THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 7

At this time last month I told you how a fall on the ice had me suffering a bit and was limiting my ability to function. Well things have gotten progressively worse since then and culminated with me spending four days in the Hospital. The injuries to my left arm were a given. The X-rays, Ultra sound and MRI defined them quite clearly. The only thing left to determine there was when the Orthopaedic Surgeon could see me to establish when the torn tendons and muscles could be reattached, repaired and rejuvenated and how long the rehab process should take and then just deal with it from there. There wasn’t much more I could do with it other than adjust and have others do what I could not. We now have the capable young Jordan on board with us to do photography and other yet unspecified duties and with along him with our newly minted, advertising sales guy Scott, and between them we have two very strong backs and equally sharp minds to fill the void produced by this unfortunate incident. What wasn’t clear and was causing me a great deal of pain, discomfort and distress was the injury to my ribs or chest as no one other than my Chiropractor, Axel (Chiropractor on Main St. Newmarket) who was dealing with it as best he could and even he, was limited as to what he could do. The X-rays showed no breaks or cracks so any concerns I had were being discounted as something minor or just my imagination. I knew they were not but my concerns largely fell on deaf ears. The main problem was that I simply couldn’t breathe properly. My chest hurt like Hell and after many frustrating and infuriating trips to the Doctor I was issued an inhaler that produced very limited tangible results but it was at the very least, something in that it acknowledged that there was something fucking wrong here! I knew that I was deteriorating as could now only walk perhaps fifty feet or do one flight of stairs before becoming extremely exhausted and would have to stop and rest before carrying on. The simple process of putting on my boots wore me out and warranted celebratory high fives from the ever watchful “Wonder dogs” who are my constant companions when I’m home and seemed to sense my agony. The big problem now was that we now had the Motorcycle Spring Show to do and while I knew I really wasn’t up to the task and the wise move from a personal health standpoint would be not to go but that was not really an option, as it quite simply, had to be done. Like the old saying goes ”The Show must go on!” and I was the man in charge!

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 8

I knew that I would be useless other than as a driver and it was my truck and trailer. We had a good sized crew on board for loading unloading and set-up at the show so we carried on but by the end of the show I was getting weaker and my breathing was even more laboured and restricted and I could now only walk about ten to twenty feet, maximum before having to stop and regain my breath and it was taking longer to recover at each of these intervals. Packing up was a real bitch as I could do very little to help and was more of a hindrance than anything else and Managing Editor Al was having troubles of his own (From a previous serious illness!) getting his legs working but we managed to get the Trike, Al’s mobility scooter and all our gear loaded and secured the best we could and headed for home. Thanks to Peppermint Patty for hanging in with us until the end and to the other vendors like the crew from Snow City and Quinn’s for pitching in to help. I was real glad to get home and get the truck and trailer in the driveway safe and secure. Any unloading would have to wait. I just wanted to get in and try to settle in. That was not to be. My discomfort level was through the roof and I knew what my next course of action would be. The Southlake Hospital is practically in my back yard but I couldn’t walk there and didn’t want to drive so I called a cab to shuttle my sad old carcass to Emerge where they admitted me and one of the nurses made the promise right off the hop, that they would have me feeling better soon. Given how I felt and my luck at getting anyone to understand that I was not doing very well and from where the discomfort was coming from, I was sort of sceptical.

What followed was a four day stint of being prodded, poked, probed and filmed internally from both ends, stuck with many, many, needles and had several IV lines running both independently and simultaneously sending various fluids, drugs and whatever coursing through my veins and I filled many urine receptacles to the brim in a short period of time. An MRI of my chest and abdomen revealed fluid in my left lung and my hemoglobin counts had dropped from the normal 140 down to 68 and I was now literally gasping for air at the slightest exertion. They ended up giving me three blood transfusions and I was finally starting to feel better and regain my colour. They still haven’t identified where I was allegedly bleeding from but I am now out and about once again feeling better thanks to the efforts of a fine crew of nurses, Doctors and crew at Southlake Hospital. Everyone was so damn good, friendly and sincere and they made good on my first nurses promise that they would have me feeling better. I am still waiting to hear from the Orthopaedic Surgeon to schedule repairs to my left arm so I am still off from my truck driving job at Canada Cartage and extremely limited as to any physical work I can do around here but as you can see, I can still work a keyboard as long as I can stay out of the Hospital long enough to do it. The Trike has all of her body parts back on as my buddy Jabber from Jabber’s Airbrush Studio got the flames painted on the lowers and they look spectacular! It is going to have to be modified to a hand shift/ foot clutch set-up if I’m going to ride this year. While I can reach the bars, my left arm can’t move any further than to grasp them straight on. My buddy Bronson is on the case. Quinn’s Calendar Shoot First off, I love coming to this shop! Quinn and company are some of the warmest, nicest people that I know and their humour and great attitudes make for a great time, every time, so when they agreed to be the Calendar feature once again I was thrilled to make the trip to Welland. Quinn had lined up a model of his own so all I had

to bring to town was myself and our photography equipment and our new resident photographer, Jordan Starr to make it all work as I have now been officially relegated and downgraded to transportation only with some writing duties thrown in! We rolled in to find the crew in their usual good spirits and Jordan set to work. The model, Samantha was amazing and I knew that we would again be faced with hard choices in selecting the final shots for the feature. I got updates on what work had been done to the shop since my last visit and plans for knocking down walls and expanding

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 9

their space even more were revealed. Their resident ghost is still present and still hasn’t been trained to perform any of the janitorial duties that the guys wish he would do but they are still hopeful. Jordan is far more professional than I when it comes to photography (I have never claimed to be anything other than just an old guy with a camera, willing to take whatever pictures are necessary to get the job done.) and he makes great efforts to lay out backdrops and use proper lighting and his getting good results are based on knowledge, proper settings and all kinds of technical criteria rather than my just take a whole lot of shots and I’m bound to get something we can use method. His method takes longer though so it makes for a long day. We got done and realized that we had not stopped once all day and were well overdue for a break and some sustenance before making the trip back to Newmarket. Quinn recommended a spot just up the Street from his shop called

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 10

Fuzzy Logic and he was right on the money! The food was spectacular and the beer (No not 50!) was ice cold and the combination of the two had us revitalized and refreshed in no time and well prepared to make the trip home. Thanks to Quinn and Company once again for your fine hospitality and the pleasure of your company. Motorcycle Spring Show 2016 As mentioned earlier in this article I was far from being up for this show, health wise which was disappointing as we had been planning for it for a long time and had more stuff going on in the booth and were taking up far more real estate at this show than we ever had at any previous shows. Who knew that fate would deliver such a challenge to work around but work around it we would and we would do the best we could with what we had. We had a good sized crew coming down and joining our resident bunch of myself, Al, Scott, Jordan, Peppermint Patty (The Mag Hag, Manon and Sticker Chick couldn’t make it) for the show with Our Northern Guy, Guy and the lovely Julie making the trip down from Sudbury, Sherri O’Irish, Little Red and her man Mike, Bad Bob, JR and the star of the Show, Sr. was making an appearance on the Saturday. Beau and his crew from Ottawa were down but set up in another Hall promoting their “Busted Bucket Challenge” that they are doing along with Pace Law. The show was to start earlier this year which allowed us no time for our traditional preshow breakfast at the Airport Grill as we had a lot to do to get the booth ready for the show such as wiring the lighting and such. They had changed things up dramatically this year in that we were no longer at our favourite spot up in Hall one but down in Hall 2 as were all the Show bikes and attractions along with the stage and beer garden and while we were not exactly thrilled with the spot we were assigned as the changes were a complete surprize to us and the crowd flow was way off what we are used to, but we made the best of it as we had little other choice. My health issues were definitely cramping my style and while I did still wander the through the show taking in the action and checking things out it was at a much slower pace and required many stops along the way. This was a shame as there was so much to see and do and I do love these shows. Kim Coates of Sons of Anarchy fame was back once again and still attracting large crowds of fans and he was as magnanimous and obliging as ever. There were some awesome looking

motorcycles on display with some of the best builders in the Country, like Speed Trix, Steve Schuler, Quinn’s, Motorcycle Enhancements all bringing out their very best and competing for trophies and cash prizes along with bragging rights. One thing that is always special to me is to see what comes out of the irrepressible and very active imagination of Monte Carlos this time, as he always has some of the most unusual motorcycle creations that I have ever seen on display. He again, didn’t disappoint as he led me through to where his latest offering was proudly displayed. It was a true “Woody” Chopper in that it was made entirely out of wood and was capturing the interest of many attendees. I managed to track down a couple of pretty young ladies to pose on it for him. There were some fantastic club displays throughout and

representatives for a myriad of rides for every charity imaginable present from all across the Country and all vying for the attention and support of the same group of riders. There were tons of vendors such as Gord and Company from Black Gold up in Newmarket doing great business with his fine assortment of products. There were vendors there to satisfy any of your biker needs and interests and beyond. Health products, cleaning products, leather goods, products to clean your leather products, insurance companies, lawyers, custom painters, hydro graphics people, upholsterers, sound people, parts, t shirts, warm weather gear, cold weather gear, wet weather gear, footwear, headgear, helmets,

Rocco from Authentic Cycle in Markham, Phil, Krystle and company from PD Restoration in London and it was good to see big Art from A &K Recreation out and about once again with his usual large assortment of treasures and I wish both him and his wife well in the health challenges that they have faced and that they are yet to face. There was a large used bike market with a good assortment of

gloves and a whole lot more. Classy Chassis, as usual had a great display up in hall one and had already sold a five of their bikes when I talked to them early Saturday afternoon and were on track to sell even more by the end of the show so it was really proof positive that these shows are well worth the time and effort it takes to come out and set up. Then there was the expanded “Picker’s Market” with tables overflowing with used parts and accessories being poured over by bikers searching for some part to complete or start a project or just keep an old scoot on the road. Fred Hale and family were out in force with their huge selection from their store “Strictly V Twin in Pefferlaw. Vendors come from all over to participate in this like

bikes up for sale. Then of course there was the ever popular Terez Leather Fashion Shows that run at various intervals throughout the run of the Show. I wandered off around 6:00 PM, heading home to get some much needed rest but the pain in my chest and the whole breathing thing had taken its toll on me and I really wasn’t looking forward to yet another day of this and especially with the dreaded tear down and packing up process ominously looming at the end of it all. Up early the next morning we took the time for breakfast at The Airport Grill before heading over to the show where we hooked up the trailer and staged it in the lineup for the close of the show then made the long hike inside to our booth. I wandered from there getting pictures and chatting with various friends and acquaintances along the way and set a leisurely pace for myself. I ran into one of my favourite people along the way. The Massage Lady with the magic fingers and stunning personality whom I discovered at a show a few years ago and have sought her out at subsequent shows since just because she can work the tension out of my back and shoulders and stop that annoying, incessant twitching of my head at least temporarily. What I brought to her chair this time was more than even her magic touch could handle but she did manage to take my mind off it for a while. The day sailed by and it was time to do the awards portion of the show so I hauled a chair over and positioned myself favourably to get some good shots of the happy winners. When I got back to the booth tear down was well under way but I knew that I would be of little help other than to go to where the truck and trailer had been staged and waited my turn to get into the building and then the snow began to fall and the winds picked up!.................. Perfect! All in all it was a good show and it was a good time but I wish that I’d been more up to the task. And less of a pain in the ass to all concerned……myself included! Thanks and apologies to all! See you next year.

