Three years ago, a mystery man pulled his car into Hornbeam Close, Horsham, and snatched Sage as he wandered about near his home. Sage’s owner Nicky Blyth, then only 14, was naturally devastated, as was Sage’s sister and playmate, Parsley. As the days turned to weeks and months, there seemed little hope in finding Sage. That was until he turned up in Rusper, malnourished and feeding on birds. It was another year though, when he was taken to the vet by a lady who had found him and cared for him, when it was found he was chipped. And after a three year adventure, he was reunited last week with Nicky. Nicky said: “We got Sage and Parsley, our Tabby cat, when they were six weeks old about four years ago. “Sage used to go off for a day like some cats do, so we didn’t really worry at first, but as a couple of days went by we became more worried.
Pussycat, Where have you been? “One of the neighbours saw somebody drive in and grab a black cat, so we thought that must have been Sage. We asked around the area without any luck and when he never came back we assumed he had died. “When he disappeared I was only 14 so I was very upset. He was my baby! So it was amazing to hear he had returned. “Rod called me up whilst I was in Portugal on holiday and I couldn’t wait to get back. It’s like he has never been away. He is very affectionate but still tries to push me off my own bed. He thinks he owns the place! It was Nicky’s stepfather Rod Kershaw who took the call from the veterinary clinic. Rod said: “I was working away and got this call from a vet in Brighton. “He said ‘do you own a cat called Sage?’ I replied that we did, and explained that he’d been stolen three years ago. Goodbye, Lewis
The Resident’s Studio Manager, Lewis Forsaith, left last Friday. Lewis, 21, started out as our delivery boy until we realised he was good with computers. Ever since then, Lewis had designed advertisements in The Resident. He was a familiar sight in Horsham, riding around town on his black BMX bike while keeping his wavey fringe in perfect order. We will miss him for
his petanque skills, his ‘mum’ jokes, and his technical knowhow. We will not miss his illtimed cigarette breaks late on deadline day, his sudden urge to play The Sex Pistols on deadline day, or him never buying a round of beers on any day! He returns home to France, and we wish him all the very best for the future. Stepping into his fancy French designer boots is Steve Goodwin from Horsham.

School soldiers on to new level Within ten minutes of the new performing arts centre at Queen Elizabeth II School being opened, its pupils were on stage performing a musical medley. Not only was it a great way to celebrate after an exhaustive three year fundraising campaign, but it also demonstrated that work still needs to be done. For many of the parents and guests attending the opening of the £500,000 facility needed to stand at the back of the hall, due to the lack of raised seating. That will come from an extra £45,000 that is still needed to complete the new hall. The school hopes to have raised the money in time for a performance of Peter Pan in November. Three years ago, Julie Bateman, a mother of one of the pupils, Ella, attended a school production. Inspired by the children’s enthusiasm and talent, she spearheaded the fundraising campaign, organising events including parties, golf and polo
days, children's fun days, and concerts and balls. Julie said: “My quest to raise money to build a new theatre and art centre for the children has been the most rewarding and wonderful experience. The school is so special. All the children love QE II and gain so much confidence and happiness from their experiences of art and drama; the new facility will enable them to achieve so much more.” It was Julie who was given the honour o f cutting the Julie Bateman (left) officially opened the new studio and performing arts facility at Q E II School on Wednesday ribbon on Wednesday afternoon. Julie thanked the endeavour and generosity of all of those who had contributed to making the facility possible and added: “This truly is a beautiful

Three years if you would have told me we’d be stood here today opening a £500,000 performing arts facility, I’d have said ‘in your dreams’. “But that’s now a reality and that really is all down to Julie.” The School’s philosophy of using performing arts has proved really successful, but its old studio had become inadequate - audiences had to be crammed into every available space and the
growing number of pupils made it difficult for whole school productions. But it’s clear that the new centre will prove a big hit with the pupils. QE II is also keen to share the benefits of its new studio with the wider community. Lesley continued: “We look forward to sharing our fabulous resource with the local community

“WE ARE WORKING ON TRYING TO GET CLASSIC FRENCH CARS IN FOR NEXT YEAR”
FrenchFest is a feast of colour and culture Other than the France football team coming into The Carfax, losing a game of football before sulking away in different directions, Horsham couldn’t have been a lot more French at the weekend. As always, the authentic French market in the Carfax and Napoleonic re-enactors, the 45eme, who were seen drilling new recruits, were among the highlights of the three day festival, held on Friday to Sunday. But the organisers (its a Horsham District Council event) have helped keep the festival fresh with some new additions. There was a party of Nor-
man re-enactors on the Saturday and an opportunity to get ‘hands on’ with impressionist painting by Horsham Open Studios in the Carfax on Sunday. Also on Saturday Kinetika gyms ran a successful ‘Tour de Horsham’ prize challenge. The petanque again went down well in Market Square with the Southern Petanque Association. On Friday

Sunday probably needs a big event to draw a bigger crowd, so we are working on trying to get classic French cars in for next year. “But again, we had people who had travelled from out of the area to be here, and there’s defintely a benefit to businesses if they are willing to be involved.” Horsham FrenchFest 2010 is sponsored by East Street’s La Source and Cote Brasserie.

Horsham awoke in B-movie hell on Tuesday morning. No, not genetically mutated spiders, or giant Mako Sharks that can swim backwards and eat Samuel L Jackson whilst he’s on dry land, but massive swarms of mating flying ants. At first glance, you’ll have been forgiven for thinking the epidemic was localised to your house only (in our case, the children’s paddling pool!) but it was nationwide. We were going to do a big, silly Hollywood movie style graphic of killer ants. But seeing as they don’t actually bite and they were all pretty much gone by Wednesday so nobody cares, we shelved the idea. Large female ants pick one day a year to mate by sensing temperature, humidity and day length. What you were watching was a huge mating ritual. The men die afterwards while the women shed their wings before making a new colony.

it’s been an eventful - and no doubt testing - period for spofforths Chartered accountants. But the Horsham based business managed to keep disruption to a minimum after a huge and dramatic fire destroyed its town centre headquarters last October. And last week staff celebrated moving into new premises with an opening party. The professional advisers are now based at Comewell House on North Street, following the fire at the firm’s Horsham Gates site last October. Around 100 guests attended the event which provided them with the opportunity to meet the team and look around the new offices. More than just a game! FrenchFest 2010
The team from Cote Brasserie are jubilant as a superb late throw keeps them in their tight first round match against The Resident. But still, it was the boys from the East Street restaurant who bowed out early in the entertaining but surprisingly competitive FrenchFest inter-business petanque competition. The Resident, defending champions, were not to have it all their own way. They were defeated in a tense, tactical final against estate agents Brock Taylor. Peter Maskell and Alex Bethall snatched a 7-6 victory against The Resident team of Lewis Forsaith (who is French, so blame should be placed at his feet) and Matthew Wheeler to lift the May Gurney Cup. Also taking part were ladies fashion store Cape Scarlett, who lost out to the Council’s Economic Development Team, Country Produce who defeated Panino Cafe in the first round, Crickmay, who
were the first to face the eventual winners, as well as La Source and Horsham Rotary Club. Peter Maskell said: “I’m quite competitive so even though it’s just a fun thing it was a really tense tournament. Quite a few of the teams were taking it very seriously. “We were 4-1 down at one point in the final so it was nice to come back and take victory with pretty much the last ball. “It’s a great tournament so of course we’ll be back next year to defend our trophy. We currently have it up in the office, and it’s up to The Resident or anyone else to see if they can take it off us next year.” Of course, The Resident knows it’s all just a bit of fun,
might even congratulate Brock Taylor once we’ve finishing writing our letter to the English Petanque Association over the small matter of an unseen foot infringement made in the final. It’s only fair that the whole game be replayed! That aside, The Resident would like to thank Horsham District Council, Horsham Rotary Club and May Gurney for staging the event. It’s great fun, and it’s a bit sad that more businesses didn’t join in the fun. It’s held on Friday lunchtime for heaven’s sake, are you really all too busy? Come on!

