WTF??? Isn’t this just a fine kettle of fish? Corona Virus! Covid 19! Hemorrhoid 2020 (as it is one huge pain in the ass)! Whatever you want to call it, it has certainly had an adverse effect on things and the World as we knew it to say the least! It has caused much stress, strain, pain, heartbreak and chaos on a Worldwide scale and it is some real serious stuff! People all over the World are dying from it and each day the death toll and the number of confirmed cases increases in staggering numbers that are overwhelming the health care providers ability to deal with them all! I don’t think that there is any aspect of our lives that the disease hasn’t had a huge impact on! Unfortunately, we are not done yet! Here, we are effectively locked down and are being ordered to stay home and only venture out when it is absolutely necessary! Stores and businesses that are allowed to be open are limiting their hours as well as slowing and adjusting the flow of customers while they are in the stores and are very conscious of social distancing and most have installed plexiglass shields at cash registers to protect their front-line workers! Nursing homes, across the nation are recording deaths and confirmed cases of Covid 19 with residents and healthcare workers alike! Hospitals and the like are off limits to visitors! On a personal note, I haven’t been able to see my beloved bride of 50 some-odd years, Godzilla for three weeks or so now as she is in a long-term healthcare facility in Aurora! I have spoken to her on the phone and the excellent staff there keep me updated on her condition and what is going on in the home! The Newspapers have devoted large sections of their papers to Covid 19 coverage and the news on television and radio are repetitive almost to the point of being annoying! It is all very overwhelming! It was refreshing to see (Or so it seemed!) all of our politicians putting party differences aside and forming a solid, cohesive front from which to launch an all-out assault on this Virus that is affecting us all so adversely! That is, until our illustrious (Mr. Dress up) Prime Minister showed where his priorities really lie and his true colours shone through, as he shamelessly, made a failed attempt to sneak legislation through that would have circumvented not only the results this past election, but our entire Parliamentary system and would have effectively shredded our constitution! Luckily our opposition parties and keen-eyed press were on the ball and called him on it and stopped him! He turned what could have been an opportunity to rise above all the negative press that has plagued and tarnished his Liberal Government and appear to be a true leader, spearheading the fight against this thing that threatens the health and well being of the nation! Instead he has proven himself to be opportunistic and self-serving and shown what is priorities are and that he is not a leader in any sense of the word! There was a glimmer of hope, that he would rise to the occasion, but The Rider’s Mag - Page 6
he fumbled the ball, and his and his Government’s track record and reputation spirals further down the tubes! He now steps briefly from the sanctuary/self-isolation of Rideau Cottage each day and presents himself for press conferences to give updates on the progress in the fight against this deadly Virus! He should be inspiring confidence in the Nation as true leaders like Winston Churchill had done in times of crisis! In light of his blunder, his words, his presence and his presentation do not inspire confidence or give hope to a Nation who desperately need it right now! He does not come across as a leader but rather, a smug, dishonest, deceitful and insincere dolt who answers questions with the same tired rhetoric, while those worthier and more capable of doing the hard work, and stay the course! How are we to listen to his insistence that we take this Pandemic seriously when he saw it not as a serious threat to our nation and a time for action but an opportunity to pull a fast one on the people that he is sworn to serve! Justin, you blew it again! It is not the time for partisan pushes to further seize power while the Citizens are distracted by real circumstances that effect the Nation’s economy, health and well-being! That being said, I don’t think anyone is expecting a magic bullet or one specific piece of legislation that will be a solution or an instant cure for all! This situation that we find ourselves in, has no precedence! There are no textbook solutions and everybody is thinking on their feet, searching for answers, getting the right advice and doing what they can to pass and to tweak legislation and make sound decisions based on what is in the best interests of the Citizens of this Country! Sure, it is all largely trial and error as this is a multifaceted problem and there is no one-size fits all solutions! It will take time but I’m sure that when the dust has finally settled and we put away the last of the face masks and hand sanitizer and tear down all the closed signs we will all come out the other side, a little worn and weathered perhaps, but a perhaps also a bit wiser and better equipped to deal with other challenges that await us down the road! They say what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger! I guess we will see when we all get a little further up the road! Until then stay safe, be healthy and be kind! As for us at The Riders Mag who, like our readers, were anxiously waiting for the temperatures to warm up, to see the snow and ice melt away and the salt and crap cleared from the roads and get our 2020 riding season under way! That is until we were, instead, cursed with this damned Covid 19 Virus that has seen Swap Meets and Major Motorcycle Shows cancelled, bars, restaurants, hotels, stores and any shop or store that hasn’t been blessed with the essential service title are closed! We
and especially us old farts over 70 years old, have been not just advised anymore but ordered to Stay at Home in an effort to stop the spread of the virus and shorten the time that it will take us to get back to normal, whatever the new normal turns out to be! This Virus has caused Worldwide concern and has impacted the health and economy of every Nation, not just here in Canada! It is a Pandemic and it affects us all and we must all do our part if we want to come out on the other side and get on with our lives! Meanwhile, there are all kinds of theories and speculation on how, where and when this Virus got started, who is to blame, who is and who isn’t taking it all serious enough, along with many opinions and conjectures on how best to contain, control and eliminate it and it is all available for you right there on Facebook and other social media sites! If you have been on Facebook you will have no doubt, read or seen videos and heard all or many conspiracy theories! You, as I, have probably been inundated with all the sure-fire ways to detect and eliminate Covid 19 and I wonder why the experts and heads of the Worlds Medical agencies