Letter from the Editor With Ramadan almost over, excitement is building for Eid Al Fitr! There’s a lot of shopping, cooking and decorating going on and the sense of anticipation is unmissable! Delving into the occasion, we take a look at how Muslims around the world celebrate this special time, as well as taking time out to talk to Al Ain residents about what makes Eid special for them. In London, the 2012 Olympics drew to a close this week with a spectacular star-studded show! The Spice Girls, George Michael, The Kaiser Chiefs and Queen all took to the stage for one big after-party to celebrate the achievements of all 10960 athletes that took part in the games! I’d like to send a special congratulatory note to all the UAE’s athletes returning home. True, we didn’t get any medals but, as we all know, it’s the taking part that counts! With Eid holidays just around the corner, why not indulge your inner adventurer and take a trip to the wild terrain of Northern South Africa? Read all about this rugged landscape in our My World pages. If you’re looking for something a bit closer to home, how about a fascinating fact finding trip to the Al Ain National Museum? Finally, be sure to have a look at our diary page for concerts and events coming up across the country. Here, at The Source, we’re also looking forward to celebrating Eid. Some of us are headed for Lebanon, others to Sri Lanka, some to Jordan or Oman and the rest of us, well, we’re just looking forward to some welldeserved respite. Abattoirs All Set for Eid Slaughterhouses in the Garden City of Al Ain are all geared up to meet the increasing demands of the end of Ramadan followed by the auspicious occasion of Eid.

Schools Under Change With the advent of the new school year upon them, Abu Dhabi National Education Council (ADEC) has implemented various changes to its governed schools. These changes are part of ADEC’s drive to meet the needs of all regions in the emirate, as issued in a decree by ADEC’s Director General of ADEC, Dr. Mughair Khamis Al Khaili. Focusing on changes in Al Ain, almost seven hundred students from Al Masoudi and Al Jimi districts will be transferred to the new Cycle-1 school, Al Bayraq in Al Towaya area.
No Grace SPEED For Motorists As a part of the government’s strategy to cut road deaths to zero by the year 2030, Abu Dhabi traffic authorities have decided to begin gradually decreasing the grace speed limit on roads, and wholly abolishing it by 2015. The reduced grace speed limits will affect both motorways and internal roads, where currently drivers are given a grace of 20kph above the designated speed limit. According to Emirates 247, Chief Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi commented “From the beginning of next year, we will start cutting the grace speed limit gradually so the drivers will get used to the new limit. All externals and internal roads in Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and The Western Region will have no grace speed after two years.”
Two additional kindergartens, namely Al Yahar KG and Zakher KG, have also been constructed. As part of the council’s female teaching program, Abu Bakr Al Siddique School and Al Shaheen School will be staffed solely by female teachers while Al Sadara, Al Nahyaniah and Al Ain Schools will have an influx of female staff.
The special arrangements are a result of a ban laid down by Al Ain Municipality, forbidding citizens from slaughtering their own animals in their houses or neighborhoods in a bit to prevent the spread of disease. A total of eight slaughterhouses have undergone maintenance and are now ready to accommodate the increased demands of customers with a comparatively increased number of butchers, working under the supervision of veterinary doctors. All abattoirs operate from 6am-6pm, except the central abattoir that opens from 6am1pm.
Al Sariyah School will have co-education classes from KG1 to Grade 1, with female only classes commencing in Grade 2. Al Mesk Kindergarten will be closed and its 300 students moved to the new premises named Al Jimi KG. Finally, Oud Al Tawba Cycle-1 School will merge its students with those at Ibn Khaldoun School to create a new Ibn Khaldoun School.
All Set for Al Ain Air Show The 2012 Al Ain Aerobatic Show has moved from its original January schedule to the December UAE National Day weekend. The 10th annual series will take place from 30 November – 2 December at Al Ain International Airport. According to AME.Info, Faisal Al Sheikh, Events Manager, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, commented “This new schedule which includes the Friday/Saturday weekend and the December 2 Sunday public holiday will give UAE residents and international visitors that chance to travel to Al Ain for a long weekend break, taking in the show and the other attractions in this city which has just been inscribed as a UNESCO Heritage Site for its rich archeological and historic treasures.” The show promises to be a spectacular event with daring aircraft aerobatics and an exciting daily program. The Al Ain Aerobatic Show has become a key fixture on ADTA’s expanding calendar of events. thesourceuae.com

