he other night I watched the news and as is often the case after an overload of the most popular reality show of all time, I couldn’t sleep. I tried counting sheep but most of the flock had been mercilessly assassinated in a mass terror shooting before I could get to them, while others ventured off for deployment in far off lands to fight wars of a nondisclosed political nature. In my futile attempts to “ram”-ble on, I noticed that quite a few of them had been pulling the wool over my eyes the entire time and whilst “on the lamb”, ignited a fury resulting in an “o-so-vine” “lambasting”!

For “flocksake”, stop pushing the “mutton” button; has the entire “ram” world gone “baaaad?” And as I lay trying to make some sense of the chaos that neither “ewe” or I could have imagined, another “lamb was preparing itself for the Slaughter”. Sheepishly, I dragged my exhausted body out of bed to avoid witnessing any further carnage and strained to comprehend the imagery. I decided that the only way to arrive at a “Silence of the Lamb”, avoid the soon to arrive “hogget” and finally drift into a well deserved “big horn sleep”, was by way of some soothing music. I turned on the stereo and by “shear” coincidence, drifted off into a deep slumber courtesy of a Genesis classic, “The Lamb Lays Down on Broadway” … Evidently, I am ripe for a vacation!!!

Wacky World Dads Compete To See Who Can Stack More Cheerios On Their Babies

With Father's Day on the horizon, dads everywhere are taking the daddest challenge ever. They're competing to see who can stack the most cheerios on their babies. The #CheerioChallenge started when a blog called "Life of Dad" posted this pic of a sleeping baby with 5 cheerios on his nose. "Can you top 5??? Prove it when you do," - wrote Life of Dad on their facebook page. Little did they know that the challenge would

soon take over the internet. The image received more than 10,000 comments and hundreds of baby pics with cheerios on them. Patrick Quinn, the founder of Life of Dad, says that he came up with the idea while playing with his 3-week-old baby. He put one Cheerio on his nose and thought it would be fun to see how many he could stack. The rest is history.

2016 MERCEDES-BENZ

C-CLASS COUPE No argument, the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan is a benchmark car in its class on many fronts and taking it for a week end test drive was as much a cruel teaser – I had to give it back - as it was a gearhead’s 48 hours of bliss. "The wow factor" doesn't really do justice to this svelte and sexy two door tin top and yes, there's a raunchy AMG 63 version in the mix at launch, along with a cabrio drop top down the track. It looks sensational from all angles particularly from the rear and has strong cut through on the road judging by the reaction from other drivers and pedestrians. The Coupe is being touted as a long distance tourer which it well may be but it also has a decidedly sporty edge, particularly the C300 and the C63 which has a specially developed, wider rear axle that performs a torque vectoring function as A number of variants include the C200 and well as enhancing the C63's stance. Driver assist functions are numerous across the range with the higher spec cars gaining more. The Car Is An Absolute Monster In Performance Terms The MCT transmission blips the throttle on down changes and offers multiple drive modes, as does the 7-G-Tronic in the other models. Where the C63 really has an edge is in the new wider rear axle and electronic limited slip differential, the 19-inch front and wider rear wheels, the carbon ceramic brakes (optional), and so called uni-ball rear suspension bushes that replace the more flexible rubber items. Electronic shock absorbers can be set to a certain stiffness by the driver or operate in 'active' mode. The car is an absolute monster in performance terms clocking a 0-100km/h sprint in under 4.0-seconds. But that's only a small part of the story as its dynamics, especially the steering and grip is among the best you will find on a four seat production car. It can be placed with pin point accuracy through turns, has incredible feel and quick responses through the wheel coupled with carbon ceramic brakes that do not fade _at all…you get the picture? Did I mention the exhaust note? Wind down the windows through a tunnel and it's a symphony of thunderous snap, crackle and pop - gorgeous! The Interior The interior is likewise a statement of the Mercedes Benz design philosophy of sensual purity and combines emotion with intelligence. Although it exudes athletic and youthful charm, it has grown considerably in maturity. Driver and passengers enjoy an ambiance that leans towards the interior of the C-Class Saloon yet raises it to a new, sporty level. Flowing forms characterize the center console as well as the door and rear side panelling, which smoothly merge into one another to emphasize the coupe’s character. “The modern charm of our new C-Class Coupe is provided by its fascinating design, hot blooded exterior, high-class appointments, agile handling and hallmark Mercedes qualities that include performance, comfort, safety and efficiency”, said Dirk Fetzer, Director of Sales & Marketing at Daimler Middle East & Levant. “This is the sportiest incarnation of the C-Class, and meets the needs of individualists seeking a car that grabs attention with its design characteristics and powerful engine performance - this is a car for those who love life.”

