Leaving work this week around five o’clock, I’ve noticed that the roads are deserted. No pedestrians wander by and the malls are eerily quiet. Fast forward a few hours to eleven at night and traffic is bustling, Khalifa Street throbbing and parking in the malls is pretty hard to come by. This is Al Ain in Ramadan.

As we enter week two of the holy month, I hope you and your family are having a very blessed time. Speaking to a few Al Ain residents, we asked what Ramadan meant for them. Read their answers on our education page and see how the holy month is unique for each and every family.

The significance of Ramadan is felt all over the world and, for the first time ever, the Olympic Games coincide with the occasion. In response to this, the British Muslim Society has launched ‘Iftar 2012’ an initiative aimed at encouraging all spectators and participants at the Olympics, regardless of faith, color or nationality, to come together and join an iftar this Ramadan. Our special feature looks at the Olympics in a bit more depth, focusing specifically on those athletes travelling to London from the UAE.

Environment The planet is warming up and the biggest issue facing us right now is global warming. The mercury has already climbed more than 0.8°C and the effect this has had on animals, agriculture and humans is indeed frightening… • Ice is melting worldwide, especially in the North and South poles. This includes mountain glaciers and the ice sheets covering the two poles and Greenland. • The world’s sea levels have risen faster over the past one hundred years and, by the end of this century, may increase by another 60cms.

Blood Drive Appeal in Al Ain
Al Ain’s blood bank got a boost last week as the Hilton Hotel hosted a blood donation day in association with Tawam Hospital and their ‘Every Blood Donor is a Hero’ campaign. Countless volunteers arrived at the Amiri Majlis to donate lifesaving blood to the hospital’s blood drive. As part of the celebrations of World Blood Donor Day, which was on June 14th, Tawam have been sending teams and mobile units to different locations across the city. Hamad Al Mulla, Director of the Regional Blood Bank said that the campaign “focuses on the idea that everyone potentially can become a hero by giving blood.” The Source team headed down to do their part for the campaign. The friendly nurses helped to put everyone at ease and a delicious breakfast was provided to raise donator’s sugar levels after donation.

