Well, the way I see it, there is good news and bad news! The good news; we are having more warm days than cold ones and the days are getting longer! The bad news; the cold crap still lingers, as Winter refuses to just go away altogether! Recently we have seen snow, mixed with rain, ice mixed with rain and snow, sun showers, snow storms, thunderstorms and all kinds of other crap that isn’t at all, conducive to motorcycle riding! The term “Shit Show” does come to mind and Mother Nature appears to be either going through some major PMS or has simply switched to her “Beyond Bitch” setting on her mood chart! If she wore a mood ring it would probably look like a kaleidoscope or weird laser show! Anyhow, we must endure what we get and hope that it all comes together for the riding season that is sure to get here eventually! In the meantime, we hunker down and get our rides ready and do our best to contain our enthusiasm, however frustrating, the waiting period is! The Mag is doing well as we re-establish our delivery routes and get people used to the fact that we now have to charge $2.00 for a copy! Most are fine with it, some are not, and feel that because it was once free, it should remain that way! We have had guys come up to us at Shows and say they aren’t paying because they can pick it up for free at this place or another! This tells me that, at these shops where they are getting them from, they just ignore the donation box and simply steal their copy! The Mags are available in an open rack at all locations with a collection box attached and are placed there on the honour system! It works with the majority of people at the majority of places where the Mags are available, and I find the unattended collection boxes containing Loonies, Twonies and bills sitting waiting for me when I arrive with the new editions! So, this confirms my belief that, most people have honour and respect while some others do not! Some are appreciative of the hard work, time and expense that goes into publishing and distributing a Magazine such as this and want to see it survive, prosper and remain a part of the motorcycle community! Some do not! To those of you that do take the time to drop a Twonie into the box, thanks, you are helping to keep this Mag alive! To those who don’t, fuck you! Evidently, you have no honour or concept of the word Honour, no appreciation and if the Mag isn’t worth $2.00 to you, leave it there as it has no value to you! We remain incredibly busy as we try to get back on track, covering Swap Meets and events with the last of the Major Motorcycle Shows behind us for this year and are now looking at a calendar that is filling up at an amazing pace! Personally, I’m still coping with shoulder issues, stemming from the fall I had over four years ago, waiting for settlement from insurance Companies and so on! I’m limited to what physical work I can do, as anything above waist height is difficult, if not impossible! I’m scheduled to go in for surgery to correct a couple of other nagging The Rider’s Mag - Page 8
issues in early May and now life has put another large bump in the road for me to deal with, that has further delayed my travels out to parts of the Province! Weather, and life are the major set-backs! Please, be patient, we have had more than our share of challenges and set-backs but we are working on it! The aforementioned, “Newest Bump in the Road”, I discovered when I came into the house from the shop recently, to find “Godzilla”, my beloved wife, of 50 plus years sprawled on the floor in the hallway where she was having a major stroke! She was conscious and just wanted me to help her to the couch, but I assessed the situation and quickly called the ambulance! She was loaded up and taken to the Hospital in Richmond Hill! They administered a drug and then Godzilla, myself and a nurse from The Hospital were all loaded into the Ambulance and sped off to Sunnybrook Hospital where they immediately extracted a blood clot from her brain and operated again a few days later to remove another larger clot from an artery in her neck! She is now back in Newmarket at Southlake Hospital which is literally, right in my back yard! They are doing assessments on her and then we can see where we go from here! As I have said many times over the years; “Why just have a life, when you can have an adventure?” The adventure continues! This is shaping up to be an extraordinarily busy riding season, with all kinds of rides and events happening in all parts of the Country! I have been extremely lucky, as I have found and brought a couple more people on board to share the load currently being borne by myself, “The Beast”, Kris, and “Beautiful Barbie”. The former Editor of The Riders Mag JB has expressed interest in once again, being part of the Mag and contributing where and when she can so don’t be surprised to see her out and about! It is funny the way things work out and it usually involves nothing more than being in the right place at the right time! Perhaps it is saying your wishes out loud, (Like clicking the heels of your Ruby slippers and saying “I need a new girl! I need a new girl! I need a new girl!” and poof!) but I had just been saying to Kris how much I miss Chantel and how someone with her presence, enthusiasm and energy at events would be hard to replace! (No, I didn’t click the heels of my ruby slippers! I don’t even own a pair of ruby slippers but I found a pair on Amazon at a great price and as soon as I beef up my Visa card, I’m going to order them!) I then went out to deliver the newest Mags at the H-D dealership in Richmond Hill and was promptly set upon by a very attractive young lady and given a nice big hug! Now, I was struggling to figure out who she was and where I knew her from! She looked very familiar and I knew that I knew her, and my old brain was trying desperately to come up with something! I ran some calculations and whatever facial recognition system I was running (Time for an upgrade!) and took a shot! Her hair was different (But ladies do that all the time!)!
“Kim?” I asked meekly! I luckily hit the nail on the head but the Jig was up! She knew that it was just a lucky guess on my part and tried to let me off the hook! Truth be told, I’m old and getting more forgetful every day! I do know lots of people and a lot of people know me! Sometimes when I meet them out of the context of where I know them from, my mind does a disconnect and I end up just stammering like a fool! Now this is a pretty lady and as it turns out, she had previously, caught my attention at Johnny Sombrero’s funeral a while back, as she was pretty, had funky hair and a great look and presence about her! I approached her and she agreed to do a modelling gig for me a few years back for Eagle Eye Custom Cycle in Whitby! We talked a while and from our conversation, I managed to extract the following information! She is definitely pretty, is interested in photography, has her own cameras, is single with grown up children and no permanent relationship at this time! The clincher was that she would be interested in helping out with The Riders Mag, cheap! How could I ignore such an opportunity when it smacked me right in the face! I brought her with us to the recent Spring Motorcycle Show dressed her in some Riders Mag gear and sent her off! She shone even brighter! She wandered off with her cameras and filled memory cards with lots of great shots and then accompanied me on a tour of the Show! Look for her with me at many events, this riding season and say hi! I then met her again and we covered a story that I was interested in doing in beautiful, Ayr! She will represent The Riders Mag at various events and functions throughout the Province but specifically in the Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph areas! Now also on the weekend of the Spring Show, our man Alphie was invited to a boxing event that Harley G was putting on and he asked if I would mind him attending and representing The Riders Mag! I gave him the OK and forgot about it until he starts texting me stuff about some very attractive, multifaceted lady that he met at the boxing match! He said that among her many talents and interests, she was a writer and very involved with veterans suffering from PTSD among other afflictions and concerns! He gave her my number and when she contacted me, I set up an appointment for her which she did show up for but, unfortunately, her appointment conflicted with Godzilla’s unscheduled, stroke and ‘Zilla took priority and we had to reschedule for Dawn! When we finally did meet, it didn’t take me long recognize her potential and to give her a shot and we will all see what comes of it! She has submitted her first piece that will run in this issue of The Mag! She is very pretty and very personable, she should be an excellent fit for The Riders Mag Crew and I think you folks will like her! Her name is Dawn, she is from the Shwa and I think she will have an impact! Treat her nice! Anyhow, there is lots to look forward to this summer! Looking at what I have on my plate and what I intend to attend personally; We are scheduled to run the Show and Shine portion of an event at Policaro’s Harley-
