4. Empathy in Parenting Showing empathy involves under Noel McDermott is a Psychotherapist Build Strong Mental Health In Your Children
Growing up is hard at the best of times and the last few years have made it even more chal lenging for young people. Men tal health is just as important as physical health and one of a par ent’s key roles is to support their child’s mental wellbeing. Here psychotherapist Noel McDer mott offers the following top 10 tips on helping kids open up and improve communication.
3. Validate feelings Normalise your child’s emotions, all emotions are okay to have and the more we talk about them the more it validates this. It’s okay to feel sad and down, explain to your child that we all have moments when we feel we want to cry and that grown-ups cry too!
The Source FAMILY12
Children have a heap of emo tions floating around their heads which are often hard to process, and this can make them emo tional without knowing why, such as hunger, anger, sadness, jealousy, and tiredness. As a par ent you can make this easier by helping them identify how they are feeling and why this might be, this in turn will help them or ganise their thoughts and normal ise them.
2. Identify emotions
1. Listen to their opinions
10 Conversations To
By asking your children questions you will teach them that their thoughts and voices are valued and that their opinion matters, meaning they are more likely to come to you if something is bothering them.
Noel McDermott is a Psycho therapist with over 25 years’ ex perience in health, social care, and education. He has created unique, mental health servic es in the independent sector.
8. DOSE up your life Close on the heels of fun is healthy, is understanding how we can give ourselves positive hormonal boosts d-opamine (rewards prosocial activ ities improves motivation) o-xytocin makes you feel loved up after a cud dle, s-erotonin improves mood after getting some sun or having a walk in the park, endorphins make you feel great after strenuous activities such as a game of footie. Kids love getting this sort of knowledge and maybe if they are younger, you can do a hor mone treasure map for example showing how and where in home and the local area they can get their fix of each hormone.
6. Open up real life serious conversations Look for opportunities to stimulate conversation based upon what is happening in the world around you as the UK and the world is going though significant challenges which could be weighing on your child’s mind such as the costof-living crisis, the Ukraine war, energy problems, travel woes, political turmoil. All these real-world issues provide great opportunities to put into practice psycho logical skills, they provoke stress responses and the bet ter we are at recognising and managing stress the better our lives will be globally.
9. PHSE learning at home What is PSHE covering at school, and can you take up some of the themes at home? The school your child attends have duties to their emotional health and wellbeing and the best way for any of us to learn is by repetition. So, look at what is being covered there regarding psy chological health and wellbeing and continue the conversation at home to enrich the message.
Noel’s company offer at-home mental health careand will source, identify and co-ordinate personalised care teams for the individual.The
“It’s impor tant we don’t try and do the emotional and psychological work for our kids but encourage them to develop the internal resources they need for life to manage psychological distress effectively and healthily. Teaching a core set of psycho logical skills will equip your kids better than if you solve their problems for them: active lis tening, emotional intelligence, validation and strong self-es teem, empathy with others, seeing the bigger picture by be ing mindful in life are a great set of skills to develop.”
standing what your child is going through and quite sim ply, life is easier for children if they are shown the kindness and compassion they deserve. Children who grow up with kind and loving parents will truly develop empathy them selves. So, make the time to check in with your child, open up the conversation and give them the chance to connect with you, this way if some thing is troubling them, they are more likely to talk to you.
7. Healthy is happy and happy is healthy Plan activities with your kids of course but also use it as an oppor tunity to show them how being psychologically healthy is the same as having fun! Wellbeing psycholog ically is no more complex than do ing stuff we enjoy such as having a run around the park, helping your kids understand this simple fact is a great gift.
The key to all health and well being is learning about it then doing it in real life, like if you go to the gym, learn how to use the equipment then use it reg ularly! It’s the same with psy chological fitness ‘equipment’, learn how to use the skills then drop them into family’s life and use them every day.
