Doreen and Noel Webster sip a ‘Singapore Sling’ at the world-famous Raffles Hotel during the couple’s incredible around the world adventures. During recent years, the Partridge Green couple have visited some of the world’s most exotic destinations - Fiji, New Zealand, China, Alaska, Brazil and the Caribbean. But while such trips might be relatively common, Doreen and Noel’s story is a little more remarkable, for Noel has been wheelchair bound since suffering a stroke, aged 68, in 1996. At the time, they feared it would shatter their dreams of a happy retirement in Spain - but instead of pondering ‘what might have been’ they embarked on a wide range of intrepid adventures. During their many expeditions, Doreen took down notes, and has now penned what she calls ‘a human-interest story about illness and recovery’ called Round the World in a Wheelchair. Doreen’s book demonstrates

that with Noel’s resilience and his wife’s no- nonsense devotion, life is still as rich and enjoyable as ever, and that their travelling days, far from being over, are only just beginning. Doreen said: “I kept a diary while we were travelling and when we returned home I just transferred the best bits into the book. “Obviously in a wheelchair there are some things you cannot do, and it’s far easier to get around the modern cities than the historic ones, but the most overwhelming factor is how helpful people are. “When we arrived at the Great Wall of China, Noel thought he’d have to look on from a distance, but four local people carried him to the wall. Even in Colombia, people would drop what they were doing to help. “The worst place in the world is actually Heathrow airport!” Doreen Webster will be signing copies of Round the World in a Wheelchair at Waterstone’s, Horsham, on Saturday, 20th Feb, at 11am-2pm.

Wanted Men Horsham Police are appealing for witnesses after a second taxi driver was robbed in Horsham in two days. They have also released these Efit images of the suspect in each of the cases. The latest attack happened in South Holmes Road, Roffey, just before 11.45pm on Monday 8th February when a man who had just b e e n picked up outside the Bedford Arms pub in Horsham, told the driver t o

stop, produced a knife, and stole a quantity of cash. The driver received a very slight cut when the knife was held to his face but did not need medical treatment. The man ran off in the direction of Forest Road. He is described as being in his late twenties, about 5'10", of slight build and bald, wearing a greyish roll neck top with long sleeves, blue jeans and white or grey trainers. Detectives believe that the robbery may be linked to the previous one which happened just after 11pm on Saturd a y evening

6th February in when the offender took £100 from another taxi driver in Birches Road, Roffey. A knife was referred to but not seen and the driver was unhurt. Detective Constable Barry Collyer said: "These appear to be two isolated incidents and with help from local people we hope to find the offender quickly. “Local taxi drivers are being re-assured that we are treating this as a priority investigation, and our patrols in the area are paying particular attention to the late evening movements of

taxis. A number of lines of enquiry are being followed up." Anyone who may have been in the area where the offence took place, or who saw a man of this description running from South Holmes Road into the area of Forest Road in Roffey, is urged to contact DC Collyer at Horsham CID on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 1624 of 8 February. Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

So what else is it good for?

Live music venue

Robert Mayfield talks about the great acoustics of the venue, and he’s not making that up - there is a great sound in the building, and it’s been used for many gigs by local bands and music associations. Good local venues are in short supply, particularly after the loss of the Black Cat club last year.

Markets and events

There is still scope for it to be used more for community events. It is used for the occasional flea market (Record fairs are held there regularly) and exhibitions but is not utilised too often. It was also useful during last year’s Piazza Italia for Scalextric events

Potential features

On a lighter note, it would make a great focal point for public speaking debates (perhaps an idea for the general election), and would be an obvious and ideal vantage point for Fathers for Justice campaigners seeking publicity in Horsham. It would also make a great ‘fort’ for a giant game of town centre paintball.

A Hall lot of trouble As you can see, the Town Hall has probably endured worse than being turned into a fruit and veg store. During one election it was turned into a giant monument of propaganda. Perhaps we might see (Peace party Candidate) Jim Duggan’s name all over it in May! But it’s fair to say that the historic Town Hall is more respected, revered even, in this day and age. So when last week’s edition of The Resident hit the news stands with a big picture of what the Town Hall “might look like if it was used as a Bill’s Produce store, it triggered a quick response from those eager to see it maintained for community use. Local charity, the Blue Flash Music Trust expressed "severe doubt" about the announcement in this newspaper of Bill's Produce being open in the summer at the site of Horsham Old Town Hall.

Robert Mayfield, Treasurer of the Trust said: "Horsham District Council seems to remain 'in denial' about the true status of the Old Town Hall restaurant project. “There is no confirmation by the council that Bill has signed on the dotted line, or alternatively, whether he has signed with various caveats pending the outcome of current issues. “Indeed, Horsham District Council seemed very keen to inform us in two recent letters to the Trust that no contract had been signed with Bill's Produce. The Council also refused a Freedom of Information Request partly on the basis that other potential bidders might be deterred if current arrangements fell through." Martin Jeremiah, Business Consultant to the Trust confirmed: "The first issue appears to be the current formal investigation by the District Auditor.

This includes scrutiny of the Council's dealings over the Old Town Hall and questions surrounding the way a contract might be awarded to Bill's Produce. “In my view, there is strong

evidence to suggest that a bid evaluation between Bill's and a potential competitor was not all that it should have been. Indeed, there appears to be some doubt as to whether the other alleged bidder at that time made a formal bid at all. “There is also no current explanation as to why a market value bid of ÂŁ75,000 became

The Politics Show-Off Controversial newsagent considers political career Some people find a change of career quite daunting. But not Horsham’s John O’Sullivan. We wouldn’t even want to think about what his school careers officer suggested as a future line of employment for John, but we doubt it was newsagent, showman and politician. John is well known to townsfolk as the owner of two stores, the newsagent at Horsham Station, and The Candy Box in The Carfax. Next week, he takes his first steps onto the stage his self-penned show Newsagent Provocateur is a sell-out at the Capitol Theatre (see review in Feb 26th edition) which he

hopes will open new doors in entertainment. But now he has revealed that he is considering entering the race to become Horsham’s next MP at the next election. John said: “I’m really thinking about it, and I think a lot of people would vote for me. I certainly think I could appeal to the younger generation.

”But the trouble is, I wouldn’t want to just enter for the fun of it, I’d highlight real issues and I‘d want to win. “But there’s no way that Francis Maude is not going to win it (for the Conservatives). “For me, he does nothing for the town. Horsham’s MP should be someone you see in town every day, using the shops

here, talking to people, not just somebody who pops by for the occasional photoshoot in the County Times.” For now though, he is busy enough running two shops and preparing for his show. And John admits there are a few nerves. “It’s scary. People forget that I’ve never done anything like this. I’m basically just someone who works in a shop that has a dream of doing something different, and this is a chance.” John’s show sold out quickly, and the short promotional videos he has created (and we must say are really quite impressive) have been big hits on Youtube and

the Newsagent Provocateur website. But when it comes to the show, his lips are sealed. “I’m not going to reveal too much about the show but there are a few surprises. But I just want to do it now I’m tired of people coming into the shop and saying ‘Ooh, not long now!’”

news Player runs off There was some additional action during a football match at Jubilee Fields, Billingshurst on Saturday. One of the footballers was seen to run off into nearby woodland during play, as police made their way to the ground! A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Police were called to the Jubilee Fields at Billingshurst on Saturday afternoon following a report that a man wanted for questioning in connection with a serious assault had been seen in the area. “When police arrived, the man was seen to run off. A search was made of the area and a police dog was brought in to assist, but he was not located.” Police could not confirm the name of the person involved. Billingshurst won the game.