Davidson in Oakville, May 4th 2019 in conjunction with the International Ladies Day Ride and in support of The Guardians of the Children! Come on out and join the fun! Prizes, trophies, food and all for a great cause! Don’t forget the World-Famous Fort Erie Swap Meet, May 5th, 2019! Promoter extraordinaire, Sean McCooey has had to step back due to health concerns, as he puts his heart and soul into this annual event that draws in bikers, bargain hunters and vendors from all over the Province and the United States! The Show, which is Sean’s Legacy is on and promises not to disappoint! Bro, Port Colborne has taken over the Show and are doing a bang up job of it, but remember, they are coming in on short notice! Strictly V Twin in the wilds of Pefferlaw is having a Swap Meet at their property on May 11th and promises to be a good one! at their property up in Bridgenorth on May 24th and you definitely don’t want to miss this one! The Rider’s Group will be getting their weekly Ride Nights in Blackstock every Tuesday night that will run from May 7th through to Oct. 2019, and in beautiful Belleville Wednesday evenings from May 8th to Oct. 2019 up and running so watch your Riders Mag for details! We hope to make it out to as many as time permits! Also, The Loretto Inn in beautiful downtown Loretto will be starting their “Biker Day” every second Sunday starting May 12th and continuing on until summer is gone! They will have special menus with special Biker Day prices, music, an outdoor barbecue and outdoor bar set up on the expanded patio, so if you are out for a ride, coming back from somewhere or looking for a great destination with great food and a great atmosphere! Check them out! This is a truly great bar that has turned things around 360 degrees from what it was when the new owner took it over! It now the new home of The Riders Mag Show and Shine the last Sunday in August! The Rideau Rendezvous sponsored by Pace Law is alive and well with all kinds of great stuff planned for this year as they are in this for the long run and want to create a truly great event that will be The Event for years to come! In addition, they are set to host the World Record Attempt for the largest all female burn-out this July 6th! This is an event that continues to grow in size and stature! Come on out! The Riders Mag will be there! Bobcaygeon Bikefest will be back bigger and better than ever and will take place June 23, 2019 rain or shine depending on Mother Natures mood at the time! Hogs for Hospice are determined to set new records for attendance again this year along with raising funds in support of their excellent charity! This event continues to grow and is a mainstay in the area for local riders and draws from all over the Country! I got to talking to a lovely lady looking to get support for a new Charity Ride that she is involved in that is near and dear to her heart! She turned to the Riders Mag to garner attention for that event! We do not do free listings but do offer discounts for Motorcycle Clubs and Charities! Once in a while when someone is able to do the impossible and penetrate my thick skin and melt my cold heart I will give them an extra boost! She caught me at a vulnerable moment and I agreed to give her a plug here in my column and I won’t renege and besides, anything to do with the military, kids, dogs and such are my vulnerable spots and I will do what I can to help, but PLEASE! Do not expect or ask for free! So here goes; The Bowmanville Navy League Branch is hosting their first annual “Deck Run” (poker run) called the “Iron Horse Deck Run.” It will be starting in Bowmanville and concluding in Tyrone. There will be 3 stops in between. Cash prize of for best hand. Raffle, and a BBQ. Live music. $20 per player (BBQ included). N.L.C.C Challenger Navy League Cadets is a non – profit organization for youth ages 9-12. Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Bowmanville are youth 12-18 yrs. Both programs teach our youth leadership skills, self strength, community involvement and the importance of. These organizations help cadet grow in their strengths and strengthen skills the cadets struggle with. They are taught important life skills (first aid, team building, communication, etc ) All this is done while exploring history and traditions of the Canadian Forces. The amazing Officers and Staff that help with these fantastic Corps are all volunteers. We encourage all to come out, have a great ride in the beautiful Clarington/ Kawartha areas, meet the incredible young gals and gents or our future. Twenty Years of The Riders Mag ……So far so good 20 years! Twenty Years! XX Years! Wow it doesn’t matter how you say it or spell it, it is still a milestone and we had to celebrate it! Big Daddy’s in Newmarket was the spot we chose to join anybody who wanted to come out, kick up our heels a bit and celebrate our managing to

survive this long! It hasn’t been an easy ride, particularly since I reluctantly took over at the Helm of The Riders Mag after the founders JR and JB decided they no longer wanted to run it! There were plenty of tense moments and we weathered many a storm and rough seas, and lots of other nasty stuff

along the way! There were plenty of times that things looked pretty bleak. I did not have JR’s bankroll or business acumen, I was just a truck driver/cartoonist with a passion for this damned magazine and my lack of business experience almost capsized us several times! We have changed some crew members along the way, although I can’t figure out why! You get to work long hours with little or no pay, no holidays or paid vacations, no benefits! What the Hell do you want from a job? Anyhow we have a new crew on board and there are enough hands to make even a sad old Captain like me look somewhat competent! We had a great turnout and we turned a Sunday afternoon into a grand time! Former Publisher JR even graced us with his presence and it was good to see him out looking fit especially after his health scare a while back! He and his lady Debbie seemed to be having a good time! Thanks to all who came out and thanks to Big Daddy’s for allowing us to party with you! The Peterborough Spring Swap Meet 2019 The weather sucked once again as Kris and I loaded or stuff up in The Black Bitch and slipped, slid and skidded through the glorious countryside that was far from a Winter Wonderland on our way to Peterborough where we set up our stuff and settled in for the day! I could tell right off that the weather had had an impact on this ever-popular event! I talked to organizer Larry Pooler, and was informed that some vendors had yet to show and suspected that it was weather related! Larry has been doing this a long time and has long ago come to terms with the fact that weather can throw a monkey wrench into motorcycle events really quick and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it other than to roll with the punches and hope you come out of it all still able to smile! Sometimes you leave smiling but you hope you can at least still, at least, grin when you look at the final numbers! All in all, it was still a good event! Attendance although down a bit, was still respectable! The weather cleared and some vendors did appear later than planned but they appeared as did the crowds of attendees in search of bargains! Steve and Morley from Recycled Gear in Lindsay were both there and while I did get to talk to Morley whenever I saw Steve he was in deep conversation so I figured I would find him again at some point where he wasn’t engrossed in conversation. It never happened! I found some good deals as I made my rounds! These events are as much for socializing as they are for parts hunting and there were lots of hands to shake and plenty of warm friendly hugs as I made my way around! It works out well for me having Kris along with me on these excursions as he looks after the booth and informs the inquisitive where he last saw me and lets them hunt me down! This event continues to get huge support from the Motorcycle community both locally and from far away! I recognized people from Windsor and Chatham, Ottawa Valley and other spots that involved some serious driving to get here! I did spot Bob and Carolyn Neveau of the National Motorcycle Show fame, wandering around together! I thought for a moment that I’d be able to report First hand, that the Motorcycle Show Bug had bitten them both simultaneously once again and that they were going to revive the once very popular Show and Swap meet that they ran for years out of various buildings at the CNE grounds in Toronto! Much to my chagrin, they informed me that that wasn’t the case! One of my favourite people, Mr. Hank was there with his collection of interesting stuff, rare finds and goodies that all bring feelings of nostalgia to anyone who sees it, and he even brought me some new Labatt’s 50 collectables to add to my collection! Swap Meet! I’ve seen guys, (In fact I are one.) who have driven through seven kinds of Hell to get to a Swap Meet for the outside chance of picking up a particular part! We did get to hang out and socialize quite a bit! It had to be very disheartening to organizer Josh, as he and his whole family come out to work all of his events and they put a lot of hard work and planning into them! There was a snack bar with some great deals on some totally awesome fare, like the sandwiches, fries and other good stuff! I wandered around and socialized and there were many there who shared my sentiments about Mother Nature and her vicious and wild mood swings! The day before there were some Motorcycles out enjoying the warmth and bright sunshine and wake up today to a blizzard! WTF? 2nd Gear Motorcycle Culture I would like to welcome 2nd Gear Motorcycle Culture to our happy little Riders Mag family of advertisers and supporters.
We made are way home in much better weather conditions than in which we arrived! Thanks! See you next year! Barrie Spring Swap Meet 2019 Spring? Did I actually say Spring? WTF? Judging from Mother Nature’s performance on this particular day, I would get a strong argument to the contrary about the actual existence of Spring! It wasn’t bad getting there but the weather forecasts were anything but favourable not just for Barrie and area but for miles around getting back was an entirely different story! I still found it somewhat strange to see the far less that staggering turnout of vendors and attendees for this The Rider’s Mag - Page 14
They came on board last month and were to get some Mags to sell in their store! However, some lunkhead, scatterbrained old fool who was out distributing Mags through that area and practically drove right past the door didn’t do his job! He doesn’t even have a valid excuse and I’d fire him but he owns the damned Magazine! So, to make amends, I made a special trip back to the beautiful little Town of Ayr! I stopped in Fergus on the way to pick up the lovely Kim and take her along as an introduction and initiation to working for the Riders Mag, 101, the first step to full-on the lofty, Roving Reporter status!
