Well this has been one hell of a riding season thus far, it is notable for the many ways that this whole thing has cramped our lifestyle, the places we haven’t been, the charities that have lost out on the financial support that they have come to rely from the Motorcycle Community, the people that we haven’t been able to connect with, and the number of miles that we haven’t put on our motorcycles! We know the cause and we now know the effects! Events have been cancelled, businesses who should be busy at this time of year, are closed or semi closed, while bars and restaurants remain unavailable for inside dining! Take-out only, or curbside pick-up is what these businesses now have to rely on now to pay the rent, utilities, taxes and all the other expenses that just keep on regardless of the hardship and lost income this Pandemic has caused. Many of these businesses may not be able to survive and to re-open when restrictions have finally been lifted! Damn! You say, this is a Biker magazine and here you are getting all political on us! I am just making observations here because this is the stuff that affects us all, I am a taxpaying citizen of this Country and have every right to speak my mind and since I own this magazine, I have a forum! If this is going to upset you, turn the page! (Or since this will be digital edition, scroll on by!) If this Covid 19 is going to be the torpedo that finally takes down “The Good Ship Riders Mag” then I will go down with it but I will sure as Hell let people know about it so they can man the lifeboats! Aside from all that, my Beloved “Godzilla”, my bride of over 50 years is currently residing in a long-term care facility! They have had no outbreaks of Covid 19 to date! So, I’m relieved about that but I haven’t been able to see her since all this crap came down the pike! So, I have a vested interest in the state of our Healthcare System in general and LTC facilities specifically! Plus, she worked in the Health Care system right up until she retired, so none of these problems are new, just older and nastier, as they have had time to fester and deteriorate the system further. I got to hear about all the cut-backs and poor decisions that were having ill effects a system that needed fixing as it was! I got to hear her rants about how some of the arrogance shown by some of the morons that got promoted, who despite the fact that they were morons, and possible assholes, they still rose higher in the rank’s! There are billions of dollars in Government both Federally and Provincially, grants and loans “promised” to be available to those who can jump through the hoops to qualify! There are programs that offer much-needed financial relief and offer assistance to some, but many of us still seem to sift through the cracks and do not qualify! We at the Mag fit into this last category but are doing our best under these very trying circumstances! I don’t regard this situation as some conspiracy, where any one group The Rider’s Mag - Page 6

is being purposely targeted or just ignored, but I realize that this is a huge, unprecedented, multi-faceted problem and we are just another small part and may have just been overlooked or not gotten to yet! Hopefully, we can soon put it all behind us and get on with our lives! To be clear, I do not trust the Federal Government under Justin Trudeau to actually deliver on many of these promises! I’m sure if you have been on Facebook or other Social media sites, you have heard all of the theories about how, why and where this Corona Virus thing all began, along with the various cures, preventions and causes of it! What I do know is that it is real and has to be dealt with, and for many of us, it has been catastrophic! The full impact that this deadly virus has had on the health and well-being of the populace and the accompanying financial burdens that we all have had to bear, has yet to be fully assessed or addressed! It might take sometime yet to tally everything up and get a clear picture of who, what, where, why how bad things were and are and count both the survivors and those who didn’t! One thing is certain, the World as we knew it, before Covid 19 will be a whole different thing, after the dust has settled and will never be the same! We may never totally put it all behind us! Then there is still the matter of the bill for all this, that is going to follow, and it will be steep! The question of who is going to pick up the tab for all this, is easy and obvious! Prepare to dig deep! It is easy for our Prime Minister to make his daily little Media sessions in front of Rideau Cottage, stand up there, grinning and flipping his hair while handing out promises of billions of dollars, seemingly, without a blink of an eye or a twinge of anxiety, telling us that he and his Government have our backs! If promises from Politicians were nickels, we wouldn’t have a deficit! It isn’t coming out of his pocket! It is coming from ours! To me, from my perspective, he appears to be writing cheques that his ass can’t cash and making promises that he can’t or won’t keep! He has, in effect, commandeered Parliament, rammed through useless, and expensive legislation without any accountability and now he struts around throwing money that he doesn’t have, so that he can play his “Cock of the Walk” role! It would appear that he has already started to back off on his promises to fully support the Provinces with their individual battles with the cause and effect of the Pandemic! He has offered 14 billion dollars which in Ontario’s case alone, is far short of the 23 billion actual price tag! So, it appears that he is already poised to pull the rug out from under the Premiers of all of the Provinces who made promises based on that perceived

