Go Green At Hilton Al Ain Al Ain, said: “Adopting the method of converting the food waste into the rich organic compost, which can be utilized for growing plants and help in maintaining lush-green landscapes, makes us feel like an eco-human! We are thankful for the Travel with Purpose 2015 Program which helped us bring the idea alive.”

The Concept of Recycling Waste Food Finally Became Possible at Hilton Al Ain. Hilton Al Ain is happy to announce its commitment towards a sustainable and ecofriendly environment with the installation of the first ever small size food composting machines within the Hilton Worldwide. The machines were installed after participating in the Hilton Worldwide Travel with Purpose 2015 Program.

The Green Good Oklin food waste decomposition system is designed for rapid composting performance (aerobic composting), using an energy-efficient and automated control process. The system employs high temperature microorganisms to decompose food waste and organic

matter. This is accomplished without the need for repeated additions of microorganisms or other additives to the composting chamber. It reduces the food waste, as much as 90 percent volume in 24 hours, and converts into an organic compost. This organic compost can be used as a soil amendment suitable for landscaping, gardening or for the organic garden. With the help of these composting machines, Hilton Al Ain will go green and fresh. This project will have a significant effect on the environment and will be working for the cause of economy, community, health and sanitation.

Food waste is one of the major challenges among the hospitality industry. As a hotelier, the property has to embrace sustainability as a lifestyle and not only a single action. Food waste cannot be avoided 100 percent, but surely it can be turned into a valuable resource. Therefore Hilton Al Ain considers the food waste as an asset, for the very reason of it, being the source of life. Jacques Claudel, general manager, Hilton

of Cousteau Divers, a global non-profit citizen science platform of divers united to study and protect the world’s oceans and marine life. Pierre-Yves’s most recent project Project Hermes is a revolutionary initiative helping to measure ocean temperatures worldwide at the scale of the ecosystem. Spearheaded by Cousteau Divers, the project deploys reference instruments, as well as providing training to divers on how to use the equipment, ensuring that every time a Cousteau diver enters the underwater realm, they provide vital data on how ocean temperature varies. The significance of producing a new source of scientific data such as this is groundbreaking. Project Hermes has the potential to increase understanding of the ocean at large and to improve management and conservation of its resources. In line with the Eye on Earth Summit

theme “informed decision-making for sustainable development”, Pierre-Yves will discuss the importance of accessible marine data for sustainable development and the value of harnessing citizen science to help to close the data gap. In the context of Eye on Earth’s Oceans and Blue Carbon Special Initiative, which focuses on the importance of collecting data on oceans and coastal ecosystems, the work of Cousteau Divers and Project Hermes will be hugely beneficial in providing vital knowledge and data to enhance management of marine ecosystems around the world. Close to 30 sessions will be delivered by more than 150 prominent speakers during the three-day Eye on Earth Summit. For more information, please visit www.eoesummit.org.

