Councillors have voted to increase car parking charges by an average of 20 per cent, despite fears that the changes will hit hard-pressed businesses.

At a full council meeting on Wednesday evening, Horsham District Council supported fee rises designed to cut the council’s net budget while improving the quality of car parks in the town.

But Liberal Democrat councillor Frances Haigh, who represents Horsham Park ward, told the meeting: “Our competition comes from the supermarkets where parking is free and from the internet which is available 24/7.

“Residents have commented on Facebook that these increased prices mean they will shop at the supermarkets instead.

“Nationally we are in the midst of the worst recession for 30 years. Some of our town traders are hanging on by a thread.

They need us to be providing policies that support them.

“Arun District Council has introduced a one-year trial offering free parking for two hours in Bognor Regis. Why can we not do that here on one day midweek to encourage people into the town?

“We have before us one of the worst documents I have seen in this council, rushed through, almost bypassing the committee and consultation stages.

“If you took this plan to any business analyst, they would throw it out. Many of

us here have business backgrounds and we should be throwing it out.”

Cllr Andrew Baldwin (Con, Holbrook East) expressed irritation with some of the arguments put forward by Lib Dem councillors.

He told them: “I really don’t think it is half the problem you’re making it out to be. I don’t think putting up parking charges a little bit will make a blind bit of difference.

“You can’t compare Bognor Regis to Horsham. It’s like comparing a clapped out old banger to a Rolls Royce. Bognor Regis is a dump.

“What is proposed is perfectly reasonable and the majority of people will support it.”

The council will allocate £130,000 of the expected extra income to fund new parking machines, car park cleaning, lighting improvements and a parking customer survey.

Cllr Roger Paterson (Con, Pulborough and Coldwaltham) said: “We have to ensure we provide a markedly superior experience for visitors.

We need a bright, interesting and exciting environment.

“The nub of the concerns is that we will drive shoppers away if we put up our prices. There is no clear evidence that this is the case.

“Surveys show price is not a consideration for shoppers coming into the town. You would expect that if you put the price up by a jump you would have a drop in the number of shoppers, but the statistics show that

is not the case.

“Our peers (other towns) have pressed ahead with increasing car parking prices much faster than we have. What we are proposing is simply to bring us up to the lowest level.”

Cllr Leonard Crosbie (Lib Dem, Trafalgar) said: “It’s a long time since I’ve heard the argument, ‘keep putting up prices and you’ll get no impact on demand’.

“Look at Worthing. They’ve killed Worthing by their level of charges.

They’ve cleaned out just about every small business there.”

From April, car park charges will increase: • At Swan Walk from £1.60 to £2 for

up to two hours, £2.40 to £3 (three hours), £3.20 to £4 (four), £4 to £5 (five), £4.80 to £6 (six) and £6.40 to £7 (eight). More than eight hours will stay at £10.

• At Hurst Road from £1 to £1.50 (two hours), £1 to £2 (three) and £2 to £3 (four). Up to five hours will stay at £4.

• At Piries Place by between 20p and 80p, at Denne Road by 20p-60p, at the council’s offices by 20p-60p and at other car parks by 10p-20p.

• By five to eight per cent for most five-day and quarterly tickets, for example adding £15.10 to a quarterly ticket at Swan Walk.

Chris Evans comes to Rudgwick

A driver allegedly ploughed his car into a cyclist on purpose.

A 24-year old local man says he was pushing his bike up a hill near Tanbridge House School when he noticed a silver jeep-type vehicle on the footpath.

When he asked the driver to move it from the path, the car was driven onto the Farthings Hill roundabout.

But the cyclist rode onto the cycle path across the roundabout and noticed car headlights coming towards him.

He mounted the grass verge and stood on the pedals, ready to jump from his bike, but the front driver’s side of the car knocked him off the bike.

The car continued back to Horsham on the A281 or towards the A24 to Southwater.

The driver is white and of a large build. He was clean shaven, had short cropped brown hair and wore a grey or white hoody.

The front seat passenger, also white, was clean shaven and had long black hair combed to one side. There was a white passenger in the back.

The incident happened at about 10.15pm on Wednesday last week, October 12, but Sussex Police only released the details this week.

TV presenter and radio DJ Chris Evans opened the IT suite at Rudgwick Primary School.

He said: “I know Rudgwick and the surrounding area pretty well, so it’s lovely to be here. The kids are great and I’ve had a blast. We weren’t expecting this kind of reception!”

Pudsey Bear, the BBC Children in Need mascot, will visit the Carfax on Sunday, November 6 (2pm).

Horsham District Council and Horsham Rotary Club are inviting as many mascots and life-sized characters as possible to accompany Pudsey – and some of them got into the spirit at the bandstand yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.

Garry Mortimer-Cook, town centres manager at the district council, said: “A number of local primary schools are getting involved and it is hoped that many local children and their parents will be attracted to Horsham on the day.

“Initial feedback from schools indicates this will be a hugely popular event – weather permitting!”

Dave Benson Phillips, the BBC children’s TV celebrity, is already confirmed to MC the event and lead song and dance activities.

Teacher struck off register for inappropriate behaviour Matthew James News Editor

A former teacher at Tanbridge House School has been struck off the teaching register after taking a Year 11 pupil, known as Pupil C, for a meal.

The General Teaching Council (GTC) made its decision after hearing that Darren Gandley provided false information to a colleague who had seen him with Pupil C at a restaurant in June 2006.

Mr Gandley, who taught at Tanbridge House between March 2004 and December 2006, also faced allegations about his behaviour while employed by Reading School from 1998 to 2003.

Some of the Reading allegations were found not proven, but the GTC concluded he met Pupil A outside school when they both drank alcohol and smoked cigarettes, invited Pupil A to his bedroom to discuss the pupil’s sexuality, and invited Pupil A and Pupil B to watch films alone.

The GTC also concluded that Mr

Gandley took Pupil A for a meal, slept with him and offered to perform a sexual act.

A report by the GTC says he “failed to put the wellbeing, development and progress of children and young people first”.

It says: “Mr Gandley had, somewhat unusually, specifically been required to agree to a condition that he maintain a professional distance with students both within and outside school (Tanbridge House).

“Mr Gandley’s conduct fell short of the standard expected of a registered teacher and was behaviour which involved a breach of the standards of propriety expected of the profession.

“Taken individually, some of the allegations might not in themselves have constituted unacceptable professional conduct.

“Cumulatively they were a course of conduct that was unacceptable and showed a repeated disregard for maintaining the proper boundaries between a teacher and pupils.

“This was particularly so given the vulnerability of the pupils involved who were seeking to come to terms with their sexuality and the issues

arising from that.

“It is clear that those allegations that relate to Pupils A’s overnight stay in Mr Gandley’s bedroom were completely unacceptable in themselves.

“Further, that the allegations arise in the context of repeated warnings about Mr Gandley’s behaviour and over the course of two teaching posts show a complete disregard for maintaining an acceptable standard of behaviour.