support! Trudeau has already prover that his words are often meaningless and his promises carry no weight! The Premiers may have been wise to have considered that track record before making their Promises! Then again, what choice did they have but to take things at face value ? We were in a Crisis! It was bad and getting worse and had to be dealt with! The Provinces rely on, the funding and co-operation from the Federal Government and need and expect them to deliver on their promises! Who saw that one coming? Who knew that the Federal Government might just pull another fast one? You must remember too that the Federal Government has already failed the Provinces right off the hop by letting the reserves of PPE and other essentials needed to deal should a Pandemic hit! Well guess what? A Pandemic did hit and they were left scrambling to get enough equipment and couldn’t get as to why! Talk is cheap! Let’s see some action for a change that actually benefits Canadians! Let’s see some changes on all levels of Government! Let’s see actual changes in our Healthcare system and the Long-Term Care Facilities, that don’t involve tapping into their budgets and telling them that they have to make do with less! That is the type of thing that has been going on for decades and what landed us in this predicament! For a change, let’s see the Government actually fix things rather than making things worse, pretending to not know the cause and can’t or won’t give a direct answer to a direct question! They feel that they are above scrutiny and accountability! It would be nice if they could establish real protocols and procedures that actually achieve something for a change, rather than just robbing from their budgets and making it near impossible for those who are operating on the front lines to do their jobs! Instead they recklessly hand out money or promises of money! (It isn’t actually money until the cheque clears!) This money, is just bandaging, to cover the wounds in an attempt to mask the pain and distract us from the actual problem! It is like handing a crying baby a soother to distract them from the hunger, that is the real reason that he is crying! Merely handing out money isn’t a cure, prevention or a solution! Spending it wisely putting it where it will do the most good and actually listening to the advice of experts, is! Doctors, nurses and PSW’s should be the priority now, and always, as they are ultimately the ones that are going to do the job while the administrators and politicians either take the bows and receive the accolades if things work and dodge questions and make excuses (If you can nail them down.) if they don’t! Those at the front lines are the people who are sacrificing, putting their own lives at risk and spending long hours at the forefront in this battle! Listen to them for a change, instead of ignoring them and their wisdom over the advice of pencil pushers and special interest groups seeking to push for funds for some pet project in some other area or Country! The old saying; “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!” sounds like sound advice! Will the powers that be listen now? Will they finally fix these issues that have been plaguing us for decades and make things right and safe, for not just our seniors but all of our citizens? Will we have a Health System that is worth its salt, actually works and can be a model of what a real Health Care System can be, or be a joke and an example of how not to do things? We shall see! Let’s see our seniors get proper care and be treated with respect, dignity and decency! The problems that have been brought to the public’s attention are not new! It shouldn’t have taken the Armed Forces’ intervention to discover that these problems existed! Yet it took the honest assessment in their reports to bring them to light! These problems have existed and been allowed to fester for decades and were systematically ignored for many reasons! Bandages just covered the wounds and hide them from public scrutiny! Will we just see more bandages or real solutions and a cure! We will see! The main reason for hiding these issues is seemingly greed! Many of the Privately run LTC Facilities appear to have put profits over patient care and administrators scrimped on, in order to save a bit, adding to the dividends of the shareholders with good job evaluations and bonuses coming to them! It is just a business, after all! What about the Health and well-being of the residents you ask? That is secondary! Will it remain that way? We will see! Meanwhile, many of the Facilities, run by the Government seem to have had their own unique problems and issues! They too, seem to put saving money and trimming budgets over the actual health and well being of their patients! They are called Bureaucrats! If a meteor was to strike the Earth destroying all other life, the only survivors would be Keith Richards, cockroaches and bureaucrats! The people at the top of the upper echelons of Bureaucratism, in areas such as the Health care system, in many instances, were just good at playing the game and the system and either ignored certain rules and procedures as it suited them or merely changed them to better fit their agendas! Many of these highly paid people have no real qualifications to actually do the jobs, other than they just have the ability to stab better qualified people in the back, suck up to higher management, avoid or deflect any shit that happens to be flowing downhill so that it lands on others, make reports look good, and hide or mask certain details, and that is their claim to the prize! They have the gift of creating the illusion that everything is under control and make themselves and their bosses shine and appear to deserve their bonuses and benefits! They need to keep up the façade until they can either get other promotions or retire on that generous pension plan! They seem immune to all methods of control! Advancements and promotions for people in Government are not necessarily based on qualifications, merit or knowledge but by the ability to play the game the best or merely having seniority in some cases! Some just keep getting promoted to the level of redundancy and many have already reached that pinnacle! In the case of our current predicament, it seems that many were far more interested in just keeping their lofty positions, complete with expense accounts, gold plated benefit packages and perks than actually doing the job! You The Rider’s Mag - Page 7

