Sounding as she does and citing sinatra as an es influence? Who the hell do ? Meghan Trainor think she is ollowing her global super-smash hit single, ‘All About That Bass’, Meghan Trainor returned to the limelight early 2015 with the release of her second single, ‘Lips Are Movin’. With an unmistakable sound, this track is another tasty slice of her unique contemporary take on doo-wop influenced pop. While the song may be caked in Meghan’s sunny feel-good sentiment, the underlying theme is once again close to many a girl’s heart – calling out promiscuous, unfaithful men. Late January also saw the release of her debut album ‘Title’ – one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2015. It looks like the bubbly American songstress is set to cement her position as the most exciting new pop star on the planet. Student Mag finds out how, in less than a year, Meghan Trainor has gone from being a successful, but relatively unknown songwriter, to being a Grammy nominated global star… At just 21 years old, you must be so proud of

your achievements? For the rest of my life, I’ll be introduced as ‘Grammy nominated Meghan Trainor’. That’s fricking epic. What has been the biggest highlight of the past year? I just had a new one! My birthday was everything. I had an arena of 20,000 people sing Happy Birthday to me ‘cause of Nick Jonas. Who I’m like, the biggest fan of. You’ve also had artists like Beyoncé saying that they’re fans of your music. Yeah, that, that was huge for me! And Michael Bublé did a cover of ‘All About That Bass’ on Instagram. How did you feel about that? I’m obsessed with him. One of my goals in life, like off my bucket list, is make sure Michael Bublé knows I exist and like the fact that he sang my song I died. I saw it on Instagram and I was just, I remember I was lying in bed and I just got up and was like ‘MUM did you see it?’ she

was like ‘I SAW IT, I SAW IT!’. I’ve been to like five concerts maybe, and his was one and I cried. I was like ‘oh he’s so good on track, he’s probably terrible live’. And he was better live. He’s so funny. ‘All About That Bass’ has become a global hit and was #1 here for 4 weeks. Did you have a bit of an inkling that it was going be so successful when you were writing it? We did ‘All About That Bass’ and we shelved it. I was like ‘cool song, whatever. No one’s gonna hear this. No pop star can sing this ‘cause they’re all fricking size zero’s and no one can rap and sing’. So the fact that this was probably my biggest song of life, it was one of those, I had no clue. And what you hear today is what the demo is. No auto tune or nothing, I walked out of the studio and that’s what I heard and that’s what plays every day. Have you been out anywhere and heard your song playing? Yeah, it’s weird. I was home on my island and I went to a sushi place. I walk in and ‘Lips Are Movin’ is playing and five minutes later ‘Bass’ plays, and then ‘Lips’ plays again. And I was just like ‘damn I’m famous. Like it’s real’. Do you remember where you were the first time you heard your song on the radio? Yeah, ‘All About That Bass’. I was with my producer we were in Nashville. And I was just balling – not because it was the first time, but ‘cause it sounded good! And I thought it was gonna sound so bad on the radio, ‘cause distortion but it sounded great! How excited are you to have a duet with John Legend on the album? 12 | Stu-Mag
I produced that! I was very proud of myself and I was like ‘I need one song on here that I’ve produced because I’ve been a producer since 13, give me somethin’! And yeah, I got a lot of crap for putting like ‘Bang Dem Sticks’ and ‘3am’ on there because they’re like, ‘it’s not Doo Wop’ and I was like I don’t care! I’m a songwriter, and these are my favourite songs and I’m a fan of this so I’m gonna put this out. The album was also co-written and produced by Kevin Kadish, who has some amazing songs in his back catalogue. ‘Stuck’ by Stacie Orrico, for one. Ahhh! Listen, I was his biggest fan as a songwriter and he did Jason Mraz too. He did ‘Geek In The Pink’ and he did ‘It’s all about the wordplay’, that one, Dude! So I walked in there trying to be cool and was like… ‘I listen I rap’, he was like ‘okay’, I was like ‘and I like Doo Wop’ he was like ‘cool’, and I was like ‘and I’m not a size two’! And then we wrote about it and we were like ‘do you like it?’ he was like ‘I like it dude’ I like it. But I was such a fan, like to the end of the album I kept telling him ‘I’m still star-struck by you’. It’s crazy and no one gives him enough credit and that’s why this is a big moment for him too like, I’m just so happy he’s on this. It’s just amazing to see his face at these number one parties; it’s just like what the hell. Name your favourite tracks by other artists? Any you wish you’d
have written? ‘Halo’ by Beyoncé. What. A. Song. I was thinking about it this morning like damn, those lyrics. ‘Remember those walls I built, baby they’re tumbling down’. Also ‘Mistletoe’ by Justin Bieber. Thought that was one of the best Christmas songs I’ve ever heard! So, how’s it been, flying around the world and visiting loads of different countries? It’s amazing. It’s one of those things that at 21 years old, I can say I’ve been to Australia, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the UK. And a lot of 21 year olds can’t say that. They can say they’ve studied abroad but in one place. Have you got a favourite country that you’ve visited so far? This ones the prettiest, and I’m not saying that ‘cause you’re here! This one reminds me of Germany
for some reason, my view was exactly the same. But the food in Germany was outstanding. Do you bring any home comforts with you to have on the road? I have a stuffed animal named Paddles that I recently got – It’s a Penguin. He’s kinda famous on Instagram. I bring him everywhere. He’s great. Also, my mums jewellery, ‘cause they can never come with me, but I love
looking at these to remind of them. She designed them and everything, and [points to gold ring, with three jewels] it’s of me and two brothers so it’s like a symbol. Then my father made this one [points to bracelet]. He was a musician forever, and then he was just like ‘I want to be a jeweller’. Your Dad must be very proud of you, especially considering he was a musician. Yeah, he was a band teacher at one point but he has always said ‘make sure whatever job you choose, just be the best at it’, so he’ll always win like ‘the best jeweller on Nantucket’ and then getting the Grammy’s I’m kinda like, best song of the year, best. Did it! What’s next for you? The tour in April. It’s gonna be my year to really get people, let people start to know Meghan Trainor and who she is and what she’s about. And I’m so excited. 2014 was pretty epic… I think 2015, there’ll be more special performances that I haven’t done yet like Saturday Night Live or stuff. Meghan Trainor’s debut album, TITLE, is out now.

