Because apparently there are lessons we can all learn from stars of the stage that can help us be more confident, assertive and successful. So we spoke to Julia Martin who, after 25 years coaching young performers, is now turning her talents to adults, helping them improve their work and home life.

We look at the shift of the global economy to the east, and why it could mean thinking twice about taking up French and Spanish.

Finally, although I would never want to let my own personal feelings influence what goes in the magazine, as a dog lover I am thrilled to help highlight the good work of Canine Partners. Based here in Sussex, the charity trains puppies to become fully-fledged assistance dogs that open drawers, pick up keys and even select clothes for their physically challenged owners. At a recent graduation ceremony I attended for puppies, one man who had difficulty speaking summed up the day by saying: “My dog has made my life better. Thank you”.

FOR SALE SYMPTOMS Plumping cushions, nagging children and a nagging feeling you’re making a bad move. Bridget James, The Resident Magazine columnist, talks spring property-selling stress

hey usually start appearing around spring time – that overly obsessive interest in the undulations of the property market, a manic tendency to want to rush out and mow the lawn every five minutes and a general frenzied interest in the tidiness level of your home. That’s right, the chances are that, if you are currently experiencing any of these symptoms, then you are well on the way to having ‘Selling Your House Syndrome’. I’ve had the fully blown strain of this for several months now and believe me, it doesn’t get much better. It has an insidious way of creeping up on you, lulling you into a false sense of security at the beginning so you feel you’re the one that’s in control. After all, it was your decision to sell, wasn’t it? And it was a good one, you remind yourself. You needed to downsize, or upsize, depending on your circumstances. Mine was definitely downsizing – yes, I am

still kidding myself that the multitude of school stuff that comes with having two children, both active sports players, as well as various pet paraphernalia, will all fit into a considerably smaller house. And at first I felt empowered, the appropriate estate agent had been duly appointed, the viewings began to slot into the diary and we were off on our fantastical journey of house selling. The house looked its best for the first time in five years, I could wield the big stick of “you must keep your bedrooms tidy for the people who are coming round” over the kids and things even stayed in the same place for more than five minutes. But, slowly, more slovenly tactics took over. Last minute shoving of an entire work surface of clutter into cupboards, just ten minutes before viewings for example. Or worryingly harsh plumping up of cushions in the living room ensued. And when the kids

realised that those “people” who they were supposedly keeping their rooms tidy for, seemed to keep coming anyway, well, the usual state of play returned. Then indecision with the decision to sell in the first place occasionally reared its head. “Where will I ever get a view as lovely as this again? Will the next village shop be as friendly as ours? Will the dog walks be as good? Will I still have the dog!?” Until eventually the ‘For Sale Syndrome’ reached its peak and I realised “Oh, for God’s sake, you’re staying in Sussex not moving to the Sahara.” So, in short readers, if any of you are in the same boat, I mean house (let’s sort that first, before the boat, that’s a whole other story), then you are not alone, there are quite a few of us. And if any of you kind readers are, dare I say it, of a buying tendency, then we welcome you to our carefully prepared homes. Just don’t look in my cupboards. 17

The dinner party is back. So we called in events extraordinaire Rachael Burgess for some tips on how to make yours a truly stellar soirĂŠe. Prepare to take your place at the top of the social heap

THOSE of us old enough to remember our 20’s during the 80’s will remember it was very much the era of the ‘dinner party’. In the last decade restaurants have sprung up everywhere and become a rather more trendy way of socialising and no longer just for a treat or special occasion. But the recession has hit even the deepest pockets hard, and we are all looking for ways to cut back - hence the revival of the dinner party. Certainly, it’s not necessarily always a cheaper option (especially for the hosts) but there are many ways of holding a dinner party these days and that could involve everyone bringing a course or dish and, indeed, what goes around comes around and etiquette would say that you should get a return invitation before too long. And if you don’t you know who not to invite round again! So, just what does it take to make it work? Most importantly, don’t invite more people than you can comfortably seat round your table. And by the way, the magic number is six or above, not four. Your guests need someone to chat to while you are in the kitchen, otherwise they may follow you in. Seeing your pile of dirty pans and you whizzing round the kitchen in a frenzy is not a good look. You will be irritated and no matter how many times you tell them to take a seat they just won’t! This brings me nicely onto the guest list.

Here are some menu suggestions from Jane:

THE GUEST LIST RULES

If you are a couple and it is a couples ‘do’ then don’t invite your best friend who is single particularly if she is bright and attractive. The other women will watch her like a hawk and be unlikely to be interested in her dynamic career and the men won’t be allowed to talk to her. Definitely do not pair her up with your other half’s friend from work (unless of course she has previously expressed an interest in you doing so). Having said that it does seem to be socially acceptable to invite your husband’s male single friend from work, particularly if he is bright and good looking. The ladies will love it and the chaps probably won’t notice. If, however, you are single then getting a bunch of other singles together is a great way of socialising and meeting new people (after all, you might not fancy your best single friend but your host’s neighbour might). Everyone knows someone who is single and there is no uncomfortable pairing off or chatting up involved. Just relaxed socialising. Think about your guests carefully. Your husband’s quiet orderly accountant may not get on so well with any slightly outspoken, outrageous hippy friends who sold up house and home to traverse the third world and your wealthy art dealer pal from university and his non-working wife, who can’t decide what size pool to install in their villa are unlikely to have a lot in common with your financially struggling new neighbours. It is sort of common sense but a very important ingredient to a successful dinner party and one requiring some careful thought.

PLAN YOUR EVENT

This really can be fun. Diary some notes early on dietary requirements. This will make your guests feel special and not a last minute hiccup when they announce their fruitarianism. (you may need to look that up as I did once). Look at it as a relaxing project not a chore and really enjoy yourself. Plan your meal ideas and for this I have enlisted the help of local freelance cordon bleu chef and colleague Jane Bellinger. Jane says: “keep your dinner party simple, have only one course that you have to finish off at the last minute, your guests would much prefer simple, good quality food rather than complicated courses and a flustered you”.

TO START

Salad, avocado, bacon, rocket and walnut Have it ready in bowls and splash on the dressing as you take to the table.

Individual tarts Have a salad garnish ready on the plates, heat through tarts (spinach and gruyere, wild mushroom and walnut pastry, crab and gruyere) Home made soup Serve with a simple garnish, croutons tossed in mixed herbs, a thin slice of French bread with grilled goat’s cheese and bacon bits.

MAIN COURSES

Breast of chicken, stuffed with herbs and ricotta, well seasoned sausage meat, cous cous with dried fruit. Wrap tightly in cling film and poach, leave to go cold/overnight, unwrap and wrap in streaky bacon and put in a hot oven to heat through. Beef Bourgignon, Lamb tagine or Coq au vin - all prepared the day before and simply heated up on the night. Fish pie, prepare in the morning and cook in the evening. Melanzzane (aubergine, tomato, mozzarella and basil) prepare in the morning and cook in the evening

FOR DESSERT

Tarts of any sort can all be made beforehand. Buy some delicious ice cream or whipping cream too. Crumble. Cook the crumble mix and fruit separately so that when the oven is free, it is just a heat-up job. Pavlova. Whip the cream before the meal, it will only take five minutes. Add that and decorate with fruit. Not wanting any embarrassing phone calls the next day, it is important to remember some basic food hygiene points too-wash hands regularly, use separate chopping boards for raw meat/fish, do not store chilled food at room temperature for more than two hours and make sure hot food is well cooked and served hot.

A BIT ABOUT RACHAEL Rachael’s career in the events and hospitality industry began back in 1989, after leaving the high flying life as air crew to open a wedding dress shop and become a wedding planner. Rachael soon opened two other shops and received awards from Brides Magazine and National Westminster Bank South East for ‘Business Woman of the Year’. Rachael has since established a successful events and hospitality agency, training and supplying staff to the hospitality industry. In 2010, Rachael, a meticulous planner, re- branded her business as Lifestyle Sussex and now works as a freelance PA and Lifestyle Manager, organising the business, home and social lives of the county’s busiest residents. She also manages numerous corporate hospitality and business networking events. A mum of two teenagers, Rachael is also currently studying for a degree in Business and Management. Her motto is ‘a warm friendly smile goes a long way in life’.

