Olde Sweet Shoppe
Visiting Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe in the centre of Chichester is just like travelling back in time to a yesteryear when traditional sweet emporiums were shops packed with jars of colourful bon bons and more than 500 other varieties of sweets, all designed to delight customers of all ages! Mr Simms traditional confectionary shop at 19a South Street is close to the famous historical Cross and only a stones throw from Chichester Cathedral. The shelves are filled to over-flowing with every conceivable variety of fudge, sweets, lollipops, liquorice, candy sticks and chocolates you could possibly imagine available in one store. Those of you who will always associate pick ‘n’ mix with a Woolies counter, are really in for a major treat at Mr Simms. The shop has a large glass counter area packed with all the old pick ‘n’ mix favourites like Love Hearts and Cola Bottles, while behind the counter, the entire wall area is set aside for over 250 display jars of more traditional sweets from Lemon Crystals to Barley Twists. Mr Simms also stocks a vast array of retro sweets like Refreshers, Frys Chocolate bars and Fizzwizz, which have been almost impossible to locate at the ‘corner shop’ in recent years.
Also available are a wide range of American sweets including Nerds, Fluff, Lucky Charms and Wonker Bars. Additionally a range of Wedding favours, party bags, retro and luxury hampers are also stocked. At the more luxury end of the scale, you will also find displays of Mr Simm’s own brand of chocolate bars and fudges. For those with diabetic issues, Mr Simms also stocks an extensive sugar-free range of chocolate bars, confectionary, liquorice, jelly sweets and mints, together with an extensive range of gluten-free sweets. So if you fancy a never to be forgotten walk down memory lane, then take a trip down to Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe in South Street and be guaranteed a really warm and memorable welcome!

pril marks the first anniversary of The Resident Magazine. That’s no small feat given the current economic climate and we are extremely grateful to every reader and advertiser who has supported us over the past 12 months. One year on and my personal aim remains the same: Enrich your life in Sussex one page at a time. To celebrate our birthday, we asked Sussex-based artist Matt Bodimeade to paint this month’s very special cover. Matt, who was born and bred in Arundel, has captured what we’re all about in a single painting - the best our beautiful county has to offer with a contemporary twist, and we’re really grateful to him for taking the time. You can see more of his work and read his story on page 38. Speaking of paintings, there are plenty more on page 72 in our feature on art for weddings. Consultant Lydia Swinton explains why art makes the perfect gift for newlyweds. And that’s just the beginning of what has turned
into a wedding special - we’ve also included jewellery perfect for a big proposal or brides and their wedding party. There’s even a honeymoon section with information on some blissful postnuptial breaks. If you worry a lot, have a read of our feature on banishing anxiety from your life for good. We consulted two experts on the matter who say it’s a pointless emotion and one that can be tackled with a few simple steps. Maybe it’s your work, maybe your health or maybe it’s simply wondering if you left the oven on. These top tips will help you combat the feeling that all is not well. And on page 56, Catherine Ross writes about her session with an organisation extraordinaire. In just two hours the expert helped the working mum to ‘get it together’, at both work and in her daily life. Read how she got on for some really great tips on living a more composed, stressfree life - giving you more time to read The Resident Magazine.

Money to burn...? If not, try logs! Gas, electricity and oil prices are soaring, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be feeling warm inside. Not if you own a woodburning stove or central heating cooker, that is. Furthermore, burning logs in our high efficiency stoves and cookers is environmentally friendly and carbon neutral.

PIONEERING RETIREMENT VILLAGE still delivering 30 years on
ELMBRIDGE VILLAGE IS AN ESTABLISHED RETIREMENT COMMUNITY OFFERING EXTENSIVE LEISURE FACILITIES, WELL DESIGNED HOMES AND A FLOURISHING SOCIAL SCENE Elmbridge Village has the honour of being the grandmother of Retirement Villages, not just within the company but across the UK. The village, on the fringes of Cranleigh, Surrey, celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2011. But thanks to the vision of founder Ray Brown it remains as relevant now as it was then. Now president of Retirement Villages Ltd, he spotted the potential of the concept having seen its popularity in the United States. He returned with the vision of recreating a similar community albeit tweaked for the UK market. Work started on Elmbridge Village in 1981. Some of the buildings from Elmbridge Village’s former incarnation as a Second World War education camp and then a boarding school were retained. Other parts of the site were transformed with the addition of bungalows and apartment buildings. The first residents moved in soon after and, in May 1984, the village was officially opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra who, 24 years later, opened the company’s Roseland Parc village in Cornwall. Since those early days the village has enjoyed its place at the heart of the company, a blueprint not only for Retirement Villages Ltd but also for other developers moving into the market. There are still a handful of residents at the village who moved in as Elmbridge Village opened. They have seen the village grow organically, shaped by them and their ideas. “Elmbridge Village works so well because it is an established community and has all the benefits that brings,” said Simon Baird,
the Village Manager. “Neighbours aren’t just neighbours they are friends. Interest groups, outings and events have become part of the calendar because that’s what those who live here like to do and share with each other.” The village has also enjoyed a long relationship with the wider community in Cranleigh and beyond. The village choir regularly sings at local residential homes; students from a nearby Japanese boarding school have spent time at the village practicing their English; performers and speakers regularly call at the village. “Like any neighbourhood, Elmbridge Village and its residents are an integral part of Surrey life,” said Simon. The community spirit is helped by the facilities Elmbridge Village boasts. There is a large village hall complete with stage, perfect for performances, meetings and activities. A small general store provides day to day supplies while the library, snooker room and restaurant are available for residents and their guests. Outside there is a meadow, croquet lawn and allotments, all crossed by paths and dotted with seats. All of these are looked after by a team of village staff, under Simon’s watchful eye. “It’s the variety of the lifestyle that appeals to many people who choose to live here,” said Simon. “Residents have the option to get involved in the busy calendar of social events if they wish. Equally they can enjoy the comfort and peace of their individual property, or get involved in the wider community.” Indeed, life at Elmbridge Village can be what each individual wants it to be.

Products that really work!
There was an “inevitability” that Matt Bodimeade would be an artist, he told The Resident Magazine. His father was an artist, his mother an art teacher and his two elder bothers are also accomplished painters. He said: “Art is innately a part of me. I’ve always been around creative people and their work and I have memories of my dad in his studio painting. So it was never a conscious decision. It was our way of life.” Matt’s mother was also instrumental in establishing the Arundel Gallery Trail, which both Matt and his brothers took part in during the early period of their careers. Having been born and raised in Arundel, Matt also works as a landscape gardener and has been paying attention to the landscapes of Sussex that inspire his work today since he was a young boy. It was his history with the local area and the combination of his contemporary interpretations of century-old landscapes that made him the perfect choice for The Resident Magazine’s first anniversary cover. Matt’s early work was mostly sculpture, after a teacher recommended he try it. “I attended a foundation level art course at Worthing College, which is now Northbrook. One of the teachers suggested I try sculpture, noticing I had trouble with little brushes and intricate details. So I enrolled in a degree programme in sculpture design at Brighton Poly.” Soon after, Matt was acknowledged for his skills by a commission from the CASS Sculpture Foundation - an organisation established 25 years ago that hosts a sculpture park in the Goodwood estate. He found an equally expressive avenue for his creativity in drawing, around the age of 30, inspired by the South Downs where he will go to work. He said: “I would look out over the landscapes and think to myself ‘I should be drawing this.’” Averse to many of the finer details and techniques used by other artists, Matt has a unique and
individual style of drawing, building up layers of colour to cover the form of the landscape and then scraping off, creating a combination of abstract and realism inspired by the scenes. He draws on paper using mostly oil pastels or a graphite pencil in what he describes as “layers and layers of indecision.” He added: “Drawing gives me freedom and possession of the landscape. I don’t have to stick to what I can see. I can create whatever I want. There are constraints when I design a sculpture, and there are also constraints in my day job as a landscaper. But when I draw I have utter freedom. I also love the landscapes of West Sussex. I enjoy painting the slopes, watching the shapes. It’s incredibly rich here for inspiration. It’s quite a suppressed landscape in a sense as much of it has been changed by man and played around with. But I enjoy the rivers, the houses the sections of land.” The result of Matt’s ‘indecision’ are beautiful drawings. Often using earthy colours of greens, yellows and blues sometimes contrasted with the harshest of red skies. He added: “My work is getting more colourful – as I get older and dafter. And I do have a real love for it. I can’t work on demand. I have to be compelled to draw something. Fortunately I have that option – I’m not doing it to buy the groceries. Which I think lends itself to more artistic freedom.” Matt regularly exhibits his pieces and works closely with the Zimmer Stewart Gallery in Arundel, which has housed much of his work. Owner James Stewart said: “Matt has integrity, ability and there’s a quality to his work, the likes of which I rarely see. It’s the reason I like to work with him and display what he does at the gallery. The next exhibition by Matt Bodimeade will be held at the Zimmer Stewart Gallery from 11 August to 8 September – just a week before the famous Arundel Festival. Many believe the book has come to a dramatic conclusion. But James Hood discovers digital devices, instant downloads and electronic literature are just the next chapter of the story
In March, Encyclopaedia Britannica announced it would be printing its last paper copy of the series of factual books after more than 240 years. The company will continue to make the books available online. It’s one of the first high-profile examples of how the might of a digital generation is taking over more traditional methods of buying and reading books. So what is the future for the beloved book? Are we coming to the end of an era of paperbacks and piles of novels stacked by the bed, or relaxing in the bath with an old copy of Wuthering Heights? Author Terry Deary, who has had 150 novels published, thinks there is only one way for the sale of paper books to go. He told The Resident Magazine: “Books as we know them today will soon become the vinyl record of the publishing industry. We will think of them fondly, and many of us will read them. We will display them in our homes and love them just as much. But the e-book is the future. Traditional books cannot compete with the option to download as many as you want onto one device and carry them in your bag, on a plane, train or to the beach. It’s an exciting time and an unavoidable reality, but the great shame is that many big publishers have been slow to realise this and embrace it. I have seen such complacency and a reluctance to adapt to the needs of readers, that it could mean they simply won’t survive.” So for someone who has been a writer for his entire career, is it a shame that the book may have turned its final page? “I think it’s a wonderful development. The idea that you can download books in an instant and take hundreds or even thousands away with you is terrific. It might seem like a nice way to read and people get quite nostalgic about books, but young children are using technologies such as the iPad and other tablets to access information. Soon, they will know no different.” For Catherine Ross, a communications consultant from Horsham and an avid reader, the paper book remains part of her life. She said: “I love a paperback book. I don’t really enjoy reading from a screen and even at work I will often print things I need to read. I quite like having a stack of books ready to go and on display in the house. I have two large bookshelves. One has the classics and one has our travel guides and some other trashy
literature. I have complete works of Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams and some Hemingway and Tolstoy. I also think there is nothing nicer than sharing a book with your children. I still have printed copies of stories from my childhood that I will pass on to my own kids. I think travel is the most obvious benefit to an e-book or digital reading device. But I don’t think I will be investing in one anytime soon.” But do we have to accept one or the other? Chris Day is founder of Filament Publishing. Titles published by his company can be made available in both print and digitally, something which he says is about offering choice. “There are many more ways for people to access information now. But we are not losing formats, just gaining them. It’s not a question of the book winning or losing. It’s a case of each individual choosing the way they want to read something. It’s increasing choice. There is a real thirst for information and more ways than ever to receive it. So for an author it’s an exciting time”, Mr Day told The Resident Magazine. “When the first paper back book was published in the early 1900s, everyone thought it was the end of the hard back. But that hasn’t happened. This is simply about choice. And it was only a matter of time really. Because publishing is a 16th century innovation which must operate with a 21st century business model”, he added. “What we are seeing is the evolution of the publishing business. Not the death of it. The pendulum has swung the opposite way. Whereas before the holy grail for an author was to get a publisher, now they can self-publish, and reach their audience instantly. I call them knowledge marketeers.” So if the book has simply morphed into a more flexible, accessible way to read our favourite novels or access information then it isn’t the end after all. And for years to come, those who want to buy a printed copy of a book will be able to do so. We are however entering a new era of reading. Using gadgets that allow us to purchase the latest best seller instantly and at the touch of a button, and to carry countless novels in our luggage without worrying about the weight restrictions on a flight. Just be careful not to drop it in that bath.