Stu-Mag meets singer-songwriter, Lucy Rose, ahead of her second album release and her first UK headline tour which stops-off in Sheffield later this month… Words: Jessica Fogarty e’re excited to welcome you to The Plug, Sheffield, on March 20. What should we expect from your show? I’ll be playing my aptly named track ‘Sheffield’ as well as nine or ten new tracks. I’ll also be standing up on stage for the first time. If you’ve seen me perform before you’ll know that I always sit on a stool and sing with my guitar. But I’m ready to move the stool, stand up on stage and face the audience. How does it feel to be embarking on your own UK headline tour? It’s so exciting. It still takes me by surprise when I see the figures for ticket sales. It’s so surreal that people will pay to see me perform. What should we expect from your second album released (Soft Control on March 9th) later this year? I’ve released a single – ‘Cover Up’ – which indicates the change in direction for this album. It’s very different from my debut album – more electric and lively but the feeling remains. I’ve included a lot of electric guitar and I play piano for the first time. Do you have a favourite performing venue? The smaller the better. I’m pretty creepy. I like to have eye contact with my audience – it helps me connect. I hate it when you can’t see faces in a crowd. I like to pick out each face individually so I love any intimate venue where this can happen. How would you describe your music? Foot tapping beats mostly. Each song describes a different emotion so it’s hard to summarise.

Are you playing any festivals this summer? It’s yet to be confirmed. I’d love to play Glasto, though. If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing? I’d do other things if need be but I’ve never questioned my singing career. I always write a song and see if it gets me anywhere. I don’t take anything for granted because you don’t know how long success will last. Who or what inspires you? Old, classic song writers. People like Carole King and Neil Young. What’s your proudest achievement? I wrote every song on my album. I wanted to take control 100 per cent and I’m really proud of that. What do you get up to when you’re not working? I don’t live a very rock ‘n’ roll life. I walk in the Cotswolds mostly. It’s very boring but that’s what I do. What should we expect from you following the tour and album launch? I’m just waiting to see what happens. After the release of my debut album, I had the opportunity to travel as far as Singapore to perform. I never expected that level of interest outside of the UK. THE ANSWER Raise A Little Hell Release date March 9th, 2015
Northern Irish rockers, The Answer, are set to release their new album Raise a Little Hell worldwide this March. Produced by Spanish producer Guillermo ‘Will’ Maya and recorded in his Madrid studio over summer 2014, the album was also mixed by Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Garbage) in London, winter 2014. Cormac Neeson from the band commented: “We’re delighted to announce our new album Raise A Little Hell. This is a special record that reflects a return to the hard ass blues rock ‘n’ roll we hold so dear. This album truly showcases who we are and the best of The Answer in full flow. We can’t wait for you all to hear it!” The first single from the album is Red and was penned by Nashville writers Neil Mason (The Cadillac
Three) and Tyler Bryant. Red was one of two previously penned songs that The Answer very much wanted to record as part of the Raise A Little Hell album and to give their own unique sound to. The single video will be directed by Darren Lee from Maverick Renegade Productions and features uniquely designed ‘Monster’ costumes created by Belfast based Christine Boyle whose design credits include Game Of Thrones and Universal’s Your Highness. The Answer will embark on a 40 date headline UK and European club tour followed by a series of summer festivals and soon to be announced US tour plans!