Its spring time to ride, with the calendar as it is the first few weeks of May are going to be hectic at best. I make my usual feature shoot trip at the end of April or at least after the release of the May mag and this is true again this year although it will be the third weekend of April and all of those who are on my calendar have been contacted. If you are on my list and have not been contacted your name is being handed off to Critter for future consideration. I never envisioned ending my feature shoots but then when I handed The Mag off to Critter a few years back I did want a fresh set of eyes and ideas. Well taking the mag to the next level was not something that I ever considered based on my experience as a national sales rep for decades and understanding the realities of the geography of Canada, but then it’s not my decision. So I do need two bikes to round out my year I have a guy with what’s sure to be a sweet vintage ride but it’s not ready for when I wanna do my shoot and I am also in need of a special construction bike. To be clear a special construction bike is a ride either in a non Harley frame or a heavily altered Harley frame, it must have American iron no rice burners accepted. With the last day of April being a Saturday the B.R.O. Niagara Cover the Kids Run and the Fort Erie Swap Meet will reverse their traditional order. As the kids run is always the first Saturday of May and the meet is the first Sunday it stands to reason that one follows the other well not this year and it is a rare occasion but it does happen and this is the year. I would dearly like to ride to the Fort Erie Swap Meet but I am bringing senior to his traditional spot to hand out mags for a few hours and that requires the old Ford pick up. I will however definitely be riding in the annual Cover The Kids Run and my bikes are both ride ready and insured I just need to remember to put them damn stickers on the license plates. I have historically forgotten this little item in the past but only a short blast down the street before the thought of oh shit comes to mind and I wheel around and fix it. Hot on the heels of these consecutive weekend events is the only Friday the 13th of the year. I had grand plans of head-

ing down to my place on the lake near Dover and doing some work on the exterior of the cottage but I didn’t count on winter showing up in southern Ontario in April after being absent from November to March right? So I will be down in Dover my traditional Thursday through Saturday and after my epic fail last year with titty shirts I have all the shirts from 2015 to move. I know we have a following of ladies who come out and look for us each year to get their “I bared my boobs and all I got” shirts so you can find me in my usual spot somewhere around the front of the Royal Bank near Powell park on my blue road glide, you know I will be the guy with the shirts and camera doing what I have been doing for time immemorable. Ladies supplies are limited so first come first served is the rule although I do have a rag tag collection of previous years models I usually have stuffed into my saddlebags so if I actually run out I do have some backup. Although I am being put out to pasture on the feature shoot front unless I am told otherwise by the current brain trust it does not mean I am going away just doing less stuff right? I still have my paper route which covers the north end of Hamilton and Burlington/Oakville which are my stomping grounds these days but I will also continue to cover selected events as directed or requested so I have a lot to keep me busy even if I am stepping back from features. See you out there on the road.

From a brainstorming idea to a nation wide movement across Canada, Motorcycle Awareness Month will continue to draw awareness to motocycle safety across this country for the month of May. Originating in 1986, this will be the 30th anniversary, a landmark in the movement and proof that small ideas can transform into action which undoubtedly has saved many lives in the motorcycle community. You can send your thanks to Boz over at Boss Automotive Repair in Ottawa, who can be credited (among others) for starting it. The Kick-off Cerimony is being held at Ottawa City Hall April 24th, 2016 with the Reading of this year’s Proclamation claiming “May is Motorcycle Awareness Month”. The Festival Plaza opens at 9AM, with official speeches starting at 10AM. Over 3 decades ago, 8 motorcycle clubs in the Ottawa area started sharing information about proposed dates for charity rides and other events, in order to avoid duplication and increase turnout. Organically, conversations around

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 14

how to enhance safety in the community arose. Fast forward through the huge support of SOAR (Society of Ottawa Area Riders) to move the conversation forward into the mainstream, the concept of Motorcycle Awareness Month was quickly adopted by the City of Ottawa and corporate supporters such as Canadian Tire, Husky and

CAA (Canada Automotive Association). Today, many organizations, companies and groups celebrate and push the concept of motorcycle awareness every year in May, as motorcyclists dust off their bikes to hit the road and motorists re-adjust their driving habits to accommodate motorcyclists after a long winter. One such event is the 2nd Annual Motorcycle Awareness Campaign, put on by The Lake Huron Steel Horse Riders motorcycle riding club, in Conjunction with A.B.A.T.E of Ontario Inc.(Association of Bikers for Awareness, Training and Education). It will kick off on Saturday, May 21st in several communities in Southwestern Ontario with local businesses supporting it by allowing use of their parking lots for motorcyclists. Local Police, Fire, and EMS professionals will show support by demonstrating their life saving skills in select locations, in the hopes they will never need to use to them. Members will also be handing out information with safety tips, such as the Look Twice - Save A Biker’s Life brochure. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month . . . Is it really? . . . Is the message of motorcycle awareness reaching our targeted audience? . . . Sure, all bikers know May is Motorcycle Awareness Month but – What about the four-wheeled (or more) motorin’ public? . . . Are they more aware because we profess that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month? . . . Or are we only promoting awareness of motorcycles to motorcyclists? Let’s back up a tad – This is a column about biker’s rights, Eh Ollie? Damn straight it is! And the one inalienable right of all bikers is the right to enjoy ridin’ your machine with the reasonable expectation that both bike and rider will return home in one piece. How do we set about raising awareness? One of the most successful awareness campaigns, achieved by the OCC, is the awareness messages posted every spring to “Watch out for Motorcycles” emblazoned on the overhead digital signs located on the highways around the GTA. The Ministry of Transport, by its own volition, also places other notices over the course of the summer reminding motorists to be aware of motorcycles and to give motorcycles space for maneuvering and braking etc. Like me, many of you live in rural areas which are, in themselves, problematic to get out the message of motorcycle awareness. The restrictions of not being able to deliver your awareness message to your neighbors are a major hurdle. But they can be overcome with a little perseverance, dedication and persuasion. All areas have

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 16

community centers, Military Legions, local government offices, high schools, and many other public spaces that feature a bulletin board. These are the places where you can place a simple message or graphic (downloadable from the Internet) proclaiming that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Perhaps your local newspapers will publish your message via a Public Service Announcement? Make the effort to inquire. Or perhaps you and the riders who live in your area would contribute to a one-time notice which would be broadcasted via your local radio station? Ask your local church to make an announcement to the parishioners. And remember to lay off the profanity – it alienates the sensitive natured people while diluting the seriousness of the message. The possibilities are numerous and should be explored because many bikers residing in rural areas are involved in accidents every year. It is not just a phenomenon specific to urban areas. Brings to mind the awful memory of the accident which claimed the lives of three 1st Cav members - Military men who survived the ravages of conflict only to fall victim to impatience and a lack of awareness while simply enjoying a beautiful outing in my County. Word of mouth, jungle drums, petite repartee; these are timeless methods which could be used to deliver and discuss the importance of motorcycle awareness. If all of us endeavor to contact all of our non-biker family and friends

with the message that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month then many will be conscious of the message. Going forward throughout the month of May, all of my texts, emails and any other personal communications will begin by proclaiming that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. If you’re in my database then you can expect to receive some form of announcement of awareness. Wars kill soldiers . . . and that’s why their called campaigns Accidents kill bikers . . . and raising awareness of same is also a campaign. On a weekend back in March, the Ontario Confederation of Clubs and Independents held its 5th Annual Conference in Niagara Falls Ontario. The event brought together speakers (me included) who offered valuable insights regarding many issues which are impacting the biker lifestyle. One of the speakers, Gerry Rhodes, Provincial Government Liaison Officer for the Bikers Rights Organization, Ontario, Incorporated, who, along with other BRO members (Hey Gazoo), has been pushing the Ontario government in an attempt to amend the current penalty guidelines, as designated under Section 214 of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, which, if passed, would implement stiffer penalties regarding failing to yield to oncoming traffic (the infamous left-turn scenario) offences charged under the Highway Traffic Act. Thanks the efforts of these activists we now have Bill 154, a private members bill, presented by Wayne Gates, NDP MPP. This bill was developed over 13 years and is a testament to the perseverance of this group of Freedom Fighters. It is the intention of Bill 154 to beef up the fines and penalties for “where it has been determined that the contravention resulted in a fatality or serious debilitating/maiming injury.” The Bill has managed to pass the second reading and vote - and has now been recommended to the Committee on the Legislative Assembly. All of which brings me to my point – this bill needs publicity and awareness. The membership of the OCC are conducting an email correspondence campaign (there’s that word again, Eh Ollie?) to their various MPP’s informing them of Bill 154 and requesting their support to get this bill passed into law. This is where you come into the picture – we are requesting your assistance in this matter by asking that you email your MPP and spread the news about Bill 154. Not a letter writer? NP - Go to www.occ4u.org and visit the ‘Information’ page. There you will find copies of generic letters (designated by political party affiliation) for you to download and copy into your email once you create a salutation and place your name on the document. Not sure exactly who is your MPP? NP – Go to http://www.ontla.on.ca/lao/en/members/ and visit the ‘Current Members’ page where you will find your MPP listed according to the riding where you reside. It also wouldn’t hurt to copy the Premier’s office while yur at it. It’s that easy!!! The whole exercise should not take you more than 30 minutes - but what’s 30 minutes of your precious free time if it causes politicians to be more aware of the plight of bikers, Eh Ollie? Not everyone is cut out for activism but most of us possess a social conscience, particularly when it comes to motorcycle fatalities. I, along with many of you, am filled with rage whenever I see a motorcycle accident reported on the evening news. Nothing is more repugnant to me then the specter of a twisted piece of two-wheeled junk lying on its side. Some accidents can’t be prevented but we have to get out the message ‘cuz it just might cause a reaction - which could prevent another unfortunate loss of everything crucial to a biker’s family anxiously waiting at

home. Currently, there are over 632,000 motorcyclist licensed in this province – we are many but we are disorganized and plagued by the ‘grazing sheep’ affliction whose side effects are inaction and an aversion to change. It’s a phenomenon unique to 21st century values. Mostly it is spread by the constant degradation of our lives by the dogs of the establishment, who value little beyond the acquisition of personal wealth. There is an antidote and it’s called activism. Commit just one example of activism by backing Bill 154 and you will immediate reap the beneficial effects of attempting to make social change. It will certainly re-establish your homo-sapiens status and forever extinguish any desire to keep on grazing. Roostah Rider aka Larry Lilly www.occ4u.org OCC Treasurer Rooster Rider

Clare’s Spring Open House 2016

by Rose

Clare’s HD® of Niagara Spring Open House by Rose On March 12, Clare’s had their annual Spring Open House. In March you never know what the weather is going to be like and this year it was a great day for riding. When I got there around 11am, there were about a dozen bikes parked here and there. At 2:30 when I was leaving, I counted around a 100 bikes in the parking lot.

What can you say about an open house? It is an opportunity for old biker friends to see each other since last riding season and talk about this year’s plans for trips and runs. I met up with the usual suspects from different clubs around Niagara and beyond. Quite a few Lincoln Ctny MC members were there promoting their summer Show and Shine. Some clubs already have their flyers out for this riding season and are spreading the word. Bruce Bissell was no exception, but he had new info for us in regards to Biketoberfest®. Biketoberfest® is going to be held at the Welland County Motorcycle Club at 603 Netherby Rd. in Welland. Like the last 13 years, there will be a draw on a bike. This year it is a 2016 Street Glide Special and new this year is a 2nd prize of $1000. On Friday, there is the Ride of the Flags and free camping is available Friday and Saturday night. On Sunday, there will be a poker run. Bruce has been trying to get a weekend package put together for Biketoberfest and it looks that this could be the year. One thing I noticed was that the line up for the central cashier for clothes, accessories or gifts was really short compared to at Christmas.

The line up at the parts department, however, was extra long and slow with having to look up part numbers and such. People were buying chrome, oil, filters and parts for their bikes to get ready for riding season. I met Sully who was happy to tell me he bought a new HD® trike and was proud to say “Still alive at 75!” I wanted to speak to Randy but he was busy selling a new bike so I caught up with Mark. I wanted to know how things have changed since Deeley is no longer in the picture. Mark couldn’t be really specific but said the prices of bikes are down in 2016 so bike sales have been good. The prices of parts and merchandises have been adjusted. The Company is still using the same distribution center in Toronto, but with direct shipping the turnaround time is quicker. The big news was that Clare’s purchased a large building right next door to Angelo’s in Port Dover. They plan on being ready for Friday the 13th in May, with HD® making it a pin stop for HOG® members. Friday night cruise nights will also start at Clare’s in Dover this summer. Hope to see you in Dover soon and go well.