DOING THE WRITE THING Martin Read talks to local author Simon Packham about his fifth book and discovers that a love of drama on stage has helped him create compelling stories on the page incidents involving family members, too.” But, there is far more to Simon than being an author. Bitten by the acting bug at school in Brighton with roles in Shakespeare and Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, he graduated in Drama at Manchester University. 20 years as a professional actor followed, appearing in the West End, film and television, working alongside Omar Sharif and Judi Dench. “Instructions were to call her ‘Dame Judi’, but that was not something she instigated. She was just lovely and down to earth, throwing a party for me in her dressing room on the eve of my wedding to Deborah.”
Fiction writer Simon Packham relishes evolving his craft in Horsham. Having recently completed his fourth novel, Simon is now working on another. Simon’s first book The Opposite Bastard - the theatrical term for the prompt corner when located on the other side of the stage - a black comedy with a ludicrous concept delivered in thought provoking, amusing style, earned fulsome praise from literary critics in the national press. Exploration of sometimes uncomfortable topics and their consequences for anti hero characters are favoured themes. From where do the ideas come? “Listening and observing triggers suggestions – and I’ve drawn on
Musical talents secured specialist roles, yet, apart from the uncertainty of the profession, travelling and absences from home palled as the children developed. An engagement for a commercial involved a substantial drive to a Leicester supermarket playing the violin in gypsy attire while another actor ballet danced in a duck costume. Providing commentary on a German variety artist, whose act entailed impaling himself on various weapons, was another bizarre assignment. Then, with his infant daughter at an audition for ‘dad and baby’ roles, Simon was informed that she had the job but he wasn’t suitable as her father. Perhaps this potentially humiliating encounter unwittingly conceived the subject of Simon’s third book, The Bex Factor, dealing with the contemporary theme
of disappointment and manipulation at the hands of reality show spin doctors, and the effect this has on the private lives of contestants and their challenged families. A gripping read examining serious issues, but in a hilarious, concerning way. That was preceded by Comin 2 Gt U, a teen fiction thriller charting the transformation of a computer game into life threatening cyber bullying and described by the Bookbag review website as “a great read” and “practically required reading for parents.” Both well-received volumes are now being translated into German and Polish. Encouraged by his father, Maurice, Simon wrote a play at age nine, a specialist task he would like to repeat. Meanwhile he finds time to script productions for local school and amateur societies, especially Christmas shows. These provide acting opportunities, notably with Horsham’s Theatre 48 company – “I do miss the adrenalin of performing live, that was my childhood dream, an ambition echoed by my teenage son, Jon.” Simon and Jon recently shared top billing with great success in Billy Liar at Horsham’s Capitol Theatre. Writing is in the blood: Maurice had six episodes of radio plays broadcast by the BBC and has written for the professional theatre, in addition to editing a variety of publications. Apart from his father’s works, Simon gained great inspiration from the books of George Orwell and Richmal Crompton’s ‘Just William’ stories. “Writing gives me the opportunity to express incisive after thoughts, the sort of clever things that I think of saying in daily situations long after the moment has passed. It also enables me to try to analyse and understand things better.” Writing can be a tough, lonely occupation, similar in that respect to acting, muses Simon. “It needs discipline. I start at 8am in my loft study, switching off the internet to avoid interruptions, and plough on till 4, only taking
a break for a swim to refresh my thoughts. I wouldn’t want to do anything else. It’s great working from home and allowed me to look after my children before they started school.” Considerable research is necessary – and fairly detailed re-writing as plots develop and expand. There is a long gestation period between the initial idea and getting the book published, sometimes as much as two years more than double the writing time. And there is promotional work with talks in schools and libraries. Does writing get any easier? “Not really! I suppose I’m getting better at it and try to concentrate on aspects that intrigue me. Ideas don’t come along more freely, although now I don’t waste time on topics that I don’t think I can write about.” What advice might be given to an aspirant writer? “Keep going. Maintain self-belief and don’t give up – and don’t be too self critical.” What does Simon consider to be his finest achievement? “In acting the pinnacle was probably filming in Spain, so enjoyable. The best writing outcome was seeing my first book in print, the culmination of much hard graft.” June 2012 will herald the release of the next book, Silenced, again set in the fictional West Sussex ‘St Thomas’s Community College’ and keenly awaited by Simon’s growing army of readers. Chris, the central character, lost the power of speech after the death of a friend in a car crash. Increasingly isolated, he seems to be hiding something, but what is his terrifying secret? Although the books are in the teen fiction genre they also complement an adult library. Creative juices are still flowing. Simon Packham is now working on a fifth book to be published by Piccadilly Press in May 2013. Another bold, amusing and imaginative treatment of disturbing issues and family tensions will get readers turning the pages revelling in the humour and anxious to discover how crises are resolved.

THE GIRL NEXT DOOR
She’s a global superstar. She won six Grammys in one night – a feat only ever matched by Beyonce. Her album 21 is said to be in one in four households and it is estimated that on average a copy of the same album was bought every six seconds last year. And as if her year could get any better, Adele has been living right here in Sussex. The superstar has been renting a mansion in a quiet village in an attempt, according to the national press, to escape the London air and be closer to her Brighton-based boyfriend. Her move into the area has been the talk of the town. Residents, pub landlords, staff at the Co-op shop and her next door neighbour have all been excited to say the least about her arrival. Councillor Jonathan Chowen lives in the house next door, and he’s a big fan. He told The Resident Magazine: “It’s been pretty quiet around here. I went for a walk this morning but there was no sign of her. The most I have seen is a few blacked-out Range Rovers. But she is here, renting the house next door. The staff at the Co-op, the local store, have served her and the people of the village are all extremely excited. I am absolutely, a big fan.
It’s incredible to have such a talented, famous neighbour. I am not expecting to see much of her. I expect that when she does spend time here, it will be because it’s peaceful and somewhere she can rest and recuperate. Because of that, there has been no sign of the paparazzi, who are clearly respecting her privacy, along with those who live here.” The star’s rise to fame has been meteoric over the past 12 months, largely helped along by her performance of Someone Like You at the 2011 Brit Awards. The song is taken from her second album 21, named after the age at which she wrote it. The record sold more copies in its first 12 months than any other in history during the same period. It follows a successful first album, called 19. The singer and songwriter has achieved unprecedented success in America and around the world. In February, at the Grammys ceremony, Adele made a successful comeback after having three months off following surgery on her throat. Her performance of Rolling in the Deep was received with a standing ovation from a theatre filled with industry professionals and first-class artists from the world of entertainment. 47

