“If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.” (Khalil Gibran) It might only be May but the ever ascending thermometer clearly indicates that summer has indeed arrived in our part of the world. And the sweltering heat ushers in the much anticipated and well deserved repose for the many educators of Al Ain. I dedicate this note to you and the unwavering perseverance with which you have managed, for yet another year, to enlighten the minds and spirits of our most prized resource; the youths of Al Ain! My wife is a teacher but in her heart she will always remain a student and it is with this humility and passion that she succeeds in making a difference every day she steps into the classroom. I applaud your efforts and recognize the indifference often suffered at the hands of those refusing to appreciate the substance of your labour. Francis Bacon once said, “Knowledge is power, and education is the fundamental precondition for political development, democracy and social justice.” Four centuries later, this powerful statement still holds true and the vehicles delivering this power effectively are an absolute necessity to our continuance and evolution. In this issue of The Source, we are featuring a particular vehicle that has come to our city fortified with every requisite necessary to inspire this power. If you are a parent and hold the future of your children in our ever increasing competitive world in the highest regard, then you will be interested in finding out more about Brighton College and its unrivalled philosophy. Children are the extensions of all of our hopes and dreams and our purpose as parents should be assisting them in the fulfillment of their own dreams. Life is a journey filled with learning and to all that embark on this voyage, I tip my hat; God bless you and thank you for a job well done!

This may not be exactly the advice you were looking for, but no single thing, even a good thing like green tea, can bring our life into balance and so no one thing will solve your weight loss goal.

Thanks for asking such a great question. Green tea contains molecules known as polyphenols which are being studied for protective and therapeutic use of cancers. Green tea also contains caffeine which is a known appetite suppressant. The appetite suppressant effect is the link between green tea and weight loss. Weight loss should always be thought of in context of being healthy. Being healthy has many parts: our body, our psyche and our soul. Our body is nourished by getting plenty of water, sleep, activity, and fresh healthy food in the proper amounts; our mind is nourished by good rest and good work in proper amounts; and our soul
"Hi, am 27 years old and I have a problem with my skin; I'm always itchy. At first, I thought it was an allergy. I have tried using allergy tube creams as well as tablets, but it only stops for awhile and comes back. I have endured this for 4 months now. What could be the problem with my skin? I am afraid; please help me. Thank you" Dear Reader, Thanks for the question. Unfortunately, this question cannot be properly answered without consultation with a doctor who can examine your rash and take good history from you. My advice is to seek a doctor, who is trustworthy and continue seeing them until the problem is resolved, or refer to another doctor if you lose trust in the initial one. The doctor is always on call at The Source and asking the right questions can lead to better health. Dr. Gabriel comes to us from Oasis Hospital, where he practices family medicine. y TIPS TO GO GREEN k c a W d Worl “Amazon is offering its warehouse employees up to $5,000 to quit their jobs, even as the company is in the process of adding workers and locations. The ‘Pay to Quit’ program, which was announced by CEO Jeff Bezos in his letter to shareholders late Thursday, is an effort to make sure that the Internet retailer’s employees really want to be there. ‘The goal is to encourage folks to take a moment and think about what they really want,’ he wrote in the letter. ‘In the long-run, an employee staying somewhere they don’t want to be isn’t healthy for the employee or the company.” Bezos said the offer is made under the headline ‘Please Don’t Take This Offer.’ Amazonwill offer to pay its associates to quit once a year.
Tips to keep the Air Clean. Rather than use synthetic air fresheners to mask an unpleasant odour, find the source of the odour, and clean it up. Then open the windows for fresh air, or use flowers or potpourri to add a more natural scent to your room. If necessary, install air filters and purifiers and other air cleaning devices.

WORLD-LEADING SCHOOL LAUNCHES
‘all-rounder’ scholarships Brighton College bids to transform Al Ain education By JJ Green

righton College is widely regarded as the most successful coeducational school in the UK and achieved the country’s highest ever examination results last summer. So when sister school Brighton College Al Ain opened its doors last September, parents might have been forgiven for thinking that the cost of such an education was beyond their financial means. Not so, says Head Master Alun Yorath, as he welcomes The Source to the iconic Brighton College campus. ‘Our long-term ambition is to build the finest school in the Middle East,’ beams the Head Master, as our tour of the College begins at a new athletics track that was recently used by Olympic triathletes the Brownlee brothers as their base camp. ‘Yes, facilities have an important role to play, but it is the ambitions we have for our pupils that will get us there.’ It is with this in mind that Brighton College recently launched an ‘all-rounder’

scholarship programme for children who can demonstrate good all-round ability in academic studies and make a contribution to the extra-curricular life of the school. With up to 80 scholarship places still available and a 25% remission on fees, the ‘all-rounder’ scheme has caught the imagination of expatriate parents across the city who might have otherwise struggled to meet the expense of funding a world class education.

