All about curtain rails The Length Measure the width of your window and add 30 to 40 cm. The resulting number will give you the best possible length of the rod, at which fully open curtains will clear the whole window. Drapery hardware usually consists of the pole, brackets, and two decorative finials, with additional parts like rings, clips, or eyelets. For a rod less than 2 metres long, two brackets will be sufficient; for longer rods you will need the third bracket in the centre in order to prevent them from sagging under the weight of the fabric. When selecting brackets consider the distance they will allow between your rod (and, accordingly, your curtains) and the wall. This is especially important for smaller rooms, for which you need the shortest brackets. Decorative finials present an easy and inexpensive way to introduce some changes into your decor. There is no need to buy a new rod, the new finials will do the trick – just make sure they fit the diameter of the old pole.

Materials The strongest rods are made of iron, stainless steel, or brass. They are reliable and durable thus being ideal for hanging heavy thick draperies. Rods made of wrought iron fit classic decor, as well as the country and Provence styles. Straight geometrical lines in either shiny or matt brass look good in modern interiors. Metal sets can include single, double, or multiple poles to use for hanging several layers of curtains and drapes. Wooden rods are the best choice for a classic decorating style. The most popular of them are made of oak, cherry wood and exotic types of wood. Unlike the metal ones, wooden rods can be single-pole only.

The least expensive rod material is plastic. Its advantages include low price and wide range of colours, while its drawbacks are low durability and strength. Besides the wall-mounted rods, there is a ceiling-mounted type that makes a low ceiling visually higher. In their case there is no need worrying about the rod length.

Choices, Choices‌ The lightweight string consists of a steel wire with metal brackets but because it tends to sag you can use it only for the lightest sheers. The universal version is a hollow round rod of metal, plastic, or wood, with draperies attached to them with rings, hooks, or pocketstyle. Wrought iron decorative poles coated with a layer of paint and varnish can be used for any weight fabrics, as long as you choose the diameter in accordance with the weight. Traverse rods consist of a metal, most often – aluminum, shape installed on the wall or ceiling with the help of brackets and covered with a decorative moulding made of wood, particle board, or plastic imitating the material of your choice. When buying a traverse rod make sure the hooks move along it with ease. Combination rods hang pinch-pleated draperies in combination with other styles of drapery for a multi-layered effect. Not all curtain rods are simple straight poles, curved and hinged poles are available from numerous companies, allowing installation in bay windows and around curved walls and corners. Curtain rods can also be of a crane or swing arm design.

PURPLE CHANDELIER This colour chandelier has the same properties as the red or pink one. It is bright, noticeable, dominant, exciting and dramatic. It is ideal for such styles as Baroque, glamour, Art Deco and Arabic. The only room where it will not be as appetizing as the former colours is the kitchen.

ORANGE CHANDELIER These usually decorate kitchens and dining rooms. Orange is a cheerful, appetizing, uplifting and energizing colour.

BLUE, NAVY AND TURQUOISE CHANDELIER

ALL ABOUT HOME

Beaded chandeliers in blue and turquoise have become very popular. They are hung in the kitchen area and over the dining table. However, the blue is not conducive of appetite, but after all it is good news for those who watch their weight. This type of chandelier gives the room an ornate look.

GREEN CHANDELIER A green chandelier looks like a piece of precious jewelry. It enhances the room décor and allots it a note of noble luxury. Green chandeliers suit sophisticated and luscious places or can be used in the room in any other style as a refreshing accent.

YELLOW CHANDELIER

This is one of the most popular solutions. The colour of heaven feels natural when it is up above your head. Chandeliers in various shades of blue are versatile and suit any décor – from strict to soft, from classic to industrial, and from feminine to brutally masculine.