We found this very interesting store just over the tracks on the outskirts of town and away from the hustle and bustle Downtown Ayr. The outside is somewhat deceiving as to the amount and variety of the really great stuff that is contained therein! This store is amazing, as is the delightful lady who runs it! Carol Anne is a real treat to talk to and totally knowledgeable about motorcycles, motorcyclists and the motorcycle culture! She is a very energetic and enthusiastic lady as the flag hanging from the wall would suggest because she is proud of Newfoundland stock and upbringing! The shop isn’t cluttered as some 2nd hand shops tend to be! Everything is well organized and well displayed! She has created a great atmosphere where you feel comfortable browsing around and exploring the treasures and surprises contained therein! She sells a wide variety items with a blend of new merchandise and used (on Consignment) gear that ranges from leathers, boots, shirts, jackets, helmets and other motorcycling essentials like chaps, gloves and bandanas! Carol Anne is quite involved in the Motorcycle Community, especially with other lady riders and produced and sells a Real Ladies who Ride Calendar to promote and raise funds for a number of charities! 2nd Gear is going to start a ride night in conjunction and co operation with the fine Abe Erb (their middle name is beer) Craft Brewery/Restaurant that is directly across the road from 2nd Gear! I felt compelled to check it out on behalf of our fine readership and am happy to give this spot a 5-star rating as the food and the beer are fantastic and the service was excellent! See, we go to all ends for you folks! Always ready to take one for the team!) The first one is scheduled for Tuesday June 18th. Check them out! The 30th Annual Spring Motorcycle Show Wow! 30 years! That is certainly an accomplishment! I’ve seen this show grow and prosper since it’s inception
as it was part of a series of Shows that started with the Supershow in January, then there was The London Show, back to Toronto for The National Show and then The Spring Show back at the International Centre in April! There were at times a few other that sprang up like The Kitchener Motorcycle Show, The Windsor World of Motorcycles Expo, The Hamilton Show and another in Ottawa. That was just Ontario, as Quebec and the rest of the Country all had different events! Ontario was big enough for us and it certainly kept us busy! Now, time, poor economic climate and attrition has taken its toll and we are down to two! So, we were all ready for this one or as ready as I can ever hope to be, because we are always so busy that preparations for the Show are pretty much left to the last minute, because that is the nature of the Beast! True to form, we got it all done and really surprised ourselves at how smooth and how quickly we got things set up! Saturday, we were up and at ’em early, and had the remaining few tasks completed in good time before the doors opened! Our Crew consisted of myself, Kris, The Beast, Barbie, with L’il Red along with hubby Mike, Kim, David Barber (Our Niagara Representative!) and whomever else showed up to join us as the Show progressed. I also had my buddy Bryan Davis join us at the booth to help out once again! He is a big help and really enjoys the Shows, the atmosphere and running into friends he hadn’t seen for a while! Our girl Swap meet Sue or Stitch or whatever you prefer once again set up with us looking after our Swag along with her own stuff! Donny Petersen was once again with us, signing and selling his books, and he is a real draw for the booth! I was also supposed to have a crew from the group trying to make the amendment to the Highway traffic act that allows Sikh Riders to ride without a helmet applied equally to all riders in Ontario, at the booth but they were offered their own space by the show. I had held a table for them but, it is what it is! We helped them with their The Rider’s Mag - Page 15
that fast and am fairly recognizable! I took Kim around with me on photojournalist mode and introduced her around while she took a ton of pictures! Barbie disappeared from the booth, busying herself, helping to promote The All Female Burnout in Smithsfalls this Summer as one of the attractions at the Rideau Rendezvous sponsored by Pace Law, Motorcycle
petition just the same. With our current setup, with Kris, the Beast and the others looking after the Booth, I was able to wander throughout the Show freely and talk to a lot of our advertisers and readers with no pressure to stay at the booth! I run into most everybody who is looking for me on my travels anyhow as I don’t move all
Division! I once again made my recommendation for the Editor’s Awards (The Eddies) that the Spring Motorcycle Show presents at the Show. This is where Editors of various Motorcycle related Magazines and Websites get to submit names of people or groups that have done The Rider’s Mag - Page 16
something noteworthy for or within the Motorcycle Community! This year I was honoured to present the Award to The Guardians of the Children for the work they do with children who have suffered abusive or traumatic situations! It was great to see the number of members who took to the stage to receive the Award and to share their story with the audience! I was very pleased to see The Spring Motorcycle Show pay proper respect to people who have contributed so much to the Motorcycle Community over the years and recognize those contributions with an award in many cases, posthumously! Such was the case with Jon Burnham of Classy Chassis. I had the pleasure of presenting Jon with an Eddy Award last year in recognition of his charity work and all that he and his fine crew do and have done for the Motorcycling Community! Sadly, Jon died earlier this year after a short but
valiant battle with cancer! Today, his family was presented with the award recognizing all that he has done and what he meant to so many! He won’t be forgotten! Thanks to Bar and Peter for your recognition of lives well lived! Very Classy! It was a busy day and by the time evening rolled around, when the crowds dwindled to a trickle we packed up and made our way to the exits and headed for home1 Back at it, bright and early Sunday morning, we rolled in hooked up the trailer and found what might be an advantageous spot from which to make our escape at the end of it all! It was a slow start to the Show that morning, which is good, because it allowed me to take off with Kim and get some good shots of her on various bikes and then go on a mission to get uncluttered pictures of the bikes! There are a lot of motorcycles to be seen at this show! Sport bikes, cruisers, baggers, bobbers, antique bikes, classic bikes, custom choppers, barn finds, military bikes and any other type of bike you would want to mention, you will likely find it here! I look at some of the old beauties and my mind boggles at the thought of trying to source out original parts to complete a proper restoration and get an over 100-year-old to run! The patience, time and money that goes into one of them has to be astronomical! This is something that is not done on a whim, it is something that is done out of pure love of motorcycles! Speaking of Classic bikes, our Sport Bike aficionado and contributor David Rusk’ classic Honda was invited to set up on the Red Carpet which is quite an honour as it shows the respect and high regard that the bike is held in! Then there are the pro builders who compete for the big trophies and large cash prizes! Speed Trix and Steve Schuler to name but two of them but the time, imagination, skill and patience that goes into these builds is unimaginable! These bikes are judged on the slightest little detail and it is these little details that can be the difference between 1st, 2nd 3rd place or not making it to the podium! It is not what you did wrong but something a little extra that the other guy did! Rather than getting points for what you did, they subtract points for what you didn’t do!

The Spring Motorcycle Show is more than just motorcycles! There were lots of booths promoting all kinds of different rides and events, for different charities and causes throughout the Province! There are different Motorcycle clubs and Riders Clubs and associations all promoting themselves and events that they are putting on and hoping to get you to attend! The Rideau Rendezvous, ABATE Final Frontier event, The Kawartha Charity Riders, The Riders Group, The Blue tie ride, Ride for Dad, Deseries Ride, The Highway of Heroes Ride, Ride for Sight, and many other all vying for the attention of riders to support their events! There are clubs and organizations for every possible interest, Ladies Clubs, Firefighters Clubs, Police Clubs Sikh Riders Clubs, Sport Bike Riders Clubs, Touring Riders Clubs, Clubs for Gold Wing Riders, Clubs for Harley enthusiasts and just about any other make model or variety you can imagine! They are all here so if you want some information about any of The Rider’s Mag - Page 18
them, this is the place to get it! If you are bored here, you are not trying hard enough! I wandered around to visit with Len from Len’s Auto in beautiful Downtown Jarvis and check out the fine selection of Rewaco Trikes! The slow Spring has had an effect on their business as there aren’t as many days suitable for test rides and that can make a difference! We all hope the warmer weather will arrive
soon and we can get our bikes back on the road, our faces in the wind and our knees in the breeze! Fred Hale and the whole Hale Family were out with their huge array of parts and accessories and just down from there Chris, Mark and company from Hawg Worx were busy fielding questions from interested parties at their display! The Bike Lawyer, Timothy Leigh Bell is a fixture at these shows and I stopped to chat awhile with him and his daughter. Rocco from Authentic Cycle is always a treat to talk to although business was brisk and it was hard to carry on a long conversation! The day flew by and I was able to just watch the awards as I had both David Rusk and our new lady, Kim armed with cameras, light meters, flashes all ready to work! David had to take a break from his duties of photographer to prance to the stage to accept an award for his Honda! Then, damned if I didn’t win a first-place trophy with my trike and had people there ready to catch the action too! It was a good show and a successful one for us at the Mag. We must be getting really good at this show stuff because we were packed up, loaded up and headed for home in record time! The Rider’s Mag - Page 19
Hog Town I was shocked and saddened to hear that Hog Town Cycles in Lucan had burned to the ground! I was at the Spring Motorcycle Show when Stitch tried to show me a video of it but I was in the middle of a conversation and didn’t really pay attention to what she was showing me! I didn’t put it all together until later that day when I overheard a conversation about it and then it sunk in! I wanted to call Mike and Teresa but figured that they would have enough to deal with and that calls, no matter how well intentioned, might not be what they needed at that time! I just got off the phone with Teresa and she assured me that no one was hurt and all was well, or as well as could be expected and they are working out of their temporary shop at 33656 Denfield Rd., Lucan ON. for service items! As you can imagine, this was devastating to this fine couple who put their hearts and souls into this very successful business, but they are resilient and are now up and running? The building itself is a write off and they are not absolutely sure when they will rebuild at this time, because, as you can imagine, the list of things to do is mind boggling! They have been able to nail down the cause of the fire though! An electrical wall outlet that had been properly installed and was not overloaded appears to be the culprit! Security Surveillance Cameras from two different vantage points captured the start of the destruction! This video at least put their minds at ease as to the immanent question that we would all ask ourselves in this kind of situation, “Was it something we did to cause this and could we have prevented it?” The answer to both questions is no, but you still ask and you still wonder! Bacon Fest will go on as scheduled, as it is something that Mike and Teresa started but has taken on a life of its own and is now also a Town event! You can rest assured that Mike and Teresa will be there and involved as they always have been! We at The Riders Mag wish them well! We offer our heartfelt condolences and whatever support we can! Ontario Confederation of Clubs This is a two-part article as there were two separate events! On a personal level, I have been involved with the OCC for a lot of years now and I firmly believe that the Organization is vital to the motorcycle community in general and motorcycle riders and Motorcycle Clubs in particular!
We all hear almost daily about the rights of this group or that group that are being disregarded or disrespected by various Law enforcement Agencies, Political figures, authorities, and departments of government and see and hear the outrage as organized groups of protesters as they march on City Hall, Queens park, Parliament Hill, Police Stations, embassies and so on! They demand that changes are made and that their fundamental rights to freedom of assembly, freedom of Speech and freedom of religion be recognized, respected and protected! They demand that the laws are applied equally and fairly without prejudice to all Canadian Citizens! These basic rights and freedoms are being eroded on a daily basis as new laws are enacted to increase the power of groups like Law Enforcement Agencies to give them more control over ordinary Citizens and we must do all we can to retain our individual rights while we still can! There is day to day examples of abuse of Bikers Rights and Freedoms that largely go ignored as we are far from vocal about it! Marching on various are just not our style! However, we have to fight back and fight back soon or we will be stripped of these rights permanently and we will have nobody to blame but ourselves! The Law states that you can’t promote hate or fear of any identifiable group or religion yet Bikers are considered to be fair game by Law Enforcement agencies! Bikers are constantly being harassed and branded as Criminals by Law Enforcement, even those with no record of criminal activity whatsoever, let alone convictions! You say that you are not a Criminal and that you are not a patch wearing “Gang Member” so you have nothing to fear from Law Enforcement, that is according to Law Enforcement! These laws are discriminatory and in contravention of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and they will eventually affect us all! This isn’t about actual Law Enforcement for the protection of Society it is about increasing their power and reducing the rights of the citizens of this Country and your ability to fight back! It is about making their jobs easier at the expense of the regular citizen! There are now Laws in effect wherein you are now guilty until you can prove otherwise rather than you are innocent until they can prove otherwise! This can be done “On the spot simply on the word of a police officer!” Your sentences and punishments begin right then and there is nothing that your supposed legal rights as a citizen can do to prevent it! Law Enforcement is telling us that they don’t abuse their authority yet everyday we see examples to the contrary! They are quick to point out that you shouldn’t paint all Police with the same brush and that the majority of Police Officers are good! But all the bad stuff comes out on a regular basis! Yet they feel absolutely intitled to malign all Bikers as criminals! They even go so far as to say money and support that Biker Clubs raise for charities is tainted and the proceeds of Crime and advise charities not to accept donations from Motorcycle Clubs, yet they have no evidence to substantiate such claims! These are just a couple of examples of what goes on and why groups and organizations like the OCC are necessary and why we should all support them!