Are First IAT Graduates The first batch of engineering, computer science, technology and energy students from the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) in Al Ain celebrated their graduation ceremony last week at Fatima Medical College. With almost 148 students graduating, Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Suhail, wired a congratulatory message to the president HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, hailing his effort to encourage and empower the women of the UAE to play their respective roles in the community. On the occasion of the graduation ceremony, HH Sheikha Shamsa advised the girls to pursue their studies in various fields of science and technology for the betterment of society and also to join the nation-building drive in all areas of knowledge-driven economic in consistence with the federal strategic plan 2020 and Economic Vision of Abu Dhabi 2030.
Gear up to Volunteer this Ramadan Emirates Foundation for Youth Development has initiated its sixth Takatof Ramadan project. The country wide volunteering initiative will see hundreds of youngsters get involved in worthwhile schemes across their communities this Ramadan. The campaign has been divided into four stages covering every day of the holy month. For the first ten days, volunteers will take part in renovating homes, painting and maintaining them and distributing food coupons, blankets and clothing. The second stage will see youngsters conduct maintenance on mosques; providing furniture and copies of the Holy Qura’n to selected places of worship. The third and fourth stages will take place in the last ten days of Ramadan and volunteers will dedicate their time to others by visiting patients in hospitals, elderly homes, orphanages and centers for people with special needs.
Emirates Foundation CEO Clare Woodcraft said, “This campaign and its titles reflect the concept of genuine social and humanitarian work and follows exactly the Takatof volunteer program’s objectives, that is creating an interactive social network amongst all community segments with the aim of easing challenges facing those in need.” Almost 26000 volunteers are registered with the Takatof project, the majority of these being Emirati. The benefiters of the Ramadan program will also be predominantly Emirati. The initiative aims to give young people a chance to give back to their society, something which is even more prominent in the holy month of Ramadan. The “Takatof Ramadan” project was first launched in 2007 to enhance the principle of social responsibility and to provide true opportunities for people to help needy families. If you are interested in taking part you can register at www.takatof.ae.
Chess Parks for Kids Al Ain Municipality last week announced that they will build six chess areas in parks around the city. The project is aimed at enhancing children’s concentration levels and developmental thinking in a fun and interactive manner. Children will be able to enjoy a game of chess alongside the other recreational facilities on offer in the parks. The municipality released a statement explaining “The development of children shouldn’t be imposed on schools and parents only, but the responsibility also lies on all entities of the country.” The chess centers will be at various parks and gardens, including Al Mubazzarah, Al Foah, Al Muraijab, Al Taweah and Al Wadi. Each chess center will have a space of 64 square meters and will also include playgrounds, walking tracks, various games and relaxation areas. HSBC Money Laundering
Scandal
The US Senate slammed HSBC Holdings Plc for a decade of lax controls that allowed money laundering by HSBC affiliates to alleged terrorists and drug cartels in countries including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Mexico.
Warning Over Herbal Products A recent lecture, organized by the Abu Dhabi Municipality, urged residents to consult expert medical advice before using herbal products, even if advised to do so by beauticians and salon staff.
According to Gulf News, Senator Carl Levin, the Michigan Democrat who heads the subcommittee responded, “HSBC used its US bank as a gateway into the US financial system for some HSBC affiliates around the world to provide US dollar services to clients while playing fast and loose with US banking rules.”
According to Gulf News, Fathiya Abdullah Al Marzouqi, Head of Awareness at Zayed Complex Herbal Research and Traditional Medicine explained, “Herbal products are highly perishable and improper storage can cause harmful fungi and microbes on them. Parlor attendants lack the medical expertise for coping with any side effects arising from the use of herbal products.”
The Senate investigation also accused the primary regulatory of HSBC’s US bank for failing to take appropriate action after repeated findings of violations. Levin remarked “The kind of failures HSBC exhibited should be cause for US regulators to consider whether to revoke its charter.” Irene Dorner, President and chief executive of HSBC’s US business, expressed remorse and acknowledged the bank’s failure and shortcomings to the Senate.
Municipal inspectors have been briefed about the proper use and storage of herbs and oils and are carrying out inspections on all salons and beauty parlors in the city to ensure that they are complying with public health and sanitation standards.

for UAE’s Nuclear Plant Presidential Order Releases Prisoners Almost 837 prisoners across the UAE, serving terms for various criminal cases, have been freed on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan on the orders of the president His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Prisoners who have been behind bars due to financial issues will have their liabilities and debts paid by the President on this auspicious occasion, giving them the chance to reintegrate into society as law-abiding citizens and assist in nation building and development of the country. “The pardon inculcates positive motives in the hearts and minds of the pardoned prisoners, spurring them to set their conduct right and follow the right path. It is a recipe of optimism about the future and a catalyst for those still behind the bars to follow their suit to get that privilege in future,” commented the UAE’s Attorney General Salem Saeed Kubaish. 10

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) laid the foundation of the UAE’s first ever nuclear power plant at the coastal site of Baraka last week, making the UAE the first nuclear power producing Arab Nation. Sources at the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) confirmed that the board of management approved the construction license for the first two reactors. The Chief Nuclear Officer of Korea Electric Power (Kepco) Jun-Yeon BYun said, “We will have the first concrete pouring, I’m very happy.” Kepco are the lead company in the projects US$ 20 billion contract. The event is significant for the global nuclear industry which stopped the implantation of various nuclear powers after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. However, according to the UN nuclear regulatory body, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), China was the last nation to get on board with a new nuclear program back in 1985 when its first reactor was built.
FANR’s team comprising of 60 individuals have been reviewing the project alongside three other international consulting firms for almost 18-months now and have worked in close cooperation with the IAEA as well as ENEC. Els Grabs Open Win Golfing veteran, Ernie Els, won his first major Open since 2002 in last week’s British Open at Royal Lytham in a truly dramatic fashion. The South African could hardly believe it when he grabbed the title by one stroke after Australian Adam Scott suffered a nightmare last minute collapse. Scott had dominated the game and went into the final four holes with a four shot lead. With his eyes on his first major, the young Aussie devastatingly bogeyed every hole, allowing Els to grab the title, thanks to an earlier birdie. Laying his hands on the silverware, Els couldn’t help hide his grin but took time out to console the shell-shocked runner up saying, “I’m so happy that I’ve won but I’ve been on the other end more times than I’ve actually won and it’s not a good feeling. I feel for him but, thankfully, he’s young enough…Adam’s got the next ten years.” Finishing a brave seven-under par on 273, Ernie ended a decade of disappointment. Scott finished six under par on 274 ahead of Tiger Woods and Brandt Snedeker who both finished three under par on 277.

