nother year has come to an end and the planet is preparing for the grand finale celebrations. It is a time for remembering, rejoicing and above all, a time to conjure optimism, inspiration and hope for the New Year ahead.

A perfect time of year to express gratitude and spread cheer whenever possible; I will begin by extending a massive THANK YOU to the people I have had the pleasure of working with during the course of 2013. To the many clients and sponsors that have played an essential role in the success of The Source, we say thank you for believing in us and we look forward to growing with you in 2014. Our hats go off to the many readers that have brought us into their lives and homes and proudly shared the spirit of Al Ain. An incredibly special “shout out” goes to the home team at The Source head quarters, where we do our best to put together a little magic every two weeks. There is truly never a dull moment around here as our lean and mean machine moves from issue to issue. Stress, joy, pain and yes, even downright suffering can be on the daily operations menu of ‘ours truly’. And no matter what the obstacles are, we always pull through with smiles on our faces! Here’s to the owner, who we like to refer to as Abu Source, and the entire team for doing an outstanding job in 2013. May the New Year continue to bring us success! As for New Year’s resolutions, I resolve to focus more on the many blessings I have and continue to enjoy, rather than on the many wants and desires that often consume us in this material world. Keeping resolutions is much more difficult to achieve than making them so I wish you all the success in your pursuit of happiness in 2014! Now get reading and find out where you will be on the BIG night!

SLEEPING TRAVELER!

Each new day is a blank page in the diary of your life. The secret of success is in turning that diary into the best story you possibly can. Douglas Pagles

STOP WASTING GAS

y k c a W d l r o W Tom Wagner was flying from Louisina when he fell asleep in a window seat near the back of the airplane. When everyone deplaned at the layover, nobody woke Wagner up. He woke up at his layover in Houston, in a pitch-black and cold cabin, and the aircraft doors were locked. Luckily, his cell phone wasn't dead.

"I called my girlfriend, and she thought I was crazy. I said, 'Debbie I'm locked on the plane,'" he told ABC. "I said, 'I'm telling you the truth. You better go somewhere and get me off this plane." Half an hour later, the United Express crew boarded the aircraft and rescued Wagner. Post the incident, Tom Wagner stated that the authorities at the airport wanted him to keep the incident quiet. He was given a stay at a nearby hotel, in addition to a $250 flight voucher to make the ordeal go away.

Increase your gas mileage by checking your tire pressure. More than a quarter of all cars and nearly one-third of all SUVs, vans and pickups have underinflated tires. If every driver kept his or her tires properly inflated, we could save 2.8 billion gallons (10.6 billion liters) of gasoline a year -- and help curb global warming pollution -- so inflate the tires on your car or truck and continue to do so once a month or as necessary.

Is your mobile phone fake? Eros Group provides tips to spot counterfeit mobile phones from genuine ones in the market. • Price - This should be the very first thing one should look at. If the price of the mobile phone is a lot cheaper than the original price of the phone then it is most likely to be a scam • Appearance - On viewing the phone closely always check and observe the difference in weight, screen size, location of buttons and battery, quality of printing and paint finish, added or missing functions, quality control stickers and holograms. • Missing or Added features - Counterfeit mobile phones can have differing features compared to the genuine models, some can have features missing or ones that are unlike the original. For example, built in cameras might be said to be 8 Megapixel when they are not - or offer GPS when they don't. Counterfeit phones may also differ from a genuine in color availability, memory capacity, screen quality and operating system. • Unofficial Models - The disadvantage of having so many mobile phone models in the market is that it’s easy for imitations. Once you choose a phone, ensure that it is available in the official manufacturer’s catalogue, website, etc... • Keep your receipt - Not only will it be your 'proof of purchase' when claiming warranty,

it’ll also save you time in remembering the store where you bought your mobile phone. If you’ve found that your phone is a fake, you can use the receipt as evidence when you report it to the proper authorities. • Warranty - All genuine mobile phone manufacturers offer a limited warranty that covers the handset, software and accessories which is mostly one year from the date of the purchase, however, fake phones rarely come with a warranty or offer any customer support or servicing of damaged parts. • IMEI number - Every genuine mobile phone has a serial number to register it to a carrier network. This number is called

Winner of Fiat 500C announced

the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. The IMEI number can be used to verify the legitimacy of a phone. Often counterfeit models won’t have an IMEI number or use a fake one. • Registration – Equipment such as Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE) must be registered with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) before it can be used, sold or distributed in the UAE. Registered equipment shall be marked or have a mark on its packaging and user information to show that it may be used in the UAE.