Emirates Photography Contest Open Hosted by Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, this year’s competition is themed ‘Cultural Reflections’, and is seen as a way to foster the concept of understanding diverse cultures in society. For the first time ever, the competition will feature a special recognition for Fine Arts in Photography. The competition will see over AED 400000 being awarded to winners who will be selected by a jury international experts and acclaimed Arab photographers. Results will be announced in Abu Dhabi in November.
The seventh annual International Emirates Photography Competition (EPC) 2012, held under the patronage of the International Federation of photographic Art (FIAP) has now began receiving entries from individual amateur and professional photographers as well as from internationally placed photo clubs. The deadline for entries is September 30, 2012.
Asides from cash prizes, winners will see their work exhibited for two months at the Manarat Al Saadiyat exhibition center on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. They will also receive a limited edition book, by the Photographic Society of America and the United Photographers International Organization. Interested candidates can submit their work online at www.ephotoc.net
Eid Al Fitr Holidays
Eid al Fitr holidays for ministries and federal government institutions will begin Friday, 17th August 2012, which corresponds with 29th Ramadan 1433. Holidays will continue until the 3rd of the month of Shawwal with work resuming on the 4th, according to the circular issued by Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qattami, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources. This means that, should Ramadan have 30 days and Eid fall on Sunday the 19th of August, then the public sector will holiday from August 17th to 21st. Saqr Ghobash, Minister of Labour, also issued a circular announcing the first and second day of Shawwal as holidays for the private sector. On this occasion, Al Qattami offered greetings to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa, Vice-President and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammad and their Highnesses The Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates.
Does Life Exist After Death? A University of California Riverside philosophy professor, John Martin Fisher, has been awarded a three-year $5 million grant by the John Templeton Foundation to study ‘Does life exist after death’? According to Yahoo News, the university’s website announced that there have been many anecdotal reports of the afterlife, but there has been “no comprehensive and rigorous, scientific study of global reports about near-death experience and other experiences, or of how belief in immortality influences human behavior.”
Residents in Abu Dhabi can now head to the recently expanded Swimming Beach at Abu Dhabi Corniche.
The research will look at a range of phenomena, including heaven, hell, purgatory and karma. The grant is the largest ever awarded to a humanities professor at UC Riverside, and one of the largest given to an individual at the university.
The newly expanded areas can accommodate up to 3000 more people, making the total capacity of the beaches 15000. Access to the beach will be unrestricted but designated swimming hours are between 7am and 6pm for safety purposes.

Abu Dhabi Beach Reopened Dr. Badriya Al Daheri, Director of Community Services at the municipality explained “Following the expansion, the municipality is focusing on addressing safety and security requirements at the beach. Five qualified lifeguards and instructors are available to ensure the safety of visitors.” Other beach facilities, which include football pitches and children’s playgrounds, are accessible until midnight.
OLYMPICS END WITH A MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA As the curtain drew to a close on the London 2012 Olympics, Brit icons the Spice Girls, George Michael and the remaining members of Queen rocked the stadium in a spectacular finish to what has been an amazing international sporting event. It has been 17 days of sporting magnificence with various new records and a whole host of memorable moments. For the first time, every nation and sport included female competitors, with Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar making history by sending women for the first time. Jamaican Usain Bolt retained all three of his athletic titles and created a new Olympic record in the 100 meter sprint. US athlete, Michael Phelps, became the most decorated Olympian ever, having now
amassed a whopping 22 Olympic medals. The USA took the top spot when it came to medals, with a haul of 146. China came second with 87 medals and the Brits took their biggest medal haul since 1908 to finish in third place with 65 medals. Although the UAE did not manage to climb onto the medal board, the country sent their biggest ever delegation to the event, with over thirty athletes securing a place. The first ever Emirati female competitor in weightlifting, as well as a spirited performance from the country’s football team, were just some of the moments of which the UAE can be proud. As Olympic founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, said, “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part.”