Replaces Maradona Frenchmen Bruno Metsu has replaced Diego Maradona as head coach at Al Wasl Club after signing a two-year contract last week. The enigmatic Frenchmen comes in after great success as the national coach of Qata. He is also known for leading Al Ain Club to victory in 2003 and succeeding as the UAE’s national coach in 2007. He is probably best known internationally for his part in leading Senegal to a surprise victory over France in the opening of the World Cup in 2002. Argentinean Maradona was ousted from the Dubai club after failing to deliver results. His appointment certainly brought the much needed media spotlight to Al Wasl’s grounds but expected victories did not follow and his departure comes a year before his contract was due to end. With over 10 years experience in the regions’ football arena, Bruno Metsu comes in hoping to be the savior Al Wasl so desperately needs.
Al Mutaiwei maintains World Cup Challenge After a long three month lay-off period, Emirati rally racer Khalifa Al Mutaiwei of Al Fazza Rally Team, along with German co-driver Andreas Schulz, finished an impressive overall second in round four of the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies held in Baja last week. This year’s Baja Spain was held across a 200km stage that ran through the remote areas of Monegros in Aragon between the National II Highway and the Alcubierre mountains.
A delighted Al Mutaiwei told Emirates News, “This is exactly the result I was looking for and everything went according to plan. I am so happy to finish second for the second time here in Spain. My result also helps me to bridge the gap with Els was shocked but delighted to take the Open Schlesser. We have finished four rounds and there are four left. I also showed today
that I have made good progress in my performance event on event.” Racing in his mini ALL4 Racing car, Al Mutaiwei managed to beat Dakar racer, Frenchman Jean-Louis Schlesser by finishing Saturday’s shorter stage in the fourth quickest time. He was then well placed, beginning Sunday’s final 202.35km in third position. Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel, current Dakar rally title holder, and his co-driver claimed an out an out victory in the Mini All4 on Sunday’s final racing stage to take his third Baja victory. The event saw Al Mutaiwei returning to the racing scene after his appearance in the last round of the race held in Qatar back in April.

t’s finally here, after four years of waiting the Olympics have come around again and, for the third time in history, they’re taking place in London. The UK’s capital is the only British city ever to have hosted the games and the only city in the world to have hosted them on three separate occasions. Here, in the UAE, athletes and sports stars have been preparing hard for the games and have had some promising pre-Olympic results. The country first sent a team of athletes to the LA Olympics way back in 1984. Now, in 2012, and with participants in six different events, the UAE are hoping to show the world the huge progress it has made in all sports across all the emirates. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the National Olympic Committee proclaimed, “Our appearance in the 2012 London Games is the biggest of its kind in the history of the UAE, which underlines the great attention that the country’s sport has been receiving from our wise leadership.” HH Sheikh Ahmed will be present on the 27th July, alongside other UAE delegates, to watch Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum carry the UAE flag in the opening ceremony when the eyes of the world will be on London.
We take a look at the country’s hopefuls for the 2012 games…
Football Having qualified for the first time ever, the UAE’s Olympic football squad has kept football fans buzzing with excitement. Having enjoyed success in their pre-Olympic preparations, the team is hoping to continue this on Thursday 26th July, as they take on Uruguay in their opening match at Old Trafford - the home of English football giants Manchester United. The UAE’s usually strong band of supporters may be a little weak this time, as the competition conflicts with the holy month of Ramadan but, there will be a lot of supporting vibes being sent their way from the Emirates.

