If you’re running a restaurant in Horsham, more than ever before you’ll need to be bringing something different to the table. There is now more competition than ever before, and it’s only going to get tougher. Today sees the opening of Wabi, a Japanese restaurant in East Street, which in many ways raises the bar in terms of cuisine in Horsham. The owners have also revealed details of a sister project, Just My Sushi, opening up within a matter of weeks in Swan Walk. Carmela, a Southern Italian, is due to open later in the summer at the top of Denne Road, while it is likely that Ask and one other, as yet unknown, restaurant could fill another unit at the former Kings Head Hotel site. The Olive Branch (formerly the Green Dragon) has very much switched focus to food, and there are rumours of other restaurants interested in coming to Horsham.

Perhaps it’s not a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth (there are, we’re sure, many town’s who would love to fill its vacant units with smart new eateries) but you can’t help but feel that something has to give. It’s not like there was even a shortage in the first place! But Horsham District Council’s Town Centre Manager, Garry Mortimer-Cook, said it was a great opportunity for businesses. He said: “The (suggestion of too many restaurants) has been levelled at the council before, particularly during the Town Hall plans. “But rather than talking it down and discussing the weaknesses, we need to be looking at how we can all take advantage of this. “It’s a huge asset and we need to communicate with residents and businesses, and gather ideas as these quality additions are going to make Horsham the place to be for eating out.”

Civic service

The annual Horsham District Council Civic Service will be held at Horsham Parish Church in the Causeway on Sunday (20th June) at 6.30pm. The Chairman of Horsham District Council, Cllr Brian Donnelly, would be delighted to see as many people as possible join him for this special service at St Mary’s Church, which marks the start of the new Council year and joins the Flower Festival's closing celebration service in Choral Evensong. Everyone is welcome and afterwards, refreshments will be served in the Causeway Barn.

Adult learning Pupils at QE II School in Horsham, in front of the nearly completed performing arts facilities.

You can find out more about adult learning at a fun event in Horsham next month, with demonstrations and displays. The ‘celebration of learning’ event takes place on Saturday, 10th July, between the bandstand and the war memorial in the town centre, from 10am to 2pm. It’s a chance to find out more about the West Sussex Adult and Community Learning Service and courses on offer from September.

A creative education After three years of relentless fundraising, Queen Elizabeth II School has achieved its astounding £500,000 target – but has no plans to stop there. The money raised has gone towards a major reinvention of its studio and performing arts facilities, a spectacular new building due to be revealed on 21st July. Currently housing 61 pupils with severe learning difficulties and complex conditions such as autism and epilepsy, the school is now hoping to secure a further £45,000 to furnish the studio with a retractable raised seating area. Once completed, the school can develop its creative arts services by doubling the size of the current studio, allowing for separate drama and indoor PE facilities. Lesley Dyer, Head Teacher at QE II since 1993, said: “Our philosophy of using performing arts has proved really successful, but our old studio was totally inadequate - we had to

cram our audiences into every available space and our growing number of pupils made it difficult for whole school productions. “Our pupils will soon be able to rehearse and perform in an appropriate setting and enjoy indoor sports including trampolining and music, and a purpose built art studio.” QE II is also keen to share the benefits of its new studio with the wider community. Lesley continued: “We look forward to sharing our fabulous resource with the local community and schools. We are also seeking specialist status in performing arts, which will enable us to develop even more opportunities for our pupils and support our partner schools and community partnerships.” Sue Jay, Creative Arts teacher, said: “The old studio was a shed without toilets and shelter from the rain. We used to have to wait under gazebos before going on stage! “This building is so important to the students. We are

nearly there, with just a few weeks before the official studio opening.” Three years ago, Julie Bateman, a mother of one of the pupils, attended a school production. Inspired by the children’s enthusiasm and talent, she spearheaded the fundraising campaign, organising events including parties, golf and polo days, children's fun days, and concerts and balls. Julie said: “My quest to raise money to build a new theatre and art centre for the children has been the most rewarding and wonderful experience. “The school is so special. All the children love QE II and gain so much confidence and happiness from their experiences of art and drama; the new facility will enable them to achieve so much more.” Lesley added: “I cannot thank Julie and our sponsors enough for enabling our small school to have such an amazing facility, and Forest School who lent us a venue for continuing our performing arts work during our building project.” Thanks to them the pupils at QE II have been able to rehearse their performance of Twelfth Night (see picture, left), which they are taking to the West End in July as part of the Shakespeare for Schools Project. QEII has just been recognised by Ofsted for its excellence in performing arts. To make a contribution call 01403 266215.

New to (Far) East St. Inside

If you’re bored of us banging on about the new pubs and restaurants in Horsham, there is plenty more for you to get your teeth in to in today’s edition of The Resident

Horsham Open Studios

A number of Horsham’s artists will be opening up their studios this weekend and next (19/20th & 26/27th). We’ve featured the likes of Alison Ingram and Angela Brittain in recent weeks, but many more are worthy of a mention. We couldn’t do them all justice but you’ll find the odd snippet in this week’s paper on several artists. For all the details you’ll need go to www.horshampenstudios.co.uk

Glynde Place Glynde Place Dance Studios has celebrated 25 years with a dazzling stage show at the Hawth Theatre, featuring more than 300 girls. We have exclusive pictures on Pages 6&7, and as always they are free as Jpegs to those pictured - and mums and dads!

School kids get Miserable

The Capitol Theatre in Horsham is gearing up for two big shows - one being stages by Forest and Millais Schools, the other by Tanbridge. The Resident joined the youngsters of Tanbridge during dress rehearsals on Saturday and found they’re taking Les Miserables very seriously. Page 12

The much anticipated Wabi restaurant opens to the public today at the former Horse and Groom pub site So Wabi has finally opened... Indeed it has. It is open to the public for the first night tonight (Friday) having staged a few taster nights and a launch party on Wednesday.

There’s quite a buzz about this one... There has to be, as it’s something very different for Horsham. The Japanese restaurant will be hoping to break the European dominance along East Street, where established restaurants such as Tristan’s, Strada, Tortellini and Pizza Express have made the area an unofficial ‘dining out’ hub. And of course we have Cote to? Yes, the French restaurant opened up at the end of last year and has been a

great success. The Quarter Restaurant, in Park Place, is also building up a reputation for hearty grub. But Wabi has something they don’t...

Jellyfish? Well yes, it does have a spectacular jellyfish tank, as part of its dramatic layout. The owners wouldn’t reveal how much it costs, but you would be forgiven for assuming it’s upwards of the £900,000 spent at Cote. The days of the Horse and Groom suddenly seems a long time ago.

