SUNDAY MAY 3rd

Cruising With Critter Ok I’ve had more than enough winter and cold shit to do me for a long time. Finally things are starting to break and the snow is starting to disappear and a glance at the back yard reveals to me that “The Wonderdogs have been well fed over the winter months and can now only hope that it can melt a bit at a time to enable me to do yard clean up in stages rather than one big soggy mess. It’s been a busy time for me lately trying to squeeze Mag stuff in with my truck driving gig and still get out covering events. The Spring Motorcycle Show is almost upon us now and trying to get ready for it is a bit of a challenge as well because it coincides with production and distribution of the April issue of the Mag. I find myself constantly playing catch-up and caught between being on the road to cover recent events like our Calendar feature, Friday the 13th in Port Dover, Clare’s 60th Open House Celebration which encompassed two days to get to all of the spots then to get back in time to write it all up, do photo selections and draw cartoons in time for this issue. It is a challenge to be sure. Then there are the bikes to get ready. The Trike is at Bronson’s getting some TLC to be ready for The Spring Motorcycle Show. We won’t have all the things completed that I wanted to in time for the show as my

painter Jabber sold his place and is in the process of moving to beautiful Kirkfeild so the rear fenders and lowers won’t have the flames on them and will just go back on in straight black for now. I won’t have time to get the foot clutch and hand shifter installed in time either but she will be ready for the show and the riding season when it gets here. Petoonia is getting some much needed and well deserved attention as well this year as Burlington Bad Bob has the beer box at his shop to do some special work on the latching system and other details and will give it back to me painted black along with side bags for me to airbrush my purple pearl flames on as well as a new fairing that I hope to get done at the same time. I have the old parts still on her so I can put her on the road sans beer box while I complete the paint if I have to. That is the luxury of having extra body parts. Her new battery is waiting to be installed and the nice folks at Daytona Motorsports on Steeles Ave. in Weston sent over a new LED Headlight system for her that they want me to evaluate. That will be installed soon and a few other little things need to be done to dress the old girl up a bit and I’m pretty sure that she will need need tires this year as well but haven’t had time to check yet. I’ve got some busy days and nights ahead. Thurst T’s Calendar feature Shoot. It was a nice day for a drive to Collingwood as it was the nicest day

ees had showed up to lend a hand and a festive feel to the day. I have a sneaky suspicion that the mood is 7 MAIN STREET EAST SELKIRK ONT. N0A 1P0 always fairly festive here. Anyhow it is a great looking store with all the glowe’d had since fall and temperatures were actually on the rious wood plank floors and the classy way that things are rise. I rolled into the parking lot and parked the Black Bitch displayed like Paul’s old leather jump suits from his dare devil/ stunt rider Glory Days, along with picgathered up my camera and extra tures, clippings and mementos from bundles of Mags and made my those days gone by all framed and way into the great looking shop protected for eternity. There were picthat Paul and Wendy are justifiably tures of a slender Paul atop his motorso proud of. That great old school cycle in full flight or of him posing in type of motorcycle shop smell his leather suits that are long past fitgreeted me and if I closed my eyes I ting him with his “70’s Porn Star Muscould imagine walking into some of tache”. the great shops from the past like Paul emerged from behind the Firths and Russell Winters. Anyone counter with his usual big smile and that has been in shops like that hearty laugh that instantly makes will know exactly what I’m talking you feel welcome. The show room about while younger riders will was packed with bikes with two in the window displays. The probably just shake their heads in wonderment. There was already a lot of activity as friends and employ- ’59 Panhead that Thursty and his crew designed and built for owner Shawn Dockeray was to be the chosen one and we went about getting it out of the window and positioned for the shoot just as the model along with Wendy arrived. The bike was a great choice and looked great. Veteran mechanic, Reg Clarke and their apprentice Haydon Westgate had done a great job with the bike which had a fantastic dragon theme to it. With all kinds of great detail work and the subtle little details that Paul is famous for. The bike even graces the cover of Preston Cycles’ catalogue. The model, Natasha, was a stunning brunette, who is also Paul and Wendy’s niece, had volunteered to do the shoot and I could instantly understand why they wanted her. They disappeared upstairs to change into the first of sevMTO Certified Shop

eral outfits that we would use throughout the shoot. Natasha was a treat to work with and made my life really easy and the time just flew by but we got it done. They have a great crew of people who hang around and help out and one awesome lady, Trish came in to lend a hand, apparently she was doing the bookkeeping but ended up working there in sales and her good looks and sparkling personality certainly compliment Paul and Wendy’s laid back demeanor. I had a great time and when we finished we all headed up to Boston Pizza for lunch, where apparently everybody knows everybody and everybody knows Paul and Wendy. The whole festive mood just kept on and was still keeping on as I said my goodbyes and headed for home. If you find yourself up in Collingwood stop in and check the place out. Great people! Great Shop! Great time! Thanks for you hospitality!

647-226-3871 and I found a good spot to park the Black Bitch and headed up to Main St. and wasn’t the least bit surprised to find master promoter, Shawn McCooey from the famed Ft. tures and talk a while but others stopped by and when he launched into his spiel I wandered off leaving him to do what he enjoys best! An event couldn’t hope for a better PR guy as he is always on his game even if he makes it up as he goes. We picked up a new advertiser recently from right on Main St. in beautiful downtown Port Dover. 223 Main Street, to be exact, known as Johnny Rebel’s Steel Horse Boutique and I found myself right in front of it at an opportune time as the crowds were still a bit sparse and I could get in and take some good shots and get to actually talk to owners John and Jayne without being a pain in the ass. We like to support those who support us and the timing couldn’t be better. It is a great looking store inside and out with some great looking items for guys and gals as well as stuff that just looks great whatever your gender.

They seem to have some real promotional skills as well and the fantastic front window display with the old Panhead was really attracting attention. They are both great people and I’m sure we could talk for long periods of time but things were starting to pick up and I’m sure they had stuff to do to prepare for what would be a very busy day. I headed off and wandered down the Street heading for Clare’s where Richard, Gale and their crew were having a massive sale offering 40% discount on everything in the store. John Clare himself was out front with the Fabulous Fenwick Lions Raffle Bike selling those really popular tickets. After talking to John awhile I made my way into the store and checked things out and found a couple or three items for the Wonderdogs Harley Wardrobe. I was supposed to meet with Sr. at some point but just when some point was to occur hadn’t officially been established and phone calls went unanswered. He had a bunch of the

Tit shirts that JR had sponsored and paid for out of his own pocket as I couldn’t find a sponsor for them and had no interest in producing on my own. So I continued wandering the mean Streets of Port Dover calling his number periodically with negative results. I did manage to collect a couple of unsolicited boob shots along the way without having any shirts. I wandered up to Angelo’s encountering our other Cartoonist Mr. Mike along the way and being boss now, I was able to declare beer break without fear of being vetoed by a higher authority. They even had 50! The gods were smiling on me! I ran into a few other friends and acquaintances

while there. It was now after 3:00 o’clock and the crowds were starting to thin dramatically when I was finally able to get a hold of SR. who had made it into town but was unable to find a parking spot anywhere close to Angelo’s. There was no way that I was going to load up with shirts and try to get a bunch of tit shots at this time of day with the crowds on the wane and none of the usual crowd anywhere in sight. I was getting ready to pack it in and so it was… Sr. and I never got to rendezvous after all. I headed for the wilds of Pelham where I would stay the night to put me in position to cover Clare’s open house early

Up early and in search for a breakfast spot which I found in beautiful downtown Fenwick and it was worth the drive. An excellent breakfast served by a waitress who was by herself but looked after a large group of patrons as if she was an army of waitresses and all with an amazing smile! It was a great start to the day. I made my way back to Hwy. 20 to where Clare’s Mother Store sits on the corner and the place was already busy. I made my way inside and found Lisa busy as usual trying

to get the coffee machines working and keeping the large plates and platters of donuts filled. She took me on a tour of the place introducing me to the various groups and individuals that take part in this event and who Clare’s sponsor in some way these are long time relationships as Clare’s takes pride in their involvement in the Community. This is what John Clare refers to as the Mother ship and is where he spends a great deal of his time. Here, while the emphasis, where it come to motorcycles, is metric motorcycles but it is not just motorcycles as they have RV’s of all makes and models Quad runners and racing bikes and lots of other equipment. It is where it all began before he expanded to the Niagara on the Lake store that is strictly Harley-Davidson. While different in the type of clientele they attract at each location they share the common trait of a huge loyal customer base that is based on good quality service and after sale care. Really caring about all aspects of their business and their customers. This place is huge and has seen many additions to the building to allow for the expansion as the need arose and the place is still packed to the brim with bikes and equipment. They are very supportive of racing, attracting and encouraging young racers into the sport and sponsoring them once they get there. Like young Scott Maguire who had a tremendous racing season last year and hopes to do even better this year and benefits from the encouragement and support he receives from Clare’s and the YEA RS