Sparks to ignite on Sunday First things first- what is Sparks in the Park? It’s something we haven’t had before. It’s Horsham’s largest free summer event for families and has been organised by Horsham District Council. It’ll be held this Sunday, from 12-5pm.
So why should I go? Well, it’s free, and there’s lots going on for all ages. There will be live music, comedy entertainers, have-a-go sports with free coaching, an It’s a Knockout competition, carnival flag making, samba and junk music, finishing with a spectacular carnival parade. Where’s all this happening? Horsham Park
But isn’t the funfair coming to town? Yes, and that’s sort of being incorporated into the event, although you’ll have to pay for rides as normal.
Okay, so tell me more about this carnival... This is going to be one the highlights of the day, and they’re calling it the One World Carnival; it’ll feature over 80 fantastic giant-size costumes. You can either watch or help make colourful flags for the parade, join in samba workshops or even help decorating a giant carnival cube.
Didn’t I see a colourful parade like this during a FrenchFest? You did, but that was just a small teaser for Sunday’s event.
Why did I think Sparks in the Park was about the Olympics? You’re not far off the mark. People across the whole of the country are celebrating the London 2012 Open Weekend, and Sparks in the Park is our contribution.
So I can take part in sports than? You can. Sparks is linking in with the Open Weekend celebrations, so in the park on Sunday you can try out urban
rebounding, stoolball, football, karate, basketball, tennis, rounders .
trict to achieve their goals of becoming future Champions and Olympians.
baseball
and
What’s urban rebounding? It’s essentially aerobics on a little trampoline, but with a cooler name.
And I can try all of this at the park? You can indeed. In fact, maybe you should get your business involved. There is, after all, an inter-business Sports Competition also being held on the Sunday, and entries are still being invited.
What does it involve? The competition consists of teams of four people who will compete against each other in six fast moving, easily accessible sports. Each sport will only last for a minute or two per person, so you don’t need to be a Tour de France rider to take part. You just need just four competitive fun-loving people who can represent your company. What are these sports? They are golf, netball, batak, rowing, cycling and table tennis. And it’s just 60 seconds each, so if you’re awful at something your pain won’t last long!
Batak? You’re making these sports up. No, that’s real. It’s a quick fire reaction game. It’s like that game at the funfair where you have to whack the mole with a hammer when it pops up. But different. We’re not making it up- it’s very popular in the Eastern European country of Romanovia.
So what’s all this in aid of then? It’s been organised by the Rotary Club and the charity Sportsaid to raise funds to encourage and support young sports women and men in the Horsham Dis-
So if my business takes part... You’re showing you support our young sports stars, yes.
So how much is it? Not a lot. Participating teams will pay only £25, so do get involved. To apply to be a Business Partner or to find out more about the scheme, please call John Le Rossignol, Horsham Rotary on 01403 754005 or email jleross@attglobal.net.
I’ll ask around at work. Not sure though as there’s a Grand Prix this weekend. Anyway, what else is going on? Okay, if that’s not enough for you, Horsham Park Bowls Club and The Pavilions in the Park will also be offering free Open Day activities throughout the afternoon. Also in the park will be an Active Communities Zone, which gives advice on what’s on offer locally.
So what events are going on in the Pavilions? The Pavilions is celebrating the Open Weekend with their own Open Day from 9.30am – 6pm. All activities are free and include Olympic Island Inflatable (9.30am - 10.30am), and a Synchronised Swimming Taster Session (5 - 6pm) which you’ll need to book in advance on 219200.
And you mentioned It’s a Knockout? I did. For those wanting their sport to be a bit sillier PEACH’s ‘It’s a Knockout’ Zone will offer people the chance to challenge their family and friends in a fun range of games including Crazy Caterpillars, Chicken Run, Pony Hop Racing, Puzzle Mania and Up & Under.
It all sounds tempting... Yes, it does. Should you need to know anymore though, visit the website at www.sparksinthepark.co.uk

The main aims of the group are to facilitate sports, arts and recreational activities for disabled children in typical settings where such activities would take place, such as sports centres, arts centres, schools, cinemas and other community venues. The group is run by parents of disabled children and works in partnership with Horsham District Council, Bluecoats Sports Centre at Christ’s Hospital School, Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre and Steyning Leisure Centre, to enable children who have previously been excluded from such activities to access courses such as trampolining, swimming, gymnastics, dance, drumming, tennis, badminton, and table tennis to name just a few. Their success has enabled up to 90 children, and now
young adults, to keep fit every week and have fun just like their peers...and their siblings and friends can join in too if they want to!
The chairperson, Caroline Johnston, whose middle son Henry (7yrs) has Down’s syndrome, is astounded at how many families are now benefiting from the provision. It is not only the fine and gross motor and coordination skills which children and young people gain but also social skills, communication and numeracy amongst others...and the parents and siblings get to meet each other too for support, which is invaluable. Parent/carers from the group also meet regularly for general support and information. Locations vary depending on speakers and the nature of the support meeting. Funding for extra training and support staff has been sourced through grant applications such as Children
in Need and Sport England but the group are always looking to find new ways of funding and we are, as always, very grateful to any individuals or organisations who would like to fund raise on our behalf. A fundraising Boot Camp will be held at 10.15am on Saturday 28th August in the park to help generate funds - we hope to get some of our children down to the park too for some exercise! Thanks go to Jenny and Fitness in Horsham for setting up this event.
Parents/carers interested in any of the activities of the group should contact Caroline Johnston for more details on carolinemjohnston@btopenworld.com or 0780 329 7368. To take part in the fundraising Boot Camp please contact Jenny Swan of Fitness in Horsham on 07957 891723.

The Loder legacy lives on
15
news
Competition winners... Chris Loder has run Loder Plants, a nursery behind Leonardslee Gardens, for many years On June 30th, Leonardslee Gardens in Lower Beeding opened up to the public for the last time. The beautiful gardens had been owned by the Loder family for more than 120 years and had become a major tourist attraction, welcoming about 75,000 people annually. But now the gardens have a new owner (who has also bought Leonardslee House, sold in the 1980s by Robin Loder to finance the gardens) and there is little indication that the gardens will be opened again for public viewing. But the new owner will have a job on his hands to shake that Loder legacy. Looking out of the back window of his stately
nursery has remained something of a secret shared only amongst specialist plant buyers. Chris was not involved in the running of Leonardslee Gardens, although has probably the best knowledge of plants among the four children. Instead, it was siblings Tom and Mary (who will continue to care for the estate’s wallabies from her garden in Lower Beeding) who assisted their father in the day to day running of the gardens. Chris said: “I think that perhaps I was seen as not being the business one. But we have a lovely set up here and it’s a lovely place to spend time. “It’s quite a specialist range
home and across the fields, the first buildings you come to is a series of 18th century cottages and outbuildings, among the very oldest on the original Leonardslee Estate. This is the home of Loder Plants, run by Robin’s eldest son, Chris, for the last 25 years. Yet through all that time the
so our customers are from all over the country, Ireland and even further afield. It’s not like we’re in competition with the local garden centres. “Most of the people that do visit seem to be more fascinated with our 18th century glass houses, which we’re in the middle of restoring. But I don’t
think that many people in Horsham actually know we exist!” Indeed, the site is rather anonymous. A small blue sign by the roadside can be easily missed, and even on arrival you’re advised to honk your horn so that Chris or one of his small but knowledgeable team are aware of your presence. And now that Leonardslee is closed, you could be forgiven for associating the Loder name with the gardens, and assume the nursery has also closed. Chris said: “I have seen asked several times if we are still open, but we are and I intend that to be the case for many years to come. “A lot of people used to come to Lower Beeding, have a stroll around Leonardslee Gardens and then come here to find out more about what they were looking at. “But we have built up a collection of Leonardslee varieties and even have some that the gardens have lost, so I’m sure we will survive without them.” The nursery has one of the widest ranges of rhododendrons, azaleas, hydrangeas and camellias available in Europe and also stocks a selection of other plants, especially shrubs. Its specialist camellia nursery is stocked with some 270 varieties, of which 45 are autumn flowering Camellia sasanqua types. Loder Plants is located at Market Garden, Cyder Farm, Lower Beeding, and is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Call 01403 891412 for more info