Abu Dhabi University’s first media speech contest Abu Dhabi University-ADU, hosted the first ever inter-school media speech contest at the Al Ain campus that aimed to trigger an effort to shape future media leaders, turned out to be an amazing accomplishment as it served as an interacting medium for the students, teachers and audiences.

Mrs Wilkinson, a receptionist at Al Yasmina School, was the lucky winner of a brand new Fiat 500C, after entering a competition at the inaugural The Life & Style Show UAE which was held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre (ADNEC) in early December. The car was donated by Western Motors, the authorized distributor of Chrysler Jeep and Fiat in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The Fiat 500C was presented to Mrs Wilkinson in Abu Dhabi at Western Motors’ Fiat Showroom on Airport Road on Monday 23rd December by Mr. Mohammad Al Momani, General Manager of Western Motors. Mr. Mohammad Al Momani, said: “Western Motors is a responsible organization which always looks for ways to engage with the community, and the Life & Style Show’s competition was the perfect venue. 12

The views of the contests were boldly expressed by the students and teachers. Twenty six students from five various high schools in Al Ain participated in the contest. The participants, in groups of two were required to speak for 8-10 minutes each, on the themes of either Impact of media on society or usage of social media that tested their public speaking skills and confidence. Lin Wael and Rana Ibrahim from Al Sanawber School, Mariam Mohammad and Isra Al Tarbaghia from Al Dhafra School came second, and Yasshfeen Saajid and Benzer Noel Bright from Our Own English High School won the third position.

while back we published a story about a new healthcare facility that provides acute long term care for patients in a unique and inspiring surrounding. Provita now has a facility in Al Ain and is making a major difference in the quality of life enjoyed by its residents. This is one of the many human stories shared by Provita, and this particular one comes from the New Al Ain facility.

28-year-old Bader has spent the majority of his life confined to a hospital bed with very little mobility and requiring continuous ventilation. First diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (a rapidly progressive form of muscular dystrophy) in his early teens, Bader was able to walk with difficulty until the age of around nine when his muscle weakness deteriorated and he became bedridden. As his condition worsened Bader suffered respiratory failure and cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart); his ability to communicate was also severely affected. Bader’s family were forced to witness his decline feeling powerless to help his situation.

On admission to ProVita in Al Ain earlier this year, Bader’s quality of life was severely compromised and one of the main priorities for the team developing his care plan was to enhance this as much as possible. ProVita provides acute long-term care and rehabilitation in a home like-setting with patient rooms spread across residential villas. Bader receives Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy aimed at improving his general muscle strength and gross motor function, as well as encouraging participation in daily activities such as selffeeding and developing his communication skills. What Bader appreciates most is how the ProVita team listens and responds to his likes and dislikes, giving him the freedom to make the choices that affect his daily life. He says, ‘’everyone cares for me here.’’ A fun-loving and sociable young man, Bader enjoys spending time outside in the evenings and has been able to enjoy several outings and activities including attending his sisters’ weddings and taking a trip to the mall where he went shopping and visited the cinema. Seeing the expression of joy on Bader’s face as he joins in activities has given his family a profound feeling of happiness. Bader’s mother has noticed the difference in his communication skills as well as the ability to move his fingers, feed himself and grasp objects which he was previously unable to do. ProVita’s therapy team is working towards enabling Bader to use an electrical wheelchair and reduce the need for ventilation. For Bader and his family, ProVita offers hope for the future and a renewed lease on life. The Source

MY

WARDROBE

T By Maha Mehboob

he New Year is just around the corner and along with it come all those resolutions. Getting rid of junk around the house has always been a popular resolution but this year, why not consider decluttering your closet. Most women have complete disorder living behind their closet doors. Go ahead, be the fashion police; swing those closet doors open and

find out if it’s full of things that you don’t wear anymore? Or whether you are storing dozens of garments that are out-of-season? And is your evening gown hanging next to your jacket? Don't worry, you are not alone. In fact nearly every woman has a messy closet at one point or another. To be frank, my wardrobe is a mess too and my first new year’s resolution is to start clearing the cluttered wardrobe. If you are planning the same, here are some easy tips for refreshing and organizing your closet chaos.