These men and women are volunteers and work hard on behalf of all riders in regards to things that affect us and our rights as riders and citizens of this Country! They put a lot of time and effort into research and lobbying for changes in laws and fair and just treatment for riders! In the United States, similar organizations whose membership is made up from different Motorcycle Clubs and independent riders who put their individual issues and prejudices aside to work together for the betterment of all! They have strong political voices that are heard and they evoke changes to laws and stand against injustices, unfair legislation and ill-conceived laws that affect riders in their Country! This is the goal here in Canada as well! The OCC is the Ontario organization but similar organizations exist or are being formulated across the Country and we may see a National coalition in the not too distant future that will unite us all and challenge laws and such on a Countrywide level! The Annual OCC Convention I was somewhat surprised when I was asked to speak at the Convention but agreed to do so! I took Kris and Barbie with me and we wheeled into St
Catherines with time to spare! The place was packed with delegates and participant even though many couldn’t make it due to a funeral! Chairman, Ray started things off and gave an overview of the days itinerary! He explained that Donny Petersen had been scheduled to speak but he had to attend the funeral of one of his Club Brothers! There were some excellent speakers who addressed workplace injuries and your rights and entitlements under The Rider’s Mag - Page 21
the luncheon was to take place! Finding it, we were briefed by the Mayor of Dutton Bob Purcell who is retiring from his spot on the executive of the OCC but was still large and in charge on this day! The rooms that we would be occupying are part of The Governor General’s official reception area and very impressive! There were many paintings and displays of artifacts of Canada’s Indigenous Peoples throughout the rooms and I was glad we had arrived early so that we could take it all in! The idea behind this informal luncheon was to allow our elected officials and their staff the opportunity to meet and mingle over a lunch buffet with members of the Motorcycle Community and various Motorcycle Clubs! We could then explain our issues and concerns on many topics, such as; Handle bar heights, Motorcycles being the laws and provisions of various Government agencies. We had a great lunch and I took my spot at the podium and did my best to answer any questions! There were many! I’m not much of a prepared speech kind of guy so I just winged it! I pledged to put the full support of the Riders Mag behind the OCC and asked if someone could carry on with a regular column on Bikers Rights and what was going on in regards to the OCC. Rooster had been doing such a great job for years and his retirement left a void! My motion that a crew be sent to Prince Edward County where Rooster now lives a life of leisure, and we Shanghai the old guy, tie him to a chair in front of a computer and put the lazy old fart back to work, was quickly quashed although I did sense some element of support from the crowd! A gentleman from The Royal City Riders who suffered a grievous accident in which he lost a leg, shared in the experience and knowledge that he had gained from the incident! It was very enlightening and I think all of us came away with a different view about Personal injury lawyers, the rights of the victim and what to expect should something similar happen to you! We had to get back early so we bid adieu to the fine Ladies and Gentlemen and headed off down the highway leaving them to finish the days agenda and prepare for the General Meeting the next day! From all reports the convention was a success and a lot of business was accomplished and plans for the future set in motion! The OCC Luncheon at Queens Park I was asked to attend this gathering and was happy to oblige! Kris and I not being City Folk, headed down, giving ourselves lots of time for traffic jams, finding the spot and then finding a parking spot! We made good time getting there, the parking spot was a whole other issue! I swear it took as long getting from the lot to the entrance to Queens Park as it did to drive down from Newmarket, but we got there! Checked in with the guard on duty and wandered off in search of the rooms where The Rider’s Mag - Page 22
able to use HOV lanes and Profiling and harassment by Law Enforcement to name but a few! The OCC contingent was made up of members of various Motorcycle Clubs, notably The Hells Angels MC, Bacchus MC and some Independents! For many of these Government representatives this would be their first, first hand exposure to Motorcycle Clubs! Of course, they had heard of many of these Clubs through media reports who don’t often paint a very good or accurate picture of Club Members or shine a favourable light on them or from fictional movies and television shows! We hoped that we could alleviate some of their fears and concerns, dispel some of the myths and create an honest dialogue and create a better understanding of what Club members are really all about! We wanted to show that we hold our patches in high regard and that while we are still respectful of Society we stand our ground and want to be respected in return, not vilified! In wearing our patches within these hallowed halls where rights and freedoms are respected and demanded, laws that govern us all are created for the good of all Canadians, that we too are worthy of respect! If we can wear them here we should be able to wear them anywhere! They were presenting the budget that day, so all we knew that it would get busy but it took a while before they started to trickle in and then, like someone flicked on a switch, the room was suddenly a buzz with people! Tables that sat empty moments earlier were filled with people all engaged in conversation! Our delegation was well chosen as they were able to convey and articulate realistically and honestly what our goals were! The Minister of Highways appeared as well and joined in the various discussions and was very receptive to what we were trying to accomplish! Then it was over for Kris and me as our part of the day was done, a lot of pictures were taken in hopes that we could convey the real meaning of todays venture! The room emptied and it was time for us to head back to Newmarket! The work for the OCC Delegation however, was not done! They still had to attend a meeting with the Minister of Transportation at another spot were press wasn’t appreciated as they don’t want to leak stuff that may or may not be in the work! We left them to it and after the long trek back to the truck, began our fight with traffic back to Newmarket! All in all, it was a great day and a wonderful experience to be part of perhaps shaping better relationships between Government and the motorcycle Community!

Bike Shows, BBQ and WATER! It’s April and the sunshine is finally here! With it, comes the rain. Lots and lots of rain. In the hopes that it’ll clear the roads for what the street sweepers leave behind, I’m still a little cautious at this time of year. There’s still a lot of sand and gravel on the roads, and some people find it hard to navigate between those large lines that separate us from oncoming traffic. They like to ride the gravel, dusting it back onto the roads for us to navigate through once again. If you ride, I’m not telling you something that you don’t already know. I would like to be able to carry a little water gun, like those atomic blaster types, and every time a little douchebag decides to dust the road, (cause it’s usually an asshat in a little shitty 4 banger that does it) I’d like to cover his car with something….something that won’t get me arrested but guaranteed to leave a mark! Maybe write out “Asshole” in a nice paint-eating mixture. Ok…onto the good stuff! We did hit up the Peterborough Swap Meet, and I scored some stuff for my baby. (The ‘gator, not Mike..but he did get some sweet Easter chocolate and that counts!) My sweet girl Donna was there with her jewellery creations. I’ve bought a few things from her. I’ve mentioned her before as she’s also getting the word out for the Desiree’s Ride that’s happening in Peterborough.
Donna was kind enough to kiss my cheek and grab my ass, all while I was talking with the Pastor…ah good times lol. Lisa (the firecracker) was there as she made a rider quilt, one that will fit nicely in one’s saddlebag and it’s being auctioned off at Desiree’s ride. Hit me up for tics. As I mentioned above with my girl Donna, I also ran into Pastor Dave, and he was kind enough to tell me about the relocation of the Biker Blessing that’s now in Port Perry at Scugog Bikers Church. May 4th is the Blessing of the Bikes, and there’s a breakfast and a ride. The Toronto Springshow was small this year, but way better than the February show. It’s nothing like January’s show, which is something that I quite look forward to in these blah winter months. I become a hermit in the winter, and if you ask Mike, a tad moody. Not “boil your rabbit” moody, but I can be bitchy. More so than my usual delightful self that you all get to experience in the sunny months. I found this April show to be a little more fun. were so many vendors there that took the opportunity to enjoy the space of less vendors crowding, and somewhat less visitor traffic for that matter, and actually bond with folks on a more personal level. Now I’m not talking about personal level as in like, getting caught sucking face in a showroom closet. Just a friendly “hey, how’s it going,” type of personal level. I’m just saying, it’s easier to take the time to chat at events such as this. Plus, they have food! The Riders Mag booth was there, and Critter was hard to find. The man is busy. I ran into him more often wandering around, than I did finding him at that booth, which is always a good thing cause he’s a popular boy! I did stop at the booth a few times, had a chance to talk to Brenda and Chris, and a few others that were there to help and get the Mag out. It’s always a popular place and seating is usually limited. (I’ve brought my own chairs there!) Critter also presented at the show, and I don’t know how he does it. I’m tired just watching the man go! Around the corner was The Riders Group. Marie had her new Spider paint job on display, and a nice little Softail with fishtails was there and caught my eye. I picked up
a sweater for Mike (It’s a Riders sweater) and had the opportunity to take some nice video and pics for them. This group does great work for PTSD, and they’re getting bigger by the day. It’s nice to find a group of riders that doesn’t want anything from you, BUT you. You’re not obligated to do anything for them. However, at times, you just want to. Like donate. Everyone is friendly, and they ride just to ride. I did miss their arm wrestling at the booth though. I would have just watched though, not participate. My arms are like, well..let’s see…the size of a straw. Not the little ones you get at McD’s, either, I’m talking the larger ones that you get at Mac’s convenience…the ones that come with a slushy drink! (I’m beginning to think that my
life revolves far too much around the idea of ‘food’.) Besides, if I can punch myself in the face just trying to put clothes on, I can only imagine the carnage of trying to arm wrestle! Mike was looking forward to arm wrestling, but after tearing his bicep, I was not about to let that happen. After all, I need those pythons for after hours! (He’s laughing as I referred to them as pythons!) Across the way was the Desiree’s Ride booth. Hard to miss with the big purple bike! Donna has always been my contact and she’s always been so happy to see us there. The Peterborough Ride for Desiree is this summer and I’m looking forward to it. Check my page for the details cause we’ll be there! Ooh, Jason McCoy was there at the Ride for Dad Booth. I made sure we got to meet ‘n greet, and the man rides. He’s a huge supporter (an Ambassador) for the Ride for Dad. You can tell by talking to him with his deep voice that the man sings. Having great hair, (Did I mention that I love hair? Have you seen Mike??) and a cowboy hat just attracted more ladies to the booth. I’ve seen multiple pictures of this poor guy getting various sets of lips all over his face. I can’t imagine. My facial expressions would be far too animated, depending on the lips coming at me if I was that popular.