Welland County Motorcycle Club. They are also really big on safety and training as evident from their involve-

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 12

ment and support of training programs such as The Motorcycle Training courses offered by Niagara College. Before the online registration was available there used to be huge line-ups at these open houses just to register for the courses. One really good option for those thinking about getting into motorcycling would be the introduction to Motorcycling, where the college supplies the motorcycle and gives an introductory session so you can see if motorcycling is for you without first buying a motorcycle. This could well be the subject of an upcoming article in the Mag as we are very supportive of motorcycle safety as well. I also talked to members of the Quad Niagara ATV Club who also receive tremendous support from Clare’s in their quest to promote their club and their sport. They have experienced much success in creating an enormous course for riders of not just quads but dirt bikes and other off road or dual purpose vehicles. With their ex-

tremely large membership they have also made huge inroads to get insurance companies to give them a better rate on insurance making the sport even more viable than previously. I then got to meet with John Clare himself along with his lovely wife Donna before she took off to take care of something that needed tending to. These are hardworking, hands on people with a tremendous work ethic and some far younger would have trouble keeping up with them. He has a great crew working for him and he firmly believes as his father did before him that in business you are only as good as your employees and you hire good people, give them responsibility pay them and treat them well and let them do their jobs. It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to sit and talk to John as he has stories and memories that could fill volumes and it would be something if someone someday could get those stories told and put down on paper. He has tales of how it was when business

was done and contracts firmed up with a handshake and when someone’s word meant something more than just words that were spoken. John has pictures which he refers to constantly. He brought out a binder with more pictures and clippings and a newspaper that they produced after 30 years in business. He speaks of times and events before insurance issues got in the way of a good event and before things got so litigious. John is a Life member of The Welland County Motorcycle Club having joined in 1950 and is still very active in the Club to this day. He still considers himself to be just a motorcycle enthusiast who was lucky enough to work in the industry he loved. The motorcycle and the sport are his passion. Like I said I could talk to John all day and soak up the history and bask in the nostalgia but this was a busy day for all involved and there were other waiting to speak to him and I still had to get to the Niagara on the Lake location. So I took my leave and made my way out of the extremely

busy shop and out into the parking lot where some motorcycles had been ridden in despite the rainy weather, hopped in The Black Bitch for the drive to Clare’s HarleyDavidson. I arrived to find an absolutely jammed parking lot and an equally crowded store. I made my way in after stopping to talk to some friends outside. Members of The Fabulous Fenwick Lions were there at their usual spot just inside the front door where they were selling tickets on their Raffle Bike. There were members of Niagara Hog at their great looking display as well. This is one busy spot. There were great bargains to be had and there were lots of folks out to take advantage of the savings as evident by the long lineups at the checkout counters. But they had great staff and plenty of them and the lines were definitely moving. I hung out here for a while checking out the bikes and all the chrome goodies that I had trouble talking myself out of buying before heading for home to get my pictures downloaded and stories written before deadline.

Well it’s been another very cold month with no chance of this chick riding in this area! I’ve lost a few people this month who were very special to me in their own ways so it seems this months adventures are taking me down the ABATE memory lane. ABATE first formed in 1989, it’s come a long way since then. I first met ABATE in Toronto in 1990 at one of their parties, just decided to ride over and see what it was all about. A very small group of people started the organization that has and still does have a huge impact on many communities, many families, and many bikers. I’ve known a lot of ABATE people for many years and am very honoured to still have many of them as friends. This month I attended the ABATE Provincial Meeting in hopes of seeing old friends and picking up a “Dix” patch. Lucky me, lots of old friends

there, John and Rob Toronto, the Clinton bunch, Mama Bear and Bob, Chico and Sandra, and many more. It always amazes me to see how professionally and quickly this group gets through it’s business while still respecting the concerns of everyone. Thank you Steve for the ride down and the company, it was a bit of a strange day, both happy to see old friends and sad to see Dix not there.

celebration there will be a ride that will end at the Huron County ABATE Chapter’s Chili Party. The Chili Party date had been set some time ago and Dix often attended so the two events will be a fitting combination. As always it was fantastic to see my old friends Hellcat and Sherry from Huron Chapter ABATE. They’ve been involved with ABATE for over 20 years and like many, continue to dedicate a huge amount of time and resources towards the organization and they never stop. ABATE keeps the community love flowing all year long and this winter was no exception. The Huron Chapter donated $1,000 to Autism just recently and then there’s the pedal wheel chair story. Hellcat told me the story about the wheelchair on the phone (and he’s a badass biker) but I’m pretty sure his voice cracked near the end. A child in the community needed a pedal powered wheelchair to enhance his therapy but his family could not afford such and expensive item. The pedal power wheel chair was provided by ABATE to this family and their child who within months was out of the chair and walking with two canes, then one cane. Then one day Hellcat was at a Sledge Hockey event and there was a tug on his jacket. When Hellcat turned around it was the little guy standing on his own two feet, he

just wanted to say thank you, he no longer needed the pedal chair. The wheelchair was then used by another child who no longer needs it and is now at the Huron Health Department where it will be used by more children. One child at a time, that’s how they roll! All the chapters have stories like this, they are quite focused on grass roots charities, the ones that affect their community and their neighbors. ABATE has added a few new chapters, Georgian Bay (Tara area) and Brantford. If you’re thinking of starting a chapter in your area, just contact ABATE Ontario and they will walk you through it. The Georgian Bay chapter consists of a few old friends so I attended their social night this month as well. Good to see old friends (again Chico . . .) and meet some new people. I almost wanted to put my helmet on as the ice ceiling staples looked a bit questionable but hey, what’s life without risk? We can’t bubble wrap everything! Soon it will be riding season and there will be more adventures involving riding our motorcycles instead of looking at them and talking about them. I’m looking forward to Dover again, likely be a few more bikes than in February as the temperature will be 20 - 30 degrees warmer! Can’t wait to meet up with some of my old Hamilton area biker friends again and have a few well deserved flashback shits and giggles . . . It’s gonna be a good one! There have been a few motorcycle sightings in Ontario this week with the dry roads and above freezing temperatures. I think I might crack soon. After all, riding a motorcycle isn’t a matter of life or death, it’s much more important than that! To those of you who are out there riding, “RIDE ON YOU CRAZY BASTARDS!” . . . see you soon!’

Fighting for Your Rights Damn unnerving . . . but immeasurably satisfying . . . when ya flog a dead horse & the beast jumps up and gallops into the sunset! The old and wrinkled JuJu Man read the bones, gazed into my eyes, and cackled loudly. Could be that there’s hope fer us yet, Eh Ollie? This year, although in its infancy, is happily bleaching away the sour memories of 2014 and replaced them with an enthusiastic glimpse into the future of the Ontario Confederation of Clubs. Our 2015 member roster has swelled due to the interest of new groups and individuals who are sympathetic to the pressures facing bikers today. The 2014 OCC Unity Ride proved to be a huge success with many, many member clubs participating in our demonstration of unity among the clans. Attendance at our quarterly meetings is way up with many volunteers eager to assist with causes that further biker’s rights in Ontario. While things appear to be rosy for the OCC, this is not a time for us to bask in the shade of our accomplishments – quite the reverse! Following on the heels of an extremely disappointing provincial election, it is now time for us to bring pressure on our elected officials to review and reassess their stand on biker-related issues in Ontario. There are many requiring action and attention; Single-Rider Access to Ontario HOV lanes - a change to the current law regarding handlebar height – LE discriminatory profiling as a means to detain and harass lawful motorcycle riders simply because of their demeanor - the current push by Ontario municipalities to enact noise restrictions on motorcycles - and the constant pressure by law enforcement to harass and harangue certain clubs simply because they maintain a clubhouse. All of which illustrate that now is not the time to relax our grip on the issues facing bikers in Ontario. This month’s featured OCC Member Club is the Devils Progress M.C. which was founded on May 18th, 2012. DPMC is a small, close knit brotherhood with members are located in and around the GTA. The club’s motto is “Never judge a