Sarah Jones takes Mini to the MAX! A while back we published an article featuring Sarah Jones, an extremely focused entrepreneur that found a market gap here in the UAE and proceeded to sprint with it in the only direction she knew; straight to the top! Less than a year later we are so impressed with this young woman’s tenacity and simply must tell you all about Mini gone MAXI! Mini Exchange is the Middle East’s online marketplace for everything mums and kids, featuring thousands of products from over 250 global, sought-after brands. Catering for mothers, babies, and children from newborn to 14 years of age, parents can search for items by category, size, brand or colour. Brands include everything from Havaianas and Gingersnaps to Baby Jogger and Chicco strollers, to Frozen and Minion toys. Purchases are then delivered directly to customer’s doors, both locally and internationally. Mini Exchange sources directly from brands, retailers and distributors across the Middle East, ensuring 100% authenticity. New arrivals are added regularly to bring customers the very latest trends in fashion, essentials, such as strollers, and lifestyle products such as toys, backto-school equipment and outdoor goods. The user-friendly, mobile site supported by Mini Exchange’s tech savvy team, is there to make a mother’s life easier, and to free up time otherwise spent in the malls! The company started out in January 2015 with a mere 500 items and, through a very effective marketing campaign and a highly active social media presence, quickly grew to become a thriving online marketplace. Today, Mini Exchange boasts an impressive offering of over 30,000 items, including both full priced items and an outlet section where buyers can find well-priced promotions and products from past seasons. In January 2015, Mini Exchange was selected as the GCC-based start-up for the 10th edition of the U.S. hosted Google Blackbox Connect programme, which founder Sarah Jones attended in Silicon Valley. Blackbox’s vision is to empower entrepreneurs in startup communities, whilst its two-week long programme, Blackbox Connect, offers these entrepreneurs the chance to collaborate with likeminded founders of start-ups from all around the world. Nothing can be more rewarding to an entrepreneur than the voice of support from both an international and local investment community, and last month, Sarah’s hard work, perseverance and innovation paid off large in the form of a secured seed fundraising round of over $1million from strategic Middle Eastern and European angel investors. Aside from creating a platform for product sales, the Mini Exchange website also includes a blog, featuring articles focusing on kids’ fashion and lifestyle. It is a creative and informative platform that parents can visit for fun-filled activities, recipes that kids love, and updates on what’s happening in Dubai and the neighbouring Emirates. There’s something for everyone! With 50 AED off your first order it’s definitely time to visit www.miniexchange.com!

meet the Middle East’s female car-racing team

Palestine’s girl racers customise ordinary cars to compete against established male teams across the West Bank. Now they’re the subject of a feature-length documentary. We find out what drives them

he acrylic nails aren’t the first thing you notice, but they’re definitely in the mix, alongside hot dust, hot air, thick engine oil, makeshift tracks, customised street cars and puffy one-piece racing suits. Oh yes, and women; Palestinian women, some of whom wear amazing nail art. Meet the world’s first all-female racing-car driving team from occupied Palestine. There’s Maysoon Jayyusi, the team’s 38-year-old manager, from Jerusalem, who says her love for racing-car driving came from the frustration of being stuck in the West Bank’s constant traffic jams and checkpoints; Mona Ali, 29, from Ramallah, who was one of the first female racers in Palestine; Marah Zahalka, 23, who was a racing champion at 19; Noor Dauod, 25, from Jerusalem, who is determinedly persistent, if not always successful on the race track; and finally Betty Saadeh, 35, the only member who comes from a wealthy family of racers in Bethlehem. The five women are the focus of Amber Fares’ feature-length documentary, Speed, which recently played to full houses at an international documentary festival in Sheffield. It’s a full-throttle but sensitive take on the adventures this female team face as they take on all the stereotypes that confront them while attempting to break into a male-dominated sport within a conservative - relatively speaking as this isn’t Saudi Arabia society.

cover story

“I was racing cars when I was a kid, learning how to do it and speeding with the boys from school,” says Ali. When she was 16 and too young to have a licence, she would borrow her sister’s car and race through Ramallah by night, when the streets were deserted. She was the first woman to join the fledgling Palestinian racing federation in 2005. “At first, the boys wouldn’t accept me; they didn’t want to race with me,” she says. “But I told them I’d carry on racing whether they liked it or not.” And so she did. As the other women joined the federation in the years that followed, they soon became a regular fixture on Palestine’s increasingly popular car-racing circuit – the “circuit” being market squares and airstrips repurposed for weekend races. Being accepted – first by family, then by male peers – as female racing-car drivers was a challenge. The film shows the terrible pressure and sacrifices made by families scrabbling funds together, in an economy stunted by occupation, for what is an inaccessibly expensive sport Costs for cars, continuous maintenance, repairs and training can run into tens of thousands of dollars. We see how Zahalka, for instance, has varying degrees of support from her immediate family – her grandfather doesn’t think she should have been encouraged to race, while her father is easily her number one fan. Her family delayed the purchase of land on which to build a home and decided instead to buy her a car. Weaved into all of this is the essentially Palestinian story of life under occupation: trying to find freedom and agency in pursuits such as sport while the economic and practical realities of a decades-long military occupation seem to stymie these attempts at every turn. The West Bank, where the Speed Sisters live and train, doesn’t have car-racing tracks, and the women can’t afford actual racing vehicles, so they end up customising standard street cars to race against male teams. They practise on stretches of land next to Israeli military compounds, where, at one point in the film, one of them is hit by a tear-gas canister fired by a soldier. You’d only put yourself through all this if you loved the sport. And these racers clearly do. Team manager Jayyusi now lives in Jordan, but she still leads the team. “It’s true that, when we first started, people looked at us as though we’d just landed from space,” she says. “But when they saw us race they changed their minds. Now we have fans, people who encourage us and sponsor us.” She thinks female racing-car drivers becoming a formidable force within the Arab world, is just like anything else in any other place: “You prove that you are strong enough, not scared, that you can compete with the men,” she says. “And then it just becomes acceptable.”