Dragon Boat races, Knepp Castle The Dragon Boat races is a popular fundraising festival held in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice. It used to be held at Tilgate Park in Crawley, but the event has found a stately new home while work is carried out on the Lake. The races will now be held at Knepp Castle, West Grinstead. It’s all thanks to the Burrell family who have offered the historic Lake at their Knepp Castle Estate, for the hospice to host its eighth annual Dragon Boat Festival.
Michael Beasley, organiser from St Catherine’s Hospice, said: ““We’re challenging all local businesses to put down their pens, pick up the paddles and be part of it. Getting a team together is great fun, so make it the year of the dragon for you and your colleagues, while raising much needed funds for your local hospice.” If you want to find our more about how you can take part, log onto www.stch.org.uk or call Michael Beasley on 01293 447357.

Do you or somebody you know need help with some of the things that others take for granted? At Carewise we place our service users first acting in their best interests at all times. We recognise the need for people to retain their independence whilst also feeling supported and cared for. Working closely with local authorities and families we endeavour to provide bespoke care packages designed to make life that little bit easier.
Julia Martin creator of Dramaworks has done it again with another great showcase performance! The Capitol Theatre was the venue, Wedneday 21st of July was the date and on arrival, I was greeted by hoards of parents anxious to get in , find a seat, and be the first to wave at their little star. The audience lights went down and the stage was lit. The air was tense as the parents looked on. First up was the 4-6 year olds from Julia's Saturday morning group. Normally when watching the first performers of any show you can feel a slight nervousness and apprehension amongst the performers; not with this lot, on they came one by one with smiles from ear to ear, booming voices and an air of confidence found only in seasoned stage actors. Their starting performance was a wonderful rendition of selected scenes from Disney's Jungle book, winning their slightly biased audience with ease, even throwing in a couple of comical moments ,adding their own flavour to the perform-
ance. Next on the bill was Roald Dahl's' James and the Giant Peach' starting with a convincing solo of ‘My name is James’ accompanied by some elegant movement from the little girls of the group. The genre continued with scenes from The Twits which brought further belly laughs from the captivated audience. Overall the group proved that a good solid delivery is achieved by a 'we can' attitude as all the individuals involved thrived from each others performances. It seemed the interval came too quickly but just before the break we were enter-
tained by a solo break dancer, busting his moves with his popping and locking, truly a star in the making. With a quick audience change it was time for the 711year olds to do their thing, and do their thing they did, with accurately performed, selected scenes from the popular Bugsy Malone show proving again that at Dramaworks, drama really does work! Overall the evening was a great success giving the children a great experience in performing to a large very proud audience within a theatre environment. Julia Martin and assistant

director Sian Pinder where delighted with the children "the children thoroughly enjoy themselves when performing and that is our main aim" said Julia. Along with her busy schedule, Julia has justs returned from her annual trip to South Africa where she visited some of the projects located at the top of the Drakensburg mountains in the Mabandla region. Julia says “It was a wonderful yet emotional experience, the children have no toys but they make their own fun and are remarkably hardy". Sadly ,as in many parts of Africa 45% of the children suffer from HIV, and have limited opportunities. Julia is passionate about fostering a permanent link between Dramaworks and the children of the region; she is planning future fundraising activities in September. With the funds, Dramaworks will purchase toys and send them to the children to help foster their imaginative development. An advertising Promotion for The Resident

Praising our binmen
It was good to see the positive coverage of our Acorn Plus service in your paper (2nd July) However, I was distinctly unimpressed by the comment underneath the headline. It was unfair and irresponsible of you to describe our staff as “lazy bin men” and to suggest that residents put their bins the wrong way round to force them to undertake unnecessary work. Our refuse and recycling officers work every week of the year, in all weathers from early in the morning, collecting waste and recyclable material from 55,000 households across 200 square miles. Their work is physically demanding and can be hazardous. They provide an essential service that underpins the health and environmental wellbeing of our residents and their communities. I think you owe them
an apology.
Tom Crowley, Chief Executive, Horsham District Council
Editor: Quite right, Tom. I’d like to think our readers appreciate the comment was only made in jest, but our ‘refuse and recycling officers’ do indeed do a sterling job. Sorry for any upset caused.

‘Spook central’ is a flourishing Church Your article "Spook Central" (9th July, Page 4&5) has been brought to my attention. St John's, Coolhurst, was built by my family and is very close to our hearts. You may have noticed that many of us are buried there, including my infant daughter. I mention this as many rumours, which continue to go around, seem to centre on a young girl are often put down to her. The stories of Ghostly goings on there is one that returns from time to time but seems to stem from the time that Coolhurst was occupied by various schools and might be put down to teenage imagination. I make no comment on the "experience" of young Mr Stephen Foster, except to note that he was camping in Private Property without permission and that so called White Figures seen by such people are normally put down to the White Fallow Deer which live freely in the Woods, nor of Mr John Rowell. All I can say is that over the years I have given permission for various bodies interested in such things, in-

cluding the BBC, to observe the Church and area, to try and note any occurrences. None of them have ever been able to see anything. I can also assure you that there is no family lore about anything like this. I would also comment that far from being a "seldom used" used Church, St John's has a flourishing congregation which goes from strength to strength. There is Holy Communion there every Sunday at
8.30am and Evensong at 3.30pm on the second Sunday of each month. These Services are taken by the Vicar of Lower Beeding in whose Parish St John's lies. All are welcome and I can assure you that St John's is a very friendly and happy place.
Mark Scrase-Dickins CMG DL, Doomsday Lane, Horsham I loved the article about ghostly happenings at St John's in Coolhurst but thought your readers might like to know a bit more about the building itself. St John's was financed by a local businessman, Charles
Scrase Dickens (no relationship as far as I'm aware to the famous author) in 1889. For many years it was the church used by St John's private school, Coolham (now a private estate). Charles did, however, give his name to Dickens Way, a road not so far away from his little church. Far from being a seldom used church, as your article suggests, St John's hosts an 8.30am Holy Communion every Sunday morning, which is well attended. For me, its attraction lies in its traditional Evensong held at 3.30pm on the second Sunday of every month. This service is also well attended and music is provided by organist Isobel Richardson, who, like me, attends Holy Trinity Church, Rushams Road, for morning services in between. St John's is a very friendly little church. Don't be put off by the ghostly rumours. Once you get inside, you will be inspired by the simple yet artistic decor and be warmly welcomed by its congregation, many of whom, like me, travel some distance to enjoy its tranquil atmosphere. Peter Tobutt, Fairview, Horsham
Blind to social needs Is it not remarkable that Horsham has a very unique Town Hall in the centre, with two acoustic halls, a history that spans many centuries, a ghost in the form of the genial Dan Roberts, and with a potential to be a place where the community can meet and greet? Is it also not remarkable that a handful of people have been fighting to keep the building for the community, over many years, and during that time to secure the patronage of Julian Lloyd Webber? You can have as many restaurants as you like but if you do not have something to attract people other than restaurants then noth-
ing is going to bring people into your back yard! Music and the arts will do that! That is what the drive is about to open Horsham Town Hall for the community, and that is something that is going to become more and more essential. “In Harmony” was begun by Julian Lloyd Webber to bring music into the community; he said in a recent interview that “In Harmony” was; “a social project rather than a musical project” to “improve communities” and “involve communities.” Why should Horsham be so blind to the social needs around as to refuse to think outside the box and remain with its eyes closed, mouth shut and lid securely down? Robert Mayfield, Blue Flash Music Trust, Horsham.
Editor: But after the lack of interest in the Black Cat music club and Q Art, which both closed, maybe residents aren’t that fussed about the local music and arts scene. Any thoughts on this, readers?