Upping The Ante: Wu-Tang Clan and Basement Jaxx are among the new additions to Tramlines 2015
Sheffield’s annual inner-city music festival, Tramlines, is thrilled to announce the first two waves of artists for its 2015 event, which will take place in multiple venues and outdoor spaces across the city from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July. First wave announcements included Buzzcocks, Sugarhill Gang, Melle Mel & Scorpio, Martha Reeves, Dutch Uncles, Slaves, Jagaara, Marika Hackman, Roman Flugel and Blanck Mass, whilst the second wave adds Wu-Tang Clan, Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans, Erol Alkan, Mike Skinner, and Rolo Tomassi (among others). Whilst the Wu-Tang Clan’s appearances can be patchy, we are assured by Tramlines’ PR manager Alex Deadman that we’ll see “all living members” but “no holographic ODB”, which is a shame. Phew. Another stormer, then. Also, for the first time, the main stage will not be on Devonshire Green, but instead will be situated at the much larger Ponderosa in Netherthorpe. The 2015 event comes hot on the heels of Tramlines’ biggest year yet, with performances from Public Enemy, Sister Sledge, The Cribs, Katy B and over 200 other artists having made 2014’s festival a truly unforgettable weekend for 100,000 festival-goers. The early artists announced for Tramlines 2015 point towards another unforgettable weekend in the making, and with it come some true music legends.
Tramlines festival director Sarah Nulty said: “The 2014 lineup was one of our best ever so we knew we’d set the bar high for this year, and we think we’ve done it again with the legendary likes of Buzzcocks and Sugarhill Gang. We pride ourselves on being a ‘discovery’ festival where people can seek out established talent alongside breaking talent and are excited to share more big and brand-new names for the festival.” Tickets for Tramlines 2015 are available from www.tramlines. org.uk and cost just £30 for all three days, making it one of the most competitively priced festivals around. Get Hard out 27th March Funnyman Kevin Hart is charged with the task of preparing comedy giant Will Ferrell for life in jail. Millionaire hedge fund manager James King (Will Ferrell) faces a 10-year stretch in the notorious San Quentin jail for fraud and embezzlement. Fearful of what awaits him behind bars, King turns to car wash boss Darnell Lewis (Kevin Hart) to teach him how to survive life ‘on the inside’. The catch? Ok, so you may be situated in Sheffield’s busiest shopping centre but when you hit play on your personal juke box, you step back in time to the 1950s. We slide in to a retro red leather booth and select some Elvis Presley classics while we browse the menu. Choose from more than ten varieties of hamburger, fried chicken, hotdogs, salads and diner favourites including a pulled pork sub plate, the full Ed’s breakfast or heart-warming beef chilli. If you want to indulge, you’re in for a treat. Dishes are sold ‘solo’ – on their own – or as an ‘Ed’s 28 | Stu-Mag
Plate’ – with fries, onion, rings and coleslaw. The chefs are certainly not shy with their portions. Our order of the Ed’s Plate Big Bubba bacon ‘n’ cheese is more than enough for a small elephant. The burger is made from fully traceable Farm Assured beef and grilled to perfection in Ed’s famous toasted sesame seed bun they’ve been serving since 1987. But if you’re not happy about using your entire daily calorie allowance in one meal, then you’ll be happy to hear there are some female-friendly, calorieconscious choices on there too. Choose from Skinny Ed’s – any of the hamburgers served with salad, vinaigrette and no bun;
veggie burgers; grilled chicken and salads. We opt for the chicken Dijon salad – a deep bowl of chicken breast goujons and bacon bits on a bed of romaine lettuce with a honey and mustard dressing. Rustic CHarm @ Kaffihús Words: Jessica Fogarty We’re welcomed with the smell of freshly brewed coffee and a big friendly smile from the waiter who waves us over. He points above his head to the hand written menu which features a selection of tempting sandwich fillings, a daily special of home-made soup, the seasonal dish of the day – maple pancake stack – as well as more than ten blends of tea and fairtrade coffees. The whole menu sounds delicious but we’re immediately distracted by the choice of cakes and pastries sitting right in front of us on the counter. We manage to retain some self-control and order a main course first. We go for the New York sandwich (£2.80) – a towering filling of pastrami, smoked ham, gherkins, emmental cheese with
mayo and mustard between two chunky slabs of fresh bread – and the seasoned scrambled eggs on seeded bread (£3.90) with two skinny lattes (£4.40). Plentiful portions of good quality grub at very reasonable prices. Almost every seat in the café is taken with a mix of friends and couples – a group of students budge up on the sofa to kindly make room for us. We’re friendly us Sheffield folk, aren’t we? The café has a chilled vibe – a mix of comfy sofas and tables fill the cosy room – decorated with work by local artists and overhanging bunting. We love the shabby chic look.