family

Not too long ago I saw a Facebook video of a father quite pleased with the feedback that he received from his child’s new nursery. He was extremely pleased with the new caregiver’s choice of vocabulary that included words like energetic instead of hyper-active and affectionate instead of inappropriate when describing his child’s desire to hug his teachers and classmates. It was a popular video and as parents, there have been or will be times, when we cringe at the vocabulary used to describe our children. The term “spirited,” for example, is far easier to digest than “stubborn” or even “strong willed”. When it comes to my own “high spirited” son, I am well aware of the meaning of these gentler terms and when confronted with these reports, I sympathize with the victimized teacher knowing well that my little bundle must have let them really have it today!

B

efore we had children most of us were very opinionated about what we would and would not accept. We judged the parent whose child was sprawled out across the floor and the parent of that confrontational screaming child. How many of you have that child now? You know the “spirited” child; the one that doesn’t ever consider “no” to be the final answer and in many cases, has trouble obeying whatever his or her parents may say. The child that makes you look like an unfit parent in public. Yes, that spirited, stubborn and strongwilled child. My spirited child is only two years old but we have been bumping heads since he was about 10 months old. So while I haven’t had years of experience raising a spirited child, there are a few things I have learned along the way. 1. He was born this way. Seriously, he came out of the womb screaming at the top of his lungs. When I heard it, I knew. I just knew. Once I accepted the fact that my son isn’t trying to get under my skin, it made dealing with him a lot easier.

2. I don’t have to attend every argument I am invited to. Sometimes just saying “ok, have it your way” gets what I want done a lot faster than trying to force him. 3. Give him choices. Trying to force a strong-willed child to do anything is asking for a battle. Some battles are worth the fight, and some are not. We strong-willed adults can attest to this. 4. Listen to him and see things from his prospective. Often, when he is upset, it’s because he feels as though something was unjustly done. Sometimes he’s right. His reaction to the injustice is not acceptable but his feelings should be validated, so I try to address both the cause and his response. 5. Try to be consistent with rules and routines. I can’t just wing it with my spirited child or he will challenge every decision made. My goal is to teach my son how to manage his initial reactions to the things around him, but not to change his overall outlook on life. Here’s to all the “spirited” children and to the parents riding the childhood rapids that will surely lead to a peaceful and placid lake in the years to come! "A DREAM OF HUMANITY" ON THE BANKS OF THE SEINE IN PARIS

T

A gigantic photo exhibition now covers the walls along the banks of the Seine in Paris. The 370-metre long panorama includes photos representing humanity and diversity as well as seven key words translated into languages from all around the world:respect, peace, solidarity, friendship, dignity, hospitality and hope. he exhibition that UNHCR helped plan includes photos taken by the famous photojournalist Reza over the past 30 years, and portraits of refugees by photographer Ali Bin Thalith. It also features photographs taken by Syrian refugee children living in Kawergosk refugee camp in Iraq and trained in photography by the world-renowned Reza. The exhibition is organized by Reza in partnership with UNHCR and the ÂŤMairie de ParisÂť and is sponsored by the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA). It was officially launched on 4 August. All over the summer and until mid-October this year, the Parisians, visitors and tourists will have the opportunity to see these photographs while

walking on the banks of the Seine opposite the Orsay Museum. The first visitors were struck by the photos and what they mean to them. "I think that France and Paris should be more open to hosting refugees. I don't know if borders should exist. It is not only the French, but it is all the nations who don't react. We should at least give them the minimum, to give them back their dignity. For example, before we had public baths that were open in Paris. Taking a shower is not once a week, it is every day. They need to be able to shower. Hygiene is important. They are human beings. We should give them back their dignity," said 63 year-old Cecile while talking to UNHCR volunteers who guide the visitors through the exhibition. Another visitor noted the current situation in Europe and commented that the situation is still better in France than in many other European countries.

