Horsham MP Francis Maude is at the centre of a national storm after being accused of encouraging the panic buying of fuel. Under the shadow of a potential strike by tanker drivers, the Cabinet Office minister said motorists should top up their tanks and store extra petrol in a jerry can, which can hold up to 20 litres (about 4.5 gallons). After Mr Maude’s remarks, internet giant Amazon reported that sales of a red

20-litre jerry can were more than 40 times normal levels, while sales of a similar container went up more than 20-fold. Long queues were reported at many petrol stations on Wednesday and yesterday (Thursday), with Tesco and Shell in Broadbridge Heath and Sainsbury’s, Horsham, among those seeing a significant increase in demand for fuel. Roads minister Mike Penning said Mr Maude’s advice had been “a mistake”, adding: “He didn’t understand the size of a jerry can. He has apologised since.” But Labour accused the Horsham MP of “panicking people all around the country” through his “incredibly irresponsible” comments. Continued on Page 2

Horsham MP fuels row Shadow treasury minister Chris Leslie told the BBC’s Newsnight: “Apparently he’s now said (the jerry can advice) was a mistake. I haven’t heard him say that. I’m not sure whether the public have as well.” Labour leader Ed Miliband called on Mr Maude and Prime Minister David Cameron to apologise, saying Mr Cameron was “presiding over a shambles on petrol”. Yesterday, energy minister Ed Davey advised motorists to fill up their

tanks when they become half-empty. Fuel tanker drivers could strike in a row over working conditions and pay. Ninety per cent of UK forecourts are supplied by about 2,000 drivers in the Unite union. Mr Maude told The Resident yesterday afternoon: “There is no imminent strike and the unions would have to give seven days’ notice of any strike, so there is no need to queue to buy petrol. “But of course people should take sensible precautions and top up their tanks when the opportunity arises.”

The future of Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre is being considered by consultants for Horsham District Council. Strategic Leisure and FMG Consulting are producing a business case to help determine the future of the centre, which senior district councillors initially wanted to close in order to save money. A range of options will be presented to councillors on May 3 before a public consultation. The final decision is due on June 27. The council says its consultants have been involved in “detailed discussions”“with users of the centre, including the Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre Joint User Group, Horsham Indoor Bowls Club and Broadbridge Heath Parish Council.

Sport England has been commissioned to undertake further work and discussions have started with national governing bodies over the future of sport and leisure in the district. Cllr Jonathan Chowen, district council Cabinet member for leisure, arts and heritage, told The Resident: “We have moved this project on significantly and there has been a lot of progress in a very short space of time. “Often out of challenges come opportunities and I am certainly beginning to see alternative options emerge, based on the sound assessment of need the consultants have been undertaking. “I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this process with time, ideas and enthusiasm.”

Rebekah’s Family Holiday Tips EASTERTIME IN BAVARIA Today I went for a lovely walk with my son, enjoying the sunshine and the beautiful wild flowers, from celandine to wood anemone, and it reminded me of the expansive wild flowers at this time of year in the Bavarian forest, in South East Germany. The Bavarian Forest is one of Germanys’ old National Parks, where nature has been left to it own devices. Carpets of white and an abundance of yellow flowers cover the landscape. If you are a lover of walking, then this is the time of year to visit Bavaria! The snow is still coating the mountain tops, with a cool breeze coming down the valleys as you enjoy your walk or bike ride along the lakes. There are free guided tours geared for themes of the season and they are child friendly too. There are plenty of campsites, hotels and all sorts of accommodation to suit your needs. If you are walking in the forest make sure you watch out for the resident bears, wolves, European bison, lynx and wild boar! But, if you love wildlife and the outdoors, this is certainly a great place to visit. Bavarian culture, and the interesting villages, are worth visiting and wondering around, with lovely window boxes crammed full of flowers. There are many Bavarian customs which are maintained during Eastertide, for example the washing of the feet on Maundy Thursday or the famous Good Friday Procession in Lohr on River Main. Make sure you enjoy some of the local beer and the white sausage called Weisswurst! So my suggestion to you, if you have not booked anything for this Easter and would like to get away, is jump in you car, or campervan, take the EuroTunnel and drive. Stop over night in Cologne, maybe enjoy a walk along the River Rhine. Then, continue to Michigan, one of the Bavarian Forest villages, and relax. In just 10 or 11 hours you are in a different world away from the noise of the city. Go and explore that beautiful part of the world and let me know what you think of it… Make your holiday how you want it - that is what’s great about having a campervan- you can tailor make it to what you want! Our holidays mostly revolve around our campervan these days - flexible, fun, and family all at once! That’s why we founded Sussex Campers a few years back. Why not come and see us, or visit our website, and see just how affordable and excellent owning your very own campervan can be? Lots of our customers have even replaced their car with a camper! Horsham does its bit for Sport Relief Runners of all ages, and even space-hopping youngsters, raised money for Sport Relief in Horsham Park. The event was held in association with Sainsbury’s, whose spokesman

said it was too early to say how much had been raised locally. Sainsbury’s Horsham raised more than £2,500 in store, with 40 employees taking part in fundraising events.

It’s a hole lot of trouble for lorry driver The driver of this lorry got more than he bargained for when he reversed into a driveway in Nuthurst Road, Monks Gate. The surface collapsed as the weight of the vehicle proved too much for an

area with a cesspit underneath it, so the lorry was eventually hoisted up by a crane on a recovery truck. A neighbour told The Resident: “The owners had no idea the cesspit extended under the driveway.”

Legal battle over Old Town Hall The Blue Flash Music Trust has filed a High Court claim against Horsham District Council. Trust treasurer Robert Mayfield, who is unhappy with the way the council is trying to sell the Old Town Hall, told The Resident: “We very much regret having to take such action. “The council says it wants to consult and listen to people, but its oftenunilateral actions speak louder than words. “We are surprised that Horsham District Council would want to trouble the High Court rather than simply consult with the neighbourhood councils whose special charge payers have traditionally subsidised the hall. “A council that cannot admit a mistake is a very dangerous council indeed. “As we have seen on the Old Town Hall issue in the last six years, they will spend thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money in what appears to us to be a vain attempt to defend the indefensible.” After Horsham District Council filed its response to the claim, Mr Mayfield added: “I am satisfied that both sides have adequately argued their position and I look forward to the court giving its esteemed guidance.”

Driver, 82, killed An 82-year-old man from Henfield was killed when the car he was driving crashed into a tree. With the death of Michael Carrington, Horsham and athletics have lost a loyal and dedicated servant. Mr Carrington, who was secretary and president of Horsham Blue Star Harriers, died on Friday last week after an unexpected heart attack. The 77-year-old always took a keen interest in sport, coaching rugby and cricket as well as athletics at Christ’s Hospital School before getting involved with Sussex Schools athletics. He was county schools secretary, championship secretary and team manager for more than a quarter of a century, and president of the Sussex

Schools Rugby Association. Mick Cole, coach and coaching secretary at Blue Star, said: “Michael was dedicated and always made himself available for athletics. He was a great ambassador, a hardworking member of the club and never had a bad word about anybody.”