Now, as I was roaming around with that blond little firecracker Lisa that I’ve talked about, I ran into a relatively new buddy named Jim. This guy has a story and I gotta say, I can’t imagine going through what he’s been through in the last 11 months. The guy used to ride, and I mean everywhere. His wife did too! Something happened last year that changed everything. Jim was riding the roads, enjoying what the weather had to offer, in the company of good friends. Suddenly, Jim got a lap dance that not of us would ask for. (it wasn’t worth a ‘buck!” ba’dump bump!) A deer hit him and took him down, landing on his lap, and on his tank. Now Jim doesn’t recall the impact, just the waking up part. He Just wanted to pick up his bike and get moving. Jim’s buddies were there (thankfully) to help him until the ambulance arrived, but man did this guy take a hit. I’d say by exaggeration that he broke everything. What I mean is, he broke so much, that when he told me everything that he injured, I just exaggerate and say he broke everything. It’s awfully close to that description! I can say, I’ve seen and talked to people that have injured less. These folks then baby their recovery. They whimper, bitch and moan from their accident. (I’ve not been in a bike accident, so I can’t judge) But this guy, after four months, is up and around, working! Yeah, I said it. WORKING! Hauling heavy shit around. So, running into Jim and his buddies Toby and Rob was a
nice surprise. I’ve talked with Jim about motorcycle riders in general, and the things that he and I have noticed regarding the true rider mentality, and please allow me to provide a little lesson for the newbies or even a friendly reminder to some of us seasoned riding folk. Never leave a rider down (on the side of the road). A simple ‘thumbs up’ or friendly nod to ensure that the rider has things covered. Mike will even take the time to pull over, just to check. Some folks know the unspoken rule of placing ones helmet on the ground behind ones bike, as a signal that they could use a hand. Heaven knows most cagers won’t take notice. Honesty, integrity, respect and a little sense of humour go a long way. With all the contacts at the show, it’s only fitting to chat about the upcoming events. Not much in May, except maybe last month meet-ups to relieve cabin fever, but there’s a few events to note. Then, JUNE, and the events are a plenty! The Rider’s Mag - Page 25

of Tim Hortons at 400 Highbury Avenue in Middlesex. The mass participation in this ride will give us riders the media coverage to make people notice! Spring is here. Let’s Ride! Ooh, the first Riders Bike Night is at Blackstock Motorsports on May 7th! Door prizes, 50/50 and live entertainment! All benefit PTSD. Also on May 7th is Canada’s Capital Bike Social in Ottawa. Riders meet at Beyond the Pale Brewing Company. All on May 11th… The 15th Annual Charity Motorcycle Ride at the Lansdowne Children’s Centre. A great ride along the Grand River, and registration includes a light breakfast and BBQ. May 11th is Strictly V-Twin Swap Meet at Strictly V-Twin in Pefferlaw. Lots of vendors and who doesn’t love a good swap meet!!! May 11 is Desiree’s Ride Season Opener at Rolly’s Smokehouse in Smithville. This is the season opener for Desiree’s Ride, with live music, a silent auction, and renew your wedding vows!!! May 15 is Riders Bike Night in Belleville at Legendz. This bar is amazing, so I intend to go. May 23 is Cruise Night for Kids Sake at Longley HD. Burgers and drinks with proceeds going to Big Brothers, Big Sisters! May 25th has two events near and dear… the first is the Redneck MC Poker Run. I’ve been a few years now, and they don’t disappoint. First, the FOOD!! OMG the burgers are fantastic! The route they ride is spectacular, and the prizes are a mix of fun and necessity driven. These guys and gals are really just a great group that I and some of my buddies love handing out with. The ride starts at 9 am at the Ten Acre Truck Stop in Belleville. You really need to go. Check my page on more from these guys! The 2nd is the Spring Poker Run for Special Olympics Kawartha Lakes. Albeit, a police bike, but we’re working on the modifications with his acquired stickers, as the boy wants to do burnouts (see pic) and do stunt dirt bike things too. I fear Mom and Dad better have frequent flyers at the hospital. At least he’s learning the proper way to ride a motorized two wheeled MONSTER! Cheers!

I had crashed before but this was different, this time instead of immediately thinking of my bike, I laid in the ditch and wondered what my name was. “Hey! Are you hurt ?” another good one and still, no words came and no name but maybe if I rolled over and got up things would become clear. Ok then, on my knees and not so bad. Now, I’ll just push off with my arm and then, a totally unexpected face plant informed me that my arm wasn't working but I did know I was Dave…. Something. I found some words then and I can't print the first one. “I'm hurt" squeaked through the newly discovered pain and I'm sure was muffled by the tall grass poking into my now visor free helmet. My savior understood the gimpy face flop and degenerate language as an affirmative reply and bundled me into his car while I thought about lost time and keeping a rearranged shoulder very still. My fantasies of chasing Kenny Roberts on the straights and trying to out brake him were not working out so well. Peeking over his shoulder, my phantom rival watched as I careened straight through and with my bug eyes and panicked mind locked down, I was in too deep and over my line. The chattering forks quieted as I left the road and entered the trees. It was all good at first with the RZ's V-four burbling off pipe as I rushed into the corner and imagined that bumble bee yellow and black OW48 disappearing in a blue haze and well, I'll direct you back to where I woke up in a ditch wondering who I was. A Grand Prix racer was definitely not the right answer. The danger of warp speed and the panic it can create when
it’s time to turn again finally started to impress me that day and after a painful learning curve I now ride confident in returning home unscathed. Of course, the unavoidable is always lurking but by not blurring time and space between the turns and always controlling the next corner entry, I earn the privilege of riding fast (where it's proper). It's not the outright speed for most but the surge of acceleration that gets us there and it's dam hard to resist. I am a speed freak for sure but speed comes in many forms and my favorite could be 50 kph and wiggling on the tires edge. When I have experienced maximum speed I, well truth be told, I loved it but the kind of love that screams at you to “STOP IT, please. Don't. Stop. Don't stop.” We are all freaks here, it's ok. Tucked in and clicking up through the gears is something that is impossible to explain and on the street, a mistake. Not the hard acceleration, that’s bloody awesome, the mistake comes when we don't turn it off in time. As your helmet chinbar bangs the fuel tank and worrisome noises filter up from the engine as the last few hundred rpm struggle against the wind, that long straight gets The Rider’s Mag - Page 34
gobbled up way to fast. Suddenly the corner will be upon you and your mind is still crouched behind the screen in a world of hurricane winds and streaking scenery. Too fast. I was special back then, dim really and it took some spectacular displays of mayhem to teach me that public roads are not a racetrack. Don’t misunderstand, when the time and place is right I ride fast but a controlled fast, steady. After all, the power dialed by our right hand is a huge part of why we ride but 300 kph is without question, unnecessary on the street. So many things can go wrong at those speeds and trust me, the tick of time that it takes you to realize something is happening is all you get and before your brain can command your body, it will be over. Even if you get a chance, have you ever tried steering a bike at warp speed?, or how about some death braking from 290. Gyroscopic, inertia and the law of conservation will teach you a harsh physics lesson. For me and probably you, it's all about the corners. There is a mantra in the trucking world that says if there is a 50 kph turn at the bottom of a mountain, never go faster then 50 down said mountain. Apply a similar theory to how you ride and you will never find yourself panicking at a corner entry. Find your speed in the curves and accelerate between them but never stray too far above your average turn speed. Obviously, these things are relative. With corner complexities considered, double the posted limit plus a wee bit will leave my golden rule of 20-30% reserve to escape but, wait. Self incrimination by print isn’t actionable, is it? Um, so, not me but someone else would feel comfortable at those speeds and then a bump up on the straights but always staying within reach of the next corner. Following this rule will find you within your limits when it's time to turn. At the end now and I will finish with another quote by that famous Star fleet engineer. If you turn your id loose and rocket down that straight in search of a race win on the unpredictable street well, Montgomery Scott has some words for you. “The haggis is in the fire now laddy, for sure.”

