Doreen and Noel Webster sip a ‘Singapore Sling’ at the world-famous Raffles Hotel during the couple’s incredible around the world adventures. During recent years, the Partridge Green couple have visited some of the world’s most exotic destinations - Fiji, New Zealand, China, Alaska, Brazil and the Caribbean. But while such trips might be relatively common, Doreen and Noel’s story is a little more remarkable, for Noel has been wheelchair bound since suffering a stroke, aged 68, in 1996. At the time, they feared it would shatter their dreams of a happy retirement in Spain - but instead of pondering ‘what might have been’ they embarked on a wide range of intrepid adventures. During their many expeditions, Doreen took down notes, and has now penned what she calls ‘a human-interest story about illness and recovery’ called Round the World in a Wheelchair. Doreen’s book demonstrates

that with Noel’s resilience and his wife’s no- nonsense devotion, life is still as rich and enjoyable as ever, and that their travelling days, far from being over, are only just beginning. Doreen said: “I kept a diary while we were travelling and when we returned home I just transferred the best bits into the book. “Obviously in a wheelchair there are some things you cannot do, and it’s far easier to get around the modern cities than the historic ones, but the most overwhelming factor is how helpful people are. “When we arrived at the Great Wall of China, Noel thought he’d have to look on from a distance, but four local people carried him to the wall. Even in Colombia, people would drop what they were doing to help. “The worst place in the world is actually Heathrow airport!” Doreen Webster will be signing copies of Round the World in a Wheelchair at Waterstone’s, Horsham, on Saturday, 20th Feb, at 11am-2pm.
