Students Exhibition in cooperation with Al Ain Mall
As the proud Principal of Al Ain English Speaking School and on behalf of all students, staff and parents I would like to thank Al Ain Mall for giving us this opportunity to showcase the talent of our school community. The artwork formed the backdrop of this two week themed exhibition (February 24-March 7th) which included the work of students of all ages covering a range of subjects and live activities. Shoppers in the Mall were entertain*-ed, educated and generally made more aware of the talented youngsters and staff we are fortunate to have in our school.

It was by chance, that I glanced at the magazine stand in Al Ain mall’s entrance that introduced me to The Source magazine and my my, let me tell you, from page 1 your magazine had my attention till the very end.
Hello Ms Skirka, In the short while I've been here, this is the first time I’ve read The Source and I must say, it's very resourceful. It's amazing the variety of in-depth stories you have featured in the magazine. I enjoyed reading the articles on NYC, it made me nostalgic about the trip I took with my friends when I was in university. The story on human trafficking and how HE Sarah Ibrahim Shuhail is so involved in rehabilitating the victims shows us that there is still hope for humanity. The 'Chill out,' and recipes make good leisure time reads. In one way The Source can be compared to a smart phone, small yet filled with everything a person could need. Keep up the good work. Regards, Komal R. Lakhani (Al Ain)

Being in Al Ain for nearly 2 yrs now and to be honest and common, let’s face it one tends to get robotic with the mundane duties of everyday life and thus generate a routine for oneself, and with a teeny-weeny social life there’s not much to look forward to except the monthly escapes to Dubai and the yearly vacation back home!! :D But having taken a new year resolution to open up my mind to the endless possibilities of life, I must say the entry of your magazine in my life couldn't have come at a better time! What I love the most about your magazine is the variety of the content, it’s really like my little black book of Al Ain! One can find almost everything they need to know about Al Ain in it. I have recently started following the events listed that are taking place here with family and co workers and trust me it really has broken up the routine I have been living in!! The next one on my list is the 3rd charity walk for children with cancer! Without your magazine, I would have never known about it!! What really prompted me to write in was my tremendous appreciation for your piece on the human trafficking article and the Ewa project. I believe it’s only when such delicate issues are brought to the public’s attention that awareness is created which is the first step in eradicating such menace! So here’s a big pat on your back and a huge thank you for the great work your team is doing. I’m looking forward to reading a lot more of 'THE SOURCE" in the years to come!! Cheers Ashlin Varella, Al Ain

Until now, the item has yet to receive any bids! And if you ask us, it’s no wonder!

A GLASS A DAY
To celebrate Arab Water Day which took place on March 3rd, the UAE under the leadership of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nayhan has been mobilizing global efforts to conserve water resources. We can all help out by simply designating one glass for our drinking water each day or by refilling a bottle. This will not only cut down the number of glasses to wash but it will also save energy and money.

Toxic Water In Country’s Wells Recent studies carried out on wells in different parts of the UAE indicate that six out of 14 wells are contaminated with high concentrations of bacteria. Dr. Ruwaya Al Kandi, from the biology department at United Arab Emirates University explained that almost 43 per cent of the country’s water wells are contaminated with bacteria and, if consumed, can remain in the intestines of both human and animals. The quantity of bacteria in the wells exceeds the standards level for safe consumption and irrigation of crops. Dr. Ruwaya advised the public not to drink water from the wells to avoid the high risk of contracting intestinal infections.

US Ambassador Visits UAUE
Emirates Wildlife Society is calling for people to participate in the up-coming worldwide event of ‘Earth Hour’, an initiative that works to save energy and raise awareness across the globe. Many of the country’s most prominent landmarks will be plunged into darkness for the sake of a bright future including the Burj Al Arab and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. “Turning off the lights is just the beginning as millions of people want to take action and see a sustainable future for our planet,” stated Ida Tillisch, Acting Director General of Emirates Wildlife Society. Make sure you join the movement and switch off all non-essential lights and electric devices for an hour on 23 March, between 8:30-9:30pm to show your support for a sustainable future.