Located within the creative courtyard of Haggler’s Corner, the café sits beneath the walls of the antiques centre, yoga studios and workshops of local artists and craftsmen – not to mention a certain rival magazine. Kaffihus is open seven days per week from 10am-5pm with free Wifi. It’s the ideal stop-off for a working lunch or take advantage of the delivery service and have your lunch brought to you if you’re local. Outdoor catering is also available plus the hire of the function room at Hagglers Corner.

Stu Mag meets YouTube sensation, Fleur De Force, to find out more about the success of her blog and ‘must-have’ lifestyle bible… eauty and fashion YouTube Sensation, Fleur De Force, stopped off in Sheffield during February to launch her debut book ‘Glam Guide’. There was no surprise that dozens of fans from all over Yorkshire flocked to the signing in WH Smith, Meadowhall; Fleur is one of the country’s most noteworthy vloggers (video bloggers), she has 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube, 435,000 followers on Instagram and 200,000 followers on Twitter. How did the idea of beauty blogging and vlogging begin for you? I had been watching other YouTube channels and reading blogs for about 6 months before I started my own, so I really discovered it through being a fan of what other people were doing and wanted to try it out for myself! Any dos and don’ts for budding bloggers and vloggers? I always say the most important thing is to be yourself, especially when it comes to YouTube as it really shows on camera. Other than that, just go for it! I think people always make excuses as to why they don’t start a blog or YouTube, but the quickest way to find out 34 | Stu-Mag

Getting the Tang of it NAME: JULIANNA TANG AGE: 22 OCCUPATION: FURNITURE DESIGNER
hen did you first decide you wanted to go into Furniture Design? It was back in 2009. My cousin worked for Godfrey Phillips, a cigarette company that’s popular in India and Hong Kong, and told me they were holding a competition to design their packaging. I sent a few designs and although they weren’t used, the feedback I received taught me the importance that design can have in attaching value to an everyday item. A degree in Furniture Design was perfect because it combines creative design with hands-on skills, like joinery. Why Sheffield? I went to a universities fair in London and was struck by the work Sheffield Hallam students had produced. I then fell in love with the city when I visited on the open day. I’m not a big city person so Sheffield is ideal in that it has lots going on, and yet you’re no more than half an hour away from the countryside. Did you enjoy your time studying in Sheffield? Absolutely. The course really pushes the boundaries and makes you think about all the possibilities

within furniture design: I’ve made dining tables that double up as stools, multi-functional shelves, touch sensitive door handles and a floating desk!

Is there any piece of work that you are particularly proud of? Definitely ‘Charles’ - the floating desk. We received a brief from M Y Fathers Heart, off Abbeydale Road, to design a piece for young professionals. The desk combines traditional values with modern contemporary design and is small so can fit in apartments or flats. Plus it looks pretty cool. I’m also proud of my ‘Peak’ chair, which creates a personal space for when you want to withdraw from a busy environment; the ideal product for any student.
What would you tell students who are thinking of a career in Furniture Design? You have to be a good listener. In order to know what a client wants, you need to understand them on a personal level. And then be able to advise them on what will work best for them. You also need to have a genuine interest in the use of space. Even when I’m out in town I’ll be analysing buildings and products. I’m always walking into houses or offices and think ‘are they using this space to the best of its ability?’.

What advice would you give those studying now? Follow your own instinct. I have one regret from uni, and that’s following my tutors’ advice when I should have done what I thought was right. It resulted in a good mark but I wasn’t totally happy with the end product. Grades are important, but they’re not the be all
Now that you’ve graduated, what’s next for you? The dream is to have my own Furniture Design company. Obviously there’s a long road ahead before I am able to do that. But as long as I’m working in an position whereby I can use the skills I learnt at university I’ll be happy. Stu-Mag | 37