book by its cover for even the Devil can change”. The club demonstrates its commitment, to its motto, by lending support to charities across Ontario through attending motorcycle rides and poker runs or working with the charities directly. One such charity is Heroes in Black which helps to clothe, educate and give hope to homeless youth in Ontario. DPMC is all about bikes, brotherhood and the rights of riders. Although not motorcycle brand specific, DPMC is lifestyle specific and are always on the hunt for potential future brothers. For more information on Devils Progress M.C., check them out via www.devilsprogressmc.com The OCC petition demanding Single Rider Access to Ontario HOV lanes was presented to the Minister of Transport for Ontario prior to the election, but it was dismissed. Now there is a new Minister of Transport, who we can only hope, has the smarts to realize that denying access is anal-thinking and not in keeping with twenty-first century solutions to gridlock and the safe movement of citizens. Biker profiling has successfully been defeated in some American states, but it has not been challenged in Ontario - but that will soon change, now that there are USA precedents in law. Noise Bylaws are a seemingly innocent solution to noise-pollution, but they are ever-increasingly being utilized as a harassment tactic by the dogs of the establishment. This is yet another abuse of the current statutes that must be strenuously challenged in the courts. The establishment has displayed contempt for our lifestyle by allowing law enforcement to distort the letter of the law in order to subject bikers to unsubstantiated profiling simply because of our attitude and demeanor. This bias is eagerly supported by a media thirsting for sensationalism in order to increase readership and market share. Bikers have long been vilified in movies, television and print - but now it appears that resentment and envy has replaced common sense while fiction has replaced fact in our society. Every biker should wake-up and realize that our rights are being undermined and that each of us must do their part to fend off the onslaught of unnecessary persecution simply because of our chosen lifestyle. How can you play a part in the struggle? Simply by supporter the OCC and decide yur level of involvement - which is entirely up to you. Visit www. occ4u.org today and remember – you don’t have to be a clubber to become a member of the Ontario Confederation of Clubs. Larry Lilly aka Duh Roostah timleighbell@bellnet.ca OCC Treasurer

MY VERSION OF MARCH BREAK AND IT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR! A blond man shouts frantically into the phone. “My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!” “Is this her first child?” asks the doctor. “No,” he shouts, “this is her husband!” A blond man was driving home, drunk as a skunk. Suddenly he has to swerve to avoid a tree, then another, then another. A cop car pulls him over, so he tells the cop about all the trees in the road. The cop says, “That’s your air freshener swinging about!” A blond man’s dog goes missing and he is frantic. His wife says, “Why don’t you put an ad in the paper?” He does, but two weeks later the dog is still missing. “What did you put in the paper?” his wife asks. “Here boy!” he replies. A blond man is in jail. The guard looks in his cell and sees him hanging by his feet. “Just WHAT are you doing?” he asks. “Hanging myself,” the blond replies. “It should be around your neck,” says the guard. “I tried that,” he replies, “but then I couldn’t breathe.”

Two little boys are going to the hospital the next day for operations. Theirs will be first on the schedule. The older boy leans over and asks, “What are you having done?” The second boy says, “I’m getting my tonsils out, and I’m afraid.” The first boy says, “You’ve got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up, they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It’s a breeze.” The second boy then asks, “What are you going in for?” The first boy says, “Circumcision.” “Whoa!” the second boy replies. “Good luck, buddy. I had that done when I was born. Couldn’t walk for a year.” Just thought you should know... The year was 1947. Some of you will recall that on July 8, 1947, a little more than 65 years ago, numerous witnesses claim that an Unidentified Flying Object, (UFO), with five aliens aboard, crashed onto a sheep and mule ranch just outside Roswell , New Mexico . This is a well-known incident that many say has long been covered-up by the U.S. Air Force, as well as other Federal

Agencies and Organizations . However, what you may NOT know is that in the month of April, year 1948, nine months after the historic day, the following people were born: Barrack Obama Sr. Albert A. Gore, Jr. Hillary Rodham William J. Clinton John F. Kerry Howard Dean Nancy Pelosi Dianne Feinstein Charles E. Schumer Barbara Boxer Joe Biden This is the obvious consequence of aliens breeding with sheep and jack-asses. I truly hope this bit of information clears up a lot of things for you. It certainly did for me. And now you can stop wondering why they support the bill to help all Illegal Aliens. Billy Bob and Luther were talking one afternoon when Billy Bob tells Luther, “Yaw know, I reckon I’m ‘bout ready for a vacation. Only this year I’m gonna do it different. The last few years, I took your advice about where to go. “Three years ago you said to go to Hawaii. I went to Hawaii and Earlene got pregnant. Then two years ago, you told me to go to the Bahamas, and Earlene got pregnant again. Last year you suggested Tahiti and darned if Earlene didn’t get pregnant again.” Luther asks Billy Bob, “So, what you gonna do this year that’s different?” “I’m taking Earlene with me.” “Turtle”

THURST-T’S CYCLE SHOP/BUILDER OF THE MONTH It is hard to miss the large, eye catching, Iconic, fire breathing Dragon bike Logo that is proudly displayed on the great looking building facing onto the very busy Hwy. 26, in Collingwood. It has become somewhat of a landmark. It is home to Thurst T’s Cycle run by Paul Thurston, his wife Wendy and a great crew. When you walk through the doors into the bright clean showroom you know that you are entering a traditional “Old School” motorcycle shop, not by the fact that there is a selection great looking motorcycles on display but from the comforting smell and feel that the beautiful plank floors and decor exude. It is “Aroma Therapy, Biker style” as a calming, relaxing blend of the wood itself mingles with the distinctive smell of rubber, oil and leather, which, especially to an older biker produces a most welcoming sensation that promises that this isn’t just a run of the mill motorcycle shop where bikes and parts and other related items are just plunked down where they will fit but a place where traditions and values are important and kept alive. It is a departure from what has become the norm in many other stores. Everything has been laid out and displayed effectively and it lends the shop a look of organization and you just know that you are dealing with people who don’t just work here but people who love what they do and who are proud to be able to provide you with service. All this is before you actually meet Paul, Wendy or any of the great staff. That is when you will know for certain that you have come to the right place. They are all knowledgeable and friendly but their enthusiasm and humour is contagious. Paul is a character, to say the least and was one of the most popular participants of a Canada’s Worst Driver TV show segments that still hold the record for the most bleeps in a single segment of the show. The fact that Paul is an “Old School” biker is immediately evident from his appearance and demeanor but as you look around the

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 26

store you will discover that Paul is also a part of Canadian Motorcycle history. He was Canada’s premiere motorcycle stunt rider and Dare Devil who thrilled thousands of spectators both here in Canada and abroad by jumping over cars on a motorcycle. Framed newspaper and magazine clippings along with pictures of his not always successful, but always entertaining feats are displayed along with his leather outfits on the walls. This career came about one day, while sitting around with friends watching Evil Knievel doing his thing on TV, when Paul, who, up to this point, had never jumped his motorcycle over anything except maybe a puddle or two, announced to his friends that he could do that. That statement was met with some skepticism from his friends. It wasn’t mentioned whether alcohol or other substances were involved in the making this bold announcement that would soon shape his life and bring him both the glory of victory as well as the agony of defeat as he set out to prove that he could indeed do that. His first jump was in Wellington County and he was to jump six cars but miscalculated a tad and overshot his landing resulting in three crushed vertebrae and a split in his spine. After the Jack Daniels therapy proved to be less than effective as an actual cure he figured he should go to the hospital to let them take a look. Paul had always had a passion for motorcycles and was greatly impressed and influenced by the work of such notable motorcycle geniuses of the day such as Edjo, Bronson, Donny Petersen, and the bikes that they were building and were winning acclaim and prizes at Motorcycle Shows. He and his buddy “Quibbles” would haunt their shops picking up tips and pointers and Paul knew that that is what he wanted to do. But it was determined that they would have lots of fun doing it! He started working on bikes in 1972 at Action Kawisaki on Weston Rd. then moved around a bit to Cycleworld and a tiny