Imagination is Inspiration
TESOL ARABIA HAPPY
Paddy’s Day HE Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nayhan opened last week’s 19th TESOL Arabia conference with a speech which pointed to imagination as the key to good teaching. Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd, His Excellency said, “To know is nothing at all. To imagine is everything” before encouraging teachers to bring their imagination to the classroom. Around 1600 educators flocked to Dubai’s Hyatt Regency Hotel in Deira to attend the International TESOL Arabia event under the
theme ‘From KG to College’, which had a strong emphasis on English learning for all ages, a move away from the typically tertiary level education that is dominant in the ESL spectrum. The event was co-chaired by Les Kirkham and Sandra Oddy from Al Ain who have been prominent members of the association for a number of years and there were hundreds of exhibitors and speakers on hand to provide information and resources to teachers and educators alike.
Wahat Hili Nears Completion
The UAE celebrated the global event that is St Patrick’s Day on March 17th by turning the iconic Burj Al Arab green and emblazing a giant shamrock on its surface. The traditional Irish event is now one of the most widely celebrated occasions in the world and Emirati-Irish family, the Al Fardans, were delighted to be invited to take part in the event. Irish mother, Georgina Al Fardan who met Emirati husband Maher in Dublin said “It was very special for the family to be invited to turn on the greening lights at Burj Al Arab. Just like our family, it’s been a perfect fusion of Ireland and the UAE!”

Al Ain Reserves Power Through
First Ever Arabic Rugby Manual
Emirati rugby took a huge step forward last week with the production of the first ever rugby coaching manual in Arabic, sponsored by HSBC. Aimed at providing Emirati students with a comprehensive introduction to the sport the manual covers game rules, player positions, technical skills and nutrition tips in order to
enhance the level of the sport throughout the country. As part of the UAE Rugby Player Pathway Programme, the manual will be distributed to over 2400 school-aged Emirati children by the end of 2013 and will accompany the distribution of starter kits, including rugby balls, bibs and boundary cones, to teachers and coaches in schools.
It was an emphatic win for Al Ain in Sharjah last week as they grabbed a 3-1 win over Al Shaab in the final round of the Etisalat Cup. With their coach and many of their first team players, struggling to cope with the strain of The President’s Cup, the Pro League and Asian Champion League commitments, the club decided to field a team of young reserves. The youngsters did them proud, opening the scoring with a shot from Ahmad. In retaliation, Al Shaab who were also without many of their key players, grabbed an equalizer in the 32nd minute with a shot from Kaseke but Malalla put the Garden City side ahead again just before half time. Another second-half strike from Ahmad saw the score finish 3-1 to the visitors and credited the youngster with the man of the match nomination.
Abu Dhabi Eagles fly high! Abu Dhabi Eagles scooped top spot in the recent 27th Inter-Gulf Netball Championships. The ladies competed against 20 teams from the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain before finally clinching victory 11-10 over Dubai A in the finals. The win sees the Eagles retain their inter-Gulf title for another year.
7th International Athletics Contest The 7th international athletics meeting took place at Al Ain Club for the disabled this week, under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council. For the first time ever, the event also saw participation from able bodied athletes who were part of the 300 strong crowd of athletes to take part. Paralympics medalists were also in attendance and over 21 countries were represented.

ADRENALIN FUELLED ACTION AT By Farid Nouisser
O
ver 2000 eager spectators flocked to Yas Marina Circuit last week to witness the adrenalin filled event that was the UAE debut of Ferrari Racing Days 2013. Combining the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Asia Pacific series with non-competitive Formula 1 rockets and the recently developed owner-driven XX cars, the weekend certainly lacked nothing in excitement.
The Ferrari Challenge is a popular event that brings together both racing novices and competition veterans. Drivers with competition experience race with separate classifications, while the gentleman drivers vie for the coveted Trofeo Pirelli title. The result is a fantastic show, on a level playing field, enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike. The XX program was developed by Ferrari’s Corse Clienti department and boasts some of the most amazing auto racing machines ever produced. The FXX and 599XX series have been exclusively manufactured for track use and provide an essential collaboration between Ferrari’s research and development team and a select group of owners. This non-competitive attraction takes owner-test drivers around the globe to some of the most prestigious tracks, honing their driving skills whilst delighting thousands of racing enthusiasts. If you’re thinking that you may be partial to purchasing one of these XX babies, let me explain how it works. Basically, you hand over huge wads of cash only to be told

