Traders have launched a campaign to end the wave of pessimism caused by constant news reports of recession. Henfield Enterprise, Henfield Community Partnership and the parish council have declared the village’s High Street a “gloom-free zone”. Announcing plans for a three-year programme to revitalise the economy of the village, they jointly told The Resident: “News reports paint a bleak picture, so traders have to fight back with positive news to beat the gloom. “We declare Henfield High Street a gloom-free zone where we will meet customers with renewed energy, enthusiasm and cheerfulness.”
With the continued closure of the Shell Garage at the top of the High Street, and a promise by the company to reopen in late 2012 if redevelopment plans are granted, trade has taken a dip as motorists go outside the village for petrol.
It is possible to talk ‘ourselves into a recession and we can do something about it
’
Cllr Neville de Moraes, lead parish councillor on economic affairs, said: “This has had a knock-on effect. We have to do everything we can to revitalise the High Street.” Andrew Warnes, manager at Budgens, said the store was dropping the prices of about 2,000 items to compete directly
with out-of-village supermarkets such as Tesco. He said: “This is part of a campaign by Budgens to encourage villagers to shop in their own community. “In Henfield we have a very good relationship with our customers and great loyalty. Dropping prices on everyday items is our way of thanking those customers. “We definitely believe that creating an air of optimism will beat the depressing news we keep hearing.” Mike Beardall, chairman of Henfield Enterprise, said: “It is possible to talk ourselves into a recession and we can actually do something about it by being positive. “Henfield businesses may be suffering as a result of uncertainty affecting many people who are not spending money – but there is no reason why we cannot make the Henfield shopping experience a good one.” Continued on Page 2

“We have excellent pubs and restaurants and good public transport, so there is every possibility of attracting people from outside the village to sample what we have to offer.” Tony Jackson, chairman of Henfield Community Partnership, said the three-year revitalisation programme had already begun in 2011. He said: “A survey was commissioned last year into retail provision in Henfield to give us an insight into what needs to be done. “Providing we have sufficient funding, the three-year, three-stage programme will focus on business success and improving the skills of retailers to meet trading challenges. “The effect will be to stimulate economic energy and to regenerate and strengthen the local economy.” This year, Henfield groups partnered with Central Sussex College,
providing job training support to help retailers improve the skills of their staff. Ten local businesses undertook to train 28 staff in new skills in NVQ and apprenticeships programmes. They also have a shop window display competition which culminates with judging by a local celebrity, coinciding with Henfield’s Spirit of Christmas event on December 16. Next year, retailers will focus on specific business attractions surrounding Easter, the Gardens and Arts Festival, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, Horsham Food and Drink Fair and the Christmas season. The following year, Henfield traders will build on campaigns to engage with the local community by continuing the “shop local, shop loyal” theme. Mr Jackson added: “We will design and implement a series of loyaltybuilding and marketing campaigns to engender local support for the local economy.”

Youngsters show Paralympic spirit Paralympic Games hopefuls visited Tanbridge House School during what head teacher Jules White branded an “incredible” day. The London 2012 hopefuls, coaches and members of the Enable Me group ran sessions for youngsters from nine Sussex primary schools, including wheelchair football, fencing and athletics. Guests included Sophia Warner, ranked number one in Europe and two in the world for the T35 100m and 200m.

a taste of Paralympic sports with a range of break-time activities including single-leg high jump and seated shot putt. Mr White said: “The Paralympic Day was absolutely incredible. The atmosphere around the school was wonderful and our students fully embraced the day. All the visiting primary schools had a fantastic time and were a credit to their schools. “We’re very grateful to all the coaches and athletes who gave up their precious time to come along and make this a very special day.” Tanbridge House and the visiting primary schools have been fundraising around the event and are close
to raising £3,000. This will be used to support some of the Paralympic athletes in their quest for the 2012 Games. Sponsored by Tony Kneale Motor Engineer, Horsham, the event followed a visit to the school by double Olympic gold medallist Seb Coe in May.
’
Also visiting were GB sitting volleyball captain Emma Wiggs and Rob Matthews, who has set more than 20 world records and will represent New Zealand in the 2012 tandem cycling. The children split into teams, each representing a country, and were awarded points based on how well they demonstrated the Paralympic values. All received goodie bags. ‘Spurs’ are marching in Former Tottenham Hotspur footballers are set to play in Horsham to raise money for charity. A Spurs Legends team will face Redhill company Jedris at Gorings Mead, home of Horsham YMCA FC, on Sunday, October 9. Money raised will go to St Catherine’s Hospice and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, in memory of Sue Cole who died six years ago. Organisers stress they cannot guarantee who will appear, but former England international Andy Sinton, Mark Falco, Tony Galvin, David Howells, John Lacy, Mark Stimson and Clive Wilson are among those who regularly play for the Spurs team. The Jedris team will feature workers at the business, which specialises in oak conversions and building restoration. Chris Piper played for Charlton Athletic, Lenny Piper for Wimbledon and Gillingham. The match will kick off at 2pm, with gates opening at midday. Admission is £5 per adult including a programme, £1 for children aged three or older and free for children under three. Attractions include a bouncy castle, barbecue, band and evening entertainment. Event spokesman Abby Russell said: “Your readers will be supporting a local charity which depends on fundraisers like these to be able to help many more people. They do an amazing job.”
‘Time to stop cuts to youth services’ Trade unions are calling on West Sussex residents to take part in a public consultation on the future of youth services. They say the West Sussex Youth Service, which provides community youth work and services to prevent reoffending, “has already seen budgets slashed by £2 million”. Daniel Sartin, deputy branch secretary of UNISON West Sussex, said: “This first round of cuts has been appalling for the service and our young people. But now the council is coming back for more. “A further £2 million will be cut from the service over the next three years – unless the public speak out to defend their service and tell councillors ‘no more’. “Councillors should not kid the public. You cannot take £4 million out of a professional service and expect churches and the voluntary sector to pick up the pieces. “We’ve seen no evidence that the Big Society agenda is making any difference to West Sussex’s communities in the face of these damaging cuts.” Jason O’Hagan, West Sussex chairman of the Community and Youth
Workers’ Union, said: “Young people are entering the toughest period for decades, as job opportunities dry up and youth unemployment rises. “Now, more than ever, we need professional, trained staff within youth services to help our young people make the right choices and stay on the right path.
cannot expect ‘theYouvoluntary sector
to pick up the pieces
’
“Any further cuts could have a significant impact right across our communities and services. For the sake of balancing the books now, West Sussex may well pay the price for such short-sighted actions for decades.” West Sussex County Council is asking for views at http://bit.ly/oqfr11 (shortened URL). The unions want residents to complete the questionnaire, making it clear how they value youth services. County councillor Colin Wilsdon, Liberal Democrat spokesman for children and young people, said: “I would
firmly encourage as many people as possible to complete the consultation and demonstrate how important youth services are to us. “Youth services have become the Cinderella service across the country, with savage cuts being made everywhere. In the current climate of rising unemployment and cutbacks to services and benefits, this is not the time to cut back on youth services. “The Summer riots show what can happen if something goes wrong. Services like the youth service need strengthening rather than cutting. “It is possible for the voluntary sector to get more involved, but so far we have little evidence about how successful this has been in West Sussex. “I will be looking for hard information on what has been achieved and contingency planning if the voluntary sector is not able to rise to the challenge.” A spokesman for the Conservativerun county council said: “We are already encouraging people to take part in the consultation. “No decisions have been taken. All responses will be taken into account after the October 14 closing date as part of the decision-making process.”
News in Brief Wendy makes mark A teaching assistant at Castlewood Primary School, Southwater, achieved the highest mark in the country in the RSPH Salon Hygiene exam. Wendy Mason, who has worked at the school for nearly 10 years, has been training in sports massage for the last year and is now fully qualified. She said: “I hope my success will encourage the children to be lifelong learners. I am looking forward to using my new skills, although I won’t be leaving my day job at Castlewood!”
Crematorium ‘travesty’ The rejection of plans for a new crematorium has been branded a “total travesty” by the co-owner of the restaurant next door. Horsham district council rejected Peacebound Ltd’s application for a site next to The Orchard restaurant, Cowfold Road, West Grinstead, just north of the A272. The application included a crematorium, 63 parking spaces plus 34 informal spaces, and upgraded access. The proposed crematorium building contained a staff room, office, crematory area with all required mechanical plant, chapel, vestry and waiting area, toilets, hall of remembrance, two suites for families after the service and a kitchen. David Chadburn, co-owner of The Orchard, said access to the restaurant would have improved and added: “We are probably the biggest employer in West Grinstead. This would have made us busier, so we could have employed more people.”
Charity barks The Horsham Guide Dogs branch will be relaunched at the Roffey Millennium Hall on Thursday, October 6 (8pm-10pm). District fundraiser Phillipa Jan said: “There are so many ways to volunteer. We are looking for proactive and enthusiastic volunteers to help our branch members with fundraising events. “Volunteering is fun and rewarding. You know you’ll be making a real difference by helping Guide Dogs enable blind and partially sighted people to enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else.” Phone 07768 032998 or 0845 371 7771, or email volunteer@guidedogs. org.uk