FEATURE Drawn in Group A, the soccer stars will face some stiff competition with hosts Great Britain, and African stars Senegal to defeat, as well as the strong Uruguayan team. Coach Mahdi Ali has been pleased with his team’s pre-tournament training which finished with an impressive 4-2 victory over New Zealand and believes that his young squad, the eldest player being only 29-years-old, can do the country proud. Al Ain’s Dawoud Sulaiman and Omar Abdulrahman are key players in the team and we can’t wait to cheer them on from the garden city. The UAE Olympic football squad is made up of: Abdulaziz Hussain, Abdulaziz Sanqour, Ahmed Ali, Ahmed Khalil, Ali Al Ameri, Ali Kasheif, Ali Mabhkout, Dawoud Sulieman, Habib Fardan, Ismail Al Hammadi, Mohammed Fawzi, Mohammed Jabar, Omar Abdulrahman, Ismail Matar, Khalid Essa, Rashid Essa, Saad Suroor, Saoud Saeed, Mohammed Ahmed, Khamis Ismail,Hamdan Al Kamali, Haboush Saleh and Amer Abudlrahman. Their matches will be played on July 26th, 29th and August 1st.
Athletics When it comes to athletics, the country has two participants. Firstly, triple jumper Mohammed Abbas Darwish who is aiming to beat his personal best of 16.80 meters despite having had a lack of training in the run-up to the competition. The men’s triple jump event will start on Tuesday August 7th at the main London Olympic Stadium. Secondly, Betlhem

FEATURE Desalegn, who will be going for gold in the women’s 1500m race which kicks off on August 6th and who is one of only two women in the UAE Olympic squad.
Judo For the first time ever, the country will send a jodaka to compete in the Olympics. Humaid Al Derei claimed his first competitive medal in Egypt when he was just 15 and, since then, has worked hard to develop his judo skills. This hard work has paid off and Humaid is looking forward to representing his country in the men’s 66kg contest which gets underway on the 29th July. Having attended a training camp in Jordan earlier in the summer, Al Derei enthuses “My aim in London will be to go and give my best.”
Shooting Shooting is the only sport in which the United Arab Emirates have ever taken an Olympic medal so, naturally, there’s a lot of pressure on this year’s participants to do the country proud. HH’s Sheikh Juma bin Dalmook and Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum will participate in the double trap and skeet events respectively whilst Daher Al Aryani, competing in the men’s trap, will make up the rest of the shooting team. Watch Sheikh Saeed participate on July 30 - 31 and Sheikh Juma and Al Aryani on August 5 - 6.
Swimming With only one competitor in all of the swimming events, Mubarak Al Besher is getting set to make a splash in the 100m breaststroke competition. Having trained hard for the games with a training camp in Spain followed by twice daily sessions at the sprawling Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex, the 24-year-old is aiming to break an Arab record in the sport when he competes on 28th July.
Weightlifting The UAE have only one competitor in the weightlifting events at the London Olympics and, interestingly enough, it’s a woman! 14
thesourceuae.com
17-year-old Khadija Mohammad will become the third woman in history to represent the UAE when she competes on August 3rd in the women’s 75kg event. The only weightlifter in the entire GCC to make it to the games, she realizes the importance of her participation, “I got to London with the sole desire of making a statement on behalf of women from the UAE and the Gulf countries. I realize the importance of what I will achieve just by being there at the Olympics, where the attention of the entire world will be on me,” she told press at the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare. The Olympic Games have been with the world since 766BC and is an event that unites people the world over, time and again. This year is the first time that the games have coincided with the Muslim feast of Ramadan and, as part of the Olympic celebrations, the British Muslim Community have launched ‘Iftar2012’, inviting Muslims and non-Muslims, people of all colors and races, people of faith and no faith to come together in the spirit of the games and enjoy a fastbreaking meal together. As Olympic fever gets set to sweep the nation, be sure to show your support for your country and for the UAE’s biggest ever delegation to the games. Encourage and support these talented athletes, and enjoy the excitement, as they aim to unite countries the world over in 16 days of sports, peace and unity.