shop on Oakdale called Oakdale Cycle where they mostly worked on Goldwings but his dad made him take business courses that taught him proper business practices and procedures to go along with the mechanical and engineering training. So after finishing with the stunt riding career he and Wendy moved to the Collingwood area, fell in love with it and opened a small leather shop when he experienced a setback brought on by some severe medical issues. With full support from Wendy he put his resolve into getting better and getting his life back on track and decided to do what he liked to do best, work on motorcycles and opened a shop, earned the trust and respect from the local motorcycle community and built a strong and loyal customer base that grew steadily and evolved into the shop they have today. To Paul and Wendy this is more than just a place to do business but feel that they are part of the community and absolutely love Collingwood and its citizens and it seems that the feeling is mutual. They involve themselves in community events and support local charity while also running several successful charity events of their own in support of The Wounded Warriors that is dear to their hearts. This is all from the main showroom but rest of the store is equally impressive and there are accessories, memorabilia, artwork, crafts, collectables, leather goods, boots, shoes, books, helmets, gloves and everything and anything that you could need on display downstairs and upstairs and they are soon going to be expanding into the next door units. They can get custom leatherwork done and order in anything the customer could want if it wasn’t in stock. That is just the store, the fully equipped, organized and equally clean shop area where ace mechanic Reg Clarke works his magic along with apprentice Haydon Westgate and do solid reliable work on anything but they don’t have the car mentality that is prevalent in many other shops where they just replace what broke rather than assess why it broke and see if they can’t improve it so that it won’t break again. Reg, like many old school mechanics has a special toolbox full of improvised tools

let us find or create a bike that is as unique as you! book your spring oil and filter now - we buy used harley`s 10114 HWY 26 & elliott ave., collingwood, on 705-443-8751 www.thurst-ts.ca

specially made to perform a specific task on a specific type of motorcycle and knows how to use them as many bikes had specific quirks and idiosyncrasies that baffle newer mechanics not because they aren’t skilled mechanics but just aren’t familiar with those old quirky bikes. They can do just about anything but if they can’t they will recommend someone who can. Paul isn’t a fan of catalogue customising and just bolting on chrome when custom building a bike and encourages his customers to think outside the box and do something really unique that will truly personalize the bike and make it a true extension of the rider. Sometimes it is the attention to little details and the little things that sets a bike apart from one that is just a copy of what everybody else is doing. Individuality is what Paul strives for and Paul knows a thing or two about individuality, charting his own course and putting his own stamp on things. Paul and Wendy are great people. Full of life and a treat to be around and their shop is a reflection of themselves. Stop in and see them sometime and tell them Critter sent you.

Shenanigans

ROLLIN, ROLLIN, ROLLIN... Spring has finally arrived, the snow is melting, the birds are singing, the sun is shining, all is well. Although it still may be a bit too early to safely get on your bikes and ride, the anticipation is killing most of us, with our itchy throttle hand, the clench and release of our clutch hand, and the toe knuckle cracking of make believe gear shifting. This last insufferable winter we just made it through, should serve as a reminder, to “make hay while the sun shines” as they say. If motorcycles are going to be a part of your lifestyle, and something that you love doing, then have no fear to hold you back, use no excuses to justify your inability, and enjoy every moment of it, because it is a passion. Go where you want to go, see what you want to see, and feel what you want to feel, MAKE THE CHOICE!

If you like to ride with others for companionship and safety, grab a few girl friends or buddies, maybe join a riding group, and “get the hell out of Dodge” for a few hours, to a Bike Night, a weekend trip to a charity ride or attraction, or a week away out of province or country, it’s all about the ride, TAKE A CHANCE!

Talk to strangers, you have nothing to lose by breaking the ice, give a nod, tip a drink, just say “Hi” and maybe introduce yourself. I’m not saying that you have to tell them your life story, but you don’t have to be anti-social either. Regardless of make or model (remember, we all started somewhere), see the biker not the bike, chit chat about the weather, destinations, how many km’s so far, offer to ride together in the same mutual direction, and you may find that you have more in common than you think, SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY! Motorcycles are our common ground, a 2 or 3 wheeled tribe, of helmet wearing joy seekers, and like the machines that we ride, there is no reverse, only ever moving forward. by Donny Steppenwolf, The Way it Was : Elvis, Bronson and Easyriders Petersen Elvis Presley

In the early nineteen-fifties, Hollywood actors could only ride the Sportster predecessor, 750cc Harley K-models and still maintain insurance. The reason is that the 1952 to 1956 K-Flathead models were so slow! In another brilliant marketing move, the Motor Company publishes a picture of Elvis Presley sitting astride a 1956 KH Harley-Davidson on the cover of the May 1956 Enthusiast. Elvis, an avid devotee owned and rode many Harley-Davidson’s over his career.

Elvis’s many motorcycles afforded him a choice of what to ride. One of his favorites was a Panhead dresser but he also had a Honda Dream and a Triumph. However, his favorite was called the “Harley Dessert”. Elvis was fascinated with law enforcement and thus gravitated towards the police-type HarleyDavidson’s. Steppenwolf

The counterculture band, Steppenwolf was also responsible for the all time great biker hit Born to be Wild in 1968, (“looking for adventure and whatever comes my way”).

Donny’s Blasts from the Past

When I was around 15-years old, we went to dances in a local church basement in Toronto to hear many bands of the day including John Kay and The Sparrow. This band went on to play in the transitional Beatnik coffee houses to hippie hangouts, communes, and flophouses on a street called Yorkville in downtown Toronto. Think Haight-Ashbury and you have the picture. Today, fifty years later, Yorkville is upscale and one of the wealthiest and commercially most expensive streets in the city. Sure, currently rich urban bikers, with their very safe walks on the wild side, ride their sanitary Harley’s along Yorkville amongst the Ferraris and Lamborghini’s. They replace the greasy longhaired motorcycle club members on their chopped Hawgs of the hippie era. I gravitated from a street gang milieu into the hippie lifestyle and its peace, love and groovy philosophy. I took my motorcycle along for the ride. One day, a gang of greasers surrounded me to administer the brutal mandatory haircut of the day. I was able to fend them off for a short while as I made attempt after attempt to turn the other cheek. Peace and love were failing miserably at resolving my problem. That day I became a biker as I fought them off. I kept my hair with the realization that peace is only possible with a big fist. We heard John Kay and The Sparrow split from Yorkville in a beat up old station wagon for California. No one thought the car would make it. The rest is history as The Sparrow emerged as Steppenwolf a short time later.

Then Came Bronson was a great TV show that splayed the biker lifestyle of freedom and individuality into every living room in America. Tell me that this iconic show didn’t feed the burgeoning biker lifestyle movement? Bronson, the cool good guy contrasted greatly with the plethora of biker movies (Wild Angels, Born Losers, Hells Angels on Wheels etcetera) shown in movie theatres. The difference is the movies preached to the choir. Bronson drew in the unconverted.

Donny’s Blasts from the Past

I was riding with Sonny through the Mojave Desert about 13 years ago. We stopped on the side of the highway. There was a sun bleached white wood, decrepit motel in the middle of nowhere across the highway. Tumbleweed rolled by in a light desert breeze. The one story, row structure leaned on an angle that was sure to collapse. “Ever see that movie we made in 69,” he asked rhetorically. “Good old guy owns that motel. If you didn’t want to sleep last night, I was planning on us staying here.” What a fucking guy, Mr Energy! We rode from Oakland, leaving at 9am in the morning at a steady 80 mph to 3am the previous night. His quiet, raspy voice continued, “We filmed the movie out here. We stayed at this place for about a month. They bought us as many kegs of beer as we wanted.” Befitting the surrealistic, we rode off into a sand storm. I was learning the hard way, another reason he uses a full face helmet.

“Yeah.” “Where to?” “Oh, I dunno. Wherever I wind up, I guess.” Easyriders: The Magazine “Boy, I wish I was you.” Easyriders publishes its initial Bronson replies as he pulls away, “Well, hang magazine for June, 1971. It is an in there.” instant success capitalizing on the first

chopper craze. The Easyriders formula catapulted it to the status of the world’s largest motorcycle magazine by mixing cool choppers, fictional biker tales, cartoons, tech advice, and scantily clad hippie and biker chicks. It was a pinnacle of success for me to be featured numerous times in this iconic chronicler of the lifestyle.

Mask: 1985

Mask a film by Peter Bogdanovich starring Cher as Rusty becomes a

hit. Her sick son Rocky dreams of riding across Europe on a Shovelhead with a suicide shift. Rusty hangs with the Turks MC. The motorcycle club (gang) members are real people who have compassion. This is the first realistic representation of a bike club.

