Students celebrate A-level success Continued from Page 1 Eighty-five per cent of Further Maths students achieved A*/A/B, as did 64 per cent of Government and Politics students. Art and Design had a 99 per cent pass rate (67 per cent A*/A/B) and the figure for Chemistry was also 99 per cent (65 per cent A*/A/B). The pass rate at AS level was 94 per cent, with 46 per cent achieving A/B. Photography enjoyed a 100 per cent pass rate, with 80 per cent at A/B. Vocational students also excelled, with 100 per cent of Child Care Level 2 Diploma students achieving an A* or A. The best A-level results for 20 years are being celebrated at Christ’s Hospital, where the overall pass rate was 99.4 per cent. The school scored an A*-B pass rate of 80.2 per cent and an average UCAS points total of over 346 points per pupil, with 33 pupils achieving A* or A grades in all subjects and 13 set for Oxford or Cambridge. Jessica Eastwood and Si ji Fan both gained four A* grades and will read Chemistry at Oxford and Law at Cambridge respectively. Phoebe Hames also gained straight A* grades and will read Classics at Cambridge. Twins Adam and Robert Mathias, who both achieved two A*s and one A, are heading to Cambridge on organ and choral scholarships respectively. Adam will begin his course in 2012 after winning a place at Windsor Castle as the Organ Scholar at St George’s Chapel. He said: “This looks like being a pretty amazing gap year. I’m a little nervous but very excited.” With 40 per cent of all grades at A*/A and 14 per cent of all girls achieving straight A*/A grades, Farlington girls are also celebrating success. All girls bar one are into their first choice of university and course – and the girl who just missed already has two offers through clearing. Katherine Hawkes will go to Oxford, Fern Coleman to King’s College, Rhiannon Dunlop to Exeter and Katie Ling to Durham. Ten students at The Weald,

The news that less than two per cent of a £530 million fund has been allocated towards improving the broadband network of rural Sussex should be welcomed, albeit begrudgingly and with the acknowledgement that this may deliver too little, too late, again. When I attended the broadband summit I asked on several occasions where were the price list details to help communities plan and deliver on these promises? While the discussion continues within council committees, we must realise that business and opportunities will continue to be missed because we cannot act fast enough. Our actions, like our broadband, are under-delivered. The average speed of broadband for the UK was reported as 3Mbps in 2010. The aim of this new fast broadband is to ensure that at least 5Mbps is available for every connection. By the time they deliver on these speeds, Sussex will most likely remain a county delivering the least amount of broadband speed to its residents. As a means of economic growth and opportunity, high-speed and unrestricted internet provides individuals with access to communities, commerce and education, while making less impact on the environment. We should embrace these little funds, but not stop at demanding that the speeds and features of our internet should be leading and not limping.
£6m boost for West Sussex broadband West Sussex County Council has been awarded £6.26 million towards improving broadband connections in the county. The government funding is part of £530 million nationwide, designed to ensure nine out of 10 homes have a superfast connection within four years. Cllr Lionel Barnard, deputy leader of the county council, said: “West Sussex County Council has been doing a lot of work with internet service providers and we are committed to the need to improve broadband in West Sussex. “A good broadband connection is vital for businesses, many of which are home-based. We need to ensure this happens to encourage business development in West Sussex.” The county council has been lobbying internet service providers to help get faster broadband in West Sussex. Despite a range of technologies available, there are many parts of the county where it is not possible to get a usable broadband connection, especially in the rural areas. Very few areas in the county so far have access to superfast broadband and West Sussex even has three nonbroadband telephone exchanges – East Marden, Plaistow and Sutton. The funding will be used to cover the gaps in the county which will miss out on superfast broadband in

the commercial roll-out. A summit looking at broadband provision was held at County Hall this year, hosted by Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert and the county council.
Parts of the county ‘cannot get broadband at all ’
As a result of this, a community website is being set up to provide a forum for residents to get involved and share their broadband experiences. All this will provide vital information on how good broadband coverage is across the county. Cllr Louise Goldsmith, leader of
the county council, said: “Our aim is to ensure everyone in the county – residents and businesses – has access to a fast broadband connection. The funding will help us to achieve this goal. “We will also be working closely with the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership as the broadband improvements develop.” Mr Herbert said: “I am delighted that West Sussex has been given this funding to improve the broadband network. “Parts of the county cannot get broadband at all, let alone superfast. It is especially damaging for rural businesses. We need to be better connected to help create jobs in the future and access new services. “I look forward to seeing the county council’s plans to use this money so that the whole county has broadband access and nine out of 10 homes have superfast connection. “I also welcome the county council’s commitment to set up an online forum so that local people can be kept in touch with developments and rural communities in particular can be involved in planning the network. “It is really encouraging to think that West Sussex will no longer be in the slow lane, with broadband for every household and superfast speeds for most in just four years’ time.”
News in Brief Crash victim named A woman who died in a road crash in Amberley has been named as 68-year-old Cecelia Hearn, of East Street, Amberley. Mrs Hearn was driving a Ford Fiesta on the B2139 when it was involved in a collision with a Saab at about 5pm on Thursday last week. A 69-year-old woman from Amberley, a passenger in the Fiesta, was seriously injured but was said to be recovering after being airlifted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. A 44-year-old woman from Tangmere, a passenger in the Saab, sustained an ankle injury and serious bruising but was released from Worthing Hospital. The 40-year-old male driver of the Saab and a 69-year-old female passenger were treated at Worthing Hospital for minor injuries. The road was closed for several hours. Prepared for trouble Horsham District Council has been on standby to introduce its emergency plan in support of police during public disorder. The emergency plan was last brought into action during the severe weather episodes of 2010. Cllr Roger Arthur, council Cabinet member for a safer and healthier district, said: “Reassuring our communities that the council has plans in place to deal with these unforeseen situations is important, given the unfolding of events across the country last week. “The council was contacted by several local residents and businesses asking if the council had arrangements in place should such events present themselves locally. “Although the Horsham district is a low-risk area for such events, we would like to reassure the community that we are prepared should it be necessary to take action.”
Rape allegation Police attended Brighton Road, Horsham, on Sunday morning after a woman made an allegation of rape. The woman claims to have been raped at a property in Brighton Road in the early hours of Sunday by a man known to her. West Sussex CID continued the investigation.
Driver injured A male driver suffered minor injuries in a crash on the A264 near Faygate at 7.40am on Monday. Susie added: “The schoolchildren said ‘wow’ and think it’s really good.”

