Alexa Goddard ALEXA GODDARD
Signed to Roc Nation – the record label founded and managed by music legend Jay-Z – Brit-born solo artist, Alexa Goddard, is set for stardom. Singers rarely come equipped with the experience 25 year old Alexa does. At 14 years old she was travelling across Europe recording early demos; by 18 she’d toured the United States and by 22 she was one of the ten most
subscribed musicians in the history of YouTube in the UK with over 40 million views and a Top 20 single under her belt. Student Mag grabs a chat with Alexa Goddard when she stops off in Sheffield to perform at the Meadowhall and Capital FM Christmas Lights Switch On concert alongside pop pin-ups Union J, and bad boy rapper, Pro Green…

Earlier this year, you signed a multi-album deal with Jay Z's Roc Nation record label. Life doesn’t get much better than that, surely? It’s a dream come true! Roc Nation saw my videos on YouTube and got in touch, then soon after they signed me. I was lucky enough to meet Jay-Z in person recently and he introduced me to his wife Beyoncé – it was one of the best moments of my life. She is my idol. Even though it’s a multi-album deal, I’m just taking it one step at a time at the moment and trying not to get too carried away planning. When should we expect the release of your first album? Fingers crossed it will be released early next year. I’ve spent so long doing covers but now I want my own album out there for people to hear the real me. Have you enjoyed your time in Sheff – performing at Meadowhall Lights Switch On? I live in the South of England so this was my first time here! The fans were awesome but I wish I’d had more time to explore the city. I really wanted to go shopping but it’s a five hour drive from where I live so I’ve had no time. Next time, I will. I managed to eat a Nandos here though.
If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing? How will you be spending Christmas? Eating lots of good food with my family. What’s on your wish list? Three random items – a juicer, a leather jacket and some skinny ripped jeans. What’s the best present you’ve ever received? A pink bike when I was seven or eight. I’d wanted it for so long I was overwhelmed to finally have it. Will you be making any New Year’s Resolutions? I need to stop eating fast food. I eat way too much of the stuff. What has been the best moment of 2014? I opened the main stage at Wireless Festival. It was incredible – so much fun. How would you describe your music in three words? Versatile, fun and thoughtprovoking.
Singing has been my lifelong ambition and it’s what I enjoy doing so I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I did once work as a care worker though, looking after a lady with Alzheimer’s. She had me in stitches all the time – she was incredible. How important has YouTube and social media been to your success? It’s thanks to YouTube that I have a record deal and I love keeping in touch with fans via social media. My success is down to their support. Who inspires you musically? John Legend and Whitney Houston are my heroes. Who would be your ideal dinner date guests? Alan Carr – he’s hilarious, and Darren Brown – he fascinates me. What’s the best thing about your job? Performing. There’s no feeling like stepping out on stage. You feel so powerful. What’s next for you? Making more music.

cheryl : only human. Since Girls Aloud exploded onto the pop scene 12 years ago, Cheryl has experienced some very public highs and lows. Nowadays, it seems like everything is going genuinely well for her: in the summer she got married to her French boyfriend, is back in her role as an X Factor mentor and has most recently made chart history by becoming the only British female artist to have five No.1 singles. Her two most recent singles have come from her fourth album, ‘Only Human’. The music is noticeably upbeat and optimistic, as Cheryl explains: “I
14 | Stu-Mag
think ‘Only Human’ is a record that says ‘Have fun, we’re only human, fight on when things go bad cos it’s going to be fine again”. From the catchy fasttempo of ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ to the R&B influenced ‘Live Life Now’ and ‘Goodbye Means Hello’, it’s clear that Cheryl is finally happy and ready to wave goodbye to her past. Most of the songs on ‘Only Human’ would go down a treat in a club, especially the single ‘I Don’t Care’, which has pure sass and independence written all over it. Her soft vocals compliment the pop/R&B fused
beats of this album beautifully, ‘Waiting for Lightning’ in particular is a powerful anthem that would be a definite ‘hands in the air’ track in a live venue. With ‘Only Human’, Cheryl has become an established artist who knows what music she wants to make. She’s finally happy, and this album shows it off perfectly. Words: Megan Wright

