NARROW WIN OVER AL SHABAB Al Ain struggled hard against Al Shabab last week to secure a fiercely contested 3-2 win which saw them move temporarily to the top of the Etisalat Pro-League. Al Shabab’s defense played tremendously making it hard for Al Ain to get a shot on target. The opening goal came after a referee error which handed Gyan a penalty for a very questionable reaction to a tackle.
Al Ain’s Brosque struggled to get past Al Shabab’s defense
Just after halftime, Ciel equalized for Al Shabab before Gyan grabbed his second goal of the match. Another error by the referee disallowed a foul in the Al Shabab box, allowing Al Ain to fire home a third goal. Ciel struck again in injury time but it was the visitors who were to scoop the 3 points.

ovember 14, is celebrated worldwide as World Diabetes Day, an annual ‘blue circle’ campaign created in 1991 to raise awareness and educate the public about diabetes.
The date commemorates the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, discovered insulin in 1922 resulting in life-saving treatment for diabetic patients. WHO estimates that more than 346 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes and the number is likely to more than double by 2030. When it comes to the UAE, statistics revealed by the Arab Health Congress last year indicate that almost 19.5% of our country’s population is diabetic, ranking us second highest worldwide in diabetes prevalence. In order to know more about diabetes and preventive measures we headed to NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Ain to talk to Dr. Jim Philip, Specialist Endocrinologist in Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases. The Source: What exactly is diabetes and what are the different types? Dr. Philip: Diabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels rise above the normal range. There are two basic types of diabetes: Diabetes Mellitus type-1, which is a form of diabetes mellitus that results from auto-immune destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. The subsequent lack of insulin leads to increased blood and urine glucose. Diabetes Mellitus type-2 is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose due to relative insulin deficiency and resistance for the action of insulin. The Source: What, if any, are the symptoms of diabetes? Dr. Philip: The symptoms might vary among individuals, but, the most common and classical symptoms in both cases are excess thirst and constant hunger besides a frequent need to urinate, infections, weight loss and fatigue. But, in many cases, patients show no symptoms at all. The Source: Is diabetes a medical condition or a disease? Dr. Philip: As there is no cure yet, it’s more likely to be called a disease rather than a medical condition. 12
The Source
The Source: Why is diabetes prevalence so high in the UAE? Dr. Philip: It’s due to unhealthy lifestyles and improper food choices. Moreover, it’s also due to great dependence on machines and less physical activity in our daily lives. The Source: So, does exercise help in the treatment? Dr. Philip: Greatly! Good eating habits, when combined with walking or light exercise, play a vital role in either preventing diabetes or, in other cases, controlling the disease. By adopting a healthy lifestyle, doing 150 minutes of exercise per week and achieving an ideal body weight, people can prevent and delay diabetes. The Source: What constitutes healthy food? Dr. Philip: Healthy food constitutes unrefined carbohydrates like the food made of whole wheat and oats. People should also eat more fresh fruit, vegetables, low fat dairy products and pulses. The Source: Is diabetes fatal? Dr. Philip: Uncontrolled diabetes, over a long period of time, can lead to severe medical complications including diabetic retinopathy-visual compromise, diabetic nephropathy- renal failure, diabetic neuropathy and amputations and cardiovascular disease. Lastly, how is NMC celebrating World Diabetes Day? Dr. Philip: NMC Specialty Hospital will be joining hands with the Community services Eastern sector of the Al Ain Municipality by conducting free medical checkups for visitors at Bawadi Mall from the 14-16 November to create awareness in the community.