A.B.A.T.E Charity Pool Tourny 2016 ABATE’S 5th Annual Charity Pool Tournament

by

Irish

8 ball, cold beer and a cool venue – throw in 100 plus shooters, bikers and their supporters and it’s a win for kids with cancer. The 5th annual pool tournament on March 19 was hosted by the Provincial Wing of ABATE. It had one goal raise money for Childcan.

More on CC later, if you have never attended this event you definitely want to mark it on your calendar for next year. I arrived around 10:30 and thinking, Man I’m way too early. Nope! I pull into the parking lot of Hustler Billiards in London and it’s jammed with cars, trucks and a few bikes. Some of the boys are outside enjoying the sun and havin’ a smoke. Now I’m thinkin I fucked up the time - I’m not early, I’m late! I eventually found a parking spot and made my way to the entrance. On the way I nod hello to a few members and pass by a guy already on BBQ duty. Inside there’s at least 100 people, the registration table is busy, guys and gals are at the bar shootin’ the breeze – others are getting in a few practise rounds prior to the 12:30 start. There had to be 16 pool tables all nicely arranged with lots of space for players. Very professionally done. It was right around then I noticed the 30’ prize table. It was jammed with quality donations for the 50/50 draw. At another table, I call it Control Central, sat the Ladies from ABATE. They managed ticket sales, handled all the cash and smiled a lot – not an easy thing to do considering the large number of people. I’m thinking to myself these guys have their shit together. Horse from ABATE Woodstock is my contact so I tracked him down. The man knows everyone which was evident as we made our way thru the crowd. He introduced to most everyone in the place. ABATE boasts 10 Provincial Chapters with about 200 members and a great many of those in attendance. The boys were also supported by a good number of MC’s and the general public. Ernie from Hustler Billiards (not the magazine) donated the room and tables. Eventually we take a break from the Meet & Greet and Horse fills me in on their efforts to raise funds for Childcan. He tells me CC was established in 1974 and is a Registered Canadian Charity based in London, Ont. It provides financial, emotional and social support services for children and their families diagnosed with cancer at children’s hospital, London (LHSC). They do not receive gov’t or United Way

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 20

funding. He adds, that back in the day members liked what we saw in CC and decided to step up ‘cause the last thing parents need to worry about is finances.” In the last 5 years the provincial wing of ABATE have raised thousands of dollars through their pool tournament and dig this “every nickel raised is donated to CC. “ Proceeds are disbursed by CC, they in turn provide parents with free hospital parking passes, gift cards from local pharmacies and gas stations. There’s even financial assistance available for medical travel to the US. We have all been affected by cancer, be it family or friends, but it’s particularly hideous when it affects a child – consider this; 10,000 kids each year affected by cancer in Canada. 1 in 5 kids die. 2 in 3 suffer long term effects. 5 is the average age. To learn more go to www.childcan. com It was a great day, I met new people, learned a few things, the beers were cold and I ate the best freakin’ venison burger period !!! Too bad I had to drive or I’d still be there. Abate members are generous and caring people. Case in point, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners donated their winnings to the more than $4000 raised thru registration and 50/50 draws. ABATE members are also motivated and approachable. So don’t be shy the next time

you meet a biker wearing an ABATE patch. Say hello, pat ‘em on the back and say thanks. And hey if the mood strikes you make a donation towards the great work they do in the community. They’re also a registered Canadian Charity. The next big ABATE event is the 26th Annual, “The Final Frontier” July 29th to August 1st. For event info call Chico 519 477 4365 – Surf 519 282 2978 – Horse 519 983 5324. Later, Irish ****if you’re not living on the edge, you’re takin’ up too much room****

One for the road

Finally!! The babies have been removed from their bedroom and all shined up! I’ll be honest, when Mother Nature teased us with some spring-like weather in late March/early April, we snuck them out for a little spin. And to my shame and horror, they acquired a dirt-like substance on the body that I pray to Jesus was mud when we tore down our road. Good thing my Christmas present included a huge detailing box of goodies for just such an occasion! With the balmy temperatures teasing like a cherry on the tongue, we decided to trek out to the Toronto Motorcycle Spring Show and try and dig up some goodies for this riding season. And to my surprise, it didn’t take long to open the wallet and release the moths in order to spend a little on the bike necessities. We don’t spend much on big ticket items, except when it comes to the motorcycles. And I’ll be honest, my splurge was for total vanity reasons….let me explain. If you’ve been following along (and I hope that you have) you’ll remember that I recently acquired a pretty little number that is a Harley Davidson Softail. This little piece of heaven has an added accessory that would be a red alligator seat. So when walking aisle by aisle, a particular item caught my eye. I’m not one to entertain the idea of a hat, but this hat was something. Kangaroo leather with red snake-skin! What better way to hide the biker hair! What better way to

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 22

…..with Lil Red

add to the bike that is the ‘gator! And when Mike saw the look on my face, he said anything that puts a smile on my face like that is not even up for discussion. So walking in to this little booth, we met up with what I’m guessing is father and son. Both Azeem and his son were eager to answer questions regarding the hat, the fit etc., and even to pose for a pic. And I’d like to add, with the service and knowledge of these two gentlemen, I wouldn’t hesitate to suggest you visit them at Naeem Jee Canada for any leather adornments that you require. Moving onto the rest of the show. Mainly, The Riders Mag booth. I’m gonna be shameless and say this was a big booth this year. With mags, shirts, pins, pocket knives and the ever popular trike that is owned by our very own Critter, this booth was in the centre of everything! I made my way over to say hey to Critter and Al, and again pose for a photo op (hey, you can’t get these gentlemen alone long enough for a pic so I’m being selfish again!) However with the little time that we had for the show, we decided to make our way around to view the rides that were up for trophies, as well as some other ‘interesting’ booths. By interesting I’m referring to the booth that looked like it was advertising an electric chair! I charged over to get a better look, and still, it looked like something that belonged in a prison as opposed to the bike show. After walking around it for a minute, I had to ask the guy what it was all about. It was for the Acer Cold War Museum. Part of ACM adventures allows you to strap yourself into an actual jet! This was a jet seat! Well yeah I sat in

it. That’s the closest my ass is getting to being in a jet (or taking flight for that matter) so I’ll take it! Mike had wondered off, and after he found and collected his fix from the pepperoni stand, he was off to see a leather guy that just so happened to have a pair of brown stressed leather chaps. Almost exact to match to his new Indian motorcycle jacket! (Did I mention he’s looking to add to our harem of bikes and bring home an Indian motorcycle?) After trying them on (I never get tired watching him slip into his chaps. Ladies, get a pic of your man topless in jeans and chaps!) he bought em and we were off again! Like I said, we were strapped for time so we had a lot of ground to cover. Plus, with running into groups of riders and stopping for a chat and a photo op, you find it takes a lot longer to get where you gotta be! Back to The Rider’s Mag booth. I took a little bit of time to try and slide mags in everyone’s hand that walked by and noticed that someone else was looking to buy a shirt! (you should get yours cause they’re selling!) At these shows, there’s a ton of parts booths located throughout, so it can take a while but you just might find what you need for a little project. Plus, there was a little project that I wanted to see. A 2016 Woody Soft Pine model bike! You heard right. A red steal frame was all that there was to it, along with the pine throughout (seat, V twin motor, tires etc.) And this model attracted a lot of attention, maybe not as much as the Hooters girls, but hey, they were made of boobs, which involves another type of wood!! Now just to get back to the ‘gator. I’ve been looking to add a little something to the tank (as well as a patch to my jacket). What I’ve wanted is to

get a pin up girl on my tank. There were a lot of vendors here that stroked that creative idea just nicely. Now just to find an artist to pull it off! (With perhaps a tattoo to match!) Now we had to get back home to the 705 cause there is a lot going on. With helping the Quinte Ride for Paws girls (and by the way, if you got a mag out our way, there’s a good chance Tam was involved) She is literally putting them in car windows, mailboxes and every hand that has a set of bars between em.) For the Ride for Paws, they’ve now added a parts tent among their vendors at the event, so this thing should get huge! Summer is coming, events are beyond crazy, and one more event that I’m excited to be a part of is the All-Ways Apsley Motorcycle Rendezvous. This event will have a DJ, vendors, games, food and a show n shine. Riders Mag is sponsoring the Tug of War as well as the Best in Show. They even have cover for your ride should it rain unexpectedly. This should be a really cool event and with yours truly helping to MC the event, I can say that you should be well entertained. As always, if you have an event that you want our little Mag of heaven to attend in the eastern 705, drop me a line.

Madam is by now absolutely intrigued, having seen nothing like this in all her years of operating a brothel. She hasn’t done the bedroom work herself for a long time, but she did it for many years before she got into management. She’s sure she has said yes at one time or another to everything a man could possibly ask for. The challenge is irresistible. She just has to find out what this man has wanted that has made her girls so angry. And she sees a chance she can’t pass up to show off to her employees how good she was at what they do. So she goes over to Bob and says that she’s the best in the house and she is available. She sits and talks with him. They frolic a bit, giggle a bit, and drink a little, and she sits in his lap. And Bob leans forward and whispers in her ear, “Can I pay in Canadian dollars?”

Bob, a middle-aged Canadian tourist on his first time in Lincoln, Nebraska, locates the red light district and enters a large brothel. The madam asks him to be seated and sends over a young lady to entertain the client. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit, and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear and she gasps and runs away! Seeing this, the madam sends over a more experienced lady to entertain the gentleman. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit, and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear and she screams, No!” and walks quickly away! The madam is surprised that this ordinary looking man has asked for something so outrageous that her two girls will have nothing to do with it. She decides that only her most experienced lady, Lola, will do. Lola looks a bit tired, but she has never said no and it doesn’t seem likely that anything would surprise her. So the madam sends her over to Bob. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit, and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear and she screams, “NO WAY, BUDDY!” smacks him as hard as she can and literally runs away!

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favour of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth. She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harboured an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his. One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school. Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn’t even have time for a boyfriend, and didn’t really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying. Her father listened and then asked, “How is your friend Audrey doing?” She replied, “Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She’s always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn’t even show up for classes because she’s too hung over.” Her wise father asked his daughter, “Why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.” The daughter, visibly shocked by her father’s suggestion, angrily fired back, “That’s a crazy idea, how would that be fair! I’ve worked really hard for my grades! I’ve invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!” The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, “Welcome to the conservative side of the fence.” Once inside the bank shortly after midnight, their ef-

The robbers opened up a second safe, and it also contained nothing but vanilla pudding. The process continued until all safes were opened. They did not find one pound sterling, a diamond, or an ounce of gold. Instead, all the safes contained covered little bowls of pudding. Disappointed, the robbers made a quiet exit, each leaving with nothing more than a queasy, uncomfortably full stomach. The newspaper headline read: ‘IRELAND’S LARGEST SPERM BANK ROBBED EARLY THIS MORNING’....

forts at disabling the security system got underway immediately. The robbers, who expected to find one or two large safes filled with cash & valuables, were surprised to see hundreds of smaller safes throughout the bank. The robbers cracked the first safe’s combination, and inside they found only a small bowl of vanilla pudding. As recorded on the bank’s audio tape system, one robber said, ‘At least we’ll have a bite to eat.’

