A teacher from a Horsham school is almost a third of the way through an extraordinary challenge – 50 marathons in 50 days. John Dwyer, who teaches geography at Farlington School, is today (Friday) running the 16th marathon on his epic

journey of more than 1,300 miles from the Coliseum in Rome to Trafalgar Square, London. Mr Dwyer, 35, is raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and in memory of friend Rob Gauntlett, 21, who died in a climbing accident in the French Alps two years ago. The marathon distance is 26 miles, 385 yards, and many of the early stages have been mountainous. Mr Dwyer said: “It has been a massive challenge so far, with 40-degree temperatures, muscle strains and blisters.

“Despite this, I am enjoying the challenge. The people, the places and the support from home have been terrific. Donations for Marie Curie Cancer Care make every step worthwhile.” On his blog at www.runhomefromrome. weebly.com, he said of the 14th marathon on Wednesday: “We left our budget hotel in Parma at 5.45am, having loaded up the car, a routine we have become very familiar with over the last fortnight.

New record at Sparks in the Park Record number of visitors flock to Horsham’s Summer spectacular a year before the London Olympics The sun came out in Horsham Park as 15,000 people enjoyed sporting and cultural entertainment, in keeping with the Olympic themes of sustainable sporting participation and the Cultural Olympiad. Entertainment included have-a-go sports such as the Set4Success Youth Sports Challenge, live music and dance on the community stage, circus skills, samba and flag-making workshops, and children’s entertainers. A funfair opened on Sunday morning to give free rides to 200 special needs children and their families. Sasha Kindred, one of Britain’s most successful Paralympic swimmers, met youngsters in the morning before supporting the Set4Success Youth Sports Challenge in the afternoon. There were also free stalls and activities from attractions including Amberley Museum, Warnham Local Nature Reserve and charities brought together by the Rotary Club of Horsham. Some parents commented that their children were active in the Sports Zone for hours, with tennis, crazy catch, space hoppers and athletics proving particularly popular. Olivia Edwards-Cox, who designed Horsham’s Olympic mascot when she was six, met Ringo after seeing her vision of the dragon come to life. Sarah Jane Honeywell from BBC CBeebies’ Mighty Mites entertained excited youngsters from the main stage, while children’s TV presenter Dave Benson Phillips awarded Set4Success prizes. Millais School won the competitions for U13 and U15 girls, The Forest School won the U13 boys and Tanbridge House School the U15 boys. All winners received a cup and £200 for their school, while winners and runners-up received medals. The Shout Out Carnival procession, involving hundreds of local children and adults, provided a spectacular finale.

Organised by Horsham District Council, the carnival focused on inclusivity and young people aged 10 to 18. Schoolchildren, Guides and people with special needs played a major role in the Blue Touch Paper (BTP) project, looking at ways in which the carnival could be made more accessible and inclusive. The result was a costume which incorporated the designs, ideas and aspirations of people involved in the BTP Project, particularly the Strawford Centre in Horsham. Most of this work has been groundbreaking, with leading carnival artists working alongside disability experts to examine the processes needed to make carnival truly inclusive.

Cllr Jonathan Chowen, district council Cabinet member, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the success of Sparks in the Park. “It was a treat to see thousands of people in the park enjoying such a wide range of entertainment in the sunshine. “With so many different sporting and cultural opportunities on offer, I think we proved that sports and culture are a great combination and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. “In these difficult financial times, events such as this are vital in supporting local businesses, creating opportunities for people to enjoy sports and arts, and boosting community spirit.”

Three heroes help cancer charities Continued from Page 1 “Leaving the busy A-road which heads towards Milan, we turned north onto a fantastic B-road. With cool temperatures and a clear blue sky, the first couple of hours of running were really enjoyable. “This region (Lombardy) is flat and agricultural and is famous for the production of Parmesan cheese. We passed numerous farms and my legs felt pretty good for the duration of the run. “We found a little campsite close to the end point of today’s marathon and spent an (exhausting) hour pitching our tent.

“After a brief siesta we checked out the historical centre of Cremona and we are heading back for a barbecue with the hungry campsite mosquitoes. “I need to find some ice for my right calf, which is sore. Hannah’s support continues to be absolutely unbelievable and I simply could not do this without such super help. “A huge thank you once again for all the marvellous messages and donations. I feel quite humbled by all the support we are receiving.” A 20-year-old man from Horsham has finished a three-day, 185-mile cycle ride from London to Paris, raising £800 for the Breast Cancer Campaign. Simon Legg with daughter Alys

Student Chris Rippin was sponsored by Leaders, the local letting specialists, who employ his dad Mark as a property inspector at their Horsham branch. Mr Rippin said: “I had never done a ride of this kind before but have wanted to try a physical challenge like this for a long time. “The ride was difficult, but I had trained hard beforehand and was well prepared. It was a fantastic sense of achievement arriving at the Eiffel Tower at the end of the third day knowing I’d completed it. “I’d like to thank Leaders and everyone who has supported me. I know the charity will put the money I have raised to very good use.” Kathy Taylor, senior branch manager for Leaders, said: “Congratulations to Chris on his achievement. We were delighted to lend our support to this worthy cause. “As a long-established company with a large number of employees, landlords and tenants in the area, we feel involved with the community

and like to contribute by supporting local projects, charities, sports teams, schools and individual initiatives such as this.” Big-hearted schoolgirl Alys Legg has pooled resources with her dad to help him compete for a once-in-alifetime challenge. Simon Legg, 42, from Mannings Heath, was this week joining 40 swimmers in Brighton, competing for just two public places in The Swim. The winners will swim across the Irish Sea in a relay with a shoal of celebrities, including Sir Richard Branson, Ronan Keating and Jenny Frost, in a bid to raise £1 million for Cancer Research UK. Alys, eight, spurred on her dad by swimming with him in all of his training sessions. Mr Legg needed to raise £100 for Cancer Research UK to be eligible for the trials – and thanks to Alys’ dedication, he smashed the target by more than £500. Mr Legg said: “Alys really kept me on my toes with the training. She always got to choose the number of

lengths we did and she made sure I kept them up. “She’s the one who really motivated me, when I thought it would be the other way around.” Alys, who attends Holy Trinity School, Lower Beeding, wanted to help her dad make waves with the charity challenge after both of her grandmas were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009.

Company’s 999 rescue mission Five young men are driving to Mongolia in an old ambulance, partly thanks to the generosity of a local business. Ashley Dale, Luke Gowers and Max Stocker, all 21, Alex Garrow and Chris Pearce, both 20, are almost a week into a five-week, 10,000-mile journey through 15 countries. Their trek is in aid of the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation, a charity which looks after children who have often been given a rough hand in life in Mongolia and Vietnam.

will be taking ‘oneTheyof our ‘sold’ boards with them ’

But it almost didn’t happen. Oil spewed over the road between Southwater and Horsham when the fuel pump and inlet manifold gasket failed on a test run. The repair cost £1,400, thanks to a large discount from Crawley Down Renault, and Brock Taylor stepped in with a much-needed donation of £500. Mr Stocker said: “Until about Tuesday (last week), it was looking like we wouldn’t be able to go, but we are so grateful to Brock Taylor and everyone else who has helped us.” Peter Maskell, a director at Brock Taylor, said: “It seems a good and interesting idea, something a little bit different and a worthwhile cause. “They will be taking one of our ‘sold’ boards with them, so they can take pictures outside some very interesting properties all the way to Mongolia.”