Alabama 3: Wimmin from W.O.M.B.L.E Vol 2 Since they first got together in 1996 it is fair to say the Alabama 3 have done things the old fashioned way. Maybe most well-known for doing the theme tune on the Sopranos. The group of 10 from Brixton, London, threw together a house party and simply started playing. Incredibly the band are now releasing their 12th album. The gang have added some extra soul to their second volume of Womble, getting some powerful sista voices into the studio to help give that extra zing. Aurora Dawn and Devlin Love were adding their unique sound of rocky, electronic
jazz. Put this all together and the album really has a spark which will blow you out of the water. The opening track ‘Black Betty’ starts the album off with a real kick. Aurora Dawn makes the sound her own with a revolutionary sound of a rock classic. The 12 songs on the album are really sassy sounding, which serve as a platform, for female conflicts and coalition. It is definitely a step apart from Womble volume 1 which saw the group try and get involved with the youth in the community. A tour is only fitting after completing the album.
The group will kick off in Northampton and complete a 19-date tour seeing them travel around the UK ending with a homecoming in Brixton. There will be a whole load of new tracks along with some classic Alabama 3. Producer Wizard will also continue his good form by going on stage and creating the great clash that old school rock n roll has with modern mixing techniques. Words: Edward Wade

HUDSON TAYLOR Words: Jessica Fogarty Having honed their craft at an early age busking in Dublin, Irish brothers – Alfie and Harry (Hudson Taylor is their surname) have become a word-ofmouth favourite with their energetic live shows. Their DIY work ethic led them to release their debut EP on their own label Craic Records and entirely under their own steam they charted the Battles EP at no.14 on iTunes UK and no. 1 in Ireland. Drawing inspiration from their parents’ record collection – Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills & Nash are cited as particular favourites – the brothers fuse classic and contemporary influences to create raw, folk-infused melodic pop that puts them in the same bracket as Michael Kiwanuka and Ben Howard. At times stomping and spirited, at others stripped back to only acoustic guitars, Hudson Taylor possess that rare talent to combine energy and intimacy into their performances. You can see why people are talking. And for Hudson Taylor, this is only the beginning.
How would you describe Hudson Taylor? We’re a singer song writing folk-pop influenced harmony driven duo. Was becoming a music artist / performer always your career goal? Not at all. We’re privileged to call it a career. Music was always a hobby – I [Harry] did study the technical side of music – creating apps – but I never imagined becoming an artist. Alfie dropped out of college and was working in a hairdressers. You started out busking on the streets of
18 | Stu-Mag
Dublin. How did you land a record deal? Yeah we started out five or six years ago busking – playing covers. Playing together worked for us so we started writing music for our duo. A music management company saw our videos on YouTube and offered us a deal. We moved to London two years ago and literally have been gigging non-stop for the past 24 months. Is there any sibling rivalry between you? We’re blessed that there’s no fighting. I think we got it out of the way when we were young. There’s never much fuss at home or at work.
What inspires your music writing? Our music is inspired by our changing lives – living in London away from our parents. It’s been hard going but makes meaningful lyrics. Also, we’re inspired by the music we listen to – mainly artists like Ben Howard and Damien Rice. What do you prefer – a small intimate gig or a big concert show? There’s positives and negatives to them both. You don’t get the intimacy with an arena or festival show but you do get to showcase your music on a big scale. It’s easier to create an atmosphere and make a connection when fans are close too.
What are your plans for Christmas? This year will be the first time we’re not going home. But straight after Christmas we’ll be going to New Orleans to perform at a cousins wedding. What do you have planned for 2015? We’re back touring in February which we’re really excited for. Tickets are selling really fast. And we’re currently working on the release of our debut album – Singing For Strangers – released in February. @HudsonTaylor

The Strange Library By Haruki Murakami.
out 2nd dec. Just in time for Christmas, Murakami has brought us a deliciously creepy childhood tale that will settle itself beneath your skin and chill your spine. The Strange Library chronicles the story of a young boy who finds himself caught in a mysterious underworld. The
“reading room” in which he finds himself captive is located in a maze beneath the library. The boy finds himself drawn into a disturbing world of characters: a “sheep man”, a woman who can communicate using only her hands and a man with a worrying taste for the brains of little boys. Written in Murakami’s distinctive experimental style, The Strange Library is the kind of book that you must let flow through you like water, before letting it harden and crystallise. Only then will you be able to appreciate the gravity of its truth. As captivating and enigmatic as its author, The Strange Room shows why Haruki Murakami remains one of the world’s greatest authors.

hysterical love-triangle. Fast forward over 50 years and we meet Emily Conway. Recovering from a devastating car-crash, Emily discovers that she has been bequeathed a country house by a woman she has never met. This revelation is just the tip of the ice-berg and Emily goes on to discover family secrets that will change everything she believed about herself and her past.
We Should Hang Out Sometime:
Embarrassingly, a true story. by Josh Dundquist. out 29th jan 2015. Part autobiography, part experiment, Josh Dunquist finds himself still single at the age of 25 and embarks on a mission to find out why. His only relationship experience is limited to his eighth-grade girlfriend, who dumped him less than 24 hours into their romance. So Josh decides to take a step back in time and track down every girl he’s ever tried to date to find out an uncomfortable truth: just what’s wrong with him? They say there’s no science to love, but Josh’s semi-empirical approach says otherwise. Josh’s quirky, endlessly funny and often touching approach to his troubled love life will be familiar to anyone who has ever heard - or said - those dreaded words: “we should hang out sometime.” Stu-Mag | 23