don’t just tune into Facebook and solve these issues probably by later today! Blowing the hair dryer up your nose was one of my personal favourites and I’m quite sure there will be many more before this thing runs its course or they find a real cure and real solutions! The troubles that I have, keeping this Mag afloat are miniscule and insignificant by comparison! The long and the short of it is, we will survive or we won’t! I don’t think that the Government is going to come along with any aid package for us as we are just an insignificant “Biker Magazine” to them and don’t carry much weight with the politicians on a Federal, Provincial or municipal level! Efforts that I was making to our publication and distribution system that seemed to be having the desired effect and we had the support of some key advertisers. The future looked bright have now this Virus and subsequent necessary actions that Governments had to take to deal with it has cast a giant shadow over things and many of these plans and hopes been dashed and I have no idea if I will recover from this! Time will tell, but I will do all that I can with whatever I got and try to make the most of it! I hope you guys will understand that these are extraordinary times, my resources are stretched to the limits and my pockets just aren’t that deep! I only have just so much gas in the tank! When I exhaust the last of my options I will have to decide what I will do! I love doing what I do with the Mag and I know that many of you love the Mag as it was and is as a printed Mag! However, there comes a point when enough is enough! Until then I will do my best with the help from my fine and loyal crew to continue to publish and we will get back to printed editions just as soon as I can! Until then, I will continue to publish online and credit subscribers for any hard copies they may have missed! I may have some other options and we are working on them! Well as you may have surmised from all of that there wasn’t a whole lot Shakn’ and Bakn’ in the Biker World as pretty much everything was cancelled! The London Swap Meet, the OCC conference up in Owen Sound, Our Anniversary Party, the Peterborough Swap meet, The Spring Motorcycle Show and pretty much everything and anything from funerals, celebrations of life, parties of all sizes and any other kind of socializing was scrubbed! So, with no events to attend, I pretty much stayed at home, other than short trips out to forage for food and other essential goods at a few local stores I spent my time cleaning up the shop and studio and even got creative with my cartoons and my drawing programs on the computer! At first, I shared the opinion of many, that the Government was over-reacting and the Media were turning it all into a big Circus so they could sell more newspapers! Then we started getting reports from Countries like Italy and Spain where people were actually dying in great numbers and that we here were just on the cusp of what was to come our way really quick! Then it became clear that this Virus was as serious as a heart attack! I changed my attitude really quick and now they are telling us over 70 folks that we should stay home and selfisolate even if we have none of the symptoms of Covid 19! Last Month, I was glad that I along with my constant travelling companion, co pilot and Bodyguard, Rosebud the Wonderdog got to extend our delivery routes even further! We love it and get to visit with all the fine folks along the way! After getting the Mags out to Dingo Dave so he can do the Niagara area and to Bad Bob who is helping me out with Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Mount Hope and Brantford and other points out that way. We turn our attention to my Westerly Run which takes us two full days and now consists of Loretto, Tottenham, Orangeville, Moorefield, Elora, Waterloo, Kitchener, Ayr, Woodstock, Ingersol, London, Chatham, Wheatly, Kingsville, Leamington, Harrow, Windsor where we hang out with Cheyenne, give him his Mags to cover the Windsor area, stay overnight and continue on through to Strathroy, Lucan and back through London to Cambridge, Milton, Mississauga into York Region and then home! Our next trip is out through Stayner, Collingwood, Owen Sound, Shallow Lake (Fox Harley-Davidson and GT Cycle are once again carrying The Mag!) Port Elgin, Allenford, Ripley and we work our way back through Bolton and back to Newmarket! We head out bright and early and work our way up to Barrie at Hawg Worx Cycle and down to visit with Delightful Dolores at The Outer Edge T shirt shop at the 400 Market, before heading to the other side of Lake Simcoe to Udora, Beaverton, Pefferlaw, Keswick and back home! As I said I enjoy doing these runs and delivering the Mags and try to make it a personal thing and if this Damned Covid 19 thing ever goes away I will get back at it and extend it further and may just stay out delivering and such for an entire week or more! The plan is actually, when the nicer weather gets here and the dark and ominous Corona Virus clouds that cover the sun disappear, to take the trike on the delivery runs and factor in Various Ride Nights and events throughout the province and maybe even visit some of the Clubhouses that I keep getting invited to but never seem to have time to actually get there! It is time to make time while I still have time to spend as it can all go downhill very quickly and end The Rider’s Mag - Page 7
just that fast! It is time to live the life I love, doing what I love to do! I can chronicle my experiences each Month in the Mag, and or, could do a Blog on our website and Facebook page and may even figure out the whole Instagram and Twitter things! Rosebud had her first experience on the trike last Summer and she seemed to like it just fine! I have a nice sling thing that she is quite comfortable in and my buddy Dave tells me that he has just about finished a box for her that can sit on the back seat of both the Trike and Petoonia, who is almost back on the road! She seems content to just be with me wherever I go and however I decide to get us there! One of the changes we are going to implement in The Riders Mag is the “Where the Hell can I Find a Riders Mag” section in the back of the Mag which as the title suggests it is a list of all the spots that carry The Riders Mag! Right now, it is just a listing telling you where they are as to what region, Province or whatever! We are going to make it more of a small ad wherein we can list not just where the store or shop is located are but a brief description of what they are about, hours of operation and such! I think it will work extremely well and give effective and reasonably priced advertising and help us keep this Mag out there and serving the Motorcycle Community! For example; Strictly V Twin – 29945 ON-48, Pefferlaw, ON L0E1N0, 705 437 2291–Family owned and operated, Used HarleyDavidson Sales and Service, extensive aftermarket parts and accessories, large selection of great looking biker fashion! Open 7 days a week
Big Al’s Swap Meet - 2020 version!