The route from Goodwood last weekend includes France, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, where the Ger Village houses abandoned or homeless children. Mr Pearce said: “Having heard about it through a worried mother whose son was doing the rally last year, we knew this was a trip we just had to do. “We will be driving across deserts, up mountain ranges and on roads ranging from bad to non-existent, all with no support crew. “We wanted to take a vehicle that

would leave a longer-lasting value to Mongolia. An ex-service ambulance can be used to provide crucial medical assistance in the local community. “The level of primary care is extremely basic in Mongolia, with hospitals being short of equipment and medicines. Ambulances are few and extremely far between and in most cases are old Russian military vehicles, ill-equipped for saving lives. “After seeing the fantastic work they do and the effects on children’s lives, we wanted to back the charity with everything we could before the event. “Once we get to Mongolia, we will be handing over the ambulance for

long-term service and visiting the Ger Village to see where our fundraising success will be used.” Mr Pearce is from Billingshurst and attended The Weald School. The others live in Horsham and attended The Forest School. The quintet has raised about £1,800 for the charity so far. Visit www.underthefog.co.uk

Man stabbed Three men have been arrested after a serious assault in the Pavilions leisure centre car park, Horsham, at 2.20am on Saturday. A 29-year-old local man, who was walking home from a nearby club, suffered stab wounds to the body, serious head injuries consistent with punching and kicking, and arm and leg fractures. He was treated at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening. Three men from Horsham, aged 19, 20 and 22, were arrested late on Saturday and in the early hours of Sunday. They have been bailed until October 6 while police enquiries continue. West Sussex County Council will provide information to help schools who apply to the government for academy status. Cllr Peter Griffiths, council Cabinet member for education and schools, said: “Our role will be to do all we can to assist schools to make informed decisions about academy status in the best interests of their pupils. “We also want to ensure that parents and carers are consulted and informed as part of the conversion process. “The close collaboration and cooperation between schools and local authority, that has been so successful over many years, will be maintained. “The county council will play a key role in facilitating development of the culture and conditions for a successful transfer to academy status, including a package of advice and support. “Although we would like to see our maintained schools apply for academy status, we have stressed this is a decision for schools to take. I want to make it clear the relationship with those that decide not to convert will remain completely unchanged.”

Police chopper and dogs help tee up arrests Police have been praised after catching three youths who took a buggy and drove it around a golf course shortly before midnight. The Sussex Police helicopter, a police dog unit and other police were deployed as the so-called joyriders caused minor damage by tearing through bunkers and performing doughnuts on fairways at West Chiltington Golf Club. Three young men, aged 17 and 18, were stopped in a car soon afterwards and later cautioned for taking with consent. Martin Ormrod, director and coowner of the golf club, said: “The response from the police was fantastic. I couldn’t fault them one bit. They were absolutely brilliant, out of this world. “I was initially disappointed with the decision to give them a caution and I still don’t know who they are because they’re not being taken to court. But I’m hoping word gets around that it’s not something they can get off with scott-free. “Apparently they were very remorseful at the police station, but I suppose they would be wouldn’t they. I don’t know why they were taking a buggy out when they’ve got a sports car.” Another buggy was stolen from West Chiltington Golf Club about a month earlier, but Mr Ormrod does not believe this to be connected with the latest incident.

Drama at Collyer’s CSI

Prudence Nash, Jessica Mok and Spencer Phillips with magistrate Mary Hamilton

Collyer’s students got a taste for crime scene investigation in a twoday mock event at the college and Horsham Magistrates’ Court. A crime scene was staged, allowing A-level law students to work in defence and prosecution teams before a mock trial in front of magistrate Mary Hamilton. She said: “The students worked particularly hard in their legal teams and I was very impressed with how well they prepared and the quality of the performance. Presenting in court is extremely difficult and I felt they all did brilliantly.” Students adopted the roles of legal teams, court usher and the jury, while others watched from the public gallery. The defendant was played by

volunteer Simon Packham, who appeared as a similar character in ITV’s The Bill. A host of top professionals also helped the students to organise their cases and give the event further authenticity.

The quality of the ‘cases put forward was outstanding ’

These included PC Keith Beckley, KPMG’s Simon Bush, law undergraduate George Woodhouse and private investigator Michael Colacicco. Steve Nicholls, vice-principal of the college, said: “Collyer’s has worked closely with Madeleine Mills and her brilliant team at Education Business Partnership to put on this superb annual event. “Collyer’s CSI has gone from strength to strength over the years and Madeleine’s outstanding work has undoubtedly helped make this possible.” Helen Mayer-Dean, head of law at Collyer’s, said: “The trial was gripping. The quality of the legal cases put forward was outstanding. The students are a credit to themselves and a credit to Collyer’s. “We would like to thank Mary Hamilton, Horsham Magistrates’ Court, Education Business Partnership and all of our volunteers for their superb support. Events like Collyer’s CSI are what education is all about.”

News in Brief Drink-driving case A man has been banned from driving for 16 months after crashing into the garage of a house in Comptons Lane, Horsham, on July 12. A breath test showed Amar Jogia, 24, of Oakhill Road, Horsham, was more than double the legal limit for alcohol. Jogia, who admitted drink-driving, was also fined £500 by Crawley magistrates, with £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Touch rugby Horsham Rugby Club will hold a touch rugby tournament tomorrow (Saturday), largely in aid of Wooden Spoon, a charity helping disadvantaged children. A small fraction of the money raised will help pay for a new roof at the club. The minis and juniors will start playing at midday, with teams selected on the day and no charge to take part. The main competition, costing £10 to enter, is aimed at 16 and overs. Teams have already been formed, but bring your kit for a chance to join a team low on numbers. Every player will get a free pair of Wooden Spoon socks. Event organiser Giles Barber said: “In the past we have had teams in fancy dress (last year we had pirates, chefs etc), all-female teams (Tagwags) and a team studded with the best fair players in the county (Multiple Scoregasms).” The day will include a barbecue, bouncy castle and music.

Paintball fundraiser Members of the public, business owners and sportspeople from Horsham district and beyond took part in a charity paintball event at Holmbush Paintball, near Crawley. Help for Heroes is £2,222 better off from the event entry fees and donations.

Why Hayley has the filly factor Hayley Moore, from Lower Beeding, has won a nationwide competition to become Britain’s first female racing commentator. The Filly Factor was launched by lovetheraces.com to find a suitable female voice of racing. Hayley, 23, fought off fierce opposition from London-based Rachel Casey to win £2,500 and a place on the racing industry’s prestigious commentary training course. The pair took it in turns to commentate on four live races at Ascot, allowing At the Races viewers and an on-course crowd of 20,000 to choose the winner by text. Hayley gained 60 per cent of the votes and will start the course in January next year. When she finishes it in September, a committee will decide if she is worth a place on the professional commentators roster for 2013. Hayley is the daughter of legendary racehorse trainer Gary Moore

and the sister of former champion jockey Ryan, winner of the 2010 Epsom Derby. Having previously embarked on a career in broadcasting, she reverted back to horses a year ago, works full-time for her father at Cisswood House Stables and competes on the amateur jockey circuit. Hayley said: “I’m absolutely delighted. I’m really looking forward to joining the commentary training course and I hope to be back at Ascot calling races as a professional one day. “I had a nice finish to the sprint race. My brother was riding in the race and he just got his horse up in front, so it was nice to call him home. “Rachel had a horrible finish to call in the third race, with six horses in contention coming down to the line, spread across the course. It was really difficult to see where the winner was coming from, but she did a

fantastic job.” Racing commentator Lee McKenzie said: “There is absolutely no reason why women can’t commentate professionally and this competition has been a breakthrough for female race-callers. I sincerely hope we’ll see a professional female commentator.”

Amy Sherman, of lovetheraces. com, said: “Hayley and Rachel were both excellent competitors, so many congratulations to them both. “We’ve had a really positive response to the competition, which has shown there is female race-calling talent out there.”

Councillors are doing their level best How can we reduce delays near the level crossing in Billingshurst? That was the question considered by councillors. They have been seeking a solution to the extra delays, disruption, noise, traffic and pollution some say has been caused by changes to Southern Railway’s timetable. A working group acknowledged that Billingshurst station and the surrounding area was notoriously busy as a result of several existing factors.

For example, the Tesco Express store next to the station has limited parking and receives deliveries at peak times. The station is surrounded by a busy residential area, with The Weald School nearby too. A district council spokesman said: “Solutions to relieve congestion, such as extra parking, were discussed. Tesco has agreed to review its delivery arrangements to see if deliveries can be moved to outside peak times when congestion occurs.

“It was noted that the level crossing had additional congestion as a result of school students using it during peak times, rather than using the passenger footbridge. “Horsham District Council has been in discussion with West Sussex County Council about waiting and loading restrictions in the area of Billingshurst station. “Southern advised the working group of key benefits to the changes, such as a maintained or improved

rail service for eight out of 10 passengers, faster trains between Chichester and London, and attaching and detaching trains at Horsham so more journeys can be done.” The group is recommending potential solutions be discussed in detail with the county council, Tesco and The Weald School. Cllr David Sheldon said: “This work is an example of the scrutiny committee’s main goals, to examine issues that will improve local quality of life.”