He did not have the ‘best interests of the pupils at heart ’

“We have found a multiplicity of failings on the part of Mr Gandley, some of which constituted a gross breach of his position of trust. These took place over a considerable period of time and despite Mr Gandley receiving repeated warnings and guidance about his behaviour.

“In response to each incident, Mr

Gandley showed a lack of insight into their seriousness which is further demonstrated by his failure to learn from his past behaviour and his unwillingness or inability to change his behaviour in relation to staff-student interaction.

“This is reflected in his lack of engagement with these proceedings and his failure to make any expression of remorse or provide any references that we might consider.

“Mr Gandley has contended that he was seeking to help young people who were experiencing difficulties in relation to their sexuality.

“Even if that was his aim he approached the matter in a completely unacceptable fashion and without any regard for the potential risks which were clearly set out in the schools’ policies and procedures.

“He had no formal pastoral role and failed to consult with or inform his colleagues of his actions.

“Therefore the inevitable conclusion to draw from his behaviour is that he did not have the best interests of the pupils at heart and his relationships with pupils quickly developed a wholly unacceptable intimacy.”

Service recognised Former councillor Cliff Griffin has been made an honorary freeman by Billingshurst Parish Council.

Mr Griffin served on the parish or district council for more than 50 years, at times both together, before losing his parish seat in May. Cllr Paul Berry, chairman of Billingshurst Parish Council, said: “After the election in May, councillors started talking about how they could commemorate Mr Griffin’s service to the community.

“The council found out it has the power to bestow the title of honorary freeman to persons of distinction and those who have rendered eminent services. We thought what better candidate than Cliff.”

Although the title does not grant Mr Griffin any powers, it gives the council a chance to acknowledge his commitment and hard work.

Postmen targeted A car passenger dragged a postman off a bike in Kings Road, Horsham, and tried to do the same to another postie in what police have branded “mindless and potentially dangerous incidents”.

The car was a very dark blue, older-style Volkswagen Golf, which may have been driven off towards Harwood Road.

The front passenger was a muscular-looking white man in his mid20s. He had short fair hair, wore a light-coloured T-shirt and was heard laughing.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “These individuals clearly disregard the potential danger – a collision by lack of concentration or the cyclist falling and going under the vehicle.”

The two incidents happened about 100m apart at 1.55pm on Friday last week, October 14.

‘Slow down’ campaign speeds up Becky Freeth Junior Reporter

A Facebook campaign to stop speeding traffic in Southwater is gathering pace with the backing of police, schools and the Southwater Action Team (SWAT).

Campaign founder Janine Rice, 31, launched Slow Down for Southwater after witnessing a 12-year-old boy being struck by a car outside her home in College Road in March.

The mother of four said: “It was frightening. The next day I found myself pacing, I couldn’t relax. I was just thinking, what can I do?”

Although the car was within the 30 mph speed limit, campaigners want drivers to slow down and are aiming to increase the awareness of road users in Southwater.

SWAT has called for the introduction of speed indicator devices (SID), with the help of police community support officers (PCSOs). These devices would display the speed of passing vehicles to deter speeding, not to identify drivers.

SWAT secretary Caroline Bosdet said: “The PCSOs are supportive of reinvigorating this volunteer initiative and SWAT are in discussion with them to get this going again. It requires volunteers to be trained and a rota of volunteers to sustain it.”

Mrs Rice said: “SWAT have been wonderful and are behind me 100 per cent. I think this is exactly what we needed to do.”

The winning poster, by a Southwater Junior School pupil, will be displayed along with stickers and banners on noticeboards around the village.

Critical condition A cyclist was still in a critical condition this week after being involved in a collision with a car in Horsham.

The collision with an Audi happened in Blackbridge Lane, at the junction with Hengist Close, shortly after 6pm on September 29.

The cyclist, a 36-year old local man, sustained head and leg injuries and was taken by air ambulance to St George’s Hospital, Tooting.

The car driver, a 41-year-old local man, was unhurt.

Chairman’s suicide The chairman of a school’s governors hanged himself after suffering from a jaw injury sustained while playing football in his childhood.

Richard Sweet was found dead in the garage of his home at Mallard Way, Henfield, in February 2010 – nine days before what would have been his 52nd birthday.

The retired IT consultant, who was chairman of governors at St Peter’s Primary School, Henfield, had been a Scout leader and involved with a theatre company in Brighton.

At Horsham Magistrates’ Court, coroner Christopher Wilkinson recorded a verdict that Mr Sweet took his own life.

Bus campaigners hoping for an early Christmas present The future of under-threat bus services will be decided on December 16.

That is when West Sussex County Council will discuss whether to axe its subsidies for dozens of routes as part of the council’s cost-cutting measures.

The 86 service was one of more than 60 highlighted by The Resident in May as being recommended for removal in September or October.

Almost half of the services originally listed – including the 86 – have been spared the axe until at least April next year, but their fate after that is still uncertain.

District councillor Andrew Dunlop this week chaired what he described as a “useful” meeting at Cowfold Village Hall, attended by Cowfold Parish Council chairman Vic Allmond, West Grinstead Parish Council chairman David Green, 86 bus campaigners Caroline Collins and Dawn Jelley, and three key officers from the county council.

Cllr Dunlop, Conservative councillor for Cowfold, Shermanbury and West Grinstead, told The Resident: “The meeting was not principally to discuss the case for retaining the 86 bus. No final decisions on this will be made until December 16.

“Recommendations will go from the select committee to the Cabinet member responsible for transport, Cllr Pieter Montyn, in late November.

“In the intervening period, the Cowfold community will continue to make the case for retention of the 86 bus and to convey the impact of Caroline and Dawn’s ‘Use it or lose it’ campaign to stimulate demand.

“The meeting focused on what other measures could be put in place should a decision be taken to withdraw the 86.

“There was general agreement that it was unlikely in this situation there would be a ‘one size fits all’ solution.

“If this looks viable, West Sussex County Council would use their knowledge and expertise to assist the community to run an informal tendering process to ensure, as a minimum, an alternative for school and college users.

“Clearly, for the local community retaining the 86 bus remains the priority. If this cannot be achieved then we need to identify alternatives that work for the residents of our villages and ensure these are in place by next April.

Mrs Collins, who described the meeting as “positive”, said she was relieved to see the county council was finally “making good its promise to talk to bus operators and residents”.

Campaigners handed out leaflets publicising a public meeting in the Friary Hall, Crawley, on October 29 (7.30pm).

Mrs Loates, the district’s Poppy Appeal organiser, told The Resident: “It seems the Poppy Donation Station, so popular over the last two years, will not appear in Horsham town centre unless some kind letting agent or owner can give us some space.

“The Poppy Appeal is a registered charity. We don’t sell anything, we just ask for donations for your poppies, poppy pins, wristbands, wreaths and crosses.

“Last year, Horsham district kindly donated over £32,000 to the appeal.