How about fixed menu for Wabi? I have yet to be seduced by the culinary charms of Wabi, partly because I don't have an occasion coming up that justifies what is going to be a pretty hefty expense and partly because I don't want to suffer the ignominy of searching in vain through the menu trying to find the most filling but least expensive dishes. This I believe is the issue with Wabi. Horsham is a prosperous area, and for many people, going out for a meal at the weekend, even during the week is a no-brainer. It's no longer aligned with the celebration of special occasions. With the wonderful Wabi however it's unlikely that sufficient numbers of Horsham's middle market are going to make a spontaneous decision to eat there, and let's face it, many restaurants nowadays rely on the power of spontaneity as opposed to the olden days when we booked a restaurant days in advance to celebrate a milestone. All will be well at Wabi if they can entice sufficient people at the top end of the spending league to come and eat, come back again and recommend
‘A GREAT FAMILY EVENING FOR LESS THAN £35 PER HEAD IS GREAT VALUE’ You can read our review of Wabi, in last week’s edition, online at www.visithorsham.co.uk it to their friends and family. If not, my suggestion is that Wabi launches a fixed-price menu for under £40 a head to pull in the middle market. I'm sure that we can all co-exist merrily under the same roof - people
like myself enjoying their good value fixed-price meal and those for whom spending over £45 on one dish alone is mere pennies! Dee Blick, Irwin Drive, Horsham
Situation is a mess
I would like to write to you in disgust of the amount of dog faeces that seems to be in Horsham. In the past two weeks I have trodden in dog poo three times. Some people say it’s lucky to do such a thing but sadly there is nothing lucky about sitting on my door step at home and using an old twig to flick the muck from my new Ugg boots (before anyone asks, yes, men can wear them). As a dog owner I always pick up my mutt’s plops and luckily for me I own a shop and always have a carrier bag in my pocket just in case this happens. So dedicated I am to picking it up, once I used a £10 note to pick some droppings up as I didn’t want some
poor child falling face first into it and going blind and wondering around like they were in the Day of The Triffids. So please, all dog owners, carry a bag with you at all times. All supermarkets issue bags and it’s a great way of recycling. I do wish the council would install more dog poo bins as I have had to, on a number of occasions, lob the bag wherever as I will happily pick it up but I certainly can’t be seen walking around with poo in a bag. I feel very passionate about this and would be very interested if other people feel the same. John O'Sullivan writes via email
Having booked for a party of six, including a native Japanese, I read with some apprehension the County Times articles and letters of last week. Our booking was for Friday 16th July. Was it going to be an expensive disaster? It certainly was not! The evening was a great success with my son and Japanese daughterin-law acting as our adviser on the very good menu. Our table was upstairs and we found the ambience ideal for an intimate family occasion once they had turned the music down a touch. The
staff were very helpful and the management of the restaurant seemed to be very professional. There were six very healthy appetites and these were so satisfied after our excellent (Japanese daughter in law's word) meal that only two of us could manage a sweet although the others did dip their spoons in as well. How much? Water, soft drinks, wine, many courses and desserts, not to mention a great family evening all for less than £35 a head. I call the whole experience value for money! news Just two weeks ago, gymnast Chris Cranfield was picking up his first major medal, at the Acrobatic Gymnastics 6th World Age Group Competition in Poland. Now, aged 19, he has retired! Chris went out on a high by winning silver at the games in the Mixed Pairs with Kimberley
Hunter. But Chris, who trained at Heathrow Gym Club, has called it a day as he’s off to University in Chichester. Chris, from Mannings Heath, said: “It’s quite hard to explain Acrobatic Gymnastics, but the easiest way is to say it’ like what Spellbound do on Britain’s Got Talent!
“It was great to win silver. I went out not really knowing what to expect but after the qualifying rounds I thought we would have a chance. “That was my first major medal for me, but now I’m retiring. You could say I’m going out on a high!”

Laying out a new look
Traders were far from unanimous in their support for the redesign of East Street, but the construction work is taking shape. the 22 week work programme is scheduled to fin-
ish in the middle of september and is designed to create an improved area for pedestrians in this now thriving area of the town centre. the construction work carried out so far means that slightly more than half of the
new surface is completed. Feedback has been positive with traders, with customers and pedestrians liking the new look. influenced by a number of european designs, east street will see pedestrians and vehicles
sharing the same space in an ‘integrated’ system, with road markings and signs kept to a minimum. because the street is very narrow it has been necessary to close the road so that the contractor, Landbuild, can

A Nostalgic trip
As teenagers, most of us had a poster of a favourite film up on bedroom wall. For me, it was trainspotting and Goodfellas (i’d never seen it. it was free with a magazine). but one member of staff at the capitol made the collection of movie posters his hobby, and he now has many of his personal favourites on display. James simmonds is exhibiting posters from films including My Fair Lady, some Like it hot, carry on films and Airplane in the theatre’s gallery until 31st August. James said: “i’ve always loved the cinema – the atmosphere, the sounds, the smell of popcorn and that sense of anticipation when the lights dim. And then the pearl
& dean adverts with that fantastic theme music. “the art of cinema is often overlooked or not given a second thought. the design, layout and materials have changed dramatically over the years, up until the late 80s posters where simply printed on paper. Now they are glossy, airbrushed, computer generated designs. the posters i’m exhibiting are from the bygone age of british and American musicals and comedies. “i have a soft spot for british caricature-style posters, a popular way to advertise films in the 50s, 60s and early 70s. “i hope this exhibition provides a nostalgic trip down memory lane.”