Haiti appeal

With the Laybrook Landfill petition now in the hands of the decision-makers, campaigners in Ashington have turned their attentions to another site under threat. West Sussex County Council’s Minerals and Waste Policy Document has outlined a number of potential sites, including Rock Quarry in Washington, and a potential open composting site at Broadbridge Farm. Perhaps wary of being charged with NIMBYism (Not In My Back Yard), Ashington’s parish councillors are keen to point out that they are in favour of recycling green waste and other recycling/sustainability projects (as opposed to an unsustainable landfill type activity). But they are certainly do not

feel that this site at Broadbridge Farm is not suitable for the proposed development for many reasons. An open air composting site would see an estimated 60,000 tonnes of compostable waste from brown-topped bins being deposited there each year. In a statement, the parish council said: “It must be remembered that there are farm buildings (office, barns and farmyard) less than 100m from the proposed site. “The farm owner would routinely be exposed to high levels of odour and airborne particles all of the time that he is working on the farm.” The statement adds: “There is a potential for noise pollution from the machinery operating at the site as well as the addi-

tional lorries on the A24. Ashington Community Plan 2010 lists noise reduction from the A24 and reducing the number of lorries through the village as very high priorities.” Brookhurst Wood and Langhurstwood Quarry in Horsham and Laybrook are also on the list of potential sites for non-inert landfill. Chantry Lane, Star Road Trading Estate and Golding Barn are other potential sites. The deadline for comments is February 26th to mwdf@westsussex.gov.uk The latest version of the West Sussex Minerals and Waste Development Framework can be viewed on the plans and policies page at http://www.westsussex.gov.uk

Mushrooms Sewage works King & Barnes

Tell people you live in Thakeham and the assumption is you must be at least 10% mushroom, and eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On a windy day the smell from the Sussex Mushrooms site drifts for many miles

Driving along the A24 between Broadbridge Heath and Hop Oast is usually just cause to start accusing fellow travellers of breaking wind. But it’s coming from the outside. In fact, it’s a very clever place to break wind...

Sure, we miss Horsham’s historic brewery, but not the potent smell it produced in the town centre. It was a smell that got stuck in the back of the throat. When driving by you had to hold your breath until you were at Tanfield

New bridal lines Brides to be who are tightening their belts (or garters!) and trying to stick to a strict budget would be very wise to visit their local Cancer Research UK shop in East Street, Horsham as they have now launched their new bridal department. Shop manager Victoria said: “Were really excited to try something new in our shop and have already collected a wide range of bridal wear but are asking for people to give their wedding dress where it will make an-

other lady very happy and raise vital funds. “Also if any wedding shops are clearing out their end of lines stock we would be very happy to take wedding items off their hands.” For more info contact Victoria on 01403 258526

news

Clamping down on illegal parking It’s fair to say that there are a number of issues surrounding parking in the district. There’s some niggling problems - why do the parking machines in the town centre not take 5p coins, and why do the Hop Oast machines insist on correct change? Some are more irritable - why should those who use the gym at the Pavilions or take their child for a 30 minute swimming lesson fork out for the standard ‘up to 3 hours’ parking, which has recently become more expensive? And then there’s the village parking disc scheme, which in places like Billingshurst has created almost as many problems as it solved in the first place. Many visitors unfamiliar with the scheme tend to drive on in a state of confusion! And now, just over a week since some parking charges were increased across the district, a new working group has been set

This Fiat Seicento was ‘inappropriately’ parked between a train of Ferraris during last year’s Piazza Italia up by Horsham District Council’s Scrutiny and Overview Committee at the request of a parish council in the district. The aim of the group is to look at the issues caused by inappropriate and illegal parking. The new group will be looking at the following: l To review existing planning policies l To review the existing enforcement regulations and meth-

ods of delivery l Review which measures can be taken to stop pavement and verge parking l To lay out clearly what actions can be taken in the event of a problem l Review the reasons why people park on the verges and pavements l To review the impact of parking on pavement and verges l Recommend changes to poli-

news

News from around our weird little world

Turning 30 affects people in different ways, but Gary Marlow suffered an extreme reaction. Now he’s on a mission to complete 30 feats for 30 charities! Number two was climbing London’s ‘The Gherkin’ at the weekend, as Gary reports...

Gary goes green for gherkin gig It was far too early a start, as the alarm went off at 6am on a Sunday! I managed to drag myself out of bed and ate loads of Weetabix to get me ready for the exploits of the day. I had help in the warm up, chasing my daughter up and down the train on the way to the ‘Big Smoke’. It then felt like I had already started the challenge, having to carry my bag and Ellie in her buggy up and down all the various flights of stairs in the underground! I arrived at the venue, 30 St Mary Axe. It was almost time, so headed outside for the official warm-up. Ellie also decided to join in. Heading back inside, hundreds of people were waiting to go up the Gherkin. Standing next to a fellow runner, I noticed he had one of the numbers I had wanted, 30. He did kindly offer to swap numbers but my 230 was sufficient bearing in mind this was the 2nd of 30 challenges. On your marks, get set, go

go go (as my daughter says). “I started fast enough, then slowed almost immediately, realising it was going be a killer on the calves. Reaching the 5th floor I had to stop to check on someone that was feeling dizzy but she said she was fine, so off I went again. After only 15 flights, the pain started building up in my legs, with only a slight respite every time I turned the corners at the end of each flight. While some runners had rapidly disappeared up the stairs, I was overtaking those for whom climbing the building was one of the hardest things they had ever done. My hat goes off to them.

The time and the 1,037 steps seemed to be going past pretty quickly – I

thought I was

doing well but on the 29th floor someone over took me! Heading up past the 30th floor – shivers went down my neck, realising the importance of the number, but then the moment passed into my legs – as they were “burning” with the build up of lactic acid. And there it was, the 38th floor – the final step – Challenge 2 was completed in a time of 7 minutes, 49 seconds. The views were stunning, and after a quick interview with a reporter, a huge thanks to David Painter and the HUTC (Hot Under The Collar) for their time, I headed back down the Gherkin, by lift thankfully this time. My training continues for the 3rd Challenge, the Portsmouth Half Marathon on 21st February 2010.

You dirty banker

An Australian banker is facing an uncertain future after he was caught looking at racy photographs at his desk during a live television broadcast. It’s not the guy in the picture here - who was discussing the bank’s interest rates during a live broadcast on Sky News, but the

chap to the left sat at his desk flicking through images of Miranda Kerr during the broadcast!

Two Chinese men who found a horde of priceless antiques in an ancient tomb did not realise their value and sold them for pennies. One of the artworks was a pottery figure of a woman worth nearly £100,000 which they sold for the equivalent of 28p. Feng and Zheng of Guying town,

Henan province, say they found the tomb while hunting hares in a field near their homes.

A tourist lost in the dark on a frozen sea off Germany was rescued after flashes from his camera were spotted on a beach webcam. The man had become lost after walking onto ice off St Peter-Ording to photograph a sunset. A woman watching the sunset via webcam hundreds of miles away

noticed the flashes. She alerted police who were able to guide the man to safety.

A third of Britons believe Family Guy's Peter Griffin is the leader of the British National Party, a study has found. One in three members of the public matched a picture of Nick Griffin, the BNP leader, with the name of Peter Griffin, star of the cartoon sitcom. The survey of 1,498 people also

found more were able to identify Alex Reid than recognised Gordon Brown.

A New Yorker faces a $135 traffic fine for using a mannequin as her plus-one in the high-occupancy lane of the Long Island Expressway. An alert sheriff's deputy on Long Island became suspicious when he saw the "passenger" wearing sunglasses and using the visor. The sky was overcast.