Box Sets for Blokes
By Hayley Skirka
It’s summer, it’s too hot to go out, loads of your mates have migrated home or are off on fancy holidays and you’re stuck here, in the desert, wondering what to get up to. Here’s where bingeing on TV shows helps: a couple of DVDs, a pizza and a few drinks and you have the perfect Friday afternoon. We take a look at a couple of our favorites…
Top Gear
Stick this British show on the box and live out your ultimate car fantasies through the satirical eyes of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. Between them, they test drive all manner of exotic cars (think Maseratis, Bugattis, Ferraris), challenge celebs to take on The Stig (an unknown, disguised expert racing driver) and show off their motoring expertise whilst having a good old laugh about everything.
Entourage
If you’ve ever wanted to be ridiculously rich, have women falling at your feet and spend a ridiculous amount of time chilling with your bezzie mates then this show is for you. Vinnie Chase is a loaded Hollywood actor who spends his time hanging out with his brother Johnny, pals Eric and Turtle, and his arrogant agent Ari Gold. Living in a huge LA mansion, the ‘entourage’ and Vinnie get up to all sorts and their escapades make for amusing viewing on a hot afternoon.
Game of Thrones
In the very first episode, a ten-year-old child is thrown from a tower, crippling him for life. This is just the start of the bloody, gory, violent happenings that Game of Thrones seems to be all about. Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical lands of Westeros in a medieval-ish fantastical realm. Watch the gruff Starks, the pompous Lannisters and the primal Dothraki battle each other, fight against the elements and oppose mythical creatures and legends. With the tagline ‘When you play Game of Thrones, you win or you die’ it’s a violent, blood-filled cliffhanger spectacular that somehow keeps you coming back for more.

Almas Musa Albuloshi is something of a rarity. Born and brought up in Dubai he is a hardworking man, serving the police force and striving to be an upstanding citizen of the country he loves so much. He is rare because he has a passion, a deep love for a sport that is not too prominent in Emirati society. His passion is bodybuilding. And it’s something that he’s worked hard to excel in. Bodybuilding wasn’t always Almas’s passion. When he was just eleven-years-old he showed great promise in football. He joined Al Naser Sports Club and trained there for over a decade, until he was twenty-three years old. During this time, he formed a deep friendship with his team captain, Mohammed Al Ahli. He also found himself becoming interested in the sport of bodybuilding and, when Mohammed suggested that he would excel in it, Almas decided it was worth a go and began to investigate exactly what the sport entailed. Bodybuilding, for those of you who are not too sure is defined as ‘the act of putting on muscle by working out and shaping one’s diet to put on more muscle mass.’ Competitors in the sport are judged upon their physical appearance and the demonstrations that they produce during competitions. At present, there is a campaign to have bodybuilding adopted as an Olympic sport. Although the contest itself is non-athletic, there is a huge amount of training and preparation required by bodybuilders to reach their peak. Don’t get bodybuilding confused with weightlifting. The focus in competitive bodybuilding is a specific aesthetic and balance of muscle mass, rather than a feat of strength or agility. When Almas looked into the bodybuilding world, he felt immediately that it was something in which he could shine. His years of football training meant that his “body was in the shape that would allow [him] to do that.” At this time, the sport was fairly new in the Emirates and so, Almas’s choice to leave football for bodybuilding was certainly an unusual one for a young Emirati. Almas agrees, “It was unusual, but I managed to convince my family and my brothers and especially my mother, they were very supportive.” He also thanks Mohammed Al Ahli for his support as he began carving his way into the discipline.

