lthough this is the February issue, it’s World Book Day on 1 March. To that bookend, we thought we’d help you get prepared in advance and suggest five new titles you should read in 2012. They’re so hot off the press, one of them was only released this month. We are also honouring Roald Dahl, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the BFG and the work of illustrator Quentin Blake with a new set of stamps launched by Royal Mail, on the next page. Speaking of books, in Charles Dickins’ Hard Times, Mr Gradgrind stated: “Now, what I want is, facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but facts.” I suppose that is one way of educating young people. But having spoken to a few headmasters for this month’s feature on independent schools I have learnt that when it comes to your children it’s not only what they know that matters. Instead, many of the schools I spoke to value confidence, manners and happiness over good grades – although that is still very much a priority. Probably the biggest lesson I learnt in doing my

research was that it’s less about the size of the classroom and more about every individual having the opportunity to reach their potential. On the subject of potential, 23 year-old Jaered Glavin travels the world as a ballet dancer for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, having started dancing in Sussex at the age of just two. He says that from the very beginning he knew it was what he wanted to do with his life, and he is a shining example that if you work hard and stay focused the possibilities are endless. If you need any more motivation to live the life you were destined for, then perhaps you’ll get it from our second article on finding your calling. Learn three steps you can take today to help you live your life on-purpose and achieve your goals, whether that is a new job, losing weight or simply cooking the perfect steak, which we also show you how to do on page 57. As always, there’s the very best in property and events, plus we have introduced travel and motors to the magazine. This month take a tour of the real New York and have a look at some new cars that are green as well as stylish. Happy reading.

Remembering

Name the books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda and the BFG and you will probably experience a wave of nostalgia. If you haven’t read them yourself, chances are you had them read to you or have read them to your children. The books (although no introduction is necessary) were written by Roald Dahl and together his collection, which also includes The Twits, George’s Marvellous Medicine and many more, has sold in excess of 55 million copies. In 2008 he was named by The Times as the 16th greatest author since 1945. His ability to write imaginative stories for children (and plenty of adults too) is, as yet, unsurpassed, and words like Snozcumber and Whizzpoppers will be engrained on many a memory forever more. Born in Wales in 1916, Roald Dahl, a lover of books, was mostly raised by his mother a lively storyteller to whom he paid tribute in The Witches with the character of the Grandmother. He loved reading and as an older child some of the early titles that inspired him included Captain Marryat as well as work by Dickens and Thackeray. In 1990 at the age of 74, Dahl died. Shortly before, to his fans, he wrote ‘feeling sleepy when I shouldn’t have been and without that lovely old bubbly energy that drives

one to write books and drink gin and chase after girls’. He had a way with words until the very end. Sales of his books continue to grow around the world. But a Roald Dahl book wouldn’t be what we all remember without the iconic illustrations of Quentin Blake. Born in 1932 in London, Blake has always made his living as an illustrator, as well as teaching for over 20 years at the Royal College of Art. He has also collaborated with authors such as Russell Hoban, Joan Aiken and Michael Rosen. But it is his work for Roald Dahl’s books that is now the subject of a special collection of stamps launched by the Royal Mail. They celebrate the work of the author and illustrator, as well as the 30th anniversary of the BFG, and feature some of the most loved characters. Ophelia Dahl, daughter of Roald Dahl, said: “I’m so excited that Royal Mail has honoured my father with these stamps. My dad wrote thousands of letters home throughout his life and never dreamed that one day one of his own characters would grace a stamp. He’d be thrilled. This is an excellent way for us to kick off a year of celebrations to mark 30 years in print for The BFG and it’s great that the stamps include a collector’s set, devoted to The BFG and other characters from this books.” 9

The Pinnacle

Letting Company

THE LETTING SPECIALISTS - LET US LET FOR YOU

We are an established and independent Letting Agent and our reputation is built upon our experience and high level of service we provide

The Pinnacle Letting Company is an Independent Company, specialising in Residential Lettings only.

Pinnacle is based in Horsham town centre and the company rent out and/or manage all types of properties within Horsham and surrounding areas. Pinnacle Letting is in its 7th year, independently owned by Jill Wakeman and run by her and her team, all of whom have lived in Horsham for many years. Jill has an extensive knowledge of the property industry expanding over 25 years. She has a BTEC in Residential Lettings and Property Management and began her career working in Land and New Homes. She then moved into Estate Agency Sales and then finally into Residential Lettings. The reason she wanted to open her own Letting Agency is that through her experience she realised that many landlords and tenants were receiving a poor service and were not well informed or kept up to date with current legislation. Wendy - Lettings Manager has been with Pinnacle Letting for 3

years, bringing with her a wealth of sales and customer services experience. She has built up a fantastic rapport with all of the landlords and thoroughly enjoys her job coordinating the smooth running and management of our portfolio of properties. John - Property Maintenance Manager, liaising with Landlords, Tenants and Service Contractors dealing with everyday property maintenance. Leo has re-joined the company as a full time Lettings Negotiator and has successfully settled into this demanding role. The staff at Pinnacle Letting are friendly and welcoming and understand how important your property is, whether it is an investment property or a onetime family home. They recognise that most of their new business comes from

referral and recommendations and firmly believe that this is because they provide Landlords with an excellent customer service. They also know this could possibly be one of the most expensive purchases that you will ever make and they will be able to advise you on all aspects of lettings, particularly Lettings Regulation and Legislation. They will be able to offer advice on the cosmetic approach to property letting which may include decoration and/or maintenance. Pinnacle Letting has just finished 2 complete property refurbishments and they are currently in the process of another project. With this in mind the main aim of Pinnacle is to provide a first class service which reflects their mission statement of

A service you can rely on and people you can trust... The Pinnacle Letting Company invests in a program of ongoing training to maintain the highest professional standards to ensure a comprehensive level of service is provided to clients.

IF YOU ARE A LANDLORD LETTING FOR THE FIRST TIME, CONSIDERING A BUY TO LET INVESTMENT OR YOU HAVE A PORTFOLIO, CALL US TO DISCUSS WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU.

ABM also considers the best ways to take advantage of light and space in any home. They can install doors and windows in places that maximise natural light as well as the free flow of ventilation and ensure that properties are well insulated. Creating homes that are considerate to the environment is another of ABM’s priorities. At the client’s request, the company will use the most sustainable and renewable materials available, so together they can help reduce the impact on the environment. The company pays attention to detail, only uses the highest quality products in construction and knows what an important investment it can be for its clients. Which is why the company continues to build on its solid reputation as one of the premium building companies in the south.

in uncertain times

You couldn’t have helped but notice we are living in uncertain times, you only need to look at the sovereign debt crisis in Europe and the threat of recessions across many developed economies. Meanwhile, UK economic growth is sluggish and the Government is still trying to avoid a double dip recession and stimulate growth. Many people have been impacted by these events but are seldom mentioned. You may be one of these people. For those near to or already in retirement and looking to invest their savings for growth or to supplement their income, it’s a difficult time with challenging decisions to be made. Cash based deposits are offering woefully low returns, National Savings and Investment products are limited and the stock market has been volatile. Interest rates are at an all time low of 0.5% and the UK stock market has seen dramatic swings over the last 12 months. The FTSE has fallen from over 6000 to below 5000 and is now back at 5600 on January 16th – that’s a tremendous amount of change. Nobody can predict where the markets will go next. What is certain is that they are erratic and this can play havoc with the decisions you have to make. This continued uncertainty is worrying for investors, especially if you’re to protect and grow your retirement pot to help maintain your standard of living. With low interest rates expected to stay for the foreseeable future, and some commentators predicting

no significant change until 2014, and the continued roller coaster stock market it’s difficult to know where to invest for the future. Ask yourself this question, could I afford for my income to reduce or start using my savings capital to supplement my income in retirement? UNIT-LINKED GUARANTEES If the answer is no then you may want to consider unit-linked guarantees or variable annuities as they are sometimes called. These innovative investment solutions were first introduced to the UK about 5 years ago. They’ve been around for much longer in the USA and Japan where they are now a core part of retirement investing for those who are typically cautious investors. Unit-linked guarantees let you invest in a portfolio of assets but they limit some of the risk of investing in the stock market by providing protection in down-markets and the opportunity at the yearly reviews to lock-in investment gains in up-markets. They offer lifetime income guarantees and/ or capital guarantees typically between 8 and 20 years. With a guaranteed income that can go up but will never go down unless you take additional withdrawals. A guaranteed income in retirement can be very appealing as people are living longer than ever before and need to ensure that their capital doesn’t run out. Remember that investment returns may go down as well as up and that the capital guarantee

applies at the chosen term only. If you alter the term, you may not get back the amount you originally invested. The only circumstances in which the guarantee wouldn’t apply would be if the providing life assurance company were to fail or go into administration. SECURING YOUR FUTURE Unit linked guarantees are now coming of age as people start to appreciate their value and the security they offer. While they may not be suitable for everyone, they should at least be considered as part of an overall investment portfolio especially if you are looking to secure your income in retirement. FIXED TERM ANNUITIES Alternatively you may wish to consider a fixed term annuity. These products enable you to secure an income for a specific period with the option to exit and purchase an enhanced annuity should your health decline in the future. Fixed term annuities are suited to changing income needs and to those people who do not need to extract the maximum income from their pension fund on day one. Ultimately it is important explore all avenues and take advice if you are considering your retirement income options. BOOKS you should read this year

Afterwards by Rosamund Lupton Published by Pikatus Fans of Lupton’s debut novel, Sister, will have been eagerly awaiting her follow-up - Afterwards. It tells the tale of a mother who runs into a burning school to save her children and her ongoing battle to protect them. Lupton has an incredible skill for creating characters the reader can relate to and for exploring the ties that bind families. Afterwards is a guaranteed page turner.

Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James Published by Faber and Faber There probably aren’t many authors who could be trusted with writing a follow-up to Jane Austen’s beloved classic, Pride and Prejudice. But at 91 and with 15 previous books under her belt, P.D. James is well placed to attempt it. Set six years after the end of Pride and Prejudice and continuing to follow the Bennett sisters, the book combines Austen’s classic characters and location with James’ expertise in crime writing. Younger sister, Lydia, who brought scandal to Netherfield in Austen’s original work finds her husband dead. Who killed him?

The Diabolical Mr Tiddles by Tom McLaughlin Published by Simon and Schuster A delightfully written and illustrated debut picture book by Tom McLaughlin. Mr Tiddles, the eponymous feline has been on a crime spree, but with the best of intentions. And if the Queen can forgive him, then I’m sure we can too. There’s so much to see on every page, it will keep preschoolers entertained for ages. And you might find their elder siblings paying more attention at story time too.

Catherine Ross flicks through some must-read titles for 2012

Pantheon by Sam Bourne Published by HarperCollins (Due for release 16 February 2012) Fans of Sam Bourne won’t be disappointed by his new thriller. This time, the action is set during the Second World War and in Oxford and America. Our leading man, James Zennor, returns home to find his wife and son missing. After scouring the English countryside, he crosses the Atlantic where his search leads him to the heart of the American establishment. The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes Published by Jonathan Cape The 2011 Man Booker prize winner has received critical acclaim from all angles. Julian Barnes lost out on the prize on three previous occasions, but Sense of an Ending is widely hailed as one of the best books of last year and a must-read for 2012. The novel explores memory and how, as we grow up and grow older, our memory of what has gone before fades and is rewritten in our own minds. Barnes presents us with a group of friends who met at school and have grown to middle age. After tragedy strikes, people are forced to think again about what went before.

You Talkin’ To Me? by Sam Leith (non-fiction) Published by Profile Books Sam’s Leith factual discussion of the art of rhetoric makes an interesting read for anyone who wants to deliver gripping speeches or understand what makes oratory so persuasive. Leith dissects rhetoric from Aristotle, who laid out the main branches of rhetoric. He also looks at the likes of Cicero (who is thought to have used rhetoric for the first time), Churchill, who’s verbal skills didn’t arrive until the onset of the Second World War and many others right through to Obama, whose use of rhetoric helped him become the most powerful man in the world.

A bit about Catherine Ross Catherine has loved books ‘longer than she has been able to speak’. An avid reader 30 years later, she is just as likely to be reading The Gruffalo to her two young children as sharing the classics with her ten year old step daughter or grabbing five minutes with the latest Lionel Shriver. What you need to do Let your steak come down to room temperature. This will help ensure it is cooked evenly throughout. Begin with a hot pan, season with salt but save the pepper for later if you like it because it will burn. Put the steak on the pan and turn every 30 seconds. The heat will help form a nice brown crust and turning regularly will cook your steak evenly. For a rare steak, cook for 3 to 4 minutes For a medium steak, cook for 5 to 6 minutes For a well done steak, cook for 7 to 10 minutes If you have a digital temperature probe, you can take the internal temperature of the steak to find out when it’s done. For a rare steak, remove from the pan at 45°C For a medium steak, remove from the pan at 55°C For a well done steak, remove from the pan at 65°C Don’t eat it straight away. Your steak should rest for at least 5 minutes. This will allow all the fibres to relax and hold all the juices in, rather than pouring out on your plate.

Bearnaise sauce You will need 2 egg yolks 1 tablespoon of white wine vinegar 1 large pinch of chopped tarragon 2 tablespoons of cold water 125 ml of clarified butter Juice of half a lemon

What you need to do Combine the egg yolks, vinegar and water in a bowl over boiling water. Whisk continuously until light and fluffy. Remove from the heat and whisk in the butter slowly until everything is incorporated. Add the chopped tarragon, lemon juice and season with salt and pepper.

Peppercorn Sauce You will need 20g green peppercorns 1 tablespoon of chopped shallots 30 ml of Worcester Sauce 80 ml of double cream

What you need to do Crush the peppercorns and add to a pan with shallots and the Worcester Sauce. Reduce together to a syrup, then the double cream and reduce to thicken.

The perfect chips

Use Maris Piper potatoes, roughly cut. Steam or boil the chips until they are on the verge of crumbling apart. Remove from the steamer or pan and leave to dry out for about 20 minutes. Then fry at 180°C until golden.

A bit about steaks

Flavour and tenderness in a steak depends how much muscle is in the meat and how hard it works. The more the muscle is used, the more flavour it will develop but the less tender it will be, and vice versa - the less the muscle is used the more tender it will be. Take a fillet steak for example. It’s low in muscle, so lacks a lot of flavour but is very tender. A ribeye or sirloin, on the other hand, have the best of both – they are flavoursome and tender. If you’re unsure which steak has more muscle, look for the marbling of fat in the raw meat.

About David Craig Lewis “I love the buzz of working in a kitchen. I started while I was at university and it didn’t take long before I knew I wanted to cook. There was so much activity going on and I found myself wanting to learn about food and flavours, so I decided against pursuing a career in bioscience. I believe this is what I was meant to do.” Having gained experience working in kitchens across the country as a chef and for a prestigious catering company, David is now head chef at The Leconfield in Petworth. EDUCATION Evolution

Confidence, kindness and endless possibilities – James Hood learns about the real lessons taught in private education

The real purpose of education is to identify a pupil’s strengths, allowing them to excel

In Charles Dickins’ book, Hard Times, Mr Gradgrind states: “Now, what I want is, facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but facts. Facts alone are wanted in life.” It might be true that facts have shaped education for centuries. But are they the be-all and end-all for a student who wants to realise his or her full potential? Author Terry Deary, who has written 150 children’s books (of which he has sold 25 million copies) doesn’t think so. “When I was at school, it was clear I had an aptitude for writing. But I was a northern lad. We didn’t write! Instead I was taught Maths, Science, English etc. No one ever said to me ‘perhaps you should consider a career as an author’. The real purpose of education is to identify one’s strengths, allowing students to excel”, he said. It’s a view that is shared by Graeme Owton, headmaster at Handcross Park School in Sussex, who believes education is about more than just science labs and subtractions. “Of course, we strive for academic excellence. But we do so without simply driving facts into pupils. They need more than a teacher who stands at the front and talks at them if they are going to reach their full potential”, he said. “Personal development doesn’t have to be limited to the classroom and a set curriculum. It can extend to personal attributes, confidence and kindness – which are fundamental to creating happy and, ultimately, successful young people”. And it is the time and dedication to each pupil that is arguably the single biggest benefit of an independent school. “Smaller classrooms mean we can identify the skills that individual pupils have. That might be in the classroom, on a sports pitch, playing music or at home. Wherever they show an aptitude, we are able to dedicate time to not only acknowledging it, but nurturing it”, Graeme added. For Joanne Lloyd, it was less about education and more about choice and opportunity that led her to put her son in an independent school. “If it’s an education you’re looking for, then any school in this country can provide it. What appealed to us about an independent school were the options available, the extra curricular activities and the attention that is paid to helping each pupil find where their strengths lie. My son has so many options. That can only

be a good thing and will make his chances of realising his potential that much greater.” But it’s not just smaller classrooms that make an independent school an attractive option for parents. The schools are also free to set their own syllabus, giving them greater flexibility when it comes to teaching what really matters – crucial in an ever-changing world. Mr Owton added: “We, as a society, are in danger of teaching the same curriculum time and again. But the world is changing and we need to adapt education as a result. At our school, for example, we teach Spanish to pupils from age three, because it is the second most spoken language in the world. Fortunately, we have the freedom, and our teachers have the time, to prepare a curriculum that is tailored to the world outside, to what is current and what will be of use to our pupils”. It is a more holistic approach to schooling; one that encompasses all elements of a child’s growth and development, rather than simply their ability to remember facts. Although learning about World War 1 is important, so too is learning respect for others, good manners and good sportsmanship – all of which prove essential for success when the final school bell rings and it’s out into the big wide world. David Sinclair is the headmaster at Sompting Abbotts independent school, near Steyning. His school focuses on the development of the pupil as a whole. He said: “We want pupils to be wellmannered, caring, with a good work ethic. And to offer them a wide range of activities in sport, music, art and drama, hence they will have the confidence to face the challenges of modern day life.” There is probably no better investment in a child’s future than in their education. But as well as academia and facts, that should also incorporate their personal development. Mr Owton added: “This isn’t only about striving for A grades – schools can never guarantee those. It’s about helping and guiding young people to reach their full potential.” Which is what is so great about a private school – because although Maths and Science are useful, perhaps the greatest lesson of all is that anything is possible.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A PRIVATE SCHOOL? It’s one of the biggest decisions you will make as a parent but if it’s your first time it’s not always easy to spot a good school. Pennthorpe’s deputy head tells us it’s more about the kids than the curriculum If you’ve just started thinking about selecting an independent school for your first born, or any of your children, you’ll know it can be a daunting prospect – one of the biggest decisions you can make as a parent. But it’s an investment worth making. It will after all, and as Mr Owton puts it in the preceding article, 'help your child reach their full potential’. If it’s your first time choosing a school, it’s not always clear what you should be looking for. Is it the classroom sizes? Is it the playground or outside space? Is it a healthy lunch menu? Well, according to James Oakden, deputy headmaster at Pennthorpe School in Rudgwick, it’s all about the pupils. “When you look around a school as a visitor, you should be able to tell how good it is by observing the children. What you’re looking for is confidence, manners and children who get involved in the class. That, in turn,

gives you an idea of the quality of the teaching”, Mr Oakden told The Resident. “And they should be happy and polite pupils too. At Pennthorpe for example, our pupils give tours to visiting parents. And we try to be as creative as possible – putting the ‘fun’ in fundamentals.” It’s also down to opportunity as well for Mr Oakden, who believes that the more choice your child will have, the better the education. “Look out for ‘all-roundness’. Do the children have the chance to excel in various areas? Whether it’s in maths, languages, sport or music, for example. Results are very important obviously. Parents want their children to be educated. But it’s a tell tale sign that the school is doing a good job if pupils are not only bright, but friendly and prepared for the world outside when they eventually move on.” education