special olympic reunion
50 years of Horsham Olympic
it all started with this group of young lads, who would win the horsham and district league division 4 title in the club’s first season. 50 years and several hundred players later, Horsham Olympic are pretty much where they were after that first promotion winning season. These days, the club runs two teams, playing in Division 3 North and Division 5 North of the West Sussex Football League respectively. And to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Olympic are organising a reunion event at The Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham. Club chairman Tim Wilkins and lifelong member Mick Langridge are inviting all former players to the event on Saturday, 18th September, at 7pm until late, with music, a licensed bar and of course an evening full of memories.
“the club has and will always hold a special position in horsham football”
the 1960 division 4 champions: roy Jupp, John dennett, clive potter, cyril elmes, mick figg, ray burchell, bob James (captain), John baxter, rich roberts, brian clarke and tony tuesley
Tim said: “Over the last 50 years so many local footballers have at some time during their career played for Olympic. “For many years the club had three teams, plus a junior Herons Olympic team
and Veterans as well. “The club has been run by some marvellous people over the years and has some great history. It should be a fantastic evening with lots of players and many memories.” Mick Langridge, who played from the 1960s up until the 1980s and has been involved with the club ever since, can’t wait to get everyone back together on the 18th. Mick said: “It is quite difficult to get hold of everybody who has played but it is coming together. Keeping the club going for so long has sometimes been very difficult, but it has always held and will always hold a special position in Horsham football.” The club was originally started by Horsham Boys Club leader Jim Hills, who has run a sports shop in Billingshurst for many years. It was based at Hurst Road and known as the Boys Club in 1958, before changing its name two years later to Horsham Olympic. Olympic entered a team in Division 4 and were champions at the first attempt. Tickets cost £7.50 and are available from Mick or Tim on 01403 266474 or 07905 542821.

after months of there being nothing on at the cinema there’s a sudden surge of super cinema smashers. In the next few weeks there really is something for everyone. We have Toy Story 3 for the children, Twilight for the teenagers and Inception for the grown ups. Pixar’s latest and Christopher Nolan’s Inception have both had the critics churning out the hyperboles. Having seen the first two Twilights, you couldn’t pay us to watch Eclipse, but it is reportedly the best of the series so far. Maybe it’s a rare case of a franchise improving film by film. Like Jaws. This time, Bella again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. Well, if you will choose to hang out with such folk... In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the struggle between vampire and werewolf.
tOy stOry 3 and inceptiOn have bOth had critics churning Out hyperbOles With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life. Eclipse is at the Capitol now until 29th July. Inception is the first film by Christopher Nolan since The Dark Knight, which you may recall did more than okay. Dom Cobb (Leo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossibleinception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of special-
ists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. Might be one where you’d be advised against a mid-film toilet break. Inception is showing at the Capitol until 29th July. Then there’s the really big one Toy Story 3, showing in Disney Digital 3D. If Pixar can maintain they’re unbelievable run of form you can assume it’ll be the best animated film ever, until their next one. Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back. As their owner Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in day care where untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice. So, it's all for one and one for all as they join Barbie's counterpart Ken, a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants and a pink, strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear to plan their great escape. Toy Story 3 will be showing at the Capitol until 5th August. It is selling fast so book in advance.

Dodgy knee ends rider’s brave bid “tHE only bitS of mE tHat Don't Hurt arE my fingEr nailS”

Your Local Jeweller & Pawnbroker GOLD & SILVER WANTED New or Scrap Don’t post it Use it to get instant Cash
When two Horsham friends advertised their charity cycle ride as "two fellas and four dodgy knees" they little knew how much they were tempting fate. Just days before they were due to set off on their self-supported ride from John O'Groats to Lands End one of the dodgy knees ended up in hospital making the venture impractical for only one cyclist. However, that cyclist, Andrew Wilson (light blue top), was not prepared to give up the idea entirely. "I didn't want to let down Chestnut Tree House and all the people who had offered sponsorship. It's such a good cause I decided to find a different way of doing the 1,000 miles". That different way involved cycling out from Horsham every day for ten days and aiming for 100 miles each day. Andrew, a personal fitness trainer from Horsham, started on 9th July and by the end of day two he had clocked up 203 miles and 12.5 hours in the saddle despite the high temperatures. "At the moment, the only bits of me that don't hurt are my finger nails" said Andrew at the end of that day. Patrick Curry had accompanied Andrew on day 2 but for the next few days, Andrew was on his own. Day 3 passed uneventfully but Day 4 saw Andrew in severe pain from
his own dodgy knee and his mileage fell to 50. Day 5 dawned and he bounced back with another 100 miles at an average speed of 16.4mph. The bad knee finally stopped hurting for the last 40 miles. "I guess it just gave up nagging me", said Andrew. By now his total mileage was 450, an average of 90 miles a day. Day 6 passed fairly smoothly but on Day 7 the dodgy knee decided enough was enough and Andrew was forced to finish at the end of Day 9, reduced to negotiating his stairs by "bum shuffling"! Despite this, he managed a creditable total of 835 miles, an average of just under 93 miles a day. Andrew had been aiming for 1,000 miles which represents the John O'Groats to Lands End cycle route. This avoids motorways and is therefore longer than the most direct road route which clocks in at 874 miles so Andrew's mileage would have seen him well into Cornwall. As the crow flies the journey is only 603 miles but this involves crossing stretches of Irish Sea! All money raised from sponsorship for this cycling achievement will go to the Chestnut Tree Hospice. Donations can be made via Andrew's page on www.justgiving.com/Andrew-Matt1080ride

Garden springs up Employees from Horsham based health, safety and environmental consultancy Elementus, took a day out to help the local Horsham charity, the Springboard Project. Their task was to paint a mural in their Jubilee Garden with the theme of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. The Springboard Project, in Horsham, is a haven for inclusive play and is a recreation centre for young people with special needs or disabilities and to families with young children.
Richard Hutson-Pope, the branch manager of Brewers, Horsham, supported the team by kindly donating paint for the mural. Nigel Scott-Dickeson, Project Manager at Springboard Project, said: “On behalf of all the families and children who use our Centre, I would like to send our sincere thanks to the team for providing us with another wonderful piece of themed artwork in our garden, which will be enjoyed by all our visitors for years to come - especially in 2012!"
Let’s get wrecked
A group of divers exploring a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea have found bottles containing what is thought to be the oldest drinkable champagne in the world, made in the late 18th century. Experts said the shape of the bottle showed it was from the late 18th century, and the bottle and its contents have been sent to champagne specialists in France to be analysed.
Richard Juhlin, a Swedish champagne specialist, said he believed the champagne was Veuve Cliquot and could cost around $68,000 a bottle.
An Indian man has narrowly avoided death after swallowing a poisonous snake in a wager for just over £1. Zaver Rathod had killed the reptile moments earlier after it bit one of his friends. He then ate the raw snake for a 100 rupee (£1.39) bet after being encouraged by work colleagues, reports The Times of
India. Rathod was soon rushed to hospital suffering with severe nausea and vomiting.