Preheat the oven to 170°C (325°F) Gas 3. Grease and line x 3 20cm/8inch cake tins Put the sugar, eggs and oil in a freestanding electric mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk) and beat until all the ingredients are well incorporated 3. Slowly add the flour, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, salt and vanilla extract and continue to beat until well mixed 4. Stir in the grated carrots and sultanas by hand until they are all evenly dispersed 5. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake tins and smooth over with a palette knife 6. Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and the sponge bounces back when touched 7. Leave the cakes to cool slightly in the tins before turning out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely 8. To make the cream cheese frosting, beat the icing sugar and butter together in a freestanding mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk) on medium-slow speed until the mixture comes together and is well mixed 9. Add the cream cheese in one go and beat until it is completely incorporated 10. Continue beating until the frosting is light and fluffy (for at least 5 minutes) 11. When the cakes are cold, put one on a cake stand and spread about one-quarter of the Cream Cheese Frosting over it with a palette knife 12. PR PRO AND MUM CATHERINE ROSS IS BUSY AND THINGS DON’T ALWAYS GO TO PLAN. IN THE ABSENCE OF A MAGIC WAND, SHE ENLISTS THE HELP OF ORGANISATION EXPERT KATHRYN BILLINGS AND LEARNS HOW TO RESTORE CALM AND ORDER TO HER HOME, FAMILY AND LIFE
Being organised is something I aspire to, but never quite achieve. I would love to be one of those people who files paperwork as soon as it is finished with, who has a place for everything at home and a neatly written to do list for each working day. But I’m not. Instead, I’m that girl who was still desperately finishing her homework on the school bus in the mornings. My son is dropped at preschool just as the teachers are shutting the door and my house, well let’s just say, don’t look too closely. So when I was given the opportunity to meet with Kathryn Billings of Your Lifestyle Managed, I grabbed it with both hands. Kathryn’s business card says she offers a ‘business support and lifestyle management service.’ I got her to take me through some of her top tips for getting organised and then tried them out for two weeks.
EVERY DAY What’s the problem? As a busy, working mum of a two-year-old and a four-yearold, getting out of the house on time in the mornings is a daily challenge. And I know I’m not alone. Lunch boxes and changes of clothes for the kids and dropping them off at their respective childcare all while trying to avoid getting Weetabix on my work clothes is a mission. Tips: Kathryn advised taking the time the previous evening to get as much sorted as possible. Laying out clothes for the day, making up lunch boxes and preparing bags in advance can save time and help things run more smoothly in the morning. Does it work? I’m not sure how much time this saves, but it certainly makes the mornings run more smoothly. With the clothes already laid out, my four-year-old can dress himself and I no longer have arguments with my two-year-old about what she’s going to wear. When it’s time to leave,
I can just grab the bags and go, safe in the knowledge that we all have everything we need for the day ahead.
AT WORK What’s the problem? I find it difficult to stay focussed when I’m working. I’ve always been easily distracted. The rise of social networks does not help. I love Twitter and I find it difficult to ignore the ‘ping’ of an email arriving in my inbox. Tips: It sounds obvious, but every working day needs to start with a To Do list. Kathryn suggested treating myself to five minutes of Twitter for every half hour of work or tick on my list. She also said I should try to focus on one thing at a time and enjoy the satisfaction of crossing tasks off my list. Kathryn also suggested identifying the priority tasks for each working session using the criteria: What brings money in? What will advance my career? What’s most urgent? Does it work? There are few things more satisfying than crossing completed tasks off a list. And seeing the number of crossed out tasks increasing and the remaining things to do reducing is a brilliant motivator. I still struggle to resist the lure of the ping, but my self-discipline is improving.
THE SHOPPING AND COOKING What’s the problem? Like most people, I rotate the same half a dozen meals each week and we all get a bit bored. I try to be a bit more adventurous, but after a day at work, once the kids are in bed, getting creative in the kitchen is a challenge too far. Tips: The meal plan is the holy grail of stress-free dinners. Kathryn recommends taking some time to write a two-week meal plan, use the plan to write a shopping list and then do the shopping online.

Does it work? Yes, oh yes! Not only did we eat a more varied diet, but I saved myself a lot of thinking time trying to decide what to throw together for dinner. Having the ingredients in the house for all of the meals made getting on with cooking much easier and saved me having to pop to the corner shop, which invariably ends up costing more by the time I’ve added a couple of extra bits and pieces to my basket.
Does it work? It’s definitely quicker to tidy up now that everything has its place. And the kids are starting to get the hang of where things belong. The paper is largely contained within our new in-tray system and important dates are on the calendar. Now we just have to get used to looking at the calendar to see what’s coming up.
The online shopping took a while, but searching for voucher codes online saved me an extra £20 on my shop. Shopping from the list meant that I didn’t get drawn into buying things I didn’t need, which probably saved another £30. Having the shopping delivered to the house instead of having to drag my children around the supermarket was priceless.
What’s the problem? Whether it’s car insurance, savings, credit cards or mortgages, many of us are paying more than we need to be simply by staying put instead of shopping around. Tips: Suppliers of financial products rely on customers not wanting the trouble of moving. A quarterly financial healthcheck to compare the products available can help keep on top of budgets and see where savings can be made. Add important dates – such as car insurance renewal dates and credit card offer end dates – to the calendar as a reminder to start shopping for your replacements. Does it work? Yes, if you’re prepared to do the research. There are several websites dedicated to comparing financial products, but it’s important to always read the small print to make sure you know exactly what you’re signing up for. I moved my current account and am £100 better off for it.
DE-CLUTTERING What’s the problem? Piles of paper and children’s toys are my particular clutter bugbears. Tips: Storage is key. It’s a well-worn phrase, but “a place for everything and everything in its place” is the tidy person’s mantra. Make putting children’s toys away as simple as possible by having separate boxes for different categories of toys. Whether divided into vehicles, characters, train set or by Barbies, babies and balls, knowing where everything goes will make tidying up a breeze. With paperwork, Kathryn says the aim should be to “touch each piece of paper once”. All the post can be put into a tray to be sorted through when there’s time to deal with it. Once or twice a week, go through the in-tray. Pay bills, put dates on the calendar and recycle junk mail.

EMPLOYMENT STATISTICS PAINT A BLEAK PICTURE AND IT’S HITTING THE YOUNG HARDEST. HERE WE ASK EXPERTS HOW TEENAGERS OR GRADUATES CAN PREPARE FOR THE NEXT STEP IN THEIR CAREER OR EDUCATION
A
few years ago, it was all about the degree. If you had one, it put you head and shoulders above the competition and it was a sure sign of an employable, hard working, intelligent candidate – an asset. These days, who hasn’t been to university? And with jobs scarce and qualifications flying about the place it can be a matter of potluck whether you get hired. Steve Twinley is pharmaceutical team leader at SLS Recruitment Consultants, in Horsham. The company handles recruitment for jobs in IT, pharmacy and insurance, ranging from graduate to senior roles. He said: “It depends on the role but four years ago, companies were more willing to take on graduates. Now there are fewer jobs and more people on the market so companies are more selective. I find that companies tend to go for experience nowadays. Having a degree is good but having the experience is more desirable - people that go above and beyond just studying. I used to get 30
CVs for a position we advertise. I now get 100. So the CV has to be really good. It’s tougher to get a job as a graduate without experience. A good CV, someone who’s on the ball, has experience and lives locally is very appealing for prospective employers.” Sophia Moir is a budding writer and journalist who does additional, unpaid work she can add to her CV. She told The Resident Magazine: “Having work experience with a relevant employer makes me stand out from my peers applying for similar positions. It has also helped me gain an insight into the kind of work I’d be doing if I was to be employed by the company.” But working for nothing isn’t the only way to get a job according to Justine Harris, managing director at Harris Lord one of the largest recruitment agencies in Horsham. She said: “Young people trying to get work don’t have to work for free. Many people I know do and have gone on to get good jobs. But there are other ways

you can make an impression and get hired. The first step is to ensure the application and CV have no errors or mistakes. Then candidates need to show passion for the job they have applied for. What we’re looking for as recruiters is depth of knowledge and enthusiasm. Young people should find out plenty about the position, company and industry before writing the cover letter and demonstrate that in an interview.” Justine and her staff also work with schools to help young people identify what type of employment they would be suitable for and help them get a step on the ladder. The recruitment expert advises students to apply their strengths and attributes in their personal life to their professional life. Justine added: “We work with 15 yearolds and advise them to think about skills they might have used in sport or any other activity. That could include communications or team work for example and that will help them to learn what role will suit them when they start applying for jobs.” Justine added that presentation is also important for helping make a good first impression. She added: “It’s very important to look good. No matter what job you are going for. Always dress smart for an interview. It’s quite simple, but people should take a look in the mirror and ask themselves ‘how do I look?’ Also, you would be surprised how many young people we work with don’t know how to do a proper handshake. It might seem trivial but it’s all important. And remember that it doesn’t matter if they get something wrong. What matters is that you sit up straight, make eye contact and show enthusiasm.” Michelle Baker runs Your Career Coach, a business that helps clients find the job of their dreams. She has provided The Resident Magazine with top tips on how young people can take those first few steps into the world of work with confidence: • Create
a professional email address no fluffybunny@hotmail.com here please
• Spellcheck
everything on your CV and covering letter/covering email – Do not use texting abbreviations • For phone interviews, prepare as if face to face. Speak confidently, answer the phone professionally sound engaged and interested and smile when you answer • For face to face interviews, prepare; research the company, have questions to ask them, be professional and don’t swear • Meet with a firm handshake (practice this) • Make eye contact • Remember the 3 Cs – be Confident, keep your answers Concise and be Clear • Dress appropriately. Think Kate Middleton girls. Boys - Prince William • Turn off your mobile phone • Turn up on time • Be grateful. Thank them for their time and the opportunity to meet them • Send a thank you note or email HOT TOPICS OF CONVERSATION AT A JOB OR UNIVERSITY INTERVIEW: The Personal Statement An interviewer might base the questions on your personal statement, so make sure you re-read it. Be prepared to elaborate on what you wrote in your personal statement and make sure you back up your statements. Above all, don’t parrot your personal statement back at them and don’t try and be clever - they would already have researched you on social networking sites. If you haven’t read or done something, remove it before you send it. About yourself Interviewers love to ask you about yourself. These can be pretty tricky interview questions to answer, from the open ended “tell me about yourself” to “how would your friends describe you?” Before an interview, write down a list of strengths and weakness and think of five words to sum up your personality in a positive way. A negative should always be backed up with a positive as below. Practise how you would answer an open-ended question like “tell me about yourself?” The main problem with
I NEED A JOB!
these kinds of questions is that there’s the temptation to ramble on. Keep your answer down to three or four sentences. Tell them about your general interests and study interests and what you think are your main personality characteristics. If you’ve had any work experience bring that in at a job interview. If they ask you if you have any weaknesses, identify one (e.g. “sometimes I struggle with time management”), but always tell them what you are doing to tackle it (“But I’ve got a few of strategies to cope with it”). If they ask you about your strengths, list a few, be honest and to the point, but don’t brag. They might ask you to back it up with examples so be prepared for that. Another favourite among interviewers is: “What do you do in your spare time?” Tell them something interesting and different, not just: “I like hanging out with my mates.” Remember, they may have already looked you up online. About your school Interviewers may ask you questions about your education and school such as “what is your school like?” or “tell us about your GCSE or A-levels?” It’s best not to be negative about your lessons and teachers. You might want to say something like: “Although I enjoyed my lessons, I would have liked more freedom to pursue my own academic interests.” When explaining why you chose particular GCSE or A-levels, don’t just say “Because they look good on my application” or “Because I knew I could get good grades”. Talk about a particular aspect or you’re A-levels that you found interesting or perhaps why you chose that combination. How do your A-levels feed into each other? What are the areas of overlap? Are they relevant in that job interview/company/ industry. About the company/college/university and course When potential employers, colleges or universities make you an offer, they want to make sure that you’re pretty likely to accept it. Therefore, during the interview, they’ll probably try and gauge your level of
enthusiasm for the company or the course. This is where they separate the people applying because they don’t know what they want to do, from the people who genuinely want to go there. Consequently, the job/ college/university interview questions you might come across might include: Why do you want to do this job/course/degree? Why have you chosen this company/college/ university? Why should we offer you a job or place? What do you know about this company/course? What in particular attracts you to this job or course? What makes you want to work in this particular industry/study this subject at university? The key to answering these interview questions is to make sure you’ve done your research. Before your interview, you should have gone online to learn about the company or to an open day (if you’ve missed them, then arrange a private visit) and used that opportunity to find out about the industry/ask current students and tutors about the university and course Subject questions for university interviews It’s more than likely that they will ask you about your subject. Don’t worry, they don’t expect you to be an expert, but they are looking for a genuine interest and aptitude for the subject. Often they’ll be testing how you think and how you handle difficult questions. When answering, think if there’s anything else you’ve read that you can reference (perhaps something you’ve studied at school or something from your further reading). For example, if you get asked about a book that you mentioned in your personal statement, use this opportunity to talk about other books, which explored similar themes to that one. Competency-based questions The best way to prepare for this type of interview question is to think about what skills you have (e.g. time management, teamwork, communication and selfmotivation) and then pinpoint times when you have shown evidence of those skills. This could be in a weekend job, during an extra-curricular activity or on the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.