Danube Make it a Double
Last Friday’s Indoor Cricket Ramadan Cup saw team Danube come out on top at the event held at the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Global Cricket Academy indoor stadium. After an unlucky toss, which went in opponents Dubai Material Supply Centre’s (DBMSC) favour, Danube battled hard to win by 15 runs. The win saw Danube successfully defend their title from last year’s event to lift the cup two years in a row.
Father & Son Dominate Bowling
When Mohammad Khalifa Al Qubaisi, president of the UAE Bowling Federation (UAEBF), stunned everyone by taking part in, and subsequently winning, the open bowling competition held as part of the 16th Armed Forces Officers Club Ramadan Festival last week, his son Sultan Al Qubaisi, added to his delight by claiming the Under 20 title for himself.
City Trial for AbdulRahman
The participation of the country’s bestbowler, Muhammad Khalifa Al Qubaisi, added a touch of glamour to the event. The 1988 World Cup winner shared the bowling lane with former Asian champion, Shaker Ali, and many other respected names from the bowling world.
Al Ain Club’s Omar Abdulrahman flew to the UK last Tuesday to begin a five-day trial with Premier League giants Manchester City. The young player impressed talent scouts with his performance for the UAE in the 2012 Olympics and was quickly invited back. His trial period may be extended if he impresses City’s coaching staff.
Senior Al Qubaisi retained his glory by scoring a total of 1324 in six games, securing an average of 220.6, forcing Hussain Al Suwaidi into second place with 1218 points. Former UAE coach, American Patrick Henry, came in third with a total of 1177 points.
There has been no official comment from Al Ain Club regarding the situation, but Omar himself seemed excited by the prospect tweeting “today I travel to Manchester for training, wish me luck”. The attacking midfielder will have to impress during training sessions at Etihad Stadium.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Al Qubaisi (junior) defeated his competitors with an average of 189.3. Lebanese bowler, Wayal Al Reef, settled for second place with an average of 186, while Emirati bowlers Suhail Al Tamimi, Khalood Al Mustafa and Ali Al Rashidi took third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Boasting 12 senior caps, the young 20-year-old is noted as one of the UAE’s most promising players and bolstered this reputation with a spectacular performance against Uruguay this summer, where he was a key playmaker in both goals for the Emirates.
After suffering a severe ligament injury last year, Abdulrahman looks to have regained his form and now looks in every way able to compete amongst the big boys of International football. thesourceuae.com

Every year, Muslims take part in Eid al-Fitr, an Islamic holiday to celebrate the end of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. This is a day where people around the world try to show a common goal of unity and spend the day marveling in God’s wonder. With Islam being the World’s second largest religion, it’s no wonder that Eid celebrations differ slightly from country to country. Whether it’s a four day celebration in Tunisia, painting henna in Pakistan or gathering at Green Point in Cape Town, Eid al-Fitr is a wonderful time of year where Muslims, no matter where they are in the world, come together in spirit to celebrate this auspicious occasion.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES In the UAE, festivities start soon after the morning Eid prayers. For most Emirati’s the first day of Eid is exclusively for visiting relatives and family elders. For expatriate Muslims, this often means long distance phone calls! Special food is prepared to serve to visitors and people wear their best clothes. On the second day of Eid, people tend to go out of their homes, listen to Arabic music, watch traditional dancing or simply spend time having dinner with their loved ones.
TUNISIA In Tunisia, children accompany their fathers and visit aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends to congratulate them on the Eid. Special biscuits called Baklava are baked and given to visitors to welcome guests into one another’s homes.

In the predominantly Malay area of Bo-Kaap, in Cape Town, people spill into the streets to celebrate Eid amongst their brightly colored houses and many beautiful mosques, including the first established Muslim Mosque in all of South Africa.