1. EMPTY IT OUT: Before you start organizing your closet you are going to have to empty everything out. Pull your clothes out in sections and go through every item. 2. SECTION THEM OUT: Start by sorting your clothes into piles. For example, pile all the T-shirts in one place, jeans in another, jumpers in another, etc. This will help you to see exactly what you have and it will also make the tidying process easier. 14

The Source

3. TRY IT ON: Before moving ahead, try things on and be honest while answering these questions: Do I really wear this? Do I love it? Does it look good on me? Is it age appropriate? Does it go with my personality? Once this is done, you will know what to keep and what to get rid of. 4. DONATE: You should now have accumulated several items that will be suitable for charitable donations. I know that you spent a lot of money on these pieces but you are not wearing them and chances are that you will never wear them again, so do the right thing and make someone else happy with your donation! 5. RE-ORGANIZE: At this stage you should be left with only the outfits that you wear and are most precious to you. You can now arrange these by color or type. I prefer putting one type of clothing on every shelf. If it's winter you won’t be donning those tunics any time soon. So put them on the bottom shelf. The top shelf should consist of clothes that are in accordance with the current season. Jeans and T-shirts should stay somewhere near the middle as they are worn all year round. Socks and under garments can stay somewhere near the bottom of the closet. If your closet has a hanging rail and no shelves, keep all your jeans and jumpers together. Voila! You are done (at least for 2 months). Your garments will be hanging with dignity in your beautiful and clean wardrobe, and opening your closet doors every morning, figuring out what to wear, won't be such a battle anymore. Ring in the New Year by doing yourself a favor and get your wardrobe sorted out!

I The Art of Barbecue stuff for men

Jeff Skinner

t’s a heavy smell that hangs on your clothes. It drifts through a neighborhood drawing attention to the hickory sizzle. Like cavemen, we step out of our holes grunting our approval for someone, somewhere barbecuing. Right now the evening breeze brings us outside and hungry for meat thrown over glowing coals or spinning over a pit of dancing fire. Where I come from we call it grilling and barbecue is a tangy sauce to baste meat. Here in the UAE, a barbecue is anything over a natural bed of smoldering heat. All visitors to this land bring their unique blend of spices and sauce to the chunks of slightly chard pieces of meat. Men, a proper barbecue teaches us two things: patience and persistence. Until I moved here I used a propane tank to barbecue. Here, I am learning the art of barbecue with charcoal. It has taken many attempts to get it just right. The coals have to be stacked, ash covered, and placed correctly for direct heat or indirect heat. I am not a patient man but I am learning to be patient when waiting on coals. The more I force myself to wait the longer it takes, but I’m learning. If you want to learn patience, practice by choosing to stand in the longest line at the store. I’ve had my share of undercooked meat as well. Persistence comes from trying all over again, messing up one more time, and trying again. I haven’t perfected the art of barbecue just yet but the next time you are near The Village, you will catch that smell hovering in the air. That is my persistence. There I will be, next to my barbecue, patiently waiting for coals to ash before the grilling begins again. People walk by and want to stop and talk. Strangers turn into friends and neighbors become like family. God gifted man the art of barbecue because he knew man was not created to be alone. Come on over, let’s get together, let me get to know you better. That’s why we barbecue. It’s not always an easy concept but a great stretch in the skill of becoming a true neighbor and gentleman. I don’t know about you but now I am hungry. Its barbecue season, get out there and make the world smell hungry! A few friends have shared with me their barbecue suggestions from around the world; now you can try them too…

makeover

The time has finally arrived to share a glimpse of the 2 lucky winners of The Source’s second exciting “Style Me” make-over competition. They spent a beautifying day with us being transformed into the latest Al Ain Divas! BEFORE

