T
his time of year is certainly a busy one.
It only feels like yesterday that we were celebrating Diwali and Hijiri and now we’ve spent the past few weeks gearing up for some fantastic National Day festivities. Now, it’s full steam ahead to Christmas and all the partying that goes along with that! It’s one of the things I love about the UAE, no matter where you are from or what nationality you are, everyone is able to take part in and enjoy the occasions and festivities that mean the most to them. To get ourselves in the festive mood, we took a look at some of Europe’s best Christmas Markets, perfect if you’re planning a bit of a winter break. Present buying can definitely eat into your December budget so take a look at page 24 where we show you how to make some super stylish but highly economical gift bags. And why not get your party off to a great start by trying out some of our scrumptious winter recipes? Christmas aside, we’ve got lots more going on as we chat to Emirati horsemaster Ali Al Ameri before he headed of to compete in Australia. Last week’s Sheikha Shamsa Awards took place right here in Al Ain and we’ve got a detailed look at some of the honored winners. It’s really great to see local women getting involved in promoting and propelling their country, and, on behalf of The Source, I’d like to say a huge congratulations to all the winners.

GOT TALENT
The House of Arts (HOA) hosted their annual Winter Concert last Friday at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) Multaqa Social Club.
The concert showcased talented students of all age groups in piano, violin, drama, drums, dance and other creative activities. Ms Gabriele Malzahn, Director of HOA, commented “We feel that performing for the students is part of their musical education and it showcases the work of students and teachers.” The highlight of the concert was the
dance category. Ballerinas, jazz and tap dancers enthralled the audience with their bedazzling performances. A proud mother, Sandra Pulings, mentioned “Music and dance unites the world.” Ms. Leila Ahu Urfali, Artistic Director of Expressions of Dance and Drama, stated “I
think what Ms. Gabriele is giving at HOA is educational training and it makes students more aware of ballet and dance [as] an art form.” The concert ended on a high with proud parents sharing in their children’s achievements.
NEW FERTILITY CENTER AT
TAWAM
Last week Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine, hosted the official inauguration of the new Tawam Fertility Center in the presence of HE Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), Dr. Fathya Sharif, Obstetrics and Gynecologist Consultant and Head of Tawam IVF Infertility Center, and other distinguished officials. Mr. Gregory F Schaffer, Chief Executive Officer at Tawam Hospital, was very excited at the inauguration of the new center which is a great boost to the Fertility and IVF Unit at the hospital that has been in operational since 1990. He concluded, “This new fertility center is the result of team effort and hard work. It will prove to be beneficial for the community and is there to stay for a long time.”

EVERYONE! Al Najah Private Rehabilitation Center, in association with Al Ain Zoo, hosted an evening of fun for special needs kids from Al Ain. With National Day flags, dancing, music and even an obstacle course, the kids put on a fantastic show for everyone who attended and had a whole lot of fun doing so! 10

THE HADIQA OASIS Al Ain English Speaking School (AAESS) proudly showcased the UAE’s first ever permaculture school garden, ‘Hadiqa Oasis’, to the community last Saturday. The idea came from former teacher Dave Mikhail and permaculturist Vik Avaneas with the aim to involve students every step of the way in order to help them better understand nature and science. Ms. Asa Smith, Librarian at AAESS, explained “Permaculture is permanent agriculture and it’s not just about producing a crop but [also] at the same time taking into account the seasons and soil.” The garden boasts a variety of herbs, fruits and vegetables and students are expected to harvest the crops before selling them to parents, staff and the community to raise money for the upkeep of the garden.

A big congratulations is in order for Al Ain Football Club who recently celebrated the 41st National Day by scoring their 41st goal in this year’s ProLeague tournament. Asamoah Gyan, the leading scorer in the tournament, shot the ball deep into the net on the 14th minute of the Ainawi’s game against Al Shaab.

The Dubai Barracudas came out on top against Al Ain Desert Foxes in Saturday’s game in the Emirates American Football League (EAFL). Despite a promising start from the home team, which saw them dominate the first quarter, it was the visitors who were to take the points with a final score of 32-20. Despite the loss, Al Ain’s Coach Lee Valdez was proud of the team’s performance, “ We’re built on family. We play hard and strong! The game came down to little things. ABU DHABI DERBY Al Ain clinched victory this week with a 2-1 win over Al Wahda in the Abu Dhabi derby of the Etisalat Cup. Al Wahda went into the match with confidence high but both teams were missing key players thanks to injury and national duty. Al Ain was without Omar Abdulrahman, Mohammed Ahmed, Mohanod Al Enazi and goalkeeper Dawoud Sulaiman. Alex Brosque got the first goal of the game after only 5 minutes but Al Wahda fought back hard. The second half saw the visitors equalize with a terrific shot from Saeed. However, victory was to fall to Al Ain after Gyan fired past the last goal of the match in the 80th minute. The Source