When he stopped the vehicle, he found the mannequin, dressed with a long dark wig.

That’s a good price! Webcam saves man Animated leader

Ride on! Bikers back for a party

Sakakini

The Resident online at visithorsham.co.uk

“Excuse me, do you mind? This is historic Horsham, a beautiful market town that regularly features in the most pleasant places to live in our great nation. “What do you think you are doing, riding in here on a motorbike with a beer barrel for a fuel tank? “Be off with you, go on, shoo!” Yes, it’s back! The Horsham Ride in Bike Show will be back this summer. Last year’s event, held at Ingfield Manor School in Five Oaks, attracted 200 bikes, while 40 entered competitions in categories such as Best Chopper, Best Plastic Fantastic, Best Streetfighter, Best Rat and Best Trike. We hope there was also a best self portrait in a motorcycle paint

job for this chap. Take a bow! Organiser Winifred Davey said: “Last year, the sun was shining, BBQ was going and local brew beer was served alongside with many different soft drinks and tea and coffee. It was a very successful event. “Everybody enjoyed themselves and we managed to fundraise for the school. In the evening, Chinese takeaway was delivered to the school by order and then rock bands were playing until midnight. “Due to the success of last year, and requests from people who came to the show, we have decided to hold this event again at the same place this year on 24th July 2010.” It’s something a little different for the district diary....

The Sopranos

Now for something completely different Nobody can accuse the Capitol Theatre of lacking diversity. Next weekend there will be a sell-out crowd to watch Candy Box owner John O’ Sullivan’s one man show, Newsagent Provocateur. If his short sketches are any guide, expect nothing less than a riotous mix of filthy innuendo and foul language. We’re half expecting gags to go beyond ‘near the knuckle’ and into ‘is it wrong to laugh at this’ territory... And on the other end of the class scale is The Sopranos. Direct from their sell-out European tour The Sopranos premier the UK. Eight talented ladies enthral, captivate and beguile the audience with timeless classics from the world of opera to Broadway, paying homage to the greatest divas the world has ever seen: from Shirley Bassey to Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland to Celine Dion. This makes for a glittering evening of everyone’s favourites not to be missed. The Sopranos have the audience eating out of their hands with their spine-tingling har-

monies and beautifully crafted arrangements, backed by a virtuoso band including a stunningly sassy string quartet. This lavish production performs some of the best-loved and instantly recognisable music of all time in its own, inimitable and evocative style: from hushed, intimate tones to full-throttle rock, the spine-tingling vocals unite with breathtaking h a r monies for an evening full of glitz, glamour and oodles of personality. The Sopranos truly is

a spectacular evening and this theatrical experience is one not to be missed. So don’t...book your tickets to the show, at the Capitol, on Tuesday, 16th March, at 8pm, from 01403 750220. Perhaps you’re the sort that enjoys political humour? In which case, The Joy of Politics, by T h e B l a c k Sheep, on We d ne sd ay, 3rd March, is not to be missed. The Black Sheep are award winning double act Andrew Jones and Ciaran Murtagh (pictured left), Radio 4 writers and

the creative team behind The Joy of Wine, I, Lear and Entertainium. The Black Sheep formed in 2002 when Andrew and Ciaran met at the Central School of Speech and Drama. Since forming The Black Sheep they have created and toured innovative comedy shows for all ages around the UK and Europe. They have performed in planes, lifts, crypts, toilets (literal and metaphorical) and remote Scottish Island (Colonsay, population 60). They have also appeared in many of the country’s finest theatres notching up an average of 150 performances a year including four critically acclaimed West End runs. In between they have written for the BBC, Foundation TV and Ragdoll Productions and have appeared together on BBC 1’s The Slammer, Radio 4’s Loose Ends, Radio 4’s Go For it, Radio 1’s The Milk Run, Radio 7’s Big Toe and on numerous local radio stations up and down the country. And now they’re at the Capitol. Tickets cost £14 .

Don’t miss out on pancake madness This year’s great Horsham Pancake Race coincides with Half Term and therefore the organisers thought that it would be even more fun to add some races for the kids. So, next Tuesday morning (16th February) starting at 10am in the Carfax there will be races for children aged from 4 to 11. Each age will have their own race and there will be a medal and a prize for the winner and the Best Fancy Dress. Sainsbury’s will be supplying the pancakes, The Rotary Club of Horsham, who are the organisers of the event, will be providing small frying pans for the very young, and the Non Stop Party Shop will be providing prizes. The children’s races will be ‘walked’ over 20 or 40 metres depending on age. Naturally, every participant will also have a chance to prove their ability to flip a pancake and is encouraged to either wear fancy dress. Each competitor must wear non slip shoes and older children should bring their

own frying pan. The entry fee is £1 per child with all proceeds being divided between the charities selected by the race winners. In order to enter your child, please email jleross@attglobal giving the child’s name, age and the name of the charity that they are racing for, or call 01403 754005, or just turn up on the

day, but only the first 25 children in each age group will be able to participate. The racing starts at 10am with the 4 year old race and then 10.15 for the 5 year olds etc, until 11.45am for the 11 year olds. Competitors should arrive at the registration area in the Carfax between 15 and 30 minutes ahead of their scheduled race

time. The children’s racing will be followed by a team event for local businesses and organisations between noon and 2pm. Mercury FM will be on hand during this period and there will also be music on the Bandstand from the cast of the The Dream Maker; a fun market and a clown to amuse the children.

Gigs l The Phil Collins album No Jacket Required has been shortlisted for the ‘Best British Album of the last 30 Years’ Brit Award this year. I think we’d all agree it’s a dodgy list (where’s Technotronic’s Pump up the Volume, I hear none

of you shout!) but it goes to show how popular Phil was, and still is. And around these parts, we have the ultimate tribute act - No Jacket Required. The band play at The Capitol on 30th April 1st May. Tickets £12.50.

l If you’re not really an ‘Against All Odds’ sort of person, the wonderfully named Tube Snake Boo-

gie Band are playing at Horsham Cricket Club this Saturday. All are welcome. Starts at 9pm.

Half term fun on The Forum

Visitors to Horsham are invited to have some Fun on the Forum this Half Term as the town sees family entertainment bought into the town centre during this school holiday. Stay safe at work

Toddlers set for groovy moves Brooklands Studios in Horsham is expanding with the launch of several new classes in March. Amongst the new additions for Brooklands, run by Casey Stone, is a Littlefoot class, where toddlers can learn basic dance steps to their favourite pop music and film hits. There will also be an adult fitness club launched and a Primary Dance Club for children aged 5 and 6. Brooklands has earned a fine reputation for its street dancing routines, but in recent years has branched out to incorporate singing, tap dancing, and various interpretations of

modern dance. The group’s shows, the most recent of which was the Pied Piper, feature a blend of singing and dance numbers. One number might see senior dancers in an edgy hip hop number, the next could see more than a dozen primary school aged children singing a Disney song! The group was formed by Casey in 2001, and began to grow at around the time when Casey was a finalist on the inaugural series of BBC1’s primetime Saturday night show, Strictly Dance Fever. But an horrific broken leg, sustained during a freak acci-

dent while watching her husband - Horsham captain Matt Stone - play a rugby match, put the dance studio’s future in jeopardy. but now the future looks bright once again. Casey said: “It has been a rollercoaster ride and I’m lucky that I have some very loyal dancers at Brooklands. “The principal dancers all pulled together when I was recovering and kept it going, and now the dance school is beginning to thrive once again. “At the moment, we are having to meet for classes at Horsham rugby club, but we’re hopeful of finding a permanent

arrangement in the town centre before too long. “Towards the end of the year we’ll be staging another big show, which is wonderful for the dancers and the parents, and the new members will have the opportunity to be involved in that.” Unlike some other dance schools, there is not the chance to pick up dancing qualifications, with Casey’s focus being very much geared towards a fun and friendly school with low fees for members. For details of classes, fees and productions visit www.brooklandsstudios.co.uk or call Casey on 07547 066025.