need look no further than our illustrious Prime Minister and examine his qualifications to hold the highest office in the Country and control the purse strings of the Nation! Pretty boy, nice hair, drama teacher? Is that all there is? I guess we will find out soon enough! Many of these administrators have held their positions for many years! During that time, you might expect that things such as; staffing issues, along with, insect and other pest infestations, cleanliness, abuse, and all these other issues that were so abundantly clear to our armed forces personnel, would have been equally as clear to them as well and it would have been dealt with! Isn’t that why they are paid the big bucks and get big bonuses? Evidently not! These administrators and Ministers for that matter, aren’t new to the game either! To be fair, Ministers are appointed to certain posts by Premiers and Prime Ministers who are not experts in every field and rely on advice and advisements of experts! They take these experts at face value and use their advice and reports so that they can give good and proper answer to questions from their Constituents! It is up to them to be sure that they are getting the best advice! Their future as an adviser should be reliant on how well they perform! Shit does roll downhill and should never come in contact with those at the top! That is the first rule of management and advisers! Back to our Bureaucrats! So, you would think that someone in those positions would or should, be qualified enough to spot, and not only identify any and all of these abhorrent problems that have been happening in facilities under their charge and supervision! Again, these issues are not new, they have been going on for years which should have been plenty of time to correct them, if someone had cared enough to do something and at least attempted to make it right! It would appear that some star players have dropped the ball so many times that they should have the ball taken away, forever! One would have to question whether those in charge were simply, totally unqualified, incompetent, uncaring or just too damned stupid to have attained their lofty perch in the Health System or any department, in the first place! Perhaps they should not be on the Team for much longer! Doug Ford and his Ministers, have sworn that these problems, in Ontario, will be fixed! However, we have been hearing the same old songs, played by many politicians, many times before them! Different keys, different lyrics, perhaps, but the song remains the same! Sometimes, someone comes along and lends something a little different to that song, and it is the best rendition of that song that anyone has ever heard! Premier Doug and his happy little band have stepped up to the mike! The spotlight is on them! The instruments are tuned! They seem capable and sincere and I am hoping that they are up to the task! Go ahead guys and gals, you have our attention, we are listening! Sing! I’m hoping that Doug Ford is not just one of the many stereotypical politicians, that we’ve already seen too many of, in the past! Those, who fit so well, as the butt of the old jokes like; “How do you know when a politician is lying? His lips are moving!” Don’t let us down Doug! Up until now you’ve done all you said you would! You have made a great impression with many, so far in your handing of this thing! Sure, there have been mistakes made and you and your Ministers have owned up to them all! I, and other Ontarians don’t expect perfection in our elected representatives, but we do expect honest effort and sincerity! So far, so good! Let’s see more of the same, perhaps, some meaningful changes that may prevent future failures, that were so evident in dealing with this Covid 19 Pandemic! Perhaps, if we had been better prepared the impact would not have been as great and the death toll as large as it was! Let’s not keep making the same mistakes over and over and expect different results! That would fit the definition of crazy, or stupid, or both! For us here at The Riders Mag, this will be the third issue of the Mag that has been Online Only since this Covid thing hit! Due mainly to the fact that many of the businesses that carry the Mag are not opened yet or are only partially open and I would have very few places to deliver to and can’t afford to do a small press run! I do have people who help out getting Mags to different areas of the Province and ship to other Provinces and other countries but this Pandemic isn’t just a localized problem and they are in the same boat! We just have to grin and bear it and do the best we can with what we got! I usually do much of the distribution throughout much of Ontario, myself, personally, along with my constant companion, food taster, chick magnet, co-pilot and bodyguard, “Rosebud, The Wonder dog”! I thoroughly enjoy getting out there! When I do get going, we are on the go for several days at a time and require lodging and places to eat. Add to that, the fact, that the Government still doesn’t want old farts like me out wandering around (Non essential travel.) as I’m considered to be a threat, as I may catch this thing and then become more of a burden on our already, over-burdened, overwhelmed and extremely challenged, Health System. Hell, I don’t want to be accused of screwing up our Health care system! Although we still publish a full online version of The Riders Mag, we only charge for ads that actually appear in printed versions of the Mag. We credit all subscribers and annually paid advertisers for the months that don’t have actual printed versions! Until Covid 19 reared its ugly head, and cast its giant shadow and a pall over the whole World, we had a plan and it was working! We started charging for the Mag! It wasn’t much, two dollars, but it made a difference! It helped defray some of the costs of distribution! Then, like some big old wet blanket, along came Corona Virus and all that went out the window! So, that is three Months, with no income, other than my personal pensions and that just isn’t cutting it! I had been hoping to be back in print this month, but Premier, Doug Ford, on the advice of experts, wants proceed with caution and to hold off fully opening things up for a while longer yet! Meanwhile, I have to face the cold, hard, facts along with some grim realities and make some hard decisions here! It is clear that I have to do something, if The Mag is going survive! I am shooting for next Month to be back in print, The Rider’s Mag - Page 8