10. Learn mindfulness Mindfulness teaches kids emotional resilience and helps them find the strength to deal with their emo tions and manage them. Being mindful means greater well being, more positive emotion, and less anxiety and negative emotion. Teach your children simple breathing techniques, work with them to understand the simple power of taking long, slow, and deep breaths, a valuable self-management tool for Noellife.comments:

Money-saving tips for the everyday modern driver
The Source FAMILY16
Looking after your car, truck, or motorbike should be approached in the same way as looking after your body – feeding it with the correct products will yield greater benefits over time and reduce maintenance and repair frequency.
Therefore, drivers need to ensure that their machinery is taken care of with the proper lubrication and engine oils – so that over time the wear and tear of the critical parts don’t fail. By investing in the right products, drivers can ensure greater fuel economy, stronger heat protection, and a longer lifespan for their engine›s critical parts. You get what you give... Neglecting to fuel your body with the vital nutrients its needs doesn’t get you very far over time – the same is true for your vehicles. Drivers need to ensure they are taking care of their machinery with the right kinds of oils that allow the engine to work at maximum capacity with ease. In the long run, this will save car owners money on unnecessary maintenance costs that come from overuse and general wear and tear. Carefully select
As technology and cars evolve, we need to be able to rely on the vehicles that play such a big and vital part in our everyday lives. This means that we must have products and solutions that not only keep our machines in good health but also provide benefits in the long run. Motorists are also searching for solutions that are more sustainable as we work together to help build a healthier planet. As drivers become more conscious of spending, they are looking to take matters into their own hands to find more ways to live cost-effectively, and this includes all things related to driving and vehicle maintenance.
Consider the kind of engine you have There are so many engine oils on the market, it seems like a daunting task for many to know which is the right one to choose – especially when you might not know much about engine care. Many manufacturers will have a recommendation tool on their website to point you in the right direction and find the best product for your specific vehicle. This will take into consideration if you have a car, truck, motorbike, or even agricultural equipment. Now, with modern-day cars, there are so many different kinds, from old to new engines, to hybrid, electric, and automatic transmissions. Each of these has its own specific needs in which their specially formulated lubricants will work hard to protect their unique Takemechanics.electric engines for example; for these vehicles engine oils need to deliver efficient electrical energy, whilst also targeting friction management of the driveline system. The same goes for automatic transmission systems, which have a far higher pressure on the vital parts of the engine that are not automotive. For larger heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and commercial vehicles; high engine temperatures, oxidation, and deposits are common issues, so a lubricant that specifically targets these focus areas is of the utmost importance as they often carry heavy loads and face harsh road conditions. These kinds of lubricants should extend drain intervals, minimise wear, reduce unplanned downtime, and ultimately ensures complete operational flexibility. Older cars can still reach maximum performance through the development of modern lubricants, which draw on the original oil specifications from the Bymanufacturer.usingthemost appropriate additives and the most advanced technologies to ensure the protection of older engines against wear and tear, modern lubricants can enable top-class, efficient performances from older cars. This ultimately prolongs their lifespan and delays highly pollutive disposal processes. So, there you have it, small but simple steps to save money in the long run! Drivers need to be smarter about their vehicle care to be more cost-efficient. There are so many tools are your disposal to make choosing the right lubricant a less daunting task. Small adjustments, like taking the time to ensure proper maintenance, will result in long-term
The price is right Don’t immediately look to save money in selecting the cheapest engine oil on the market. Often, the lowerpriced options produce harmful deposits in the engine and will cause more harm than good. Imagine eating fast food for a year rather than delicious fresh vegetables and highquality protein. The latter is so much better for your physical and gut health and the same goes for your car. Modern engines are now operating at higher temperatures than ever before. The constant startstop of short journeys and traffic means that the engine is constantly put under stress. This excessive heat doesn’t show up on your dashboard gauge – it’s a silent problem, deep in the engine. Lubricants play a critical part in transferring that heat away, and it’s under constant attack, causing loss of performance and damaging critical components through devastating metal-on-metal wear.
TOPbenefits.TIPS The Source FAMILY 17
the right lubricant as engine care is vital for the healthy running of machines that run our everyday lives. The knowledge about the correct kinds of products should be something that consumers should be aware of.
