Editor’s Note

It’s been three years since I entered this notable organization- The Seagull. Like the other awesome wings, I am a living witness of how The Seagull spreads her wings and prepares to fly high and conquer the VAST SPACE in her search for innovations and transformations despite her struggles.

S P A C E as the theme of this issue is a very broad word that denotes a lot of meanings. More than its boundlessness and hollowness, a space can also imply distance, time, area or relationship between entities. Whether we like it or not, we can’t deny the fact that various forms of spaces are invading ourselves and the people encircling us. All featured articles herewith orbit around spaces.

Now, in its 20th year of publishing articles to inspire and educate the Lacsonian community, The Seagull ensures everyone to continue crafting and distributing worthy journalistic-pieces.

The Seagull is published at least twice every semester, by the publication office at John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University – Molo, Inc., Molo, Iloilo City.

About the Cover

Life is impossible in space. But then, LIFE itself is impossible without SPACE – spaces that allow us to breathe; allow us to grasp for what is worthy to be grasped; allow us to contemplate on the things we usually take for granted; allow us to understand the very nature of man.

The cover portrays a woman floating amidst the pitch black space – FREE. TRANQUIL. EMPTY. Man, whose always floating along the gushing rapids of time, needs to pause and think to himself of what matters most. Should man always be filling in the hollow spaces in his life? We say, NO – for there is more to see in spaces other than its emptiness. There are stories encrypted between the spaces, waiting to be unveiled.

This issue of The Seagull defines SPACE in ways no other dictionaries have defined – SPACES that govern man and his fate; SPACES we often overlook, but not anymore.

THE ORCHID FARM. Reconnect yourself to nature and stroll the pathways surrounded by illustrious and attractive flowers. Talon Ecopark brings you the Orchid farm, a wide floral garden of different orchid species such as Dendrobiums and Vandas.

Flowers of unequal beauty bloom within the vicinity of the plantation leaving the sweet scent of nature which could satisfy your deepest sensation. The plants are

well-groomed and well taken care of and as soon as they reach their harvest stage, they are sold to the market. Talon Eco-park’s productions of these variegated flowers come in huge demand in markets within and outside Capiz.

THE MINI ZOO. The park is also a certified advocate of the wildlife reserve protection. Thus, the zoo was built to preserve the diverse ecosystem. It serves as haven for the species of birds like Gania Fowl, Night Heron, White-Bellied Bird, Philippine Eagle, Love Birds, and Pigeons that will surely take your breath away as they flap their magical wings. The 160-meter zip line, almost 20 feet above the ground, will absolutely make you freak out and scream until the very end of the ride. Every ride requires safety gears and equipment as well as other qualifications such as age, weight, and height requirements are also observed.

Talon Adventure Park opens weekly except for Monday with the assistance of the 13 accommodating staff. The park is on its peak during holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays where families and friends can create and share limitless bonding.

ave you checked out what’s new in the “techmarket”? Well, you have probably grabbed the latest gadget to brag with your friends such as iPhone, tablets, iPads, and the like. But let me tell you something. Those devices are quite boring without an internet connection, right?

How many hours do you spend using Facebook? How about Twitter, Instagram, and other social networking sites? I can only guess you’re squandering almost 24 hours reading posts, comments, chatting with friends, and publicizing your newest selfie photos with a hashtag.

Aside from the entertainment that it provides, we can’t deny that these things have also brought convenience to us like easy access of information, faster communication, and information dissemination but these advantages are always coupled with disadvantages too. Many people also try to use this more than its purpose and thus, degrading morality and ethics of humanity.

Since rapid changes have been brought about by technology, the majority was greatly

affected with this mentality of chasing “what’s new” in the techmarket, not just in the country but around the globe.

So don’t be surprised that even your 2-year old brother or sister has been hooked by this.

BABY TECHIE Whether you admit it or not, you can see countless children in malls or next to your seat in a bus and almost everywhere holding their cell phones and tablets playing online games and at the same time, browsing the internet.

There’s nothing wrong with the introduction of technology at an early age however, the cyberworld is such a vast dome, a young child not being able to fully realize the “what is” and “what should be” is vulnerable to getting exposed to undesirable stuffs that can hinder the development of their values and morals.

Children, as we all know, are very inquisitive with what they see or hear, that’s why strict parental guidance is required when they

watch television and surf the internet. Movie and Television Review and Classification Board is a government agency advocating parental guidance.

It covers the theme, language, nudity, sex, violence, horror, and drugs.

Children also get this lazy attitude because their focus is on their “dog-gadgets” (man’s new best friend) chained on their necks. With earphones on, they dance to groovy tracks with lyrics they don’t even understand instead of enjoying Barney and Disney songs.

DISNEY PRINCESS WRECKS OFF “So la da di da di, dancing with Miley, doing whatever we want… and we can’t stop and we won’t stop…” (Sounds familiar?). That’s Miley Cyrus’ new hit song - We can’t stop.