he Society of Independent Brewers’ (SIBA) BeerX festival is rolling back into iceSheffield for its third year on 20th and 21st March - and it’s once again packed to the rafters with live music, street food, big screen rugby and, of course, beer. And not just any beer. Festival-goers can sample from over 250 UK regional award-winning beers, which will have been judged at SIBA’s national beer awards earlier in the week. Beer will be dispensed from temperature-controlled mobile cellars and served from around 80 hand-pulls and keg fonts on BeerX’s purpose-built 30 metre bar. There’s even a bottle bar too. The beginning of BeerX’s week-long event will once again combine a trade exhibition, seminars, keynote speakers and the annual beer and business awards for SIBA members, which will be hosted by BBC Radio 2’s Nigel Barden. The event will then open its doors to the public to present the Festival of Beer taking place on the Friday and Saturday. The festival gives members of the public the unique opportunity to join Britain’s brewers at an event tied closely to the industry, and sample around 250 of their award-winning beers as well as enjoying a variety of entertainment and a diverse street food court.members and the Armed Forces. Hip hop can be under represented round these parts. It was nice to see PE at last year’s Tramlines, certainly, and Blackalicious rocking up last month was a treat, no doubt. Having to travel to go see De La Soul and The Pharcyde last year rankled a little, but there are probably things I’d miss about Sheffield were I to leave*. Anyway, Four Owls are a UK hip hop supergroup, of sorts, consisting of 2/3 of 3 Amigos, Fliptrix, and the busiest man in UK hip hop, Verb T. Resident Evil has always had a place close to my heart. I’ve always loved games, but this was THE game that made me realise that games were growing up alongside me. And nearly 20 years later, it is re-released again. Based on the Gamecube remake of the original, this is a love letter to all the fans of the series that have felt let down by the recent instalments. The dialogue is still hammy although sadly they have got rid of some of the best lines; “master of unlocking” and “Jill sandwich” being notably absent. There is an option to use the old tank controls, but a new scheme has been implemented where all movement responds to the direction of the L stick. This can be confusing, due in part to the fixed camera angles, but makes running around zombies a lot easier. It is great that this version has made it to other consoles finally, but it does feel like Capcom are trying to feed nostalgia to boost sales of future, lesser products. What it does is serve as a reminder to how a well-paced, genuinely terrifying experience they were once capable of has been watered down into generic, cover based shooting and needless pandering to the online multiplayer crowd. Definitely worth revisiting though, it also reminds you of how easy newer games have become. Haven’t saved in three hours? You will be punished when you die. Used all your shotgun shells on zombies? Having seen light of day on various platforms (iOS, Android, XBLIG), and in various instalments (an episode here and there), Decay The Mare sees light of day on PC, proudly offering a slightly re-jigged experience and the first opportunity to plough through the whole shebang in one sitting. At its heart, DTM is a point and click affair, with one eye firmly on the macabre. And by ‘macabre’, I mean ‘Silent Hill-style spooks and scares aplenty’. Or, at least, it would be, were the visuals more than simple minimally animated static screens. The odd light flickering here, the occasional blinking portrait there; it’s forgivable, once you factor in its mobile roots and bargain basement price tag, but it can sometimes grate. Surrounding ourselves with high-end kit, as we do here in the Stu-Mag office, we have become accustomed to a certain calibre of aesthetics. Pretty, shiny. Still, saying that, it achieves what it’s setting out to do. There are some truly unsettling moments during the course of the game, and—with some kind of cash injection—developers Shining Gate could well do some lasting psychological damage in future. Where DTM does excel, though, is in its puzzling throughout. Ranging from simple Resident Evil-style fare, through to some high end, point and click head-scratchers, there’s plenty here to enjoy within the confines of the genre, and fans will lap this up. Sadly, less time has been afforded on the postproduction, which rankles in its less than shiny finish. Grammatical errors, and moochy music, all conspire to pull the rug out from the good feelings built up by its competencies elsewhere, and you’re left wondering if it’d killed them to have drafted in a graphic designer. Swiss typefaces have their place, and it is not beneath the horror umbrella. Worth a punt, if you’ve got a Sunday afternoon to kill, but don’t run home too fast to play it. Words: Hal Walker

Whilst there are wildly differing reports on its performance, if you do some cursory web investigation, we’re really happy with it. Hail Hydra.

Are young people exposed enough to the issue? Sheffield student, Sharney Warren, shares her own personal experience of Dementia…
nyone who’s witnessed a loved one’s descent into Dementia will know how heartbreaking it is. Young people like myself aren’t shown the dangers and consequences that Dementia causes, and this is why I feel the need to write this article to show young people like myself, that it is important to be “in the know” and to show other young students and teenagers out there that have been affected by the disease that, you are not alone. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by certain diseases such as strokes, the most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. The symptoms that someone

