Alpha Vinyl's innovation on show
Quick-Step brings its innovation of Alpha Vinyl to deliver an updated collection which is now a premium vinyl floor with easy installation, better comfort and true to nature design.
The innovation starts beneath every Alpha Vinyl floor with the integrated underlay. Precision made for seamless fitting, the integrated underlay eliminates worries about gaps and brings stability and durability to the vinyl floor’s Uniclic fitting. Bringing easier installation, it also adds comfort and quiet, so that Alpha Vinyl is ready for everyday life.
In the Alpha Vinyl Ciro herringbone collection (pictured right), Quick-Step has innovated with Unizip. This system needs just one plank – say goodbye to A&B installations – allowing for a much faster and simpler installation. And because just a single plank is used, it also saves money and cuts down on waste. For Alpha Vinyl Bloom, Quick-Step has developed an innovative new surface texture that brings even more authenticity and lets you feel every knot, crack and grain as if it were wood.
Niall Cassidy, Sales Regions Manager UK & Ireland, Unilin Flooring: “Our design and development team in Belgium has really delivered something special for new Alpha Vinyl. We believe the collection has raised the bar in what a vinyl floor can achieve and just how Alpha Vinyl will make itself a benchmark in innovation within the premium vinyl market.” www.quick-step.co.uk Stand C29
Smooth launch for UFH
F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has launched Stopgap 1600, a new fast-drying, fibre-reinforced smoothing compound that is formulated especially for use over underfloor heating systems prior to the installation of floorcoverings.
Stopgap 1600 can be applied between 3–40mm thick to encapsulate electrical wired or water-fed underflooring heating and cooling systems installed over internal subfloors in both domestic and commercial environments.
Playtime partnership with pupils
Rossendale manufacturer Interfloor has donated a large amount of materials to Broadway Primary School in Haslingden, to help fuel the creativity of pupils during breaktime.
The donation was made-up of surplus materials from the factory, Europe’s largest manufacturer of floorcovering underlays and accessories. It included large tubes and boxes that can be used in crafting or games, including a long plastic tunnel.
The items have been donated as part of the Outdoor Play and Learning programme, which aims to inspire children and encourage the reuse of materials in an eco-friendly manner rather than them being disposed of.
Interfloor were introduced to the OPAL programme through charity Active Lancashire in 2022 and have already made a couple of donations to the school this year. Interfloor works closely with Active Lancashire as both the annual headline sponsor of the Active Lancashire Awards and sponsor of this year’s Primary School of the Year category, as part of their aim to champion and support local young people and community initiatives.
Interfloor's Site Operations Director, Ian Merrifield, attended the handover of materials. He said, "Sustainability and community engagement lie at the core of our values. Partnering with Broadway Primary School aligns perfectly with our vision of making a positive impact on the local community. We are thrilled to provide the school with waste materials that the children can repurpose for their playground activities, promoting imaginative play while fostering a greener environment."
T 01706 238 810 www.interfloor.com Stand B22
Explaining the rationale behind the development, F. Ball Sales Director, Darren Kenyon, said: “We wanted to use the technology available to us to create the optimal smoothing compound for application over underfloor heating systems that are increasingly incorporated into flooring installations as part of new build or refurbishment projects. This means combining suitability for application at greater thicknesses than ordinary smoothing compounds and over an extensive range of subfloors. The F. Ball guarantee assures that the product will perform for the entire lifetime of a flooring installation, as long as the advised subfloor preparation and installation procedures are followed.”
The product is suitable for use over a wide range of absorbent and non-absorbent subfloors, including sand/cement screed, tile backer boards, concrete, plywood, granolithic, terrazzo, epoxy and polyurethane resins, ceramic and quarry tiles, as well as Stopgap waterproof surface membranes. It is walk-on hard from three hours after application and ready to receive floorcoverings in as little as 12 hours. To save further time, it can be pump applied up to 900m2 per day, dependent upon manpower, thickness applied and equipment used. Furthermore, its low-odour, protein-free formulation allows it to be used in biologically sensitive areas and where adjacent areas remain open.
Stopgap 1600 is available in 20kg units, which will achieve coverage of an area approximately 3.7m² applied at a thickness of 3mm. As a watermix smoothing compound, no bottle is required, making transporting the product easier and resulting in less plastic waste beingproduced by the flooring industry.
Lion’s share of FloorSkills Day
Lion Floor took part in the FloorSkills Open Day, as Europe’s largest independent flooring training centre welcomed flooring installers for a day of demonstrations and tour of newly extended facilities.
Independent training centre, FloorSkills, uses Lion Floor in training bays when resilient flooring installation is being taught and assessed. As part of this partnership, FloorSkills spent a good deal of time independently testing Lion Floor so that it could recommend it as an alternative to BS compliant plywood for use beneath sheet vinyl and LVT floors.
At the FloorSkills Open Day, Lion Floor joined manufacturers from right across the industry to demonstrate the ease of fitting and installation reliability that it provides to fitters and installers in attendance.
Peter Jones, managing director, Finnish Fibreboard (UK) Ltd, “We’re delighted to be able to support FloorSkills and the country’s next generation of installers with our hardboard that is designed to meet the unique demands of floorcovering installation."
With a construction that eliminates core gaps and overlaps commonly found in plywood, Lion is denser and more rigid, yet just as easy to install. It can be cut cleanly with a knife or saw and comes pre-conditioned to eliminate wetting before installation. Lion Floor is fixed with ring shank nails and FloorSkills has proven it compatible with many popular screeds and feather compounds.
Lion Floor is made in Finland from wood by-products making it one of the most environmentally friendly boards produced. The wood by-product used is also sourced locally and from legally managed sustainable PEFC forests. The first hardboard panel to be designed and manufactured specifically for the flooring industry, Lion Floor is also one of a very small number of fabricated underlays which can be used for LVT and other resilient floor coverings that meets British Standards and CFA guidance.