High-quality lubricants have the best formulation and don’t allow the build-up of sticky ‘sludge’ caused by oil degradation that ruins the engine – meaning mechanical parts can move smoothly, reduce friction, and keep the engine running cool. This is the best way to keep those dashboard signals at bay. By opting for high-quality motor oil, drivers will not only ensure a consistent high performance of their vehicle over time, but it will also save on fuel consumption. Results can be immediate when it comes to saving those pennies!

How many people do you know who have experienced a tyre puncture? It’s a common issue for road users from nails on the road to the problems caused by potholes. Before setting off on a long car ride, always check for any type of puncture and listen to the sound from the tyres when they get moving. Less is more when packing the car It can be easy to get carried away packing every piece of clothing for a trip, but less is more when loading up the car. Heavy lug gage can increase added pressure to tyres, combined with the warm weather, it can de flate them quite quickly.
“It’s vital for road users to regularly check their tyre pressure and look out for punctures before embarking on a journey.
The holiday car rental experts at StressFreeCarRental.com are urging people to check the conditions of their car to prevent serious conse quences from occurring. Warmer conditions can lead to heat ed air expanding inside the tyres, which ultimately leads to increased pressure on tyres and potentially destroy a tyre.
Steer from potholes Keep an eye on the road as pot holes can create issues such as tread separation and punctures which can lead to a blowout. Be mindful of other drivers and stay sensible when avoiding them.
The warmer conditions can make pressure in tyres increase by 1 to 2 psi for every change 10°C. Keep on top of checking the pressure, as the large increase in tyre air pressure can cause them to ex plore. As an 18th century encyclopae dic record of Egyptian archaeol ogy, natural history, and politics, the Description of Egypt was re searched and produced during Na poleon Bonaparte’s military inva sion of Egypt between 1798-1801. At the time, the encyclopaedia was created by a team compris ing hundreds of scholars, artists, sculptors, and other related spe cialists accompanying the military expedition. In France, Descrip tion of Egypt was made in 34 vol umes, the first came out in 1809, with continued production until releasing the last volume in 1829. Okinawa, the chain of islands in the far south of Japan, is blessed with warm waters that are a great place for beginner divers. Combined with ex ceptional clarity and a wide variety of marine life, it’s one of the most loved places for underwater exploration in the country. The 20 islands that make up the Kerama archipelago, 40km to the southwest of the main Okinawa Island, are easily accessible by boat from Naha, the prefecture’s principal city. The journey takes around 35-60 minutes by high-speed boat, but it’s also worth overnighting in Kerama. Almost 100 dive sites and incredibly clear waters here mean that you’re guaranteed to see plenty, whether you choose to dive deep or merely snorkel on the surface. The Akajima Marine Science Laboratory has recorded 248 species of coral in the waters of Kera ma, more than 60% of the total found in Japan. Panasonic Launches Green Ambience Changer
The Next Generation Ultra-Fine Mist System for Cooler Outdoor Spaces
NEW PRODUCT ALERT The Source FAMILY48
Since the Silky Fine Mist tend to float around in the air, the Pana sonic Green AC is also suitable for creating interesting spaces and adding aesthetic staging effects to various enter tainment productions such as concerts and stage shows.
Each Panasonic Green AC Flex set con sists of a two-fluid nozzle for emitting the mist, and a sprayer with a built-in control panel and drive unit. Besides allowing for direct connection to drinking tap water, it also supports operation using an external water tank for places where it is difficult to lay water supply pipes, such as out door event venues.
Panasonic has announced the Middle East launch of the Green Ambience Changer, an environmentally-friend ly mist system designed for outdoor environments. Featuring the brand’s proprietary two-fluid nozzle, the Panasonic Green AC generates ul tra-fine mist (Silky Fine Mist) to bring down outdoor temperature from 4 to 7 degrees Celsius through evapo rative cooling, depending upon how the nozzles are installed as well as other external factors such as wind direction, shade, etc. It also removes heat from the skin through the same mechanism as sweating. In addition, this innovative mist system consumes 70 percent less energy compared to conventional two-fluid systems, while boasting easy installation fea tures within existing outdoor struc tures due to its compact and flexible Thedesign.Panasonic Green AC uses com pressed high-speed airflow to mix with water to generate Silky Fine Mist with a particle size of around 6㎛. The ultra-fine dry mist is said to enable the Green AC to emit sufficient parti cles to cool an outdoor area of about 1.6m in distance. Compared to con ventional cooling mist systems, the Silky Fine Mist easily evaporates and thus does not feel wet to the touch even when in direct contact.