Be honest If you don’t have a clue about your future career at college/ university then tell them, but do say something like “I hope this opportunity will help me finalise my career aspirations.” It’s not all about careers either; if you want to go to that company/college/university because you are utterly fascinated by the subject, then tell them. They want employees/students that have a genuine enthusiasm for the subject. Practice makes perfect I’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, the best way to prepare for
an interview is practice. Stage a mock interview. Ask your parents to ask you some of the questions above, and practice how you would answer those questions. Don’t learn your answers off by heart though; you don’t want to sound over rehearsed or like a robot. Good luck and remember - you get one chance to make a first impression, so make it count. MATTERS OF THE ART In a wedding gift special, we look at the rise of art buying as a present for newlyweds and showcase some prints they will love for life

The Cockatoo by Anita Klein
Art
ALWAYS AND FOREVER
Art consultant Maddi Reid selects some ideal artwork for wedding gifts and says it’s the gift that keeps on giving A piece of art could be the wedding gift solution for the modern couple who already live together and have everything. These days, the traditional gift list is still a thriving part of the British wedding ritual, particularly for those couples that are moving in together for the first time. Toasters, cookware and cutlery all feature highly. However, if you’ve lived together for several years before taking the plunge or are uniting two well-stocked homes from years of independence, you might consider a less conventional gift list. More and more, couples are opting to ask guests to contribute towards a beautiful piece of art for their wedding present. Wedding organiser Lucy, from Mayflower events in Sussex, says: “I think this is a fabulous idea. Many of us can’t afford to invest in good quality art when we have a wedding to pay for, but would adore a special piece to place on the wall to
enjoy for years to come”. Whether you are a first time buyer or you wish to add to an existing collection, art gift lists are easy to set up and allow your guests to be as generous as they like. Some couples set out with a definite piece in mind that they want the contributions to go towards, others select their artwork when the mayhem of the wedding has passed and they know exactly how much money they have in the pot. Art Consultant’s and some galleries are able to assist in finding the perfect piece to complement your home and will happily collect payments from guests, while keeping you updated on the list’s progress. Aware that choosing a piece of artwork is intensely personal and cannot be rushed, it is their job to ensure that your gift is as special and memorable as the big day itself.

“It can be difficult to choose a good wedding gift. But increasingly art is becoming a really popular present. It shows that someone has put thought into their gift, and placed an importance on the couple and their marriage. It also makes such a lovely gift because art can last forever. It is something a newly married couple can share and treasure, and help them remember their wedding day. It makes such a great change from a toaster, crystal decanter and other useful household items. - James Stewart from the Zimmer Stewart Gallery

Travel agent Carolyn Lodge lists her top spots for a romantic getaway, perfect for a pair of lovebirds. Whether it’s relaxation or activities you’re looking for here are four heavenly honeymoons Safari and Beach. This option is very popular among our honeymoon couples. Tanzania combines perfectly with Zanzibar and these are perfect destinations during our summer months. Botswana also combines well with a beach stay in Mauritius and from a weather point of view May/June or late September/October work very well. If you are looking for a slightly shorter safari experience then the Kruger in South Africa can be combined very easily with Mauritius. The safari experience is magical with guests being able to choose between luxury tented accommodation or exceedingly comfortable lodges. For the icing on the cake we can arrange a private champagne picnic lunch or a romantic candlelit dinner in the bush just for the two of you. A hot air balloon trip over the Serengeti or the Mara is worth every penny and quite often family or friends buy this experience as a wedding gift for the lucky couple. The second part of your honeymoon you will spend relaxing by the warm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean and this will be
the perfect compliment to the first few days of exhilaration and excitement on safari. If you are still looking for some activity there are complimentary watersports at nearly all hotels plus excellent golf and tennis. But if it is total relaxation you are seeking most of the hotels boast excellent spas. For a balance of city break and countryside, Italy is the perfect European honeymoon destination with its superb food and wines, its history and culture and its love of music and romance. Italy has so much to offer and makes a wonderful choice for a honeymoon from June through to the end of September. Explore the beautiful city of Florence – so easy to get around and then maybe head to the Tuscan countryside and stay in a small boutique hotel in one of the hilltop towns with amazing views like the superbly romantic Borgo San Felice. Several of these small hotels are located on a big family run estate where they produce their own wine, harvest their own olives and cure their own hams and where the hospitality is warm and welcoming. You could also combine a short visit to Rome 79

with a stay in Tuscany or Umbria or maybe a visit to beautiful Venice with a stay on one of the Italian Lakes. There are many permutations from which to choose. City and Beach. If you are planning a spring or autumn wedding, Morocco would be a wonderful choice for your honeymoon. You can easily enjoy a two or three centre holiday without too much travelling between places. The city of Marrakech would be a great start for the first three or four days followed by a couple of nights in the Atlas Mountains at one of the Kasbahs to relax after exploring the souks and soaking up the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. From the Atlas mountains a car will whisk you to the magical and enchanting city of Essaouira on the coast. To stay at the charming and beautifully run L’Heure Bleue hotel within the walls of the Medina will be the perfect choice for the last few days of your honeymoon. You will become totally enchanted with this delightful hotel, the mysteries of the city and the wild unspoilt beaches. For a Caribbean honeymoon, the combination of Barbados and Grenada works exceptionally well. Several couples plan winter weddings in the UK and then wish to head for the sunshine and warm sea and the Caribbean is the perfect answer. However we have a word of caution for those couples planning Christmas/New Year weddings as both the airfares and hotel rates are much higher than at other times of the year so they need to make allowances when budgeting. The west coast of Barbados boasts several excellent hotels and we would suggest staying first at Cobblers Cove with its intimate atmosphere, superb cuisine and beautiful sandy beach and then travelling down to Grenada for a stay at the very relaxing and delightful Calabash set in a stunning bay and with its Gary Rhodes restaurant and utterly charming staff. The Calabash and Grenada perfectly compliment the buzzy, more sophisticated island of Barbados and the two combine to make a truly memorable honeymoon. Carolyn Lodge Travel is based in Cranleigh. The travel agents offiers a complimentary Honeymiles service. This allows the family and friends of a wedding couple to receive contributions towards their honeymoon. The couple would usually include a note with their wedding invitations inviting friends and family to make a monetary contribution in lieu of gifts. The family and friends then call the travel agent and it keeps a list of everyone who contributes along with any personal message they would like to leave. The wedding couple will receive a cheque along with the names and messages. 81

ENGLISH PALMS, INTELLIGENT PLANTING Palms are what you use in an English garden if you don’t want your garden to look English. Use them intelligently and they can look amazing. Use them unintelligently and they’re a disaster. Intelligently? Before using them, think very carefully about what you’re trying to create and how they’re going to look in their chosen position. Because the Chusan Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) is both widely available and reliably hardy, this is the one to consider but getting the position and general husbandry of this tree right is crucial. Strong winds beat up the leaves to the point where they will become a horrible pointless mess, so planting a Trachycarpus on the sea front anywhere in Britain is a fine example of unintelligent planting. The evidence is everywhere to be seen – I don’t think I need to labour the point but if you’re in any doubt Eastbourne, Brighton and Bognor all have splendid examples. On the other hand, position in rich soil in light woodland, away from the wind and indulge in some creative grooming and these can look as good as any palm in the tropics. Creative grooming? Removing the unsightly bits. Most of the bigger ones we sell at the nursery have the hairy stuff (the remains of the leaves) removed, revealing the beautiful cream coloured striped trunk. The other effect of stripping the hair off is to create a better proportioned plant – the trunk necessarily becomes more slender which has the effect of making the head of fronds look bigger. A nice result. Also, all old yellowing leaves are removed as are the old flowers. We’re aiming for a nicely proportioned, visually well-organised and
verdant tree. Intelligent positioning and intelligent grooming can accomplish this. Another beneficial effect of growing these in light woodland is to increase the length of the stalks on the leaves (they’re looking for the light), giving a more exotic appearance. The European Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis) is the second hardiest after Trachycarpus and is not bad in a bit of wind (the leaves are nice and flexible) but it’s best avoided in very cold gardens. It’s slow growing and looks good (but different) in sun or shade. The usual grooming (remove non-green bits) is vital and occasional use of fungicide as they’re susceptible to black spots on their leaves. Lastly – the most beautiful palm in the world. The Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) is gigantic and incredibly forgiving of all sorts of conditions (even wind). It’s used extensively as a landscape plant in mediterranean climates around the world and rightly so. BUT in this country, its frost tenderness means that central London is the only place it’ll do well. Central London undoubtedly has the most benign climate in Britain (warmest summers, very mild winters and least windy) and it’s always good to see the one in the roundabout north of Lambeth Bridge and the ones at the intersection of Kensington High Street and Warwick Gardens. When choosing palms it’s worth remembering that they’re always grown from seed and therefore will vary somewhat (especially Chamaerops humilis). It sounds silly but always buy the best looking ones.

