‘Mushroom plan stinks’ For over 125 years, Thakeham has been the district’s centre of smell, the palace of pong, the station of stench, the whereabouts of whiff. That’s all been down to its dominant mushroom farm, which employs nearly 500 people. The potent odour that often spreads to surrounding villages could soon all but disappear, thanks to improvements planned by Sussex Mushrooms. There’s a problem though - the work will be funded by selling one of the company’s two sites for major housing development.