SOMPTING ABBOT TS PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Renowned for its traditional values and high academic achievements Sompting Abbotts is a well established family run school. The school is set in 30 acres of playing fields, gardens and woodland which enables children the freedom to play in an open and secure environment. A stimulating and well rounded curriculum ensures pupils develop the essential qualities of self confidence and independence. The changes in Early Years education provides an exciting learning platform for young pupils. Following a programme of self-directed activities, children can develop their skills in a vibrant and meaningful curriculum which is measured against a framework of learning goals. One of the major advantages of a private school, beyond the personal attention brought about by smaller class sizes, is that it is independent and so can select subjects, levels and activities not commonly available. The school can therefore select initiatives from the National Curriculum and best practice which can be adapted to the needs of the pupils. In aiming to achieve the school motto, Intus Recte, the physical, emotional, social as well as intellectual wellbeing of every child is promoted through differentiated learning of a cross curricular learning programme, resulting in a happy, well educated young individual.

We warmly invite parents to make an appointment to view the school. Telephone 01903 235 960 ext. 24 Mobile 07710 008 347

Realising your full potential Hurstpierpoint College is an independent school offering outstanding day and boarding education for boys and girls aged four to 18 years. Set in Sussex countryside just north of the Downs, its 140 campus provides superb academic, sporting and cultural facilities. The core belief at Hurst is that education is all about pupils’ pursuit and achievement of personal bests - academic, extra-curricular and in their relationships with others. Through this Hurst pupils, properly guided and supported by the school, gain not only the best grades possible but also develop vital life skills, qualities and values. In practice, this means that every child should have genuine access to all the opportunities at Hurst, whether sporting, creative, activity or community related. Every child has the chance to be in a team, properly coached, and with a good fixture card. The Senior School Choir of some 140 pupils. although not all future opera stars, greatly enjoy their music, learning new skills and developing an interest which will be stay with them for life. Over 20 different theatrical productions a year give every child the invaluable experience of being part of a cast or backstage team, experiencing all that brings. Every pupil in Year 10 tackles the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award; through this experience they will develop other qualities and skills of immense value today and invaluable in later life. Alongside this commitment to inclusion and real engagement, Hurst seeks to achieve true excellence. For instance, this year the Chamber

Choir of 25 has sung at, amongst other venues, Winchester Cathedral, a large academic cohort are heading off to Oxford and other first rate universities, athletes have competed, not just regionally but also nationally (including a gold medallist at the Independent Schools Ski championships), the outstanding CCF corps numbers over 250, a Young Enterprise team swept the prizes locally and 20 Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award winners are to collect their awards this year at Buckingham Palace. At the heart of everything that Hurst does is a belief that the pupils’ individual interests and development must come first and that this is more important than any trophy, newspaper headline or public plaudit for the College. Indeed, as a school, Hurst consciously does not place great value on garnering public tributes, preferring that parents and pupils act as its ambassadors. In short, Hurst wants pupils to leave here aged 18 with the best grades that they can achieve, with a good sense of who they are and what they want from life together with the qualities, skills and values to achieve their goals. It is hoped that they will be decent people who will give to the lives of others. This is what drives education at Hurst and although it may not always seem particularly glamorous or sensational , it is, in Headmaster Tim Manly’s view, what every school should be about. To find out what Hurstpierpoint College can offer your child, we invite you to arrange a personal family visit or to attend our forthcoming Spring Open Mornings on 10 March and 12 May.

EDUCATION AND PREPARATION A grades are the target, but at Handcross Park School, kindness and confidence are the real measure of success

In the words of Graeme Owton, the headmaster at Handcross Park School, pupils usually end the year “happy… and tired!” That’s probably because education and learning at the independent school is about much more than the times table and Bunsen Burners (although thankfully both are still part of the syllabus). Rather, time is spent nurturing its young students into not only bright young things, but also well-rounded, active and confident individuals. And the emphasis really is on the ‘individual’ at the school. Smaller classrooms mean teachers have the time and energy to devote to

identifying and nurturing each pupil’s strengths – which leads to successful, happy young people, who can excel in the areas in which they show an aptitude or talent. Mr Owton also said: “I believe we have a responsibility to develop our pupils so that they are not only well-educated, but so they can face the world with confidence when they leave. We underpin everything with a few carefully selected philosophies, the main one being kindness. It is fundamental to creating happy and successful people. Obviously, learning is structured around the core, traditional subjects. We strive for academic excellence, but achieve that by doing more than simply driving facts into pupils. We also acknowledge that the world is changing, which is why we place a significant emphasis on languages as well as what’s going on outside the grounds and gates here.” The school has 230 pupils, they range from

nursery to year eight and both full or weekly boarding facilities are available. There are 24-hour house parents and a nurse on-site. Pupils’ learning is mainly classroom based up until Year 4, before they move into Year 5 and attend lessons taught by specialist subject teachers. Subjects include the staples such as maths, English and science, as well as modern languages, music and PE. Sport and Music are considered to be important to pupil development; four afternoons a week are dedicated to sport and the school runs four successful choirs and an orchestra. The range of activities they can participate in is broad. Everything from rugby and hockey to swimming, dance, drama and art club is an option. “We want children at the school to be productive”, Mr Owton added. “The more choice they have, the more likely they are to find a path that suits them. ‘Opportunity’ is what is so great about our school.” At Handcross Park School, learning is about preparation as well as education. The school’s holistic approach to developing its pupils means they will do more than simply gain good grades. They will be given the opportunity and encouragement to reach their full potential – and there really is no greater gift you can give your child.

I WANT TO BE A PART OF IT Fifth Avenue is fabulous but anyone who’s anyone is migrating outwards into the city’s up and coming neighbourhoods. James Hood skips the Empire State Building and hails a yellow cab to the new New York

O

n a first or even second visit to New York you’d be forgiven for spending most of your time seeing the sights or looking up. For many of us, taking an ‘elevator’ to the 50th floor of a building is quite the novelty (unless you’re a Canary Wharf commuter) – and to be fair it’s usually where the best hotel rooms can be found. But there is much more to see and do at ground level in the city these days, and it has nothing to do with Grand Central Station or the Statue of Liberty. While much of the world has spent the last decade associating the city with September 11, New Yorkers themselves have been steadfast in their resolve to ensure its business as usual, which has helped maintain its place as one of the best cities on the planet (if not THE best). But before the attack on the Twin Towers, New York was already becoming safer. Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s sheriff-style zero tolerance crack down on crime chased the undesirables out of many of Manhattan’s neighbourhoods, making room for the likes of Michelin starred chefs and Stella McCartney to move in. These days it is not just Saks, the Four Seasons or Midtown restaurants that are attracting people with money to spend. Locals (and any tourists in the know) are gracing the Lower East Side with their presence, where a formerly arty and bohemian crowd (as well as an Irish contingent) has paved the way for a host of creative talent to set up shop. Although a place to steer clear from a decade ago, it has become gentrified, with a hip infusion, thanks to fresh art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. In the Meatpacking district, traditionally a neighbourhood made up of meat-importing warehouses, you will find more restaurants opened by adventurous and world-class chefs taking advantage of the cheaper rent and adding to the city’s thriving collection of independent venues, as well as clubs where only the bold and the beautiful will gain admission. Proprietors have turned the less than

elegant exteriors to their advantage, creating industrial-inspired spaces that look the part on the inside. The neighbourhood is home to the not-so-new Pastise, which has retained its crown as one of New York’s restaurants to beat when it comes to attracting the cool crowd since opening in 1999. Eat there (assuming you can get a reservation) and you could be just a table or two away from the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker. But, do bear in mind that no New Yorker would ever admit to caring, so no photos please. If you’re in this neck of the woods a refreshment break at the Hotel Gansevoort is highly recommended. It has a bar with panoramic views where you can watch the sunset over the Hudson River. Another resourceful adaptation of the area’s industrial roots is a newly landscaped, 20-block railway track called the Highline - ideal for walking off your French brasserie brunch. Although Fifth Avenue remains one of the best shopping areas in the world, Soho has become a haven for those looking for a mixture of big name designers and small independent boutiques. Make the short journey and you’ll find vintage dress shops beside the big boys, including Prada, Chanel and John Varvatos. It’s also a rare place to find newer designers such as Kate Spade, who can showcase their talents to those attracted by American fashion veterans like Mr Ralph Lauren. If you’re more interested in fresh food than fashion, head to Union Square on a Saturday where New Yorkers go for the weekly farmer’s market. It’s also just a stone’s throw from Gramercy (another neighbourhood to explore) where you can dine at the world famous Gramercy Tavern – consistently named as one of New York’s top ten. Needless to say, in New York there are sights that simply must be seen. But once you’ve checked them off your list, grab a yellow cab and take a bigger bite of the apple. Because get out in the different neighbourhoods and wander around a bit and you will find a culture like nowhere else in the world. The real New York – the New Yorker’s New York. travel