'I never dress up... but I want to feel fabulous', says the 38 year old Respiratory Therapist at Tawam Hospital. Maria Rita is a busy working woman and mother of three that finds it challenging to get ready for a special occasion. She has recently delivered her third baby and been neglecting herself a lot. She has donned the same style for decades now. LOOK 1

LOOK 2

Makeup & Styling “We wanted to give her a clean and elegant look for the day. Light eye shadow, black liner and black mascara helped brighten her beautiful eyes. With rosy cheeks, light lip color and curly hair Maria Rita looks’ both chic and elegant”La Popuee Beauty centerAl Ain. Look 1: With a subtle tan and amazing hair, the electric blue evening dress suits her perfectly and provides for a stunning entrance. The dress also added height, making her legs look slimmer and longer. Look 2: The long black dress was a-perfect-evening-outfit for Maria. With short sleeves and a long hemline it boasts beauty and elegance for a woman in her 30s. “The clutch and minimal jewelry added the final touches to her look. She usually hides behind shapeless black and white basics despite having a fantastic size 12 figure. Our aim was to stop her from hiding behind understated, oversized dresses and find her some figureflattering and eye-catching fashion essentials”-Splash Fashion-Al Ain Mall.

Maria Rita’s Verdict: “It’s not something I would normally choose but it’s flattering without being clingy. I feel comfortable and confident now. My husband and people around me are impressed and that’s the best part.”

feature BEFORE “Breast Cancer has left me with a disproportionate body”, says Rita Ruaya Maburang. Rita is 38 years old, has battled stage 3 breast cancer and is unhappy with her post treatment appearance. Like many other breast cancer patients, I lost my hair from the chemotherapy and my skin looks pale. She wants to look and feel more feminine. LOOK 1

LOOK 2 Makeup & Styling “We simply wanted Rita Ruaya to look confident and charming. We focused more on giving her a healthy and glowing look. Glossy lips, shimmery cheeks, dark eyes and blow dried hair gave Rita a ready-to-party look”- La Popuee Beauty center-Al Ain. Look 1: Striking colors accentuate her skin tone, and we chose a red detailed net dress along with black leather tights to flatter her flamboyant personality. Look 2: Her bottom and thighs are her least favorite body parts so we hid them beneath this white chiffon long dress and got her a pair of platform shoes to elongate her legs. “Rita Ruaya looked amazing with the bracelets we added to jazz things up. She has a fantastic figure for her age. Bright colors look great with her skin-tone and she should definitely lean away from her usual basic black. Our aim was to prepare her for a life of shining brightly!”-Iconic-Al Ain Mall. The Source would like to thank the hair stylists and make-up artists at La Poupee Beauty Center-Al Ain, the staff at Splash Fashions and Iconic (Al Ain Mall). Without them the second installment of The Style Me Makeover Competition wouldn’t have been possible! And a special thank you to all our readers for sending in their entries and the winners for spending a memorable day with us!

Rita Ruaya’s Verditct: “I feel fantastic! Everything is loose-fitting but not shapeless. I would have never known that white and red could look so good on me. I am ready to party!” giggles Rita Ruaya. The Source

Trend Alert Three Key trends for Women this Fall 2013 by Naturalizer Footwear

Driven by popular demand we are dedicating a portion of our magazine to fashion and will begin with a little taste from our friends at Naturalizer Footwear. Watch for the new and exciting fashion addition in the New Year!

The After Shock dress 799 AED

This Fall/Winter 2013 Naturalizer has created a line that best represents the Naturalizer woman with the trend-right fashions for the season we know she will love. From clean & classic looks, to casual everyday wear, Naturalizer has carefully chosen the top trends combined with the finest materials and details that will make her feel beautiful in every step she takes. For more than 85 years, Naturalizer continues to understand that a woman’s favorite shoe is the one that delivers both style and comfort. In line with our history, this line offers the following key trends for the season:

CLEAN CUT

Inspired by the desire for a simple and modern aesthetic, this trend is strong yet simple with neutral colors grounded on wooden tones. You will see color blocking along with material mixing for an eye catching contrast. Detailed with strong ornamentation and distinct heels; from flat backs, block heels to sculptured pumps. This is a trend that can take her directly from work to play without missing a beat.