WADI WAKE UP

I

was born in the water. No, I don’t mean in a kiddie-pool under amethyst crystals pulsating to the rhythms of whale music. I mean that as a young ’un I spent my days swimming, snorkeling, sailing, surfing and any other activity under the sun beginning with s.

The result of all that exercise is that my body is built for the water. You’ve all seen those Spartan-esque Aussie lifeguards with pecs like puddings on a plate, those gallant watchmen who rescue drowning damsels and deliver mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to distressed kittens. Well, forget the heroics, I’m not one of those. My physique has been likened—by my wife, no less—to that of a Dugong, the rotund and gentle seagrass-eating relative of the elephant. I’m the quiet man of the sea. It’s my element. No need to shout about it. But, for sure, it was with no lack of confidence that I trooped off to Wadi Adventure the other day to master the art of wakeboarding, certain the skills of childhood would return undiminished. For those who don’t know, wakeboarding is a mixture of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing. The idea is to ride the wake of

the speedboat zooming ahead of you. Of course, at Wadi Adventure they don’t have a speedboat. Instead, they have a motorized pulley that hauls you 350 meters along a cable at speeds up to 45 km/h. For the more advanced, there are jumps like those at a skate park. I made contact with the lovely Nivine who placed my family in the capable hands of Tanka, King of the Kable, and we were all set for an hour of fun and frivolity. After some instruction in the fundamentals, we got down to business. It needed two seconds to shatter my illusions. The Dugong of the Desert took to wakeboarding like a duck to duck hunting. I could barely stand up on the thing, and the moment I was up, I’d come crashing down again, lingering long beneath the surface to hide my embarrassment. My seven and eight-year-old, on the other hand, blitzed it. Chagrinned, I observed from the sidelines as they zoomed by beaming with delight. At one point my daughter took a hand from the line to wave at me, squealing ‘Daddy, look at me!’ Or was that ‘Daddy, it’s so easy!’? Not sure. We couldn’t get them off the thing, resorting

to claiming there was a problem with the cable so they’d agree to go home. And we were about to set off when Tanka urged me to have another go. I looked to the good wife despairingly—could her husband’s delicate self-esteem survive a second mangling in one day? As always at times like these she returned me an encouraging nod, and so, with the deepest humility and respect, I re-donned the lifejacket and helmet and psyched up for battle. And, boy, was it fun. I carved up the water, zipping along grinning deliriously with excitement as my family jumped up and down cheering me on. It was like I’d been doing it for years. The Dugong of the Desert was back. And he learned a few things. For one, I learned that a little humility goes a long way. And, I learned that I’m no longer young. The balance has gone, I’ve got the reflexes of a sloth and my spine is about as flexible as a fossil. But, more importantly, I learned that the fact I am no longer a kid doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy myself like one. Wakeboarding at Wadi Adventure was awesome.

Making a Difference One Resident at a Time

s we mature and embark on the journey through adulthood, each and every one of us chooses how to spend the more productive years of our lives. I believe that the ultimate goal of every human being should be making a difference by improving the lives of those around us and thereby enriching our own lives. In this issue of The Source we sat with Dr. Howard Podolsky, CEO of Cambridge Medical & Rehabilitation Center, to discover the passion behind a man and an organization busy doing just that; making a huge difference in the lives of people in our community. Dr. Howard Podolsky, of both Canadian and American origin studied Internal Medicine and practised for 13 years as a Geriatric Physician. Consumed with the pursuit of excellence, Dr. Howard continued his studies at night to earn a degree in Health Law which, a few years later inspired an additional MBA specialising in Healthcare Finance & Management. You are obviously an extremely capable and motivated professional; how long have you been in The UAE? I arrived just over 4 years ago, recruited by SEHA as part of a leadership management team at Al Ain Hospital, where I spent 2 years as the Chief Medical Officer. I then joined TVM Capital Health Care Partners, a private entity and lead investor for CMR where I assumed the role of CEO for both the Abu Dhabi and Al Ain Locations. Cambridge Medical & Rehabilitation Center has earned a reputation as a leading facility offering a wide spectrum of medical services for a diverse range of conditions, from illness recovery to the treatment of chronic ailments; what separates CMR from other similar facilities? If I had to answer this in a single word, that word would be “hope. Our focus is on rehabilitation with an ultimate goal of sending our patients home to their families and reintegrating them safely back into their communities. Make no mistake, we do not offer false hope and when our patients arrive, the first thing we determine is the expectation of each individual. We then apply our multidisciplinary approach to achieve these goals within clinical reason and have, in many cases, witnessed miracles evolve.