SYRIA Children in Syria get new clothes, as well as gifts and money to celebrate the occasion. The day starts with morning Eid prayers, followed by visits to families and friends.
INDONESIA
In Jakarta, Indonesia, as the rain falls heavily on Eid morning, a young mother loads her daughters onto her scooter to take them to visit their relatives.
SAUDI ARABIA Men in Medina, KSA, perform Eid prayers after which they will return to their families to continue the celebrations. Eid in Saudi Arabia is a big affair, decorations are hung and people invite their friends and families to their homes for huge feasts where traditional Arabian hospitality takes centre stage. After Eid prayers, kids line up in to collect Riyals from older family members as well as gift bags containing toys and candy. In some areas, men go out and buy bags of rice, before leaving them at the doors of those less fortunate than themselves.
PAKISTAN In Islamabad, Pakistan, women and girls get very excited decorating their hands, arms and feet with intricate henna designs in celebration of the Eid. This tradition has existed for centuries and, for many families, Eid would be considered incomplete without henna decoration. thesourceuae.com

MALAYSIA A young Malaysian man returns home to the city of Shah Alam as part of the time honored tradition of ‘balik kampung’. This migration, performed by thousands of people every year at Eid al-Fitr, sees people travel from the big cities to their villages or home towns to visit relatives and request forgiveness from parents, in-laws, elders and God.
MALAYSIA Two little boys in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, point excitedly at the bamboo cannon firecrackers and fireworks set off each year on the morning of Eid. This loud celebration kicks off a day of festivities, where kids are gowned in newly purchased traditional attire, receive money in colorful envelopes and when families gather together to feast and enjoy each other’s company.
INDONESIA Outside a mosque in Jakarta, Indonesia, men, women, police officers and children pray together to celebrate the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Hari Raya or Eid al-Fitr.
TURKEY People in Istanbul, Turkey, gather at the fresh water estuary known as the Golden Horn to begin Eid celebrations. Schools and government buildings close for three days to celebrate ‘bayram’. The first day is considered the most important and everyone in the family will wake up early to begin celebrations and attend prayers at the mosque. Public shows and theater performances keep crowds entertained in the evenings while young children go door-to-door, offering Eid greetings and receiving candy in return, much like the western custom of Halloween.

Seriously, it’s that serious! Sporting 20inch forged alloy wheels, Brembo brakes the size of desert foxes, LED running lights, a nice hood fitted with huge gaps to cool down that monster engine and with a top speed of 260km/h, this is one car that’s set to give its rivals the shivers. Get inside, and that’s where you’ll really feel the difference between the GC and its competitors. Fully loaded and boasting two-tone nappa leather and suede sport seats, a heated leather bound steering wheel and leather wrapped gear knob, instrument panel and door trims, the SRT8 also has scarily responsive steering. The Jeep Selec-Track System (a favorite of ours) is still there with five different driving modes to suit your driving mood or terrain, whether that’s cruising on auto or hitting ‘snow’ mode in the depths of winter. The system works by adjusting several factors like transmission shift points, torque proportioning, throttle control and stability, to give you one of the smoothest rides of your life. So, what are the damages? With a price tag of AED260,000 and with everything the car has to offer, you’ll do well to get a better deal. In my opinion, this car deserves a standing ovation!

s I sat waiting patiently for Nada Salem Al Qassimi, I quietly mulled over what exactly drives a young lady to launch her own communication company, especially during an economic downturn.
As I slowly sipped my coffee, my eyes watched countless Emirati ladies wander past and suddenly, panic set in as I realized I was waiting for a person that I’d never seen! How on earth would I recognize her? Alas, I needn’t have worried as, just then, a selfassured, distinguished Emirati lady strode elegantly towards me looking like she’d known me from way back when. Her friendly demeanor and placid nature put me instantly at ease and I knew, at that moment, this lady had an interesting story to tell. Nada is an extraordinary young woman who seems to have defied the odds. Back in 2008, when most companies were collapsing or struggling to make ends meet, she started