The whole Barclays Center in Brooklyn Borough, NY was shocked and mortified during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) with the jaw dropping performance of Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke where she stripped off from her bear-emblazoned leotard to a provocative outfit shaking her butt and sticking out her tongue.

Miley, in the past years had been an icon to young

kids since she once starred a child-friendly show on Disney, Hannah Montana.

After that performance, Miley was flooded by millions of criticisms from netizens worldwide. Yes! From a Disney Princess to a self-claimed TWERK Queen. After an interview with ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine, she also received harsh comments after her controversial statement praising “weeds” and “molly”.

After making a folly performance, she then made history after the word “twerk” was officially recognized

by Oxford dictionary being defined as, “dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.”

COUNTRY SINGER TURNED TWERKING DIVA Miley can’t be stopped.

Many labelled her as another good-girl-gone-bad celebrity of today because of the way she acts and behaves.

Following her song, “We can’t stop” is another lascivious yet emotional music video dedicated to her fiancé, Liam

Hemsworth - Wrecking ball, which garnered 250, 834, 213 views on Youtube - and still counting. In the beginning of the video, she was wearing a daring outfit holding a hammer, after which she was then swinging with a huge metal ball holding to a chain tied up exposing her nude body.

Liam Hemsworth had been ignoring interviews about their relationship which officially ended last September 16. On twitter, Miley posted that the wedding was called off.

These are just only a fraction of the indecent occurrences on social media and networking sites that children may be exposed to– most of which are but a click away.

BLURRING THE LINES In these instances, several steps should be taken to eradicate these since we can’t afford to show things like these to young minds who knew

nothing - before it blurs the lines. Videos showcasing performances which relate to sex, drugs, and other sensual scenes which contradict to human morals and ethics are indeed threats to children involved in networking.

Technology and social media has really made its way to be classified as one of the human needs. In this case we reject the value of contentment for our continuous crave for things we don’t really need. That is why teenagers of today are being tagged as belonging to the “Generation Z”, being more materialistic and giving more importance to material wealth and earthly possessions and forgetting the essence of Filipino values - values that we must never forget when waves of changes rock us down.

We must remember that morality, what is good and what is right must remain the same - that no twerking diva, nor the techmarket can change. Be ware with every click you make - before it blurs the lines.

T

here is nothing more fulfilling than having been onboard and grasping the joy of reaching your dreams for seafarers like me. I felt nervous, kind of excited for it was the first time that I will be stepping onboard to work for my cadetship.

June 8, 2012- that exact day was very memorable and I can still feel the utmost happiness one could feel while walking onboard M/T Stolt Teal.

I easily adapted to a new environment because my crewmates were all Filipinos.

However, my first vessel will

be dry docking and aside from the fact that I have no experience yet, that would just add to their obligations. There is no cabin left so they decided to transfer me to another vessel.

On July 5, 26 days after I set foot to M/T Stolt Teal, I was transferred to M/T Stolt Skua where I spent my life being an Engine Cadet. Although my work was not so easy, I thank God that He has sustained me and it feels great to wake up every day and gain more knowledge. But things didn’t work smoothly as they should,

for challenges tested our strength not just once, but twice.

It was December 5, 2012 at almost 3 p.m. and we were on our coffee break. My fitter and I were combining the gear on the gearbox of the lathe machine. Because it was break time, we were called to have our coffee and for the third call, I bid goodbye to my fitter and went up to the control room.

After a few minutes, we heard our fitter shout “Who turned on the lathe machine!?” while holding his bleeding

hand. We noticed that his left thumb was missing but we didn’t panic. I walked down to the workshop and saw his left thumb under the lathe machine. I felt like vomiting while picking up his finger. I put it on a plastic and placed it on the refrigerator. From that accident, I realized that I should always think of safety first to avoid mistakes. I thought it was the last, but few days, later we met a terrible accident that tested my faith and my strength.

December 20 at 2001H-2056H, we were

channelling at Rotterdam and the vessel was on HalfAhead. While we were going forward, we saw that the bridge was going up but when we were almost near to it, the bridge suddenly went down so we altered our telegraph to full astern. But due to the momentum of our vessel and considering also our cargo which is highly explosive, we can’t easily shift backward.

The bridge was slowly going up, but it was already late and our vessel swung to portside and crashed to the base of the bridge. The impact was strong

and our vessel bumped to the base tearing the vessel’s bulkhead.

Our captain was already shouting for emergency and was ringing the alarm while everyone was already panicking. We were all nervous, especially I who was hugging the post near me because of the great impact.

We were all praying that time and were very uneasy because they saw the side of our vessel sparking, considering that we were carrying a highly explosive cargo in which small spark could trigger an

explosion that would lead us to our last voyage. Luckily, our vessel did not explode and we were all safe though our vessel got minimal damages. I was shocked, and I heard my captain saying that he felt like someone was putting a gun on his head ready to pull the trigger.