Pensioner robbed A 74-year-old’s bag was snatched by another woman in Horsham. The robber left in a dark car, heading towards Crawley, after the crime in Harwood Road at 9.45am on Friday last week. The victim was unhurt but shaken. Her black handbag contained debit cards, cash and her house keys. Anyone with information can phone police on 0845 6070999, quoting serial 489 of July 22.

Silver Pingers People in residential homes can play table tennis, thanks to a new partnership between Sport England and Horsham District Council. Paul Taylor, the council’s Leisure Link recreation officer, said of the Silver Pingers initiative: “Table tennis can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. “At top level, it’s fast, athletic and super skilful. But it can also be enjoyed by older people, sometimes even in adapted form such as playing seated and using specialist equipment.” The project was piloted at Henfield Day Care Centre. Mr Taylor said it “went down a storm”, with 11 residents aged 65 to 92 participating, most for 90 minutes. He added: “Some of the participants were clearly knocking the rust off old talents, but it was nice to see less TT-experienced residents also rising to the challenge. “Cathy claimed she had not been so active for years. John with a learning disability was quite nervous at first, but once he was in the swing did not want to put his bat down.” Home managers who want more information about Silver Pingers can phone Ian Ford on 07764 146338 or email ian.ford@horsham.gov.uk

Your 1951 photograph of the corner of Station Road brings me very close to home indeed. Over 70 years ago, I was born in one of the Victorian terraced houses shown on the extreme left of the black and white picture – as was my mother! The double-decker Southdown bus – probably route 17 from Brighton – was a familiar sight to me. As a small child, those bright green buses represented Sussex, home and security. Behind the bus was Agate’s storage yard and on the opposite side of the bridge were their offices, managed by Peter Richardson and Ronald Betchley. Their main timber business was located just out of the picture on the corner of Foundry Lane, then just an unmade path. During the war, the railway bridge took a great deal of punishment from convoys of Canadian tanks and other military vehicles en route to the coast in preparation for D-Day. Such was the vibration that the advertising hoardings, which lined the left-hand side of the bridge approach, collapsed on a regular basis. To this day, I still wonder how this small bridge stood up to such weight and punishing vibration. After the war, a new bridge was considered to be necessary by the county highways department. Over 60 years later, we are still waiting! The whole of the Agate’s complex was demolished during the 1990s to make way for offices. And it is only in recent months that the corner site has once again been cleared following an arson attack a few years back. This corner of Horsham has improved a good deal with trees and foliage softening its appearance. But continuous heavy traffic makes it a hazardous spot for pedestrians. I am tired of the relentless walk around Horsham town armed only with a sackful of CVs, in an attempt to secure a part-time job. It’s not that there aren’t jobs out there. The majority of my friends have found themselves a perfectly amiable means of employment, yet I find myself unemployed and with a bank balance of depressingly low funds. Perhaps it’s the time of year or perhaps the employers I bombard with my CV don’t approve of my curly hair. There is a shocking lack of jobs, not only for people (students) of my age but for anyone seeking part-time work in the Horsham district. One would assume it wouldn’t be too difficult in a town boasting a wide range of pubs, bars, restaurants and an insultingly excessive amount of coffee shops to land a job somewhere, anywhere, but no such line of work has yet materialised. That’s not to say I haven’t had parttime jobs in the past, although I hide behind the fact being a student is my main occupation. I have had the varied luxury of waiting, hair washing, bar work, packing posters and stock checking, but none of the above has offered sufficient hours or sufficient pay. Perhaps such is the role of a student looking for work in order to muster their weekend and alcohol money. I’m sure not all places pay such a low wage. I’m told the supermarkets pay extremely well. However, I was lucky enough to be rejected for a cashier role at Tesco – quite the boost for one’s ego, you can imagine! Fingers crossed I will have more luck in September when the workforces of our local town decrease and many totter off to university. But these were my hopes this time last year and I remain in the same position. It is unfair that there are many in the same position, unable to find work or a source of income. After all, there is only so much scrounging from parents you can do before you are met with refusal. Internships are fantastic for experience but futile if you are expecting pay. I’m now on a mission to come up with a genius business venture or invention that will make me millions – and mean I avoid the walk of shame with an imploring ‘please employ me’ face. Wake up business owners. We’re students, we’re broke and we would like a job!

New village shop is the smallest in the county

Liz Horwood in the smallest village shop in West Sussex

From Monday, the village of Washington will boast what is believed to be the smallest village shop in West Sussex. The Village Larder measures just 115 square feet, but will carry more than 500 products. The building was once a pony stable next to the Frankland Arms pub in London Road and was a post office until this closed in 2005. But local resident Liz Horwood has set up the shop to serve the village seven days a week. She said: “Villagers have to travel by car or bus to visit shops in Ashington, Storrington, Steyning or Worthing. “With fewer buses and increasing petrol prices, I want to give local people the opportunity to walk to the Village Larder for their shopping and have a chat. “It brings a bit of life and a hub to

the village if you can just walk down the road and have a chat with the shopkeeper.

allowed to eat ‘allI’mthenotstock because I wouldn’t get behind the counter!

“I’m very conscious of food miles and keeping these to a minimum. It’s true that our essential products, such as baked beans and toilet rolls, will have travelled from further afield, but local distribution will help keep food miles down. “All our fresh produce, meat, fish, dairy, fruit and vegetables are coming from our local food heroes.

“I think the recession has helped to bring a focus back on our local communities. People are very costconscious and are being less wasteful. The big weekly shop is being replaced by more regular visits to buy fresh ingredients to make leftovers go further. “I’m sure the Village Larder will service that need. You’re not going to spend eight hours trawling up and down an aisle just to find one item – it’s all going to be close at hand.” But she joked: “I’m not allowed to eat all the stock because I wouldn’t get behind the counter! It will be very cosy and I have to say if you don’t know the locals already you soon will once you get a few people in the shop.” The smallest village shop in the UK is reportedly in Hudswell, North Yorkshire, and measures 100 square feet.

School sports day fun and records More than 600 children took part as Billingshurst Primary School held its inaugural sports days for Key Stage 1 and 2. The events were contested between the four new houses, with Cowdray winning Key Stage 1, Petworth House Key Stage 2 and Goodwood the overall prize. The other house competing was Pareham. Ellie Falloon set a new school record (15.2) in the girls 100m, while Josh Clarke (14.75) did the same in the boys 100m.

Horsham District Council has moved a big step nearer to the change in planning policy reported by The Resident two weeks ago. It is set to abandon the so-called interim statement approach, which could have paved the way for 500 homes in Southwater and 500 more in Billingshurst. After a meeting of the council’s Cabinet, a council spokesman said: “Serious concerns were raised by members on the implications of not moving forward with a plan-led approach in the short term. “Members concluded therefore to recommend to the council that the core strategy review should be prepared at the earliest opportunity. “If this recommendation is agreed at the council meeting on September 7, a programme for the preparation of this medium to long-term plan will be agreed. “This could result in consultation on the district’s housing requirement as early as the beginning of next year.”

The RSPB is urging people in Horsham district to be mindful of the damage that can be caused by nonnative species. The battle to stop the spread of invasive plants and the effect they can have on other wildlife is a familiar story on RSPB nature reserves, such as Pulborough Brooks, where workers fight to control Himalayan balsam. RSPB warden Pete Hughes said: “If we didn’t control the Himalayan balsam it could be a disaster for the other native plants and flowers. “Himalayan balsam has a really strong smell and lots of sweet nectar, meaning it attracts bumblebees, butterflies and other insects. This sounds great, but it means the insects spend less time pollinating our native wildflowers.” John Day, RSPB urban adviser, said: “Non-native plants which jump the garden fence cost the taxpayer and conservation organisations hundreds of thousands of pounds each year in trying to control and eradicate them. “People can do their bit by being careful about what they plant in the garden. If anyone is planning to buy plants for their pond, they need to check what they buy is native. “Disposing of plant waste properly is important too. Composting or burning it are the best options.” A minority of people illegally dump unwanted plants or release fish and amphibians into the countryside. Pulborough Brooks workers have

removed Red-eared Terrapins in recent years. Sophie Thomas, of plant conservation charity Plantlife, said: “Gardeners, pond and aquarium keepers can play a vital role in protecting our countryside from the damaging impacts of invasive non-native plants by choosing not to buy or grow them. “But buyers should be aware – some invasive plants are labelled with ‘buy British’ slogans or common names usually associated with native plants.” The RSPB says the most damaging of the invasive plants include Australian swamp stonecrop, parrot’s feather, floating pennywort, Japanese knotweed, invasive rhododendron and floating water primrose. New mosaic is just heavenly New artwork at St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, features a mosaic of multi-coloured glass. The collaboration between local artist Peter Ward and engineer Bob Silver is part of a farewell to departing vicar Ewen Souter. He said: “I hope this artwork will inspire those who see it as they pass, whether they live in the village or

pass through on the bus or in their cars, to think of the joy that Christ can bring to life through his redeeming love.” Horsham Sheet Metal, Opus Stained Glass from Poynings and Gatwick Sealed Units of Charlwood worked on the display.