With his family on board, Almas began training, and training hard. As he has to be on top of his physical form, the young sportsman works out for two to three hours, six days a week, every week of the year. He has also adopted new eating habits in order to change the form of his body, “I follow a certain diet that is healthy and very useful to me.” This was eight years ago and the benefits of his hard work are really starting to show. In 2009, Almas proudly lifted the World Championship title in Dubai under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and was ranked as fifth in the entire world. Then, in 2011, he took first place in the Emirates Championship. His biggest triumph was yet to come. Later that same year, Almas participated in the Skydive Dubai Beach Body Building Championship and was ecstatic when he grabbed first place, beating 55 other competitors to take the title ‘Champion of World Champions. These achievements, as great as they are, are not enough to allow Almas to sit back and rest. He tells us “In September this year, I hope I can win the Asia Championship.” Almas’s passion is all too evident. Bodybuilding is something he’s eager to talk about and he is exceptionally proud of the recognition he has received. “Day by day, my love and understanding of this sport has increased and I feel so happy when I reach a new level and see the changes in my body.” As well as the physical training required, bodybuilders also have a lot of mental stress to deal with, especially when competing regularly. This isn’t something that fazes Almas; he simply adjusts to cope with the pressure. “I try not to speak to anyone and try to be alone in the run up to competitions, at least until I reach a certain weight. Before any tournament, bodybuilders get nervous because they have lost so much weight and they don’t have enough water in their body.” This is required, he explains, in order to show the muscles in their best light. Having taken part in bodybuilding for almost a decade, Almas has some important pointers for new comers to the sport. It’s important to practice equally, working all parts of the body rather than focusing on one area while neglecting others. He advises athletes to take care of their health by eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, learning to breathe properly and introducing diversity into training schedules in order to prevent boredom. Although the sport has male and female competitors worldwide, Almas explains that “in our religion and society, it is forbidden for women to compete.” Before we leave our interview with Mr. Albuloshi, we were keen to learn some life lessons from a man with such discipline, dedication and passion. Almas, friendly as ever, was happy to oblige...
Life Lessons 1. Be confident in yourself 2. Don’t underestimate the virtue of patience. 3. It’s all about lifting the weights of life so that you push away all the negativity of life and build your strength, not only physically but also psychologically. 4. To be able to face weakness, fight disease and instead be balanced; that is what body building means.
Almas works out six days a week, for two to three hours a day.

Musaharati with his magical stick!
Is ha ya nayem wahhed al dayem By Hanadi Jamil
Ramadan... dawn....food...beats! No! It’s not a party… it’s the drumbeats of Musaharati, the anonymous man who comes before dawn in a bid to wake you up for Suhoor before the Cannon fires and fasting begins. Hundreds of years ago, the phenomena of Musaharati appeared, introducing a man who volunteers during
Ramadan to wake up the people of his, and surrounding, neighborhoods. Originating from Egypt, the custom spread to many places including Levant, Mesopotamia, the Arabian Peninsula and many more The Musaharati would leave his home long after midnight, led by lantern-holding children, and beat with his stick on a drum. Very useful in days before alarm clocks! Despite today’s huge technology advancements which sees clocks, alarms, phones and apps all fully equipped to raise worshippers from their slumber, this legendry character is still one of the many rituals that characterizes Ramadan until this very day.

URBAN Woman

Feeling fashionably By Mehak Alam
Blue is always in fashion, thanks to denim. This season however, it seems like it’s even more in the spotlight with a huge variety of blue hues appearing on everything from toenails to handbags. From eye-shielding electric blue to bright, soothing aquamarine, there’s a shade of this vibrant, versatile color to suit everyone.
Nailing it! Beyonce wore a bright blue manicure for almost two months…was it an obsession with her newlyborn-daughter, Blue Ivy Carter or was she simply keeping her nails on trend? Either way, if it’s good enough for Beyonce it should be good enough for us too! Cobalt blue suits darker complexions while fair complexions can opt for a more of a funky, lighter color blue.
Blue, Blue, Blue Suede Shoes It’s all gone a little bit Elvis this season with blue shoes, suede or not, being the in thing. With celeb’s Carey Mulligan, Alessandro Ambrosia and Khloe Kardashian all wearing them, our high street favorite stores such as Next, Zara and H&M have been quick to commission funky blue heels of their own.
Classic blue jeans will always be in fashion and can be worn for work or play. Go smart with with some heels and a blouse when you head to the office, pair them with a cute top for heading out with friends or wear with a white fitted tee-shirt when you hit the mall.
Blue-Eyed Girl! For those of you who are blessed with natural baby blues, you should take advantage of this and make sure they get noticed! Certain colors complement blue eyes whilst others build contrast. If you’re olive skinned, opt for gold and darker browns. For paler ladies, go for blue, green or a pastel bronze. For eyes that pop, use blue mascara or go darker with black mascara for dramatic effect. Brown works best for everyday blue eyes, creating a natural contrast.
Bags of Blue Looking for the perfect blue accessory to compliment your outfit? Then get your hands on a bright blue handbag. Whether you opt for a small clutch: to offset your evening dress, a medium sized tote: perfect for shopping or a big blue beach bag for hitting the pool, you can keep everything together while looking bang on trend.