I haven’t been intentionally slacking here but the damned Corona Virus thing has cramped my style, a lot! I had a full calendar of events to cover and places to go and people to see! Rosebud and I had everything planned and mapped out right down to what outfit she would be wearing each day and where we would purchase her favourite “Road trip food” (Chicken fingers!) Then the brown stinky stuff, that is the Corona Virus, hit smack dab into the whirling blades of the rotating cooling device and spread a thick coat of the crap all of those plans! This was the last and only event that I covered this past Month! I have no other pictures and just this article to write and other than my usual whining and ranting this is it! Rosebud and I picked up Kris and headed on out bright and early to the wilds of Dundas in the truck that we had carefully loaded the previous day on what was shaping up to be a pretty decent looking day. It was still pretty chilly but I knew that there would be a good number of people who would be riding out! We arrived at the Armory which is the long-standing venue for this always much anticipated and very successful event! We pulled up in front and got instructions as to where they wanted us to unload and by the time I pulled around there was a crew of Bacchus MC members and probates there to help us unload and get us to our table! I’ve said it before and it bears saying it again! These guys know how to run a successful Swap meet and for that matter any event they run is 1st class and efficient from start to finish! We got stuff set up or rather Kris did as he has a system and I dare not mess with it! Bud and I look after taking pictures, wandering around and talking to people! I get to drive us there and back while he with Bud curled up on his lap sleep through most of the trip so it evens out! The beautiful and Bountiful Barbie joined us, fresh from a Bacchus party that she attended in Woodstock the night before. She was none the worse for wear and was in good spirits as she regaled us with stories of monster steaks cooked to perfection that were enjoyed by huge crowds of people from all over! She seems to be getting a lot of plum assignments lately and is enjoying herself a little too much! Hell! She does a great job and allows The Riders Mag to be in more places and cover more events! This event is always well attended and I’ll bet that if people only knew what was about to transpire with the Pandemic and that this could be the last event for quite some time, even more would have come out! Regardless, the doors opened and soon the large room filled with people and the noise that is music to the ears of Swap meet aficionados! There was steady flow of anxious bargain seekers, savvy builders and avid collectors looking for rare and elusive parts to complete their winter project or those looking for chrome accessories, leather goods or collectables filed through and would square off to barter with savvy vendors for the best price possible! It is fun to listen to the haggling and witness the song and dance that goes with these transactions and the routine gets repeated countless times throughout the course of the day! In the end, there are a lot of happy people smiling as The Rider’s Mag - Page 8
they lug their new-found treasures to their waiting vehicles while an equally happy vendor smiles as he knows that he has one less thing to load up at the end of the day! The day flew by and I had a lot of people to talk to throughout the day in close quarters! I hugged and shook hands with great abandon and socialized with no thought of social distancing, of which, I was blissfully unaware that it was even a thing, while I enjoyed a couple of the amazing Hot Dogs that the Bacchus MC Boys serve up from the canteen! Will those fantastic days and happy times that we knew so well and enjoyed so thoroughly return or are they to fall victim to the times and the realities of what can happen in a World that gets smaller with each passing moment!! Anyhow it was a great day and a great time was had by all! See you next year! Be safe!

The man responds, "Ever since I was a puppy." ************ A girl walked up to the information desk in a hospital and asked to see an "upturn." "I think you mean the intern, don't you?" asked the nurse on duty. "Yes," said the girl. "I want to have a contamination." "You mean examination," the nurse corrected her. "Well, I want to go to the fraternity ward, anyway." I'm sure you mean the maternity ward." To which the girl replied, "Upturn, intern, contamination, examination, fraternity, maternity what's the difference? All I know is I haven't demonstrated in two months and I think I'm stagnant." ************ A blonde is over at this Coke Machine putting fifty cents in, taking the coke, putting it in her pockets, throwing the quarters in, taking the coke, putting it in her pockets, throwing the quarters in, taking the Coke, putting it in her pockets. A: For Driving Under the Influenza. Q: What are two things you can never eat for breakfast? A: Lunch and dinner. Q: What did one skunk say to the other skunk when they were cornered? This has made Starbucks customers very angry. I mean, this is all so frustrating. If only there was some way for people to make their own coffee, at home. ************ In the office where I work, there is a constant battle between our technical-support director and customer-service personnel over the room temperature, which is usually too low. The frustrated director, trying to get us to understand his position, announced one afternoon, "We need to keep the temperature below seventy-five degrees or the computers will overheat." Thinking that this was just another excuse, one of my shivering colleagues retorted, "Yeah right. So how did they keep the computers from overheating before there was air conditioning?" ************ Researchers at the University of Vermont determined that the world's happiest language is Spanish. German finished fourth, which I find hard to believe. Some hospital workers in Kenya have been suspended after doctors performed brain surgery on the wrong patient. I guess those brain surgeons weren't exactly rocket scientists. ************ This week in England, a worker at a factory that makes Coca-Cola cans was caught urinating into the cans. But Coke quickly dealt with the situation by putting a Mountain Dew label on it. ************ At a jewelry store, a young man bought an expensive locket as a present for his girlfriend. "Do you want her name engraved upon it?" asked the jeweler. The young man thought for a moment, and then, ever the pragmatist, steadfastly replied, "No, just engrave it: 'To My One And Only Love.' That way if we break up and she throws it back in my face I can use it again." ************ Climate change could eventually wipe out crops like strawberries and grapes. Even worse, that means edible arrangements will soon be 100 percent cantaloupe. ************ In honor of International Women's Day, McDonald's is flipping its golden arches to resemble a W instead of an M. And we can't even show you what they did over at Hooters. ************ Heavy snow had buried my van in our driveway. My husband, Scott, dug around the wheels, rocked the van back and forth and finally pushed me free. I was on the road when I heard an odd noise. I got on my cell and called home. "Thank God you answered," I said when Scott picked up. "There's this alarming sound coming under the van. For a minute I thought I was dragging you down the highway." "And you didn't stop" he asked? *********************************************** In court, the Eversweet Company's hot-shot solicitor was questioning Paddy. 