“Silky Fine Mist is a brand-new technol ogy that is a step ahead of conventional mist. It is light and can drift away easily, so the Green AC can be used as an inven tive performance tool, suitable to create more excitement in designing events and entertainment shows. It works very well with projection mapping and can be used to diffuse light to flood an entire space in color and projecting beams of light to create high-quality images with a three-dimensional effect. Compared to regular smoke which uses a special agent, the mist is clean and harmless to the human body, thus the light dispersed by the mist and the coolness from the evaporating mist will create an immer sive sensation like never before,” Mr. Kaneko further revealed.
“Soaring temperatures and high humidity are common occurrenc es across the region, more so dur ing summer when the sweltering heat makes it nearly impossible to stay outdoor. Panasonic set out to develop the Green AC to offer an environmentally-friendly solution that makes spending time outside cooler and comfortable in the eve nings of the hottest days,” said Mr. Hidetoshi Kaneko - Director and Division Head - System Solutions & Communications Division, PMMAF.
“Its unique two-fluid mist nozzle, which generates an ultra-fine mist, emits less heat and can cool more efficiently making the Green AC an ideal outdoor cooling solution not only in restaurants and dining areas but in other public and commercial environments, such as malls, re sorts, gardens, sports venues and public transportation waiting are as,” he added.

It’s a simple way to alleviate any unnecessary anxieties or to seek advice if needed.
Another important part of being independent at school is being able to use the toilet independently, including washing and drying their hands. It will also be helpful if they are able to blow their nose on a tissue and put it in the bin.
The period before a child starts school for the first time can be an anxious time for parents. We have put together the following information as a simple guide to how you can best prepare your child for this exciting time in their lives!
We know that parents can have a huge impact on their child’s talking and listening development and the summer is a perfect time for trying out simple language boosting activities:
Listening and Attention Skills
Your child will be given many spoken instructions throughout the school day and will need to be able to shift their attention from what they are doing to listening to what the teacher is saying.
Children in reception (FS2) will also have access to an outdoor space throughout the day, so being able to put their coat on and zip it up independently will really help them-as will being able to put on a pair of shoes or taking off their jumper when they get hot. It also means that they can get straight to their playing and learning without having to stop and ask an adult for help!
Communication and Language
Preparing Your Child for School A Guide for Parents and Guardians…
Yourabilities.child may be starting school with identified communication difficulties, or you may have concerns that have not yet been addressed. An easy way to check out concerns is by using the ICAN ‘Progress Checker’. This is an online tool which allows parents to look at what is expected in terms of talking, listening and understanding language for their child’s age range.
A lovely activity to promote this is to go on a ‘listening walk’ where your child listens for all the sounds around them in the park or town centre. You could also jot down all the sounds your child notices and talk about these back at home to retell the journey based on the sounds they heard.
Examples include being able to dress and undress independently, as this will really help with PE sessions. Learning to tie shoelaces can be tricky, so provide opportunities to practise this skill and also explore different types of fastenings, for example Velcro.
Your child will also really benefit from having experienced being away from you for short periods of time, such as going to a friend’s house to play. This will really develop their confidence and independence and stand them in good stead when it comes to saying goodbye on that first morning at school. Social Skills
During the play date, you can model useful social phrases such as ‘my turn please’ or ‘let’s share’ and join in with pretend play to start the game off and then fade out as children get into character.
Being able to interact appropriately with other children and share resources is a key skill that will help your child when they start school. Play dates with other children will help to promote these skills and you could arrange these with future classmates if possible.