Katy Per ry Blue, in short, is the color of the season! Be it aqua or royal…any shade will work and anywhere. So don’t feel blue this season, stay bright and beautiful by wearing it on your nails, bags or shoes. Or, if you’re feeling ever so adventurous, you can opt for blue hair a la Miss Katy Perry!

reaking a bad habit is a little like breaking up with your best friend: You share memories with them but have serious differences. The old habit will always be a part of your life but you need to find ways to cope with them.
Bad habits are things that we do consistently over time that impact negatively on our lives. They can cause pain, frustration, embarrassment or anger. Habits make who you are and the key is to break the bad ones. If you know how to change your habits, then you’re on your way to making significant improvements in your life.
Here are some tips to get you started. Become aware of your habits You cannot change something that you’re not aware of. Only after identifying it can you start to gain awareness of it. For example, if you have a habit of eating chocolate every evening before going to bed, you can get rid of all the chocolate in your kitchen unit. Off course, you might still head to the kitchen for a few nights only to find it bare. After a while, the deprivation will finally sink in and you would stop making those trips. Replace your chocolate habit with a fruit one. One habit at a time Focus on changing one habit a month. The new habit will require discipline and additional physical and mental resources. A month is a sufficient amount of time for your new behavior to be conditioned to become a habit. Don’t try to change too many habit at once or you run the risk of none of those desired habits becoming permanent ones. Replace your bad habit with a good habit Quitting a bad habit creates a void and you need to develop a good habit to tackle that empty space. For example, if you’re in the habit of negative thinking use it as a trigger to change your thoughts to more positive ones. If you eat junk food for comfort or pleasure then find a healthier way to channel this need such as calling a friend. Remember, if you don’t find a way to replace your lost need, it’s going to be very easy to relapse. Avoid people and situations that might trigger your habit Sometimes you can identify the triggers that are more likely to bring out your bad habit. These can involve people or locations. If perhaps, social drinking with friends triggers you wanting a cigarette then avoid meeting your friends at places that serve alcohol. 24
thesourceuae.com
Keep it simple If your change creates more pain than joy then it’s going to be hard to stick to. Your change should involve only one or two rules, no more. For example, if you hate going to the gym, find alternative solutions, such as exercise classes or fitness DVDs, that you find fun and that suit your lifestyle. Simple rules create habit and complex rules merely breed resentment. Experiment You won’t know if a different habit will work unless you try it. In the process of changing your habits allow for some flexibility. You might have to modify things a little to get them to suit your life. Don’t try to follow habits because you think you should, but because you’ve tested them and they work. Practice makes perfect The point of a new habit is that it should get to the stage where no thought is required. How do you achieve this? You need to practice the new habit as often as possible to ensure that it’s drilled in. Reward yourself Perhaps the money you save on cigarettes could be used to splurge on a nice holiday. Or, if you’re trying to break a chocolate habit, reward yourself once a week with a piece of your favorite bar. The initial stages of breaking your habit will b e difficult and will require sheer willpower and motivation. Whenever you think that the ‘going is tough’, just remember that it won’t be for long and simply keep moving forward.
MY EMIRATE
Cheering on the Camels By Khudayja Saloojee
M
y fascination with camels started on my first visit to a zoo. As a child, I believed that camels stored water in their humps and that’s why they were able to withstand the harsh conditions of the desert. As an adult, my attraction hasn’t really faded and living in the UAE has given me many opportunities to discover these enchanting animals for myself. I’m not a huge horse racing fan but excitement pumps through my body during camel racing season. Camel racing is a unique part of the UAE’s heritage and the original Bedouin lifestyle. It was traditionally organized to mark important social occasions such as wedding ceremonies, community festivals or visits of Sheikhs to villages. Today, camel racing is a well-organized sport that attracts a large number of spectators including members of the ruling families, nationals and expatriates. The camels have robot jockeys firmly placed on their backs, which are controlled via a remote control