National recognition for our photographer Oliver Wilks, a photographer with The Resident, won a prestigious national competition for this image of a yawning fox. Taken at Warnham Local Nature Reserve in October last year, the photo impressed judges in the British Wildlife Photography Awards, who awarded Oliver top honours in the 12-18 category. The 17-year-old from Horsham’s success this week featured on the BBC, Channel 5 and Sky News and in several national newspapers, including the Daily Express, Daily Telegraph, Guardian, Independent, Sun and Times. Oliver, who studies Photography at Collyer’s, recently won the International Sharow Photo Competition and has won Horsham’s local naturalist photographic competition four times. But the former pupil at The Forest School said his latest success was the biggest yet. He admitted: “I was shocked when I found out and I wasn’t expecting all of the media interest.” Oliver’s work for The Resident has included photos of successful A-level students, the Big Nibble, the BBC’s Live ‘n’ Deadly event in Horsham Park and Horsham rugby matches, most recently the home game against Eastbourne (see Page 54).

Water way to learn Leaders who work with Scout, Guide or after-school clubs can teach about water with a free activity pack from Southern Water. Aimed at children aged seven to 11, the pack consists of 10 easy-to-follow activities which look at water, how we use it and how important it is for health. Among the activities are projects to make a rainstorm in a jar and to show how little of the Earth’s water is available to drink. Southern Water spokesman Helen Sparkes, who co-ordinated the work, said: “The packs are a great way of helping group leaders teach children about the importance of water. “From the water cycle and the treatment process to the ways we use water and can save it, the packs contain a wealth of information about something which people often take for granted. “They have already proved popular and we hope they will be taken up by a range of groups.” For more information, visit the community and schools pages of www.southernwater.co.uk or email helen.sparkes@southernwater.co.uk

Final chance to have a say on merger You have until Thursday next week, October 6, to comment about the proposed merger of fire services in East and West Sussex. County councillor Pete Bradbury, West Sussex Cabinet member, said: “Because of the difficult financial situation our country finds itself in, the initial drive for exploring the possibility of a merger was the need to protect essential frontline services, fire stations and firefighters, while at the same time meeting tough financial targets. “But I do stress that no decision has been yet been taken. All views are still important to us because feedback from the consultation will be carefully considered before any decision is made.” The business case and consultation document is available online at www. westsussex.gov.uk/fire Copies of the consultation document are also available in libraries, help points and in reception areas of councils, including Horsham District Council. Printed copies can be sent on request. You can contact the consultation team at fireredesign@westsussex. gov.uk, phone 01243 753706 or write to Fire Redesign Team, WSFRS HQ, Northgate, Chichester PO19 1BD. A final business case, including all of the outcomes from the public consultation, will be presented to West Sussex County Council and East Sussex Fire Authority in December.
Office fire is hot news Firefighters have blamed an electrical fault in a light fitting for a fire at an office in Horsham. A fifth of the West Sussex County Times office in Market Square, Horsham, was damaged by fire on Thursday last week and half of the building damaged by smoke. A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said firefighters were alerted at 7.15pm after a member of staff at the newspaper phoned 999. He added: “The fire has been confirmed as starting in an electrical light fitting, causing fire debris to fall to the floor and ignite a chair. The fire then spread to the computer on the desk next to it. “The fact that the fire doors had been closed prevented the fire from spreading further throughout the building, causing much more damage.” Firefighters in two engines from Horsham, one from Crawley and one from Billingshurst attended the scene, together with a ladder platform from Worthing. The fire was extinguished before 9pm.

News in Brief
From Indian Summer to snow business West Sussex has been enjoying one of the warmest late Septembers on record, but the county council has not forgotten what happened last Winter. Snow and ice brought the transport system of the county and much of the country to a near standstill in part of December and January, with complaints that not enough roads and pavements had been gritted. But the county council and
County councillor Pieter Montyn, Cabinet member for highways and transport, with winter service manager Richard Speller (left) and Balfour Beatty’s Brian Hammersley (right)
highways contractor Balfour Beatty have unveiled their latest line of defence – a new fleet of 26 gritters. The new vehicles were put to the test when the county staged Operation Snowflake at the weekend, rehearsing gritting procedures and ensuring resources are ready to be put into action. County councillor Pieter Montyn, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Operation Snowflake saw the new gritting vehicles, snow ploughs and other equipment tested on a dry run across West Sussex. “Drivers were also briefed on the callout procedures that are activated when cold weather hits. “Because they are more efficient, the new vehicles will use 20 per cent less salt. Our supplies will last for longer and there will be less of an effect on the environment.” The new gritters are equipped with a global positioning satellite (GPS) system called Coldsnap, which makes it possible to monitor gritting throughout the county on a minuteby-minute basis. The county council already has a stockpile of 10,000 tonnes of salt and an electronic monitoring system so that more can be ordered if necessary.

Independence is measured and tested in many ways. For some young people, moving off to university and fending for oneself will be a walk in the park. For others, a more challenging path may lay ahead. I’ll be the first to admit that at 18 I am still a child in many ways. My mum reigns supreme in our household on the domestic front and I am ashamed to say I’ve not once learnt how to use the washing machine! My cooking is limited to toast, cereal and sloppy omelette, with undercooked eggs, though I have managed to master oven pizzas and microwave meals. The thought of leaving home next year – tottering off to university over 100 miles from home and being away from the protective parental force field for the first time – is both an extremely exciting prospect and a daunting one. How do you even turn a washing machine on and who will iron all my clothes?! I’m sure I’ll be forced to learn all these things in due course. It would appear we live in a time where going to university is considered the norm, if you don’t pursue a line of work or trade straight from school or college. But there are many underlying pressures on youngsters, who
feel they have to go to university even if they aren’t entirely sure what career route they wish to take. With the extreme cuts to education for students (such as myself) applying for 2012 undergraduate courses, many are surely to be put off going entirely or make hasty decisions into the subject they choose. My advice is that subject certainty is of the upmost importance when considering further education. Studying is only part of the university experience. The social side cannot go ignored. Many people meet new lifelong friends at university and start a new life as a more mature adult. Distance can be a struggle for many people away from home for the first time. But whether you are studying close to home or in another town, city or country, it’s crucial to take the first steps in cutting the apron strings. Budgeting worries me. If I have no money most of the time while living at home, how am I going to be able to afford the weekly shop and my much-needed beer money when I’ve flown the nest? Thank God for smart-price supermarket brands. Good luck, students of 2011 – this is where it all begins. Alex Christie Youth View

Football boss should apologise I was appalled by Horsham YMCA manager Sammy Donnelly’s criticism of referees (The Resident, September 23). YMCA player Grant Philpott was sent off twice in two games for swearing at the referee. This was a quite legitimate punishment according to FIFA’s Laws of the Game, clearing citing “offensive, insulting or abusive language/gestures” as red-card offences. In the age of the FA’s Respect campaign, we should not have to hear of this kind of behaviour towards officials. Sadly it is all too common. As a former U7 and U8 football coach for Horsham Ambassadors, I have seen firsthand how young players copy their heroes’ actions, mainly through diving or dissent. Fortunately, bad language is rare, but I can only see it becoming a bigger problem if people in positions of authority in the game, like Donnelly at YMCA, defend the wrongdoers. What makes Donnelly’s comments all the more outrageous is that he admits Philpott “probably did swear” and that swearing is “part and parcel of the game”, yet the referees take the blame. Officiating is a tough enough job without
the unfair criticism they face from certain individuals. This lax attitude from a manager serving the Horsham Young Men’s Christian Association Football Club is frankly disgusting. The source of the problem is the player, not the referee, and I believe apologies from both Philpott and Donnelly are due.