making a difference

A few hundred metres further down the river the photos already turn into reality where refugees and migrants are sleeping in a makeshift settlement under a bridge on the banks just beneath the CitĂŠ de la mode. "In the current context of the worsening situation of asylum in Europe and worsening conditions for asylum seekers and refugees, the exhibition is reminding us that 60 million people are uprooted around the world and that many of their basic needs are not covered. We hope that the exhibition will invite visitors to reflect on the situation of refugees, create awareness, empathy and actions of solidarity," said Philippe Leclerc, UNHCR's Representative in France. For many visitors, the most stunning part of the exhibition is the section with the photos of Kawergosk refugee camp taken by Syrian refugee children. These were taken in December 2013 when Reza travelled to Kawergosk refugee camp hosting Syrian refugees in Iraq. During his mission he started a photography workshop for the children living in the camp. Some 10 children aged from 12 to 15 took part in the workshop and the result was astonishing. "Many professional photographers, including myself are jealous of these photos. We would have loved to take photos like these," Reza explained.

This workshop was the birth of the Exile Voices project, where Reza in partnership with UNHCR will organize photo workshops for youth in refugee camps throughout the world. "It is my pleasure and my honour that during my long photographer's career, somehow, I shared the lives of these people and invited the audience to think of refugee situations since anybody can become a refugee. I also witnessed UNHCR's work in the field and I want to pay tribute to the commitment of its staff", Reza added. HIPA is sponsoring the exhibition "A Dream of Humanity" to be part of the wide-ranging humanitarian responsibility and to document the living conditions of refugees and their everyday struggles. "We also feel that it is our moral obligation to raise awareness of the current plight of Syrian refugees and their bravery in telling us their stories by staring into the lens of a camera", said Ali bin Thalith, Secretary General of HIPA, who is a photographer himself. *The exhibition is located opposite the Orsay Museum, between the Louvre Palace and the Pont Royal, until 15 October. EMOTIONAL STRENGTH;

THE FIRST STEP TO

Nicholas Katushabe

LIFE GREATNESS

Years have passed since I first started mentoring, inspiring and motivating young people through public speaking and writing and I am still frequently surprised by the interesting ways people frame questions about their challenges. A few weeks ago, one of my mentees sent me an email that caught my attention, simply as a result of the title and subject matter; “Things Emotionally Strong People Don’t Do” Part of the email read: “I love all your mentor-ship material. You've helped me get through some seriously tough times over the past six months but even though I’ve made significant progress, I often struggle with emotional weakness. I persistently resist what I know I need to do for myself and was wondering what emotionally strong people do NOT do? The reason I ask is because I’ve spent a lot of time implementing positive habits in my life, but haven’t really focused on removing any (parallel) bad habits.” This may relate to this gentleman’s unique life situation, but emotional weakness is something all of us struggle with at times thus prompting me to take a stab at answering his question in a general sense for the benefit of all. Here are four things emotionally strong people don’t do:

As Henry Ford put it, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you are right.” Emotionally strong people know this is true. If you really want to do something, you can and you will find a way. If you don’t, you will surely find a long list of excuses. So stop saying “I wish” and start saying “I will.” Turn your “can’t” into “can” and your dreams into plans that will eventually become a reality.

They don’t waste time feeling sorry for themselves.