16

The Source

Can you tell us about the demographics of your patients? Our patients include individuals of all ages facing complex medical issues following serious injury, acute illness, major surgery or chronic disease. We are proud to be offering the only specialized inpatient pediatric rehabilitation program in Abu Dhabi that includes a dedicated Sunflower Program designed for pre-term infants and infants who have experienced perinatal difficulties. What is the rate of success in regards to discharging patients to their families and communities? We currently have an astounding 60% discharge rate and as a result of the strong relationships fostered at CMR, a spontaneous, initially unintended out patient program has evolved. To what extent are families involved throughout the entire treatment process? We are deeply rooted in the culture and customs of the UAE and since family is of paramount importance, we welcome and include them during every stage of the recovery process. Our patients are referred to as residents and we provide the necessary amenities to achieve this home-like environment. Tell us a little about the staff at CMR. Our success is a testament to the expertise and relentless effort of our superb staff. We became the UAE’s leading rehabilitation and long term care facility as a direct result of a committed team of experts that place the needs of our patients at the forefront of a combined agenda. I have worked in healthcare for more than 25 years and this is by far the most fulfilling position I have ever had. My inspiration is fueled on a daily basis by our patients, their families and the staff. After the interview with the doctor, I will openly admit that my faith in humanity received a very welcome booster shot. I have always maintained that Al Ain is home to some of the most interesting and inspiring individuals one could ever hope to meet and Dr. Howard Podolsky and his team are shining examples of a few unsung heroes selflessly dedicated to making a difference in the lives of people in our community.

80 PERCENT OF TRAVELLERS WILL

FACE ISSUES THIS SUMMER

T

he summer travelling season has kicked off with a bang and, with Dubai Airports reporting ever-increasing numbers of travellers month on month, drawing in an impressive 7.24 million passengers in March of this year, travel insurance providers are preparing themselves for the surge in claims. A recent survey found that as many as 80 per cent of travellers have experienced some sort of travel-related incident, with flight delays hitting the top spot, followed by illness and then by trip postponement (or cancellation). The survey also showed that theft was the top fear (52 percent), followed by concern about injury or accident (44 percent), followed closely by loss of luggage. Despite this, a survey of UAE residents by YouGov found that 58 percent of residents don’t purchase travel insurance and a third say they only do occasionally. With such high incidences of issues and wide-spread concern about the subsequent financial implications of facing issues when travelling, why is it that vacationers aren’t more diligent about taking out travel insurance before they jet off?

20

The Source

Jonathan Rawling, CFO of compareit4me.com, says: “It seems that people do want the safety net of travel insurance, but don’t really know where to start. Most of us spend a long time saving for, planning and looking forward to our holidays and the last thing any of us wants is to be thinking about what would happen if the flight were cancelled or overbooked or indeed, if our luggage didn’t arrive at our destination or we were to have a medical emergency or loss of belongings while abroad.” He added: “Travel insurance takes all of these worries away, leaving us to focus on enjoying the well deserved trip. In addition, all of this peace of mind often comes at just a tiny fraction of the cost of your trip. Consequently, we have teamed up with Allianz Global Assistance to introduce travel insurance to our customers, offering various types of travel cover under three distinct brands. Customers can buy online at compareit4me.com and receive their policy instantly.” Worldwide, Allianz Global Assistance reacts to a travel insurance issue every two seconds, making them leaders in their industry and a brand that people trust. Whether its oneoff single trip coverage for a specific destination, or to cover a specific activity (such as skiing), or a more comprehensive annual cover for the entire family, Allianz Global Assistance has options to suit every itinerary. And with compareit4me. com’s easy-to-use finance comparison platform, it’s now easier than ever to find the right travel insurance policy to suit your travel plans.