n the evening of the 41st National Day, the 2nd annual Sheikha Shamsa bint Suhail Awards took place in the Garden City to commemorate the efforts and creativity of innovative women from various sectors in UAE society. The colorful event was hosted at Zayed Humanitarian Care in Al Ain and attendees were enthralled by entertainment from students of Saqr Emirates Private School, Emirates Private School and Ibn Khaldoon School who provided some spectacular song, dance and poetic performances. Hiam Mohammed Amir, Deputy Secretary General of the Sheikha Shamsa bint Suhail Awards, delivered a speech on behalf of Dr. Moza Ghobash, Secretary General of the Award, wherein she congratulated the President His Highness Sheikha Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, as well as other Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates. On the occasion of the 41st National Day of the UAE. She also praised the remarkable efforts of the president’s wife, Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Suhail, on providing the women of the UAE with a platform to empower them and allow them to compete with their counterparts around the globe in every possible field. The honored winners of the 2012 awards are:
Al Ain’s very own Aisha Khalfan Al Shamsi, was also honored with an award for her creation of the Sheikha bint Suroor Club, where young, promising writers not only have a platform from which to publish their work, but also receive training and coaching with their writing. Also honored in this category was Aisha Nasser Lootah from Dubai for her work in facilitating electronic businesses throughout the country and Maryam Ahmed Ali Al Ziodui, also from Dubai, for her creation of ‘Onk’ an idea that capitalizes on constructive competition between schools in the region. ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS Amna Yousuf Saeed Al Zaabi from Umm Al-Quwain was honored for her work in coordinating a project concerned with the production of corporate gifts and her aim to enhance customer service in the business world. Other awards in this category went to Adiyah Buti Khalifa Al Muheribi from Abu Dhabi for her inventions of which she has so far produced 18 that have been successfully registered with the World Organization of Intellectual Property. Dubai’s Halim Abdullah Rashid Al Sayegh was honored for her contribution in the field of jewelry and artifacts, which helps in promoting the heritage and culture of the UAE.
EDUCATION Asma Ibrahim Ahmed Al Hammadi from Khor Fakkan, Sharjah, was awarded for her immense contribution in the field of Arabic Language. She has worked tirelessly to improve the teaching of the native language, coordinating various activities and programs to help develop Arabic skills. 12

This woman has played an important role in improving and developing the relationship between various groups throughout the community. She also works tirelessly to place special emphasis on helping to integrate those with special needs into mainstream society. Sheikha Azza Abdulla Rashid Al Nuaimi of Ajman was also awarded for her contribution to education where she works tirelessly to meet the financial needs of educational institutes throughout the emirate. Also nominated in the Public Service category was Dr. Laila Mohammed Al Marzouqi of Dubai for her dedication to improving medical services in the emirate and engineer Houria Abdulrahman Al Hajri from Sharjah who established a training center and volunteer group for people from many walks of life. LITERATURE, ARTS AND MEDIA In this category, Fatima Mohammed Abdulrahman from Sharjah was recognized for the role she has played in bringing forth the intrinsic points of view of many Emirati nationals
Nawal Saeed Saleh Al Amri from Abu Dhabi received the award for her artistic use of canvas and paint to portray the heritage and culture of the country. Finally, Abu Dhabi’s Fatma Sultan Saeed Al Mazroui was awarded for her input in literature thanks to the support she lends to talented writers. SPECIAL NEEDS Latifa Taif Rashid of Fujairah was honored for her successful photography skills which have helped capture the spirit of the nation and its dedication to those with special needs. Dubai’s Latifa Ali Sultan Al Suwaidi was also honored for her role in improving sports for those with special needs. She has worked hard to ensure that many disabled athletes are given the chance to represent their country at local, regional and international levels. Salama Ali Saeed Al Kaabi from Fujairah was awarded for her contribution in developing various methods for teaching visually impaired students in order to allow them to integrate successfully and wholly with mainstream students. I’m pushing the boat out. It’s only AED900 a night, a bargain, it should be AED2000!” And with that, Primo was forced over the counter into the receptionist’s eager hand.
MARBARS & the story of the terrified credit cards