It would be a shame not to be able to continue raising this money, which is much needed by our Armed Forces and their families.”

What a play day Sussex Police presented a cheque for £350 to Warnham Pre-School Playgroup.

The donation came from the Police Property Act Fund, money from property sold after being confiscated by courts.

It’s such a shame that the council still compare Horsham to Crawley, Brighton and Chichester when it comes to parking charges.

Being a much bigger town or city, these places have much more to them than our beautiful little town.

Yet Crawley has a free car park, bigger than the Swan Walk car park, just five minutes from the town centre. Brighton Marina has a huge free car park.

Horsham has a pig-headed council who haven’t a clue what they’re doing while sitting in their cosy offices with their cars parked for free just outside.

At this exact moment I bet you can drive from the Bishopric, up Albion Way towards Royal Sun Alliance, and see on the parking display boards that there are hundreds of empty spaces.

This is the case most of the time, Monday to Friday, nearly every week.

Years ago, I pointed this out to the council and asked why we needed park and ride when it cost the ratepayers so much.

The reply, and I promise this is true: “We need those spaces (in the car parks) for the busy periods, like Christmas!”

The morons now want to increase the cost to the public more!

How about reducing the cost in the week and seeing the number of spaces available drop.

They could even close the park and ride and just use it at Christmas to save tens of thousands.

Everyone wins, except the Tories who had the park and ride idea in the first place. Scared of egg on their faces?

More people park, but pay less, might not just see revenue stay the same. It might actually increase, especially if publicised properly.

We have a very small number of empty shops compared to the national average, while Crawley has a much higher percentage of empty shops.

To increase parking charges while taking in all the above factors proves our council is incompetent and not fit to serve.

As someone who has been involved in the campaign to save the Old Town Hall, and as the person who tried to set up a town council, this has been apparent for some time. Indeed for far too long.

Many car parking charges in Horsham – including most at Swan Walk – are set to rise by 25 per cent and others by as much as 50 per cent.

But the district council’s leader has dismissed suggestions that the increases will hit hard-pressed traders by putting off potential visitors to the town.

Cllr Robert Nye told The Resident: “All of the surveys very clearly show that the public are not focused on the actual cost of parking, unless it is exceptional in relation to the surrounding towns.

“People are looking for good-quality parking, easy to access without driving around trying to find a space. That’s far more important than the increase in prices.

“In comparison to other towns, you will find we will be highly competitive even after the parking increases.

“When you look at how much we’re putting the charges up, it will cost you more in petrol to go to Crawley. The increases

History of the correct road Memory can play tricks with those of us of riper years – but not to the extent of failing to recognise a road located so close to my home.

The 1951 photograph featured in The Resident (October 14) is captioned: “East Street looking towards iron bridge.” Surely some mistake.

The road shown in both photographs is clearly Depot Road looking towards the junction with Comptons Lane, and

onwards into Hampers Lane and St Leonards Forest.

Looking at today’s coloured photograph, on the right one can spot the corner of Millais School, while on the left precious remaining allotments are clearly visible.

As a schoolgirl in 1951, I can recall wandering nearly the full length of Depot Road, without a house or human being in sight.

And, more importantly, without fear of being molested. Innocent days indeed!

Snakes, spiders and a growing problem According to research by the Pet Food Manufacturing Association, snakes are now a more common pet than horses.

Now, as Halloween approaches, a Horsham veterinary surgery is urging the owners of exotic pets to think about the standard of care they require.

Since 2006, Arthur Lodge has experienced a 15 per cent increase in clients who genuinely care for exotic pets.

But many owners, especially of snakes, simply cannot cope with the size that they grow to and choose to give them away.

With most rehoming services, such as the RSPCA’s, not having suitable facilities for exotic animals, most end up going back to reptile

houses.

Jemma Sulsh, veterinary surgeon at Arthur Lodge, said: “Spiders and snakes may be thought of by many as an unusual choice of pet, but they are becoming ever more popular.

“Care can differ depending on where spiders and snakes have originated from, so it is essential that owners are made aware of this when they purchase their pet and fully understand growth, environment and feeding requirements.”

More and more people are ‘thinking that it might be fun to take on an exotic pet ’

Klare Kennett, from the RSPCA, said: “More and more people are thinking that it might be fun to take on an exotic pet such as a snake or a reptile, but not considering

the time, money and expertise it will take to look after a pet like this properly.

“Unfortunately, the RSPCA then ends up having to pick up the pieces by rescuing the animal when it has been dumped and abandoned by an owner who can no longer care for it.”

It is vital that spiders and snakes are kept in a secure container, especially as snakes are renowned for escaping, but snakes must not be otherwise constricted in their movements.

Spiders and snakes enjoy a game of hide and seek, so a hiding place is essential. And some form of heat is needed in their container.

A spider’s diet consists mainly of insects, particularly crickets and locusts. Small snakes enjoy mice, unlike their larger counterparts who prefer a diet of rats and chicken.

‘Evacuees’ visit Christ’s Hospital

World War II history came alive at Christ’s Hospital School.

About 140 Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from Gossops Green Primary School caught a train from Ifield to Christ’s Hospital, pretending to be evacuees in 1940s costumes, including gas masks they had made.

Ben Vessey, deputy head of Christ’s Hospital School, met them at the station and marched them off to the famous school, where they discovered what it was like for war children away from their parents.

Practical money-saving solutions will be highlighted during an energy eco fair at County Hall North, Chart Way, Horsham, tomorrow (Saturday, 10am to 4pm).

Event spokesman Helen Whittington said: “It will be a real one-stop shop for everything to do with home energy. Most of us are eager to try to reduce our energy consumption, not just to help improve our carbon footprint but also because it will save us money.

“Unless you happen to be an expert already, it can be a pretty confusing subject. Hopefully people will find all the information and answers to their questions here under one roof.

“It’s free entry and there will be no hard sell, except perhaps on the coffee and cakes!

“As well as the business and information stalls, we have an exciting line-up of speakers on topics ranging from Modern Woodfuel heating to Saxon Weald’s Passivhaus housing developments in Horsham.”

Sheila Dale, of Greening Horsham, said: “With the global downturn and spending cuts biting, we are all likely to be feeling the pinch, so Greening Horsham’s energy eco fair couldn’t be more timely.

“There’s a whole raft of initiatives out there to help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and see our bills fall, but they can seem pretty confusing.

“From the very simplest (and free) measures, like closing curtains or blinds at night, draft proofing and insulation, right up to installing solar panels on your roof to generate your own electricity, there are things absolutely everyone can do reduce their bills significantly.”

Last year, councillors mounted rescue operations to clear pathways for trapped elderly residents.

West Sussex County Council and highways contractor Balfour Beatty last month unveiled their latest line of defence – a new fleet of 26 gritters.

The new gritters are equipped with a global positioning satellite (GPS) system called Coldsnap, which makes it possible to monitor gritting throughout the county on a minuteby-minute basis.