New daytime clubs, providing sport and leisure activities for adults with learning difficulties, have been opened in Horsham and five other places in West Sussex. Really flying Dragonflies at Pulborough Brooks nature reserve are reaching speeds of up to 36km per hour, according to the RSPB. Site manager Pete Hughes said: “Southern hawkers, brown hawkers, emperors, emerald damselflies, ruddy darters and others can be easily seen within a few minutes of the visitor centre. “Over the course of the Summer, we can see 25 species here – nearly two-thirds of the UK’s resident types of dragonflies and damselflies. “The ‘black pond’ on the edge of the heathland restoration area has been brilliant for dragonflies recently.”

A nibble or a feast? You decide Some of the district’s most accomplished chefs and food producers are preparing to cook up a range of local produce dishes, as part of the Big Nibble On Saturday, September 3, a demonstration kitchen named the Live Cookery Theatre will arrive in Horsham to take pride of place in the Carfax. The high-spec kitchen will be used by chefs from local businesses, who will form a live programme of entertainment to showcase their culinary skills. This cookery spectacular is one of the most highly anticipated elements of the Big Nibble weekend, organised by Horsham District Council, with local produce being used as part of each demonstration. The programme will be
professionally compered by foodie Hilary Knight, founder of Sussex Food Network, who works with chefs and food and drink producers from across Sussex. There will be opportunities for free tasters, together with takeaway recipe sheets for each dish, so people can practice the experience for themselves. The live programme will take place between 10am and 4pm on September 3, surrounding a huge and extended produce market in the Carfax (9am to 5pm). Market-goers will be able to browse, sample and purchase a mix

The district council and Horsham Markets are encouraging visitors to get involved in a Horsham beer trail, a Great British car rally and a nibble trail with free taster portions. For the first time, the event will go district-wide on Sunday, September 4, when visitors can enjoy free Southdown historic bus rides across the district, along routes recreated from the Sixties and Seventies. Buses will visit Billingshurst, Henfield, Pulborough, Southwater, Steyning and Storrington. For car lovers, a classic rally involving TVRs, Morgans and Aston Martins will take place, parking up in East Street and the Carfax. Loveable ladies of mature years, The Grans, first seen in Horsham as part of the East Street opening, will return with their shopping trolleys after stirring up trouble at the Glastonbury Festival. Live music from six stages across the town is promised as the event coincides with the launch of the monthlong Horsham Festival of Sound. The money was raised from visitor donations, concert ticket and refreshment sales and sponsorship of the floral displays. Achieving Recovery through the Kingdom (ARK) is a new Christian charity supported and run by volunteers from local churches. It provides a friendly, safe place for people who are seeking a way out of issues such as homelessness, addiction and poverty. Brothers’ wheel help for Sands

Two brothers cycled 1,700km across Europe after their sister’s baby was still-born. George and Tim Sexton have so far raised £3,500 for Sands, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity, in recognition of the support it provided following the death. But the brothers are hoping for more donations towards their ambitious target of £17,000 after cycling through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and the Czech Republic.
A 52-year-old man from Horsham was killed in a crash on the A264 at Faygate on Wednesday evening. He was driving a Toyota Avensis which was travelling eastbound but hit a hedgerow at the edge of the westbound carriageway at about 9.45pm. A 25-year-old local man, a passenger in the car, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. The road was closed in both directions before 10pm and reopened at 3.15am yesterday (Thursday). Anyone with information can contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999, quoting serial 1784 of August 18.