hroughout the UAE’s expat community there is a common enigma: men who are married and have families living elsewhere but who come over here and begin living a bachelor lifestyle. Married and Bachelors, something of an oxymoron indeed, from here on in let’s refer to them as ‘Marbars’. I too am a Marbar. When I first arrived in Al Ain, I set myself up in a nice little bachelor pad in the center of town. Bank accounts were opened and cash flow was nice and smooth. My trusty wallet contained four cards…a premier account card who we’ll call ‘Primo’, a premier account chip and pin card, let’s name him ‘Chip’, a backup Lulu credit card, to be known as ‘Louie’ and good old ‘Etty’, my Etihad rewards card. The cards got on famously, only being taken out every other week for a small grocery shop, petrol purchases or the occasional meal for one. One day, everything changed. Etty climbed back into my wallet and declared, “Something’s not right fellas. The big man has just gone and booked four flights …….And they’re coming this way.” “But he’s single. I know. I buy his groceries.” dismissed Louie. “Not any more. You watch, next time I bet he does a big shop.” “Oh no!” exclaimed Primo “He must be a Marbar. How could we have been so stupid?” And, as predicted, a few weeks later the Marbar family arrived in Al Ain and the trouble began. Holidays are a time for enjoyment so the trip kicked off with a four
The rest of the boys weren’t happy either. Every day, at least one of them was called into action. Marbar added to the disgruntlement by adding a last day treat – swimming with dolphins at AED700 a head. “Can’t we just go and look at them?” asked Primo. “No, it’s the last day. I want to make it memorable” replied Marbar. “Memorable? You’ll be reminded every month for the next 12 months how memorable this trip was! It’s AED3500, do we get to take the dolphin home with us?” Shaking his signature strip in disgust, Primo declared he was now maxed out and retreated to the back of the wallet, exhausted after four days of spending frenzy.
Louie and Chip were now on duty. Chip’s suspicions arose when AED3000 was withdrawn. Nervously returning to the wallet he told Louie, “Something isn’t right. He’s just got AED3000 out. He never gets that much out!” “Where are we?” Louie asked. “A shopping mall. A big one. With a huge fish tank in it.” replied Chip. “This is going to be bad. I can feel it in my magnetic strip.” moaned Louie. With little enthusiasm for seeing the highlights of Dubai Mall, Chip and Louie did their duty as Marbar and family ladened their plastic friends with more debt. After a while, Louie could take no more… “Why are we outside the Alexander McQueen shop Marbar?” he asked. “Because my son wants to buy something from here.” “What’s wrong with Karama? I like Karama. Everybody likes Karama.” Louie said. “Because it’s not original and my son wants the carrier bag with Alexander McQueen on it. Okay?” answered Marbar. “What’s he buying?” enquired Louie. “A woolen scarf” “How much?” “AED1000” “Well, for AED1000 I hope they’re giving you the sheep the wool came from as well.” replied Louie in disgust. As the Marbar family finally boarded their flight back to the UK, the boys in the wallet, though tired and exhausted, decided it was time for a heart to heart with Marbar. Primo took the lead… “Look Marbar. You can’t do that to us again. We were all quite happy sitting in your wallet for nearly a year, kicking back and relaxing when suddenly you put us on red alert! We’re maxed out, our signature strips are worn away and it’s going to take a whole year to get back on track. Please don’t do it again.” “I’m sorry fellas. You’re right. I should have given you some warning. The good news is…that they won’t be coming here again” replied Marbar. “Thank goodness for that” the cards echoed together. “No. Next year we’re going to Disneyland.” “Aaarrgghhh!” The Source

H
orses have always played an important role in Emirati culture. They were traditionally seen as symbolic of chivalry, pride and nobility and the Bedouin certainly treated them like members of the family.
One gentleman who continues this tradition of his forefathers is Ali Al Ameri, the UAE’s only Emirati Horsemaster. We were given the chance to chat to Ali about his unusual career before he headed off to Australia to attend EQUITANA, the largest global annual equine event. Ali is internationally renowned in equestrian circles but his beginnings are humble. He was born and raised in Al Ain. From childhood he was surrounded by animals, with his family relying on sheep, camels and horses for food, transport and entertainment. He explains “falcons, camels and horses are so special in Bedouin