He was a great ‘ambassador, a

hardworking member of the club

Thousands of athletes knew Mr Carrington as a thoughtful, competent and fair field judge at many of the top events in the South of England.

He was a 12-month-of-the-year official who helped out at cross country events in the winter and track and field events in the summer. Ever willing to keep up to date and eager to help, Mr Carrington was a founder member of the Sussex Athletics Network. Blue Star coach Kim Milnthorpe said: “He was a great support to all the athletes and was a gentle man. It is a huge loss to youth sport and he will be greatly missed at Horsham.” Mr Carrington leaves a daughter, Mary, and a son, John, along with three grandsons. Athletes across the South will miss him and his presence. Athletics, particularly in Horsham and the rest of Sussex, will not be the same without him.

As part of Easter celebrations in the run up to Piazza Italia, Horsham businesses will stage a bunny hunt from Monday, April 2, to Sunday, April 15. Accompanied pre-teenage children will be able to visit a range of shops, draw Find the Carrot cards to discover whether they have won a little treat and find which bunny is hiding in each shop. After entering the bunny’s name onto a form, children will stand a chance of winning up to £40.

This free event has been organised by the Rotary Club of Horsham in partnership with Horsham District Council. Entry forms can be printed out from www.horshamrotary.org or picked up at participating shops. Horsham Rotary Club’s Easter charity market will take place in the Carfax from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, April 1, together with an animal farm arranged by Arthur Lodge, face painting and live music on the bandstand from midday.

Changing times in Pulborough Pupils from St Mary’s Primary School buried a piece of history at Reside Developments’ new site in Lower Street, Pulborough. Reside invited the children to gather an assortment of items indicative of life in 2012, together with photographs, written information and personal ideas, for a time capsule. Reside director Brett Hamblin said: “Spurred on by the possibility that their collection could lie undiscovered for a hundred years or more, the children produced some beautifully decorated ‘tubes’ containing their written work, drawings and personal photographs. “To these they added DVDs, videos, magazines, daily newspapers, mobile phones, a school sweatshirt and information about the school and Reside Developments. “The children were a joy to work with. Their enthusiasm and wholehearted participation was wonderful and their behaviour impeccable. It could not have gone better and I hope they will remember this day for many years to come.” The sales launch for Reside Developments’ site – The Old School House and The Walled Courtyard – will take place from 11am to 3pm tomorrow (Saturday).

Top chef inspires Jordon to success Forest School pupil Jordon Powell cooked up a winning menu in the district round of the Rotary Young Chef competition. The 13-year-old, one of the youngest in the competition, wowed the judges with his three-course meal of Thai prawn soup with lemongrass, fillet of beef with salsa and cashew nut sauce, and pear poached in red wine served with orange mascarpone.

After qualifying for the regional round, Jordon said: “I was so excited to get through to the semi-final. “In the Horsham round, one of the judges was Lewis Hambleton, executive chef at the prestigious South Lodge Hotel, and he has very kindly been supporting me since that competition. “It has been amazing spending time in his kitchen, developing my skills and experience.”

Water way for children to learn Lodge Hill Centre, near Pulborough, has joined forces with Southern Water to help children and teenagers learn how to use water efficiently. The centre has two eco-lodges for groups to stay in while attending residential courses. These include green features such as a rainwater harvesting system which provides recycled rainwater for flushing the toilets. Southern Water donated £3,000 towards the cost of the system and has also provided an intelligent water meter for each lodge, allowing school students staying in them to monitor how much water they are using. Richard Evea, chair of trustees at Lodge Hill, said: “We are delighted to be working with Southern Water to raise awareness of the importance of using water wisely. “Our induction for youngsters visiting Lodge Hill includes a Waterwise talk by our staff, who have been trained by Southern Water. “This gives the students a clear

picture of how precious a resource water is and why it is vital to really think about how we use it and how we can all use less. “We then ask them to check the water meters throughout their stay in our eco-lodges so they can see how much water they are using and think about how they could reduce that amount.”

Andy Shaddick, Southern Water’s public affairs manager, said: “The water meters we have put in at the ecolodges are the same as the 500,000 meters we are installing across the South East by 2015. “These meters are the most advanced in the water industry, can be read using drive-by technology and include a leak alarm.”

Sicilian food and flair proves a recipe for success at Carmela The much-loved restaurant is about to celebrate its second anniversary with a new menu and cook book just in time for the town’s Italian extravaganza The evenings are getting lighter, the sun has had its hat on this week and the daffodils are blooming. It can only mean one thing - summer is just around the corner. And to celebrate the new season, Carmela in Horsham has launched a brand new menu, inspired as always by the fresh ingredients and tastes of Sicily. On it you will find many of the restaurant’s flagship Sicilian dishes as well as Risotto da playa, Rigatone, meatballs, swordfish, Pollo Rustico and delicious starters including courgette sticks covered in aged parmesan breadcrumbs and garlic. It’s the kind of menu that will make you feel as though you’re enjoying a break somewhere on the continent. So it’s just as well Carmela also offers an extensive wine list to choose

from to accompany your meal. The restaurant has an outside terrace where customers can bask in the sunshine we are sure to get this summer (well, we can dream). With umbrellas for shade and waiter service, you can get into the fiesta spirit with your friends and enjoy the fantastic food and drink al fresco. It’s a popular spot for just a quick glass of prosecco, afternoon of drinks and snacks or a three course evening dinner. Whatever the occasion or the reason for your visit, the team at Carmela will cater to your every whim, and like to think of themselves as your host, welcoming you into their home. Speaking of the team at Carmela, the restaurant was opened by Francesco Raciti along with his sister Rossella. Together they created somewhere that paid homage to the traditional and authentic foods of their ancestors, with an emphasis on quality and exceptional service. It is a recipe that seems to have worked. Almost two years since it opened Carmela is more popular than ever and is one of the town’s more recent success stories. Launched mid-recession, Carmela has proven that despite a poor economic climate, there is still an appetite for great, wholesome, well prepared food in a relaxed environment. Surviving through what has been one of the worst recessions in history is a testament to Carmela’s commitment to quality and its customers. The restaurant celebrates its second birthday this summer and has also recently been refurbished inside. As an employer of around 10

members of staff, Carmela has also contributed to local employment and today, the ethos remains the same as always. Rossella said: “We opened Carmela with one clear goal – to bring the ‘fantastico’ food of Sicily to Horsham. “We wanted to give people something different, and for every one of our customers to experience fresh, delicious food in a welcoming, friendly restaurant that was owned independently by local people. I like to think we have kept that promise and that we just keep getting better.” Everyone at Carmela is getting geared up for the Italian festival, Piazza Italia, which will be held in Horsham town centre over Easter weekend on Friday April 6, Saturday, April 7 and Monday, April 9.

