If only the England team were as passionate as the football fans in Horsham. Supporters have been out in force in the town centre, with thousands taking a break from work to watch Wednesday’s vital final group match against Slovenia. There were wild scenes in local pubs as Jermaine Defoe scored to send England through to the knockout stages, where they will meet the old foe, Germany. With Aurac reporting a boom in TV sales, flags flying from offices, homes, cars and in one instance in Ashington even a monster truck, Horsham is well and truly behind the national team! The tournament has coincided with great weather good news for the pubs which have heavily promoted coverage of matches. Thanks to its two large outside televisions, rented from Piries Place neighbours Aurac, B52s bar has become a central gathering point for

matches. General manager Steve Threlfall described the atmosphere as “incredible” on Wednesday, but other pubs have also been doing a roaring trade and will be hoping the Three Lions progress to the latter stages. You’ll have done well to find a seat at The Bear, Bar Vin, The Bedford, Kings Arms and The Shelley in Broadbridge Heath too. One spectator at B52s, John O’Sullivan, who owns the Candy Box newsagents, admitted that he wasn’t even a football fan but simply couldn’t miss the game as an event. “How often do you see this kind of atmosphere in Horsham?” he said. Horsham Football Club manager John Maggs was pleased with the team’s performance but said he would consider dropping Rooney! He also felt England would beat Germany, so long as it doesn’t go to penalties! More on Pages 3, 4, 5 &7

Zeroes to Heroes

Well, that was quite tense wasn’t it? And now we face the Germans...see you down the pub for the penalty shoot-out then. Some of Horsham’s supporters put into words how they felt after Wednesday’s victory over Slovenia... Graham Russell, Manager of Aurac, Piries Place: “We had a really good start to June in the run up to the World Cup, and it’s the big screens that are selling well. “There are a lot of promotions around the World Cup and that is helping to drive sales. “The blokes think ‘fantastic, I get a big screen’ while the women think ‘ brilliant, I have a stylish flat screen!’

John Maggs, Manager of Horsham Football Club: “I was in Portugal on holiday for the first two games and like

everyone else I couldn’t understand the way we were playing, couldn’t understand the selections, and there were a lot of English people out there at cafes and bars and everyone was feeling down about it.”

Robert Burnie, American coach of Horsham Baseball Club: “Well I’ve been living in England for six years so I consider myself an England supporter. I really wanted England to go through but my perfect scenario was for USA to go through too.

“The World Cup has really engulfed America, as all the major networks are showing it and it’s huge. 23million people were watching the first game against England.”

Dan Spencer, war hero: “I went down to B52s and it was packed. We paid for a table, which was £30 but you get eight free pints between you so it’s only a couple of quid. I’m glad we did as it really was heaving.” Continued on Page 4...

It’s always a rollercoaster of emotions watching England

Laura Ward, Forest School, Horsham: “A lot of the pupils moved pretty swiftly to the Youth Wing, where they were showing the game live. We didn’t let

them leave any earlier than 3pm, but it was pretty packed over there.”

John O’Sullivan, Candy Box owner and funnyman: “I was down at B52s and really enjoyed it. How often do you see scenes like that

on a Wednesday afternoon in town? I don’t even like football in particular but I was down there for the atmosphere.”

Dan Spencer: “Everyone was getting their face painted as one of the girls had bought some paints from the Party Shop in the Carfax. So I decided to have a St George’s Cross painted on my head!” Graham Russell: “B52s have rented their two televisions from us, the Philips 9 Series, and they

are selling well for us as there’s a good deal on them at the moment.”

Dan Spencer: “There was plenty of singing and chanting, even during the national anthem, and it was good to see the team singing it too. I think they were more up for it and that spurred them on on Wednesday.” Kaytie Harding, Voice from the Coal Shed Choir Director: “I think if the players enjoy the singing

Choirs have an almost telepathic ability to come together and this can work for sports teams as well.”

John O’ Sullivan: “I did sit down at the front and say ‘can we put loose women on?’ But I got booed.

Well, it’s not like his team’s ever going to qualify!

John O’ Sullivan: “That’s the best thing about the World Cup. Everyone is happy, spends more money and we just need to stay in it for a little while longer so we can have more scenes in Horsham like we saw at the end of the (Slovenia) game.”

John Maggs: “I thought Capello got it about right on Wednesday. But I’m not sure about Wayne Rooney his touch is poor and he doesn’t look fully fit. I would gamble on leaving him out.” Robert Burnie: “We had a big screen up at work, and had

Now for Germany!

Continued from Page 5... John Maggs: “I think we have a really good chance against the Germans. They have a good young team and have looked impressive, but maybe it’s too early for some of their players. There’s obviously going to be a huge build up, and the atmosphere is going to be just electric.

Paul Roberts: “I don’t think we’ll have a problem with Germany. I think we’ll win it comfortably. It’s like Brazil - it’s all a fear factor at the end of the day. If you want to win it you have to beat the best anyway.”

John Maggs: “I would give Crouch a go with Defoe. Crouch has proven himself on the International stage and deserves a chance, and I would be

tempted to go with Joe Cole too. He was probably only left out of the Slovenia match because of what John Terry said - as a manager you can’t allow your players to dictate who is picked.”

Dan Spencer: “At the end of the game everyone was really happy as it looked like we had topped the group, but then it went over to the USA game and they had scored. “So we’re facing Germany and then probably Argentina. We’re having re-runs of all the wars!”

Robert Burnie: “The draw is perfect for us (USA) as we have Ghana and then South Korea or Uruguay, where as you guys have to get past Germany and then Argentina.”

John Maggs: “Let’s just hope it doesn’t go to penalties.”