Easyriders: The Movie

George Hansen (Jack Nicholson) wonders what has happened to

America. “Billy, the locals are not afraid of you but are afraid of what you and Wyatt (Peter Fonda) represent.” Billy (Dennis Hopper) responds through a haze of marijuana smoke, “ Hey man, all we represent to them is someone needing a haircut.” “No Billy, what you represent to them is freedom.” “What’s wrong with that?” “Nothing, Billy; but talking about it and being it are two different things. Its real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace. Billy, don’t ever tell anybody they aren’t free because they are going to get real busy killing and maiming to prove to you that they are. If they see a free individual, its gonna scare them. It makes’em dangerous.” Later that night a cowardly attack by the local red necks with axe handles beats the sleeping boys, killing their lifestyle traitor, George. The 1969 Easyriders movie, a separate entity and not connected to the magazine. However, some believe the magazine title is taken from this iconic movie. The opening scene shows Billy (Dennis Hopper) and Wyatt (Peter Fonda’s Captain America) doing a drug deal to finance their cross-country ride in search of America. Steppenwolf’s resounding God Damn the Pusher Man (“God damn, God damn The Pusher man. You know the dealer, the dealer is a man with the love grass in his hand. Oh, but the pusher is a monster. The pusher don’t care whether you live or die”) overwhelms the striking visuals of evil Capitalism. It is a wonderful movie that explores a time in America on so many levels. I am happy that I lived through this era riding my radical chopper. Reportedly, two Panhead choppers were built from surplus police bikes for Peter Fonda’s character Wyatt, one for traveling and long shots and the other for close-ups (hero bike). The gas tank’s American flag theme epitomized the overriding and layered themes of this classic movie with 13red and white stripes and twenty-five white stars on a blue background. After movie completion, the hero version was stolen from storage. Of course, the traveling version was destroyed in the movie’s final scenes. Captain America was killed for being free by a freedom loving redneck protecting the American way. Wyatt was the sensitive, intellectual biker exploring Americana. It’s a tough role. I’m not sure anyone could pull it off completely. Dennis Hopper as Billy was another story. Wyatt paled with the coolness of Billy. I don’t know if Dennis Hopper was a great actor or he was just playing himself. Jack Nicholson, also had one of his great roles as the perfect foil for Wyatt ’s deep thoughts and Billy’s realistic, wacky dope conversations. The movie created a whole new wave of motorcyclists particularly of the outlaw genre. Bikers loved Billy as they did Lee Marvin in the Wild One. I couldn’t

identify much with the Wild One but I watched Easyriders with everyone doing LSWas (nickname for LSD) and psylocybin. I immediately knew what I was doing for the rest of my life. We were all rebellious but our counterculture seeds were well fertilized watching the final scene with mind enhancing brilliance. We were against all things establishment after walking out of the theatre.

Well as I am writing this column I am also getting very weary from all the weather networks Join us for the: informing us about how this has been one of the 7th Annual coldest winters on record ever and the only positive spin I can put on it is that we are lucky we didn’t have to dig ourselves out of all the snow that our brothers and sisters down in the Maritimes Rendezvous: got hammered with. Around the time you June 7th, 2015 are reading this article many of our friends will 1300 hours (1pm) returning from down Canadian Aviation and be south after enjoying having participated in Space Museum Bike Week and annoying 11 Aviation Parkway, Ottawa many of us who had to remain behind with all their continual posting pics of them grinning while parked outside some biker bar or standing in front of some landmark with their bikes… wearing t-shirts . I always like to think there is a special place in hell waiting for them. Hey! Just kidding! For those of us who remained behind to hold down the fort there are always the many indoor motorcycle shows and swap meets where we all brave the snow and frigid conditions to keep the dream alive until Spring and aside from the Ottawa International Motorcycle Show which I covered for all of you in the March issue of the Mag, another event here in the east that was well attended was the 2nd Annual Greely Swap Meet. One thing that doesn’t have a strong tradition in the eastern townships are swap meets and last year three

tales from the Far East.... of Ontario that is!

members of the Ottawa area community decided to take a shot at remedying that. So they rented space at the Greely Legion Hall which is in the rural Ottawa region and they gave it a shot. Now I was previously tied up on that particular day but the “lovely” Bette with the assistance of Brother Chuckay were kind enough to set up a table and hand out to everyone who dropped by a copy of the Mag while outside the weather maintained its tradition. It was not only cold and snowy but also accompanied by strong winds. When Bette came back later in the day she had a good time with lots of our friends dropping by and her take on the swap meet was that it was a success with the public and the vendors and went off with very few hiccups. This year she wanted to take part of the 2nd annual and so Wrench and I made plans to head down to the 34th Annual Syracuse Super Swap Meet in New York State on the Saturday and then take in Greely on Sunday. They say you find out a tree’s age by counting the rings inside it when you cut it down but for me I begin to realize how much life I have lived by seeing the number in front of the Annual for a motorcycle event. I remember attending the 1st Annual Syracuse Swap Meet back 34 years ago and it still remains one of my favorites although some years, like this one, those Buffalo snowstorms hit the I-81 with a vengeance. On the Friday before the show there was a 51 vehicle pile-up just north of Syracuse with many of those vehicles being tractor trailers and you are reminded that it only takes one serious blast of blowing snow to create a white-out. Luckily no one was killed in the accident but the I-81 was closed for the rest of the day. When we arrived early Sunday morning at the Legion Hall

there were lots of trucks and vans already there and an endless line of people carrying in things. At the same time there were people out in the lot offering to help others bring in their stuff and reminding me of one more reason I hold the opinion that bikers are a cut above the general public. Just Saying!.Now I have been in the Greely Legion hall for a few events mostly wedding receptions and as a matter of fact the last time I set foot in it was when one of our brothers had some of his reception held there after he and his lady were married outside on our property. That was a great wedding, but I had never seen the hall were the swap meet was held and it is not a bad size for an event like this so as soon as we were set up I snuck away to case the joint as they say. One of the first people I ran into was a decades old friend, Don Flinn who many of the eastern Ontario riders will remember was the founder of the Pike Falls Classic that was held up in Lanark near Perth. It was a must attend for many riders. Don decided to step down from running the Classic because as many of us have found out it takes up an awful lot of a person’s personal time and effort to put a successful event on. While the Classic’s demise left a hole in our area’s event calendar we thank Don for the years of great times and memories he gave us. Next up on the stroll brought me to the table of B.A. Machine Performance Cycles where I was cheerfully greeted by the ‘lovely’ Peri Poirier and her hubby, Tim and after a short but enjoyable chat with Peri I headed up the aisle where I met up with Roger Levert who informed me that there is a swap meet being held over in Gatineau Que at the Royal Canadian Legion at 231 Maloney Blvd West on March 21st with tables and admission costing $5. Also situated in the same aisle of tables I came upon one of my best friends and brothers, Doug Taylor aka Mr. Harley Davidson who besides having the usual table filled with a great selection of Harley parts and accessories a further

bonus was the presence of his son James who is home for a couple of months and helping Doug out. For most riders in the Ottawa area we have become quite used to see the father/son team at motorcycle events.

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 33

My next stop along the way was the table manned by some of the Simple Men MC which included two of my favorites scoundrels ever, Sean Guest & Duane Chevalier who are like the tag team of funny when they get together, anyhow the SMMC are good friends of TCB and Dyno Machine Shop they informed us that on Welding Flowbench March 21st at the Cobden the SMMC will be Performance Parts Legion hosting a benefit dance Precision Rebuilds for a family. Tickets can be COME SEE OUR purchased from members NEW LOCATION of the club. Sadly many NOW OPEN! of the TCB will be at the Toronto Motorcycle Show 7174 Bank Street, Metcalfe, ON K0A 2P0 that weekend but I urge all in the Ottawa Valley (613) 821-9090 riders to consider supporting this Tim & Peri event and supporting SMMC www.bamachine.ca events. By this time the hall of the legion was filling up and some other great folks I bumped into were Shelley Boisvenue who came up from Cornwall and also up from that same area was Bill Amell who is the creator of B.A.K Original Mobile Memorials, a small memorial urn that you can attach to the handlebars of your motorcycle and in it carry some of the ashes of a loved one or cherished pet so that they ride with you wherever you go and for those of you who remember Garth the Wonder Doberman who was not only my constant companion but my service dog. Bill’s device will allow Garth to continue to accompany me in the future. A bit further along the way I bumped into was Hillbilly from the Capital City Bikers Church who as always reminded me to remind all of you of the ever popular CCBC Swap Meet at the church on May 2nd. I consider that event to be the signal the Spring Riding Season has arrived. Had a chat with Don Bleeker and Big G from the Solders for

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 34

Jesus MC and then bumped into Kerry Anderson and convinced his lovely lady to pose in a picture with me before I kept making the rounds. Bumped into Merlin and not long after that Fonzy Ladouceur and the list goes on and on. One last thing I have to mention about the meet was the large amount of actual swap that was there because often while winter events like this are as good an excuse as any to get out and hook up with old friends this one did amazingly well at having lots of parts and accessories on the tables for sale. When we were packing up to leave the swap meet the weather was just as ugly as it had been when we arrived early in the morning but in all fairness I have to tell you that there were smiles on all the faces including those who had to make multiple trips to bring whatever was left out to their trucks. Kudos to James – Al – Grant who were the organizers of the Greely Swap Meet and we look forward to next year’s 3rd Annual.