So what should we expect? Great food and great service. Owner Don Burstow told The Resident: “The observations a the taster sessions was that the food was too good. You are obviously seeking a certain

After a period of relentless fundraising, there will soon be good reason for celebration at QE II School in Horsham. The 61 pupils will soon witness the finishing touches to a new studio and performing arts centre. An official opening is set for 21st July. Page 3

I hear it is expensive? Well Don said that he “hoped that there would be something that most people could afford” whether that is a full sit down meal or a drink and some sushi. But yes, it is expensive, and for most of us will be considered really only for special occasions. There was even talk of Michelin star potential on Wednesday night (though not by any of the Wabi team we might add, who wouldn’t be so presumptuous) and that kind of quality comes at a price.

I hear talk of another Japanese restaurant? Like London buses, aren’t they? Yes, a Just My Sushi will be opening within a month in Swan Walk. It is the same team behind Wabi, with the second outlet being a kind of little sister to Wabi, serving juices, Bentoboxes and sushi.

Bento-box? Like school dinners. It’s a small box with separate areas for food and sauces. They do a lovely lunch time Bento Box at Sanmae at the other end of town (in Springfield Road) which should not be forgotten when considering eating out.

amount of feedback and criticism (and ways to improve) although I suppose to not get it is a good thing in many ways.”

Cote has enjoyed a successful opening period in East Street

Absolutely - we have loads of fine restaurants about, don’t we? We do. As well as those already mentioned, we have the likes of the delightful River Kwai in Market Square,

Mr Li’s, Darchini, New Curry Centre, Piccolo’s, El Bodegon, Filippo’s, not to mention all of the great pubs we have locally.

Talking of which, what’s happened at The Green Dragon? All change there. It’s now The Olive Branch. The brewery company - Hall & Woodhouse - have spend a fortune, roughly £600,000, in jazzing the place up, and it looks fantastic, with a great new garden too.

Might pop along for the World Cup! Not that sort of place no more - think of the Black Jug. Manager Ben Dalton said: “People can come here and have a quiet drink or a meal or for a coffee and croissant without the TV being on. There’s a huge demand for it at this end of town.”

Coffee and croissant? Yes, The Olive Branch is open from 9am each day, serving breakfast. At the moment it’s geared to a Continental style, but the Full English will follow.

So typical pub grub then? Not at all. They have angled towards quality, with the mains on the menu including many English dishes such as Pressed Pork Belly and Lamb Shank Shepherd’s Pie. Ben said: “Even the ketchup is made here. People are tired of ping and ding food. They don;t want food they know has just come out of the microwave.”

the resident | Friday 18 June 2010

Continued from Page 4... Focusing on British food - a novel idea for Horsham! Well, there are others who have expressed a love of English food - Tristan’s in East Street being one, while Matt Gillan, head chef at The Pass, South Lodge Hotel, last year told The Resident that English food has surpassed French! Ben said: “There are some wonderful British meals and we embrace that here.”

But what’s The Olive Branch about? Yes, a bit of a strange choice of name perhaps, but Ben said it’s an offering a peace after all that has gone before. Not that the Green Dragon was ever that bad. Ben has maintained old pictures of the pub as it was as wall decorations, and is quick to remind us that it is “still a pub at heart.”

So now we just need the Kings Head site to open as something...

5

news

Well, we’re told that things are now in progress. The agent involved, Charles Palmer, won’t reveal any of the parties involved, but said that there is now an agreement on the front half of the former hotel and things are moving forward at the other units too. Charles said: “It’s something that is quite exciting and will add a new dimension to Horsham.”

How’s it going then? There’s a lot of work to be done and they don’t have the colossal budget that some others have enjoyed. This is a family affair - the restaurant takes the name of Francesco’s mother and relatives are among the staff - and they’re all in it together, so we expect them to only open when they’re good and ready.

Are there any others in the pipeline? We have reported already that Carmela, which will serve Southern Italian and Sicilian food, is hoping to open later in the summer. It’s at the old Pizza Piazza site at the top on Denne Road, opposite Wabi, and the man behind it is Francesco Raciti, the popular former manager of Strada.

So plenty of choice then? Absolutely, but don’t forget that newer doesn’t mean better. They’ll have to be really good for the lads’ end of season football meal to not be at the New Curry Centre, or for me not to take the wife to River Kwai on our next wedding anniversary. But great choice for us residents.

It’s Ask at the front, isn’t it? Still no confirmation, but it’s become one of those well known ‘secrets’. If it’s anything other than an Ask we’ll be amazed.

Any opening date yet? No, nothing as yet, but watch this space. Francesco was hoping for a July opening but there’s inevitably hold-ups, so perhaps August is more realistic.

Wardens brighten up

Ashington’s Junior Wardens now have new polo shirts as part of a new uniform sponsored by Horsham District Council and the local branch of Cubitt and West estate agents in the village. Adrian Passingham, Branch Manager of Cubitt and West, said: “I think the new kit looks

fantastic. They also have winter fleeces and caps. “Cubitt and West is delighted to support the scheme in the village and also gets involved with other community projects. “Ashington is a really great place to live with a strong and vibrant community spirit. The

Wardens do a fantastic job and work closely with the Police Neighbourhood team to help ensure that it’s also a safe place to live.” Junior Wardens attend regular organised events and get involved with community projects throughout the year. www.horshamcsp.org

Cup of Kingdom coffee?

Kingdom Faith’s free fun day on Saturday was attended by over 3,000 people. It didn’t clash with the footy...

You probably know something about the Kingdom Faith Church already. You may have attended one of the huge fun days held on the Old Crawley Road. An estimated 3,000 were at the impressive free event on Saturday, featuring more rides and entertainment than you could fit in within a day. You may have seen swarms of cars parked down Foundry Lane on Sunday mornings and wondered what on Earth was going on, and heard it was some sort of modern church. Or perhaps you are one of the thousands who attend the sermons and events held at the church each week. Either way, the influence of the Kingdom Faith Chuch is growing in Horsham - and beyond - and they are now putting the finishing touches to a dramatic refurbishment of ‘The Hub’. The Church promotes itself as a ‘Church with a Smile’ and to prove it and to help meet the demands of an ever increasing number of families using its facilities, a quite stunning new cafe area has been created. Called The Hub, it incorporates what was three separate rooms at the church’s Foundry Lane

headquarters. As well as an attractive bar area, there are new flat screen TVs installed on the wall, a small bookstore (of a certain theme - you won’t find a Grisham thriller...) and there’s been no expense spared with the seating. It’s very impressive - right down to the ‘Kingdom Coffee’ cups! A large new play area will be installed soon - which demonstrates the church’s focus on young people. Already there is a successful Sunday Night Live scheme for teens, a Friday Nite Club for children aged 5-11 and a Little Builders Club offering arts and crafts for children up to five. You may wonder then, where the God part comes in! The Kingdom Faith Chuch says that ‘One of the ways in which Jesus demonstrated the Father’s love was be relating to others and getting involved in the lives of the people around Him. ‘We want to follow this example and live a lifestyle of investment in our local community.’ Jonathon Dyke, Missions Pastor at Kingdom Faith, laughed at The Resident’s assumption that the church was a British version of the preaching and gospel music-inspired American

Clive Urquhart, senior pastor, opens The Hub churches we’ve all seen on TV. Instead, he described it as a community based church, with a more modern approach to the word of Jesus. Messages are relayed through large screens behind a stage, Christian rock bands, and through sermons and guest speakers which give a contemporary take on religion. Jonathon said “We are here as we are part of the community, we love Horsham, but we feel we have to do something about that. “That’s why we try to give back. The fun day we’ve been staging

for a few years now and it’s grown to the stage where 4,000 people come, of all ages, and now we have this new facility. It’s safe, professional, and offers quality to the families who use the centre. “It helps us to celebrate being a church and to show that we having a great time. “Everyone is a member of my church here in Horsham - they just don’t all come here!” If you would like to find out more about the Church and its services visit www.kingdomfaith.com or The kingdom Faith Church’s Facebook page.

