Jail sentences for drugs gang Darren Henwood, 37, of Park Road, Faygate

The “ringleader” of a drugs gang has been jailed for six-and-a-half years after police netted a huge quantity of high-purity cocaine. Car salesman Darren Henwood, 37, of Park Road, Faygate, was one of six men convicted of conspiracy to supply the drug. Shop worker Albert Mouhtiseb, 28, of Pampisford Road, South Croydon, was sentenced to seven years. Motor dealer Andrew Billings, 43, of Bracklesham Caravan and Boat Club, Bracklesham Bay, was sentenced to sixand-a-half years. Unemployed Charles Smith, 41, of Hanlye Lane, Cuck�ield, got four years. Barry Harlow, 65, of Arlington Crescent, East Preston, and Mark Taylor, 36, of no �ixed address, will be sentenced later. Henwood, Billings, Harlow and Taylor admitted conspiracy to supply. Mouhtiseb and Smith denied the charge but were convicted after a trial at Hove Crown Court. Lee Burton-Asante, 43, was cleared. Detectives from Sussex Police’s Serious

and Organised Crime Unit arrested Harlow and Mouhtiseb in a car at Cottesmore Golf and Country Club on April 1 last year. A package containing cocaine, with a potential estimated street value of £450,000 when cut, was seized from Harlow’s car. In the other car being used by Mouhtiseb, of�icers seized £24,000 in cash. Shortly afterwards, detectives arrested Henwood, Billings and Smith in a business unit at White Herons Farm, Forest Road, Colgate. They found equipment for use in cutting and preparing cocaine. Taylor was arrested later as a result of further enquiries. Det Chief Insp Ali Eaton said: “Henwood was the ringleader of this group, closely supported by Billings, with Harlow acting as a courier. “Taylor had passed the drugs on to Mouhtiseb, who was also a key member, for onward sale to Henwood and no doubt for later distribution when cut onto the streets of Sussex. “It was particularly satisfying for us to be able to dismantle an entire drugs distribution operation from initial couriers to the principal and his associates. “Criminals like these need to know we will relentlessly target them and bring them to justice, in the interests of all lawabiding people and local communities.” Sussex Police and The Resident wish to make it clear that there is no suggestion whatsoever of any involvement by the management or staff at the golf and country club or the farm.

Emma Gardner is a mum on a mission – to safeguard young lives on our roads through better knowledge and education. Supported by local MPs and the Sussex Air Ambulance, the Slinfold resident co-launched a campaign last May to get driving into schools and colleges across the county. And with more than 70 now participating, the pioneering work has been recognised with a Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award.

It’s that time of year again as tossers return to the Carfax

Representatives of local businesses and organisations are preparing to dress up and generally make a fool of themselves. Yes, the fourth annual Charity Pancake Race is almost upon us. This year it will be held in the Carfax from midday on Thursday, February 16, not Shrove Tuesday as in previous years. The Rotary Club of Horsham has chosen the date to avoid the school half term, as the mascot egg and spoon race will be a spectacular addition to the fun, frolics and fundraising. Organisers are appealing to businesses and organisations to enter a team of four for the traditional 80m relay race, using their own frying pan and non-slip shoes. Prizes will be awarded to winners on the day, including Best Team Fancy Dress, Best Over-40s, Winning Charity Team, Best Individual Fancy Dress, Best Flipper and Overall Winning Team. The event, which will be compered by a top radio DJ, has been organised

by the Rotary Club in partnership with Horsham District Council. Sponsors include highway maintenance company Ringway, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Non-Stop Party Shop, Rawlison Butler and South East Hearing Centres. Last year, teams were decked out in a variety of outlandish costumes, from judges’ wigs to Ninja Turtles and even a very large giraffe. Unfortunately, the giraffe rather hampered the team from the restaurant it was representing as it proved too tall to reach the sugar shakers and lemon juice without losing its head. The Resident’s team finished a very creditable third (out of three) in their heat, as their natural speed and agility was somewhat limited by their sandwich board costumes. Entry for the main competition is £25 per team, including a stall, with entry limited to 32 teams. The organisers cannot accept any responsibility for accidents. All money raised will be split between the charity chosen by the

Littlehaven crossing crash delays work Plans to “completely renew” Littlehaven level crossing were put on hold after a crash there. Gary Gaskarth, of Network Rail, told The Resident: “The level crossing closure last week was the result of a road traffic accident which saw a vehicle strike one of the gates before coming to rest on the tracks. “The road was closed from approximately 3.30pm on Monday, January 9, until the following evening, to carry out repairs to the damaged crossing. “Separately, we have plans to completely renew the Littlehaven level crossing. “This will involve replacing the gates controlled by a locally based operator with barriers controlled by a signaller via CCTV, and relaying the track and road surface through the crossing. “The crossing renewal was originally planned to take place from Saturday, January 14, and would have required the road to have been closed for 17 days. “Owing to some further design work being required, the work did not start at the weekend. We are working with West Sussex County Council to re-schedule the work and road closure and will communicate this with members of the community once it has been confirmed. “We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.”