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and her driver were cruising home along a country road, in Southern Ontario one evening when an old cow loomed in front of the car. The driver tried to avoid it, but couldn’t. The aged cow was struck and killed. Premier Wynne told her driver to go up to the farmhouse and explain to the owners what had happened and pay for the cow while she stayed in the car making phone calls. About an hour later the driver staggered back to the car with his clothes in disarray. He was holding a half-empty bottle of expensive wine in one hand, a huge Cuban cigar in the other, and was smiling happily, smeared with lipstick. “What happened to you?,” asked Kathleen . “Well,” the driver replied, “the Farmer gave me the cigar, his wife gave me the wine, and their beautiful twin daughters made passionate love to me.” “What did you tell them?” asked Premier Wynne. The driver replied, “I just stepped inside the door and said, ‘I’m Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s driver and I’ve just killed the old cow.’ The rest happened so fast I couldn’t stop it.” Bob walked into a sports bar around 9:58 PM. He sat down next to a blonde at the bar and stared up at the TV. The 10 PM news was coming on. The news crew was covering the story of a man on the ledge of a large building preparing to jump. The blonde looked at Bob and said, “Do you think he’ll jump?” Bob said, “You know, I bet he’ll jump.” The blonde replied, “Well, I bet he won’t.” Bob placed a $20 bill on the bar and said, “You’re on!” Just as the blonde placed her money on the bar, the guy on the ledge did a Continued on page 56

As I sit here on the deck on my new country home listening to the world waking up, I can’t help but smile as finally spring has sprung in Northern Ontario. It’s hard to believe that just over a week ago, we were buried under 10+ inches of cold wet snow that was dumped on us in a period of just 24 hours. Simply amazing how Mother Nature suffers from schizophrenia going from one extreme to the complete opposite in such a short time. Reminds me of some people I know….lol…actually, quite a few of them…hahaha!  Riding season is finally here but beware out thereof all the hazards such as sand, debris, cagers… etc. Don’t let eager take over your common sense and make your first ride of the season be your last…. International Spring Motorcycle Show As usual, this event had everything under one roof that you can imagine. Fantastic swap meet on top of a numerous motorcycle enthusiasts vendors. We would like to recognized our family and friends, Linda Jim and Greg, who generously accommodated and fed us a delicious dinner consisting of a 15 pound (yes..15LBS!) amazing lasagna, creamy Caesar salad complete with crispy buns ;) and topped off with a decadent homemade alcohol drenched smothered cheese cake! Your hospitality was greatly appreciated, Thank You! It was great seeing Critter and Al as well as the rest of the Riders Mag crew. All of which I couldn’t even start naming them as the numbers are going up at a considerable rate. It makes me proud to be involved with such a top notch group of people. We even saw a few familiar faces from Northern Ontario like Derek from the RedRum First Nation M/C who came out to enjoy all that the show had to offer. Just goes to show that Northern Ontario is alive and well in the motorcycle world. Speaking of Northern Ontario, now that mother Nature has come to her senses, the weather co-operating, a couple of biker friendly events have been confirmed to be added to your calendars so pay attention… First off, The Elliot Lake Motorcycle Rally is put on by our good friend Mark Hutchinson along with the famous Fireside Bar & Grill. This event promises to be bigger and

better than ever before with beer tasting and give away, live music, food vendors, piercing and tattoo artist, door prizes scavenger hunt and much, much more! Come and join us on June 4th in Elliot Lake on the main road. You can’t miss it, see you all there! Another yearly event that’s returning this year is the very scenic Ride Manitoulin on July 15-17th in beautiful Providence Bay on Manitoulin Island. They now have online registrations set-up as well as a beautiful new website at www.ridemanitoulin.net for you to go and check it out. I will be there reporting again this year and will have more in the next edition of the Mag in regards to this event. Save the date …. Not to be missed! Both these great events have Facebook pages to be found and liked to stay updated to their latest news and reports. For those without a Facebook account, not to worry as I will keep you up to par with any changes that might occur right here in the Mag. Remember, you can have your events advertised and reported on as well, complete with pictures by simply getting a hold of me at << ThatNorthernGuy144@gmail.com or by text at 705-662-1526 to book your spot so you don’t miss out on this great opportunity. I also would like, at this time, welcome Rose from the New Liskeard area, that will be part of our great team here in Northern Ontario. Joining Roger from Manitoulin Island, Mark from Elliot Lake, Dave from St-Joe’s Island and not to forget Roger from Sault St-Marie to whom I still have to go meet and get set up in that area of the north. The Riders Mag is spreading it’s wings throughout Northern Ontario and it’s amazing to see how many great people we have out here helping. Thank you all for your dedication to the Mag and to help promote the lifestyle we all enjoy.

They finish and it becomes just an ordinary instrument again when placed in ordinary hands. Individually their tool chests are not any different than those in our own shops and professional shops from everywhere and anywhere. They are filled with tools that in

Owner Chad opened this Studio in 2014 after his now, neighbour, Tiny`s Cycle and ATV purchased this great piece of property right on Hwy 21 in Port Elgin and needed a Tenant for some space he had available. Both parties recognised the natural correlation between motorcycles and tattoos and an agreement was reached and Chad set about doing renovations and created what is now a great space from which to offer his award winning designs and is a perfect fit and compliment to Tiny’s great shop. It is not only tattoo aficionados from this area who benefit from the talent and skill that have brought much well-earned acclaim and recognition in the industry. People travel great distances to have Chad perform his magic and custom design a unique tattoo for them that will reflect their individuality. This place really defies definition and cannot be pigeon holed and is proof positive that Chad is no one trick pony. He boasts a massive portfolio of tattoo designs that is ever expanding and can really deliver that special individual “Made just for you piece.” The studio itself is amazing and I’m quite sure that my very first expression of “Wow!” has been uttered many times before and will be repeated many, many more times in the future. That is just coming through the door, even before you get to wander and check out all the incredible works of art, posters, statuettes and collectables that have been so tastefully placed throughout the entire studio. The “Wow factor.” has certainly been achieved here and it is a very welcoming, comfortable space to say the least and Chad and his crew, apprentice Alexa and beautiful girlfriend Amanda “Inkternalbeauty”, the in house shop

model. They are very personable and make you feel comfortable. Chad started his apprenticeship under tattoo artist Al Zimmerman at Tattoos by Zap up in Owen Sound in 2004 and learned a lot and continued to learn and perfect his natural talent and skill under his tutelage. As his own reputation and client list grew he decided it was time to spread his own wings and opened his own successful studio in Port Elgin in 2007. It almost goes without saying but only high end, top of the line, state of the art inks, and sanitation equipment are used here. This is more than just a Tattoo Studio but a gallery and a tribute to art and those who create it and those who truly appreciate it. Chad is not merely a tattoo artist but an artist with a real passion for his craft. It is just the love of art for art’s sake, working in a medium that allows him to express himself. Chad also has another friend and mentor in the area by the name of Vince Goodeve who has developed a wellearned reputation as an airbrush artist on a worldwide scale. He has some of his work adorning the walls of this studio and the two exchange art, ideas and draw inspiration from each other that feeds the artist’s lust in each of them. As any artist knows, you can never achieve perfection as each work of art is just another step towards the unattainable. Inkternal Custom Tattoo is an inspiration to anyone who appreciates not just tattoos but art itself and is being run by some great people and is a perfect fit with Tiny’s Cycle and ATV Shop as they complement each other and they work together to hold some great events such as the famed “Fish Fry” that draws people from miles around and is being held again this year on May 7, 2016. HELMETS AGAIN At the spring bike shown on April 10, someone asked me a question about helmets so here goes. The question was whether is it legal to attach a Go Pro or similar type of camera to your helmet. The simple answer is “no”. The explanation provides a rationale for that rule but also gives some insight into our legal rulemaking process. Unlike many of the issues involving insurance that I will be talking about, regulation of helmets appears to be fairly uniform across Canada so these comments may apply in other provinces. Check your local laws to be sure. In Ontario section 104 (1) off The Highway Traffic Act provides that: No person shall ride or operate a motorcycle... on a highway unless the person is wearing a helmet that complies with the regulations and the chin strap on the helmet is securely fastened under the chin. (As a side note: subsection 104 (2) provides that the operator of the motorcycle is responsible for ensuring that any passenger under the age of 16 years wears the proper helmet. So if you carry a passenger under 16 years old, the helmet is your responsibility.) Note that section 104 (1) specifies that the helmet must comply with the “regulations”. The Highway Traffic Act is primary legislation meaning it is enacted by majority vote in the legislature. A regulation is subsidiary legislation which may be passed by the “Lieutenant Governor in Council”, in other words by the minister without a vote in the legislature. The regulation in question is referred to as R.R.O. 1990, Reg 610 and deals with “Safety Helmets”. There are two requirements stated. Section 1 of regulation provides that a helmet worn when riding a motorcycle on a highway shall: (c)have a hard, smooth outer shell lined with protective padding material or fitted with other energy absorbing material and shall be strongly attached to a strap designed to be fastened under the chin of the wearer; and (d)be undamaged from use or misuse. The second part of the requirement is in section 2 which requires that the helmet comply with one or more of the following standards: (a) Canadian Standards Association Standard D230 Safety Helmets for Motorcycle Riders and shall bear the monogram of the Canadian Standards Association Testing Laboratories; (b) Snell Memorial Foundation and shall have affixed thereto the certificate of the Snell Memorial Foundation; (c) British Standards Institute and shall have affixed thereto the certificate of the British Standards Institute; (d) United States of America Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 and shall bear the symbol DOT constituting the manufacturer’s certification of compliance with the standard; or (e) United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Regulation No. 22, “Uniform Provisions Concerning the Approval of Protective Helmets and of Their Visors for Drivers and Passengers

of Motor Cycles and Mopeds”, and shall have affixed thereto the required international approval mark. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 610, s. 2; O. Reg. 102/12, s. 1. So we see from the regulation that the helmet must have a hard smooth outer shell and comply with one of the listed standards. However the question remains whether these requirements apply to the helmet as initially purchased or also prevent us from making any modifications which would change those qualities or compliance of the helmet. In order to answer questions about interpretation of legislation we look to the court decisions that have interpreted the legislation. As you are probably aware, all provinces in Canada except Quebec are based on the common law system where the law is established by previous court decisions often referred to as “precedents”. The leading case in Ontario is the case of R. v. Bott, a 2011 decision of a Justice of the Peace in Kitchener. In this case the defendant Ian Bott and attached a “helmet Mohawk” consisting of a plume of soft strands attached to the helmet by suction cups. It was purely decorative. He was charged with failure to wear a helmet which complied with the applicable requirements. The Justice of the Peace reviewed the above sections in The Highway Traffic Act and the Regulation. The JP then went on to review the standard from the Snell Foundation and referred to the following passage from the standard: Cosmetic changes to certified headgear are permissible. Such changes are generally limited to marking or trimming the headgear with manufacturer approved paint or tape. Otherwise, modifications to certified headgear effectively create new configurations which shall not have the confidence and certification of the Foundation until properly evaluated. Manufacturers must not place the Foundation’s certification label in any modified headgear without the Foundations written Authorization…. The Foundation recommends that helmet owners not modify or contract with someone else to modify their helmets. Any structural modifications may adversely affect a helmet’s protective capability. The Foundations

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 35

certification and, quite likely, all manufacturer warranties apply to the headgear only in its as manufactured conditions. The JP also quoted from the U.S.A. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (DOT) certification which states: Rigid projections outside any helmets shall be limited to those required for operation of essential accessories, and shall not protrude more than 0.20 inch (5 mm). The labeling instructions require instructions to the purchaser which they make no modifications. The JP acknowledged that the helmet crest could not be defined as a rigid projection. However he was not convinced that the various standards would permit the helmet crest to be added simply because it is not a rigid projection Based on the foregoing, Justice of the Peace found that the crest added did not comply with the applicable standards and found Mr. Bott guilty of driving without the proper helmet. This initially struck me as ridiculous. What harm could be caused by a soft plume attached by suction cups. However, there are a couple of things to bear in mind.

First, the court can only make a decision based on the evidence before it. In this case the crown introduced the evidence of the various standards that applied. Mr. Bott, who was self represented, did not introduce any evidence to suggest that the addition of the helmet Mohawk, even though it was soft and easily removable, did not violate the spirit and intention of the various standards. The JP was not prepared to simply assume this without some evidence. Naturally, the institutions that establish the various standards have to take the position that no modification (unless it is obviously harmless such as paint or stickers) is acceptable unless and until they have seen the specific modification and had a chance to test, or at least consider, whether it makes any difference to their certification. I doubt any of them would invest the time to test for suitability of a helmet Mohawk. On reflection I think the decision may make some sense. From my review of various studies on helmet safety it appears that the primary source of injury is not a direct blow but from oblique or angled blow which causes the helmet to turn or rotate with significant acceleration. Remember that your brain is floating inside your skull in a sea of cerebrospinal fluid. However there are various blood vessels and other connective tissues attached at one end to your brain and directly or indirectly to the skull or other fixed structures at the other end. When a helmet strikes the ground or other object at an oblique angle it will tend to rotate with extreme acceleration. The skull will accelerate in the same direction at a similar rate to the helmet. Obviously the brain floating inside the skull will not accelerate as quickly. This results in tearing of the blood vessels and other connective tissues which between the brain and the skull. Modern helmets are designed to try to minimize this effect but the results aren’t great. Obviously anything which is attached to the outside of the helmet, whether hard or soft may tend to increase the rotational effect by catching on the ground or other obstacle, creating a higher risk of worse injuries.