Record sales of £1.46bn for bullish Victoria
For the first time in the company's history, the total volume of flooring sold by Victoria plc in 2023 exceeded 200 million square metres (more than 29,500 football fields), generating record revenues of £1.46 billion.
Those revenues for the financial year ended 1 April 2023 were 43% up on the 2022 figures with EBITDA profits up 20% to £196m. Free cashflow doubled to £71m but net debt also increased significantly to £658m from £407m in 2022.
Victoria executive chairman Geoff Wilding commented:
"Victoria benefits greatly from being in a long-duration, steady growth industry that will drive compounding organic growth for decades. After making two-dozen careful acquisitions over the last 10 years we have now achieved a scale that, once we have completed the current integration projects, will result in higher productivity, more efficient logistics, wider distribution, and lower input costs than almost all our competitors."
The company said it was confident of a "sharp increase in earnings" in 2024 when it has completed all its acquisition integration tasks.
Victoria was due to announce its final results on August 15 but says auditors have requested further time to complete their final audit procedures.
To help keep investors informed, Victoria decided to announce key numbers from its preliminary unaudited results for the year ended 1 April 2023.
Condor expands with Hartex buyout
Europe's biggest carpet manufacturer Condor Group is expanding still further with the buyout of Hartex BV from bankruptcy.
Condor will take over the assets and most of the personnel of the Blokzijlbased Hartex in Holland which is a leading international producer of high-quality woven wall-to-wall carpet. The deal also includes the related Intercarpet bv in Aalten.
Both parties have already been working together for many years, meaning Condor Group is familiar with the Blokzijl business. Condor Group will continue the woven product portfolio under the familiar Intercarpet name.
Condor's statement said: "This acquisition gives Condor Group many options to expand its activities in the field of woven carpets. Furthermore, synergies arising from the group will be maximally utilised, while the recently installed multifunctional and sustainable (gasless) coating line offers many possibilities for evolving towards fully circular carpeting consisting solely of mono-material."
Rising flooring inflation bucks downwards trend
Retail price inflation in the flooring industry continues to buck the falling trend in the consumer prices index with another significant rise of almost 1% in July.
Latest data from the Office for National for National Statistics (ONS) said the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) saw another welcome slowdown, rising by 6.8% in the 12 months to July 2023, compared to 7.9% in June. But while the furniture sector also recorded a drop to 5.6% inflation in July compared to 5.9% the previous month, the rate of retail price increases in floorcoverings continues to accelerate - up to 9.9% from 9.1% in June.
Headlam warns on weak residential market
The recovery in the residential flooring market is going to take longer than expected says top distributor Headlam as they issued a profits warning to investors at the end of July. In a trading statement covering the six months to June 2023, Headlam said residential trading volumes were down nearly 7% on 2022.
"Recent residential trading volumes are weaker than expectations, with recovery now expected to take place over a more prolonged period. Rolling 12-month volumes are around 20% lower than 2019," said the company's statement.
Nevertheless, the value of Headlam's sales in the first half of this year were 2.5% up on 2022, helped by a strong performance by larger customers and its trade counter roll-out which were up 26% and 9% respectively.
"Gross margin and profit in H1 2023 were also impacted by a reduction in manufacturer led price increases and increased operating costs versus H1 2022," says Headlam. "Combined people and energy costs were up almost £5 million in H1 2023 against H1 2022 due to inflationary pressures, despite headcount being reduced in line with volume reduction during the period.
"Underlying profit before tax in H1 2023 was therefore lower at £6 million (H1 2022: £17 million), which also reflects strategic related investment to support future growth" said the statement.
Headlam announced that "the Company's underlying profit before tax for the year will be significantly below current market expectations" but said it was well-positioned to increase revenues and broaden its market presence.
Strategic investment is expected to total £6 million for the year, of which over half is in relation to the trade counter roll-out to support its growth to a £200 million business unit.