‘The Brighton scholarships have opened up the Al Ain schools market,’ commented one British parent whose daughter recently

education It is immediately evident that pupils at Brighton College are pushed to work their hardest and over-achieve whilst taking genuine delight in their learning. ‘We do our best to combine creativity and rigour in the classroom,’ explains Mr. Yorath. ‘This fosters ambitious and driven boys and girls who aim high, never say die and have an impressive resilience. We are very proud of our pupils.’ He stresses: ‘Brighton College aims to challenge and push our pupils to the edge of their comfort zones in an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment. We believe that it is criminal to allow pupils to coast along comfortably when there is so much untapped potential within every child.’

UAE Symphony Orchestra in October and boasts acoustics that are unrivalled in the city. He seems keen to make the point that a Brighton education is not restricted to the classroom. ‘Success at Brighton is not measured by examination results alone, as first rate grades are expected rather than hoped for,’ explains the Head Master. He continues: ‘Success and worth outside of the classroom are equally important to us, be it in sports, art, charitable activities, music or drama. This builds more wellrounded pupils who are not only intelligent in the classroom, but are also quick to excel elsewhere.’ As our tour of Brighton College continues, we visit a number of classrooms to see the pupils in action. It is an illuminating experience. In a Computing Lab bedecked with the latest Apple technology, a group of nine year olds are busily designing their own websites, whilst a Year 9 English class debates the merits of Jane Austen, Ray Bradbury and Charles Dickens.
The results are incredibly convincing. Sister school Brighton College Abu Dhabi made the headlines last September, as a recordbreaking 100% of pupils attained A* grades – in every single module – in the first set of GCSE results last year. Meanwhile, Brighton College UK continues to sweep the board back in Britain, winning a string of awards including The Sunday Times ‘School of the Year’, ‘UK School of the Year’ and ‘Headmaster of the Year’, as judges lauded the “extraordinary academic success” of the school. As Head Master Mr. Yorath bids us farewell, he is keen to highlight what drives the Brighton approach to education. ‘Awards are very flattering, but our focus is entirely on preparing our pupils to compete on a global stage, confident in their talents and with an unbreakable resilience that will stand them in good stead regardless of the obstacles and challenges they face.’ Parents across the city will be watching carefully to see what happens next. If you would like more information or to arrange a tour of the college, please contact the admissions team at admissions@brightoncollegealain.ae or telephone 03-7133 999

y dad wasn’t a farmer, though he very much wanted to be. He housed us on one acre of garden and two of farm and populated his lands with the Guinness World Record’s smallest herd of cows. Being the conscientious cocky that he was, he installed an electric fence to discourage the unrulier elements of the Gang of Three from acting on dreams of greener pastures. One chilly morn, I trudged bleary-eyed and groggy through the gap in the hedge to deliver the beasts their daily hay. As I dumped the lucerne over the fence, I suffered a barbaric blow to the base of my spine. Screaming in agony, I whipped around to curse my elder brother for assaulting me. I might have added “again.” Not sure. To my dismay, the space that should have accommodated his demonic form was bare. Had he finally been raptured downwards by a vengeful god for his beastly misdeeds, as I had so often wished? Eventually, I realized that I had touched the
12