HOW MY BUSINESS AND I

SURVIVE THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS? Hannah Hall Desert Marketing UAE www.desertmarketinguae.com

T

he excitement at school in the last few weeks has been mounting with children bouncing around with a mixture of glee and pure exhaustion. But with it all comes a bundle of mixed emotions for working parents.

If you are trying to juggle work with children off school, the long stretch can mean a herculean effort to organise the logistics of work and childcare and with it, a sense of anxiety or worry. Although I work from a virtual office a couple of days a week, I work from home the rest of the time and even more so during the holidays. I’ve tried various methods over the years so I thought I’d share 5 things that help keep me connected to work whilst juggling family time over the summer: 1. Get organised – plan as much as you can in advance so you can clearly see when you are at work and when you are not. Plan the ‘must do’s’ first, and then the ‘nice to do’s’ for later. Getting your working time planned is particularly important if you have meetings, networking events or face to face commitments. 2. Clearly define your work time and your family time – if you feel comfortable working while children are around, then assign a room or workspace in your home for work. Be clear about how long you will be working and when you can be disturbed. Maybe a sign on the door or a silly hat when you don’t want to be disturbed – although, be prepared for giggling if you embrace the silly hat idea too enthusiastically! 22

The Source

3. Keep your children occupied – consider giving them an activity to work on for an hour; perhaps a Lego challenge, or write a story or make a film. A few quick emails or sorting out paperwork might be about all you can expect to achieve and this will certainly cut down on any frustration when the inevitable interruptions happen! 4. Get creative with your childcare – if working at home while your children are around just isn’t an option, then you might need to look at childcare. Maybe there’s a summer camp happening near you, or try a child-care swap, if you only need a couple of hours here and there. Instead of my usual 5am alarm, I plan to take my laptop to a local café one evening for the quiet time (plus tea and cake…don’t judge!). You’ll be amazed how much you can achieve in a short time if you get focused and remove the distractions! 5. Take some holiday yourself – above all don’t forget your own relaxation time. Let your clients know in advance that you will be away so it doesn’t cause problems and give yourself a break, however short. With all of these options, it’s important to be clear about what work you need to achieve over the summer – what absolutely has to happen – and plan out what you will get done in the blocks of time you have available. Be realistic and set your expectations a little lower if necessary. Have a great summer and let me know how you get on! Hannah x

magine running in an African game reserve with wild animals watching inquisitively. A lioness observing from her patch in the grass, or maybe a giraffe craning its neck to have a better view of the trickle of runners pounding their way through dusty trails, as they sweat toward their personal best.

It is one thing to travel alongside animals on the savanna when you’re aboard overland trucks but an entirely different experience to run a half marathon alongside them. But this is exactly what our very own Al Ain based, Jude Howlett, is preparing to do this June. A UAE resident for nearly 23 years, Jude originates from the United Kingdom and is kept busy here in Al Ain by the physically challenging role of Veterinary Nurse for the Al Ain Zoo. But Jude is no stranger to running long distances. “My passion for running started many years ago in England, when I worked for the London Zoo. In my spare time I used to run long distances around Regents Park and Hampstead Heath and my passion for the sport escalated from there.” Jude trains regularly here in Al Ain with Simba Chikona of Fitness Edge and The Al Ain Hash House Harriers and has numerous running event involvements to boast about, including the London Marathon. But the Safaricom is unique and not just another City Marathon. Hosting 1,200 runners