THE NEW YORKER’S NEW YORK FOR BRUNCH DBGB Kitchen and Bar Lower East Side on Bowery www.danielnyc.com Paying tribute to the neighbourhood’s history as a supplier to the restaurant industry, the DBGB Kitchen and Bar is stacked high with its own wines and kitchen equipment and has a partially open kitchen. A fantastic selection of brunch beers, burgers and a menu that combines a French brasserie style with American classics. FOR DINNER The Stanton Social Lower East Side on Stanton www.thestantonsocial.com With a menu made up mostly of sharing plates inspired by a multitude of different nationalities and cuisines, this restaurant has plenty of substance as well as style. And speaking of which, it’s one of the coolest places aesthetically in the city. Combining comfort, interesting style features such as a 30 ft glowing wall displaying over 2,000 bottles of wine in a herringbone pattern and all-important low lighting – it’s a must. FOR VIEWS AND DRINKS The Penninsula Midtown at Fifth Avenue and 55th Street www.peninsula.com Quite simply one of the city’s best hotels. The Penninsula is a 5th Avenue landmark and marries comfort with contemporary class. If you can’t stay there, visit one of its bars for a drink. The Salon de Ning has an outdoor patio with great views that is overlooked by many of the surrounding skyscrapers, allowing you to savour every moment of being in the city. FOR SLEEPING The Shoreham Midtown www.shorehamhotel.com Despite being in the city that never sleeps, you may want to take the weight off your feet for a while. The Shoreham Hotel is ultra modern, and slap bang in the centre of the action, with easy access to Fifth Avenue and a short walk to Times Square if you haven’t been before. FOR A PIT STOP The Loeb Boathouse Central Park, Northeastern tip of the lake www.thecentralparkboathouse.com In winter there’s a roaring fire, in the summer there’s a deck and outside seating. But whenever you go to New York, you’ll thank us for recommending a break from your walk through Central Park at this relaxed restaurant and bar. FOR CULTURE The Guggenheim Upper East Side, 5th Avenue www.guggenheim.org The building alone is one of the most significant architectural icons of the past century. And the art it houses, ranging from Impressionist to Contemporary, is equally as important. The Guggenheim’s founders were devoted to the arts and there you can view permanent exhibitions as well as temporary, groundbreaking pieces and installations. FOR COCKTAILS The Flatiron Lounge The Flatiron District West 19th Street www.flatironlounge.com Renowned cocktail stylist Julie Reiner created an original menu at this art-deco inspired lounge. With a 30 year-old mahogany bar, stained glass lights and jazz music, you can enjoy your tailormade cocktail (or plenty of other staples) while being transported to an era gone by.

ou might think the kitchen is the most important room in the home, but it is the bedroom in which we spend the entire night and where we relax after spending a hard day at work. Your bedroom should be your personal sanctuary, somewhere to relax and express your feelings. Therefore careful thought needs to be given to how we decorate the room and what we furnish it with. It’s also a great opportunity to indulge our decorative whims. The importance of colour should not be overlooked. I recommend colours to be soothing, romantic, and be acceptable to whoever is sharing the room with you. If you use a scheme that is monochromatic – meaning things of a similar colour, this can be incredibly restful. For example, if you are planning to paint the walls of your bedroom cream, then consider using a cream-based wallpaper as a feature behind the bed. The bed linen can also be a cream or gold, with textured cushions in the same shades. I have used red in a similar scheme to add an accent colour. The red was used in a piece of art over the bed, and in a trailing ivy design on the gold silk roman blinds. This has created a beautiful romantic and elegant bedroom. The bed is the centrepiece of the bedroom. If your bed looks beautiful, then your room will too. Don’t forget the bedding. Beautiful sheets and plumped up pillows will look and feel wonderful. Plenty of cushions create a sense of real luxury and you should try different textures for the best effect – faux fur, suede, silk and many more. If your room is big enough then you might consider a four-poster bed. But bear in mind the size of your room. I have often walked into a bedroom with a fourposter bed in it and found that the bed takes up all the room and allows for nothing else, it is just too overpowering – what a waste. Needless to say, bright lights can detract from any ambience you have created in your bedroom. Soft lighting on the other hand will

simply enhance the mood and comfort. Think about task lighting for reading in bed. And for a lovely romantic evening or special occasion, nothing is better than the warm glow of candles and the aroma of essential oils. If you would prefer not to have candles in the bedroom, then use low wattage bulbs in the bedside lights. For some colour, think about incorporating it sparingly. If you were decorating the dining room you would think of pinks and reds, but do you particularly want these colours for your bedroom? Many people are concerned about colour in the bedroom and want something a little more neutral, in this case look at soft neutrals for the walls, and add a dash of red or bright blue in a throw or cushion or perhaps in the candles. Layers of gold or chocolate can look amazing and bring the room to life. I recently created a bedroom for a client using warm creams as the predominant colour, with a beautiful cream and gold feature wallpaper behind the bed. We then used purple in the curtains, cushions and bed throw for colour. It looked inviting and elegant. Incidentally, as it’s February, purple is the colour for passion. Don’t forget that bedroom curtains can make or break your room. They must be used as an essential part of your scheme. First look at what you are trying to create. Do you want a traditional or contemporary room? Have you gone for a themed room? If you have opted for a contemporary scheme then look at blinds or eyelet curtains. Traditional schemes will need rich fabrics with beautiful tiebacks. I find interlining curtains not only makes them more luxurious, but will also keep much of the light out, rather than going for the option of total blackout lining. And for your floor, I would always recommend opting for carpet. It brings warmth and comfort to a bedroom. It feels wonderful on a cold winter morning to get out of bed and feel the warmth of a carpet underfoot. If you do decide on hard or wooden flooring, then consider putting rugs on the floor. It will add warmth to the room and can mean that you get to play with that all-important colour scheme.

BEYOND CHONDROITIN AND GLUCOSAMINE

We all want to be as supple and flexible as we can be. Cortaflex® nutritional supplement supports the health of every joint in the body. It provides nutrients for lubrication and flexibility of movement, giving more comfort to your joints. Cortaflex® has been formulated around the concept that smaller molecules are more likely to be absorbed than larger ones. Therefore, Cortaflex® contains the smaller key active isolates of Chondroitin and Glucosamine Glutamine, Glucuronic Acid, Glutamic Acid, Proline, and Glycine – not to be confused with the much larger Chondroitin and Glucosamine molecules. For a fast and effective joint supplement, take Cortaflex® every day. Used by athletes, professional sports players and Premier League footballer players. enovations, refurbishments and redecorating can be chaotic to say the least. Take on the three projects at the same time and for most normal people, it’s a recipe for disaster and the cause of many a sleepless night. Cue Arior design. The company, which consists of a qualified architect and two interior design specialists, was established to give clients who are looking to make improvements to their home a more complete, stress-free package that takes care of all elements. Together, Jim, Catherine and Emma can work on home improvements no matter how large or small. From the overhaul of an entire country mansion to the decorating of one small room, the threesome is equipped to handle it all – taking complete control of a redesign or redecorating project on behalf of anyone who shudders at the thought. If you were unsure about letting

someone loose on your lounge, you needn’t be. Although there may be a perception that an interior designer will transform your home into a contemporary minimalist shadow of its former self, the reality is quite the opposite says interior designer, Catherine Smith. “We really listen to what clients want. We get to know them really well. Some of our clients are very involved in the entire process and want to see every nut and bolt, and that’s completely fine. We are all working to the same goal.” Using a company that incorporates both architecture and interior design (which, incidentally, is where Arior gets its name from) can save time and money. “It pays to look at, and manage, the project as a whole”, according to the company’s architect, Jim Bennett. “If you integrate the two elements you eliminate the hassle of u homes & interiors

redesigning parts of a project further down the line because you have the input of both an architect and a designer at the planning stage. That in itself saves people a lot of money and time. It also means clients only have one port of call instead of dealing with a few different people who might not communicate with each other until something goes wrong. Arior can take care of the plans, the tiles on the wall and everything in between.” And it’s not just because the three codirectors are experts in their fields that make them an effective team – they get on well too. Catherine, Jim and Emma met years ago at an architects firm in Brighton before deciding to team up for their own venture. Emma Steed told The Resident: “We were working for a much large company, and worked so well together we decided to set up on our own. I love coming to work with Catherine and Jim. Plus we felt we could offer a superior, more personal and focused service. Often with big firms the client speaks to a different person for a cost, then someone else for their brief and there’s a different person who actually carries out the work. With Arior, we see projects through ourselves from start to finish”.

