ANNUAL REPORT 2022
True Stewards Dear Steward Community, In past years, we have shared our Annual Report information in the summertime Year in Review magazine. This year, as we closed out our capital campaign, Steward50, and are celebrating our 50th year as a school, it seemed right to create this stand-alone publication. As you’ll see in the following pages, this community truly lives up to our name: we are Stewards. Through the generosity of hundreds of donors and volunteers, we are caring for our children’s experience of life today and stewarding them to a bright future. A Steward education depends on each of our contributions of time, talent, and treasure, and our students are directly impacted by your gifts. This is as true today as it has been since our founding in 1972. This year, we’ll reflect on 50 years of Steward. The gifts of the past have created the Steward we know, love, and benefit from today, just as current contributions will enrich our program for years to come. It is said that leaders answer the call to duty; this community, then, is clearly one of leaders. Thank you for your important role in our success this year and for helping to set the stage for the next 50!

Reflections on our Caring Community Dear Spartans, What a whirlwind! During my first year here, I have had the opportunity to spend quality time with many of you, hearing your personal Steward stories, your “why.” From this precious time together, a deep appreciation and affection has grown for each of you. We aren’t just a school — we are a community devoted to one another, working together to make the world a better place. And the history of Steward, from its humble beginnings to the present, offers a story that is indeed one for the books. There is no question that the bold and exciting moves Steward has made in its storied past are because of its loyal family of supporters.
Steward continues to build its financial resilience and prioritize the use of resources to support and develop our distinctive academic strengths: our amazing students and our renowned faculty and the compelling courses, research, and creative work they produce every day. We are especially grateful to those who have stepped up to demonstrate support. Together we are working to ensure that our students and alumni will be proud of their School and that future generations can come to Steward to unlock their creative potential and develop their capacity to lead change courageously.
Education is the foundation for growing global citizens who will face the world successfully.
As you read this Annual Report, you will hear firsthand about the impact giving has every day and for every student and the expressions of their appreciation. Every event attended, every gift made, every moment taken out of your day to help others, and every hour spent acknowledging the kindness of others adds another spoke on the wheel of philanthropy and gratitude at Steward. None of what we experience today in our community would be possible without the care you exhibit. As a community, we will continue to remain passionate in our belief that education is the foundation for growing global citizens who will face the world successfully.
Thank you for being a part of the Steward family and giving so generously this year. We are all better because of it.
With gratitude,
JENNI BOOKER BAKER, DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

and the Spartan Shop. A school’s dependence on each source of income can vary greatly depending on the school’s budget philosophy, the size of the endowment, and the donor base. In his book “Mind the Gap,” Dr. Richard J. Sogoian encourages schools to “operate your school on tuition alone.” This allows all other sources of revenue to be used for the enhancement of our programs, which directly impact students, faculty, and staff each year. At Steward, tuition and fees account for 92 percent of our budget. Having tuition income as a significant portion of our budget allows us to operate on predictable income, alleviating high-risk situations and instability in the financial markets while ensuring that we are prepared for unexpected situations to arise (like the pandemic!). Our longterm financial plan includes operating within tuition income while utilizing charitable donations and

SCHOLARSHIP GIFTS Scholarships are an incredible way to impact the life of a Steward student. We appreciate the donors who have chosen to give to named scholarship funds, thereby allowing increased access to a Steward education. The Steward School gratefully recognizes donors for their contributions received between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022. The Benevity Community Impact Fund The Honorable and Mrs. J. Mr. and Mrs. Mark A. Frankenburg
Giving Games is Steward's “Sparticipation” challenge — an opportunity for donors to help Steward continue to flourish by contributing to the Annual Fund. In 2022, the Giving Games theme was “Any Price is Right,” so donors played “The Price is Right” for Steward! The campaign featured educational highlights about the family of funds — athletics, technology, arts, tuition assistance, areas of greatest need, and professional development. The Giving Games series was a huge success thanks to the support of so many Spartans and two anonymous families who offered challenge grants that really energized the community!

SPECIAL EVENTS
Teeing Up for Spartan Spirit Ray Tate Spartan Golf Classic Ray Tate, the founding president of the Spartan Club, donated much of his time and energy to athletics at Steward. Mr. Tate, who established Steward’s Golf Classic in 2003, was a tremendous supporter of the School’s students, coaches, and athletic program, and in 2012 the event was renamed in memory of him. The 2021 Golf Classic took place at Independence Golf Course, and Bobbie Fass (mother of Isaac ’23 and Grace ’21) and Kelli Fox (mother of Gates ’23 and Victor ’22), event co-chairs, worked hard to ensure that participants had a great day. Through the efforts of volunteers and participants, more than $50,000 was raised to benefit the
Spartan Club, and the event brought together a record-setting 105 golfers. Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the Golf Classic is used for scholarships awarded to Steward seniors who are exceptional student-athletes. The 2021 Ray Tate StudentAthlete scholarship winners were Erin Langenburg ’22 and Wit Moore ’22. Erin and Wit were each presented a $1,000 scholarship by Chuck Wingfield (father of Chase ’23, Spencer ’25, and Mason ’31), president of the Spartan Club. Learn more about the Spartan Club on page 32 or by visiting the Athletics section of the Steward website.
Trucks and Shucks Fun, food, friendship Board President Keith Murphy '09 and the Alumni Association hosted one of the most highlighted events during the school year: the annual Trucks and Shucks event! The 2021 event was a resounding success with over 250 guests in attendance (including a record number of alumni). Between reminiscing with classmates, celebrating new school years, dancing with friends, and enjoying delicious food to their hearts' content, this event was one for the books.

Alumni Appreciation Social
Highlighting the Classes of 1977-99 In February, alumni from Steward’s earliest decades gathered on campus for an evening celebrating longtime friendships and memorable moments on campus. The School looks very different than it did during their time as students, and they enjoyed reminiscing with each other and a handful of teachers, including Upper School Science Teacher Leslie Kovach (parent of Dan ’16 and Jill ’18), Janet Rice (former physical education teacher, athletic director, varsity field hockey, and basketball coach), and Upper School Mathematics Teacher Todd Serr. Jimmy Benson ’92 (father of Ethan ’22 and Noah ’26) also spoke about what it’s like to be a parent of current students and to experience Steward from a different perspective. Cheers to the early years!
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast Serving up hearty thanks to special Spartans Steward volunteers are the absolute best, and in May, we celebrated them at a breakfast in the Bryan Innovation Lab. The members of the Alumni Association Board, Spirit Committee, ArtLink, the Parents Association, and the Spartan Club work throughout the year to make the Steward experience exceptional, and we are thankful for all that they do. Their blue-and-gold exuberance brings so much happiness to our campus and beyond. In the festively decorated Bryan Lab, Head of School Dan Frank and Director of Development Jenni Booker Baker thanked the volunteers for sharing their creativity, energy, and Spartan spirit. Kimberlee Magrill (mother of Max ’24 and Jack ’26), 2021-22 president of the Parents Association, and Chuck Wingfield (father of Chase ’23, Spencer ’25, and Mason ’31), president of the Spartan Club, shared personal expressions of gratitude to attendees. We are deeply grateful to Mrs. Magrill and Mr. Wingfield, and to the leaders of the other organizations who kept the School in good spirits all year long: Alumni Association President Keith Murphy ’09, ArtLink President Anne Williford (mother of Chip ’23) and Spirit Committee CoChairs Colleen Carpinelli (mother of Anna ‘25) and Carley Hamilton (mother of Richmond ’30 and Phillip ’32).