Crash tragedy A 62-year-old man from Storrington died when his Peugeot was involved in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle on the A280 at Long Furlong, near Findon. Learn about school plan Parents and carers can drink coffee while finding out more about plans for a new secondary school. Horsham Churches Together (HCT) and educational trust Oasis, who aim to establish the school in Southwater, say it would have an open admissions policy and be inclusive of pupils from all backgrounds. Coffee mornings will be held in the council chamber, Beeson House, Lintot Square, on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and Easteds Barn, Easteds Lane, on Tuesday, all from 9am to 11am. Members of the public were also able to attend a consultation event at Beeson House as The Resident went to press yesterday (Thursday). As part of the application process, HCT and Oasis need to show there is a desire among local parents for a new school in Southwater. Bryan Steele, development worker for HCT, said: “We are right in the middle of the consultation process. “If parents in Southwater want a local school that their children can walk to, which builds on the great education and sense of community already fostered by the excellent infant and junior schools and academies in the village, they need to register their interest with us by the end of January.

“In order to see the proposed school become a reality, it is absolutely critical that parents of children currently in Years 3 and 4 indicate their intention to send their child to this school. “They can do so by attending any of the consultation meetings and also by visiting our website, www.oscs. org.uk “The application cannot proceed unless parents indicate their wish to fill at least 50 per cent of the places available in 2014 and 2015 for Year 7 students.

“However, it is important to understand that those indicating their intention to choose the new school as their child’s first choice are not in any way committing to take up that place – but simply recording their openness to consider this if the school is built. “Providing a new school in Southwater for 2014 would create the

extra capacity that is required to give parents choice, which they are unlikely to have given current student projections. “According to figures recently released by West Sussex County Council, there are now more pupils enrolled in schools in Horsham than there are available places. Without additional provision, this situation is set to get worse. “As the consultation has progressed, we have learned of pupils being bussed to schools as far away as Crawley due to the lack of available places in Horsham schools. “With development along the A24, choice for Southwater parents and students may only worsen as demand for places in Horsham schools outstrips available places. A new local school would alleviate this pressing need.” Julie Shimizu, joint moderator for HCT, said: “We are really excited to be working with Oasis. They have a great track record and we firmly believe they can deliver an excellent school for the children of Southwater. “We are impressed with Oasis’ passion for including everyone, to ensure that no one is isolated and also their commitment to developing strong local communities.”

Berkeley aims to win over sceptics Southwater residents are being asked their views about plans for 513 new houses, play areas and sports facilities on the outskirts of the village. Developer Berkeley is sending leaflets to more than 3,000 homes, directing people to www.westofsouthwater. co.uk, where they can find out more about the proposed development. The aim is to provide detailed information about the proposals and set out the infrastructure

A birthday bash for the Broadwood Men The Broadwood Men’s 40th-year celebrations started in �iery fashion at Maplehurst. The men and sister side Magog Morris gave a display of English Morris outside The White Horse before the annual torchlit procession and wassailing. After selecting a tree at John Batcheldor’s cider orchard, the Broadwood Men bashed the trunk with sticks to drive out any evil spirits lurking within. Cider was poured over the roots to enrich the soil and ensure a good crop in the coming year. And toast soaked in cider was hung in the branches of

the tree to feed the robins, who would “carry off any remaining bad spirits”. Those present recited a verse, made as much noise as possible using hooters, a shotgun, party poppers and football rattles, and sang the Wassail Song. Back at the pub, Caroline Thomas’ cake was ceremonially cut by Harry Mousdell, one of four founder members present. The others were Martyn Wyndham-Read, Jim Farr and John Dewdney. Minister heralds 101 call option Charity allocates Policing minister Nick Herbert, the MP for Arundel and South Downs, appeared on The One Show to highlight the new number for nonemergency calls to police. Sussex Police of�icers, staff and members of the public were also interviewed about the 101 initiative. Chief Constable Martin Richards said: “I am delighted that the Home Of�ice and the BBC decided to use Sussex Police to highlight the national launch of 101. “We welcome the introduction of 101 and were involved in the live testing of the number back in July 2011, which enabled any problems with the national system to be addressed. “I recently had to ring 101 myself and was amazed at how clear and

simple the instructions and advice were. “Sussex Police has continually been at the forefront of piloting new ways for the people of Sussex to contact us, whether in person, over the phone or online. “We introduced online crime reporting in January 2011 and it has proven very popular with the public who prefer this method of contacting the police rather than phoning. Worth a Tweet Classrooms across the district and beyond have been turned into bird hides, with binoculars fixed to eyes and noses pressed eagerly against windows. The RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch, from January 16 to 30, is encouraging children and their teachers to learn about the birds that share their school environment. Schools taking part include Upper Beeding Primary School, West Chiltington Community First School, Billingshurst Junior School and St Mary’s Primary School, Pulborough. Don Fuller, RSPB youth and education officer, said: “Wildlife is an unbeatable teaching resource. Colourful, attractive and abundant, it can enthuse and inspire children, connecting them with the nature that lives alongside them every day. “Simple to set up, fun for children to do and offering a host of curriculum-linked learning opportunities across all age ranges, Big Schools’ Birdwatch is something every school should participate in. “Some schools make the activity the centrepiece of a whole week devoted to learning about wild birds, while others hold birdwatch breakfasts or after-school wildlife clubs. Police help club Sussex Police has donated £250 to the Kingsfield Club, Storrington, to help buy equipment for members with dementia. Sally Beckers, who runs the club, said: “This funding is so much appreciated. It will go a long way in helping to buy much-needed equipment for the group and has been met with great joy by all our members and volunteers.” PCSO Carol Boniface said: “The donation comes from the Police Property Act Fund, made up of monies received by the police from property confiscated by order of the court and then sold. “It is great that it can be used to help local communities in this way.”