depending, of course on whether things have reopened by then or not! In order to do that, the Mag has to pay its way! It has to earn and I know that each and everyone of you out there are hurting too, but I have to turn to you and say, if The Riders Mag is important to you, then I need you to support it with your advertising dollars or it will cease to exist! We have always tried to keep our advertising prices as low as possible, as I realize that many of you are small, family owned shops, and do not have huge advertising budgets! You are trying to eek out a living and keep the lights on the same as me, but we all have to eat. I got creative with some of our advertising formats and I think we have come up with some affordable solutions that can be of benefit to our advertisers at a modest cost! We will be contacting many businesses, Clubs and organizations that we have supported over the years with coverage of events and so on to see if we can’t work out some things and we can keep on keeping on! We have always tried to get out to all kinds of events and such all over the Province (Until this Covid Shit!). Myself or our crews (Individually or in groups!) come out to events, large or small, Club events grand openings, ride nights, poker runs, open houses, parties, funerals, celebrations of life, weddings and so on! Hell, I have even gone to Court with many over the Years to offer moral support, as a Brother and as a safeguard against surprises that our courts and Law enforcement are well known for. We focus our attention content and our coverage on the riders of all stripes, sexes, sizes, types of motorcycles and the things that matter to them! We are a Biker Lifestyle Magazine, first and foremost! We are unpolished, unbiased, unpredictable and unapologetically, not politically correct, much of the time! We try to be real and keep it real! I’ve been representing The Riders Mag at these types of gatherings for over 22 years and on my own for a lot longer than that! I have always done it on my own time and my own dime, as with the previous owner, I was just considered to be a “Volunteer Flunky” as he liked to refer to those who worked for him! I always resented the term “Flunky” as I considered it to be demeaning and disrespectful, but did my time because I loved doing what I did! I loved the folks I did it for and had the immense pleasure of spending time with them! I regarded the time spent, as an honour and a privilege! In turn I have been treated with respect and I appreciate it! Since I took over The Mag over 7 years ago, I have discovered why I didn’t get paid by the previous owners. Simply, there is not much money in it, once you take out expenses! I’m still just a damned volunteer! Not a “Flunky”, but a volunteer none the less! Taking the Mag over couldn’t be considered, by any stretch of the imagination, to be the best, most shrewd or savvy business decision I could have made, (My accountant, (who keeps leaving business cards for various bankruptcy consultants and such, lying conspicuously around after a visit.), would certainly agree and he try’s desperately to get me to see the light!!) but I’m old and stubborn and I made the decision and will now live and die with that decision! Over the years, there have always been many requests for us come out to various events such as parties, Ride Nights, Poker Runs, and so on, (Some, or most, of which are not advertised with us!) to provide coverage and support! Some want free bundles of Mags to help fill the goody bags that they hand out to participants of their event! Many, or most, also, request free listings in our very popular “What’s Shaking Page”! Its for Charity is the common denominator in their plea! Its for charity! We can’t do free! We can offer a very good discount for charities, but we can’t and won’t do FREE! Our vehicles do not run for free, nor do we get free gas, insurance or other essential things like food, equipment and the Government always wants a portion! The Mags don’t get printed for free and the heat, hydro, internet and other services that it takes for us to compile, organise and put that information into a format that is somewhat readable and enjoyable still have to be paid! Support has to go beyond just reading The Mag! Reading, is simply utilizing the content! Having the Mag available in your place of business and your Clubhouses is a draw to your business and a courtesy to your customers! I know because I hear it all the time! “People come in here close to the time when the new Mags are due, out to see if they have arrived yet!” Some get it, some don’t! We now offer an Annual Support Ad to Businesses, which is slightly smaller than a business card at a very attractive rate, (The yearly contract runs for 12 issues and to be paid up front, and renewable this time next year.) and will be displayed on a Thanks for Your Support page that will run each Month! This way we can tailor advertising to meet your needs and your business can help support The Mag and we can survive! Someone will be calling from our office or just give us a call. We will also be adding a separate Support section for Motorcycle Clubs of all stripes be they MC’s, RC’s or whatever. We will display their patch or logo designating their chapter or Charter. With these listings we can also give preferred, bulk pricing on copies of The Riders Mag. We will also make a real effort to get out to our supporters’ events or provide coverage with pictures and a write up that the organizers can supply to us! Hey, we are just a small crew and can only be in just so many places at one time! But we try! Sometimes, it may just be a quick stop by, sort of a thing as we move from one event to another but we try our best! I’m trying to bring some more really cool people on board and I’m always looking for volunteers who are serious! I’ll never call you “Flunky” unless you actually are one and you happen to piss me off! Some individual chapters or charters of Clubs have shown their support by taking a bulk subscription and have Mags delivered directly to their Clubhouses or a suitable drop spot for their members and guests! Many of the Clubs also have Riders Mag racks, complete with a donation box in their Clubhouses for events where attendees can pick up a copy of the Mag for a $2.00 donation and I will donate half of that donation back to the Club, organization or charity. The other change is to our “Where the Hell can I find a copy of The Riders Mag” which is a listing of who carries the Riders Mag and where! We are expanding these listings to be more of an advertisement for these establishments! We The Rider’s Mag - Page 9

will custom design each ad to be a representation of that business in a particular region, city or Town, stating address, phone numbers, e mail address, hours of operation and the type of business it is! E.g., “Joe’s Place,” Used HarleyDavidson sales, Motorcycle clothing and accessories, Family run business and so on! I feel that this will make the listings far more useful and practical to the business! The fact that you are also an approved and accredited agent for the Riders Mag is just a bonus! These are but a few ways that may make it possible to survive and that we can breathe if this fucking Covid thing will take its fucking knee off our necks! We are all hoping that this crap will be over soon and we can get on with our lives! As I said, I’ve been self Isolating (slacking off) lately and haven’t been getting out as much to much of anything but our own Dingo Dave is covering the Niagara region and beyond, Dazzling Dawn and the ever beautiful Beau from the Ottawa Valley have been out and about and are all quite active and doing stuff that matters in their areas! Bountiful Barbie has been to several events and will attend this one as well.

The fun and festive, 6th Annual Fester’s Run

This is a ride that has grown for all the right reasons! It started out as just a fun ride with Brothers and sisters from a few different Clubs getting together just to be together for no other reason than to just have fun! Each year it has grown, simply because it was and is fun! Remember when just having fun was a good enough reason to do it? I do! That is why I support this ride! They are also making a Political statement as well!! They want to show that Police Profiling and harassment of Bikers is wrong and that being a biker is not a Criminal offense and being a Biker does not make a Criminal any more than just being a Cop doesn’t make you a dishonest or a criminal Cop! There is a distinct difference and if you are a complete POS in the Biker World you are thrown out on your ass! This year will be a shorter ride than usual and will be approximately a two-and-ahalf-hour ride with a stop in the middle. Organizers will be asking for voluntary donations that will go to a trust fund for recently deceased Bacchus MC Member Mark Charette’s daughter Haley. July 11 2020 Open to the public 292 Brock Road South, Petro Canada parking lot! Kickstands up at 11:30 am. All clubs and citizens are welcome. Social distancing and mutual respect rules apply! Be safe out there and have fun! Be sure to say Hi to our Beautiful Bountiful Barbie! (If you can get a picture of her flashing her boobs, I’ll throw a free subscription to The Riders Mag your way!) Good luck with that!