Concern about burning issue News about the possibility of a new crematorium being sited on the A272 (The Resident, September 23) must ring alarm bells with many local residents of Cowfold and West Grinstead. The owners of The Orchard restaurant must be really hard up for customers if they are supporting the planning application for the construction of a crematorium on their doorstep. How macabre can you get? I can imagine making a booking for luncheon: “Could we reserve a table facing the main road please, as my husband loves to watch the hearses go by. And, yes, we’ll settle for the charcoal grill!” I can recall many happy hours spent in the Tabby Cat when the present Orchard restaurant was a much-frequented pub before becoming a Little Chef. Clearly innocent days. In the midst of life, we are in death – but not in such an attractive rural location please. Cowfold very nearly lost its bus service. Residents deserve better than to
have a crematorium erected within spitting distance of their village.

Crematorium plan is food for thought Matthew James News Editor
matthew@the-resident.co.uk
Plans for a new crematorium have been rejected by councillors – against the advice of council officers. Peacebound Ltd submitted a controversial application for a site next to The Orchard restaurant, Cowfold Road, West Grinstead, just north of the A272 and west of the former railway line that now forms part of the Downs Link. Rod Brown, head of planning at Horsham District Council, recommended that councillors conditionally approve the plans, which he said were supported by the restaurant and consistent with planning guidelines.
‘I was concerned about a building that would
be a haunting memorial if it risked having no viable future
’
But this really was a burning issue. The scheme was opposed by West Grinstead Parish Council and this week rejected by the district council’s development control committee. The application included a crematorium, 63 parking spaces plus 34 informal spaces, and upgraded access onto the A272. The proposed crematorium building contained a staff room, office, crematory area with all required mechanical plant, chapel, vestry and waiting area, toilets, hall of remembrance, two suites for
families after the service and a kitchen. Mr Brown’s report to district councillors said: “The architectural quality of the building is of a high and contemporary standard, incorporating interesting design features. “The council’s public health and licensing team have raised no objection to the application but have requested that regard is given to the Air Quality Management Area proposed in Cowfold and possible mitigation. “A sum of £6,000 has been suggested as an appropriate sum to support air quality monitoring through Cowfold village for three years. “The opening hours of the crematorium fall outside the normal morning and afternoon peak periods for traffic movements on the A272. The percentage increase in traffic as a result of the proposal is expected to be no more than 0.9 per cent. “There is often concern that the free flow of traffic on the highway network is reduced by slow-
moving vehicles that make up a funeral cortege, but the A272 is already the subject of a reduced speed limit in the vicinity of the site access. “With the newly designed site access and the extended right-turn lane to accommodate those approaching the site from the east, it is not consider that the introduction of a crematorium at this location will unduly interrupt the free flow of traffic on Cowfold Road. “There are no highway-related grounds on which to base a reason of refusal of this application. “A crematorium is a facility required by society. Although its location due to its purpose is emotive and unlikely to be welcomed, this would not be a reason for refusing the application in itself unless material harm could be demonstrated.

Cost of parking is a problem Let’s rewind less than 10 years when you could park on the road all day for free in the Bishopric, Springfield Road etc, right in the town. As restrictions came in and car park charges went up, offices in and around the Carfax emptied. This was no coincidence. Shops, including my own, can struggle to

get staff because of the high cost of parking. On most days there are hundreds of empty spaces in the car parks. Yet the council still insists on having the park and ride, despite it running at a loss of about £100,000 per year and therefore costing us ratepayers unnecessarily. David Brooks Dab Hands, Horsham

Skate park off to a flyer Horsham’s Skate Jam has been hailed a success. Organised by some of the young people who use Horsham Skate Park, in partnership with Horsham District Council, the event attracted 69 competitors who took part in BMX, inline skating and skateboarding competitions. The Skate Jam was organised to celebrate the opening of the new and improved skate park in Horsham and was split into two sections, under-16 and over-16. Twenty-five youngsters aged under-16 took part in the morning, with seven inliners, five skateboarders and 13 in the BMX section. Everyone was given five minutes to show off their skills in front of a good crowd of parents and friends. The youngest entrant was six-year-old Adam Bennett, who did well in the BMX competition. Forty-four competitors took part in the over-16s – nine inliners, nine skateboarders and 26 in the BMX
section, with each section split into groups. The winners were Josh Budden, Dan Hemsley, Charlie Andrews, Louie Parker, Joe Hammond, Harry Weymouth, Reece Goddard and Rick Miller. Louie Parker won the High Ollie and Drew Bussey the High Air. Best Trick winners were Adam Nazarko, Joe Hammond and Will Copley. A district council spokesman said: “The whole day was a huge success, with everyone who took part giving their all and demonstrating how much talent there is in the district. “A special thank you has to be given to Sam Richardson, who did a lot of the organisation in advance, spoke to sponsors to get prizes, pulled in friends to help with the judging and commentating, and contributed to the smooth running of the event.” For more information about Horsham Skate Park, phone the council on 01403 215634 or visit www. horsham.gov.uk
Volunteers Lesley Gray, Bernadette Bay, Elizabeth Masson and Louise Carne in the restaurant at the gift fair
St Catherine’s Hospice is about £20,000 better off after 1,200 visitors attended the New Horizons Appeal gift fair at Knepp Castle, Shipley. Volunteer fair organiser Sally Pavey said: “We had an excellent day and would like to thank all that supported this year’s fair. “Wabi of Horsham pulled out all the stops to provide visitors with wonderful cuisine. The cupcakes donated by Tesco Broadbridge Heath were transformed by volunteers into ‘trendy’ cupcakes that were enjoyed by all visitors as part of the admission fee. “A special thank you has to go to Biffa as they arranged a special drive-through of Knepp Estate to collect the rubbish from the fair. It normally ends up in volunteers’ cars, which is very smelly!” The next New Horizons Appeal event in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice is the garden and local produce fair at Summers Place, Billingshurst on May 17 next year. Sam Allsop History
Funnily enough, Steyning station was technically not the start or end of the Steyning Line, but it certainly was a crucial stop. Often viewed as the most important station on the route, Steyning saw many services depart from and terminate at its platforms. With close access to the coast – so close that in William the Conqueror’s time Steyning lay beside it – the station took on board many passengers. Be they day-trippers to the seaside, commuters heading the 35 minutes to Horsham and beyond or children arriving for school at Steyning Grammar, the station experienced activity unlike that of most other rural stations. Steyning station was built on the eastern edge of the town, with a similar design to that of Henfield. Suggestions were made for a line linking Steyning with Storrington and Pulborough, most pertinently in the 1840s and 1880s, but these never came to fruition. With water cranes on both platforms Steyning certainly wasn’t a station that drivers visited fleetingly. A large goods yard and cattle pens, which catered for animal and other traffic, lay to the side. Another reason to hang around in Steyning was its market activity. The station’s arrival saw Steyning’s market change to a more auction-based form and allowed increased animal traffic. The Steyning Line allowed a number of events to occur – annual horse sales in the 1890s, poultry auctions at Christmas and the establishment of Steyning as the largest egg market in Sussex. Not only did the station help to sustain the local economy, it also led to road improvements and the expansion of Steyning to the north west. And it provided employment. Staff needed to be able to work just as well in the signal box as in the booking office, not forgetting to clean the station and muck in at the goods yard. But it was not all hard work and some very odd tasks were carried out. One day in 1914, all staff were called upon to search along the line when the station master’s rabbits went missing, only for them to be found at the bottom of the signal box. In today’s society, it is unlikely that health and safety or animal welfare groups would look too kindly on this kind of incident. Ron Stilwell recalls hearing about
the odd way his father, a platelayer, was concussed and consequently took six weeks off work. It was already known that Steyning station had bad acoustics, but Stilwell found this out in the most undignified manner when a train from Henfield booted him on the backside and sent the poor platelayer flying 30ft through the air. World War II meant happy memories were hard to come by in Steyning, but the station had its moments. Geoffrey Austin waved his father off to war with the RAF, only to see the train chug sheepishly back without water moments later.
A train from Henfield ‘booted him on the backside and sent the poor platelayer flying 30ft through the air
’
The war gave fame to Steyning as the nearby Wiston House was used by General Montgomery in 1940 as his headquarters. Sir Winston Churchill visited Montgomery there, usually travelling by train, and enjoyed a pleasant time around Steyning. The years after the war allowed greater public use of the station, especially for those still lacking a family car. Helen Swyer remembers racing boats on the stream beside Mouse Lane or walking up the line and spotting glow worms. But the general trend was away from rail travel. Crowds gathered on October 7, 1961, the centenary of the Steyning Line, but the early Sixties was a dark time for the station. In 1962 a new early train to Brighton and a late northbound train failed to attract enough interest. The arrival of diesel in 1964 couldn’t halt the decline in passenger numbers and the station closed two years later. Well over 100 people crammed in to witness the final train, which featured a wreath: “In loving memory of the faithful.” The Last Post was played by Charlie Batten, but later a slip at the Norfolk Arms also spelt the end for Charlie’s battered bugle. With the huge growth in Steyning’s population – which more than tripled between 1851 and 1991 – it is arguable that the station would have thrived today. Instead it remains confined to the history books and the memories of “the faithful”.