Poison Peddlers electric fence. The cows, themselves having suffered the torment of the wire many times, chomped away contentedly without so much as a moo in sympathy. Did I detect, rather, a hint of sardonic amusement in those sinkhole eyes? The point is, things weren’t what they’d seemed. Which brings me, logically, to cycling. It is the pin-up boy of environmentally-friendly pursuits. But it turns out that professional cycling is the most polluting of all sports. The Tour de France attracts 12 to 15 million spectators, and it’s these enviro-bandits who are the problem. We see them waving flags and bouncing on their toes in excitement as the peloton shwooshes past in a millisecond blur of rainbow lycra and body odor. Then, with the world’s shortest show done and dusted, they squeeze into ageing Renaults and Peugeots and, dragging houses behind them, wallow about the Pyrenees in low gear, belching poisonous clouds of CO2 over the mountain meadows, laying waste to wildflowers, smothering eagles on the wing. To be sure, when a spectator plants his foot in the Alps, a dugong goes belly-up in Australia. Formula One, on the other hand, is leading the environmental charge from the front. This year the sport introduced rules that
demand a 33 percent fuel saving over last. If Toyota announced a new Camry that used 33 percent less fuel than the last one, they’d be branded environmental heroes. The trick is that clever engineers have matched a small petrol-burning engine to two energy recovery systems to create a hybrid system that is relevant to the motoring industry. And it’s reliable. Only two retirements this season can be attributed to problems with the power units. The new formula’s efficiency is testimony to the value of competition as a driver of innovation. It’s just this kind of motivation that will propel us over the line, if anything will. Hand the present to the engineers and they’ll forge the future out on the track. As yet, none of the Japanese manufacturers are involved, although Nissan has a tie-in with Renault who supply power units to four teams. However, Honda will join the grid in 2015, and then the race will be well and truly on to be first into the mass market with this cutting-edge tech. And that’s a good thing, because the sooner cycling fans can ditch their eaglesmothering wildflower-murderers for F1derived enviro-wagons the better. We’ll all breathe a little easier, and perhaps, then, cycling will become what it now only seems to be.

Your nails are a canvass
T By Komal R. Lakhani
he colour and condition of a person’s nails has long been an indication of social status. In ancient Egypt, a darker colour like deep red was seen on the hands of queens, whereas, the lowest of social classes settled with lighter pastels. Today, beautiful nails are for everyone and manicure passion and artistic nail expression continues to grow. We may think of nail art as a modern innovation but in fact, it was initiated in the 13th century by the Inca civilization, who painted images of eagles on their fingertips – strikingly familiar to today’s trends. Fast forwarding into the 20th century, we encounter the “moon manicure” which originated in France and was all the rage in the 1920’s. This version of nail art involved painting the middle of the nail while leaving the moon (and sometimes the tip as well) unpainted. You can guess how the style French manicure came to be.
In the 1930s, nail art became popular in England, with ladies opting for scenic landscapes on their mini canvases. The concept of nail ornament appliqués began taking shape but did not materialize until the millennium. New nail technology arrived in the 1950s with the advent of hair spray which was used to dry polish. Split nails were repaired with filter paper and glue and acrylic nails were created. The materials used for these false nails were actually invented to fill dental cavities. They became easier to apply and more practical in the 1970s. My sister once accidently scratched my brother’s chin with her acrylic/gel nail; his chin didn’t stop bleeding for hours. Men, you have been warned! The explosion of Japanese and Korean 3D nail art hit the scene in early 2000. I was in school then and to be honest, I was not a fan. They were everywhere, and their bulky designs made them hard to miss! Along with rock size crystals, nail piercing was often included with the package, crowding the limited real estate available on one tiny nail. This was a bit over the top for me! Although creative, simple and clean designs are dominant today, everything from the Burj Khalifa to a newspaper can be imprinted on your nails. Nail art has become integrated into the world of fashion and accessorizes any look. One exciting new trend in the world of nail art is the use of dried flowers, perfect for the spring-summer season. I recently played around with Ciaté London’s, Flower
Manicure set and I must say; it’s pretty cool. The set comes with dried flowers and tweezers, for precision placement, a buffer to flatten any bulges, a Mini Paint Pot and a clear top coat. So you don’t have to go running around looking for anything; I hate when that happens. Why not express your passion with nail art the next time you’re ready for a fresh manicure and be sure to maintain a balanced diet and limit the use of polish remover to keep your nails healthy. Beauty Solutions is giving our readers a chance to win Ciate London’s flower manicure kits. To know more see the inbox page.
stuff for men
HIDING
The Man Gut!
Do men have body image issues? For me this is obviously true when it comes to a man with a gut or spare tire. There are basically three ways of hiding the Man Gut. 1. Suck in your stomach and hold your breath. This one only works short term for photo opportunities and in front of the mirror when we try to remind ourselves of how we used to look. This one I will not discus in further detail. 2. Change the clothes you wear. This can have a huge effect on how you look. 3. Wear something like a male corset underneath your clothes. Hiding the Man Gut through Clothing A large stomach or belly can be very unattractive to women. If you are large around the middle, follow these men’s fashion tips on how to dress for your body appearance and discover a new slimmer looking you. 1. Putting on loose clothes may make your body appear bigger, and clothes that are too tight as well as clingy, will accentuate the bear in you. The key is to take an approach that is in between the two and discovering pieces that skim your body instead of clinging to it. 2. Layering is another great way of making you look slimmer (works only if you are not too bulky). Combine this with choosing similar dark colours for an even more enhanced slimming effect. You can wear a dark coloured shirt or top with trousers and wear a different coloured blazer or jacket over it. You combine the layering with the dark similar colours. 16
The Source
3. Only wear Long-sleeved shirts. These shirts create a more proportioned look for your body. Sleeveless or shortsleeved shirts draw more attention to your gut. 4. Stripes can have a big effect. Horizontal stripes are an absolute no go! Vertical stripes (although not too wide) do help because they will stretch out the look of your body. Diagonal lines will certainly draw attention to your belly like the horizontal ones because of the widening impact. A great tip is the use of Pinstripe shirts as they can be more slimming. Team these with dark coloured trousers. 5. 2. Small prints (not too small) that are spaced wide apart will also make you appear slimmer. 6. 3. Vests are another great method of concealing your man gut. Can’t Suck It In Guys? Get The Man Girdle There are great products available to streamline your posture known as “Man Girdles” or “Middles”. They make waists appear trimmer, enhance posture and help males get into the latest slimmer-fitting suits. The summer is here and since many of you will be lugging that beloved bought and paid for belly to the beach, I should point out one last helpful hint that will make you look much slimmer even when sporting nothing more than your favourite swim trunks; always be sure to head to the pool or beach in the company of male friends sporting a much bigger belly than yours – this will always insure that you feel good about yourself! Oh, last but certainly not least, when all else fails, try a DIET and WORKING OUT!