Sustainable style for herringbone homes
Granorte’s answer to LVT and WPC flooring, SolidTREND is now available in herringbone and features a sustainable cork backing for impressive thermal insulation and sound absorption.
Responding to the growing demand, Granorte has introduced four herringbone designs to the collection’s original wood plank and concrete tile effects. Each feature-packed design uses an embossed texture on its wear layer for a more natural appearance and comes with a microbevel for a defined plank or tile look.
Also boasting a waterproof Solid Rigid Core polymer for fantastic stability over large areas with no telegraphing, SolidTrend is a super-strong floor that has been designed with functional performance in mind.
Impact and indentation resistant, SolidTrend comes with a 0.55mm ceramic enhanced wear layer and a Duramond hard-wearing super matt finish for a realistic surface that offers high scratch and abrasion resistance. And as a product made by Granorte, SolidTREND also features a sustainable cork backing that makes installation easier and rooms feel warmer and quieter.
SolidTrend has been designed with a greater core density than WPC or SPC floors, so that it can be fitted in areas up to 500m2 without expansion joints. The cork backing eliminates minor irregularities and the click floor can be installed over a range of substrates. With excellent stability, there’s also no acclimatisation required before installing with the fast and easy i4F click system.

The safer way to spray
The healthier and safer way to spray; floorwise F597 Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive is the 100% dichloromethane (DCM) free answer to a range of on-site fixing challenges.
Receiving high praise from installers for its ability to stick better than most ‘normal’ sprays, floorwise F597 Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive has been developed by floorwise as a healthier alternative to ‘conventional’ heavy duty spray adhesives with no performance compromise. The high adhesive content and web spray pattern ensures a great delivery and reliable hold ideal for those quick on-site fixes. floorwise F597 is a great solution that can handle a range of sticky problems while being safer and healthier to use than conventional DCM based spray adhesives.
Removing the hazards associated with many spray adhesives of being potentially carcinogenic and harmful to the environment, the solvent used in floorwise F597 Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive is lighter than air and will quickly disperse into the atmosphere. This is in marked contrast to the layer of invisible, odourless gas left at ground level by DCM-based spray adhesives, which has been proven to create a significant risk of asphyxiation for installers working on their knees in poorly ventilated spaces.
Andrew Gill, group product manager, floorwise, says: “We developed floorwise F597 as the safer and healthier alternative to heavy duty spray adhesives and the response it has received has been nothing short of extraordinary. Sales have boomed and it’s clear that fitters are appreciating the winning combination of no compromise formulation and health benefits of floorwise F597 without a significant cost penalty.”
Even better, floorwise F597 Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive is also included in flooring’s biggest rewards promotion. With four points on a box of 12 cans, you can spray and save towards more than 60 tech and lifestyle rewards.
Look out for the green floorwise F597 cans at floorwise distributors across the UK and Ireland. With only one hazard warning on the can, floorwise F597 Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive is a fantastic way to start 2023 with a healthier and safer way to work.