The Big Picture

Jared Cox pitches for his team, the Red Sox at Horsham Junior Baseball Club’s open day on Saturday. The day, held to mark the start of the new season, was held despite new kit being delayed due to those pesky volcanic ash clouds. The day involved several matches between the young players as well as a Dad’s Home Run Derby, where the juniors had the chance to catch out one of their coaches, who in turn were trying to smash the ball off the pitch! Driver hurt in Faygate crash

A 68-year-old man was airlifted to hospital following a collision on the A264 at Horsham. The man, from Horsham, was driving a blue Ford Focus southbound between the Moorhead and Faygate roundabouts, when the incident happened at around 7.50am on Saturday. His car rolled and came to rest on the opposite carriageway. He was airlifted to Kings College Hospital in London with serious injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening. The 51-year-old driver of a black Mitsubishi L200 pickup from Crawley, who was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident, has been bailed until August 15. Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision or who may have seen either of the vehicles in the area in the time leading up to it, to contact 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Beverton.

There’s no doubt about it, it is sad that many of our pubs are not what they used to be. Whether it be because of the financial climate or social shifts, traditional English pubs are disappearing. Some are closing, some are becoming more like entertainment centres with giant flat screen TVs and live music nights, while many are becoming more like restaurants. Brewery firm Hall and Woodhouse has very much opted to take the third option. In February this year, Matt Kearsey became the new director of pubs at the brewery, and he told Dorset paper The Daily Echo: “When you boil it down, it’s about making the business more profitable for publicans.” While traditionalists may not like it, you can forgive any pub that wishes to revive flagging fortunes by focusing on food. We all need to make a living, after all. We could discuss the impact of Hall and

Woodhouse’s stance all day long, but they deserve at least some credit for putting their hands in their pockets and investing in pubs. Here in Horsham, they brewery has invested heavily in the former Green Dragon pub, now called The Olive Branch, while The Boars Head is to be renovated. it is hoped that perhaps both may eventually be as successful as The Hornbrook. However, The Olive Branch (yes, it is a bit of a naff name but who cares, really?) appears to have been influenced more by The Black Jug. Of all H o r s h a m’ s excellent

pubs - and there are many - the Black Jug has arguably found the best balance in terms of being well known for its food while still being a pub at heart. And as you’ll have read in last week’s paper, a pub at heart is exactly what new Olive Branch manager Ben Dalton claims he is running. There’s certainly been big changes at the pub - as you would expect from nearly £600,000 of investment. The layout has remained pretty much the same, as the building dates back to the 15th century so major work is difficult. So there’s still the two part bar area, with the conservatory too, and you still have pictures on the wall of the pub through the ages. But there’s plenty that’s new. You can now, for instance, dine al fresco from the new and very pleasant garden. There is even a fire pit in the garden just Continued on Page 10...

there’s a choice of daily changing specials. Also new are is a range of fine wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks. In terms of appearance, perhaps the most striking elements aside from the garden are the open plan kitchen, fast becoming the must-have fea-

ture of any self respecting restaurant, and a striking new coffee machine, which is roughly the size of Brazil. It does serve notice of the pub’s intentions. As well as serving a good brew, Ben is opening the Olive Branch at 9am for breakfast, which could make it a big hit with visitors to

the town once the new Travelodge opens later in the summer. You can’t help but be impressed, but of course the food needs to be a hit if they are to fill the huge central ‘large party’ table in the Conservatory on a daily basis. We popped down to sample its delights, and for starter to share we tried the meat Pantry Plate (£15.50). It encompasses more of the Mediterranean influence, with crispy bread rather than a soft baguette, along with cured ham, a nicely textured coarse pork pate and fig relish, and a roast chicken tart. There are also fish and vegetable platter options, and it’s of a well balanced size, although if platters are not your cup of tea we would recommend the tart and the pate. However, you may wish to ask for it to be served with a softer bread, which shouldn’t be a problem as The Olive Branch offers a good range of breads, balsamic vinegar and olive oils. You may also wish to consider the Seared Diver Caught Scallops as a starter. This dish is considered the chef’s signature main dish (£14.50), but scallops are a bit of an acquired

taste so you may not consider it for a main. Ben said that, along with everything else, they would serve a smaller portion as a starter if asked. We tried the scallops, served with Celeriac mash, shallots, green beans and a splash of cider, with a side dish of skinny French fries (you can request chunky if you wish!) and the chef’s own ketchup sauce, and found it worked well. The scallops were of a better quality than what you would expect for a ‘gastro-pub’ and the mash potato was soft but not too creamy, and the sauce carried a well judged mix of flavours. The Slow Roast Chicken (£12.50), ordered with Ben Dalton’s recommendation, was again cooked to perfection, with Artichoke mash potato, buttered spring greens, parsley, chives, olive oil and white wine. We tried a couple of desserts at the end, and can only say that you can’t go too far wrong with the chocolate fondant with Purbeck’s ice cream. While we’re on the subject of ice cream, you could do worse than pop along and order a scoop or two while soaking up

the sun in the garden - it’s great ice cream. There’s now a good wine list, of which we opted for the house red - a Cabernet sauvignon de Neuville (£13). It’s a safe choice, but you’ll probably be pleased if you opt to pay a an extra £2 per bottle and go for the Juan Gil Monastrell. Overall, The Olive Branch is an impressive and welcome addition to Horsham’s burgeoning dining out options. The service is efficient and amiable, and The Olive Branch could just tempt you away from East Street’s options. In terms of price, the prices put it among the top end of Horsham’s pubs, with mains priced between £9 and £15 in keeping with the likes of The Hornbrook and Black Jug. The steak, naturally is more expensive with the Pepper Steak £17 and the Fillet Steak £19.50. Like those aforementioned pubs, The Olive Branch is somewhere where you can consider having a sit down meal in comfortable, pleasant and relatively quiet if relatively informal surroundings. Gemma from Horsham presents Glastonbury Horsham girl Gemma Cairney brings us live coverage this weekend from Glastonbury on BBC2 and BBC Friday & Saturday from 7pm

Gemma Cairney the BBC Radio 1xtra breakfast show Co host and presenter of Channel 4 Frock Me grew up in Horsham and was a pupil at Greenway Primary School before completing her secondary education at Millais School for Girls. We caught up with Gemma to have a chat about Glastonbury, fashion and what she is up to now.

So Gemma, you currently co-host the 1xtra Breakfast Radio Show with Trevor Nelson. What time do you get up in the morning? Early! My irst alarm goes off at 5am (I have 2!). A car picks me up at 5.40am. When I get to the studio Trevor and I prepare for the show, which is on air from 7-10am. We giggle, we annoy one another, we debate, we dance, we discuss & interact with thousands of people, we meet our idols & I'm constantly learning the craft of radio. I love being a part of the 1Xtra Breakfast show, it's a big part of my life.