Those accidents that we met made me stronger.

From the first time I stepped onboard until I finished my cadetship, I always pray to God and give thanks to Him for giving me another day of my life and lead me away

from danger. All of us may encounter hardships in our lives, but always bear in mind that someday, something good will happen to us.

Finally, I was already holding my flight details ready to go home. As I stepped again on my beloved country, I felt so happy that after a year, I am home again. No words can describe my happiness, and it was the happiest moment in my life because after a long time, I will be together with my family and friends once more.

-permit To permit, The new system was designed for the students to have one venue for fast transaction.

The examination permits are printed using the thermal printer and paper like the ones used by some commercial establishments. We tried to cut down the time in preparing the examination permits a week before the examination and likewise eliminate the long wait in claiming permits. With this enhancement of the system, the examination permit will automatically print upon payment with the cashier. Rest assured that we will be looking for quality thermal paper available in the market. We encourage you however, to take extra care of your receipts for future reference.

or both foreign and local tourists alike, Boracay, El Nido, and Puerto Princesa have always been on the top of their Where-tospend-the-holidays list, just like the usual. Unknowingly, the Pearl of the Orient Seas conceals thousands of hidden gems under its sleeves, from its emerald forestry and tough terrains down to its glistening shores that will capture the hearts of those who seek for adventure or relaxation – or a combination of both. Surprisingly, these undiscovered gems are juvst some treks away- some are even sheathed under the shadows of the famous Boracay, waiting to be uncovered.

WHERE TO GO Famous for Boracay’s powdery white-sand beaches, the province of Aklan is also a cradle to other captivating beaches and resorts. The town of Bel-is, Buruanga is one example as it nests the Why Not Resort, a 3,000 sq. m. beach resort offering various activities for families and adventurers seeking for leisure and recreation.

GOING THERE Just a 5-hour bus ride from Tagbak Terminal, Iloilo to Caticlan terminal in Aklan and a 30-minute tricycle ride from Caticlan terminal to Alegria, Buruanga awaits an adventure all travellers have been seeking for. From there,

a 10-minute pumpboat ride will take you to the other side of the baranggay were a hidden paradise lay, secluded by the rich forestry and stunning rock formations by the shore.

For old people and families with little children on their tails, to travel by sea is a more convenient way to reach the place where few beach resorts are budding.

However, for young couples and adrenaline-packed individuals, the mountains with its rugged terrains and heart-thumping cliffs would be a prelude to the adventures waiting at the resort which will consume more than an hour.

Not to mention the sceneries along the way and the warm welcome from the locals that

await the adventurers who choose to take the road less travelled. Once you take a peek of the dazzling sands and cerulean oceans, you will certainly say it was indeed worth the heart-poundingsweat-soaking hike!

KNOWING THE PLACE The Why Not Resort, owned and managed by the couple Elena Lazzaroni and Luisito Omugtong, is a newly-developed beach resort situated at Brgy. Bel-is, Buruanga, Aklan. Completed and opened last December 2012, this resort offers amenities no other fancy hotels can offer – RELAXATION at its purest. This unknown oceanfront gem is just 30

minutes away from Boracay and is a favorite stop among Germans, Swedish and Filipinos during the months of February up to June and December. Asking about the origin of the resort’s name, Lazzaroni answered “When I came here [Bel-is, Buruanga], I asked myself why not live here, why not maybe we can buy this land, why not we can change our lifestyle that’s why it’s Why Not”. “Para maiba naman bala kay ang iban [other resort names] puro na lang ngalan sang bata,” Omugtong added.

ng kahapon, ngayon, at bawat minutong dumaan kasabay ng ating bawat paggalaw ay maituturing na isang kasaysayan. Subalit hindi lahat ng lumipas ay naisusulat sa libro ng kasaysayan, bagkus yaon lamang mga pangyayari na nakagawa ng tatak sa istorya ng ating lumipas.

Hindi lahat ng pangyayari ay naaalala ng kasalukuyan dahil may batayan ang bawat paggalaw ng tao na siyang magtatantiya kung ito ba ay may kakayahang baguhin ang hinaharap at siyang magiging isang kasaysayan.

Maraming palatandaan sa kabayanihan ng ating mga ninuno ang nananatiling buhay hanggang sa ngayon na siyang nagpapaalala sa atin ng

pinagmulan ng ating kalayaan.

Bagama’t hindi ito nabibigyan ng pansin ng karamihan, ang kasaysayang kanilang naiwan sa atin ay hindi na mabubura pa at mananatiling buhay. Ang kanilang pakikipagbuno upang makamit ang kalayaan ang siyang nagturo sa atin kung ano ang nasyonalismo at siyang nagbigay ng direksiyon patungo sa pagkakaisa nating lahat kahit na hiwalay ang mga isla na bumubuo sa ating bansa.

Isa sa mga naging lundayan ng kasaysayan sa bansa ay ang bayan ng Guimbal na kilala dahil sa kanyang Bantayan Festival.