main reason is lack of sun exposure due to extended time spent doing indoor work; clothing habits and not getting products that are supplemented with vitamin D. Dark skinned people need more sun exposure because of the pigment melanin, which reduces the skin’s ability to make vitamin D from sunshine. Some studies show that older adults with darker skin are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency. Infants that are on breast milk without any additional vitamins could also be at risk.

Most natural sources of vitamin D are from: fish and fish oils, egg yolks, cheese, fortified milk and beef liver. If you can, including these in your diet will be of benefit to you. Strict vegetarians often lack vitamin D.

he most abundant resource available in the Middle East is sunshine. Despite this, there is a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency. Most of the population is affected, especially women. Worldwide, one billion people live with vitamin D deficiency.
Some people cannot absorb vitamin D from their digestive system. Certain medical problems such as coeliac disease and Crohn’s disease prevent this. Being overweight also adds to the problem. Vitamin D is extracted from the blood by fat cells, changing the way vitamin D is released into circulation. Being on certain medications such as steroids, anti-seizure, anti-cholesterol and heart medications like digoxin, affect vitamin D absorption and you should check with your doctor about supplements.
Vitamin D, also called the sunshine vitamin, is a fat soluble vitamin. This means that it is stored in the body fat. When the skin is exposed to sunlight, it produces vitamin D. This is how 90% of the vitamin D in our body comes to us. The kidneys convert this into an active form of vitamin D that our body can use. Vitamin D plays many important roles. Vitamin D is critical for strong bones, from infancy into old age. It helps the body absorb calcium from food. In older adults, a daily dose of vitamin D and calcium helps to prevent fractures and brittle bones. Children need this vitamin to build strong bones and prevent rickets, a cause of bowed legs, knock knees, and weak bones. Vitamin D also helps boost our immunity and prevents conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and multiple sclerosis.

Born and educated in Dubai, Tala studied music at Royal Holloway, University of London and is the sole Emirate female graduate of this esteemed institution.
What inspired you teach Music? I left Dubai on a UK scholarship that was granted by the Government of Dubai and presented by H.H. Sheikh Maktoum. When I met him, I promised to return and contribute this knowledge to my country. The other inspiration was my daughter, who was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome when she was two years old. Seeing her 22

benefit from music therapy was a major motivating force. You have had quite a career in the corporate world; did this help you in establishing your own business? Finding a job as a music teacher was next to impossible upon my return. At that time very few schools taught music and the only options were to teach privately. Struggling, I resorted to reinventing myself via a degree in business. I was hired straight out of university by Barclays and worked there for two years followed by seven years with the chocolate company, Mars. I truly believe things happen for a reason and thanks to my corporate career; I acquired the necessary experience to set up and successfully run a business that catered to my passion. The CMA would not be here today without these valuable prior business experiences!
What does the future hold for CMA? What I hope for and what I see are two very different things. I hope that Dubai will embrace music not just in local schools but in the community as well by funding more programs. What I see is that the importance of music is still not recognised or supported adequately by way of funding. Changes need to be