How has mild winter affected our birds? Residents across Horsham district and beyond will take part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch on January 28-29. And the charity is appealing for more sets of eyes than ever before to help record the fortunes of our garden visitors. Last year, 10,567 people in West Sussex joined more than 600,000 across the UK, spotting the birds in their gardens and helping reveal a recovery for small birds. The results put the house sparrow as West Sussex’s most common bird in 2011, followed by blue tits and starlings. Recent harsh winters have seen some garden bird populations drop, only to make a comeback after a good breeding season the following year.

The results from this year’s survey will show whether the numbers have been maintained or even increased in the relatively mild weather. Samantha Stokes, of the RSPB South East, said: “Because this survey takes place each January, it is always interesting to compare results,

Mike’s marathon bid is a rail challenge Intrepid Mike O’Grady will run consecutive marathons to raise money for a children’s charity. The Southern Railway employee, who works in customer service at Horsham station, is training for the Brighton Marathon on April 15 and the Virgin London Marathon a week later. Mr O’Grady has chosen to run for Rockinghorse, the Brighton-based charity which aims to make life better for sick and disabled babies, children and teenagers across Sussex and

Surrey. He said: “They do this by providing cutting-edge equipment that the NHS cannot cover and by making medical and respite facilities for children and young people as comfortable, friendly and accessible as possible. It is a cause close to his heart. His son had a serious heart condition as a baby but benefited from the intervention of a charity. He added: “My inspiration to challenge myself for charity started in 2010 when I did my first skydive,

followed by running the Brighton Marathon last year and completing the London to Brighton Bike Ride. “I needed a more challenging event, so the back-to-back marathons were born. Sometimes we run for charity, sometimes we run to meet goals we set for ourselves. I’m lucky because I will be doing it for both. “Running two 26.2 miles in seven days is a test. You’re running on guts. On fumes. Your muscles twitch. You’re delirious. But you keep running because there’s no way out of

this hell you’re in, because there’s no way you’re not crossing the finishing line. You might imagine I should be prepared for these weekly submissions. It is not like I am unaware my deadline will roll around again and I will be considering a few hundred words to reflect the moods expressed online, in print and in coffee shops. Writing an article that endeavours to be as up-to-date as online publications is extremely hard, unless you can control the story. Which isn’t to say that slip-ups should be forgiven, but with hindsight many faults of thought or planning could be repaired. I could be lazy, although some would call it being prepared, and have a number of generic pre-written articles into which I might cut and paste the flavour of the week. I hope I never become that person, lest I pass off an article that is at a tangent to the current topic or issue of the week, thus leaving me open to criticism for a lack of understanding. So let’s start with a thought as to what we can expect in Horsham this year. We might be able to predict much of the calendar in terms of events, activities, protests, meetings and plans, and many of these are a repeat of the previous year. Many of these events will set the tone for 2013, just as 2011 decisions are reflected into this year. What can we take away from 2011 in terms of disappointments or resolution? What will arise this year that needs our support and what should we be planning for? It would be easy to assume that someone else will manage and organise things. Many volunteers are responsible for events and activities outside of the published council calendar, proof that we should not solely rely on local government support or grants for things to happen. What can we do this year to halt a shocking headline which will lead to a protest or strongly worded letter? A change of habits might just change the result and the attitude towards change in Horsham, possibly a change we can believe in (I’m pretty sure that statement worked for some other chap). It would be a change of pace if decisions and plans were made which reflected a holistic and connected approach. Too often, shoppers are considered separate entities to shops and business. Businesses are considered as separate to their employees or their own clients. Events occur as if they can be unpacked, inspected and put away until next year. In planning, some thought may be given to the impact – environmental, financial or community – but are they really connecting the dots efficiently? We should be warming up for the end of winter with a clear understanding of differences we demand to see, not just by commenting on Facebook or writing one more letter or email of complaint. If Horsham is going to be here for many more years, it is because this is our town, our council, our community and our Horsham.

Carnival atmosphere as council gets £94k Horsham District Council has secured £94,000 from Arts Council England to develop inclusive, accessible carnival. The Blue Touch Paper project focuses on disabled and non-disabled people coming together to plan, share and make top-quality carnival. This is a partnership project with the West Sussex Arts Partnership and the New Carnival Company on the Isle of Wight. Building on three years’ work piloted and developed by the district council’s community development team, part of the Cultural Olympiad, it will also be part of West Sussex Ahead of the Game 2012.