culture because we grew up with them; we’ve needed them; to survive and they’ve needed us.” It was while he was still a young boy that Ali discovered he had a special talent for taming difficult camel bulls, a skill that would serve him well as his career developed. Whilst at school, Ali’s interest in horses developed and he would often sneak out of class just to visit the Royal Stables to be around these splendid, beautiful creatures. He left school after Year 9 and joined the Royal Guard, a military group with horses. It was here that he discovered that training camels was not so different to training horses and began to get involved in breaking in horses and participating in show jumping events. Ali has been a Horsemaster for over twenty years now. He fondly reminisces how his career as a horseman began not long after he met his wife, Tracy Perkins, who is a “horsewoman herself”. Tracy was teaching at a riding school in one of the country’s hotels when she spotted Ali’s talent with horses. When her friend visited from Australia, bringing with him some majestic thoroughbreds, she convinced him to let Ali be the one to train them. Impressed with the horses quick progress after working with the young Ali, the friend requested that he continued his efforts and asked him to train a few more horses. From this point there was no looking back for Ali. He travelled to South and Central America, Europe and Australia to train and hone his horse handling skills. He giggles a little explaining how his extensive travels often landed him in hot water when he was missing from work for long periods of time.

Difficult hors es are his specialty, especially those that kick, bite and rear, and his most recent client presented him with quite an unusual challenge. The horse would lie down as soon as someone touched it. “In all my years of travelling around the world, I’ve never had a problem horse like this so it was an interesting challenge for me. Every day horses teach me something new.” Ali tells us how honored he felt to be the first horseman from the Middle East to be invited to participate in the EQUITANA event this November. “This is the most anticipated four day equine event which attracts over 50000 visitors from across the globe” he explains enthusiastically. The event features renowned educators, Aussie cowboys, Olympic gold medalists, an elite equine competition and over 300 exhibitors. Ali will be there to share his expertise and methodology via daily sessions under the titles ‘Establishing good manners’ and ‘Horse training for film work’. He will also be on the judging panel of the popular ‘The Way of The Horse’ contest to select the 2012 Champion. For the event’s grand finale, Ali will showcase his superb riding schools in front of a huge audience. As we bring our chat to an end, Ali tells us that, to date, he’s been fairly unsuccessful in training other people in his craft simply because “the talent remains unique.” When asked about lessons in life, Ali has only one rule...be
honest.
Ali’s extraordinary ability to turn crazed horses into calm and obedient creatures in an amazingly short space of time has gained him international acclaim. Some of his clients include the Sheikhs of the UAE, Queen Elizabeth and many other people across England, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. He has worked on the set of Disney’s ‘Young Black Stallion’, been involved in various movies for Arabic TV and participated in advertisements for events such as the Asian Games. Despite the fame and glory, Ali admits that, for him, it’s all about his love for animals and his success in “persuading a horse to get over its issues and become a horse again.” Ali always ensures that the horse owners with whom he works are satisfied. “I’m always happy to be able to help the horse and the owner”. ff the top of your head, which do you think would be the best way to become a great football player? a) Watch a lot of footage of Cristiano Ronaldo playing and then apply for a job with Manchester United. b) Watch the videos, go out to a football pitch, try to copy what you saw, practice until you get very good at it and then apply for a job with a football team?
Most people would probably go with b) and rightly so. Learning is an active thing and you need to be doing something with what you see or hear to make it part of yourself. For football, that means going out and kicking a ball. For university students, that means making notes during lectures. So, what’s the best way to take effective notes successfully? We asked a group of lecturers at Abu Dhabi University for their advice.

education Their first words of wisdom were pretty palpable! Check if there is a course on study skills that could help. You aren’t going to learn just by reading an article, you’ll need to practice. If not, try these ideas…. Start with the obvious. Get a loose-leaf binder notebook and put paper in it. Also, try to get some background topic knowledge on the subject of the lecture as countless studies show that having an idea about what you’re going to hear helps with note taking. In class, make life easy for yourself by sitting towards the front, it’s easier to hear and to ask questions about things that aren’t clear. Some lecturers recommended taking notes using the mind-map technique. Others suggest making notes roughly as you listen then making mind-maps later, when you have more time to think. You might try both and see which works best for you.
and which exit you should take from it. After the class, you should not think you have finished. Look over your notes, they’re bound to be a bit rough but the ideas should still be fairly clear in your mind. That might not be true in a week’s time, so try to rewrite as soon as possible, making the information as clear as you can. The new notes, however, still be notes, don’t try to write an essay. Review these notes regularly. Students who do this remember much more of what they heard the first time around and consequently remember it better in exams or assignments.