4

Choosing a Chandelier

Chandeliers in yellow are not very common. They are unimpressive. After all, both white and translucent chandeliers appear yellow when fitted with warm light bulbs. In general, a yellow chandelier is quite neutral and is not very noticeable.

e-mail: aahtoronto@gmail.com

WHAT COLOUR TO CHOOSE? You can choose a chandelier in a colour that is secondary in your décor. For example, if the walls and furniture are beige but the drapes, chairs and the ottoman are blue, hang a chandelier in the latter shade. Chandelier can be in the colour of a few accents. For example, a monochromatic décor in shades of gray can be diluted with green cushions and a green chandelier. The modern interior is characterized by the introduction of individual accents. For example, in black and white room you can hang a red chandelier even if there are no other red accents present.

A CHANDELIER FOR A MODERN MINIMALIST STYLE If a chandelier perfectly matches the style, size, and décor of the room but its colour coincides with no other element, don’t let this stop you. The colour plays a much smaller role than design. After all, you can always introduce several small elements of the same colour as your chandelier to make the overall picture whole.

Console Tables Framed photographs and travel souvenirs, vases, candlesticks, figurines – all of us have a hard time parting with our favourite knick-knacks. Collections belong on specially made shelves and glass-door display cabinets but they can also be placed on a console table.

A console table is a type of table that can conveniently accommodate accessories and other items that are meant to be displayed. It is usually placed with its back against a wall or can be even attached to the wall if it has only two front legs. Free standing tables have four sturdy legs. A console table is an attractive and utilitarian piece of furniture that is capable of conveying elegance and class to the chosen space. WHEN USING A CONSOLE TABLE AS A CENTREPIECE FOR A DECORATIVE GROUPING FOLLOW A FEW SIMPLE RULES • Make sure the style of the space around your console table matches the objects displayed on the table; • The classic style of decor calls for symmetry for which large objects should come in pairs; other styles do not have such strict requirements; • Hang a mirror or a large picture over the console table;

• Use local spotlight if possible like a wall bracket or a table lamp; • When the objects on the table are not too small and the composition receives enough light from a nearby window, add some live plants; • Try to combine objects of the same style and size and have no more than 7 to 10 pieces displayed, with the number going down for larger objects; • Choose pieces to be displayed by the principle of similarity of texture, colour, style, or shape; • To help the eye perceive your composition as three-dimensional choose objects that differ in their size and height. Before arranging your “art gallery”, answer the objections of those who consider it just a dust-gathering headache. Yes, it does gather more dust, than, say, curtains or furniture but you need to dust every item in your surroundings just the same, and the beautiful result your will get from your console display is worth an extra effort - and at no extra cost, at that, but just by shifting

accents on some objects already in your possession. Besides, you can always refresh or replace the displayed pieces for a special occasion like holidays or a family celebration or when you have gotten tired of old ones.

Checks are back SUCCESSFUL COMBINATIONS

The check pattern can successfully combine not only different colours, but also different materials. For example, coloured glass, natural stone and wood produce a unique checkered panel.

The classic “checkerboard” looks best in black and white; gray can be substituted for black if so desired. Complement this with stylish plastic furniture and modern equipment - and you get a readymade high-tech style!

By the way, in England the checkered pattern has appeared in interior design during the reign of Queen Victoria, and became trendy under Elizabeth II. Thomas Burberry was the supplier of checkered fabrics to Her Majesty the Queen.

Blue, white and red are traditional country style check colours that perfectly combine with wicker utensils, full curtains and potted flowers in beautiful pots; they will look natural in the kitchen. Non-standard colors like turquoise, purple or terracotta combined with simple patterns are the attributes ethnic styles. They will create a perfect background for any travel memento collection.

Today, the British company is famous for its trademark check in red, white, black and beige. From time to time Burberry dilutes its classic combination with other colours. For instance, a few years ago the introduction of pink checks has created quite a stir, and the prospect for next summer seems to be a fashionable beige and white on a blue background checkered fabric, which will be great for creating a nautical theme décor.

bedroom, décor in small checks in pastel shades, and for the nursery and kitchen, brightly coloured large patterns.