S PRI NG HIG HWAY OF HE ROES CL EA N-U P
On Saturday April 13th, 2019 I had the opportunity to participate in the Spring clean-up of the Highway of Heroes. The history of this clean up is one of dedication and perseverance. One of the mottos that has been associated this Highway is “For all that gave some, and some that gave all.” One hundred and fifty-eight Canadian Soldiers were brought home down a 172 km stretch of Highway that came to be known as “The Highway of Heroes” during the Afghanistan War. The 118th Soldier brought home was Maj. Michelle Knight Mendes of Grafton and a very dear friend of Kerri Tadeu in 2009 and she was determined to create a legacy in memory of her friend. Along with MCPL (Ret). Collin Fitzgerald and Cpl. Nick Kerr they founded SerViCe. The capital letters stand for Soldier, Veteran and Civilian. In 2016 the three decided to adopt and clean a 1.18 km stretch of Highway in memory of Michelle and clean it up and the support they received was overwhelming and this was the beginning of the Spring and Fall Highway of Heroes Clean Up. Eventually after working with the Ministry of Transportation a total of 344 km of Highway was adopted to be cleaned. This is done in the weeks preceeding the National Day of Honour (May 9th) and Remembrance Day (Nov 11th). The Highway clean-up is also used as a mental health program based 95% on mental health and wellbeing and 5% actual clean up. The purpose of this is to get more people who feel isolated and alone out and among like minded people doing something that makes them feel important. I personally participated in my 1st clean-up in Spring 2018 and it changed my life. I joke with my friend Kerri that I am there for 95% garbage clean-up and 5% mental health but getting out and doing this event makes myself and many others feel good about themselves. A lot of Veterans never lose their desire to Serve, they just don’t know how when they do not fit back in what they call “normal Society.” This weekend when I cleaned the Highway I was honoured with being in the presence of Pte. Tyler Todd’s family. Pte. Todd was the 142nd Soldier brought home down the Highway in 2010. His mother and father and some family friends drove all the way from the Kitchener/Waterloo area to participate in this monumental clean-up and be a part of making the highway beautiful. I also learned that these wonderful people have turned their pain into a purpose by holding an annual hockey tournament in memory of Pte. Todd. Also present this year cleaning the Highway of Heroes was Anna Loveman whose son Craftsman Kyle Sinclair died alone in Petawawa in an unfortunate preventable incident in 2014. She finds great purpose participating in military related events with her Canadian Heroes car proudly bearing a picture of her son Kyle. Anna is another great example of turning pain into purpose and honouring her son’s memory. The Spring clean-up has now concluded and will return in the fall with people travelling near and far to participate. Well, it’s April, and that is supposed to mean “Spring has sprung and the grass has rizz”. Maybe some places, but for us in sunny southern Ontario, it has been wet and a little on the chilly side. Personally, I’ve only gotten out for a ride only once, so far! The only good thing about the rain is the roads get cleared of salt and sand. The Riders Mag goes International!! Recently, a Brother from OGOM (Old Geezers on Motorcycles) went for some sun time in Cuba. Tim took his copy of the Mag with him to catch up on some reading while away. Seems the folks in the land of old cars AND motorcycles are interested in what is going on in the Great White North! Tim gladly left his copy in good hands and I’m sure it’s going to get circulated around the island. Perhaps a Spanish language issue is in the works, eh, Critter!! Clare’s Cycle and Clare’s Harley-Davidson both celebrated their annual Spring Open House at each location. Stopped by the Harley dealership, the parking lot was full, but inside, not so busy. I wondered where all the folks were, but learned that a tour bus uses Clare’s H-D as a pick up spot, so that explained all the cars. That didn’t matter as just inside the door, Welland County MC was set up selling tickets on that beautiful 2019 HarleyDavidson Street Glide to be drawn at Biketoberfest September 21st. The fine folks from Motorcycle Country (Niagara) were also set up nearby, so had a gab session with them, and plugged the advantages of advertising their rides in the Mag as well. Took a walk around to check out the inventory, lots of nice Harleys there!! Next stop was Clare’s Cycles, where I was lucky enough to find a parking spot as someone was just leaving. It was packed inside with people! Clare’s Cycle have revamped the store to put riding apparel out in the front. Guardians of the Children was well represented there and they managed to get a radio plug on Giant FM 91.7 courtesy of that well-known local sports reporter, Hudley Fudpucker!! Guardians of the Children recently won the “EDDY Award”, sponsored by The Riders Mag, at the Spring Motorcycle Show. Congratulations to that fine group!
Speaking of the Spring Motorcycle Show, I journeyed to the International Centre to help out at the Rider’s Mag booth. Had the chance to put faces and names together…finally!! It helps to picture a face when you’re talking to someone from the office and the others that help put this magazine together. So to Brenda, Kris, Kim and Barbie, and one other that I totally forget his name (sorry..old age kicking in), thank you for the opportunity to hang out for the day and get to know y’all . While at the show, I met up with several friends who also had a booth at the show…… Angie Sandow (Riders Mag Columnist) & Lloyd Walsh, at Angies “Just Ridin’” booth, Pyper, Bob, and Tiger from BRO Port Colborne promoting the Fort Erie Swap Meet. Pyper is like a whirlwind, she’s everywhere!! Special thank you to those who stopped by the booth and bought a Riders Mag or started a 12-month subscription. In case you didn’t know, the Mag is $2.00 per issue now. Rising costs have made this change necessary. Yeah, you can read it online, but as several people said, you just can’t beat being able to take the printed copy anywhere with you, including the “john”!! Some sad news, a couple of weeks ago. A friend, a person that I called Brother, and just an all around good guy passed away unexpectedly. John “Furbie” Galley, the longtime First Officer of CMC 007 Hamilton was always a fun person to be around and an inspiration. What makes it even sadder is the fact he was getting ready to move east to be with his family there and take on being the Provincial Officer for CMC chapters in New Brunswick. change, tune-up, and a new rear tire. The first “warm” day we get, I will take care of that list. Seems that the first part of the riding season has various charity rides every weekend in the Niagara area. I would suggest that the area clubs consider making use of the ”What’s Shaking” section of the Mag to advertise your ride and reach out to other riders both near and those thinking of coming to Niagara for a ride . I’ll be at most, if not all, the local rides here, taking pics and taking notes. Brutus the Cat is giving me the evil eye so time to sign off for now. 1998 to 2017 Evolution and Twin Cam Clutch: Part I The Twin Cam clutch had its beginnings with the last Evolution motorcycles in 1998 as is the custom of Harley-Davidson to test products before new model introduction. Back in 1990, Harley-Davidson began to use the same clutch packs in both Big Twin models and the Sportster line. The Twin Cam clutch follows this manufacturing money saving tradition into the Twin Cam and the 1998-and-later Evolution Sportsters. Previously, Big Twin and Sportster clutches were very different from each other. Nineteen years is a long time in the Harley scheme of things not to upgrade such a wearable item as a clutch. This speaks to the quality and durability of these clutch plates and related components. However, there are variations. I will go into depth for those later Twin Cam models that use a hydraulic clutch when I progress to discussing Milwaukee Eight clutching. Milwaukee-Eight models increase the number of clutch plates to 10 friction (fiber) plates with 9 steel plates, with some having a differing dimension. Twin Cams use 9 friction and 8 steel plates, all of the same dimensions. However, in the crossover to the newer Milwaukee-8’s there may be some Twin Cams using the larger number of plates. Again, Harley does this to subject the new setups to ensure the changes will work well under customer rider duress ... or sometimes, there is not enough just-in-time inventory to complete a build. Sometimes, the odd new models may also have obsolesced components to use up excess old inventory. The 88 cubic inch, 2006 Dyna Glide was used as the template for many 2007-and-later 96 c.i. and 110 c.i. changes, notably the welcome advance from the disastrous spring-loaded cam tensioners to the reliable and capable hydraulic chain adjusters. Most models still use the efficient, sort-of -flat, slightly convex/concave diaphragm clutch spring introduced with the first modern wet clutches circa 1985. They remain for manually-operated clutches. However, H-D begins to discontinue their use with hydraulically actuated clutches in favor of coiled springs. I can break the years into sections of full or almost full compatibility between models. They are 1998 to 2006 except 2006 Dyna Glide (88 cubic inch); 2006 Dyna Glide 88 c.i. and 2007 to 2010 96 c.i. and 110 c.i.; 2011 to 2016 models, which still use a diaphragm clutch spring except the 2013 to 2017 CVO Screamin’ Eagle and the 2015 to 2016 FLHTCL (Low), and some Police bikes; the 2017 Twin Cam uses a diaphragm clutch spring and the hydraulically actuated 2018 Softail models, thus using the coiled springs setup. I know this is mind numbing. H-D begins replacing the larger diameter diaphragm clutch spring with three much smaller diameter, heavy duty coil springs. The Factory does this in conjunction with the “slip and assist” clutching models replacing the traditional The Rider’s Mag - Page 50