Does this decision represent the law in Ontario? At this point the answer appears to be “Yes. But bear in mind that this decision was made by a justice of the peace who is the lowest level of judicial officer in Ontario. Accordingly, it would not be a binding precedent on any higher level in a provincial court or superior court justice. Therefore it is possible that this case could be overruled by a decision at a higher level court. Plus, it is always open to a court to make a different decision based on different evidence before it. So if the next defendant in a similar case can introduce evidence to prove that the helmet Mohawk is permitted by the standard that applies to the helmet, the decision might be different. Having said that, in my opinion, this decision makes sense and I would not expect it to be overruled. So push the envelope if you want. I’ll just err on the side of caution and do without the Mohawk. On the subject of helmets a few other points. I need my brain to make a living so helmet safety is of interest to me. There was an article in Motorcyclist magazine several years ago which published some research and opinion which challenged the Snell Foundation premise that the outer shell should be designed for maximum stiffness. The testing referred to in this article indicated that in fact a stiffer shell transmits too much energy to the brain resulting in greater prospect of injuries in most cases. A softer and more flexible shell absorbed more energy rather than transmitting it to the wearer. The New York Times later reported that the author of the article, Dexter Ford, was fired by Motorcyclist magazine following negative reaction from the Snell Foundation. If you want to look for the latest and apparently best information on helmet standards and safety, go to www.sharp.direct.gov.uk . This site publishes the results of comprehensive helmet testing carried out by the British government. However be careful with the translation. If the helmet is compliant with the Snell standard (which is not generally used outside North America) it will not be the same as the helmet tested by SHARP. Finally, there was an article in the March or April, 2016 issue of Sportrider about a new helmet concept. The helmet line is referred to as D6 and they have designed a new system which is intended to avoid the effects of the rotational type injury. You can Google D6 helmets for more information. In the meantime, please check out my blog on my website at www. bikelawyer.ca or at www.timleighbell.com and please send me any questions that you want answered in future columns. Finally, remember that none of the comments in this column are intended as legal advice but only for general information. If you have a question involving legal consequences consult with myself or any other lawyer for legal advice before you act.

Well it’s official, winter is over, even though Mother Nature isn’t cooperating, the Iona chapter of the QMC held their second annual “End of Winter” bash in Dutton on March 26th and they put on a great spread. I can’t remember the last time I had such a great meal. The prime rib was just perfect and all the trimmings, all prepared by the club, just excellent, and absolutely enough food to feed a small army, if anyone left there hungry it was their own fault. The bash was well attended by QMC Amherstburg, and QMC Thamesford, as well as HAMC,, HMC, Iron Horse, Iron Sirens, Iron Dogz, Phantom Thunder and Booze Fighter s. The weather that day was good enough for some to actually ride, while the rest of us either drove or got bussed

there. Music and dancing, great door prizes, and to top off the entire evening a chance to meet and greet members of other clubs, and get ready for the upcoming riding season. In my opinion this is a must attend event for anyone in the area, and I’m sure next years’ event will be even bigger and better, so come on out and meet some really great people. I will be sure to notify everyone through the Mag of the date for the next event. The North Wall Riders’ Association is celebrating its’ 10 year anniversary this year. The association was founded by Dan Hayes on January 1, 2006 in Windsor Ontario, and in 2009 another chapter was founded by brothers Kevin and Roy Ellis in Hamilton, Ontario known as the Steel City chapter. Their vision then is still what they stand for today, a group of motorcycle riders dedicated to supporting all Veterans functions and raising awareness of Veterans throughout the motorcycling community. They are an association made up of individuals wishing to support our military veterans and do so while enjoying the freedom they have fought for and continue to fight from the back of their motorcyles. They are men and women riding together to raise awareness of our military veterans and the life they leave behind, so that we all can live our lives free from oppression and tyranny. They ask that you never forget the great costs and human suffering during war and peace keeping missions so that we may be free. FREEDOM ISN’T FREE. Each year on the Canada Day weekend the North Wall Riders’ Association organize the “Run to the North Wall”, which is the Canadian Vietnam Veterans Memorial, donated by the Michigan Association of Concerned Veterans on July 2, 1995 to honour Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Forces during the Vietnam War, and was erected in a waterfront park in Windsor, Ontario, where it can be plainly seen from the United States. The run starts with a breakfast at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 on Howard Avenue, and ends at the North Wall. This years’ ride will be July 3, and will mark the 21st anniversary. Staging begins at 9:30 kickstands up at 11:30 sharp. They also sponsor a run the Afghanistan/U.N. Peacekeepers memorial in Windsor, the run will start at the Royal Canadian Legion branch 261 in Tecumseh, Ontario with a breakfast, and ends at Reaume Park in Windsor. This years’ ride will be on September 11 marking the 3rd year. Breakfast will be from 8:30 until 10:15, kickstands up at 10:30 sharp. If you happen to be in Windsor, or, if you would like to plan a vacation in the area, I hope you stop by and join in the riders, and show your support for our Veterans. These dedicated men and women tirelessly devote their own time and as efforts to supporting Veterans causes, and as well hold 2 fundraising dinners each year to raise funds to support Veterans causes. They also visit Parkwood Hospital in London, Ontario twice each year to visit with the Veterans, and help out. If you would like any more information, or if you are in the area and would like to speak with some of them, please feel free to contact me through the Riders Mag

These stories I’m submitting to the Riders Mag for the Adventures in the Deep South section have been told to me and I find them entertaining, so I’m sharing them with the readers. To quote Mark Twain “never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn” … I’ll take that as a licence to embellish and exaggerate to enhance the story as I see fit. The names in these stories have been changed to protect the innocent, the guilty and the inebriated. Please keep in mind that bad decisions are the roots of all the best stories so send me a few ingredients that I can add to story recipe and I’ll add some bullshit to it. thedeepsouth@theridersmag.com The adventures of The Rascal & The Brat This One Time at Port Dover Rascal and his ol’ lady had a turbulent domestic to the point that he felt it better to leave the campground of at least thirty friends that had reserved spots for camping. Rascal is a 270 pound biker, who blocked out as much sun as a bruin would. His head filled with mostly good intentions and more than a few beers already, he walked up the hill and over the bridge and headed into town to have a few beers and chill out. All was fine, as he pub crawled from place to place running into old friends and tipping some pints with them until the end of the night when he was exiting the last pub. Rascal was not just a 270 pound large man in stature but also the girth of his belly stood out in a crowd and in this case his belly exited the bar before the rest of him. He had his head turned as he left to say goodbye to his pals at the bar so he didn’t see the three cops walking abreast toward him from the left and the cop nearest him bumped right into Rascal’s belly. The cop was knocked down and while he’s lying on the sidewalk Rascal stumbled and landed on top of him… then the big man began to laugh. The cops didn’t find the humor in the situation at all. Rascal could have apologized forever and that would not have satisfied the cops. Of course they couldn’t let this go… oh no, they couldn’t let a few thousand bikers see one of their guys have that happen to them with no repercussions. So next thing Rascal knows he’s in handcuffs and being hauled to the tank. That night at the campground, it was in the wee hours that Rascal’s ol’ lady starts to ask the campers “where the hell is Rascal”. To this nobody has an answer. Six AM comes and we still can’t answer that question. Just as a search party was being formed Brat’s cell phone rang. On

the phone Rascal tells Brat to come get him. “Where are you?” Brat asks. “In Jail” Rascal replies. This information was relayed to the friends at the campsite, the news was met with some hesitant laughter and a few “oh ohs”. Brat starts up Rascals HD Fat Boy and rode into town to get him. Upon arrival at the town jail Brat gives Rascal some advice. “Just do what I did with my ol’ lady, when she asked me for chapstick I gave her crazy glue instead, she hasn’t spoken a word to me since.” The Brat made Rascal ride bitch on his own bike back to the campground. The End Pirate

MAY REPORT Finally, as I write this month’s column, most of the snow is gone and I have the charger on the bike. Barring any other shit, the Boss and I will be out in the wind tomorrow! I have to start with last month’s deliveries. Usually my 800 copies of the Mag arrive at my door via Purolator, but last month turned into an adventure! It seems P.E.I Billy (whom I have never met) was visiting the Toronto area and volunteered to deliver my bundles on his way back to Spud Island. Sounded like a good idea at the time as it would save the Mag a bundle of expense in shipping charges. Unfortunately Mother Nature (the bitch) didn’t like that plan! Poor Billy got snowed in, frozen rained in and fallen treed in, and it took him about 3 days to chop his way out of T.O. So to save time on Billy’s already late schedule, we agreed to do the transfer down in Moncton, as the “shortcut” to our place would have put him on the famous (in this part of the Province) Renous (Hwy 108) which is about 150 Km. of a poorly maintained logging road at the best of times, and after a 14 hr. drive wouldn’t be in his best interest. So, off to Moncton, booked a room and met up with Billy at a pre determined Irving Gas Bar along his most direct route. Needless to say, we connected made the switch of Mags and Billy carried on for another 4 hr. drive to his base. I swear in the old days, drug drops were pulled off smoother! But thanks to Billy it got done! THE BLACK AND GOLD SWAP MEET I got an invite to the Black & Gold meet down in Fredericton and spent a day visiting it and checking out some of the goodies that several vendors were selling. A few bikers were in the lot on my arrival but I was informed that there were about two dozen that braved the weather to be there, but left due to the declining weather conditions. Estimates say there were about 500 in attendance and bags of loot left during the day. Winding the meet down, the boss & I got an invite to the new Black & Gold Clubhouse in downtown Fredericton, which gave us a chance to have a few refreshments and shoot the shit with old and new brothers. Thankyou Machine, Sideshow and all the others for showing us a great time. This month it’s off to the 13 Crew’s meet and greet and following that, it’s off to Riverview for the flea market & motorcycle show sale. Hopefully on the “couch” .Tell you all about it next month! Until then, ride safe, Atlantic Jeff signing off theridersmags_atlantic@yahoo.ca

‘What is a “Biker”. I sure haven’t been much of a “biker” the past few months but I have noticed a lot of people on social media describing what makes one a “biker” along with numbered codes and various memes. I don’t remember a written set of rules or codes that made or did not make one a “biker” but I do remember the old school descriptive saying, “If I have to explain, you wouldn’t understand”. So what is a biker? A biker is the same thing it’s always been which is what ever it means to you. Everyone has a different perception. When I started riding I was very fortunate to meet some really crazy bikers who became friends. Here’s two quick stories about a few of my crazy biker friends from the “early years”. Back in the mid 80’s a dude walks into a bar. It’s snowing outside, there’s only a few inches of accumulation but the roads are slippery. It is the middle of winter. Dude asks who owns the Jap crap Honda out front? Bartender (that’s me) says “that’s my bike, why?”, Dude says “why don’t ya get a real bike?” The bartender has heard all this before and continues about her duties. Then the biker at the end of the bar, a regular customer, stands up, smiles wryly at dude and says “Where’s your bike? I don’t see you riding”, and a few similar statements . . . dude leaves the bar . . . Bartender buys the biker a beer, cuz we are friends. Thank you Ed.. Sometime during that first year of riding, the same bartender was working at the same bar on a very slow night. Again, her badass stock Honda Shadow 500 was parked out front. A regular walked in and told the bartender that her bike was leaking something and she should check it out. The bartender had heard this and many stories before so she shrugged it off with the usual “sure, sure, heard that one before” and carried on. Another regular walks in with the same story, and then another one! Even though she knows its a trap by the smirks on their faces, she decides to humor them. And she’s getting a bit curious herself. She goes outside, looks under the Honda and sure enough, it is leaking!!! There was a little pile of rice grains deposited neatly under the oil plug! There were three and I can’t remember which three exactly but you know who you are, you are my biker friends. So what is a biker? You decide. Here is a list from my perspective of e ten signs that you might be a biker: 1. If your garage is cleaner than your house . . . you might be a biker. 2. If your first car was a motorcycle . . . you might be a biker. 3. If you ride to work and work to ride . . . you might be a biker. 4. If you know where Sturgis is . . . you might be a biker 5. If your longest relationship was with a motorcycle . . . you might be a biker. 6. If you have tried to figure out how to get your dog to ride on your motorcycle . . . you might be a biker. 7. If you can pack enough on your bike for a month or more on the road . . . you might be a biker. 8. If you have gone on a ride and not returned for a month or more . . . you might be a biker. 9. If some of your furniture is built from motorcycle parts . . . you might be a biker.