Big future planned for Ben at Eden HR Ben Pirt joins Eden HR Consulting next week as HR advisor, after experiencing human resources first hand at the company last year. Eve Clennell, who heads up Eden HR Consulting, believes Ben has the potential and personal attributes required to go far in the HR arena and potentially wider business world. That belief in Ben’s potential comes after the 23-year old completed an internship at the Horsham-based company last summer, when Eve and her co-director husband Adam realised just how valuable a resource he could be to them. Monday (August 1) is the first day in post for Ben, who attended Tanbridge House School in Horsham before graduating with a 2:1 degree in Human Resource Management at Portsmouth University. Ben said: “I was suffering from post-university blues after completing my second year exams and didn’t want to waste the four months I had off. It was a good time to send away my CV to HR consultancies and Eden responded.” Eve is passionate about putting something back into the industry and knows that graduates can find it hard to find work in HR without previous experience, and they cannot gain that without finding a job. “Ben’s CV came at just the right time for us as we were looking at ways to develop the business,” Eve said. Community matters to Waitrose Storrington The Storrington branch of Waitrose has donated £430 to the Chanctonbury Leisure Centre. The money was raised through Waitrose’s Community Matters scheme earlier this year and will be used to purchase various items of equipment, for use by children at the centre. Chris Jones, trustee from Chanctonbury Leisure Centre, said: “With the centre being run as a registered charity, it has been difficult to find the finance in the current economic climate to provide everything that is required to make it operate as effectively as we would like. “The trustees and staff are extremely grateful, not only to Waitrose, but also to its customers, for supporting us during these tough times. We hope to build even closer links with Waitrose in the months ahead.” The Community Matters scheme is a national initiative that is run in stores. Each store shortlists local not-for-profit organisations that could benefit from its profits and

customers have the opportunity to vote for which they think should receive the money.

Learn the secrets of building your business It’s here. Dee Blick, the local marketing extraordinaire and columnist at The Resident, has launched her hotly anticipated second book, The Ultimate Small Business Marketing Book. The book reached number one in the best selling Sales and Marketing titles on Amazon.co.uk within 24 hours of its release. Here you can read the first in a series of excerpts – exclusively in The Resident. Chapter 1 - introducing The 90 Minute Marketing Masterclass “Most small businesses undersell themselves simply because they have given insufficient thought to their products or services and how they can be segmented to really connect with their potential buyers. Let me illustrate this with the example of a pet sitting business, Tranquil Pets, Homes & Gardens, a licensee of The Pets Homes and Gardens Company. The licensees, Julie and Sarah, wanted to offer dog walking services. They both love dogs, are experienced dog owners, and have many years experience working with dogs in kennels. Initially they had planned to advertise their dog walking services in much the same way that most pet sitters do, i.e. a line of text, followed by the cost of the walk. By earmarking just 90 minutes for their product and service review, looking particularly at how they could segment their dog walking services, they arrived at the following list: • Cross-Country energetic dog walks • Your dog’s favourite walk to his exact route • Short walks either locally or at a favourite park or woods some miles away • Bespoke dog walks. Tell us how long or short you want each walk to be each time • Early morning dog walks to suit commuters • Well Being dog walks for dogs recovering from an illness or on a weight loss programme

You can see that by going into this level of detail about the range of dog walking services that they can offer, Julie and Sarah will attract customers seeking a service tailored to their needs and those of their dog. The dog walking service is now more appealing because specific needs are being addressed. Let’s look at how this same approach could work with a service provider, such as a marketing consultant looking to promote their expertise to small businesses. They could promote their marketing consultancy in hourly, half day and full-day slots to small businesses. Not a bad start but they could go one step further as follows: • 60 minute one-to-one marketing Masterclasses • One day marketing planning workshops • Troubleshooting marketing clinics • 60 minute marketing health check • 30 minute complimentary telephone marketing sessions • Three hour intensive marketing seminars focusing on one specific

small business marketing need Similar to the example of Tranquil Pets, Homes & Gardens, the marketing consultant does not need to increase the range of services they provide to attract more customers. They just need to make their services more enticing and appealing to their target audience. Look upon what you offer your customers as a diamond; a whole, but with many facets. Don’t be content with producing just one line of bland text about your products or services. Go into more detail, using these examples to guide you. The three key questions to ask yourself are: • How can I segment what I offer so that I can appeal to all my target customers? Use the previous examples as a guide. • Are there any specific improvements that I need to make to my products and services? Are there any that can be easily implemented and at little financial cost? Are there any products or services that I need to mothball for the time being because they are not in demand? Don’t promote something that nobody now needs just because it was popular once. Archive or remove it. In the next three chapters we look at how to promote your products and services through online and off-line sales communications. By answering these three questions beforehand, it will help make your communication more powerful, exciting and most importantly, targeted.”

Pulborough PR pro in the running for ‘Self-Employed Parent of the Year’ A local businesswoman has been nominated in the 2011 ‘Mum and Working’ awards. Gina Hollands, who runs Bellwood Lonsdale PR was shortlisted in the awards, which are organised by website mumandworking.co.uk and which reward and recognise the companies and individuals that make flexible working possible. The aim of the awards scheme is to show that family-friendly employment not only supports family life but gives real benefits to the companies involved. Commenting on the awards, TV

presenter, author, entrepreneur and mum Sarah Beeny said: “As a mum of four boys I completely understand the importance of flexible working and the value of spending time with your family. It’s great that the ‘mum and working’ awards celebrate the people who are making this possible for parents across the UK and it’s great to see so many successful mums out there taking part.” The awards are made up of seven categories that recognise working parents, flexible employers and parents in business. Over 300 nominations were made

this year and Gina has been nominated in the Self-Employed Parent of the Year category. Gina said: “As any parent who owns their own company knows, it’s hard work juggling family life with running a business, and it’s great to be recognised in this way. Many of our clients are local business owners who are also working parents and appreciate the flexibility of someone who, like them, doesn’t just work nine to five. “PR has a reputation for being expensive and only for big companies, but we offer a flexible approach to

help make it affordable for everyone. Working with local companies is especially rewarding as we can see first-hand the effect our work has in helping them to grow and succeed.” The judges, including multi-award winning businesswoman Wendy Shand of Tots To Travel, are now reviewing all shortlisted entries and the finalists will be announced in September. All finalists will be invited to an awards ceremony at the ‘Business Mums Summit’ in Brighton on October 10.

A singer from Horsham is the starring voice on a charity single that aims to raise awareness of human trafficking. Charlotte Knight sings on ‘Everyday’, a track taken from album ‘Just Enough for the Real World’ which raises money for Emma Thompson’s Helen Bamber Foundation. The launch of the single, which has been organised by The Everyday Project, is available now and coincides with a new campaign to highlight the problem of trafficking. For two weeks, the band’s founder and campaigner, Phil Knight will be kept in a 10ft by 8ft shipping container outside Euston Station in London. He will experience solitary confinement and extreme isolation, with only basic provisions, in an attempt to expose the conditions of those kept by human traffickers. The campaign can be seen via live video streaming on www.justenoughfortherealworld. com Charlotte Knight said: “At times and as his wife, I feel I need to advise against such risky campaigns like The Everyday Project, but Phil’s passion for the charity and determination to make a difference in this world is impossible to go up against! Everyday is one of my favourite tracks on the album as everyone can relate to it.” The song is an upbeat and lively retro blues track and is available on iTunes. Actress and Chairperson of The Helen Bamber Foundation, Emma Thompson, said: “This is great music by great writer/performers who were inspired by great suffering. Weirdly, it is full of humour and hope and breathes life into its listeners, not sadness.