Your article about Pulborough villagers holding a ‘funeral’ in protest at plans to build on greenfield land backing onto Stane Street Close (The Resident, August 12) was a welcome focus on the problems facing our village. Pulborough is rapidly becoming a community without a true centre, mainly due to over-development on the A29 heading north. This linear development is leading to unsustainable pressure on our infrastructure. Our drainage system is creaking under the strain. Both Southern Water and the Environment Agency have expressed concerns about Chichester-based Hanbury Properties Ltd’s attempt to develop this land, which is a haven for a number of protected wildlife species. Our road network is overly congested, especially on the A29 where the new development is planned. The Tesco supermarket on the A29, which was built against much local opposition, now attracts 25,000 customer visits a week. People in Pulborough make just 2,000 of those shopping visits. This means we are now burdened with an additional 46,000 weekly car journeys in and out of the village since the supermarket was built. The village primary school, one the most highly rated by Ofsted in England, is being forced to add two new classrooms this Summer because of the influx of new homes. Some parents are choosing to send their children to smaller state schools outside the village. Horsham District Council took a carefully considered strategic decision not to develop Pulborough further as a result of its Local Plan Review. The Planning Inspectorate has thwarted it on a number of occasions on appeal, but this is no reason to abandon its stance. Pulborough is suffering opportunist, piecemeal development of little architectural or ecological merit, which is displacing its true centre and causing the village to lose its sense of place. Like many others in the village, I am extremely disappointed that Pulborough Parish Council did not object to this planning application. Now is not the time to roll over and play dead. It is interesting to note that there has not been a single parish councillor appointed to the council as a result of an election by voters in the village since 2003. On this basis it is difficult to understand how the council can be said to represent the views of the majority in Pulborough. Gaetano Ferrieri has been on hunger strike since June 4, in front of Montecitorio Palace (Italian Parliament headquarters). Breaking the mould There has been an enormous amount of rhetoric and speculation flying around following the recent city riots. Having distilled many of the proposed solutions, I am at a complete loss to understand why our politicians (of all hues) can’t see the obvious driving factors behind that behaviour. Everyone I have spoken to seems to be in complete agreement about the cause and the solution. The ludicrous, downright dangerous and utterly irresponsible Labour immigration policies of the last 13 years are a good start. Didn’t they ever notice that a pluralistic society would be challenged in our tiny country, especially as it was already becoming overcrowded at the start of their disastrous time in government? Add to this their wholesale benefits-for-all culture and there you have the raw ingredients for dissention. The solutions which must be imposed by the current administration are utterly necessary to restore our cherished way of life. It is not the coalition’s fault. When I was a boy at school, we visited a Crown Court. We tiptoed in the place in absolute silence, for here was a place that quite literally held the power of life and death. We learned respect. When we stepped out of line it was usually a member of the community who disciplined us, not the police, who had more serious matters to deal with. We need laws that ensure the punishments fit the crimes and a good idea would be to introduce some kind of national service, although not necessarily in the forces. Welcome to the country of Hobbesian brutality, Orwellian authority, ill-informed opinions and misguided obscenity. Firstly, I want to set this straight because it’s been thoroughly annoying me. The people partaking in the riots are not anarchists, as much as every red-top in the UK will try to have you believe. As a quick leaf through the Oxford Dictionary will explain, the word ‘anarchy’ derives from the Greek ‘anarkhos’, ‘an-’ meaning ‘without’ and ‘arkhos’ meaning ‘chief’ or ‘ruler’. Although in recent times the word has become associated with disorder and chaos, the political doctrine of anarchism has little to do with such notions, and instead is based on a thoroughly more optimistic view of human nature than most other political creeds. Thus, the rioters are not anarchists as they have no political agenda and are not trying to remove the ‘ruler’ – at least not deliberately. Although they may be causing what is now commonly referred to as anarchy, a better noun should really be found to address them rather than undermining a flawed, but perfectly valid, political philosophy through the power of association. Now that’s out the way, I shall try to make sense of something that seems senseless. On Friday, August 5, Mark Duggan, alleged gang member and drug dealer, was shot and killed by the police. Duggan was carrying a loaded handgun, though it is now reported by the IPCC that ballistic tests show he had not fired. The next day, a crowd gathered at Tottenham police station to appeal against Mark Duggan’s ‘murder’. The crowd began to throw bottles and this turned into a spontaneous riot, with the town centre being looted and the post office set on fire. Sunday night saw several acts of organised vandalism and looting in areas of London. Organised copycat acts began on the evening of August 8, spreading beyond London to cities including Bristol, Birmingham and Liverpool. Youths committed arson and vandalism and looted in much larger numbers, with Croydon and Clapham Junction being perhaps the worst affected. Cameron returned to Britain, having cut short his holiday. The riot clean-up began, virally organised, getting masses out on the street to help repair damage. The police presence was increased, but riots broke out in Manchester, Wolverhampton and West Bromwich, among others. Many commentators are saying the riots are causeless, that with no political purpose or protest they simply boil down to opportunism and criminality. Many say the riots are unjustifiable. They may be right in saying that, but what in this world is justifiable? After nearly two years I would appreciate someone justifying why, although MPs fraudulently fiddled their expenses, only six received criminal convictions. I would appreciate someone justifying the bonuses the bankers who drove our economy into the ground receive, when the public takes brutal cuts on their behalf. I would appreciate someone justifying the ‘13 to 20 per cent’ of children who leave school illiterate and with minimal numeracy skills, who have no future and no hope of a future. In all, I would appreciate someone justifying the greed, corruption and inequality of our ‘sick society’, but no one really can (and it seems that if you wear a suit, you are above the law).
Yes, the riots are a horribly bleak view of human nature. Of course they largely represent a mass of criminality and opportunism, but this doesn’t mean they are not causeless. When you are so disconnected from your community that you don’t mind recklessly torching it, something has gone horribly wrong. There are deep, systematic failures in our government and in our society that have caused these riots. At the very base, we have capitalism itself mixed with the estrangement and isolation of huge wealth inequality. You base a society on consumption, and constantly drive into each person that consuming will make them happy, but then leave those at the bottom of society not able to afford ‘happiness’. Add to this recipe for disaster that each person from this underclass has not learnt to vocalise their anger. They slipped through the net at school and came out with no qualifications, even less to show in the realms of social skills. Frustration, boredom and opportunism combine and suddenly each member of this underclass has found their entitlement to happiness – raiding Foot Locker. This argument seems to lose gravitas when we look at how the affluent boroughs of Enfield and Ealing were vandalised. The fact remains that vast amounts of disruption were brought about by arson and general destruction, rather than looting. But my suggestion is that this is not an economic underclass by definition, although wealth is a key factor – rather they are a social underclass. These people are alienated from their fragmented communities and are children of children of children who have gradually lost faith in aspiration. In a sort of twisted logic, it makes sense that they should destroy the communities they feel offer them so little and hold no place for them. Perhaps it explains why certain cities didn’t suffer riots. It seems that the cultural differences of community mentality are what separate the chaos from the empty twilight streets, perhaps Thatcher’s dominant southern atomistic individualism is to blame. I asked myself if I would have taken part in the riots and it reminded me of something I did when I was younger. It was my first year of secondary school, so I was about 12. I was enjoying school and doing well academically and I don’t remember being unhappy. But I stole my mum’s credit card and took out a fairly substantial amount of money. I bought stuff I didn’t need or even really want. I went out by myself, to the cinema, to town, buying things. Why? I still couldn’t tell you. I was hardly unhappy. But there was a void of sorts, something I thought could be filled with material goods. In this society we are programmed to consume, with the media attacking us from every angle at every moment. With a mass of people restricted in this consumption, it doesn’t surprise me that they went out and took for themselves when they saw the police couldn’t stop them. It is selfishness and greed and materialism and opportunism, but it is what we were trained to do. To me, this is not criminality, although it is wrong. It highlights a generation so very lost and hopeless, so pitiful. This doesn’t justify the riots. But when there is a generation of kids who are so desensitised, immoral, materialistic, disillusioned and disaffected, who haven’t learnt to verbalise their frustration, that is a cause and one that needs to be addressed with more than a police presence.