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 42

10. And finally . . . If you wave at children who are staring at you from the confines of cars . . . you might be a biker. By the time this issue is distributed I will be back to attending more events, running into old friends, making new friends, and inventing new tequila inspired dance moves. This will be my second summer as a contributing writer for The Rider’s Mag and I am very excited to start the season. The focus for this summer will be the events and rides that support The Rider’s Mag as well as a handful of my favorite charity rides. The calendar is already over flowing! Whether you fall into the “biker” category or not doesn’t really matter as long as you are enjoying the ride. See you down the road. Ride on!’

Cannibal’s King

This month’s feature guy is Cannibal and this is his special construction version of a custom Road King, this bike started out life as a 1990 FLHC and he says that he picked it up on a swap deal when he was working at a local custom bike and off road shop out on the reserve. Cannibal has been in and out of riding over the years and has owned a lot of cars and a few bikes but it seems that now the rolls have been reversed and he has a few cars and a lot of bikes. Back in the day he used to ride some metric bikes saying that he rode one of those really big old Honda CB750’s that we are all familiar with I think they were about one step below a gold wing but don’t quote me on that my knowledge of metrics is limited at best. After that he had one of those insane Yamaha Maxims that had 5 valves per cylinder

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 44

and more horsepower than most humans need to sit upon but then there are those who need the power and speed which is why they have motorcycles with car engines too. Cannibals wife Laurie models on this bike and has one of her own in the shop but it has a limited amount of mileage on it as sadly her son was killed in a motorcycle accident a few years back and as a result she has been somewhat reluctant to get out on her own bike. To her credit she has started to ride on the back of this and some of the other bikes that he has on the go at this time, he says when she decided that she wanted to get out for a ride she wasn’t too happy with his seat for passenger comfort but he was able to change up the seat to something a little cushier for her comfort.

Being a truck driver and an owner of many muscle cars he swung a lot of wrenches saying that he never really did any work on bikes until after he got involved with the local shop where he knew the owner. His wife’s family was related to the other partner and he was interested in the off road side of the business and he ended up with bikes as he had a few monster 4 X 4’s that he had put lift kits in and ginormous wheels nitrous and other goodies and a client came in one day and just needed one of his trucks and traded him off a couple of bikes and a trailer for his hummer H2. This bike was part of that package deal and the bike had been involved in an accident and had been written off and tagged as salvage. He picked up a custom frame for the driveline had help from the shops motorcycle mechanic in fabricating some of the parts for the bike including the rear fender and the custom fillers which has LED lights frenched into them that provide both his signal and brake lights the custom extended Road King bags were fabricated at Hips Cycle in Brantford. lthough the rear wheel cannot be seen due to the stretched bags it actually matches that 26” aluminum front wheel and the rear measures 18” and also has matching rotors and calipers hidden away in the back. The rear sus-

pension is air and includes an electric kick stand which is definitely very cool as he releases the air from the shocks it swings down from the rear of the frame to allow the bike to squat low in the stand and when he reinflates the shocks the stand tucks itself away under the frame. When they were designing the bike and he wanted to do this sort of thing he looked at a variety of systems that are on the market. I have also seen some of this technology first hand in some of the shoots I have done over the years. Cannibal said that after analyzing the choices he felt that because of the road conditions in the area where he lived this system made the most sense as there are many gravel and hard pack roads which can also be hard on paint jobs as we all know. Using an original style front end for a Road King to get that clean look he removed all the lights from the front end with the exception of the headlight opting for some custom mirrors perched upon custom ape hangers with signal and running lights in the stems. The gas tank is very oversize and Cannibal says that he gets an average of about 300 kms out of a tank of gas depending on highway versus city riding and that he recently clocked 400 kms on a tank of gas this past spring. He mentioned having owned at least two perhaps 3 other Harleys since getting back into riding after a rather long hiatus away and related a story of a 2005 bagger that

he had just got out of the shop a few years earlier. He had just nicely put the bike together new engine, tins and paint and took it out for the first scream, caught a dog and totalled it only hours after getting it out. He showed me the helmet and frankly it was impressive that his head was still on his shoulders but he says that after some scans they yanked his license for a short time which of course is difficult for a truck driver. But he survived and moved on and is more avid than ever. We shot this bike in April of 2015 and he had just got it finished back in December of 2013. He mentioned what a snowy month that was I actually remember it well as there was a Friday the 13th that month. I think it snowed for about 4 consecutive days but he is adamant that this bike is his daily rider and he clocked about 15000 kms in 2014 and when we did the shoot he had already racked up 2000 in 2015 after having replaced the transmission in it over the winter and he rode to Friday the 13th in March of 2015 which is the only event I have missed in more than 2 decades of attending it. When you look at this bike you would say wow! I know I did and of course I had to ask what if anything else could he or would he do to this purple beauty, which by the way is his favorite color, and he says that he has a digital instrument cluster on the way so he can have all LED instrumentation and that he’s thinking about adding a stereo system which might include speakers in the bags. Let’s just say I had an enjoyable afternoon meeting up with Cannibal on very short notice due to a last minute change in plans and he came through for us to get this bike shot and get his story as well. It may not be the last you hear of Cannibal there was another crazy bagger in the shop and he was building a softail with dual 26” wheels in the basement, and he has a full time job driving truck, some people right?

It’s official it’s riding season for sure even with the occasional little treat of a few centimetres of snow here and there so almost everybody has started bringing the motorcycles out of storage and getting them road worthy. When I was a kid, my parents told you It was spring when the crocuses, tulips and daffodils started coming up but let’s face it, for Bikers it’s the roar of pipes as you head down the road. As I mentioned in last month’s article I was going to the Toronto Spring Motorcycle Show and involved in the Mag booth as well. The Celtic Brotherhood set up and promote our interactive games etc. that we use to give people some idea of what symptoms of concussion and brain trauma are like. This show is one of my favorites because it always seems more about bikers and less about dealerships. There are more independents with lots of aftermarket parts, gizmos and helmets and leather everywhere and last but not least it is the last of the big indoor shows for the season. Usually by this time of year the folks in Toronto are enjoying

balmy temperatures and there would have been hundreds of motorcycles in the parking lot but Mother Nature chose to make it a little too nasty for riding. We arrived at the International Center early enough that were able to drive the van into the building and unload everything and then get out before other displays blocked

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 46

us in. Not long after Chuck and Hark got there we put the whole display up and were out the door heading to the hotel. It has become a tradition when we are at the International Motorcycle Shows, we meet up with other members of the Mag staff at the Airport Diner to have breakfast and get a little bit of socializing in before we head over to open the show. I dropped off a couple of back issues of our February Mag to the lady who runs the diner with her mother and her daughter. We put a picture of her in it because we appreciate the friendly service and smiles we are all greeted with every time we stop in for breakfast. Once in the building we made our way to the booth and took down the tarps, turned the lights on, including our now famous “torches” which always catch the attention of people passing by, and then some of us took a quick look around. As I mentioned in last month’s Mag, Ray Bonner & James Taylor from Pace Law Motorcycle Division had sponsored the TCB to be at the show to promote our Busted Bucket Challenge which is a series of challenges to give people an idea of what some of the symptoms of brain injury can be like and how it can affect a person’s ability to do simple tasks to their everyday life. Ray and James were set up adjacent to us and in their booth were two choppers, one of which was a clone of Peter Fonda’s Captain America chopper from the movie Easy Rider and the other was a very tasty looking Harley with an incredible metal flake paint job and a springer front end and either one would have looked right at home in my garage. Both bikes were the creations of a friend of Ray’s who loaned them for display to make the public more aware of the commitment by Pace law to protect injured riders and their families. It worked because both bikes especially the Captain America pulled lots of people to their booth over the two days. It didn’t take long after the doors opened before we had a number of people at our booth who had come to meet with the members of TCB and show support for what the club does but also because many of them had sustained traumatic brain injury themselves or someone close to them and they wanted to ask questions about how and why we first became involved in Traumatic Brain Injury and PTSD awareness. To the amazement of many of them, they discovered that many of the TCB are brain injury survivors themselves. I have been doing motorcycle shows for decades but I never get over the pleasure of having people stop by whom I haven’t seen in years and meet new ones, thanks to the internet and developed a friendship and respect for. Two of the first people to stop by were Cowboy aka Andrew Kruschel and Red-man aka Allen Barnes from Parry Sound way both who thanks to the internet have become friends with many of the brothers. I have to mention Red-man’s son was very active while sitting in his stroller and the way that boy tosses that water bottle of his, the Blue Jays have

a future pitcher coming their way. At both the Mag and the TCB booths the Spring Show provides us with the pleasure of meeting many of the people who regularly read and support our publication and also take an interest in the many causes and events we take part in or sponsor throughout the year. Believe me we don’t take it for granted because without you, we would not do what we love to do. A good friend Derek Andrew stopped by to make sure that we will be out to the Belleville area this summer for a number of events. Derek’s lovely lady heads up the Quinte Ride for Paws Poker Run coming up this June 12th and let this be a reminder to all our readers in that area to please make an effort to get out and support this ride because you know what I always say about Bikers & Dogs. Anyhow we enjoyed catching up with Andrew and are hurrying to set a date for the TCB Spring/Summer Motorcycle Classic to be

good days filled with fond memories. As I mentioned earlier the TCB booth was visited by many members of the motorcycle communities who had sustained head injuries not only in accidents although about 45% of all brain injuries are from motor vehicle accidents including cars (not just the ones that hit motorcycles) and often I found myself talking to a TBI survivor and had to revisit my own life’s journey since the big accident. Often both of us would get a little emotional because we try to make people aware of when you have a head injury, it can change your life in big ways including the breakup of families and the inability to return to the job you once held. We continually remind people with head injury that you are not rewarded by the insurance companies for trying your best to return to the person you once were and because of that it is always important that you seek out the legal protection of a law firm much like Pace Law or

held at the Denny’s in Belleville. We would also like to make our way hopefully in June to attend the Bark & Bikes Ride to support of a PTSD Dog program to help people suffering from long term PTSD near Trenton. As many of you may know, I have been using PTSD Dogs since 1969 and nearly 25 years later when I sustained my serious traumatic brain injury, service dogs played an even more important role in my life and my recovery, over the years. So please support rides like these because there sadly is a growing demand for dogs like these not only for our veterans but for members of the general public who have suffered trauma and have acquired post traumatic stress disorder as well. In one of my mini-tours of the show I met up with Cray Scarlett who was working over at the BMW booth and he and I go back to the early 80’s or late 70’s when we used to meet up at this great motorcycle event at the base of some ski hill in the Kitchener area. We got to meet riders from all over Ontario and as I remember the food wasn’t to freaking bad either. I also was reminded of when two good friends of mine used to put on a motorcycle show at Lulu’s Roadhouse which was housed in a former K-Mart store and at 75,000 sq ft was definitely Ontario’s largest club. It was one hell of a motorcycle show with about 6 or more bars amongst the bikes and vendors and there was never any trouble. Those were

any of the other fine law firms that advertise in The Riders Mag. Between the Mag and the TCB booth there wasn’t much time for any of us to get around to look but we all took short breaks and enjoyed the show when we could. Two of the features of the show that I enjoyed a lot, was the vintage section because I always end up saying to myself, Hey! I used to own one of those bikes and that usually happens just before I hear some young guys remark about how ‘ancient’ the motorcycles look. The other venue that had a strong representation at the show was custom motorcycles and there were some beauties on display and while you can’t imagine riding very far on them you are reminded that many of us strive to make our bikes works of art that we can ride and there were lots of choppers from as far away as Quebec and many local to Toronto builders participated as well. It all made for an enjoyable show. Keep in mind that while everyone was there to work, that didn’t stop the fun and laughter that was the rule of the day with lots of kidding going on between both booths. Over the show we were visited by other show participants and vendors and of course the young ladies who worked as models at some of the booths so not all there was to see was only in the booths but also walking around as well. One of the highlights for us was a visit by some members of the St. John’s Ambulance staff who were surprised and pleased when we displayed our heart defibrillator we bring with

us everywhere as part of our “Help Kick Start A Life – The Garth Rooney Project” in honor of my service Doberman, Garth who used to walk around at bike events and cruise nights and wore a special saddle