the jewel in the
SUSSEX CROWN The beautiful region of Sussex is widely recognised as a gem of a place in which to work, rest or play. And that’s underlined by the fact that the region is home to some of the UK’s pre-eminent goldsmiths and bespoke jewellery designers. In a two-part special, and with a sparkle in her step Jess Archer, the Resident Magazine’s new fashion expert, talks to our diamond lights and features some of their exquisite work
Richard Talman
Trained in London’s jewellery quarter of Hatton Garden, award winning craftsman Richard Talman now operates from his studio in Wivelsfield on the outskirts of Haywards Heath. Four years after starting out his career as an apprentice, he entered and won first prize in the UK Fine Jewellery Competition and a year later he was recognised as one of the most skilful goldsmiths in the world. Richard prides himself on his commitment to make every client feel ‘unique’.
At what age did you want to become a jeweller?
Well I’ve always had an incredibly keen interest in metalwork which I guess steered me towards jewellery design and I have had a lifelong passion for collecting gemstones. I’m not just a jeweller. I’m a skilled craftsman creating bespoke designs which exceed my customers’ expectations.
What sets you apart? From your first conversation with me, meetings in my studio through to design, manufacture and delivery, you will only be dealing with me; the creator of your special piece! It’s a total one-to-one personal service. Why come to you?
Because you want something a little different and incredibly individual. I am a Goldsmith, not a salesman.
Your design style in a sentence?
Traditional, with a modern twist, great value for money, superb service and Quality with a capital Q.
Your favourite gemstone? Whilst the Diamond will always be a timeless favourite, followed closely by the Pink Sapphire, my absolute number one right now would be the rarely-seen Pariba Tourmaline, this is a semi precious stone in a beautiful turquoise/deep blue colour Are you a rings, bracelets or necklace man? I love all of them! But it’s not what I like; it’s what my customer wants me to produce for them. Jewellery is all about personal taste, and I enjoy making anything that’s asked of me. What should customers expect from you?
I work on a simple FIRST principle with all my clients – Friendly, Informed, Responsive, Service-oriented and Trustworthy advice, design and delivery.
Celebrity you’d like to design for, and why?
Sadly no longer with us but it would have been Elizabeth Taylor. Few people had a bigger collection of the most exquisite jewellery. She knew what she liked and how to wear it. I would have loved to have had 1-2-1 with her and it would have been a thrilling challenge to create an exquisite piece for one of the great style icons. 01444 471380 richard@rtfj.co.uk rtfj.co.uk
Annabel Panes
for Cred Having created the world’s first fair trade wedding ring, Cred is passionate about creating beautiful, ethical jewellery: encompassing a responsibility to both people and the planet. The team at Cred are led by head designer Annabel who specialises in ethical processes.
What sets you apart? My experience of design gained from my master in Jewellery design at Sir John Cass in London. For my masters I looked specifically at how one could be an ethical designer. I have direct contact with customers and spend time with them, listening to their ideas to create their dream piece of jewellery Silver, Gold or palladium? Gold, as this is what makes our pieces unique in both style and ethos. It is a metal that has so much significance and a very interesting heritage, we are able to source it directly from the mine and work with the miner to represent them, bringing great worth and value to the gold we use. Currently gold is the only precious metal with the fairtrade certification launched last year. Your design style in a sentence?
My pieces tell a story about the wearer, bringing together beautiful stones in unique, elegant designs.
What makes a great bespoke designer?
Listening to your client to find out about them as an individual and drawing upon their interests and creative ideas. You can then come up with a unique design that reflects their desires.
Celebrity you’d like to design a piece for and why?
Rachel Weisz, she is a fantastic actress who has great style that would benefit from some Cred sparkle.
Most embarrassing career moment?
As of yet I have avoided any horrendously embarrassing moments. But I will be sure to tell you when I deliver the wrong ring to the wrong customer!
Why come to you?
We offer wonderfully sourced metals and stones, and pieces that are all made in the UK. You will also have something designed that you know will be having a positive impact on those involved in the mining of it. Our 3D design process enables the client to visualise and be a part of their commission from start to finish
Favourite piece you’ve made? The Iolite Penelope cocktail ring, inspired by the cocktail drinking ladies of the 1930’s. It is a unique setting that beautifully scoops underneath the stone, so the wearer benefits from a truly sparkly blue stone. 0203 176 7836 info@credjewellery.com credjewellery.com 89

Ockenden Manor spa
OOOOH SPAAAAA A new spa has opened in the heart of the Sussex countryside. We went to explore and found that rather than being a guilty pleasure, it was essential for restoring us to our most fabulous selves
It’s the height of self-indulgence and luxury – a Spa Day, or two days, or three is something many of us only dream about as we race through our busy lives with barely time to eat or think let alone run a brush through our hair. Often, they’re saved for a special occasion - a birthday or a prewedding way of relieving any strains or stress. Rarely are they ‘just because’ and we at The Resident Magazine think that should stop right here. Having recently spent 24 hours at Ockenden Manor’s new spa in Cuckfield, we have found a new lease of life and are on a mission to revive the Spa Day, not as a treat, but as an absolute necessity. What’s our justification? Well, you’ll be revived, more alert, more productive and more ready to take on the world after a few hours of ‘r and r’. Opened at the beginning of January 2012, the Ockenden Manor Spa has been built inside the estate’s original 19th century walled fruit garden. The new contemporary, airy structure has been designed as a peaceful haven set in the unspoilt landscape which inspired the interior design, tones and textures. It is one of the most significant destination spas to open in the South East, just one hour from London. Guests looking for a serious retreat will find tranquillity in one of the six large rooftop spa suites. These have been designed with French windows opening onto a large terrace, with uninterrupted views of the South Downs. The roof is planted with turf and shrubs, creating an inside/outside feel – and creating privacy for the guests.
The spa features Ila products, which go beyond organic. All products are free from synthetic chemicals and contain a rare level of natural energy, achieved by sourcing the finest raw ingredients directly from local producers who cultivate and harvest them in harmony with nature. Treatments include the Rainforest Rejuvenation Facial, Body Wrap for Bio-Energising and the Pregnancy Scrub and Massage. The Spa also uses Ren and Electric Body products. And, in keeping with the natural and pure feel, all the water for the swimming pool, outdoor hot tub, indoor spa bath and rain shower comes from the hotel’s own underground spring. Spa Manager, Su Huff, previously at sister Historic Sussex Hotel, Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa in nearby Climping, said: “The spa is a welcome addition to the Manor, already known for its history, character and service. With such inspiring surroundings it was a natural direction for the hotel to take. Our aim is to fully nurture our guests, by offering unique treatments and sublime Ila products. Ila means ‘earth’ in Sanskrit and we feel this reflects the natural approach that we are taking here at Ockenden Manor Spa.” And nurtured you will feel. From the warm welcome from the staff whose service was second-to-none, to the equally warm and soft robes and the serene silence, you will feel cocooned in a world where only you matter. Where you can enjoy the company of those you are with or a few hours of sublime solitude. And it will be the most at one with our beautiful planet and the Sussex

countryside you have felt for a long time. The interior is designed to reflect the best of nature. Including soft wooden handles (chosen personally by the owner), the faint sound of rainforest birds and panpipes as well as warm waters - even in the invigorating outdoor pool. Hotel suites, of which there are six situated on the rooftop, are big. Allowing you the space you need to be your most relaxed. Large bathtubs offer yet more opportunity to indulge yourself in an activity you may not get time for at home – at least without the screams of the kids in the background. And shutters, which provide a view of the surrounding countryside, just add to the tranquillity. And if it’s silence you are after, a night’s stay is a must. No cars, no sirens, no street lamps. Just darkness, and peace and quiet. Facilities include everything you would expect from a first class spa. Walkthrough rain showers, a sauna and steam room, eight treatment rooms, an Isopod floatation tank, a nail bar, relaxation rooms, fully equipped gymnasium and fitness studio for pilates and yoga classes, outdoor sundeck, outdoor open fire pit, spa shop and a spa lounge serving a selection of healthy refreshments are all available. For anyone staying over there is the option of dining in the Michelin Starred restaurant at the Ockenden Manor Hotel – the best wine, duck and delicious chocolatey, banana biscuit desert we’ve ever tasted! All in all, it’s a few hours out of your schedule of uninterrupted, guilt-free me time. Where you can recharge your batteries and invigorate your body and mind - which will only help you be better at life when you finally decide to return. Well that’s our excuse anyway. Enjoy. The Ockenden Manor Spa is for the exclusive use of members and guests. Individual spa membership rates start from £1,100 per year. NO WORRIES
Fretting too much? Relax. There are steps you can take to be anxietyfree and live your life without a care in the world Worry is rife. Whether it’s relationships, your business, your health, concerns about family members, finances, worrying you’re not successful enough or about how others view you, you’re not alone. There is a multitude of factors that can
contribute to our woes these days. But thankfully, there’s no need to suffer in silence. The Resident Magazine has enlisted the help of two coaches, who are trained in helping people tackle the problems that stop them reaching their full potential in life. 95
Jenny Kovacs, who runs GiftWish, says it’s a good idea to have a think about how long you are worrying for to get an idea of how serious things are. Here she provides three tops tips that could lead you on the road to being anxiety free. JENNY’S TOP TIPS: Tip one Recognise whether you are thinking something through or worrying. If you’re worrying, note how long you’re worrying for and any negative feelings or effects that this may be having on you, the people around you or your daily life. Try asking yourself what’s the worst that could happen? Then write this down. This alone brings your concerns out into the open and allows you the space to acknowledge it. Worrying is often driven by FEAR so remember this acronym False Evidence Appearing Real What evidence do you actually have? It hasn’t happened and there is nothing to prove that this will happen either, so when you feel the fear, recognise it as just that. Tip two Conversely, while you’re busy worrying,
have you stopped to think about an ideal and realistic solution to your worry or an outcome with a much more positive ending? Tip three Take a blank piece of paper. On one side write down everything that you’re worried about. On the other side draw a large circle with a smaller circle inside. This is your circle of influence. In coaching we use this to help people decipher the things that are within their control and the things that are outside of their control. Of the things that are purely 100% within your control, write them in the smaller central circle. For everything else it goes into the circle of concern, everything there is outside of your control, and gives you less to worry about. This is based on a book called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.