Don’t just copy off the whiteboard – lecturers don’t always put every important point on the board because they’re expecting you to do the writing. It saves time and lets them cover a lot more material. Notes shouldn’t be sentences – that’s too slow. Use abbreviations or symbols: & for ‘and’, for ‘leads to’ etc. Find ones you understand so you don’t have to think hard about what to use or strain to remember meanings. When there isn’t a quick symbol, use short phrases. Separate main ideas and supporting ideas. To help with this look (or listen) for rhetorical cues. These can be as simple as ‘first,’ ‘on the other hand’ or ‘for example’. A good lecturer will use these as signposts to help students navigate the information, just the way that your GPS will calmly tell you that you are approaching a roundabout

recipes Gingerbread Men Ingredients 1 cup softened butter | 1 1/2 cups white sugar | 1 egg 1 1/2 tbsp orange zest | 2 tbsp dark corn syrup or 1 cup brown sugar dissolved in 1/4 cup water | 3 cups all-purpose flour | 1 tsp baking soda | 2 tsp ground cinnamon | 1 tsp ground ginger | 1/2 tsp ground cloves | 1/2 tsp salt Method • Preheat oven to 190° C. • Beat the butter and white sugar until creamy. Add the egg and stir well. Stir in the orange zest and dark corn syrup and beat well. • Add flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, ground cloves and salt to form dough. Refrigerate the dough for 2 hours. • Grease cookie sheets. • On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into gingerbread men shapes using a gingerbread cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets. • Bake for 10 -12 minutes until cookies are firm and lightly toasted on the edges. • Decorate with colored icing.

Eggnog Ingredients 6 whole eggs and 2 yolks | 1/2 cup and 2tbsp sugar | 1/4 tsp salt | 4 cups full-cream milk | 1 tbsp vanilla extract | 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg | 1/4 cup heavy cream | additional grated nutmeg for garnishing Method • Combine eggs, egg yolks, sugar and salt in a heavy 3 or 4-quart pan. Whisk until the ingredients are wellcombined. • Continue whisking while pouring milk in a slow, steady stream. • Heat the pan over a low heat and stir mixture continuously for 45-60 minutes until it thickens. • Strain mixture through a fine sieve into a large bowl to remove any accidental cooked pieces of egg. • Stir in the vanilla extract and 1/2 tsp nutmeg. Pour into a glass jug and cover. Refrigerate this egg custard mixture for at least 4 hours (or up to 3 days) before finishing. • In a small bowl, whisk the heavy cream until it forms soft peaks. Fold whipped cream into cold custard mixture. • Garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg and serve chilled.

First things first. You need to establish the size of the budget as this is going to affect the rest of your planning. Get a figure, in writing, and stick to it. Next, gather opinions. You may have a great idea for which kind of party you would like but does it reflect everyone else’s? By asking your colleagues’ opinions you will not only get some great ideas but can also gauge who seems enthusiastic enough to help out with the planning. The more people you recruit, the easier your job will be.

It’s always a good idea to plan something outside the office. A change of scenery that doesn’t involve filing cabinets and photocopiers can really help get people in the festive mood. If you can’t get away from the office, go wild with decorations and turn your workspace into a winter wonderland. When it comes to gifts, you have a few options. You could go down the traditional ‘Secret Santa’ route where each employee buys for another with no-one knowing who bought what for whom. Alternatively, you can set up an area at the party where people can donate toys and gifts that can then be given to a local charity. If you’re giving your employees individual gifts, try not to opt for something emblazoned with the company logo. Something more personal, perhaps with their name or initials on, will seem much more genuine. A live band or DJ would be a great addition to get the party started but, if the budget doesn’t stretch to it, simply ask everyone to bring in their favorite compilation cd’s then put the player on ‘random’ and let technology take over. Ask around, perhaps someone in the office plays the guitar or sings well, you can’t beat a spot of local entertainment, especially if it’s free! Food and drinks can also be expensive. Put a list up in the staffroom asking everyone to write down one dish or drink that they will provide and then stock up on snacks like nuts, chips and crackers. Make sure you provide a selection of beverages including lots of fruit juice and soft drinks. This time of year is perfect for rewarding employees for their hard work and giving them a well earned festive break from the routine. It’s also a time to help strengthen teams, allowing people to mingle not only with one another but even with customers or potential clients. Follow these tips and you can guarantee your fun-filled gathering will go down so well that, guess what, you’ll probably be organizing next year’s party too!

Add a personal touch to your gifts this Christmas with these easy-to-make stylish bags

ifts bags are hands down the best option for presenting any gift this Christmas and it’s so easy to make your own stylish personalized designs in a few simple steps. All of the bags shown here can be made using the same basic template which you can download, along with the design file, from www.thesweetfacts.com

The template is designed to be printed on an A4 sheet, but for bigger bags, you can use a color photocopy machine and print out the designs as A3.

