MISSION | Prepare our students for college and for life in a community defined by robust academics, inspiration, engagement, and care
Reflect on the Past; Inspire the Future
Many of you know Corbin Orgain ’96. If not, I’ll fill you in: she is an alumna who met her husband Frazer ’95 when they were students at Steward, and she is the mother of two current Spartans (and the aunt of two new alumni). She has been teaching sixth-grade math here for several years, and her classroom is one of my favorite places on campus (not just because she lets the kids work out problems on the desks with erasable markers!). The entire room is painted and decorated in blue and gold—the walls are gold, the curtains are blue with gold ties, and every item in the room is one or both of these colors. If you happen to see her, you’ll know it’s Corbin because she’s decked out in a variation of blue and gold every day. Corbin is Steward, and Steward is Corbin. Her spirit and pride inspire me; if I ever forget why we work so hard throughout the year, walking past her room or bumping into her along the colonnade reminds me that we’re here to serve kids and make their lives better. She is but one example of the excellent faculty and staff members who embody the Steward spirit.
Perhaps having a look at this magazine will be your personal encounter with the spirit and pride that make Steward so incredible. Our schoolwide theme this year was storytelling, and in these pages, you’ll find excerpts from the story of our year. Some of the 2017-18 highlights include the founding of our International Thespian Society and our first-ever college signing ceremonies for arts schools; our third state athletics championship in five years; our Newbery Medal-winning Bryan Innovation Lab Visiting Innovator; our entrepreneurship partnerships with The Martin Agency and
Capital One; our three Destination Imagination teams that won spots in global competition; and the school’s awards for sustainability, as one of the Top Workplaces in Richmond, and as a Virginia Living Family Favorite. It has truly been an amazing year!
The purpose of this magazine, of course, is to reflect on the year that has just closed and to be inspired for the year upcoming. If you have time for reflection in the waning days of summer, I hope you are using it to slow down, to enjoy your family and friends, and to find a quieter pace before things speed up when the school year begins. The real purpose of stories— though they take us places we have never been, to times we have never lived, with people we have never met—is to help us to see where we are
We are proud Spartans, we are spirited, we are learning and growing, and we are doing it all together.

Navigating our Future
Steward Strategic Plan to Launch this Fall
Throughout the 2017-18 school year, groups of faculty, staff, parents, students, grandparents, and trustees worked together to create a new Strategic Plan for the school.
Input for “The Steward School Compass 2022: Navigating our Future” came from strategy sessions, think tanks, and design thinking workshops during which participants considered Steward’s past, present, and future, as well as our greatest strengths and our opportunities for growth and evolution. Participants asked big questions, thought creatively, and considered ideas to propel our school into the next five years and beyond.
The Strategic Planning Committee ultimately identified five key areas of focus that will help advance Steward’s academic program as well as build and enhance relationships within both the Steward and greater Richmond communities.
The plan will be rolled out in fall 2018 with extensive communications and community events, as well as study groups that will research and start to put the concepts into action. More information will be available in the coming months.
Launch of Inaugural Student Newspaper
If you hear students talking about “Steward ink,” they’re not talking about tattoos! For the first time in several years, The Steward School has a studentled and student-produced campus newspaper, Steward ink. The initiative was conceptualized and headed by sophomore Sonali Sanjay, a 2016 Robson Scholarship winner.
The publication, which can be accessed at www.stewardink.org, contains student-written news and feature content ranging in topics from affordable fashion pieces to reviews of musical artists to political editorials. The students aim to publish new content on the website quarterly.
Congratulations to the following students who participated in the launch: Anya Bhargava, Tre Chalmers, Kennon Cummings, Courtlyn Dranoff, Libey Eynan, Hannah Frank, Thomas Halsey, Sydney Johnson, Aayush Lalwaney, Matt Lane, Allison Langenburg, Julia Monroe, Sachin Sanjay, Sonali Sanjay, Kendall Shamus, and Emory Sutton.