Frock on to support cancer research Whether it’s for the boardroom or the school run, Cancer Research UK is inviting the ladies of the town to get their glad rags on for a day of frocks and fundraising James Hood Business Editor
james@the-resident.co.uk
La Vida and Cancer Research UK have teamed up to launch Frock Breast Cancer in Horsham. The new campaign aims to raise money and awareness for breast cancer by encouraging women to get dressed up for one day in October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The ‘dress up’ day is an alternative to dress down days at the office, but anyone including individuals in the town, whether they are at home, school or work are welcome to register for a fundraising pack to take part in the national event on October 20. Sharon Baldwin, Cancer Research UK’s area volunteer manager for Horsham, said: “La Vida has been supporting Cancer Research UK for many years and they are perfect to head up
Horsham’s Frock Breast Cancer campaign. Why not organise a ‘Dress Up’ day at work or school, or organise your own ‘Miss October’ competition or fashion show?

“Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters, without whom we would not be able to fund outstanding scientists, doctors and nurses.”
The Frock Breast Cancer campaign coincides with a ‘Bubbles and Bows Ball, being held at The Felbridge Hotel on October 8, to raise money for the cancer charity. If you feel like adding even more glamour into your life, there may still be tickets available. Speaking about Frock Breast Cancer, co-owner at La Vida, Donna Camera, said: “We have worked with Cancer Research UK since we opened our shop 12 years ago. It’s a charity that is really important to us. Everyone who works here has been affected by cancer in some way. That’s the reason we get so involved. I’m proud to say we’ve helped raised in excess of £10,000 and that I am a business patron of the ball as well. It would be great to see lots of women here, and dressed to the nines on October 20 to really help spread the message”. To encourage people to take part in the dress up day on October 20, La Vida is inviting those who get

‘Come down to The Comodor and see for yourself’ The public are welcomed into the kitchen, as one of the restaurants that received a low score in a hygiene assessment bites back A restaurant owner with more than 25 years in the industry has responded to a public ‘naming and shaming’ after receiving a low score from the council for its hygiene standards. Adel Perseh owns The Comodor restaurant on Blackhorse Way and has welcomed his customers and members of the public into his
kitchen, which he says follows every rule in the book. He said: “After more than two decades in this industry I know how to make sure my premises are above the required standard for health and hygiene. “I take great pride in keeping a neat, tidy and clean kitchen, as do all my staff members.

The inspection took place eight months ago and Mr Perseh claims the low score was all down to a book used to record temperatures and other measurements, which he could not find at the time. He said: “The assessor came during a really busy period, over the lunchtime rush. We could not find the book they asked for. We later found it in the bar area. “I got an email afterwards telling me that we would have received a much higher score for hygiene Offices in Brighton, Chichester, Horsham, Storrington and Worthing

Spare your boiler – it might not need replacing A business in Horsham stocks a wide range of old and new parts for boilers, meaning they could save you time and money if yours goes bust this Winter If you’re a homeowner, chances are you have needed some work done on your boiler at some point. But there is a company in Horsham that provides almost every spare part under the sun for boilers and gas cookers, which could save you money in the long run. Heating Maintenance Spares provides spare parts for trades-people and individuals and specialises in older parts that many professional boiler engineers find it hard to get hold of. George Dickson is the manager and has been with the business for five years. He said: “Often finding the right spare part for a boiler or cooker can save them from being completely discarded and replaced, which can be very expensive. These are tough economic times, so prolonging the life of a boiler for even a few months can make a big difference to people’s finances.” The company was established in 2003 and has developed a reputation for stocking a wide range of parts, which has meant it is popular with boiler engineers. It is the only independent business of its kind in the area and the drop-in store, on Littlehave Lane, in Horsham, is conveniently open from 7.30am. There is also a comprehensive diagram, which helps identify the equipment or part required. Customers, both from the trade and the general public, also benefit from
the expertise of the staff at Heating and Maintenance Spares. Many of the employees are ex-engineers, meaning that they can offer trusted advice as well as the parts. Customer service is key too. George added: “We excel in customer service. All our staff members are friendly and know their stuff – we all understand how boilers work, which puts us in a great position to advise people. It is something our customers value because we get a lot of repeat business and referrals. We have a philosophy that ‘no part is too small for us to care’. And if we don’t have it, we will help our customers find it”.