Horsham stands to gain 4,500 new homes and the amenities to go with them. I can imagine the outrage rippling across the town as news spread. Me? I see it as an opportunity. No matter what can or should be done with empty homes across the land, we face a national housing crisis. New homes must be built to deal with our increasing population. And Horsham is a desirable place to live. It makes sense that people want to come here. We benefit from great schools, low crime rates, green spaces, low housing density and reasonable proximity to our marvellous capital city. So how do we accept the need for housing and make sure it doesn’t ruin the fabric of our town? My suggestion is that rather than using our energy opposing the development, we use it to campaign for the very best, greenest, most sustainable development we can get. New homes should be built to the highest environmental standards. The government’s Guide for Sustainable Homes has nine categories of sustainable design – energy and CO2 emissions, water, materials, surface water run-off, waste, pollution, health and wellbeing, management and ecology. Imagine Horsham as a shining beacon of sustainable building, a guiding light for environmentally friendly development. This is something that would make me proud of our town. Sustainability is the future. Whether you believe in climate change or not, regardless of whether you think human behaviour is to blame, the facts are clear. Traditional sources of energy are running out and getting more expensive all the time, water is becoming increasingly scarce, landfill sites are almost full and our sedentary lifestyles are causing increasing rates of obesity and related illness. The alternative to merely accepting these truths is to look at the options. Homes built from renewable, sustainable materials. Homes that have their own sources of energy and that are insulated against wasting heat. Homes that use rainwater for gardening and toilet flushing and only use pure, clean, highly-treated water where it is needed. Homes surrounded by green spaces where families can access their local environment, be outdoors and exercise. This shouldn’t be beyond the vision or political will of Horsham. Private developers will be implementing the final plans. Sustainability is a growth sector and there are plenty of developers and manufacturers who can fulfil a sustainability brief. So add your voice to mine. Let’s tell the powers that be that we don’t want another faceless development of bogstandard boxes. That we want better for our town, for our future.

Wheel change is possible in Horsham Horsham Cycling Forum has arranged a meeting to discuss how cycling in Horsham can be made safer and more attractive. The forum was formed by the Horsham District Community Partnership to advise West Sussex County Council about possible changes. Speaking on behalf of the partnership, district councillor David Holmes said: “Cycling is important for a wide range of people. “It is a great leisure activity and for others an attractive and affordable way of getting to places. It can help older people keep �it and provide young people with the only way of getting to local facilities or visit friends.

“Despite the current economic situation there are still many things that can be done. Minor changes at road junctions and traf�ic lights, permitting dual use of some footpaths, improved signage, creation of new cycle routes, improved cycle lock-up and kit storage facilities.

“There is also a national trend towards more 20 mph areas which could make the streets safer and

more cycle-friendly. A scheme has been introduced in Portsmouth and 20 mph restrictions are being considered in Worthing and Chichester. “Because of the narrowness of many of our roads, providing cycle lanes of a sensible width is impossible. Wider cycle lanes might be feasible if some roads became one-way. “Changes in legislation are going to take many decisions about our roads away from West Sussex County Council in Chichester and allow policy to be decided by local county councillors. “New rules about how money from developers is spent will

provide access to money not previously available. If the district’s cyclists can decide on the changes they wish to see, there may be the opportunity for some of these objectives to be achieved. “If you wish to see improvements so that cycling is safer for you or your children, come along to the meeting and let us hear your thoughts. The cycling community needs to agree on its objectives and will need support if improvements are to be made.” The meeting will take place in the council chamber at Horsham District Council, Park North, North Street, from 7pm on Tuesday, January 31.

Winter advice West Sussex County Council is reminding people how they can prepare and cope with cold winter weather. Social care cash boost An extra £2,032,426 for social care in West Sussex will mean people can leave hospital earlier and receive better care at home. That is the view of county councillor Bob Smytherman, Liberal Democrat adult services spokesman, who told The Resident: “It is of particular importance to do everything we can to ensure people are cared for at home in a safe and familiar environment. “Nationally the coalition is already doing the right thing and providing an extra £7.2 billion in social care funding over the next four years. “This extra cash for West Sussex further shows how the Liberal Democrats recognise that we all prefer to be out of hospital, receiving care in

our own home. “By reinvesting these savings in social care we can offer more help and support to older people leaving hospital. “It is absolutely crucial that the NHS and the county council work together to help people leave hospital when they are ready. “The bene�its are on all sides – patients get to go home with the support they and their families need and hospital beds are freed up. “This money will help cut the delays in getting the equipment and adaptations that people can need to enable them to live independently at home, saving them from an unnecessary stay in hospital or going into residential care.”

She will start work for the council in March after joining from the London Borough of Croydon, where she is head of �inance for children’s services.

Fracking hell? One of the MEPs for Horsham district says gas company Cuadrilla should stop its fracking operations in Sussex until safety issues are resolved. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a process whereby holes drilled into reservoir rock layers beneath the ground are filled with pressurised fluid which creates cracks, veins or dykes allowing gas to be extracted. Fracking done by Cuadrilla in Lancashire last year caused two earthquakes. Now the company has permission to drill a site near Balcombe. Liberal Democrat Sharon Bowles, MEP for the South East, said: “Reports in the US, from places where fracking has been permitted, show damage has been done to the environment, with a measurable increase in air and water pollution. “It has also been reported that some households in the US are able to set fire to their tap water as a result of fracking and this is not something we want to see in Sussex. “A moratorium on hydraulic fracturing has already been declared in France and Switzerland. Given the evident dangers, I am supporting those in Sussex and across the South East who do not want fracking while there are questions about health and other safety aspects.”