Fuelling Dreams of Football By Rawad Naser
W
ith the London Olympics well and truly over, thoughts are turning to the year 2016 when the summer games will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro in the colorful country of Brazil. The United Arab Emirates is one country that hopes to use 2016 as a chance to build on their biggest ever succession of athletes as seen in this year’s games and in preparation, the sporting talents of youngsters up and down the country are being cultivated. Mubarak Al Ketbi is one such Emirati involved in this field. Earlier in 2012, Mubarak established United Academy for Athletic Services, the first company in Al Ain to combine sports training and social interaction in the community in a bid to attract and develop more youngsters to the sporting world. Born and brought up in Al Ain, Mubarak graduated from Al Ghurair University in 2011 and began working as a government employee. As a youngster, his passion was football and he was honored to play with Al Ain Football Club. Smiling, he explains why he decided to open a sports training academy, “my love and passion for football motivated me to exert more hard work in serving and directing the young talents of Al Ain, and that’s when the idea of establishing the United Academy popped into my mind.” People in the Al Ain community would ask him where their kids could go to improve their sports skills and cultivating their talents and so opening a Sports Academy seemed like a logical conclusion. His efforts were aimed at moving children away from “modern electronic games that occupy the lion’s share of our kid’s time” and instead having them focus on sports, which are a lot of fun and much healthier for youngsters. At present, the academy focuses on football and swimming, with a special swimming area under construction as we speak. As

exploring talents, developing them and sending those who show promise in the direction of Al Ain Football Club.” Any youngsters who show talent and desire for sport are encouraged to enroll in the sports academy. For Al Ketbi, “sport is everything in my life”. Not only is it his business but it’s also his hobby, he spends the majority of his free time exercising and, when he’s not doing this, he can usually be found watching sport especially when his two favorite teams, Al Ain FC or Spanish giants Real Madrid are playing. Mubarak continues, “in recent years, Emirati sports have seen significant development thanks to the support of the country’s Sheikhs (may God protect them).” Not only have many sports facilities and councils been set up, but there is now also a comprehensive support system dedicated to helping youngsters develop their talents and abilities. When it comes to football, the UAE Football Association (UAEFA) are doing an excellent job of helping both national and club teams improve and develop. Mubarak is proud to be a part of this progress, telling us he simply “aims to serve the community and country.” In order for even more improvement he suggests “increasing the number of participating teams in the UAEFA tournament as well as the number of matches from one to two per week and diminishing the break in the middle of the tournament which can have a negative impact on the skill level of young players. When it comes to the national team, he is happy to see foreign players being introduced believing that this will “have a positive result and improve the national team’s overall performance.” As we bring our chat to an end, Mubarak calls on local young men to get involved in sport. He urges them, “let’s work for our beloved homeland, get used to the level of international sports and execute this all over the UAE.”
demand increases, the company looks set to grow with plans to include a variety of sports in the near future. The success of the business hasn’t been a picnic and Mubarak has had to overcome many obstacles. He explains that, “by the grace of Allah, this sports business was opened alongside the support of family and friends.” Now up and running, the academy offers scientific programs and appropriate work strategies for different levels of sporting abilities as well as great opportunities for talented youngsters to improve their skills. They organize weekly and monthly sports camps and assemblies during both summer and winter. The ethos behind the business is very much family orientated with “the company having both family and society educational objectives. We work hard to help create a new aspiring sports generation at a high level and we aim to build a good and healthy family. The company works on

Ace That ParentTeacher Meeting
I
By Khudayja Saloojee
n an ideal world, parent–teacher conferences are something that we should look forward to because as proud parents we bask in the glow of the teacher’s report on our flawless children. The reality, for many of us, is somewhat different. I don’t cherish my own school memories and whenever parentteacher conferences are scheduled, the daunting prospect of being back in the classroom fills me with dread. That being said, despite my anguish, I have discovered that parentteacher conferences are a good way to meet my children’s teachers and learn not only about their academic performances and their teacher’s expectations for them but also gain an insight into how well they are developing socially. Research indicates that students learn more and have higher grades when parents are actively involved in their children’s education. Attending parent-teacher conferences is a great way for parents to get involved and stay involved throughout the school year. Initially, I was a naïve, clueless parent, listening passively to the teacher’s comments. I always assumed the teacher was the expert, but over the years I’ve wised up and realized that teacher-parent conferences are a two-way dialogue that can be beneficial for both parents and teacher. Here are some things you can do to prepare ahead of time to get the most out of your meeting. Send back your conference form early Usually, teachers will send home a parent conference form noting the times, they are available to meet. If you’re one of the first parents to send the form back, you’re more likely to get your preferred time slot. Get your child’s input My daughters always feel a little anxious when they know that we’ll

