Wild Dogs Kill

A pack of hungry, wild dogs raided an Al Ain cattle market after closing time, attacking both the sheep and goat pen. The dogs killed 35 animals worth approximately AED30000. The matter is currently under investigation and preventative measures have been taken to ensure the incident is not repeated.

Honing Safe Driving Skills Sixty-four Emirate Transport drivers in Al Ain recently attended lessons in safe driving by the traffic and police patrol section. The traffic department rolled out a traffic-awareness program that aims to reduce the number of accidents caused by negligent driving. Fresh from the Farmer Al Ain residents will soon have the option of buying local fruit and vegetables directly from the farmer. The Farmers’ Services Centre has announced the opening of six fruit and vegetable markets in the Garden City before the end of the year. Farmers will be able to set up stalls for free and the centre brand ‘Local Harvest’ will also have a stand. Fresh vegetables, herbs and fruit as well as eggs, honey and live birds will be on offer from over 1000 local farmers. New Address System For Capital Finding your favorite restaurant or explaining your location is set to get a whole lot easier thanks to the development of a unified address system by the Department of Municipal Affairs in Abu Dhabi. The new address system will uniquely identify each location and include a building number, street name, city name, emirate and assigned postcode.

The pilot project has already begun in Al Falah and Mariah Island in Abu Dhabi and will continue for four months. If the project is deemed successful, it will be rolled out across the other Emirates.

Bringing Society Together Last week, students from UAE University, Al Ain University and Umm Fazal School visited Al Najah Private Rehabilitation Centre, located in Al Markhaniya district in Al Ain for a day of interaction. Manager Mustafa Al Badrawi, welcomed students into the highly colorful, sensory environment and kicked off the morning by coordinating a friendly basketball match between students and kids attending the centre. Feedback from the university students was very positive and the children were delighted to receive flowers and gifts. Mr. Al Badrawi commended everyone involved commenting, "these types of activities connect the children of Al Najah Private Rehabilitation Centre with other society members and creates a feeling of likeness and brotherhood." Grade 3 Ghaith takes first place Grade 3 pupil Ghaith Mohammed Salem Al Ghafli, from Saladin School in Al Ain, took first place in ADEC’s first ever Braille contest organized by Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs. Omar Fayex Al Amri from Al Tamayoz School grabbed the second spot marking a huge success for Garden City students. Under the slogan ‘Everybody Reads’, the competition was conducted as part of Abu Dhabi Education Council’s (ADEC) aim to encourage all students, visually impaired or otherwise, to develop their reading skills and explore their literary talents.

Ms. Fatima Ahmad Al Kaabi, Head of Special Education Services at the Al Ain Regional Office, explained “Thanks to ADEC’s continuous support and guidance, we are keen to interact effectively with the community through participating in activities and events to fulfill these goals… we encourage our students to participate in such contests.” The Zayed Higher Organistation helps promote the use of Braille for cultural growth and language development and supports its integration in schools and the workplace across the emirate.

New bus terminal for Al Ain

Abu Dhabi Executive Council, under the chairmanship of Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of Tourism and Culture Authority Abu Dhabi, have announced plans to build a new bus terminal in Al Ain at the existing site of the current terminal. Musanada, a service company serving the Government of Abu Dhabi, has been given the go ahead to develop the terminal which will also consist of a waiting hall, convenience stores and a taxi rank.

A healthy body for aviation students HCT launch Wadhef Emirati Drive HCT Al Ain Men’s College is leading the way with the second installment of their innovative program embracing the vision of the UAE’s leaders in regards to Emiratization. Entitled Wadhef Emirati, the scheme aims to increase young nationals’ awareness regarding local employment opportunities and provides support in assisting candidates map out their future career pathways. It also offers sponsorship for talented local men and women, supporting them financially and socially as they go through their studies. Abu Dhabi Polytechnic's branch in Al Ain in the premises of the former Al Ain International Aviation Academy, hosted an open health day themed ‘A Healthy Body’ in association with the Aviation Club last week. Affiliated with the Institute of Applied Technology, Abu Dhabi Polytechnic's open day kicked off with a huge marathon followed by a blood donation drive and a fascinating demonstration from police dogs. Dental and optometry care, personal hygiene tips and healthy habits were demonstrated to attendees and students were impressed with the activities on offer.

UAEU Professor Secures Patent Dr. Azam Beg, an Associate Professor at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), has been awarded a Patent from the Intellectual Property Office in the UK for his data transfer invention.

Al Dhafra no match for Al Ain Al Ain swept to a stunning 3-0 victory over first division Al Dhafra last week leaving the home team to swallow their pride and learn from their errors.