Set on the 62,000 acre, Lewa Wildlife sanctuary in northern Kenya, the course takes runners on an undulating 13-mile trek through the reserve on dirt roads, across savannah plains, along river banks and through acacia woodland which is all part of the heavily protected home of over 100 rhinos. “I have ‘hashed’ in Africa before” says Jude, “so it won’t be the first time I’ve run with wildlife. I've wanted to do this event for a long time now, particularly before the old legs say no more! I feel it's a worthy cause to assist in wildlife protection and also for the necessary awareness and education of the local communities.” Since its inception, the event has raised over $5 million - last year's race alone raised $640,000. Tusk and Lewa have always shared a common goal to use wildlife conservation as a catalyst to alleviate poverty, reduce conflict, and improve education and livelihoods in rural areas rich in biodiversity. The Source would like to wish Jude the very best of luck for her half marathon challenge and we look forward to keeping our readers updated on Jude’s experience in a future issue of the magazine.

big breakthrough in battery technology is needed if the fossilfuel age is going to end, and it looks like somebody has cracked

In days of old, I was a parcel deliveryman. For eight very long years I bolted around the Melbourne CBD in a caffeine-fueled fluster, shoulder-length hair billowing as I chased down toner cartridges. I, the Toner Tornado. Eventually, the stress of the hunt made a dog’s breakfast of my nerves, and I turned to radio for succor. The popular stations seemed to be geared only for acid parties, drag racing events and lining their own pockets, so I cuddled up to the commercialfree ABC, Australia’s equivalent of the BBC. There I discovered Radio National, the station devoted to the preoccupations of what an eminent Australian socialite once referred to as "the chattering classes." With me as a listener, their audience boomed into double figures. Riding high upon those medicinal airwaves, I unexpectedly encountered Philip Adams, an Aussie legend with a background chock-a-block full of un-Australian activities. Philip was the commie who prospered in the uber-capitalist advertising industry, the delegate to the Australian Council of Trade Unions who turned up to meetings in a 26

Ferrari, the lower-class school-leaver who promoted native Australian arts culture, founded the Anti-Football League and fought for universal and free education, the rights of the environment, women, the indigenous and other marginalized groups; the collector of rare Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities. Where did he find the time? He hosted a magazine program called Late Night Live, and in my desperate state I guzzled it like mother’s milk, tuning out the traffic and the toner, happily entangling myself in the barbed humor as he and Christopher Hitchens banged on about Teresa and Clinton, Gandhi and Kissinger—the deified mortals who so got their goat. I’m afraid I left many a PA tapping her lacquered toes by a dormant photocopier while I chortled away in my van unable (or unwilling) to detach myself from the drip. Once I’d found the cure, I wasn’t about to put my health second to anybody or anything. Thanks to an Aussie mate, I recently rediscovered Late Night Live on iTunes and found Philip still going strong - older and wheezier and with a lazy delivery I assume to be the remnant of a stroke, but still the same contrarian frustrater of popular opinion and assumption he always was.

That night, he was having a go at lithiumion batteries. Together with Steve Levine, a writer on geopolitics and technology, Philip explored the idea that lithium is poised to become the new petrol. It isn’t. The batteries are too heavy and over time they lose their capacity to retain a charge. But recently a researcher named May Le Thai at the University of California discovered by accident that the addition of a cheap plexiglass-like gel to a hitherto fragile technology called Nanowires allows the manufacture of batteries which can be run through at least 200,000 cycles while retaining 100 percent of their capacity. Lithium-ion batteries, by contrast, typically last only 7000 cycles. So, there it is. Now, these days I tend to be sceptical about breakthrough technologies. I’m a tad embarrassed to admit that I got all pumped up about TerraPower, Bill Gates’s vision for putting nuclear waste to good use. That one’s a long way off, as other ‘breakthroughs’ have turned out to be (where is ethanol made from algae?) But this incarnation of nanowire tech has the makings of a winner. Cheers, Philip, once again, for the medicine. Things were getting rough around here.

Celebrities from Middle East and North Africa to front Ramadan Fundraising Campaign for Refugees Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, June 12 2016 – Thirty celebrities from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have lent their support to an ambitious fundraising campaign spearheaded by MBC Hope in support of the region’s most vulnerable refugees in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.

T

he campaign, which coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, features a 30-part daily reality TV series called “Basmit Amal”, or “Touch of Hope”, and an online donation platform. With each episode hosted by a different celebrity, over the course of the month viewers will gain insight into the hopes, fears and daily lives of those forced to flee their homeland. The series will feature inspirational stories from some of the region’s largest hosting countries where millions of refugees currently reside, including Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and Tunisia.