made at a policy level to support performing arts; especially in the field of music to encourage the type of development we see in Abu Dhabi.
the necessary awareness required to arrive at solutions for these types of issues. Today, our society is becoming very accepting and no longer burying their problems.
What are your views on the music industry in the UAE?
Dubai and Abu Dhabi are raising awareness about children with special needs. April was World Autism awareness month and on April 2nd, Burj Al Arab was highlighted with the colours and symbols of autism. Such activates are extremely helpful. Movies like Amal Al-Agroobi’s “The Brain That Sings” and From A to B, a new Emirati film directed by Ali F. Mostafa, are fantastic examples of the social development we are experiencing.
I believe that attitudes towards music are divided in our country. For example, in Abu Dhabi it is not necessarily accepted by the people but heavily endorsed by the government. Although Dubai has a popular music scene with DJ’s spinning at every club and event, this is not the true essence of music! All major musical programs and orchestra performances are held in Abu Dhabi and even my daughter must resort to participating in Orchestra performances in Abu Dhabi. One of your children suffers from Asperger’s which you mention on your Twitter profile; why is that so? When my daughter was first diagnosed I was advised to keep my personal life private but I am an advocate of creating
How do you manage a successful career and a family? Tala starts off with a laugh “I am very very tired (she chuckles); I feel the need to do this and keep pushing with force. My family and friends all live in Dubai and are very supportive of my career and personal life. I couldn’t have done it without them and God knows that I struggle on occasion to keep the balance.
Which is your favourite instrument? My favourite instrument is the Cello but I don’t play it. I play the flute, guitar and piano. I like to perform in orchestras but haven’t had the time over the past few years. To play in an orchestra requires a great deal of practice and most of my time is spent teaching. Right now my daughter is the star performer in the family. What advice do you have for today’s youth? Don’t give up no matter what! You will face closed doors and difficulties but always follow your heart and I repeat; never give up!

Everyone is tempted to stay up all night a couple of times before an exam, trying to cram that knowledge into our brains, surviving on coffee and chocolate bars. But is it really the best way to learn? We asked the Focal Point Career Guidance team to give us their tried and tested revision tips. 1. ENSURE THAT YOUR NOTES ARE COMPLETE If you missed classes or were just having a bad day and didn’t take notes, speak to teachers or friends and make sure you fill in those gaps. 2. IDENTIFY THE PLACE WHERE YOU WORK BEST For some people this is the library, for others it’s at home. Find your place and stick to it. 3. CUT DOWN ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND MESSENGER If you are one of those people who can’t ignore that little flashing light on your phone, turn it off while studying, leave it hidden somewhere or even delete Facebook from your phone altogether for a month. 4. EAT PROPERLY, SLEEP WELL & EXERCISE Gorging on ‘brain foods’ like fish in the last two weeks before your exam won’t help, but you can make sure your blood sugar level stays constant by avoiding high sugar foods – it’s the peak and ensuing sleepy trough of sugary snacks that makes it difficult to concentrate. 5. MAKE A REALISTIC TIMETABLE AND TAKE BREAKS. Plan to finish your revision a week before the exam. Then you can either 24