Checks have always firmly held the leading position among interior decoration patterns. Some styles such as country or English are impossible to imagine without them. BEST USES Despite their sharp and independent look checks are excellent when combined with other patterns. There are myriads of pattern and colour combinations for checkered materials. Some of them are used more often than the others and are already considered a classic. For example, muted gray and purple checkered pattern is often found in Scandinavian interiors, bright blue with red decoration, in American homes, and beige and red combined with blue tones and florals, in traditional country and Provence styles. If you feel like decorating your home with this concise pattern feel free to try it on for any room. For example, for the living room try checkered fabric in golden tones with splashes of green and burgundy, for the

said it before but your environment and, more specifically, your immediate space (bedroom, office, etc.) has manifold effects on your mentality and physiology. I’m telling you, the chef inside this kitchen was INSPIRED and could not wait to get in to start cooking. I have to remember to go back this week and see what’s cooking, I suspect it’s going be extremely good. So, if you’re reading this and are planning a construction or renovation project in the future, pause at some point and see if you can answer “why” you’re taking on this particular building project and what it means to you. The answers can get interesting. For the Pastor, amongst other things, the final product set a standard of personal pride and a source of inspiration for the congregation. Once again, your environment impacts you on a deep emotional level. And if you are wise enough to surround yourself with people and things that genuinely inspire you - then you just may have it made! I will leave you with this quote from the Bible to ponder: “For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God”. A special thanks to the Hope Seventh Day Church, Pastor Dr. Floyd Spence, and elders Geddes Blackwood and Pete McKenzie for giving us the opportunity to be part of the project.

Why we build… Not long ago, my team and I were invited to the grand opening of the newly renovated kitchen at Hope Seventh Day Adventist Church in Toronto. The building is around 60 years old and is nestled inside a residential district along Keele and the 401. We were privileged to work with the Church to design and build the kitchen.

As a part of the ceremony, the Pastor and a number of elders read prayers and took time to reflect on what this renovation project meant to not only members, but the students and staff of the Montessori school that occupies the building during the week and even the homeless who might now be fed food prepared inside this kitchen. I must confess: by the end of the readings, I was moved. I also took time to reflect on what it means to “build” for me. I know I’ve

Correct Furniture Arrangement

other words, do not overload any one part of the room. Transformers like small tables with collapsible tops or a set of tables, folding into one another are perfect for small rooms. They will save space while not upsetting the balance.

The task of interior decoration may at first glance seem simple: just buy everything you need and arrange in an order to your liking. However, when furnishing a room it is not always possible to achieve harmony and any errors become immediately apparent.

The next common error is the play of light. The position of the windows should always be taken into consideration. Lightweight sheers on the southward directed window will not save your furniture from fading affected by sunlight. In this case it is better to choose items in light tones or use heavy drapes. Choose bright spotlights for darker corners of the room.

ALONG THE WALL The first mistake made by many is positioning furniture around the room’s perimeter. This method used to be popular as one creating the maximum amount of space in a small place. Today, designers do not approve of such approach and recommend moving away from stereotypes. A desk, a bookcase or stacked shelves placed in the central part of the room will add zest to it. These items look interesting and help zone the space.

ALL ABOUT HOME

AN EMPTY MIDDLE Many designers as well as many owners consider a spacious room a stroke of luck. Yet the owners of huge rooms often encounter a problem of decorating it properly. A common misconception is that the centre of a large living room should be free of furniture while in fact, a spacious room looks deserted if its middle is empty and its furniture, eclectic. To create a unified look, try to implement the “room in the middle” concept. A shaggy rug, a low rectangular sofa and a couple of recliners make a spacious living room an ideal place for friendly get-togethers.

TOO MUCH FURNITURE IN A SMALL ROOM In the meantime, the owners of small rooms often tend to jam as much furniture as possible into the middle area of their miniature space. Architects advise rational thinking: light objects should not insistently contrast with heavy ones. In

EXCESSIVE ORNAMENTS Any home has an abundance of “stuff” mountains of soft toys, a succession of figurines, thousands of photographs and many other knickknacks. The more of them you keep in the room the smaller it looks and feels. We are not living in a fairy-tale palace; therefore remove what you don’t need. This approach will solve several problems at once: not only will you get rid of extra dust collectors but will visually enhance the room. Keep a few favourite ornaments on shelves or stands. The main consideration like in all other aspects of interior decoration is to make it pleasing to both your eye and your heart.

