denise campbell Landscape artist, Denise Campbell brings to life the soul of the Australian bush – that earthy, spiritual quality so vibrantly and uniquely Australian. In palettes from nature that range from soft pastels to unforgiving reds, her paintings depict the vast scale of the land and metaphorically express the openness and freedoms experienced in the Australian way of life. Since emerging as an artist in the 90’s Denise travelled through Australia extensively, both by land and air seeking her inspiration. The resultant works undeniably capture the harsh, unrelenting beauty of the Australian landscape and the isolation and resolve required by those who those who choose to live in these diverse environments. How do you create an artwork? After finding an inspiring landscape, I look closely at composition possibilities before deciding on the positioning of light within the image. I sketch the basic layout onto the canvas. Then deciding on the pallet which I will use to bring the image to life, I start with undercolours that will aid in lifting the light into the painting. Layering is a strong element of my process, particularly when working with acrylic, as is variation in methods of paint application to achieve a best result. My walks through the landscape are brought to life through my works on paper. Using a favoured handmade paper from France and Oilsticks, I feel that I am able to bring the vibrancy and intrigue of those walks to life. I find the process in the production of those pieces to be quite calming, mesmerising even, and I think that this shows in the work.

Brindabella country Oil on canvas 75x75cms $1750 @55

The area around the ACT/ NSW border for me represents sheep country and is always marked by the rolling hills and poplars. This area can be both very hot and very cold.

Glasshouse Mountains Oil on canvas 75x75cms $1750

Although this painting is not a

@55

of the landscape reminded me of

replica of Glasshouse Mountain, the mountain shapes jutting out them.

Guard of honour Oil on canvas 90x75cms $1950 @55

I love to follow tracks and lanes when I see them in the countryside. I remember screaming to a halt and taking this track off the main road, to explore with curiosity and see a place that I had never seen before.

Yellow waters Oil on canvas 90x75cms $2400

I love the quiet of the country and

@55

changing colours of the season,

seeing still waters reflecting the was a scene that I did not forget.

How green was my valley Oil on canvas 90x75cms $1950

This scene reminded me of the

@55

coast of NSW, which was close to

rolling green hills of the south my childhood home.

environment, whether small or large bodies, it gives life to those who seek it.

The Rugged Range Oil on canvas 100x120cms $3600 @55

This is nowhere in particular but a scene reminiscent of so many, seen as you move through the country. A rugged ridge of mountains giving or adding life with run-off to the rivers.

Kakadu Burning Oil on canvas 100x100cms $3000 @233

When I visited Kakadu it was the season for burning off the bush. There was always smoke and haze in the air.

Wilderness

A little like the Blue Mountains, which

times,

with beautiful skies of the late afternoon.

the artist

don talintyre I was born in Sydney and raised in the St George District with one older brother. After raising my own family of four children in the Sutherland Shire I lived in the Southern Highlands for several years and now live in Appin NSW.

On the walls

I began pencil drawing at 6 and discovered a love for creating my own artwork. Following schooling to Intermediate Certificate level I was apprenticed at age 15 to a leading signwriting firm. I have had a paint brush in my hand most days of my life ever since. As for recreational art, I began painting local scenes around Sydney in the 1970’s as my children grew older and time away from my business allowed. I worked in all mediums and all types of subject matter to broaden my skills and experiment with style. I attended short art courses, including in Millthorpe NSW where I acquired a real taste for landscape painting. However, real improvement did not occur until a friend showed me the Meldrum method of tonal realism and the indisputable value of working from life.

Saturation

Oil on canvas 76cm x 101cm $4500 @55 This image was captured on the cliff tops above King George Falls and is my Signature painting of The Kimberley’s. It appears on all of my promotions. The inspiration is the juxtaposition of hazy recession against the well defined foreground rock formation plus the naturally occurring colour contrast.

Impasse

An aerial viewpoint above the

the composition showing the river

Bungle Bungles. I was intrigued by system seeming to stop abruptly.

Genesis I - Australian Oil on canvas 76cm x 101cm $3900 @55

An aerial view above the Bungle Bungles. This is the first one I painted. I was Inspired by the shapes and colours and to me it indicated the enormous age of this continent and it’s similarity to beautiful Aboriginal paintings.

Genesis II - Australian Oil on canvas 101cm x 76cm $3900 @55

Again in the King George Falls area, an intimate look at part of the cliff at the Water line showing the effects of tidal changes over eons of time.

King George Falls Oil on canvas 101cm x 76cm $4500 @55

This time a water born view of this impressive Bluff system with it’s twin Falls. Although not in full flow the falls, bluffs and reflections presented an Irresistible challenge.

Serpentine

King George Bluffs Watercolour 36cm x 41cm $250 @55 An on site water colour impression study for “Saturation. I thought It worthy of a frame.

Formation

Oil on canvas 51cm x 41cm $750 @55 In the Bungle Bungles this scene to me was a great indication of the forces of nature carving out shapes in the landscape.