STEP 4 : Turn the paper over and score three quarters of the way down the sides of the bag. STEP 5: Place double-sided tape on the 4 tabs as shown. 24

STEP 8: On a piece of cardboard, trace around the outline of your shape, then cut out 5mm inside the line. Leave a square at the bottom of the shape as this is what will be used to attach the picture to the bag. STEP 9: Stick the shape to the board with double-sided tape and place another piece of tape on the cardboard square.

STEP 10: Stick the board inside the bag leaving the design level with the top of the bag. STEP 11: Using double-sided foam tape, attach a Christmas message. 4
STEP 2: Cut out the shape of the template using a pair of scissors or the craft knife and ruler. STEP 3 : Gently score along all the remaining inner template lines taking care not to damage or cut the paper. (You just want to make an impression so you can make a crisp fold in the paper.)

STEP 7: Cut out your embellishment shape using a pair of curved nail scissors to help with the tight corners. Using normal scissors may bend the paper.
What you will need: • Scissors • Ruler • Craft knife • Doublesided tape • Paper or photo paper • Printer •Ribbon and embellishments (optional) STEP 1: Print out all of the pages you will need from the design file. To get a high quality professional finish, you will need to use glossy photo paper. You can also use left over Christmas wrapping paper and trace the template onto the wrapping by hand.
STEP 6: Peel and stick the sides one at a time, in order starting from 1, until you have a proper bag shape.
STEP 12: Finish the bag by punching holes in the top and lacing ribbons through them to make handles.

Al Ain’s Historic Souq Al Qattara

o coincide with the UAE’s 41st National Day, Al Ain’s restored Souq Al Qattara has re-opened its doors to the public.
Head on over and take a step back in time, immersing yourself in history with a visit to this fascinating site. The culturally significant souk, so called by Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon himself, adds just another dimension to the Garden City’s growing plethora of tourist attractions. Dating back to the mid-20th Century, the souk was founded by the late Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan, former Ruler of Abu Dhabi. Ideally located on the palm tree-lined road linking the Al Qattara and Al Jimi Oases, the Souk boasts a truly unique setting. Quite typical of traditional Arabian markets, Souq al Qattara was a commercial hub, a meeting point and a thriving social center for Al Ain folk in years gone by. Originally consisting of 15 shops, with four more added in the 70s, the units were granted rent free to traders. Rice, flour, sugar, dates, spices and soap were brought from Abu Dhabi and Dubai in addition to local produce, a bakery, tailors and craft stores. The souk is set within the Bin Ati Al Darmaki fort which has been restored as a multifunctional arts center, perfectly integrating tradition with modern functionality. Open to the public throughout December and January, a range of cultural and heritage activities will take place and visitors can also enjoy Arabic coffee in a traditional coffee shop, handicraft displays, Ayala performances and Oud concerts. Visitors can attend lectures on the Emirates heritage, visit art and photography exhibitions and take part in specially organized family activities sure to delight audiences of all ages. December is a special month. It’s a time for festivity and fun, spending time with family and friends and catching up with loved ones. It’s a time of giving and of sharing and is the season of goodwill to all. And nothing quite beats a Christmas market for getting the holiday season underway. CZECH REPUBLIC Christmas markets in Prague are among the best in all of Europe. With one of the main markets taking place in Wenceslas Square, named after Good King Wenceslas from the popular Christmas carol, it’s a fantastic place to immerse yourself in the history of the festive season. The markets combine hearty food, impressively decorated trees and brightly colored huts selling ornaments, decorations and unique souvenirs. However, don’t go looking for a turkey dinner as in Prague carp is the traditional festive dish, something new to get your taste buds around. The markets here remain open throughout the whole Christmas season, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so it’s a great vacation spot if you’re looking for a winter getaway.
ESTONIA While Estonia might not spring to mind when it comes to vacation hotspots, for a winter break soaked in tradition you can’t go far wrong with this Baltic European country. Tallinn, the Capital, is rumored to be the site of the world’s very first Christmas tree, dating back to 1441 when small trees decorated in apples, nuts and paper flowers were erected inside people’s homes before the decorations were given out to children on Christmas day. Winding cobbled streets and winter clad visitors scurry from stall to stall enjoying the atmosphere and soaking up some of the oldest Christmas traditions in existence, perfect for a winter wonderland escape.