Personally, I like to think of the F1 models as the highlight of the event and, in the case of the F1 Corse Clienti program, the cars are indeed the main feature with a history of famous victories and drivers. F1 cars are relatively short lived on the pro circuit and, after having completed their tour of duty, they are sold to private buyers for a hefty chunk of change. A growing number of privileged enthusiasts are acquiring these cars and joining the ranks of an elite F1 owner-driven club. They engage in non-competitive events at famous circuits
across the world and receive all the Ferrari bells, whistles and support that guys like Schumacher usually enjoy. If you’ve never experienced the up close and personal roar of a Formula 1 race car trust me, it’s something you need to hear. Witnessing such an extraordinary machine and savoring the adrenalin rush as the scarlet beast screams past a mesmerized crowd is a never to be forgotten experience. Marc Gené, the official Scuderia Ferrari test driver enthralled crowds with his amazing display behind the wheel of a Formula 1 F60, the same car used by Kimi Raikkonen at the debut Formula 1 race in Abu Dhabi back in 2009. Reaching ridiculous speeds as he whizzed around the track, Gené topped things off with a testosterone fuelled display of doughnuts that blanketed the grand stand in a cloud of smoke that you couldn’t help but taste. Ferrari MEA General Manager Guilio Zauner was more than happy with the success of the event and the decision to have brought Ferarri Racing Days to Abu Dhabi. The Source was delighted to have been invited along to capture the excitement of the day for our readers and I was particularly grateful to have lived a day immersed in a sea of Ferraris. Feeling exhilarated and somewhat in awe, I left the track behind and made my way down to the parking lot. Climbing into my green Astro van, I turned on some racing tunes and dreamt of a red paint job and perhaps even a spoiler on the family truck as I cruised all the way back to my own home circuit of Al Ain.

that you can never take the car home and park it in your garage!! Yup, that’s the deal. Make no mistake, the car is most certainly the property of the buyer and, with adequate notice, he (or she) can book a slot at the next available Corse Clienti event. This slot includes high end accommodation and a weekend packed full of track driving with all the support of Ferrari’s finest crew. When not in use, however, the car stays in Maranello, Italy under the watchful eye of its creators.

JEEP JOLLIES
in the heart of the desert By Farid Nouisser
I
f you’re into cars, then chances are you’ll have heard of the Jeep Jamboree before. For those of you who haven’t, let me explain.
Basically, it’s the oldest and largest organized four wheel drive event in the world. The roots of the event can be traced all the way back to California when, in 1955, the very first Jeep Jamboree saw over 150 people tackle the Sierra Nevada Rubicon Trail, now considered the ‘Granddaddy’ of all four wheel trails. Since then, the event has exploded in popularity and spread throughout the world with thousands of people getting involved each year. Now, keeping this in mind, you can imagine my excitement when I got a call a couple of weeks back inviting me to take part in Eastern Motors’ annual Jamboree right here in the UAE. My initial excitement weaned slightly when I had to (rather shamefully) admit that I didn’t actually have a Jeep with which to participate. However all was not lost as those kind souls at Eastern Motors took pity on a non-jeep driver like myself and arranged to have a brand spanking new 5.7 litre Grand Cherokee waiting for me at the event’s meeting point. It’s fair to say I was pretty stoked!
Four exhilarating hours later, we returned to the camp to feast on a luscious lunch before enjoying an afternoon of family fun with bouncy castles, camel rides, quad bikes and loads more to keep the little ones entertained. Returning to our family camper, I couldn’t hide my disappointment when I had to hand over the keys to that Grand Cherokee which had fast become my new favorite toy. At least we have the memories of a fantastic day to cherish and, who knows, maybe one day we’ll get a Jeep of our own! If that happens, we’ll definitely make sure we’re regulars at Eastern Motors’ annual Jeep Jamboree!
Awaking nice and early on the day of the event, my family and I headed out to the meeting point on what was a beautiful UAE spring morning. As promised, a Grand Cherokee 4x4 desert destroyer sat gleaming in the sunlight, waiting patiently as we transferred over all our belongings from our trusty family van. There were over 100 Jeeps in attendance and, after a quick safety briefing, all 450 participants travelled convoy-style to the Jeep Camp located in Al Khazna. Safety was top priority for the day and the groups were determined according to expertise level before skilled Marshalls took charge and demonstrated exactly how dune-bashing should be done. Personally, it was my first time to try piloting over the dunes but it wasn’t long before I’d mastered the knack and my family and I were able to cruise around the desert having a whale of a time. Having such experienced guides around put my mind at ease regarding any safety concerns and I was able to relax and enjoy the adventure.