For Muslims around the world, Ramadan is a month of fasting and prayer that is also characterised by acts of charity. Globally, the MENA region accounts for the largest relative share of private donations to UNHCR, which reach their peak during this holy month.

in general; but mostly to Syrian refugees in particular, makes this charitable season even more meaningful. Seeing hope everywhere and creating hope where it matters most, remain our all-time commitments”. Hayek concluded: “Clearly, we intend to maintain the flame of hope alive throughout the year”.

Amin Awad, UNHCR Director for the Middle East and North Africa Bureau noted, "The Middle East and North Africa region continues to witness unprecedented levels of displacement. More than anything else, what the world needs is conflict prevention and political will to bring about peace.”

The region is also tragically home to the greatest displacement crisis of the era, namely Syria, which has caused some 4.8 million people to flee their homes to neighbouring countries and beyond.

The Middle East and North Africa region is home to refugees from countries including Syria, Iraq, Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen, Somalia and Ethiopia, many of whom have been living away from their homes for years. Alarmingly, 51% of refugees in the Middle East and North Africa were children in 2014. "Commenting on the partnership, Mazen Hayek, MBC Group’s Official Spokesman – Group Director of Commercial, PR & CSR said: “MBC Hope’s Touch of Hope campaign brings an added value this holy month by offering life-saving assistance to 20,000 refugee families. Giving our voices to displaced and needy people

Each 10-minute episode will air at primetime across the region, when families traditionally gather around the television before breaking their fast. After meeting a different group of refugees, the celebrity hosts will call on the public to offer their support through fundraising and other acts of solidarity, and guide them to the campaign’s online donation page. The series will also showcase examples of local generosity, including an Egyptian doctor who offers free surgeries for refugees, and Jordanian teenager who is raising funds for cochlear implants for children suffering from hearing impairments in Jordan’s Za’atari Camp. The show will be aired on MBC at 1500 GMT/UTC. Basmit Amal’s donation page is http://mbc.unhcr.org

John Abraham: Medical care on the sets!

Zachary Quinto, Kat Dennings and Other Celebrities React to Anton Yelchin's Death at 27 Actor Anton Yelchin, perhaps best known for playing Star Trek films as Chekov, died early Sunday morning in a car accident, his rep has confirmed to PEOPLE. He was 27.

Mishaps and injuries are part and parcel of an actor's job. There are often reports about how celebrities get hurt on the sets of their films, especially while they are performing action sequences. The same happened with John Abraham last year, who injured himself while filming for his next, in Budapest, Hungary. The actor had reportedly suffered a leg injury while performing a stunt and had to undergo surgery. Now, however, John is wellrested, and has resumed the

shoot for his next project. A source says, "John is currently shooting in Bangkok (Thailand), and has a 28-day schedule ahead of him." We are told that medical care is being provided to John on the sets. "He is making sure he does all his stunts himself, and doesn't use a body double for any of his scenes. In order to make sure he's alright, a doctor and a physiotherapist are present at all times on the set," says the source. We tried contacting the actor, but he remained unavailable for a comment.

Some parts will be shot in Australia as well, says the filmmaker. "I will return to Delhi in the first week of July as I still have some work left there. I need to shoot in schools in Delhi. The film will be screened at the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne," says the filmmaker.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office confirmed to PEOPLE that Yelchin's body was found pinned between a car and a gate at a home in Studio City, California. Authorities believe that the car was improperly parked and rolled backwards, pinning Yelchin. No cause of death has been declared yet while the coroner completes the autopsy. However, preliminary results were that he had head and chest injuries. He was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Google Is Reportedly Building An Amazon Echo Rival Google is said to be developing a product that would compete with Amazon’s Echo voice assistant, according to Recode. The gadget would look similar to Google’s OnHub wireless router, and would include Google’s search and voice recognition technology. Google likely won’t introduce the device at its developer conference next week, during which it usually makes significant product announcements, says Recode. But the firm is aiming to launch the Echo-like product this year. Google employees are calling the project “Chirp” internally. Lisa Eadicicco, Time