Steward Honored
by Richmond Times-Dispatch as Top Workplace
SPECIAL RECOGNITION WITH A “TRAINING” AWARD FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
For the past five years, the Richmond Times-Dispatch has ranked the Top Workplaces in the Richmond region. The Steward School has participated in the competition for the last three years, and has been recognized as a Top Workplace for all three of those years!
We were ranked in the mid-sized category, a high honor that places us among many respected organizations. This year, Steward was also granted a special award for our training programs, which recognizes our commitment to professional development for our faculty and staff.
“We are thrilled to be recognized as a Top Workplace,” Head of School Dan Frank said. “It is a great gift to come to work every day among smart and dedicated faculty and staff, all united in our common purpose to promote positive growth in the lives of our young people. This award exemplifies what can be accomplished with an incredible team and a strong mission.”
Top Workplaces are decided based upon employee responses to an anonymous survey that gathers responses on 24 organizational health factors that measure how well employees are working together toward a common cause.

CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS
CAPTURING A SATELLITE SIGNAL ON CAMERA
Have you been keeping up with our Classroom Happenings article series? We regularly publish articles online featuring innovative, cross-curricular academic projects on campus. Here are a few of our favorites from this year:
2017-18 VISITING INNOVATORS
NOVEMBER: MANYANG REATH KHER AND GER DUANY
What do you get when you combine mirrors, a satellite dish, laser lights, and a fog machine?
Led by Upper School science teacher Laura Akesson and Upper School photography teacher John Alley, photography students experimented with these items to make a satellite signal visible, all while capturing incredible photos.
MIDDLE SCHOOL DIGS DEEPLY INTO CODING THROUGH “THINK TANKS”
In the fall, eighth-grade classes experimented with coding by way of small robotic spheres that whizzed across the floor (photo above center). This activity was just one example
of the “think tank” curriculum instituted by Middle School Technology Facilitator Barbara Coates this year, which aims to give students opportunities to think deeper and learn new skills in coding and computer programming.
GRADE 4 CLASSES COLLABORATE TO WRITE ORIGINAL PLAY
As part of this year’s grade 4 play (photo above left), students acted out the journey of the Jamestown colonists as they made their way from England to the New World. But the students didn’t just read from a script—with guidance from theatre teacher Craig Smith, they brainstormed and wrote the entire play themselves! This connected to Steward’s schoolwide cross-curricular theme of storytelling for the 2017-18 school year.
Sudanese “Lost Boys” turned social entrepreneurs who run the Humanity Helping Sudan Project and 734 Coffee
Presentation: Grounds for Good
“We understand the struggle of the war, so we decided to become advocates for refugees going through the same things. We want to educate the world about what’s going on and how they can make a difference.” – Ger Duany
FEBRUARY: KWAME ALEXANDER
Newbery Medal winner and New York Times bestselling author
Presentation: A Morning with Kwame Alexander
“All kids are curious and smart. They want to want to read. They want us to give them something that’s going to engage them and excite them; intelligent entertainment … we have to give [children] what they need to be able to ‘cross over’ and appreciate reading.”