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 48

to collect donations so we could buy our first defibrillator. They also were interested in our Busted Bucket Challenge because over the season I guess they all see their share of people who sustain a concussion or worse. We took pictures and they mentioned they were going to do a write up in their newsletter about the TCB and The Riders Mag and it goes to show you never know what might happen at a show. As the weekend went by the thing that became the most noticeable was the effect on the boys as they talked to so many people about the program and then for them to receive support and gratitude from everyone for what they were doing was a bonus. The talk during the time we were tearing down the display and packing the van was all about the excitement to do the next event and getting back home to build some of the new ‘chopper’ tricycles we have just designed. This season promises to be one filled with lots of rides and events for the Eastern Ontario motorcycle community to choose from and hopefully I will see many of you at them. On the 24th of April the official ceremony of May is Motorcycle Awareness Month in the province of Ontario, held at Ottawa City Hall and hosted by S.O.A.R. (Society of Ottawa Area Riders) and I might add that if the politicians in the community where you live haven’t got on board with officially proclaiming it yet, maybe some of your riding clubs should bring it to their attention. We need all the help we can get to stay safe on the roads we ride. As most of the Ottawa area riders know, the Capital City Bikers Church will be having their Swap Meet in early May and that event has become the sign that the official riding season has started and of course I hope that many of you will stop by and say hello and pick up your copy of the May issue of the Mag. For those riders who take part in the annual 2804 Dice Run in Casselman which is due east of Ottawa is now dedicating it to my good friend, biker and councillor in the town of Casselman, Denis Renaud, who passed away far too young in early February. Denis worked so hard to make this dice run happen and devoted much of his time to his community it seems only appropriate that he be remembered for doing what he did best. So I expect to see lots of you come out and take part in the ride. Before I close off the column I want to thank not only my colleagues in the Mag & the TCB but I want to extend a much deserved thanks to Ray and James from Pace Law for their support to The Riders

Mag, to the TCB and their efforts to see that riders and their families get some kind of protection should they get hurt because we all know what a snake pit our health services are these days and paying for insurance is far from keeping you safe should you get hurt. As always I remind you to Please support events & rides that are created and run by area riders and their clubs because these are the same folks that come to your rides and events! Also if you have an event or ride or if you are a business

that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them, You might like to advertise or be a distributor for “The Riders Mag and if so please contact me by email or telephone And as always I want you all to remember ... We make our motorcycle communities stronger!... By making them better Email: theridersmag.beau@gmail.com Follow me on Twitter: Riders Mag East : http:// twitter.com/motorcyco_beau

Is Preacher Kenny about to be excommunicated? For what I am about to say, if I were Catholic and went to the cathedral and said it, I would certainly be excommunicated, that is, cut off from God by the local Priest. But I just have to bust this myth. A lot of people have been falsely taught that God has destined a certain number of people to be part of His family (and go to Heaven) and that all others are eternally lost and without hope. What a bunch of crap! This teaching of “predestination” is so out of whack with the message of hope and love in the Bible that it has always boggled my mind that anyone could actually believe it. What the truth is that God has predestined for us is that He cared for us even before we were born so that He planned to give us a perfect way to be a part of His family. It’s called grace through faith in Jesus Christ. He planned for us all to be happy, spiritually rich, and to live a life full of hope, love, and peace (as well as faith). When we think about it, that teaching of a limited number of people were meant to be saved and all others lost makes no sense at all: can you even imagine a God who only loves a portion of His created beings? How nutty would it be if He created a number of us who were little more than spiritual robots, with no choice but to be “the elect”! That would be the most boring thing ever for Him and us! God intentionally gave us free will to choose our own path and it is written that there is great joy in Heaven when someone who was not yet a believer confesses faith in Him (Luke 15:7). That just about proves my point right there about the kind of God that we worship. Just for good measure, here are a few proofs of God’s love from the Bible: 1. “For you are my offspring (Acts 17:28). 2. You were not a mistake, for all your days are written in my book (Psalm 139:15-16). 3. I offer you more than your earthly father ever could (Matthew 7:11). 4. If you seek me with all your heart, you will find me (Deuteronomy 4:29). 5. As a shepherd carries a lamb, I have carried you close to my heart (Isaiah 40:11). 6. For in Jesus, my love for you is revealed. (John 17:26).” 7. And my favourite, “And it is my desire to lavish my love on you. (1 John 3:1).” That sounds like a god who cares for us. Still not convinced? Here’s the smoking gun: “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not die but have eternal life (John 3:16).” I still say it’s never too late to have faith in God! Pray this prayer with me right now: God, I know I’m a sinner but I do believe in you and that you raised Jesus from the dead. Please accept my faith in you even if it is small and make me a part of your family. Amen. Email or call if you prayed. Don’t miss our Bike Blessing at Hamilton Bikers’ Church on Saturday, May 7, at 10:00 A.M. sharp. After that, some of us are having a ride to Port Dalhousie to the BRO Cover The Kids Run. Folks know Dangerous Donnie is actually not dangerous, well maybe the slip and fall and can’t get up type of bastige, but somehow I can still lift the ole geezer glide if it falls over, seems with our motorbikes when you drop em, all of sudden you get that surge of strength... anyhow enough of my rambling thoughts.. One of the benefits of living many years and putting many miles on your clock you finally learn some life lessons, such as don’t sweat the small stuff. All my life I rushed into things without thought or planning, tore things apart that I could not re-assemble. Seems I was one of those that lack the brains but make up for it with a just go for it attitude. But some shit just cannot go unanswered let me rant here peeps... My good friends in the MC Aces and Eights have been a solid crew for many many years respected by all. Some of you locals may be aware for the last 5 seasons they have run a successful event/ride known to all as Christmas in July with the proceeds money/toys/giftcards going to the Durham Children’s Aid Society. My amigo Rusty (road captain) would don his Santa suit (man some rides it got hot as hell and he’s in the red outfit on over his street duds) . Members from almost all MC’s attend, including the boys from Downtown/Oshawa/East and plenty of good friends. While humping my way thru the Facebook posts I read that the club got a message from the CAS

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 52

informing the good guys that the CAS were not interested in being associated with Aces and Eights or the event. A week or so ago I made visit to their CH and in speaking with Marbles (the club member who co-coordinated with the CAS on the ride) he told me the email he got from the Durham CAS was short and to the point. The “Stakeholders” at the CSA made the decision to 86 the club. Ok we all understand how people and places can discriminate and many of us know firsthand that our apparel or membership in a club may prevent/ restrict certain freedoms. No need for me to list them as you all know what I am talking about. But when a gov’t service that willingly accepted funds for 5 years all of sudden put the boots to the event’s organizers, well this just crosses the line by a frkin mile. The Aces and Eights put a ton of work into this ride and out their pockets covered the expenses (advertising/beverages/etc.). Many of us have faithfully supported this event since the beginning knowing it was going to help local Durham kids or at least bring them a little happiness even for a minute or two. But really folks the bottom line is this just blows dead bears. Who the hell are these “stakeholders”? They all should be outed and hopefully get a slap in kisser from the local news. The public in general do not have any issues with an MC doing a charity run. Every club I know of supports a charity and not just to get some outsider kudos they do it because it needs to be done and we all owe a debt of gratitude for their efforts. Ok ranting is over... Stuff Happening Ok so here it is early April and it out here in Picky Pickering we had 6 inches of snow plopped and temps of -10c today. I am wishing I had plunked down a few grand on another southern holiday to miss this spring’s shitty weather but we’re all in this together. In the interm we are lining up the riding season, May 7th is our Rangers MC on the road date, we are really looking forward to it (also Downtown is having theirs the same time) could be we’ll all hook up and burn some gas together during the day. Same evening is Rangers East 1st Anniversary party, held at our CH (we changed the location as posted in the Mag last month... sorry for confusion) everyone is welcome. Astoundingly good food and live blues music. Friday the 13th (May) Well here we go again it’s Dover time, fingers crossed for a nice warm, dry day. Our Editor Critter will be on his usual corner taking photos and gabbing with one of his 500,000 friends and for those that do not know him that well he has a degree from the University of

Boobage. I think it’s clear he must have had more beauties flash him then anyone on the planet! Well maybe a doorman at the Ballet sees more...LOL. But if it’s a nice day in Dover stand near his corner for 30 minutes and see for yourself! Every year for the 13th I jones for a place to stay overnight not fond of heading back out to Durham with the traffic. It can be a bitch of a ride. Who doesn’t like hanging out at Angelo’s and having a cold one and seeing all the friends. It goes by so quickly and next thing you know you’re looking at bailing out and heading home. Oh well it is what it is, anyhow we’ll see you there. Magic Mikey Going to yak about my long time friend whom I have always respected, not only just great guy but so very talented. Mike Dabir is well known in our end of town as painter and bike builder (he builds for himself only, not a competitor of our good advertisers). I have known him since 99 he was hardcore then and is hardcore now, first Cdn guy I ever met with neck tats. He lives and breathes the lifestyle. You will never see Mikey with an out of the box, off the showroom floor bike. He has several custom bikes built from the frame up. These are bike magazine quality projects. Mike runs an auto body shop and is busy like a beaver but somehow his drive to build his creations never waivers and he gets it done. One of my favorite bikes of his is a long low mean chopper painted to perfection. For you guys in the know here are some specs. Wide tire, maximum metal work frame which has been moulded, 113 S&S Street/strip engine, right side Baker tranny, hell bent exhaust, PM six position front caliper, rear has sproctor (where the sprocket and the rotor are one), hand fabricated rear fender, seat pan and the swing arm has 330 Avon rear tire His latest build is a bobber: Kraft tech frame which has been moulded, 110 Rev Tech engine, LA Chopper exhaust, Rev Tech tranny, hand fabricated rear fender, 200 Avon rear tire, 12 inch ape hangers, springer front end. Although for long riding he recently picked up a used Vic cross country (I guess he has been listening to Donny Petersen) it will be interesting to see what he does to this beast. At any rate I rave about his skills, he is a quiet guy who lets his bikes do the talking. I know he must good at what he does as guys like Bryan at Malicious who is also a huge talent himself appreciates Mikes creations. Watch for Mikes bikes at local show and shines. Billy Wilson One of my usual drive bys is the Chosen Few’s CH always greeted and treated well up there and you just never know who else will show up, but my latest visit I found the pres Billy under the weather and I understand he may have ended up in the Hospital the next day. Please send him good mojo and the rest. Bike Show Nope didn’t make it...LOL. Critter’s Crew was so good who would miss me, although I do like to see the other Mag folks perhaps in Dover. Well since today I am just finishing this and it’s cut off for the Mag I have run out of time and verbage. Pls have a good to start to season, put the miles on good tires and better brakes. We need you all here at the when the cold weather comes back. So that’s it for this month.