It’s double SOUTHERN standards COUNTIES

This traffic warden clearly forgot his own rules when he left his official parking services car - on double yellow lines. The car - which has the words 'Parking Services' emblazoned across the bonnet was left just a few feet away from a legal parking space. The traffic warden left his silver Astra on double yellows for 35 minutes as he slapped drivers with parking tickets.

Eagle-eyed resident Seth Calvert, 39, an architect, snapped the car parked on Kempshott Road, in Horsham, on Saturday morning. He said: ''I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the warden's car parked slap bang in the middle of double yellow lines. “There were lots of legal parking spaces but the warden chose to park illegally. “I walked past the warden and saw him putting a ticket on someone's car because it was a couple of inches over the double

yellow line. “It's the worst kind of double standards - if you're going to enforce the rules at least abide by them yourself.” Horsham District Council yesterday launched an investigation into the incident. A spokesman said: ''Our parking attendants are not allowed to park on double yellow lines. We are investigating this as a matter of urgency.”

Feedback for festival Kidz Stuff is over, although the memories will live on thanks to videos of the record breaking gunge, bun and wet sponge fights on YouTube. The huge event, held at Horsham Park on 4th-6th June, featured a number of record breaking attempts as well as a talent show and various arena attractions. There was plenty to do but attendances were lower than what organisers had hoped for. Now those behind the Kidz Stuff event are asking for your feedback. Whatever your thoughts, do make your views heard, as it’ll all go towards to making next year’s event even better. Plus, there’s the chance for you to win £50 - three people who fill out the questionnaire available at www.kidzstuff.org.uk - will scoop a cash prize. John Le Rossignol of organisers Horsham Rotary Club said: “We are interested in gathering views regarding this year's Kidz Stuff Festival to help with the planning and marketing of next year's Festival. “We would like people who attended the Festival ...and

Miserable but not any Les fun They like the grim stuff at Tanbridge House School, don’t they? Last year, the pupils staged a successful adaptation of Sweeney Todd, the story of a demon barber who didn’t always do what he was supposed to with his cut throat razor. And this year the school is tackling Les Miserables, hardly a barrel of laughs itself! But the pupils involved are having a ball, with Luke Polie, who plays Marius, describing it as “the best experience of my life.” Well, he is one of the few characters who doesn’t die in the book... The students’ adaptation of the all time classic novel by French author Victor Hugo is at the Capitol theatre in Horsham on 22nd-24th June. It’s almost a complete sell out - in fact it probably will be by the time you read this - so there’s sure to be a great atmosphere for the young performers next week. And hot on the heels of this show is another schools production. Forest School and Millais School are combining for an adaptation of the smash hit musical Billy Elliott. Youngsters have been rehearsing for some time and the show is on 30th June - 1st July. Again it’s at the Capitol and tickets have been snapped up. But back to Les Miserables, where the young cast spoke to The Resident about the experience during weekend

The cast of Les Miserables, with Ross Williamson (middle row, second left) as Jean Valjean rehearsals. Ross Williamson, who has been handed the lead role as Jean Valjean, said promised that this was the school’s best show yet, adding that it

had “been amazing to be involved in a great performance with a bunch of amazing people.” As police inspector Javert, Reiss Blackwood-Bryce has to tackle a series of confused emotions throughout the play, but is in no doubt as to the quality of the show. He said: “This has been a great experience as I’m going to be doing GCSE drama. “I was in the show last year and

this time it has been even more fun.” Kari Harding, who plays tragic Fantine, said she had made lots of new friends, while Ella Brunt said: “I’ve met so many amazing people and it’s a great opportunity for everyone.” Check for any remaining tickets at the Capitol Box Office on 01403 750220.

Take the first step to your Salsa Evolution Have you seen the adverts? Received a flyer through your door? Or maybe you went to the free launch night? As Salsa Evolution nears the end of its third month in business in Horsham, the results are clear - dancing success! “I can’t believe how much fun we’re having!” said one student. “I was hooked from the launch night and am now about to start my third course.” Indeed, Elaine describes the lessons as, “a great social evening to meet new friends and learn a new dance skill.” Welcome to the Salsa Evolution wall of fame. Just in case you were thinking that Salsa dancing isn’t for you, please read on. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll be convinced otherwise, and join the ever-growing group of happy students. “It’s just good fun for all ages,” said Jane who has reached improver level.

“What I like is the flexibility,” explained another student. “Although it’s a 5 week course, if you do miss a week you don’t feel left behind, as Claire re-caps everything and gives you individual attention.” “Yes, fantastic approachable, friendly teaching,” echoed Mark. Salsa really is for everyone. Male, female, older, younger. You don’t need to be of a certain age or appearance. You don’t even have to have any rhythm, they’ll teach you all that in class. Honestly, they specialize in 2 left feet! It’s a great way to get fit, is loads of fun, you meet new likeminded friends, and it boosts your confidence. A Horsham couple who are taking private lessons just wanted to change the ’awk-

ward swaying’ default their dancing was set to when on the dancefloor. After their first lesson they commented, “we totally surprised ourselves!” Cross body/L.A. style Salsa is very logical to learn, and the courses enable you to progress though the levels at your own pace. The dance is led by the man, so, basically he’s in charge of deciding which moves to dance. “I’m

loving the challenge of trying to remember the moves and dancing them in different orders with my partner. The ladies are super patient and we all just end up laughing if it goes wrong. Which inevitably it often does at this stage,” commented a male student. If you think Salsa dancing is a “girl’s thing” trust me you’re mistaken. How many girly latin men do you know? Yet they’re amazing dancers.