Buying on a budget Dreading hitting the shops to hunt for bargain gifts? We’ve done the leg-work for you – read on for our top tips to shopping on a student budget…
Words: L ucy Barnes
Student discount best friend
is
your
There are the obvious places we know we can flock to get our extra ten per cent free, such as Topshop or ASOS, but you’d be surprised at the vast amount of high-street and online outlets who sympathise with student pockets around this time of year. Places ranging from Accessorize to Apple offer year-long discounts with valid NUS or student cards. The Student Room has a handy list of all places which will be able to lend you a helping hand financially this Christmas. Apps such as Amazon Discount Finder are also useful for sniffing out those discounts hiding somewhere beneath the surface of online shopping. Advertised special offers or deals are often there to distract from the real steals!
Share gift-giving
Get creative
Arranged gift-swapping traditions like Secret Santa are a terrific way to keep everyone happy in halls and student houses. Everyone gets a gift, and everyone’s kept happy by the surprise element of ‘who got who’ as opposed to the superficial ‘who got what’. Just remember to set a budget everyone is happy with – you don’t want some people to feel undervalued just because their ‘giftee’ couldn’t afford the quality of presents that others could. More often than not it’s the case that the lower the budget; the more fun the game!
If you’re a present snob – cover your ears: Recycling and handcrafting presents is completely fine and acceptable. If you have an unwanted gift still lying unopened from last year and you know someone who will appreciate it more, then ignore your tight pocketed guilt and just give it to them. You don’t have to pass money through a shoptill to make a present thoughtful – that is all up to you. Likewise, a hand-picked mixtape will be much more appreciated and personal than any Top 20 full-priced compilation CD, and make much more memorable gifts.
Choose gift recipients wisely There’s nothing worse than splashing out on a gift for someone who then doesn’t return the favour. Cut out the embarrassment and wasted cash by making a strict list of close family and friends who you know would never leave you on the by-lines of their Xmas priorities. If this backfires and you end up on the opposite side of the snubbing - don’t worry! You’re a student, they will understand that you can’t attend to everyone’s gift needs.
Don’t leave everything to the last minute We’ve all heard of the clichéd mad-rush to the petrol station on Christmas Eve, but it doesn’t always have to be this drastic. Prices will go up in most highstreet shops so it’s up to you to beat them to it. By doing this you’ll also save yourself the stress of having to wave goodbye to your weekly allowance all at once, spread out gift buying across the month and you’ll hardly notice the dent being made.

They’re rich is herbs and spices.” The menu also features a favourite Masala Fish dish served with salad, plus a choice of Chikoo’s pizzas including a new ‘double pizza’. “If you’re hungry, you’ve got to try our special double pizza” says Naz.