Ngunit para sa iilang nakakaalam, ito rin ay tahanan ng mga kwento ng kabayanihan na isinasadula ng mga monumento at watchtowers

na naipreserba bilang pamana ng ating mga bayaning ninuno.

Sa pamamagitan nito, maaalala natin ang mga mahahalagang pangyayari sa ating nakaraan upang ating maalala kung ano ang ating pinagmulan.

Pinagmulan ng Guimbal Noong ikalabing-anim na siglo, nag-umpisa ang pagsalakay ng mga Muslim sa mga baybayin ng Kabisayaan kabilang na ang bayan ng Guimbal. Dahil sa takot ng mga katutubo sa muling pagatake ng mga Moro, nagtakda sila ng hudyat upang makapaghanda kung sakaling dumating ang mga Muslim. Sa pamamagitan ng mabilis na paghampas ng tambol na tinawag nilang guimbal,

gimbal o gimba, sila ay mabilis na makakapaghanda ng kanilang depensa bago pa man makarating ang mga Muslim.

Ang Moro Watchtowers Ang Moro Watchtowers ay itinayo noong ikalabimpitong siglo na nagsilbing dungaw upang makapaghanda ang mga katutubo sa pagsalakay ng mga Moro.

Mayroong limang tore na naitayo sa iba’t-ibang parte ng Guimbal ngunit tatlo lamang sa mga ito ang naipreserba ng Department of Tourism. Ang watchtower ay itinayo sa pamamagitan ng polo o ang sapilitang pagpapatrabaho ng mga Kastila sa mga katutubo. Ang Moro Watchtowers ay tinatawag din

| nilang bantayan, na nagpapakita ng pagiging mapagmatyag, katapangan at kabayanihan ng mga ninunong Guimbalanon.

Dahil dito, ipinagdiriwang ng mga Guimbalanon ang Bantayan Festival bilang parangal sa makasaysayang tore ng bantayan.

Roman Catholic Church Kilala ang simbahan ng Romano Katoliko ng Guimbal dahil sa kanyang arkitekturang hango sa mga simbahan sa Espanya. Naitayo ang simbahan gamit ang mga adobe stones o ang tinatawag nilang “Igang” galing sa Sitio Igang ng Barangay Igcocolo at mga batong koral galing sa isla ng Guimaras at sa Barangay Calampitao. Katulad ng tore ng bantayan, ang simbahan ay naitayo sa pamamagitan din ng polo sa utos ng mga paring Espanyol. Bagama’t dalawang beses na nasira ang simbahan dahil sa Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig at sa naganap na lindol noong 1948, nagawa itong maikumpuni at maibalik sa dating anyo kung kaya’t naipreserba ito magpahanggang ngayon.

Ang simbahan ang siyang unang istrukturang bumabati sa mga turista at sa mga taong papasok sa bayan ng Guimbal.

Tinawag nila itong Taytay Tigre dahil sa replika ng dalawang leon na makikita sa magkabilang panig na bumabati at nagbabantay sa mga taong papasok sa tulay.

Nagawang makumpuning muli ang tulay sa tulong ng donasyon galing sa isang beteranong Guimbalanon.

Ang Taytay Tigre ay isa sa mga pinakaunang istrukturang bato na ipinagawa sa bayan ng Guimbal.

weat soaked skin, ears deafened by the uproar of the engine, hands tightly clutched by the vehicle’s haste and buttocks calloused of riding the Skylab for almost two hours. The exhaustion of such ride merely crippled us, but the journey was yet to unfold.

The labyrinth path prolonged the mountainside trek. The sunlight penetrated the amber of the depleted sap from the nearby tree emitting a glittering prism. Cascading waters accompanied the noises of the unseen creatures and the immature leaves carpeting the forest grounds.

From time to time, the view baffled our eyes with the panorama of the limestone carved mountains and the nature which brought an immense feeling.

Isolated from the towering buildings, busy traffic lanes and polluted atmosphere of the city, hides a sanctuary of seven mountain-walled sitios, a place where man and nature co-exist in harmony.

Thirty kilometers away from the town of Bugasong, Antique lies Barangay Igsoro - a picturesque facet secluded by mountain ranges, encompassed by winding steep slopes inclined by 80 degrees and roads cemented by the bulk sediments of the mountain stones.

With the fare that rips their pockets off costing 300

pesos per head, naturally, the locals of Igsoro would seldom go to the town proper to buy their necessities and other important purposes.

Worst is that when you prefer to walk, you’ll consume four hours descending the path heading down the town and lucky to those who get a free offered by the Volvo trucks.

The achingly distance greatly affects their livelihood, health, and education, most of all.

Amidst this striking complexity of living, the amiable people of Igsoro still breathe with aspirations of better future soon or even

sooner. Beyond the innocence of the children is the painful truth that their dreams of becoming professionals someday are dimmed by the distances and financial considerations. Despite this inevitable fact, their parents still struggle to support them with every source available.