by the owner who is being driven around on the outer edge of the track. I love watching the races and find myself cheering the camels on while marveling at how fast these awkward animals can go. The racing season is normally from October to April. Races take place on weekend mornings with additional races on public holidays. The weekly camel race competitions are held at Al Maqam Tracks near Al Ain and Al Wathba Tracks just east of the Abu Dhabi and Al Ain Road. The competitions offer valuable prizes and millions of Dirhams are awarded to the owners of winning camels. Head to the racetracks as early as possible to soak up the exhilarating atmosphere, I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. INFO: Entrance to the races is free. MY WORLD Few pleasures beat the thrill of taking to the open road, top down, pedal floored, countryside rushing by like a runaway train! And, there’s no better way to rev your engines than by conquering the legendary German Alpine Road or ‘Deutsche Alpenstrasse’. This stunningly scenic route winds 450 km through the majestic panorama of the Bavarian Alps, from Lindau on Lake Constance all the way to Berchtesgaden on Lake Königssee. Always fans of motor based activities, the Germans have built wide lanes with generous speed limits, plenty of straights, moderate hill climbs and the occasional hairpin twist. Exhilarating, yet comfortably safe even at high speeds! Alas, we had to trade in our dreams of racing through the countryside in a bright red convertible for a slightly sturdier ride in our trusted family station wagon. Never mind, at least the old gal was German! Fantastic driving aside, the Alpenstrasse also boasts unrivalled scenery. With over 21 mountain lakes, 25 castles, clusters of palaces and abbeys, spa resorts and several hundred peaks it certainly is a feast for the eyes. Charming villages are linked by series’ of bridges, viaducts, tunnels and mountain passes, where you can sample Bavaria’s warmth in its merry musicians, malt based beverage gardens and traditional inns. The surrounding Alps are a paradise for active holidaymakers or for those simply seeking a relaxing break. There’s something for everyone; winter sports enthusiasts, culture aficionados, wellness fans and natureloving hikers.
Castle Neuschwanstein was the inspiration behind Disney’s Cinderella Castle
We had driven through Switzerland to reach Lindau which is situated near the meeting point of the Austrian, German and Swiss borders. This idyllic little town reveals a maze of streets in its medieval city centre, a lovely lakeside promenade and is home to the only lighthouse in Bavaria. From Lindau we zoomed over to Fussen, not far from the famous castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. A visit to Neuschwanstein, or Schloss as it is known in German, piqued my daughters’ curiosity as it was the inspiration behind Walt Disney’s design for Cinderella’s Disneyland castle. Going further east, we ventured outdoors to paddle in Alpine lakes, complete some Nordic walking & bicycle trails, try our hand at boating and attend some festivals around the posh town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. These two villages were joined together to create the township back in 1936 for the sake of the Winter Olympics and yet each has retained its distinct characteristics. Garmisch is swanky and expensive, while Partenkirchen is a little cheaper and more traditionally charming. Nearby is the imposing Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak from which hikers enjoy spectacular views. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen we veered off towards the Bavarian capital of Munich, but not before a quick pit-stop at the spectacular baroque styled Ettal Abbey. Among other things, the monastery boasts a bookstore, an art publishing house, a hotel, a cheese factory and several smaller companies. Munich, with its beautifully restored buildings and charming character didn’t fail to disappoint. The Aplenstasse ends in Berchtesgaden, an apt conclusion with its precipitous scenery, Germany’s second tallest mountain, the Watzmann, and the country’s highest and cleanest lake, the Königssee. Taking to the open road makes every cent spent on petrol seem worthwhile thanks to the freedom and flexibility it gives you to chop and change plans at the last minute, while clocking up mileage turns an ordinary adventure into the most extraordinary experience. Whether you’re doing it in a cheeky sports car or your trusted jalopy, it’s definitely the stuff memories are made of! thesourceuae.com