be talking to their teachers. It’s important you give your child the opportunity to tell you their likes or dislikes, or let you know if they’d like you to ask certain questions or talk about specific things. After the conference, be sure to brief them so they know what happened. Write down your questions If you have any specific queries or questions, jot them down as there’s nothing more frustrating than walking out the door and remembering something important you wanted to ask. Remember, the teacher may be on a tight schedule, so use time wisely to discuss important key concerns. Take a notepad and pen Write down any information the teacher gives you as often it’s hard to remember everything that has been discussed. I also take down notes about my children’s weaknesses and the strategies used to address the problems. Stay open-minded and don’t get defensive The teacher is likely to start with positive comments about your child. As a parent you want to hear wonderful things about your child, but bear in mind that you may also be told about areas where your child has room to improve. You’ll get better results asking why the teacher thinks your child is having trouble in a particular subject instead of telling them you think they’re not teaching properly. Tell the teacher of any changes at home If there has been a major upheaval such as the death of a close family member, divorce, a new baby or a house move etc. this can affect the way your child behaves at school, so be sure to let the teacher know. Key questions to ask the teacher: • What skills does my child have to master this year, especially in subjects such as Reading, Maths, English and Science? • What kind of information is used to evaluate students and how are grades determined? • What can I do at home to support the teacher’s efforts and complement what is happening in the classroom? • How do you accommodate differences in learning? • Does my child get with other children socially?

news Canteen Staff Get Clued Up
Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) in partnership with Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) have recently trained 150 private school representatives from across the emirate regarding food safety and healthy eating, including the types of food that should be made available at schools to student’s of different age groups. School canteen guide lines for the Abu Dhabi emirate were developed in collaboration with ADEC, HAAD and Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) to ensure a safe food environment and encourage healthy eating. Dr. Arwa Al Midwahi, Senior Officer in the Community Health Division at HAAD, explained “Studies have shown that prevention of unhealthy food at schools plays a significant role in reducing diseases across a society. Earlier we had bad food habits due to the unhealthy items that were available at school canteens. Currently, the Abu Dhabi canteen guideline prevents unhealthy food and provides alternatives that contain fruits and vegetable which children and teenagers enjoy eating.”

Hilal Al Marzouqi, Head of the School Canteens committee at ADEC, added that monitoring food quality, nutritional value and prices is in line with ADEC’s goals and objectives to ensure optimum services are provided for students.
Leadership Workshop For Principals Principals and vice principals from 30 selected private schools are currently attending a five week training course organized by Abu Dhabi Education Council’s (ADEC) School Improvement Division to help develop knowledge and skills regarding strategic planning and implementation. The training, entitled ‘Strategic Leadership Training for School Principals’, aims to create a self sustainable and supportive development environment, while enhancing the knowledge of principals and vice principals on the practical processes of strategic leadership. Engineer Hamad Al Dhaheri, ADEC’s Private School and Quality Assurance Executive Director explained, “The course helps principals move away from just being a school principal to being an individual who is in touch with all aspects regarding the school, including matters concerning stakeholders, the school owner, teachers and parents. They must be able to decide what the priorities are to help move their schools forward.” ADEC has also introduced an online portal service for private schools. Staff members have been given a username and password to access the portal for learning resources and they can also access national curriculums as well as ADEC’s in-house workshop materials.