The Lion and Sun Bar and Lounge

18947 Woodbine Ave, East Gwillimbury L0G 1V0 This is a great spot that I was ready to get a really great Biker Night going up until this Covid 19 stuff shut down the World! This is a great spot with fantastic food, good people and a ton of space where we can have vendors, bands and a whole lot more! They are struggling like every other bar in the world right now and they are doing the best they can! They have great take-out specials and are doing weekend barbecues on the massive patio! Lots of room and if they open things up a little bit and allow for patio to be open this will be a place that you will want to go to and keep coming back!

The frustrated director, trying to get us to understand his position, announced one afternoon, "We need to keep the temperature below seventy-five degrees or the computers will overheat." Thinking that this was just another excuse, one of my shivering colleagues retorted, "Yeah right. So how did they keep the computers from overheating before there was air conditioning?" ************ This week in England, a worker at a factory that makes Coca-Cola cans was caught urinating into the cans. But Coke quickly dealt with the situation by putting a Mountain Dew label on it. ************ At a jewelry store, a young man bought an expensive locket as a present for his girlfriend. "Do you want her name engraved upon it?" asked the jeweler. The young man thought for a moment, and then, ever the pragmatist, steadfastly replied, "No, just engrave it: 'To My One And Only Love.' That way if we break up and she throws it back in my face I can use it again." ************ Heavy snow had buried my van in our driveway. My husband, Scott, dug around the wheels, rocked the van back and forth and finally pushed me free. I was on the road when I heard an odd noise. I got on my cell and called home. "Thank God you answered," I said when Scott picked up. "There's this alarming sound coming under the van. For a minute I thought I was dragging you down the highway."... The Rider’s Mag - Page 13

RIP: Gary, the Number 1 Chump A long time ago in a hardcore world we were mind-fucking with Gary, as we were wont to do. Playfully, we started calling him Chump, trying to get a rise. "I ain't no chump; I am the Number 1 Chump," deadpanned Gary, letting the air out of our collective balloons. Pictured is the Number 1 Chumper with Gail, the woman he loved. He could no longer take her for rides on his big 2-wheeled Harley....ergo, he bought a Trike. He was so happy as he packed his ol' lady riding his weekly runs up north. The trike also assisted mightily as Gary negotiated his way home each day from the bar. The Number 1 Chump was a good guy. GBNF RIP

June This astrology has been written in “Quin-trains” meaning there are five lines to the divination. The fifth line will reveal the answer to the other 4 lines. There are 13 twisted spokes in creation of my wheel I use instead of the common 12. Since this wheel is created this way, this allows the reader to approach the wheel in 3 ways. As each sign represents a spoke in the wheel, you can read either what your own spoke has to say or read what all the spokes have to say to share a visual to the whole picture. See how all the spokes complete your wheel. The 13th spoke is what I call the “Dath Spoke” It is the spoke that binds all other spokes together, so you can see exactly what wheel(s) you’re using for your ride. Consider it having extra rubber for extra mileage. You can also read the 1st line of each of the signs to get another insightful message. Aries: When you've spoken your mind Silence is broken you will find Do not wear the frown you make It will cause an unforeseen wake Together as one, then you can unwind Taurus: The cavern you wander in has pillars Upholding the sky as fillers Your dreams are at its center pool Gaze within for things are still cool When the moon wanes, you become the miller Gemini: Don't get mad, get even as you need It's in your blood, reason needs to feed You've been really patient, good for you But then again, comes a time to renew Claim what's yours by righteous bleed Cancer: King you are, good for you now, today You need that integrity and confidence, okay Each key shall unlock a door of yourself To remove old armor not used for stealth It will be much easier to move than say Leo: There it is, not very far from your sight Just a little further and a little to the right You may find you new life empty to fill Now is the time to use that great will Ascend to stability and safety shall take flight The Rider’s Mag - Page 22

with Dingo Well, this Covid-19 thing has really put a dampener on the riding season!! Just received word that my