Nada’s strong personality reflects her determination and drive. She didn’t start out seeking a career in media or marketing but instead graduated from Sharjah University in Health Sciences Administration. After graduating, and without any experience, she was delighted to be handed a position as a logistic partner at the Dubai Health Authority, who hosted the first ever World Dental Federation Conference. “Just like that they gave me the job, without any experience” she tells me smiling. Her managers were impressed by her talent and dedication and soon promoted her to Head of Media and Marketing, where she worked for five years in events management and branding. During this time, Nada witnessed a business boom take place across the city of Dubai. She realized that there were not enough media companies out there to deal with the boom that could “succeed in marketing Emirati identity. We struggle a lot of with international companies to understand our way of thinking. There was no local agent that could create the Emirati flavor.” And so, her business idea was born. The Khalifa Fund for Enterprise granted Nada a loan to assist in the startup of her company. However, she faced many obstacles. There was stiff competition from International and Middle Eastern media agencies, some of which had been in the business for over twenty years. Being a newcomer was a real challenge and Nada was grateful for all the assistance she received, “Alhamdulillah, there were lots of local people who believed in me and gave me huge projects.” Her company is truly unique. The Emirati flavor is present in every element of her work. “We are proud of our heritage and I have the understanding of our culture. Internationals and expats don’t understand our culture. We understand it well and know how to present it.” Nada has an unusual approach when it comes to conducting business. When they started, they already knew some government clients with whom they wanted to work, such as Etisalat. In fact, Etisalat was her first big client. Their methodology involves studying gaps in their potential clients marketing, approaching them and presenting them with solutions. Her strategy is not to tell clients about her company, but to talk about their own shortcomings. This makes companies really sit up and listen. Only at the end of the presentation will Nada brief them about her company. Success doesn’t come without hard work and Nada’s days are certainly busy, kicking off at 6am with a meeting with her top managers. By 10am, the creative team arrives in the office and the entire group sits together for a two hour brainstorming session. Her role is multi-faceted; she oversees all presentations, contributes ideas and generally guides the company as a whole. It’s long hours, but it’s not all work and no play. Twice a week, they close the office, take their laptops and head outside. “We have lunch, sit and chit-chat and just keep things open and fresh.” She believes this time away from the office helps renergize employees and build a spirit of camaraderie. The company’s achievements have not gone unrecognized. Last year, 300 companies competed for the HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Award for the Best Project of the Year and it was two12Communications who took the coveted title. Her success and business achievement truly is a source of inspiration and, after our chat; I found my own personal business interests had been somewhat rekindled. Nada Salem Al Qassimi is a woman with passion, knowledge, wisdom and experience. She kindly passed on some of her words of wisdom to us...

During the last few days of Ramadan, before Eid arrives, it’s obligatory for every Muslim family to give a determined amount of money, known as ‘sadaqah al- fitr (charity of fast breaking), as a donation to those less fortunate. The air is festive, the malls are buzzing, and the shop windows plastered with tempting promotions luring people into a shopping frenzy. We’re almost at the end of Ramadan and Muslims are looking forward to a joyous three-day celebration called Eid al- Fitr, often known as the ‘Smaller Eid’. Eid marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of a new month. Since the day depends on the sighting of the crescent moon, the exact date varies from country to country. In Arabic, Eid means “festivity” and Fitr “breaking the fast.” This is the day where Muslims around the world try to show a common goal of unity and acknowledgment of God. “Eid means gathering together. I have to think of all my children and prepare a big meal. I prepare Arabic sweets two days before and this, in itself, is a celebration. It’s a wonderful day because the family celebrates all together. I also prepare Eidiya for the little children and gifts for the elder children.” Ilham Saad, Jordan

When Eid is called, Muslims gather early in the morning in outdoor locations or at the mosque to perform the Eid prayer. The Eid prayer is a short congregational prayer followed by a sermon. After the Eid prayer, it’s customary to greet the person sitting on either side of oneself with the common Eid greeting, ‘Eid Mubarak’ (Blessed Eid) or ‘Eid Sa’eed’ (Happy Eid). People will then go out to visit their family and friends.

3 Steps to Silky, Straight, Summer Hair

Your hair doesn’t need to be scraped back in a ponytail all summer long! It’s possible to achieve silky, straight hair amidst this summer heat by following these simple steps:

Apply hair serum into your towel dried hair. Moroccan oil is great as it moisturizes hair while reducing frizz, infuses your locks with healthy vitamins and gives it some protection from the sun’s harsh UV rays.
TIP: Don’t apply too much as this will not only weigh your hair down, it will also make it look oily!