TILE AND WOOD Hexagonal tiles create an effect of being spilled over the wooden floor and generate a weightless and a bit “northern” atmosphere. This floor will be a practical solution to the problem of easily soiled dining spaces because tiles are easy to maintain.

Updating your interior décor does not necessarily mean renovations. The floor sets the mood to the room; changing the floor covering may turn out to be the only step necessary to radically transform the look of the place.

In combination with white walls this floor creates a relaxing atmosphere by carrying your thoughts to emerald lagoons and shady beaches. Such covering will go well with dark or black walls as well, especially in an apartment or a house decorated in a vintage style.

This is an extensive library of colour palettes. There are three reasons to pay attention to this application. First one is when you are in search of inspiration and harmonious colours for your new home. Second is if you have been trying for a very long time to figure out what something like a “brilliant orange-yellow” colour means. And the third reason is that you have a photograph of the colour in which you want to paint the walls of your bedroom but you know neither its name nor number and, therefore, cannot explain your wishes to the paint counter assistant. If at least one of these points applies to you download Color Schemer. No matter how tricky is your request the search yields all the colors along their respective tags. They come as ready palettes consisting of five rectangles of matching colours. Leafing through these palettes is a pleasure in itself. Sooner or later the eye will rest on the most suitable one. The app also gives you a chance to create your own palettes and save them for the future. The choice is yours!

Roses de Tuscia Today we will focus on the elegant dining set Roses de Tuscia (Rosa Toussaint) by Robert Haviland & C.Parlon. Limoges porcelain is considered to be the whitest and most delicate of all. The objects fashioned out of it are full of elegance and unique French style. Craftsmen who hand paint each piece always leave undecorated space in order to enhance the beauty of the ceramic itself.

The history of the creation of Roses de Tuscia set is incredibly romantic. The author of the design – a famous American artist known only as Nall - was intrigued by the idea of a wedding registry. “It’s so elegant and beautiful to choose a gift ideally suited for a certain couple!” This was how the dining set was born; the artist depicted fragments of the life story of an ordinary rose from birth to death and then on to rebirth on different pieces of the set. He gave the

newly created set to his wife Toussaint. “I gave my beloved a whole bunch of roses! And it was also the life of a single flower: a newborn rosebud on a bread plate turned into a gorgeous full-blown flower on a salad/soup plate. Then on the dessert plate the rose died, and its gold tears served as a symbol of sadness— This sadness was fleeting because on the teacup I painted a rose hip, which was the symbol of the new beginning! And as a finishing touch to the portrait of a flower I painted a rose thorn on a coffee cup — “ The artist personally signed each piece. Now, years later, each plate and cup of this set remain a unique work of art. Roses de Tuscia set has been exhibited at the Palais de Bagatelle in Neuilly, at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, and at international ceramic exhibitions in Stuttgart and New York.

The Cutting Board The variety of cutting boards on the market is mind-boggling. Various materials, colours, and designs make it hard to select. Let’s look into each variety and decide what suits us most.

Wooden Boards. Professional chefs prefer this kind to any other. These boards are healthy, stable and do not dull the sharp knife edge. Nevertheless, many of today’s cooks decide against wooden cutting boards due to their high cost and the wood’s susceptibility to losing shape when affected by moisture. Besides, there is no way to avoid cracks formation on the wooden board surface, which is hygienically unsafe. Of course some simple measures like rinsing the cutting board with boiling water and having a separate board for raw meat and fish products will eliminate the risk. The

right choice will define the lifespan of your cutting board. In the store, check the board you are considering for the smallest signs of cracking – even a tiny crack along the wood grain will inevitably become wider and deeper in time and will eventually cause the board to break. Discard boards that seem to be out of shape – this is a sure sign of problems with the manufacturing process.