Friday 29th July Monikers at The Malt Shovel, Horsham- Foo Fighters Tribute Act (First set all Foo’s tracks)

“Joyful and timely, it reminds us what artists can do when they’re in the right place at the right time.” Phil added: “My mission in life is to stop human trafficking and I will do whatever it takes to make this happen.” Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, second only to the illegal arms trade. The Freedom of Information Act revealed that 957 children were trafficked in just eight months in 2008, whilst there has been a 90% increase in the number of victims between 2006 and 2009. Founded by Helen Bamber OBE and Dr Michael Korzinski in 2005, The Helen Bamber Foundation is a UK-based human rights charity providing medical consultation, therapeutic care, human rights advocacy and practical support to survivors of gross human rights violations, torture, political oppression, trafficking for sexual exploitation and other forms of extreme cruelty.

The best Chinese restaurant in Horsham? Steve Goodwin

Review

Jade City, Queen Street, Horsham

Look on Trip Advisor for restaurants in Horsham and in position number two you will find Jade City, listed just underneath the fine cuisine of Restaurant Tristan. This must tell a story in itself, but not satisfied with the opinion of the online masses, The Resident decided to pay a visit to the Chinese eaterie and takeaway on Queen Street to try it out for ourselves. Jade City has been a staple member of the ever-increasing restaurant scene in Horsham since it arrived six years ago. Manager Mei Wong moved to Horsham over a decade ago, after running a successful Chinese takeaway in London for many years. With a family history in the industry, Mei wanted to bring traditional Chinese cuisine to Horsham, but with her own ethos of honest, fairly priced food. For a while now, Jade City has been running a special offer of an ‘all you can eat’, four course meal from the a la carte menu for £13.50 per person,

which sounds too good to be true, so we decided to put it to the test. Firstly, it has to be said, it really is all you can eat. You can have as much as you want. And the food is not kept warm under a lamp in a dish, it’s cooked to order. To start we chose to share four starters - butterfly king prawns, smoked chicken, salt and pepper squid, and the classic spare ribs. While all of the dishes were as good as they could be, it was the salt and pepper squid that was our definite favourite. Salty pieces of juicy squid covered in dashes of chilli, spring onion and black peppercorns. It’s one of those starters that you wish was a main. We were presented with the duck course, a firm favourite in Chinese restaurants everywhere, also included in the special menu. It was the classic duck with pancakes, cucumber and spring onions affair, but the twist with Jade City’s version is that they make their own hoi sin sauce from scratch. And it was delicious. If you like hoi sin sauce, you’ll love this one. Sauces are very important to Mei, and she insists that they are all

homemade. “If your sauces are right, your food will taste good”, she explained. It’s not just this area she is passionate about either. All of the fruit and vegetables used in Jade City are bought from Horsham’s local produce market, and the meat is from a farm in Rusper, so apart from the Chinese spices, everything is local. For our main course, we tried a couple of Jade’s most popular dishes, crispy shredded chilli beef and sweet and sour chicken, and we were recommended the roast duck in plum sauce. The chilli beef is one of my personal favourites, and I thoroughly enjoyed this serving, nicely crispy and fresh. The sweet and sour chicken was lovely and sticky but the duck stole the show in this course with its lovely sweet and fruity sauce. Mei explained that the sauce is made from two different plum varieties. The mains were accompanied by egg fried rice and the delicious singapore spicy noodles. By this point we were wondering how much more we could manage, but more treats lay ahead. Desserts are not often considered the strong point of Chinese restaurants, but Jade City aim to change that school of thought by including desserts in the four course menu deal. We tried the traditional Chinese sweet of deep fried banana fritters coated with toffee sauce and sesame seeds, served with ice cream. An apple version is also available. This was as good as it sounds, but would have perhaps been enjoyed more if we had left a little more space! Jade City’s approach is admirable. They provide locally sourced, authentic, delicious Chinese food in a

pleasant environment, and with the current ‘all you can eat’ deal, at a very affordable price. When you consider all these things, if you are looking to head out for a Chinese, you can’t go wrong with Jade City. It’s looking good value for its number two spot. Jade City’s menu can be found on www.visithorsham.co.uk

Teens take on a Wilde production A group of teenagers from Horsham are staging the famous Oscar Wilde classic The Importance of Being Earnest on Monday, August 15. The performance will take place in the Studio at The Capitol for one

night only and has been produced by a group of 16 to 19 year olds (three of which are members of the National Youth Theatre). The play has been directed by Laurence Baker. In preparing for the show, the young actors have taken a keen

interest in the social class system of the 19th century. Rosie Rudkin has designed and made all the costumes, which include period detail and reflect the characters through links to birds and insects - Lady Bracknell’s costume is based on a peacock and

Cecily’s on a butterfly. The group recently showcased the costumes at Nymans Gardens. Georgina Briggs who plays Lady Bracknell said: “It is so much fun to realise how the characters insult each other in such a controlled and witty way - I love the power of Lady Bracknell and I really enjoyed the famous handbag scene.” Alex Bohan commented on the cattiness of her scene as Gwendolyn with Cecily, saying: “They are so mean to each other but keep up the pretence of manners all the way through - it is so funny!” The show has been produced by The Fresnel Youth Theatre Group, which was established by Julia Martin. Julia also runs Dramaworks, a class that helps people under 16 to develop their skills as performers as well as boosting their confidence. She said: “The idea behind the Fresnel Youth Theatre Group is to allow Dramaworks students to continue performing and learning about the theatre, once they reach 16. This group has really risen to the

challenge. I am really proud of them all”. Don’t miss the chance to step back in time, witness the intelligence of Oscar Wilde’s wit as well as the talent of these teenagers. Tickets will sell out fast! For more information or to book, visit www.capitolhorsham.com

Take a look behind the magic of movies James Hood Entertainment Editor

james@the-resident.co.uk

Have you ever wondered what’s going on in the room behind you when you go to the cinema? You might remember seeing the silhouette of someone moving in the light as you eagerly waited for the lights to go down or the trailers to come on and wondered who it was. Well, it’s all changing back there. After almost 120 years of filming, and showing, motion pictures on 35mm film the industry is moving into the 21st century. And The Capitol is keeping up with the times. The cinema, in Horsham, has three movie screens and shows the latest releases in both the traditional 35mm film and on fully digitalised cartridges (hard drives), depending on which format is sent by the film studio. 35mm film tape (which gets its name from its width) was invented by William Dickson and Thomas Eddison in 1892. Today, more than a

century later, it is still used for movie making and photography, and until recently remained the most effective method for recording and projecting images. So why, in a digital age, has the film industry taken so long to move on from 35mm film? “It’s the best!” Says James Simmonds, a technician at The Capitol. “The quality of 35mm film is fantastic, so the whole industry has been reluctant to change things. It’s proven to be a reliable and flexible way to film movies and then play them back. There’s been very little reason to change to digital. Many directors still love to work with 35mm and even insist on it. “Some directors who now use digital will even add the effect of a 35mm film to the final version, which shows just how popular it is. That is what Tom Ford did for A Single Man”, James added.

takes 24 frames ‘toItmake up just one second of a film ’

Using the 35mm filming method, motion pictures are shot onto the film reels, then edited by cutting the tape before piecing it back together in the correct place, to create a seamless feature length film. When they are watched, it takes 24 frames (the squares on the tape) to make up just one second of a film. It is a skill that James has also learnt, as many of the films need to be prepared this way before being shown to audiences. “The 35mm movies don’t come to us in one piece. There are usually six to eight reels that need to be pieced together in the correct place before we put them on the large platter – a turning table that feeds the film through the projector. Then once the film has finished screening at the

James Simmonds (left) and technician Pete Ayres

cinema, we take the feature apart again and send it back in its individual reel. It’s all very clever, if a bit time consuming.” It’s all very enjoyable too, apparently, as James is doing something he has been passionate about for years. The technician began at The Capitol eight years ago as a steward and now helps run the projection rooms at the venue for both screenings and on-stage performances. “I remember watching Cinema Paradiso and falling in love with cinema, just like the boy does in the film. I felt the same way when I started working in the projection room here at The Capitol”, James said. So if 35mm film is popular, why the move to digital hard drives for

Photos by Rob James

projecting film? James says it does make life easier. “Now we get movies sent to us on a hard drive, which we put into the computer, and hit play! We can also create a running order on the system of trailers and adverts and once you start, it will play them all one after the other. But we still need to be around in case anything goes wrong. “Digital films also make life a little easier if we want to move a showing from one screen to another. We won’t have to transfer large amounts of film anymore.” James said. The introduction of digital methods will also have benefits for the independent film industry, as the cost of distributing films to cinemas will be a fraction of those for sending out

reels of film (around £900 per theatre). This will in turn make so-called art house movies more accessible to a wider audience. Regardless of any changes or technological advances, for audiences the experience is just as magical, with very little noticeable difference between the screening of a 35mm or digital film. Although the new versions will lack the effect of the black lines and blotches that have become an endearing feature of movie classics. Thankfully, whether it’s for a blockbuster or a rom com, on 35mm or digital film, the silver screen is still captivating audiences the world over, and that projection room behind our seats is as intriguing as ever.