It’s not only for the purpose of having a comfortable life but for their children to decline from being alike them – tangled by the chains of ignorance.

The eagerness and enthusiasm paints such glow on the children’s faces as they

strode to Igsoro Elementary School - the only grade school located at the sitio proper. In pursuit for higher education, which all barely and some can’t afford, students have to go down from the mountains, cross several rivers and stay in a boarding house in order to attend high school in Bugasong.

Chrystal Dane Z. Jose, a fourth grade sweet little girl with her timid manners of frequently covering her face cut shortly as she related how much driven she is and why she desires to pursue studying.

“Biskan sa banwa pa ang high school, gusto ko guid mag-iskwela para kabuol ako tig kurso sa kolehiyo. Handum ko dan mag maestra o di gay doktor kay buligan ko sanday mama kag papa. Budlay dan pangabuhi dya.”

They may be fortunate to have vast fertile lands and sustainable fresh water from the mountains’ peak, but unknowledgeable on how to make most out of this abundance, the people of Igsoro had to settle to the least that they can manipulate from the environment itself.

From plowing the farm fields solely with carabao, planting different root crops and keeping domesticated animals such as chickens, cows, and native pigs that stubbornly roam around every nearby house, the people of Igsoro were able to sustain their daily living. They also trade the excess of their harvest in the town proper Bugasong and sell the yield of their crops like cassava, sweet potato, and banana to earn a living but to some extent, still is insufficient.

“Sig ano malang tubas ko nga lima ka sako nga ra, kulang pa ra gani nga inugkunsumo kang akon pamilya,” Brgy.

Kagawad Camilo Manuel said blaming the government’s unsuccessful reform projects.

Aside from the inadequacy of sustaining their needs, they bear the difficulty of having one health center that is far from being medically equipped and a midwife who attentively aid the health of the people. Added to this, is the lack of potable water for the residents to drink which ussualy presumed as the cause

of various illnesses such as stomachache, infections, and diarrhea.

From those tribulations of problems that plague the locals, is a sigh of relief that somehow modernization has invaded their community unlocking a new prospect for the people of Igsoro. Villa Siga, one of its seven sitios, is on its rise for the development of Hydro Power Plant which will supply electricity several years from now. Distinct for its name, the sitio is ironically casted with shadows when the dusk comes. With abundant natural resources, ingenious people remedied it by making

a “sulo” made from the sap of a tree locally known as “salong”, dried twigs and leaves that could light up for the whole night. The residents are now within the reach of communication even if the riverside is the only hotspot of signal.

Before the twilight’s cape totally cloaks the Earth with

somber, the soothing breeze caressed our faces, the aroma of the snoozing mountains engulfed our gasping lungs and the scenery of the nature’s unveiled beauty enthralled our sight. As we trace back the bumpy roads that we once passed by, everything remains vivid in the thresholds of our memory. Indeed, the seven walled sitios with untarnished hopes had foreseen a day of progress where there will be no more churning stomachs, unheard murmurs and shattered dreams.

Every single day makes no less of difference. Bizarre and spacious things cost much to our sight and attention. Thus, we compromise those of less and least of value. To prove, try to clench your fist and have that wholesome feeling maybe.

How hollow those spaces are between your fingers? Random faces will surely flash into your mind and among the few would be really holding you still all throughout the odds of life.

The big question is: WHO ARE THEY? Most probably, the first to pop out in our minds is our FAMILY. The strong family ties mirror the evident stories of OFW’s and seafarers. No matter how many miles and oceans gap them, their calloused hands still long to hold those warmth that can only be found at home.

Not to display a picture-perfect family portrait, undeniably, we

have faced or about to face dreadful crisis at home. At those moments, each member had their tight clasp with each other.

FRIENDS of course are top listed for sure. You can have friends uncountable by your fingers but only few fit into the borders of true comrades.

Sometimes, it’s not an assurance that your friends will always be there. In fact, those you least expect happens to be lending a helping hand when you needed a pick-me-up.

tunay na kahanga-hanga sa utak ng tao ay ang kakayahan nitong lumikha ng mga imahe, maglakbay at gumawa ng mga bagay na salungat sa realidad ng buhay– imahinasyon, malikot at mapaglaro.

Ang naranasan ni Fritz ay maaaring produkto ng imahinasyon. Wala mang sapat na patunay o siyentipikong katibayan para ipaliwanag ang kababalaghang ito, marami pa rin ang kumakapit sa kanilang paniniwala tungkol sa paglaklakbay ng kaluluwa o mas kilala sa tawag na “astral travel” o “astral projection”.

Ang Astral Projection ay isang proseso ng paghihiwalay ng kaluluwa (astral body) mula sa pisikal na katawan kaya tinatawag din itong OBE (Out-of-Body Experience).

Nagkakaroon ng kakayahan ang kaluluwa na maglakbay sa tinatawag na astral plane, isang mahiwagang dimensyon.