'Didn't you say to the police at the scene of the accident; 'I'm fine?' asked the solicitor. Paddy responded: 'Well, I'll tell you what happened. I'd just loaded my fav'rit cow, Bessie, into da.... Paddy said, 'Well, I'd just got Bessie into da trailer and I was drivin' down da road.... ' The solicitor interrupted again and said, 'Your Honour, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident; this man told the police on the scene that he was fine. Now several weeks after the accident, he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question.' By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Paddy's answer and said to the solicitor: 'I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favourite cow, Bessie'. Paddy thanked the Judge and proceeded. 'Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, ‘My fav'rit cow, into de trailer and was drivin' her down de road when this huge Eversweet truck and trailer came tundering tru a stop sign and hit me trailer right in da side. I was trown into one ditch and Bessie was trown into da udder ditch. By Jaysus I was hurt, very bad like, and didn't want to move. However, I could hear old Bessie moanin' and groanin'. Smiling, she attempted to strike up a conversation with him. "How are you today?" "Fine, thank you," he responded, and turned back to his book. "I love the beach. Do you come here often?" she asked. "First time since my wife passed away 2years ago," he replied, and turned back to his book. "I'm sorry to hear that. My husband passed away three years ago and it is very lonely," she countered."Do you live around here?" she asked. "Yes, I live over in Haifa," he answered, and again he resumed reading. The Rider’s Mag - Page 12
Trying to find a topic of common interest, she persisted, "Do you like pussy cats?" With that, the man dropped his book, came over to her blanket, tore off her swimsuit and gave her the most passionate love making of her life. When the cloud of sand began to settle, she gasped and asked the man, "How did you know that was what I wanted?" The man replied, "How did you know my name was Katz? ******************************************* At the Plaza Hotel, the lights went off right before a couple exchanged vows. Fortunately, she's just in time for dinner and was treated to the best fish and chips she had ever tasted. After dinner she went into the kitchen to thank the chefs, where she was met by two of the Brothers. The first one says, "Hello, I am Brother Michael, and this is Brother Charles." "I'm very pleased to meet you," replies the nun. "I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful dinner. The fish and chips were the best I've ever had. Out of curiosity, who cooked what?" Brother Charles replied, "Well, I'm the fish friar." She turned to the other Brother and says "then you must be....?" "That bread smells about done don't you think, Mom?" he asked. I told him I had set the timer and it still had five minutes. A little later he repeated his suggestion. "Mom, I really think that loaf is done. Maybe you should check it." Always quick to come to my defense, my 13-year-old son said, "Eddie, Mom's been burning that banana bread for 20 years now. I think she knows when to take it out." ************ A prospective juror in a Dallas District Court was surprised by the definition of voluntary manslaughter given the panel: "An intentional killing that occurs while the defendant is under the immediate influence of sudden passion arising from an adequate cause, such as when a spouse's mate is found in a 'compromising position.'" "See, I have a problem with that passion businesss," responded the jury candidate. "During my first marriage, I came in and found my husband in bed with my neighbor. All I did was divorce him. I had no idea that I could have shot him." She wasn't selected for the jury. ************ Three cowboys are sitting around a campfire, out on the lonesome prairie, each with the bravado for which cowboys are famous. A night of tall tales begins. The first says, “I must be the meanest, toughest cowboy there is. Why, just the other day, a bull got loose in the corral and gored six men before I wrestled it to the ground, by the horns, with my bare hands.” The second can’t stand to be bested. “Why that’s nothing. I was walking down the trail yesterday and a fifteen foot rattler slid out from under a rock and made a move for me. I grabbed that snake with my bare hands, bit its head off, and sucked the venom down in one gulp. And I’m still here today.” The third cowboy remained silent, slowly stirring the coals of the campfire with his penis. ************ One day Steve's mom was cleaning his room. In the closet, she found a bondage S&M magazine. This was highly upsetting to her. She hid the magazine until his father got home. When Steve's father walked in the door, she irately handed the magazine to him, and said, "THIS is what I found in your son's closet." He looked at it and handed it back to her without a word. April This astrology has been written in “Quin-trains” meaning there are five lines to the divination. The fifth line will reveal the answer to the other 4 lines. There are 13 twisted spokes in creation of my wheel I use instead of the common 12. Since this wheel is created this way, this allows the reader to approach the wheel in 3 ways. As each sign represents a spoke in the wheel, you can read either what your own spoke has to say or read what all the spokes have to say to share a visual to the whole picture. See how all the spokes complete your wheel. The 13th spoke is what I call the “Dath Spoke” It is the spoke that binds all other spokes together, so you can see exactly what wheel(s) you’re using for your ride. Consider it having extra rubber for extra mileage. You can also read the 1st line of each of the signs to get another insightful message. A perfect name for the shit weather mother nature dumped on us. I ventured off to Barrie for the FUCK WINTER PARTY put on by the Patchless MC. It was snowing like a bitch and the roads were bad but I made it. Went solo this time and that's a first for me but if you know me that's never stopped me from new adventures. There clubhouse was extremely cool and huge. All kinds of space for people and there where tons of people including 3 female bike clubs. The Rumble Dollz, Wild Hearts and Men's Ruin. There DJ playing at just the right volume so that everyone could still talk. It made you forget about the shit blowing around out there. Hanging out with Cody who I had met at the door and Sammy from the Patchless was turning out to be an interesting evening. It was pretty comical and yes I was having a good time but you know when your having fun and you want to party more and you have to drive an hour away you know it's time to depart but that will not be the case at there next one, I will be prepared for next time.