Effective Revision By Fiona Duerden
take days off or have more time for topics you find difficult. Never work for more than 45 minutes without a break. 6. DON’T DO ALL YOUR STUDYING ON A SUBJECT IN ONE BLOCK. A recent study by Professor Dunlovsky at the Kent State University showed that ‘distributive practice’ – breaking up your study over a longer period of time – is a more effective way of remembering. 7. KNOW WHAT WORKS FOR YOU Each individual has a different approach to learning. Some learn better in silence, some find it easier to revise with music on and
others like to study in groups. Learn which strategy works for you. 8. KEEP ON TESTING YOURSELF Prof Dunlovsky also highlighted testing and re-testing as the most effective method of revision. The key message is to learn things more than once – practice retrieving material from your memory and then building on what you know. • Recreate mock exam conditions: download past papers from exam board websites and complete them in a quiet room within the allocated time. Ask a friend to do the same paper and then swap your papers to mark them. It may be a bit intimidating but you really will improve. • Write notes on flashcards and keep them in different boxes – one for things you don’t know yet, one for things you almost know and one for things you definitely know. Keep testing yourself and the cards will gradually move across the boxes. 9. KNOW YOUR LEARNING STYLE! Find out whether you are a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learner and use this to help you revise. If you are not sure which you are, you can download a quick quiz from www. facebook.com/focalpointcareerguidance. Visual learners: use colour codes, organise information into mind maps, tables, charts or diagrams and stick them on your wall. Auditory learners: put information into your own words and record it or repeat it out loud and use rhymes and songs. Try studying in groups where you can discuss information. Kinaesthetic learners: study in shorter blocks, make sure you are comfortable, and be free to walk or move while you work. Use flash cards, memory games, and gestures to recall information. Write and we-write information; reorganise it into tables, timelines or flowcharts. 10. LASTLY – DO YOUR BEST. Don’t feel pressure to be the best. One bad exam does not define who you are!
SONY XPERIA Z2:
Price: AED 2649 (prices may vary). Availability: in Major electronics store and online. The latest Quad-core processor in this Android phone claims to offer an unbeatably fast and smooth user experience, all while offering outstanding battery life and a 5.2” Full HD screen that features the world’s first Live Colour LED display. WHAT WE LOVE The camera is 20.7 mp with a sensor that’s 30% larger than the standard Smartphone. This puts it on par with compact digital cameras. The results are much crisper images and the ability to record in 4K video, which is shaper than full HD. What sets Xperia Z2 apart from other smartphones is that you can take it swimming in freshwater for up to 30 minutes. You can even dive up to 1.5 metres with it but make sure you firmly close the various slots. Some people find the design less edgy compared to the clean cuts of Apple and Samsung, but these are not water proof. The phone also comes with stereo speakers and noise cancelling technology. WHAT DOES SONY NEED TO DO TO IMPRESS? Not a lot. The screen needs some fixes and features. Make sure you check it out in-store before making a purchase, because some of you won’t like the larger build. For a good all-round experience, the Xperia Z2 excels.
OCULUS RIFT

The headset displays a fully immersive 3D experience that makes you feel like you are actually in the game. What was once the stuff of Hollywood fantasy is now reality. A startup called Oculus VR is creating personal virtual-reality goggles called the Oculus Rift. Oculus VR put the product on Kickstarter.com about a year and a half ago and a month ago, turned it’s a pipe dream into a $2 billion acquisition offer from Facebook. The makers of Oculus VR say they have an eye on the 1.2 billion people who use Facebook every month, with dreams of dropping them into a new, virtual world. This technology could also revolutionize the way people interact with others online.
SAMSUNG WATCHON APP

What is Samsung WatchON? We are loving this app! Sweet Tooth
I By K.Radhakishan
n the last issue we looked at some of the more traditional Arabic dishes. After the savoury main course is served up, can sweet bites be far behind? My love for desserts is truly pampered by the Arabic cuisine’s unique and delicious creations.
When we discuss Arabic sweets, Baklava usually to comes to mind first and is available throughout the country. But we dug a little further to bring you the fare cooked in Emirati kitchens. First up, we have Luqaimat which is a common Emirati dessert that mirrors the loqoumades that were presented as "honey tokens" to winners of the Olympics in Ancient Greece. In Arabic, the word refers to small bites. While they closely resemble doughnut holes, luqaimat batter is distinct in that it replaces the butter or shortening with yogurt. This gives the fritters a faint sour taste, with insides that are less fluffy than doughnuts, but more squidgy and ideal for sponging up the saffron and cardamom Baklava

sugar syrup they are typically doused in. These little balls of batter get deep fried in oil and are a staple during Ramadan. Al Khabees is considered one the most popular traditional Emirati dishes. Khabees, a type of Arabian crumble, has an Ottoman origin. Made from toasted flour, butter, rosewater, sugar, cardamom and saffron, it is commonly served as a dish for breakfast; especially during the days of Eid. Next on the list is Assidat (Aseeda) al-Boubar (Pumpkin Halvah). Like many traditional Emirati desserts, this luscious pumpkin porridge (in Arabic it's a halvah, or sweet food) straddles the line between sweet and savoury. It melds together date syrup, flour and melted butter, and is sprinkled with chopped hazelnuts. The dish thickens as it cools, so its best enjoyed when warm.
munched directly. They can be filled with cream then dipped in ground pistachios and served with a drizzle of syrup. Regular atayef are served drizzled with simple syrup. Atayef can also be made without the stuffing. Last on the list for today is Igali. It is the Arabian version of sponge cake, which is rich with eggs, saffron, dates, cardamom, walnuts and sesame seeds. It is accompanied by a cup of sweet black or Arabic tea. If you are as hungry as I am after writing this, head out today and spoil yourself a little with these sweet temptations.
Atayef (kataif ) are thin and lacy stuffed Arabic pancakes. They are cooked only on one side leaving the other covered with velvety bubbles which allow the flavours of the filling to permeate through. There are two types of atayef: regular and mini atayef (also known as atayef asafiri). The regular ones are usually stuffed with a cheese or nut filling, then sealed and baked, fried or Halva