Steyning Line and the stations that served it. Heading southbound until terminating at Bramber, the railway of old is brought back to life. Our journey begins with a stop that needs no introduction, our very own Horsham station. The mid-19th Century conjures images of smog, factories and bustling streets. While Horsham largely avoided the negatives, it was hoped a station at Horsham would encourage many eager customers to visit a popular market town. As early as 1834, with talk of a London-Brighton line surfacing, evidence of this anticipation can be seen through the building of a Railway Hotel on Brighton Road. In fact, Horsham wouldn’t hear the clatter of wheel on track until 1848 with the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) putting Horsham firmly on the rail map. Further links were sought thereafter, but Colonel Yolland, the Inspector of Railways for the Board of Trade, frustrated the town with his numerous postponements of the HorshamGuildford Direct Railway. Finally though, on October 2, 1865, the line was opened – and thanks to considerable expansion of the station during the 1860s, the Steyning, Horsham-Guildford and LondonBrighton lines could all be catered for. Some opposed a station, perhaps concerned at how the first seemingly intimidating locomotives would change Horsham’s landscape and way of life. Generally though, reports of the early station were positive. The first ever train to leave Horsham station had been celebrated with a public dinner at the King’s Head and the line to Guildford was greeted with equal enthusiasm. Such was its initial popularity that the West Sussex Gazette reported on the day the line opened that some locals weren’t satisfied with the single journey on Puffing Billy and would leave Horsham station to traverse the line various times that day. This Horsham-Guildford line was to close just months before its 100th birthday and by the 1960s much had changed. Horsham station welcomed the age of electricity on July 2, 1938, when most passenger services were electrified and the same year saw the current station, a Grade II listed building, built. A decade later the rail network was nationalised and the coming years witnessed the rise of commuting, with cars more affordable than ever before. With people using the station to
access work in London, as opposed to trade in the local area, the normal sight for a station hand was herds of businessmen, no longer herds of cattle or other animals ready for market. Once an hour from Guildford, Horsham was now an hour from the capital and subsequently the kind of passenger changed. World War II had threatened the future of Horsham station as many opted for the cheaper and more accessible motor-buses, but through the growing tendency to commute the station survived.
Horsham station has ‘seen its fair share of tragedy ’
Though largely a success story, Horsham station has seen its fair share of tragedy. In 1942, a freight train from Horsham to Steyning was machine-gunned by a German aircraft which killed the driver. Thirty years later, in January 1972, an inquiry told of 14 passenger injuries and, miraculously, no deaths when an approaching train took six of eight supports out of one side of the road bridge. That July, a driver was identified by his possessions after his train collided with a wall. These events did not halt Horsham’s progress, with the station’s longevity explainable by its ability to reinvent itself. A total of £100,000 was invested to replace the subway with a footbridge and to extend platforms in 1948 and a £150,000 refurbishment in 1999 provided us with the station we have today. Times have changed drastically since the days of Bert Andrews, who worked on the Horsham-Guildford line on the day it closed, or his greatgrandfather, who worked on the day it was opened. The family tradition of working on the lines is but a distant memory as ticket machines, barriers and digital timetables do most of the work at the modern station – a trend that is set to continue at Horsham. The station will soon see big changes with refurbishments, thanks to the National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP). But its ability to survive what the past has thrown at it gives us a great deal to be proud of and plenty of hope that Horsham station is on the right tracks.

A new effort to tackle speeding and congestion Traffic in our villages is under the spotlight. Horsham District Council’s scrutiny and overview committee has set up a working group to look at the traffic situation in villages across the district. The aim of the group is to examine and seek solutions to the quantity of traffic passing through the villages, speeding and cars parking around local schools. Rather than looking at individual village case studies, the working group will consider an overview of generic or common problems faced in the villages. It will: • Review the areas and villages which are notoriously bad for traffic, speeding and congestion • Review the effectiveness of existing traffic calming measures • Explore whether traffic regulation orders could be obtained for some of the traffic hotspots • Review the enforcement of speed
limits • Explore effective and low-cost traffic calming and slowing options • Consider any new proposed developments in the villages and what impact these will have
Although many of these issues fall within the remit of West Sussex County Council, the scrutiny and overview committee aims to identify key issues and potential solutions. Representatives of the county council will be invited to the next meeting of the working group to discuss and understand decisions and processes. Cllr David Sheldon, chairman of the scrutiny and overview committee, said: “It’s clear that many residents are concerned about the volume and speed of traffic in our towns and villages. “This working group has been set up to get a much better view of the problem across the district and to look for solutions or ways of working that could be adopted to help

Triumph for Tomas, 13 A budding engine engineer from Horsham visited the Triumph Motorcycle factory in Hinckley to experience his dream job. As part of Tanbridge House School’s Ambassador Campaign, 13-year-old Tomas Murphy toured the production line and testing facilities before getting up close and personal with a new engine.
And he picked up some useful advice about how best to pursue his intended career. Tomas said: “This has been an amazing day. I have really enjoyed myself and one day want to come to work for Triumph. Thank you to everyone involved who made this experience possible.”

Three chefs from restaurants in the area are in the running for this year’s Sussex Food and Drink Awards. The competition has reached the half way point, with over 2,300 votes already received and Bradley Jordan from Restaurant Tristan, Hanna
Payne from The Pass at South Lodge and Craig Holden from The Mill House in Ashington have been shortlisted. The chefs are up for the title of Sussex Young Chef of the Year and they join eight other hopefuls from pubs, restaurants and cafes from across the region such as Hotel Du Vin in Brighton and Jeremy’s in Borde Hill. Her forte is pastries and cake decorating so the young chef has plans to run her own desert bar in the future. Matt Gillan, Head Chef at The Pass, said: “Hanna is a very competent sous chef who I trust whole-heartedly with my kitchen in my absence. She commands the brigade with confidence ensuring high standards are consistently delivered for our guests.” The youngest of the three is Craig, at just 21. The chef’s signature dish is braised belly of pork with a warm Waldorf salad and a Dijon cider sauce. Richard Ockelford, head chef at the Mill House, describes Craig as: “different to many young chefs I have worked with, the main reason being that instead of wanting to follow culinary trends and gimmicks, he prefers to create his own methods and create bespoke recipes to suit our kitchen

A Horsham-based business has been involved in the clean-up operation of the Reeves Furniture Shop in Croydon in the wake of the riots, which took place recently. Les Searle Plant Hire and Sales, a heavy haulage business that specialises in the haulage of demolition equipment across the country, transported a 60-tonne machine with arms of 26 metres to help demolish what was left of the shop damaged by fire. Similarly to the Reeves Furniture store, Les Searle Plant Hire and Sales has been handed down from generation to generation, having been established by the Searle family in 1913. Denise Searle, Director of Le Searle Plant Hire and Sales, said: “We were pleased to be asked to get involved in the large clean-up activity following
the riots. It was an emotional job for us. “We understand what it means to run a business for such a long time. I can’t imagine how we would feel if we lost our business and way of life for the whole family.” The La Searle Plant Hire and Sales business has been operating for almost 100 years and has been based at its site on Parsonage Way in Horsham since the beginning.