last hope for a weekend away has been cancelled…also! Hogs for Hospice, a super organized and fun weekend of riding and great concerts announced that it is not a “go” for this year, and 2021 will be the year to celebrate the 5th year of the event. If you have never been to Leamington for Hogs for Hospice, by all means, plan to go next year. You will not be disappointed. There’s good news though!! Tons of Bike Gear has announced a June 4th opening date!! But wait!! They will be open this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 30 & 31st . Going to see how things work with all the new rules in place, and no, Ed refuses to wear a hazmat suit although Lillian has one for him! Another place that recently opened is Clare’s, both the Harley-Davidson site and Clare’s Speed & Sport in Fenwick. Again, there are rules…no more than 10 people in the store at a time etc. etc . . Sorry to see that Biketoberfest is one of the casualties of the pandemic. If you purchased tickets for the Harley, contact Bruce or Suzanne at 905-714-6885 for a ticket refund. With the switch from winter to summer, almost overnight, decided to finally go for a ride. Headed out for Niagara-on-the-Lake and not surprisingly discovered a ghost town. Recently, the Mayor had stated that they did not want flocks of tourists coming into town….well they got their wish. For the first time ever, I rode down the main street with no cars around…no starting and stopping….no waiting for tourists to cross the road. It was actually strange. Headed down the Parkway for Niagara Falls and it was the same. No cars, no busses, no people. Kind of eerie especially when you notice that none of the public areas are cut and the grass is getting almost as high as the picnic tables. It’s like civilization left the Niagara area. Niagara Falls was equally quiet, although the nice weekends have brought out swarms of people. Tim Hortons in Chippawa, a usual stop along the way, has the parking area blocked off and it’s drive through only. You can, however, walk over to the take out window, wait a few minutes, and they will wave you up to take your order. Better than nothing…but no washrooms open. Wednesday’s “warm” weather found us heading to the “south shore” to ride along Lake Erie. I know, ass backwards, it’s actually geographically the north shore, but I always refer to it as the south. It’s south of me!!! Anyway, discovered that Hippo’s was open, another favorite stop, and a couple of bikes were there. It’s take out only, but, across the street are several picnic tables to park your butt on and enjoy! Giant hamburger and fries filled me right up!! Bike nights. Well, so far they all have been cancelled for May and June, and we all await any further news. Hopefully, July will change things and we can all get together once more. If you are not on any of the Facebook pages like Clare’s for example, check either the Riders Mag FB page or my No Name Riders FB page for updates. I try to list all the local events in the Niagara area. That’s it for now…be sure to ride safe!! It seems that all of a sudden the traffic has increased big time and people forget we are out there. Too many accidents already…..read that this year so far, it has been a 300% increase in bike accidents so please watch the cagers, and expect some dumb moves made by them. Ride Safe, Dave dbarber11@hotmail.com

What a bizarre year this is turning out to be. With everything canceled, my topics to write about are slim. Now mother nature is done PMSing we are all out riding enjoying ourselves and keeping our distance. Hopefully our lives will return back to normal soon and the parties and events will start up again, but for now all I have are pics for you this month.

As the June issue of Riders Mag goes to print, we are still in the presence of the mysterious COVID-19 virus. It is kind of like being caught riding your bike at night in a thick fog, it is hard to see anything, so you just ride beside the white line as a guide and hope you don’t hit something or get hit. You just want to get home and put the cycle in the shop and close the door. It is hard when this virus eludes your 5 senses, taste, touch, smell, hearing, and sight and yet with what is going on in the world in our gut we have come to accept it as real. It is interesting that I have never met anyone who after a conversation, and yes some much longer than others, didn’t believe deep down in their gut around us and in us there is a sense of a God or a higher power or a goodness or something they can really not explain. The toughest old biker will crest a hill at sun set and feel a stranger peace or maybe look into the eyes of a grandchild and see unspoiled innocence. So, in your personal quite time it is almost impossible not to sense the presence of something and so the next step it trust. I remember years ago on an old Triumph Bonneville a guy told me if I wanted to turn left to push the left bar away from me, that made no sense. I tried it, and after about 20 times I came to trust that it works. I still cannot explain 50 years later why it works, but I know it does. Faith is a little like that. You start with tiny faith, something works, and grow to trust in it. He also told me do not look where you are going, look where you want to end up. That is the best riding tip you can get, but it’s the same with faith. Do not focus on COVID-19, focus on where you want to arrive at. Focus on the destination. You know, writing this article each month can be hard. Before I started, I told myself no preaching, just sharing. That is really hard. See 18 years ago I stood beside a casket of an old buddy who I never saw intoxicated and yet for years he saw me that way. He dragged me from burning wreaks and got me out of more jackpots, and yet when I got sober through faith, I never told him how and who got me sober. I made a promise as I stood beside that casket I would never again not share, so that is what I do and leave the rest to you and Him. No matter how strong or grounded we feel we are, these are trying times. Perhaps you may become uncomfortable with things you see yourself doing or saying, maybe try looking up and listening for a still small voice. Remember, I am just sharing, but look up now, not at some future date or when things improve. Turn left by pushing the left bar away from you, even if it does not make sense. Contact us through Facebook and we will send you a free manual (I mean bible). Hope you are all staying safe and well in spirits. God Bless Pastor Glenn