A win for United Victory was well deserved for United Academy as they took a fantastic 4-2 win over visitors Skelps FC from Kuwait. Many parents and football fans came out to catch the action at last week’s game in the Garden City.

United Academy seeks to create opportunities for young enthusiasts to learn football with specialist training programs formulated to create a truly excellent next athletic generation. They also do a great job scouting talent for Pro-league champions Al Ain FC.

Ismaeil opened the scoring for the Garden City after only 14 minutes game time and Ali added another just before the halftime whistle. The second half saw Al Dhafra gain some composure but not enough to stop Al Ain who rubbed salt in their wounds with another goal in the 76th minute from Alex Brosque. Al Dhafra’s Coach insisted his team, currently playing in the first division, would learn from the match in a bid to enhance their chances of competing regularly in the pro-league.

Victory for Wessels in Wilson Tennis Cup Dutchman Peter Wessels took first place in the Abu Dhabi Wilson Tennis Cup Men’s Open at Zayed Sports City earlier this week despite some strong competition from longstanding rival Emirati Omar Behroozian. After the match, Wessels commented “It was very tough today. Matches against Omar are always tough, even when I win in two sets. Physically for me, this was the toughest final I have played against him. I was really struggling out there, but I made it and I am very happy.” All was not lost for Behroozian however, who took gold in the Men’s Doubles with partner Dale Fawcett. feature Ioana* was 18-years-old and scared. Hailing from a tiny village in the north of Moldova, both her parents long since dead, she had been desperate for money when her boyfriend told her she could easily find work as a waitress in Turkey. Jumping at the chance to gain some independence, she let him organize the trip, pay her airfare and even kissed him goodbye as he dropped her at the airport. She trusted him completely – after all they had been dating for over two years. A friend of his met her at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport where he informed her that the waitressing job had already been filled. Reassuringly, he told her not to worry, that he would take her to Dubai where there was more than enough work. Disappointed but optimistic, Ioana agreed, especially after a phone call to her boyfriend who assured her the friend was legit. They flew to Dubai together and were met by an Arab man at the airport. A few hours later, a woman from Turkmenistan arrived and took Ioana to an apartment in Dubai. That was when reality hit - Ioana had been sold. The woman had handed money over to the man and Ioana’s passport had been taken from her. Reaching the downtown apartment, a terrified Ioana discovered five other Moldovan women, who told her they lived there and worked as prostitutes in nightclubs to pay off their ‘airfare debt’. The Turkmenistan woman, essentially the girls’ pimp, was aggressive and violent, beating girls who disobeyed and a petrified Ioana had no choice but to get to work. She was beaten if she refused to have sex and was told she would be paid only after covering the expenses of bringing her to the country. Every day, she was taken to apartments across town for sex or to nightclubs where she was forced to solicit, while an ever present burly security guard made sure there was no chance of escape. Finally, one day, Ioana got access to a client’s mobile phone and managed to send a desperate text message to a friend in Moldova, who alerted authorities in Dubai enabling them to trace her whereabouts and rescue her from her captors. Sadly, Ioana is one of the lucky ones. Millions of victims are trafficked worldwide and the majority of them have no chance of escape. Recent figures from the United Nations (U.N.) show that over 2.4 million people every year are victims of human trafficking at any given time and that only 1 in every 100 is ever rescued. Hollywood actress Mira Sorvino is the face of this modern day slave trade, lobbying Congress since 2009 to stand up to traffickers and constantly thrusting the problem into the public sphere. Speaking as a U.N. goodwill ambassador last year Mira divulged, “More is spent in a single month [in the US] fighting the war on drugs than all monies ever expended domestically or internationally fighting slavery from its inception.” More has to be done. Here in the UAE, authorities have recently declared war on the problem. Since 2006, strict measures have been introduced including Federal Law 51 which states that human trafficking crimes can now carry life sentences. In 2007, the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT) was initiated to implement the required legislation to help prevent trafficking. The Committee is also responsible for providing ongoing training to police, prosecutors and airport staff to help them identify trafficking victims. In 2009, Abu Dhabi became the first emirate to open a women’s refuge with the inception of the first Ewa’a Shelter, a nongovernmental entity working under the umbrella of the UAE Red Crescent. Excellency Sarah Shuhail who, along with her staff, has to strive to remain emotionally strong despite some of the soul-destroying cases they come across. Recently, they had a case where the victim was a young girl, barely 5-years-old. With cases like this it’s hard not to question humanity. The women at the center provide shelter, emotional support and medical assistance to victims whilst the government undertakes the process of prosecuting their captors. The Ewa’a Centers are a huge step in the right direction in combating human trafficking – a terrible crime which is essentially modern day slave trading. However, much more remains to be done. Raising awareness, encouraging a vigilant society and fostering a community spirit are small changes that can add up to help eradicate trafficking and give everyone their right to live with dignity.