Emotionally strong people don’t sit around feeling sorry about their circumstances or how others have treated them. Instead, they take responsibility for their roles in life, work on changing what can be changed, and keep in mind that life isn’t always easy or fair. In the end, happiness is not the absence of problems, but simply the ability to deal well with them. So look at what you have, instead of what you have lost. Because it’s not what the world takes away from you that counts; it’s what you do with what you have left. •

They don’t compare their journey to everyone Else's.

Social comparison is the thief of happiness. Do "YOUR" best and don’t compare your progress with that of others. They aren’t YOU! We all need our own time to travel our own distance. Running your own race and making sense of your time is always the best choice you can ever make in life. Emotionally strong people know this is the truth, and they live by it.

26

The Source

They don’t say, “I can’t.”

They don’t think it’s too late to start over.

Let go of the idea that it’s too late to start over. Remember, it’s always better to be at the bottom of the ladder you want to climb than the top of the one you don’t… even if it means beginning new. Just because some things didn’t work out as you had expected, or didn’t happen as fast as you thought they would, is no excuse to give up on yourself. Time passes one way or the other. Do what you need to do so that, at the very least, you can look back someday and say, “I gave life my best shot. This is precisely how life is and it’s our responsibility to give it meaning. Life without purpose is a life wasted!

• The forum will feature an exhibition, conference, several workshops, and invaluable networking opportunities. • Key discussion forums are designed to help shape growth of the SME sector and highlight the investment opportunities in the city of Al Ain.

his new event will support a government drive to grow the Small and Medium Enterprise sector by providing an invaluable platform for entrepreneurs to build relationships and do business, while being the premier learning and networking arena for individuals and organizations involved in all types of SMEs. Al Ain SME Forum & Exhibition supports the vision of the Abu Dhabi Government of developing SMEs in order to build a sustainable, vibrant, and diversified economy. SMEs are a fundamental part of the economic fabric and play a crucial role in furthering growth, innovation and prosperity of nations. Al Ain SMEs currently represent a small percentage of all private sector companies in the city. This relatively low proportion suggests a huge potential for UAE based entrepreneurs to grow this vital sector, thereby increasing GDP and employment within the region. Mr/Ms. XYZ, Director/Head of ABC Dept. at the Abu Dhabi Chamber said “ADCCI are proud to be organizing the Al Ain SME Forum & Exhibition 2015. It is a widely held view among experts in the field that SMEs are more likely to succeed when they receive business development assistance in addition to funding. For this reason, we see events such as Al Ain SME Forum & Exhibition, where business people can seek out advice and funding, which is vital in stimulating the growth and nurturing of entrepreneurial talent within the city of Al Ain.”

Pope Francis First Visit To America After his historic, first-ever visit to the United States, Pope Francis said he was surprised by “the warmth of the people, who are so lovable.” The Pope spent 45 minutes speaking with the media aboard the American Airlines flight that carried him back to Rome after his nine-day visit to Cuba and the United States, and answered a series of questions. He said the trip was “beautiful” and summed up the welcome he received in the three cities of his tour by saying that in Washington the welcome was “warm but more formal”; in New York the people were “exuberant” and in Philadelphia they were “very expressive.”...

World Heart Day 2015:

What to Eat & What Not to Eat The everyday stresses in today’s life have started taking a toll on people’s health. In earlier days, heart ailments would typically affect only the elderly. Those days are long gone. Bad food habits, an unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle and high-stress careers have brought down the age of those affected drastically. It is no more uncommon for an executive in his/ her prime to complain of high cholesterol levels. The number of cases of 35-45 year olds suffering from heart attacks has also seen a steady rise in recent years. To maintain a healthy heart, it is critical to exercise, maintain your fitness levels and get adequate sleep. However, all of this must be balanced with a well thought through diet for it to have a positive effect. One must know which foods are enemies of the heart (as they increase your cholesterol levels) and should be avoided or had in controlled quantities. It is equally important to know which foods to load up on and include in your daily diet. FOODS THAT ARE BAD FOR THE HEART:

OATS A diet that includes oats is effective in lowering the cholesterol levels in our body. Oats are also rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.

TRANS FAT Studies have conclusively proven that trans fat is the ultimate villain. It finds its way into processed and packaged goods, especially those with a longer shelf life. Read nutrition labels carefully and avoid hydrogenated oils.