One example of a man stepping forward to dance is Dan, who told us. “I turned up for a one-off taster, not knowing what to expect. “Two weeks later I was hooked! I love it and am now starting my third course. I would recommend any guy to at least try it. “I reckon you’d be surprised by how much you enjoy it and, well, that you can even do it!” Another student taking private lessons, Steven, described: It’s a great feeling knowing that you can put some Salsa music on, find the beat, and just start dancing with a lady. “I would never have the guts to ask a lady to dance othe r -

wise. I just wouldn’t know what steps to do!” Salsa Evolution are running a brand new Absolute Beginners 5 week course, which starts on Tuesday 29th June at 7.30pm at the Brighton Road Baptist Church. Try before you buy! You can come to the first week of the course for FREE and decide at the end if it’s for you. No obligation, just a brilliant way to trial, and you’re guaranteed a great night. It’s £30 for the full 5 weeks if you sign up after the class. Why not come along and find your dancing success too! Full info at www.salsaevolution.co.uk

Something to cheer There’s not been a great deal for Horsham’s young music fans to cheer about in the last year. But some consolation after the sad closure of the Black Cat Club, and the end of the Town Hall as a music venue, is the continued growth of rock nights staged by Highgain Promotions. And Highgain took advantage of a great set, erected in Horsham Park for Kidz Stuff, to stage a great gig for 300 people on June 4th.

Amy Can Flyy, an up and coming pop act from Bournemouth, headlined, supported by Mimi Soya, with local acts Raising Maisie, Leaving Casanova and Battle of the Bands champions Last Letter Read completing the bill. Rock HYC nights return to horsham Youth Club in Hurst Road on Friday, 2nd July, although acts performing have yet to be confirmed. For tickets and the latest info visit www.horshamyouth.co.uk

If you had seen our summer preview edition at the start of May, you’ll have been a little saddened at the loss of some enjoyable fixtures across the district. This year, for example, there will be no Handcross Soapbox Derby, no NSPCC Big Bike Ride and no Barns Green Music Festival. But there was a surprise in there - the Dragon Boat races are coming to Knepp Castle. The popular fundraising festival held in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice will take place at the estate in West Chiltington while work is carried out on the Tilgate Park Lake in Crawley. So this year, it won’t just be crowds of people cheering the colourful Hong Kong style boats on. Proud sponsors Thomas Eggar LLP, Meteor Meet and Greet, Edwards Vacuum and Barclays will be joined lakeside by a number of curious Tamworth pigs, Longhorn cattle, Exmoor Ponies and fallow deer! It’s all thanks to the Burrell family who have offered the historic Lake at their Knepp Castle Estate, West Grinstead for the hospice to host its eighth annual Dragon Boat Festival, on Sunday 5th September. But here at The Resident we have

a sniff of a suspicion that - if we grab the opportunity - we could effectively take this event from Tilgate! The Resident has taken part before (while working in Crawley) and it’s a great day out - especially as a team building exercise. So do get involved if you’re a local firm - it’s lovely at Knepp, you can boost morale for your firm and as The Resident will be there you could get some good publicity too - all while raising funds for a great cause. Michael Beasley, organiser from St Catherine’s Hospice, says: “We’re challenging all local businesses to put down their pens, pick up the paddles and be part of it. Getting a team together is great fun, so make it the year of the dragon for you and your colleagues, while raising much needed funds for your local hospice.” Sir Charles Burrell says, “my Aunt Rona Smith was a great supporter of the hospice and would have been delighted to see this major fundraising event take place in the park for the first time. “The Knepp Estate is putting forward our own team which we believe will be unbeatable on home water, so why not see if you can do better.”

Chloe is Carnival Princess

Ashington village really goes to town on its annual carnival. We’re still more than two months away from the big day, but the Ashington Carnival Princess has already been chosen at a childrens party held in Ashington Community Centre. The Ashington Carnival Princess 2010 is Chloe Bull, 11, and her two Attendants are Amy Burroughs (10) and India Manville (9). The two Pageboys are Cavan Sopp, 7 and James Newland, 5. All of them attend Ashington CofE Junior School or Rydon Community College. Fowlers Estate Agents is one of the major sponsors of Ashington Festival this year, and two of their

staff judged the Carnival Princess contest. Ashington Festival 2010 is being held on the 21st of August, with the Carnival Procession starting at 1.30pm. The day includes arena acts, car boot sale, car show, flower show, fun dog show, funfair, animals and lots of stalls and sideshows. The fun continues right through the evening, with a live band playing outside and a fantastic firework display. Scam is scuppered We are - as a nation - a sceptical bunch. We tend to be rather distrustful of most things that sound too good to be true. Take, for instance, Strada giving away free food at Piazza Italia. They asked for nothing in return, but many people were strolling by two or three times before plucking up the courage to ask for some free risotto! We see it outside our offices with the paper stand. People have a look at the paper - yes, it says free - but will they follow me home and pester me for advertising? And to beat this scepticism, con men have to find elaborate ways to con us out of our money. Therefore, some of the schemes are very convincing, and sadly there are many who have lost vast sums of money - their entire savings in some case - to scams. Here’s a bit of good news though there’s one less to worry about. Nationwide letter scams from several Spanish businesses pretending to be based in West Sussex have been closed down by county trading standards officers. In a joint operation with Surrey and Sussex police, the scam letter

Strada proved there is such a thing as a free lunch at Piazza Italia, but most ‘too good to be true’ deals are just that businesses were traced, and more than £150,000 of victims’ money saved. The main scam involved timeshare owners across the country receiving a phone call or letter from a business which appeared to be in West Sussex, convincing them it had buyers for their timeshare in return for an immediate fee

But once the fee was paid, the buyer never materialised. Victims who tried to contact the business had little or no response, and found the West Sussex address was just a PO Box. Victims had in some cases lost up to £1500. This type of scam is known as an ‘advance fee fraud’. West Sussex Trading Standards

received reports from victims across the country about this scam and other advance fee scams offering other services and using the same PO Box address. This intelligence triggered trading standards into action and investigators traced the route between Spain and the UK used by the scammers, and closed it down. “Scammers all over the world are becoming more sophisticated and creating new con tricks all the time,” said Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection. “Remember that any offer which seems too good to be true is probably just that. It’s all to easy to let down your guard, then you too could become a victim.” At the same time though, remember some people are just offering a good deal. As a a general rule, steer clear of foreign Lotto claims and anyone pretending to be a financially naive African with huge sums of cash. If you suspect a scam, or have been a victim, call Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 or go to www.consumerdirect.gov.uk for clear, practical consumer advice.

Following the huge success of the screening of NT: Live The Habit of Art, The Capitol are pleased to announce the next screening. London Assurance, the smash hit production, will be screened live from the National Theatre in Screen 1 is at The Capitol on Monday 28th June at 7pm. Sir Harcourt Courtly is lured away from the epicentre of fashionable London by the promise of a rich and beautiful bride, Grace, several decades his junior. Arriving at Oak Hall, Gloucestershire, he marvels at this rural Venus until her charms are eclipsed by her hearty cousin, the foxhunting Lady Gay Spanker. Meanwhile his disguised son turns up in flight from his creditors and falls head over heels for Grace. When Lady Spanker discovers the young couple, she needs little prompting from the visiting chancer Dazzle to lead Sir Harcourt astray.