What is it like working with Trevor Nelson? He is an icon! And such a gentleman too. Trevor was awarded a special Gold Sony award in May for being a champion of music & basically a legend of radio! It was so, so, so special.. It was at the end of the night and we had no idea until a huge pic of ‘the Nelson’ came up on one of the multiple screens, then a gospel choir sang to him. His speech was also very special… I cried my eyes out. What time do you inish work? After the show we have a one hour de-brief and I try and leave around11am, but there is still lots to do. I then go to the gym / yoga / a screening of a ilm / pre-record an interview for a future show / have a meeting with my agents or a production company about future projects and sometimes I get to go home and have a little nap!

What in luences inspired you to become a broadcaster/presenter? It was always clear in my mind that'd I'd live my life doing something really creative and I have never imagined it any other way. From writing short stories at age 3, (I used to sit in the kitchen and read them out to my Mum whilst she w cooking) to obsessing over GCSE Drama –

creativity has always been a big part of me. I was very fortunate to have Shirley Springer, now Deputy Head Teacher at Millais School, mentor me through Years 10 & 11 when I was inding it tough and I also had an amazing Drama teacher who encouraged me greatly. Back then I was insistent that I wanted to act. I still feel the progression from theatre training to working in the fashion industry and inally inding my feet as a presenter has all made total sense to me. I have a big appetite for life and all its experiences.

What’s so special about Glastonbury? I can honestly, hand on heart tell you that if you love music, Glastonbury is an amazing experience. It is one of my favourite festivals of the year, it's huge for starters, a sea of tents and happenings that is apparently as big as the city of Bath! Whether you want to learn circus skills, drink herbal teas and discuss how to save the planet or simply watch some gigantic headliners then it's got it all. This year Gorrilaz, Muse, Snoop Dogg, Florence & the Machine, Dizzee Rascal are all playing. What’s your favourite Glastonbury memory? My best Glasto memory: Can't decide whether it was being a backing dancer to Kate Nash dressed as a skeleton on the pyramid stage or watching Jay Z tear it up on the same stage the next evening!

How did you get the job of presenting at Glastonbury? There was no direct path for me becoming a presenter. It stemmed from early ambition, having a big mouth and lots of opinions! Work wise I started out as a junior fashion stylist, not glamorous, I can assure you, it involved a lot of ironing and lugging suitcases of clothes on the tube to various locations. I went on a radio production course and as part of that process I pitched Channel 4 to commission a radio programme called ‘Festival Fever’ with me as a roaming reporter at various summer festivals. I was very fortunate to meet some brilliant people along the way, including Trevor Nelson who introduced me to the 1xtra Breakfast show.

Working for the BBC means I also get involved in other projects too, such as Glastonbury. What is your job at Glastonbury? With Edith Bowman and Reggie on the sofa, I'm there to rove and report from the underbelly for this year’s BBC2 & 3 coverage of the event. I'll be bobbing up and down in some of the various wonders that Glastonbury has to offer.

Last year I did a link from a tightrope at one venue and watched an eco fashion show at another. It's hard to portray the sheer volume of insane activities as it really isn't just about live music. I'm REALLY EXCITED! Xx

Do you come back and visit Horsham? Of course I do! I have family and a lot of friends here. Now that Wabe has inally opened i’m planning a home trip very soon - I love Sushi! And inally… we couldn’t go without asking Gemma one more question… as the Radio1 fashion expert on the Jo Whiley show on Sundays and a Presenter of Frock Me on Channel 4, what are your top fashion tips for summer? Keep it experimental is always my main fashion

Gemma on Channel 4’s Frock Me If you always wear black - try a bright? If you never wear a summer dress - buy one on a whim. Festivals or not, Wedge Wellies add a touch of glamour. Put on a hat, add a feather in your hair, pose in some big sunglasses... Summer is the time to have fun....

Wonder women “So how will I recognise you in the crowd then?”

1,100 brave Midnight Walk for St Catherine’s It would be interesting to see how many men would turn up to compete if it was a male only event. “A few might pass though, staggering home after a night in the pub”, suggested one walker. Well, perhaps that’s a little unfair - after all there was a good number of men who had turned out to help marshal the event. But it’s fair to say that the female of the species does this sort of thing a lot better! Over 1,100 women turned up at midnight in the park on Saturday night to compete in the 13 mile walk around the town centre, helping to raise

£150,000 for St Catherine’s Hospice. Nothing short of an incredible effort. Women accessorised with various head boppers, hats and wigs added a touch of colour to the chilly summer Saturday night, as they walked the course before returning to Horsham Park as the sun began to rise in the early hours of Sunday. The £146,755 pledged will go to support the work of St Catherine’s, which provides specialised end of life care for patients and their families, friends and carers in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey.

First to complete the course were mother and daughter Kelly and Jen Pointon of Bewbush, Crawley who finished in 2 hours 54 minutes, shaving nearly 30 minutes off their time from last year. “My Nan was at St Catherine’s 20 years ago, and it’s just the best cause going,” said Kelly. Taking a much needed stretch at the finish were Rachel Williams and her friends from Horsham, who became best buddies during school and raised £1,000 between them. Continued on Page 17...

Raise the Ruth

Trinity Church Players present The Truth About Ruth on Friday 2nd July at 8pm followed by refreshments; and Saturday 3rd July with a supper at 7.30pm followed by the show at 9pm. This year Trinity Church Players have made changes to its usual format. For over 25 years they have staged a religious musical. These have been very enjoyable and successful, but it was decided this year, that they would like to sing some well known secular songs. In order to this without losing the biblical aspect of the show, leader Jane O’Sullivan and member Chris Tomkin looked closely at the Old Testament book of Ruth. By sticking closely to the text, Jane and Chris were able to find secular, modern songs such as Circle of Life, Send in the Clowns and You’ve Got a Friend fit well with the ancient story. The show is directed by Lynn Andrews, and money raised will be split between Holy Trinity Church and St John Ambulance. The Truth About Ruth will be performed at Holy Trinity Church, Rushams Road. Tickets are available from 262081 priced £6/£3 including refreshments, and £4 and £2 for the show only.