I had an opportunity to tour the expanding area of B.A. Machine Performance Cycles facility and to see the new Dyno testing area as well as their showroom . With all the changes and additions that Peri and Tim are bring to the Ottawa area more and more riders will be able to customize, improve and add to the power and performance of their motorcycles. In case you were not aware of it, B.A Machine is now authorized to do extended warranty work on Harley Davidsons which is another bonus for area riders. Later in the Spring B.A. Machine will be having an “Official” Open House and hopefully The Celtic Brotherhood will be providing a free breakfast to people who stop by. TCB may also be putting on a demonstration of their Busted Bucket Challenge to promote awareness to the public regarding brain injury and concussion so keep checking with The Riders Mag as to when and where events like this will be

taking place. Last thing I would like to mention which I first brought to your attention in the last issue is the charity event that Dan Allastson, owner of the New Moon Tattoo studios and Shawn Dawson, owner

of Fatboys Country Smokehouse are involved in. They both along with about 20 others will be going to Nepal to scale part of Mount Everest and each person taking part is collecting for a particular charity, Dan’s being the Ride for Dad. He will be climbing to what they call the Base Camp which is about 17,000 feet above sea level and we here at the Riders Mag support both Dan’s & Shawn’s participation in doing this for charity. A reminder to Ottawa and area riders that on March 28th at both New Moon locations the net profits from all tattoos done on that day will be added to Dan’s charity sponsorship so do your best to take part if you can and also at both locations there are raffle tickets for various prizes you can purchase to participate in not only Dan’s climb but to show your support for the Ride for Dad. Well I guess that will be all for now and I hope to see many of you when you drop by The Riders Mag booth at the Toronto Spring Motorcycle Show at the International Center March 21st and 22nd and say Hi! As always I want to remind you that if you are an event –ride or a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertise or carry “The Riders Mag” ..Please contact me by email or phone. Hello fellow inmates...

by Dangerous Donnie from Durham

When I left the 9-5 grind it never occurred to me that I would slow down that much and finally learn not to sweat the little things, ain’t nothing wrong with that, so when people ask me how it’s going, my comment is “Every day is Saturday, no work and all play” (well at least till my pogey runs out…sniff!). Sometimes reality kicks in and it’s not easy to call it a Saturday when it’s really just a dreary snowy Tuesday in March, so I should start writing my goofy stories, or miss the dead-line like last month.

So for those of us trapped in last throes of winter, could spring just be around the corner? I know March and April can fool you, I have seen snow on an Easter weekend in the past. These last few months seem to go on forever till you fire up your ole Milwaukee Vibrator and roll that beast out of the garage. Ok enough of the weather bullshit…boring. So what did I do over the last few months to report on?.. Well the Big One was our Rangers MC 9th Anniversary Party, where according to my amigo Laszlo the head count exceeded 450. This event is always well attended, kind of the Academy Awards of Scooter Trash bashes. There is no point telling you who attended because EVERYBODY did ! The club breaks their cajones putting this party together, the feeding and watering of almost 500 Over 20 yrs of Award Winning Custom Bike Seats Pans~Shaping Engraving~Studs

people, live music, door prizes, meet and greet with all, set up & tear down, and clean up. It took more than 20 of us plus some friends to put this on, Viktor (RMC Pres) insists on only the very best food served (also a must is the annual huge pot of Goulash that he cooks himself the day of). If you missed this year’s party make sure you plan on attending next years (btw special thanks to my friends from the Hammer the Steel Town Cripplers 30 of them attended). Yes I went to Dover for Feb. Friday Feb 13th. Why you ask? Well again I have lots of time on my hands plus friends in the same situation. So we piled into the F150 (brrrr….when we left it was -20c), since my friends are hardcore tough guys and not wanting to ride there on two wheels, I suggested my companions wear full leathers and helmets and ride in the back pick-up bed, surprisingly none of them went for this concept, being the geezer pussies they are. With a noon arrival we found a spot to park and for shitz and giggles took a frigid stroll down Main Street and then hurried back to Angelo’s for a beverage or three. Somehow I missed running into the jovial one, Critter, but did bump into JR, some ABATE ladies, my old friend Hammer in his new colours, Pastor Ken from Bikers Church Hamilton, Dok from QMC and his new bride, plus the usual “thong man” outside in his full costume and I spoke briefly to the Hardy 81 guys selling their support gear in the frigid temps. Soon it was time to roll home, which I hate doing on the 13th. Dover to Durham is always a crappy ride back, traffic got bad so I took the 407. %#*@!?%%$ !! would you believe now is 35 frkn dollars? I love (good) live music and have been playing in bands since Christ was a cowboy, so I decided to put on a Blues Nite at our CH, in cahoots with our friends from the Schwa (Adam, Paul and the crew helped make it a sell out and an amazing nite). Totally packed the place! Our Pres Nick has a heavenly location for Italian food in Barrie who nail it every single time, and all we need do is heat the stuff up and serve. With my contacts in the music biz I got James Anthony (USA BLUE HALL OF FAME member) on guitar and Lil Joe Pinto playing vintage Chicago style harp. Again I prefer live music but I refuse to listen to hackers playing shit that’s weak and too loud. These two guys

dazzled everybody in the joint, just right for our 100 guests. If you need music at the right price and right sound contact me (email: sonoffatboy49@yahoo.com for bookings). For a bigger sound James also plays in my band, The Memphis North All Stars, and I am playing at the Bad Ride and Paris Vintage Bike show this coming season as well various watering holes around GTA. Come up and say hello if you’re attending. Also another musician/rider/clubber many of you may know is our friend John B (aka Fogger). His boys in Zed Head have been the go to band at many motorcycle riff raff parties. He is in demand in Fla. and Texas for a lot biker events. Zed Head have at least two full albums released, kind of a southern U.S. /Texas style ZZ top thing (well that’s how I describe it). Those of you that know Fogger may recognize him from that Outlaw Biker TV series where you can see him in many of the episodes in the back ground. He was hired on for new series, GANGLAND UNDERCOVER, I saw the first episode and he is in many scenes as member of the club. For those of you with a sharp eye, if you watch this show you will note he does not wear the patch of the club portrayed in this series (out of respect). I am happy for Fogger that he is getting work musically, and cool seeing him on the screen too (actually you will probably see some other familiar faces in those series that look the part from the GTA). I told Fogger I am ready to go if they need me, and will try to grow a beard like his…LOL. Also if you watch that local Biker TV show his original music is featured on many of the episodes. By the way what’s your best story of when you do something on your bike that you wished had never happened. We all drop them, it’s only a question of when, right? Coming back with the bride of Frankenstein from a wonderful week long road trip of carefree miles, we crossed the border on the 1000 Islands Bridge and my date says she needs a Timmy stop. So we hit Kingston off the 401 for the old coffee/smoke/bladder drain combo. Well we successfully accomplish all three, by that point I was pretty tired, as we had booted it all the way back from Old Forge NY. So on the final push home, out of the parking lot, some wanker sort cut me off and I hit the binders, put my right foot down and found the only pothole in parking lot. Over

the 01 Road King goes with the bride, plus the gear on the luggage rack. WHAM!...the wife cleared the fall and laid out on the parking lot. I had tried in vain to hold it up to no avail. So now I have a crowd looking on and I am rightly pissed ! I yank the fuk’r up and at exactly the same time my better half pulled from the other side, …and WHAM it flops right over on the other side. Both my concord purple hard bags were banged up (never did get them fixed). I tell you if there was a guy with trailer there I wudda gladly paid him 500bucks to haul the thing home, two smacks on pavement in less than 30 seconds. Can you spell “mortified !” Well I am running out of blarney so one of the upcoming things to watch for in Durham area, which I hope you will support, is BIKES ON BOND Aug 8th (rain date Aug 9th). They will close down the streets to cage traffic, so two wheels rule that day in Oshawa. Live bands, food, show and shine, vendors and it’s a FREE EVENT! Ride in and Hang out. Other than that this summer I think it’s time to cross the border some R & R (riding and riding) into VT/NH/PA (being so close), hang with friends, ride during the middle of the week and cover what I can for the Mag I’m informed by my friend Tamre that May 2nd is the International Ladies Day Ride. Critter and I may try to cover this event. Ride at the back to view their rear ends, I mean back of their bikes (just cause we’re old dogs on the porch don’t mean we can’t look eh?). And also if you attend the Bad Ride May 31st or the Paris Vintage Bike show I will be there with my Band providing proper beer drinking music. Until then…Drinking Triples, seeing Double and acting Single… So until then its Haste la Vista…which means? I don’t know I heard it a movie.