Video venture is a success for former city boy A white collar worker turns redundancy into an opportunity and follows his passion for video, the web and having fun
If you’ve ever thought about quitting the rat race to do something a little more fun, Craig Sawyer could be all the inspiration you need. He made the leap from corporate life and now runs a successful video production company that specialises in videos for the web. Today, he is passionate about his work and spends his days (and a few nights) working creatively, filming and editing video footage. But his story begins in the city, more than ten years ago, where he worked as an account director in the telecoms industry. “I was up in London working with the big boys. It was a really corporate lifestyle. Many of my clients were in the top 20 law firms in the world and I found myself holding meetings with people from financial organisations like the New York Stock Exchange.
It was all very serious and all I am is creative. “I started to realise there wasn’t much room for creativity and I had already been working on websites in my own time for a while.” It was long before his time in the city that Craig first started to exercise his creative license. Back in 1997, the company he worked for installed Dreamweaver on his laptop, allowing him to teach himself how to design websites. He took on extra work at weekends and while on the train when the rest of the commuters read their paper, or slept. After developing his knowledge, he formed his own company; Blue Juice. “It was just for fun back then. I did it because I loved it. Then I got some regular work”. “At the time I would have loved to do it full time. It was just a scary
thought. I had a young family and bills to pay and was on a rather nice London salary which would have been difficult to give up.” Then, in 2009, as if it was all meant to be, he was made redundant. Craig said: “The cash was flowing in the city back then and we went to some really nice places. There was a particularly lovely bar that we only went to when the news was really good or really bad. And on this occasion, it wasn’t good. Two hours later, I was back on the train. It was a pretty scary time. This is where you bring out the X Factor music for my sob story isn’t it”. He said. The very next day, Craig turned running Blue Juice into a full time job. He developed the video production side of his business after filming and editing sporting events before working for Richard Branson and brands such as Virgin and Red Bull to make surfing and snowboarding films. Soon after, the travel industry and shopping centres followed, and its success coincided with a boom in video for the web. “Video came naturally to me because I’ve always loved photography, I’m creative and I had experience with websites. It has become the way we all like to consume information, and website users’ appetite for video is insatiable. It’s the way we all like to get messages these days. We all like to watch stuff”, Craig said. Video online is becoming a standard part of many websites. Blue Juice
offers a complete filming, scripting, editing and production service. They can even organise scripting and voiceovers. The entire project can be managed from start to finish. As a smaller company, clients also benefit from lower costs than many larger, city-based production agencies. foundry_resident_ad
16/8/11
Another of its unique selling points is its owner’s passion for creating captivating video footage that achieves his client’s goals. Craig added: “I absolutely love what I do. As long as it’s fun, I just want to get involved”. For more information visit www.bluejuice.co.uk

How to look good in Horsham Sainsbury’s in Horsham is hosting a ‘ladies day’ at the store on Thursday, October 6. The event marks the launch of the supermarket’s new range of womenswear, which has been designed in collaboration with TV star Gok Wan. The store will be offering pink cupcakes, pink bubbly and free manicures in the clothing department. Speaking about the launch, Gok Wan said: “I’m so unbelievably excited that women in Horsham will be able to access my debut collection. I want women to flirt, flaunt and celebrate their curves.” Geraldine Higgins is Sainsbury’s head of womenswear buying and added: “Since announcing our partnership with Gok earlier this year we’ve been overwhelmed with positive reactions from our customers and colleagues”. The range will be stocked in over 200 stores and reflects Gok’s philosophy of making women feel confident, stylish and positive about their bodies, whatever their budget, size or shape. The line has been named Gok for TU and combines key basics with strong statement pieces. Colours will reflect the autumn season and include a rich red, teal and terracotta.
Cupcakes and bubbly are on offer to celebrate the launch of a celebrity clothing range for women
What is Hypnotherapy?
A customer and Barbara Collins welcome the Gok for TU range to the store
Hypnotherapy is a combination of Psychotherapy and Hypnosis. The Psychotherapy in itself is extremely beneficial and its effects are enhanced by the application of Hypnosis, which enables the subconscious mind to make beneficial changes. What to expect: Many people believe that Hypnotherapy is something that is “done” to them, that they explain their issue to the therapist who then simply hypnotises their problem away, as if by magic. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a much more collaborative process and it is important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen. The initial consultation is designed to assess what you want to achieve,
how hypnotherapy can help you and how many sessions you are likely to need. Subsequent Hypnotherapy sessions involve much more than Hypnosis. During the first part of each session we’ll talk about the progress you have made and I’ll be encouraging you to express yourself positively, focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems. I’ll help you to imagine your preferred future, a future where you have a more useful perspective on the quality of your life. I’ll then guide you into a relaxed state of Hypnosis so that we can consolidate what we have discussed. Visit www.apollo-hypnotherapy. co.uk for details. T
he first Friday in October, every year, is really a very special day. Many beer aficionados will recognise it, but most others will not know it is OLD FRIDAY. It is the day every year we, at Weltons Brewery, launch our prize winning winter beer, Horsham Old. (It was voted Best Beer at the Sussex Beer Festival 2002). We mark the launch with a massive party in the brewery, attracting Morris Dancers, not only from West Sussex but also from neighbouring Surrey and they, of course, add an atmosphere & liveliness which makes this an unmissable event on the 7th October this year. Tickets are free from the Brewery and Beer Essentials in East Street. It will be available on draught in the pubs on this page and to take away from Beer Essentials in East Street. After a lot of hard work this year we have developed a great range of bottled beers which reflect our aim to produce beers that are as natural as possible and are totally free from any added preservatives, colouring or flavouring, all of which are bottle conditioned. This is the process whereby the beer is bottled with the yeast and in the process of secondary fermentation and maturation in the bottle, the beer is carbonated perfectly naturally. We have restarted bottling Pridenjoy, our flagship low gravity (2.8%) beer. We are putting it in 330ml and calling it Light Ale for the pub trade and 500ml bottles as Pridenjoy for the off-licences. The other beers are Sussex Pride 4%, Old Cocky 4.3%, Export Stout 4.7% & Old Harry 5.2%. We do occasionally bottle some of the seasonal beers we brew and the next will be Black Dragon Smoked Porter. This is named after the Black Dragon Morris Men recently formed in the town. The Smoked beers are interesting because you don’t see many brewed, but if you go back 200 years or more all beers would have had a smokey background to the flavour because the malt was roasted or kilned over wood fires which imparted the smokiness. The next one to look out for from Weltons will be Black Turkey 5.2%. This is a smoked stout & the reason for this smoked beer is so when you’re in the pub on Christmas Day, as you’re drinking the beer it will remind you of the burning turkey in the oven. Talking of Christmas, we’ll brew our usual 12 Beers Of Christmas & we’ll produce Santa’s Six Pack, the perfect Christmas present. Also this year we will preview the beers with an event in the brewery on Saturday the 3rd of December and this will be in the form of a music festival featuring local bands. Live@TheBrewery tickets are available from Beer Essentials. We have this year had two similar events which have been hugely successful. Go on You Tube & search Stuart James Band & you can see him playing some excellent blues in the brewery.

TV classic comes to The Capitol Gig Guide Horsham Area
A local theatre company is staging ‘Allo ‘Allo, complete with the much loved lines and characters from the original series Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once... ‘Allo ‘Allo is coming to The Capitol in just a few weeks. The show, which has been produced by Hit & Run Theatre Company, follows the adventures of Rene, the hapless cafe owner in war-torn France, as he and wife Edith struggle to keep a priceless portrait stolen by the Nazis, hidden in a sausage in their cellar. Adding to Rene’s woes, the French, led by Michelle, force him to help with their persistent attempts to
return two bumbling British airmen to England. Rene, caught in the middle of the mayhem, must also keep his longrunning affairs with two waitresses a secret from his wife or losing his cherished cafe may be the least of his problems. The play is inspired by and based on one of the greatest British TV comedies ever written and will be bringing an air of the French Resistance to the Capitol’s studio. Its cast of 16 is under the direction

show, Lorca: Amor en el Jardín (Love in the Garden) is being performed at The Hawth and marks the 75th anniversary or Lorca’s death. Théâtre Sans Frontières is collaborating with one of the UK’s top producing theatres, Northern Stage, on this production, which is an original adaptation of Lorca’s tragicomic play El Amor de Don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín (The Love of Don Perlimplín and Belisa in the Garden). The performance is set in 1936, on the eve of the Spanish Civil War in Lorca’s ‘garden of love’. Through video projection and the writer’s own words and music, witness moments from Lorca’s life, recalling his youth, passions, and struggle for acceptance. The story focuses on a wealthy
man, who wants to spend his days reading books. His housekeeper, however, thinks it’s high time he found himself a wife. Reluctantly, he agrees to marry the unsuitably gorgeous and much younger Belisa, but what has he let himself in for? Théâtre Sans Frontières produces theatre by world authors in their original language. Since it was founded in 1991, the company has created more than 40 productions in English, French, German and Spanish and has toured extensively to theatres, arts centres, schools and colleges across the UK. Dear John,
I have heard that, once again, Horsham will not be having many Christmas lights in town this year. I know these are tough economic times, but surely the council and major retailers can come to some agreement on the funding? Last Christmas, Horsham looked drab and dreary compared to other small towns. I would have thought that everyone involved should be persuading as many people as possible to visit Horsham during the festive period. Good Christmas lights would pay for themselves with extra car parking revenue and profits for the stores.
John O’Sullivan graces The Resident Entertainment section and solves your problems in his trademark, empathetic style...
HORSHAM Fireworks Night
It is amazing a town as affluent as ours has dreadful Christmas lights. I’m quite ashamed to be honest. If the council sold just one of their units in town, that alone would pay for a wonderful set of Christmas lights. But they’d probably use the money for a weird statue instead.
Why are people getting away with letting their dogs foul in the park, regardless of the obvious dangers posed to children? Not to mention the effect it has when trodden to your new lounge carpet.