SAMA Quartet
- an enthralling musical ensemble!
B
By Mehak Alam
arbershop vocal harmony is a style of a cappella, or unaccompanied vocal music that dates all the way back to the early 1900s. The name stems from a time when barbershops served as socializing points for young men who, while waiting for their turn would chat to one another and share their thoughts and ideas. Often, the barber shops were so busy that men spilled out onto the street and, every now and again, a sing-song would break out, whether in store or on the street corners. This was essentially the birth of barbershop quartet music.
quartet in the entire Middle Eastern region. 25-year-old Alawi Alsafi was studying at the American University of Sharjah when he was introduced to barbershop music, thanks to one of his engineering professors. He was immediately hooked and vocalized his ideas to start up his own group. With a little help from his professor, he began his search for three other members. “I was very picky when choosing members for the band as I wanted everyone to understand the notes, music and style that I was planning" says Alawi, well aware that this particular style of music is a specialized field that requires special harmonizing techniques that not every singer can produce.
We got the chance to catch up with four young men, right here in the UAE, who are intent on introducing quartet music to the emirates. Known as Sama Quartet, the group is the first Arab barbershop
Sama Quartet collaborated with Emirati production house Shabab to create the album ‘Bashar’ 16
The Source
After a lot of searching, Alawi found his fellow band mates and, combining the initials of all four members (Mohammed, Sami, Anas and himself), Sama Quartet was born. Right now, the group are going from strength to strength, starting off with local performances and progressing towards an international platform. Things weren’t always plain sailing though; the group vividly remembers their first performance at the university which didn’t quite go to plan. Anas Bukhashem, the eldest member of the group, laughs, “The production of our first piece then wasn’t really on par with other performances.” He notes that a lot of hard work followed and ultimately paid off when the group performed, for the second time, at the Choir Symposium Festival in Indonesia amid fantastic reception. Mohammed Nabil Murad, a 22-year-old civil engineer, is the lead vocalist in the quartet. He’s been singing since he was a young boy and music seems to run in his family, as his elder brother is the renowned Palestinian singer Ahmed Nabil Murad. He mentioned some of the obstacles the group has faced in bringing barbershop style music to a local audience. “Expats and especially Westerners relate more to the music we produce than Arabs do.” Alawi echoes these thoughts and explains that his own family aren’t too keen on his choice of musical genre. “My family, like most other Arab families, is very conservative in terms of culture and relate to specific kinds of music only. Although they’re very passionate about music, they don't completely appreciate what I do.” His biggest supporter is his elder brother, the established Khaleeji singer Osama Alawi.
to take care of compiling an album. Until then, the groups’ focus stays strongly on their live performances. Anas explain that they love performing as “it gives us the chance to build our audience.” Sami Al Haj, the fourth member of the group, grins widely and adds “our audience is anybody who wants to listen to us and wants to be at our performances”. The group utilizes YouTube and social media channels to help connect with their fans and are quite certain that one day, all their hard work will pay off. “Being the only barbershop quartet in the region gives us a bitter-sweet kind of a feeling as we have the spotlight on us all the time which is great but we also bear the responsibility of having to do our very best every time we perform.”
LIFE LESSONS
• Believe in yourself and never lose faith. • Don't let negative comments affect you; stay focused on your goals. • Never do something because others ask for it and don't stop doing something because others don't like it.
The obstacle of bringing barbershop music to an Arab audience was highlighted further in 2012, when the group performed as part of the popular TV show ‘Arabs Got Talent’. The reaction from the judges wasn’t favorable and the group didn’t make it very far. The flip side of the coin however, was that the group gained popularity amongst the general public, especially the youth. This helped instill confidence in Sama Quartet and gave them the strength to continue working hard to succeed in something a little bit different to what other groups in the region are doing. They get stronger every day and have strict weekly practices to help improve their performances and make sure to continue watching performances of some of their favorite quartets such as OC Times, Max Q, Crossroads and Vocal Spectrums. Since 'Arabs Got Talent' the guys have gone onto perform at various venues throughout the emirate including SIKKA 2013 and The Score's Choir of the Year Competition where they competed against many choirs and were lauded with compliments. Right now, their focus is on building a strong behind-the-scenes production team
SAMA Quartet will perform on March 27 alongside star opera singer Bryn Terfel and Brighton College choir. The Source