Blow dry your hair into three sections: top, middle and bottom. Starting from the bottom, work your way up, all the while ensuring that the blow drier’s nozzle is pointing downwards and that you are blow-drying from roots to ends. This controls the direction of the air flow and helps reduce frizz. When it comes to brushes, a paddle brush is your best bet but a medium, round metal
or wooden brush will also give you smooth, shiny hair. Once the blow dry is complete, spritz a control and finishing mist over your hair to hold the style in place. Alternatively, rub a pea sized amount of shine serum through your locks but avoid getting it near your roots as this will just make your hair look greasy.

If you want even straighter, silkier results, run some flat irons or hair straighteners over your blow-dried hair. Remember to use a heat protection spray beforehand to shield your locks from any permanent damage!

Chicken patties
Ingredients 500g raw chicken breasts 1tsp crushed garlic 1tsp freshly ground, green chillies ½ tsp cumin powder ½ tsp coriander powder 3 medium-sized potatoes, boiled and mashed 1stalk of fresh coriander leaves ½ cup of spring onions, chopped 1 beaten egg Bread crumbs, for dipping Salt to taste Oil to fry Method • Combine the chicken, garlic, cumin powder, coriander powder, coriander leaves and spring onions in a food processor and grind into a thick mixture. • Mix the mashed potatoes, green chillies and salt. • Add in the chicken mixture. Keep aside for 1015 minutes. • Heat oil in a pan. • Shape the mixture into small flat patties (shape as desired). • Dip the patties in the beaten egg and roll in bread crumbs. • Shallow fry until golden. • Serve hot with tomato or mint sauce. 1 cup tomato puree 2 tbsp olive oil

Drop the sliced garlic cloves and chopped onion into the sauce. Stir in1tbsp of olive oil and season the sauce generously with salt and pepper.

On top of the tomato sauce, arrange the slices of the vegetables concentrically from the outer edge to the inside of the baking dish, overlapping and alternating the vegetables.

Drizzle the remaining tablespoon of olive oil over the vegetables and add salt and pepper.
•
Sprinkle fresh thyme over the dish.

Pour the tomato puree into the bottom of an oval baking dish.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Cover the dish with a piece of parchment paper cut to fit the inside of the dish.

Bake for approximately 45-55 minutes or until the vegetables have released their liquid and are clearly cooked, with the tomato sauce bubbling around the edges.

Serve with a dab of goat cheese on top or with some crusty French bread.

Boil wheat, barley and whole gram lentil until tender, then liquidize and keep aside.

In a deep pot, fry the onions until golden brown.

Add ginger-garlic paste, cumin powder, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, peppercorns and cloves and stir for 1 minute.
•
Now add chicken, green chillies, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt. Braise until the chicken is coated with all the spices.
•
Add enough water to the fill the pot and cook the chicken until quite tender.
•
Add the liquidized cereal and cook for 3-4 hours until well blended, to a broth consistency.
•
Prepare the temper by adding the whole cumin in a pan and heat until the aroma rises.
•
Add the ghee and sliced onions, fry until golden.

When haleem is ready, add the temper to it.
Garnish:
•
Garnish with spring onions, coriander leaves and garam masala powder.
•
Serve with lemon wedges on the side.

Boil milk, agar-agar powder, sugar and cardamom together. Simmer until milk has slightly evaporated.

Remove from heat and tint lightly with a few drops of food coloring.
•
Cool slightly before adding the cream and whip until frothy.
•
Pour into individual bowls or in one large serving bowl.
•
Sprinkle slivered almonds on top.
•