We opened Carmela ‘with one clear goal – to bring the ‘fantastico’ food of Sicily to Horsham

The event will be a celebration of all things Italian and includes a threeday market, rallies with cars such as Mini and Ferrari and a wine tasting tour. What better time to visit Carmela? To coincide with the Piazza Italia festival, the restaurant has launched a new cook book, including recipes you can use to create Sicilian dishes in your own kitchen. Many of them have been created by owner and chef Francesco and some are even top secret recipes passed down by his mother, after whom his restaurant is named. You can buy the book at a stand at the festival and proceeds will go to charity.

Rotary Club is really making a difference The Rotary Club of Horsham received 86 requests in the first year of its Making a Difference scheme. Sixty-six of the requests were fulfilled, with donations totalling more than £13,200, and 51 needy families were additionally supported with a total of £2,500 at Christmas. Rotary Club treasurer John Le Rossignol said: “The vast majority of requests that were fulfilled only needed small sums of money to purchase essential needs, usually for children or single mums.

“In one case, only £20 was needed to enable a young man to be able to travel to see his dying father. “The nature of the scheme really brought home the difficult issues facing many people who live in Horsham. “Most residents only see the pleasant side of this small market town, but the recession has badly impacted many families who are now reliant on local charities and agencies to provide the basics of life. “The scheme’s larger beneficiaries included the

Queen Elizabeth II School, who acquired a special chair which incorporates scales to enable correct dosage of medicines, You Can Do It and the Phoenix Stroke Club. “Not all requests required donations, some purely required advice or manpower from the Rotarians. One request from a local care home simply required the loan of a large TV so that the residents could watch the Royal Wedding together. “All requests receive an immediate response and a decision is generally made within a few days, even within a few hours in the case of really urgent needs. “So remember Rotary’s Making a

Difference scheme if you know anyone who really needs a little help to make their life a little brighter.”

Remember Rotary’s scheme if you know anyone who really needs a little help

The scheme, which was launched on the front page of The Resident, will continue for at least another year. Applications can be made via www.horshamrotary.org.uk

Remembering Simon Viney Children’s rights in spotlight A charity rugby sevens tournament will be held at Barns Green in memory of a player who died at the age of just 22. Horsham resident Simon Viney, who played for the village’s second team, died from a pulmonary edema related to a heart condition, just before Christmas in 2009. The Simon Viney Memorial tournament will take place on the village green from 12.30pm on Sunday, May 20. Proceeds will go to the Queen Elizabeth II School and The Wooden Spoon, a rugby-based charity for physically and socially disadvantaged children. For more information, contact Phil Kemp on phil.kemp@tesco.net

The Children’s Commissioner, Dr Maggie Atkinson, spoke about the UN Declaration of Human Rights for Children when she visited Farlington School. Jane Williams, head of Years 10 and 11, said: “Dr Atkinson demanded that the girls think seriously about their rights and the rights of all children. “She spoke about herself and how she got the post of Children’s Commissioner and was truly inspirational as well as thought-provoking.”

Volunteers needed to help families Home-Start CHAMS needs more volunteers to help look after vulnerable families with at least one child aged under five. More than 60 volunteers, all mums with specialised training, meet with their allocated families for two or three hours per week and offer confidential support in Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex. Office manager Sarah O’Connell said: “We support families in a wide variety of situations, including abuse, isolation, financial hardship, disability, bereavement, multiple births or those just finding parenting a struggle. “Since 1998, we have supported over 1,500 families and there are always more asking for help than we can deal with. “We are encountering higher levels of need at a time when our traditional sources of funding are under threat, but we are determined to survive and even expand our services. “Our staff team is very small – one full-time and four part-time workers to cover the whole area – so we need help. “Can you help us to approach charitable trusts and foundations, the corporate sector or run fundraising and profile-raising events? “Do you have any marketing, fundraising or other expertise you could offer? You would be very warmly welcomed and appreciated by a hardworking and committed team.” CHAMS has organised a ladies’ accessories sale at St John the Evangelist Church Hall, Springfield Road, Horsham, from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, April 21.

Models required for fashion show Staff at Bonmarche, West Street, Horsham, are organising their third fashion show, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The event will take place on Thursday, April 12 and the clothes store is again looking for models to strut their stuff on the catwalk. Manager Sarah Fenton said: “Ladies volunteered last time we held a fashion show. “It went so well we thought we’d ask the ladies of Horsham to once again volunteer their time for Macmillan and for a fun evening.”

Police stumped? Burglars broke into the pavilion at Henfield Cricket Club, taking items including an auto rake and reel, tool box, trolley and ratchet tool set. Cricket club tracksuit tops, featuring the letters HCC and a picture of a hen, were also stolen. Anyone with information can phone police on 101, quoting serial 168 of March 19.

Don’t forget our veterans’ pensions Jim Monaghan Equality for Veterans Association

The issue of public service pensions has been very much to the fore in the media over recent weeks, yet there is one body of public servants who continue to be denied any pension whatsoever. Affected veterans of the UK Armed Forces when serving did not work normal office hours (indeed invariably worked very unsocial hours), were often separated from their families, had no right to withdraw their labour or take any form of industrial action, and were prepared to

ETERNITY RINGS Eternity rings feature gemstones set to form a circle either halfway or all the way around the finger. Being a symbol of never-ending love, eternity rings are traditionally given by a husband to his wife as a gift to commemorate their wedding anniversary or to celebrate the birth of a child, or basically on any occasion when the husband decides to proclaim his love again.

We are entitled to ask why this self-aggrandising measure is slipped into the package and whether you can in all conscience vote for it. And of course the argument that top earners evade the tax cannot possibly apply to Members of Parliament.

Indirect contributions towards the future payment of pensions have always been taken as part of the annual pay award formula devised by the Armed Forces pay review body, the sum of such contribution which would otherwise have been paid in the salaries of servicemen and women. We are all aware of the current parlous state of the UK economy and that any sizeable reduction in the budget deficit will not come overnight. However, government claims that to allow settlement of this long outstanding issue would simply be unaffordable do not stand scrutiny. The true cost would in practice be much less than claimed by HM Treasury and is very affordable. It all boils down to where public expenditure priorities lie. Service veterans do not appear to warrant any consideration. lay down their lives in defence of UK national interests. The Forgotten Veterans’ pleas to government for a meaningful discussion of these matters have continued to be ignored for well over 20 years. The good news is that earlier this month the inaugural meeting of an all-party parliamentary group, to discuss the inequality in Armed Forces pensions, was held. The group of MPs – 10 from the government benches and 10 from the opposition – is to be chaired by Katy Clark (Labour). The group secretary is Sir Bob Russell MP (Liberal Democrat), who has been our champion in the House of Commons for the past two years. Service leavers pre-April 1975 receive no pension benefit. Those leaving from April 1975 onwards qualify for a preserved pension prorata their service, on reaching state retirement age. There is a great body of evidence which shows that both pre and post April 1975 service leavers were not kept informed of pension scheme changes or of their likely entitlement.