Binalot ng kaba at lito si Aling Haydie sa kanyang mga narinig mula sa kanyang pinsan. Kuwento pa niya, imposible daw na hindi niya nakita ang anak na lumabas ng bahay dahil nandiyan lamang siya malapit sa tapat ng kanilang bahay nang mga oras na ‘yon.

HIWAGA SA LIKOD NG ASTRAL PROJECTION Sa pagpapaliwanag ng mga eksperto, normal lamang ang mga ganitong bagay.

Nakadepende rin naman ito sa kagustuhan ng utak. Sa ganitong paraan, mapayapa na nakakapaglakbay at nakakagawa ng anumang bagay ang taong dumaranas ng astral projection.

Ang taong bihasa sa paglalakbay gamit ang isip ay sinasabing nagkakaroon ng kakayahang bumalik at baguhin ang nakaraan o ‘di kaya ay malaman ang

hinaharap at malaman ang past life ng isang tao. Dagdag pa rito, naiiba sa lahat ang sitwasyon ni Fritz nang umagang iyon dahil bihira lamang na mangyari ang makita ka ng mga tao sa pisikal na mundo habang ikaw ay nasa proseso ng astral projection.

Sabi ni Aling Haydie ay tinapik pa si Fritz sa balikat ng kanyang pinsan dahil makulit itong kumakatok sa pintuan.

Nagulat siya nang makita ang bata na nakaangat ang mga paa sa lupa.

ANG LANDAS PABALIK AT PANGIL NG PANGANIB Kahit pwede mong gawin ang astral projection ay hindi dapat sanayin ang sarili na palagi itong ginagawa dahil may pagkakataon na baka hindi ka na makabalik sa pisikal mong katawan at tuluyang mawala sa karimlan.

Ang mga bagay kagaya nito ay hindi dapat gawing libangan, lalo na kung ang sariling buhay na ang nakataya.

Malaki naman ang naging pasasalamat ni Fritz na siya’y muling nakabalik sa kanyang pisikal na katawan. Para sa kanya, ang mga nangyari ay nagsilbing aral na kanyang dadalhin hanggang sa kanyang pagtanda na ang sobrang pagaasam sa mga bagay ay hindi tama. Sa mura niyang edad ay naging matapang siya na sabihin ang kanyang kakaibang karanasan – karanasan na hindi niya makakalimutan at magsisilbing gabay sa pagharap sa kinabukasan.

Bawat isa sa atin ay may kanya-kanyang hangarin sa buhay, maliit man at simple o ‘di kaya ay mga hangarin na umaabot hanggang langit – ambisyon at mga bagay na ating pinapangarap. Kadalasan, atin itong nakikita sa ating mga panaginip (kahit gising) na nagkakatotoo at nagkakaroon ng buhay. Ngunit sa likod ng bawat panaginip ay ang mga nakatagong misteryo na lingid sa ating kaalaman ay may paliwanag o di kaya ay may mensaheng ipinapahiwatig.

Isang halimbawa nito ay ang mga naranasan ni Fritz, 14, isang residente ng Lapuz, Iloilo. Ang tuluyang pagkawala sa kamalayan. Masasabing isa itong estado ng isipan ng isang taong mahimbing sa pagkakatulog kung saan halos lahat ng bahagi ng katawan, pati ang utak ay tahimik na nahihimlay.

T

he day when I arrived at Houston, Texas last May 23, 2012 was a dream come true. At last, my dream to work onboard as an engine cadet was only an inch closer to me. As a new member of the crew, I had no idea on how things work. For instance, how to operate the different machineries. After four months of familiarization, I have already memorized and understood how the system works.

It felt great to do what you have always dreamt to do. But then I realized how hard it was. As months passed by, my homesickness affected the usual things I do and I started missing my family as well as the girl whom I love the most. It hurts a lot, but this should not be a hindrance to give up. Instead, I took them as inspirations to work better and to finish my contract.

November 23, 2012. I was on duty at the gangway near the manifold and I never expected an incident that was bound to happen. One hour before my duty ended, a hose at the manifold suddenly exploded. Without any second thoughts, I immediately ran under the deep tank while covering myself with coverall.

I was very nervous that time because we were loading hazardous cargoes which will endanger my life if it happened to reach me during the explosion. For that, I thank God for saving me from that tragedy.

That hellish tragedy was followed by another unpleasant incident that tested my faith and patience.

It was December 10 of the same year when we were having our insulation on the boiler for inspection. After a day, I was ordered by the 3rd engineer to go inside the boiler and check its carbon content.

I was very confident because he was my look-out but I was wrong. After 30 minutes, I found myself alone and my 3rd engineer was nowhere to

be found. I got nervous and started to call for help not only because of the risk of not having a look-out but also of the thought that the manhole was too small for me to get out of the boiler. The moment I got out, I directly reported to my Chief and Second Engineer everything that happened.