16th Century home in Wiston village A wildflower meadow is the perfect neighbour for Bennetts, a five bedroom farmhouse dating back to the 16th century in the village of Wiston, just outside Steyning. It is understood the arrangement could continue with new owners of Bennetts which is now on the market with Henry Adams (Storrington) for £925,000. Extending to around half an acre, the meadow is accessed directly from Bennetts’ garden and is a haven for wildlife and wildflowers. The blooms change with the seasons, from yellow and white in May to purple in July and dark pink in August, all attracting bees in abundance. The large farmhouse kitchen of Bennetts looks out to the traditional English country garden which has been planned also with wildlife in mind, such as the six buddleias to attract butterflies. With the same attention to detail the house has been lovingly restored, from complete redecoration in keeping with the Grade II listed property to installing the practicalities of central heating (with period radiators in the reception and dining halls) and a new water cylinder. The dining hall has an original inglenook fireplace dating to at least 1673, while through the living room is a later extension which currently serves as a garden room, but could equally be a morning
room or family room. The large triple aspect windows provide plenty of light and an idyllic view of the neighbouring meadow. But none of the character has been lost, rather it has been revealed. The second bedroom has wick marks on the wall beams where night candles would have burned and the twin aspect windows cast a gentle light. The master suite also has twin aspects over the countryside, a dressing room and an ensuite bath and shower
BENNETTS IS SET WITHIN WISTONS ESTATE, WHICH APPEARS IN THE DOOMSDAY BOOK
room. Stairs lead from the landing to the second floor with a perfect arrangement for growing children who want their own space of a study/playroom which leads into the bedroom. Outside, the double garage is formed from a granary barn which apparently used to be over the road, until a previous owner had it taken down and reconstructed, brick by brick, including the granary store itself. Bennetts is set within Wistons Estate, extending to some 6,300 acres, which appears in the Domesday Book and has been owned by the Goring family for around 300 years. As a result, few of the houses locally are privately owned and there is unlikely to be future development in the area.
NAEA reports rising demand
More people appear to be interested in buying a home in the UK, as the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has observed an increase in demand. Figures from the organisation revealed the average branch saw registrations by 279 house hunters in June, compared to 265 the previous month. And the proportion of potential first-time buyers among them remained steady at 21 per cent. The NAEA suggested the rise in stamp duty threshold to £250,000 may be contributing, although president Michael Jones called for more finance to be made available to those hoping to purchase a property. "If the banks ease up on mortgage lending restrictions then with a bit of luck, the summer months will see the sales figure rise in line with demand," he said. The figures follow research from Defaqto showing the availability of discount mortgages has dropped by 72% in the last three years.
“The effect will mean less disposable income through rises in taxation”
Paul Watts, Mortgage Solutions Limited Paul Watts from Mortgage Solutions Limited comments on The Bank of England’s decision to continue their policy of holding the bank base rate at 0.5% for the 17th consecutive month. “Now that the new coalition government have put forward their emergency budget and plans to tackle the public deficit, the effect of these proposals will mean less disposable income through rises in direct and indirect taxation for most people. The Monetary Policy Committee may have felt that raising interest rates at this time would potentially stop what is currently very modest growth in the economy.
The last month or so has continued to see lenders trimming their mortgage rates to prospective borrowers with Moneyfacts reporting the average 2 year fixed rate now standing at 4.51%. Recent lending patterns have suggested that borrowers are increasingly opting for fixed rates over variable deals with more people choosing fixed rates in June 2010. As always the question everyone will want an answer to is - when will interest rates rise? Once again the answer is no-one really knows, from our understanding the opinion currently is that following the announcements concerning public finances and the likely impact that
this is going to have on public sector jobs, incomes interest rates are likely to stay lower for longer, but that does not necessarily mean that rates will not start to creep up slowly!” Paul Watts is a Director of Mortgage Solutions Limited.

Massive demand
Guy Leonard & Co are experiencing a massive demand for rental property in the Horsham, Storrington, Pulborough and surrounding areas with not enough property being available to meet the increasing demand. This is bad news for awaiting tenants as properties are let almost as soon as they come on to
All types of property are required although two bedroom apartments/houses and larger family properties are particularly in short supply. That said it is still vital to choose the correct agent to find you the tenant and manage your property. At the moment you may receive three or four offers from different tenants on the same day
the market but excellent news for landlords as the lack of property pushes up the rental price achievable. A two bedroom modern apartment in Horsham that may have let six months ago for £750pcm could now achieve up to £900pcm says Guy Leonard & Co. If you are considering letting your property or have just had your tenant vacate there is no better time to put it on the market.
and it is important to ensure your agent acts in your best interests and finds you the best tenant to suit your requirements. Guy Leonard & Co have been letting property now for over 15 years and employ highly experienced staff and pride themselves on their efficient and friendly service. Cycling veteran offers tips on European trip Matt Searle, a director of Horsham estate agents Brock Taylor, has met ‘the nation’s favourite PedalPowered Pensioner’ ahead of a European charity bike ride. Eighty-one year old Edward Enfield is a veteran of European cycling trips, having pedalled his way across many countries including France, Ireland and Greece. He met Matt to pass on some advice and tips on cycling long distances through foreign countries. Edward, who is also the father of comedian Harry Enfield, has written several books following his experiences and his most recent ‘Dawdling by the Danube’ details his journeys in Bavaria and Poland. Matt is about to depart the UK for Spain where he will start a sponsored bike ride back to England to raise money for the Brock Taylor Community Fund.
The fund, which Matt set up, supports local charities and organisations in the Horsham District. The pair spent over an hour discussing Matt’s trip with Edward advising him on the best way to make the trip
and the factors he needs to consider regarding long distance cycling. Edward and Matt met outside The Cricketers Arms pub in Wisborough Green – a popular spot for cyclists who are out for a ride in West Sussex.
Matt Searle said: “It was an honour to meet Edward and draw on his vast experience. “His stamina is amazing and I will certainly be packing a couple of his books for my journey to give me further inspiration.”

New firm a breath of fresh air
An advertising promotion for The Resident Ian Munslow, Tracey Bailey and Elaine Gray are launching a brand new property services company offering a breath of fresh air to the Horsham property market. Ian Munslow has lived in Horsham for 12 years and moved to the area with his wife and children. He said: “We chose Horsham based on its excellent schools and general
family feel” Ian brings with him a wealth of knowledge in the property market after spending the last 25 years in the industry, he started his career as an estate agent and progressed through the ranks to become the sales and marketing director for a multi million pound development company, he and his partners aim to deliver a pro-
fessional, personal and honest service to the Horsham residents wishing to sell their most precious asset – their home. At Munslow Bailey Gray you can be assured of a one stop service with all the trimmings, not only will Ian visit your property and give you a valuation based on the current market, he will also guide you
through the perils and pitfalls of selling a property in today’s climate, along with this he will introduce you to the company’s House Doctor specialist, Tracey Bailey. Tracey will give you a free consultation and advise you the best way to get your property in the right shape for the open market providing a range of suggestions to help you sell your home. Tracey, also a local resident, comes from an interior design background and her experience with new build properties within London and the South East will provide a valuable additional service to Munslow Bailey Gray, which sets it apart from other estate agents. “It is my aim to offer clients the best advice on how to adjust the look of your home to assure you get the best price” explains Tracey “I feel that in many cases properties are presented to the market before they are ready “. When your property is ready to be launched to the market you will experience the continued excellent service MBG can offer you, including Rightmove the country’s leading property website, property brochure,
accompanied viewings, viewing feedback and advice on offers. Once you have achieved the best price for your property the service doesn’t stop there, the team will progress your sale through to completion, with rigid chain management and weekly updates making sure there is no breakdown in communication which so often can result in delays and at worst a fall through. Munslow Bailey Gray offer a wide range of property services and along with a Sales department they have a Lettings department run by Elaine Gray. Elaine is another talented addition to the team and has experienced many changing property markets both in sales and lettings. With 20 years in the industry Elaine is looking forward to providing a second to none fully managed lettings service . “We at MBG are all local residents and have been through the buying, renting and selling process many times, and at times the service received has not met our expectations,” she continues. “I believe we can offer a open and honest service based
on our experiences both in the business and on the other side of the fence, that the residents of Horsham will find refreshing whilst challenging the stereotyped ‘Estate Agent’ image.” In addition MBG offer an extended range of services through their associates including financial advice, proand fessional surveys valuations (RICS), property maintenance including general decorations and floor coverings, planning advice and management, land & new homes and even a full building service if required! From The Met to let Sophie Weston has now been running her property lettings company Weston Lettings for just over a year and is proud to report how successful it has become. Originally from Surrey, Sophie spent 17 years working for the Metropolitan Police, qualifying as an inspector. She policed the diverse and challenging areas of Brixton and Streatham in South London. When the time came to start a family the decision was made to move out of the area and find a quiet spot in the country. Sophie and her husband James decided to settle in the beautiful village of Warnham after falling in love with a charming cottage they spotted in the paper. “When I saw the advert I said to my hus-

As time passed the Westons were blessed with two daughters and Sophie made a decision to take a career break and stay at home to look after the children. Inevitably finances became stretched and they decided to let their property out and rent a smaller more financially manageable property for themselves. It was then that Sophie, disappointed with the service they had received from the Letting Agents, said to her husband, “I can do better than that”. It was then that Weston Lettings was born.