A new countywide initiative aimed at improving health and safety at work is being launched in the Horsham District this month. The aim of the project is to reduce injuries and ill health in the workplace through raising awareness, education and by taking enforcement action where necessary. Under the scheme, inspectors from all 13 local authorities in Sussex including Horsham District Council, and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), will join forces to promote and encourage safe practices within the workplace. Named CASE – ‘Common Approach to Sussex Enter-

prise’- the exercise started on Monday 1 February and runs for six weeks. Under the scheme, which uses flexible warrants, inspectors will visit workplaces on industrial sites and other locations across the country, to assess standards of health and safety management.

Grace Notes, in the persons of Maggie Boyle, Lynda Hardcastle and Helen Hockenhull, will be appearing at Horsham Folk Club on St Valentine's Day adding a touch of vocal enchantment to the evening. Maggie, Lynda and Helen perform both a cappella and accompanied arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs in three-part harmony. Their ethereal and enchanting vocals are supported by an impressive range of instruments with Maggie on flute and bodhran; Lynda on recorder and Helen on keyboard and concertina Now in their 17th year,

their highly praised harmonies and thoughtful repertoire is making them one of the folk scene's bestloved female groups. Tickets: £7 (Members £5), under 18s and students free; available on the door from 7.45pm, Sunday 14th February, Horsham Folk Club, Normandy Centre, Denne Road, Horsham, RH12 1JP. It’s taken some time but we’re starting to see the results of the hard work now.” The words of David Hyde, who has been landlord at the Southwater pub for a little over six months now, and has made sweeping changes. As the picture above shows, local ales are back on the menu, as the Cock Inn goes back to being a traditional family pub. Ales by three of Horsham’s breweries are on tap: Hepworth’s Prospect, Welton’s Export Stout and W.J King’s Horsham Best Bitter, as well as Sussex Mild, while framed pictures donated by the village historical society have added an air of authenticity for a traditional pub. After a short period of time when the Inn became an Indian restaurant, roast dinners are back on the menu, with full English breakfast served on weekend mornings. It’s all change on the inside and outside, with a fresh coat of paint and new signage brightening up the exterior and on the inside new wooden flooring and improved seating have made the pub far more welcoming. The garden is very much a work in progress, but there are big plans for the summer. David said: “It was a mess out there.

There were brambles 12 foot high and the grass was really long. The oldest beer can we found was from 1983, so that’s how long it’s been since there has been a good clear-up out there. It took a long time to clear and there’s more work to do. “But it’s looking a lot better now. We’ve cleaned up the barbecue so we’ll be using that in the summer. We’ve also put in a chicken run and

“The oldest beer can we found was from 1983, so that’s how long it’s been since there has been a good clearup in the garden”

children will be able to throw feed in. “We’ll be introducing some other things for children too. The idea is that we make it much more of a family pub and make good use of the garden.” You can’t help but be impressed with the changes at the Cock Inn, especially as, so far, the new management have found it difficult to turn the pub’s fortunes around. David has tried to create more of a cafe feel at the top end. There’s a cou-

ple of sofa chairs now in place, as well as high chairs for toddlers. Children can play with toys, and there’s even a baby changing room! David said: “It was a little formal up there but now we’ve changed it around and we’re hoping that people will find us a good place to come along for a coffee and a sandwich. “We were offering quite a varied selection of food but we have changed that. We now offer a full sandwich menu along with just a couple of main courses. “Then at the weekend we offer a full breakfast menu from 10am-12pm and roast dinner on a Sunday from 12-5pm, and that’s going really well. “We source our food locally, using Hutching’s butchers in Partridge Green, and word is starting to get around about what we are doing here. “It does take a while. I’ll be outside sweeping and someone will walk by and say ‘it’s nice to see the pub looking how it should do’. “We’re still struggling even now because of the pub’s past reputation, but there’s great potential here. “We’re not the finished article just yet, but we’re getting there.” Already the pub has established pool, darts and bar billiards teams (you can also play table football at the pub) and a number of games such as the Joker Hunt provide the regulars with good entertainment. It’s well worth a visit, if not now,

then certainly in the summer when David and his team will have hopefully created a pleasant garden area for families. For now, it’s great to see Southwater’s historic pub back in good hands.

RSPB offer free survey

Farmers in West Sussex are being offered the opportunity to have their land surveyed for free by trained RSPB volunteers. Now in its 11th year, the Volunteer & Farmer Alliance (VFA) aims to help farmers identify birds of conservation concern on their land and provides advice on how to help these species. Results are presented on a map with a list of all the bird species seen on the farm. Past results have shown

how the county’s farmers are providing vital habitat for birds. Any farmers or volunteers who would like to participate can email eleanor.burke@rspb.org.uk or call 01273 763616.

Cracking the code of house building Sussex Building Control, based at Horsham District Council, is running a free training session for local architects, builders and contractors at the end of February. The training session, entitled Cracking the Code, takes place on Tuesday 23rd February. Sustainability is the buzz word in the construction industry and local architects, builders and developers are building homes in the Horsham District and Crawley to meet the standards of the Government’s Code for Sustainable Homes. To help local businesses work with the Code this training session, presented by Celotex, manufacturers of sustainable insulation, will address the environmental issues that affect all individuals and organisations involved in the built environment through current and future legislation. Energy conservation in buildings is central to the Government’s climate change strategy and this seminar will discuss the possible changes to Part L of the Building Regulations over the coming years on the Road to Zero Carbon. Design solutions and practical recommendations will be provided to overcome typical problems designers and installers face as a result of the requirements of the Code. The free training session,

which is offered to local architects, builders and contractors as well as staff and members at Horsham District Council and Crawley Borough Council, is on Tuesday 23 February starting at midday and will be held in the Council Chamber at Horsham District Council, Park North, North Street, Horsham. Sussex Building Control provides building control services on behalf of Crawley Borough Council and Horsham District Council. The team of professional building control surveyors work from the Horsham District Council offices providing pre-application advice, checking plans and inspecting projects across the Horsham and Crawley areas

Sussex Building Control is also supporting a training seminar for local developers and contractors which gives an overview of fire safety in buildings.

l Sussex Building Control is a member of the national organisation Local Authority Building Control (LABC), which is running a presentation which addresses the key project tasks in designing, building and managing a building that is compliant and explains the responsibilities of professionals in each phase or activity. This training session aims to make attendees familiar with the issues surrounding fire,

such as how it starts, spreads, human behaviour and the potential consequences. Developers, occupiers, owners, architects and contractors involved in the procurement, design or construction of new build or refurbishment projects from the Horsham District are being encouraged to take part in the course. It is particularly aimed at those working in the education, health, hotel, commercial and residential sectors.