A great deal seems to have been written about people’s concerns that, due to subsidy cuts, some reductions in bus services are proposed. Negativity seems always to be news. Regrettably little has been written about the very significant

improvements in reliability, timekeeping, supervision and information at the bus station, real-time information at bus stops and now a fleet of brand new buses, since Metro took over the running of most of the Horsham buses. It seems that these positive improvements in town services have been taken for granted. Come on Horsham, say thank you Metro, well done.

Francis Maude must think we’re all stupid Simon Clare @faithlesseye

Francis Maude MP was wheeled out in defence of the Conservative Party on Monday, after the resignation of Peter Cruddas who had been secretly recorded claiming that, for a fee, he could arrange both access to the Prime Minister and consideration during Tory policy discussions. Questioned by Evan Davis on the Today programme, Maude confirmed

that one could expect to meet David Cameron for a payment to the party of £100k or £200k. Maude then went on to say that there was “nothing remotely improper about that, or new, and all parties do that”. When challenged about this statement, Maude asked “What’s improper about that?” The Conservative Party does not differ from the other major parties in requiring money from donors or in offering incentives. But if Francis Maude truly doesn’t understand why voters might see something wrong with Prime Ministerial access being up for sale then he is either hilariously naive or living in

his own parallel reality. As I don’t think either of these is the case, I suspect that he doesn’t actually believe there’s nothing that could be perceived as improper about it after all. Judging by what he went on to say, I think I may be right. At the start of the interview, Maude apparently fails to see any problem with the concept of money purchasing access to political leaders, but by the end he seems to recognise the problem after all – at least when talking about the Labour Party. Maude attempted to cast doubt on the integrity of Labour’s dealings with the unions in just the same way that he was being questioned about

his party’s integrity in relation to big business. It seems that Maude only thinks paying cash for access is improper when it is the Labour Party doing it. No double standards there then. Maude squirmed inexplicably when asked to justify the party’s intention not to publish a list of party donors who have dined with the PM. He could give no good reason for it because no good reason exists, and a few hours later the Tories had indeed published it. Quite why Maude thought this point was worth defending is beyond me. Did he not know that his party was going to publish the list anyway,

as we all suspected it would? If he didn’t know, why was he put forward for the interview. And if he did know, what on Earth did he think he would gain by arguing on the side of not publishing? He was clearly put up by the Tories in an attempt to play down the importance of the story. But through his clumsy refusal to acknowledge any legitimate concerns he succeeded only in reinforcing the growing belief that politicians think we are stupid. One can only hope that the kind of intellectual contempt exhibited in this interview is reciprocated by his constituents next time he asks them to vote for him.

Why the political party system is out of date Nik Butler www.loudmouthman.com

@loudmouthman

While my last article (some may say ‘rant’) was focused on money lenders and the financial institutions who have changed little and broken much, this week I wish to talk about an aspect of politics which is quickly becoming a vestigal organ in a modern body of government. Allow me to provide some context.

I am a parish councillor for North Horsham and I represent the constituents of Roffey North. I tend to consider the role of parish councillor as being on the first rung of the ‘elected officials’ ladder. As a parish councillor you represent yourself as an ‘independent’ or ‘non-political’ candidate, which allows you to listen to issues without a need to consider the role of a party or that party’s policies. As you climb up the ladder of government from parish to district, then county, and upwards towards Parliament, the role of the independent councillor diminishes and in its place

political parties drive the larger part of the apparent decision-making process. The party system has been successful for Britain and has formed much of the social structure of communities across the UK. The benefits of running a party system and the opportunity to raise funds, as well as co-ordinating policy, at a time when communication between the counties was a slow affair, are clear from an organisational point of view. Having political parties makes it easier to define issues in terms of Team A versus Team B.

Newspapers can publish articles on the basis of a ‘party’ or an issues group and the media can generalise an issue in term of ‘the Left’ or ‘the Right’. Parties make life easier for the writer when they need to create competition and build arguments. For my part, having been a member of the Conservative Party and then the Liberal Democrats, I left both when I realised that much of what can be achieved in society no longer requires the party process. Similarly I have been disillusioned by the tendency of parties, those in power and those awaiting a majority,

to ride roughshod over matters which benefit a group or a community in favour of the internal machinations or individual agendas within the party itself. I have been asked if there was one party whose policies I could align myself with. This leaves me wondering why there is an ingrained ‘need’ to identify a candidate in terms of their tribe or party allegiances. The party system creates environments which are now archaic in relation to a society which can communicate and enable decisions at speeds which ‘top-down’ hierarchies cannot control. Party membership across the political spectrum has been dwindling, though the interest in how our council and government services are managed continues to increase. It is not a lack of interest in politics but a lack of trust in how parties will act. People are talking to each other in a variety of methods and they will not wait to be told what to think. They should not wait on the press and they cannot wait for a party, nor for the pulpit to inform them of issues which must concern them. Advertising and media headlines no longer generate long-term outrage. In place of these traditional platforms have come blogs, Twitter conversations and Facebook groups. Mobile messaging is creating a leaner collection of groups who, with the timely arrival of the Localism Bill, are likely to see an opportunity in changing policy for their communities. It may be that the party will soon be over and the rise of the individual voice may change the shape of our future, our councils and our government. But it will take each person to realise that they do not have to pick a team to achieve their goals.

Range of expertise gives added value to clients Two partners at Spofforths, the accountancy and tax specialist, explain why a wealth of knowledge means they are first choice when it comes to clients’ money matters Whether your business is a small sole trader or a large multinational corporation, it pays to ensure your inances and taxes are in order. Not only will it mean you develop a successful, proitable business but can help you plan ahead to protect your company against a dificult economic climate or other factors that contribute to inancial problems. Sarah Ediss and Richard Spofforth at Spofforths know better than anyone how crucial it is to ensure your inances are well looked after, so that you can focus on other important business matters. The pair has a combined 30 years’ experience working at the irm of chartered accountants and tax specialists. Sarah said: “We have developed a great deal of knowledge over the years, which helps us give invalu-

able advice to clients. “We know the scenarios businesses can get themselves into and can guide them accordingly. Plus at Spofforths we beneit from having various specialist services. So we can draw upon the skills of people with legal and VAT knowledge who also work in-house.” Sarah and Richard provide a proactive service and they say that it doesn’t matter about the size or type of business you have. “We have clients ranging from a sole trader right up to multi-million pound multinational businesses. Whether they already have a competent inance director or hand over all their receipts and expenses to us, we can help them be more tax eficient and in turn, proitable”, Richard told The Resident. Richard is managing partner at Spofforths – a irm that his grand-

father established. He has worked at the company for 17 years having trained in the city. He added: “People trust Spofforths as we have been here for decades. Our clients value the depth of knowledge that comes with that and this is why so many of them are loyal customers and choose to work with us. “I believe in the services we provide too. From the beginning it is important to have the correct tax structure in place. And whether it’s a new or existing business, those organisations that put together a well-planned strategy, with achievable budgets and seek good advice will thrive. And they will come out the other end of any recession in a better position”. Sarah said: “We tailor our service to our client. Some clients simply want us to help them establish processes that

enable them to self-manage their inances and tax.” Spofforths clients beneit from the irm’s expertise in tax, VAT, wealth management and inheritance and tax planning. The irm is also a member of the ICAEW and participates in its Business Advice Service by offering free initial consultations for SMEs and business start-ups. Richard added: “Ultimately, clients who come to