Sistachic Words : J essica F ogarty
Long-lasting, luxury locks
Fed up of back-combing and using clip-in extensions to give your hair va-va-voom? If you’re looking for a natural looking volume boost, then visit Sistachic for the best in long-lasting, nondamaging weaves. The Handsworth based salon opened its doors in spring this year and the demand has continued to grow. “We’re almost fully booked until 2015” business founder Kim told us. She and her sister Robyn run the salon together, alongside CLAWS @ Sistachic by Meg Taylor and LVL lashes by Amour Beaute. “Initially we just learnt to weave so we could fit the extensions on each other” Kim told us. “But when friends and family saw the finished product, they all wanted to try it too. “We got so busy we gave up our full-time jobs and found a premises.” Sistachic offers free in-salon consultations for anyone wanting to find out more. Kim told us: “We’ll show you exactly how the bonds and weaves are fitted, the colour matching process and talk you through maintenance. “We use our own specialist method of weaving which is unique to us. We don’t use plaits or glues to apply to the hair – just a simple yet effective method of application that is secure, comfortable and easily maintained.” Sistachic use only the finest 100 per cent human Virgin Remy hair weaves to give lovely thick, full and natural appearance that will last in your hair for months. There’s a variety of weave colours to choose from – you have the choice of a full head colour to perfectly match your current shade, or add in highlights, an ombre finish or a brave shade of red, pink, purple or even blue. The fitting process takes around one hour 30 minutes, then all you need is a maintenance check every six to eight weeks to tighten the bonds to
prevent the natural hair from knotting at the root area. If you need any repairs, just call in to the salon – no appointment necessary – and Robyn and Kim will fix for free. Weave prices start from £190 for 14 inches. Maintenance checks cost £35 and removal is £30. If you want to get your beauty fix while at the salon, visit CLAWS @ Sistachic who can create beautiful and unique nail enhancements, whilst always ensuring your natural nails stay healthy. Treatment prices start from £13. Amour Beaute, also located in the salon, offer LVL lashes with immediate results. They’re a more cost effective and lower maintenance alternative to eyelash extensions – lasting up to six weeks for £45. For a limited time over the festive season and New Year, Sistachic also have an in-salon make-up artist offering MAC application. Whether it’s a treat for yourself or someone special this Christmas, book in now for your hair and beauty fix. Gift vouchers are also available. f f The Lazy fk f k Christmas Workout Guide
k
Wor d s: M ega n W r igh t
k
We all like to relax over Christmas and indulge in chocolate and lavish roast dinners. It’s great to have a break to treat yourself, but it’s also tempting to gorge in excess and become a couch potato during the cold month of December. Here’s a simple workout guide that shows you exercising over Christmas doesn’t have to be boring or tiresome. You don’t even have to quit those festive treats!
Mak e the most o f b eing around youn g family members If you have a younger sibling, cousin, or even a little niece or nephew coming to stay over the Christmas period, make the most of running around after them! It seems obvious, but offering to watch them for a few hours is likely to have you breaking out into a sweat. If they receive a scooter, bicycle, skateboard, or even a Nintendo Wii for Christmas, join in on the fun too. You could even make a family competition out of it – everyone would like to see their granddads trying to ski on a Wii Fit board, right?
D o yo u r C h r istm as s h o p p i ng t h e t rad i t i o nal way Ditch the online shopping and head out into town; not only can you soak up the festive atmosphere, but carrying all those presents will give you a workout without you even thinking about it.
Kee p da n cin g Christmas is the best time of year for parties, and that means plenty of dancing. Anything that keeps you active over Christmas is great, and dancing combines a fun aspect too.
Ex e r cise i n f ro nt of the T V Who said watching all the best Christmas television has to be done from the comforts of the sofa? We all enjoy the communal feeling of Christmas and being with our family and friends, and exercise doesn’t have to be something you do alone in your room or at the gym. If you have weights or an exercise ball, take them into the living room and do a gentle workout. Even if you don’t have any equipment, sit ups and crunches are an easy exercise to do wherever you are. The background noise of the TV will keep you distracted too – you’ll lose count of all those reps you’re doing!
Go for a long walk wi t h yo u r f r ie nd s o r fami ly It’s all too tempting to descend on the sofa after your Christmas dinner and reach for the nearest box of chocolates. It’s fine to do that – but why not go for a walk first? Round up your family or friends, put on your winter woollies and head out. A walk acts as a revitalising break away from the house and gives you the chance to grab some fresh air. You could incorporate a scenic route into your stroll – who knows, it might even snow! The Ramblers’ Association has a nationwide programme of over 300 walks between Boxing Day and January 3rd that you could check out. If you’re up for it you could go for a quick run, even for fifteen minutes. It might seem like a bad idea initially if it’s freezing, but you will soon warm up and it will immediately improve your mood. Whether it’s a walk or run, a trip outdoors will help you beat the bloat and you can indulge in pudding with a guilt-free conscience. 46 | Stu-Mag

Gaming
Games reviewed by the student mag’s resident web designer Gary Thirtle.
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
This War of Mine
8/10
9/ 10 Available on: PC, PS4, PS Vita
Available on PC
Being an avid Binding of Isaac fan, and having played the original game far longer than any human being ever should to keep his or her sanity, I was initially skeptical of this release. Why in the world would I pay £10 for a game that I already owned? Yet within the first hour of playing, I was completely hooked, unable to break from the screen in my conquest to discover as many new items as I could.
Having been a fan of survival-sandbox games even before they became an official genre, I have always fancied the idea of a post-apocalyptic hardcore survival game where decisions mattered. I often found myself looking towards The Walking Dead as a fix, since it gave me at least half of what I was craving, and even in games like Project Zomboid and State of Decay I found they were lacking everything I was looking for.
My only complaint is that of the larger rooms. Although it’s a great concept, it was not exercised in the way I had hoped. The overhead view moves along with Isaac’s every turn, making enemies hard to hide and creating a nauseating feeling. This could easily be patched, but as it is, the larger rooms are something I dread solely because of the headache I always seem to get while clearing them. Apart from the room issue, there are also a couple graphical and audio issues that make the game ever so slightly frustrating.
TWoM, however, gives me what I wanted and more. While it is not in fact post-apocalyptic, it is a game which pioneers in a whole new theme: War. In my experience as a gamer, I have only ever stumbled upon survival games which either take place in the untamed wilderness, the ruins of a world ravaged by zombies, or as far back as the middle ages to the unknown future ahead of us.
So here’s what I’ve got out of my hours of gameplay accumulated: The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is an extremely satisfying re-imagining of the previous game. It’s got more than enough to keep an old player interested, and will absolutely entice new players looking for a rouge-like adventure that’s actually fun to die in. It’s a cleaner, more balanced version of the original, with enough to set it apart as its own game without completely abandoning the level of fun that made the first so great. It’s more balanced, more bizarre, and ultimately a rewarding purchase that I recommend with full support 9/10.
48 | Stu-Mag
TWoM does a very good job at throwing your emotions into the mix, often pitting you against your own morals to make ends meet (it sure as hell did for me). In fact, my paranoia drove me to murder two innocent families, both of which included at least one elderly person in poor health that begged I let them go, to fetch supplies I thought I desperately needed (but in the end found out were unnecessary for my survival). That brings up another point: Unlike all other survival games I have played, there is an actual end-game goal to TWoM: You can survive the war. But it’s not all that peachy, as the epilogue will find a way to make you feel just as bad for your characters as you did before (often sad stories of their lives following the war) and giving you a sometimes painful recap of what decisions you’ve made, negative or positive.