The county council already has a stockpile of 10,000 tonnes of salt and an electronic monitoring system so that more can be ordered if necessary.

Henfield Parish Council says it has a “full supply” of salt and grit in preparation for snow and ice.

A team of councillors and volunteers is standing by to shovel snow, grit pavements and make pathways around the High Street safe for residents.

Philip Hill, parish council clerk, said: “We have invested in a grit and salt spreading machine to make the job a little easier and will be watching the weather forecasts closely. But we do rely entirely on volunteers for snow clearance.”

Head sommelier at the venue in Lower Beeding, Dominic Roberts, chose wines throughout the evening that would compliment the food.

The event was sold out on all three nights, with the 22-cover restaurant packed out with food and wine lovers.

Courses on the first All Stars night included scallops, a hazelnut crusted venison, a cheese apple and popcorn medley and a chocolate desert shaped like a puzzle, which included shortbread and jelly made from milk bottle sweets.

At the event Matt Gillan said: “It’s been a terrific night. It wasn’t easy as you can imagine to get a group of top class and busy chefs together in one kitchen on the same night. But here

“The camaraderie between everyone has been a pleasure to see too.

I’m pleased everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.”

The Pass was opened in 2008 and Matt moved across as head chef having formerly worked in the hotel’s other restaurant, The Camellia.

The Pass has since been awarded three Rosettes by the prestigious AA Restaurant Guide and has just received its first Michelin Star.

New branch helps Horsham hear more clearly

The group of centres offers hearing healthcare services to people across the south.

A team of five new staff members has been recruited from the area, all of which share the same philosophy as director Rob Davies.

Branding is a subject that regularly confuses small business owners.

They are either unsure about the meaning of a ‘brand’, or don’t believe that branding is relevant to small businesses. If there’s one myth that I would like to bust in this chapter, it’s that branding is only for blue-chip businesses.

I hope to persuade you that branding is relevant to your business too and will show you the simple steps that can be taken towards building your small business into a brand.

I will also underpin these steps with case study examples of small businesses that are successfully developing brand awareness of their company.

Firstly, it is important that you are customer-focused and open to change. You need to recognise the importance of customer care and understand that there will be times when you need the support of other professionals, including designers, web developers and perhaps copywriters.

What Does the Word ‘Brand’ Actually Mean?

Occasionally I will hear a business owner saying ‘I’ve got my brand sorted out.’ What they are usually referring to is the design of their logo and business name.

These details are only two of the many aspects that contribute towards defining a brand.

Branding was encountered as far back as Anglo Saxon times, originating from the word ‘brandr’ meaning ‘to burn’. The Anglo Saxon farmer used branding as a means of stamping his ownership on his livestock.

Those farmers that enjoyed an excellent reputation would find that their brand was in demand, whereas the farmers with poorer quality livestock would struggle to sell their cattle to trade buyers.

And it’s not that different today.

Businesses that enjoy an excellent reputation are the ones we gravitate towards when we have available funds.

By contrast, the businesses that make the headlines for their poor customer service or inferior products are invariably ignored.

Many go out of business or spend

a considerable period of time and money on re-building a positive reputation.

Philip Kotler is one of the world’s most highly regarded marketing practitioners, and he offers the following definition of a brand: ‘A brand is a promise to your customers, the totality of perceptions about a product, service or business, the relationship customers have with it based on past experiences, present associations and future expectations... brand reality is always defined by the customer’s view.’

Kotler’s description suggests that at the heart of a successful brand is the delivery of a fantastic customer experience every time. This is because the power of your brand ultimately comes down to what your customers think about it.

Perhaps one of the best examples to illustrate the impact your brand can have upon your business is that of the Ratners Group.

Ratner jewellery had always been extremely popular with the public until Chief Executive Gerald Ratner made his infamous speech about the jewellery on offer in his chain of shops being cheap and of poor

quality.

The perception of the Ratner brand plummeted overnight and this nearly resulted in the firm’s collapse. And yet nothing had materially changed to the jewellery on sale in the High Street in those few hours.

What had changed, however, was the perception of the Ratner brand on the High Street. It was now regarded

as a firm selling cheap and nasty jewellery and making fools of their customers. Consequently, customers no longer wanted to be associated with it.

This example shows the power that customers wield in building or breaking a brand and how important it is for an ambassador of the business to recognise this fact.

£3m from Sainsbury’s to help kids get active Schools, clubs and nurseries across the county are taking delivery of ‘Active Kids’ equipment, thanks to money raised by Sainsbury’s stores in Horsham, Pulborough and Haywards Heath.

The Active Kids campaign allows schools, clubs and nurseries to register and collect vouchers, which are handed to customers at the checkouts. The stores have donated £3,235,358 worth of equipment through the programme since 2005.

Horsham, Pulborough and Haywards Heath were registered for this year’s campaign, and customers were able to collect vouchers between February and May. Sainsbury’s Horsham store manager, Ian Maxey, said: “Our customers have really helped make a difference to schools, clubs and nurseries across Horsham through donating Active Kids vouchers this year.

“We’d like to thank them for their support in our campaign, and we hope organisations in Horsham are

happy with this year’s array of Active Kids equipment, which we hope will make a positive contribution to their learning and well-being”.

This year, registered schools, clubs and nurseries across West Sussex were able to order equipment including kit set to Paralympic requirements, in the build-up to next year’s Paralympic Games. These included the ‘Butterfly Spacesaver Rollaway Table Tennis Table’, which has a wheelchair friendly design.

In total, 6,250 organisations signed

up to this year’s Active Kids campaign, and there are now over 46,000 organisations taking part in the Active Kids experience.

Since Active Kids began in 2005, over £115 million worth of equipment and experiences have been donated to schools, clubs and nurseries.

That’s 704,000 pieces of equipment.

scheme; Junior British record holder and sprinting star Jodie Williams and Beijing Paralympic Games swimming champion Ellie Simmonds. Jodie and Ellie will help raise awareness of the scheme in the run-up to next year’s 2012 Paralympic Games.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids manager Lindsay Burks said: “This year’s campaign has been a great success, both with our increased catalogue range including Paralympic sports equipment, through to having over 6,000 organisations sign up to the campaign this year. Active Kids continues to get bigger and better and with over £115 million worth of equipment now donated since the campaign began. It shows just how committed we are to giving children of today a healthy lifestyle”.

‘Greedy breweries’ blamed for Malt Shovel closure The Malt Shovel, the popular pub in Horsham’s town centre, has closed.

In a message on the venue’s website, landlady Lyn Williams said: “Sadly, it’s true. Malt Shovel has closed”.

“Due to greedy breweries, high costs and low margins I’m afraid they’ve killed us.

“Thanks to everyone who has supported us for the last six years, especially the amazing musicians in and around Horsham, we have had many ‘WOW’evenings.

“Hopefully, the pub will re-open shortly and with new people and they will continue with what we started”.