Westall, has designed two ‘egg-stra’ special lavours to celebrate the holiday, the irst being a traditional lavour, ‘Simnel Brownie’ which is handmade, using all the usual ingredients such as dark chocolate and Fresh local eggs, along with British sugar, butter and lour, but with added plump sultanas, marzipan and selected spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg, to give this brownie an Easter twist. The second, an original chocolate brownie for those who like fuss free foods, but ‘Egg-stravagantly topped with mini chocolate eggs. The Easter Bunny would be proud! The 1st of April is a landmark for ‘Just Brownies’ as it celebrates its irst year in business. Many thanks to the fantastic support at the Horsham market, where come rain or shine people come and purchase brownies. Just brownies can now be found at various retail outlets, such as Village larder in Washington, Budgens of Henield, Swains farm shop, The Crown Inn at Dial Post and the Union Jack Farm Shop in Cowfold. I would like to thank all those who have supported me in my irst year (especially on those very cold market days which now seem a lifetime away!) What does the future hold for Just Brownies? Carrying the ethos of ‘handmade and quality’ and using local ingredients, there comes a time when we either decide to expand by employing staff and using industrial equipment, or stay as we are. We’ve all see businesses that have taken this step and lost that ‘Cottage industry’ handmade feel that I am so passionate about. I’d much prefer to be a local independent supplier, baking brownies that ooze quality, rather than quantity. To order brownies online go to www.justbrownies.co.uk

Businessman to speak at prestigious garden event A local businessman has been invited to speak at the House and Gardens London Spirit of Summer exhibition at Olympia. James Rylands, co-founder of Summer Place Auctions, will be advising visitors on how to make the most of their gardens at the event in May. Mr Rylands said: “I hope by attending I can promote West Sussex as a place to visit, not just because of its historical places of interest such as Petworth and Cowdray, but also as a place to view historical and modern garden art in our walled six acres of landscaped gardens at Summers Place. “Garden art should be accessible to all that wish to make their gardens special.” Summers Place Auctions, in Billingshurst, is building a new gallery to house some of its smaller items at a forthcoming auction on May 22.

The business benefits of bookkeeping online Claim your free trial and discount

It’s a Vet’s Life Living in the beautiful Sussex and Surrey countryside, horses are a common sight to many and are a popular pet amongst people. They are magniϔicent creatures and provide a great deal of pleasure to their owners. However, it is important to be aware that whilst horses may seem invincible, they still need a great deal of care and attention. The vets at Arthur Lodge Veterinary Surgery were recently called out to Pepper after his worried owner spotted a cut on his leg. Wounds on a horse’s leg need to be treated as soon as they are irst noticed to stop them developing into sarcoids. Sarcoids are a common form of skin cancer in the UK horse population. The most common areas for sarcoids are on the axilla, groin, face, scrotum and sheath. Sarcoids around the eyes and over oints are more dificult to treat. They can remain static for many months or years but can increase in size or ‘spread’ to other sites on the body. There are 6 different types of sarcoids and each has a different treatment and prognosis so it is important to establish which particular one is affecting the horse in question. They rarely resolve on their own and will continue to get worse so it is important to seek the correct advice as soon as possible. Flies may play a role in the spread of them from one area to another on a horse so it’s important to use ly control, particularly in the summer months. Despite years of research, there is still a lot that is unknown about this disease but if you have any concerns at all about your horse, the best thing to do is to get it checked over. Pepper is a perfect example of this as he is now enoying life in the ields once again, ready for the summer sunshine.

Horsham operatic society set to stage The Mikado Final rehearsals are now underway for multi award-winning local operatic society HAODS’ forthcoming production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, The Mikado. Director Stephen Gadd and MD Mags Fisher have gathered together a talented cast of experienced company and guest singers and musicians for the production. HAODS has opted for traditional staging , costumes and music for The Mikado.

However the surreal topsy-turvey nature of the piece is done full justice by the team so watch out for the ballet-dancing sumo wrestlers, on-stage origami and flower arranging with a twist - and the most bizarre game of pass the parcel ever performed at any theatre. The show runs from April 17 to 21 at The Capitol, Horsham. Tickets are £12 to £15. To book call the box office on 01403 750220 or visit www. thecaptiolhorsham.com

Rarely does such an eagerly anticipated film live up to its own hype like The Hunger Games. I had heard quite a lot about it. The movie studio billed the film as an epic, and it was widely considered to be the Avatar/Twilight/Transformers of 2012. It is all those combined and then some. Based on the first of a trilogy of books, it’s easy to understand the comparisons to the Twilight series. Don’t get them confused. Much like its leading lady, the Hunger Games relies on skill and sophistication rather than a whining, puppy-dog-eyed teenage vampire lover. I doubt Bella would last five minutes in the woods with a bow and arrow. The film was a big risk for its small production company, Lionsgate. But they didn’t play it safe, with a cast of unknowns and investment in

stunning sets and costumes. The fact that it was a book first meant the plot kept my interest for its two-hour running time. And although its concept is simple, I was impressed by how many surprises there were in the storyline. Which, by the way, follows Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl who lives in a future where the capital city rules over what was formerly North America. Under a brutally strict regime, every year they televise The Hunger Games – in which a boy and a girl from each of the 12 districts must fight to the death, until one remains victorious. Arguably there is a political undertone and it highlights the effect of a voyeuristic culture that fuels the media. But putting that deep analysis to one side, if you go to the movies for sheer entertainment, to see good battle evil and witness a heroin rise from a coal mining village to attempt to become a national treasure and in turn stay alive, you will love this film – and be hungry for more.