Her Excellency Sarah Ibrahim Shuhail, Executive Director of Ewa'a Shelters speaks about Human Trafficking.

ast week, I had the humbling opportunity to sit with HE Sarah Ibrahim Shuhail, the Executive Director of Ewa’a Shelters for Women and Children – an organization that is essentially the backbone of humanitarian work carried out by the UAE Red Crescent Authority in terms of helping victims of human trafficking. Her Excellency was warm and friendly, welcoming me into her office and happy to show me around the shelter’s facilities. After a career in education spanning three decades, Ms. Shuhail came to her position with a wealth of life experience. After witnessing some of the awful tragedies of human trafficking, she was spurred into action to give something back to society, and to her beloved country, by taking charge of Ewa’a Shelters in an attempt to provide psychological help, here medical care and legal support to those who have suffered at the hands of traffickers. Initiated back in 2008 at the decision of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the organization now successfully runs three shelters, one in Abu Dhabi, one in Sharjah and the third in Ras al Khaimah. Over a hundred women have since passed through Ewa'a Shelters and the duty takes its toll on its dedicated team. And yet, looking at this smiling, inspirational woman, you would never know. Speaking with passion, Ms. Shuhail explains that she draws her strength from the mother of the nation, HH Fatima bint Mubarak, the widow of the late HH Sheikh Zayed (may God rest his soul). Not only does HH Fatima provide financial support to the shelter, but she remains ever present in order to guide the organization in the right direction, sit with and listen to the victims and provide mental support for Sarah Shuhail and her team of committed staff. Smiling fondly, Sarah tells us, “HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak has been a great role model. Her role during my time in the field of education and, of course, here at the shelters is very much appreciated and never goes unnoticed."

and forced her into the sex-trade. Her heart bleeds for the women and even more for the children of the victims, who are entirely unaware of what's going on but are all too aware of the negative effects and uprooting of their mothers. In order to combat this negativity, Ms. Shuhail and her staff try their utmost to create a homely atmosphere in the Ewa’a Shelters to provide a sense of normality for the victims. She explains, “The main objective behind opening the shelters was to provide the existing victims in the different emirates with a safe and secure place, in addition to creating a sense of normality." The victims arrive physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted and a lot of Sarah’s role involves listening. “We listen to their painful stories and aim to help bring them out of that dark phase of their life. Medical help is provided and counseling is offered as well as re-creational activities to help women get their lives back on track and reclaim their right to normality.”

Ms. Shuhail's previous experience in education also helps to keep her focused on the task at hand. Having served the Ministry of Education for 31 years, Her Excellency has seen more than her fair share of problems, dilemmas and solutions. As a school principal, she explains that she “was like a mother figure to all my students, as well as being their care-taker, teacher, instructor and trainer. For the up-bringing of a generation that yields fruitful results, I had to treat them as a mother treats her children.” This motherly nature is clearly evident in her work at Ewa’a, where she shares an emotional connection with many of the victims. Certainly, such a delicate subject has caused Ms. Shuhail to suffer many a sleepless night and she recalls her early days in the position, “Almost daily I would come across very depressing incidences that would make me question humanity and how anyone could conduct such an inhumane act.” However, she realized she has no choice but to toughen up in order to be the support that the victims so desperately needed. Every day she got a little bit stronger and never lost sight of her goal of helping any victim by any means possible. Of course, that’s not to say that Ms. Shuhail is now able to block out the emotional distress that goes along with her role as Managing Director at Ewa’a. She tells us the distressing tale of a married woman, who was brought to the country by her husband, where he then revealed himself to be a trafficker and forced the shocked woman into prostitution. Another woman, who was 45-years-old, was employed by a tailor when her brother-in-law approached her

t’s that time of year when high school or college students are beginning to think about the next step. Deciding what you want to do is only one part of the equation. Once you get that far down the line, you then need to consider where exactly you’re going to do it.