Horsham to get a Pret! Pret A Manger, the chain of fast and fresh sandwhiches and lunches, is expanding with a new coffee concept store and Horsham is on the list to get one. The new, smaller stores will be called Coffee Pret Kitchens and they are currently being developed with a trial already underway on Vauxhall Bridge Road in London. It is thought that the new style of store will be ideal for high streets and smaller towns outside of London. Russell Kirkham at Pret A Manger said: “We are just trying to find the right location in Horsham. We did have somewhere in mind but it wasn’t right. “So now it’s just a case of finding a suitable space as it’s definitely a target town we’d like to move into.” The new outlets are designed for fewer customers and staff and will have less produce on display. The look and feel of the shops is believed to incorporate more wood than stainless steel, which has become a recognisable feature in the larger stores.

Weighing nearly 17 stone she had to lose at least five stone to give herself a chance. Due to all of Sue’s health issues she had to be pushed in a wheelchair by her daughters whenever she wanted to go shopping which would tire her out very quickly and of course keep her confidence at a constant low. She longed to be like other ‘normal’ people who could just walk themselves around the shops without any assistance. It was then that Sue discovered the Miruji Wellbeing Chair and the Sit&Slim programme. Stage star is doing it like Jessie J Gig Guide A local star in the making has been on location filming her role in the Brit award-winning star’s latest music video
A budding young entertainer has been given a big break after getting a part in a Jessie J music video. Ysabel Hardy, from Southwater, was given the opportunity to work on the video, for a track called Who’s Laughing Now, by a London casting agency and spent a day filming with the pop star. Ysabel said: “It was a really fun shoot. First we got called into wardrobe and makeup and then we did a locker scene where we got sprayed with bath bubbles.” Ysabel is no stranger to lights, cameras and action. The nine year-old is already one to watch in entertainment and is a so-called ‘triple threat’
as an actress, singer and dancer. Although she is unsure where the music video role will take her, Ysabel has plans to go to drama school as soon as she can and the rising star is clear about her goal: “I want to be a singer, an actress, a dancer or a fashion model. And live in a mansion”, she told The Resident. Speaking about one of her idols, Jessie J, Ysabel added: “She was really kind and nice, and although she was a bit late, she gave us a signed picture of herself on her album cover. The whole day was great.” Ysabel will soon be putting all her skills to good use in two forthcoming productions at The Capitol in Horsham; The King and I and Les Miserables. The Ashington Festival takes place on Saturday, August 20, and is set to be as popular and fun-packed as ever. The event starts with a large carnival procession at 1.30pm including colourful floats walking groups, bands, majorette troops, vintage vehicles, clowns and more. Following the parade, the festivities will continue at Ashington Recreation Ground, Church Lane, and entertainment will be in the form of a mountain bike stunt and the Wonder Girls Majorettes, who will do a dance routine. The Findon Downs Dog Training Club will perform dog agility skills and Charlie the Clown will be there with plenty of children’s entertainment. On the recreation ground, there will be a fun fair, car boot sale, a children’s farm and more. Plus, have a go at archery and go carting. Also on the recreation ground will be an American and British classic, Hot Rod and custom car show. There will be food, including a pig roast, and a licensed bar for the afternoon and the evening and the event continues into the evening with a disco by Retrospect Event Sound and live band, Champagne SuperNova. The Importance of Being Earnest
It was a rather convivial occasion at The Capitol last week, when a group of local teenagers staged a stellar performance of The Importance of Being Earnest in The Studio. The youngsters, all aged between 16 and 19 are members of the Fresnel Theatre Group and together they produced, directed, acted in and made the costumes for the Oscar Wilde classic. And what a talented bunch they are. A couple of the gang are already part of the National Youth Theatre
– a sign of the standard that was on display throughout the production. And among them are a couple with bright futures in not only acting but wardrobe design too. Rosy Rudkin designed and made the clothes for the cast, all of which were imaginative and interesting and perfectly reflected the characters wearing them. The play captured the era it was set in perfectly. The emphasis of every word spoken by the aristocrats and upper classes was believable, and its leading man, Algernon played by Nicholas Henman, handled line after line, often at a fast pace, perfectly. Credit to co-director Laurence Baker, who worked with the Fresnel Group’s founder Julia Martin to pace the play brilliantly, which on the

