The Oxygen.ie National Student Media Awards 2010 This year the National Student Media Awards celebrated its 10th Birthday. The awards recognise the work produced in student publications, websites, radio, television or film. The importance of these awards cannot be underestimated as they recognise the hard work and effort of Ireland's rising media stars.

The Smedia Awards are seen as the pinnacle of achievement for media students in Ireland. The event is the biggest night in the Irish student calendar. This year the Oxygen National Student Media Awards took place on Wednesday, the 21st of April in the Mansion House, Dawson St, Dublin 2. There was an excellent turnout this year with a full house of over 700 students, sponsors, celebrity guests and media luminaries present.

Television personalities Kathryn Thomas and Daithi O’Se, hosted the evening this year for the first time. Their interaction with the students allowed for a relaxing atmosphere on stage. They had both been involved with the awards on a presenting level but were delighted to step up to co hosting this year’s show.

The Smedias were promoted on campus in a number of ways to ensure the awards gained maximum exposure and entries. Students nationwide began submitting entries from February. Impressively, the total number of entries was over 1,400 this year, a jump of almost 50% on last years awards.

A list of all news coverage - radio, television, print and web based - and articles representative of mentions in the press and on the web are included in the report.

They are also fostering the country’s future media professionals and supporting the event which recognizes the students’ talents, and opens the doorway for them into a potential career. Following the trend from previous years the partners involved in the event were prestigious. They featured a combination of national newspapers, Irish broadcasting companies and other major organisations who are interested in supporting Irish students. Many of the companies involved have been involved now for a number of years. Below is a list of those who kindly sponsored a category in 2010.