Dion Boucicault, the Irish genius of London theatre in the age of Dickens, wrote the brilliantly funny 'London Assurance' in 1841 and thereby created – in Sir Harcourt and Lady Spanker – two of the great comic roles of the English stage, played at the National Theatre by Simon Russell Beale and Fiona Shaw. Weird news from Planet Earth

Record is real thing Students in China have set a new world record for the number of fountains created by dropping mint sweets inside bottles of Coca Cola. A total of 2,175 students at Changchun University, in northeast China's Jilin province, simultaneously created geysers, reports New Culture Daily. They wore plastic coats to stay dry during the spectacular

stunt, which was recognised by Guinness, on the university's basketball court. The previous record was 1,911 simultaneous fountains

One of Africa's largest birds of prey is being threatened by gamblers who believe smoking its brains gives them powers to predict World Cup results. Mark Anderson, of BirdLife South Africa, said he feared that belief in 'muti' magic would accelerate the decline in rare Cape vultures, reports the Daily Telegraph

"The harvesting of the birds' heads by followers of muti magic is a threat these birds can't endure."

A US mother of two is waging a campaign to become the world's heaviest living woman. Donna Simpson, 42, from New Jersey, weighs more than 42 stone and aims to reach 71 stone - or 1,000lbs, reports the Daily Telegraph. She has her own website which gives fans the chance to pay to watch her eat greasy food or walk to the car.

"The bigger your butt is, the bigger belly you have, the sexier you are," she said. Miss Simpson spends up to £516 a week on groceries

A naked photo shoot in China was disrupted when an outraged local villager began attacking photographers. The 20-year-old model and more than 10 photographers descended on the Shenxiandong Forestry Park in central China's Henan province to shoot a series of arty nude pictures.

They were accidentally discovered by a local villager who quickly informed other residents to come and look.

Boys report strange ‘sort of polar bear...’ Not all alleged encounters with monsters and the like turn out to be actual confrontation with an elusive and unknown monster. One of my favourite stories from Sussex is as follows, and comes from The Times of August 2nd 1955, under the heading ‘A Strange Encounter – Two Puzzled Bicyclists In Sussex’: ‘From a correspondent - It must have been something of a shock. One minute the two London cyclists had lain in their tent on the common convinced that their shining new machines were safely leaning against the tall Scots pines which an Earl of Sheffield had planted in the year of Waterloo. Next moment they heard movements behind the tangled mass of brambles and bracken which obscured their view of the cycles. Loud grunts sounded from the far side of an oak tree. They soon realized why. The desire to be away early to the coast prompted one of the travellers to wade through the dew on the grass and check the condition of his tyres. He was quickly back in the tent and shaking his companion out of sleep. Half clothed, the pair hastily crept between the avenues of gorse

and crouched behind the birches. Their cycles, fortunately, were just as they had left them, but sniffing at the tyres were two strange animals. Heads bent low, the two creatures peered closely at the network of spokes in the wheels, gazed cautiously at the pedals and sniffed again at the tyres, Then, turning to face the wind, they clumsily galloped across the common and into a wood. The police informed The day was still young when the telephone bell rang beside our village constable's bed. “Neither the cyclists nor their machines”, explained a voice, “had sustained any damage.

But we thought it best to let you know in case the police are looking for the animals." “How would you describe the creatures?” inquired the constable. The Cockney voice was distressingly vague. Both animals were big “like some strange kind of polar bear." Their backs seemed grey and white streaks marked their l o n g faces.

They grunted. And they could run with surprising speed. The constable has lived in the country all his life. Perhaps that fact explains why, instead of putting through an emergency call to the county police headquarters, he slipped on to his bicycle and came round to see me. “As. you're a naturalist," he said, " I thought you'd like to hear about it." There the incident really ends. But there is a sad postscript. A motorist driving through the night not far from the site where the cyclists pitched their tent recently collided with a powerful animal. Before breakfast our rector discovered the corpse and it was dumped in my garage. Twenty-nine inches long and with a tail of eight inches, the grey bear-like creature smashed our scales at 251b. Two days passed before we buried the animal. Yet such is the interest or the people in this village in our wildlife that during that short period the corpse was inspected by the postman, the grocer, our newsagent, two musicians, a professor of medicine, the milkman, a nurse, and 25 schoolboys, not one of whom had ever seen a badger before...

The organisers of the council’s big summer event appear to be experimenting somewhat. Since the old town carnival sort of fizzled out, the showpiece event has struggled to carve a new identity. Last year’s Big Day Out has become Sparks in the Park, and the organisers are promising that Horsham Park is going to be the setting for “the most amazing carnival procession Horsham has ever seen”. Horsham District Council has teamed up with one of the leading carnival companies in England to organise and stage an energetic, colourful and flamboyant carnival procession with the emphasis on participation and fun.

25th July

The procession will see nearly 80 amazing wing and skirt costumes from the Kinetika Spectacle Collection parade through the Park on Sunday 25 July. Leading up to the 25th July there will be a number of ways to get involved and participate in the carnival, including carnival making workshops, and samba workshops which hope to create and form Horsham’s very own samba band. Sounds good, but we’ll see... For more information about how to get involved, especially to be in a samba band, please contact Nick Jenkins on 01403 215216 or email nick.jenkins@horsham.gov.uk

Are you going to sleep with the noise of the vuvuzelas buzzing in your head? To some, it sounds like a swarm of bees, although I personally think it’s more like a huge moped race taking place in the distance. Either way, it’s annoying, is making most people watch World Cup matches on mute, and you may need a sound more soothing, poetic, pure even, to shake it off. If so, visit the Capitol on Saturday night (19th June) where Horsham Symphony Orchestra present a summer evening of orchestral music from the eighteenth century to the present day. The orchestra performs under its principal conductor, Steve Dummer and leader Barry Sutton. The HSO prides itself on fostering links with local composers and to open this concert, the orchestra will be performing the world premiere of Symphony in E, by Julian Broughton. Julian currently convenes the music programme for the Centre for Community Engagement at the University of Sussex and began work on the Symphony in Autumn 2009. Whilst quite short in duration, the four movements contain a wealth of musical ideas, frequently marked by jazz-like

rhythms. The work was commissioned by the HSO with additional funds from the PRS for Music Foundation and the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust and promises to be an exciting start to the evening. Afterwards, the orchestra will accompany Sara Stagg in a performance of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 in D. Sara, a member of the HSO, was educated at Christ’s Hospital and graduated with Honours in Music from Manchester University. Sara has much experience of playing with chamber groups, both in and around Sussex and also at the Southbank in London. As well as performing, Sara teaches violin and piano both in schools and privately. After the interval, the orchestra will perform Brahms' 2nd Symphony. The Symphony is of the composer’s most best-loved and popular works and overflows with charming melodies and delicate orchestration. The concert will commence at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £12, £10 for concessions over 60 and £5 for under 18s. Tickets from The Capitol Box Office on 01403 750220 or www.thecapitolhorsham.com Tickets are also available from the HSO on 01403 891356.