If you are lucky enough to have a separate dining room then set it the day before. Twirly tablecloths and home made lavender scented napkins rings may not be your thing but it can still look fabulous. You can buy flowers, a table centre and at this point may I recommend Lettuce Flowers, another local colleague of mine who produces the most fabulous edible eco friendly table centres, which smell fantastic and prove a great talking point. Find out more at www. lettuceflowers.co.uk. Either way definitely add some candles if it’s a supper party. Treat yourself to new coloured linen napkins and indulge in some fun napkin folding, it’s great for involving the kids too. This age old art is experiencing a revival, beautifully folded napkins add a simple and stylish elegance to your table and a wonderful finishing touch to even the most simple table settings. I must stress that you do not need to exhaust yourself cleaning your house on the day - you have enough to do and your guests are coming to see you! A quick vacuum and dust will suffice but if nothing else please do top to toe the toilet/ bathroom. Especially if there are male teenagers in the house (bless) and this may be a good time to purchase some scented room spray. Do buy a selection of nice drinks for your guests. I would be surprised if each didn’t turn up with a liquid contribution but don’t expect one, though a polite ‘Oh a bottle would be super’ if asked

is perfect but it doesn’t necessarily mean that what they bring is what they want to drink. If you don’t know about wine then don’t pretend that you do. There is a fabulous range of wines adorning supermarket shelves these days and the latest trend is towards light refreshing rosé, a Pinot Noir and of course the easy to drink Prosecco – perfect for drinks on arrival with a few chopped strawberries. Also, do pop into your local wine merchant who will be more than happy to talk you through some ideas too. Remember to offer a good selection of ‘not too sickly sweet’ non alcoholic drinks and if in doubt always have plenty of good quality chilled sparkling water available. Pop some lemon slices and mineral water into an ice cube maker and freeze - looks and tastes fabulous served in crystal. A good host knows that it’s all about your guests, making them feel comfortable and special so do let your guests know if you are going to ‘dress up a bit’ or if it’s a casual affair. Now all you need to do is set the mood with some soft lighting and relaxing background music and pour yourself a little indulgence. Sip it slowly though. A tipsy hostess is not a good look. All in all the evening should be about relaxing, having fun and spending precious times with friends and family so most importantly, plan to enjoy it.

DOGis FOR LIFE James Hood visits Canine Partners, a charity which is training man’s best friend to pick up keys, open doors and improve people’s lives

here is a charity, based in Heyshott, near Midhurst called Canine Partners that is training puppies to become fully-fledged assistance dogs - and improve their owner’s lives. The dogs are trained there and at 12 satellite training centres around the country to help people with disabilities. Rather than simply acting as guide dogs, they are partnered with people who may be fully sighted, but who have difficulty managing day to day tasks such as opening doors, getting clothes out of the wardrobe and milk out of the fridge. They will even pick up their own food bowls to be washed after they’ve eaten. The dogs are nothing short of amazing. Clever and gentle, they understand their role in life – to help those they are partnered with to live more independently and safely, and in many cases, to be their companion. The charity, which was founded in 1990 and receives no government funding, relies on volunteers to be ‘puppy parents’. They take dogs home for between 12 to 14 months and train them to take on all manner of tasks. Once the dogs are ready, they are returned to Canine Partners before being paired with people who need them. Joe Murdoch is one of those people. After 17 years in the army he was injured by an explosive device while on duty in Iraq. Now disabled, Joe also suffers from severe post-traumatic stress and has learnt to walk with prosthetic limbs. He said: “I was at my lowest when the opportunity was presented to me to have a canine partner. I went to their training centre at Heyshott and it was Radley who chose me. I think he made a great choice. Radley had been trained to do many things, including collecting the post, loading and unloading the washing machine and opening the machine door too. Most impressive is his ability to pick up a five pence piece. He is my best friend and a wonderful companion, who has given me strength and meaning in my life to live with the loss of my legs and enjoy living again.” Tracey Kessterton is partnered with Lewis. She said: “Lewis is now so much a part of my life. When I wake, stiff in the mornings, Lewis tugs me to a sitting position so I can get up. He rounds me up for our walk in the morning, brings my shoes, keys, mobile phone and whistle. When we return from walks he tugs the door open for me so I can reverse my mobility scooter back in. He is in charge of the letterbox and brings me a letter at a time, usually after he’s done a lap of the garden with it! Lewis empties the washing machine for me and is very good at picking up dropped pegs for me when I’m hanging things out. One morning at the weekend I went back to bed, and he brought me a bottle of nail varnish! Eileen Hobson has a rare neurological disease called Stiffmans Syndrome. She said: “I wasn’t expected to ever leave hospital but, thankfully, after 20 years I managed it. Coming into the community in April 2003, on a specially made, reclined electric wheelchair it was wonderful to be out of hospital but I was still totally dependent on

Within two days, we’d formed a strong bond. He’s so affectionate, but also quite crazy, a real comedian. He always wants to play with his blanket and loves lying on his back with his legs in the air. He’s a little crackers, so I think we’re a good match. Sailor has enabled me to have a life again

The ceremonies, at which Eileen and Sailor graduated, are held regularly to congratulate those who have been partnered with dogs as well as those people involved in their training. Dogs and potential owners are given plenty of opportunity prior to graduating to find out if they are a good match. Some dogs have skills which are more suited to particular disabilities and therefore great care and attention is given to finding a suitable canine partner. The charity has a team of employed and skilled trainers who teach dogs, their puppy parents and new owners how to behave and learn their skills. At a graduation ceremony held in March, one dog owner, Toby, said: “I go into schools to teach young people about living with a disability. I used to get all the attention, but not anymore. My dog Toby gets it all now!” Denise, who graduated on the same day said: “He’s changed my life. He not only sees when I’ve dropped something, but he can

was having drinks with a friend of mine at Canary Wharf recently. Adam, a banking lawyer had been offered a high-paying job in America, with a selection of cities to choose from. He had declined, much to my amazement. “It might seem like the promised land but it’s not the only option anymore”, he said. I was equally stunned. No one turns down America, do they? The home of the Statue of Liberty, the Oscars and the American dream? The land of plenty that brought us The Simpsons, the iPod… Britney!? Surely not. “It’s a great place, don’t misunderstand me. I love it, and there is so much possibility there, but the world is moving east. It’s all about China, Hong Kong, Singapore. In another few years I expect I will be living there. My company and firms throughout the Western world are setting up shop there, at an impressively fast pace”, he added. On further investigation, the numbers do add up. At the last count, around 60 per cent of the world’s population lives in 46 states across Asia (approximately four billion people). Asia is the world’s fastest growing part of our planet. China is the second largest economy in the world and both China and India are the two fastest growing economies. (The UK is about the sixth but I think Brazil just overtook us and we are certainly behind Japan, the US and Germany). Much of the world’s wealth lies in Asian parts of the world, such as China, Japan and Hong Kong as well as oil rich countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Our conversation, inevitably turned to the future and languages. “Why learn French?” he asked. “So you can order a hot chocolate on the ski slopes? If anything you should speak Spanish (I already do, by the way) but the language we all should be learning, and should be teaching our children, is Mandarin.” My two nieces, both still at school, live in Hong Kong and are pratically fluent in both English and Mandarin. And it would seem that it is not only something that the children of British ex-pats are doing. Graeme Owton is the headmaster at Handcross Park School, in West Sussex. He knows how important it is to give

children the opportunity to learn Mandarin, so much so that it is now part of the curriculum. He told The Resident Magazine: “Quite simply we teach Mandarin because there is going to be a place for it in what is becoming a smaller, more glabalised world. China is a world player. And 800 million people speak Mandarin. We would be doing a disservice to young people as educators if we ignored that fact. Learning Mandarin will potentially give our children a massive advantage. Much of the work they will do in years to come will involve Asian economies and businesses. Just think how great it would be for them to be able to converse in a meeting in Mandarin. I’m not saying that we will all be speaking it. I think that English will always be widely spoken. But Mandarin as a second language will give you a major advantage over the next person, especially important in a competitive job market.” But it is not only practical for us to learn Mandarin instead of a European language. It can help us become more open minded and educated about the eastern world. Graeme added: “It can help prepare you for the future, and for modern life. For young people in particular it will open their minds. I wouldn’t be surprised if very soon we see more links being made in schools in both the UK and Hong Kong and Singapore. Exchanges for students will give them fantastic opportunities and only broaden their horizons.” So what do parents think of the shift to a more eastern culture for their children? And what about those of us who grew up believing that French and Spanish was impressive (and difficult) enough? Mr Owton added: “There is no doubt that there will be a place for Spanish for example in modern life. That remains one of the most spoken languages in the world. But rather than simply picking the language of countries closest to us or in Europe, we need to examine how the world is changing. It is getting smaller and more accessible all the time. And I have not come across any skepticism from anyone who understands that. It’s a really positive move.” 47