Bill Oddie goes wild at The Capitol

Well-known wildlife man Bill Oddie and his producer Stephen Moss will be sharing stories and memories of their career over the past 15 years at The Capitol on Tuesday, April 24. T J Higgs demonstrates psychic powers in new show

Tracy Higgs is a psychic medium and she will be showcasing her talents in Horsham at The Capitol on Wednesday, April 25. The medium rose to fame quickly and has been very successful in the last five years. She has numerous TV appearances under her belt including slots on Destiny TV, The Xtra Factor, The Three Mediums and Colin Fry Live with T J Higgs. Back in 2005, she was asked to do a reading for Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall on Richard and Judy so she is popular with royalty and celebrities alike. The two books she’s had published are also among her achievements. Her debut book, Living with the Gift, was hugely successful worldwide and her second book, Signs from the Afterlife reached number 28 on The

Sunday Times Bestsellers list. Tracy says that it was a childhood experience that kick started her career. When she was about two or three, her great granddad passed away and she could still see him. Tracy believes that being different as a child and the challenges that she faced were an essential part in making her the medium she is today. She is a bubbly and kind medium and does more than just deliver her shows, she supports fans by text and email as she thinks this is an important part of her job as a medium. See her for yourself next month. The show begins at 7.30pm and tickets are £17.50, concessions £15.50. To book call the box office on 01403 750220 or visit www.thecapitolhorsham.com

How to sparkle in this diamond year Julia Martin Health & Lifestyle

julia.martin@the-resident.co.uk

It’s official: This is going to be a diamond year. The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations set the tone for a glorious summer, so let’s ensure we have a girl’s best friend to hand, in some form or another. The diamond symbolises strength and beauty in equal measure and this seems to be a good goal for the year. So if you cannot stretch to a solitaire or necklace, try to commemorate the year by becoming stronger and sparkling at every event.

The sun has made a welcome entrance, so with some judicious sunbathing we can create a glow which adds glamour to our pasty, wintertired skin. Add some exercise and you are halfway there. Swimming, walking or running is so much easier when the sun is shining, and the benefits will make it easier to venture out when the weather is not so good. The onset of British Summertime has sprung us into action and every pavement seems to be full of runners jostling for position, like the beginning of the Grand National. So get out there and join in and don’t fall at the first fence. I am going to share a few tips on how to shine in company and make

new friends this week as the spring is a great time to meet new people. Achieving confidence in yourself is a major step to success in every area of life and there are many opportunities to learn the skills of personal impact and charisma. You can outshine the competition at interviews and parties by simply employing some of the secrets of body language and open conversation. One amazing fact is that the second major fear in life, only topped by drowning, is speaking in public. Having the confidence to believe what you say is the first hurdle to overcome. If you believe in something strongly and are good at it, you

Spring clean and declutter your mind Spring has well and truly sprung after this week’s glorious weather. We all feel happier and extra motivated when the sun is shinning so take advantage of this and spend a little time on getting your thoughts and feelings in order. We spring clean the house and garden, so why not give your mind a spring clean too and see how much better the world looks. Are you one of those people who push worries and anxieties to the back of your mind hoping they will sort themselves out? Only to realise a while later that they are still there and causing you just as much, if not more upset. Or maybe there is something that is having a negative effect on your life and you don’t know how to move on. If we suppress our worrying thoughts and feelings instead of dealing with them in a healthy way, they do tend to stick around and fester, eating away at our happiness and enjoyment of life. Health & Lifestyle

Enjoy working out in Horsham park with Sussex Bootcamps Sophia Moir Health & Lifestyle Twitter - @smoir

If the glorious Spring weather has tempted you to go outside and enjoy the sun, then there’s no better time to join Sussex Bootcamps and enjoy workout sessions with friendly, highly qualiied itness professionals within Horsham’s stunning park. I know what you’re thinking – bootcamp is military style, complete with warpaint and camoulage clothing! This is not what you’ll ind at Sussex Bootcamps. They offer 3 sessions

a week, lasting just under an hour each, with friendly, highly qualiied itness professionals who are passionate about health and itness. Having attended Sussex Bootcamps myself, I can vouch for the fact that the coaches helped me to not only get it, but also change my eating habits, which were holding me back from achieving my ultimate weight loss goals. Sussex Bootcamps co-owner Ben Davis says the emphasis on diet and nutrition, alongside regular workouts outside in the fresh air, is what sets Sussex Bootcamps apart. It’s like having your own personal trainer at your beck and call, and the coaches are on hand to coach you to

help your achieve your goals. It’s no coincidence that many of its clients return year after year. Flo Holt, a 21 year old Client Administrator from Horsham has been attending Sussex Bootcamps for over 2 years. She says, “I like going to Sussex Bootcamps because it gets you out after work, and you get some fresh air. Not to mention that the instructors are fantastic!” Since joining Sussex Bootcamps, Flo has started training for the Brighton Marathon – something she feels Sussex Bootcamps have helped her to achieve - “Sussex Bootcamps has been an invaluable part of my training,” she says.

The trainers are so ‘encouraging and it’s such a supportive atmosphere

The people that attend Sussex Bootcamps are from different walks of life, but they all have one thing in common - they all want to get it. Ian Passmore, 43, works in the motor trade and has been attending Sussex Bootcamps for just over a year. He says one of the reasons he keeps

coming back to Sussex Bootcamps is because he loves meeting different people. “I love the camaraderie of the sessions! Before Sussex Bootcamps, I was fat and unit. I’d hit that middle age lethargic stage of doing nothing. Now I’ve got my competitive spirit back again.” He says that Sussex Bootcamps has changed his life, and it could change yours, too, “You’ll thoroughly enjoy it – it’s fun!” Sussex Bootcamp workouts vary per session, but they all start with a warm up, before a combination of body toning exercises which help boost your metabolism, and short blasts of cardio to keep your heart

rate up, before cooling down. You can always work at your own pace, and if there’s something you’ve not done before, the coaches will teach you the correct technique. Ben says that regular clients can expect to achieve a total body transformation, and Sussex Bootcamps’ member Jim Richards (a 45-year-old Civil Servant) agrees, “You get hooked on it – seriously! Before Sussex Bootcamps I was less enthusiastic about exercise and less it generally. “Now I just feel better about myself. The trainers are so encouraging and it’s such a supportive atmosphere.” In his words, don’t be afraid to give it a try - “You’ve got nothing to lose!”

Brock Taylor shortlisted in regional estate agent awards Brock Taylor has been shortlisted as a TOP 10 Estate Agent in the South East Region of the Estate & Letting Agent Awards. The ESTAS determines the best estate agents in the country through research carried out amongst customers who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their agent. A record 33,000 questionnaires were completed by customers during the competition. Agents have been shortlisted in 17 regions around the country. The regional and national winners will be announced by Phil Spencer, the TV Property expert at the 9th annual ESTAS ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane on April 20. Phil says “I think it says a great deal about company who’s prepared to stand up and announce to customers and competitors that they believe in providing the best possible service and they’re happy to prove it. “These awards help agencies to focus on customer service levels and that’s why so many sign up each year”. “The ESTAS competition is about recognising the hard work agents put in every day, week and month of the year” says Simon Brown who runs the national scheme. “So to be shortlisted is a great accolade for any agent”. Peter Maskell, a Director of Brock Taylor said “We are absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for the ESTAS 2012. “It means so much to us as we know it’s our customers who have taken the time to report on the service that they received from Brock Taylor. “We take our levels of customer service very seriously because we know clients have a choice. We have always been very proud of the personal service we provide and this is great way to demonstrate how good we really are.” Peter further commented “We have enjoyed a very successful start to 2012, with our sales and lettings departments signiicantly ahead compared to the same period in 2011. :However the market is still challenging with a limited number of good quality new instructions coming to the market. “Therefore we are always keen to speak to anyone who is looking to sell or rent their property and hope that this further endorsement of our service will give even greater conidence to potential clients to contact us .” Brock Taylor are based at 2/4 East Street, Horsham, RH12 1HL and can be contacted on 01403 272022 or you can visit them online at www. brocktaylor.co.uk.