Something for the little ones Two shows for your little ones are coming to The Hawth this Autumn. A Bird in Your Ear gives young audiences the chance to hear a collection of stories, in which all the characters have been imaginatively created by children in primary school. Genies in teapots and hat-munching squirrels are just a few of the characters you can take the kids to see in The Studio on Saturday September 24. There will be clues waiting for you inside the venue and each tale is brought to life with puppets, original
songs and the opportunity to jump on stage and join in! Then, on Sunday, October 2, a little boy will be asking the Way Back Home in a play by the same name. When the boy finds a plane in his cupboard, he flies it as high as he can until he lands on the moon. night went remarkably smoothly considering it was a ‘for one night only’ production. The play’s script is surprisingly relevant to society today, with great humour coming from Algernon about his feelings on women and marriage. More laughs came from Nicholas’ female co-stars whose verbal tug of war when speaking about the man they think they are in love with was both malicious and charming at the same time. A couple of forgotten lines didn’t matter to the crowd, because everything else was spot on. A jolly good show, one thought.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
At first glance, this film seemed it would appeal to those who like monkeys and those who like horror. It is packed with both, so if you don’t fancy spending what is the second half of the movie with angry apes bearing their teeth at the camera lens then stay away. It didn’t have much promise initially. And I mean before I’d even sat in my seat. After all, these Hollywood franchise series of films do have a
history of fizzling out after the third or fourth attempt. So I was sceptical about this, the next in the Planet of the Apes saga (a prequel to both originals) and was lured entirely by James Franco and Frieda Pinto - two exceptional talents who have yet to make a bad film (Slumdog Millionaire being my all-time favourite). But more about them later. Much to my surprise, The Rise of the Planet of the, Rising Apes… or Planet of the Apes Rising, or whatever it is called, turned out to be an intelligent, perfectly pieced together epic. It was the perfect balance of drama, action and a hint of romance and humour, all from a script that had
substance. Safe in the knowledge that its leading stars would deliver, perhaps the biggest shock was the storyline, which will leave you wondering about the possibility of what happens, happening in real life (trying not to give too much away here). The moral of the story is as clear as day – don’t mess with monkeys in science labs. Well, ok, maybe it’s not quite as flippant as that. But the film does expose the treatment and risks of animal testing for medical gain and highlights how advances in technology and travel could spell the end for mankind if a deadly virus were to spread. It’s thought provoking stuff,
especially given that what I was expecting was a bunch of apes hanging off the Golden Gate Bridge swinging for passing helicopters. Franco and Pinto are great together. Both have a warmth that not only made them a suitable match, but meant their care and compassion for apes was believable. Refreshingly, the film focused as much on the characters as it did on the action, with some sensitive moments played by Franco and his father, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. And credit must go to the team behind the motion capture technology used to create the apes themselves, with the majority of the work being
done by former Gollum actor Andy Serkis. He provided the movements and expressions, which although were pretty creepy at times, are an impressive element to modern film. Rise of the Planet of the Apes stands alone if you’ve never seen the other ‘apes’ films. It had all the elements of a Hollywood blockbuster, while seeming more intelligent and slick, and all without any ego-fuelled A-listers flexing their muscles. I have heard that Landlords should be aware of new regulations relating to gas certificates. Can you advise?
To comply with The Gas Safety (Installations and Use) Regulations (GSUR), the flue for gas central heating boilers sited on internal walls must be visibly inspected throughout its route but, if built into a ceiling void the ability to do so is impaired unless inspection panels are part of the construction. In November 2010 the Health and Safety Executive issued new guidelines and Landlords have until 31st December 2012 to arrange for inspection hatches for such flues. After 1st January 2013 any gas engineer working on a system where the complete flue is not visible will advise the Landlord that the system is “at risk” in accordance with the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (GIUSP) and turn off the gas supply to the boiler so it cannot be used. Such flue systems are most common in multi-storey flats and apartments built since 2000 as they enabled greater flexibility in the building design. Some modern terraced and other homes could also be affected. If your property has a concealed flue, by the 1st January 2013 you will have to either;
• Arrange for the installation of inspection hatches, by a Gas Safe engineer, throughout the length of the concealed flue • Relocate/replace the current boiler and flue to an outside wall • Replace the boiler with an alternative form of heating If your property is under two years old, then the builder is responsible to put right any defects or damage caused by non-compliance with NHBC technical standards. If between three to ten years old, the NHBC provides insurance cover for any defect in a flue or chimney resulting from non-compliance with NHBC standards that cause a danger to health and safety. In the interim period, where no inspection hatches are fitted, the registered gas engineer will carry out a simple risk assessment which should ensure that the risk from exposure to CO is managed in the shortterm ie installing a CO (carbon monoxide) alarm if not already fitted. Until the 31st December 2012 as long as the boiler passes the series of safety checks, and the risk assessment does not identify any concerns about its safety, the boiler can continue to be used. Urgent action needs to be taken – after the 31st December 2012; any appliance where the complete flue is not visible will be condemned and disconnected. Public want 20mph limits, but not the enforcement Sixty-seven per cent of people think that 20mph zones should be used outside schools according to the latest poll of nearly 4000 people by the Institute of Advanced Motoring. A further 38 per cent think that they should be used on roads with amenities such as parks and shops, but only a quarter would like to see them made the default speed limit in all built-up areas. Forty-three per cent of people would like the road outside their house to have a 20mph speed limit, but opinion is split here as 39 per cent wouldn’t. Forty per cent of people think that this speed limit is best enforced by speed limit signs, leaving the police to enforce the limit and the public to comply. Measures to physically slow people down are less popular, with only 20 per cent in favour of safety cameras, and 21 per cent supporting a combination of measures including road humps and cameras. Respondents felt that enforcing the limit in 20mph zones should be of medium priority compared to other road policing duties. IAM head of road safety Kevin Delaney said: “The IAM supports the selective use of 20mph speed limits where there is clear evidence that the risk of casualties will be reduced. “But blanket 20mph speed limits or limits at inappropriate sites risk widespread disregard by drivers who do not recognise a necessity for them. Consultation with, and buy-in from, local people here is essential. “Passive enforcement measures, such as speed bumps, are unpopular and active enforcement by police is unrealistic in the current financial climate. If lower speed limits are restricted to locations and times where there is an obvious need, responsible drivers, who are the overwhelming majority, will adhere to them without the need for enforcement.” What do we think about the enforcement in Horsham? Anywhere that has a great density of pedestrian footfall should have a 20mph limit, reducing the risk of any accidents – drivers will be slower and in theory be able to react in time if say, a child ran across their path. The technical study confounds conventional car categories – the Audi urban concept combines elements of a racing car, a roadster, a fun car and an urban car into one radical new concept. The Audi urban concept car is not descended from any previous model – its development is based on the strict principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction. The result is a concept car with no unnecessary weight, and one that concentrates on the pure essence of dynamic motion. The stunning new concept has a sleek body. The wheels are freestanding, and the surrounding protective plates feature ‘blinking’ strips of LED lights. The highly-concentrated look of the technical study, with its forward-urging lines, is dynamic and emotional, and lends a completely new impetus to the Audi design language.
There is room for two people on board, their position slightly staggered and at a sporty, low level. All controls and materials are subject to the dictates of ultra-lightweight construction to ensure they convey a unique, sensory allure. The driver can adjust the steering wheel and pedals for his or her own driving position. Entry to the car is through the tailgate, while the roof is designed to be manoeuvrable and slides to the rear to open. The Audi urban concept rides on 21-inch wheels. Van-tastic Vauxhalls top the charts for private buyers Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles topped the sales charts in July with retail volume up by 37 per cent year-on-year, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. The British-built Vivaro was also number one in the highly competitive retail medium van segment, with sales up by 88 per cent on last year. Vauxhall’s retail van sales were buoyed by the offer of four years’ 0% APR finance, four years’ free servicing, a four year warranty and four years’ AA cover. “July has proved to be yet another big month for Vauxhall van sales,” said Richard Collier, Vauxhall’s National Commercial Vehicle and B2B Sales Manager. “I am pleased that we are number one at retail for the fourth time this year. Horsham kick off their season at home to Bury Town tomorrow (Saturday) – and they will be looking to prove people wrong right from the start. It has been an intriguing Summer for the Hornets. Justin Luchford was appointed manager, succeeding the long-serving John Maggs, and soon had a huge job on his hands just to build a squad. With the club moving to an expenses-only policy for players, almost all of last season’s squad followed Maggs out of the exit door and supporters will take a while to get to know the new squad. Luchford, 34, said: “It’s been a total wipeout really. I think we’ve had two or three that have stayed on. It has been tough, the hardest Summer I have ever experienced as a manager. “I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew I’d have a team in place and I knew I’d have players that want to be here, who want to give it a go, and that was the main thing. “Now we need to fine-tune it, perhaps bring a couple in. We still lack a bit of experience.” There will be a few familiar faces. Ryan Woodford and Jamahl King are two, while Williams Peauroux may be
back too. Former youth teamers Tony Nwachukwu, George Magnus and Adam Hutchings are three others who may feature, while Luchford says current youth teamers will be given a chance if they are technically, physically and mentally ready for the step up. Much more than that is anyone’s guess as the former Faversham Town manager declined to reveal his squad when we spoke to him on Tuesday. Most bookmakers make Horsham favourites to finish bottom of the Ryman League Premier Division, with up to 66-1 available for any super-optimists who fancy a push for the title. Horsham have experienced a mixed pre-season, but the manager knows this will count for nothing when it comes to the first game of the league season. He said: “We could win every game in pre-season, but it doesn’t mean anything if you go and get beaten 5-0 in the first league game. We’re learning things every game and we’re improving in areas. “We’re going to need the fans this season, I can’t express that enough. I need as many people through that gate on Saturday as possible, cheering us on from the first to the last whistle. “We can’t do it alone, we’re going to need a little bit of help. I know from previous experience that if someone
is running down the right wing and we’re getting cheered on by 300-400 people, it might just give us that little extra burst. “We need them to back us and hopefully we’ll give something back as well. Hopefully we can go out there and show them that we do care, that we’re going to give it a go. Be patient, stay with us and get through that gate!”