NEW TERRITORIES

Casual wear inspired by wild nature with ethnic touches for a more outdoorsy approach to everyday fashion. Keen on “wearability”, you can see this nature inspired look in a range of colors, shades of pines & earthy browns mixed with berries and blues.

ECCENTRIC HERITAGE

The inspiration for this trend was based on the 1940’s flair with a touch of elegance from British Lords – making these styles masculine in a feminine way. Buckles, straps, tassels and lacing details to accentuate the stylish menswear of the time. This trend is full of deep jewel tones such as red and teal in combination with tones of mustard, rust and earthy browns on tasseled loafers with heels for that traditional feminine look.

Did you know? • Muna Harib Al Muhairi is the co-founder (along with Nojoud Al Bastaki) of Buksha Social Enterprise that supports low-income Emiratis in the country.

• Mona Harib Al Muhairi is also the founder of the Seeds of Change group, established to promote random acts of kindness in the UAE on a dialy basis. • If you wish to volunteer please visit www.facebook. com/BreathingNumbers, Twitter @Breathing_N, or Instagram @ BreathingNumbers “Outdoor adventures and sports are part of my life – I love the adrenaline rush” says Muna Al Muhairi who unlike other women, left the comfort zone of her home and dedicated her time and energy to helping people living in a state of endless suffering and despair. “A lot of us watch or hear about the distressing conditions facing Syrian refugees in Jordan, but very few of us would actually plunge into humanitarian action for them”, said Muna, who believes travelling has helped her understand the human side of her personality. “You see the challenges people face and become more understanding about what drives them. Travelling teaches you tolerance”, she added. “Since the conflict in Syria began, I wanted to do something but didn’t know where to start. I was not an organization and it is difficult to get authorization to enter the refugee camps as an individual. People told me that it would be impossible to get there. I challenged myself to defy our usual state of helplessness and launched a project called Breathing Numbers. The aim of the project (launched in May 2013) was to document the stories of Syrian refugees in the refugee camps in Jordan.” “My first goal was to document what I had seen in the camps, but on my return, I realized that Breathing Numbers should not merely become the voice of refugees, it should also be the hand extended to help them. Once again it was time for action. I developed a vehicle for collecting financial aid for medical emergencies by selling peace necklaces”, she shared. Hard work and dedication are paying off in Muna Al Muhairi’s fight to end human suffering. Her effective use of social networking sites is increasing the necessary public awareness to bring the masses forward in the fight. “Being close to the earth, my inner human voice and roots as a human being drive my passion. But to truly hear this inner voice we must focus less on the luxuries we constantly indulge in, said the young lady who is striving hard to serve the depressed and wounded refugees in Syria and the helpless people in Costa Rica.

How to prevent accidents at home

M

ost accidents happen at home. No matter where you live, the potential for household injuries lurks around every corner. You can prevent several accidents at home by taking a few simple precautions.

Fires: Fires start suddenly and spread very quickly, putting lives at risk. The kitchen is where some of the most serious home accidents occur. •

Most fires starts in the kitchen so don’t leave pans on a hot stove unattended. Do not allow babies or children anywhere near pans where food is being fried and keep panhandles turned inward so that children cannot reach them and pull them over.

Matches and lighters should be kept far away from the reach of children.

If you suspect a gas leak, open the windows turn off the supply and don’t operate switches to avoid sparks that lead to fires.

Portable heaters must have a working guard to keep them safe from little hands. Also, don’t position portable heaters near furniture or curtains. Do not use heaters for drying things or place anything on top of them.

For smokers, make sure that cigarettes are put out completely and there should be absolutely no smoking in bed.

Preventing fires is very important and one of the best ways to prevent injury or death as a result of fire is by using smoke alarms. These should be checked regularly and batteries replaced.

Electrical issues: Many accidents and injuries involve electricity. It provides so many benefits but it must be handled with care. •

Do not use appliances that have worn or damaged wires as these can cause electrical shocks and are a fire hazard. Buy good quality appliances, these usually have better quality standards and safety checks.