The Half Moon Pub in Warninglid was the venue for the 4th annual cheesecake competition in aid of CHASE on 13th June. There were 25 entries that were all stunning to look at but it was down to the judges - Tristan from Restaurant Tristan, Steve Crane from Ockenden Manor and Alice Chambers from The Essence of Fashion - to make a decision. The Winner was Clare Chambers with her Oreo Cookie Cheesecake. She was absolutely thrilled and is looking forward to eating her prize of £100 at the pub. The total raised was £917. Organiser Alice Chambers was delighted and would like to thank The Half Moon pub, all the helpers and everyone that donated auction and raffle prizes.

Midnight Walk is an uplifting experience Debbie Pickles Participant and event co-sponsor Could it have been the allure of the lycra leggings, sparkly bobble headbands or Danish pastries and tea for breakfast that attracted over 1,100 women to take part in the Midnight Walk in Horsham Park? Maybe ... as it was enormous fun being part of such a huge community event, the largest of its kind in the St Catherine’s Hospice calendar. More likely, however, the women who joined me on the 13.2 mile Walk around Horsham on that particularly cool evening of 19th June were aware that our local Hospice is critically reliant upon individuals and businesses for 70% of its funding.

And we became Women with a Mission! As a holistic massage and beauty therapist, I help to keep clients’ minds, bodies and spirits in tip-top condition. I am ever mindful of the importance of helping ourselves to stay well but ever aware of what can equally go wrong. I took part in the Walk last year because the young mother of a teenage friend of my daughter spent the final weeks of her life in St Catherine’s. It is an extraordinarily special place where teams of consultants, nurses, staff and volunteers work tirelessly to help patients and their families at the most difficult times of their lives. Being enlightened and uplifted by the results of all the sponsorship I received from that Walk, I became a co-sponsor of the main Event this year. I felt humbled and proud to see so many women join me to raise what we will hope will be over 147,000 pounds pledged for St Catherine’s, where all services provided are totally

free of charge. The Midnight Walk is both an amazingly uplifting yet moving experience; it is a great way to get fit, to make new acquaintances, and to share in something which we know, without doubt, will make a difference to someone else. The fundraising team, the volunteers and everyone else who had some involvement with the Midnight Walk on the night, did so with a smile, right through to the dawning of a new day. They gave us encouragement to carry on when muscles were aching, blisters were sore, and

weariness crept upon us. For me, this has been another memorable event and my thanks go to my family, my friends and my ever-loyal clients without whom yet another amazing fundraising success could not have been achieved. As the Midnight Walk co-sponsor, I have some great offers for Massage and Pedicures for all Walkers and participants which will also help directly fund St Catherine’s even further. Phoenix Voices present cheque

Phoenix Voices choir held another short singing session at Ingfield School’s annual fete on 13th June. At the fete choir members were able to present Friends of Ingfield with a cheque for £275, raised through various concerts during the summer. Phoenix Voices is a new choir, and only recently made its first public performance at Sedgwick Park House and afterwards being en-

tertained by Phoenix Voices and friends. Phoenix Voices were joined by the Pickled Lilies, a sextet of ladies who sing acappella and ‘HotPot’ – an acoustic trio of guitar, violin and string bass playing up tempo blues and ragtime numbers between the choral sets. Phoenix Voices organised the event to fund raise for Chestnut Tree House Childrens’ Hospice in Arundel and Ingfield Manor School.

Drainage delay

Work to improve drainage in Hornshill Lane and Tismans Common in Rudgwick, Horsham, started on Monday. The £70,000 West Sussex County Council scheme will involve installing new pipes and gullies to help prevent flooding in the area. Work is scheduled to take up to five weeks to complete, weather permitting. Hornshill Lane, near the junction with Tismans Common, will be closed for the first three weeks of the scheme. Tismans Common will then be close for the last two weeks. A diversion route will be in place. Work will be carried out Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 5.30pm, and Saturdays from 8am to 2pm.

Parking change That’s as close to a smile as you’ll ever get from Andrew Vince, pictured at Horsham Gallery

Changes to parking restrictions in Charlton Street and High Street, Steyning, have been agreed to help reduce congestion. The decision was made by Chanctonbury County Local Committee (CLC). A general increase in traffic volume and the need for larger vehicles to use the road for deliveries led to the proposals. Under the scheme some double yellow lines will be extended and put in place on other sections of the road.

Technically brilliant takes hours and gives me a headache. “For the big architectural paintings you have to be in the right head space. But the work is rewarding.” While Andrew’s work is increasing in value, he may still move away from his current style, expressing a desire to experiment with abstract and textures paintings. Andrew said: “I’m painting what I want to paint at the moment and whatever I sell is a bonus. You need to enjoy what you are doing otherwise it’s not worth it. “I’d love to do it full time but I wouldn’t spend hours doing a painting if my heart wasn’t entirely in it.” A selection of Andrew Vince’s work is for sale at Horsham Gallery. I really like the architectural paintings, and the Brighton Pier and Pavilions pictures are very popular.” Andrew’s distinctive, geometric style was moulded during his University years, when he needed to learn technical drawing. His style was well suited to paintings of buildings, but Andrew was keen to explore other avenues and opted for animal paintings but in the same style. “I incorporate the same styles and I want people to look at the pictures and know it is one of my paintings”, he said. It’s still the buildings that are proving the most popular in terms of sales, which leaves Andrew with a dilemma; it takes a huge amount of time to put them together. “It’s a style that takes a long time”, he said. “I can paint a 10 cm square of canvas and it just