We know the financial situation, but we also know that the club is ambitious and it wants to go places. “If we can reach the goals set, this is going to be a big club in a couple years. I want to be a part of that.”

All eyes were on Horsham YMCA as supporters looked to see how they would respond to life back in the Sussex County League. The omens looked good – a new manager in the form of the experienced Sammy Donnelly, a clutch of new players and even glossy new goalposts created positivity around Gorings Mead as they tried to banish the nightmare of last season. The visitors, Rye United, were runners-up last season and would provide a good yardstick for Donnelly’s new-look team. And the boss was soon left with an honest appraisal – much work to be done – after a well-drilled Rye scored at each end of the first half to breeze to a 2-0 victory. YM defender Kevin Joyce left the field in the first five minutes after turning his ankle in a challenge. Rye took advantage of the enforced reshuffle, immediately scything open YM’s defence as Sam Adams threaded in Alan McMinigal who powered the ball into the roof of the net. With YM struggling to make a positive impact and unable to create any sustained pressure, Rye were happy to keep a good shape and squeeze – safe in the knowledge that the home side would eventually squander possession. The visitors were dangerous on the break and hit YM with a sucker punch just before half time. McMinigal returned the favour to his strike partner, playing in Adams who lashed into the corner for 2-0. YM marginally improved in the second half, at least testing the goalkeeper with efforts from George Hillier and Ashley Dougdale. But Rye were never seriously troubled and had the better chances to stretch their lead, forcing blocks from Ryan Peak and Dean Smith. A clean sheet in the second half appeared to be something to build on, but it got worse – much worse – on Tuesday when YM crashed to a 6-0 home defeat against Lingfield. Elsewhere in the Sussex County League, the opening fixtures proved just as fruitless for our other local sides. Storrington, under a new management team of James Baker and Nigel Dyer, went down 2-1 away to Mile Oak in Division 2. Craig Grantham levelled after an early Oak strike, but the Swans were unable to hold on for an away point as Christopher Paine scored in the 74th minute to secure all three points for Oak. Storrington followed up with a 4-0 home reverse against Dorking Wanderers on Tuesday. Steyning, another team with a new manager, look to have their work cut out again this season. Sean Pickup grabbed their consolation in a 5-1 defeat at Seaford Town.

Records fall in Horsham run riot James Herd Cricket
Sussex had a mixed week at Horsham, but a phenomenal day of cricket on Sunday will ensure that the crowd will never forget this Horsham Festival. In the important County Championship game, Worcestershire were invited to bat first in front of a large crowd. Opening bowler James Anyon stuck two early blows, but through Daryl Mitchell (66) and Moeen Ali (71) the visitors recovered well. Alexei Kervezee (49) and debutant Aneesh Kapil (54) also contributed, but Worcestershire were bowled out for 290, largely thanks to Anyon (471) and Monty Panesar (3-75). In reply, Sussex made 265 in an innings that took a similar pattern to the Worcestershire one. Batsmen got in but nobody went on to record a big score, with only Joe Gatting (61) and Kirk Wernars (53) making 50. Worcestershire set about building a big lead, but they were kept in check by the excellent, economical bowling of Panesar (4-101) and Luke Wells (2-28). Sussex struggled to finish off the innings as Ben Scott (36*) and Alan Richardson (41) added crucial runs to take Worcestershire to 311 and set Sussex an improbable 337. A monumental effort from Murray
Goodwin (122) and captain Michael Yardy (63) brought Sussex close, but they were eventually bowled out for 302 on the final day, losing by 34 runs. Goodwin said: “It’s nice to get runs but disappointing to lose because nobody remembers hundreds when you lose. “It should have been a match-winning innings, but unfortunately I got out and we just didn’t keep our wickets. Otherwise we would have won, because we had enough time.” It was Sussex’s third Championship match without a win, but Goodwin insisted belief was still high. He said: “The spirit is good, but we’re extremely disappointed because we didn’t play as well as we should have. We didn’t execute our skills well enough to win the game.” The two sides concluded the festival with an extraordinary match in the Clydesdale Bank 40-over competition.