For more information or to book, email vanessa.good@horsham.gov.uk. To find out more about Sussex Building Control, visit www.sussexbuildingcontrol.org

Will rises fall flat? Mortgage fears

Mortgage brokers joined the debate about house prices this week. According to a survey by Platform, The Co-operative Bank’s intermediary lender, three quarters of mortgage brokers are predicting house price rises of up to 5% during 2010. A similar proportion believe there will be an increase this year in interest rates, which the Bank of England this week decided to retain at 0.5%. Three quarters believe interest rates will rise to 1% by the end of the year. Two thirds of those surveyed also believe business in the mortgage sector will be better in 2010 compared with last year. David Tweedy, director of Platform, said: "Intermediaries are confident the next 12 months will be positive for the market and that the sector is ready to do business." “In contrast the Halifax is predicting that house prices will remain stable for much of the year. House prices rose by 0.6% during January, according to latest figures from the Halifax. While this is the seventh month in a row that the lender has recorded a rise in prices the Halifax’s housing economist Martin

Lack of funding for the mortgage sector continues to be a concern for property market experts. Around half of mortgage brokers who responded to the Platform survey said they were concerned about the availability of funds to the mortgage sector. The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) is also fearful. It warned this week of a £300billion shortfall in the amount they will be able to lend which would normally be filled by savers' deposits. This funding gap has been filled through government schemes during the current economic crisis, but these run out in four years time. The CML is warning that first time buyers could be affected in the coming years as lenders

Ellis points out that the rise in January is below the monthly average rise of 1.1% for the previous six months.

House prices rose by 0.6% during January, according to latest figures from the Halifax the seventh month in a row it has reported a rise

He concludes that prices are set to remain flat for the rest of 2010, adding that there are signs that more people are putting their homes up for sale, which is likely to put the brakes on further price rises. The recent rises in prices of prime central London properties are also slowing down, according to latest figures from estate agency Knight Frank. Lack of funding for the mortgage sector continues to be a concern for property market experts.

look to restrict loans to those with a large deposit. The UK could be at risk “of a chronic under-supply of credit and the rationing of mortgages for customers for many years to come," says the CML. Landlords are also concerned by the lack of mortgage finance. Half of landlords who want to expand their portfolios say they are being frustrated by the lack of mortgage finance, according to a survey conducted by LSL Property Services, which owns the Your Move and Reeds Rains lettings chains.

Saving is ‘right thing to do’ UK homeowners have learnt the lessons of the credit crunch, according to one finance expert. Ed Bowsher, head of consumer finance at lovemoney.com, says that recent figures from the Bank of England's Lending to Individuals report show that homeowners are trying to repair their finances and save, which he believes is "absolutely the right thing to do". Additionally the report revealed that mortgage lending increased by a figure of £1.2 billion during December in comparison with the previous month. Mr Bowsher describes this as "a very modest kick upwards", adding that the statistics could be attributable to the fact that there are an increasing number of good mortgage deals coming on to the market. He states that despite the fact that the recession has officially ended, he does not expect there to be dramatic rises in mortgage lending figures in the immediate future as consumers are "still wary". The latest Nationwide Consumer Confidence Index recorded a three point increase in January to 73 per cent.

Stamp out bad landlords

Legislation that is already in place in the UK should be used to stamp out the worst landlords to ensure that renters receive the best quality of housing, it has been suggested. Alan Ward, chairman of the Residential Landlords Association, states that additionally, the organisation has announced an accreditation scheme, which is hoped to provide better standards for tenants. His comments come in response to the announcement of new government measures, which will give people who live in buy-to-let properties the chance to give online feedback on their landlords. The move is hoped to help tenants find safer and better homes to rent, while offering extra support if problems with their landlords or accommodation occur. Housing minister John Healey, when announcing the plans, also added that a new housing hotline will be open for business by the summer.

On the 30th January Choices opted to join in with the traders at the popular market, giving the Choices team a great opportunity to meet the public face to face. Paul Sharaton of Choices said: “We were able to speak to both landlords and tenants and this proved highly successful as we handed out many landlord

packs and registered many tenants looking for property to rent. “We have also had two properties since meeting landlords at the market. “Due to this success Choices will have a stand on the market on the last Saturday of each month and we look forward to seeing you all. “ If you have a property and require any information about renting it out or if you are a tenant looking for somewhere to rent contact Choices on 01403 793799

motors Ford grew its January car sales figures by almost 1,200 units according to new industry figures.. Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus continued as the first and second best sellers respectively in the UK market. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders confirms pole position for Ford after the first month of 2010 trading. The Blue Oval's 22,128 car sales in January were over five per cent up on 12 months ago. Ford's total was 6,122 cars ahead of its nearest rival.

Been a bad week It’s been a bad week for Toyota. Problems with a sticking accelerator pedal has meant the japanese manufacturer is recalling millions of cars. And while Toyota has been quick to point out that reported problems are extremely rare, the audio clip of the 911 call made by a driver in America who lost his brakes at 120mph, resulting in the death of all four people in the car, has raised fears. He was driving a Lexus, a division of the Toyota group. Miguel Fonseca, managing director of Toyota GB Plc has reassured UK customers about the safety of their vehicles. “Toyota is very sorry about the concern caused to its customers about the safety of their vehicles by the recall we have announced to fix an issue with the accelerator pedal in certain models. “Among the several million Toyota vehicles sold across Europe in the past five years there has been a small number of reported cases of drivers experiencing a problem with a sticking accelerator pedal. “There have been no reports of any accidents or injuries occurring as a result of this problem in Europe, or the UK.

“People who drive any of the models that are to be recalled should also be aware that this is not a problem that develops suddenly. There are warning signs that will indicate that your vehicle might have a problem, such as the accelerator pedal becoming harder to depress or slow to return to its normal position.” Here are some of the questions being asked, and some answers:

What exactly is the problem? There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.

What is the cause? Some accelerator pedal mechanisms may become worn. As a result, friction in the mechanism may increase and intermittently result in the accelerator pedal being hard to depress, slow to return or, in the worst case, stick in a partially open position. Are there any warnings that this condition exists? In some cases, the driver may no-

tice that the accelerator pedal is harder to depress or is slow to return. In some cases, the driver may notice a rough or chattering feeling when depressing/ releasing the accelerator pedal.

What is Toyota doing to address the issue in the UK? On 1 February 2010 Toyota confirmed a comprehensive fix for the accelerator pedals of the Toyota models planned for recall in Europe (seven in the UK, see below). Priority in the recall will be given to the older vehicles among those affected. Priority will also be given to those vehicles that have been the subject of specific customer complaints. When will recall work begin? Toyota expects the recall work to start immediately after the arrival of the required parts in the UK on Wednesday, 10 February.

How and when will Toyota be contacting affected customers? Toyota has confirmed exactly which UK models will be the subject of its safety recall and is now receiving the registration details and the contact details of the owners or registered keepers of these

vehicles from the DVLA. Using this information, Toyota is immediately contacting the owners/keepers to inform them that their vehicle is among those covered by the recall and that it will need to be taken to a Toyota service centre for attention.

What models are affected? Toyota has communicated details of the 180,865 affected UK vehicles to the DVLA. The total is made up of certain models from seven Toyota ranges: •iQ •Aygo •Yaris •Auris •Corolla •Avensis •Verso •Prius Toyota can confirm that, in the UK, manual Aygo models and all versions of RAV4 are not included in the recall. No Lexus models and no other Toyota passenger cars or light commercial vehicles are affected in the UK. Toyota advises customers who have concerns to contact Toyota GB Customer Relations on 0800 1388 744 0800 1388 744 for assistance.

BMW’s class-leading Sports Activity Vehicle, the BMW X5, will receive an array of design and engine changes offering even greater performance and lower emissions, whilst also updating its look. The new BMW X5 will be on sale from 5 June. Three new engines will be launched for the xDrive30d, xDrive40d – replacing the xDrive35d – and the xDrive50i – replacing the xDrive48i. All of the new powerplants now meet EU5 standards.