Photographs by Amy Bartlam

Work can be carried out on any type of home too. Arior has a portfolio of past projects, which includes Grade II listed buildings, Regency or period places, converted barns as well as new-builds. They are also currently working on properties in Battersea and there’s a hotel in the pipeline. But regardless of the type of home they are working on, it is the relationship with their clients for which these three get out of bed in the mornings. “The reason I do this job is for the client relationship. We work really hard to make sure people love their home when we have finished. We always have an honest and open relationship. We understand that people hire us for a reason, and it’s not to just say yes sir, no sir. They want our opinions, it’s a collaborative process”. Catherine added: “It’s all about working together as a team with the three of us and the client. It’s a great feeling when you finish and you have transformed someone’s home. We love it when they love it.”

SNOW DROPS, DAFFODILS AND HADDOCKS Angus White from Architectural Plants in Nuthurst describes some very different tell-tale signs that spring is on the way

In the world of gardening the harbingers of spring are normally Snow Drops, Daffs and winter flowering cherries but in our strange world of hardy exotics at Architectural Plants, they’re more likely to be Haddocks, Culms and Bananas. Haddocks are the enormous yellow fishlike (smoked haddock, obviously) excrescences that become the flowers of the palm trees (Trachycarpus fortunei) we grow outside. Although they may not be in their full glory until May, in a mild winter they will start making their presence felt as early as February - the tips of the great fishy things poking their noses out of their hairy trunks early in the season. Culms are the name given to the shoots of bamboo plants - a familiar sight around here. We always enjoy looking for the earliest signs of life from our biggest and most beautiful of the East Asian Bamboos. This is the Edible Bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) known in Japan as Moso and why it produces its new shoots up to three months earlier than any of the other bamboos is a mystery. Maybe it’s because they get bigger than the others and so they have to start earlier. But a surprising and strange site they make in early March forcing themselves out of the ground like little rocket propelled thermonuclear devices.

by Christmas we’ve chopped off the leaves and wrapped a bit of straw round the trunk to preserve it. All other known banana plants would not tolerate a Sussex winter but this Japanese one’s key to survival is the remarkably low ambient temperature required to get it growing - little more than 6°C. Rather than rotting away like any other self respecting banana, this one just carries on growing and so after a mild winter, by the time we unwrap the straw in late February, one often finds a foot or more of new growth. Another reminder, at last, that spring is sprung. It’s significant that all three of these plants come from the east - either China or Japan. This part of the world has a more continental climate than ours, with more clearly defined seasons. Therefore, to these orientals, rising temperatures mean a trend that will continue but of course in our treacherous climate, how wrong they are. Many a hardy banana has produced a new leaf just to have it destroyed by a couple of nights of hard frost. If you’re familiar with the latin names of plants, think of all those with ‘japonica’ (comes from Japan) as their specific name. Pieris japonica, Euonymous japonica, Aucuba japonica - all the plants that come out early in the spring and all the ones to have their tips burnt when we have a late frost. Same thing really.

The Banana-That-Thrives-in-Sussex is the weirdest of the lot. Its Latin name is Musa basjoo and it comes from southern Japan. As with any banana plant, the leaves will tolerate only a touch of frost and so in our chilly frost pocket near Horsham,

A West Sussex company is going global with tree houses you’ve only dreamt of. Ideal for playtime or quiet time, these are not just for kids anymore Have you ever dreamt of having your very own sanctuary, tucked away in your garden, where you can get some much-needed peace? Perhaps you would like the kids to have somewhere outside to save the mess in your home, or a den for the teenagers to hang out with their friends. Well, your dream could be a reality, courtesy of a company that designs and builds exceptionally great tree houses. If you thought they were just for kids, think again. Although Cheeky Monkey Tree Houses can include zip wires, swinging ropes, rope bridges, secret hatches and climbing walls, there are also options for more serene activities – including hammocks and swinging chairs. Whether it’s for the kids to swing like Tarzan or for one of the grown-ups to relax with a glass of wine, it is money well spent. The company, which now creates tree houses around the world, was founded by Mark Pollecutt. He built his first tree house for his two sons back in the 90s, and loved it so much he made it his full time job. So special is his work that the business has gone from strength to strength and today, Mark and his team build houses in the UK and countries such as France, Greece and Dubai. He said: “If you can imagine it, we can build it. For many people, they want to make use of extra space they have outside, or somewhere to relax, and many people want to relive their childhood and give their own kids a tree house that they have only dreamt about.”

The tree houses can be as individual as you like. Each one is unique because Mark and his team take a brief about what their clients are looking for and then draw unique 3D plans which show what it will look like. “Anything goes”, said Mark. “Our tree houses are truly bespoke and nothing is out of the question. We want people to have their fantasy house. That could include feeling like it’s in the middle of the jungle, on a pirate ship or simply a nice and natural place to fall asleep.” Andrew Delaney is in charge of logistics and has seen a large increase in foreign builds over the last two years – to such a degree that the company has opened an office in Connecticut in the United States. He said: “There seems to be no limits to where the company can go. Although we are based in West Sussex, we can build anywhere. The workshop is only a small part of the operation, as over 90% of our tree houses are built onsite. So we are more flexible and mobile than people think.” Naturally, Cheeky Monkey Tree Houses knows the importance of safety, which is their priority. All members of the building team are extremely skilled craftsmen, who pay attention to detail. The houses can be built around a tree or self-supporting. Because Cheeky Monkey Tree Houses are built to such a high standard they will last a lifetime – which means when the little ones have flown the nest, you can reclaim it as your own special space.

Having crooked teeth can be embarrassing, even debilitating. As an adult, you may think it’s too late to correct your smile, but it’s not. New advanced adult orthodontic dental technology now offers an opportunity to everyone to have their natural teeth realigned with the minimum of fuss, whatever age they might be. Up until a decade or so ago, the British were renowned worldwide for their lack of orthodontic care. For us culturally, it was not necessarily an embarrassment to have large gaps, protruding or erupting teeth, or a row of crooked teeth – just unfortunate. It was the Americans who had ‘perfect teeth’ and brilliant white smiles – not the British. However celebrity culture has shown us what can be achieved; and our desire to have a healthy and attractive smile has changed dramatically over the last decade. Once considered unfortunate, crooked or erupting teeth have become an embarrassment and an issue for many - and one which potentially interferes with lifestyle and career choices. So what can be achieved today and is it affordable? More and more adults are looking at cosmetic solutions to improve their smile: from tooth whitening, veneers and now a growing popularity in adult braces. We are catching up with the Americans and we want to have a perfect smile too.

Before

We spoke to Dental Surgeon Dr Vatsal Amin at The Carfax Dental Practice to find out about what new treatments are available today. Dr Amin is a private dentist and Principal at the practice, with a special interest in cosmetic dentistry. Dr Amin says: “As a cosmetic dentist with more than 20 years experience, the new ‘six month smile’ treatment is one of the most exciting new advancements in dentistry today. It allows us to treat adults with crooked or displaced teeth and correct their smile quickly and effectively. It is one of most rewarding and life-changing treatments I can offer a patient who is so self conscious of their teeth, they might otherwise spend a lifetime trying to hide their smile. It’s not uncommon for patients who feel debilitated by their smile to use methods of disguise to distract from their mouth and teeth. It could be they choose to wear a hat, hide behind glasses or a hair style. Facial piercings are also common in younger patients.” Patient Brendan Dooling hated the gap he had between his front teeth and so

After

looked into options to correct it. “I wasn’t really a good candidate for traditional orthodontics and at 19 already, I didn’t want to wear metal braces, just close the gap. The six month smile treatment was the best option. People didn’t even notice I was wearing a brace, I would have to lift my lip to show them and treatment was finished in just 4 and a half months. It was quick, fast and painless”. The treatment involves an initial casting of your teeth, from which a clear brace is made specifically for the individual. “The brace is fixed for the duration of the treatment and is almost invisible”, says Dr Amin, “which is much more acceptable to adults. We can show you pictures of how a clear brace looks on adults, so you can see for yourself how unobtrusive it is.” “One of the main differences between traditional orthodontics and ‘the six month smile’ technique”, says Dr Amin, “ is that we are cosmetically adjusting the shape and appearance of the natural adult teeth, without aligning the bite which can otherwise take years to achieve. Most adult patients do not want to wear metal braces for 2 years or more - resulting in many people to believe they have missed the boat and there is nothing that can be done, or the only other alternative is expensive veneers. That used to be the main option, but with the new ‘six month smile’ treatment your natural teeth can normally be realigned with monthly adjustments within a window of 4-9 months, with an average of just 6 months. The results can be very dramatic, and in some cases the orthodontic treatment not only corrects the teeth, but also softens the face if teeth have been causing the mouth to slightly distort to accommodate protruding teeth.”

Quality care in a relaxed atmosphere *£250 per month 12 months interest free.

Debra Freidhaber was 50 when she decided to have her teeth corrected. “At my stage of life, I didn’t want to wear conventional braces, I just wanted straight teeth”, says Debra. All her life she had been self conscious about very crooked teeth on her left side. “I didn’t want to open my mouth and would hide my teeth when facilitating meetings and talking to parents.” In Debra’s case it took just 5 and a half months to realign her crooked teeth and she feels confident about smiling openly again. “I’m now proud of my smile, for 50 years no one ever commented on my teeth, but I get compliments now. It’s like a gift.”

WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP?