Family Rides

Cycle your way through Summer and the South It’s the perfect time of year to get on your bike. So, The Resident has been pedalling around for weeks to discover some of the nicest, most picturesque routes around. This is the first in a series of features on cycle routes in the district. Whether you are a cycling enthusiast who’d give Lance Armstrong a ride for his money, or more of a novice content with a slower pace while taking in the scenery, there will be something to suit you. We’ve found a range of options, from winding lanes away from the hustle and bustle and off-road bridleways that take you off the beaten track, to busier, more social routes that are popular with avid cyclists. You can enjoy the activity on your own or with friends or family and with tracks for people of all abilities, anyone can enjoy an hour, or even a day out in the open air. We’ve even spoken to some bike-related businesses, and pubs and other venues along the way and some are also featured here, making picking a refreshing pit stop nice and simple. In the first of our featured routes, we travel through leafy Barns Green, Ashington and Thakeham – the perfect places to begin an idyllic journey by bike. Here you will find a combination of friendly, sociable communities, forgotten forests full of wildlife and village scenes worthy of the front of a chocolate box - bliss on any Summer’s day. Barns Green lies between Billingshurst and Itchingfield and has become well known for its popular half-marathon, for which people travel

Blue Bird Garage

from miles around to run, surrounded by the village’s natural beauty. There’s plenty here for both young and old. Thakeham is a quaint as small country villages come. With just one main street (aptly called The Street), there are just a few hundred households, so if you’re looking for a peaceful ride, head here. There is an active community in Thakeham and an enthusiastic cricket team, which plays to a high standard. Ashington is the busier of this week’s locations, giving resting cyclists a vast choice when it comes to stopping for a pub lunch or tea and other refreshments. The town is north east of Storrington and boasts views of sprawlings fields and the Downs. Here you will find our suggested routes, so start planning your trip, decide where you will cycle, where you can find a nature trail, and (equally as important) where you will stop for lunch. Then get on your bike!

This depends on your timeframe for selling. If you have put your property on the market with an understanding estate agent who appreciates that you have yet to find somewhere to buy and simply want to ‘test the water’ until something turns up, I would not recommend letting all and sundry traipse through your house as they simply create housework whilst you are in no position to move yourself! However, if you are serious about selling it is definitely advisable to allow as many people as possible to view your property. Over the last 25 years I have shown far too many non-proceedable buyers around my client’s houses who have then gone on to move heaven and earth to get themselves into a buying position, to be able to ignore this group of applicants. I do not agree with the common myth that buyers who have not sold are a waste of time and simply enjoy wandering around houses for sale as some sort of pastime or hobby ! We all know how difficult it is sometimes to find time to bring the milk in let alone having to systematically organize the time and logistics involved in setting aside a couple of hours during the day to drive around the countryside viewing houses without any intention whatsoever of buying any of them ? So despite what you may have heard to the contrary, every viewer of your house is a potential buyer, and they should be treated as such. Whilst some may be in a more advanced position than others, have a greater degree of market knowledge or be more realistic about what their budget can stretch to; I can assure you that they will all eventually buy someone’s home so why shouldn’t it be yours ? So if you are contemplating putting your house on the market and would appreciate a free no-obligation market appraisal please call me at our new Horsham office on 01403 264962 or email ‘rossattwood@harper-james. co.uk’.

With fuel prices on the increase, gas and electric bills going up and many retail products more expensive now than they were a year ago, people are feeling the purse strings being tightened. When you add in the fact that many people have seen little or no pay rises since 2007, many households are having to prioritise where they spend there money. It is worth spending the time, listing what are the essential bills and what is a luxury. How many people pay for the latest mobile phone, the full sky package and even insure their pets, before protecting their income! There are many ways that you can protect your income and make sure your loved ones are financially sound if your income was to cease.

A

Q A

Should I let people view my house if they are not under offer themselves?

Harper James Land & Property The Old Post Office, Worthing Road. Southwater West Sussex RH13 1RD 01403 732727 www.harper-james.co.uk

Q A

How long could you maintain your household bills and your lifestyle if your income stopped?

Death - In the event of your death, you can take out a life insurance policy to produce a lump sum of money, or derive an income for many years to come. Your family could use this to pay off a mortgage and have an extra amount to pay the household bills.

Serious Illness - In the event of you being diagnosed with a critical illness, again you can take out a protection policy to produce a lump sum of money. You could use this to pay for the best medical care, clear your debts or pay off your mortgage. Either way, it would take off the pressure of having to return to work as soon as possible, increasing your recovery time.

Redundancy - In these uncertain times, how many people can claim that their job is 100% safe? Should you be made redundant, how confident would you be to secure alternative work before your money rang out? Redundancy cover would give you a monthly income for a period of time, until you can find the right job for you.

These are many other ways of making sure that your families lifestyles will not be affected should your income stop, whether that would be short term or forever. If you are more likely to insure your television, than your own life then please spend time focusing on what is really important! To find out more about this, please contact me on 01403 268562. Q

We are buying a house but the sellers have put a spanner in the works by saying in the property information form that it has suffered from subsidence. We love the house but are concerned. Surely the rule is that you should never touch a house that has subsidence. Should we withdraw our offer? Not necessarily, though your solicitor must make detailed and thorough enquiries on your behalf. First, establish whether the subsidence has been investigated and, if appropriate, remedial action taken. If it was, was it dealt with through an insurance claim? Request schedules of any work carried out and any subsequent certificate of structural adequacy. If a certificate was issued, make sure its benefits transfer to you if you buy. Re-inspection might be necessary depending on how long ago any certificate was issued. Was a buildings regulations completion certificate issued? This would have been because underpinning was required.

Have the sellers had problems insuring the property? Consider taking on their insurance, if they have it. If remedial works have not been carried out it would be prudent to obtain a full structural survey to ensure the property is no longer moving. You may need a structural engineer’s report - your surveyor will advise you on that.

You might be able to negotiate a reduction in the price of the house, of course, on the basis that this should cover the costs of any work that has to be done. If you are getting a mortgage, the lender must be kept informed and must be happy with the outcome.

Toyota gives new Yaris a sharper styling focus Olli Nott Motors Reporter

olli@the-resident.co.uk

In designing the new Yaris, Toyota has produced a look that is bolder, sharper and more dynamic, while remaining true to the principle of “compact outside, spacious inside” that has characterised the car since the original model broke cover in 1999. In the words of chief designer Dezi Nagaya the exterior has a “keen” appearance, seen particularly in the all-new front end with its slim, horizontal headlights and prominent, deep lower air intake that anchors the car’s wide stance, sporting a low centre of gravity. In profile, there is still the distinctive, steeply sloping belt line running the length of the vehicle, while at

the rear, the familiar Yaris Y-shaped graphic is retained, but expressed in distinctive new styling. Detail touches include a larger front quarterlight, with the A-pillar moved further forward, giving a more steeply raked windscreen. Shorter front and rear overhangs, a 50mm increase in the wheelbase and more prominent wheelarches give the car a sportier look. Overall new Yaris is just 100mm longer than the previous model, which means it keeps its urbanfriendly tight turning circle of just 4.7m. The width is unchanged, but trimming the height by 20mm to just 1,510mm adds to the car’s lower, more purposeful appearance, while the efficient aerodynamic qualities of the body deliver a class leading drag coefficient of Cd 0.287, a promising factor as aerodynamics count for just as much fuel consumption as greener

engines. New Yaris’s bolder look is completed by new 15 or 16-inch alloy wheel designs and a choice of 10 colours for the body, including two completely new shades – Deep Aqua and Burning Red. There is an equally fresh approach to the interior, with a new focus on creating a cockpit environment for the driver. The principal meters have moved from the centre of the dashboard to sit directly in the driver’s eye line behind the steering wheel, which itself has a more upright angle for a more engaging driving position. The strong horizontal lines of the new dashboard emphasise the generous width of the cabin – 30mm greater than before – with a new softpadded dash section with matching upper door panel pads. The colour of these padded sections co-ordinates with inserts in the seat upholstery, reinforcing the general high quality feel of the interior. A panoramic glass roof is available (standard on the topof-the-range model) that increases the spacious feel of the cabin. Tactile, premium details add to the quality look and feel, with gun metal trims around the driver’s instruments, the multimedia touchscreen and air vents, and chrome detailing on the controls and switchgear. The front seats are new, with increased vertical adjustment and, on some models, an arm rest for the driver. Their design gives both better body holding and comfort, with wider, higher sided cushions that have a raised front edge which can help combat tiredness on long journeys.