The headmaster of Great Walstead School believes excellent teachers, the great outdoors and happiness are the key to seeing young people thrive “One of the most important aims for our pupils at Great Walstead School is that they are happy. Because if they are happy, success will come”, said Colin Baty, the headmaster at the school in Lindfield, near Haywards Heath. Mr Baty is only the sixth headmaster to take the reins at the school – a testament to its history and his long-standing predecessors. Established in 1927 by RJ Mowll with a small cluster of just 15 boys, the school has retained its traditional values. Today, it is a co-educational facility that still operates according to Christian beliefs. The school encourages young people to grow and learn both indoors and outside, making good use of the exceptional surroundings at their disposal. This is probably why a former parent described Great Walstead as a place of “mud and love.” The outdoors and surrounding grounds play a big part in the learning and development of children at the school. There are 270 acres in which pupils can explore, learn and take part in activities. “It’s important to get children learning actively. We get them outside at every opportunity. Whether it’s for learning

about the eco-system or for cross country or kayaking. It forms a significant part of a school day. It also demonstrates the variety of options available to our pupils. Mountain biking, archery, orienteering are all there for the taking. And we do love these pupils”, added Mr Baty, who has been headmaster here for two years. “We watch them grow and help them develop into polite, well-mannered happy young people. We focus on five core values: Christian faith, dedication, success, the environment and communication. And above all we take academic subjects very seriously.” The school takes children from Nursery (aged two and a half) to Year 8, at the age of 13, when pupils continue on to senior schools. There are staff members on site 24 hours a day and extra curricular activities going on well into the evening, providing hardworking and busy parents with an opportunity to leave their children in safe hands. Teachers at the school are leaders in their field. They combine excellence in education, with teaching pupils fundamental lessons in life, such as kindness, good

manners and preparation for the outside world. “We don’t just see our role as simply to pass on the basics of Maths and English, but also to teach children to make eye contact, hold the door open for people and say good morning. Most important of all, we teach children to believe in themselves. That is when they will excel.” And watching pupils excel and develop into young men and woman is something Mr Baty feels he is privileged to witness. “I am honoured to be the headmaster at this school. I take the role very seriously. I feel I have a good rapport with the pupils. I also know it is no small responsibility educating these young people It’s difficult to call it a job when it is this rewarding”, Mr Baty added. The headmaster comes from a family of educators. His father and grandfather were both headmasters and his brother recently held the position as well. Mr Baty added: “education gives children the confidence to strive for whatever it may be they want to achieve in life.

GARDENS A landscape gardener is going solo having just set up his own business. He tells James Hood why he loves his life outdoors and says itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not too late to get your flowers blossoming by summer

e’s been a landscape gardener since he left school and now, after almost 15 years in the business, Daniel Clark is going it alone having set up his own company - Open Space. Now matter how big or small your garden or how modern or traditional you want it to look, Daniel’s your man. He’s worked at some of the most prestigious shows in the country, including the Chelsea and Hampton Court flower shows, where he and his colleagues have been wowing crowds with their creations for years. He has experience working on a wide spectrum of properties. Whether it’s a sprawling estate in the Sussex countryside or a townhouse on the Thames in Putney, Daniel can turn his green fingers to any project. He said: “The range of landscaping I can do is very broad. I’ve been doing this a long time so I can work on small decks for people who just want to sit out in their garden or the complete re-design and landscaping of a large open space. Over the years I’ve worked on all types of gardens, everywhere from the coast to places like Notting Hill, and everyone wants something different so people can trust me to listen to want it is they want, and deliver that.”

Sometimes it can take a professional to spot ways you can utilise space more effectively or install something like a water feature to make you realise just how great your garden can be. Because I’m in the business of landscaping, I also keep an eye out for new trends and all the latest materials that can be used. So my clients can have a really modern garden if that’s what they are looking for.” The landscape gardener says that it is his passion for the work that gets him out of bed and outside everyday, come rain or shine. “There’s nothing nicer than working outdoors.

I absolutely love it and being in the fresh air is the best place to be. Every day is different – it doesn’t get better! It can be physically demanding and the winters can get pretty cold, but I wouldn’t want to be inside all day long. For me, landscaping is my dream job”, he told The Resident Magazine. Daniel has spent years working with some of the best landscapers in the business, some of whom have been mentors to him. He added: “I’ve been lucky enough to work with people who thrive on doing an excellent job, who want to do the best they possibly can and have been willing to pass on their skills and knowledge to me. I’m really grateful to have worked with some exceptionally skilled people and that means I can now offer a first-rate service to my own clients.

Afternoon tea might seem like a decadent treat, but try hard enough and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be able to find a reason to justify making a reservation. Sitting in a hotel lounge, perhaps with a newspaper, book or the latest copy of The Resident Magazine, or in great company while being served with delicate finger sandwiches, scones, cakes and pastries is a gastronomic delight and a wonderful way to while away an afternoon. Here, we round up five of the best afternoon teas out there, so pick someone to join you, choose a venue and enjoy.

ALEXANDER HOUSE

Head out towards East Grinstead and nestled in 120 acres of park land you will find Alexander House Hotel. A beautifully restored country house with an award-winning spa, this is a retreat for the restless. The smallest of the hotel group’s options, Alexander House provides a welcome sanctuary from modern life. Afternoon tea is served in the light, airy lounge and, on warmer days, in the garden. The traditional feast includes finger sandwiches, scones, pastries and cakes and as much tea as you can drink. Afternoon tea is £19.95 per person or £25 including champagne.

THE SAVOY

Follow guests like Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and The Queen through the doors of The Savoy and you won’t be disappointed. Beautifully and faithfully restored between 2007 and 2010, The Savoy combines Edwardian and Art Deco design and offers sheer opulence from the moment you arrive. Afternoon tea is served in the Thames Foyer, a light airy lounge with a domed glass ceiling and the Winter Garden gazebo, from which the resident pianist tickles the ivories. The service is exceptional and the food is, well, exactly what you would expect from such an iconic hotel. Perfection. A selection of fine teas from around the world, including the Savoy’s own blend make up the drinks menu. Finger sandwiches, scones, pastries and cakes replenished ad infinitum. Afternoon tea starts from £40 per person or £51 with a glass of champagne.

COWDRAY FARM SHOP CAFÉ

If big hotels aren’t to your taste, but you still enjoy a cream tea, head over to Midhurst and the Cowdray Farm Shop Cafe. Offering a range of light bites, hot meals and the traditional cream tea, The Priory Cafe is a real treat. Serving fresh, local produce, much of which is sourced from the Cowdray Estate itself, the Priory Cafe offers delights for every appetite. It prides itself on its first class team of chefs, many of whom have also worked in Michelin starred restaurants. It has recently won the FARMA award for best on-farm cafe. All food, even the bread, is made on site. And if you really like what you try, well then you can treat yourself to something to take home from the farm shop. Cream teas are just £3.95.

THE GRAND, BRIGHTON

Like a great ocean liner rising out of, arguably, Britain’s most beautiful promenade, the Grand Hotel is one of Brighton’s most iconic buildings. It also has to be best option for people watching. Sit in the Grand’s airy conservatory and watch all of Brighton pass by. Afternoon tea is served in the conservatory and the Victoria Lounge and, in warmer weather, on the terrace. Finger sandwiches, cakes and scones make up the Grand feast, but the opulent venue means the food may come in (still rather commendable) second place to the surroundings. Afternoon tea is £19.95 per person Monday to Thursday and £24.95 Friday to Sunday. Champagne is £10.75 a glass.

SOUTH LODGE

Guests always enjoy the warmest of welcomes at South Lodge. A local gem, South Lodge offers the decadence of afternoon tea in a beautiful country house setting. Cosy winter afternoons in front of the fire are replaced by basking on the terrace with views over the rolling countryside when the weather improves. Either is a pleasure. After a South Lodge afternoon tea, you won’t need to eat again for quite some time. A selection of finger sandwiches, scones and pastries are followed with a slice of one of Hayley’s delicious homemade cakes. Tea and coffee is topped up for as long as you can drink it. WHAT I WISH I’D TOLD MY MUM A good curry and Cliff Richard – Ashley Wabe remembers his mum and says given the chance he would simply say thank you. And sorry for breaking that nest of tables “I think of my mum when I’m cooking, because she taught me how to do that. I think of her when I drink a cup of tea as well, because she made me one every morning. And when I hear Cliff Richard. She loved Cliff Richard!” Ashley Wabe has treasured memories of his mum, who died of cancer when he was 28. As well as being a good cook, he says she had plenty of other admirable attributes. “She was a good friend, had a great sense of humour and was protective, especially of her family. I was a total mummy’s boy. And she would support and back my dad to the end as well.” Ashley holds a management position at record company EMI – something he says he wishes his mother could see. “She would be pleased I’m in the music business. Not least because when I was living at home my room was covered in records and posters. So she would probably laugh about that now.” And what would she think of the person he has become? “She would be proud of me”, he told

The Resident Magazine. “I remember how proud she was of me when I got my degree. And I think she would be even more so now. I’m there for people, just like she was. I’m caring, and I’ve married someone great, Louise. They would get on so well, because Louise nags me just like mum.” “I miss her immensely. Mother’s Day can be difficult, because a lot of people are going off to see their mums. If I could tell mine anything it would be thank you. I’d thank her for everything. And for the way I am, the person I am. I never thanked her enough. And I would probably own up to breaking that nest of tables one night when they were away in the New Forest. I’d love to go for a curry with her. She loved her curry and every now and again, if my dad was away for work or something, she would say ‘let’s go and have a curry’. I will remember those times forever. It would just be nice to hear her voice. I wish I could call her and listen even though she would just listen to me, unconditionally. Mums do that don’t they.” 63