The year marks 75 years of the Jaguar name on both road and race cars. As a continuation of this great heritage, Jaguar can confirm it will return to the famed Le Mans 24 hours. With a total of seven wins, Jaguar is the single most successful British make in the race’s history. Jaguar will return to Le Mans this year lining up on the starting grid on 12th June 2010 with an XKR GT2 run by JaguarRSR.

Every so often, a car comes along that challenges conventional thinking. A car that offers much more than you’d expect for the money, redefines style, takes normal practice and turns it on its head. The new Chevrolet Spark is one such vehicle. Well, that’s at least what Chevrolet reckon. Maybe it’s an American thing - in the same way that the Superbowl is “the greatest show on Earth”. It’s on sale in all major European markets, including the UK, from the first quarter of 2010 Porsche have developed the new 911 Turbo S in response to customer demand for greater power, performance and driving dynamics. Building on the success and reputation of the revered 911 Turbo, at the heart of this most exclusive high-performance athlete is a six-cylinder ‘boxer’ en-

gine boosted by two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry. An increase in horsepower over the 911 Turbo of 30 hp boosts peak output to 530 hp (390 kW) and maximum torque is a most impressive 700 Newton-metres (516 lb-ft). Despite its significant increase

in power and dynamic performance, the new 911 Turbo S returns 24.8 mpg Combined (11.4 l/ 100 km) and as such offers identical fuel consumption to the regular Porsche 911 Turbo. In conjunction with the Launch Control function of the Sport Chrono Package Turbo that is also fitted as standard, the 911

Turbo S accelerates from a 0-62 mph in 3.3 seconds and reaches 124 mph in 10.8 seconds. Top speed is 196 mph . Customers will also be able to explore their 911 Turbo S and develop driving skills courtesy of a Driving Experience Programme at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.

Big Screen Legends 12

After Thelma and Louise, the third biggest star in the 1991 road movie was a 1966 Ford Thunderbird. Which isn’t bad going, seeing as brad Pitt was int he film. In the end, it all ends on a high - then a low - as Thelma and Louise, pursued by the police decide to “keep going” and drive off a 2,000 foot cliff. Louise's classic T-Bird convertible symbolises the freedom that she and Thelma so recklessly pursue. Their actions spiral out of control as the two of them

Thelma and Louise

make their way across the country in the T-Bird, particularly with the ever-moredaring Thelma, who has shed her giggly, goofy personality for a determined, aggressive, hard-drinking one. When a policeman (Jason Beghe) stops them for speeding, Thelma threatens the policeman with her gun, steals his gun, and locks him in the trunk of his cruiser. Thelma and Louise are finally cornered by police at the edge of a 2000-foot cliff. Rather than be captured and spend the rest of their

lives in jail, they decide to drive the car over the cliff and commit suicide. The film ends with a freeze frame of the car in mid-air. End credits begin over a montage of their happiest moments together during the weekend. The convertible, went up for auction in Arizona in 2008. It sold for $65,000. At the same auction William Shatner's 1995 Harley-Davidson sold for $30,000 and the 1966 GTO Monkeemobile, which brought $360,000.

Brave Lions denied tournament victory Last Sunday Horsham Lions U10s rugby squad joined Haywards Heath, Heathfield, Hastings and Hove to compete for the annual and hotly contested “H” Cup. This year’s tournament was hosted by Heathfield & Waldron RFC and the event coincided with the opening of their new pitch “Cypress Field”. Horsham started strongly with a 2-1 win against Heathfield. Within virtually the first play of the game Joe Blake made a storming run from the half way line to score his first try of the tournament. Jonathon Stanway followed this with a further try ensuring a triumphant beginning to the day. In a very close and fiercely contested second game which could have gone either way, Horsham were defeated 1-0 by major rivals, Haywards Heath who eventually went on to become overall winners of the tournament. Horsham bounced back in their third game by securing a 20 victory against Hove. It was a massive team effort with key plays by Dan Longo on the wing and Oscar Quigley breaking through the centre of play, gaining rightful reward for the con-

stant pressure he imposed throughout the game. The Lions final contest was against Hastings which they won convincingly 6-0, with a hat-trick of tries by Joe Blake, whose play was solid throughout the tournament. Further tries were scored by Dan Longo, Max Paterson and

Vince Everitt who, in particular, showed awesome power by delivering some great drives. Once again the Lions teamwork was outstanding and it is significant that just the one try snatched overall victory from them. Coach Rob Stanway looked

back on the tournament and said “All the squad played well. If we had drawn against Haywards Heath, in what was a close game, we would have won the tournament. “Everybody tried their best today.” www.horshamrufc.co.uk

and frustration to both sides through a number of puzzling decisions, culminating in the contentious dismissal of Alex Haddow, who was shown a second yellow card for an alleged trip on Warren Harris five minutes from time. Without a league goal in more than 3.5 hours of football, no-one would have anticipated the whirlwind start from the home side that produced 2 quickfire goals in the first 11 minutes, with Hutchings and Nwachukwu at the heart of things. The first, on 8 minutes, owed much to two of the club's more senior players as Haddow's fine cross was headed powerfully goalwards by Andrews and Nwachukwu was quickest to react after Paul Burgess could only parry the ball away, the youngster stabbing the ball home at the foot of the post. The biggest cheer, though, undoubtedly came when Hutchings claimed his first senior goal for the club in Horsham's next attack. Acheampong's measured pass played Nwachukwu in to space beyond the full-back and the tal-

ented winger raced to the goalline before pulling the ball back for Hutchings to thrash a first time shot high in to the net. It was tremendous start for Horsham and totally vindicated the manager's decision to include the youngsters in the starting XI. Horsham’s third goal was, once again, as stunning in its execution as it was in its inception. Inevitably, Nwachukwu was involved when he and Sargent combined to set Andrews free down the right and when the big target man crossed low and hard in to the penalty area, Harding stepped over the ball to allow Haddow a free strike and he made no mistake, rifling the ball in to the bottom corner of the net with Burgess given no chance. Ashford were given a dubious penalty but justice was done as Pelling guessed correctly and dived to his right to smother Brian Haule's weak effort to maintain Horsham's 3-0 advantage at the break. More controversy was to follow, 8 minutes after the restart, when Johnson attacked down the wing and centred for the un-

marked England to shoot at goal from less than 5 yards out. Pelling spread himself full length to repel the Ashford man's effort and grab hold of the ball as it spooned above him, only for the linesman to indicate that the ball had crossed the line. Quite how the official could have made such an important decision, positioned close to the Ashford dug-out rather than in line with play, is anyone's guess and Pelling's anger was compounded with a yellow card for his protests. Horsham engineered another good break that was to result in their 4th goal on 64 minutes. Knee passed inside to Sargent and the midfielder played a delightful ball behind the full-back for Haddow to cross for Harding who finished at the second time of asking, after Burgess and the post had kept out the striker's first attempt. Horsham though were to pick up several yellow cards as they held on to their 4-1 lead, and move on to eighth in the table. Next match: v Maidstone United (a) Saturday 13th February ko 3pm

Vital win comes at a price Horsham 4 Ashford Town 1

Horsham put their recent defeats against Boreham Wood and Kingstonian behind them to see off the challenge of inform Ashford Town with a performance described by John Maggs as "one of the best of the season." On a night of high drama, and talking points aplenty, it was Horsham's teenage trio that particularly caught the eye with Adam Hutchings and Tony Nwachukwu grabbing the goals in a devastating opening spell that left the visitors' 12 match unbeaten run in tatters. Not to be outdone, 18 year old Josh Pelling marked his home debut with a series of vital saves including a first half penalty from Brian Haule to help move the Hornets to within a point of the play-off positions. The result was tainted, though, by a less than convincing display from the match officials who caused frequent bemusement

For the first time ever in Cottesmore Golf and Country Club’s history, two ladies tied for the Par Tree Trophy at the end of year results. Shirley Vance from Horsham and Marion Hollands from Crawley were the joint winners achiev-

ing 14 pars each over the summer period. The par tree is a feature of many golf clubs particularly to encourage the higher handicappers – the player has to get the ball in the hole for the amount accredited to the hole. Not as easy as it sounds!