Vauxhall gives customers an option for flexible finance Vauxhall is today launching a unique-in-industry finance package which allows customers to tailor their finance to suit their budgets, putting them in the very best Vauxhall they can afford. All buyers have to do is choose and

spec their new model at www.vauxhall.co.uk, decide on a deposit from zero upwards (Vauxhall will contribute at least £500) and select any term between 24 and 60 months. The website’s easy-to-use Flexible Finance Calculator means you just enter a deposit then adjust the slider until the monthly payment figure and the payback duration are right for you. Customers also benefit from 0% APR on the offer which runs until September 30. “We are delighted to introduce this highly competitive finance offer,” said Peter Hope, Vauxhall’s Marketing Director. “Flexible Finance allows buyers to drive away a new Vauxhall on a bespoke, flexible monthly payment programme of their choice with the

knowledge that they’ve bought the best car to suit their budget.” Flexible Finance is the perfect complement to Vauxhall Lifetime Warranty, another industry-first from the Luton based company. Vauxhall Lifetime Warranty offers owners the reassurance of a comprehensive warranty that could last the lifetime of the vehicle. It applies to the first owner of any Vauxhall and continues throughout the life of the car until it reaches 100,000 miles. If you still needed something to persuade you towards a Vauxhall, what more is there?! For further information and terms and conditions on Vauxhall’s Lifetime Warranty, visit www.vauxhall.co.uk/ warranty

Thinner seatbacks for the front seats mean more knee-room for those sitting in the rear – a classleading 645mm. A similar design treatment for the rear seats has helped increase load space depth by 145mm to 710mm – another best-inclass figure. Overall luggage capacity has grown to 347 litres (to roof line) with the rear seats in place, 768 litres when they are folded flat. And to make the job of loading up easier, the

tailgate is 20mm wider than on the previous model. I can’t wait for the New Yaris to hit the streets of Horsham, a class leading motor that deserves to be rid of the bad press its parent has received in the last few years. The much anticipated Yaris Hybrid Synergy Drive will be the one to look out for, with a possible road tax charge of mere pennies! Toyota are back on top!

T20 joy for Horsham and Trinity Youth Cricket

The U15 sides of Horsham and Horsham Trinity are both celebrating spectacular success. Having already been crowned champions of the ECB T20 County Cup, Horsham U15 edged a thriller at Ealing to reach the regional semifinals. Ben Shoare was their star with the bat, retiring after reaching 50 in Horsham’s 126-7. Zac Chinn (19) hit four boundaries, including fours from the second and third balls he faced. Ealing reached 117-5 with one over left, needing 10 to win or nine if they lost fewer than two wickets in the over. David Drage bowled one of the batsmen and Shoare ran out the home side’s dangerman after taking

over as wicketkeeper from the injured Michael Thomas. Ealing needed four to win from the final ball and managed three from a thick edge, leaving the scores tied but Horsham victorious on a countback to the 19-over totals. Horsham will face Woodford Wells on the John Dew ground on Tuesday (10.30am), with a potential regional final on the main ground later the same day. Horsham Trinity U15 beat the other division winners, Haywards Heath U15, by four wickets in the North and Mid Sussex Junior League final at Cuckfield. It was a particularly memorable occasion for leg-spinner Nic Mathers, who took the league’s first hat-trick as Heath finished on 93-5 in 20 overs. Trinity struggled to 45-6 from 13

overs before tremendous batting by Louie Donnelly (31 not out) and Mathers (12 not out) saw them home with four balls to spare. Ryan Kirkland took 3-19, Connor O’Brien retired at 25 and Tim Weston hit an unbeaten 24 as Billingshurst

U16 beat Wisborough Green U16 in the IDentilam Colts League. O’Brien again retired at 25, helping Hurst to another win in a rainaffected match against Pulborough U16 despite Guy McKilligin’s 25 and Ed Killner’s 24.

Kate makes her mark Youth Swimming

Atlantis’ Kate Windle made her presence felt in the British Gas ASA National Age Group Championships at Sheffield. Competing in her first nationals, just after her 11th birthday, Kate was one of the youngest competitors in her age group. She swam magnificently in the 200m breast heats, recording a new personal best (PB) of 2.59.49 to qualify in 7th place for the 10-strong final. And she produced an even better swim in the final, finishing eighth in 2.58.43. Her exertions caught up with her in the final half of the 400m IM heats and she finished in 5.49.57, just outside her PB. Andy Lobley, deputy head coach of Atlantis, said: “Kate did herself proud. She achieved her target of making the final in the 200m breast and recorded two PBs. You can’t ask for better than that.” Head coach Bill Penny added:

“Kate deserves her success. She has worked hard all season and has bags of promise.” Three Atlantis swimmers are competing in the British Gas National Youth Championships – Cam Lambourne (100m and 50m free), Issy Dunlop (200m breast) and Katy Harris (100m back).

A collision with two team-mates was the lowlight of a frustrating weekend for Kieran Vernon in the Protyre Formula Renault BARC series. The 21-year-old from West Chiltington was involved in a first-lap crash with title rivals Josh Webster and Archie Hamilton, which left the others out of the first race and Vernon three laps down. And although he recovered to finish fourth in the second race at Croft, North Yorkshire, Vernon struggled on the straights as his car suffered from low power all weekend. He said of the crash: “It all got a bit jammed up and I got caught up in the accident, with the concertina effect. Archie slowed up, I ran in the back of him and as Archie spun he hit Josh.

“It was just one of those things. You have nowhere to go.” Hamilton (Hook) said: “Something like that was going to happen at some point as we’re all so close to the pace and running identical times. It was just a racing incident.” It was a near-perfect weekend for Dino Zamparelli (Bristol), who finished first and second to move a point ahead of Webster (Stowmarket) in a tight title race. The series moves to Thruxton, Hampshire, on September 3, but Vernon faces a dilemma as the meeting clashes with the first day of the Porsche Carrera Cup weekend at Knockhill, Fife.

Top six: Dino Zamparelli (Antel Motorsport) 175, Josh Webster (Fortec Motorsport) 174, James Thorp (MTech Lite) 169, Kourosh Khani (Scorpio Motorsport) 152, Archie Hamilton (Fortec) 150, Kieran Vernon (Fortec) 149.

Social Summer Andy Stonestreet 01403 230554 www.northwestsussexseagulls.co.uk

Albion’ fans most active internet discussion board, North Stand Chat (NSC), was temporarily shut down last week due to comments made by a well-known newspaper reporter. So I thought it would be interesting to discuss how social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and NSC have kept us all interested in football this Summer. Many years ago I was a member of the Seagulls mailing list. Emails would be sent and received, but it all took time. Nowadays, opinions and replies can be posted within seconds of each other. On NSC, lengthy discussions will develop on almost any subject, from a player’s loyalty to what music is playing on your iPod. Many a post on NSC will be by someone claiming to be an “insider”. They will post a snippet of information and before long a hundred others will add their tuppenceworth. Never mind whether the original post was fact or fiction. Facebook is another of the fans’ favourites but is more likely to be where they form a group to publicise events or share photos. We at NW Sussex Seagulls use it to reach out to fans and advertise our supporters’ coaches or meetings. In a world where we are accustomed to 24-hour news, Facebook is too slow for many fans who want to be able to read or post a message on the go. This is where Twitter has really found a niche. With the rise of internet-enabled mobile phones, Twitter has become increasingly popular. Fans have not been slow to recognise they can follow their chosen celebrities and sometimes tweet with them. Football fans are no different. This Summer has seen an explosion of Albion fans following current and former players – and even players that might be about to sign. One particular transfer saga that really captured the imagination of Albion’s Twitter community was Kazenga LuaLua’s move from Newcastle United. For weeks, tweets were suggesting LuaLua had been spotted at airports or in taxis around Brighton. There was even a false Twitter account claiming to be LuaLua, which was finally outed by a Newcastle player. Whether players are allowed to keep on tweeting is something we will all watch with interest. Already some clubs are suggesting it would be better if their players didn’t.