Property

Will the budget affect the property market? Neil Moore, Managing Director of Guy Leonard & Company, gives his thoughts on the 2012 Budget.

Sa Sa t L l Fr urd a om a un es y 11 , 31 ch am st – Ma 3p rc m h

Spare a thought for the poor millionaire now forced, through this year’s UK Budget, to pay more for the privilege of using central London’s booming luxury property market as a safe haven for his investment funds, away from unhealthy currencies. Spare a thought also for homegrown millionaires in other UK property hot spots. They too will be caught in this new 7% Stamp Duty trap of the Chancellor’s making. Any attempting to escape is futile – tunnelling under the higher tax barrier through the means of an offshore or foreign company has been stopped by way of a massive 15% Stamp Duty. Will this have much impact on the property market generally? Not really, as the early introduction of these measures leaves no room for a mansion-tax-beating rush to buy, and this is a one-off measure aimed at those who really should be able to afford it. So the impact on sector values should be negligible. All in all this new measure will probably be met with a sigh of resignation rather than a decision to spend a million or two less, just to avoid the extra tax. But do expect to see fewer houses on the market at £2.1 million and more at £1.99 million. And, who

knows, perhaps this top level of stamp duty could even become a trendy new status symbol for the wealthy. Of greater significance is how the Budget affects the rest of the property market. Apart from the small tax benefit to the lower paid there seems little in the Budget to stimulate much greater activity, save for a few small pieces of new legislation that somehow fit into the jumbo jigsaw that is our nation’s fiscal recovery. But perhaps the Chancellor has taken the view, “physician heal thyself”. Under the radar of the British property press (which is none too sensitive) the market in many places has quietly been perking up. There have been rumours of first time buyers – tempted out of hiding before the end of their own special tax relief; also, even one or two mortgages have been granted. Up and down the country many estate agents cautiously report increased sales figures. This means several things: buyers are on the move and agents are valuing reasonably. Most importantly, sellers are listening to reason rather than the little voice of avarice that we all have, but which needs to be mastered when selling property in sluggish conditions. The government’s move to relax

the building rules in rural areas could vie for attention with the Budget. This should be of concern to everyone as it is our heritage which could be under threat of concrete. Visions of bulldozers parked on the village green will cause outrage. And when developers, who through the Budget will now receive some extra funding for new homes, meet head to head with Britons-in-bloom there will be strife. And there should be. But this relaxation may bring new life to struggling rural communities as well as providing much-needed housing. So it will be very much up to local planners to prevent a 1960s style architectural catastrophe. Also the public will need to demand thermally efficient, economical, affordable but stylishly attractive and appropriate homes which will sit comfortably in a rustic environment. So, the verdict on the 2012 budget, as far as the property market is concerned, seems to be neutral!

Recently enlarged, detached chalet

Guy Leonard & Company is pleased to bring to the market a delightful three bedroom detached chalet style residence with detached single garage and ample parking located in the popular village of West Chiltington. Offers announced for new Citroën C1 Olli Nott Motors Editor

olli@the-resident.co.uk

To celebrate the New C1’s launch on April 2, Citroën has announced that all New C1 models attract a £1,000 Citroën Reward, meaning OTR prices start from just £6,995. In addition, VTR models are available from just £99 per month with Elect 4 Personal Lease, including one year’s free insurance for drivers aged 21-75. The free insurance offer is also available on VTR models funded with Elect 3 finance. Appealing to a wide range of drivers, Citroën’s New C1 is stylish, frugal - up to 65.7mpg on the combined cycle - and practical, ideal for nimble urban driving. Yet it is spacious enough for four adults with a plethora of storage compartments. Environmentally considerate, the New Citroën C1 boasts CO2 emissions from just 99g/km, making it

exempt from the London congestion charge and 1st year Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) which is exactly what we all want to hear right now! As well as being the first Citroën petrol model to emit less than 100g/ km of CO2, the New Citroën C1 is well specified, even from the entrylevel VT trim. VTR versions add daytime running LEDs, air conditioning and electric front windows. The VTR+ trim also includes 14” alloy wheels, Connecting Box (Bluetooth® & USB socket), front fog lights, leather steering wheel and dark tinted windows. Drop by Broadbridge Heath Citroën and pre-order yours now!

Fill up on fuel-saving advice from Stevens Vauxhall Local dealer, Stevens Vauxhall in Crawley and Horsham, is encouraging parents to brush up on their eco driving tips ahead of the Easter holidays, following a survey commissioned by the leading carmaker which revealed that fuel consumption was rated as the top frustration by parents when playing taxi to their kids. Indeed, 100% of parents in the South East said that they will be ferrying the children around over the Easter break. What’s more, a massive 75% revealed they don’t currently take fuelsaving measures on short journeys, such as turning off their engine in congestion and avoiding harsh acceleration or breaking. According to The AA, short journeys are most likely to increase a vehicle’s fuel consumption and with Vauxhall’s survey revealing that almost half of parents will be driving 10 miles or less each time they take

to the road this Easter, Stevens Vauxhall is on hand to help local drivers cut costs. Peter Stevens, Managing Director at Stevens Vauxhall, comments: “With a quarter of parents in the South East likely to make at least 5 trips with their kids over the bank holiday alone, we would really like to help them make this Easter a more economical one, by offering some simple tips on how to reduce fuel consumption ahead of this busy period. “Making sure that your vehicle is serviced and maintained correctly is very important for best efficiency – but your own driving style can have a marked effect on emissions and fuel consumption too. “Keeping your tyres at the correct pressures and driving at correct and constant speeds are effective ways of helping to avoid excessive fuel consumption. “Harsh acceleration and revving your engine also wastes fuel and

The family-friendly Vauxhall Meriva ecoFLEX

increases CO2 emissions, whilst a prolonged stationary period with the engine running is wasteful too. So, if you anticipate being stationary for more than three minutes, turn your engine off.” For example; queuing on the motorway, in a jam in town or even at a railway crossing.