These things made me realize that as an engine cadet, I should possess an attitude of being willing to learn and an attitude of being courageous enough to exercise my right to complain whenever they try to abuse their superiority towards me.

Months later, January 2, 2013, we were on our voyage at Viscay going to Europe. I was on duty together with my 2nd engineer at the engine room. During that time, our engine room was unmanned so there should be someone making a routine check on the machineries. While I was having a routine check, I accidentally bumped on the boiler because of the huge waves which caused our ship to have a rolling movement.

I didn’t feel that the boiler

had already burnt my arm so I continued roaming around the engine room. I only felt that my arm was hurt upon staying in the control room and had my 2nd engineer examine my burn. Right away, he applied first aid to my arm and I wasn’t permitted to do my duty at the engine room for four days.

My most awaited day came after months of sailing from ports to ports of the different parts of the world -June 7, 2013. I finally ended my one year contract as a cadet and I’m almost ready to go home. I’m so happy though a little sadness was tearing my heart because I will part from the people to whom I owe all the things that I’ve learned while I was onboard.

As early as 0800H of that day, I was adviced to leave.

My 3rd engineer woke me up to tell me that they won’t be able to accompany me at the gangway. I was surprised when he cried and suddenly hugged me, saying sorry for all the wrong things that he did. With that, I knew that I have shown a good attitude towards my officers especially to my crying 3rd engineer.

Hours later, I found myself consuming my time watching movies during my 13-hour plane ride after departing from Amsterdam bound to Hong Kong. I was very excited to go home that I haven’t even got the chance to sleep. When I arrived at Hong Kong, my heart started to beat faster because I know that I am going nearer and nearer to my country. After 4 hours, I was astonished with what I have seen – all the people I saw were Filipinos! I’m very thankful to God for guiding me home safely. Now that I’m here studying as a 4th yr. student, I’m still reminiscing all the memories that I have encountered onboard as an engine cadet. Those memories of mine are worthy to be treasured - those where the most wonderful experiences in my life.

Close-to-you-phobia: when every inch means fear

I

magine yourself trapped inside a box with nothing but a pitch black space. Darkness that consumes your sight, having nowhere to go, and no one would save you from shutting down. Nervousness – that’s the next thing you are going to embrace. Would you dare to open your eyes and conquer your fear?

The scenario of being caught up in a four-walledminimal-spaced room set my heart in a rapid beating.

Driving a car on busy streets that traps and sucks you deeper into the traffic jam and being in the middle of a crowd on various social gatherings and parties. Circumstances like these where escaping is far from reach- it makes you feel anxious and all you can do is yell and cry.

Panicking, palpitating, and sweating - these are the signs that you have Claustrophobia an anxiety disorder where you have an extreme irrational fear of having no escape on being in an enclosed space.

According to Medicalnewstoday.com, Claustrophobia is generally the result of an experience in the person’s past (usually during their childhood) that has led them to associate small spaces with the feeling of panic or being in imminent danger. These unforgettable experiences that give them such frightening feelings may be a result of the following: falling into a deep pool and

not being able to swim, being in a crowded area and getting separated from parents, crawling into a hole and getting lost or stuck.

AFFECTING THE LIFESTYLE We cannot deny the fact that we love gazing blissful places particularly if we are at the apex of a towering structure. Of course, the fastest way to reach the top would be through the doors of a tiny-spaced little box known as lift (elevator).

Claustrophobics will not take this way. Rather, they will use the stairs no matter how time-consuming it is. Large room where parties are held upon, loaded up with different individuals would be a place of torment to claustrophobics GOSH! Travelling, may it be by plane or car, becomes difficult or can be impossible. Hence, splendid journeys are turned into terrible nightmare.

TREATING THE ANXIETY Claustrophobia is not an illness – IT IS CURABLE. These following methods are applicable for treating the apprehension: 1. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) - The goal of CBT is to retrain the claustrophobic’s brain to no longer feel threatened by the places they fear. An approach taken may be slowly exposing the patient to small spaces and helping them deal with their fear and anxiety. This is the most common way claustrophobia is treated.

2. Drug Therapy - This type of therapy can help manage the anxiety symptoms, however it does not deal with the problem itself. This, along with the undesired side effects, makes this method far from first choice for treating claustrophobia.

3. Relaxation Exercises - Taking deep breaths,

meditating and doing musclerelaxing exercises are effective in dealing with negative thoughts and anxiety.

4. Alternative/Natural medicine - There are some natural products and homeopathic medicines that some patients say help them manage panic and anxiety.

Treating Claustrophobia is somehow complicated, but the only key to it is EXPOSURE. We have the innate ability to experience less anxiety as we bravely face something that causes our fears to prevail.