Sparrows girls battle for draw Horsham Sparrows Under 12 girls team faced Littlehampton on Sunday. After beating their “Yellow” team 4 -1 a few weeks back, expectations were high for Sparrows. The starting lineup was Fran, Georgia, Chloe, Lucy, Keyannea, Sienna and Georgina. Subs were Hope, Charlotte and Ellie. Sparrows won kick off but lost possession virtually straight away and in the early stages struggled to play as a team. Sienna came off and Charlotte went on as Sparrows attempted to strengthen the midfield. The girls gave 100% commitment and had bags full of enthusiasm but had forgotten the basics control, pass, move, much to the frustration of the coaches. The defence held strong and Sparrows did push hard for a goal but Littlehampton kept it simple, passed the ball around and found the back of the net. But Horsham picked themselves up and things were starting to look promising but the shooting was still a little off target. A substitution was made and back on came Sienna. With the words from the coach still ringing in her ear, she grabbed hold of the

ball, took a touch, put her foot straight through the ball and hit it nice and hard but more importantly low and directly into the corner. It was a great finish and things were starting to look up. Hope came on for Georgina to pile on the pressure for their defence and Ellie gave Lucy a chance to take a breather. Half time came and went and Sparrows continued to work hard. Sometimes, they played great counter attacking football but couldn’t find the right pass up front to finish the job off. Coach Tony Monella said: “We were a team of individuals this week which doesn’t please me as I encourage everyone to play as a team. “Our first touch on the whole, was also a point of concern. We have Oakwood this weekend at home who have now taken 4th place away from us. “The week after is our semi final so we really need to up our game and attitude before then. Hopefully, this week’s game has acted as a wake up call. “I was pleased with the team’s commitment this week and now we need to add the concentration and skill that I know we have.”

Horsham Juventus progressed into the quarter final of the Sussex County Sunday Cup with a 10-3 victory against Pink Flamingos from Brighton. After a slow start Juve went behind after but soon equalised when a long throw from Karl Mitchell-Harris found Ryan Archer to knee in at the back post. Juve took the lead when another long throw found Josh Archer who found some space in the area to sidefoot home. Horsham Juventus never looked back and scored again when Man of the Match Mitchell Harris’ flick on found Damon Aston to round the keeper and put juve 3-1 up. Juve 4th was clearly goal of the

game when Aston, from 30 yards, hit a screamer which left Flamingos’ keeper no chance. In the second half Juve started off strongly and Grant Miller teed up Shaun Findlay to poke home and minutes later Aston’s shot found the unmarked Charlie Hodgson to make it 6-1. Pink Flamingos did pull a couple of goals back but when Josh Archer won and scored a penalty the game was over. Archer then got his hat-trick and Findlay added another. Monkey Adams, making his comeback from injury, set up Aston for his hat-trick, scoring from a tight angle. Horsham Juventus next travel to Brighton side Mitre Tavern.

We were Robbed! Horsham 0 Kingstonian 1

Horsham put up a spirited display against high-flying Kingstonian but were unable to find a way past their former goalkeeper Rob Tolfrey. His two stunning saves helped the visitors record their third league win in a row to close the gap on faltering leaders Dartford. In front of Gorings Mead's second highest gate of the season, swelled by a fairsized travelling contingent, the Hornets were second best during a fairly turgid first half in which arguably the most telling piece of action produced the game's decisive moment when Carl Wilson-Denis headed home his 11th goal of the season on 31 minutes. It took the introduction of Tony Nwachukwu to liven up the hosts after the break but Tolfrey put in a near faultless display to frustrate his former team-mates as they laid siege to his goal for much of the second half and, when he was finally beaten, the woodwork came to his aid to deny Sam Tucknott a sensational equaliser. These two sides played out a superbly entertaining match on the Kingsmeadow carpet back in September but the chances of a repeat looked unlikely as the sides made their way on to a gluepot of a pitch, littered with potholes, divots and scatterings of sand. The Hornets had a sniff of

an opening, just before the half hour, when Tolfrey's underhit clearance fell for Tucknott who showed great awareness to pick out Jack Page with a sweeping pass but Jolley was back in the nick of time to clear the ball away from danger as the 'keeper rushed quickly back to his goal. The near-miss jolted Kingstonian in to a response and a terrific crossfield pass from Matt Gray sought out Hickie who forced a fine save from Bradshaw at his near post. From the corner, leading scorer Bobby Traynor turned provider by chipping the ball towards the far post where Wilson-Denis headed home from close range. The visitors would have extended their lead three minutes later, had it not been for the reactions of Bradshaw. Moments later, Harding was unable to find the space

to shoot inside a packed area and a rare chance was wasted although Jack Page's follow-up shot produced a loud appeal for a penalty after the ball appeared to strike a hand. The appearance of Nwachukwu after the break was acknowledged by appreciative applause from the Horsham faithful and the youngster wasted little time in making his mark, embarking on an exciting run down the right-hand touchline before being upended unceremoniously by Hickie who received a caution for his sins. Kingstonian were struggling against the pace of Horsham's nippy wingers and Maggs added another dimension to his side when he replaced the excellent Payne with Haddow and the new arrival would have been celebrating a Horsham equaliser within seconds,

had Seanla's header not cleared the crossbar from Sargent's inviting free-kick. Nwachukwu continued to torment the visitors down the right-hand touchline, and the home fans were certainly enjoying what they were watching, as their side provided the commitment and workrate to match Nwachukwu's skill. Tolfrey then pulled off the first of his double saves when a great cross from Nwachukwu saw Sargent's mishit shot turned goalwards by Harding but Horsham's former number one stopper produced an incredible block from point-blank range. Maggs pushed the limping Andrews in to the attack for the final quarter of an hour as the frantic siege continued on Tolfrey's goal where Harding and Haddow saw efforts kept out by brave blocks by the Ks defence. But it was evident that this was destined not to be Horsham's afternoon when a scintillating moment of play ended in further heartache. Hutchings' persistence saw him win possession of the ball in midfield and find Sargent with a pass. A sweeping pass from the former Leatherhead midfielder was inch-perfect for Tucknott who raced to the edge of the box before unleashing a spectacular strike that crashed off the crossbar. Then late on, Nwachukwu's delicate flick looked like earning a thoroughly deserved point until Tolfrey arched himself backwards to turn the ball over the crossbar with his outstretched fingertips.