Upper School Boys Brave the Shave to Raise Money for Childhood Cancer
Worldwide, a child is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes, according to research from St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to fight childhood cancer. That’s why sophomore Callen Smith, as president of the Childhood Cancer Awareness Club at Steward, hosted a fundraiser in the spring to benefit cancer research efforts by St. Baldrick’s.
In addition, Callen and a group of five Upper School boys participated in a head-shaving event in March to show their commitment to the cause. The event was emceed by Upper School science teacher Eric Hopp, who shaved his head and beard in honor of his wife, a cancer survivor. Stylists from a local Sport Clips salon volunteered to shave the participants’ heads during a Community Time assembly.
In total, our community raised $3,283 for St. Baldrick’s. To make your own donation, visit www.stbaldricks.org/ events/StewardCCAC.
Three Teams Represent Steward at Destination Imagination Globals
Every year, Steward students have the chance to compete in Destination Imagination, a fun, handson competition in which students participate in open-ended academic challenges in the fields of STEM, fine arts, and service learning. Teams work on solutions to their chosen challenges all year and compete in the spring, first locally, then statewide and globally for those that qualify.
Historically, The Steward School teams have advanced to the Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee for eight years of the 14 that DI has existed at the school. This year, we set a new record by having three teams (the most ever to attend at once) advance to Globals, including some students who were attending for the third time. The three teams attending Global Finals were:
Duct Tape Ducks, coached by grade 4 teacher Chris Tickle—fifth-graders Gilbert Cooper, Lauren Meaker and Deeya Natarajan; (all of whom attended for the third time); fourth-graders Karina Blanco, Spencer Nouri, and Micah Yoon; and third-grader Kiri Yoon. They tied for first place in the Drop Zone challenge (elementary level) at the state level, which qualified them for Globals.
Piece by Piece, coached by Steward parent Kimberlee Magrill—fifth-graders Shreya Natarajan and Gray Tindell; fourth-graders Ella Adamson, Tommy Inge, Jack Magrill, Oliver McGregor, and Kat Pope. They placed 14th (in the world) in the Inside Impact challenge (elementary level) at the Global tournament.
Z.A.S.M.M., also coached by Mrs. Magrill—sixth-graders Annie Adamson, Max Magrill, Zak Qureshi (who attended for the third time); and seventh-graders Sabina Mohanty and Morgan . They finished in second place in the Drop Zone challenge (middle level) at the state level, qualifying them for Globals.
Fourteen hundred teams from 19 countries attended Global Finals. In addition to the competition, pin trading is an extremely popular activity throughout the weekend, and for the last several years Steward teams have created their own pins to trade. This year's pin was a custom mandala in Steward blue and gold (pictured left).

LOWER SCHOOL RECOGNITION
LIZZIE PARRIS ’19
Walk down the hallways of the Upper School, and it’s likely that you’ll pass by an incredible piece of artwork created by junior Lizzie Parris. Some of her most visible work includes the 2017-18 spirit shirt design, a colorful Alice in Wonderland mural created for the fall 2017 Upper School hallway decorating contest, and a life-size cardboard cutout of Queen Elizabeth I made for Steward’s annual Elizabethan Faire.
Her pieces have also taken on a more serious tone—she drew a series of hands that represented the historical plight of African Americans for this year’s Black History Month gallery in the Upper School. We sat down with Lizzie to learn more about her passion for visual arts.
What do you love most about creating artwork?
When I was younger, I liked drawing as a hobby. It was something fun and creative that I could do to express my feelings. As I’ve gotten older, it’s become my way of communicating things that words might not be able to express. In the future, I want to go into illustration or character concept design for video games and movies. I love the playfulness of it. You can be serious about art, but it also has this really playful element where you can just create things because they are happy or fun to look at. That’s what I love about art—there are so many different things you can do with it.
Is there a particular person or event that has inspired you?
Karen Lane ’17 has definitely inspired me—she’s an incredible artist and also just a really cool person. She always speaks her mind about her beliefs, so I always try and express my ideas and beliefs in my art. [Former Upper School visual arts teacher] Rugene Paulette also encouraged me to create really unique pieces. During my freshman year in her art class, our yearlong project was themed “Uniting Cultures.” I decided to do something relating to protest as an action that
anyone can take part in. I created a canvas piece showing political buildings from around the world, and underneath, I had an outline of people in blue (with no other skin color) holding up signs for different causes. It’s one of my favorite pieces, and it was definitely a result of Karen and Mrs. Paulette inspiring me to create art that I believe in.
How has Steward supported your growth in your creative endeavors?
I’ve been here since kindergarten, and I’ve grown accustomed to the personalized environment. This is a place where there is a constant feeling of support—you feel safe and sheltered, but you’re also encouraged to get outside of your comfort zone. I know I can express myself through art because I have so many good people supporting me. You don’t always have that feeling at bigger schools, but Steward has always provided that for me.