You may well recognise the face from Beales department store in Horsham where Andrew Vince works full time. We’re quite sure he does a good job, but retail is not truly where his heart lies. For Andrew, who lives in Slinfold, has caught the eye with his dramatic paintings of buildings and animals, which have risen in value since being on display at The Horsham Gallery on New Street. His work is among those being shown again this weekend as the Gallery joins artists across the district in opening up their studios for, well, Horsham Open Studios weekends. While you may have heard of or seen work by a number of those involved in the open weekends, such as Angela Brittain, Greg Hart and Anne Ellison, you’ll probably not have come across Andrew Vince before, as he’s not one to blow his own trumpet. In fact, the shy 28-year-old needed the help of his friend, Annie, to get his work in the Gallery. It was Annie who saw the potential and took it An-

Fire service consult plan

A firefighter tackles the blaze at the former Spofforths offices last year, but local services could soon benefit from a new training facility in Horsham

New station for Broadbridge Heath? West Sussex County Council will be consulting throughout the summer on a proposed improvement plan drawn up by its Fire and Rescue Service following extensive research. The plan includes a new Fire Station is planned for Broadbridge Heath which will also include a new Fire and Rescue Service training centre. It is one part of a major shake up designed to update the Fire and Rescue Service and ensure it has the right resources in place to make sure West Sussex is a safer place in the 21st century. Max Hood, County Fire Officer, said: “Much of what we do has changed to reflect the changing risks in West Sussex, but the locations we operate from are largely historic. “Changes need to be made to the Fire and Rescue Service if it is to meet the demands of 21st century West Sussex. “We must concentrate on the areas of greatest risk, and always seek more efficient and effective ways of working in order to achieve good value for money for the local community.” The plan proposes: l Changes to some fire stations, personnel and appliances. l Significant investment in training and facilities for fire-

fighters. l Faster response in parts of the county pinpointed by sophisticated ‘risk mapping’. l Strengthening the Service’s wide-ranging work in the community to prevent fires in the first place. l Making efficiency savings while protecting essential frontline services. Under the proposals, Burgess Hill and Littlehampton Fire Stations will have full time firefighters on duty at the station for immediate response during peak hours. The plan recommends closing three Retained Fire Stations, which are staffed by part-time firefighters: Bosham, Findon and Keymer. There would also be improved crewing arrangements at Petworth and Selsey Retained Fire Stations to increase availability and resilience. Second fire engines will be removed from East Preston, Horley and Lancing Fire Stations, and a new facility at Broadbridge Heath. Max said: “Our firefighters are trained to the highest standards. Indeed, some of our training methods have been recognised nationally as examples of ‘good practice’. “However, our training facilities need significantly updating

to improve firefighter safety and make them even more effective. The new training centre will play a major role and we will also be investing in more trainers and specialist facilities.” He added: “The Fire and Rescue Service of today is not just about answering 999 calls. Nowadays we have a much wider community role. Other proposals include increasing community safety capacity, better targeting of fire safety enforcement and the development of a volunteer scheme. “But I can assure you we will never compromise safety and there will always be firefighters available to respond to emergencies.” The consultation will run for 12 weeks, from Monday July 19th to Friday October 8th. The proposals are contained in the draft Service Plan for 201112 and copies are available in all libraries, District and Borough Council offices, and on request from Fire Service HQ on 01243 753706. The plan and all its supporting documents can also be viewed on the County Council website www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire and residents can take part via public meetings.

wrapped around his shoulders and neck and squeezed.

Chancellor George Osborne delivered his first Budget with a myriad of changes, some of which were anticipated and others unexpected. He confirmed his intention to be “tough but fair” and to achieve a balanced budget by the end of this Parliament. He intends to achieve this predominantly through lower spending rather than higher taxes and proceeded to outline substantial welfare and public sector spending cuts with a 2 year pay freeze for all but the lower paid who will be protected by a £250pa increase and reductions in the welfare measures which will save £11billion per year by 2014/15. Government will encourage local authorities to implement a one year freeze on Council Tax for 2011/12 and pension-

ers will see the annual rate of increase in their state pensions re-linked to earnings next year with a minimum 2.5% annual increase guaranteed. The main changes in the tax system which are likely to affect many of us include an overhaul of the Tax Credit system will result in reductions in tax credits for those earning more than £40,000 with a more targeted approach for the needy and a freeze on Child Benefit for the next three years. VAT is to increase from 17.5% to 20% standard rate from 4 January 2011, with the promise that food, clothing and “essentials” will remain zero rated. The Chancellor has effectively removed 880,000 of the lowest paid individuals from the tax net altogether by increasing the tax free Income Tax allowance by £1,000 to £7,425 from April 2011. A very significant five year reform in the main rate of Corporation Tax starts in 2011 with a 1% annual reduction from 28% this year down to 24% in 2014 resulting in the lowest main rate in the western economy.

For “small” companies, the previously declared increase from 21% to 22% due next year will not come into effect and will now reduce to 20% from 2011. A turnaround in the previous decision to abolish the very favourable rules for Furnished Holiday Lettings which allow these to be treated as “trading income” for tax purposes is very welcome for those who own qualifying property. Businesses will see a reduction in tax relief for capital expenditure on plant and equipment from April 2012. The main rate reduces from 20% to 18% and the Annual Investment Allowance being slashed from £100,000pa to £25,000pa.

The much feared increase in Capital Gains Tax was not as harsh as expected by many. For basic rate individuals, the rate remains at 18% but a 10% increase to 28% will apply for those who pay income tax at the 40% rate. The reduction in Corporation Tax rates is very likely to see a return to the incorporation of small businesses particularly those paying the higher rates of income tax where significant amounts of tax may be saved or deferred. It is somewhat surprising that the ability to "flip" and claim Private Residence exemption on a second home has not been abolished particularly following the MP expenses review.