Cambridge exam is too tough Martin Read Cricket

Roffey’s dream of cup glory is over for this season, but they can feel justifiably proud of reaching the last 16 in the ECB National Knockout Cup – the only Sussex side to do so. Preferring to chase, Roffey put Cambridge Granta in to bat and initially contained the visitors. But after passing 100 with only one wicket down, Cambridge began to score quickly and threatened to post a killer total. Then Luke Barnard’s customarily economical spell reined in the batsmen, despite some profitable stands. Jason Coleman (70), Sean Park (69), Alex Fullarton (61) and Ben Creese (45) were the principal scorers as Barnard finished with 3-39. Roffey president Peter Cheesman said 279 to win was “gettable on this high-scoring ground if we get off to a good start”.

Cambridge Granta won by 85 runs

But 4-1 soon became 20-2. Enter Mike Norris, playing with his usual freedom, and at the 50 partnership Roffey were still firmly on course with 209 needed from 30 overs. With the score on 103-3 in the 21st over Norris was in control, but he appeared to be unsettled when a dropped catch gave him a life. Unable to capitalise, his dismissal for 62 slowed the momentum until a flurry of sixes in a quickfire seventhwicket partnership revived Roffey’s hopes.

run has given ‘usOurthecup confidence to overcome good teams ’

Chris Plaister (30), a pugilistic 28 from Simon Shivarain and a 26-run cameo from Chris Webb all promised serious challenges, but wickets fell too regularly. Many risks had to be taken and the last four wickets amassed only 11 runs, Roffey finishing significantly short with almost eight overs remaining. Imran Shah (3-34), Ben Creese (26) and Jimmy Handley (2-27) were the pick of the bowlers. The sizeable crowd gave enthusiastic encouragement and although the result was disappointing, Roffey’s

Roffey on their big day

cup progress against strong sides had provided excellent entertainment. Cambridge Granta are East Anglian League champions, with five Saturday sides and a sizeable pool of players from whom to select. Roffey took the field without allrounder George Fleming and Andy McGorian, as overseas players are not allowed in the competition, but captain Norris offered no excuses. He said: “That side is not unbeatable, but they bowled better than us and we lost our heads a bit, losing wickets when we shouldn’t have. “Our cup run has given us the confidence to overcome good teams and our young side has learned a lot this season, which should stand us in good stead.” With six games left in their inaugural season in the Sussex Premier

League, including fixtures against four of the sides below them, Roffey have a positive opportunity to improve their creditable fifth position.

Sport in Brief Motor Sport A collision with Davide Valsecchi’s car at the Nürbirgring possibly denied Jolyon Palmer his first points in the GP2 series. But the 20-year-old from Southwater is looking forward to this weekend’s races at the Hungaroring after coming close to a top-six finish in Germany. He said: “In the second race at the Nürbirgring I had an unbelievable first lap and made up a number of places, then I had some great scraps on wet tyres before pitting for slicks. “I was challenging for sixth place when Valsecchi made contact with me as he came out of the pits on cold tyres. “It was very unlucky after one of my best drives of the season, but hopefully my luck will turn around soon and I can bounce back in Hungary. “I’ve never been to the Hungaroring before but it looks like a nice flowing track and I hope to get up to speed quickly. “Hopefully we have found something with the car set-up since the Nürbirgring, so we should be more competitive.” Valsecchi was judged to have been the guilty party and received a 10-place grid penalty for this weekend’s visit to Budapest.

Nash surprised by England call James Herd Cricket

Former Horsham player Chris Nash received a phone call this week that he was not expecting. On Monday, it was announced he had been called up by England Lions. Nash, who joined Horsham Cricket Club as a seven-year-old, is part of a 12-man squad for one-day matches against Sri Lanka A at Worcester and Northampton on August 12, 14 and 16.

a great opportunity ‘andIt’sI’m really looking forward to it ’

He told The Resident: “It’s fantastic news and I wasn’t really expecting it.” The batsman has been able to perform more of an all-rounder role this year for Sussex and lies top of the bowling averages for his county in two competitions. He said: “Bowling regularly is something I have always wanted to do. I spent a lot of time in the Winter working on it, in particular for the one-day stuff, and it’s nice to be

getting thrown the ball a bit earlier now.” This is an aspect of his game that Nash is keen to continue improving. He added: “I’ve just got to keep putting in performances and hopefully I’ll keep getting more bowling. “It has always been one of my aims to play in all three formats, because I want to play every game in the season. It keeps you working hard and brings new aspects to your game. “To have kept the good form going all year in all three competitions is really pleasing.” His form has helped Sussex to the top of their CB40 group, the quarterfinal of the T20 Cup (they play old adversaries Lancashire at Hove on August 8) and a mid-table place in the Championship. But the former Tanbridge House School pupil and ex-Collyer’s student says now is the time to continue that form as Sussex look to push for silverware. He said: “We’re at the key point of the season now, where trophies are won. I think our experience of winning trophies will put us in good stead. We’re working harder than we have ever done and hopefully we can finish well.” Unfortunately for Nash, the call-up means he will not take part in this

James Taylor (Leicestershire, captain), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Scott Borthwick (Durham), Danny Briggs (Hampshire), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire), James Harris (Glamorgan), Stuart Meaker (Surrey), Chris Nash (Sussex), Ben Stokes (Durham), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

on August 10-13 and the 40-over match against the same opponents on Sunday, August 14. So you and a friend could enjoy up to five days of top-class entertainment watching the likes of Luke Wright, Murray Goodwin and Monty Panesar at Cricketfield Road.

Cricket Horsham (146-2) beat Pulborough (145) by eight wickets to stay hot on the heels of Sussex Premier Division leaders Hastings. Harwit Baidwan made 39 and Amit Suman 30 not out for the home side, but Matt Barry took 4-37 and Sam Cushing 3-30 before Will Beer hit 57 and James Johnson (pictured) 56 not out. Relegation-threatened Pulborough are 10th but have been helped by Eastbourne’s eight-point deduction for infringing ECB restrictions on young fast bowlers. Cherry Tree won the Gullick Cup for local businesses, beating Novartis by 28 runs in the final. Colin Speller took 3-10 but Cherry Tree posted 117-5 in their 15 eightball overs, thanks to 47 and 33 not out by Joe and Max Rivers. Apart from Matt Bidlake’s 20, Novartis had no answer to tight bowling from Sean Roast (4-21) and Ant Puttock (2-13).

Chris Nash has been called up by England Lions year’s Horsham Festival, at a ground where he scored a fantastic hundred for Sussex last year. The 28-year-old said: “When (national selector) Geoff Miller called me, he said: ‘You’re going to miss the Horsham Festival, I hope that’s all right!’ “It’s one of those things. If you’d offered me an England Lions call-up at the start of the Summer, I would have bitten your hand off.” Nash is part of a strong Lions squad and will be hoping to impress the selectors enough to earn a place on England’s Winter tours. He said: “Any recognition of what

you’re doing at county level is always nice. It gives you a chance to show what you’re made of, what your abilities are and how hard you have worked. It’s a great opportunity and I’m really looking forward to it.” Miller said: “The England Lions series against Sri Lanka A is an important opportunity for players to gain valuable experience against international opposition and push for further involvement in England programmes this Winter. “The series will also give players a chance to press for inclusion in the upcoming NatWest Series against India.”

Handball Mark Hawkins is joining Icelandic side UMF Afturelding to aid his development before the 2012 Olympics. The former Tanbridge House School pupil, who has been playing for Danish club HK Aarhus Nord, told BBC Sussex: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to play in the top league of such a strong country. “They develop so many good players physically and technically. It will be a great place to showcase myself. “To be involved in a professional environment and playing for a team used to developing players will improve my game before next Summer.”