We love the simple concept, just sit, take, eat and pay – the empties are counted at the end of the meal for the bill. We take a Miso Soup and some Edamame beans as appetisers while we browse the menu. The 54 | Stu-Mag
soup is a soy bean broth with seaweed, tofu and spring onion. We’re happy to hear refills are unlimited for no extra cost. The soy beans are seasoned in Cornish sea salt – just squeeze, suck then discard the pod. It’s a flavoursome start. Peek over the conveyor belt and you’ll see the team of chefs preparing the dishes – mostly sushi and side dishes circulate the restaurant on the conveyor belt so if there’s something specific that catches your eye on the menu then press a button and a waiter will come take your order. There’s also a button for unlimited still water and another for sparkling water. We’re impressed with the modcons. New dishes to the menu include: Oishii Buns – soft white rolls filled with your choice of filling – Hoisin Duck, Spicy Beef, Kimchee Salmon or Mushroom; plus a new selection of sashimi dishes – slices of premium raw fish and Takoyaki – battered octopus balls. I press my buzzer and opt for one of each. In around five minutes my Tuna Tataki and Ponzu Sashimi arrives – five slices of peppered seared Yellowfin tuna with chilli daikon and crispy shallots. Heavenly. A few minutes later my octopus balls and duck roll arrive together – I don’t know where to start. The battered octopus balls are seasoned with mayonnaise, red ginger, bonito flakes, aonori (Seaweed powder) and fruity katsu sauce. I decide these are an acquired taste yet I still manage to polish them off. I saved the best while last. Filled with shredder roast duck and topped with hoisin sauce, spring
onions coriander and white sesame seeds – the Oishii Bun is my overall favourite. Room for dessert? We recommend you try the Banana and Chocolate Harumaki – a banana filled spring roll with a side strawberry and chocolate sauce. Naughty but nice. The Meadowhall restaurant has a relaxed, informal atmosphere and the friendly and knowledgeable team give diners a warm welcome. We’ll be back again soon! Simply sign up to the free Yo! TURKEY AND ALL THE TRIMMINGS T h e St u de n t g uid e to co o k i n g C h r istmas dinner… Wor d s: Luc y Ba r nes
I
t’ s f inally time! You’ ve had your tinsel up a month too early, exchanged your budget gifts an d eaten all your adven t calendar ch ocol ates in a h ung-ove r stupor. Th er e’ s only one th in g left to do, an d t h at’s at tempt to actually cook, lik e a real adult, a C h ristmas Di nner. Here a re five simple steps to get you on you r way...
Use more than one kitchen There’s no chance of food for 12 people fitting into an oven meant for 4. If you’re in halls and cooking for more people than your facilities cater for, then ask around friends from other flats if they’ll mind you sticking a dish or two into theirs. You could even do a joint dinner and share cooking responsibilities by agreeing on who will bring what. The most important thing with this is knowing exactly what is where and what needs to come out at what time, but don’t panic! Don’t lose your head and you won’t lose the turkey.
56 | Stu-Mag
Budget
Don’t be over-ambitious
Your student Christmas dinner probably isn’t going to bare much resemblance to the one your family has spent years perfecting, so don’t resign yourself to shopping in the same places that you usually would. So long as you shop around for the best deals and make sure everyone agrees to put-to, you won’t go wrong. If you and your friends aren’t the most domestic group, then there are plenty of cheap pubs like Wetherspoons, The Cavendish and Nottingham House with its infamous ‘Christmas dinner pie’ – all available for your no-fuss alternative without breaking the bank. Just remember to book in advance!
Unless you’re willing to do a practice run before the real thing, stick to shop-bought for all trimmings. Though they may seem like nice touches at the time, festive extras like pigs in blankets, homemade cranberry sauce and huge turkeys will only be a pain when it comes to cooking and cleaning up, and even more of a pain to get rid of any excess. The last thing you want is a sink full of charred pans and a fridge full of turkey that won’t get eaten.
Prepare in advance If you’re confined to one kitchen, then make small tactical preparations like peeling vegetables and potatoes the night before, making sure the turkey is ready go in FIRST, and cooking non-meat essentials early then reheating them nearer the time.
All hands on deck Even if you can’t lend any cooking expertise to the occasion, this doesn’t mean you should just take a back seat and let everyone else take the reins – there’s plenty of parsnip chopping, sprout peeling, potato mashing and gravy making to keep everyone busy. By chipping-in and helping with the preparation you’ll be able to take some credit for happy tummies, and most importantly, your food will be cooked quicker!