The bathroom is not a good place for portable electric appliances, including hair dryers, hair curlers or straighteners etc. Water and electricity do not mix!

Never overload an electric socket. Keep electrical extensions away from children and make sure these are not congested with too many wires or have poor ventilation around them.

Prevent falls: These are the common causes for many a sprain, fracture and other injuries. •

If you have stairs, make sure the stair rail is effective and sturdy. The bannister should not be wet and should not be used as a slide. Consider using anti slip strips on the stairs to prevent slipping and ensuing falls. Repair any damaged stair steps. Fix torn carpeting, loose boards, or uneven steps.

Bathrooms are also areas where falls can result in serious injuries. Use grab bars and nonslip mats in tubs and showers.

Make sure there is non-stick backing on all area carpets.

If anything is spilled onto the floor it should be wiped immediately to prevent slips.

Clutter on floors and stairs is another way to trip and should be cleared and stored correctly.

Install nightlights in the bedrooms of the elderly and children to help prevent falls during the night.

Water safety: If there is enough water to just cover the nose and mouth, it is a drowning hazard. Children in bathtubs or near water should be supervised. •

Make sure children observe safety rules and keep their safety equipment like flotation devices, in good working order. Replace these when damaged or torn. •

Do not keep wading pools, buckets or other water receptacles full of water when they are not being used. •

If there is a swimming pool in or near your house, make sure the access to it is restricted and it is supervised. It should ideally be fenced with a lock on the gate. Make sure pools don’t have toys left in them that can attract small children. Your home should be a source of comfort and a safe place to be for you and your family. With a few precautions and some forethought, this can be achieved.

Developing Number Sense in Children

T

eaching children numbers involves number recognition as well as, counting, reading, writing, comparing and ordering, learning estimation, rounding and place value. The “language” of math itself is like learning anything else; it requires presentation, practice and persistence. It is a “foreign” language in and of itself and also involves the use of memorization that can be facilitated

rote count 1-20, for example, children should develop a sense of “four” or “three” or “one”. One game I used yesterday was giving the children 3 numbers in a row. They had to come up with the fourth number. For example, I wrote a number line on the table, pointed to it and said, “Six, seven, eight…. They had to say “nine”. These types of games are a good assessment tool and provide a quick survey of who is having a little difficulty gaining number recognition and ordering. Another thing to keep in mind when teaching children counting is that if they have 2 receptacles to count from and into, they do better than missing numbers by clumping the objects together or over counting. Helping children is the aim.

One of the natural ways children learn to count is via the use of their own fingers. This helps children make the link between a physical object and the number they are trying to figure out. It’s okay to encourage this. In Grades K-2, the use of manipulatives or physical counters is prevalent. In the “real world” this is not the case. Making the connection with math and its applications in the real world is a good idea. For example, the children buy food every day in the cafeteria. Using the prices of sandwiches and juice is one way to begin the process of introducing them to addition and subtraction facts.

Other games such as “Gladiator” in which children have a list of numbers in front of them are very helpful. Two children are asked to come up with 2 reserves, one for each child. The teacher gives an addition fact or a simple number, and the children use either their hands or fly swatters to hit the number. If they get it right, they continue on and if they don’t the next child comes up to be the contestant. Such games are fun and the children watching are not just passively sitting but trying to come up with the answer themselves. It’s fun for everyone and can be rewarded with stickers or team line leaders. Number addition facts should be learned to 20. Multiplication should be used to 10. Learning place value is key for children. This is something children can build on in their future schooling. Gaining addition and multiplication fact knowledge in the upper levels is also a process of rote memorization and can be accessed with games and manipulative resources.