Ladies and their Harleys

Our first feature lady of the year is Denise and this sharp looking Super Glide was customized by her husband Al with a little help from his friends and the staff at Clare’s HarleyDavidson where Al works. Denise is a customs broker in Fort Erie and she says coming from a border town pretty much everyone is involved with some sort of job relating to the Peace Bridge crossing. She says since she works in a business casual environment she is not able to ride her beautiful bike to work but she gets as much riding in as possible with Al when he gets some time off which he says is a little thin during the riding season but they get a lot done in the limited time they have. Denise had started riding back around 2003 and she

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 54

was so confident that she was gonna get it done that she actually bought her first bike a 1999 Super Glide before she had her license and before she attended the rider training course at the Welland campus of Niagara College. That the weekend she did her practical riding at the school and it rained for the whole weekend but other than learning on a much smaller 350cc bike you all know the sort they use at those schools. Denise says she hopped right onto the Big Twin and started riding straight away taking baby steps at first then getting out onto the highways and of course riding in the rain which was something she was very accustomed to after her weekend at the school. Not surprisingly that bike

was painted similarly to the one you see before you but it did not start out looking like that. The bike was silver for the first riding season and when fall rolled around Al tore it down and again with help from friends he upgraded the bike to the familiar orange paint scheme. Before Al worked at Clare’s he worked in a local gold refinery and on the side he also did his own fabricating welding and painting, sort of a multi talented fellow. They also own a pair of vintage 30’s era Chevrolet cars one of which Al stretched into a limousine and in addition to Denise’s regular job, she and Al also did weddings with their two vintage cars which he maintained himself. Things were going along great for this duo they did as much riding as they could between their jobs, hobbies and car driving when disaster struck. Al was diagnosed with cancer and immediately went in for treatment he says that he was unable to do anything for about a year and most of you know someone near and dear to you who has been afflicted with this insidious disease and can well understand what it means for the victim. Denise had to deal with about 20 wedding bookings that year as Al underwent treatment and tried to not only recover but survive the grueling treatments. They say for two years they didn’t ride as Al had been told by doctors that

he would never ride again and Denise did most of her riding with Al so they set up their bikes in the living room and just stared at them, pretty depressing stuff. Well this story is not about Al but Denise and Al have been married for 30 years now raised children who serve in the military have a grandson and the uplifting part is that Al made a full recovery from his treatments and the disease and since he could no longer pursue his passion as a welder fabricator painter as he was forbidden by the doctors he had the good fortune of finding employment at Clare’s Harley-Davidson of Niagara. They started riding together again making weekend trips, on those infrequent weekends where he had a Saturday off, to points throughout Ontario that were of interest to them or where they had friends to visit. They also made weekend jaunts over the border to Pennsylvania and New York. As their children grew along with their passion Al came upon a newer Super Glide which the owner wanted to sell and had brought the bike a couple times to Clare’s looking to sell and head back west where he had come from. The second time around when the owner showed up Al worked a deal with the boss to get his hands on this 6 month old bike with around 6000 kms on it and told Denise the good news. Much like the last bike it was not orange

but rather black and Denise said quite honestly that she really didn’t care for the bike at all but Al wanted something newer with fuel injection that would be more reliable for the type of riding she was doing. He really did a nice job on this bike adding the clip on “H” style fairing the custom removeable bags and Denise really loves the running boards, upgraded gear shifter and brake pedal that belong to another Harley model. Al adapted them to fit this machine. Denise says this is the bike of her dreams now that it is done and unlike many others she has no desire to move up to a bigger or different bike saying this bike fits me like a glove they only thing she might like would be cruise control for those long rides. Speaking of long rides ironically when I asked if there ever came a time when Al had more free time where would your dream ride be meaning riding somewhere as opposed to a fly and ride. Al was all about going out west through the mountains and visiting some family in Oregon while Denise yearned to ride the Cabot trail in the Maritimes or ride to Milwaukee or Sturgis. But they compromised saying last summer that this summer they planned to ride out through Vermont and New Hampshire hoping that the exchange rate may improve. They take a few weeks each February and go on a beach vacation as it’s the best time to get away and Al rightfully points out that sometimes when you work in the motorcycle world it’s nice to leave that world when you go on a winter vacation. They have a friend who winters in Florida in a nice toy hauler and sometimes they ship their bikes down in his trailer and head down and spend a week riding Florida, nice.

(Senior teenager)I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 60 years later. I don’t have to go to school or work. I get an allowance every month. I have my own pad. I don’t have a curfew. I have a driver’s license and my own car. I have ID that gets me into bars and the whisky store. The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant. And I don’t have acne. Life is great. This morning I was sitting on a bench next to a homeless man, I asked him how he ended up this way. He said: “Up until this last week, I still had it all!!! A cook cooked my meals, my room was cleaned, my clothes were washed, pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV, Internet, I went to the gym, the pool, the library, I could still go to school.” I asked him, “What happened? Drugs? Alcohol,? Divorce?” “Oh No, nothing like that he said. No, no ... I just got out of prison!”

Q. According to Ann Landers, what are two things you should never do in bed? A. Paul Lynde: Point and laugh. Medicare - Part G - Nursing Home Plan Say you are an older senior citizen and can no longer take care of yourself and the government says there is no Nursing Home care available for you. So, what do you do? You opt for Medicare Part G. The plan gives anyone 75 or older a gun (Part G) and one bullet. You are allowed to shoot one worthless politician. This means you will be sent to prison for the rest of your life where you will receive three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating and air conditioning, cable TV, a library, and all the Health Care you need. Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That’s great. Need a hearing aid, new hip, knees, kidney, lungs, sex change, or heart? They are all covered! As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you at least as often as they do now! And, who will be paying for all of this? The same government that just told you they can’t afford for you to go into a nursing home. And you will get rid of a useless politician while you are at it. And now, because you are a prisoner, you don’t have to pay any more income taxes! Is this a great country or what? Now that you have solved your senior financial plan, enjoy the rest of your week! WHY NEWFIES CAN’T BE PARAMEDICS Jim and Bud are out in the woods hunting when suddenly Bud grabs his chest and falls to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be breathing ; his eyes are rolled back in his head. Jim whips out his cell phone and calls 911. He gasps to the operator, “By t’undering Jesus, I t’ink Bud is dead! What should I do?” The operator, in a calm soothing voice says, “Just take it easy and follow my instructions. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence...... and then a gun shot is heard. Jim comes back on the line : “Okay, now what?” A man went to church one day and afterward he stopped to shake the preacher’s hand. He said, “Preacher, I’ll tell you, that was a damned fine sermon. Damned good!” The preacher said, “Thank you sir, but I’d rather you didn’t use profanity.” The man said, “I was so damned impressed with that sermon I put five thousand dollars in the offering plate!” The preacher said, “No shit?” Brenda and Steve took their six-year-old son to the doctor. With some hesitation, they explained that although their little angel appeared to be in good health, they were concerned about his rather small penis. After examining the child, the doctor confidently declared, “Just feed him pancakes. That should solve the problem.” The next morning when the boy arrived at breakfast, there was a large stack of warm pancakes in the middle of the table. “Gee, Mom,” he exclaimed, “for me?” “Just take two,” Brenda replied. “The rest are for your father.”

came home from Bingo to find her 92-year-old husband in bed with another woman. She became violent and ended up pushing him off the balcony of their 20th floor apartment, killing him instantly. Brought before the court on the charge of murder, she was asked if she had anything to say in her own defence. “Your Honour,” she began coolly, “I figured that at 92, if he could screw, he could fly.” A Doctor was addressing a large audience in Tampa ... “The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. However, there is one thing that’s the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?” After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, “Wedding Cake.” Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde-haired woman who knocks everyone’s socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm and who hangs over Bob’s arm and listens intently to his every word. His buddies at the club are all aghast. At their very first chance, they corner him and ask, “Bob, how’d you get the trophy girlfriend?” Bob replied, “Girlfriend? She’s my wife!” They’re knocked over, but continue to ask: “So, how’d you persuade her to marry you?” “I lied about my age,” Bob replied. “What? Did you tell her you were only 50?” Bob smiled and said, “No, I told her I was 90.” Groups of Americans were traveling by tour bus through Switzerland .As they stopped at a cheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goat’s milk was used. She showed the group a lovely hillside where many goats were grazing. “These,” she explained, “are the older goats put out to pasture when they no longer produce.” She then asked,

One night, an 87-year-old woman

“What do you do in America with your old goats?” A spry old gentleman answered, “They send us on bus tours!” A teacher asked her 6th grade class how many of them were Trudeau fans. Not really knowing what a Trudeau fan is, but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all the kids raised their hands except for Little Johnny. The teacher asked Little Johnny why he has decided to be different... Again. Little Johnny said, “Because I’m not a Trudeau fan.” The teacher asked, “Why aren’t you a fan of Trudeau?” Johnny said, “Because I’m a Conservative.” The teacher asked him why he’s a Conservative. Little Johnny answered, “Well, my Mom’s a Conservative and my Dad’s a Conservative, so I’m a Conservative.” Annoyed by this answer, the teacher asked, “If your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot, what would that make you?” With a big smile, Little Johnny replied, “That would make me a Trudeau fan.”

A woman goes into a Fishing Tackle Shop to buy a rod and reel for her grandson’s birthday. She doesn’t know which one to get so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. A shop assistant is standing there wearing dark shades. She says, “Excuse me, can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?” He says, “I’m completely blind; but if you’ll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes.” She doesn’t believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, “That’s a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB. test line. It’s a good all around combination and it’s on sale this week for only $20.00.” She says, “It’s amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I’ll take it!” As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. “Oh, that sounds like a Master Card,” he says. She bends down to pick it up, and accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind fellow could tell it was she who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn’t know that she was the only person around. The man rings up the sale and says, “That’ll be $34.50.” The woman is confused by this and asks, “Didn’t you tell me the rod and reel were on sale for $20.00? How did you get $34.50?” He replies, “The rod and reel is $20.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the

Bear Repellent is $3.50.” My girlfriend thinks that I’m a stalker. Well, she’s not exactly my girlfriend yet. I was at an ATM yesterday. A little old lady asked if I could check her balance, so I pushed her over. Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarfs are not Happy. My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30 a m. Can you believe that? 2:30 am? Luckily for him I was still up playing my bagpipes. My wife was counting all the nickels and dimes out on the kitchen table when she suddenly got very angry and started shouting and crying for no reason. I thought to myself, “She’s going through the change.” Kevin walked into a doctor’s office and the receptionist asked him what he had. Kevin said: ‘Shingles.’ So she wrote down his name, address, medical insurance number and told him to have a seat. Fifteen minutes later a nurse’s aide came out and asked Kevin what he had.... Kevin said, ‘Shingles.’ So she wrote down his height, weight, a complete medical history and told Kevin to wait in the examining room. A half hour later a nurse came in and asked Kevin what he had. Kevin said, ‘Shingles.’ So the nurse gave Kevin a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, and told Kevin to take off all his clothes and wait for the doctor. An hour later the doctor came in and found Kevin sitting patiently in the nude and asked Kevin what he had. Kevin said, ‘Shingles.’ The doctor asked, ‘Where?’ Kevin said, ‘Outside on the truck. Where do you want me to unload ‘em??’ One dark night outside Mundare, a small town in Alberta , a fire started inside the local sausage plant and in a blink it exploded into massive flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments from miles around. When the volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the sausage company president rushed to the fire chief and said, “All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved and I will give $50,000 to the fire department that brings them out intact.” But the roaring flames held the firefighters off. Soon more fire departments from surrounding towns had to be called in as the situation became desperate. As the firemen arrived, the president shouted out that the offer was now $100,000 to the fire department who could bring out the company’s secret files. From a distance, a lone siren was heard as another fire truck came into sight. It was the nearby Smoky Lake rural township volunteer fire department composed mainly of Ukrainians over the age of 65. To everyone’s amazement, the little run-down fire engine, operated by these Ukrainians, passed all the

newer sleek engines parked outside the plant and drove straight into the middle of the inferno. Outside, the other firemen watched as the Ukrainian old timers jumped off and began to fight the fire with a performance and effort never seen before. Within a short time, the Smoky Lake old-timers had extinguished the fire and saved the secret formulas. The grateful sausage company president joyfully announced that for such a superhuman feat he was upping

the reward to $200,000, and walked over to personally thank each of the brave, though elderly, Ukrainian firefighters. The Edmonton TV news reporters rushed in after capturing the event on film asking, “What are you going to do with all that money?” “Vell,” said Nick Sputski, the 70-year-old fire chief, “..... da furst thing vee gonna do is fix da brakes on dat f---ing truck.” Guess I Need Sensitivity Training I was devastated to find out my wife was having an af-
