurst by 28 runs despite Graham Prior’s 5-37. In the Gullick Cup, defending champions Kings Arms Billingshurst (136) lost to West Sussex Antique Timber of Wisborough Green (139-6) off the final possible ball. Heath Lambert beat Crabtree Cavaliers (116-8) by six wickets and Novartis beat West Sussex Antique Timber (135-9) by seven wickets.