Paul, some puppets and plenty of comedy The popular ventriloquist is coming to Horsham with his unique sit-com-style show and yes, he’s bringing Sam! Don’t get him confused with a traditional ventriloquist. He’s the comedian with a puppet, says Paul Zerdin. “What I do is first and foremost about comedy. I love
to make people laugh and entertain them. I just do it with characters on stage. The live show is a great vehicle for comedy and will appeal to anyone who loves stand-up”, he said. Although Paul’s sidekick, Sam, is a young boy, his latest show is aimed at a more adult audience. Expect some cheeky one-liners from the young puppet and more of a sitcom set-up as Paul introduces his two newest characters; Albert and Baby. Paul grew up in a showbiz family. His mum was a TV presenter and his dad, a producer. So entertaining has always been in his blood. “I was always a real show off as a kid. And my parents didn’t do much to discourage me. So I decided quite early that I wanted to follow in their footsteps. My sister and I spent a lot of time in studios as kids, so I was comfortable there. I didn’t concentrate too well in school but I did work really hard learning my craft and working in comedy and working men’s clubs.” It may be his work ethic that has
Crazy funny film Two love stories for the price of one. Well, three actually if you include the ‘bromance’ between the movie’s two male leads, who meet in a bar when Jacob decides to rescue newly divorced Cal from a fate worse than death – ill-fitting clothes. This Hollywood rom com touches upon the issues of modern love, including dating, marriage and separation and stars Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore as well as newcomer Emma Stone. Just when Carrell’s character is
deserted, downbeat and living in a rented apartment while his kids are at home, he meets Jacob – a supercool ladies’ man who whips him into shape, literally. The obligatory crazy stupid (yet gloriously entertaining) makeover ensues, with Cal getting a new wardrobe, dapper haircut and confidence with the ladies. Meanwhile, Jacob is going through a transition of his own – love! The womaniser has finally met ‘the one’ but does she want him? Ultimately, it’s a big old crazy love
helped Paul Zerdin become a household name. The comedian (and Sam) have been regulars on TV and at the Royal Variety Show. He has also toured the country numerous times and is currently taking his ‘Sponge Fest’ show around the UK. Despite being a funny guy, part of Paul’s appeal is undoubtedly, Sam. The cute kid who comes out with the occasional inappropriate comments about the ladies in the audience is a far cry from a traditional puppet. “I wanted to create something that was cute rather than creepy, which is a reputation that ventriloquism has had in the past. Sam was my creation and pays homage to shows I love such as The Muppets”, Paul said. With a combination of sit-com style comedy, puppets (cute ones) and stand-up, this is one show coming to Horsham that you won’t want to miss. Demand for tickets has been high, so book now. Visit www.thecapitolhorsham.com or call 01403 750220.
story, that’s not so stupid in the end. With interweaving lives, a schoolboy crush, the rather handsome and talented Ryan Gosling all with a side of humour. See it at The Capitol in Horsham this week.

Ask the Experts The Letting Agent
Kathy Taylor Senior Manager Leaders
Q A
I have heard recently that the Government doesn’t have any plans to regulate letting agents. What are the implications of this?
The Government has recently confirmed that they have no plans to regulate letting agents which means Landlords and Tenants should take extra care when choosing an agent to let or rent a property through. There have been a concerning amount of cases of rogue agents involved in theft and fraud that have come to light in the past few months and, as an agent who has been established for over 28 years, we have always known this to be a problem. Many people are unaware that there is no proper regulation governing letting agents, despite the plethora of legislation that applies to letting itself. Over the decades that we have been in business we have seen numerous landlords and tenants let down by incompetent and dishonest letting agents. Under the current system there is no legislation in place to prevent letting agents from using tenants deposits and landlords rents for their own purposes, and there is nothing that requires them to be qualifies and understand the regulations that govern the practice of letting and property management. The issue of unregulated agents is not just about money. If letting agents don’t know and comply with the many regulations that apply to letting, properties can be unsafe and the landlords and tenants interests unprotected during the tenancy. Letting agents need to be experienced, knowledgeable and competent to let and manage property, with a thorough understanding of the complex legislation surrounding lettings. If there is no formal regulation of letting agents then my advice is simple: only use an agent with many years experience, a good reputation and one that is a member of a professional body such as ARLA, NAEA or RICS. These organisations are selfregulating and ensure that member agents comply with a rigorous code of conduct and that clients money is held in separate, ring-fenced accounts and property protected. When you consider the many potential risks to the public, it is shocking that any person or organisation can become a letting agent, with no training, qualifications or financial probity. The public need to be aware that unprofessional, unqualified and unethical agents will continue to operate and the key is to vet their letting agent carefully. For information on any aspect of Letting or Renting contact Kathy Taylor on 01403 217585 or kathytaylor@leaders.co.uk Leaders 18a Market Square, Horsham,West Sussex RH12 1EU 01403 217585 www.leaders.co.uk

a comprehensive Legal Test, which both Fiona and Alex passed with flying colours! Says Leader’s senior branch manager, Kathy Taylor: “We are delighted with the results of our recent Legal Test and congratulations to Fiona and Alex who both studied very hard to achieve extremely high marks in the exam. These results prove their in-depth knowledge of letting and their commitment to providing the best possible service to their clients”. There is more to lettings than meets the eye: many regulations must be adhered to for the safety of tenants and to protect the interests of landlords. Leaders’ have developed their stringent legal training to ensure that their staff are qualified to let and manage their clients’ properties lawfully, and that tenancies run smoothly for the benefit of both landlords and tenants. The Legal Test requires many hours of home study and a full day of intensive training, followed by a lengthy exam. Subjects covered include: • An introduction to the English legal system • Standard contract law and correct use relating to lettings
• Property management • Complying with legislation to ensure the safety of tenants • Protecting the interests of landlords • Health and safety • Personal safety Says Kathy: “We recognise that in an industry such as ours, where exceptional service is the key to success, training and development are fundamental. We know that the skill and knowledge of our people makes us stand out from our competitors and we pride ourselves on the high calibre of our staff”

Lifestyle Ford is delighted to introduce the limited edition Ford Fiesta Centura to its customers throughout the region. Celebrating 100 years of business in the UK, the Ford motor company are commemorating this milestone by producing a special edition of the Fiesta, adding a whole host of additional features that would normally cost £600. The Ford Fiesta has remained the UK’s favourite and best-selling small car with 52,000 sales of the model in the first part of this year alone. The new Centura edition will be limited to only 1,000 models, and is a tribute to the first Ford vehicle manufactured in the UK, the Model T in 1911. The Fiesta Centura builds on the already comprehensive Fiesta range, incorporating the ever popular 1.25-litre 82PS petrol engine. Based primarily on the popular Fiesta Zetec, the Centura is available from only £11,995. Available exclusively in Panther Black metallic paint, with chrome

Hornets manager slams Donnelly is fuming a ‘pathetic’ performance Tom Norris & Nick Hind Football
James Herd Football
Horsham will return to FA Cup action tomorrow (Saturday) with a rollocking from boss Justin Luchford still ringing in their ears. The Hornets suffered two more disappointing defeats, 3-2 at Wingate and Finchley on Saturday and 3-1 at home to Harrow Borough on Tuesday. After the latest setback, Luchford stormed: “It was a well-deserved defeat. That’s the worst performance I’ve seen all season and they’ve just been told that. “When it comes to desire, passion and will to win, that’s got to come
from the players. They (Harrow) all had desire and passion. We didn’t. “None of them look particularly good for 90 minutes. It’s always for 45 and tonight (Tuesday) it was for nought. We went 1-0 up for the first time in a long while, but why aren’t we kicking on? “We gave a pathetic goal away for the first, a pathetic goal away for the second, and how much time does he want for the third? Pathetic, absolutely pathetic. “I’ve heard a few fans getting on their backs a bit today and rightly so. I’m not going to stand here and defend my players when they don’t give 100 per cent. I’ll tell you how it is.” Talking about the lack of a home win this season, Luchford added:

“We aren’t going to get a win home or away until we turn in a performance where we have heart and desire. Until that happens, we’re going to get beaten every week.” Harrow started brightly, dominating early possession, before the Hornets took an unlikely lead after 18 minutes when Calum McGeehan played through Ray Freeman.