Green and Mean Vauxhall Insignia
Vauxhall has made sizeable reductions in C02s and fuel consumption to key models in its European Car of the Year-winning Insignia range, meaning that customers now benefit from combined emissions as low as 129g/km. While changes to the Insignia’s 2.0-litre Turbo engine have yielded a near-five per cent drop in emissions on the Sports Tourer, thanks to improvements made to the engine’s engine management system, each of the Insignia’s 2.0-litre diesel powerplants also become greener The Insignia ecoFLEX’s emissions have now dropped from 136g/km to just 129g/km, with a corresponding improvement in fuel consumption from 54.3mpg combined, to 57.6mpg. This means that not only is the ecoFLEX cheaper to run, but since it falls under 130g/km, customers will pay no VED for the first year. Insignia Sports Tourer ecoFLEX drivers also gain, with added efficiency gains meaning a drop in C02to 134g/km and 55.4mpg. Despite the significant improvements in efficiency and refinement, the latest Insignias’ on the road prices remains the same and all revised models can be ordered from today.
Ahead of the field Vauxhall has sold more cars than any other UK manufacturer in June, with a total of 30,190 vehicles registered last month, according to figures published by the SMMT today. The Astra was also Britain’s best-selling range in June - overall and for fleet - bringing to a close a hugely successful first half-year for the Luton company. The first six months of 2010 also revealed the sustained popularity of the Astra range, which conquered the hotly contested retail sales battle in its segment between January 1st and June 30th. Fighting off tough competition from both the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, the Astra range – which includes the UK-built Estate and new 5-door hatch – sold a total of 14,415 cars. “This is great news for us,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Managing Director. “Product is king for UK buyers and our June sales prove that we’re ticking all the right boxes with customers when it comes to the quality, performance and value of our cars. “The new Astra, for example, is perceived as a premium product in its segment, but one that still offers great value for money. The fact that

we’re building it in Britain is the icing on the cake.” But the Astra wasn’t the only top-seller from Vauxhall in the first half of this year. The ever-popular Zafira was revealed as the UK’s best-selling compact MPV overall, with a total of 15,392 sales since January. With its clever Flex7 seating system, wide range of efficient engines and trims, the Zafira has become a benchmark for quality and versatility in its class, with a total of over 420,000 sold since the orig-
inal model was launched in 1998. The Insignia was another segment leader after the first six months of the year. Fighting off stiff competition from the BMW 3Series, 15,575 cars were sold, reinforcing its position as a market leader for design, technology and driveability. The new Astra range receives a further boost later this year when the Sports Tourer model

Ayres fires 120 finish for Kings
The final week of league action in the first half of the season, was littered with postponements, as Kings Arms B, Windmill & the Star all cancelled their matches. Only one game in the A Division took place, with Sussex Barn moving back into 2nd place following their 8-1 tanning of the Tanners Arms. Both the previous top two leaders Plough Hounds fell foul of a cancelled game, while BBHVC had their bye, and drop down to third. The B Division completed a full week of fixtures, leaders Steyning CC stay top after beating the Red Lyon 6-3, but the Rising Sun close in on them by winning 7-2 over their stable mates Rising Sun B, to lie just 3points adrifts. The Anchor moved into a play-off place after beating the Bear Inn 6-3. Kings Arms’ Tony Ayres struck a fine 120 checkout, the league's only highlight, to help the C Division leaders beat the Plough 7-2, but Roffey Club's 9-0 tonking of the Railway Colts propels them up to 2nd, but still remain a massive 12points adrift of the leaders. helley Arms had their bye, while Storrington Club's game with the Star was cancelled. l There’s a doubles competition at The Roffey Club in 22nd july. Entry on the night is £2 per pair. Only players that competed in at least two league games can compete. Players to register by 8pm.

Jolyon Palmer still leads the championship by five points, but rival Dean Stoneman will be hurting after his penalty
Controversial clash between title rivals Jolyon Palmer endured a nightmare weekend at Brands Hatch, yet maintained his championship lead after main rival Dean Stoneman was penalised for a crash that took out the Southwater ace. Stoneman romped home to an emphatic eight second victory in the opening race at Brands Hatch, closing to within five points of Palmer, who could only finish eighth. But it was the second race on Sunday that was mired in controversy. Philipp Eng claimed his third vic-
tory of the season at Brands Hatch but it will be remembered for a clash between championship rivals Jolyon Palmer and Dean Stoneman, which has added extra spice in the race for the title. Jolyon Palmer had come from fifth to third, with Dean Stoneman also moving up from seventh on the grid into fifth. Gladdis and Stoneman traded places on two occasions during the opening lap, with Stoneman eventually getting into fourth around the outside at Surtees. The key moment of the race hap-

pened on lap four when Stoneman tried to dive down the inside of Palmer at Paddock Hill Bend. As Stoneman drew alongside, the pair's front wheels touched and Palmer was fired off into the gravel and out of the race. Stoneman continued but the incident allowed Tom Gladdis to slip by and back into third, which became second at the halfway stage of the race as race leader Kazim Vasiliauskas retired with gearbox issues. Stoneman moved into a ten point championship lead but was later
given a 20 second penalty for causing the crash, so Jolyon retains his five point lead in the F2 championship. It will no doubt be a hot topic among the drivers, especially as it happened on a course that belongs to Motorsport Vision, whose chief executive is Jolyon’s dad, Jonathan. The same company runs the F2 championship. Conspiracy theories aside though, there was no way Stoneman was going to make that turn without hitting Palmer. So it’s shaping up nicely!
Horsham hit back with deadly duo’s fast bowling
Horsham Under-16s ran out comfortable winners by 50 runs in the Identilam Sussex cricket league final versus Horley. On a bright sunny day at Horsham, the home team won the toss, elected to bat and went about setting an imposing victory target of 169. After two early strikes by Horley leaving Horsham at 12 for 2, they recovered well with excellent middle order batting from James Newland 46*, Matt Bidlake 30* and James Round
30* getting to 168-9 after 25 overs. Horley were rocked back by the express left-arm pace duo of Newland (3-15) and Tom Beck (2-16) leaving the innings in a bad way at 25 for 5. Micahel Thomas salvaged some pride with 28 and hard hitting at the death by R.Waddington 29 saw them pass 100 but still fall well short on 118 all out. Both teams had qualified for the Final by winning their respective divisions. Horsham won all 9 league matches in the
West division with Ben Farmer the star batsman scoring 201 aggregate runs without being dismissed once. There were good contributions also from Mike Stocker (185) and James Newland (164). In the wickets was Matt Laker aggregate 9-59, Matt Bidlake 13-65 and Tom Beck 16-144. The IDL League trophy was presented to Horsham Captain Mike Stocker by David Horsman, Life Vice President of the Identilam league.