Nikki Wild (ACMA) is the owner and director of two coaching businesses. The executive coach combines her finance, management and coaching qualifications for a unique blend of understanding and insight so that her clients balance success in all areas of their work and lives. Nikki says: STOPPING WORRY
Did you know that subconscious activity takes up about 85 to 90 per cent of our brain capacity compared to 10 to 15 per cent for the conscious or logical part? What this means is that if you want to stop worrying, you need to know how to program your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is designed to bring about results without us being aware of the process. Whilst very clever, the one thing our subconscious can’t do is make value judgements. It simply sets out to achieve whatever our dominant thought is – regardless of whether that is helpful or harmful.
WORRY IS NEGATIVE GOAL SETTING
If worrying about something becomes the dominant thought, the subconscious sets out to make it happen. The mind doesn’t recognise ‘not’ so to think ‘I do not want to lose my job’ the dominant fear is ‘lose my job’. That’s what you programme your mind to bring about. If someone says “don’t worry”, the focus is on ‘worry’ so it has the opposite effect to that intended. Our mind is programmed to find ways to prove us right. If we worry about something, the subconscious will seek out evidence to support that coming true. The tendency to worry varies from person to person as each has a different anxiety response to a given situation. For example, the thought of travelling by plane has a range of responses from excitement through ambivalence to worry, anxiety and even panic. The situation hasn’t changed but the response has. Acknowledging the fear that is leading to worry is the first step to reducing or eliminating it altogether.
caught in a natural disaster.) Give that a score out of 100 on your “awfulness” scale. Now, consider the situation you are worried about. What are the facts and evidence (rather than the perceived threat)? Where does that worry sit compared with the 100/100 benchmark? Very often the perspective shifts and the situation feels less of a worry.
TECHNIQUE 2 – RETAKE CONTROL
Examine the thing you are worried about and break it down into what you can control or influence and what you can’t. In reality, there may not be much that we can control directly so decide your personal strategies to regain an element of control. For example, if you are worried about being late for an important appointment, you can’t control the traffic on the journey there but you can choose to manage your time so that you set off and arrive early enough.
TECHNIQUE 3 – FLIP IT
This involves deciding what you want to focus on instead of the source of the worry. Find the positive that you’d rather have instead of the subject of your worry and make that your dominant thought. Here’s a simple exercise that I use with my clients: Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left hand side, list your worries. Complete the sentences ‘I worry that...’ for each one. Now for each one “flip it” into the positive. On the right hand side of the page, for each of your worry statements, write your positive on the opposite side. Complete the sentences ‘I love that…’ for each one. Read your ‘love statements regularly to keep them as your dominant thought.
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF WORRY
The perceived threat triggers the release of the chemical cortisol into the brain and stimulates the fight or flight response. That reaction is a self-protection mechanism and is designed for short bursts. Continued worry can lead to prolonged effects leading to stress and over time, an impact on health.
FOR EXAMPLE I worry that I might lose my job I love that I can be a valued employee I worry whether my children will grow up happy I love that I can give my children a good start in life I worry that I may not enjoy good health I love that I can choose a healthy lifestyle
HOW TO STOP WORRYING
OUTSIDE HELP
Techniques that help with managing worry generally centre around reprogramming the negative dominant thought (the fear) with a resourceful, helpful state of mind. That positive thought releases the chemical serotonin which assists with creative thinking, assists us in finding solutions to problems and is associated with feelings of happiness.
TECHNIQUE 1 – DECIDE YOUR “AWFULNESS” SCALE What, for you, constitutes the worst possible experience you can imagine? (Clients often name things like being
For deep seated concerns, my clients usually receive a combination of coaching and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) interventions to change thought patterns and eliminate the fear and worry. Other interventions might include hypnotherapy, TFT (Thought Field Therapy) and counselling from qualified professionals. KING OF THE SWINGERS Love golf? Want to up your game and lower your handicap? The coach at Haywards Heath Golf Club gives away some top tips to help golfers of any ability play like a pro
Simon Iliffe has been playing golf since he was 13 and turned pro at 19. Twenty years later he still spends his days on the golf course, as the coach at Haywards Heath Golf Club. The golfer plays off a handicap of four and says after two decades, his passion for the game is as strong as ever. “No two days are the same. I love meeting new people. I love helping people of all abilities improve. It’s especially satisfying when you help a really good player achieve something they had been aiming for and equally, watching a new player finally get the ball in the air brings a big smile to my face”, Simon told The Resident Magazine. And it’s a game, Simon says, that’s not just for the elite. He has a range of clients who all enjoy a round. “I coach bankers,
electricians, men, women, teachers. All different types of people want to learn and love the game. And I have always believed that I’m not training people to be the next Tiger Woods. Instead, I’m helping them reach their own personal best, their own goal, whatever that might be. Although Simon can coach a range of players of any ability, he also specialises in helping people with their ‘short game’. The club has a putting lab set up for training in the short game - something Simon says is crucial for a good player. “I’ve never seen a pro win when he wasn’t putting well.” The coach also says another benefit of playing at Haywards Heath Golf Club is the beautiful surroundings. He added: “We’re very lucky in West Sussex to have some beautiful
courses. And we’re close to the coast too, which can make for an interesting game, as you’re exposed to the elements.” Simon has played around the world, in places including Portugal, Cuba, Tunisia and St Andrews. And who does he rate as the best player in the world? “Tiger Woods. He turned golf from a game into a sport. He was the first golfer to really focus on the whole package. The fitness, the health, the nutrition, the sponsorship. He paved the way.” Here, Simon gives his top tips for improving your game. For more information visit haywardsheathgolfclub.co.uk
starting with the grip
The most important part of the player’s set-up in golf is the way they hold the club. It has often been commented that if a player’s grip is wrong, they’ll need to swing it poorly to compensate. For the right handed golfer the power and pull of the club into impact comes from the left (leading) arm and hand. The right hand is for feel when playing shorter shots and putting.
THE DRILL
Stand tall and let your arms hang by your side. Look at the way the left hand hangs; exactly as it should be PLACED on the golf club, two to three knuckles showing and relaxed from the elbow down.
Place your left hand on the club in this manner, with the thumb sitting on top of the grip, and slightly to the right side. Make sure to leave ¼” free at the top of the grip so the hand doesn’t extend beyond the butt of the club. Simply place your right hand below the left with the left hand thumb securely fitting in the palm of the right hand. Interlocking or overlapping the little finger of the left hand and the forefinger of the right hand is down to individual preference; however your grip pressure should be firm but with little tension. A natural grip will give you the freedom to generate effortless power and a full release of the golf club.
standing for power
It is very important to realise, if you’re going to drive the ball long distances, you must be set-up properly to achieve this. Starting from the ground up, your width of stance must be wider than your shoulders. A wide stance will give good balance and also restrict the hip-turn creating a bigger X-Factor.
the importance of ball position Many golfers get confused about where the golf ball should be positioned between their feet for the different clubs in the bag. To keep it simple, the further forward the ball is positioned (towards the left foot for right handed golfers) a more sweeping and upward strike will be created. This is good for drivers and long irons as it will keep loft on the club, encouraging the ball in the air. The further back in the stance the ball is positioned a more downward and descending blow will create low launch but with high spin; good for wedge shots and short irons.
I suggest the ball should never be placed further back than the middle of the stance for normal iron shots, and always towards the front foot with longer, less lofted clubs. By varying the ball position you can change the loft of your club. For example take a 7 iron and play it more in line with your left foot and it will play more like an 8 iron. Next time you play, take a half set with you and try varying the ball position to change the playing characteristics of each club.
The X-Factor is the difference between the degrees the shoulders turn compared to the hips. The greater the difference, the more power you can achieve. For an average amateur, the hips should turn 45 degrees and the shoulders 90 degrees, giving a 45 degree X-Factor. (In his younger days Tiger Woods could create an 80 degree X-Factor). Make sure the ball position is set well forward in the stance (towards the left foot – right handed golfers) with 70% of your weight on the right foot. Drop the right shoulder a little to encourage a god upward strike on the ball and to create your optimum launch angle. Make sure also to look over your left shoulder to see the target. This will have the shoulders square to encourage an inside take-away. Finally lift your chin off your chest for a good shoulder turn. You are now set for power. 99