When it comes to choosing which university you’re going to opt for, there’s no flow chart to help you out. Instead there’s a range of questions that you need to consider. And consider carefully. They aren't in any particular order, but you should think about each of them before making your final decision. First up, does the university in question have the course that you want to take? That might seem obvious, but it can happen that they run courses similar, but not exactly the same as the one you want. Secondly, will they take you? Now, you can look at this one from two directions. Lots of people want

to go to universities like Harvard or Cambridge, but they won't take just anyone. The other side of it is that they might take you if you look interesting enough to them. Check out the admission procedures, you might be surprised. Similarly, can you afford to go there? Again, there’s two ways of looking at this. Many universities offer scholarships to students that they would really like to have. Before you reject a place as being overly expensive, you should find out if they might pay some or all of your fees. Another question is how easy is it to get there from home? Some students want to come home (with bags of laundry) every week, while others are happier to be out there on their own, proving that they can make it by themselves – a bit difficult to do if you are a short taxi ride away. Some research before choosing where you are going to study may just change your life, so it's definitely worth doing.

Not so long ago, my students persuaded me to start ‘tweeting’. At first I was hesitant, but now I have to admit that I’m enjoying the interaction outside the classroom. Seeing how smartphones, laptops and iPads are so readily available in every student’s hands, it’s fairly obvious that digital know-how has jumped into the mainstream of education with full force. Digital literacy can be defined as having the skills to effectively and critically use, evaluate and create information using a range of digital technology (e.g. computer, tablet, or cell phone). Obviously, kids today are digital wizards. But we should ask ourselves: are they really ‘search-savvy’? Most likely, if we were to give our students a topic to research, they would quickly get online and ask captain ‘Google’ for the information. They would then, more than likely, take one of the first results that comes up on the screen. What we need to teach students is that the items listed are likely in order of popularity, not in order of reliability. Being able to critically and fundamentaly search is an important aspect of digital literacy that needs to be developed. How do we develop that skill and help our learners become search-savvy? Here are some of the key points… 1. Begin with training of critical thinking and language skills. Narrowing their focus to a more specific idea, and then selecting key words or synonyms that will help them to search for a given topic. 2. Next, show them how to utilize the diverse search tools that various search engines offer. For example, searching by images, news, or reading level. Here are just a few search engines that are very kid-friendly and would be great fun to practice on. l Kids Click (www.kidsclick.org) l Yahoo Kids (kids.yahoo.com/search) l Fact Monster (www.factmonster.com) l Quintura Kids (quinturakids.com) l Ask.com (www.ask.com) 3. Demonstrate how to critically sort through results. Take the time to teach about credible resources, scholastic-based resources and valid resources. Some critical questions to ask when deciding if the information is credible are: a. Who is responsible for the website? Is it from a trust-worthy organization? b. Who wrote the information? Does the author have any credentials or experience? c. When was the information written? Is it current and still relevant? d. Are the sources cited? Or is it just someone’s opinion? Love it or hate it, the digital age is here to stay and sharp searching skills for every student is a must!

DanceFit, a new Zumba and dance studio, is the brainchild of Chelsea McGregor and her partner Monica Pulgarin. Located on Sheikh Zayed Road, the fabulous DanceFit studio offers a fun range of classes designed with women and kids in mind. Creating a fun and friendly atmosphere, DanceFit helps women feel rejuvenated, healthy and fit. We chatted to Chelsea McGregor about how she came up with her business idea. 1. Why did you decide to set up a dance studio specifically focusing on Zumba? Zumba is a worldwide phenomenon, so we decided that we would piggyback on that success and not just use Zumba but also carry the same formula across other styles of dancing. It’s all about fitness, dance and fusion! Zumba is so much fun that you don’t really feel like you’re working out. If you love something, it doesn’t feel like work. Our clients enjoy coming to the studio because they learn new routines. It’s always changing; not like slogging it out on a treadmill. 2. What are some of the biggest challenges that you faced? It’s always important that you do thorough research before opening a business in the Emirates. You have to ensure that you have the correct licensing and permit. We outsourced and if we hadn’t, it

3. How do you keep your staff motivated? We set goals and we try to have a pleasant working environment. We empower staff by allowing them to make their own decisions with regards to choreographing for classes. We always encourage and nurture them to be the best that they can be.

4. How long does the process take from inception to actual trading? It depends on the business model. Our business took six months from inception to operation. We were fortunate to have found our location quite quickly so we were able to do it in a a reasonable time but six months is a realistic amount of time. 5. What advice would you give to anyone starting-up a business? It is important that you always have enough operating capital. Leave enough capital for marketing to grow the business. 6. Besides your own, what company or business do you admire the most? Personally I love the health and beauty industry. I really find it fascinating. Richard Branson is somebody who is amazing; he’s just got a knack for understanding what people want. 7. Do you plan for the future? I plan, but not too far ahead. I try to have a skeleton or some sort of structure so I have a two to three year plan. That’s what’s realistic for me.