No fewer than four of Horsham Trinity’s batsmen were run out as they lost to Roffey in the Under 16s Identilam Colts Indoor Cricket League at Tanbridge on Saturday. The other two wickets were accounted for by Sam Collins, who in his only over took two wickets for no runs as Trinity only managed 39-6. Only Tom Norris reached double figures, but this was all about good fielding and wicket-keeping from a young Roffey side. For Roffey, Oli Bidlake, 17*, and Tom Barnes, 12*,under no pressure, were able to knock off the runs comfortably. Horsham won the toss ,and elected to bat, and although losing wickets at regular intervals, they made a very respectable total of 124-4 ,thanks mainly to Joe Humphries,29*,& Jack Dean,17*. For Ifield, Kuldep Patel was the best bowler with figures of 2-33. Horsham’s bowling was very accurate, and Ifield’s batsmen were

unable to get the ball away, and although several batsmen made a start, a good spell from Daniel Vernon (2-12) applied the brakes. Only Chris Child resisted the Pulborough attack with a score of 21, but Shane West’s spell of 3-12, from his 3 overs , completely undermined them and they were all out for 70 in 11.3 overs. Southwater’s bowlers kept them in the game, taking wickets at regular intervals, but Shane West took 18 off the ninth over, and it was all over. RESULTS Group A

Roffey 42-0 (16 Pts) beat Horsham Trinity 39-6 (0pts) Horsham 124-4 (14pts) beat Ifield 73-5 (2 pts) Pulborough 71-4 (16pts) beat Southwater 70-6 (2 pts)

West Sussex cup cancellations

Cup competitions involving West Sussex Football League clubs have been cancelled, due to a massive backlog of league fixtures due to the weather. Chris Bridges, general secretary and fixtures secretary, said: “At the Committee meeting last Thursday we discussed the future of the Cup competitions in view of the present backlog of fixtures.

“I spent a lot of time analysing the situation and after a lengthy discussion the committee regrettably decided to abandon all of them with immediate effect. “We did not take this decision lightly and I am sure a number of clubs will be particularly disappointed but we had no option in order to finish the League season.”

Sam Wheeler was in inspiring form for Royal United

PICTURES: CHRIS WOOLGAR

Royals leave it late Rasmus Madum produced a last-gasp winner as Royal United beat championship rivals Southwater on Saturday morning. In a thrilling encounter at Phillips Field, Under 11 Division D leaders Royal United extended their advantage over second place Southwater. A tense game of relatively few chances suddenly came alive in the final moments, with the grit and determination of Southwater (in red) up against the attacking flair of Royal United. United hit the woodwork three times in ten frantic final minutes as Southwater rode their luck, but persevered to claim all three points with Madum’s close range finish. For the most part, the first half was a battle of the midfield with few moments of class football. The Royals had the better of the chances though. Robbie Brightman forced Eddie Law into action with a fierce drive towards goal after great work from Sam Wheeler on the left. And the same two attackers combined well once again, with Brightman missing from close range after a blistering Wheeler charge down the left flank. But for the most part Southwater’s central defensive pairing of Dan Casey and Ben Kidner dealt with the Royals’ attack, and Southwater could have gone into half-time a goal to the good. A long ball set Tom Cockram

free for a one-on-one chance, but he dragged his shot wide of the left post, and it was goalless at the break. The second half though was far more entertaining. Royals took a deserved lead, and it was the ever-threatening Sam Wheeler who scored the goal. It looked as though he had blown his chance as Southwater’s back line was quick to close him down, but a lovely turn on the edge of the box tricked defender Dan Casey, who had stuck admirably to his man for most of the game. It allowed the yard he needed for the shot. Eddie Law in the Southwater goal couldn’t quite get across to keep out the shot. But he made up for that moments later. Boosted by the goal, Royals poured forward, and a sweet shot by Matthew Blogg looked destined for the back of the net. But Laws pulled off a spectacular mid air save with his legs to keep his team in the game. And within a couple of minutes, Southwater equalised, a little against the run of play. Ben

Clark scored a goal from nothing, chasing down a hopeful ball down the left flank, sticking out a boot and finding the net with a great strike from the edge of the box. Suddenly, t h e m o men-

tum of the game had turned. Cameron Houston, who had been limited to just a few attacking runs, came close to putting the reds ahead, and suddenly Royal United’s small but feisty defender Gareth King needed to raise his troops. Southwater’s number 11 then had a great chance after being put through oneon-one after a probing run by Ro b b i e Walder, who was beginning to dominate in central midfield. But Royals weathered the storm, and a change of tactics saw them throw an extra man up front for the final ten minutes. It was a move that was to pay dividends. Daniel Huddlestone looked to have won it, but under pressure from two defenders, he could only poke his shot against the left post. Moments later, a mazy run saw Wheeler waltz into the box, but a superb last ditch challenge by Cockram denied him. Laws then came to

Southwater’s rescue once again, denying United’s Rasmus Madum, before Blogg hit the left post as Southwater desperately defended in the final minutes. Southwater had a chance to steal it, but nobody could apply the finishing touch to a dangerous cross that drifted right in front of the goal. But just as it looked as though Southwater might earn a point for their endeavour, Madum broke their hearts with a late winner. The ball found its way to the edge of the box and Huddlestone slammed the ball against the crossbar. But luckily for the Royals it bounced down right at the feet of the grateful number 7, who made no mistake from close range. It was no less than Royal United deserved, with several excellent individual performances from the likes of Sam Wheeler, Adam Brown and Gareth King, combined with some good passing football. But it was a cruel way for Southwater to lose, having produced such a determined performance. Please send in your reports to The Resident. Horsham shoot down Rangers PICTURES: JOHN LINES

Horsham 7 Lancing 1

Under 14s Youth

We may be well in to February, but Horsham Youth Under 14’s played only their third home game of the season on Saturday. Despite the lack of football, Horsham kept up their challenge at the top of the Arun & Chichester League with a thumping win against third place lancing Rangers. The result sees Horsham go fourth, just two points off leaders Sompting and with games in hand on all the teams above them. Horsham started the game brightly and took the lead with a great strike from 20 yards by Connor Cushing in the 6th minute. Horsham played some nice football which resulted in Stanley Rice getting Horsham's second goal after 17 minutes.

Lancing conceded a penalty in the 24th minute which was nicely put away by Jacob Waller. Lancing got out of the starting blocks first in the second half with a goal within the first 45seconds, but Horsham soon regained control of the game with Stanley getting his second goal. In the last 10 minutes Zak Comber got a hat- trick with the first in the 60th minute. His second was 2 minutes later and then Zak completed the rout with a penalty in added time.

Roffey Robins Ath U14s 3 Maidenbower Colts 1 An entertaining first half failed to produce any goals, as both defences held firm. Maidenbower came out the stronger in the second half, and took an early lead after 5 minutes. Roffey had a penalty appeal turned down straight after, but this just inspired Roffey,

and attack after attack eventually lead to a goal mouth scramble that saw a Matt Sigrist shot come off the post, the rebound was hit by Connor Pollard, but the goal bound shot was somehow saved by the defender on the line, again the ball rebounded out, this time to Max Lewis, who finally drove the ball home from 6 yards. Roffey were far the better side in the second half, and after good work from George Hole on the left, his cross was well finished by Matt Sigrist. Roffey nearly got caught on the break, but a combination of Roffey keeper Jason Durrant and man of the match Omar S-King, kept the ball out. Connor Pollard made the game safe, slotting from 5 yards with 10 minutes to go. Royal United U14's 8 Albury Eagles 2 Having not played since 7th November, Royal United (above) were eager to get back to playing football and

thats just what they did against Albury. Zac Love beat the keeper for United’s first. With Albury being rushed into playing the ball early and giving the ball away, Jake Legrange added a second. The Royals could have gone further ahead with opportunities being created in midfield from Tom Frankland & Stanley Rice, but it was man of the match Connor Cushing who scored a first half hat-trick including a 20 yard thunder bolt of a free kick.

Albury hit back with a goal within the first 5 mins of the second half. However, Jake Legrange added his second before Royals captain Jacob Waller added another. Credit to Albury who never gave up and added a second, but Royals got their final goal when Zac Love was up-ended in the box and Jacob Waller cooly converted the resulting penalty to finish 8-2. Their were excellent performances from Lewis Clark, Aaron Chaplin, Harry Garman & Reiss Blackwood.