Rene and the rest don’t disappoint in ‘Allo ‘Allo James Hood Entertainment Editor

It was like being transported back to my parent’s living room on a Saturday night in 1988, on a recent

visit to The Capitol.

And the reason? A local and respected theatre company recreated ‘Allo ‘Allo, live on stage, taking me, and I’m sure many others, on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

It goes without saying that the show included every one of the

much-loved phrases from the TV show (well, it wouldn’t be ‘Allo ‘Allo without the famous ‘listen very carefully, I shall say zis only once’ line).

And there was plenty of sexual innuendo to boot.

What was perhaps most impressive was the likeness to some of the original characters of the TV show, which I found myself remembering as, one by one, they made their appearance on stage (to the delight of fans in the audience).

Kevin Sharp, who played leading man, Rene Artois was a perfect fit.

Not least because of his moustache, and a little paunch (sorry Kevin – perhaps it was stuffing) but also because of his superb portrayal of the cheating husband, who we just can’t help but like.

And the rest of the cast didn’t disappoint. Edith, Yvette and Mimi were all present and played their roles with gusto, and all with fabulously comical French accents.

place on a London Stage. They did the script, written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, proud. Even the lesserknown characters (the occasional lieutenant and general), supported the leading actors professionally, adding to the air of quality from this well-put-together production.

I’m told rehearsal time was minimal, which only shows that this team is a class act, particularly under the direction of Michael Gattrell, whose personality and love of the theatre shone through.

Together they make up the Hit & Run Theatre Company, which is responsible for bringing us this hilarious war-time caper.

The company is currently working on a production of The 39 Steps, showing in February, and Sordid Lives – coming in May 2012.

Music workshops this half term Ever dreamed of being a lead singer? Want to know what it feels like to be the rhythm section of a band?

Have a hankering to move away from bedroom noodling to a more social music experience?

If your answer is yes to any of these questions the Horsham District Live Music Alliance (HDLMA) maybe able to help.

During the October half term the HDLMA will be holding Live Music Workshops, which give young people aged 10 to 16 the chance to experience a studio environment and work alongside session musicians to develop their skills on guitar, keyboard, bass, drums and vocals.

A big emphasis is placed on playing as part of a band and the session musicians will show how a band functions and demonstrate the different techniques this involves.

That said, this is a hands on workshops and participants should be prepared to get involved and have a go.

The workshops will be held on Wednesday October 26 and there

will be two sessions 10am – 1:30pm aimed at the beginner and 2:30pm – 6:30pm aimed at intermediates (intermediate session will include a cd recording of your final song). Beginner session cost £20 (£10 Leisure Access Card) Intermediates session costs £25 (£12.50 Leisure Access Card).

Band releases charity single on iTunes Sussex-based band, No Pressure, have released their first single in aid of the Macmillian Cancer Trust.

The track is available on iTunes and Amazon and is a ‘rocking’ version of Sinead O’Connor’s classic Nothing Compares 2 U. The track is taken from the bands forthcoming EP, Cloudcover.

Bass player, Roger Johnson, said: We felt it would be a bit of fun to release the single and at the same time to try to raise some money for a worthwhile cause.”

The band’s members are from

Horsham and Storrington and have been together for more than two years.

They play around the Sussex area, including regular appearances at the Holbrook Club. The popular covers band is made up of Ken Robertson on vocals, Richard Donnelly on keyboards, Dave Hatto on guitars, Roger Johnson on bass and Tony Hanks on drums.

Halloween treat for town’s music lovers A concert has been organised on the Band Stand in Horsham’s Carfax on Saturday, October 29, with a bunch of bands that are so good – it’s scary!

The Rockin’ Halloween event kicks off at 1pm and will go on until about six. It will include five of the areas top bands. The line up and details of each band are as follows: 1pm - Tony Stone - one man and his guitar at its very best, who’s often referred to as the human jukebox.

With a mix of their punked up versions of classic songs (which you will recognise), cover versions of rock & punk from the 60’s to the present day, they are a covers band with a

difference.

5pm - Hollows Of Venus - a femalefronted rock band that have been delivering high energy shows in and around the area for nearly five years.

They’ve built a strong reputation locally, entertaining packed pubs with their loud and lively renditions of rock classics by artists from Led Zeppelin, to Guns n’ Roses and Neil Young, through to The Foo Fighters and Pink. Expect a hit-packed set, with one or two 80’s classics also being given the rock makeover. They promise to debut a spooky and ghostly classic - all rocked up HOV-style!

Battle of the Bands - Heat Two

Last week, at the Chameleon club, Horsham Battle Of The Bands continued with part two, in a fashion more exciting than ever.

During the second helping, it became evident that the preceding heat was just a warm-up, with even higher anticipation surrounding the next phase of the annual competition, and the bands battling it out for the title.

Tackling the challenge that comes with being the first band to take to the stage on the night were Tell Wolves Tales; a trio who have been busy making their mark on the local live music

scene this year, as well as engaging in plenty of work in the studio.

Their concoction of rock ‘n’ roll riffs, pounding rhythms and a likeable stage presence proved extremely impressive and very entertaining.

Following this three-piece of established musicians were young hardcore metal quintet A Few Days Remain, whose in-your-face attitude blended well with their crushing breakdowns and powerful melodies.

Notably getting the crowd involved with a number of participation-heavy manoeuvres and frequently leaping into the audience mid-song. The set was filled with raw enthusiasm and brutally endearing spirit.

If any audience member thought that the last performance was as

heavy as it could get, they would be taken aback amidst the arrival of This Means War. Cranking the ferocity up to 11, this four-piece’s death metal numbers were pulled off with tenacity and skill.

With cohesion between the four band members as heavy as the sounds they superbly delivered during their set, This Means War’s potential shone throughout.

The truly wonderful aspect of the following performance, provided by three-piece The Causeway Occupation, was that its content contrasted so marvellously with the two previous bands’ material.

However, this trio’s joyful indierock was as sharp as their suited attire, and fired out rays of musical

sunshine. As unique as you can get tonight, their diversity became something to really admire.

Nevertheless, the metal motifs made a return once again this evening, as Afterthought took to the stage.

With an average age of just 16, their youthful excitement was a catalyst for the impact of their blistering metalcore, solid fretboard work and lightning-fast drum patterns, culminating in a confident climax and making this close-to-call contest closer than ever!

The sixth and final band to perform for the crowds in the second heat, Gutter Fly, were also an entertaining alternative to the heavy tones that filled the first half, bringing both might and melody in the form of their high-octane rock.

Influenced by a wide range of artists, including AC/DC, Metallica and Muse, their fusion sounds meant that every part of their set was unexpected, and thus a fitting conclusion to the night.

At the end of the evening, third place went to This Means War, while Gutter Fly were secured a place in the final attaining second place, before Tell Wolves Tales emerged victorious, and were given a slot at the final at Horsham’s Carfax bandstand on Friday October 28.

Finalist frontman Jak Paxton said: “It went really well tonight - we were actually entered anonymously!”

And what can audiences expect from the final? “Music!”, he added.