Other tips from Stevens Vauxhall include: • Plan your journeys well to avoid getting lost and wasting unnecessary fuel • Turn the air conditioning off or down on short journeys or on journeys at low speed • Turn your heated rear windscreen and headlights off when you don’t need them • Aim to have your car serviced regularly and according to the manufacturer’s schedule, in order for it to maintain engine efficiency • If you have any items in your boot that you’re not using, take them out, as more weight means increased fuel consumption. And if you have a roof box fitted that you don’t need, remove that too! For parents keen to cut fuel costs and lower their emissions, Vauxhall’s innovative ecoFLEX range of vehicles features the most fuel-efficient, lowCO2 emitting cars ever produced by the manufacturer, which not only ease the conscience of environmentally aware drivers, but also help to save money with reduced fuel consumption. Available at Stevens Vauxhall, the innovative and spacious new Meriva ecoFLEX is an ideal choice for families keen to reduce their environmental impact and reap cost-saving rewards. With the option of Vauxhall’s latest development of Start/Stop

technology, it offers real benefits by increasing fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions, achieved by automatically stopping the engine at traffic lights or in congestion and then restarting once the clutch is pressed. The system can be deactivated

manually when needed and the technology provides a simple solution for eco-friendly driving. To find out more about Vauxhall’s ecoFLEX range available from Stevens Vauxhall go online to www.stevensvauxhall.co.uk/vauxhall

Zak, Harry and Dean give manager grounds for hope 76 points is the aim Andy Stonestreet www.northwestsussexseagulls.co.uk

Boss Simon Colbran is looking forward with optimism after watching 16-year-olds Zak Comber and Harry Smith make their debuts at the weekend. With Dean O’Keefe just a year older, Colbran is keen to help the exciting trio develop as he plans for next season in Division 1 South of the Ryman League. The former Redhill manager said: “You can look at Saturday in a couple of ways. We had six players out and you would probably say that most of them would have started if they’d

been available. “However, it gave us a chance to take a look at some of the youngsters and I don’t think any of them let themselves down. “With a bit more luck it could have been us going in (at half time) at 1-0 up. It was another disappointing goal, where we’ve given the guy a yard of space and we’ve got punished for it so we’ll have to keep working hard on getting tighter.

Harry Smith makes his debut

“In the second half, at 1-0 down and with no experience to bring off the bench, it was always going to be dificult for us. I thought everyone gave 100 per cent. “We inished the match with two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old on the pitch, but it was a brilliant opportunity for them. I took them to one side after the game and told them they could all be proud of themselves. “What’s encouraging is that they all want to stay on for next season, which is great for us as a club because you don’t always need to spend a lot of money on players when you have talent on your own doorstep. “There’s no point bringing in new players only for them to leave in the

summer, so these boys could end up getting a few more games under their belts in the next month or so. “Wherever I’ve been I’ve always brought through at least two youth team players every season, so lads like Harry, Zak and Dean will always have a chance of progressing. “When the others see their mates breaking into the side it will give them the encouragement to work even harder. “We want to be able to attract the best young players around. Giving some of them the chance to show what they can do in the irst team will hopefully work in our favour. “There’s certainly plenty to look forward to.”

Look out for these lads, says Royals boss Matthew James and Matt Streeter Youth Football

Royal United U16 manager Richard Chaplin has tipped his players for a bright future after they ended the league season unbeaten. Alex Parsons (two), Stanley Rice and Luke Polie scored as Royals beat Roffey Robins Wanderers U16 4-1 in Division A of the Horsham and District Youth League. Jacob Waller was Royals’ man of the

match, while Connor Cushing helped run the game from central midield. Chaplin said: “The squad have again been absolutely outstanding all season and made Dave Waller, myself and their parents so proud. “You’ll see the names of these lads playing for years to come at a very good level of football.” Many of the squad also play for Horsham U16, who beat Sedlescombe Rangers U16 2-0 thanks to a great half-volley by Stanley Rice and a sublime second from Ben Collier.

Oliver East and Will Kerr both scored hat-tricks as Horsham U15 hammered Highdown Saints U15 7-0. Andrew Roberts opened the scoring before East and Kerr took over. Lower Beeding and Handcross Lions U15 ended their league season in style, beating Cranleigh Cobras U15 in a last-day thriller. Callum Nash scored twice before Cobras struck twice on the counter attack to level before half time. A well-worked headed goal from Liam Ruz and a penalty tucked away

by captain Andrew Roberts restored Lions’ two-goal advantage, but Cobras were deadly on the break and scored two more in quick succession. Nash added his third and Glenn Johnson completed the scoring for Lions, whose man of the match was central midielder Adam Ruz. Chesworth Rovers U11 moved closer to the title by beating Dorking Saints U11 10-0, through Josh Baker (three), Harry Bryant (three), Tim Bennett (two), Henry Browning and Jack Frankland.

Due to work and holidays I have been unlucky to miss seven Albion matches in March. Tomorrow (Saturday) I will back at the American Express Community Stadium when Albion take on Middlesbrough in a play-off six-pointer. Mike Wilson wrote in this column that he hoped Albion could emulate last March’s form and push for a playoff position. Well they haven’t quite managed that, but it doesn’t seem to have mattered. Last March, Albion won eight out of eight and picked up 24 points. With one game remaining this month, Albion have only gained nine points but this has still seen them climb to fourth. Quite amazing really! This rise is partly due to the fact that many of the teams around us seem just as capable of losing a game as winning one. Last week, manager Gus Poyet said the picture would be much clearer when all the teams had played the same number of games as us. Our luck has held and those teams with games in hand have again missed their chance to go above us. It is in our, or Gus’, hands to get the opportunity to play for a place in the Barclays Premier League next season. With seven games and 21 points left to play for, Albion still have to play four of their play-off rivals, three at The Amex and one, West Ham United, away. Gaining the points required isn’t going to be easy. You may have other ideas, but I believe we have a damned good chance of achieving a play-off berth if we can get 14 more points. Don’t forget, all the other teams also have a number of games against promotion hopefuls. They can’t all win! Albion have only been beaten once this year in the league. If we can keep that form going until the end of the season and average two points a game, that will give us 76 points. Nottingham Forest made the playoffs with just 75 last season, while Blackpool made them with only 70 the year before. So you see my target of just 14 more points isn’t going to be far off what is required. If we can win the majority of our home games and pick-up a few points away from home, where Albion’s form hasn’t been the greatest, we could be playing the biggest game in our history come Saturday, May 19.

Horsham notched up their seventh consecutive win, though they were pushed all the way after leading 5-1 with 15 minutes left. Launching probing attacks straight from the off paid dividends as Horsham went 3-0 up after just five minutes and added another before the interval. With such a commanding lead, they had ambitions of scoring a glut of goals to boost their goal difference. But captain John Burroughs told The Resident: “We threw caution to the wind, going on all-out attack and this opened up gaps which allowed the opposition to get some soft goals. “Towards the end, we went a bit pear-shaped and only capitalised on one more of the several opportunities we created. But we’ve been playing well and have a real chance of promotion.” Matt Hough, Duncan Howarth and Burroughs each scored twice to