The youth support team (YST) at Horsham District Council could soon move into other areas of the district. The YST aims to engage and support young people where they meet while also promoting healthy and informed choices on issues such as alcohol, drugs, sexual health, exercise and healthy eating. Since it started supporting young people in Horsham Park on Friday evenings during the spring and summer, there have been fewer incidents in the park relating to antisocial behaviour perceived to be caused by youngsters. The YST’s partners include West Sussex County Council, Horsham District Community Safety Partnership, Horsham Matters Ltd and the Anglican Diocese of Chichester. I read with interest Andrew Edmondson’s diatribe on behalf of West Sussex Humanists (The Resident, January 13). I came away with the clear impression that if it were possible to do away with Christianity, all would be well – a new world order based upon individual freedom and happiness. But with its myths, stories and doctrines, Christianity has shaped our culture – the way we think and act. If we were able to get rid of it, I suggest we could end up with something far, far worse. Before the Berlin Wall came down, I had the opportunity of visiting the then German Democratic Republic on a fairly regular basis. At that time, the so-called GDR was perhaps one of the most despotic regimes in Europe. If a youngster did not join the official Communist youth movement – the Free German Youth – the chances of obtaining a decent education were remote.

And to declare oneself a Christian was to invite persecution from the state, in the form of the Ministry of State Security (aka the Stasi). This is not to suggest that West Sussex Humanists seek to penalise committed Christians in such a draconian manner. But I suspect they would seek to encourage abortion on demand, euthanasia with little compassion for those born severely disabled, on the basis that quality of life was all that mattered. The symbol of the British Humanist Association is the Happy Man, supposedly free from the constraints of mindless religious superstition. While I do not doubt their integrity, I do feel their aggressive approach to Christian values is misplaced and lacks generosity of spirit. Ofsted want to toughen the language of inspections in England, changing the “satisfactory” rating to “requires improvement”. Ofsted are notorious for their violence towards the English language and towards education in general. By sleight of hand, they change “satisfactory” to “unsatisfactory”. They label schools as “failing” in order to create a self-fulfilling prophecy. Who would want to send their children to a “failing” school? Or teach at one? And the not-so-hidden agenda? Christine Blower, NUT general secretary, bluntly pointed out: “The government’s real agenda behind this change is of course inventing yet another category of schools that it will then seek to force into academy status.” In a welcome move, the NASUWT echoed the NUT’s concern: “The seemingly tough talk we have heard from the government may have popular appeal, but the reality is it has nothing to do with raising

standards. “It is about ratcheting up pressure on schools, without providing the support and resources they need to assist them in securing further improvements. “This announcement will encourage a culture of vicious management practices within schools which will have a profoundly negative effect on the workforce and children and young people alike.” Nothing illustrates (Education Secretary Michael) Gove’s hypocrisy more clearly than his dodgy “free school” project. For all his blather about raising standards, free schools like the proposed one in Southwater are not required to have qualified teachers. So any Tom, Dick or Harriet off the street can come and teach our children on the cheap. The private schools, where the millionaires in the government send their children, are staffed by professionals. If Gove gets his way, they will be the only schools that are! After 94 years of trading, Hoads of Horsham is to close in March. The furniture store’s owner, Nick Rees, has claimed that as well as a “depressing” economic climate, the rise in purchases made on the internet has affected his sales, and it’s a trend that has been seen on a national scale. The website retaileconomics.co.uk reported that almost 28 million adults in the UK used the internet to purchase goods and services between October and December 2011 - 55% of the adult population. Sellerphere.ebay.co.uk also reported that internet sales were up 19% during the �irst half of 2011 compared with the same period in 2010. Meanwhile the Guardian.co.uk stated British shoppers spent £31.5 billion online during the same period last year. Sarah Lidstone is the owner of Cape Scarlett clothing store in Horsham. The businesswoman has seen a rise in online sales on her own website, but also believes that people still like to touch and feel the products she sells.

Sarah said: “Often you can’t tell exactly what something will be like when you buy it online, especially when it comes to clothes that you need to try on. So for that reason, many shops are safe. “Having a physical place to sell products also comes in handy for last minute and hassle free purchases, especially if you want something for your Saturday night out. Plus, you know when something is right if you see it in a shop, so you don’t have to bother posting it back.” That may be why Sarah has seen a 60% rise in users of Cape Scarlett’s website since it opened. The combination of the two could be the reason why the business is going strong, two years after its launch. Sarah added: “You have to make an effort with your shop. I have worked hard to create a welcoming and beautifully laid out store. It makes it a nice environment for women to come in with friends, which is obviously good for business.” “I’ve also made sure that I am selling what people want. My products are a little bit different and I have a mixture of high street and designer clothes.” But sometimes, good quality products and a web presence are not enough, as Hoads of Horsham has discovered. The company, which sells home furnishings and accessories, has found that a rise in online commerce has meant stiff competition when it comes to pricing. Owner Nick Rees said: “Although the direct impact of the internet on our sales is not heavy, people do tend to use us as a library. They will come in, look around to �ind out what they like, then go and �ind the same product or something similar online. It’s often a mistake because you can’t return something easily and you don’t get the expertise of a sales person to advise you. “If people supported local businesses instead of the internet, we’d be better off. We just need to get that message out there”. Hoads has its own website on which customers can view a catalogue of products. It was visited 235,000 times in 2011. The company also operates