Bank Street Arts Words : J essica B easley
Bank Street Arts is fast-becoming the artistic hub of Sheffield – a place where creatives, artists, writers and dreamers all gather. Its vast ceilings, echoing corridors and extraordinary exhibitions practically throb with creativity and are sure to entice some inspiration out of you. Bank Street Writers was founded in 2012 with a vision of becoming something great and nearly three years on they are still continuing to grow as writers and as a group. It was originally aimed at those too old for young writer's groups, but too young for "Mum's book group" – but they welcome all age groups and pride themselves in the diversity of their members. Brilliantly bright, friendly, fun, informal and yet informative, Bank Street Writers is perfect for writers regardless of where they are on their writing journey. Whether you've never put pen to paper before or are a published writer, you are bound to find a home at Bank Street. Writing sessions are typically structured around a series of writing exercises run by one of the members – covering everything from plot-writing to flash fiction and poetry. The second half of the meeting involves giving detailed feedback on a writing submission that has been circulated via email beforehand. A welcoming cup of tea, a mountain of biscuits and a good old natter are also part of their easy-going ethos. Bank Street Arts is also the new home of Writing 58 | Stu-Mag
Yorkshire and they have recently launched a cosy writing studio, full of squashy sofas, brilliant writing resources and an endless supply of tea and coffee. So whether you're a script-writer that spends their lunch breaks imagining staging set-ups, a novelist who thinks you're carrying the next big thing around in your head, or if you simply want to have fun trying out different writing styles, Bank Street Writers will provide you with a friendly, motivating and encouraging environment of likeminded people. The next meeting is Thursday 11th December and every alternate Thursday thereafter. If you think Bank Street Writers sounds like just the thing you've been looking for, contact them on writingbankstreet@gmail.com.