The first step is an initial consultation to establish if you are a suitable candidate for ‘six month smiles’. “Most adults are suitable for the treatment”, says Dr Amin, “At the end of the consultation we fully explain the options to you and the costs involved. It is then up to the patient to decide if and when they would like to go ahead.” More detailed information is available on the website www.carfaxdental.com To have one arch corrected costs £2,300, to have both arches corrected costs £3,000. 0% interest finance is available over a 12 month period, please ask for details. An initial ‘six month smile consultation’ booked before the end of February 2012 is free of charge. ANDTHEBOYS Editor James Hood takes on the tough task of being pampered in the name of research, and discovers that a holistic beauty treatment really does go further than skin deep

This June, high-end designers, Savile Row tailors and the best from British high street fashion stores will team up for a three-day menswear marathon in London. The event has been launched by the British Fashion Council and kicks off the Men’s Fashion Week calendar, ahead of the more recognised events in Milan and Paris. Men’s Fashion Week!? When did all this start? You may wonder. Men don’t care for fashion do they? They’re happy with a pair of cords and an oxford shirt right? Wrong. How us men look these days is big, no - make that massive business. You only have to wander down a street these days and play a game of ‘spot the pocket square, blazer or pointed Oliver Sweeney brogue’ to know that increasingly, we are not prepared to settle for second place in the fashion stakes.

about helped Darcie to tailor the treatment to me (and my pasty, blotchy, vitamin-deficient and sunstarved face - at the time).

A good dress sense is one thing, but the trend in boys caring about their appearance extends to beauty as well. According to a survey carried out by Superdrug last year, men spend around 83 minutes a day on personal grooming compared with women who can get their look perfected in just 79 minutes. Now, this to be fair could be down to the fact that the girls have had more practice and that they have managed to get any moisturising, plucking and curling regime down to a fine art. But something tells me it’s actually just because us boys are becoming more vain by the day. There were more staggering stats to come from the 3,000-person survey. Apparently men spend just 19p less each month than the ladies on grooming products and rack up a bill of around £300 a year on lots of lovely age-defying, toning, lifting and revitalising products to sit next to the Gillette in the bathroom cabinet. Naturally, this shift is no news to me. As the editor of such an exquisite publication like The Resident Magazine, I know my Mulberry from my Matalan. But I am not completely au fait with beauty salons. In the name of research (that old chestnut), I went to Skincare Essentials to find out more and be pampered to within an inch of my life. The salon is in Ringmer, near Lewis in East Sussex and Owner Darcie Carrington offers holistic treatments that help clients glow from the inside and out. She said: “Skincare Essentials came about over 12 years ago, because I couldn’t find anything out there that matched that vision - a passion for delivering truly gorgeous skin and that inner glow. Quite simply I love what I do and it shows.”

The treatment consists of several elements. A soothing cleansing cream is placed on the face. Then a wand (or lonzyme machine if you will) emits tiny electrical currents that literally pushes vitamin A and C deep into the skin – more than 400 times deeper than using your hands (particularly when that is usually applied while trying to put on a tie, eat my cereal and pack my laptop before I dart out the door). Then a thick, deep cleansing and softening ‘alginate’ mask is placed over the face completely, including the mouth (stay calm and breathe through your nose). Darcie uses a roller over it that literally irons out the wrinkles. But the topical treatments are just one part of what the skin specialist does. Equally important is the focus the mind, spirit and energy. The room is pink, which as Darcie explains reflects the unconditional love she likes to surround herself with, and positive energy is nurtured and encouraged, while negative energy is banished, during part of the treatment at which point the therapist balances your Chakras. And all the while Darcie will subtly ask you questions that help her to determine areas that can be worked on. You leave glowing on the inside as well as the outside, feeling confident enough to take on the world – or even go on a hot date.

It’s a feeling you get from the moment you walk in. Darcie herself is a calming force. Her energy radiates kindness and love and you instantly feel welcome in her space. Now, you might be thinking what’s he on about and what did she put in the (lemon and lime infused) water? But you have to experience it to believe it. The session (I was booked in for the Environ Active treatment) began with an in-depth consultation with Darcie. That included more than just a survey of the dryness of my skin (I need to drink more water) but delved deeper into the reason for my visit, any emotional areas of concern and details of my lifestyle. Everything we talked

Then, it’s up onto the table. Now, if you’ve never done this before – allow me to fill you in on a couple of things so you can pretend that you have. Your therapist will let you know how much or how little of your clothing you can take off, and it depends on the treatment. Usually your shirt and shoes will suffice. At Skincare Essentials, Darcie warms up a water-filled blanket for you to lie on. And I unashamedly admit, I could have laid down and slept on it for a hundred million years. But that’s just the beginning, and only to help you get comfortable and relaxed. The real purpose of the treatment is to get about the business of making you look and feel transformed!

It’s hard to tell how we evolved into men who enjoy lying on a warm, soft towel in our boxer shorts while someone gently sprays steam across our delicately (and always protected from UV rays) skin to open our pores. Then cleanse it and massage a thick claylike cream into it until we look like Jim Carey in The Mask. But I would hazard a guess that at some point, the girls let the cat out of the bag that it makes you look and feel absolutely fantastic. Skincare Essentials is passionate about bringing the best out of people, allowing the light to shine from within - timeless inner beauty that then radiates outwards. Working with many holistic approaches to encapsulate the whole person, your visit is tailored to suit your concerns as they happen. Whether you book in for a specific treatment or just book the time you wish, you have the therapist’s 100% commitment and attention to your needs. HEARING SPECIALIST Jonathan Ormerod

With more than two decades in the hearing aid industry and his own manufacturing company supplying earpieces for TV presenters and sports personalities, Jonathan Ormerod is well equipped to help you hear better. His latest project – ‘life changing’ hearing aids - that now come with HD sound quality When it comes to your hearing, you want to know you are using a specialist you can trust. Someone with an abundance of knowledge and experience, who knows the profession and the equipment that will help you hear more clearly. Jonathan Ormerod runs the Horsham Hearing Centre and has more than 20 years’ experience as an audiologist. He is at the forefront of his industry, using the latest technology to improve people’s lives through better hearing. His family background set him on this path and he also worked for nearly ten years for the division of Siemens that develops and manufactures hearing aids.

telling him to come into the pits during a Formula One race, or for Christine Bleakley, the new presenter of Dancing on Ice, to be able to relay the result of the viewer’s votes every week, our products are used regularly in critical, high-profile situations. We are the preferred supplier of earpieces to the BBC, ITV and Sky, along with most other broadcasters in the UK and many overseas. Combined with our experience in building custom-fitted in-ear products for broadcasting, shooting and motorsport, we also manufacture and repair hearing aids too. I hope this illustrates the unrivalled range of our expertise.”

“We are a family of hearing aid specialists. My Father and Mother were audiologists, and my wife, brother and cousin are all in the profession as well! Hopefully that will instill plenty of confidence in existing and new customers that we know what we are talking about”, Jonathan said.

Hearcentres is also at the forefront of any new technology in hearing aids. The equipment has become smaller, more stylish and easier to conceal in the ear. And, they now come in HD! The Horsham Hearing Centre offers the unique Sebo HD, a cutting edge hearing aid that gives superior ‘high-definition’ sound quality as well as being small, light and easy to wear without having to sit deep in your ear. Users say that they feel like they are not wearing a hearing aid at all.

The Horsham Hearing Centre is now a branch of Hearcentres Ltd, Jonathan’s new company, and one of seven established hearing centres which he has acquired, all offering the same professional, local service. The Horsham centre is the longest established hearing aid specialists in the town. “We offer a complete hearing care service and have three Hearing Aid Audiologists based at the Horsham practice with a combined total of over sixty years’ experience between us. This enables us to offer an unrivalled standard of hearing care in Horsham.” Jonathan also runs another ‘ear-related’ company in Horsham. Hearing Electronics Limited has been established since 1995 and manufactures specialist communication earpieces. Such is the knowledge and expertise of Jonathan and the company, it has become a trusted provider of custom-fitted earpieces to the television and sporting industries, who rely on the equipment for communication. “We manufacture and fit earpieces for many different applications. Whether it’s for Jenson Button to be able to hear his engineer

The centre, which is on the Worthing Road in Horsham (just opposite the Library), has recently been refurbished. The practice also offers a more “complete hearing care” service including clinical earcare (ear wax removal) on site, the only private hearing centre in West Sussex able to offer this service. For anyone uncertain about visiting a hearing specialist for the first time, Jonathan has some simple advice: “Many people put-off doing something about hearing loss until it really becomes a problem for them and those around them. It is much better to do something about it sooner rather than later. Modern hearing instruments are very discrete and easy to use. They can relieve the fatigue of straining to hear and genuinely help with your health and wellbeing. Anyone who feels they may have a hearing loss should come in and see us. We offer a complimentary initial consultation, our customer service is second-to-none and the results can be life-changing.”