Google, Fiat Chrysler Team on Self-Driving Minivans Google's Self-Driving Car Project and Fiat Chrysler last week announced that they would integrate autonomous vehicle technology into 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans as part of Google's testing program. It is the first time Google has worked directly with a car manufacturer to integrate its self-driving technology into a passenger vehicle. It will add 100 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid vehicles, designed and engineered by Fiat Chrysler, to its existing self-driving test program -- more than doubling the number of cars participating in the program. Google will integrate the sensors and computers the vehicles use to navigate roads without a driver. Both companies will place a portion of their engineering teams in a facility in southeastern Michigan to speed up the development of selfdriving cars. By David Jones

MY WORLD

Beat The Heat with These Cool and Affordable

Destinations With the thermometer often pushing 50 degrees Celsius or better and the only water cool enough to shower from is safely stored inside the shut off water heater, you may be tempted to head to the poles for a bit of relief this summer. But there’s no need for extremes, especially if North America is a place that excites that old “travelling jones”.

We’ve identified five North American vacation spots that have average summer temperature highs in the cool mid-70s and are affordable for any budget. From the mountains of Breckenridge, CO, and the forests of Olympic National Park in Washington to the urban playground of San Francisco and the scenic coasts of Prince Edward Island and southern Maine, you can take a break from the heat without breaking the bank.

San Francisco Whether or not Mark Twain really did gripe about the wintry qualities of a San Francisco summer, it is true that when the summer fog rolls in off the ocean, the city’s temperature cools way down. The City by the Bay averages a cool 72 degrees during July and August, and on rare hot days, the evenings cool off quickly once the sun sets. Venture a few miles north, south, or east of the city and you’ll be back in the hot summer sun. You should have no problem keeping costs down during your California stay with many San Francisco hotels priced below $100 US. And you’ll have plenty of options for free activities, such as exploring Golden Gate Park, throwing a frisbee on Baker or Ocean Beach, and browsing at one of the many San Francisco summer street fairs. Breckenridge, CO Ski resorts often make for fun-filled, affordable summer vacation destinations because it’s low season and the mountains still offer plenty of activities. Head for the hills of Colorado and you’ll find cooler temperatures at higher elevations, as well as off-season discounts. Breckenridge is known primarily as a ski resort, but you can hike, bike, and rollerblade along paved and unpaved trails for free, or splurge on a rafting trip, horseback ride, spa day,

or round of golf. You’ll be able to visit this beautiful resort town for a fraction of wintertime costs, plus with the money you save, you can spend a little more on the area’s restaurants, shops, and attractions. Prince Edward Island With average summertime highs peaking at 73 degrees, you’ll definitely find respite from the summer heat in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The island mixes natural beauty with Canadian history and culture—PEI is the home of the fictional Anne of Green Gables—and offers many free or affordable attractions. Walk or cycle through the diverse PEI scenery on the Confederation Trail, visit historic homes and lighthouses, or attend free Celtic arts performances at the College of Piping. The official website of Prince Edward Island lists vacation package deals that include accommodations and extras. Olympic National Park Washington State is home to Olympic National Park, a rare temperate rainforest, with summertime highs between 65 and 75 degrees. If you’re up for a rugged adventure filled with stunning natural beauty, you can plan an inexpensive getaway to these parklands that line the Pacific Coast. Cool ocean breezes along stretches of beach or the shade of oldgrowth trees surrounded by glacier-capped

mountains will make you forget the high temperatures back home. For the true budget experience, pack a tent and stay at one of the 17 campgrounds in Olympic National Park. Campground fees are more than affordable and backcountry camping is allowed for a fraction of the already low campground fees. You can also stay in rustic cabins and lodges at the Log Cabin Resort which features basic cabins with no electricity or indoor plumbing or budget friendly chalets with kitchen, private bathroom, and comfy bedding. Southern Maine Coast Only an hour and a half from Boston, you can find the tranquil villages and temperate climes of the Southern Maine Coast. Wells, Ogunquit, Moody, and Cape Neddick average mid-70s temperatures in the summer, significantly cooler than nearby Portland and Kennebunkport. Coastal inlets, historic villages, and wildlife refuges make this area a perfect summer escape. And it won’t cost a cent to stroll down the Marginal Way along the water’s edge, go bird-watching at the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, or enjoy free summer concerts at Wells Harbor Park. So chill out this summer – you deserve a break from the heat! The Source