The Acumen acts fast on faults
The Acumen have acted fast to address a gap in the provision of inspection services in the flooring trade and now have a network across the UK to help manufacturers and retailers rectify faults and keep consumers satisfied with their floors.
The business was born in July 2022 and backed by two experts in the sector, Paul McRoberts and Warren Todd who have over 65 years’ experience in the industry.
“Many manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors were left without inspection services when there was a sudden reduction in the market capacity for manufacturing inspection services. We were then approached by a number of companies asking if we could help,” says Paul. “We had and still have a philosophy of repair rather than replace where we can, and if a fault or issue could be rectified on the first visit then we would go ahead and just get it done. Regardless of who was at fault.”
“Just this week I visited a consumer who had complained that his carpet was delaminating and rucking up, said Paul. “The likely cause was a spill. But the consumer said that there was no spill, the fitter said there definitely was and the retailer said it was a manufacturing fault. The manufacturer sent us in and we were able to recondition the backing, re-bond the carpet to the backing and re-fit. All included in the inspection fee.”
The Acumen now has a network of 12 sub-contracted surveyors around the country and in addition to manufacturer’s inspections, they are trialling a smooth flooring pre-installation survey, where the suitability of the subfloor is tested and they give recommendations to avoid some of the most common issues that are due to sub-floor unevenness and moisture issues.
The Acumen is also having a good level of success with their dispute resolution service. This is where all parties, manufacturer, retailer , fitter and customer enter an agreement to abide by The Acumen’s report and findings. The cost of the report is split by all parties.

Man-made carpets compete to boost margins
As the flooring market descended into summer doldrums for some months this year, what’s the best sales strategy in a tight market? Constrain pricing to help hard pressed consumers afford something, or enhance the product offer to get better sales from those that can afford it?
The answer, of course, is both! There’s business out there to be had but there’s certainly no easy money about and manufacturers have had to tread a tightrope on costs and quality to get the balance – and your profit margin – right.
Betap, for example, are keeping a dual perspective on the current market conditions. “It can be a misconception that a tight market equates to a race to the bottom on price and margin,” says UK Product Manager Andrew Bramall. “We keep close to the UK market and believe that consumers are looking for good value and a carpet that will meet their expectations.”
Betap’s approach is to introduce ranges with added value. That could be a premium backing such as its new Fusion fleece or creating a 1/10th gauge version of a popular 1/8th gauge range. A good example of this is the new Winchester 1/10th gauge which is engineered to a popular price point with the added handle and performance of the tighter gauge.
Charlotte Coop, marketing manager, says: “Polypropylene used to be considered a rather coarse fibre, but improvements have meant we’ve been able to engineer softer yarns without a trade-off in stain-resistance or cleanability. These softer yarns make polypropylene deep pile qualities more desirable and attractive and so we’ve been expanding the number of options in our Stainfree family.”
Affection also has a fleece backing, adding comfort and warmth, while making the carpet more pliable and so easier to install; it brings benefits to homeowners and installers. The fleece can also help to reduce underlay thickness. Homeowners can pick from 2.5m, 4m and 5m widths depending on room sizes and the carpet is rated suitable for heavy domestic use. With Abingdon Flooring’s Stainfree for Life promise and a 10-year wear guarantee, Affection is a quality deep pile carpet that offers excellent value compared to nylon and polyester styles.
The latest launches at the Cormar Carpet Company show how a company can enhance the appeal of a popular range of easy clean, manmade carpet.
But Andrew adds: “On the other side of the coin, we are adding some simplified ranges, keeping SKU's to a minimum which means our customers stock-holding is lower. This also gives a better service and enables a sharper price point.”
Abingdon Flooring is also committed to an added value approach, as demonstrated by the launch of Affection in its Stainfree range. Made in Britain in eleven trend colours, Affection offers a 14mm luxuriously deep and invitingly soft pile in a tenth gauge construction to join a growing range of deep pile Stainfree styles.
Affection benefits from Abingdon Flooring’s bleach cleanable and stainresistant polypropylene Stainfree yarn. In its latest generation, the yarn has become softer and more luxurious, fuelling the launch of several deep pile Stainfree carpets.
“It can be a misconception that a tight market equates to a race to the bottom on price and margin,”
“These softer yarns make polypropylene deep pile qualities more desirable and attractive and so we’ve been expanding the number of options in our Stainfree family.”