UK’s ‘finest’ jazz singer showcases new album Clare Teal, one of the UK’s finest jazz singers, has returned to song writing and recording, and has released her tenth album – Hey Ho. The singer has been working on the latest record for almost two years. She said: “I sat down with my producer and musical director Grant Windsor and over excessive cups of coffee and too many custard creams compiled a list of nearly 1000 songs.

“Songs that had been written by British people, inspired by British people or merely sounded ‘Brit-ish’.

“This was whittled down to 200 using an ancient process involving various single malt whiskies (not the peaty ones). From there the very serious deliberation began, it’s easy to sing a song you love, it’s a different matter entirely to attempt to bring

something new to a song that other people love.”

Although rooted in the jazz traditions of the 1930’s and 40’s Clare’s record covers a wide spectrum of sounds and genres and everything from an 1889 poem, Down by the Sally Gardens to Snow Patrol’s 2005 hit, Chasing Cars.

As a lifelong fan of Jazz icon Dame Cleo Laine, Clare was keen to include the song Cleo co-wrote with Stanley Myers in the 70’s.

The singer added: “Cleo is the best, not content with being one of the finest singers on the planet, she has to go and write incredible songs too!

“Singing He Was Beautiful in front of the great lady was terrifying. She didn’t run away screaming – but

then Cleo does have a bad hip.”

Songs Try a Little Tenderness (Woods, Connelly & Campbell) and A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square (Maschwitz, Sherwin & Strachey), started the work on the album.

As well as a collection of some of her favourite songs, Hey Ho also includes two original compositions.

One More (Baby Be Good To Me) and Whole (It Isn’t Like Me) nestle easily amongst the more famous songs on the album. One More is an uplifting tribute to the old motown sound, written by Clare, partner Muddy Field and Grant Windsor.

Meanwhile, Whole was inspired by a recent trip to the USA’s West Coast where Clare and Muddy drove 600 miles from San Diego to San Francisco.

Clare has been voted British Jazz Singer of the year twice and the BBC’s Jazz Singer of the Year.

Away from her singing work, Clare is becoming increasingly well known to radio listeners for her two weekly big band shows on BBC Radio 2, whether it be Clare Teal Sunday Night at 10pm or Big Band Special on Mondays at 11pm.

Now, Clare is touring, performing tracks from Hey Ho. Having performed this summer at Glastonbury, Brecon Jazz Festival, Regents Park Open Air Theatre and London’s Cadogan Hall, she is stopping at The Capitol on Sunday, November 13.

Is it the right time to remortgage?

The last few months have seen some positive activity in the mortgage market with many banks and building societies being proactive in their search for market share. Although the Bank Of England have kept interest rates at 0.5% for over two years now, many lenders have been reducing the mortgage rates that are available .

The interest rates being offered are also becoming more competitive with new lenders entering the market place and established banks and building societies increasing there offerings. The “buy to let” market, which has been starved of choice over the last three years, is finally seeing some competition as far as lenders and interest rates. This could re-ignite an investor’s appetite and again help towards getting the housing market moving.

For any borrowers on lenders standard variable rate’s, now could be the perfect time to look around for a better deal. If you are looking for peace of mind and security over a number of years, fixed rates are at record lows.

The more equity you have, the better the rate you are likely to be offered.

For those who are more adventurous, tracker mortgage’s are also offering great value. Although your mortgage rate will follow whatever the Bank of England decide to do with interest rates, our view is that it will be some time before interest rates start to rise. With offset mortgages still available and most products having overpayment options, there has never been a better time to review your finances and make sure you have the best mortgage product on offer.

Some scheme’s are fee’s free to arrange and in some instances, the lender is actually paying the borrower to take the mortgage out!

Our house, built in the Thirties, has small clay tiles – a fair number of which were broken in one area when an amateur went up to erect a television aerial. A quote to take off the ridge tiles (mortar is going) and replace the tiles is reasonable (£450) but the roofer also suggests that he should pressure-wash the tiles and apply a waterproof coating. There is no sign of moss or significant algae, but he says it will extend the life of the tiles by 25 years. I am dubious about the wisdom of having this done. Do you have any advice?

A

I suspect that the person who you think is charging you a “reasonable” price is not actually a trained roofer, but a bit of a con man. £450 sounds to me like a good week’s wage for most people in today’s economic climate. I doubt whether your man is planning to spend a full working week of his life up on your roof, however. And I am not clear about what you mean when you say your mortar is “going”.

Mortar is a sacrificial medium, whether it is between courses of bricks or bedding ridge tiles on top of roofs.

Surface weathering of mortar is to be expected, and not necessarily a sign that wholesale replacement is required.

As regards the idea that roof tiles should be pressurewashed and waterproofed, I’m afraid that this is bunkum.

Pressure-washing will remove a fine surface layer which will actually shorten the life of roof tiles, rather than extend it. And waterproof sealants have an effective life of only a year or two before they need recoating.

Local Vauxhall retailer, Stevens in Horsham, is celebrating the extension of the company’s highly successful Flexible Finance scheme.

Coach Hugo Langton has urged Horsham’s players to show some bottle after a 5-0 League Cup beating on Wednesday.

Craig Davies (13 minutes) and Williams Peauroux (16) put the Hornets 2-0 up in a 2-2 draw against the Metropolitan Police on Saturday, ending a run of seven league games without a point.

But Horsham crashed to defeat at Folkestone Invicta, promotion contenders in Ryman League Division 1 South, who scored through James Everitt (two), Darren Smith (penalty), Josh Burchell and Cade Mortimer.

Manager Justin Luchford made seven changes on Wednesday, most forced by injuries, but Langton told The Resident: “That’s not an excuse

for losing 5-0. Some of the players went through the motions a little bit.

“They don’t realise how lucky they are to play, whether it’s in front of 30 people or 60,000. It’s easy to forget that on a cold, wintry night in Folkestone.

“The performance was a bit naïve, a little bit lacklustre, and these are things we need to address quickly.

“The players are nice guys, but one or two of them perhaps need to look at themselves and see if they’re at the right level of football. That’s what we need to look at too.

“We are looking to strengthen the squad before the weekend. We’re lacking leadership and experience, but when your budget is tight it’s difficult to get players in. Experienced Ryman League players don’t come cheap.”

Langton exempted Dane Luchford from criticism, describing the lone striker as “outstanding” and adding:

Unless the Trophy tie goes to a replay, the Hornets face Horsham YMCA in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday.

Tom Killner-Brown hit a hattrick as Horsham U16 won 5-2 at Seagulls U16 in the County Cup. Jake Legrange rose majestically to head a fifth-minute opener from George Hole’s cross before KillnerBrown scored the first of his treble.

Seagulls cut the young Hornets’ lead to 2-1 and 3-2, but speedy striker Legrange created two goals for Killner-Brown including a penalty to complete his hat-trick.