SPRING IN YOUR YOU STEP Seasoned rambler Bridget Glynne-Jones walks us through three countryside routes you will love in the springtime

G R UR I

n light of the recent cold spell you could be forgiven for not wanting to blindly rush out, boots strapped on, map in hand to explore the footpaths and bridle paths of Sussex without just a momentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hesitation. Consideration given to the inevitable mud bath encounter and the ache of icy cheeks and of sore chin may well have checked your hearty ambition. In

truth, it is completely understandable if the recent weather weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had since Christmas has not induced even the hardiest outdoor enthusiast to venture into the fields and woodlands of our lovely county. But as sure as (spring) eggs is (spring) eggs, the weather will improve and when it does, seize the day and head out to sample and savour some of the lovely walks to be enjoyed in this area

The three walks chosen below are particular treats and will require no more planning than blocking the time required out in your diary to get there, walk and return if you follow the instructions on your Ordnance Survey map carefully. They are not difficult and the pleasures are myriad. They have been picked out as being the perfect spring walks when the slightly longer days and steadily warming sun has taken the edge of the biting cold and boggy ground.

MIDHURST

The first is atop The Downs. If you head to Midhurst and then Walk one southwards through Cocking to the top of Cocking Hill on the A268 you will chance across a car park on the right hand side. This is where the South Downs Way crosses the road as it bisects the county and from this spot if you head west up the trail there are stunning views and some beautiful countryside to explore. You will have to remember to turn your head round occasionally to experience these views on the outward bound part of this walk but don’t worry if you forget, the views are constant and panoramic on the return part, just when you need them most. This

walk is fairly long at just over seven miles and some would consider it the best part of a day gone but it will be rewarding and etched on your memory for some time. One of my personal favourites, it allows you the opportunity to really get into the heart of the Downs and away from the ‘main drags’ as you veer south away from your westward march along the South Downs Way and head down through the Westdean Estate to reach a pretty valley and a quiet lane. Swinging up hill through a magnificent dry valley will take you back on to the SDW before you head for home. At this time of year, the early wild primroses and violets are easy to spot and if you are really lucky, the unmistakable and incessant chatter of the skylarks overhead in the open downland can be heard.

A 7.3 mile walk across the South Downs which incorporates parts of the South Downs Way. Begin at Cocking Hill car park, off the A286 just south of Midhurst.

)

Take the South Downs Way heading westwards along the made up track, soon to become a chalky path, for around ¾ mile before reaching a large round boulder. Fork left here on to the bridle path away from the main track. Here is the first of the tumuli sites over to your right. The white boulders are installations by the artist Andy Goldsworthy. Continue for around 1 mile to reach another boulder. Fork left here, heading downhill.

)

Stay on this, as it swings slightly left to reach a crossing (logging) track. Turn right here and then immediately fork left on the bridle path to head downhill again through the conifer forest. Reaching the bottom of the hill maintain your direction up the hill the other side.

)

Stay ahead until you reach a path by another large boulder. Turn left to walk down through the Westdean Estate. All of the heating and hot water needs of West Dean College (and parts of the village) are met entirely, and on a sustained basis, by using wood fuel grown on the West Dean Estate. Continue for just under a mile to reach a lane.

)

Turn right down the lane, keeping right as another lane joins from the left. Just after the lane bends sharply left handed, turn right on the footpath at the crest of the hill.

)

Stay on this footpath to reach a gate. Continue ahead out in to the open to soon pass a small stone barn on your right. Stay on the track taking you up through the valley ahead of you following the line of the overhead wires.

)

At the top of the valley, entering a field via a gateway, hug the left hand side following the field hedge round to the left to reach a stile beside a gate. Cross over to reach the South Downs Way.

)

Now turn right along the track (marked SDW) and continue along this for a little over 2.5 miles until you reach the car park at Cocking Hill and the finish.

ARUNDEL

March-time may be a little early for bluebell walks though Walk two they do seem to be appearing earlier and earlier. But as everything will be springing eternal why not attempt just under four miles alongside the River Arun. Head to Arundel, a lovely starting point and follow the route of the Monarchs Way before an amble alongside the river as you make for Houghton Bridge. (Should you like the idea of visiting Amberley, a one-mile stroll up the road will take you to the village and is well worth your while, adding an extra dimension to the walk with it’s thatched houses, pub, a village store, pottery, Church, Castle… I could go on.

When you reach Houghton Bridge, a delightful cafe awaits you for a coffee or, timed well, a nice lunch before your two return options. Either make for the railway station on the other side of the road for a five minute train journey back to Arundel or just walk back to the ancient bridge over the river and follow the other bank for around four miles all the way back to the town the views of the Castle will be your guide. From the riverbank you should spot the local bird life and wetland plants which should begin to proliferate at this time of year. Remember to wear some stout waterproof boots (good advice whatever the weather) as in wet periods this floodplain can be very wet and spongy under foot.

Begin in Arundel town centre. Leave the car at Amberley Station at Houghton Bridge and take the train to Arundel, then an easy walk in to the town centre. The walk back to Amberley along this route is just under 4 miles. Or leave the car in Arundel and get the train back.

From the town centre head up the high street, past the Norfolk Arms Hotel to soon pass the Cathedral. Just after the school then on your left, fork right (signed with cricket parking) and continue on to go through some big red gates into Arundel Park.

)

Stay on ahead up the metal track. When you begin to draw level with the tessellated folly, Hiorne Tower, turn right in front of it to cross the gallops and locate the path in to the woodland (marked The Monarch’s Way). The Hiorne Tower was built by Francis Hiorne to prove his abilities to the 11th Duke of Norfolk. The Monarch’s Way is a 615-mile path that approximates the escape route taken by King Charles 11 in 1651 after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester. Head briefly downhill and then left over a stile in to an open area. Stay ahead downhill on the track (or drop down in to the dry valley below).

At the cross roads at the bottom of the hill, head up the steep grass path (signed MW) and continue ahead over the open grassland, maintaining your direction for ½ mile to eventually skirt some woodland before reaching a viewpoint looking north, your destination visible over to your right.

Head through the gate you see ahead of you and stay on this track downhill, soon sweeping right handed and then turn left (signed footpath) to continue on down. When near the bottom of this woodland descent, turn right through the metal kissing gate/wall to immediately turn left to walk alongside the riverbank.

Stay on this path for ¾ mile following the river. After the high chalk cliffs on your left of Houghton Chalk Pits and just as you see a house appearing to your left, take the indistinct and unsigned footpath forking you right to allow you to continue walking along the river bank (if you reach the wooden gate, retrace your steps until you can access this small path). Now stay on this all of the way until you reach the road (B2139) and Houghton Bridge/Amberley Station. (Or, when you reach the Bridge, walk down the opposite bank, following the river all the way back to Arundel). Amberley Museum and Heritage centre is worth a visit - dedicated to the industrial heritage of the South East there is lots for children and for adults and includes a picnic area, gift shop and restaurant. 67

EBERNOE COMMON

The last walk is just over five miles around Ebernoe Common. Walk three A delightful part of rural West Sussex, this internationally important area is a nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest maintained by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Among its ancient woodland of huge oaks and beech trees, the shady glades and ad hoc ponds support a huge diversity of plants and animals with 14 out of 16 species of native bat, including a couple of rare ones - the Bechsteins and the Barbastelle. No guarantee you will see these, particularly at this time of year but you will delight in the rest that this area has to offer. With luck and at the right time, you may spot orchids, fungi, lichens and so on. The Trust has also purchased some adjoining farmland to allow wild meadows to flourish and creating a corridor for the fauna and flora to move between the Common and the wider countryside.

If you begin in Balls Cross and head north you enter ‘the common’ – think woodland, not open areas of gorse, before you reach the church, which was constructed from locally made brick in the 19th century. The low walls prevent the rabbits eating away at the wildflowers prevalent in the kirkyard. The lane through the hamlet of Ebernoe unusually bisects the cricket field - fun in summer to wait until the end of the over when a game is in progress before driving/walking on. For an easy goanywhere sort of saunter you would be hard pressed to beat Petworth Park, a stones throw from our third walk. It is free entrance in to the park (only a visit to the house is charged) and is particularly good for families with trails marked out and many events staged throughout the year. The whole area is some 700 acres but it would be hard to get lost and there is something rather nostalgic and evocative of times gone by if you do glimpse the deer, which graze under and around the ancient trees throughout the parkland. If you don’t have small children a visit to the house is a must - it contains some of the National Trust’s finest artwork

Park in Balls Cross, somewhere close to the pub is fine. This walk is a real woodland wander and in fact on Ebernoe Common itself (less of a common, more dense woodland) you have the right to roam. If your sense of direction is not well developed however you may be best to follow the instructions for this walk and to make doubly sure of not going wrong, take a map with you. Otherwise, just explore the area.