There’s a cute story floating around about three guys who wanted to sneak into the Olympic Village. I don’t know if they thought someone there might mistake them for athletes or if they just wanted to meet female gymnasts, but they kind of loitered around the screening table. Soon a big, hulking guy walked up with his athletic duffel bag, bulging biceps, size 19 neck, and said to the guards: “I’m Angus McPherson. Scotland. Shotput.” The security team looked in his bag, saw a huge shotput ball, and waved him right through. They gave him room keys and even meal coupons for the Pizza Hut and McDonalds at the food court. So these three guys said to themselves: “Cool. We can do this.” The first one sneaks outside, slices all the branches off a tree limb, comes back in and says to the guards: “Chuck Wagon. Canada. Javelin.” The guards inspect his “javelin” and hand him a bulging envelope with his athletic pass, room keys, meal ticket, everything. This was pretty lax security—probably pre-9/11. The second guy goes down an alley, pries loose a manhole cover, marches up to the front gate and announces himself: “Dusty Rhodes, Australia. Discus.” Welcome to the Olympics, Mr. Rhodes. So these two guys who have impostured themselves into the inner sanctum loiter around the gate to see if their third beer-drinking buddy can weasel his way in. A couple of minutes later, he walks up to the front gate with a huge roll of barbed wire painfully tucked under his arm. “Who are you?” the guards ask. “Foster Bean,” he says. “Vermont, USA. Fencing.” Uh, nice try, but not too convincing. How to often we want to hide our true being as we struggle as we rebel against God’s call on our lives. However, it is possible to choose whether one will vigorously fight the battle that wages against the flesh or not. The battle can be overwhelming, but it does not have to result in demoralizing defeat. One, among many, devastating strategies of Satan, which is fed by our own shame, is to fight, or rather retreat, in silence. From the very beginning, sin resulted in hiding and shame as Adam and Eve hid from one another by covering themselves

(cf. Genesis 3:7) and from the presence of the Lord in the garden by crouching among the trees (cf. Genesis 3:8). A similar type of “hiding” is also evidenced in the refusal to own the sin when confronted. What do Adam and Eve do when confronted? They blame-shift in order to direct the attention of the Lord away from themselves. They do not want to be “seen” in their sin so they justify it. The belief seems to be that, if the eyes of the Lord shift to the other and away from themselves, they can remain hidden. In either case the sin is avoided, hidden away, and not dealt with in an honest manner. Our natural tendency is to not deal with sin. Out of sight... out of mind... or is it? The beauty of the cross is that we are clearly judged to be “sinners” but given a new identity as “redeemed,” “children of God,” and “joint heirs with Jesus Christ.” We do not have to hide our sin or justify it because Jesus has paid the penalty for us, bringing us undeserved forgiveness. He “hides our sin” as far as the east is from the west, and he justifies us by his shed blood. However, until we reach heaven, we, the “redeemed,” wrestle with the realities of that old flesh. It does no good to be pretentious about our sin. It is useless to pretend that we are better than we are. I would rarely advocate “wearing” our sin “on our sleeve,” but it is futile to deny it or pretend it does not exist. What kind of life is this? We all know the experience to varying degrees. Hiding sin can drain us of our resources. It can “eat” at us. In a sense, we have no energies to invest in the lives of others for fear of being exposed or found out. Our energy is invested in covering up our sin, not in ministering to others. A good example of this is found when one chooses to speed while driving. It is difficult to sit back, put on an easy-listening CD, and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. One’s energies are spent being on the lookout for the next police officer, who might ruin his day with a ticket at a high price. He is seeking to hide his sin, to not be found out. However, if he drives the speed limit, then he can sit back and relax. Peace is not available in deception. In fact, unfortunately, we can find ourselves frantically falling deeper and deeper into sin. Being in this state of deception should be contrasted with the freedom that comes with openness. “I acknowledged my sin to you, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord;’ and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah (i.e., let this sink in). Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to you in a time when you may be found; surely in a flood of great waters they will not reach him. You are my hiding place; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with songs of deliverance.” The primary turning point for sinful humanity is to see with our eyes what the Lord sees with his eyes. We need to see our lives as he sees them. Hiding is simply an attempt to divert one’s and other’s attention away from what is true about self with the hopes that everything will be okay. King David’s life reminds us that it is not that simple. After seeing our sin as God sees it, we need to acknowledge it before him and ask for his forgiveness. King David’s prayer in Psalms 51:1-2 was “be gracious to me,” wash me thoroughly,” and “cleanse me” (see also Psalms 51:7-17). Pastor Dave davidneals@hotmail.com

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 39

Tinkerers Toy

This month’s feature guy is David, this sweet 1958 XLH is one of 711 that were manufactured that year and it is also Dave’s first Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. He says that he rode back in his native Winnipeg but moved to Toronto for work in his early 20’s and gave up riding at that time. He met and married his sweetheart Michele who is seen modeling on his sporty, she is an RN in Toronto and works straight nights. They were an active couple of what he described as average earners. They have a very nice house in an upscale (and overpriced) area of Toronto, once they had achieved their goal of home ownership they became active in Karate and

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 40

also Scuba Diving, but when they finally decided that it was time for a family Dave says there was no more time for Karate or Scuba. With Michele working nights at one of the big hospitals in the city David was working the night shift with his infant son, who these days is a teenager. David says that once he got the boy to the point where he just had to listen for the monitor at night he became bored describing himself as a tinkerer. He wanted something to tinker with but since their home in the city had no garage it had to be something fairly small and portable. He had ridden before and decided that what he really needed to while

away the hours in the evenings while his son slept was a motorcycle to work on. He had a friend who collected all manner of mechanical things and also had a place down in the New England area of the United States and had picked up a motorcycle which he had in a variety of pieces. When David mentioned his desire to have a motorcycle to tinker with his friend said I have just the thing for you. It was this 1958 XLH with some original parts and some swapped out parts from other models he put himself together this bike leaving the bottom end as is, but re-doing the top end replacing the entire wiring harness and adding a linkert carb. When he wanted his tins painted he went home to Winnipeg to pay his brother a visit whom he knew as a pretty fair painter along with many connections in the area. The tins where flown out to Winnipeg with him as luggage and taken to an aerospace plant in the area where they were stripped to bare metal in an acid dip. His nephew, who is said to be pretty proficient with the torches soldered, leaded and welded up any imperfections in the tins, mounting holes that were no longer required in the fuel tank and the rear fender amongst other things. The two tone paint which he says is an original 1958 paint scheme did not actually appear on the sportsters but rather on the big twins of the day. Although the colors are authen-

tic and he says that the front fender is not original to the sportster but came from a larger FL motorcycle. David the tinkerer says that he has owned his sportster for about 10 years now and has had it on the road for some time. He so enjoyed his time working on his old bike and getting it up and running that he decided that if another opportunity presented itself that he would take advantage of it saying that initially his wife was not that keen on riding but he got himself an old 80’s vintage Vespa and got that together and running so that Michele could learn to ride as well. She ended up loving the Vespa and eventually moving up to a 2004 sportster. Of course with Michele moving along into the modern age David needed to grab himself a more recent ride and he picked himself up a later model softail. When they have time together these days they go for a ride seldom choosing a destination just heading out and seeing where the road takes them although they do rides with their brother/sister in laws and Michele says that the sister in law also used that old Vespa to learn to ride and to obtain her driving license for motorcycles as well.