Whatever label you give it, more and more people are taking steps to being more fulfilled and happy. He is a living, breathing testament to the joy that living your life on-purpose can bring. A dancer since the age of just two, he loved it and kept doing it. Today he travels the world dancing for the New Zealand Royal Ballet. But, how do you find out what your calling is? For some it comes naturally while for others it is anything but black and white. Thankfully there are steps that you can take to help you identify the reason you were put on the planet, and a few professionals that can help too if needs be. In last month’s issue of The Resident Magazine, life coach Cathryn Hindle contributed to the first in our two-part feature on living the life you were meant for. Now, in our February issue, another expert, Nikki Wild, talks us through three simple steps you can take, today! “It is my privilege to join my clients as they identify their purpose, make choices about how they live their purpose day to day and support them as they begin to walk a path that leads them to enjoy fulfilled lives

doing what they love. Having a sense of purpose for your life is the key to true motivation. We all have a purpose and one of my favourite aspects of my work is helping my clients to connect with theirs”, Nikki said. “When you are living on-purpose, you go beyond doing what is necessary into doing what you really enjoy – whether that is in a career, hobbies, home or personal life. We can all set targets and goals. Experience of working with my clients shows that achieving the results we desire is most likely when those targets are aligned with a true sense of purpose.” According to Nikki, there are three simple steps that will point you in the direction of your life’s purpose.

Step 1 What gets you out of bed in the morning? How many times have you woken up and dreaded the day ahead? There are some days when you can wake up enthusiastic, and others when you want to hide under the covers. Take some time to identify what the difference is between those days. What do you look forward to or what leaves you depleted and life-less when you try to get going?

Step 2 What are your carrots and sticks? Incentives come in the form of rewards that we’d like to receive (carrots) or things that we’d like to avoid (sticks). Your carrots indicate what motivates you. What gets you out of bed in the

morning? And what do you love? This is different from compensation rewards (such as money). It’s what my clients describe as a “warm glow inside”, a feeling that tasks are effortless or that they’re swimming with the tide. And it’s not only a glow on the inside either. Finding what motivates you lights you up, giving you that glow on the outside too.

Step 3 What are your milestones? Your purpose is like a path you walk. Along the way are milestones. The milestones are the goals you set and the achievements you enjoy. These can help you get from one stepping stone to another, which will ultimately lead to your goal. Ask yourself what milestones have been significant to you? What connection is there between them? Which milestones will you set next that will keep you on the path to your purpose?

AND WAKE UP!

JULIA MARTIN DISCOVERS THAT THE DAYS OF HUMILIATING HYPNOTHERAPY ARE LONG GONE, AND THAT THE TREATMENT CAN BE USED TO HELP YOU GET THE LIFE YOU WANT

I

t was not too long ago when the idea of hypnotherapy was associated with stage shows and mind manipulation for entertainment. The hypnotist was a mysterious man blessed with almost magical powers and his techniques were clouded in secrecy. The infamous gold watch chain routine was the classic image of how hypnotism worked - an innocent volunteer was transformed through watching the rhythmic movement of the swinging object. They were then at the mercy of the hypnotist, who could humiliate his subject into performing various comical actions in front of an audience. The sole purpose was humiliation for amusement. Yet hypnotherapy has shed its show business robes and is now recognised as a valuable and useful form of therapy which is recommended by medical practitioners and psychotherapists to help combat fears and addictions. Paul McKenna had a huge role in this validation of the art he practised for years as a stage entertainer, and his self-help books are recognised as valuable and useful guides for anyone wanting to lose weight, gain confidence, stop smoking or control stress. The basic premise behind hypnotherapy is that in order to change our behaviour we need to access our subconscious mind and reframe some of our habitual thought patterns. An example of this is the use of aversion tactics such as linking thoughts about a desired object to something which is repulsive. For example, imagining chocolate as tasting of lard or wine that tastes of vinegar. This leads the subject to reject customary habits and many hypnotherapists use a trigger mechanism to help pull the subject back to their subconscious conditioning. A trigger can be as simple as touching a finger with a thumb just before eating or drinking whatever they crave – this is often used in weight loss. Jo Woods has tried many diets in her time and was over the moon with the results of her course of hypnotherapy. “I lost a stone in a month and I felt very much in control of my eating habits and used the trigger to help me in times of weakness”, she said. But Jo admits that the effects lessened over time and she recommends regular top ups to help keep the focus. Other benefits of hypnotherapy are stress reduction and being able to switch off the conscious mind with all its demands and noise, to give the same effect as going on a nice holiday. In fact far from being shrouded in secrecy, the techniques of hypnotherapy are now open to all and self hypnosis is a fast-growing trend. The simple ability to be able to relax for even just ten minutes

by listening to gentle music or a self hypnosis CD can lower heart rate, muscle tension and open up access to the subconscious mind. Imagining floating in a warm pool can initiate calm feelings which will evaporate stress. These techniques rely on slowing down breathing by counting to three on the ‘in’ breath, holding the breath for the count of three and gradually breathing out to the count of three. Repetition of this and slowly releasing tension in muscles from the feet to the top of the head will induce a wonderful sense of peace. While in a state of deep relaxation, subliminal messages can be embedded deep into the subconscious through the voice of the therapist or a self hypnosis CD. Paul McKenna’s books all include CDs which have strong empowering messages. Visualisation is a strong part of self hypnosis and visualising a positive future will have an affirming effect on your day to day life. This all fits in beautifully with the current vogue surrounding the power of attraction which states that positive thought generates positive results as outlined in the book ‘The Secret’. Another less known benefit of hypnotherapy is its use to help people overcome heartbreak. Linda Walker was so heartbroken when her partner left her she grieved endlessly and could not let go of the thought of him. “I was obsessed and constantly idealised my image of him until I decided to take a course of hypnotherapy. I was then asked about the things that annoyed me about him and I told the therapist about his snoring, bad eating habits and patronising comments about my friends and he made me refocus on these aspects. Whenever I thought of him, I imagined him slurping soup and slavering over toast and it worked! I do not know why I wasted so much time on him!” Phobias are another area where hypnotherapy can work wonders and the fears can range from spiders to enclosed or open spaces. A hypnotherapist will need to find out about past history to discover the root of the fear, which can often be linked to an experience in childhood and then gradually the fear can be dissolved through a process of positive reinforcement and reframing of the experience. This type of work can be done in conjunction with counselling. It can take time but can be extremely effective. Hypnosis can be a part of all our daily lives and it can benefit us by boosting our creativity and imagination as well as making full use of our vast brains to combat stress, fears and addictions. Rather than losing control and acting foolishly, it can actually give us much more control over our own life. health & lifestyle

THE HYBRID JUST GOT HIP

Motors journalist Olli Nott takes a look at your more economical options when choosing a new car and asks have green cars finally gone stylish?

Hybrid cars. Say those two words to anyone and they’ll probably think about the first Toyota Prius and the first Honda Insight. They were awful. Both looked wrong hardly appealing to the young market they were directed at. Green cars were not sexy, appealing or desirable in any way shape or form. Now however, that’s all changed. Everyone is moaning about the petrol prices, and all want something that goes fast, looks good and costs little money. Car manufacturers listened to our cries. Lexus, the luxury arm of Japanese manufacturing giant Toyota, were always producing hybrid versions of the LS saloon and the RX SUV. Their latest offering, the CT is only available as a hybrid, and it looks stunning. Other manufacturers offer hybrid powertrains on their high-end vehicles, for example, the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid, the VW Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid. They are stylish vehicles in their own right, but have the added benefit of the hybrid economics - and lower road tax! For people who claim that hybrids don’t fit in with current styles and look too futuristic, these are the answer. But why do people think that a hybrid can’t be stylish? Many people told me they feel that a hybrid car is not considered to be cool, despite endorsements from the likes of Cameron Diaz and Leonardo Dicaprio. The electric powertrain may have the wow factor, but the novelty will wear off and you have to live with something that may be quickly outdated. Others argue that the hybrids are not speaking the same design

Porsche Panamera S Hybrid

and Cayenne vehicles. They look identical to their petrol, or diesel counterparts, yet they’re silent when you start them up. Lexus’ CT is full of the latest technology too, with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission that keeps the emissions below 95g per kilometre. If this is the case, hybrid engines in big road going cars, like the Volkswagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne may as well drop the regular petrol powered engines. The hybrid is a lot more economical, and even though it

language as ‘standard’ cars. However, the release of the new Honda CR-Z and the Prius show that the design is moving forward and the hybrids are leading the way.

may not be as powerful, taking the big SUV through the streets of central London is a lot cheaper. With the hybrid you don’t pay any congestion charge and if it’s below 100g of CO2 you pay NO road tax – zero.