I AM A
BONNIE ANDERSON
There are few Steward faculty members who have been with the school since the early years, and recently retired Upper School music teacher Bonnie Anderson is one of them. When asked how long she worked at Steward, she always replies, “I keep thinking 33 years, but they keep telling me 32. All I know is I was two years ahead of [former Upper School visual arts teacher] Rugene Paulette.” Regardless, Mrs. Anderson has left a permanent mark on the school that will last long after her departure.
In what ways has Steward changed the most in the past three decades?
It’s grown in every way imaginable—when I started, we had a small budget and I had to take what we had to turn it into the music program that we have today. The facilities and opportunities for students have certainly expanded, and our numbers have grown of course, but our mission is still the same—I would know, seeing as I’ve served on mission review committees multiple times [laughs]. We had a caring, family atmosphere back then, and we still have that now. I don’t think that’ll ever change.
What are some of your favorite moments from your time at Steward?
My top favorite has to be winning the Paul R. Cramer Award in 2015—I knew Paul well, so that was very special to me. Early in my career, we didn’t have a technical theatre class to build sets for the musicals—we had to rely on the maintenance crew and ourselves. I have
many fun memories of staying up all night long with Rugene, painting the sets and laughing until the sun rose. It’s also been so incredible to see my chorus and piano students improve and eventually make it to district-level competitions. I’ve really had some breathtaking moments with my students.
Many alumni who had you as a teacher now have children at Steward, whom you also have taught. How does it feel to have a legacy that spans generations?
It is with great pride that I was able to build this program, and it’s a great joy to know that parents remember the times we had together and that they’re proud to have their children learn from me. It’s the high point of my life, and that’s why it’s so difficult for me to leave. Teaching music is very personal—you’re giving part of your heart in everything you do, and you see it returned back to you in a song or a piece of music. It’s been a joy, and I have enjoyed every single minute.

What
I AM A
SUSAN CRAMER TWINING ’84
It was rather unexpected, but when I heard about the opportunity last summer, I was really excited to give it a try. Being part of the Steward Athletics program—throwing myself in and investing in the field hockey program in particular—is interesting for me because I was on Steward’s first-ever field hockey team when I was a student, so everything has really come full circle. I also love Steward and am happy to give back in whatever way I can, and if that involves coaching, I’m all for it.
What
I enjoy seeing the girls really love the game. They’re out there trying their hardest because they are passionate about field hockey. We have a lot of great talent on this team, and it’s exciting to think about the amazing things we can accomplish. Also, getting to coach with my daughter, Abbey (who also played field hockey at Steward), is just awesome—where
else would I be able to do that but Steward?
You recently planned an evening reunion to reconnect Steward theatre alumni and honor former theatre teacher Paul Osborne. What about Steward makes you want to continue being involved?
It was such a unique experience being a student at Steward when I was here. We were able to do so many different things because it was so small. I played tennis, basketball, and field hockey in addition to doing theatre, student council, and yearbook. And if everyone didn’t participate in a variety of activities, those activities just didn’t happen, so we all really bonded because of our class size. The theatre reunion (pictured at left) was incredible because there is just no way to put into words what that group of people did here. Seeing them was like being in Upper School all over again. That’s why I continue to be involved—Steward may be different now, but at the core, we’re still that community of everyone pitching in to make things happen.

STEWARD ATHLETICS
led you to becoming Steward’s varsity girls field hockey coach?
is your favorite aspect of coaching this team?
Susan Cramer Twining ’84 isn’t your typical Steward alumna: not only is she the daughter of former headmaster Paul Cramer, mother of alumni Abbey Twining ’13 and Mason Twining ’18, and a current board member, but she is also the head coach of the varsity girls field hockey team. We caught up with Mrs. Twining during the off-season to chat about her love of athletics and all things Steward.