Man-made carpets compete to boost margins continued from page 29
Emphasising affordability
Everyroom’s great value carpet collection has gone from strength to strength since its launch just over a year ago, hitting the mark for affordability and desirability.
Its growth has been astounding, with over 8,000 carpet and vinyl stands in place with retailers nationwide, showing just how popular it has been with retailers and consumers alike.
Within a year the portfolio has increased from a handful of carpet and vinyl ranges to include Everyroom 8mm and 10mm underlays, as well as the brand-new Identity range of budget friendly LVT, both of which can be seen in person at The Flooring Show if you are visiting this month.
The core offering of carpet has been enriched by an 8mm and 10mm underlay and Everyroom’s complete carpet system has solidified itself as the go-to option for many retailers. The affordable ranges create a great quality and great value solution for any installation.
With a refreshed palette of on-trend shades, the ever-popular Primo Ultra range is now even more attractive with the introduction of brand new, bold colour options. First launched in 2009 and a firm favourite ever since, Primo Ultra is now available in an extensive palette of 20 plain and heather shades to extend the appeal for consumers seeking to introduce a practical, yet stylish carpet into their home.
“We’re excited to expand the collection this year to offer an even wider choice of durable, low maintenance carpets at great value and in a popular colour palette to suit every homeowner’s needs and style.”
But this year has also seen the introduction of an exciting new range, Trinity. A premier, heavyweight carpet perfect for those high traffic areas of the home, Trinity is manufactured by Cormar in a collection of 14 tri-colour heather shades and comes with a 10-year Stain and Wear Warranty, providing the perfect hard-wearing solution for busy homes.
David Cormack, Marketing Director at Cormar Carpets said: “Our Easy Clean collection continues to grow in popularity as a reliable and hardwearing choice for family homes. We’re excited to expand the collection this year to offer an even wider choice of durable, low maintenance carpets at great value and in a popular colour palette to suit every homeowner’s needs and style.”
The new British-made Beyond Wool collection from Furlong Flooring demonstrates the application of innovation to promise excellence beyond expectations and grab consumers attention. This collection offers customers the desired wool-like appearance with essential durability.
Comprising five ranges of luxury twist and loop pile carpets, the Beyond Wool collection seamlessly marries the natural wool-like look with practical stain and moth resistance. From the twist pile ranges of Renaissance, Elegance & Serenity to the loop piles of Henley & Marlow, this collection encompasses versatility. The 100% recycled yarn loop pile range of Amesbury & Castlerigg, adds to the appeal.
The Amesbury & Castlerigg range, constructed from recycled polypropylene yarn, offers not only an environmentally conscious choice but also practicality with 100% bleach cleanable fibres. The collection provides a choice of natural hues and on-trend loop designs, ensuring a trouble-free fit with Furlong’s Combi-bac backing.
The Beyond Wool collection embodies value, choice, and contemporary style, delivering hard-wearing and stylish carpets suitable for any home space.
"...demonstrates the application of innovation to promise excellence beyond expectations and grab consumers attention."
The latest initiative from Kingsmead is also giving consumers reasons to make a purchase. Thinking Beyond is Kingsmead’s new collection of carpets designed to be more sustainable and hardwearing, whilst still providing a soft, luxurious feel underfoot.
With sustainability increasingly at the forefront of people’s minds, Thinking Beyond enables customers to be more considered in their homes. The new range uses Econyl yarn, a type of regenerated nylon made from entirely recycled waste materials, such as fishing nets, fabric scraps and old carpet tiles. The regeneration process ensures the nylon yarn is brought back to its original state, without losing its durability, strength or colour fastness.
Featuring a soft and plush velvet-feel texture, Kingsmead’s new collection provides a sophisticated and elegant option in 15 versatile colours to suit any type of décor, Thinking Beyond is stain-resistant and easy to clean, making it the ideal choice for high-traffic rooms. As a result, the collection was recognised with a high commended accolade in this year’s Ideal Home Living Room awards.