DIY: The Five Step Facial By Etdal Abougouche
D
on’t want to shell out big bucks for a facial at a spa? Here are 5 easy steps to the perfect at-home facial!
1) CLEAN! Start by cleansing your face and neck using mild face wash and follow up with a toner to remove any excess oil or impurities, personally we like the L’Oreal Hydrafresh toner AED 22. 2) EXFOLIATE! Exfoliating keeps your skin looking smooth and radiant and helps remove dead skin cells and unclog your pores, which is why this is an important step. Apply a facial scrub on damp skin and gently massage onto your face and neck using your fingertips in a circular motion for about 1 minute. Wash off with a warm cloth and pat your face gently dry. 3) MASK! Choose a face mask that best suits your skin type, whether you have normal, oily, dry or combination skin, as using the right mask will help you achieve a glowing complexion. Apply

the face mask as per the package directions; slice a cucumber and apply one round to each eye, then find a spot to lay back and relax; this is the perfect excuse to put your feet up! 4) LIP SCRUB! Using a lip scrub eliminates dry, flaky skin leaving your lips soft and subtle. Scrub your lips using a damp toothbrush for 15 seconds or be creative by making a homemade lip scrub. In a plastic bowl, mix 2 tbsps of brown sugar with ½ tsp of olive oil and rub the mixture on your lips for 15 seconds. Rinse off with warm water! Follow up by applying a lip balm or Vaseline to your lips to keep them super soft. 5) MOISTURIZE! This final step will seal the deal. Apply moisturizer to your face and neck and dab an eye cream around your eyes and voila, your skin will feel fresh, clean and beautiful. Aim to do this facial treatment twice a week to achieve a clear complexion and a glowing skin!

Turning Pink at Al Ain Mall
T
he 2nd Breast Cancer Awareness Go Pink Campaign took place at Al Ain Mall on 9 November, 2012.
The event saw a whole day of activities unfold in a bid to raise both awareness and funds for the cause. Things kicked off bright and early with a 2.5km Go Pink Walkathon starting at 8am. A huge turnout was visible with many groups, individuals, organizations, schools and companies coming forward to support the noble cause.
Beauty Centre. The participants showed tremendous courage in their approach to life after having been diagnosed with something which so drastically changed their lives and the show touched the hearts of many. Jane Adams, one of the participants and a cancer survivor, chatted to us and advised people to “go for mammograms regularly and don’t ever consider the ailment as a death sentence and the end of the world. Look at us, we are all living happily.” Amy Bassim, a Malaysian national who has survived breast cancer for 10 years, spoke to the audience advising people and women in particular, to take charge of their bodies as “if you detect it [breast cancer] early, you can survive.”
There was a carnival atmosphere as the walk got underway led by the deafening sounds of Dubai Drums. After the walk, participants enjoyed kid’s workshops, live entertainment, auctions and raffle prize draws. The Go Pink Walkathon is a collaborative initiative with Abu Dhabi Authority, Angels of Mercy Cancer Society and Al Ain Mall, and has been a resounding success since it began back in 2011. Mohammed Salem Al Ketbi, a participant whose mother and two aunts were diagnosed with breast cancer last year, was enthusiastically explaining, “I’m here to support the mothers, sisters and all the women in the society. Such campaigns help people to give their input and show the patients how much we care about them.” Sana Merchant happily said “this is my first time to be associated with something like this. I love Al Ain Mall for conducting such activities that help people become aware of such important things through a nice friendly environment.”
Foong Kwai, originally from China, was an active backstage participant, helping get the women organized and onto the runway. A breast cancer survivor herself, she values such events as a place for women to come together, have fun, bond with others who’ve been through similar experiences and realize that life continues.
Post-walkathon activities, such as the Go Pink Bake Sale, were a nice reward for walkers’ hard efforts with leading bakeries and coffee shops offering delicious sweet treats in exchange for a small donation to the campaigns funds. The day culminated in the fabulous ‘Go Pink Survivors Fashion Show’ which saw breast cancer survivors parade down the ramp in some of the hottest styles from Al Ain Mall’s leading fashion and beauty outlets including Al Horaibi, Spring, Faces And VLCC 24

After the fashion show, the popular redheaded Ronald Macdonald entertained kids with an amusing show and the Step N Groove dance team stunned the crowds with their unique dance moves and incredible energy.
The fabulous Go Pink Survivor Fashion Show
Star Academy celeb Laila Iskandar graced the event with her attendance in support of breast cancer awareness and mesmerized the audience with her stunning vocals. The event was a resounding success and Al Ain Mall certainly did a great job in providing a platform for creating awareness about breast cancer. Well done to every one who took part.