WE’RE LOVING IT Sheffield Univeristy student creates burger for McDonald’s menu Words : J essica F ogarty
A burger designed by University of Sheffield student Luke Watson is to go on sale across 1,200 UK McDonald’s restaurants after it won over the judging panel in a national competition. Luke’s Big Spicy Bacon Burger was one of five winning creations from McDonald’s My Burger competition, which challenged food-lovers to create a customised burger using a beef patty combined with a choice of more than 80 ingredients. The 11 most popular burgers were tasted by an expert judging panel, which included England rugby legend and Celebrity MasterChef winner Phil Vickery, and Mark Hawthorne, managing director of McDonald’s UK.
STUDENTS TOP ATTRACTION FOR CRIMBO CRIME Words : J essica F ogarty
Student halls of residence, student houses and students generally can be a top attraction for would-be burglars or thieves – especially around the festive period. And it’s easy to see why. Students own more expensive
consumer goods per head than the rest of the population. They have laptops, mobile phones, i-pods, televisions and often walk around with some of this electronic gadgetry making their way to and from the library and university campus.
Top Tips
By taking a few simple precautions, you can help to make sure you don't become a victim. It only takes minimal effort but can save you maximum inconvenience, cash and even injury. It’s all about common sense. • Many burglaries happen when a door or window has been left open – shut doors and windows before you go out and keep valuables out of sight and if possible away from these entry points. • In a private home or flat, lock up whenever you go out, with deadbolts if you have them. Look at installing a burglar alarm. • In a hall of residence, be careful who you let in or who follows
you into the building - lock your bedroom door even if you are only going down the corridor. Only give keys to those living in the accommodation. • Invest in a fireproof safe in which you can store priceless papers and documents. • Robbers are after an easy target – walk in groups at night, travel by taxi or stay over with friends, your safety is worth more than the cab fare home! • If you love it, log it is the message we are sending out to students. Visit www.immobilise. com to log your valuables and increase your chances of getting items back if they are stolen. • Protect yourself with insurance – keep lists of the make, model and serial numbers of your electronic items to help police track them down. • Mark your property with the initials of your university and your student ID number - this makes it harder for a burglar to sell stolen goods and can help the police to return items to you. Focus on Fees Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has recently been pleading with voters to ignore his party’s disastrous U-turn on tuition fees after the last general election. He has been on the offensive, claiming that all the other parties have been dealing in fear and blame while the Lib Dems were the party of the ‘head and the heart’. It had looked bright for them heading into the last election in 2010. Clegg performed admirably in the media and in debates and was starting to look like a real alternative to the domination of the other two parties. Unfortunately this promise didn’t translate into success on polling day, as they picked up just 23% of the vote, which actually equated to a loss of 5 seats. In an attempt to perform better next year they have encouraged voters to concentrate on their successes, such as the pursuit of LGBT rights, rather than their failures.
64 | Stu-Mag
Students will graduate with an average debt of £44,035 according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies
73% of those students will not repay that debt in full.
As of September 2014 the maximum grant that can be awarded is £3,387 per year
So I ventured out into the wind and rain to loiter near the universities and find out what some of the local student population really thought of Sheffield’s not-so-favourite son, and if they might be prepared to overlook the tuition fees controversy. Mature student Simon Oldfield, in his third-year of a degree in The Built Environment at Sheffield Hallam, said: “What did he have to lose by at least publicly standing ground? Right now he’ll openly criticise the Conservatives because they’re trying to win the next election- a little bit of that criticism up front might have won him the support of the people. The fees are relatable to what you earn. It wasn’t a good enough reason not to go forward and study. But it wasn’t responsible of the Liberal Democrats to ever make the claim that fees could be abolished, as we were going through the economic crisis.
There isn’t enough money in the budget of Student Finance England because of the amount of people that have turned to education because of the recession.” Nick Mason, a part-time IT student at Sheffield Uni, was equally scathing: “When the Liberal Democrats promised to scrap tuition fees they pretty much won me over. I feel the U-turn they made was something I couldn’t ignore as it was my reason for voting Lib Dem. “Due to the increase in tuition fees my university is scrapping part time courses as numbers of people enrolling have dwindled because they can’t afford it. I am very lucky to have enrolled when I did otherwise the opportunity for me to study would simply not be there. “I would be weary about voting for a party who promised to scrap tuition fees in the future. In some ways it has put me off voting completely. I don’t feel
or they are written off after 30 years
More than half of universities in England and Wales charge the maximum £9000 per year for home students some however, charge just £6000.
any hometown allegiance to Nick Clegg- it was his ‘promises’ that won me over initially.” Medhia Afzal and Jessye Sadler, both 19 year-old biomedical science students at Sheffield Uni, said of the fees: “It doesn’t really affect us at the moment because we can still get loans and stuff. I think we’ll feel it when we’re older. It’s a bit unrealistic to say no fees at all.” With regards to Clegg’s recent pleas, they added: “It’s hard to ignore something when it’s the biggest thing that affected us.” It wasn’t a clean slate of criticism however. Ben Talkowski, 27, a second-year Games Software Development student at Sheffield Hallam, said: “I feel tuition fees are part and parcel of a quality education, and when you do the maths the deal is not as bad as it seems. I actually decided to go to University after seeing the proposed tuition fee changes. It was refreshing to see a political
Loan repayments only begin once the graduate is earning over £21,000