Plastic Boards. Plastic cutting boards have lately become the most popular. Their advantages are durability, light weight, ease of care, and low cost. Manufacturers cover plastic with a special compound that prevents the board from sliding on the countertop during food preparation. This compound also prevents scratching of the board surface. The disadvantage is that, unlike other types of cutting boards, the plastic ones cannot double as trivets. There used to exist another drawback – their instability on the counter or tabletop but lately many brands of plastic cutting boards have been coming with small bumps on

FOR ADVERTISEMENTS CALL (416) 477-6107

the bottom that serve as stabilizing legs. Make sure that the board you intend to buy is made of food-grade plastic – this will be indicated on the label. If there is no information to this effect on the label do not purchase.

Glass Ceramic Boards. Cutting boards made of impact-resistant glass seem to be ideal. Their surface is not subjected to damage during use, they are heat proof, easy to wash, and do not absorb odours. Besides, they look gorgeous, and the variety of their designs allows choosing the one consistent with your kitchen decor. Unfortunately, this is what most of them become - a decor element. Domestic cooks stop using them pretty fast after purchase because a glass ceramic board will quickly dull your knives. Besides, the scraping sounds when cutting on this type of board may drive you crazy. Yet, for some kinds of kitchen jobs they are indispensible – for example, a glass board is the best for cutting fish because it does not absorb odours.

Even though wall-hung toilets have long stopped been a novelty, most people consistently prefer traditional floor models thinking that the other style is nothing but a headache because their disadvantages clearly overweigh their advantages. Nevertheless the latter are aplenty.

WALL-HUNG TOILETS – PROS AND CONS

SPACE SAVING

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

EASE OF CLEANING

One of the main advantages of a wall-hung toilet is that it saves space. It is ideal for small bathrooms. They also make the room look much more interesting.

Another significant advantage is the possibility to choose the height at which the toilet should be installed according to the owner’s needs.

The absence of a tank has a positive effect on the décor. Wall-hung toilets are easy to clean. Because they are attached to the wall, you can safely mop the floor underneath them without having to bend or squat.

THE TANK The tank of the wall-hung toilet is concealed inside the wall. This has both positive and negative points. Even though such a toilet looks elegant and luxurious its installation requires extra effort of disassembling the wall.

INSTALLATION DIFFICULTIES First of all, a wall-hung toilet needs a special support to prevent damage to the wall. The fastening hardware may eventually become loose due to the constant pressure; monitor it regularly.

REPAIR DIFFICULTIES Some models of wall-hung toilets include a panel that provides access to the wall, which greatly facilitates its repairs. Yet in the case of the ones that do not boast such a function the wall has to be disassembled and then restored.

ADVANCED FEATURES Most wall-hung toilets possess many advanced features - such as an automatic cover, a built-in dryer, lighting, etc. While they definitely provide extra comfort they also increase the potential risk of additional repairs.

PRICE Since a wall-hung toilet is considered a luxury item it is more expensive than a traditional one.

JELLYFISH AQUARIUM – Simple and Easy to Maintain Fans of aquaria rejoice! A fish tank can now be installed anywhere, even at your work station in the office, and you will not have to go into trouble of cleaning it. Moreover, it will not cause that specific smell that may upset your colleagues and superiors. And this aquarium can house jellyfish! LED Desktop Jellyfish Tank is a unique aquarium created by designer Alex endonym (Alex Endon) specifically for jellyfish. Since these creatures normally die in regular tanks Endon provided a number of conditions to avoid such a dismal ending. Keeping jellyfish in an ordinary aquarium is impossible for one simple reason: they get sucked into the water filtration system. Endon used a special air pump that made it possible to avoid this problem. The aquarium is 43 cm high, 38 cm long and 8 cm wide. Its capacity is five litres. The body is made of acrylic. It has a special opening for feeding its inhabitants. The aquarium comes complete with an air pump, check valve, substrate and a hydrometer. The colour of the built-in LED lighting can be altered remotely. The aquarium is designed to house five small jellyfish whose life expectancy in LED

Desktop Jellyfish Tank will be two to three years. Of course, this unusual aquarium can be used to house other water creatures but take into account that it has a round shape

with a circular water movement, and for many species of fish and even plants it is not comfortable at all.