Head left down the road from the pub car park and then take the left turn signed to Northchapel and Ebernoe. After just after ¼ mile, turn left down a driveway with a footpath sign and stay on this until you pass a large house on your right. Butcherland to your right is an experimental area of reclaimed arable land being left for conversion back to woodland and wild meadow.

Stay ahead and ignoring the first two paths to the left, take the third footpath off to the left away from the driveway. Stay ahead on this signed path, maintaining your direction for ¾ mile through the woodland until you reach a track at a T junction by three upright posts. Turn right to reach and cross a cattle grid (by Ebernoe Common information point). Stay on ahead to reach the Church. This nineteenth century Church is lovely as a result of it’s seclusion. A brief stop to look will be accompanied by astonishing bird song on a still day).

Stay on up the track to reach the lane. Turn left and walk down the lane, crossing the cricket pitch. The lane swings left and as it swings right, head left in to the woodland taking the left of two paths. Follow the signs as you drop downhill over a stream and up out of the wood to walk along a field side, exiting via a pedestrian gate to reach a track.

Turn right here, soon passing a remote house and continue on in to the woodland via a pedestrian gate. Stay on this path as it winds through the wood following the signs (staying ahead at a three point sign) until you reach a T junction.

Turn left here to stay on ahead for ¼ mile to reach a track. Turn right. Then either (a) stay on this driveway to retrace your steps and reach the lane again before turning right to walk back in to Balls Cross again or (b) turn immediately right on the next signed footpath and follow this as it winds through more woodland until you exit on the Balls Cross Road. Turn left to find the pub.

One of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest houses re-opens from its annual winter hiatus this month, and what better time of year to explore the exquisite property and surrounding grounds?

As the weather gets warmer and the daffodils begin to open, so too does Petworth House. It is surrounded by a deer park and houses one of the most important and impressive art collections of our time, including work by Turner, Van Dyck, Reynolds and Blake and carvings by Grinling Gibbons. Guests can also tour the Servants’ Quarters as well as the Historic Kitchens, which are home to over 1,000 copper pots and pans. For mum On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 March, the ‘Say it with Flowers’ event invites mothers and

families to Petworth House to create a hand tied posy or corsage in the courtyard. To make the day even more of a delight, the Pleasure Grounds will be covered in a blanket of daffodils – a sure sign that spring has arrived and a stunning sight to behold. Mother’s Day is a special event at Petworth House. It was traditionally a day when servants were given a day off to visit their own mothers, often taking daffodils with them. For Easter The family orientated ‘Eggs in Space’ gives younger visitors and their parents the chance to experience the majestic grounds at Petworth House as well as enjoy a little chocolate too. The event is being held on April 7, 8 and 9 from 11am to 4.30pm. Guests will go on a tour of the universe and are encouraged to dress in alien attire for an awe-inspiring planetarium show. Afterwards there will even be an opportunity to create and launch your very own rocket, as well as taking part in a quiz trail – just make sure you’re back in time for a chocolate egg, donated by Cadbury. PRETTY PEPLUMS As the weather warms up the peplum makes an appearance, it’s spring’s big silhouette story. A peplum is a short flared, gathered, or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman’s jacket, dress, or blouse. Plain or patterned, the pretty peplum flatters most shapes as it adds feminine definition and detail It can be highly structured, or soft and flirty - and it‘s not just for eveningwear; coupled with sharp tailoring a peplum adds a little chic to workwear too. One to try. IT’S ALL ABOUT SHIMMER Embrace this season’s shimmer. “Glistening silk organzas and high-tech fabrics with a luminous glow are the new way to shine for spring, after lighting up the catwalks at Chanel, Christopher Kane and Marc Jacobs,” says Vogue UK. Don’t be afraid to let your outfit make a statement this spring by wearing beautiful iridescent and pearlised fabrics with lots of sparkle. For inspiration, pop in and see Sarah at Cape Scarlett boutique on Horsham. “I’ve definitely noticed a departure from the sequins of winter to much more subtle sparkle in the form of iridescent fabrics”, Sarah told The Resident Magazine. “It is a very pretty look this season and there are some great new colours too.” The spring will also usher in cooler shades that have just a whisper or tint of colour. When it comes to shimmer, steer clear of sickly-sweet shades and opt for subtler pastels: glacier blue, spearmint and soft yellows, greens, coral and dusty rose. If you don’t know which pretty pastel to pick, you can colour block them and wear more than one at a time. My advice is to accessorise your shimmer with dainty and understated pieces of jewellery; metallic and classic pearls will also be big favourites this summer.

BOLD IN PRINT One of spring’s most exciting trends is print. “The SS12 collections were full of print with exciting twists such as the aquatic, sports luxe and global traveller themes” says Buying and Merchandising Director Luisa de Paula at www.my-wardrobe.com. Bold and colourful, animal and floral, prints are big news – as are stories from the sea, with tropical fish tattooed across taffeta cocktail dresses, and shimmery seahorses, starfish and scallop shells adorning dresses, jackets and handbags. For summer “It’s all about floral from the darling buds of May to tropical prints,” says Sarah at Cape Scarlett, “the more colour the better!” The scarf print deserves a special mention. It’s loud, girly, yet familiar and reminiscent of the indulgent ‘80’s. The scarf print will be everywhere this summer: blouses, trousers, tops, skirts and dresses. Dare to wear it top to toe, or if that is just a little too much for you, invest in at least one piece. A ‘must have’ for this season. STEPPING OUT FOR SPRING “The almond toe is making a comeback this season”, says Nicci, from Buckle shoe shop in East Street, Horsham. “Shoes and sandals in subtle shades of pastel, snake skin and beading detail are coming in to complement the new spring soft tones. And there will be some new bright candy colours too.” In terms of heel heights, pick your fancy - and look out for the arrival of the ‘flatform’ (which is a flat wedge) the new way to add stylish height. SEASONALLY DRESSED Dresses for spring and summer will come in all different lengths, styles and colours providing every woman with an opportunity to find something she likes a lot. The asymmetrical hemline is a big spring/summer 2012 trend which extends not only to dresses, but to various tops and coats too. One-shoulder necklines, swingy skirts and handkerchief hemlines on shirts, skirts and dresses present a dreamy, soft styling, which looks good on women of all ages; and look out for fabulous evening and party dresses with trains – very glam; trains have already made their appearance on the red carpet at the Bafta’s and Grammy Award ceremonies. One to watch. This season is an interesting one for men, as bright new colours put a smile back on our faces. Denim and chinos will come in a rainbow of colour, both vivid and pastel, in an update of the khaki, which has ruled men’s summer wardrobes for too many seasons now. In celebration of the Queens’ Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, bright blue chinos will be a frontrunner and the colours: red, orange and mustard will also have a part to play. SUMMER SHIRTS So you’ve got the jeans and a blazer right? Now how about a new shirt? “Designers are experimenting with bold print in men’s shirting, the go-to brand being D&G, whose rococco scarf prints were all over their final catwalk show”, says Lee Douros at www.my-wardrobe. com. Bold prints on shirts for men will be in (but please save your Hawaiian shirts for holiday only) and for that all important new white shirt, skip the bright white and choose a bone white or ‘dirty white’ instead. BENTLEY, BUT BETTER In the absence of a test drive, Olli Nott takes a look at the latest launch from Bentley, as it makes a dramatic entrance What is bright red, weighs 2,320 kilograms and costs £122,000? It’s the new Bentley Continental GT, albeit suspended beneath a helicopter, as it was flown over downtown Munich during the rush hour in February. The stunt celebrated the arrival of the new 4.0 litre V8 from Bentley Motors. The V8 engine - developed in conjunction with Audi - displaces just under 4.0 litres, but, equipped with twin turbochargers, produces 500bhp, and the engine can also deactivate four cylinders to become a V4 to save fuel under a light throttle load. The 4.0 litre V8 is much smaller than the previous 6.0 litre turbocharged W12 engine offered in the last Continental GT, but with very little difference in high-end speed, the new engine offers 40 per cent better fuel efficiency according to Bentley. Perfect for driving with the heightened fuel prices you see today. First released in 2003, the Continental GT, essentially a VW Phaeton, was supplied with a 6.0 turbocharged W12, capable of 196mph thanks to the 552bhp. Many celebrities and footballers bought the first generation of the Continental, which gave it a bit of a bad reputation, however this new model has had a face lift, and a revised engine platform and is aimed at those with a slightly more understated, subtle taste. The new engine will soon

migrate to the convertible, the GTC and possibly into the four door saloon, the Flying Spur. Anyone struggling through the Munich rush hour would have seen the bright red Bentley taking a dramatic short-cut, suspended beneath a helicopter, to beat the traffic jams and arrive at a speciallydesigned podium at the summit of a high rise complex close to Munich’s city centre. The fashionable SkyLounge – positioned in a glazed bridge between two skyscrapers – was the venue for an exclusive Bentley Continental V8 launch party for 300 VIP guests. Klaus Becker, General Manager of Bentley Munich, who organised the showstopping helicopter stunt said: “A dramatic car got the debut we felt it deserved and we took a little bit of our inspiration from Bentley’s iconic ‘Winged B’ emblem. On a practical level the helicopter was the fastest way to get to the rooftop podium.” Do you think the stunt was over the top? Or do you think it was a perfect way to show off the new Bentley? I would have loved to have been part of it, and think that the whole stunt was cleverly executed, leading to a great launch party. Next stop, Horsham? Though where would we put it… the top of The Resident’s office perhaps?

ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE Having spent 25 years training budding young stars Julia Martin is now teaching her methods to adults. She tells James Hood how the techniques used in a drama class could help you shine in any situation If you knew there was a class you could attend that would teach you how to present well and without fear, speak clearly, stand confidently, handle conflict and read people’s body language, would you take it? Well, chances are you already have – back in your youth as part of drama class in school. The problem is that for most of us at the age of 11, Romeo and Juliet tends to go in one ear and out the other. Fortunately, one Sussex-based drama coach is teaching adults the tricks of the stage all over again, with the sole aim of improving their lives by making them more confident, assertive and ultimately, successful. Julia Martin has been training and nurturing talented young people on stage for more than 25 years through schools and her company, Dramaworks. Now, she has formed Persona, a business through which she is helping grown ups and professionals with personal development using workshops and individual coaching. Areas covered by Persona include teamwork, managing change, presentation skills and conflict resolution among others. Julia said: “You would be amazed by how the secrets of successful theatre performance can be applied to every day life. But people shouldn’t be put off by the thought of standing in a theatre reciting Shakespeare. This is much more about adapting skills that I teach to actors and performers and implementing them in a more professional, often corporate environment. I also combine the techniques with much of the psychology and neuro lingustic theory I have learnt.” One of the most popular services Julia can provide as part of Persona is to help people with presenting – a handy tool for those who have become exasperated by PowerPoint. “Training has become so monotonous in a corporate environment that people are a bit immune to the traditional methods of presenting. It’s no long effective to have one person talk about a bunch of slides for hours on end. I work with people to give them more presence in a room of people, to be confident having an audience and how to command their attention”, Julia told The Resident.

Conflict resolution is another common area of concern for clients of Persona. Julia says that methods used by actors can help people in a corporate environment to come to an agreement or triumph in a negotiation situation. She added: “Tone of voice, body language and taking a step back out of a situation to give yourself time to think and reflect can give you an advantage over another person. Incidentally, it’s also something I have been training actors to do in order to grasp a new role or character for years. Another important method is that of acknowledging and identifying a persona. Many of us have different personas at work or at home. Embracing those can mean the difference between success or failure.” Julia believes that body language is something that can transcend the theatre into all areas of life and that Persona can help people respond to or acknowledge body language as well as making an effort to actively listen. She said: “Body language is so important in life. It’s a two-way thing. You can learn to read the body language of others, but you can also work on your own because it can affect the way people treat us and react to us. Something as simple as standing up straight when you enter a room can make a world of difference to a person.” So too, apparently can positive thinking – something else which Julia can help her clients with. She added: “When I help people cope with change for example, I often get them to think about the positive side to a change, whether that is redundancy or a new boss. Getting people to think about things that are out of their control in a more positive way is powerful.” All of the skills Julia can help people with have the potential to be powerful and improve people’s attitudes and behaviour at work or home. The coach added: “It is wonderful to see the difference these techniques can make to an individual. It’s not about being an extrovert, or even wanting to perform. Persona helps people use the attributes they already have and channel them so they become more effective, professional and successful. e recently refurbished part of the downstairs of our own home – it makes a change actually working on my home instead of someone else’s. Part of the renovation included our study, and I have to be honest it had become a bit of a dumping ground and I was finding it extremely difficult to concentrate while working in it. This was a good time to really sort through everything. I started by taking some shredding sacks from a local secure shredding company. They give you as many sacks as you want and then come back to retrieve them at a cost of just £5.00 a sack, and you don’t have the worry of personal information being used by unscrupulous people. So sacks, at the ready, we went through file after file to get rid of as much paper as we could. Several sacks later, that part of the exercise was over. I don’t know about you, but we love to read in our household and have accumulated so many books over the years, but now was the time to be strong and get rid – I could not and would not throw a book away, however you can give them to the charity shops, or use swapping services online, or in my case they all went to school ready for the school fete in the Summer. My favourite books were given a home in the study – there are some I could not bear to part with! We invested in some tall cabinets to keep files in, along with a filing cabinet, and a cupboard to keep all the paper, envelopes and other bits and pieces, which can look a mess, so it’s nice to have them all behind closed doors away from sight. Having gone through the process myself this got me thinking – there are so many people out there surrounded by clutter, and not knowing where to start on the journey to a clutter free life. Feng shui practitioners believe that clutter drains energy from you. Depending on the Feng shui area of your home where your clutter is located, it can also negatively influence, or even completely block, the flow of events in specific areas of your life. So it really can be of benefit to both you and (if like me you work from home) your business, to rid yourself of the clutter. To that end, here’s how you can get started with de-cluttering your home, and thus, your life. Sort what’s sentimental We very often hold on to things for emotional reasons, but do we really need to keep every birthday card, postcard, magazine we have received in the last few years? Sort in sunshine Choose a day when the weather is fine, and move everything out of the room you are de-cluttering and take it outside. I find it is always more invigorating to work in the fresh air rather than staying indoors. Sort into sections Sort your clutter into three piles – one for taking to the local tip, one for either donating to a charity shop or for selling on-line and the third for all the items you want to keep. Be firm with yourself - if you haven’t used something for the last twelve months the chances are you never will, so get rid of it. With the ‘donate or sell’ pile – you must immediately deliver everything earmarked for the charity shop (do not be tempted to let it back in the house). Photograph everything to be sold on-line and get it on there – you will be surprised how much money this can make. Now work on the ‘keep’ pile. Decide if it will

go back in the same room. Perhaps have some labelled boxes on one side in which you can place items for different rooms. Once all the clutter has gone, you can organise your room. For a fresh look perhaps re-arrange the furniture. I moved the position of my desk, before it faced a wall, now it looks out across the garden, which I find much more pleasant. I also added a bright wallpaper to one wall, which brightens the room and helps me feel more creative. Make sure you have enough storage for the items that are coming back to the room – you don’t want to re-clutter the room. Decluttering your home or workplace can be so therapeutic. e’ve all been there, head in hands, slumped at the kitchen table surrounded by estate agents’ particulars (or flicking through the Property section of The Resident Magazine) with the dream of that perfect home more distant than ever. During any lull in your enthusiasm, you may start to question why you’re moving in the first place; an additional bedroom to pack the kids’ Wii away, a bigger kitchen to finally have all the family over for Christmas or just a change after 20 years. Well, the good news is that the very home you love and live in has the potential to be your dream home, and when you take the stress and cost of moving, not to mention the dreaded Stamp Duty, the dream may be more attainable that you think. An extension isn’t always the right answer to achieving your dream. A series of small rooms, some of which you may never even go in to, can be a poor use of valuable square meters and create a feeling of restricted space. Remodelling this underutilised space can create wonderful rooms from luxurious master bedroom suites to glorious kitchen-come-dining-come-family rooms. A key element to creating a feeling of space without increasing the physical space is getting the plan to work really hard for you, by creating definition through utility whist at the same time creating a physical and visual flow between the spaces. Another key element to a sense of space is light, ideally natural, but don’t underestimate the power of manmade sources. This can be achieved by removing solid external walls and replacing them with full height openable glazing or elevating ceilings into roof voids with the addition of roof windows, both of which will bring light and life into the darkest reaches of a room to lift any soul. Don’t forget that the garden is a room too, albeit external and subject to the ravages of the British weather, and it can be used to add to the sense of space by blurring the lines between the inside and out and drawing your eye out further than the traditional boundary of a room.