The culmination of the 2023 awards scheme celebrates the ideas, imagination and innovation that drive forward the UK flooring industry.
The star achievers: 2023 winners announced
Entries to this year’s Flooring Innovation Awards scheme were up 35%, so the judges had plenty of top quality submissions to consider and now, after the first round of judging, the “stars” of the Flooring Innovation Awards have been announced.
The judges selected the winners (shown right) across 10 categories for the distinction of these prestigious awards, covering all flooring types, design, accessories, installation products, environmental, marketing and technology.
“We're delighted that the flooring industry has bounced back with award submissions substantially higher than last year, it was a very competitive field,” said organiser Bridgette Kelly. “The winning entries bear testament to the creativity and innovation that is driving the trade forward in challenging times."
The National Flooring Innovation Awards are designed to be different to the usual ranked prizes given out across the industry and instead sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector.
“It’s not easy to make a difference and distinguish your products in a crowded market,” says awards judge David Spragg, of the scheme’s sponsors, The Stocklists magazine. “It’s much easier to be more me-too, especially when there is less money about to take a chance on something new.
“So it’s reassuring that there are still so many innovators in the flooring industry who bring forward creative and commercially-savvy ideas that tempt consumers to keep investing in their homes,” he said.

Cushion vinyl inspires desire
With a new manifesto, identity, website and point of sale refresh, the new LeoLine is lifting the position of cushion vinyl in retail stores across the country.
Under the motto ‘floors as unique as you are’, LeoLine is making the practical and cost-effective floor finish desirable for a new generation of homeowners.
Alpha experience at Academy
GNG Flooring is looking forward to making full use of QuickStep Alpha Vinyl for its future LVT herringbone installs.
Essex-based GNG Flooring is a Quick-Step Laminate & Wood Master Installer and has long-been an advocate of the Belgian brand’s quality and ease of fitting. Having completed the Vinyl Foundation Installer course at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring, GNG Flooring is now gearing up for the Vinyl Master Installer course, kicking off this September.
Simon Gee, owner, GNG Flooring: “I’m a firm believer in the quality of Quick-Step. Not only are my customers pleased with the design integrity and performance of Quick-Step floors, the precision manufacturing and excellent consistency always results in a floor that’s great to install.
LeoLine will use The Flooring Show at Harrogate to give a preview of a new display concept that takes the next step in the brand’s development. Bringing the design and made in Belgium quality of LeoLine to the fore, the new display shares similarities with premium flooring point of sale – clever lighting, floating samples and a smart back finish – and puts LeoLine firmly in the realm of desirable flooring choices.
Stuart Reeves, sales director, LeoLine says: “We’re proud of the new look LeoLine, after all, it’s been a ground-up redesign of every touch point, as well as new collections. The prototype display is the culmination of much hard work behind the scenes from the team and is an impressive site. www.leoline.co.uk

GoodWeave champions responsible rugs
GoodWeave International, the leading global nonprofit organisation working to stop child, forced and bonded labour in global supply chains, is serving as an official sustainability partner for Decorex International 2023.
GoodWeave invites designers, buyers and others working in the design industries to visit its stand to talk about about workers’ rights, responsible sourcing and how the GoodWeave program can help achieve their corporate responsibility goals. Visitors will also learn about GoodWeave’s established worldwide network of more than 190 licensed importer brands and retailers, as well as its more than 230 licensed manufacturers in India and Nepal.
Supporting Decorex’s sustainability focus, GoodWeave will share the positive social impact its licensing and certification programme has on worker communities involved in making rugs and interior home textiles in India and Nepal.
“However, I’ve experienced a lot of demand recently for herringbone LVT flooring, it’s hugely popular. While I would rather recommend Quick-Step, I’ve had to turn to other suppliers as there just wasn’t something suitable in the collection. So, I was super excited to learn about Alpha Vinyl and the new Unizip joint that makes it easy to install herringbone LVT."
Available on the Alpha Vinyl Ciro collection, Unizip eliminates the need for A&B herringbone planks and comes with the same fitting simplicity that has made Uniclic the world’s best joint for laminate installation. Speeding up installation, saving money and cutting down on waste, Unizip makes Alpha Vinyl Ciro GNG Flooring’s herringbone vinyl of choice.
The Vinyl Master Installer course is a two-day theory and practical course to gain accreditation by Quick-Step. Successful completion gives installers the chance to provide a confidence inspiring Lifetime Installation Warranty and delivers a range of other benefits, including technical backup and a full set of Alpha Vinyl swatches.