I remember thinking about ways to get “creative” with numbers. The fact is that numbers need to be memorized and used. Games are a good way to create number sense in children. The games don’t always have to be “educational” in the sense of producing facts or answers. This is because rather than just being able to

The fact is that numbers are something the children will use on a daily basis throughout their lives. Solving number problems though games and team-building activities gives children access to these facts. Creating problems that relate to the real world whenever possible helps in this process.

through games and skills tasks.

city review

AN EVENING OF BLISS AND ZEN SOME…

I

By Farid Nouisser

t was my wife’s birthday a couple of weeks ago and what better way to say I love you to an awesome woman on her special day, then by spending an evening away at a world class hotel without having to leave the comfort zone of your own city. That’s just what we did thanks to the amazing team at the Rotana, Al Ain Hotel and Resort. After making sure the kids were in good hands with the babysitter and had an ample supply of junk food and movies to keep them busy for the evening, we packed the car and set out on our 15 minute journey to the Rotana.

The pampering began in the lobby of the hotel as we were checked in hassle free and then whisked to our luxuriously appointed room in the new Falaj extension. The room was spectacular to say the least and the guest of honour even had a scrumptious birthday cake waiting on the table to remind us that this evening was all about the birthday girl. After exploring our state of the art nest equipped with all the latest in comfort and technology, we made our way past the fantastic courtyard pool – a sight to behold that is a story in and of itself – to our dining destination at the infamous Trader Vics. Warm greetings were first on the menu, and soon we were sitting at a specially selected table strewn with decorative birthday glitter and nestled in a very cozy corner of the restaurant. The service was impeccable and the courses kept coming until we reached complete and utter satiation. I was about to order a crane to lift me from my seat when yet another birthday cake arrived with an entourage of staff singing their hearts out! To cap things off we were paid a special visit by the G.M., Ayman Gharib, who took the time to ensure that our experience was all we had hoped it would be and to naturally extend his best wishes to Kaarin on her special day. Back in the room we sank into a heavenly bed, watched a big screen movie and occasionally snacked on the delicious birthday cheese cake that kept calling out to me before falling into a deep and peaceful slumber… 30

The Source

So that was our evening of bliss and now after a bountiful breakfast buffet – like we really needed any more food – it was time for the Zen some part of our experience. It was originally intended to be a couple’s event but being a gentleman, I opted to forfeit my portion of the spa treatment and give my wife a total pampering while I caught up with some writing poolside. If you have not yet had the great fortune of visiting the latest and greatest spa in Al Ain, then be sure to put it on your holiday list of things to do as it is a must experience event! From the moment you walk through the doors the scent alone gives you a feeling of divinity. The experienced and knowledgeable staff immediately sprang into action with a warm welcome that led to a consultation and assessment for her massage and facial treatments to follow. During the next two hours Kaarin experienced spa bliss in the form of an aroma therapy full body and scalp massage followed by a rejuvenating facial. Kaarin’s spa experience wound down in a candle lit relaxation room where she sipped on a refreshing glass of lemon water before getting dressed and joining me back in the real world. As is often the case with all too many heavenly escapes, our stay at the Rotana Al Ain ended far too soon. As we made the short trek back home we promised ourselves to do this more often and I couldn’t wait to tell our readers about a magnificent mini holiday spent right in our backyard!

WINGS AND WATER Our columnist finds herself at the helm of an A380 and below deck on the Royal Navy’s most famous warship By Marianne Makdisi

“J

ust small corrections,” my instructor, who also happened to be my husband, told me as I attempted to keep the plane on the glide path. I watched the landing lights, stretched out ahead of me at Dubai International Airport, and nudged the controls. Half red lights and half white is the ideal.

Nose up. Left a bit. Then the runway started rushing up towards me. Those small corrections rapidly turned into clumsy lurches and I plunged the aircraft into the ground, where it bumped along noiselessly, magically passing through highly pixelated objects. My second attempt is much the same, and I have to concede that, in the unlikely event that the entire crew of an A380 is struck down by a dodgy prawn, I’m not your hero. I found myself in an A380 simulator during the summer, at the new £4m Emirates Aviation Experience in East London. We’d taken the underground to North Greenwich, intending to ride the Emirates 32