Overcoming Physical Setbacks
Name any physical activity and there’s a good chance that Cathy Cooper Lipp ’93 has not only done it, but she’s also excelled at it.
From sailing on the College of Charleston’s nationally ranked sailing team during her undergraduate years to completing 200 hours of intense training in kundalini yoga in Goa, India, much of Mrs. Lipp’s life has been defined by athletics.
But it’s not only about physical health—in her roles as an instructor of yoga, spin, and meditation in Charleston, South Carolina, Mrs. Lipp is using her experience to help athletes improve their mental and spiritual health as well.
Mrs. Lipp has been passionate about athletics ever since playing tennis for seven years at The Steward School. But due to a career-ending knee injury, she was unable to pursue the sport in college.
That wasn’t the only physical setback she would undergo— many years later, she experienced a late-term miscarriage that resulted in physical and emotional trauma. She was unable to do any form of yoga because of a pelvic floor instability issue.
“It was an extremely challenging time for me,” Mrs. Lipp said. “Without my daily yoga practice, I had nowhere to channel stress. I ultimately decided to try an aggressive holistic approach and joined a mourning meditation group.”
Through a gradual process of movement-centered meditations and exercises, she began to regain momentum,
even gaining the strength to bike two hours a day for six days a week. “Meditation is really about initiating a change cycle: taking one limiting thought at a time and turning it around,” she said. “I tell this story to as many people as possible because meditation changed my life.”
It was then that Mrs. Lipp realized she wanted to use her experience to help others affected by injury or trauma. In addition to teaching spin and yoga classes, she began offering a series of workshops called “Wind and Warrior” for competitive athletes recovering from physical injuries. For two hours every Saturday for six months, Mrs. Lipp guides participants in spin, stretching, and meditation exercises. She also hosts a variety of meditation-based workshops for athletes at her alma mater, the College of Charleston.
“When you’re a performance athlete, you can get taken out of the game at any time,” she said. “My job is to use all holistic measures to help them get out of their funk and get back on track. It’s a fact that athletes who meditate have a 30 percent stronger performance record across the board.”
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons, one of whom is following in his mother’s footsteps by participating in competitive sailing.
Mrs. Lipp credits Steward (particularly former instructors Ian Coddington and Carolyn Brandt) for giving her the courage to pursue her passions. “Steward set me on a course where I wasn’t scared to try something new, like tennis,” she said. “With community encouragement, Steward made me unafraid to be my true self.”

Lipp ’93 draws on personal experience to teach meditation and exercise classes to injured athletes.
While researching options for ordering a custom watch for himself, Michael Brady ’08 had no idea that he would later go on to found his own custom watch company.
“I wanted a more personalized timepiece—a unique piece that no one else had,” he said. “While looking into my options online, I realized that I could probably create something for myself at a much lower price.”
After that, Mr. Brady—a 2013 graduate of Virginia Tech who was working in heavy residential construction in Washington, D.C. at the time— began doing research and collecting tools and specialty equipment to build and sell custom watches.
Two-and-a-half years later, he was catching up with friends in Richmond when they brought up the idea of Mr. Brady turning his hobby into a fulltime business. “I have always wanted to run my own business doing something I really love, and I knew this was the right time,” he said. He left D.C. and moved to Richmond in June 2017, and Belmont Watch Company was born soon after.
One of Mr. Brady’s recent clients hit close to home—he created a custom timepiece for the live auction at The Steward School’s 2018 Gala at The Jefferson Hotel. The limited edition “Spartan
It’s About Time
“When I heard about the auction, I thought it would be a great opportunity to do something to give back to Steward,” he said. “I had no idea it would end up being the highest selling item at the auction. That was really meaningful for me.”
The watch was purchased by current and former trustees and given to Head of School Dan Frank as a token of appreciation for his ongoing commitment to Steward. Mr. Frank had just been named the director of Upper School when Mr. Brady was about to graduate from Steward. “Even though I only knew him for a short time, it’s clear to me that Mr. Frank has always genuinely cared about the Steward community,” he said. “I can’t think of a better recipient of this timepiece.”
Mr. Brady added that it was his Minimester (formerly Alternate Program) internship with a robotics engineer and inventor in Orlando, Florida that inspired his love of making and building. “Being able to have such an amazing opportunity at Steward has really guided me to the path that I’m on,” he said. “If it weren’t for Steward, I would never have had the drive to pursue my passions and start my own company.”