But the lead didn’t last long. Rob Wolleaston set up Evandro Delgado for a 28th-minute equaliser and Borough went ahead two minutes later when JJ Bates finished a smart move. The hosts struggled to find their rhythm throughout and Borough secured the points on 66 minutes when Bates and Dean Fenton set up Delgado’s second.
Reuben’s late strike rescues Horsham U15 Youth Football
A last-gasp equaliser by Reuben Selby salvaged a point for Horsham U15 at Highdown Saints U15 in the Arun and Chichester Youth League. Will Kerr’s shot hit the crossbar and, with the home defence reorganising, Callum Nash threaded the ball through for Selby to slot past the advancing goalkeeper. The young Hornets started slowly and were lucky not to be a goal down after only four minutes when a welltaken free kick struck their crossbar.
Saints did go ahead three minutes before half time, but Horsham saw penalty appeals turned down after apparent fouls on Nash and Alex Moore in the second half. Horsham U14 won 3-0 at Eastbourne Borough Red U14 in the Sussex Sunday Youth League. Lewis Reeves, Liam Clarke and Dan Cusdin scored in a fine team performance by Richard Wootton’s side. Joe Moss saved a penalty when Horsham led 1-0. In the Ryman Youth League, Horsham U18 crashed to a 6-0 defeat at Lewes U18, who scored three times in each half.
Calum McGeehan heads against the bar on Saturday
Horsham fell behind early against Wingate and Finchley. Freeman equalised in the 23rd minute, but the Hornets conceded two more in the first half before Russell Eldridge completed the scoring. Horsham visit Burnham in the FA Cup second qualifying round tomorrow, but Luchford admitted: “I’m not looking forward to any game at the moment. “We’ve got to go and win. I don’t care if we play the worst football known to man, as long as we give 100 per cent. “If I see people doing things that I’ve not told them to do, I’ll make substitutions in the first 10 minutes. And if I have to make all three in the first 10, I’ll make them. I’m not accepting it anymore.”

Horsham YMCA slumped to their third successive league defeat as wasted chances and an abysmal second-half display handed newly promoted AFC Uckfield a 1-0 win. Following a post-match rant in the home changing room at Gorings Mead, YM manager Sammy Donnelly seethed: “I’ve signed on 40 players and there’ll be another 40 if need be. “Everything we told them not to do, they did in the second half. That’s not acceptable. “The players have to do what we ask them to do. It’s not like we’re asking them to do things they haven’t got the quality for. It was a very disappointing game.” YM’s George Hillier released Timmy Martin who sliced wide before Lee Wood scuffed a shot straight at goalkeeper Tom Betts. The visitors applied pressure on the break. YM keeper Simon Lockwood made an unbelievable save to deny Chris Logan from close range before AFC Uckfield’s Andy McDowell headed against a post. Striker Ben Burns replaced Martin at the break as YM converted to a 4-42 formation, but the hosts were sluggish and AFC capitalised five minutes into the half. Lockwood failed to deal with Joe Dryer’s drilled corner and McDowell nodded home. An appalling display saw the hosts fail to create any clear chances all half, leaving them a lowly 13th in Division 1. It has taken seven attempts to fell the mighty Forest, but a well-drilled Pease Pottage Village found the magic formula to topple the Tangerines. Set pieces proved to be the chink in Forest’s armour as the visitors strolled into a 2-0 lead through Matt Munday and Joe Lyons. Tom Tolfrey added a late third. Elsewhere in Division 3, Broadbridge Heath are up to third after regaining their touch in front of goal to secure a deserved 3-1 win at Ifield. One-touch football produced a cracking opener for Russell Mortimer before Michael Wood struck from 25 yards and Miles Hamilton added a third before the break. At the opposite end of the table, Roffey and TD Shipley continue to ship goals. TD’s 5-0 defeat at Uckfield looks like a good result when compared with Roffey’s 8-0 home drubbing at the hands of Saltdean. Storrington endured an unproductive week. Saturday’s Division 2 match at Little Common ended goalless before Tuesday’s Sussex Senior Cup tie at Southwick finished in a 4-3 defeat. In the Division 2 Cup, Steyning lost 2-1 at home to Midhurst and Easebourne despite Adam Burton’s eighth-minute opener. Lewis Hyde scored both.

Jonny Ordidge scored two of Horsham’s five tries as the home side overcame Sussex rivals Eastbourne, who beat them twice last season. Horsham took the lead after just three minutes. After quick hands down the Horsham line and good wing play by Dan Bourne, Simon Matterface had the easy task of running the ball over the line. Matt Brown scored the conversion. Horsham’s backs looked sharp, always making ground with the ball and constantly looking like they were going to create something. Neal Holden got the ball off the back of a lineout and made gaps in the opposition defence with direct running. The backs were able to pass the ball out quickly and find Matt Goodsir running from deep for Horsham’s second try, again converted. Horsham continued to pass fluidly
and created another opportunity to score on the left wing, but Brown overran the pass and was unable to take advantage. Eastbourne managed to get a try back after a suspect refereeing decision allowed them to sprint down the wing and interchange with all their backs for a well-worked score. The visitors started to put Horsham under a lot of pressure, which paid off when their full back intercepted a slack pass and sprinted three-quarters of the pitch for a converted try. 14-12. But the comeback didn’t last long. The excellent Holden again ran at the Eastbourne defence, rumbling through tackles and making ground. The ball was distributed out to the backs, where Ordidge twisted and turned over the line. Eastbourne ended the first half with a penalty miss, right in front of the posts, allowing Horsham to lead 19-12 at the break. A scrappy second half started with Eastbourne looking the stronger team, but Brown missed a chance to

A feast of tries in U14 warm-up Horsham U14 (pictured right) beat Chipstead U14 62-22 and Old Redingensians U14 29-17 in friendlies, ahead of their first league match against Eastbourne U14 on October 16. George Palmer and Matt Collier each scored three tries against Chipstead, while Rowan Murphy-Hunt, Dominic Harry, Callum Boswell and Duncan Watkins also crossed. Tom Hooley and Harry were joint players of the match.
extend Horsham’s lead with a penalty after Rob Hoskins was pulled in to a ruck. Holden again caused havoc, catching the ball off a lineout and breaking through a number of tackles to gain precious ground. Horsham quickly shipped the ball out to the backs where Ordidge was waiting for his second try. Brown missed a penalty from 35m, but Horsham added a fifth try when Angelo Sheppard stepped past two players and offloaded the ball to Jonny Whiting who went over. The home side continued to apply heavy pressure but were unable to add any more points. Coach Nick Stocker said: “Eastbourne are a strong side who we lost to twice last season. I’m pleased with five well-fashioned tries and a good win to help us go forward.” Horsham will visit Uckfield in the league tomorrow (Saturday). Horsham tries: Matterface, Goodsir, Ordidge 2, Whiting, Conversions: Brown 2.