All About Al Ain English Speaking School With almost two terms in office as Principal of Al Ain’s Premier International School I would like to offer some initial reflections on the school and its community. Firstly, I would like to introduce my senior management Team. Mr. McSheffrey, Vice Principal, along with Mr. Lone and Mrs. Williams, Assistant Principals (Secondary and Primary), ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the school. In addition to their many duties they are involved in strategically looking at whole school improvement planning and ensuring that the high expectations made of all staff and students is seen in practice. As an International Community School we are very conscious of the need to recognise and respect our surroundings and the culture of our hosts in the UAE, while at the same time remaining true to our remit of high excellence through the medium of the British National Curriculum and the demands of over 60 different nationalities in the school.
I am constantly amazed at the rich variety of talented students in the school who excel in sport, music, drama and oratory as well as in their academic studies and personal development. There are daily examples that demonstrate the positive community feel and ‘ownership’ the students sense about the school, supported by like-minded staff that give freely of their time and who are more than happy to support the school and students at every opportunity. The parent ‘FRIENDS’ association continues to be a great asset to the school community and the dedicated parents not only raise money for school resources but provide essential and clear school/home communication and information.
Mike Smith
The overall success of the school, including the high academic achievement and personal development of the students, is a result of the high quality teaching and learning in the classrooms and the dedication staff give to putting student needs at the heart of all they do. The school is in partnership with SSAT ME (Specialist Schools Academies Trust Middle East) and benefits from its expertise in terms of business and financial management, overall strategic management and professional development opportunities for staff. The partnership will undoubtedly support the continued development and improvement of the School and help secure its future in maintaining its high status within the educational community in Al Ain and beyond. Raising Readers By Khudayja Saloojee
“Once upon a time in a magical land there lived two beautiful fairies with bright pink and orange hair…” I fondly remember the days when my daughters would snuggle on either side of me while I read them their favorite story. I often ask myself, what’s the most important trait that I’d like to develop in my children and, like many parents; smart kids are at the top of my list. That’s probably why we all spend so much time looking for the best schools and ensuring that teachers exceed our expectations. Often however, we forget that as parents we wield the power to adequately prepare our children with the foundations for academic excellence simply by making books an integral part of their lives from an early age. At just a few months of age, an infant can look at pictures, listen to your voice and even begin to point to objects on pages. When you read, it lays the foundation for language development and there is an increase in activity in kid’s internal language centers as they try to store the spoken words in their memory. THE BENEFITS OF READING Bonding time - Cuddling together to read a book builds a special bond between the two of you. Reading not only allows you to share a good story but also to impart your thoughts, feelings, values, lessons and beliefs to your child. Academic excellence - One of the benefits of exposing a toddler to reading is that they will have a higher aptitude in learning. If a child struggles to put words and sentences together, they will find it difficult to be successful in other subjects. Reading is the cornerstone of success and it will motivate them to continue learning, even when they are not at school. Developing skills - Reading helps develop listening, communication and language skills and helps build a good vocabulary base. Nurture the love of reading - Personalize stories by replacing some of the character’s names with those of your children. Encourage creativity and imagination by leaving gaps in the story for older kids to fill in or make up alternate silly endings. Visit the library frequently and allow kids to choose their own books. Encourage them to take books along when you visit restaurants, go camping or are just hanging at the pool.