But should a hybrid car look a certain way? The Lexus CT200h is only available as a 1.8 litre hybrid, yet its design is in keeping with the current Lexus range, and the same is to be said about the Porsche Panamera

console showing energy recuperation mode

The Honda CR-Z is a coupé hatchback, sporty styling similar to the Civic, Honda’s bestselling hatchback, yet a hybrid powertrain is the only engine option available. This

car is aimed at younger drivers, stylish, 20 somethings with a disposable income and who are in the know about what is classed as stylish, trendy and cool. The CR-Z is quoted by Honda to have ‘exciting, sporty looks that are born from a one-motion wedge concept, with a low bonnet line and wide stance. These looks are complemented by features such as the split level rear glass hatch. And the CR-Z is designed for greater economy and cleanliness too, with the shallow raked roofline and sharply truncated tail allowing it to cut through the air with minimal effort or noise. The CR-Z has also been cleverly designed to give you the so-called 2+2 layout inside, allowing you to share the driving pleasures of a sporty hybrid coupe with your family and friends.’ This suggests that sporty hybrids, like the CT200h F-Sport and the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid, are aimed at a younger, trendier generation of drivers. So to those who say that green isn’t stylish, you’re about to be proven wrong. If I could afford the £60,000 list price for a Cayenne S Hybrid, I’d pay it out without a doubt; it’s a desirable car with logical, high performance. So there is no hefty fuel bill to sting you. With it being a Porsche, you know that the styling and appeal of the car is great, so therefore you have the best of both worlds. And as Porsche puts it: “The greatest benefit of all: the Cayenne S Hybrid is a Porsche. And it drives like one too.” If it drives like one, I want one. And if that’s not to your taste, there’s always the Lexus, the Honda, the Toyota Prius or the Auris and Yaris HSD, or even the Volkswagen Touareg with Volkswagen’s first hybrid engine. Hybrids are the way forward. They’re cheaper to run, look much nicer these days, and I want one.

new generation of designers are beginning to create workplaces that are more thoughtfully designed, successfully mixing a range of spaces and technologies. They are showing that this is not only good for the people that work in these spaces, but it’s good for business as well. The working environment needs to motivate, stimulate and empower people to feel valuable and productive, but more often than not people are left feeling stressed and irritable. Fawn Art Consultancy is on a mission to brighten up Britain’s dreary

workplaces and bring to light an easy, stressfree way to add a powerful new dimension to the working environment through art. It doesn’t have to cost the earth either. Not only is it important to engage staff and pupils to make them feel special and productive but the working environment also says a lot about the organisation and can give clues as to how professional it is. First impressions are so important. These splitsecond judgments can make your business stand out from the crowd, and nothing can say this more than artwork which tells the viewer about who you are and what values you have.

Landscape 10 by François Pont

Last year Whitechapel Gallery had its first exhibition of a series of five displays titled ‘At Work’, supplied by The Government Art Collection who asked seven public figures to select works from the paintings, sculptures or drawings that are on display in their place of work for members of the public to view. The GAC always buys British art, works must be cheaply acquired and they must act as an extension of the diplomatic service and fit with all sorts of unusual environments. When a new minister takes up a post, he or she is entitled to ask the GAC to change the art on the walls of their office to reflect their own tastes, politics and interests. While this seems a great luxury to be able to pick and choose from 13,500 works ranging from Elisabeth Frink to Tracy Emin, it is interesting how important and influential artwork can be and the message it gives out to the public. So, you may be thinking that these changes come at considerable cost. Well we won’t lie, acquiring a Tracy Emin isn’t going to come cheap but there are affordable art solutions and refreshing walls with inspirational

artwork can be done with even the tightest of budgets. Whether you want a simple framed print for a dentist’s waiting room to brighten up your day or you have a large corporate office where you want to stand apart from your competitors or build a collection, there are hundreds of options and artists to draw inspiration or buy from. Placing the emphasis on quality, Fawn Art consultants spend much time visiting artists in their studios where we learn first-hand about their processes and hand-pick the very best artwork for our clients. We have helped to select artwork for a range of clients including King’s College London, leading architectural firms and private homes. We have framed prints and photographs from £75 all the way up to £8,000 for an original painting, as well as sculptures in a range of materials for outdoors or in large foyers. KIDS THESE DAYS A rise in backyard skate ramps is getting young people off the sofa and out in the fresh air. James Hood meets the man who’s building them and the kids who would rather be on a BMX than an Xbox

Loughlan O’Brien (left) and Tommie Brlecic by Hugh Chapman

This is kids at play, the old fashioned way. There are red sweaty faces, grazed knees, high fives and beaming smiles 109

H

orsham Skate Park is packed with people. From the hill which overlooks it, a sea of youngsters (mostly boys) can be seen poised at the top of wooden ramps on their bikes and boards, while waves of coloured T-shirts rise at the other end – and at great speed. It’s kids at play, the old fashioned way. There are red sweaty faces, grazed knees, high fives and beaming smiles. But the picture here is a far cry from the one being painted by the latest government statistics on youth obesity. Data from the Health Survey for England (HSE) shows that over 1 in 10 children aged two to 10, are obese. And, in 2007, the Governmentcommissioned Foresight report predicted that if no action was taken, 60 per cent of men, 50 per cent of women and 25 per cent of children would be obese by 2050. Worrying figures, but no sign of any obesity at the skate park. The site, which was unveiled last year, is the creation of Piers Chapman, owner of 9C Ramps. He said: “Places like this help kids stay active and fit. It’s great to see young people getting outside in the fresh air and doing something that gets them moving and makes them happy. It not only keeps them healthy, it keeps them out of mischief! There is a real sense of a community here too. The kids all have a common interest. It helps them make friends and talk. Plus they are relatively safe here. There are the usual trips and falls but that’s what being a kid is all about. It’s better than being at home watching TV.” Television is apparently the last thing on most of these kids’ minds. 16 year old Tommie Brlecic and 12 year old Loughlan O’Brien come down every day, weather (and parents) permitting. Tommie said: “I’d spend all my time here if I could. We all love coming down for a few hours. It’s brilliant and much better than being at home.” Loughlan added: “I come down straight after school and stay as long as I can, usually until I have to go home for dinner. I’d rather be doing this than anything else. I’m supposed to be just watching on the sides today because I’m still recovering from a broken collar bone, but I’ll probably have a quick go later on.”

Piers has designed skate parks for Nike and believes he is the perfect chap for the job. “I’m passionate about BMX riding and skateboarding myself, so I know about the mechanics of building a good skate park and how to make it safe and fun. Plus, I’m a perfectionist and really pay attention to detail. All these panels, curves and lines are intricately designed and pieced together. The team I have hired are all interested in the sport too, so the end result is something that is useable, durable and will last.” Perfect, then, if you are looking for a useable, durable present for your little boarder or biker - Piers also designs and builds bespoke skate ramps that you can have in your garden. “It’s something that is flexible and can be designed and installed around your existing space or garden. Many of my clients like the idea of getting their kids or teenagers out of the house. There is a real concern among parents that their youngsters will spend too much time glued to the TV or playing video games in isolation. Home ramps not only give them something fun and active to do outside, but it also means that parents can keep a watchful eye on them if necessary.” Skate ramps in the back garden? Kids these days I hear you cry, they don’t know they’re born. Whatever happened to the days of giving them a wooden yo yo and sending them off around the neighbourhood? They’re long gone unfortunately, and the introduction of the games console has contributed to a rise in kids who would rather be in a darkened room shooting a mafia don than being outside as well as a rise in parents with much lighter pockets. But as Piers puts it; if you are going to spend money on your children, why not make it an investment in their fitness? “There is no doubt that a skate ramp is a large and seemingly extravagant gift. But the cost of alternative entertainment for kids can really add up. Unlike a games console, there are few additional costs after you’ve bought one, and they are relatively low maintenance. Perhaps a skate park in the garden isn’t such a bad option after all. They keep the young ones healthy, happy, (not obese) and, most importantly, out of the house… worth every penny then.

Vale2ntine2 e2ve2ry1one2’s2 a

Spread the love this February says Bridget Jones, as The Resident columnist delves into the day of chocolates, handmade cards, and flowers from a petrol station

A

hhh...Valentine’s Day, the day of chocolates, hearts and flowers – preferably roses. The day when those in an intimate relationship show each other, through tokens of love, how much they mean to one another. And if you’ve managed to miss the multitudes of smoochy cards spilling out of every stationery outlet on the High Street, almost since New Year ended, then I’m impressed. Ever since the beginning of the 19th century handwritten Valentines have given way to mass-produced greetings cards. Just under half of us throughout the UK will spend money on our Valentines. It’s big business, with around £1.3 billion being spent on cards, flowers and chocolates and an estimated 25 million cards being sent. And I think it’s this commercial element that detracts a little from the true mystique of the day for me. Or, perhaps, it was the rather dodgy way I was first introduced to it. My very first Valentine’s card was sent from a boy who I used to compete with at horse shows, who I had spent many an hour exchanging doe eyed looks with while loitering around the horse box almost force feeding my pony more hay simply so I could look busy and still

maintain furtive glances with my beloved. Despite the fact that this boy was quite clearly ‘from the wrong side of the arena/town’ as far as my mother was concerned. Which, of course, only served to make him even more alluring, I was delighted when my very first proper Valentine’s card plopped on the doormat. From him. It started by looking completely promising with the ubiquitous pink frontage, fringed with pretty little hearts and what, I would like to recall, were little cherubs galavanting around a considerably bigger heart in the centre. But then the centre, oh the centre of the card was where things took a considerably darker turn with a rather gruesome skeleton plastered across two sides accompanied with the highly original wordage “I’m just Dying to kiss you”. Subtle. So ever since then there have been aspects of Valentines Day that I have liked – that little frisson of will my beloved honour it or forget it? And in my earlier years, Please God let me get at least one so I don’t look a complete failure before school assembly and then the sheer relief when TWO arrive. And then there are the downsides like the over zealous accordion player, with a rose clenched between his teeth, who seems to spring up unexpectedly at your romantic restaurant table, whether you want him to or not. Or the wilting bunch of flowers so obviously bought last minute from the garage just down the road by some husband when he combined it with filling his car up in the morning. Oddly, when we were going through our divorce, the quality of the bouquets increased considerably. Strange irony there somewhere. For me though the day is not just the preserve of lovers. It is a chance for us all to show someone we love them - be it your kids, your parents, grandparents or your pets. My kids, when they were younger, used to make me Valentine cards in pre-prep. Although woe betide I bring that up now. Legend has it that on the evening before he was about to be executed, St Valentine of Rome, wrote the first ever Valentine card himself, addressed to his beloved. It was a note that read simply ‘From Your Valentine’.