If we try to escape from it, we end up increasing the anxiety. Be brave to open your eyes and face whatever that frightens you. Remember, it is your faith that can conquer your fear. Now, give me some space.

alayo ang kanilang agwat sa buhay, maging ang mundong kanilang tinatahak ay naiiba sa nakakarami. Sila ay dalawa lamang sa libo-libong mag aaral na nakaranas ng ganitong sitwasyon. Magkaiba man ang estado sa buhay, sila’y may kanya-kanyang diskarte at paraan ng pagtahak sa buhay.

Talagang kakaiba at kahangahanga ang dalawang mag-aaral na lumaki sa hirap at yaman.

Si Jan Emil B. Biason, 20, tubong Dayhagan, Carles, Iloilo.Lumaki siyang namulat na kailangang magbanat ng mga buto para makaahon sa kakapusan.

Walang kinamulatang mga magulang at tanging si lola Espec niya ang kinamulatan niyang magulang at siyang nagpalaki sa kanya. Kaya nang nagkaroon ng kakayahan upang matulungan ito ay gumawa at naghanap siya ng trabaho. Kahit labag man sa kalooban niya na gawin ay pinagpatuloy parin niyang

Lacson Foundation Maritime University at balang araw ay maging isang marinero.

Pumasok siya bilang working student at swimming varsity upang mabawasan ang matrikulang binabayaran.

Namamalagi siya sa opisina kung saan siya nakatalaga upang maglinis at siya’y utusan. Kung walang pasok

naman, may part-time job siyang mag tutor ng mga baguhang mag-aaral kung paano ang wastong paglangoy. Minsan naman pag wala siyang raket ay naghahanap siya ng mga pweding mapasukan na trabaho upang may mapagkakitaan at para may pangdagdag sa baon. Kung minsan naman, pinapatawag siya ng isang instructor na kanyang pinagsisilbihan upang maglinis sa kanilang bahay.

Sabi nga ni Biason, wala na siyang oras para magliwaliw dahil palaging nasa isip niya ay kung papano siya makakaipon para may pangdagdag sa kanyang natipong pera na gagamitin para sa susunod na araw.

Mula North Baluarte hanggang sa unibersidad ay kanyang nilalakad. Umaalis siya bago pumutok ang liwanag upang hindi na siya sumakay ng jeep para makatipid sa pang araw-araw niyang gastusin.

Lumaki siyang sagana sa buhay. Nabibili niya ang nais at naliliwaliw ang sarili buong araw dahil nga sa estado ng kanilang buhay sa lipunan.

Pero isa lang ang nasabi ni Danilo na wala sa kanya - ang kasiyahan na tanging ang mga mahihirap lang ang nakakaunawa.

Dagdag pa nito,hindi niya naranasang mag-enjoy nang naroroon pa siya sa Central Philippine University (CPU) at nag-aaral sa kursong Commerce. Ngayong dito na siya nag-aaral, napagtanto niya na pwede pa lang mag-enjoy at magsaya kahit walang pera.

“Strive na makaipon kayo, Don’t mind the income,

mind the savings. Parang mga Chinese; hindi sila umaasa sa income. Savings ang kanilang pinapahalagahan kasi kapag matagal ka nang nag-iipon, hindi mo na mamamalayan na malaki na pala ang nasave mo”, mensahe ni Danilo para sa mga mag- aaral na katulad niya, naghahangad na mapaunlad ang sarili at ang kabuhayan.

Magkaibang katayuan sa pag-aaral, ang isa ay kayod ng kayod sa buhay upang mapaganda ang kalagayan, hindi alintana ang hirap at bigat ng krus na pinapasan at isang laki naman sa karangyaan na namulat na kahit sa simpleng mga bagay ay maaaring maging masaya

Magkaibang mundo, iisang hangarin. Iba’t-ibang karanasan, iisang mithiin.

Sadyang mayroong mga karanasan na kailanma’y hindi malilimutan at masusuklian iyon ang mga nagpapatibay sa ating mga adhikain na nais nating makamtan.

Others may quit but the ones who persevere and continue to become champions. A champion rising from the island of Guimaras didn’t quit despite the innate space between him and his dreams.

He bravely conquered the world of track and field and leapt beyond its borders creating a name of his own.

Mr. Rene Herrera, a 5-time gold medalist in the South East Asian Games (SEA Games) and his bravery in conquering the world of athletics and passion for winning, created an athlete who made his countrymen proud- a true blooded Ilonggo, he is.

Just like the others, Rene came from a family with a humble beginning. He used to sell ice candies during municipal and provincial meets which inspired him to become an athlete. Young at that time, he was pretty confident that one day, he can reach his simple dream to join and win the provincial meet. His heart and passion to become an athlete led him to join a boxing event when he was in his first and second year high school though it seemed that boxing wasn’t for him. During one of their P.E. classes, his teacher, Abraham Balibalos discovered his athletic speed and ability and encouraged him to join the track and field - a scenario that marked the start of his running career.

And instead of taking care of the equipment you are going to use and you are paying for, you are also the ones who destroy it and some are tearing down the cables/connections inside which will lead to the delay of using it because we have to fix it again or request for the defective parts done by the students.