FAST, EASY AND BRILLIANT

EVERYDAY TIPS AND TRICKS Today, due to our extreme busyness it gets ever harder to find time for cleaning and solving even simplest everyday problems. SCRATCHES ON WOOD FURNITURE A walnut will help hide scratches and scuffs on wood furniture. Just rub a half of a shelled walnut on the problem spot, and the pulp will hide scratches.

SCUM WILL NOT ESCAPE Too busy to stand over the broth coming to the boil but not want to be bothered cleaning the stove after the scum has escaped? Just place a wooden spatula across

the top of the pan – this will prevent the foam from escaping.

VERTICALLY FOLDED CLOTHING Fold clothes and underwear vertically before storing in drawers. This way you will not have to go through the whole stack to find the right shirt that can easily be hiding at the very bottom.

REPAIRING LEATHER UPHOLSTERY Want to disguise scuffs on your favorite old leather chair or sofa? Shoe polish is the perfect remedy for scratches and scuffs. Be sure to let it dry!

BROKEN GLASS Smithereens of a broken glass on white tile are extremely difficult to clean. Press a slice

of toaster bread to the floor to pick them up. If no toaster bread is available, use the soft part of the regular one or even a piece of soft dough.

DISINFECTING IN THE MICROWAVE A microwave oven is a multifunctional device: in addition to its main use, engage it for ridding your sponges and plastic cutting boards from germs and odors. Microwave for a couple of minutes on high.

CHALK FOR GREASE STAINS Rub crumbled chalk into a grease stain on fabric, and a few hours later it will fully absorb the grease. Remember that this method is most effective for fresh stains.

HOW MANY POTS AND PANS DOES YOUR KITCHEN NEED? What is the optional number of pots and pans in the kitchen so that you are not inconvenienced by their shortage but your cabinets are not overloaded with unwanted extras? The most popular kitchen set usually consists of five pots, one large skillet, and lids to fit them. Prices vary depending on the make, manufacturing country, and material. So, buying a standard kitchen set you will get: A LARGE STOCKPOT. For a busy woman (and practically every woman, be it a homemaker, a career person, or a self-employed owner of a small business, has her hands full from morning till night) cooking soup for just one meal is not practical. Therefore, preparing a 3-4-litre pot of soup to last for a couple of days is a viable solution. TWO 2-LITRE POTS. They are great for cooking side dishes or warming up that very soup for just one meal instead of warming up all the soup in the large pot over and over again.

against the walls. In cheaper models you will definitely notice some slits in between – use wax paper to cover them and save your oven from spills. A SMALL ONE-HANDLE POT is indispensible for the family with small children, to cook single servings of hot cereals and mashed potatoes, or boil eggs. A LARGE COVERED SKILLET is essential for more serious chefs who sauté and fry often.

Think about a piece or two of ceramic or non-stick bake ware. Non-stick kitchen wares should be high quality lest you have to get rid of them after a few months of use because the Teflon coating peels off of inexpensive pots and pans in a jiffy.

Besides the standard set, you would be happy with one or two smaller frying pans for crepes or omelets for one and a Dutch oven for sautéing dishes on the stovetop or baking them in the oven. For more accomplished cooks ramekins are recommended – buy the number corresponding to your family size.

As far as materials go, try to avoid aluminum or enameled kitchenware – the former is harmful to your health, especially if you want to keep the dish in the same pot it has been cooked; the latter is good until the first chip that will start off the avalanche of peeled enamel. In families with small children kitchenware is more susceptible to damage, so go for stainless steel pots and pans with thick and heavy bottom – they stay attractive for many years and are user-friendly.

If you need bake ware for cakes purchase a spring form. Make sure the bottom is flush
