TS@W I WELCOME
A quote I like to keep in mind comes from a noted business speaker Brian Tracy: “Winners make a habit of manufacturing their own positive expectations in advance of the event.” Winners are dedicated. They are committed, and they work hard. We have many, many winners associated with The Shops at Wailea. Take, for example, our marketing agency, Gilbert & Associates. It’s not perched atop a glimmering mirrored tower in Honolulu. It’s a boutique business, located in a modest building in Kahului, Maui. It is the 10th largest agency in Hawaii, and one of the finest. This magazine is produced by Morris Visitor Publications, which produces Where magazines and Guestbooks in over 64 markets worldwide, as well as award-winning custom publications like Wailea magazine. As for The Shops at Wailea, it is a superb collection of retail, dining and special services on Maui. Our collection of world-class realtors specializing in Maui property is unparalleled. I couldn’t do my job without my team of winners. You know where I’m going with this. … If you’re reading this, you are either here or on your way here, and that makes you … a winner! Welcome to Wailea.

Peter Max on Maui Inga Hakan, Governor Neil Abercrombie and gallery owner David Hakan pose with “Flag of Hawaii” painting by Peter Max.
H
awaii Governor Neil Abercrombie was presented with an original Peter Max painting on February 9, 2012, as part of the muchanticipated festivities for the grand opening of The Art of Peter Max Gallery. The 20”-by-16” acrylic, “Flag of Hawaii,” is dedicated thusly: “To Governor Abercrombie and the beautiful state of Hawaii. Aloha! Love, Max 2012.” A traditional Hawaiian blessing preceded the presentation ceremony. The Art of Peter Max Gallery at The Shops at Wailea is one of only two in the world exclusively dedicated to the artwork of the renowned artist.
Max has been called a pop icon, neo fauvist, abstract expressionist and America’s “Painter Laureate.” His career spanning five decades, Max has painted for various heads of state, including six U.S. presidents, as well as countless screen celebrities and music icons. “Peter Max’s striking use of color and versatility of work has been a force in the art world for years,” said Governor Abercrombie. “His work is a reflection of the contemporary world and several of his pieces reflect the vitality of the aloha spirit.”
Gallery director Sara Hakan unveils “Flag of Hawaii” for Governor Abercrombie.
Star Quality Every June, the resort enclave of Wailea transforms into a buzzing locale filled with glitz and glamour as the red carpet rolls out for the Maui Film Festival at Wailea. (This year it’s from June 13-17.) The “Sundance of the Pacific” has showcased the best in independent and international cinema for the past 11 years, attracting movie stars, filmmakers and directors from all over the world. “There’s definitely something going on in Wailea for those five days.” says Barry Rivers, the festival’s founder. “You feel the energy in the air.” Past festival attendees include luminaries such as the Dalai Lama, Dennis Quaid, Clint Eastwood, Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Claire Danes, and Peter Fonda. Rivers adds, “We infused the event with a sense of place. ...The place that we are lucky enough to do this thing is such a stunning and beautiful location, it [sets] itself apart from any other festival for that reason alone.” 10 T H E S H O P S AT WA I L E A I S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2012

hat a rectangular piece of cloth could have so many uses is a testament to the imagination. Need a beach wrap? Reach for a pareo. Looking for a tablecloth? Spread one out. Need a splash of color on that forlorn-looking wall? Choose a pattern that brings the ocean or forest into your home.
All TieD Up — FiVe WAYS To WeAR A pAReo • Wrap a pareo around your waist and tie the ends to make a skirt. • Drape it lengthwise across your back and under your arms. Criss-cross the ends at your throat, and tie them behind your neck. Voila! You’re wearing a sarong dress. • Fold the fabric into halves and tie the two top corners together. Repeat with
the bottom corners. Slip your arms through the two large holes of a butterfly jacket. Tie an additional knot in the center of the back, and create a starburst. • Tie the pareo under your arms, center front, widthwise. Bring the other end of the fabric to the waist, under your legs, tie the ends, and you’re wearing a jumpsuit. • Drape it on your shoulders; it’s a shawl. Pareos can be found at ABC Stores, T-Shirt Factory, Whaler’s General Store and Maui Water Wear.

rule of thumb when buying art is: go only to a reputable dealer. With five locations (two on Maui, one on Hawaii Island and two on the mainland) and 36 years in business, Lahaina Galleries is surely doing something right. Kim von Tempsky, VP of Marketing for Lahaina Galleries on Maui, attributes the success of the locally run galleries to the respect and honor shown to art and artists by the owners Tropical Wonder of the company, Jim and Nancy Killett. “They by Darrell Hill laid down a strong foundation based on being
honorable and having integrity. As a result, we have appealed to many artists and are able to represent probably the best profile of artists in the state of Hawaii. The atmosphere suits von Tempsky as well: he signed on with the Killetts 22 years ago and has been with the team ever since. The interior of Lahaina Galleries at The Shops at Wailea is graced with original works by the likes of the late sculptor Frederick Hart, painter Hisashi Otsuka, and modern master Dario Campanile, to name just a few.