’d always have said I was pretty well-versed in the history of the UAE and the city of Al Ain. That was until my recent trip to the Al Ain National Museum.
The oldest museum in the UAE, located next to the Eastern Fort on the outskirts of the Al Ain Oasis, the museum is divided into three main sections designated to ethnographical, archaeological and gift displays. The Ethnographical section focuses on life, culture and pastimes in the pre-oil boom. If you’re interested in old black and white photographs, the museum exhibits a fascinating collection from the 1960s. Other artifacts include jewelry and coin collections. There are also comprehensive exhibitions on falconry, weaponry alongside displays of the pearl and fishing trades. The Archaeological section exhibits locally excavated objects from the Stone Age, the Iron Age and the Islamic period up until about 700AD. There are interesting displays of pottery, stone vessels and copper objects that were discovered in mass graves at Hili and Umm an Nar. Ancient settlements and graves from the Iron Age show distinct evidence of sophisticated industries producing fine bracelets and anklets made of bronze. Golden palm trees, jewel encrusted daggers and ornamental camels are just some of the elaborate gifts given to the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God rest his soul) and on display for all to see. The exhibitions are regularly maintained and updated and the display information is in both Arabic and English. MY WORLD We share a passion for travel, my husband and I, especially taking to the open road and getting out exploring parts of South Africa unknown to us. Recently though, my husband has been beaming like a little boy hiding the world’s best kept secret. He has been exceedingly enthusiastic about our next trip, his face lighting up each time he shares a new fact about his latest passion. When he finally revealed his plan to me, alarm bells started ringing! This was no ordinary trip travelling along our wide national roads, with civilised pit stops at comfy roadside retreats and farm stalls stocked high with local honey and preserves. No, he wanted us to explore the desolate, rugged, uninhabited, dusty northern regions of South Africa. He wanted to test the 4x4 capabilities of our trusted stead through the Richtersveld and southern Namibia! I tried in vane to persuade him that it wasn’t a good idea, that it was too long a journey for the kids, that we were not experienced enough as 4x4 drivers, that we couldn’t do it on our own, but he was adamant that this was the ultimate exploration and that we could do it, easily! The only small victory I won was his agreement to leave the kids in the safe hands of their grandparents. I realised very quickly that my pleas were going unheard and that, if I was going to stick by my man through thick and thin, ghost towns and gravel roads, I would have to brush up on what awaited in this remote world.
Reassuringly, I discovered we could join an organised group convoy instead of going it alone. My research showed that departing from Cape Town, we would travel 640km north on good tar road to a town called Eksteenfontein, where we’d come across dirt roads that apparently could even be travelled with a normal sedan car. So far so good. From Johannesburg, our point of departure, we could fly or drive to Upington and then drive further to Eksteenfontein where the real adventure would begin. I was encouraged to read that 4x4 vehicles or 4x2‘s with ‘diff’ lock and high ground clearance would be ideal. Okay, we qualify there. Phew. I also discovered that fuel does not flow freely throughout the journey and that we could only fill up at Vioolsdrif, Sendelingsdrift, Port Nolloth, Rosh Pinah, Aus, Lüderitz or Aussenkehr. That settled it; I’ll have to be watching the fuel gauge like a hawk! Accommodation options are also limited, so I immediately get looking at what’s available and get ready to book ahead. At this point I was still filled with a measure of trepidation but I could appreciate the challenges of roughing it in some respects. It was certainly going to be an adventure! Revelation came to me when I started looking into what we would be peering out at from the comfort of our air conditioned vehicle. Wow! I was bowled over! At Klein-Aus Vista on the edge of the Namib Desert you feel that you’re on a road to

nowhere, but the views stretch endlessly to the horizon and may even be dotted with game. At the Geelkrans lookout point a few kilometres from Fiddler’s Creek Camp, you overlook the Vioolsdrif’s green fields and the Namib plains as you’re just 16 kms downstream from the border post. The view looked breathtaking! I could feel my excitement rising. I started making furious mental notes of lookout points in the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. I thought of the wild horses mingling with gemsbok at the waterhole at Garub, Pomona and the gigantic arch at Bogenfels south of Lüderitz, all the while frantically searching through my cupboards for my digital camera! A laugh erupted from within as I realised that just looking at pictures of this wilderness had my heart racing and roaring to go on this promising adventure. My husband was thrilled his right hand man had come around, assuring me that nothing could prepare me for seeing the place with my own eyes. Packing our passports, we’re almost ready to set off on a back-road tour through the wide open wilderness of the Richtersveld and southern Namibia!