I entered the room to the rhythmic beat of music and my focus was immediately tuned to the sound of a repetitious voice counting in what seemed to be a most peculiar manner; 1-2-3 & 5-6-7. For those of you who may not have guessed, these numbers correspond to the dance steps of Salsa; a type of Latin American dance music incorporating elements of jazz and rock, sure to get even the lamest of us up and grooving. This week I set out with the girls to experience something new in the city of Al Ain. Our destination: Paco’s at The Hilton. Our goal: to learn salsa! The instructors were Dj Udia from Somalia, who has been teaching salsa for more than a decade and our very own Al Ain born, Layan Al Tahari. The night started with an introduction to basic salsa. After the group had mastered that, more steps were introduced along with some fun hip movements that added a real flare to the dance. From there on, there was no looking back. A few steps and turns later and we were ready to partner up and dance like the pros. Salsa is a dance form where men take the lead and women follow. Luckily, my first partner was Dj Udia and following him was a breeze. I wouldn’t say that about all my partners (everybody had to switch), but then again that’s the reason we were there; to learn and practice. The instructors monitored everyone’s performance and danced with all of us making sure no one was left out. After many useful tips and fun discussions about different types of salsa, our class came to an end. The evening was filled with laughter, conversation and obviously dancing! If you want to learn the basics of salsa for FREE, head to Paco’s every alternate Sunday. The next class is on May 25th. For more information email laila_jadallah77@hotmail.com or check out the Facebook group called Salsa On Sundays-S.O.S.

Superstar Rajnikanth joins Twitter Club Apparel Connect Members’ event was held last week at the Dune store located in Bawadi Mall. The event saw a big turnout of loyal Dune customers.
Jay Z ‘attacked’ by Beyonce’s sister: The alleged attack was captured by surveillance from the elevator in the Standard Hotel in New York. In the released video it appears that Solange Knowles is kicking and lashing out at her brother-in-law as her older sister watches on, Solange can also be seen being restrained by a body guard, as Jay Z attempts to hold onto her foot to stop her from lashing out. The body guard then appears to hit the emergency lift button when they arrive at the twelfth floor.
Ahead of the release of his much-talked about film Kochadaiiyaan, superstar Rajinikanth has joined Twitter to make his presence felt in the digital world. He says he's looking forward to catching up on the "best Rajini one-liners". His first tweet was “Salutation to the Lord. Vanakkam anaivarukkum!! A big thank you to all my fans. Excited on this digital journey” along with the link to an introduction video. His Twitter handle is @SuperStarRajini.
According to TMZ, who obtained the footage, the three then exited the building. Beyoncé and Solange got into one vehicle, while Jay Z was escorted into another by security. None of the parties involved have commented on this yet.
Much Awaited Star Wars Saga begins! The seventh movie in the Star Wars saga has begun filming in Abu Dhabi this week. The secret location in the middle of the desert is being guarded by both police and army officers in a bid to keep the top secret scenes away from the press. According to The National newspaper, the set is almost completed and will include a salt lake, a large tower, a market area and a spacecraft. The newspaper also reported that two lorries carrying explosives had been seen on set which are believed to be used to create a crater blast for a scene that will include a spectacular crashing spacecraft that is shot down from the sky in dramatic fashion. Star Wars: Episode VII, which is set 30 years after the Return of the Jedi, is scheduled to be released in December 2015.
Bollywood’s first movie in Abu Dhabi Siddharth Anand's Bang Bang began shooting earlier this month in the UAE. The film is said to be the first Bollywood movie to be shot in Abu Dhabi (FYI: Al Ain has already been featured in a movie called Race starring Saif Ali Khan). A section of the Corniche Road and one side of the street leading up to Marina Mall and the Breakwater were closed off for a “highspeed chase” recently. Ambulances and police cars were stationed at one end of the road, while service vehicles for the film filled the entire car park across the mall; bringing traffic and onlookers to a halt. The Source