No lack of talent

Folk duo gig

Nancy Kerr and James Fagan - a wellloved duo with an international following - are at Horsham Folk Club on Sunday, 20th June. Nancy’s earthy and exquisite fiddle and viola playing combined with the striking rhythmic texture of James’s flatbacked bouzouki produces a sound of rare fullness, whilst their rich, harmonic singing brings to life the stories of the songs they choose and write. Horsham Folk Club, Normandy Centre, Denne Road, Horsham, RH12 1JP. Tickets: £7 (Members £5), under 18s and students free; on the door from 7.45pm. Information: 01403 276273

The line-up for the Steyning Festival was akin to what you might expect at a full season at a town’s arts centre. Well known writers such as RJ Ellory, Peter James and Julia Donaldson, alongside critically acclaimed theatre performances, artists, and a huge Bjorn Again concert. So it goes without saying that it’s been another hugely successful Steyning Festival . The festival aims to bring together the huge diversity of local talent alongside a programme of visiting artists from all genres. This year has been no exception and has provided a vast programme of events that includes music, visual arts, theatre, literature and local walks, to suit all ages and interests. Highlights ranged from Anita Parry starring in ‘What Would Helen Mirren Do?’, Peter James and Sophie Hannah and RJ Ellory

signing their books after the ‘Crime Writers Evening – A Twist in the Tale’, and a member of the Jumping Bean Theatre Company performing ‘Mabel Mackintosh and Her Enormous Pants’. Against all the odds, Steyning’s Got Talent managed to get a sell out audience on the same evening as the Britain’s Got Talent TV finale. There was a real buzz, according to Artistic Director, Jacque Gilbrook, who said: “Our theme of Uniting Generations was celebrated in style as the community got behind Steyning's Got Talent for a fabulous evening's entertainment.” Tom Pargeter, who is 20 years old and writes his own songs, won the competition. In addition, throughout the Festival there have been open houses celebrating the work of local and professional artists, young and old. Jacque Gilbrook, Artistic

Director, summed up by saying: “The box office attendances have more than doubled, with sell-out music, literature and theatre events thrilling their audiences. “We knew from the buzz at the Arts Trail Launch at Chatfields that we had everyone behind us and as I sat having my breakfast on the rifle range with thirty other walkers at 9am on 1st June on the ‘Song of the Dawn Walk’, I thought this is what this Festival is all about!” The whole Steyning Festival Committee and Friends would like to thank all the businesses and shops for displaying posters and hosting as supporting events, as well as St Andrews CofE Primary School, Steyning Grammar, Steyning Library and Steyning Centre for hosting events. Well Argentina and Uruguay have just got the second round of group games off to a flying start, so let’s hope it gets better for England too... The town pubs were heaving on Saturday night as England played their first game of the World Cup in South Africa. There were of course great cheers when Steven Gerrard tucked away the opening goal. Unfortunately, many people missed the goal as they were watching in HD. Not at B52s in Piries Place though, which has become an unofficial centre for matches in Horsham due to its outside seating area and television screens. Great for sneaking out

of work for the afternoon games! There was some colourful language filling the air when Robert Green decided to throw the ball into his own goal. There’s still plenty of football action to come. Shelley Arms in Broadbridge Heath has a bouncy castle and a VIP area while The Bear in Market Square is serving up free food during England matches. The Bedford in Station Road, where the pictures on this page were taken, are offering a waitress service as it prepares for a bumper World Cup, boosted by its seven screens. The Queens Head, under new management who have

installed new screens, are also getting into the mix with a range of promotions. The Cock Inn in Southwater is hosting match day barbecues (Page 30) while the Kings Arms in the Bishopric is showing big screen action in both of the bars and in the newly refurbished back garden which has just opened just opened. Another good spot to watch the games is The Holbrook Club. England play tomorrow night against Algeria (kick off 7.30pm) and their final group game is against Slovenia on Wednesday at 3pm. We won’t be so brave as to predict any more than. Yet.

Fears over housing Horsham District Council has written to the Government asking it to look urgently at concerns about future new housing development in the Horsham District. The Council is concerned that, thanks to current national policy, new housing will be introduced in an uncontrolled and ad hoc way in the Horsham District, where there is little tangible benefit to local communities. The Leader of Horsham District Council, Cllr Robert Nye, has sent a letter to the Rt. Hon. Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State, Department for Communities and Local Government, asking the Government to review its planning policy in this respect. I n the

letter, Cllr Nye (below) says: “Horsham District Council has, for many years, had a reputation for addressing the housing requirements in the District proactively and on the basis of a plan-led approach. “The Council was the third authority in the country and the first in the South East region to have a “sound” Local Development Framework Core Strategy, covering the period to 2018. “It has been working with the relevant local communities since then to implement the provisions of the Core Strategy, particularly so far as the major housing developments are concerned. “We now find ourselves in a very difficult position. Despite actively pursuing an approach to our Local Development Framework responsibilities which marry up well with the evolving “localism” agenda, we face the threat of having to accept new housing development on an “ad hoc” basis in locations where there is little tangible benefit to the local communities. “Two appeals have been allowed recently because we have been unable to maintain the five year land supply required by the Government’s Planning Policy Statement for housing (PPS3). “Our land supply is deficient because the South East Plan increased the housing numbers

and the basis for calculation and, in addition, the recession has meant that progress with major and smaller housing sites was severely curtailed. Neither factor was due to us and yet our communities are paying the price. “The proposed removal of the regionally imposed housing targets, in the South East Plan, will have some benefit in reducing the pressures at the upper limit for new housing development, but the current system will still require some form of “control” total for housing requirements and, with the continuation of five year housing supply requirements in their current form, there will not be either the scope or the opportunity to work with local communities in the short to medium term in the way intended. “There is, in fact, a significant prospect of misleading local communities on the benefits of the proposed introduction of localism into the planning system unless the issue of the current five year housing land supply requirements is addressed as a priority. “The Council believes that there should, alongside the proposed Decentralisation and Localism Bill, be a thorough review of the five year housing land supply requirements set out primarily in paragraphs 70 and 71 of PPS3, with a view to

Several sites in the district, including land at Southwater, are being considered for housing development

setting future such requirements within the context of the preparation of locally generated housing needs and the consensus approach as to how best to tackle these needs at the local level. “Your proposals to incentivise councils to deliver land for housing through the planning system, by matching council tax receipts, could form the basis of a tool to ensure delivery - using carrots not sticks. “Without such a shift in Government planning policy, there

will still be the potential for the imposition of development schemes on local communities, through planning by appeal, contrary to the basis of the proposed approach intended to give those communities a genuine say in how their communities develop in the future. “On behalf of my Council and the communities we represent, can I urge you to give this issue serious and urgent consideration.” Horsham District Council believes that if the Government

genuinely intends councils to plan to meet their locally generated needs, rather than imposed regional housing targets, that it is essential to change the system of requirements that are placed upon it. There will continue to be a need for new homes, but the current five year land supply requirement needs to be removed to allow the Council to plan proactively with its communities for the future of the area. Loaded? Go for Gunshot Peter Hughes - country property in Petworth is selling this delightful and charming Grade II listed house in a superb rural location about 2 miles north of the very popular village of Wisborough Green. Old Gunshot house, which is being offered at a guide price £1.25m, is believed to have origins dating from 17th Century, with

later additions. The very well presented accommodation includes a wealth of period features including exposed timbers and an inglenook fireplace and comprises: entrance hall, cloakroom, sitting room, drawing room, kitchen/dining, master bedroom with large dressing area, leading to an ensuite bathroom, 3 further bedrooms, bathroom and