Steak Fajitas with Avocado and Tomato Salsa Avocado and tomato salsa: 250g quartered cherry tomatoes| 2 trimmed and finely sliced green onions|1 peeled, diced large avocado| 2 tsp lime juice|salt and pepper to taste

Method • Prepare salsa by placing the cherry tomatoes, onions, avocado and lime juice in a bowl. Toss gently and combine salt and pepper. Cover and set aside. • In a separate bowl, combine beef strips, oil, sweet chili sauce, salt and pepper, yellow and orange peppers and mix well. • Cook the steak mixture in a large non-stick frying pan for 2-3 minutes or until seared over a high heat. Transfer to heatproof bowl and cover to keep warm. • Put tortillas on a plate, cover with a slightly dump paper towel, microwave for 30 sec-1 min or follow directions on packet. • Fill fajitas with steak and salsa mixture, and top with lettuce, cheese and sour cream. • Serve hot.

STEP UP CANCER I TO SUPPORT KIDS WITH

t’s estimated that around 100000 children die unnecessarily from cancer every year due to a lack of early diagnosis and available treatment. In fact, a study conducted by the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences’ Centre for Arab Genomic Studies indicates that pediatric cancers represent 9.5 per cent of all cancer cases in the UAE with an average of 9.2 cases for every 100000 Emirati children. Among the twelve major types of childhood cancers, leukemia, cancer of the brain and of the central nervous system account for more than half of diagnosed cases. Here in the UAE, it’s been discovered that acute leukemia is the most frequent childhood malignancy.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan and in collaboration with the Red Crescent, the 2km walk aims to raise funds and awareness to help hospitals in the region provide better care for kids suffering from cancer. Proceeds will also support research into the causes, prevention and treatment of childhood leukemia and other cancers. Mr. Ayman Gharib, General Manager of Al Ain Rotana explained, “We started sponsoring such charitable activities a couple years ago; we believe that as an established organization in the Emirates, we have a social responsibility to serve the people of our community.” Over the last two years the Charity Walk has raised over AED 250000 and this year’s walk will boost that figure even further.

What’s even scarier is that the World Health Organization has predicted that levels of pediatric cancer in this country are set to increase. The government is making enormous efforts in the battle with cancer rolling out early detection programs and educational campaigns across the country. And yet, every day children are dying. It’s our social responsibility as a community to pledge our support to the fight against cancer and, this Friday, you have the chance to do just that. THE 3RD CHARITY WALK FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER will take place on Friday, February 22nd right here in the Garden City.

f you’re a car aficionado, or even if you just want to see something a little quirky, then you should definitely consider taking a trip to the exclusive Emirates National Auto Museum, located just 60km south of Abu Dhabi. This marvelous museum is the private collection of HH Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nayhan, fondly known as the 'Rainbow Sheikh' thanks to his passion for all things bright and colorful. The huge pyramid-shaped museum houses an astonishing fleet of vehicles with over 200 cars, trucks and SUVs. There are some particularly unexpected vehicles including military tanks, a Red Cross vehicle, a New York taxi cab, an NYPD car and a huge oversized replica of a Dodge Power Wagon complete with a built-in apartment! This particular find was listed in The Guinness Book of World Records back in 1993. Some of vehicles have been purchased from their owners and then customized to suit the exhibit or the Sheikh’s preference whilst many others were received as gifts

from around the world. Probably the most impressive exhibit is Sheikh Hamad’s rainbow collection of 500 Mercedes-Benz SELs. The story goes that when HH Sheikh Hamad got married, the celebrations lasted for seven days, so he called Mercedes-Benz in Germany and ordered the production of these seven unique cars. Each of the Mercedes is brightly painted in one of the seven colors of the rainbow and every car is fitted with a refrigerator and a TV. Many of the other vehicles in the exhibit are also rainbow colored or have a rainbow logo painted somewhere, complete with matching seats and hubcaps, and you can be rest assured that the overall infusion of colors will be certain to keep little motoring enthusiasts entertained! The excitement of the exhibition, with all its colors and creations, might just leave you feeling like you need a bit of a refuel, don’t fret, there’s a small coffee shop perfectly placed for you to fill up your tank!

Most first time visitors will base their sightseeing in Manhattan, one of the five boroughs making up New York City. Manhattan, with its numbered streets, cardinal points and subway system, is very easy to navigate, particularly if you’re staying mid-town. There's some wonderful architecture, although given the density it’s not always easy to appreciate at ground level. Head for the Empire State or Chrysler Buildings to experience some striking skyscrapers