It’s the simple things… By Hayley Skirka
If you ask me, sticking your hand in your jeans pocket to fish out a long-forgotten, slightly crumpled AED100 note is one of the greatest pleasures in life! Whenever this happens, it’s like a little ray of sunshine shone down just for you! It would seem that I’m not the only one who thinks, this as a recent study by UK Company 'The Money Supermarket' has revealed it’s the little things in life, like discovering forgotten money, that make us happiest. Forget fancy holidays, expensive cars and designer clobber, most women questioned cited much smaller incidents when asked what gave their daily happiness levels a boost. Have you ever got a call or an email telling you that you’re the winner of a competition? The thrill of that is hard to beat, especially if it’s been so long since you entered that you’d forgotten all about the contest. On this one, I must admit that I speak from experience having been on the receiving end of far more than my fair share of competition wins (a trend that I hope continues!) The survey also revealed that one of the greatest pleasures for women is getting to the checkout, only to discover the item they want to purchase has been reduced. As the majority of us are dedicated shopping enthusiasts, I can see why this made the top ten!

Losing ½ lb when you haven’t been trying was another top pick as was boarding a crowded train and spotting that last spare seat, then managing to nab it before anyone else! All things considered, it seems that we’re satisfied by the small pleasures in life, although that being said if anyone wants to offer me an exotic holiday or a fancy car I’d certainly be willing to test drive the effects that has on my own happiness levels!

PLAN FOR YOUR
Golden Years
M
any of us are in the prime of our life. The thought of old age and retirement are pretty far off. And yet, they are thoughts that we should all be giving a bit more attention to as without careful retirement planning, there’s no guarantee that we’ll be able to maintain the standards of living to which we’ve become accustomed. Everyone wants to retire with personal and financial peace of mind and the key to that is to start planning NOW and get growing your Golden Nest Egg. Start saving and keep saving If you’re already saving for retirement, keep going! We all know that saving is a rewarding habit and if you're not saving now, then it's time to get started. Start small and try to increase the amount you save each month. The sooner you start, the more time your money has to grow. Make saving for retirement a priority. Devise a plan, stick to it and set goals. Remember, it's never too early or too late to start saving. Know your retirement needs Retirement is expensive. Experts estimate that you will need about 70 to 90 per cent of your pre-retirement income to maintain your standard of living when you stop working. Take charge of your financial future. The key to a secure retirement is planning ahead. Purchase long-term insurance Unfortunately, we’re all going to die one day. That’s why it’s a good idea to purchase long-term care insurance. Buying long-term care insurance may not seem to have to do anything with a retirement savings. However, if you do need specialized care when you get older, if you have insurance you won’t need to take the money out off your retirement fund to pay for it so you’re actually buying a policy that protects your retirement savings. Consider basic investment principles How you save can be as important as how much you save. Inflation and the type of investments play important roles in how much you'll have saved come retirement age. Know how your savings or pension plan is invested and learn about your plan's investment options. Put your savings into different types of investments. By diversifying this way, you are more likely to reduce risk and improve return. Your investments may change over time depending on factors such as age, goals and financial circumstances. Financial security and well researched knowledge go hand in hand. Keep working This is likely to be the least popular tip! A person around the age of 65 will no doubt be looking to leave the workforce and retire. If you continue working, it gives your retirement portfolio a chance to increase in value for a few more years and remember, compound interest adds up over time. A person entering retirement age has a few options available. You can simply stay at the same workplace. You can take a step-down approach; whether by decreasing your working hours or finding another job that is less demanding. This will result in less income, but give you some free time and a reasonable pay off. Don't touch your retirement savings If you withdraw your retirement savings now, you'll lose the interest and you may have to pay withdrawal penalties. If you change jobs, leave your savings invested in your current retirement plan. Cut investment fees Cut investment fees as much as possible to protect your nest egg. An investor will find it difficult to avoid all fees with a retirement account. It pays to look for advisors that charge fewer fees than others. Familiarize yourself with fees before signing on with an advisor. It can help save you money in the long run. Ask questions While these tips are meant to point you in the right direction, you will still need more information. Talk to your bank or a financial adviser; don’t be afraid to ask questions and make sure you understand the answers. Get practical advice and act now.