by Dawn Mcilmoyle Times are chaotic and a lot of us have been cooped up for a while, but things are looking up as the weather changes and we head full on into spring. Spring brings out the motorcycles and freedom and the fresh air. It also is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts as the plants start to bloom out of the ground and the birds all return. Before the pandemic of COVID-19 and self-isolation (which for me is a regular thing, so hasn’t been that hard) I did get out to a few events and have a few awesome experiences to write about. I attended the Hearts for Heroes Gala, thrown by Renos for Heroes, which is an organization that does renovations for Veterans that are not covered by Veterans Affairs. I have met many people affiliated with this organization and was gifted with the $200.00/person tickets by Deryl Caruk who is the brother of founder Jim Caruk, Master Contractor and HGTV host. I was fortunate enough to get a picture with Jim, Damon Bennett (Honorary LtCol of 32nd Service Battalion Toronto, and Construction/Renovation Consultant, Kate Campbell (Host of Kate Builds on HGTV) and Chris Dupee (founder of Cadence Health and Wellness). My youngest son (22) came with me as my date to the Gala and we had a blast, although way too may people thought he was my “friend” and I had to quickly correct them saying “He’s my youngest son.” It was the very first event that I had attended that I had no triggers even though I had to face some of my haters (I know they are just jealous now). I got to see some friends I had not seen in a while and mend some fences that had been broken. I met some fantastic people sitting at my table and my son got to find out what an open bar does at an auction. He was in shock when he tried to buy a beer and they said, “It’s complimentary.” We both bought the surprise bags that were for sale for $100.00 each and my kid happened to get one with an envelope and won the 3-piece luggage set. He hugged everyone he was so happy (and maybe a little tipsy). I had to pick up my magazines and got to go see Critter and Brenda. I had a good long talk with Critter about things and he always makes me feel better about myself and encourages me. I really look up to him and his vision and admire what he has done. I had been participating in the Inked Covergirl 2020 contest and made it farther than I ever thought I would. I was 4th in my group before I got voted out. I was supported and encouraged by all my friends across the Country and it felt good and reminded me that I am not alone and do have people that care. With the nice weather, comes the desire to get out more and lucky I got all my magazines delivered before this nasty outbreak and we were all confined to basically home. I went gung-ho on the Monday to deliver magazines because google said certain places were open but they were not, so I delivered a few bundles and went home to try it all again the next day. Rick at Barber Ricks Stylist in Port Perry and I got chatting about some things he does in the motorcycle world and decided that the next time we see each other we will sit down and have a coffee and he will fill me in on where he goes down south to help rebuild old Harleys with an organization he is a part of. I love listening to stories of people assisting others and look forward to that coffee with Rick. On my route I have met the most amazing people and have developed friendships. When I go into these places, they know my name and they make me feel welcome. It brightens my day when I walk into a place and am greeted with a smile and someone saying, “Hey Dawn.” It may seem simple, yet I am so simple I am complicated. I even made my own shirt that says that. I have felt small and unacknowledged for so long that when someone remembers me that I don’t see on a regular basis it makes me happy inside. Vanessa at Pushrod Performance is one of the most genuine, beautiful Souls I have ever met. She is super busy at the shop as everyone wants a tune up for riding season, yet she The Rider’s Mag - Page 24
still told me that if I ever need somebody to talk to that I should stop by, she was always willing to listen. When you don’t feel like you have many people to talk to and someone offers to listen, it means a lot. I got a call from The Veteran Farmer whose main location is in New Brunswick but was visiting his branch in Belleville for a few days and wanted me to stop by. I was supposed to meet up with a few Veteran friends there, but those plans got cancelled however I still went. I had a blast. I took some older The Rider’s Mag’s and put them on a table in the common area and the next thing I knew people were talking to me about riding and how they were looking forward to the weather getting nicer and their freedom. I got to play a bunch of games with the guys and meet the new receptionist. I met 4 Mike’s that day and got so confused. However, I got out of the house and I socialized and it kind of opened some doors to want to going out more. I got to hit up my granddaughter’s birthday party dressed like a Mermaid and was surrounded by little girls at the gymnastics place saying “I love your skirt” I had my Harley Quinn boots on and my granddaughter was so happy with all of her friends playing and getting to be the centre of attention. For me it was like a mini family reunion as both my Sons were there as well as my Princess. Also present were my niece and great-nephew. One of the last places I delivered the magazines was Recycled Gear in Lindsay. I really enjoy walking into this store as there are always different things. The stock is always changing and there is some classic vintage stock there. Morley is always so kind to me. He called me on Valentines Day, although he called me by accident hitting the wrong number on his phone. He apologized but wished me a good day and I wished him one as well. Morley and I got to talking and he knew I hadn’t been in the best mood lately so to brighten my mood he gave me a leather jacket with fringes. I am into that kind of thing; it reminds me of my teenage years in the 80’s and my Mom. I tried to give him some money yet because I had given him some items for snowmobiling season, he insisted I take it just to feel better as a gift from him. Now it will forever be my Morley jacket. When I wear it, I will think of him. The Rider’s Mag - Page 25
As a Veteran with PTSD I am used to social isolation and am trained for crisis so when something is going on and everyone is panicking, I wonder why, so I can attempt to find a solution. I tried to laugh at the chaos of people panic buying because of COVID-19 until I went to the grocery store and saw there was no toilet paper and stocks were low everywhere, if not completely sold out. I wasn’t sad for me and I didn’t start to panic over myself as I know I will always find a way to adapt (I have like a zillion unmatched socks and a washing machine) I started to panic about the people that had no money and could not go stock up on items. The seniors, the disabled, the ones on a pension that cannot afford extra. My first thoughts were about how we are about to see if real human decency does exist. I saw the price gougers, the ones trying to benefit from chaos, but I also saw people starting Facebook groups to ensure that everyone has what they need, and sharing can take place. There is always good where there is bad, it is nature. I have what I need, nothing more. Dutchess Von Dee has what she needs and we can see anything through together. As I see my friends across the Country helping out in whatever way they can I made a decision to donate money to my local foodbank so that others can still have what they need in these times that feel like the end of days yet are the days of new beginnings and change.