Horsham U14 overcame a spirited Seagulls U14 side to win 5-3 in the Sussex Sunday League Knockout Cup. Jack Reeves headed the opening goal from Finn Bigg’s cross and Liam Clarke finished well just before and after half time as Horsham seemed set for a comfortable win.

But they were made to sweat as Seagulls produced a stunning comeback to level at 3-3.

Horsham YMCA U18 fought back from 2-0 down to draw 3-3 with champions Burgess Hill U18 in the Ryman Youth League, despite losing 7-0 to the same opponents in the FA Youth Cup. Louis Masih’s double and a late third from Max Love appeared to have earned the home side all three points before YM conceded a 79thminute equaliser.

Callum’s treble does the trick Matthew James & Matt Streeter Youth Football

Lower Beeding and Handcross Lions U15 edged a 5-4 thriller against Steyning Strikers U15 in Division A of the Horsham and District Youth League (HDYL).

Callum Nash scored a hat-trick as the Lions recovered from 2-0 down, first reducing their arrears through Andrew Roberts before the break.

Roberts’ defence-splitting pass set up Nash for an equaliser and the striker poached his second goal when the Steyning goalkeeper spilled the ball.

Strikers levelled with a super strike from outside the box, but it was not enough as Nash completed his hattrick and a great cross from Aaron Pyzer met the head of diving Glenn Johnson.

It was a nailbiting last 10 minutes as Steyning dominated possession and scored with two minutes left, but the Lions held on to claim the points.

David Field made some important saves.

Southwater Red U18 beat Avisford U18 5-3 in Division A of the Arun

and Chichester Youth League.

Goals from Elliott Wallace and Zach Haulkham (two) were cancelled out as Avisford fought back from 3-1 down, only to see Adam Laker put Southwater back in front.

Wallace put the icing on Southwater’s cake by scoring from the halfway line.

Horsham Sparrows U16 deservedly claimed their first HDYL win of the season with a 3-2 win at home to Steyning Strikers U16.

Dan Barna opened the scoring on the half hour with a well-placed shot from a tight angle.

Steyning equalised twice, but Zac Chinn unleashed a swerving free kick and later finished precisely after persistent running by Dan Stutchbury and Barna.

Also in Division A, Royal United U16 extended their unbeaten run with a hotly contested 3-2 win against Albury Eagles U16.

Goal machine Jake Legrange added two more to his already impressive tally and Alex Parsons scored another cracker from 20 yards. Midfielder Callum McHale worked hard.

Division C. Adam Bolitho and Richard Castle created the opening goal for Jake Abell, but Heath were fortunate as Crusaders hit the woodwork several times in the second half.

Olympic made it 5-5 in the final minute, but Laker scored his second almost immediately afterwards.

Forest U10 beat previously unbeaten ASC Strikers U10 3-2 and 5-0 in a double header.

Josh Dance (two) and Stan Ward scored in the first match. Matthew Dunningham (two), William Michell, Jamie Buchanan and Tom Colbran were on target in the second game as Forest passed the ball more fluently.

PBs for Atlantis swimmers at Sheffield Andrew Dunlop Youth Swimming

Atlantis swimmers performed well for Sussex in the British Gas National Inter-County Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

Cameron Lambourne, Sam Carter, Issy Dunlop and Beth Britton competed against the cream of young British swimming talent as 38 teams contested two divisional competitions.

First up for Atlantis was Lambourne, 16, in the 16/17-year 100m freestyle.

He finished third in his heat in a personal best (PB) time of 52.68, inside the short course national qualifying time of 53.01.

County debutant Britton, 12, swam magnificently in the 12/13-year

100m free, taking third in her heat in a PB of 1.02.24.

Dunlop, 16, was fourth in her heat of the 16/17-year 100m breast in yet another short course PB, 1.14.51.

The Atlantis swimmers also recorded quick times in relays, but their strong performance was not quite enough to prevent Sussex being relegated to Division 2.

Atlantis chairman Andrew Dunlop, recently elected to the management committee of the Sussex ASA, said: “It was disappointing that Sussex were not able to retain their Division 1 status, but all of the Sussex squad swam their hearts out and gave of their best.

“The Atlantis swimmers certainly kept their end up with some great swims. The county will be working very hard to ensure we earn promotion back to Division 1 next year.”

So after an amazing start to their Championship campaign, in which Albion took 16 points from a possible 18, they have only taken two from the next 18.

At least they haven’t lost the last couple 3-1 after being 1-0 up.

Albion did very well to stop the losing streak against a strong Hull City side, gaining a very good point while keeping a clean sheet.

Saturday was a great day all round.

Fellow North West Sussex Seagull Nigel and I met up with a few Mid Sussex lads and headed over to Lewes for a few refreshments before the game.

Coming from Lewes, I was tour leader and as such had planned a circular route around the town, starting and finishing at the station. We visited several sites of special interest – The Royal Oak, The Lewes Arms, The Dorset etc.

We also met up with a group of Hull lads who had decided that Lewes, rather than Brighton, would be their watering hole before the game.

As we toured the historic sites, it was clear that Lewes has become the place to go for many home and away fans. And why not? It has a direct link to London and is only one stop from Falmer.

On the other hand, any trip to Millwall is never something an away fan really looks forward to – and Tuesday evening’s trip to The New Den was no different.

There would be no chance of visiting the historic sites of Bermondsey, even if there were any, so we made do with a little place just outside London Bridge.

Leaving in plenty of time to get to the ground, we and several hundred Albion and Millwall fans were herded

by The Met onto a waiting train for the four-minute trip to South Bermondsey.

At the station is a caged walkway for away fans to safely walk the 400m to the away end of the ground. Locally known as Cowards Way, it does seem a little over the top and something of a kickback to the bad old days.

Mind you, I’m not sure the South London Dockers have ever left the bad old days, especially after watching some of their fans during the game.

Albion earned a point in a physical game on a very poor pitch. Had Ryan Harley not made such a hash of his penalty, we might have come away with all three points.

Horsham survive fightback Josh Tolhurst Rugby Union

Horsham fended off the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) in a remarkable match to reach the second round of the RFU Senior Vase.

The home side broke the deadlock when Liam Yeates picked up a loose ball and ran half the length of the pitch to touch down, but Horsham’s lead didn’t last long as the HAC fly half wriggled through to score.

A brilliant crossfield kick by Will Johnson allowed Sam Rice to steal the ball and race to the line for Horsham’s second try.

Out of nowhere, Horsham started to run away with the game as Dan Bourne superbly cut inside from the right wing, sidestepped a defender and put the ball over the line.

HAC started to press and had the home side camped on their own line.

But Johnson quickly took a penalty and brilliantly ran the length of the

Motor Sport Southwater’s Rory Cooper finished fourth in the 750 Motor Club series with 580 points, only two points from second.

Cooper, who attended Southwater Primary School, The Forest School and Collyer’s, ended the season on the podium twice after finishing third and second at Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire.

He was only 0.72 seconds behind race winner Patrick Fletcher, who finished one point ahead of him in the championship.