an additional site called Quirkygifts – an online ordering site for home accessories and gifts which received 480,000 hits in just nine months.” For Christopher Skelton at Mapp and Company, a Horsham estate agency, the internet has its place for local businesses, especially if you make it work for you. He said: “The internet enhances our business. People will browse properties and then come in and see us. We know the importance of the internet and have just launched a new website. But ultimately it’s used to drive people to our of�ice. “There are other bene�its too. Websites can be used to link with Facebook and other social media. It all helps generate traf�ic to our actual business. Because ultimately, clients prefer to talk face to face.” The internet is here to stay. Perhaps the best way to make it work for your business is to embrace it and �ind a way to use it to your advantage. Those local businesses that survive the rise in e-commerce will be those that adapt to changing consumer habits. Today’s audience and customers want access to products 24/7 with a personal service to boot. Local businesses that thrive will be those that get the balance just right.

Vintage fare on show at new wedding event A new wedding fair with a vintage theme will take place in Horsham on Sunday, January 29. The event will provide a showcase for a range of high quality products and services for the bride and groom and will be held at Restaurant Tristan, on East Street in Horsham. The concept of the event was created by Alice Bradley, who said: “There are lots of great companies in the area that are offering something really unique and interesting for weddings. “Having a vintage-style wedding is perfect for this area, because there are so many beautiful and historic venues around. “I’m really pleased we’ve found a venue like Tristan’s, which can also host small weddings, to hold this event. One of the breakout stars of 2011, Emeli Sande, rocked up to a performance by local singer Alice Ella recently and surprised the budding star with a duet. Alice was performing ‘Heaven’, a song that was originally performed and co-written by Sande, when the star showed up and sang along. Alice said: “I was invited to the Bloomsbury Bowling lanes which is also a nightclub, to do a piece to camera about how big a fan of Emeli’s I am and to sing a bit of ‘Heaven’ for them to use as there online campaign. “The room was full of cameras, a crew and producers and they asked me to sing – I was oblivious to what was about to happen! “During the chorus I suddenly heard a loud voice also singing. I live in a Rental property and recently there have been numerous letters arriving addressed to my Landlord and I am concerned that he is in financial difficulty. If this is the case where do I stand? I’m concerned because I know there is a mortgage on the property. If your Landlord has been made Bankrupt or is in Receivership, Trustees or Receivers will have been appointed to deal with his assets and undertakings. If the property is managed by an agent then they will continue to act as Agent for the Receiver or Trustee, therefore the current terms of your Tenancy Agreement would not change. All that would differ is the name and address of the Landlord and a notice would be served on you confirming the amended details. The terms and conditions contained within your Tenancy Agreement would remain the same and rent should continue to be paid as previously. Provided the agent is member of the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) or similar then all monies would be protected by their bonding scheme. Your deposit monies would continue to be held and protected (if an Assured Shorthold Tenancy) in accordance with the terms of the Tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme and the Tenancy Agreement. If your Landlord has arrears with his mortgage and the property is being re-possessed the first thing to ascertain is if the property has been let out with the mortgagees consent as this will affect your position; The Mortgage Repossessions (Protection of Tenants etc) Act 2010 ; Tenancy without Mortgagee’s consent – with effect from 01.10.2010 the Act allows for tenants whose tenancies were not authorised by a mortgage lender to request a two month stay on an order for possession or the execution of a warrant for possession by the mortgagee. If the mortgagee will not grant such a stay in writing then the tenant has the power to apply to the Court for the same stay. The Court is not obliged to grant the stay and will consider the circumstances of each case and, in particular, will look at the conduct of the tenant and any breaches of the tenancy agreement committed by the Tenant. The Court can also require the tenant to pay the rent direct to the mortgagee during the period of the stay. Tenancy with Mortgagee’s consent – If consent was given to the Tenancy the mortgagee will generally appoint a Receiver to act on their behalf and collect the rent for the remainder of the Tenancy term.