manual clutch with a new hydraulic clutch. Harley does this on the 2013 to 2017 CVO/SE and the 2015 to 2016 FLHTCL Twin Cams. Slip and Assist is supposed to make clutching easier. I rode a 2017 Twin Cam across Europe and back with a hydraulic clutch. My forearm, supporting my clutching hand looked like Popeye’s when done. Like the primary chain adjustment on older models, clutch adjustment has gone away. No adjustment is supposedly required for the new hydraulic clutch system. However, these same models have suffered a plethora of clutching issues and breakdown problems. The internal clutch pack components have no adjustments. The oil (Dot 4 fluid) does not compress, so it is unforgiving especially on the very sensitive throw out bearing mechanism. More on this in successive articles. The clutch is an uncomplicated way to interrupt power transfer without damaging parts or stalling the engine for the purpose of changing gears, smooth acceleration when proceeding forward, and of course stopping. Before circa 1985 for Big Twins and 1972 for Sportsters, riders became expert at disassembling their dry (no lubrication) clutches on the side of the road, scraping the oil off them by standing on each plate with one foot and rotating them on the cement or asphalt to remove impregnating oil. Dry clutch plates will not tolerate oil as they will slip and not grab. With the advent of wet clutches after these dates, a clutch plate will not work for long unless bathed in oil for cooling. Always improving, superior seals, gasketing, and fasteners helped keep the primary oil inside the primary chaincase as the years progressed. The Twin Cam engineers were determined to resolve all leakage issues of the past and they did a pretty good job. Brown paper bag gaskets of the Panhead era, progressed through the use of cork, thin, waxed cardboard, to raised, center silicone-beaded gaskets to the sophisticated Twin Cam metal gaskets coated with rubber and utilizing silicone beads. Oil wrecks a dry clutch and no oil burns out a wet clutch. In 1999, the three sometimes leak-prone clutch access derby hold-down screws on the Evo replaced with five T-27 Torx screws on the Twin Cam. This was a good and necessary improvement since the 3-screw derby’s could warp allowing oil to leak out. The 5 Torx screws MUST be secured to specification (84 to108 inlbs (9.5 to 12.2 Nm)) in a cross-hatch pattern beginning at the top or else derby warping may occur. The specification is inch pounds not foot pounds and Nm (Newton meters) is the metric equivalent. 12 in/lbs = 1 ft/lb
divide in/lbs by 12 to get ft/lbs multiply ft/lbs by 12 to get in/lbs 1 in/lb = .113 Nm (Newton meter) 1 ft/lb = 1.3558 Nm Why Torx fasteners? My conspiratorial mind thinks that although they are superior to what went before, they are unnecessary for this task. However, most riders will not have Torx wrenches. Therefore, they have to go to a dealer for maintenance work. Furthermore, engineers replaced the previous good round rubber O-ring of this primary clutch inspection derby with an even better quad seal. The 1990 to 1997 clutch has 6-steel clutch plates in combination with 8-fiber clutch plates because there is the additional spring plate (37977-90). It has smooth steel sides for the alternating sequence of the fiber plates. The 1998-to 2017 Evo and Twin Cam clutch pack eliminates the use of a clutch spring plate. H-D increases the number of steel clutch plates (.63” thick) to eight and the fiber plates (HD-37319-98 x 9) to nine. Thus clutch plate contact surface increases for superior clutching ability. The center clutch hub fits onto the transmission mainshaft inside the rear of the primary on the left side of the Twin Cam, all Big Twins and Sportsters. The Big Twin and XL 1990 to present spline fitment is the strongest and has the truest alignment. A large, left hand thread, clutch nut locks the inner hub in place. The outer clutch shell also known by the Harley colloquialisms as the basket or drum can rotate freely on the inner clutch hub, with clutch disengaged; clutch lever pulled in and bike not in motion. The two separate by a bearing or bearings. Twin Cams separate by one large bearing. Now, a mechanism needs to hold the inner hub with the outer one to act as a single unit when wanting the bike to move forward. The steel and fiber clutch plates that occupy space between the inner hub and outer shell perform this function. Clutch plates are round with a hollow portion in their centers. The Twin Cam thin steel plates have a serrated-pattern inner diameter that fit over mating outer diameter serrations on the center clutch hub. The thin fiber plates have patternserrations on their outer diameter that fit or lock into similar inner diameter serrated clutch shells. Harley-Davidson clutches have come a long way from crude, relatively inefficient, bulky contraptions to lighter, stronger proficient units of torque transfer. Simple changes in mounting add strength but also eliminate some of the previous vibration. The clutch plates, whether fiber or steel, inner locking or outer locking have loose fitment in order to move freely along serrations, slots or fingers, whatever the case may be. If denied free movement by warpage, too tight fitment or burring of mating parts, the clutch will not freely engage or disengage. When the clutch engages (handlebar clutch lever out), to put the bike in motion, the clutch plates lock or clamp together via friction material against steel. The effectiveness of a clutch is all about friction fiber material, how well it retains friction under extreme use and heat and the amount of friction surface area. Hello and happy spring! I am just making my way home from one epic moto adventure in Baja Mexico. The weather was sunny and 75 for my twelve-day desert excursion. If only that were the case back home, a tremendous winter storm is once again sweeping through the mid-western US. I’m slowly “vanning” my way through it to Wisconsin and reminiscing on Baja good-times. The trip began as a 21-day tour from Las Vegas to Cabo but ended up being a 12-day whirlwind expedition to several destinations. Night one was a fluke of a stop in Gonzaga Bay looking for lunch and fuel. We spotted a restaurant sign down a dirt road towards the sea of Cortez and decided to take a chance and try it out. This lunch stop ended up being an overnight beach adventure at Alfonsina’s hotel and restaurant. As I was unloading my bike I met Kirk, 6-time winner of the Baja 500 on 3 different machines and one hell of an interesting dude. The day rolled on and we talked more with Kirk and gained tremendous knowledge on traveling Baja. Also, at this stop, we ran into a group of guys from Colorado who had been riding the peninsula for thirty years. We learned of some must-see stops and places to venture to and made more new friends. Somewhere around the crack of noon the next day we got rolling again and headed towards the Bay of Los Angeles. You see things in Mexico run on “Mexican minutes” and sometimes you have to wait for gas or for stores to open. The bikes rolled along the gravel “highway” and washed out roads and we soaked in the scenery as the day passed by. We couldn’t help but spot a dirt road off the side of the highway after our stop at the famous “Coco’s Corners.”
After taking a sharp left off the highway we stumbled into a section of single track that moto dreams are made of! Giant cactus, colored rock hills, golden sand, and desert blooming flowers. Absofuckinglutly the best dirt biking either of us had ever experienced. I even got to pass Travis on a long section of whoops as I discovered my sand riding skills. After the twohour desert tour, we found ourselves back at the highway about 30 miles from our days' destination. The bay of L.A. isn’t much of a town these days but we spotted a few familiar faces waving to us from a hotel patio. Sure The Rider’s Mag - Page 52
enough, here was Kirk and two other guys from last night’s hotel. Many drinks and some spectacular food later, we pulled the bikes into our room for the night and hit the hay. Costa Del Sol, our hotel, had the best shrimp omelet anyone has ever eaten and I was a tad under the weather with the bottle flu so Travis had to eat it for me. Damn my luck. Day three started out as a highway run down to Guerrero Negro but turned out to be a 50+ mile off-road adventure to the San Borja Mission. Wow, what a ride. We ran into our friends from Colorado at lunch and picked up more tips on where to visit and where to stay. Once back on the main road we stumbled onto a section of dirt road that lead us straight to a rocky beach that should be featured on a postcard. We did some hill climbing and found a different path to run us back to the highway then continued onto Guerrero Negro. Again, what a day. The scenery and riding in Baja are simply incredible and best experienced on a dirt bike. We got a room at the
Malarrimo hotel and had a seafood platter for two that could have fed three and tasted like heaven. The food in this part of the world is so fresh and delicious it’s hard to even describe. Up with the sun to get our day rolling we decided to try and find a lookout point someone had told us about. I took us on every wrong way street out of town possible and we ended up at a mud flat watching a Ford truck get stuck way out by the coastline. After an hour of not finding the right road, we decided the lookout would be there next time and traveled on. Taking the advice of some of our new friends we stopped for the night in San Ignacio. The town square was full of wonderful food and a mission built in the 1700s so we took a walk up and explored. We ran into our Colorado friends for the third day in a row at our hotel, Baja is a small little world of its own with limited highways and towns. Every day is a new adventure with endless options for offroad travel and we mixed it up day to day. This day we were rolling out of San Ignacio and it’s beautiful palm tree forest at an early hour, well, earlier than noon anyway. We rode a short way through some excellent mountains down to Santa Rosalia. This was a bit of a crazy city and we might have taken a few wrong turns, drove in some circles, and got a bit lost on top of a hill while we were there. But, throughout the day we did manage to get the bikes washed, change the oil in the KTM in our hotel room and I did some hotel laundry. We decided to turn around from Santa Rosalia the next day and meander our way back north. The return trip was full of excellence and even more adventure! We recently went to Montreal to attend the 4th Annual Motorcycle Swap meet held in the east end of the city. Ignoring the insanity of the roads and drivers in downtown Montreal and the struggle to find a parking spot anywhere near the hall, we still had a good time! Unlike swap meets we are used to in Ontario this one was a little unorthodox in getting open, but it worked out fine even with vendors having only about one hour to get in and set up. The weather was the best we have experienced since last fall and because it was so nice out a lot of riders came on their bikes. One thing is for sure, among the younger riders in Quebec, the Bobber-style look is alive and thriving! Out of all the motorcycles parked outside, about 70% of them were Bobbers and many of them were very Old School in their build design and all them were interesting to look over. There were a number of people I know from eastern Ontario who were there looking for deals and there were definitely some deals to be found! On more than one occasion I found myself taking pictures of swap I thought certain friends might be interested in and sending them a text in case they wanted me to buy it for them. I had an opportunity to talk to two members of the Montreal BACA Bikers Against Child Abuse Chapter whom
I have met before, when they came down to participate in the Ottawa Chapter of BACA’s Ride & Poker Run. This event takes place this year, on July 20th! I should mention that this year their ride will start from a new location. Instead of beginning in Embrum they will be starting from the Canadian Tire in Kanata at 8181 Campeau Dr. In the west end of Ottawa. As in past years, there will be a Free Breakfast provided by The Celtic Brotherhood and BACA. They will end their ride and the party begins at the Greely Legion located at 8021 Mitch Owens Drive in Greely in Ottawa’s south end. Grant Harrison dropped by for a visit, he come down to Montreal looking for deals and was kind enough to make a food run for us, because we are too old to live off of The Rider’s Mag - Page 54