HOPE
NOUN: a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen; a feeling of trust
VERB: to want something to happen or be the case
The Year in Review is a wonderful overview of the year, providing highlights and accomplishments that shaped our community. After looking at pictures, reminiscing about specific events, searching for names, and of course, reading the articles, try thumbing through the magazine again and stopping at the faces and names that catch your eye. Consider that each person, whether or not you know them, contributed to the Steward story.
The picture of me holding a “what do you stand for?” sign is from a day last fall when the administration invited staff members to take part in a student entrepreneurship project about what we “stand for.” I chose the word hope because it is relevant to me on both a personal and professional level. Anyone who works in the field of development comes to work with a sense of hope on a daily basis. At Steward, our hope is to create an environment where every student can grow into being their best self. Each of you shares this desire when you give of your time and resources. I am truly thankful that so many of you contribute so much.
On behalf of the Advancement team, thank you for your volunteer hours, financial support, and willingness to help whenever there was need. Much like the rest of the magazine, the next few pages will give only a glimpse of the generosity and altruism that impacted this year’s success. These parents, faculty, staff, students, alumni, grandparents, sponsors, and friends made contributions that help Steward fulfill its mission of preparing students for college and for life. It is my hope that we all continue to work together to keep advancing this mission.
Special acknowledgment to our 2017-18 volunteer leaders:
• Jay Poling and Tanya Cummings, chair and vice chair of the Board of Trustees, respectively
• Brian and Sam Corcoran, co-chairs of the Annual Fund Committee
• Dani Frazier ’09, president of the Alumni Board
• Lisa French, chair of the Arts Guild
• Wanda Welch and Sydney Smith, president and vice president of the Parents Association, respectively
• Delaney Mescall, president of the Spartan Club
• Jen Jennette, chair of the Spirit Committee
My acknowledgements would not be complete without extending a huge thank you to the faculty and staff, who work with so many volunteers, but especially to this year’s Advancement team:
• Development – Kate Boyles, Elaina Brennan, Jenn Downey, and Nan Semmelman
• Admissions – Robin Oliff, Jane Carter, Beth Farmer, Wallace Inge, and Allison Buchik
• Marketing – Rachel Williard, Kristina Kerns, Jenny Lankford, Kyra Molinaro, and— recently added—Stephanie Boyar and AJ Parson
Thank you, again, for making a fantastic Steward story this year.
Shawn Morrison Director of Development

GRANDPARENTS
AND SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY
This spring, Steward asked grandparents to share stories about their grandchildren and their experiences at Steward in honor of Grandparents and Special Friends Day. These stories were part of the schoolwide storytelling theme. Grandparents shared their pride, enthusiasm, and joy for the unique experience that Steward provides for students and entire families.
Here are some of those stories:
“In July of 2017, Gabby and Ryan Marshall arrived in Virginia. They left all of their friends and family in New York. As grandparents, we wondered how they were going to do. Were they going to make friends easily? Were they going to be comfortable in their new environment? Well the answer was an overwhelming YES! The children are thriving at Steward. Not only have they made wonderful friends, but also we can see them reaping all of the benefits from their amazing teachers and the nurturing Steward environment.”
– Barbara and Richard Brody
Grandparents of Gabby and Ryan Marshall
“As each new day dawns, Katie and Andrew awaken with excitement and anticipation! The reason for this exuberance is they are going to The Steward School, where they are confident that they will receive new information in a caring manner and that they are honored for their individualism.”
– Betsy and Jim Jollay
Grandparents of Katie and Andrew O’Leary
“Steward gave our granddaughter Jillian and me an opportunity to take a knitting class together. Justin showed us his technology skills and demonstrated his computer talents, which are amazing!”
– Sandra and Franklin Levin
If you have a story to share about your grandchild and Steward, we invite you to submit it via email to Kate Boyles at Kate.Boyles@stewardschool.org.