Pitching, Don’t be afraiD of the ‘bounce’ All golfers are afraid of the thinned-shot across the green, as it can have disastrous consequences. They often blame this on their Wedge having too much bounce (or a large sole). However using a wedge with too little bounce can lead to a life-time of heavy or ‘fatted’ shots.
THE DRILL
To play pitch shots more confidently, set-up with 60% of your weight onto your left-side (for right handed golfers) with the ball positioned no more than 12” in front of your right toe. Stand with a narrow stance and open it (to the left) a little. Try to get your eyes as much over the ball as possible to encourage a good spine angle and also room for the arms to swing. Position your weight in the balls of your feet. Make a steep backswing keeping your weight positioned predominantly on your left side. Now strike down on the ball but feel like the entire sole of the club strikes the ground under the ball, NOT the leading edge! You must commit down through impact but in a smooth manner as this will keep the club moving through impact and stop the decelerations and ‘jabs’. It will also help to complete your follow through. You are now using the club’s bounce and you’ll see a soft landing shot pitch shot using the club’s natural loft.
Putting, Drive for show, Putt for Dough
We’ve all heard the phrase a hundred times, but how many of us actually spend most of our practice time, putting? Before you rush out there to perfect your stroke here a few basic reminders to take with you.
THE DRILL
Position the ball halfway between the centre of your stance and the left heel so that your sternum is just behind the ball (r/h golfers) This will allow the putter to rise through impact and achieve good ball roll Tilt forwards from the waist and allow your arms to hang freely from your shoulders. Grip the putter in this ‘arms hanging’ position (many of you with standard length putters may find you need to cut the length of your putter to fit this new posture.) This will promote a pendulum style stroke, using the shoulders to rock with NO turn from the body.
the greensiDe bunker shot SPLASH. Don’t DIG: This shot is about precision and accuracy of strike... If you try and remove the entire contents of the bunker onto the green in one swing, there will be little control in your shot...
THE DRILL
Play the ball forward in the stance (towards the left heel), set your weight and hands behind the ball, open your stance a little (to the left) and club-face (to the right) in the set-up. This will encourage the club to sweep through the sand and use the
natural bounce of your sand wedge. Try to strike directly beneath the ball which will have the club entering the sand just ½” behind the ball for optimum contact. The ideal bunker shot will produce a shallow splash shot, eliminating hitting too much sand and thinned-shots. Perfect this technique and you’ll see a high soft landing shot, with a small amount of sand removed from the bunker. Job Done.
Make sure your weight is on the balls of your feet, eyes are over the top of the ball so you can visualise putting straight from the ball to the hole. Finally make sure your hands are positioned directly over the ball (not too far ahead or behind). Now simply encourage the putter to move straight back and through the ball (40% back-stroke to 60% through-stroke) with minimal wrist movement Remember putting is about consistency: these tips will keep your body still with good balance, allow you to make your stroke with your shoulders and give consistent ball striking and feel. 101

aving designed many bathrooms over the years means I am always on the lookout for something new and inspirational. I will often start the design process by looking for a really stunning piece, whether it’s a show-stopping bath, some incredible tiles or the simplicity of a sleek shower. I recently visited a design show at Chelsea Harbour Design Centre where I found that show-stopping bath. The Amalfi bath by Vitoria and Albert caught my eye because it is finished in piano black on the outer skin. The shape reminiscent of a traditional slipper bath, means it would fit well in contemporary or classic surroundings. This range is made from volcanic limestone, a robust and stain resistant material, which is warm to the touch to ensure your bath stays piping hot whilst looking utterly gorgeous. View more avandabaths.com
Whether you prefer a contemporary or traditional style in your bathroom, you will always require a really efficient shower. Hansgrohe are probably one of the bestknown brassware manufacturers in the world and their Axor collection is top of the industry. The Phillippe Starck designed ‘Shower Heaven’ has to be the king of shower heads, it’s a cool one metre square, has a number of settings and has optional integrated lighting. There is a smaller version too if space does not allow, along with a co-ordinating range of thermostats and hand showers. See more at hansgrohe-int.com. With this in mind, I would always house showers within a very simple frameless glass enclosure. Try majestic showers, Matki or a local glazing company. Use with a wet room system for that ultimate seamless look for the floor or there are many low profile shower trays around if you cannot have a wet room.
Tiles are often the last piece of the design process for many people, but I will often start by finding something interesting and different in texture, colour or material first. For me natural tiles really are special. I have recently been using some gorgeous mother of pearl and river shell tiles to add glamour, interesting tones and tactile finishes. A favourite of mine is the Plain Grey mother of pearl tiles by Maybury Home, these cannot be used in a shower area, but using them as a basin splash back or to line lit alcoves means they stand out as a special feature. Team with a simple, natural stone on the floor and wet areas and your senses will be overwhelmed. See more atmayburyhome.com
Plenty of storage is obviously an important factor to consider when designing a bathroom. I will usually design bespoke joinery to cope with this, incorporating the wash basin and often the toilet and cistern to really make use of the space. There are also many off-theshelf products and the designs around at the moment that can be fun as well as functional. Check out the Jaime Hayon designs for Bisazza Bagno, bisazzabagno.com and if your budget doesn’t quite allow then why not create your own piece by converting an old chest of drawers or console table into a vanity unit, it’s a great way to make your bathroom unique and will fit with a contemporary, classic or vintage style.

TRANSFORM YOUR OPEN SPACE Want to uncover your garden’s potential but don’t know what’s involved? Daniel Clark, the founder of Open Space, answers your questions about landscape gardening HOW DO I KNOW IF MY GARDEN IS TOO BIG OR SMALL TO BE LANDSCAPED? Any size of garden can be landscaped, no matter how big or small it is. As long as you use a company that has the expertise to make the most of your outdoor space, you can’t go wrong.
WHAT IS THE USUAL PROCESS FOR LANDSCAPING? DO YOU DRAW PLANS? I provide an initial consultation, at which I will find out what work you need carried out and we can also discuss ideas together. I won’t charge for the first meeting. It’s just to find out what you want done, and for you to decide if you want to go ahead. Then, I draw up plans and send you a quote. Once work begins, I can provide an update on progress as often as you want. HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS USUALLY TAKE? This totally depends on the size of the garden and the work involved. Generally speaking, landscaping can take anything from a weekend to a few months. But if there are specific timescales you are working towards just let me know. DO YOU NEED ACCESS TO THE INSIDE OF THE HOUSE? Usually I can carry out all work on your outside space without the need to use your home. But bear in mind that I will probably need access to electricity and water. CAN I HAVE A SAY IN THE TYPE OF GARDEN I HAVE AND THE PLANTS, MATERIALS AND SURFACES USED? Of course! Your garden needs to reflect you and your lifestyle. So you can have as much or as little input as you like. I can offer as much advice as you need on ways to utilise the space effectively but I also need your help to make decisions on particular themes or features. And together we will bring your garden to life. WHAT TIME OF YEAR SHOULD I BE LOOKING TO HAVE MY GARDEN LANDSCAPED? If you would like your garden ready for spring and summer, the best time to hire a landscape gardener is in the autumn. However, I work all year round. So you can get started at any time.
Daniel Clark
IS IT REALLY EXPENSIVE? Obviously this depends on the scale of work required. Many people think hiring a landscape gardener is massively expensive – but it doesn’t have to be! Even the smallest changes can have an impact and transform your space. I work on projects with a range of budgets. So simply give me a call and find out how much yours will cost. You will get the costs and my advice before you commit to anything. DO YOU PROVIDE REFERENCES? Yes. I have many happy clients who are willing to recommend my services. References can be supplied on request. Visit openspacelandscaping.co.uk for more information.

WHO IS the
FAIREST of them all?
With skin cancer scares abound, pop stars promoting a more natural complexion and Essex girls doing nothing to fly the flag for the bronzed look, Rachael Pratt asks - have we seen the end of the tan? As a young woman, I know how it is – keeping up with fashion, with what you should look like, along with everything else in life. But now getting a tan is one less thing to be worrying about. For years women all over the country have suffered with tangoed hands after applying fake tan, or sunburn from baking out on the beach to get the colour they want. Lately, it’s gone too far. But the fashion world has turned a corner. You will have seen or at least heard of, The Only Way Is Essex. From this, the country has been stunned by the women who take their tan to a level that is indescribable. They are the number one tan offenders. Katie Price and Jodie Marsh come in a close second, often resembling tangerines. To be blunt, these are not the type of women are considered inspirational – ‘reality TV star’ or ‘topless model’ surely can’t be at the top of most girls’ aspirations. So is the cheapening of the bronzed look by celebrities causing the fall of the tan? For some, possibly, but for others the facts aren’t getting through. Girls may not only look ridiculous by overdoing their tans (as an array of men have told me), but what is more worrying are the scares that go with achieving the look naturally. Campaigns have raised awareness about the dangers of using sunbeds or exposing yourself to the sun too often, leading to possible cases of skin cancer or increasing the risks of getting it as well as skin damage and premature ageing. Cancer Research UK has warned the public over and over about the danger
of using sunbeds and has highlighted the issues associated with using them. Since the campaigns, the use of sunbeds has become less and less popular. So is the death of tan a good thing? The immediate answer would be yes, with the risks of natural tanning highlighted and the use of fake tan cheapened, pale is definitely the way to go - but are we actually going to drop our tanning products and trips to the beauty salon right away? While celebrities may be flaunting their stuff with their tanned (very tanned) bodies, on the beach doing as they please, those of us indoors are watching the British rain roll down the window panes thinking ‘I really wish I could look more like them.’ This is because of course where celebrities go, the world seems to follow. This image of the perfect body has constantly been thrown in our face and has had an effect on how we feel we should look. However, when you see a bad tan on a celebrity, it makes you wonder: if the celebrities who have make-up artists, stylists and piles of cash can’t even get the perfect tan, how can we do it? Firstly, it’s unnatural to be slapping this gloopy golden paste onto your body (less is more, scrap the slime ladies) and secondly, even if it is natural, you cannot spend that amount of time in the sun to get the tan you want. There are so many health risks and looking good should definitely not be something worth risking your life for. 123
Not only this but having that amount of spare time on your hands to get such a radiant tan isn’t possible with a busy, working lifestyle. You’re only human! Natural is by far the best way to go, even with lighter skin, and there are plenty of products to go with this new pretty, paler you too. If you’ve ever flicked through a gossip magazine, you probably know that pale skin is never really promoted as a positive attribute. Now that’s changing thanks to the power of more upmarket celebrities. Take Nicola Roberts from Girls Aloud for example. Not tanned - still attractive. With this tan craze going on, she felt the need to stand up for the pale girls out there. The singer has been on a mission to promote paler skin as healthier, sexier and more natural. She has even launched her own make up range specifically for paler skin tones. And the big cosmetics companies are starting to realise it too. Avon representative Ginny Ward told The Resident Magazine: “It’s great that people like Reese Witherspoon who is a paler girl and Alesha Dixon, who has much darker skin, can be ambassadors for our products. It shows there is a range of skin colours and tones and not one is better than the other. We offer 16 shades to choose from now since Avon realised that there wasn’t a lot of make up around for paler or darker tones. I have a lighter shade of skin and had tried loads of foundations and such before but I’m practically pink and couldn’t find anything. There’s so much more choice now. When asked why Ginny thought the tan was becoming less and less popular she said: “People have discovered sunbeds don’t make you tan after just the one – you have to go again and again and it’s affecting their health. Women are realising that just a bit of makeup is better than tanning, it looks just as good.” If you’re not ready to ditch the tan yet, maybe the opinions of a few men will sway your opinion. Craig Skilton, aged 20, said: “Fake tan just looks trashy and sunbeds aren’t worth getting skin cancer for. Just keep it natural. A light tan will come in summer anyway!” Luke Caley, also 20, said: “I think it’s good that women are being encouraged to stop using sunbeds but whether they’re pale or tanned, it doesn’t really matter to me.” The message from the men was clear: tanning is good in moderation, but it’s just not worth it when eau natural is better. So the boys made it clear they aren’t too bothered, just as long as it’s natural, and with a wealth of new make up products on the shelf, if your skin is naturally lighter, you can be pale and proud. It’s official - the tan’s tacky. Cancel your sunbed appointments and throw your bronzing products away – instead you can look a beautifully pale million dollars.