Smarties, licorice bits and soda pop. Another friend and a very familiar face at motorcycle shows from Montreal to Toronto was Alain Delarosbil who is the king of silver and stainless-steel jewelry! No matter what show he is at, his booth surrounded by people anxious to see his excellent designs and creations! Like us, he was trying this show for the very first time. Like most swap meets, things were winding down a bit after 1:00 pm and in my last walk around, I stopped by to say thanks to the Montreal Swap Meet’s promoter Tony and to thank all of his crew for all their help! Hopefully, we will come down and take part in next year’s meet as well. As I mentioned earlier, that Saturday was the absolute best weather we have see
in the eastern Ontario/western Quebec area since early last Fall and on our return trip we noticed quite a few bikes out on the 40/417. But by mid-afternoon there were some really strong crosswinds that came up and they raised the degree of difficulty of riding at any real speed. A few days ago, I received some great news! Pastor Rob, of the Capital City Bikers Church, informed me that the Church had been so overwhelmed by the response from area riders after they cancelled their “famous” swap meet last year, that they decided to hold a “Kicking Spring Off Right! – Bike Blessing & BBQ”! This will occur on Sunday May 5th at the Bikers Church on Carillon St in Vanier. The event will include popular free pulled pork dinner for the first 300 riders/passengers! There will be a show & shine, dyno runs and burnout pits. There will also be vendors on site and lots of trophies and door prizes as well. They intend to have live music to entertain all their guests supplied by the popular Blues & Company Band. For most riders in the Ottawa region, including myself, the Bikers Church Swap Meet had become a sort of official start to riding season! Many of us were disappointed when we heard they had discontinued it last year. Now this event will more than make up for that in spades! I expect a large turnout for this event and should be more fun than the original swap meets because they will be adding all sorts of activities, throughout the day. If you do decide to make it out to the CCBC event please be sure and stop by and pick up a copy of The Riders Mag and while you are there keep in mind if you know of any events or news you think our local motorcycle community might be interested in please take the time to let me know. I also want to remind everyone that on May 4th the Bondslaves MC will be hosting their Mega Swap at the Greely Legion. Besides all the vendors selling swap they will also be featuring two tribute bands, Great Scott, an AC/DC tribute band & Mothership, inspired by Led Zeppellin! So, all in all, this first weekend of May looks to be a real double header good time for our motorcycle community! I hope you will all try and make it out to both events. Last month the members of The Celtic Brotherhood held their Irish Heritage Party. Along with a number of friends from some of the other area clubs we held a large potluck dinner and social gathering! Included were, good people like Big Bird from BACA Ottawa, Duane Chevalier from Simple Men Mc/Snake River and Peri & Tim Poirier from B.A. Machine Performance Cycle, Felix from Cycle Salvage and of course our brother, Doug Taylor. It was an awesome gathering and the Club holds this event each Spring not only to celebrate their cultural heritage and traditions but also to thank the people and clubs who have helped them with their events and projects in the previous year. There were a lot of cakes on the dessert table and as always Brother Hark’s wife, Janet out did herself with the giant Shamrock The Rider’s Mag - Page 55
cake she baked and decorated herself. There is something about how having a potluck dinner where everyone brings something really brings people that much closer together and demonstrates an Old School tradition that perhaps some of the other clubs should consider. A year ago, Canadians were devastated with the untimely death of at least 16 of Humboldt Broncos hockey organization in a senseless collision between the team’s bus and a tractor trailer hauling peat moss! Many of those who survived were in extremely serious condition. I remind all of you about this, because in the motorcycle community the numbers of parents and grandparents who have young boys and girls involved in hockey programs would be a very high percentage! So many in our motorcycle community identified with the families of the victims and survivors in Humboldt. Out of all the stories that came out over the days following this terrible accident was one that caught my attention because it not only spoke to the thoughtfulness of the young man who passed away it also spoke to who we are as a nation. I have mentioned in many of my past columns and that all members of the motorcycle community should be sure to register on line as organ donors in the event that they are involved in a serious accident! The story of Logan Boulet came to mind. He was one of the Broncos players and he had been placed on life-support to allow for the organ donation process to take place while awaiting a surgical team from an Alberta hospital to arrive in Saskatoon. This young man had made a point to register as an organ donor on his 18th birthday and his thoughtful and kind act led to at least six people receiving the gift of life from him! As word got out of his “Gift of Life” the number of people who registered as organ donors has spiked tremendously, and in Ontario, our Trillium Network said it saw 82 new sign ups on the Sunday, tripling the number recorded over the previous two weeks! That number jumped to 412 on the Monday and a mind blowing 865 on the Tuesday! Their daily average is only about 42 sign ups according to Trillium, so when you think about it, this kind act by one young man from Western, Canada, who is pretty representative of sons, daughters or grandchildren everywhere, caused a ripple effect, possibly saving the lives of over 1500 people in Ontario alone! That’s not including cornea and skin transplants etc in the rest of Canada and this is the kind of spirit we have to keep alive in our country. Recently, Bette and I were guests at a special ceremony that took place in the 2nd floor salon at Moncions, “Your Independent Grocery store” that recognized the incredible efforts of two friends. Dave and Lynn Presley for promoting organ donor registration with the BEADONOR.CA program and are responsible for those green ribbons that are usually on the table beside The Riders Mag. Dave is a kidney transplant recipient! It was a life saving procedure for him the both of he and Lynn decided they would devote their time to promoting organ donor registration and give back in some way for Dave’s life being saved by the generous act of some stranger. Many of you may have read in my past columns about a lovely lady named Shirley who is very special to us and who was a double lung recipient just a little over 4 years ago and is doing really well today and again because somewhere, an unknown stranger, was kind enough to register as a donor! Our lives are enriched because Shirley is still among us due to the generosity of others! Anyhow we were more than honored to take part in the ceremony and had an opportunity to talk to some of our local politicians about their support of the Ottawa and area motorcycle community and perhaps even having them attending some of the events and rides that take place over the summer. Our own city councillor and friend, George Darouze who is a Harley rider himself, was there! You have seen pictures of George at many motorcycle events in the Mag! He will be the acting deputy mayor for the Proclamation that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month Ceremony at Ottawa City Hall on April 27th. This event is hosted by SOAR (Society of Ottawa Area Riders.). Along with George, there was another member of Ottawa City Council, Carol Anne Meehan, who is a well-known media personality and who didn’t mind having her photo taken with George, Marcel Moncions or myself which was greatly appreciated. Two other prominent politicians present and who recognize all the good work our motorcycle community does were Goldie Ghamari, Conservative MPP (who we first met at our Annual Ride for Autism Ottawa two years ago.) and my The Rider’s Mag - Page 56

I am trying to get Pierre to attend this year’s Awareness Ride for Brain Injury taking place on June 15th, because Pierre is a hands on kind of person and his support for any cause is a bonus. We all have to keep in mind that no matter how much we hope it won’t happen, motorcycle riders will get in accidents this Summer and way too many will be tragically killed so being an example to both our children and grandchildren and to show what being a Biker and a Canadian is really all about lets all try and make the effort to go online and register ourselves as organ donors. When you are at some event and see The Celtic Brotherhood booth or me at the Mag table please ask for info on registration and pick up your green ribbon supporting organ donation. Very special thanks going out to Marcel and Linda Moncion, both Harley riders, for not only their support of organ donation for which they also received an award but also for their strong support of The Riders Mag and their sponsorship for most of The Celtic Brotherhood events including the Awareness Ride for Brain Injury. I would like to remind area riders to add to their rides/ events calendar is the 4th Annual Ironsides MC Charity Dice Run/Show & Shine being held on August 10th starting at the Visitor Information Center up the valley in Renfrew. There will be a BBQ after the ride, so hopefully, if you are part of the Ottawa Valley motorcycle community you will put this event on your calendar and get out and help the Veterans Emergency Transition Service while having a good time doing it! This will be an event that I certainly will try and participate in both because of the club and the cause. I never know where the time goes but it turns out that this year will be the 11th Annual Burn Out Boys Party & Ride and it will be held on Sunday May 19th this year. This event, like past years promises live music and lots of craziness, like only members of the B.O.B RC can get into! I can promise you that you are not likely to ever see as many burnouts as you will see and hear at their party. One other thing that I want to ask all of the readers and supporters of The Riders Mag, there are over half a million Brain Injury Survivors in the province of Ontario alone and many of them are bikers! They are all representative of our own family members, friends, neighbors and people we work with! They need your support for the “Invisible Injury”, so please contact your local Brain Injury Association and help out whether by donating or in some other way! Also please remember to spend your money with businesses such as those that advertise in our Mag or who have proven they are truly Biker-Friendly and have shown their support for our lifestyle and in turn deserve our support and business back.