It’s only three years old, but the Billingshurst Show was a great success on Sunday 20th June. As always, it started with a colourful Carnival Procession which made its way from the Village Hall to the Recreation Ground. Other highlights included a popular

There will be no more village market held in Lintot Square, Southwater on Friday afternoons. The operators have declared that they are unable to continue running the market. Falling customer numbers have lead previous market traders to seek more profitable markets elsewhere. Horsham District Council and Southwater Parish Council were informed of their decision late last week and the last market took place on 11th June. Representatives of Horsham District Council, which owns Lintot Square, are meeting next week, together with Southwater Parish Council, Southwater Action Team and the previous market operators to seek to identify if there could be a solution, perhaps from within the local community that could lead to a

more successful Southwater market. The evening market was quite a radical idea when started in November 2008 as it attempted to bring a market to Southwater at a time and day when people would have most use for it. Anyone in the local Southwater Community who would be interested in helping to re-launch a regular market is invited to contact Southwater Parish Council in the first instance. Garry Mortimer-Cook, Town Centres Manager for Horsham District Council is disappointed the market has closed. He said: “The parties meeting next week are fully aware of the Southwater action plan research which clearly identified the requirement for a local market. “The challenge for us all is to find a market format that the community

will use consistently, that can work alongside the local shops and be sustainable for someone to operate.” A spokesperson for Southwater Parish Council said: “The Parish Council shares the District Council’s disappointment in the loss of the weekly market. “However, it is hoped that it can take a lead in finding a mutually acceptable solution to ensure that the community of Southwater has access to local produce.” Speaking on behalf of Southwater Action Team, Chairman Stephen Chapman said: “We are also disappointed that the market has not been a success. “In the research for the action plan it was the one regular activity that Southwater residents asked for in Lintot Square more than any other. “

Pink Ladies take on Paddlethon www.southwatersports.co.uk

There were strange scenes everywhere you went on Saturday. In addition to the colourful costumes being sported at the Midnight Walk in Horsham Park, the pink ladies took over at Southwater Country Park. Breast cancer survivor Barbra Newman, from Southwater, organised the pink 24-hour Paddlethon at Southwater Country Park which started on the water at 10am. About 50 people took part in the Paddlethon, and there was a great mix of ages, and some men sported pink too in order to take part. As manager of Southwater Watersports, Barbra decided to organise the Paddlethon after she realised there was no such event for people who enjoy paddling. Husband and watersports cen-

tre co-manager Adrian Green said: “For a first event it went really well. We had a lot of youngsters taking part too, which was nice to see, and some stayed in to the early hours to support their parents. “Most of those taking part had already registered but a few decided to sign up on the day.” Initially the event was going to be Continued on Page 29...

a women only event, but Barbra received a call from somebody who wished to take part in memory of a loved one, and so it became a Paddlethon in Pink. While the number of people taking part was not huge, it was a good start - especially as it was held on the same day as the Midnight Walk and the London to Brighton bike ride and there are hopes that the event will be held again next year. Adrian said: “Barbra’s initial reaction was ‘never again’ but I should think that we’ll probably have another one next year.” While there may have been some lonely paddling in the peaceful surroundings of the Country Park in the small hours, there was plenty of activities in the day, with water polo and a slalom run proving to be popular. The event has raised in the region of £1,100 for Cancer Research UK. Sharon Baldwin, Cancer Research UK’s area volunteer manager for Southwater said: “We are absolutely delighted that Barbra and her team have

Olympic dreams Do you harbour dreams of becoming an Olympic champion? If so, a new scheme has been set up to help you achieve your dream. Local Rotary Clubs, schools, Horsham District Council and the charity SportsAid have joined forces to create and launch a new award programme to raise funds to encourage and support young sports women and men to achieve their goals of becoming future champions and Olympians. The fund will be launched on Sunday 25th July at the ‘Sparks in the Parks’ event in Horsham Park with an inter–business sports competition. This competition consists of teams of four people who will compete against each other in six fast moving, easily accessible sports. Each sport will only last for a minute or two per person so the organisers are looking for just four competitive, fun-loving people who can represent your company and bring you success! The sports involved are: • Golf (60 seconds per team

member hitting balls with velcro onto an archery-like target) •Netball/basketball (60 seconds per team member to score as many goals as possible) •Batak (a quick fire reaction game...60 seconds per team member) •Rowing (60 seconds on a rowing machine per team member) •Cycling (60 seconds on a cycling machine per team member) •Table tennis (60 seconds per team member against a table tennis robot) There will be cups and medals for the winning team in each sport and for the overall winning team. Participating teams will pay £25 which will help provide the initial monies for the funds. Businesses wishing to become a business partner of ‘Set for Success’ will be asked to sponsor one of the six sports events, or the overall event. To apply to be a business partner or to find out more about the scheme, please call John Le Rossignol of Horsham Rotary Club on 01403 754005 or email jleross@attglobal.net

Jem helps light up a priceless event It was a case of Bang Goes the Record as BBC presenter Jem Stansfield helped raise £14,500 at The Friends of Ingfield Manor’s summer fete. The Friends were helped to equal their record by the unusual combination of Jem from TV’s ‘Bang Goes the Theory’, Horsham MP Francis Maude, and long-term supporter of the school Dame Vera Lynn. Jem invited children to ask him about any of the science and experiments they had seen on his programme, before he joined Dame Vera Lynn in a tour of the fete. The Horsham Youth Concert Band got things off to a rousing start with their special programme of music for the fete. They were followed by demonstration by Canine Partners, showing how disabled people can be supported by their highly trained dogs They were followed by Phoenix Voices a newly formed local ladies choir, under their new MD Vivien Nichols. The afternoon was rounded off by Belly Dancing by ISIS, an amateur group from the Amberley area. An extra attraction during the afternoon was a fly past by a World War II Piper Cub, flown by Simon

Sakakini

The fete was opened by Jem Stansfield (left) and proved to be a great family day out

Willard. As usual a big attraction was the unique 10¼"gauge steam railway, The Manor Railway run by Chris Knibbs, and this carried more passengers than ever before. Throughout the afternoon was the judging at the Companion Dog Show, run again this year by local supporter Ann Penny, which again was well attended. Mr Alistair Bruce, Headteacher added: “I am amazed at what The Friends achieve. They fund such important special equipment, as well as those ‘extras’ that add so much to the lives of our pupils. To see their hard work so rewarded is very gratifying indeed”. The Friends of Ingfield is a small group of local people dedicated to raising money for the children of Ingfield.