this competition. Joyce brought up his hundred off only 66 balls, included four sixes, before being caught by Kapil off the bowling of Jack Shantry for 120. Sussex didn’t stop there though as Lou Vincent looked to keep the pressure on the Worcestershire attack with some lusty blows. Gatting (122) went to his maiden List A hundred before he was caught by James Cameron off the bowling of Gareth Andrew and he received a standing ovation from the Horsham crowd. It was the highest score by a Worcestershire player in the competition, but Brown stumped him off the bowling of Yardy and Sussex took control to win by 80 runs. Gatting said: “Early on I was playing really well, then I got a bit stuck in the 80s, but once I got to 100 I had a bit of fun! “It’s lovely playing at Horsham. You get good value for your shots, there was a good crowd and it’s a lovely ground to play on.” It has been a frustrating season for Gatting, who has been in and out of the team all year, but he knows what he needs to do to become a regular fixture in the side. He added: “When you get your opportunity, you’ve got to take it, and I took it (on Sunday). It’s nice to just let the guys know I’m around and, if they need me, they can count on me.” Sussex will look to secure their Division 1 status in the County Championship, while targeting a Lord’s final in the CB40 to finish off the season. Former Tanbridge House School pupil Chris Nash scored 28, 11 and nine and took one wicket as England Lions won 2-1 in the one-day series against Sri Lanka A.

“We can see you holding hands” and “does your boyfriend know you’re here?” are just a couple of the many homophobic chants that are regularly sung at Albion fans. Both sets of visiting supporters to The Amex – Doncaster and Gillingham – have chanted these and other rather nastier ones. After many years of supporting Brighton, with its large gay community, I’ve heard them all. Travelling to Portsmouth on Saturday, I joined a Brighton-bound train. Normally a weekend train to Brighton will be busy and Saturday was no exception, except the majority of these passengers were dressed ready to party. The reason? Brighton and Hove Pride. Established in 1993, Kick Racism Out of Football has led a very successful campaign to educate and encourage a more inclusive atmosphere at football games. But the problem of homophobic chanting remains. In 2009, gay rights charity Stonewall published a report into homophobic abuse in sport, in particular football. Two years later, thousands of fans will happily sing anti-gay songs. Imagine the outcry if these were racial. Before the season, I listened to a serving policeman who said homophobic chanting would not be tolerated at Albion games. I wonder how many arrests or ejections from the ground will take place for this. Leaving Brighton station and the many thousands of people going off to enjoy themselves around the streets of Brighton and Hove, I boarded a train to Portsmouth. Before we crossed the county border into Hampshire, four middleaged Portsmouth fans boarded the train. Within a couple of minutes the homophobic comments started. I guess it’s a sad reflection on us Albion fans on the train that we didn’t report these guys to the police. But having often seen police in football stadiums turn a blind eye to this behaviour, even with all that CCTV, I guess we just didn’t think it was worth the hassle. The Pompey fans in the ground were quiet. Even the famous Pompey chimes were only sung half-heartedly and not once did I hear “does your boyfriend know you’re here?” It may have been because Albion played so well. Perhaps it was due to the fact that Portsmouth hadn’t won in three games. Or it may just be that the majority of Pompey fans are more mature and better educated than those four on the train. Well done Portsmouth.

Roffey have Three Bridges in a spin Martin Read Cricket
Needing one more win to be certain of continued Sussex Premier League status next season, Roffey inflicted a heavy defeat on lowly Three Bridges. Electing to bat first, Three Bridges benefited from a rare spate of dropped slip catches, which at 61-1 seemed costly. But Luke Barnard, formerly with Three Bridges, and 17-year-old allrounder Matt Davies bowled 33 overs of spin in tandem and applied the brakes, steadily working their way through the visitors’ fragile batting line up. The pitch was dry and turning, with variable bounce. The accuracy of the spinners, backed by committed fielding, induced a stream of dismissals as 87-3 became 93-5 and 110-7. Two subsequent mini-stands suggested semi respectability until Three Bridges finally subsided in the 52nd over. Only Hisam Ul Haq with 38 demonstrated any fluency, tormentors Barnard and Davies finishing with a miserly 6-40 and 3-30. At the interval, Roffey skipper Mike Norris expressed surprise at Three Bridges’ ultra-defensive approach and, with 58 overs available to score 140, was understandably confident of victory against his previous club. Roffey began cautiously against hostile pace and guileful spin. After Chris Webb’s departure at 32-1, accumulated at a rate of two per over, Josh Fleming capitalised on an early let off and took command, despatching loose deliveries and bringing up his 50 with a towering six. At the 29-over drinks break the score was 86-1, with Fleming undefeated on 62. Able, wary support was provided by Theo Rivers (26) but, with 15 fours and two sixes in
his classy 84, Fleming was the only player on either side to make batting look genuinely comfortable. Both batsmen were dismissed in quick succession just short of the target, but their second-wicket stand of 102 made victory a formality, with 16 overs to spare. Bowling unchanged from the top end, Jigga Parekh took 2-39 in 20.1 overs, 12 of which were maidens. Three Bridges could have no complaints and their captain, Danny Alderman, conceded: “Roffey bowled far better than we did.” Norris said 190 might have been a tough challenge, but he added: “Our spinners, Barnard and Davies, kept them down to a manageable total, then Josh Fleming’s superb innings made the outstanding difference.”