I am surprised at the effort some people take to store their bikes for winter. In addition to sensible things like oil changes, fuel stabilizer, pulling the battery, and some even spraying oilbased products on chrome, chains, etc., some cover or wrap their bikes. You could argue that some take better care of their bikes than they do themselves. Things like always checking rear wheel alignment and checking bolts and fasteners before a ride. Some always listen for the smallest noise or a hint of some improper vibration etc.. It is a little strange, we cannot see a posted speed sign until we are 20 feet from it, but a new rear tire wins over new glasses every time. Some of us although we refuse to accept it are getting old just like our bikes. The top end of the bike and a bypass for you were done a few years ago. At some point we have to acknowledge the old cycle is almost done. Sure enough one day you’re riding down the road, and bang the bottom end lets go, the oil light comes on, you pull the clutch in and coast to a stop and put the stand down. The old cycle is done. A few parts off of it will be sold and then its scrap. What about if your ticker blows up? Some of your parts will be used because you signed an organ donor card, but what about your soul? That spirit part inside of you that we all were born with. It will leave your body with all the quirks that make you who you are, but where will the spirit part of you, the part that never wears out and lasts forever, where will it go? Consider for a moment what if. What if everything does not just stop when we stop breathing. What if the spirit part of us leaves our body upon death? Don’t you think, it may be a good idea to investigate the possibilities. Wouldn’t it be good to at least know if anything is required on your part? That’s what Bikers Church exists for, to help you find the truth. Last issue we talked about a personal owner’s manual, we all have access to, it is called the Bible, and the last book of the 66 books in it talks about heaven and that it is fourteen hundred miles square, and the main street is pure gold. Riding season is almost here. I do my best mediation riding my bike. So, when you get out riding this spring maybe turn the stereo off and spend a little quality time thinking about what I just asked, what will happen to your soul when you reach life’s dead end? Do not forget we will always do our best to answer any questions you may have, simply contact us or visit us on our Facebook page – Scugog Bikers Church. On our Facebook page you will find a listing of rides and events that will be happening throughout the summer. We always welcome new riders and look forward to seeing new faces. Also feel free to stop by our Thursday night meets at the portable on 1680 Reach St. Port Perry. Pastor Glenn Biker Church Port Perry

PART V Basic Carburetor Tuning The beginning basics for carburetor tuning are the same as for troubleshooting a problematic Harley. Why try to tune or troubleshoot if the air filter is dirty, or worse plugged with dirt? This will prevent adequate air from reaching the combustion chambers. Likewise, for a partially plugged gas filter or gas cap vent, which will prevent enough gasoline from entering the carburetor. Furthermore, it is imperative that ignition timing is correct. The ignition system’s spark plugs, wires, and coil should work at peak efficiency. A weak yellow spark will drastically affect engine running and power. A non-existent spark will not allow the engine to run. Sparking across the plug electrode should be crisp, either lightning white or blue in color. It is important not to confuse external carburetor or mechanical problems with a jetting situation. For example, a tuner can change carburetor jetting forever but this will not resolve a severe manifold air leak. Minor air leaks may be mitigated by compensating more gas for the extra air intake but this will only create frustrating problems in other areas. Do not tune a cold engine, which requires more gas than when at operating temperature. It can take twenty miles of riding for the engine to warm up for fine-tuning purposes. Do not let an air cooled engine like Harley warm up by idling at rest. Ride the bike or install a high powered fan to run soothing air over the engine as it warms. When external irritations are eliminated as a contributor to poor running, tune each carburetor circuit (idle, slow, mid-range, and high speed) separately to create a base line. First, adjust the idle jet and fuel mixture screw for the best idle. Then, set the main jet for best wide-open throttle (WOT). Next, as in the case of the CV Keihin, tune the mid-range circuit by regulating the needle for steady cruise with light throttle. If experiencing jetting related ride-ability problems, attempt to replicate the problem in all gears. If this occurs in all gears, the problem may be with external components, which is one reason we try to eliminate them before tuning. Replicating the problem in all gears will isolate a problem area, whether it be idle-low speed (slow speed jetting and a mixture screw adjustment), mid-range (needle adjustment), or high speed (main jet adjustment). Some general tenets are if the problem is aggravating when hot, this is a too-rich symptom; if irritating when cold, this is a too-lean symptom; if the situation worsens in higher gears, this is a too-rich symptom and if the situation worsens in lower gears, this is a too-lean symptom. Make only one adjustment at a time to isolate the problem! See if the problem has corrected after each adjustment,. I like to observe spark plug electrode color after every test run. Have at least three new sets of plugs gapped and ready to use. I favor Champion plugs for both plug readings and for use in Harley Davidson. However, mechanics have differing luck with different brand spark plugs. One thing is for sure; Champion is less expensive than H-D spark plugs. I also believe Champion has private-branded spark plugs for the Factory over the years. TC88/96 1999-to-present and Evolution Sportster 1986-to-present use Champion RA8HC. Evolution Big Twin from 1984 to 2000 uses Champion RN12YC. Set plug electrode gap between .038” and .043”. Adjust the idle mixture while idling. Closing the idle mixture screw slowly should cause the idle to become rough. Slowly turn the screw out until the engine again idles smoothly. Add ⅛ to ¼-turn more. If closing the screw makes no difference in idle speed or smoothness, replace the pilot jet with one size under. If finding it necessary to turn the screw out more than three turns, increase the pilot jet size to the next larger size. After setting the idle speed and idle mixture correctly, change to a fresh set of spark plugs. Then, ride the bike at part throttle, gently accelerating but keeping below ½-throttle. The goal for this stage of tuning is to stay within the low speed circuit as much as possible. After a mile or more, pull in the clutch, press the kill button and coast to a stop on the side of the road. Using a glove and plug wrench, remove the hot spark plugs. Examine the insulator and electrodes. The correct colors are white without blistering, off white or off-white with a very slight tan tinge. Blistering white indicates a too-lean AFR condition. This is dangerous. A tan, brown, chocolate brown or black fluffy color indicates a progressively rich to very rich AFR condition that creates excess fuel consumption and a potential power loss. Flat black fluffy residue is always a gas-fouling situation whereas; shiny scaly black residue is certainly combustion chamber oil blowby fouling. Either situation can easily prevent the bike from starting or running. It is normal for the rear cylinder spark plug to read slightly richer than the front. The reason for the difference is inherent in the rear cylinder shrouding and the intake manifold design. Change jetting up or down based on the front cylinder spark plug reading. Up jetting corrects a lean condition, whereas down jetting in size corrects a rich AFR condition. The Rider’s Mag - Page 28
Main jetting for the hi-speed circuit by spark plug reading requires a highway since safe acceleration at WOT through the gears up to and including fourth gear is necessary. Fifth gear is theoretically better but WOT may take this diagnostic testing into illegal and sometimes dangerous speeds. Change to a fresh set of plugs, start the bike, which is warm from previous testing and immediately accelerate at WOT through the gears including fourth gear. Idling or using part throttle will bastardize the plug readings and possibly negate the test. After accelerating through fourth gear, pull in the clutch; push the kill switch and coast to a stop. Remove the spark plugs, examine for color and follow the same procedure with the main jet. If the plugs are reading very white or white with blistering, correct this lean to very lean condition by increasing one size on the main jet. If the plugs are reading a tan, brown, chocolate brown or black and fluffy, correct this rich condition by decreasing at least one size on the main jet depending on how dark the plug reads. Repeat this procedure until the plug readings are correct. After ensuring main jetting is correct, it is time to fine tune the mid-range circuit, which in the case of the CV Keihin is with the needle. Raising the needle clip will lower the needle thus leaning out the AFR mixture. Lowering the clip will raise the needle thus enriching the AFR mixture. After ensuring the spark plugs read correctly, the jetting is as good as good can get and the carburetor will produce maximum (street) power and the most mileage relative to power for the engine and carburetor configuration. Next issue will discuss troubleshooting carburetor problems. I use the circa-1989 to 2006 CV Keihin as an example but the principles apply to all carburetors. Donny Petersen www.donnypetersen.com