NUTS Nuts have high amounts of unsaturated fats, which is good for the heart as it helps in reducing the inflammation of the arteries. A handful of nuts every day will help keep heart problems at bay!

RED MEAT Red meat is known to have a whopping amount of saturated fat that raises the number of harmful LDL cholesterol globules in your body. Red meat is not all bad, it does have higher levels of zinc, vitamins B6, B12, amino acids and iron than white meat. Do not avoid it altogether, just limit its intake.

BERRIES Berries are the new power foods. These fruits are packed with antioxidants and help to significantly reduce blood pressure. They also boost the good HDL cholesterol levels, and thus help in your endeavour towards a healthy heart. Berries are rich sources of photo-chemicals which are a powerful tool to aid smoother blood flow and to fight serious ailments.

EGG YOLK It is the egg yolk that stores saturated fats. Having said that, not all saturated fats are bad and some are actually required by your body. Do not cut away completely from egg yolks as they contain vitamin A and B and are a powerhouse of energy – simply limit the portions! SALT AND SUGAR Too much sodium and sugar intake is directly linked with higher blood pressures, as it retains the excess fluid in your body. The recommended daily intake of sodium should be less than 1,500 mg according to The American Heart Association. 32

SO WHAT’S THE GOOD NEWS? Here are some heart-friendly foods that you must make sure are included in your diet:

LEGUMES Legumes are great for the heart and have antioxidants, proteins and fiber. SALMON Salmon boasts abundant amounts of omega 3 fatty acids, which are great for a healthy heart.

1. ISLAND OF THE DOLLS Macabre, creepy, weird, and dark; the perfect recipe for a tourist attraction. Not far from Mexico City there is a small island adorned with sinister looking dolls hanging from trees and buildings and from every available nook and cranny, and which has been drawing in tourists in their droves. A little girl drowned in a canal, and Don Julian Santana, the man who found her floating by, later found a doll drifting in the same canal, and so he hung that doll by the nearest tree as a way to honor the little girl’s spirit. Then he hung another one nearby, then another, then another, and then he went crazy and became obsessed, going round doing nothing but hanging dolls everywhere on the island. But here’s the weird thing… he ended up dying by drowning in that same canal a few years later. His family ‘run’ the island as a tourist attraction and many people have reported sights of ghosts and strange phenomena. 2. ANWICK POISON GARDEN A lot of people are fascinated by the healing power of plants and all their mercurial qualities, but not so with the Duchess of Northumberland. She’s drawn to their ability to kill, and how gruesome and painful those deaths could be. So she created a garden filled with all these dangerous plants; around 100 of them, some of which can kill you if you even touch them, and then opened it to the public, set inside a gothic castle which was used as a stand-in for the Harry Potter films. Kids of all ages are welcome. 3. KARNI MATA TEMPLE Rats and lots of them. In the town of Deshnoke in India, there is a temple which people flock to in order to pay homage to a C14th mystic who they believe was the reincarnation of the goddess Durga. Over the years rats have infested the place and for some strange reason the people believe that they are sacred and should not be harmed, so they just let them crawl around and even feed them, an estimated 20,000 of them, and they’ve even dug out specially made tunnels for them. Now people go there to see the rats. Nice place to take the kids. 4. IZU ISLANDS A vacation destination where you have to wear a gas mask. That’s not right is it? Japan’s Izu Islands is a little cluster of volcanic isles which have erupted multiple times, the last time a mere ten years ago, and where harmful gases, slightly poisonous and with a foul smelling odor, regularly leak through the ground. The islands do possess a lush landscape though, so people still visit, but only once they acquire the gas masks which are obligatory by law. 5. GNOME COUNTRYSIDE A whole landscape in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, filled with gnomes, where you can go camping and hiking, and where you can meet the owner and founder, Rich Humphreys, who’ll tell you all about the habits, the history, and folklore of these little bearded people. Apparently he believes that they actually existed once upon a time. And he actually looks like one of them. And he’s married to one of them. Allegedly…