property

Superb Sussex Stud Money talks

Now is a good time to buy a property, but only if a large deposit is used, according to one expert. Stuart Inman, director at MyMortgageDirect, believes mortgages for those with a low deposit are still quite high and so could cost more than a monthly rental bill. "It is easy to say a mortgage is cheaper than renting, but obviously with a mortgage nowadays, you've got a huge deposit which people need to find," he said. Mr Inman was speaking in response to a report from Santander Guy Leonard & Company is pleased to be offering for sale this unique and interesting detached cottage in West Grinstead, at a guide price of ÂŁ439,950. Forming part of the Old Sussex Stud, the property that is offered for sale was originally converted

from the water tower and provides versatile and interesting accommodation on three storeys. On the first floor there is a master bedroom with adjacent bathroom, on the second floor is the guest bedroom with adjacent shower room and on the ground floor there is a sitting room and

study. There is also a good size kitchen and breakfast room. In addition to the accommodation in the main house, there is a separate attached building which provides excellent annexe accommodation, comprising of sitting room, kitchenette, shower

Signing up to Google search

Countrywide, the UK’s largest estate agency and property service Group, has become one of the first agents in the country to list its properties on the new Google Maps property search feature, launched today. The tie-up between Countrywide and Google will further extend Countrywide’s online presence and help its network of 1,200 offices reach the growing number of buyers, sellers, tenants and landlords using the internet to make their next move. The news coincides with several key developments on Propertywide, Countrywide’s latest online innovation. The website provides a single platform for Countrywide’s properties and services, with dedicated sections on estate agency, lettings, surveying, conveyancing, mortgage and insurance services. Countrywide in Hamptons sale Countrywide has announced the acquisition of Hamptons International, and rights to expand across key locations including the UK, Europe and Asia. The agreement includes the global business operations of Hamptons International, one of the premier international residential agencies, and its network of more than 80 branches in the UK and overseas, with rights to further expand the world‐renowned brand globally. The acquisition forms a key part of Countrywide’s strategic plan to further expand into the prestigious high-end property market, following the recent purchase of the Sotheby’s International Realty franchise in the UK. Grenville Turner, Countrywide Group Executive, said: “This acquisition is a major breakthrough for both companies – they are a perfect fit.

“We identified that Hamptons International offers a key growth opportunity and we recognise the quality of its brand, its people, its branch locations and international credentials. “Countrywide has a proven track record of growing and investing in strong businesses, which speaks volumes in terms of what we can offer Hamptons International. This acquisition will extend our market coverage and support our plans to capitalise on the opportunities in the prestigious high‐end property sector.” Hamptons International will continue to operate as a business in its own right and will join Countrywide’s network of 1,200 offices and 43 leading estate agency brands, which includes John D Wood & Co., and Sotheby’s International Realty. Shakeel Barok, Acting Managing Director of Hamptons Inter-

national, said: “This news marks an exciting new era for Hamptons International to continue to expand and diversify our business. The strength and breadth of Countrywide’s services and infrastructure will enable Hamptons International to continue to drive its vision and business strategy forward. This collaboration highlights the value and reputation of the Hamptons International brand within the market. “There is strong synergy between the two companies and I look forward to working together to extend our market reach.” The sale was agreed with Dubai‐based Emaar Properties, which will continue to operate Hamptons International in the Middle East and North Africa, with Countrywide owning the rights to expand globally.

The Americans are getting on their high horse about the ‘British Petroleum’ oil spill, and rightly so, but somebody should remind them that they’re hardly world-leaders when it comes to creating a better world. JATO Dynamics reports that the US car market is still significantly behind Europe and Japan in terms of reducing vehicle CO2output. JATO’s study reveals that the market’s average CO2is 268.5 g/km. This figure compares very unfavourably to Japan (130.8 g/km) and Europe’s five biggest markets, which average 140.3 g/km. All markets have improved marginally when compared to the full-year average in 2009.

The 19-inch, white-finished alloy wheels will be available at £500 to bring the visual impact of Ford’s fastest Focus even closer to that of Mikko Hirvonen’s 'company car'.

Mercedes GP – one the newest F1 teams in the pit lane will mark its return with Nico Rosberg in action, as well as Goodwood hillclimb speed record holder Nick Heidfeld. Red Bull is sure to be a Festival highlight, especially with Mark Webber at the wheel. Also at Goodwood will be both Lotus drivers and the Williams team. Porsche 908 02 Spyder in action at the Targa Floria

And this is how that ‘69 Spyder looks in colour...

Porsche’s need for Speed Yes, I know, we’ve gone a bit crazy on Goodwood Festival of Speed this week. But let’s face it, compared to the usual motors stories about the latest special edition colour schemes of the Skoda Yeti or something, this is a bit more relevant. At least some f you will be going to Goodwood. Besides, how could we ignore these old images of beautiful Porsches? Porsche will once again showcase an exciting array of new, iconic and historic models at this year’s Festival of Speed

on 2nd to 4th July. In keeping with the Festival’s chosen Viva Veloce theme, the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart will be bringing some of the victorious sports cars from the Targa Florio road race in Sicily, as well as the Porsche 917 to celebrate a significant Porsche motorsport anniversary - 40 years since the 1970 win at Le Mans. The rare 804 Grand Prix car from 1962 will also be demonstrated, as part of commemorations of 60 years of the F1 World Championship.

These iconic models will share the spotlight with some all-new Porsche stars. The Festival sees the debut of the fastest-ever Porsche, the 620 hp GT2 RS, in the Supercar Run alongside the new GT3 RS. The new Porsche Cayenne range will also be on display, and in action, in the Porsche Experience area. Porsche successes at Le Mans, the Targa Florio and in Formula One celebrated With an unbeaten record of 16 victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours race, the reputation of

Porsche has been founded on success in the demanding high pressure, high speed motor sport environment. The iconic Porsche 917 scored the first Le Mans win for the mar-

que in 1970, and this year Porsche celebrates the 40th anniversary of this achievement

by demonstrating the number 23 winner at Goodwood. ,

motors A new, class-leading V8 diesel engine, new 8-speed transmission, two significant Terrain Response® upgrades and subtle external styling enhancements are amongst the features on the new 2011 Range Rover – on-sale in the UK from late September.