Clive Hancocks from Mortgage Solutions Limited comments on the Bank of England’s decision to retain the Bank base rate at 0.5% for the 16th consecutive month With the new government only two weeks away from their emergency budget it comes as no surprise that once again interest rates stay at half of one percent for the 16th consecutive month. These low interest rates perhaps tells us something about just how fragile our economy is, as presumably the feeling is that if interest rates were to rise this would stop the slow economic recovery that is underway. However, here are some of the positive aspects of these low interest rates: • Many borrowers have enjoyed a period of exceptionally low mortgage interest repayments • Those who had the foresight to opt for a tracker rate have been able to really reduce what for most is their single biggest monthly outgoing • There are some very attractively priced products at the present time

• The pricing of fixed rate deals is also at an all time low level as evidenced by information published by Moneyfacts Although no-one knows when interest rates will rise and by how much, home buyers and existing borrowers looking to remortgage now have a good choice of products. With the number of mortgage products available at a 12 month high, prospective borrowers would be well advised to seek the advice of an independent mortgage broker to steer them through the thousands of deals that are available currently in the market before committing to a particular rate. For further information on how the latest base rate decision affects you, please call 01403 241414 or call in at Mortgage Solutions, 13 West Street, Horsham, RH12 1PB. www.mortgagesolutionsltd.co.uk

shower room. Outside, the property is approached over a private drive from Gunshot Common leading into a large gravel entrance drive leading to a good size double garage. The delightful gardens provide a lovely setting for the cottage, with large areas of lawn, a number of well stocked plant beds, an orchard being bordered by mature trees

and hedgerows. To one side is a studio/home office with power. Other features of the garden are an old well, a sun terrace and various wooden garden sheds. In all the grounds are about 0.65 acres. For further information contact Peter Hughes on 01798 344554 or www.peterhughes.co.uk

The amount of properties on the market has increased since the government scrapped home information packs (Hips), new figures show. Findings from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors UK Housing Market survey revealed 21 per cent of surveyors reported an increase in new instructions, compared to 11 per cent the previous month, with the scrapping of Hips being the main reason. Ian Perry, spokesman for the company, said: "Surveyors are generally confident that sales will continue to pick up over the summer months." He believes the optimism is a result of the increase in stock on the market seen over the last month. The report found house prices also went up in May, as 22 per cent more surveyors reported a rise rather than a fall, compared to 19 per cent in April. Nationwide recorded a 0.5 per cent increase in prices last month, but Halifax results indicated a drop of 0.4 per cent.

Team Mapp out a hat-trick

True to the current spirit of Football mania, Mapp & Company Independent Estate Agents are looking to score a hat-trick this summer by selling three flats in a row. The first sale was in Adversane Court, located conveniently at the start of North Heath Lane about half a mile from the town and station, opposite Novartis.

The company are now selling two more flats in the same development. Both are two bedroom, one ground floor in Shermanbury Court and a top floor in Woodmancote Court. Chris Skelton, Mapp & Company “Team Captain” says. "We love these flats because they are bigger than many houses with gas central heating, double glazing, loads of

storage space, big kitchen/diners and attractive views. At £169,950 each they score all the way on value for money! There is even a balcony to lean out and blow your vuvuzela nice and loud! It will be great to get all three away and score a hat-trick for our fans." For further details, interior photos and viewings contact Mapp & Company on 01403 271977.

Anyone who questioned whether Michael Schumacher still had that old magic can have no doubts after Sunday. At the Canadian Grand Prix, he did his best to ram as many people as he could on his way to 11th. Robert Kubica and Felipe Massa will both think twice before they next try a perfectly reasonable overtaking manoeuvre on the seven-time champ. It was just like watching the old Schuey who rammed Damon Hill -successfully - for his first title and Villeneuve - unsuccessfully - while bidding for a third.

motors French tease...

As a boy, I could never understand why the dazzling concept designs I used to see in car magazines were never made for the road. How could they design something so wonderful, yet only make boring stuff for us to drive? As a man, I still don’t understand. And here’s another teaser for us from Citroen... The French manufacturer has released details of its exciting line-up for the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed, which includes three UK premieres the hotly-anticipated 200hp DS3 Racing, the stunning Survolt all-electric supercar con-

cept and the ultra-chic Revolte concept. Making its first appearance in the UK, the eagerly awaited DS3 Racing will be a main attraction on Citroën’s show stand. Developed by Citroën Racing - the WRC team with five Manufacturer’s Championship titles - DS3 Racing is a limited edition model with a 100% sporting pedigree. Powered by a tuned and turbocharged 200hp 1.6-litre THP engine, DS3 Racing features integrated carbon-trimmed components and specialist motorsports equipment. To be launched in the UK before the

100 Club

end of this year, the exclusive DS3 Racing will be limited to just 1000 production units. Also making its UK debut is the highly-charged, all-electric Survolt supercar concept. A blend of high-fashion extrava-

AlfaSud - what a car! Anyway, more than a thousand images have already been uploaded to a unique online archive launched by Alfa Romeo to help celebrate its 100th anniversary. Photos submitted to www.alfacentenary.co.uk will be used to create a mosaic of the Italian sporting car manufacturer's latest Giulietta model later in the summer. Owners and fans - affectionately known as Alfisti - are being asked to upload unique and personal shots of their Alfa Romeo cars, both old and new, to tell the real story of one of the most iconic brands in motoring.

gance and motor racing dynamism, Survolt takes the essence of Citroën’s Revolte concept - performance, cutting-edge technology and luxury - and adds an assertive sporting dimension. Survolt

Swift flies in

presents a bold and radical vision for the future of ecologically sensitive, high-performance vehicles. On display at the Goodwood FoS-TECH pavilion - a showcase for bold and exciting new automotive technologies - is the sensational Revolte concept. Alongside Survolt, Revolte will highlight Citroën’s continuing commitment to environmentally conscious motoring - together with some signature design flair. Revolte will also be taking part in the special low-emissions hill climb adding some distinctive Citroën panache to the parade

These are the first - riveting - pictures of Suzuki’s third generation Swift which goes on sale as a 3 and 5 door model in the UK in the Autumn. Emissions are much lower with the new 1.2litre engine with manual transmission produces just 116g/km on the combined cycle. A 1.3-litre diesel engine will also become available and planned for UK introduction in early 2011.

of models from a number of other manufacturers. After its exceptionally popular UK debut at the show in 2009, the GTbyCITROËN concept will return to the Festival of Speed’s prestigious Supercar Paddock. Visitors will be amongst a few in the world to see the model in action as it roars into life up the famous Goodwood hill climb. The C4 WRC car will also be making a special appearance on Citroën's show stand. For more information visit www.goodwood.co.uk/festivalof-speed

MotoX thrills

Twelve-time World Trials Champion and Goodwood favourite Dougie Lampkin will be making a welcome return to Goodwood Festival of Speed on his 290cc Beta EVO T2 trials biker. Top Irish stunt rider and recent BMW Motorrad UK signing Mattie Griffin will be making his Goodwood debut performing jaw-dropping tricks on the hillclimb to delight Festival-goers.