Looking ahead at Horsham’s lettings market The lettings market during 2011 was characterised by exceptionally high demand for accommodation with many tenants having to compete for a limited supply of properties. This led to rising rents, attractive yields and greater con�idence in the market for landlords. Looking ahead into 2012, Horsham’s leading letting specialist, Leaders, predicts the market will be similar in terms of strong demand, but that property stocks will begin to improve as investors turn to the Private Rental Sector (PRS) as a viable alternative to the volatile stock market and low interest rates. Says Leader’s senior branch manager, Kathy Taylor: “We are seeing a steady number of enquiries from buy to let landlords seeking our advice at the initial stage of purchasing which suggests that investment in the PRS will increase. In addition to new investment, we expect more rental properties to come onto the market from people giving up on the sales market, and from people who inherit property choosing to let rather than sell. We are also seeing some long-term tenants

moving out of the sector once they have saved a deposit to buy their own homes which is freeing up accommodation for new tenants. “This will be good for renters as it will facilitate more movement for those relying on the PRS over the medium to long-term. Many couples and families need to move up the rental ladder to larger properties which will ensure continued demand across all property types.” Leaders report that two and three bedroom houses are particularly sought after, with premium rents being achieved for those that are well located and presented to a high standard. “We had a very busy 2011 and the market here remains healthy for investment landlords. Many of our landlords saw their rental income increase signi�icantly last year and we will continue to review rents throughout 2012. It is crucial that rents re�lect these cost-conscious times; if a property is priced too high it will not let. An independent expert is key to valuing the property to ensure the best possible rent is achieved without risking costly void periods.” Whilst market conditions will remain positive for landlords and look set to improve for tenants during 2012, Leaders issues a warning about the continued lack of legislation in the industry. Says Kathy: “2011 saw the

government con�irming that it has no plans to regulate letting agents, a decision we were very disappointed by. At a time when more people than ever are turning to this sector, landlords and tenants need protection from unscrupulous and incompetent letting agents. Many are unaware that there is no proper regulation governing letting agents, despite the plethora of legislation that applies to letting itself. If letting agents do not know and comply with the regulations, properties can be unsafe, client money can be at risk and the landlord’s and tenant’s interests unprotected during the tenancy. Landlords should be aware that they can be held liable for their agent’s actions or inactions and can face severe penalties including hefty �ines and even imprisonment. With formal regulation of letting agents unlikely, Leader’s advice to landlords and tenants is simple: only use an agent with many years experience, a good reputation and above all, that is a member of a professional body such as ARLA, NAEA or RICS. These organisations are self-regulating and ensure that member agents comply with a rigorous code of conduct and that clients’ money is held in separate, properly protected accounts. Hugo Langton offered no excuses for Horsham’s defeat at Harrow Borough, with the hosts’ sharpness in the �inal third proving the difference between the two sides. The Hornets have failed to win at Harrow in more than four decades. Langton said the striker had found it a struggle getting to training and matches from his north London home, so it had been agreed to allow him to seek a club nearer home. The boss added: “I would like to place on record my thanks to Seny for agreeing to help us out. “When I became manager, we needed a player like him. Although it was only ever a short-term agreement, he’s stuck with it and done a fantastic job for us. “I know the fans might be disappointed, but I think the decision is the right one under the circumstances and I wish Seny all the best of luck.”

I couldn’t be much further removed from my beloved Albion in the French Alps, but here I am, up at over 2,000m in Les Arcs. Saturday’s win over Bristol City feels like it happened in a different world, not just six days ago. What a fantastic goal by Inigo Calderon and one that was very much overdue after his goalscoring exploits of last season. More of the same please, Calde. And what about Craig MackailSmith’s black eye? It looked like he had gone 12 rounds with Mike Tyson. Having booked my ski holiday way in advance of the football �ixtures being released in the summer, I was a bit disappointed when I realised I would be missing the game at Peterborough tomorrow (Saturday). With its low roof and terracing in the away end, London Road has been a favourite ground of mine since an FA Cup tie there many years ago. Oh well, one can’t have it all. Following a 24-hour postponement because of a touch of frost in north Wales, Wednesday evening saw our FA Cup replay at Wrexham. After all the messing about by the TV companies over when the game was to be played, it did make me chuckle when it was still shown live even after the postponement. I just wish it had been shown on French TV. Or maybe not, from what I have heard. At least I had the internet to keep me abreast of developments. With the chance to host Newcastle United in the next round, from the reports I read it would appear that the Wrexham players wanted it more than Albion’s. Wrexham scored �irst before Ashley Barnes equalised and as neither side managed to score a winner in either normal or extra time I was left watching a Twitter feed as the penalties were taken. A win’s a win, even if it did take penalties. Well done to all �ive Albion players who stepped forward and scored to take us through to the fourth round and a fantastic game against Premier League opponents. Fair play to all the Albion fans, including several NWSS members, who made the trip to Wrexham on Wednesday. Or Tuesday. It couldn’t have been easy, but I bet it was well worth it as Mackail-Smith slotted home the �ifth penalty. Good luck to Albion tomorrow. I wish I could be there. Horsham’s Achilles heel was defending in their 22 and Heathfield secured a bonus point with two further tries, including a neat switch from a penalty. George Palmer scored the final try, but the Green and Whites could not break clear in their attempt to overhaul the narrow deficit.

Two goals in two minutes helped Division A leaders Horsham U15 win 4-2 at Bosham U15 in the Arun and Chichester Youth League. Aaron Pyzer fired the young Hornets in front with a shot from the edge of the area, but Bosham equalised with a soft goal just before half time and went in front with 20 minutes left. Horsham responded to their

second setback almost immediately. Tricky and nippy striker Callum Nash cut into the area from the right and laid a perfect pass for Will Kerr to crash in off a post. Horsham retook the lead when Jack Norris’ cross was only half cleared and Nash pounced to tuck away the loose ball. It was almost all one-way traffic after that and the impressive Alex Moore completed the scoring after being played in by Nash.