Carburetor Integrated Ignitions Harley-Davidson began to manage the engine with the introduction of the V-Fire III ignition in 1983 readying for the Evolution motorcycle. The heart of the V-Fire III and successive ignitions is the ignition control unit (ECU) also known as the ECM (electronic control module). Since then, H-D has been achieving tremendous strides in managing all aspects of engine running. The modern ignition system must balance the goals of producing power, efficiency, fuel economy, and less noxious emissions. Unfortunately, fewer emissions will sometimes conflict with maximum power considerations. This ECM fuel supervision and ignition system forms the basis of the last year of the full production of Shovelhead engine-management-system, a full twelve years before first use of EFI on Big Twin touring bikes in 1995. The present day electronic control module co-ordinates engine management in a far more sophisticated fashion but it all builds on V-Fire III goals. However, integrating the ignition with carburetion did not begin full swing until late-1998 with the introduction of four main sensors feeding the ECM. The information provided allows the ECM to fire the spark plugs at the absolute optimal time. The ECM contains a spark map matrix on timing when the spark plug should ignite on the carbureted models. The timing of spark plug ignition is no longer an educated guess. The sensors vary whether for carburetion or fuel injection. The first carburetor sensors with their short form acronyms were: the crank or flywheel speed and position sensor (CKP) H-D 32497-99; the camshaft speed and position sensor (CMP) H-D 32496-99; the manifold air pressure sensor (MAP) H-D 32316-99 and the bank angle sensor (BAS) H-D 32495-98. Five other components are required for the carbureted Twin Cam ignition system, which are the battery, single fire ignition coil, ECM, RFI (radio frequency interference) protected spark plug wires and RFI spark plugs. All electronic ignitions require RFI plugs and wires. Otherwise, radio frequency transmissions may interfere with and confuse the electrical pulses in an electronic ignition, sometimes shutting down the ignition and thus the motorcycle. Of course, the single fire ignition requires a different coil or, put more precisely, two coils in one and better quality spark plug wires (31992-99). Each separate coil services its own cylinder sparking, once each cycle of four strokes (intake, compression, power, exhaust). When one cylinder-piston is on its upwards compression stroke, the other cylinder-piston is on its upwards exhaust stroke. This is why a single fire coil must really be two coils in one, to ensure that the spark occurs near the end of opposing cylinder compression strokes. Twin Cam EFI also utilizes a single fire ignition system. Evolution and predecessor engines have dual fire coils, where one coil fires the spark twice each cycle, once near the end of the compression stroke to be fully ready for the power stroke and once as a wasted spark on the exhaust stroke. Single fire ignitions are a huge improvement over the dual fire ignitions. After the sensor information computes inside the ECM microprocessor, the results fit into a specific cell in its spark map matrix to signal the ignition coil (31639-99) to spark the 12mm 6R12 spark plugs (32317-86A). This ignites and burns the incoming fuel charge to produce the best efficiency in terms of power. Emissions controls sometimes compromise this. The Camshaft Position Sensor (32496-99) also known by its acronym CMP locates in front of the timing cover and incorporates a Hall effect sensor. The Hall effect ignition pickup unit is located inside the timing cover on the primary 34-tooth rear-cam-drive-gear that attaches to the Twin Cam outboard rear-cam-journal that extends through the camsupport-plate. There is a semi-circular ridge called a rotor on the outer side of this gear. This ridge rotates with the camshaft. The portion of the circle without a rotor (ridge) break is known as a window. The ridge window location, beginning, and end gives engine timing information as all interacting engine parts time to each other. As the ridge on the cam gear turns with the rotating rear cam, it breaks the magnetic field of the Hall effect Sensor. An electrical pulse is generated by the power source of +5 volts back to the ECM. The pulse instructs the ECM regarding engine phase, which is the technical explanation. In plain English, if the ECM knows the cam position, it will also know valve(s) position(s) relative to their seat(s) and piston locations, which will also indicate crankshaft degrees rotation of the flywheels. Every moving engine component times to each other. The CMP is no longer used after circa-2001 in part because of early Twin Cam timing chest parts breakdown problems. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) takes on the added responsibilities after the CMP discontinuance it was pretty much duplicating anyway. The CKP (32497-99) locates in the front of the left crankcase-half above the alternator plug. The CKP measures piston locations and valve opening and closing positions, which will also indicate crankshaft degrees rotation of the flywheels and also sends information to the ECM regarding internal engine speed. This information is from electronically reading the 30-indent cut teeth in the left side flywheel as it rotates with the crank. There are two missing teeth cuts in the flywheel rim that time with piston TDC (top dead center). The CKP power source is self-generated by AC (alternating current) output. It is basically a magnet/AC generator that The Rider’s Mag - Page 28

reads slots cut into the outside rim of the left-hand flywheel face. The faster the slots pass by the magnet-sensor the faster the flywheels are rotating and thus the faster the pistons are traveling. Furthermore, slot location determines where the flywheel rotation is relative to piston location. After all, this is about when to fire the spark plugs for maximizing combustion. An EFI system also links a fuel delivery pulse width table with the spark map for even more precise engine management. Pulse width is the length of time in milliseconds that the injectors activate to squirt fuel. The Manifold Air Pressure sensor (32316-99) is also known by the acronym MAP. It locates on top and extends into the manifold to read the constantly changing manifold absolute pressure changes of the moving air inside. This information transfers via electrical signal to the ECM, which consults the spark map cell matrix to determine appropriate advance-retard spark timing. Simply, manifold vacuum or no-vacuum indicates whether the bike is under load (cold idle, acceleration) or not (hot idle, cruising) This will determine when spark should occur during the latter stages of the engine compression stroke. The Bank Angle Sensor (BAS) really has nothing to do with carburetion or ignition except once triggered will cut power to the engine. Circa-1998, the Bank Angle Sensor (32495-98) switch relieves duty for the VAS (Vehicle Attitude Sensor). If the motorcycle tips, the BAS reduces the angle for engine shutoff from VAS 80-degrees to 55-degrees horizontal to the ground. This safety sensor is a magnetic ball that rides in a silicone fluid in a V shaped channel. If the bike tilts to within 35-degrees horizontal (350 + 550 = 900) to the ground or less, the magnetic ball will ride up the channel creating an open circuit within the sensor. The power source is +5 volts from the ECM. This open circuit, in turn is detected by the ECM, which immediately turns off the ignition system. Once this sensor is tipped beyond 550, the bike must be brought back to an upright position with the ignition key turned off. It is necessary to wait at least 10-seconds before turning the ignition on and restarting the bike. The Evolution VAS sensor located in the engine’s right side timing chest cover and mounted as part of the CMP sensor at the end of the camshaft on the sensor plate. The Twin Cam BAS locates in various places such as behind the left side cover on FLT models. As the years progressed to the demise of carburetion in 2006 on all Harleys, the ignition integrated fuel delivery became more sophisticated approaching a total engine management system in conjunction with Delphi electronic fuel injection.