with Dingo Here it is, the end of March with riding season just around the corner. The weather people are predicting a warmer than normal April, which sounds great to me. But wait, now we have a virus spreading across North America which has already caused the cancellation of the Spring Motorcycle Show at the International Centre as well as some of the early swap meets around Ontario. Early spring signals the first of many charity rides. On March 29th, Welland County MC announced that the Poki-Barbi-Dan had been cancelled. Here in the Niagara area, we have BRO Niagara’s Cover the Kids annual event Saturday May 2nd. Right now this event is a month or so away, and who knows, maybe things will change for the better by then, but right now, we have restrictions on group events and then there is the “social distancing” thing that I just heard that the government is planning on enforcing this thru fines!! Right now, the general consensus about upcoming events is wait and see. No one is cancelling events at this point. Stay tuned by checking out the Riders Mag Facebook page or my No Name Riders Facebook page for any news concerning local events. Our friends, Lillian and Ed at Tons of Bike Gear opened for the season on Friday, March 13th , but have since chosen to close operations for now because of the Covid19 outbreak. Kinda hard to do a “take-out” or at the door service when you’re trying to get fitted for that new jacket or helmet. Look for them to reopen at the earliest possible time and we will definitely let you know when!! Speaking of March 13th, it was a Port Dover PD13 event day. Went up to pick up a tee-shirt for Diane from the S-Bend Restaurant, accompanied by my friend Katherine, who want to grab a few pics and have lunch while there. Have to admit, I was surprised at the number of bikes that showed up along with a few riders from across the border that made the chilly ride to Dover. Stopped at Route 6 to see Jayne….always a pleasure to see and talk to Jayne. Her store got busy while I was there so it was “see you later”. Down the street at On the Fringe it was business as usual but not quite as crowded as a summertime Friday the 13th. Paul, aka Thong Man, was cruising the streets on his bike looking like a Leprechaun, but with shorts on. Headed over to the Legion for a cocktail and hamburger and fries where we ran into our friend Tim (OGOM) for conversation and laughs. Katherine got a bunch of pictures and it was getting damp and chilly so decided to leave. There were still riders coming into town when we left. Late spring also brings the beginning of Bike Night season. Like a lot of other areas, we in Niagara have one every night of the week, Monday to Friday, and on some nights, the option of checking out 2 on the same night at different locations. Hopefully, this virus situation ends before the main riding season gets into gear and we can all get out to enjoy what we love doing. A shout out to the Ravens Nest Motorcycle Shop located at the corner of Hwy 140 and Buchner Road, Welland. Shop is at the back of the building, Unit 5. They service all makes of motorcycles as well as sales. Give them a call at 905-732-3342. Remember, stay safe!! Dave dbarber11@hotmail.com dave@theridersmag.com The Rider’s Mag - Page 30

Hello, my friends in the wind! Another spring has sprung and I find myself about to embark on an epic two-wheeled adventure. Imagine that. This go-round will take me through Sedona Arizona and up to the Grand Canyon before taking another week-long ride down through Baja Mexico. The trip started out as a dirt biking expedition through Arizona on a backcountry discovery route and has morphed into a 3000 mile BMW ride. I have been to the Grand Canyon but never hiked to the bottom, so this is the trip! It will take a full 10-12 hour day to complete the trails to the bottom and back to the rim. The experience will be epic and memorable. The weather is going to be in the 50-60 degree range, Fahrenheit of course. I will be taking full advantage of air BnB’s throughout the trip and avoiding any large crowds in hopes of dodging this dreaded Coronavirus pandemic. I work in health care when I’m not touring the planet and my office has closed for the next two weeks. Actually, most things in the U.S.A. are closed for the next 15-21 days and maybe beyond. What a crisis. Luckily for all of us, motorcycle riding is a solo sport that can still be enjoyed during these crazy times. My boyfriend and I have traded our 4x4 van in on a 4x4 shuttle bus and with any luck, we will be living in it by next summer. Our master plan is to sell the house and most things in it, load up our bikes in the bus and tow my jeep behind. We will spend our first summer on the road in a magical little place called Grandjean Idaho from May to September of 2021. Vanlife is calling and we cannot wait. The Rider’s Mag - Page 32
Our adventures will continue to unfold and expand and as soon as this fall we will be riding bikes through Ecuador and Peru to the famous Machu Picchu. Next year when we leave
Idaho we are planning a European route through France, Italy and Switzerland provided that the world is back up and running by then of course. Anyways, the point I’m beating around the bush at here is that I will still be traveling and blogging my trips at Motorambling.com. But, I’m sad to say I will not be keeping up with my column here at The Riders Mag. I do hope you have all enjoyed my past two years of photos and ramblings and I hope to see you on the interwebs as well. So, farewell and ride on! Thanks for following along! Forever your friend in the wind, Jessie Lee @ Motorambling The Rider’s Mag - Page 33
This month’s column is going to be much shorter because of all the havoc the Wuhan Virus has brought us in the last few weeks! This has resulted in many Spring motorcycle events and club parties that traditionally take place in March being either postponed or canceled! This includes the one show that I look forward to every year, the Spring Motorcycle Show in Toronto which to me is a motorcycle show geared for bikers. Show Promoter, Peter Derry has worked hard over the years to make it one of the finest in Canada and I hope that he may be able to reschedule but at this time we are all held prisoner by this damn Covid-19 virus. When you live in Eastern Ontario, you always play a Cat & Mouse Game with Spring! Wherein, we get a few days of above zero degrees with rain so we get excited at seeing dead patches of grass erupt through the snow, only to then, get snow covered in snow again! It’s no wonder we a little cranky this time of year. This winter went by a little easier for some of us! The members of several area motorcycle clubs decided to help the season pass faster by having breakfast together with friends and family, including an organized road trip or two. Eastern Ontario is home to some of Canada’s largest producers of maple syrup in the world! Many of them have facilities open to the public. People can enjoy a good old fashioned pancake breakfast while at the same time see how the sap is collected and how the syrup is made. Members of the Last Disciples MC, ARM (Assoc of Recovering Motorcyclists) Ottawa Chapter and The Celtic Brotherhood decided to meet up at Wheelers Maple
Pancake House. Located near MacDonald’s Corners just west of Perth for a community breakfast as well as take a tour of several buildings they have filled with pioneer artifacts and their petting zoo. Not only did the clubs use The Rider’s Mag - Page 34
The Rider’s Mag - Page 35
the experience to bond more, they also used the time together to discuss providing support for each other’s upcoming events during the summer! All their clubs are deeply involved in community service and helping each other and this makes our motorcycle community just that much stronger. There were far too many people to mention but special thanks to Brothers Jim Poulin, Yves Brisbois. Marty Laporte & Rene Corbeil of the Last Disciples MC as well as Brothers Blair Gardiner, Charles Lapointe and Dave Nash of ARM (Association of Recovering Motorcyclists) Ottawa Chapter! My Brother Chuckay from The Celtic Brotherhood was a great help in getting to this shindig. Hopefully this will become an annual event and I encourage other clubs to organize events like this and get to know your brothers from other mothers while making the winter pass.