Horsham U16 suffered a very rare defeat, 3-0 at Hove Rivervale U16 in their County Cup quarter-final. Southwater Red U18 overcame high-flying Felpham Colts U18 3-2 to reach the final of the Arun and Chichester Youth League Cup. Ryan Thomas converted Griffin Shiel’s cross, Adam Laker finished neatly as his pace got him to Zack Haulkham’s through ball and Haulkham fired home a 30-yard free kick. City U18 in the final. Chesworth Rovers U11 won 6-0 at Crawley United U11 in Division A of the Horsham and District Youth League. Goals by Harry Bryant (two), Josh Baker (two), Jack Frankland and Benjy Collins helped Rovers maintain their 100 per cent record after a sixweek break. Roffey Robins Rockets U9 won 4-1 and 1-0 against Crawley Panthers U9, despite playing the second match with only six players against seven.

Atlantis split into two at the weekend to tackle open meets in Brighton and Portsmouth. Brighton Swimming Club hosted the traditional Tom Handley Meet, designed specifically for swimmers aiming for qualifying times for the fast-approaching Sussex County Championships. The meet also gives swimmers the chance to test each other’s speed and fitness in the highly exciting “skins” race. The fastest six swimmers from the heats compete against each other over 50m, with the slowest swimmer eliminated from the succeeding round. After a short rest, the remaining five go again until they are whittled down to a final two. The excitement grows as the elimination process goes on, and with Beth Britton still in the hunt the Atlantis team were all behind her. Britton made the final comfortably and Atlantis head coach Bill Penny was confident his swimmer could control the final race. He was right, as swimming a superb final length she lengthened her lead to grab the prize money. The final summed up a great weekend of top-quality swimming by the Atlantis team, with many achieving their personal goals. Delighted coach Matt Cumber said: “We have had a hard weekend of racing and the swimmers have once again shown their fighting spirit. “With the likes of 11-year-old Lauren Pedel gaining regional times, let alone county times, we are really satisfied. Congratulations to all our qualifiers from the weekend.” Along the south coast in Portsmouth, six of the club’s senior swimmers were in action at the Mountbatten Centre, home to one of the best 50m pools in the country. The swimmers are all in a strong training programme ahead of the ASA Southern Zonal Championships. Having already secured two national qualifying times, Cameron Lambourne was in good form as he repeated this achievement in both the 50m and 100m freestyle. Lambourne is targeting the British Championships in April in the Olympic Pool and came agonisingly close in the 50m free, just missing out on a qualifying time. Bex Lobley was also in a confident mood as she swam two seconds under the national qualifying time in the 200m breast, an event for which she had already qualified. Sunday afternoon saw the 100m breast. Lobley was pipped into second place in a great race, but the disappointment turned to joy when she realised she had achieved her second national time of the season. Jade Stocker and Kate Windle both came within two seconds of achieving national times. Penny said: “I’m very happy with all the performances down at Portsmouth. “Cam and Bex are both getting good results and I’m very confident that a string of swimmers will be joining them.”

But it would have been difficult to predict the final score based on the first 10 minutes, as the game started very tightly with neither team giving anything away. Seriously depleted Horsham won 5-2 at Worthing, a team they have sometimes struggled to beat. With shoulder and groin injuries preventing outstanding keeper Ed Heathcock and Andy MacWraith from playing, and Ed Jackson (work) and Jamie Whitehouse (study) also unavailable, Horsham had seven 16-yearolds on the pitch at one point. Coach Sam Naismith said: “I’m absolutely delighted. This was a real team effort. To field such a young side and come away with three points was a brilliant result. “Playing his first league match at the age of 16, keeper Sam Percival was outstanding and even managed to set up a Horsham goal straight from one of his saves. Of the seniors, Dom Cohen had an excellent game.” Horsham won in style and were 4-0 up at half time. Nathan Hill, Duncan Howarth and John Burroughs scored one each, while the prolific Matt Hough was unluckily denied a hat-trick.

What should have been his third goal was hit so strongly that it burst through the netting, creating the impression it had not been on target. Despite this emphatic win, Horsham slipped from third to fourth place on goal difference as Folkestone thrashed Sevenoaks 10-1. Tomorrow (Saturday), Horsham return to Broadbridge Heath for a home fixture against Bexleyheath and Belvedere, one place below them. Horsham Ladies started 2012 in great style, winning the National South Division 2 weekend indoor tournament at Whitgift School. Led by goalkeeper Hannah Simpson, Horsham dominated the tournament, scoring 21 goals and conceding just six. They beat Barnes 5-0, St Albans 4-2, Maidstone 4-0, Old Loughtonians 4-2 and Surbiton 4-2. Coach Warren Gilmour said: “I couldn’t have asked for a better team performance. They were outstanding.” Horsham Ladies will contest the National League indoor tournament in Birmingham this weekend before resuming their league campaign on February 5.