It might be the case that to accentuate the power of any remodelling works an extension is needed, or that the existing space is so restrictive that the only way is to push out, up or down to create more physical space. The new site, which also doubles as a showcase of their work, is a testament to the success of the business, and the popularity of the kitchens, which are all personally made by Jasper and Max Middleton. “There’s a distinct look and feel to what we do”, Jasper, who set up the business, told The Resident. “We create kitchens using authentic wood and materials, some of which might be reclaimed or collected from salvaged pieces of furniture and doors. ellmans Auctioneers and Valuers was established in 1989. Seven years ago, passionate auctioneer and television personality Jonathan Pratt took over the reigns as a director of the business. He has spent that time expanding the site at which customers come from far and wide to auction off or buy household items and furniture. It’s an industry he is passionate about and one he wanted to be a part of since watching Lovejoy at the age of 11. “I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do for a job. But my mother always had a love of nice furniture and design. Plus I watched Lovejoy and thoroughly enjoyed it. So when the time came for me to fill out that careers form or application, I decided on an arts surveyor course. I used to get such pleasure from valuing something, and seeing it sell. As I started moving into the antiques trade I developed a real love for the industry. It’s wonderful to meet new and interesting people all the time. It can be a sensitive time for people as well, if they have just lost a loved one.” It wasn’t long before TV beckoned for the charismatic auctioneer. He has become a regular and rather popular presenter and adviser on the BBC’s Bargain Hunt and the Antique’s Road Show spin-off, The Antiques Road Trip, shown in the daytime. The TV personality says what he hopes the exposure does is show people that there is nothing to be concerned about when going to an auction. He said: “People think you need to be a seasoned bidder or professional buyer to come to an auction. But you don’t. And you don’t need to know anything! Most people don’t realise that buying at auction is investing, and can be a good investment. It is not only antique furniture (which is good value at the moment) but there is also modern furniture, sofa’s, dining and kitchen furniture, pictures and prints not to mention jewellery. And the result is a unique look.” Here Jonathan gives The Resident Magazine his five top tips for buying at an auction: 1. Visit your local saleroom and view their sales regularly. Then you will find out what you like and get an idea of prices. 2. Sign up to the auction house e-mail service. They will remind you when the sale is ready to view, and you will be able to look at their website with photo’s of the lots before you go. 3. Research. Find out what the alternatives would cost. 4. Get a condition report. It is free and often written. It will point out any faults that the untrained eye will miss and give you security with your purchase, otherwise Caveat Emptor. 5. Set your maximum price. There will always be another. If you don’t get it, go one more bid next time, but always with a condition report. Happy hunting. here is a large shop and café hidden along a quiet street in Arundel, inspired by the homeware stores of America and loft-style living of New York, where its owners go frequently on buying trips. There you will find shelves packed high with everything from kitchen utensils (in all colours of the rainbow) to greetings cards, luxury toiletries, jewellery, gifts and seasonal goods. And all spread across two floors of a charismatic converted warehouse. It’s innovative, it’s unlike anything else this side of London, it’s fun, and it was the brainwave of co-owner, Holly, who conceived the idea while still working in a corporate environment in London. “I wanted to do something other than simply be part of the 9 to 5 rat race. I had a dream of opening a shop here with beautiful products for gifts or for the home. I pictured myself taking money in a tin from the odd customer and reading books all day. So I found the premises, which was originally just the ground floor, and it was instantly a hit. There was no time to read! Its success has been a surprise even to my own father, who originally said ‘don’t fix anything to the walls’. But people seem to have a fondness for Sparks Yard. They come from far and wide.” Within one year, Sparks Yard took over the first floor of the building as people flocked from not just Arundel but across the south and down from London for the wide range of gifts and goods on offer. The coffee bar soon followed, and offers teas coffees, pastries and has a pantry section beside it selling a range of popular American household names you might recognise, including Lucky Charms cereal, Pop Tarts, Oreos and Skippy peanut butter. There’s definitely a bit of an American theme going on there too. “We love the US and have always liked shops such as Crate and Barrel and Williams-Sanoma. We often go across to get ideas and find out what people are buying and see what the trends are”, said Holly. As well as the products, Sparks Yard’s customer service stems from an American philosophy too – that the customer is king. Personal trainer Daniel Forster has designed a simple, no-excuses plan to help you look and feel your best without setting foot inside a gym, just in time for summer

o it’s March and you started the year with all the good intentions to get that svelte body as a new year’s resolution. But what happened? You planned to get in shape back in January (sound familiar?) but after a month or so you packed it in. Now your belly resembles a beach ball, you still have those bingo wings, the energy levels haven’t returned, you still feel sluggish and disheartened and nothing has really changed since that Christmas dinner! “What can I do?” I hear you cry. Fear not - I have a plan. Over the next couple of pages I am going to give you a few tips to get back on track, ready for the summer months. My easy-to-follow exercise plan and some nutritional ideas will get you looking and feeling great. Over the last five years I have been training a diverse range of clients from children right up to the 70 plus age group and I have found that everyone is different. Every individual is motivated in a unique way and one of the most important things I have observed is diet. Ever get confused by all of the weight loss diets out there? Low carb, low fat, high-protein, high-fibre, detox diet… it’s all too confusing to start from scratch with each contradicting another. Dieting should be seen as a lifestyle change and be simple. A realistic plan that you can stick to which means you don’t feel hungry, as though you are starving yourself. That old cliché “I’m going to start my diet tomorrow” should never be used or put into practice because if it’s simple you are more likely to stick to it and be consistent. Weight loss comes down to a simple calculation calories in, calories out. Creating a calorie deficit with a combination of healthy eating and an exercise plan. Use the lists below to form your healthy eating plan. Always try to opt for whole foods and go organic when possible. Try to eat three meals and two snacks each day. If necessary you can add a third snack. Space out each meal/snack three hours apart.

Eat 130 -170g lean serving of the following with each meal. Preparation should be grilled, steamed, baked or stir-fried. Avoid fried or breaded foods. • Fish • Pork • Steak • Turkey breast • Chicken breast • 2–3 eggs Try to limit dairy as much as possible. Eat and drink as much of the following as you like: • Water • Any green leafy vegetable • Spinach • Broccoli • Green red or yellow peppers • Cucumbers • Apples • Asparagus

• Cauliflower • Green beans • Kale • Celery 2-4 servings of the following throughout the day: • Oranges • Plums • Peaches • Cherries • Berries • Bananas • Carrots Mostly all fresh fruit snacks between meals: • Almonds • Walnuts • Cashews • Natural peanut butter (no sugar, no salt added) • Yogurt • Low-fat cottage cheese • Low-fat milk Try to limit the nuts to 50g if trying to lose weight. Eat the following only after you have been doing exercise training: • Oatmeal • Brown rice • Legumes • Potatoes • Whole wheat bread • Whole wheat pasta • Other whole grain food items If you are trying to lose weight these are just good sources of energy to take on when you want to be burning those fat stores. Try to stay away from: • Salad dressing • Butter • Cheese • Other condiments Make sure you stay away at all cost from: • White carbohydrates • Sugar • Salad dressings • Fast food • Alcohol • Soft drinks (cola, lemonade etc) In an ideal world, weight loss should be approximately 2lbs per week. If this doesn’t happen, try removing one of your daily snack allowances. On the flip side, if you are losing more than 2lbs per week you should try to add a third snack. Drinking a glass of water before and after meals to keep your body properly hydrated is also advisable. If you tend to drink a lot of tea and coffee think about replacing it with green tea when possible. This plan is for recommendation only from my experience in the fitness industry. Always seek medical advice from a trained physician before diving straight into diets and exercise plans.

THE TRAINING PLAN beginner PHA (Peripheral Heart Action) training is an intense form of circuit training, in which you group together exercises for the upper body followed with a lower body exercise. This promotes blood movement to the arms and legs.

1. Prisoner Squat

This workout is great if you are pushed for time. It works really well because the heart rate has to work even harder because you are pumping blood to the lower body then you proceed to push it into the upper body and repeat. Doing this increases your BMR (Basel Metabolic Rate) so when you are going through your daily tasks you will be burning more calories because of a faster metabolism. It would look something like this: 1. Prisoner Squat 15-20 reps 2. Press up 10-20 reps 3. Alternating lunge 16-20 reps 4. Chair dips 15-20

Interval work Run/sprint 20 seconds walk 10 seconds x 4 Repeat the whole circuit 3 times. Beginners should take 1 minute between exercises, as you become fitter you will lower the rest time to hardly anything, complete one circuit. Take 1-2 minutes break then repeat. You can do the circuit at home or in the park using a chair or bench for the lunge and dips.