Many parents worry if their child will be able to tell the teacher if they need something or if they will make friends. Good communication skills underpin these
Promoting Independence Your child will really benefit from being as independent as possible when they start school. Of course teaching staff will always be on hand to help, but children feel a real sense of achievement when they can accomplish things by themselves!
Having lunch independently may also be new to your child. If they will be having hot dinners, practise using a knife, fork and spoon. If they are taking a packed lunch, practise opening the packets and containers of food they will be taking. Encourage them to help choose and make their lunches. Maybe they could use their new school lunchbox and water bottle when you go for a picnic in the park? This would enable them to practise opening their food and learn about their likes/dislikes and suitable items for school lunches.

Summer days are perfect for creating a photo journal of activities. Your child can then organise pictures into the correct sequence and retell the story in their own way. You can model important concept words like ‘first’, ‘last’, ‘next’, ‘before’ and ‘after’, and the correct use of past, present and future tenses of verbs, which typically will not yet be fully developed.
Reading and Writing
Sharing songs and books is a really good way to support this. You could also say the sounds that letters make, along with their names as you come across them day-to-day.
Encourage your child to develop an interest in books and other forms of text, for example comics, postcards, labels and posters. You could visit your local library and encourage your child to choose books they would like to listen to and look at. Read with your child and discuss what you have read, for example, ask what they liked about it. Consider reading books about ‘starting school’ with your child. Use these to discuss all the fun activities they will be doing at school.
Shape, Size and Quantity You could go on a shape hunt to see how many circles, squares, rectangles and triangles your child can find, for example square windows, circular plates, and rectangular posters. You could look for patterns too. Talk about the shape and size of objects, e.g. big car, little car, round ball, square table, rectangular book and ask your child questions such as ‘Can you pass me the biggest box?’, or ‘Which one is the smallest shoe?’. Play with blocks and encourage your child to think about size, colour and shape. Also play with containers and ask, ‘How many socks can you fit in the box?’, ‘Which container holds the most, or the least, sand/water?’, etc.
Number Recognition A number hunt is a fun way to look for numerals on doors, on clocks, buses, cars, signs, at home, at the shops or on TV. You could also play ‘I spy’ but with numbers.
Page 2 of 3 The Source FAMILY54
Mathematical Development Counting Verbally and One to One Being able to count verbally to at least 20 will be of great benefit to a child starting school. Practise counting up to 20, and backwards too. One to one counting can also be done incidentally throughout the day, for example counting steps as your child climbs the stairs. You can count anything, for instance how many lampposts are on the street, how many houses have a red door, how many pieces of fruit are in the bowl (and how many did we have yesterday), how many pencils fit in the pencil case, etc. You can also do this when giving things out, for example: “an ice cream for you, an ice cream for Susie and one for me – 1,2,3 ice creams!” Encourage reliable one to one counting by showing your child how to point to each item as they count, or to move the items as they count so they do not count each item more than once. This will help your child understand what numbers mean. Ask them to find the same amount of different items. For example, find 3 spoons, 3 hats or 3 socks. You can also sing counting songs, many of which are available if you search for ‘number rhymes’ on the Twinkl website.
Teachers do not expect children to know their alphabet or be able to write sentences when they start school. A good foundation in sound awareness skills such as rhyming and identifying what sound a word begins with would be helpful.
Outdoor ‘treasure hunts’ work well too. Collecting objects found on walks in the park or on the beach, help introduce new types of vocabulary such as describing words. Treasure can also then be used to create feely bags, where objects have to be described by the way they feel before revealing what the object is.
Vocabulary Development
Classroom instructions often contain several parts for children to remember. A simple game of ‘Simon Says’ during long car journeys this summer could really help. Give your child an instruction to do, like ‘Simon says put your finger on your nose’ and see if they can follow your instruction. The game becomes more difficult as they are only supposed to follow your instructions if you start the sentence with ‘Simon says…’ Can your child listen carefully and only follow the instructions when directed? The game can be made more challenging by building up to instructions with two or three steps, for example ‘Simon says touch your nose, then clap your hands and then put on your hands on your head!’