with dementia will experience is unique in different ways to who it effects, especially within the early stages. According to Alzheimer’s Society, it mainly affects people over the age of 65, 1 in 14 people of this age group have dementia and it’s predicted that 850,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with dementia this year. However there are more than 40,000 people in the UK that are under 65 living with dementia. If these current trends continue to proceed and no action is taken, the number could possibly rise to 1,142,677 by 2025. Sadly, there is no current cure for the disease, however there is a range of support, therapies and activities that can
help someone live well with dementia. When my granddad, John, was diagnosed in his late 50’s, it was a hard time for my family. I’d spent years doing my own thing and wasn’t in contact with my granddad for a long time thinking that we’d have lots of time to get to know one another properly later on in life. Yet I was wrong, after my grandmother suddenly passed, my granddad became worse with his condition, and eventually he was put into a care home that specialises within dementia.
They don’t tell you how to deal with your grandfather attempting to throw punches at people Due to his diagnosis of dementia and cases of several strokes, we began to see one another more frequently each week three years before my grandmother passed away and it was definitely precious time worth spent. Although I was spending more time with my granddad before things got worse; I started to pick up on his
certain habits of him struggling to recall certain events that were happening at the time and problems concentrating or making decisions. After months of doctor’s appointments we were finally left with a diagnosis and an information leaflet to support us. Although it was supportive in its own ways, it wasn’t supportive with the strain, time and effort that my mum and dad would be spending to care for my granddad after my grandmother passed. As my granddad’s condition progressed, I began to realise that, despite all the meetings with councillors and the consultations that I witnessed, nobody tells you the reality of this pure evil disease. They don’t tell you how to deal with your grandfather attempting to throw punches at people, neither do they tell you how to deal with that on a day to day basis to the shop for the morning newspaper that he thinks he can just walk out and not pay for anything. Nobody tells you how to tell the shop owners and make them understand that my granddad has got dementia and aren’t encountering a frail thug of a shoplifter. They don’t tell you how to deal with the crushing realisation that my granddad had forgotten that

he even has an illness and thinks that you’re putting him in a home for the sake of it and asks if you even love him anymore. They don’t tell you that they will soon forget your name, and even who you are. Nobody tells you how to channel your anger when teenagers my age are living their lives with healthy grades, a social life, and have proper telephone conversations with their healthy grandparents, and yours resolves around a terminally ill, confused gentleman that worked hard all of his life and now can’t remember how to communicate in any way possible. They don’t tell you that once he’s near the final stage that you will sit with him hours on end trying to tell him things like you’ve passed your driving test and have finally been offered a place at university, to just give you the last hope of making him proud. Dementia stole the time that my parents, family, myself and friends were supposed to have with my grandfather John and I strongly think that the majority of young people in the UK aren’t aware enough of the disease and this is a real problem for the future. People need to be aware that in the UK we are not prepared to cater for everyone with dementia in care homes and hospitals, people need to be aware that it might happen to a loved one, people need to be aware of the confused lady or man walking past them that might need some help in one way or another. Alzheimer’s society and Dementia Friends can help you support and understand a bit more about the incurable disease and the small things you can do to help people with the condition. Whether that be

helping someone find the right bus or being patient in a till queue if someone with dementia is taking longer to pay. All these little things helps someone’s life affected in some way. Due to the recent study that has cropped up to find that dementia may be ‘linked’ to common over the counter drugs for conditions such as insomnia and hay fever. It’s important that the UK acts as a community, to spot signs of dementia and to make sure us young people know the ins and outs of the disease. Want to help? There’s so many things you can do, to get involved and be a part of something that is something close to your heart, to be involved as a community, to support friends, family or even a colleague. No matter what your reason is, everyone is welcome to become a part of the charity.
People need to be aware that in the UK we are not prepared to cater for everyone with dementia Last year I got involved with the memory walk at Rother Valley Country Park in Sheffield and raised over £200, this makes a massive difference to the organisation and can help fund anything from a patient having an arts class at their local care home to helping with travel or to be involved within an activity. Here’s some top tips to get you to jump on the bandwagon and make a difference: -Creating fundraising events
within your local community or even spreading the word through uni life/societies and even in relation to uni work could make a great difference, either to create an opinion from another, express your experiences to others or to just generally make a difference for the future. -Alzheimer’s Society hold fundraising memory walks each year all around the country. Last year over 33,000 walkers took part and together raised £1.8 million towards the fight against dementia. -Get involved and become a volunteer: This might look good on your CV, but it can help someone a long way too. If you have a lot of spare time on your hands and want to help out instead of bingeing on a Netflix marathon, this could be a great cause to help someone. -Talk to your Students’ Union:

There are millions of stories of office romances, people speak of the thrill and the excitement of keeping a secret in the office, and sneaking off together to have a moment alone. However, I learnt the hard way that these romances can end in tears. I had been working in my new job for 6 months when I met Ryan (name changed). At the time I had just come out of a long term relationship that had ended badly and was vulnerable. I had low selfesteem and my usual confident self had become shy and reserved. I met Ryan at the water cooler inbetween our offices – it sounds so clichéd but it’s true. My desk was in a position where I could see him approaching the water cooler so I started keeping an eye out and approaching it whenever I saw him coming. He was funny and easy to talk to, he was forever complimenting me and making me smile. I confided in him about my last relationship and his words of encouragement saw my old self slowly returning, there was a spring in my step again. He asked for my number and we began speaking outside of work. One Saturday evening I was heading home from a club and struggling to find a taxi, on a whim I messaged Ryan to see he was available to pick me up and 20 minutes later he was 52 | Stu-Mag
there. He drove me home and when he stopped outside my house we kissed, I felt so alive. He woke up the next morning and messaged me saying he couldn’t believe his luck, I was shocked – he hadn’t regretted it either. The following week in work I was a bag of nerves, every time I saw him around the office I turned the darkest shade of red and walked in the opposite direction. I felt like everybody knew what I had done. Ryan was a sweetheart, he would leave me presents hidden around the office, little notes in cupboards, or some cake in the fridge. We would book a meeting room and just sit, staring at each other, trying hard not to come too close. A couple of weeks later he dropped a bombshell: he had a girlfriend. My heart broke, I couldn’t understand why he hadn’t told me sooner, I felt so betrayed. He assured me he was going to leave her and I naively believed him. We carried on our affair which felt even more elicit now. People began to talk. We would drive into work together, have lunch together, be at each other’s desks all the time, but we didn’t care. We were floating somewhere way above cloud nine, I hadn’t felt this happy in a long time. His birthday was in May, I desperately wanted to buy him a present but knew there
was no way he could keep it, so I settled on a card. I wrote in it the lyrics from ‘our’ song, ‘Where would we be now, if we found each other first?’ We started spending evenings and weekends together, I couldn’t get enough of him. But then, it all came crashing down. His girlfriend found the card I had written him and tracked me down. He became closed and shut himself off from me, I couldn’t get through to him anymore. All of the sudden he wasn’t the Ryan I had grown to love, he was a complete stranger. Eventually his relationship with his girlfriend broke down, but so did ours, it just wasn’t the same anymore. At the same time I was promoted to a new role in his team. I now had to sit 3 rows away from him. Where once this idea would have filled me with glee it now tormented me on a daily basis. He acted as though I didn’t exist, avoiding eye contact at any opportunity, it made me feel low and invisible. How do you get over someone when you have to see them on a daily basis? I suddenly understood why my colleagues warned that office romances were a bad idea. When the fairytale romance comes crashing down to reality you are left with the daily torture of facing the one you once loved who no longer loves you back.

University of Sheffield research: new ovarian cancer drug one step closer Words: Jessica Fogarty
Ovarian cancer patients throughout Europe and the United States could soon be treated with a new drug discovered through pioneering research at the University of Sheffield funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research. Lynparza has become the first of a new class of drugs called PARP inhibitors to be granted approval by the European Commission and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) will now assess the drug to see whether it should become widely available on the NHS, with a decision expected in September 2015. In 2005, Professor Thomas Helleday and his team of researchers at the University of Sheffield demonstrated how PARP inhibitors could be used as a tailored treatment for patients with BRCA2 mutations, which are seen in both hereditary ovarian and breast cancer. The discovery was patent protected and licensed to pharmaceutical company Astra-Zeneca who 56 | Stu-Mag
continued the development process and undertook successful clinical trials. Professor Helleday said: “I am delighted that after all the hard work carried out since 2005 when we made the original discovery, Lynparza has now been licenced by the European Commission and the FDA. 150,000 women in the European Union suffer from ovarian cancer. Last year, 21,980 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the United States. Many of these patients will benefit from this new therapy. “This could not have been achieved without the support of Yorkshire Cancer Research and the University of Sheffield. It is a fantastic example of academic institutions and charities collaborating to fund pioneering research.” Dr Helen Bryant, from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Oncology and lead author of the research paper that was published in journal Nature in 2005, added: “The fundamental science idea and innovation came from Sheffield and has been taken
forward to become a world first in this type of therapy, offering hope for patients worldwide. “This type of innovation in basic research has increased the visibility of cancer research in Yorkshire and attracted other world leading researchers to the area. It shows what funding novel laboratory ideas at the grass roots level can do to change the treatment options available to patients.” PARP inhibitors work by blocking the cancer cell’s ability to repair damage. Healthy cells reproduce by dividing DNA into two strands and copying each strand. Before they do this, they repair damage in the DNA using the PARP protein. If PARP is suppressed, normal cells use a second mechanism for DNA repair. Some cancers cannot undergo this second process because they have a mutation in a BRCA gene. These cancer cells rely completely on PARP to fix the damage and so when PARP is suppressed the BRCA mutated cell is unable to grow and eventually dies. Normal cells of the patient with a functioning BRCA are not affected. The novel element of the treatment is the fact that it is the mutation causing cancer that is exploited to specifically kill the cancer; this reduces the side effects often experienced with traditional anti-cancer treatments. Clinical trials showed that Lynparza extends the length of
time during and after the treatment of cancer that a patient lives with the disease without the disease getting worse. Further clinical trials are currently taking place to see whether Lynparza could be used to treat other cancers. The approval of Lynparza means that both the University of Sheffield and Yorkshire Cancer Research will continue to benefit financially from the work in which they invested in the early 2000s. Valuable funds could be received by the charity, which will be invested to help cancer patients in Yorkshire. Charles Rowett, Chief Executive Officer at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We are incredibly proud that a treatment discovered in Yorkshire with funding from our charity, then developed with the help of Big Pharma, is now one step closer to the patient. It’s extremely rewarding to know that we have made a difference to the lives of people not only in Yorkshire, but across the world. “We have been supporting innovative research at our region’s universities and teaching hospitals for 90 years. The journey from lab to patient can be long, complicated and uncertain, so a successful outcome is a very exciting achievement. Not only this, but the financial benefits which flow from our original investment will undoubtedly have a huge benefit to our future mission to help more people avoid, survive and cope with cancer.”