At the end of February a number of us made the trek down to the Annual Montreal Motorcycle Show held in the Palais du Congres in the downtown core of the city. This is mainly a dealer’s show with a limited number of motorcycle related business and vendors but this year I have to really stress the word limited. For most riders in Eastern Ontario this show is the opportunity to see some of the new models of motorcycles on the market but this year there was a very noticeable decrease in booths that Quebec motorcycle and riding clubs usually occupy to promote their events and increase membership! As well, there was as a visible shortage of custom painters and independent vendors, selling items such as leather goods, t-shirts etc were almost non-existent. I am not sure if this was due to the costs for booth space or if it is part of a new policy by the show management but whatever the case it made for a quick in and quick out event and many people felt the show wasn’t really worth the effort. Our friends from Speed Trix were as usual a popular exhibit and brought a few of their newer creations that many of us hadn’t seen before including a bizarre rendition of a reverse trike with two wheels up front and one in the back similar to the Can-Am Spider that they built out of a Harley with a special electric tilting front end. While it was certainly interesting to look at I think, I still prefer my trikes to have the two wheels in the rear of the bike. Aside from the novelty bikes that Speed Trix is well known for fabricating, they also build some more down to earth customs. This included an orange and white number with a Springer front end, solo seat and custom sissy bar, and a sanitary little beauty in green which had the attention of several of the TCB. One last motorcycle they had on display that for me, hovered between hauntingly beautiful or creepy! It looked like it was covered in suede and almost everything metal including the engine was a metallic copper color! Rest assured, it The Rider’s Mag - Page 36
was a beautiful creation but I get the goosebumps when I touch suede and this bike screamed suede! While we were walking around, we came across a friend or ours whose booth is well known at motorcycle shows and events in Toronto and eastern Ontario. Alain Delarosbil, sells biker rings in stainless steel and sterling silver and while the show wasn’t working out for him, he was excited that he will be opening up a store in Trois Rivieres later this year! While I wish him luck with his store, I hope he will continue to set up at events back here. Not far away Indian Motorcycles, had a large exhibit of their line of bikes. Amid the display, was one model which really caught my eye! The matte military green color with little chrome, gave it a stealth fighter appearance which I thought was quite attractive. I guess the highlight off the show for some of us was The Rider’s Mag - Page 37
having our picture taken with a giant chipmunk who was the mascot for an insurance company. Also down wandering around the show was Big Bird aka Robert Webber from BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) Ottawa Chapter and his lovely lady Cheryl Schneider aka Fabulous. So far the Peterborough Swap Meet and the annual “Heritage” party hosted by The Celtic Brotherhood have been cancelled so we will just have to wait to see what if any other events in April may have to be cancelled but both myself
and the rest of The Riders Mag family will keep you informed as soon as we hear anything. I would like to announce that the Falcons MC Cap City Chapter have set the date for the 2nd Annual Battlefield Run for August 22nd with members of The Celtic Brotherhood providing their Free Breakfast to all the ride’s participants to promote brain injury and PTSD awareness so be sure and add this event to your ride calendar. One other thing that I want all of my readers and supporters of The Riders Mag to know is that there is over a half a million brain injury survivors in the province of Ontario alone and many of them are bikers but even if they weren’t, they are our family members, our friends, our neighbors and people we work with who need our support for they are dealing with the “Invisible Injury” so please contact your local brain injury association to see about helping them out whether by donating money or even better as a volunteer. If you are not sure who to contact The Rider’s Mag - Page 38
then please email me at my address below and I will find out for you. If you would like any more information about events or rides that I mention in my column you can go on Facebook and go to “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Events & Ride in Eastern Ontario and as always I urge you to support the events and rides that are created by bikers and clubs in your area because unlike slick organizations that run events the local riders and clubs will be the same people that will come and support yours. Please remember to spend your money with businesses such as those who advertise in The Riders Mag because they have proven themselves to be Biker Friendly and shown their support for our lifestyle so in turn they deserve our support and business back. If you have any issues that you think might be of interest to your fellow readers please reach out to me and let me know either by email or Facebook. If you have an event or ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertize or even perhaps become a distributor of The Riders Mag, please contact me by email or phone. As always I want you please remember that we make our Motorcycle Communities stronger by making them better. email: theridersmag.beau@gmail.com Twiiter..