SHARJAH UNCOVERED Our latest travel column brings us closer to home–to Sharjah, an emirate of contrasts with some prized cultural assets and family attractions
A
fter moving to the UAE in 2008, I’ll admit it was a couple of years before I stepped foot in Sharjah. Back then, my only knowledge of the emirate was gleaned from the traffic reports on the radio and I couldn’t imagine tackling the congestion myself.
Now I know better. Sharjah, I’ve discovered, is a gold mine of things to do. The city’s varied attractions really are hidden gems, and we’ve visited the UAE’s third largest emirate with our children numerous times. Sharjah might not dazzle with glitz like its neighbour Dubai, but it more than makes up for this with its authenticity. There are cultural footprints all over the emirate, in the picturesque outdoor gardens, architectural spaces and nature reserves, and at the prominent festivals, such as the Sharjah Biennal art fair and the Sharjah International Book Fair, that draw worldwide attention. The restored central Arts and Heritage Areas are among the most fascinating neighbourhoods in the UAE, and preserved historical sites abound, from the Bait Al Naboodah museum, a fine example of a 32

traditional Emirati house, to the Al Eslah School museum, the first formal school in the emirate. Sharjah’s rich history is also evident in the numerous quality museums covering Islamic art and culture, archaeology, heritage, science, marine life and the civilization of Sharjah and the region. Among these is the Sharjah Art Museum, built in 1997, which is the largest art museum in the Gulf and houses both temporary exhibitions and permanent collections by renowned artists.
OUR TOP SPOTS This list is by no means exhaustive, but here are some of the attractions my family has discovered and enjoyed in Sharjah (do check the opening times of everything mentioned before setting out!): Al Mahatta Museum: Cultural landmarks aside, you might also be interested to learn that the UAE’s first airport was opened in Sharjah in1932, and used as a staging post for commercial flights en route from Britain to India. Built on the site of the airport, the Al Mahatta Museum provides a unique glimpse into what air travel was like in the 1930s – a highlight for my boys being the four fully restored propeller planes displayed in the hangar alongside the original refuelling tanker. Eye of the Emirates: For panoramic, birdseye views of both Sharjah and Dubai, take a

to delight. Arabia’s Wildlife Centre: Last but not least is this excellent facility at Sharjah Desert Park, showcasing animals, both large and small, found in the Arabian Peninsula. There’s also a children’s farm, where the kids can pet and feed the animals, and ride ponies and camels at the weekend. gallery, the Maraya Art Centre. Sharjah Discovery Centre: Packed with hands-on gadgets and educational exhibits, this interactive facility comprises seven colourful, themed areas, designed to teach children that science and technology are part of our daily lives. Youngsters can also learn to drive, become a TV star and climb a wall.
whirl on the Eye of the Emirates, a 60m-high Ferris wheel with 42 fully air-conditioned gondolas, open in the late afternoon and at night. This landmark observatory wheel is situated in Al Qasba, which offers car-free strolling opportunities and is particularly busy on Friday night and Saturday. Set along the banks of a canal linked by a twinkling bridge, there’s an upbeat mix of restaurants, cafes and family-friendly fun. You’ll also find a superb contemporary art
Sharjah Classic Car Museum: We love this museum – the iconic exhibits, from the 1915 Dodge straight out of a period drama to the 1969 Mercedes Pullman Limousine (belonging to the Ruler of Sharjah), old ambulance and collection of Penny Farthing bicycles, are truly impressive. In total, there are more than 100 vintage cars, manufactured between 1917 and the 1960s. A fun game to play with the kids is ‘find the petrol tank cap’ – hint, look behind the licence plate (who knew!).
Add to all this Sharjah’s lively traditional souks, modern shopping malls, popular corniche and sandy palm-lined beaches and it’s easy to see why it’s worth braving the traffic. Beyond the city, the central region combines lush green oases with gravel plains and rolling red sand dunes. To the east, where Sharjah owns three enclaves bordering the Gulf of Oman, the landscape changes to a spectacular rocky coastline backed by impressively high mountains and peppered with archaeological sites and forts. What are you waiting for? It’s all on our doorstep.
Sharjah Aquarium: Step into an ‘abandoned dhow' to get up-close and personal with marine-life from the UAE's west and east coasts. The clown fish, seahorses, moray eels, rays, reef sharks and jellyfish are sure The Source

A Cap Seller and the Monkeys
There was a cap seller in a city. He used to go from village to village to sell caps. His way lay through a forest. It was a very hot summer day. He got tired. To get some rest he sat under a shaded tree. Soon he fell asleep under the shadow of the tree. Many monkeys were living in that tree. When they saw the caps they climbed down the tree and each one of them put a cap on their head. Then they climbed up the tree again. The cap seller woke up after some time. He found that his caps were missing. By chance he looked up and saw the monkeys wearing his caps. He tried his best to get his caps back but all his efforts were in vain. Suddenly an idea struck his mind. He took off his own cap and threw it on the ground. The monkeys did the same as they are imitators. The cap seller collected all his caps and went away happily.