They participate in a couple of local rides each year on their late model rides and do pull the old sportster out for local ride in show and shines and also for special events. There was such an event the weekend that we shot his bike at his home last year which was called the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride and it is an international ride held in a number of countries simultaneously to raise money in the fight against prostate cancer. I had never heard of the ride before but he said it was a fun thing and it was the type that came with a sponsor sheet and he had enough sponsors that he could just enjoy the ride but he had found himself a cheap used tuxedo and he was planning to wear it for the ride. I hope the jacket didn’t have tails or that could end badly as you could imagine. A few years back David was having a casual conversation with one of his co workers at work about his love of restoring motorcycles and how he was always on the lookout for another bike to work on. A woman that he worked with said “Well I have a motorcycle in my garage that I bought with my late husband and he passed away twenty plus years ago”. So David picked himself up a 1976 Triumph Bonneville that the couple had bought together brand new and it had been sitting since the late 80’s. David says that the only problem with not having a garage at his place is that he needs to store all his bikes in a shed and their backyard is kinda like a ravine. Dave has a boat winch he uses to haul the bikes up the hill each spring. Hopefully Dave can get the bikes out sooner than later this year.

by That Northern Guy

As the warmer weather approaches and spring is around the corner, which seems to be further then the eye can see from my front door, plus the fact that we moved time forward to get that much closer to riding season, I can’t help but wonder what all the clubs, the enthusiasts, and the groups are doing right now? In North Ontario, we have assortment of bikers that enjoy their sport if not as much as life itself. Unfortunately, this time of year is filled with anxiety and impatience as most of the people have their rides ready to go, or the modification nearly complete, but the snow and ice out there just can’t melt fast enough. Just be safe if you venture off. Puddles of salty water and other winter debris not to mention the nonattentive cagers are very much present! I for one, have done my conversion from forward controls to floor boards successfully and rest assure it wasn’t without headaches. With the assistance of George and Dan from the local Harley dealer, who have an immense amount of patience to deal with my irritable individuality, I’ve picked up all the parts I’ve needed even if it meant going back day after day for weeks at a time. They even threatened to provide me a shirt complete with name tag and put me to work cause I was there as often. if not more, then some of the staff members. Rest assure guys, once riding season comes, I’ll be gone riding. Peace and quiet will come your way from my part. Now, I’m moving my attention to the lower fairings. I dropped them off at the paint shop, to match as close as possible the Emerald Green colour found on my 2013 Road Glide CVO Screaming Eagle. It’s a shame that Harley Davidson doesn’t release the paint codes of certain models, but on the other hand, it’s a blessing in disguise, as you don’t get any “riff raffs” painting all kinds of crap with your beautiful colour schemes. If you try hard enough you will get very close but not an exact match. Those of you that know me, will confirm that pulling a trailer behind the bike is something that I do in a regular basis. Not just any run of the mill trailer, but one in a shape of a Ford Mustang car. The next project will be to get this model painted to match the Glide so I can continue to attend the various bike shows like I’ve done in the past several years. A long time friend of mine had me hooked on bike and car shows

At the regular Saturday morning service, the rabbi announced that he was planning to leave for a larger congregation that would pay him more. There is a hush within the congregation. No one wants him to leave because he is so popular. Fred Silverstein, who owns several car dealerships in Newton and Brookline, stands up and proclaims “If the rabbi stays, I will provide him with a new Cadillac every year and his wife with a Honda mini-van to transport their children!” The congregation sighs in appreciation and applauds. Saul Cohen, a successful businessman and lawyer, stands and says, “If the rabbi will stay on here, I’ll personally double his salary and establish a foundation to guarantee a free college education for his children!”

More sighs and loud applause. Estelle Rubin, age 88, stands and announces with a smile, “If the rabbi stays, I will give him sex!” There is total silence. The rabbi, blushing, asks her: “Mrs. Rubin, you’re a wonderful and holy lady. Whatever possessed you to say that?” Estelle’s 90-year old husband, Abe, is now trying to hide, holding his forehead with the palm of his hand and shaking his head from side to side, while his wife replies: “Well, I just asked my husband how we could help, and he said, “Fuck him.” “Turtle” Should children witness childbirth? Good question. Here’s your answer: Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very dark so the paramedic asked Cathleen, a 3-yr old girl to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby... Very diligently, Cathleen did as she was asked. Heidi pushed and pushed, and after a little while, Connor was born. The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom. Connor began to cry. The paramedic then thanked Cathleen for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3-yr old what she thought about what she had just witnessed. Cathleen quickly responded, ‘He shouldn’t have crawled in there in the first place.....smack his ass again!’ Words to live by: 1. Accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue! 2. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. 3. Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it. 4. Drive carefully... It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker. 5. If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. 6. If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. 7. It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. 8. Never buy a car you can’t push. 9. Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on. 10. Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. 11. Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late. 12. The second mouse gets the cheese. 13. When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane. 14. Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. 15. Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once. 16. We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box. 17. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scen-

ery on a detour. 18. Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY 19. Save the earth..... It’s the only planet with chocolate!* Outside England ’s Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses. For 25 years, its parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant..... The fees for cars ($1.40), for buses (about $7). Then, one day, after 25 solid years of never missing a day of work, he just didn’t show up; so the zoo management called the city council and asked it to send them another parking agent. The council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the zoo’s own responsibility. The zoo advised the council that the attendant was a city employee. The city council responded that the lot attendant had never been on the city payroll. Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain , or France , or Italy , is a man who’d apparently had a ticket booth installed completely on his own and then had simply begun to show up every day, commencing to collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at about $560 per day -- for 25 years. Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over $7 million dollars ...... and no one even knows his name. A recent article in the Kentucky Post reported that a woman, one Anne Maynard, had attempted to sue St Luke’s Hospital, alleging that after her husband had surgery there he had lost all interest in sex. A hospital spokesman replied . “Mr. Maynard was admitted in Ophthalmology –- all we did was correct his eyesight.”

The old man said, they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything

Two buddies, Bill and Doug, were getting very drunk at a bar when suddenly Doug throws up all over himself. “Oh, no... Now my wife will kill me!” Bill says, “Don’t worry, pal. Just tuck a twenty in your shirt pocket and tell Angie that someone threw up on you and gave you twenty dollars for the dry cleaning bill.” So they stay for another couple of hours and get even drunker. 1,Hamilton Road,London, Ont. N6B-1M9 People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said ‘No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.’ Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked ‘What is it you are waiting for?’ She answered – ‘THE TEETH.’ A woman walks into the downtown welfare office, trailed by 15 kids. “WOW!” the social worker exclaims, “Are they all yours?” “Yep, they’re all mine,” the flustered momma sighs, having heard that question a thousand times before. She says, “Sit down Terry,” all the children rush to find seats. “Well,” says the social worker, “then you must be here to sign up. I’ll need all your children’s names.” “Well, to keep it simple, the boys are all named Terry and the girls are all named Terri” In disbelief, the case worker says, “Are you serious?

“ GOD IT’S BEEN A LONG WINTER !” “YOU EVER THINK A TURTLE WOULD MAKE A GOOD PET ?” They’re all named Terry?” Their momma replied, “Well, yes, it makes it easier. When it’s time to get them out of bed and ready for school, I yell, Terry! And when it’s time for dinner, I just yell Terry! And they all come a running, and if I need to stop the kid who’s running into the street, I just yell Terry and all of them stop. It’ the smartest idea I ever had, naming them all Terry.” The social thinks this over for a bit, wrinkles her forehead and says tentatively, “But what if you just want one kid to come and not the whole bunch?” “Then I call them by their last names.”

Job at the FBI The FBI had an opening for an assassin. After all the background checks, interviews and testing were done, there were 3 finalists; two men and a woman. For the final test, the FBI agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. ‘We must know that you will follow your Instructions no matter what the circumstances.Inside the room you will find your wife sitting in a chair .... Kill her!!’ The man said, ‘You can’t be serious. I could Never shoot my wife.’ The agent said, ‘Then you’re not Financing Avaliable the right man for this job. Take your Family Owned & Operated wife and go home.’ The second man was given the Since 1958 same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about 5 minutes. The man came out with tears in his eyes and said ‘I tried, But I can’t kill my wife.’ 519-825-4222