Tuesday saw the last of three games in a week at The Amex. The players did us proud against Liverpool. And they showed enormous spirit against Leeds, coming back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 before a very late equaliser. But the last of the trio of games is the one that will stick in my mind for a while. On Tuesday we lost to Crystal Palace, our arch-rivals. As I write this piece on Wednesday morning, having tried to type it when I got home last night, I still feel sick. Albion were the better team for the first 20 minutes and Craig MackailSmith scored an early goal. Everything appeared to be going according to plan and the Albion fans were singing for all they were worth. Then we stopped playing, or maybe Palace found their feet. Whatever it was, for the rest of the game Palace were the better team and it was no surprise when they equalised. What was a surprise was that we let in two more goals. The Palace fans had a party in the away end while the rest of the ground emptied. It’s not the losing that hurts, although it does and it particularly does against Palace, it’s the way we lost. The team just didn’t seem to have the fight they had shown against Liverpool and Leeds. For the first time this season, the NWSS coach trip home was a very sober affair, with very little chat and no laughter. The trip down hadn’t been much better, although there was plenty to chat about – including how horrendous the traffic was. Commuters returning to the coast and the influx of cars from south London proved too much for the A23 and A27 as long queues built up. We did get to the ground eventually, after taking a scenic route that took in Withdean, but not until 10 minutes before kick-off. Albion plan to increase the capacity to more than 30,000. But unless there is some thought about how all these extra fans are going to arrive at the ground, it will never be full – at least never before kick-off. Our next home game is a lateSaturday kick-off against Hull. Having most of the day to get to the ground, it will be nice to arrive in time to sample a pie and sink a beer or two, rather than run up the stairs to take our seats as the match starts.

Horsham are raring to go, with their first league encounter at home against Worthing tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm). Horsham just missed out on the promotion play-offs last season and pre-season games have stretched the team against opposition from higher divisions. At Canterbury, playing in a triangular tournament against the city’s London League side, they endured a marginal defeat before learning from the slick Trinidad and Tobago national team, who were en route to the Olympic qualifiers. Horsham’s youngest player, John Kimberley, 16 next February, will long remember scoring with a screamer into the top corner of the T&T goal. The team were edged out by Brighton and Hove, two leagues above them, in the Sussex Cup. Kimberley was again on target, along with regular marksman Mark Ansell. Coach Sam Naismith said: “The focus this season is all about securing promotion without having to go through the play-offs, so not having the distraction of a cup run is no bad thing.” Horsham have lost several players, including centre half Freddie Campbell (Bath University), but exciting new recruits have been registered. Ed Jackson and Will Richardson
(Brighton University) strengthen the attack and midfield, while Sussex cricket physiotherapist Dan Trigwell (ex-Bath) joins as a strong defender. Much is anticipated from these new faces. If Horsham continue in the same vein as they finished last season, they will be genuine contenders to move up a division. Horsham Ladies lost 3-0 at Oxford Hawks Ladies in their second league match of the season. Horsham were indebted to keeper Hannah Simpson, who denied Hawks
several times to keep the interval score at 0-0. Despite a stern half-time team talk by coach Warren Gilmour, Horsham were hit by a goal eight minutes into the second half. Hawks missed several chances and only determined defending kept them at bay until two more goals sealed Horsham’s fate. Horsham Ladies will face Old Loughtonians at home on Sunday (12.30pm). Horsham Boys U12 won a minis tournament at Trinity School,
Croydon, by winning three of their four matches. Goals were scored by player of the tournament Max Neal, Charlie Pope, James Castle and Michael Long, who showed courage to continue after taking a ball to the nose from a deflection. Oliver Mathias, Joel Chinn, Massimo Gywnne and Matthew Coates were also part of the successful squad. Coach Rachel Kimberley said the players showed great strength and belief.
Horsham Sparrows Girls U14 climbed to third in the league by beating Adur Girls U14 6-0. Charlotte Long and Sienna Haydon each scored twice. Layla Burn and Ellie Hewer were also on target as Sparrows produced an excellent second-half performance. Southwater Red U18 won 6-0 at Billingshurst U18 in Division A of the Arun and Chichester Youth League. Josh Tobutt (three), Adam Laker (two) and George Whiting scored. Horsham U18 striker Zak Comber continued his stunning start to the season with a hat-trick for Roffey Robin Wanderers U16. His treble was enough to see off Steyning Strikers U16 3-1 in Division A of the Horsham and District Youth League. Hardworking Harry Hinchey also impressed. In the same division, Harry Garman starred in the centre of defence as Royal United U16 were held to a 0-0 draw at Twins Oaks U16. Playing with a virus, captain Jacob Waller appeared to have scored from Jake Legrange’s cross but was
Athletics The Alfred Shrubb five-mile crosscountry race will take place on Sunday, October 23, starting at Slinfold Cricket Club (11am). A children’s race over about half a mile will start at 10.15am, with each child and adult competitor receiving a medal. Horsham Joggers hope local residents will support the event in memory of Slinfold-born Alfred Shrubb, who held many world records in the early part of the 20th century. Event spokesman Cliff Comber said: “Please do come and celebrate this local hero who must not be forgotten. Efforts are being made to arrange a fitting memorial.” Nathan Shrubb, who has entered again after winning last year, is a distant relative of the great runner. Entry forms are available on www. sussexraces.co.uk and at Up and Running, 20 Queen Street, Horsham. Entries will be accepted until 10.30am on the day.

thwarted by a mysterious offside decision. Also in the very competitive Division A, Dorking Saints U16 won 4-1 at Horsham Sparrows U16. Sparrow’s James Cooper was denied by a fantastic save before Zac Chinn netted a consolation goal from Toby Bridger’s neat through ball. Lower Beeding and Handcross Lions U15 suffered a 4-0 defeat at Horley Town U15 in Division A. Midfielder Jared Ashmole made some fantastic saves in goal, but Lower Beeding started well in the second half with shots from all angles by Liam Ruz and Aaron Pyzer. Horley scored their fourth on the break and great saves by the home side’s goalkeeper kept Lions at bay. Sean Gulliver was man of the match. Broadbridge Heath U13 produced an outstanding display of passing to beat East Grinstead Town U13 3-0 in Division A. Captain Joel Colbran scored twice from long range and Jordan Bell added a penalty, his seventh goal of the season, after a foul on Jack Sizzey. Heath’s midfield of Colbran, Jamie Corps, Mitchell Clark and Joe Kirkham dominated possession, while full backs Harley Tusler and Tom Haines got forward at every opportunity.
Chesworth Rovers U12 fought back from 3-1 down to beat Partridge Green U12 4-3 in a Division B thriller. Jake Hull scored three times in the second half, his third successive hattrick, including the winner after Tom Ogborn’s fierce shot. Sam Hughes also scored. Seven players got on the scoresheet for Chesworth Rovers U11 in an entertaining 9-2 win at Dorking Saints
U11 in Division A. Jack Frankland (two), Jed RidsdaleHooper (two), Josh Baker, Henry Browning, Archie Talbot, Reece Turner and Tim Bennett did the damage. Forest U10 won 3-1 and 4-1 in a double-header at Southwick Rangers U10. Josh Dance (two) and Jamie Atkins scored in the first match, Luca Cocoracchio, Jamie Buchanan, Richard Bailey and Stan Ward in the second.
Atlantis swimmers enjoyed success in the first gala of the season, a sprint meet hosted by Brighton Swimming Club. Stand-out performances came from Lauren Pedel (50m back) and Jade Stocker (50m breast), who both won with county qualifying times. Beth Britton took the 100m individual medley, breaking her personal best by three seconds. Andy Lobley, Atlantis’ deputy head coach, said: “We are delighted with our results. We achieved a staggering 42 county qualifying times, but more exciting than that was they came from 20 individual swimmers.”