Air Line cable car, which swings across London’s River Thames with spectacular views, when we noticed a small building housing the newly opened aviation experience. Inside the high-tech attraction, which serves as a testament to the achievements of commercial air travel, your eye is immediately drawn to an immense video wall displaying an A380 aircraft turnaround with infographic facts. In ‘fast-forward’ mode, the screen shows a parked aircraft being serviced by various trucks and personnel. Sixty people in total turn the plane around, in just 105 minutes. You can then have a go yourself, using an interactive game to find out how fast you are at getting a plane ready for take-off. We walked around a real-size replica of the A380’s nose and a half scale model of a Rolls Royce Trent 800 engine made from 165,000 Lego bricks, and I really enjoyed the panoramic video following a suitcase’s journey from check-in to the plane’s hold. You stand inside a small surround cinema and watch a piece of luggage

moving along a system of rollercoaster-like conveyor belts. If you’ve ever wondered what happens to your case, this is a fascinating glimpse of the amazingly intricate behind-the-scenes structure that transports checked-bags to the aircraft. It was upstairs that we had the most fun, however. The flight simulators (two Airbus A380s and two Boeing B777s) might be nothing like what pilots actually train in (just the stick, rudder and thrust work), but they allow you to take-off, manoeuvre the aircraft and attempt to land. The high-definition screen and advanced graphics simulate a flight starting or ending at London Heathrow or Dubai, with weather conditions of your choosing. You could opt for drizzly rain coming into LHR, buttery sunshine in Dubai, or a starry night sky if you wanted to command a night flight. After a while, I decided to sit back and watch my husband, an A380 pilot, do what he’s good at, before leaving the aviation experience to climb onboard a cable car and cross the Thames at a vertigoinducing altitude. The simulator costs £45 for a 30-minute session. ALL ABOARD While in the south of England, another great day out for all the family is the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, which is a 1.5-hour train ride from London’s Waterloo station. Featuring the brand new Mary Rose Museum and the world famous ships HMS Victory and HMS Warrior, the dockyard encompasses 800 years of history and offers plenty to see and do. Portsmouth is still the home of the UK’s modern Royal Navy and you can take a 45-minute harbour tour, with unrivalled views of Britain’s modern frigates, destroyers and helicopter carriers, as well as historic buildings, sights and ships. As we boarded HMS Victory, Lord Nelson’s flagship at the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, I had no idea that such a treat was in store. Clambering through its numerous decks, where more than 800 men lived, worked and fought, is a rousing experience and a unique glimpse of what life at sea was like. While on the Royal Navy’s most famous warship, you can see the Great Cabin, where the Battle of Trafalgar was planned, and the spot where Nelson died. You won’t hear cannon fire though – unless you mistake the dull thuds of visitors’ heads hitting the low overhead beams for distant bombardment.

review Far from the Tree by Jennifer Egan is a landmark, revolutionary book. It frames an area of inquiry -difference between parents and children–that many of us have experienced in our own lives without ever considering it as a phenomenon. Andrew Solomon plumbs his topic thoroughly, humanely, and in a compulsively readable style that makes the book as entertaining as it is illuminating.

Book Review Wave, is an evocative wordless book, where the internationally acclaimed artist Suzy Lee tells the story of a little girl's day at the beach. Stunning in their simplicity, Lee's illustrations, in just two shades of watercolor, create a vibrant story full of joy and laughter. The illustrations are simple, with only shades of black, white, gray and blue, featuring blunt charcoal drawings that capture the youth and innocence of the little girl. It's a great example of a wordless book where all pictures help in narrating the story to the reader.

The wise old man

A wealthy man requested an old scholar to wean his son away from his bad habits. The scholar took the youth for a stroll through a garden. Stopping suddenly he asked the boy to pull out a tiny plant growing there. The youth held the plant between his thumb and forefinger and pulled it out. The old man then asked him to pull out a slightly bigger plant. The youth pulled hard and the plant came out along with its roots. “Now pull out that one,” said the old man pointing to a bush. The boy had to use all his strength to pull it out. “Now take this one out,” said the old man, indicating a guava tree. The youth grasped the trunk and tried to pull it out. But it would not budge. “It’s impossible,” said the boy, panting with the effort. “So it is with bad habits,” said the sage. “Don’t wait for Bad Habits to grow on you, drop them while you have control over them as they will start controlling you”, said the old wise man.