Sixty-five drivers contested races during the season and 57 scored points.

It was a different story in the second half as HAC scored four more tries while Horsham switched off and failed to score another point.

Horsham would have been in serious trouble if HAC had converted the tries, rather than missing every kick.

HAC’s winger scored two almost identical tries, their hooker threw himself over the line and another HAC score left Horsham hanging on to a six-point lead.

Two-try Sam Rice on the run for Horsham

Horsham U14 scored eight tries in a 48-12 win against Eastbourne U14 in the Sussex A League.

Flying winger George Palmer claimed four of them, including a sensational solo effort early in the match.

Starting 10m from Horsham’s line, he chased his own huge kick out of defence, demonstrated better dribbling skills than most of the Hornets’ first team, picked the ball up near the try line and popped it down between the posts.

Matt Collier (two), Duncan Watkins and Alex Clery also scored tries.

Callum Boswell kicked three conversions and Rowan Murphy-Hunt another, while hooker Todd Lowe was Horsham’s player of the match.

Horsham U12 won the Chichester festival, beating Chichester A U12 10-5 in the final after wins in their group against Haywards Heath U12 (5-0), Bognor U12 (30-0), Portsmouth U12 (30-0) and Chichester B U12 (5-0).

Head coach Dayle Kirby said: “This was an excellent start to the season.

I’m very proud of all of the boys for their hard work.”

Darts BBH Village Centre started their Horsham 5s campaign in style with an 8-0 demolition of newly promoted Mill House. Andy Mason recorded a 110 checkout.

The Stout House’s Tim John achieved the first 180 of the season, but it was not enough to stop Roffey Club winning 5-3.

The same score accompanied The Shelley Arms’ debut in the A division, a narrow defeat against The Windmill, while The Fountain drew 4-4 with Kings Arms B.

Captain leads from front for Horsham Martin Read Hockey

Horsham jumped two places to third with a 5-1 win against Sevenoaks 2nds.

The home side retained possession well with fast, attacking hockey against bigger and more experienced opposition. But they were denied by scrambled saves until John Burroughs opened the scoring after 15 minutes.

Further strikes went unrewarded before Mark Ansell added a second goal. Such was Horsham’s domination

that a half-time score of 5-0, rather than 2-0, would not have been unrealistic.

Occasional and highly optimistic shots from the visitors failed to mount a serious challenge while Horsham moved forward relentlessly, enabling the ubiquitous Burroughs to find the net again.

A scrappy goal against the run of play reduced Horsham’s advantage, but Duncan Howarth put them further ahead two minutes later.

Fifteen-year-old John Kimberley delivered the final blow as Horsham coasted home without further alarms.

Delighted captain Burroughs said:

“We’re going well and creating many chances. We just need to finish off a little better.”

Coach Sam Naismith agreed, adding: “We’re capable of more and it was disappointing to concede a soft goal, but I’m very happy where we are with our young side.”

Tomorrow (Saturday), Horsham face a tough contest at unbeaten Kent side Marden Russets, who are one place above them in the league.

Horsham Ladies are still searching for their first win after losing 5-0 to leaders Surbiton Ladies, whose powerful side included two internationals.

Horsham restricted the visitors to just one goal in the first half, but Surbiton asserted their superiority after the break.

Coach Warren Gilmore said: “It was disappointing to see us concede four goals from short corners, but this is a very tough league with some strong sides.

“The team is trying hard and our build-up play has been good. Now we need to start turning some of these moves into goals to boost confidence.”

Horsham Ladies will seek to break their duck at second-placed St Albans Ladies tomorrow.

The Alfred Shrubb five-mile crosscountry race will take place on Sunday, starting at Slinfold Cricket Club (11am).

A children’s race over about half a mile will start at 10.15am, with each child and adult competitor receiving a medal.

Horsham Joggers hope local residents will support the event in memory of Slinfold-born Alfred Shrubb, who held many world records in the early part of the 20th century.

Youth Basketball Horsham Hawks U14 produced an impressive display to beat Crawley Cagers 71-39 at Tanbridge House School.

Max Dodd top-scored with 19 points, while Jacob Larby contributed 14, Ola Edgal 12 and Aaron Sparrowhawk 10.

Horsham Hawks U12 conceded the first basket but overwhelmed SWRA Storm U12 89-10 before winning 5327 at Angmering Cobras U12.

Vernon remains upbeat despite weekend of woe at Silverstone Kieran Vernon suffered a dismal finish to a promising debut season in the Porsche Carrera Cup. But the BRDC Rising Star’s disappointment at Silverstone was soon put into perspective by the death of Indy driver Dan Wheldon, a former Rising Star, in Nevada on Sunday.

The Pride of West Chiltington takes us through his weekend of woe and his highlights after taking over from 2010 champion Tim Harvey partway through the season.

Qualifying A small issue with the brakes forced us to be out of sync with everybody on the track. Even though I got held up into Beckets on the first flying lap I set, this was my fastest.

The track in the second run simply did not offer the same performance it had in the first. The best I could do was to be within a tenth of my fastest, which really showed how much higher up we could have qualified.

To be 11th and 12th for the races was a real disappointment.

Race one I held my position off the start, but I really struggled to hold on to Rory Butcher. I was struggling to turn into the corners and I believe the water hose that eventually broke off was leaking on the front tyres.

It eventually burst big-style going into turn two Beckets, forcing me to run very wide as it put coolant on my own tyres.

I rejoined in dramatic fashion, only to see warning messages of high temperature on the dash, so I pulled off to avoid any further damage.

Race two After a great job by my mechanic Gary and everyone else at Motorbase, I got a good start and from the word go felt very confident in the car.

I moved up from 12th to eighth position, fighting for sixth and seventh with championship contender Stephen Jelley and Richard Plant.

It was a great battle, but a small mistake by Jelley at Luffield put an end to my challenge as I tagged the back of his car, puncturing my radiator.

It was a great shame as the fight with Jelley ended up being for the podium, something I truly believe we could have achieved in that race. It was a real shame to retire from both races.

Season From where we started at Oulton Park to finishing in the top five, fighting the championship contenders regularly, is beyond what I expected to achieve after missing all the preseason tests and four race meetings.

We made big-chunk improvements every meeting, being so close on pace even round the longest circuit at Snetterton.

A highlight of the season was the storming drive in race one at

Knockhill. It was great to finally get a real feel for moving through the pack in a Carrera Cup car, something I found very difficult at Snetterton.

We qualified fifth at Rockingham, only 0.2 seconds from pole position.

This was especially difficult as I had no data to compare, like we did in the final round when Nick Tandy was onboard, so to be so close to the pole time was a huge achievement.

We followed up with the best result to that point, a very tough sixth with no front splitter.

Then the race results at Brands Hatch, my favourite circuit in the UK and without doubt the best weekend we enjoyed.

We moved from eighth to fifth and sixth in the two races, fighting our way through the field and avoiding a puncture.