new boys amongst the goals for Maggs pictures by John lines
it’s been a busy summer for horsham boss John Maggs. Defender Anthony Acheampong has left Gorings Mead. He made 80 appearances for the Hornets after signing from Cardiff City in October 2008, playing at either fullback or centre-half, but has announced plans to take up an offer 'closer to home'. An always imposing presence on the pitch, John Maggs pays tribute to “one of the most respectful people I've ever known in the game.” His departure came after the departure of Captain Sam Page to Sutton United, and was followed by teenage winger Tony Nwachukwu being released by the club at his own request. John Maggs has though, left the door open for the popular winger to return. But it’s not all bad news. In has come former Brentford utility man Jay Lovett, as well as Worthing club
“we looked in good shape, the boys were fit and up for it” Captain Paul Kennett. And Horsham got off to a winning start in their pre-season campaign as they travelled to Burgess Hill on Saturday. Both Jay Lovett and Paul Kennett were named in the starting line-up that still had familiar faces from last season, with Player of the Year Ben Andrews forming a new central defensive partnership with Jamal King, who is on trial. It was a slow start to the game as the players were trying to regain much needed match fitness for the new campaign. The experienced Lovett added a touch of class to proceedings as the former Brentford man looked a cut above the rest. On this evidence, he is going to be a key man for Hor-

sham and another fantastic signing by Maggs. Horsham took the lead just before the half hour mark, when a cross from Jack Page was bundled down by another debutant, Kennett, and stroked past the goalkeeper with ease. Pat Harding raced away from the defence and slotted into the bottom corner of the net for Horsham’s second, before Dean Wright added a third. They were unable to keep a clean sheet as they conceded a penalty in injury time that was perfectly placed by Hillians skipper Steve Harper, who beat Zawadski's despairing dive. "It couldn't have gone better for us," reflected Maggs after the match. "We won't go overboard be-
cause, at the end of the day, the important thing about these games is to get the lads back out on the pitch but we looked in good shape, the boys were fit and up for it. l A contentious last minute strike from Sam Crabb denied the Hornets another win in a keenly contested meeting at Worthing's Woodside Road on Tuesday night. With his side trailing 2-1 to a brace from Pat Harding, the Town striker took aim from 25 yards and arrowed in a shot that struck the frame of Kieron Thorp's goal before crashing back into play, only for the linesman to rule that the ball had crossed the line. The validity of the goal may have been in dispute but there was no question that Eastbourne deserved a share of the spoils after an energetic display that gave John Maggs' men a combative test on a warm summer's evening on the coast.

Nail-biting battle in Bronco league
pMw Communications Mustang league: a's 13 v yankees 10 The Mustang A's held off a late Yankee rally to win 13-10. Oliver Hepburn hit a pair of doubles and drove in four runs to lead the A's offense. yankees 8 v Mets 16
slinfold Country Club bronco league: redsox 6 v Mets 15 It was a good game with friendly rivalry and banter between the teams. Whilst the Redsox battled to the last innings they were unable to break the winning streak of the Mets. There was outstanding pitching from Jared Cox from the Red Sox striking out three in two innings of work. Caleb Pineada started the game for the Mets striking out 5 in two innings and Sam Boylett closed the door with a solid performance pitching and at the plate. Joseph Aylett was 2 for 2 at the plate. yankees 8 v a's 9 In a nail bighting battle between two outstanding teams the A’s prevailed scoring two runs in the top half of the last inning and holding the Yankees off. The game started when the Yankees came out of the blocks scoring 5 runs. With fine pitching performances by Dan Cannons and James Casey backed up by solid defence by the Yankees by Calum Budd and 2 double plays the Yankees probably deserved better. Outstanding performances from Tyler Burnie at the bat and great pitching from Will Anderson stood out for the A’s whom squeaked past the Yankees to maintain a tie with the Mets for the league title. the outdoor room pinto league a’s 10 v yankees 10

Horsham beat Bramley on Wednesday, July 14th in what was a close game throughout. Horsham ended up winning by two shots thanks to top rink of Tony Bacot, Vic Waters and skip Pam Venn (+10) and Mike Power (+4). The following evening, Horsham did the double over Horsham Park in the Border League, taking all 10 points on offer. However, it was a very close game, with maximum points being gained on the last end of 2 of the 3 rinks. Mike Bright’s rink won at a canter, but Paul Jolliffe picked up 4 shots on the last end, having trailed most of the game and Roy Smith managed to hang on to a one shot win. Friday 16th July was a red letter day for Horsham Ladies, as Janet Puffett defeated Helena Mace from Horsham Park in the zone final of the Sussex Women’s 4-wood unbadged competition. A very close game was finally won by 21 shots to 19. Janet will now be in the semi-finals at Haywards Heath on Friday 20th August. A win away to Burgess Hill on Saturday topped a very successful week for Horsham. Going in for tea with the overall scores level, Horsham then pulled away, having learnt the intricacies of the green and nullified the home advantage. Top rink was Robbie Calder, Beryl Watson, Tony Venn and skip Mike Power (+13), ably supported by George Cooper (+10).
Comptons Tennis Club in Lower Beeding picked up a number of new members during an Open Day held on Sunday. It’s been a good summer for the club as a number of successful initiatives and perhaps even a little bit of Murray Mania has helped the club increase its membership. The club’s head tennis professional Scott Wakefield said: “It was

a good event for us as we saw some new faces and a few people signed up to our adult beginners, or rusty racquets, classes on a Thursday night (£5 per session for non members). “I have been here for about 18 months now and numbers are certainly up. Of course, Murray helps although it’s a shame he couldn’t get past Nadal at Wimbledon. All
exposure of tennis is a good thing for us. “People ask me what happens in the winter, but we have floodlights up here so you just put a tracksuit on and get on with it!” The club would like to thanks several local firms for sponsoring the event, including Panino Cafe, Church’s Performance Cars, Cape Scarlett, Acupuncture and Herbs
(Horsham branch), The Plough, Stepping Stones pre-school, Beauty Secrets, J. Pinfold Building Contractor, Wabi and Jim Hills Sports. Ymca seek local talent
Images by Chris Woolgar
Neil Vanson and phil ‘fitzy’ fitzgerald are looking to form a successful Horsham Ymca under-18s team. it may surprise you that Horsham Ymca currently does not have a reserve team, despite enjoying one of its best finishes in division one South of the ryman league last season. But two of the club’s former players are hoping they can provide suitable support to the first team with the foundation of a new Under-18 team at YMCA. Phil Fitzgerald, who spent 11 years as a player at Gorings Mead, will be managing the team, ably assisted by

another former player, Neil Vanson, who played in the youth set up at Horsham FC before playing for the senior squad at YMCA. But, having set up at a time when most teams have already started training, the duo has some catching up to do in terms of preparation. And they also have a shortage of players. Phil said: “At the moment we’re two months behind where we should be, but we are ready to train and we have the facilities. “It would be quite easy for us to use
our contacts and rope in players from Surrey, South London, or wherever, but we don’t want to do that. We want to attract the best of local talent. “There’s a great opportunity here. Under Colin Jenkinson , the YMCA first team is a very young squad and so it makes it ideal to have an Under 18 team that can act as a feeder squad. It makes the transition into County football easier.” Neil added: “That’s what we’re about really, building a local club with local roots. Too many clubs have gone the other way, getting in players from further afield, but we want the best young players to be here with us and build a team the town can be proud of.” YMCA Under-18s will play against Horsham Youth Under-18s in the Ryman Youth League. Training will be held every Tuesday at 7pm (meet at YMCA’s ground, training in Horsham Park) and matches will take place on Thursday. The team’s home pitch will be Broadbridge Heath Stadium, as Horsham Youth use YMCA’s pitch as the two teams are currently sharing the Gorings Mead ground. For information on joining Horsham YMCA Under-18s call Phil Fitzgerald on 07793 565538.