Return to Power Here’s the new The Ford Mondeo, which has very cleverly driven itself to a scenic spot to watch a disappointing sunrise. There are other clever bits too -it boasts improved fuel economy, lower emissions and stronger performance thanks to high efficiency Ford EcoBoost petrol-injection turbo and upgraded Ford Duratorq TDCi diesel engines now on sale. New for Mondeo are the turbocharged 203PS 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine and significantly improved 2.0-litre TDCi diesels with 115, 140 and an impressive new 163PS version. Additionally Ford PowerShift, the smooth six-speed dual-clutch transmission system, comes to the Mondeo range. The enhancements are set to continue Ford Mondeo's leading position within its segment. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost has an advanced combustion system which brings new levels of performance and fuel efficiency to petrol units in this power range. The engine features lightweight all-aluminium construction, the latest-generation high-pressure direct-injection system, low-inertia turbocharging and twin-independent variable cam timing. With a maximum output of 203PS at 5,500rpm, combined with

maximum torque of 300 Nm delivered across a 1,750-4,500rpm range, the EcoBoost engine enables Mondeo to achieve 0-62mph acceleration in 7.9sec (8.2sec for the es-

tate) with a top speed of over 144mph for four and five-door versions (141mph for estates). Diesel Mondeo buyers have the choice of a significantly improved

Mini Millesim

Like the 207 and 308, Peugeot’s fun and economical 107 hatchback has also now received the Millesim treatment, as part of Peugeot’s 200 year celebrations. Powered by an economical three cylinder petrol engine, which emits just 106 g/km, the 107 Millesim also benefits from zero vehicle excise duty and a group three insurance rating. This means that it is the perfect car from the point of view of low running costs and with the comprehensive standard Millesim specification, the ideal car for customers looking for a small car but still requiring big car features, like airconditioning, alloy wheels etc… It is based on the current Urban Plus model but benefits from a range of extra standard equipment consisting of: 14” alloy wheels, airconditioning, rev counter, special code blue seat trim, blue air vent surrounds, blue instrument binnacle and unique Millesim 200 badging. The 107 Millesim range will be available this month priced from £9,545.00 on-the-road for the three door version. All models ordered in June also come with a free Nokia 5230 smartphone with inbuilt satellite navigation with free future updates and an in-car mounting kit.

2.0-litre Ford Duratorq TDCi engine family which complies with Stage V emission regulations and, for the first time, is available in three outputs – 115, 140 and 163PS.

Horsham lose out to Steyning

Horsham Bowls Club enjoyed two victories against Sussex Vice Presidents and Popes Mead, before suffering a heavy defeat to Steyning on Tuesday. The enjoyed another spirited win for Horsham against a strong Vice Presidents’ team last Friday, winning 123-115. The annual fixture is always entertaining and this year’s was no exception. Horsham were in the lead from the very first end and maintained their superiority throughout. The top rink of Robbie Calder, David Marden, Rod Taylor and skip Bill Monckton (+10) was well supported by Simon Felton (+8), Dennis Tribe (+6) and John Littleton (+5). On Saturday, Horsham narrowly came out on top against Popes Mead, winning 74-63. A much-depleted Horsham side travelled to Crawley and returned with a very pleasing win. Popes Mead generously lent Horsham three players to make up 4 rinks and the general atmosphere throughout the afternoon reflected the Crawley club’s friendliness and hospitality. Although trailing by 14 shots at the halfway stage, Horsham were revitalised after tea and won on 3 of the 4 rinks, thereby recording an 11 shot win. Top rink of David Gosling, David Marden, Robin Machell and skip Robbie Calder (+6) lead the team effort. Horsham came down to earth with a bump on Tuesday in its friendly against Steyning, losing by 35 shots. 48-83. However, the match was played in a good spirit, with much hilarity on the green. Losing on all four rinks, the best Horsham performance was by skip David Grogan’s team, which came within one shot of a draw.

More heartache for gutsy Yasmin Atlantis swimmers impress again

Atlantis swimmers again impressed at the South East Regional Championships held last weekend at K2 in Crawley. Izzy Harrod, 10, produced one of her best swims in the 400m Individual Medley. This is one of the toughest events on the swimming circuit comprising of 100m of each stroke and after starting strongly Izzy battled her way to a very rewarding silver medal. For many of Atlantis’ younger swimmers this was their first experience of swimming at a major championship and all of them gave a great accounts of themselves. For Yasmin Hooker, 11, her championships were rounded off on Sunday afternoon with her third near miss in her attempts to get her first National Qualifying time. In the 200m backstroke Yasmin missed out by only 0.9 of a second, another near miss but definitely a national swimmer in the making. Ella Windle, 11, started the final

day with a silver medal in the 1500m Freestyle and sealed her championships finishing 3rd in a very tough 200m Freestyle final. Shortly after the event Ella was presented with her plate for finishing 4th overall in the 11 year old age group. This is the second year running that Ella has finished in this position, establishing her as one of the top swimmers in the South East Region. A delighted Head Coach Bill Penny said: “The Regionals this year have demonstrated that Atlantis has taken another significant step forward. Our younger swimmers are now competing for the top ten places and pressing on national times. This sets a great foundation for the future.” Four swimmers from Atlantis head to Scotland next week to swim in the Scottish National Championships and in early July the final round of the Sussex League brings Atlantis up against the top two clubs in Sussex.

Royal United made it two tournament wins out of two when they won the Handcross six-a-side. On a lovely warm day, Royal United played six and won six, scoring 19 goals whilst only conceding two. With Zac Love and Joshua Wood sharing the goalkeeping duties to give Aaron Chaplin a run out on pitch, Royals dominated proceedings, but all the games were played in a very good spirit. Royal goal scorers were Stanley Rice (5), Jake Legrange (4), Joshua Wood (3), Jacob Waller (3), Alex Parsons (2), Connor Cushing and Zac Love. All the boys played well today, but debutant Alex Parsons has settled into the squad very quickly and looks an exceptional player. Manager Richard Chaplin said: “It was a well run tournament, with all the teams being a credit to their respective clubs.”