Abingdon Flooring Solve the colour puzzle
Abingdon's stand this year has been designed to help you solve the carpet colour puzzle as the company marks an important anniversary at The Flooring Show.
2023 is the company's 20th year of making carpets in Britain and as they celebrate in style at The Flooring Show, you’ll be able to explore Abingdon's cost-competitive collections, including the wool-rich carpets of Wilton Royal, Love Story polyester fibre styles and the next generation polypropylene yarns of Stainfree. Throughout the entire range, you’ll find a carpet to fit any customer’s taste. From the classic and unmistakably elegant wool loops with Wilton Royal’s Charter Berber loop and Charter Plain Loop, right through to the luxurious silk-like Love Story Deep Feelings and the rich colours of Stainfree Caress; the Abingdon Flooring range is awash with beautiful carpets engineered to bring a proposition that gives value at every turn.
With such a diverse collection comes an incredibly wide selection of colours. The almost-white of champagne, the natural fleece-like Romney, countless sophisticated greys and resplendent old gold, azure and terracotta; it’s an intoxicating mix which leaves little doubt that Abingdon is one of the country’s best at coloured carpets. That does leave a bit of a puzzle in deciding which to choose. But don’t fear, the stand this year is designed to point you in the right direction.
Abingdon can’t wait to show you what they’ve been working on and look forward to welcoming you on to the stand in Hall A Stand 25. Hall A Stand 25 • 01274 655 694 • www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Campaign for Wool Keep warm with wool
The Campaign for Wool comes together with the Wool Carpet Focus Group for the 2023 edition of The Flooring Show in Harrogate, which this year highlights how to 'Keep Warm With Wool’. This year’s show will be looking at all aspects of sustainability, and the role this plays for the flooring industry.

Unilin Flooring Unlock outstanding innovative design
Visit the house of Unilin Flooring UK & Ireland to discover its leading flooring brands. For the first time ever, Unilin Flooring UK & Ireland will be at The Flooring Show, as the company brings together its leading residential flooring brands, Quick-Step, Moduleo and LeoLine.
In Hall C Stand 29, you’ll be able to find the latest product innovations from three of the country’s most recognisable brands. The new Alpha Vinyl collection from Quick-Step, the Moduleo Roots collection including a new herringbone plank, Moduleo LayRed engineered vinyl flooring, and LeoLine’s brand new collection will all be on show.
David Bigland, sales and marketing director, Unilin Flooring UK & Ireland, talks through the reasons for taking the company to The Flooring Show: “Unilin Flooring brings together two hugely successful companies in Unilin, manufacturer of Quick-Step, and IVC Group, the company behind Moduleo and LeoLine. As a single entity, Unilin Flooring now commands a position as one of the country’s largest flooring companies.
Quick-Step
Alpha Vinyl is Quick-Step’s premium luxury vinyl tile collection with integrated underlay that makes the floor even easier to install, more comfortable and much quieter. The feature packed LVT’s underlay is precision made to fit seamlessly, so that there’s no concerns about gaps underneath and uses high-quality materials that ensure the ultimate in durability and stability.
The new Alpha Vinyl Bloom collection features an innovative surface structure that redefines authentic vinyl flooring. Whereas most vinyl floors have three or four depths of texture, Alpha Vinyl Bloom now features up to 75 depths. This means a floor that tracks the depth of every detail and a design that’s more realistic than any other vinyl on the market.
“Each brand designs and makes floors in Belgium, so it made sense to align together and share distribution and warehousing capacity so that we could service our retail customers better. However, Quick-Step, Moduleo and LeoLine still remain as individual brands with unique products aimed at different parts of the market. We’ll bring this collective strength and unique individuality to The Flooring Show at the House of Unilin Flooring.”
Hall C Stand 29 • www.unilin.com/en/flooring
Alpha Vinyl also includes Ciro herringbone flooring. The collection features the innovative Unizip click profile which needs just one plank type, allowing for a much simpler and faster installation. This revolutionary system also minimises installation waste, as it’s much easier to know how many planks are required.
Moduleo
Designed and made in Belgium with the future in mind, the reimagined Moduleo Roots collection embraces the newest interior trends for a luxury vinyl floor that’s appealing, aspirational and in tune with nature. The Flooring Show will be a chance to see how Roots can transform your LVT offer. Alongside, there will be an exclusive preview of the new Roots herringbone format, which brings a more versatile plank size suitable for a wider range of rooms.
LeoLine
A market-leading residential flooring brand for 25 years, LeoLine recently unveiled a smart new look as it sets out to make cushion vinyl cool again. With a manifesto to create the next generation of flooring, LeoLine is on a mission to engage with a new wave of flooring buyers through floors that bring the choice, colour and vibrancy for any space. Across nine cushion vinyl flooring collections, homeowners can now discover a LeoLine floor that’s as unique as they are. So, whether they are hunting out herringbone or tracking down tiles, the LeoLine collection holds the perfect look.
Moduleo’s award-winning LayRed engineered vinyl collection will also be making an appearance. The multi-layered floor with integrated underlay offers exceptional pattern variety and realistic natural design along with easy installation, excellent acoustics and impressive strength.
The Flooring Show will be the first chance to see LeoLine’s new display that continues the brand’s journey to position cushion vinyl as a desirable option. With clever lighting, floating samples and a smart back finish it puts LeoLine firmly in the realm of desirable flooring choices.