So here we are in the month of June and the weather has finally come around in our favour, but many of us find ourselves caught up in predicaments relating to the Covid-19 Virus disaster. First it was local motorcycle shops having to close for several months with some maybe having the owner working in the back trying to get customer’s motorcycles ready for Spring that were in the shop. Add to that, the closed Canada/U.S. border along with some parts suppliers, not willing to ship to Canada. So shops are struggling to get customers bikes out the door. Like everywhere else, except for a few small groups of club members or friends going on an afternoon ride, our ability to get out and socialize with each other has been hampered to say the least. Also, the list of events that have decided to cancel out for year of 2020 just keeps on growing! But there are still a few diehards who are keeping the possibility open to have their event take place. Some of those events at this time are; BACA MC Ottawa Chapter is hopefully holding their Annual Ride on July 18 and if they need to reschedule it will be held on August 29th . As in previous years The Celtic Brotherhood will provide breakfast for all the participants. The 6th Annual A.R.M. Chapter 94 (Association of Recovering Motorcyclists) on July 25th begins in Smiths Falls. The 30th Annual Cowpaddy Boys Rodeo & Roast is still slated to take place on the weekend of August 13 – 16, southwest of Ottawa and will be a good time come rain or shine. On August 22nd the Fubar Crew of the Falcons MC will be hosting their Battlefield Run & BBQ with a complimentary free breakfast once again donated by members of The Celtic Brotherhood. The Falcons MC are a great bunch of riders who support other local club’s events as much as possible.

Both the Annual Ride for Autism and the Annual Awareness Ride for Brain Injury hosted by TCB are still on The Rider’s Mag - Page 30

but new dates have not yet been decided. The popular Wildman’s Rodeo has been cancelled for this year, but I am sure it will be even bigger and better in 2021. I have had a number of friends of other clubs call to catch up and because I am pretty well in Ontario for the season, covering rides and events it completely escaped my attention that a lot of riders had to cancel vacation rides to either the east coast or west coast, as there are still some bans on interprovincial traffic! Like everything else, we all hope the restrictions are lifted soon. There aren’t too many people in the Ottawa and

area motorcycle community who don’t know who I mean when I mention Thor aka Tom Allain! He and his wife, the lovely Nathalie Lacasse decided to retire and move out to Vancouver Island. Thor has been active on Facebook in keeping us all up to date with stuff that is happening with them. This includes, his acquiring a early 70’s VW van which he is “tattooing” to look like the ultimate hippy van! Between that and his custom chopper he will know the island better than most, in no time. Years ago he and Bones aka Roger Nairne were major forces in the Ride for Noah! Over time, after Noah passed away, it has become BACA Ottawa’s Ride, of which, Thor was one of the founding members so even when they are clear across the country, all the good will that he and Nathalie created here is still going on! Many of us in the Ottawa and area motorcycle community are very familiar with the Greely Legion. Many of the motorcycle community hold Celebrations of Life, Stag & Does, wedding receptions and the occasional Swap Meet or two there. Legions, like any other public social venue have been devastated by the Covid-19 Quarantine and so they are struggling. Last week, some of The Celtic Brotherhood and the Lovely Bette went over to mow the grounds to help out! I

The Rider’s Mag - Page 31

would like to ask the motorcycle community if you belong to a legion and they haven’t acted badly towards your club, please see what you can do to help them out until things return to normal or at least the “new” normal. Throughout the month of June, I will be participating in a number of small gatherings and rides and I look forward to having more news to pass on to you! Please contact me with any events you might know of and I will do my best to get the word out. For many years I have ended my column with the same things, reminding you of all the riders and their families struggling with brain injury. I tell you to support the rides and events of clubs in your area because they are the ones that come to support yours! I also mention that you should support the businesses and services that advertise in The Riders Mag, because without them we couldn’t reach out to all of you and keep you informed of what incredible people you are but this is a different ending for now. The battle with the Wuhan or Corvid-19 Virus continues to take its toll both in lives as well as jobs and our economy. While some governments want to sing us a song as the boat struggles to stay afloat, others are winning the war one battle at a time. All of us from “The Riders Mag” want to offer all the members of the medical profession such as nurses and doctors to truck drivers and grocery store clerks and a 100 other occupations, our respect and admiration for what they are doing. To our Brothers & Sisters in motorcycle communities everywhere. When we finally get to the light at the end of the tunnel, life will be different than when we entered it. I mean everything I say about all of you every time I write about how awesome you all are and if you arrive at the end of this quarantine in fair shape, please take the time to check and see what you can do for the others in your biker community who perhaps, didn’t fare so well. Sorry for the speech but we have to be there for each other. If you have an event or ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertize or even perhaps become a distributor of The Riders Mag, please contact me by email or phone. As always I want you please remember that we make our Motorcycle Communities stronger by making them better. email: theridersmag.beau@ gmail.com Twitter..