Al Ain’s Private Paradise By Farid Nouisser
t was while on the hunt for a venue for my youngest son’s birthday party that I discovered the Al Bada Resort. Having lived in Al Ain for over a year, I was pretty sure I’d scoped out all of the possible venues in town and was stunned to learn of this striking resort, situated deep in the rolling red dunes of Al Ain, but only a few minutes from the Garden City. This tiny piece of paradise is entirely luxurious with 60 individual chalets catering to the highest level of privacy and relaxation imaginable. At the other end of the spectrum, the resort offers an array of activities certain to appeal to anyone with an adventurous spirit. If you have kids, there is an area that will have them jumping for joy and keep them entertained for hours. If an invigorating workout is what you’re after then search no more as the fitness facilities are lacking in nothing. Why not take a quad bike out for a spin, hop on a dune buggy or soak in a peaceful sunset on horseback? There is an internet gaming zone, billiards, falconry and, of course, a stunning complex pool. For those seeking deluxe luxury, a few of the chalets also offer private swimming pools.

Houses in Toraja Village
here is a well kept secret on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia which, in the 1860s, scientist Alfred Russel Wallace had the fortune to stumble across. Banti Murung is a small mountain in the Maros District. A gushing waterfall serves as the stunning backdrop to a magical encounter with a flood of friendly butterflies; all colors of the rainbow, all shapes and sizes. Wallace was so enchanted by this place that he set up a laboratory, which today serves as a museum.

Every year, people come to see the unique architecture where roofs are shaped like ancient Austronesia ships and the wood is cut so perfectly that no nails, ropes or glues are needed to hold it all together. The decorations on the houses have deep symbolic meaning and serve both to bring honor to the household by signifying wealth in the number of buffalo horns on display and to attract blessing and good fortune from the colors, characters and numbers displayed.

HOROSCOPE
Happy Birthday SCORPIO! Scorpio is the eighth zodiac sign and those born under this sign are often super serious in their mission to learn about others. The curiosity of a Scorpio is immeasurable, which may be why they make such adept investigators. Fearless Scorpios rarely lose; they keep on going using their stubbornness and determination to power through and succeed. Scorpios work as hard as they can so that, someday, they will be able to sit back and feel satisfied with what they have achieved. When it comes to love, those born under the Scorpio are intense, passionate and filled with desire. However, they do soften when it comes to their partner and show great devotion and care. They can also be very complex individuals and have a penchant for secrecy. Scorpions are ruled by the planets Mars and Pluto. This planetary combination makes for people who are motivated, penetrating and aware. They are intuitive, probing and focused, keen to know who is who and what is what. Scorpios can have short fuses and sharp tempers, especially if someone gets in their way, so it’s best to give them plenty of room. They love competition in both work and play, which is why they do well in sports.
‘Sinister’ is a thrilling horror starring Ethan Hawke as true-crime novelist Ellison Oswalt. Ellison moves his family into the same house as a murdered family and uses the murders as the basis for his new novel. He discovers a mysterious box of home movies and watches the films, all depicting families murdered in various ways. After watching these movies, his family is plunged into a nightmarish experience filled with supernatural horrors.

review This thrilling fictional story tells the tale of a federal judge’s murder and an imprisoned lawyer who has important inside information. Given the nature of what judges do, it’s remarkable that in the history of the county where the story is set, only four have been murdered. This book tells the tale of Judge Raymond Fawcett, who has just become number five. 28