Carpet Recycling UK Know your waste
‘Come prepared with knowledge of your current waste and recycling contracts if you want help in finding sustainable solutions to your carpet and textile flooring waste streams’ is the message from Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) for show visitors.
“Understanding the impact of carpet and textile flooring waste on your business operations helps us to progress conversations that can assist you in finding more sustainable outlets for surplus waste materials such as commercial broadloom carpet, carpet tiles and underlay,” says Adnan ZebKhan, CRUK Scheme Manager.
Through its 17 core members, 136-strong membership and wider network, CRUK continues to build on collaborative momentum and act to reduce textile flooring waste and resource usage ahead of any potential changes to UK waste policy and legislation such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The independent, not-for-profit trade association is urging manufacturers, contractors, retail flooring companies and recyclers to engage with its network to collaborate in putting sustainable processes in place that minimise waste, save on costs and keep resources in the supply chain longer. The aim is to consider reuse and recycling at the design stages and produce products for the circular economy and to implement processes to retrieve them for recycling.

FLOORING FACTSHEET ADHESIVES
SELECTION CHECKLIST
The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide.
Open Time:
The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked.
Odour:
Low odour, solvent-free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.
Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.
Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.
Strength:
Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured.
Underfloor Heating:
A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate.
To find out more visit f-ball.com/training
ADHESIVE TYPES
Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticised PVC and most modern flooring.
Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics.
Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations.
Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.
Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.
Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard.
While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces.
The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation.
Special Performance:
Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments.
Air Quality and the Environment:
The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.
Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range –of an adhesive.
Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

Buying Groups
Pick the right
How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently
• Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join?
Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains.
More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...
Key benefits
Increase margins
• Group purchases to get beneficial rates
• Rebates
• Exclusive higher-margin products
• Special promotions
One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers.
Access professional services
• Business and financial services
• IT and internet support
• Training and workshops
• Professional bodies
Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use
• Check out the product ranges offered including the own-label options and the UK/European mix
• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your flexibility to run your business the way you want
Increase sales
• Best of both worlds’ proposition
• Wider ranges and exclusive products
• POS, displays and merchandising support
Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group –this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.
Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers
• Regular meetings and supplier presentations
• Regional workshops
• Helpline
A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Carpet trouble-shooter

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair.
Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Colour matching
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc).
The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions.
Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
Flattening
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Shading
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
Pile Reversal
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Shedding
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Indentations
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
Samples Installation
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Vinyl Flooring
Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.
Benefits
• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs
• Impressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.
• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.
• Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.
• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.
• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.
Installation
Installation preparation
Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues.
Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels.
However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.
Product options
• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.
• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.
• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.
• Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability.
Appearance options
Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT. Other notable options include:
• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic –the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.
• Grouting and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.
LVT construction
Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip.
Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness.
Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)
PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable.
Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems.
Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations.
Approved
Approved
In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels.
The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home.
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
Benefits
Good underlay will...
• Improve underfoot comfort
• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening
• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear
• Improve thermal insulation and warmth
• Increase sound insulation
• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections
• Last the lifetime of the carpet
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming
• Reduce carpet life
• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots
• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly
• Not meet British Standards
How thick?
A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Types
PU (polyurethane) foam • This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Sponge rubber • A more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
Crumb rubber • Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Laminate underlay • There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.
Combination • A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
Underfloor heating underlay • Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.
Felt • This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.
Pre-tackified underlay • A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Underlayment for LVT • This provides a smooth surface on which you can glue down immediately. If there is a time or acoustic issue or a problematic underfloor, a stable, smooth dual underlay system will provide the best solution.

Carpet types
Tufted
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED
Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
CUT PILE
Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP
When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.
Woven
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.
Axminster
The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton
Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Flat weave
Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