party hold their hands up and admit a mistake instead of trying to blame other parties.” Of course the students’ views cannot claim to be representative of opinions as a whole. They are just a snapshot. But they are a random snapshot - and that makes them worth listening to. A Liberal Democrat spokesperson said in response: “The Liberal Democrats recognise that we couldn't deliver our policy on tuition fees - and Nick has apologised for this. The truth is both Labour and the Conservatives supported higher fees. As we did not win the General Election, we were unable to carry out our promise without the backing from either of the two other parties. “Although that's no excuse, we are proud that we made sure the system was as fair as possible. No student pays up front and they only pay back once they're earning over £21,000. “And we're already seeing positive results, with more
young people going to university and more of them from disadvantaged backgrounds thanks to the safeguards we put in place.” Fine sentiment but the reality is that Clegg (perhaps unfairly) took a lot of flack for changing his stance. I say perhaps unfairly because you have to wonder just how much influence the smaller half of a coalition really has. They are swamped by the Conservatives, and have now even fallen behind the Greens in opinion polls. They seem to have lost their identity. The general message of the Lib Dem conference last month seemed to be: “Remember us? We’re still here!” Maybe the main issue facing them though could be that voters will actually remember too well. “Hold onto me,” Drake yelled as he started driving and the engine roared. “What?” I shouted, but before I had a chance to say anything I was thrown back into my seat with a powerful push. I scrambled around on the seat and tried to recompose myself. Drake threw his head back, laughing deeply. “You make me laugh, Gisele.” He motioned for me to come to him, and so, holding on for dear life, the wind whipping my hair all over the place, I slowly crawled across the boat that was breaking through the water at an alarming speed. Drake grabbed my wrist with his strong hands and pulled me onto his lap. He wrapped his arms around me, and carried on driving. “Now sit back and enjoy,” he whispered in my ear. Knowing I was now safe, I allowed myself to lean back against his warm chest and close my eyes, letting the wind blow my hair into a crazy dance. I embraced the feeling of freedom I felt on this boat and with Drake, who – despite being a total stranger – I felt as though I had known him my whole life. The sea sprayed a mist of cool water on my face and I finally opened my eyes, allowing myself to take in the peaceful surroundings, letting the hum of the boat relax me. Twenty minutes later Drake eventually slowed the boat to a stop. I looked around the stunning scenery that lay before me. I still couldn’t believe he had all this on his doorstep. I had met some rich men in my time but this was something else. A warm afternoon sun shone down on us both and I closed my eyes again, tilted my head to the sun. This just felt right. He kissed the top of my head, “This feels
68 | Stu-Mag
right,” he murmured, echoing my thoughts. I turned round to kiss him on the lips, a long, slow kiss. “It does,” I agreed. I smiled up at him and took in his beauty. He really was a stunning man, quite how someone could look so perfect I don’t know. How is so taken with me? What does he see? My job was to exude confidence around men, make them think I was self-assured and in love with myself, but the reality was very different. “Shall we go back to my place?” he asked. I nod and nestled back into his chest, closing my eyes as he switched on the engine and returned us safely back to his private beach. After helping me off the boat, I waited as he hauled it back inside his garage. “Come on, I want to show you my house,” he panted, ten minutes later, with sweat glistening on his forehead, he put his arm out for me to take grinning from ear to ear. I ran to grab it and he snaked his arm around my waist, making sure he was as close as he could possibly get to me. I was so engrossed in Drake, so taken by his warmth and affection that I didn’t notice the collection of black Maserati’s that had built up in his drive, didn’t feel the eerie silence that had descended. What I did notice was that Drake’s entire body tensed as soon as his gaze landed on his driveway. He immediately pulled away from me and started walking towards the cars. He ran his hands through his hair and down his face, his body visibly sagging. He turned and walked back towards me, his expression grim. “Gisele,” he began, “I need to tell you something.”
DRUGS Stay safe at Christmas!
W
ith Christmas only round the corner, the party season will be coming into full swing. And what normally comes with parties is drugs. There is no doubt that there will be lots of knocking back beer bottles and drunken kisses under the mistletoe. Sometimes over the seasonal period, however, people can try and party too hard and ‘legal highs’ definitely come into this category. ‘Legal highs’ that are genuinely legal contain one or more chemical which can have the same kind of effect on you that ecstasy, cannabis or even cocaine can. These kinds of substances aren’t fully tested and are not yet controlled by the Misuse of Drugs Act 971. It is rarely known how potent these drugs actually are, or the kinds of effects they can have on you, especially when mixed with other substances or alcohol. More ‘legal highs’ are being researched as a lot of the chemicals found in these substances are illegal. You should be aware that ‘legal highs’ can’t be sold for human consumption, so businesses bypass this by selling them as incense, salts or plant foot. What you will often find on these type of products is a list of ingredients, but you can never be fully sure what is really in them. Just because a product has legal in front of it doesn’t mean that it is going to be genuine or safe. You can also never fully be in the know as to the kind of effects it will have on you. Some ‘legal highs’ have been directly linked to mental health issues, poisoning and in some
very rare cases death. Don’t be fooled by the street names that these substances can have either, they are often referred to as ‘A Clockwork Orange’, ‘Bliss’ and ‘Sweet Mary-Jane’. Unless you are the designated driver on one of those rampant night outs or at a mad house party, then it won’t be too much of an issue. But I bet you didn’t know that it is illegal to drive after having ‘legal highs’. The reason being you can put yourself and others at risk. It will be seen in the same light as drink-driving or drug-driving. Everybody loves partying and especially near Christmas when you deserve a break. So just be aware of ‘legal highs’ when they pop up and the negative effects they can have on you. All the information about them is on the FRANK website. Words: Jessica Fogarty

Lucy Barnes
Megan Wright

PC, PS4, PS Vita

Jessica Fogarty
Hudson Taylor?
@HudsonTaylor