What has your experience been, first as a Steward parent, and now as a Steward grandparent?
It’s really been fun to watch and see all of the growth that has occurred over the years. Kate started at Steward in Middle School, and it was absolutely wonderful for her. She and her friends were all very close. She was a student of both history teacher Catesby Jones and music teacher Bonnie Anderson – and the boys [Dylan and Connor] got to enjoy being in their classes as well! The teachers have always been very wonderful. Steward has progressively grown, but is still so hands-on. Both boys have done well there, and have a connection with a lot of close friends. It’s just been wonderful to see how all the kids there seek
I AM A
CHRIS PORTER
When Chris Porter made the decision to send her daughter to Steward in 1986, she had no idea she would be joining a community that would remain a part of her life for decades to come. Born and raised in Richmond, Chris and her husband, Bill, enrolled Kate Porter Murray ’92 at Steward after hearing about it from Chris’s childhood friend, whose son had been one of the original Steward students. Kate thrived as a Spartan, and when it came time to send her own two children to school, she and her husband chose Steward. Chris’s grandsons – Dylan Murray ’21 and Connor Murray ’24 – have been proud Spartans since kindergarten.
their own way, and have a lot of opportunities to do things they’re interested in, and also to try out some new things. .
Tell us about the kinds of things your grandchildren have discovered an interest in at Steward.
Connor is on fire with plays. When he was in fifth grade, he was cast in a lead role in Steward’s Lower School musical It’s All in the Game, and he has loved it ever since. He’s at an acting camp this summer. Dylan is very interested in the outdoors. He’s going to an outdoor camp called Wilderness Adventure in Roanoke this summer. He was introduced to that program during Minimester at Steward in eighth grade.
What are some ways that you enjoy staying engaged with the Steward community?
When Kate was a cheerleader, I was a “Team Mom,” so I helped out with organization and fundraising. The big one was the Valentine’s Day carnation fundraiser. I remember carnations spread out on every surface of our house! When the boys were younger, I volunteered with the Lower School. I’ve also participated in the art auction, and volunteered in the Spartan Shop. And since about two years ago, I’ve taken part in getting the Steward Grandparents’ Association (GPA) up and running. We had a fun campaign that we called “Improve your GPA.” We discuss the ways we can volunteer and help out with things at Steward
like sports events or SpartaFest. We also have new grandparents fill out an Interest Finder form to find out how they might want to serve. It’s a great way to give them a place to start at Steward, and to get to know them a little better.

ANNUAL GIFTS
The Steward School is able to provide the best educational programs, retain top-notch faculty, and create an innovative and diverse learning environment because of friends from the community who make giving to Steward a priority. Steward’s Annual Fund is the backbone of our support and helps offset the true cost of a Steward education. Thank you to all of our donors who supported the Annual Fund this year! In addition, we are grateful to donors who have also given to support the Spartan Club, Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship, Latino Education and Advancement Program (LEAP), or other scholarships and programs at Steward.
The Steward School proudly recognizes donors for their contributions between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.

Honoring Four Years of Robson Scholarship Recipients
At Steward’s beloved Pancakes for a Purpose event each year, the new recipients of the Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship are announced and honored for their outstanding character, accomplishments, and leadership qualities. This year’s winners, Alaina Jefferson and Lucia Fogler, were the fourth set of rising ninth graders to receive four years of full Upper School tuition. With the start of the 2018-19 school year, we are proud that Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship winners in every Upper School class can now call Steward home! Only four years after Debbie’s sudden passing in September 2014, this scholarship is providing the kind of support she envisioned for our growing Upper School. She would have been incredibly proud of these young Spartans and the enthusiasm each of them brings to Steward.