Narrative Skills Reception (FS2) age children will be encouraged to use language to organise and sequence ideas and events.
Understanding Spoken Instructions
At school, children will be expected to start extending their vocabulary, so it is a good idea to encourage your child to learn and use new words. You could play sorting games when packing a suitcase, as this is a great way to help word categorisation, which is important for vocabulary learning. Items can be sorted into different piles, such as clothing, toys and things for washing ourselves.

• Encourage your child to help you with simple jobs around the home, for example gardening, tidying up, baking and cooking. This will help them to develop coordination and listening skills as well as independence and self-confidence.
visit twinkl.comPage 3 of 3 The Source FAMILY 55
• You could invite a friend to play at your house for a short while. This will hopefully make the settling in process a little easier as they will already have a familiar face in the school or class. This will also help develop their communication and social skills.
• building models with ‘junk’ materials like cardboard boxes or construction toys like Lego;
• Remember that everything your child wears or takes into school needs to be named – this includes coats, scarves, gloves, hats, shoes and toys. Consider buying iron-on name labels as a quick way to name everything at once or use a permanent laundry marker. When naming shoes, also help your child to know which shoe goes on to which foot by drawing half a picture (like a smiley face) into the left shoe and the other half of the picture into the right shoe – when the shoes are placed correctly the picture will look complete!
You can also develop an interest in reading by reading notices and labels when away from home and postcards or greetings cards from family members or friends.
Other Things to Bear in Mind:
• learn about numbers, counting and money when helping you to pay for items;
‘Name Treasure Hunts’ can be a fun way of getting your child to recognise their name. Write your child’s name on pieces of paper and hide them around the house. Encourage your child to find them all. Other names (or words) can then be introduced to encourage your child to look carefully at each letter of their name.
Reading & Writing Continued
• Ask your child to help name their uniform/clothes and school equipment like drinks bottle and lunch box. This will aid name recognition and help them to identify which things are theirs!
•about:reading and writing as you write and follow a shopping list;
• learn about their local environment on the way to and from the shops, etc.
• practise their listening and memory skills and extend their vocabulary by helping you to collect named items;
• colouring and drawing with pens, pencils and crayons, painting; • cutting and sticking materials together;
• Most schools offer fruit as a snack during the day. Encourage your child to try a range of different fruit to explore their likes and dislikes and also practise peeling bananas and oranges.
• Explore different ways of being creative, for example:
• Encourage your child to be active. Help them to explore climbing equipment in a local park, play running games, practise riding a bike or a scooter and play simple games with a ball or frisbee.
• Lots of schools offer a home visit which allows staff to visit you and your child in your own home setting. This enables your child to meet their new teacher in a setting where they feel more secure and relaxed. Don’t worry about these meetings – it is just a chance for staff to begin to get to know your child, collect any important information about your child and pass on any information about the school. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have and pass on any information about your child. You might find it helpful to prepare some questions in advance.
Preparing Your Child for School A Guide for Parents and Guardians…
A good foundation to being able to write is to develop your child’s fine motor skills. This is because good fine motor skills enable a child to hold a pencil firmly as they are writing. There are many resources that could support the development of this skill on the Twinkl website, just search for ‘fine motor skills’. Threading is also a great way to develop fine motor skills, whether it is with beads or buttons, or making necklaces out of dried pasta. Weaving wool around a cardboard template or strips of card through each other are also other simple activities that you could do at home. As is playing with handheld construction toys, small toys and cutting and sticking Ifactivities.yourchild is ready and interested in writing, encourage them to write simple words or sentences. Initially, begin by focusing on your child’s name as this will also help with reading and name recognition. Encourage them to write their name into greetings cards, on to artwork they have done or on to letters .
• Use every day experiences as learning opportunities, for example take your child with you to the shops. They can learn
• exploring sounds made by instruments or ‘noise makers’ (for example rice in an empty yoghurt pot) and listening to and moving to music.
• It may help your child to choose a small toy that they would like to take with them to school (ensure that it is named). This can act as a comfort for your child and also encourage them to talk to others. Please check school rules before agreeing that this can happen.