THE CALORIEintermediate BLASTER What you will need Just enough space to move, no gym! Time of workout: 30 minutes Calories burnt: 550 This workout switches between high intensity and cardiovascular exercises to work every muscle in your body while burning lots of fat. Swapping between high and low intensity moves in the circuit can significantly raise the body’s metabolic rate for hours after working out. The explosive cardio exercises also train fast twitch fibres in your muscles, designed to develop maximum output and speed. Warm up Jog for five minutes (if you’re going to the beach or park to do the circuit, just getting there can be a warm up). This will get the blood pumping oxygen and nutrients to your muscles. Do the following exercises in order with no rest between stations. Squat thrusts: 30 reps Assume the press up position. With straight arms and keeping your knees together, jump your legs in so your knees are between your arms. Drive your legs back to the starting position. You know it’s working when your quads (front of legs) glutes (bum) and hamstrings (back of legs) are powering the move and your upper body works hard to stabilise your body. Sumo squat: 30 reps Place your feet twice shoulder width apart and lower until your thighs are level with the ground. Hold in that position for two seconds then drive up again. You know it’s working when your core keeps your posture upright while your quads fight to hold the deep stance. Mountain climber: 20 reps each leg Assume the press up position with straight arms. Bring one leg underneath you before driving it back again while bringing the other leg into your chest, and carry on alternating legs keep shoulders level without pausing between reps. T-press up: 15 each side Assume the press up position with your body in a straight line from head to toe. Do a full press up, return to the top and bring one hand up to the sky. Press up and rotate to the other side and bring the opposing hand up to the sky. You know it’s working when your core is feeling the strain and it can be felt in your chest and back of the arms. This is one of the harder moves so ease your self into it. Two footed leap forward and back: 15 reps Stand with feet and knees shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent. Brace your abs and swing your arms straight out behind whilst dropping into a half squat. Then explode upwards and as far forward as you can. Jump back to the starting position and repeat. Try and be in constant motion forwards and backwards. Dorsal raise swim: 15 reps Lie face down holding your arms and legs just off the floor. Lift your right arm and left leg higher and hold for 2 seconds. Lower both and then lift your left arm and right leg. You know it’s working when you feel your hamstrings and lower back working together as your core is braced to activate the move. Tuck jumps: 20 reps Stand with your feet slightly inside shoulder width. Bend your knees and lower your body down into a half squat. Explode into the air and bring your knees up to your chest in a tucked position. Land with your knees bent and jump again. Finish: Aim to complete the circuit twice, resting one to two minutes between circuits. Finish on a slow jog to a walk to bring your heart rate down. Make sure you stretch all major body parts at the end of the session. The creeks of Chichester Harbour stretch inland like searching fingers, reaching up from the Solent towards the city – and, just out of their reach, the city itself sits comfortably in a cosy spot between the coast and the South Downs. Nestling south of the River Lavant, a ‘winterbourne’ which runs from the Downs and makes its way down through the city along hidden underground culverts. It’s a lovely place for a city to be. And it’s a lovely place to live, too. It wasn’t always called Chichester – back in Roman times it went by the impressive name of Noviomagus Reginorum (a bit of a mouthful) and was presided over by one Tiberius Claudius Cogidubnus, who probably lived in what is now known as Fishbourne Roman Palace (well worth a visit). Chichester was renamed in the fifth century, after Cissa, the son of a Saxon King, who claimed the place as the chief city of the Kingdom of the South Saxons. I’m glad the name changed – telling the family that you are ‘just popping into Noviomagus Reginorum to do a spot of shopping’ wouldn’t really feel quite right. I’ve lived in and around the chief city of the Kingdom of the South Saxons for most of my life and I’ve brought up my three children here, too. I love the place! Architecturally, it’s a delight: let’s start at the market cross, which stands pretty much at the heart of the city. This intricate stone structure is a typical sixteenth-century example of what is called, delightfully, a ‘Buttercross’. This one was built in 1501 as a sort of covered market place, and it stands at the intersection of the four main streets – East, West, North and South Street. Looking at it today, it’s easy to imagine it teeming with noisy market-goers in ruffs and doublets, farthingales and petticoats, even though these days it’s far more likely to be peopled with tired shoppers and BlackBerry-toting teens. It’s very much the place for Cicestrians (as we Chichester dwellers are called) to arrange to meet. A stone’s throw from the Cross is the eleventh century Cathedral. It might be small, but it boasts a raft of wonderful things to see: a carefully renovated patch of Roman mosaic pavement (visible through a glass panel in the cathedral floor); a stained glass window designed by Marc Chagall; a small but impressive Graham Sutherland painting, and of course the extraordinary, vivid, John Piper tapestry, which you can see through the rood-screen as you first step inside the building. There’s something magical to me, about seeing such a brash, brightly-coloured, exuberant piece of art, in such ancient and austere surroundings. One other unusual feature to check out is the bell tower, which is (I think) unique in being a totally separate structure from the main cathedral. Now clad from top to toe in a sort of architectural version of a hairnet, in order to keep passers by safe from crumbling rubble, it’s an imposing sight. 119

Of course the main shopping streets are lined with all the familiar shop-fronts - it’s a great place to shop, in fact – but take the time to stop and look upwards, and you’ll see a wonderful undulating roofscape, a higgledypiggledy hotch-potch of Georgian and Victorian buildings jostling together above all the plate glass and the acrylic shop-signage. The little side roads which lead off from the main four streets are worth exploring, too. Things to see and do. For a tiny city – and Chichester is indeed a city of very small proportions – there really is an impressive amount to do. The Chichester Festival Theatre, up at the top end of town, is one of the most prestigious of the regional theatres in the country. It’s a seasonal theatre – many shows begin here before transferring to the West End or Broadway, and we locals often feel rather smug knowing that we’ve seen plays before they become big hits! The Pallant House Gallery, tucked away in the North Pallant off East Street, boasts an impressive array of permanent works of art, and also hosts major temporary exhibitions (currently one of these is ‘David Dawson – Working With Lucien Freud’). There’s more than one way to watch films in Chichester. If you like the big multi-screen experience, with popcorn and coke and all the trimmings, then the Cineworld at the Chichester Gate Leisure Leisure Park is ideal, but for those who perhaps prefer a more modest evening out, the Chichester Cinema at New Park is small but perfectly formed. (Every year, it hosts the Chichester Film Festival – an eighteen-day feast of delight for film buffs) It’s tea and scones here, rather than popcorn and fizz. For a city, Chichester is geographically small: you can walk from one end to another without being too badly out of breath. Architecturally, it’s just gorgeous. There are things to do for people of all ages, and pretty much within spitting distance, is the glorious, newly designated National Park of the South Downs. I’m not sure what more you could ask for in a place to live. Biased? Yeah, I reckon I am – but I’m more than happy to be so.

Having crooked teeth can be embarrassing, even debilitating. As an adult, you may think it’s too late to correct your smile, but it’s not. Once considered unfortunate, crooked or erupting teeth have become an embarrassment and an issue for many - and one which potentially interferes with lifestyle and career choices. So what can be achieved today and is it affordable? More and more adults are looking at cosmetic solutions to improve their smile: from tooth whitening, veneers and now a growing popularity in adult braces. We are catching up with the Americans and we want to have a perfect smile too.

We spoke to Dental Surgeon Dr Vatsal Amin at The Carfax Dental Practice to find out about what new treatments are available today. Dr Amin is a private dentist and Principal at the practice, with a special interest in cosmetic dentistry. Dr Amin says: “As a cosmetic dentist with more than 20 years experience, the new ‘six month smile’ treatment is one of the most exciting new advancements in dentistry today. It allows us to treat adults with crooked or displaced teeth and correct their smile quickly and effectively. It is one of most rewarding and life-changing treatments I can offer a patient who is so self conscious of their teeth, they might otherwise spend a lifetime trying to hide their smile. It’s not uncommon for patients who feel debilitated by their smile to use methods of disguise to distract from their mouth and teeth. It could be they choose to wear a hat, hide behind glasses or a hair style. looked into options to correct it. “I wasn’t really a good candidate for traditional orthodontics and at 19 already, I didn’t want to wear metal braces, just close the gap. The six month smile treatment was the best option. People didn’t even notice I was wearing a brace, I would have to lift my lip to show them and treatment was finished in just 4 and a half months. It was quick, fast and painless”. The treatment involves an initial casting of your teeth, from which a clear brace is made specifically for the individual. “The brace is fixed for the duration of the treatment and is almost invisible”, says Dr Amin, “which is much more acceptable to adults. We can show you pictures of how a clear brace looks on adults, so you can see for yourself how unobtrusive it is.” “One of the main differences between traditional orthodontics and ‘the six month smile’ technique”, says Dr Amin, “ is that we are cosmetically adjusting the shape and appearance of the natural adult teeth, without aligning the bite which can otherwise take years to achieve. Most adult patients do not want to wear metal braces for 2 years or more - resulting in many people to believe they have missed the boat and there is nothing that can be done, or the only other alternative is expensive veneers. That used to be the main option, but with the new ‘six month smile’ treatment your natural teeth can normally be realigned with monthly adjustments within a window of 4-9 months, with an average of just 6 months. The results can be very dramatic, and in some cases the orthodontic treatment not only corrects the teeth, but also softens the face if teeth have been causing the mouth to slightly distort to accommodate protruding teeth.”

Debra Freidhaber was 50 when she decided to have her teeth corrected. “At my stage of life, I didn’t want to wear conventional braces, I just wanted straight teeth”, says Debra.