The Sapphire was crowned the biggest boat at the show

By Hayley Skirka
ast week, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, opened the doors to Dubai’s 21st International Boat Show.
Yachts and boats worth over AED1billion were on display and the theme of the day seemed to be the bigger the better. Gulf Craft, a UAE manufacturer, announced a luxury super yacht, the largest to be constructed in the company’s 31-year history. The fantastic vessel will be named 'Majesty 155' and is set to be completed in two years time. In total, there were over 400 boats on display more than a dozen of which were categorized in the super yacht category and, they
simply, oozed luxury. Visitors were aplenty and businessmen and women mingled with families in the glow of the evening sun as they fantasized over these stunning vessels. Over 25000 people visited the show in the five days and sales were at a record high. French based company Iguana Yachts premiered their amphibious boat which can travel on both land and sea, showcasing what can be achieved as technology advances. Set to be popular in the UAE, the company envisions buyers from this region will fall in love with the boat which will be able to function on wide open desert spaces as well as sailing comfortably on the ocean. This year’s largest boat was the 160-foot Sapphire by UAE based Behnemar while credit for the biggest, fastest title went to the Mercedes AMG Cigarette Racing Black Edition, capable of reaching up to 108knots. There was plenty going on away from the boats too with Dive Middle East exhibiting their diving equipment, having live demonstrations and trial diving sessions. The retail village was a great place to bag a bargain while the Heritage village was a popular haunt for those looking to catch a little bit of local culture and perhaps win some fantastic prizes. Car enthusiasts got their fix at the Supercar Promenade where there were Bentleys, McLarens and Rolls Royce machines on display. The carnival-like atmosphere was provided by entertainment from local DJ’s and an exciting jazz band that performed sporadically throughout the day.

There was an extra special visit to the festival for ten kids from Dubai’s Thalassemia Centre organized by Dubai Health Authority. The children, aged from 4 to 17, enjoyed a private tour onboard triple-decker yacht ‘Moon’ courtesy of Ultimate Charter, followed by lunch on floating restaurant ‘Iran Zamin’ thanks to Emirates Waves. The kids and their parents stayed on afterwards to enjoy the rest of the festivities that the boat show had to offer.

my world Build a sandcastle on Bamburgh Beach and you’ll have the real castle right beside you to model your creation on
So what exactly is it that you’re looking for? Roman remains? Got ‘em. Ancient castles? We’ve lost count of ‘em. Golden sandy beaches? Oh, miles and miles of them. Beautiful scenery, hills, villages, lakes and mountains? You won’t have enough time to explore them all. Northumberland was the edge of the Roman Empire and they built a wall across the land to mark that fact. You can still see a lot of Hadrian’s Wall, get out of the car and walk along it. Granted, it’s in ruins, but visit the Vindolanda site near Chesterholm and you can see a reconstruction of the wall. Go during the summer months and you will see people re-enacting battles and demonstrating what life in Roman times was like. Would you like to dig on one of these sites? Well, you can go as a volunteer and do that too.
Start your Roman Adventure at Hadrian’s Wall which stretches across the north of England
And Northumberland was never only a place of battles. Go to Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, a place that becomes an island when the tide is high, and you can find the remains of the monastery that produced the Lindisfarne Gospels, regarded by many as one of Britain’s top treasures. The island is beautiful and many famous painters such as Turner, Thomas Girtin and Charles Rennie Mackintosh all painted on Holy Island. Drive on along the coast from here and you’ll stumble across some Explore the Lindisfarne priory, just make sure you get of Britain’s best beaches. There’s a real castle right there of war, murder and revenge? The border with Scotland was the that you can use as a model. Afterwards, revel in the mythical story home of the Reivers, cattle rustlers based in both countries who of the ‘Laidly Worm’ which tells the tale of a kind king in Bamburgh would ride out to steal the livestock of folk not connected with their Castle who lost his true love and had to marry a beautiful but cruel families and drive them back home. When the King’s son went across the sea, the witch turned a few lonely sheep, border raids (or reives) could see up to 3000 his daughter, Princess Margaret, into a dragon or a ‘Laidly worm’! men on horseback gallantly participate.