The LR-TDV8 4.4-litre with parallel sequential turbocharging replaces the outstanding LR-TDV8 3.6-litre and is unique to the Range Rover. The all-new LR-TDV8 combines superior power and massive torque with unparalleled levels of refinement. Despite the extra per-

130mph Range Rover revealed

formance, this V8 engine is cleaner too, delivering even lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than its predecessor. The combined cycle fuel consumption of the new LR-TDV8 4.4-litre is 30.1mpg. The new diesel engine is helped in this respect by its marriage to a

new, electronically controlled, 8speed automatic. This combination is enough to catapult the Range Rover from rest to 60mph in a mere 7.5 seconds and complete the 50mph-70mph dash in just 4.0 seconds while the top speed increases to 130mph.

First glance

These are the first official pictures of the new Astra Sports Tourer, which will receive its debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show in September and hit UK showrooms by the end of the year. The Sports Tourer will be the second model to join the new Astra range, which has now sold over 28,000

Great recovery for Royal Utd

After gaining the title at the Worthing Town tournament two weeks ago, it was now for Royal United to try and conquer the Lancing Rangers tournament. Despite a rather disappointing start, losing the first and drawing the second game, things started to improve for Royal United in the third. The 4-0 win was much needed to lift the spirits and that continued as United won theirfourth and fifth games. The last game of the group stage only produced a draw, but was enough to take the local lads through to the quarter finals. Unfortunately, this game was tarnished by a bad decision, but Royals took their opportunity and managed to win the game 3-2. It looked like extra time was on the cards in the semi finals but Morgan Spooner volleyed home to put Royals into the final. The final was against Hove Rivervale, the team Royal United had lost to in the first game. Despite numerous chances, their keeper kept them in the game and the score line stayed 0-0 and went into extra time. Against the run of play Hove took the lead in the second period of extra time but just as the team had shown all day, Royals fought hard and Morgan levelled the game with a minute left to play and took the game to penalties. Royals keeper Tom Baxter managed to save three of the Hove penalties and Jack Frankland and Jack Woolgar Leigh scored to give Royals the victory.

Baseball club on an upwards curve The Americans may never learn to love the game of ‘soccer’ but it seems we are becoming more receptive of baseball. Particularly here in Horsham, where our Junior Baseball Club has become one of the very best in the country. The Club has so many youngsters, aged from five to 16, that they are able to run many teams, all kitted out in the colours of some of America’s most famous teams such as Mets, Yankees, Red Sox and Athletics. On Sat-

urday the club held an open day at the club’s home turf - the Ben Vodden Memorial Pitch at Ingfield Manor School, Five Oaks, and the scene was reminiscent of parks the length and breadth of America on a Saturday morning. In addition to the matches, the grown ups joined in the fun by taking part in a Home Run Derby. It ensured a couple of the youngsters enjoyed the experience of catching out one of the coaches, but the youngsters had no chance with a couple of efforts by head coach Robert Burnie which sailed way over the boundary!

Horsham Junior Baseball Club has a playing membership of more than 200 youth members, making it the largest junior baseball program in the UK, and the club are always looking to broaden its membership. The club lost some of its members last year and there was a drop in numbers, but there has been a resurgence in recent weeks. Coach Robert Burnie said: “We are seeing about five new members every week at the moment. It’s just word of mouth, you lose a bit of the old and welcome in the new. “We play all of the games within Continued on Page 71...

Two good wins for Bowls team

It’s been another good week for Horsham Bowls team, with two victories and one defeat at the hands of Hurstpierpoint. Horsham entertained a touring Easton side from Norfolk on Friday and recorded a 38 shot, 152-114 win. A warm, cloudy day was perfect for playing bowls and the visitors enjoyed the bonhomie of their hosts. Winning 4 rinks out of 6, Horsham had a top rink of Mike Parr, Angela Machell, Allan Robertson and Doug Locke (+28) with the Captain’s rink another high scorer(+18). In the first round of the Border League Cup, Horsham had a resounding win against the Newdigate, winning by 18 shots. The tie was played on a home and away basis, the Horsham team of Barry Baillie, Allan Robertson, Mick Norris and skip Dennis Tribe winning by 17 shots at Newdigate, while the home team of Robbie Calder, Doug Locke, Martin Jolliffe and skip Paul Jolliffe recorded a single shot win. But Sunday was a disappointing afternoon for Horsham, as they lost by 38 shots away to Hurstpierpoint. It was though a pleasant afternoon with good company. Well down at tea, Horsham could not respond, but did have a winning rink of Malcolm Randall, Michael Bright and skip Doreen Buckman (+4).

An adult baseball team may also be formed next year after a false start this season, thanks to a number of sixteen year olds coming through the club and looking to move into a senior league. Hopefully by then, the team will have all of its new kits. Uniform was held up by the volcanic ash clouds recently!

Members of Horsham Lawn Tennis Club served up a treat to shoppers by bringing the tennis club to the Forum in Horsham. LTA Licensed coaches Glyn Jukes and Tessa Walder brought a number of junior players with them as they prepared to show off their tennis skills to onlookers as part of a promotional event for the clubs forthcoming open day. Club Coach Glyn Jukes said: “With Wimbledon such an important part of the British summer we thought we would bring a taste of the tennis club to the town so the general public can get a feel for what we do and see some of the talented juniors we have coming through. “Tennis is a sport for all as it can be a social low impact sport, or a fast moving, physically demanding game but whatever level you play its equally enjoyable and we would like to see as many adults and juniors getting involved and the open day provides the perfect opportunity to try for free.” The Horsham LTC open day is running on from 10 am on Sunday 27th June where there will be a ball machine, serve speed gun, plus opportunities for adults and juniors to play with members in a social tournament. Participants can come and try out the bar and use the club facilities. Any new adult member who joins the club on the day will receive five free group coaching sessions and pay no joining fee. For more information call 01403 254628 or Glyn Jukes on 07789725333 or visit the clubs website at www.horsham-tennis.co.uk

Paddlethon is Oarsome Picture: John Lines

Southwater Country Park was the venue for a new charity event on Saturday morning. A number of young members of Southwater Watersports Centre joined in a 24 hour Paddlethon. The kids enjoyed plenty of on-the-water-activities, but it was mainly the grown ups on the lake during the small hours. For a full report see news pages