Sophia Moir uncovers the season’s secrets for looking your best, with a little help from your make up brush
Originating from Asia, Blemish Balm Creams (also known as BB creams) became popular in the Western world last summer. They are designed to act as a moisturiser, primer and foundation all in one. Grazia say that these BB creams are the key to perfect skin, as seen on the models at the Stella McCartney shows. The Sunday Times Style favour the Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector Daily All-In-One B.B. Blemish Balm Cream (RRP £9.99), which they say is a “five star product, that feels like a luxury beauty buy.” Another trend this spring is gel eyeliners, which are designed to create solid, bold lines that last all day. Pamela Lesch, a make-up artist specialising in airbrush applications, likes to use the MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack (RRP £14.00) as she says “it’s waterproof, it’s extremely long wearing, and it’s offered in wonderfully bold colours.” Her tips on applying gel liner? First, use small amounts of product on the brush. Second, pull out the corner of your eye to make your lash-line taut and therefore, easier to apply the liner to and, lastly, keep the liner very close to your lash line. Beauty sponges are used to create an airbrushed look to the skin. Beauty blogger Makeupsavvy, as seen in Company magazine, says that beauty sponges “give your foundation that really blended seamless finish. Just perfect, especially when you have clear skin that you want to show off!” She adds that her favourite beauty sponge is the Cosmopolitan Blend Perfection Sponge (RRP £4.95), as it “gives a flawless finish, makes the skin look dewy and it never makes your foundation look cakey.” Some
matte bronzers can look too harsh in the springtime, which is why Meredith Baraf, a makeup artist for Victoria’s Secret, prefers cream bronzers instead. She says cream bronzers have a “natural sheen, which creates a more refined tanned look” and advises applying it on the high points of your face. Lifestyle blogger, Bubblegarm, swears by the Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronze Universel Bronzing Makeup Base (RRP £29.00). Full-coverage foundations aren’t necessary at this time of year as they can appear too thick and cakey. Many make-up artists opt for a lighter, mineral foundation instead, which allows your skin to breathe. Company magazine love the BareMinerals Get Started Kit (RRP £48.00). They say it “makes your skin looks brighter” and, because it’s a powder, you “don’t get that horrible tide-line if the colour isn’t perfect for you.” They would recommend it to anyone who is fed up with the messiness of liquids. At New York Fashion Week, bold brows were spotted at the Altuzarra and Rachel Antonoff catwalk shows. Ramy Gafni, a makeup artist and owner of New York City’s Ramy Spa, says that “eyebrows frame the face and frame the eyes.” Eyes Lips Face (ELF) Studio Eyebrow Kit is a make-up bag staple amongst beauty writers and retails for just £3.50. Bigger, more natural brows may also be a part of a trend towards a more organic makeup look that includes paler skin and just bitten lips, as seen on the models at the Giles show at New York Fashion Week. Korres Lip Butter in Wild Rose (RRP £6.60) is perfect for that stained lip effect. 125
Ever stopped, mid bite, and wondered why we consume chocolate eggs at Easter? Sophia Moir went on a hunt to find out
While the celebration of Easter varies depending on individual culture, most people focus on the theme of rebirth – and the egg is seen as a symbol of that. People started by eating dyed eggs, before chocolate eggs were introduced in 19th century Europe, particularly in France and Germany. These eggs were small and made of bitter, dark chocolate, long before cocoa was mass produced. Cadbury launched the first chocolate Easter egg in 1873, but it wasn’t until the 1900’s that Easter eggs became widely available, like they are today. Nowadays, there’s a plethora of chocolate eggs available, from novelty eggs to more luxuriously produced eggs from speciality chocolatiers. The Easter bunny, on the other hand, is a totally different story. The chocolate Easter bunny actually stemmed from two totally separate entities – chocolate eggs, and the rabbit. The rabbit, or bunny, is seen as a celebration of spring, as they tend to breed most during spring. The bunny then morphed into an Easter bunny, and in some cultures they were seen to produce eggs (which they don’t!). The eggs then became chocolate, and not before long, so did the bunnies. Easter bunnies are now seen as synonymous with Easter, just like Easter eggs themselves. Before you worry about the added calories one must be consuming with all those chocolate bunnies on a gluttonous Easter Sunday, studies show that chocolate has considerable health benefits. A recent study found that eating chocolate regularly is linked to a lower BMI, while dark chocolate in particular has
been found to contain antioxidants that can aid healthy cell growth. Also, when mice were fed dark chocolate, they were found to have improved exercise performance and changes to their muscle composition, and eating some types of chocolate can result in favourable changes in blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and cholesterol level. It’s also regarded as a significant stress reliever and is known to release feel good endorphins. Meanwhile, chocolate as a whole has evolved from being very bitter to much more creamy varieties. Cocoa beans can be traced back to 1500BC, with cocoa drinks dating back to 1900BC. Chocolate, derived from these cocoa beans, can be traced back to the Mayas in the early 16th century. However, it wasn’t until the Europeans added sugar and milk to the recipe in the 19th century that chocolate bars, as we commonly know them, were produced. By 1875, milk chocolate was made available to the mass market. Meanwhile, white chocolate became popular under the brand name of “Milky Bar”, and more famously, the Milky Bar kid. Although white chocolate is made in the same way as milk or dark chocolate, it doesn’t actually contain any cocoa paste, liquor or powder. As white chocolate doesn’t contain any of these cocoa solids, it doesn’t actually contain any caffeine, or any of the antioxidants that make dark chocolate so appealing. So when you’re stocking up on your Easter eggs this year, or you just have a cocoa craving, try and stick with the dark chocolate variety for maximum health benefits and – arguably – maximum taste!

A CLEAN SWEEP
Bridget James is opening the shutters and letting the sun shine in. Only problem is it shows up all the dust and cobwebs. Time for a spring clean Spring is sprung, the grass is rizz, I wonder where my duster is. Well it’s great to be able to venture outside at last without having to wear at least 50 layers or drive the kids to school without feeling like you’re doing it at 4am in the morning as it’s so dark. But don’t those extra hours of daylight also serve to highlight just how badly the house needs a spring clean? That early morning sunshine is practically glinting off the dust layers that have accumulated over the winter. And yes, I have a cleaner but those long months of wood fires, remnants of Christmas, dogs and cats rushing in and out, oh, and also the odd live mouse or vole which managed to escape the cat, have taken their toll. It’s time to arm myself with my trusty vac, adorn myself in the “duster” look, throw open those windows, let some fresh air in and begin the Spring Clean. Personally I’d rather be lying prostrate on some sunny beach waiting for an overtly handsome waiter to bring me my customary little Caribbean cocktail – that’s a drink I’m talking about. In times past when people kept their homes shut up against the freezing temperatures of winter, heated them with coal, oil or wood and lit them with candles, the spring clean was an eagerly anticipated ritual which the whole family got involved with. Yes, that’s the ‘whole’ family - not just the lady of the house. That is everyone in the family who had survived the ravages of winter and not just an off day at Sainsbury’s. They would all pitch in to pull every stick of furniture, which admittedly probably wasn’t a lot, and all cloth materials outside. They would then return to the house to sweep
and scrub every corner, wash down the walls, air out linens, remove soot and ashes from the surfaces, dust any books and paintings, while also mending any items that needed it. Now back to modern day reality. Firstly I think if I suggested to the other members of my family that they might like to help me spring clean I think they would lump me into the mildly psychotic category. Secondly I think the kids in particular think the house is actually self cleaning. The only time that assumption breaks down is when I suggest they might like to tidy their rooms with the promise that, yes, I will then drive them to HMV/Game Station/Cinema. They have become used to me periodically asking when they come home from sleepovers, “is such and such’s house tidier than ours?” Don’t mistake me, our house is clean and tidy but it’s not fanatically, show room tidy. I think the term is ‘lived in’. For my part this must be a rebellious move against my own upbringing. My mother was definitely an obsessive compulsive on the tidiness front. When guests came round she couldn’t wait to plump up the cushions back to their original shape as soon as they had departed. We had a state of the art sunken, tiled bath, very de rigeur at the time, which we could only use on high days and holidays in case we messed it up too much. It was a bath for God’s sake. A true sign that I have been spring cleaning is when I turn up at school, wearing my jumper the wrong way round, looking like I’ve got a slight temperature and smelling vaguely of eau de Flash. 128