有經歷過身邊的 至親突然患上癡 呆症的人才能明 白那種心碎。像 我這樣的年輕人沒有意識 到癡呆症能夠帶來的破壞 力和嚴重後果，因此我此 刻寫這篇文章希望提醒那 些像我一樣的年輕人，成 為癡呆症的“知情人”，讓 身處相同困境的同類們知 道他們並不孤單是多麼重 要。 癡呆症是由一些引起腦部 受損的疾病引起的，例如 中風，而最常見的癡呆症 病因是阿爾茲海默氏症， 俗稱老人癡呆。不同癡呆 症患者會呈現不同的病

醫生不會告訴你，當 爺爺突然出手打人的 時候你該怎麼做 三年前，奶奶還沒有去 世，因為爺爺被診斷出癡 呆症，而且有幾次中風， 所以我們相處的時間比較 頻繁，而那段時間是我們 人生中最寶貴的時刻。即 使在爺爺病情惡化之前我
們經常的相處的時間里， 我就已經發現他會時不時 想不起過去的事，沒有辦 法集中精神，沒有辦法下 決定。 看了好幾次醫生后，我們 終於被告知爺爺患了老 年癡呆，醫院給了我們一 張宣傳單包含著一些我們 需要知道的信息。雖然裡 面的信息很詳細，但是對 於我父母操心照顧剛剛失 去老伴的爺爺所承擔的一 切，這張傳單並沒有什麼 幫助。隨著爺爺的病情不 斷惡化，經歷過一系列醫 生會診和咨詢師的建議， 我意識到沒有人會告訴你 這種該死的病所帶來的真 正傷害。 醫生不會告訴你，當爺爺 突然出手打人的時候你該 怎麼做；不會告訴你，爺 爺每天去店裡賣報紙不給 錢就走的時候，你該怎麼 做；沒有人告訴你，你改 如何向店員解釋你的親人 患有癡呆症，而不是一個 小偷。 醫生也不會告訴你，當爺 爺忘記了自己患有癡呆 症，以為你們想擺脫麻煩 而把他送進療養院時，看

著你問你是不是還愛他的 時候你該怎麼做；他們不 會告訴你，你的親人很快 就會忘記你的姓名，甚至 忘記你是他的孫子這個事 實。沒有人告訴你該怎麼 跟身邊正在和健康的爺爺 奶奶聊電話的有著良好學 業成績和正常社交生活的 同齡人傾訴你的痛苦，向 他們解釋你的生活是如何 圍繞著一個辛勤勞動了一 輩子而如今卻無法和任何 親人溝通的病重患者。 醫生更不會告訴你，一旦 爺爺進入晚期，你需要抱 著最後一絲讓他自豪的希 望，把你拿到駕照和考上 大學的好消息一遍又一遍 地跟他宣佈。 癡呆症偷走了爺爺應該 和我、和我的家人我 的朋友一起度過的時 光，也因為我的親身 經歷，我相信目前英 國的年輕人們對這種 病的認識嚴重不足。 我們不需要照顧到每 一個在療養院里的老 年癡呆患者，但是我 們要明白，那個路過 你身邊看起來很困惑的老 人可能下一個就是你的親 人，他們或許正需要你的 幫助。 阿爾茲海默氏症協會和癡 呆症患者友愛協會可以為 你提供支持，幫助你更多 的了解這種無法治愈的疾 病，以及做一些力所能及 的小事給予患者關愛。不 管是幫助老人搭乘那輛正 確的巴士，還是對那位排 在你前面賣單的癡呆患者 多些耐，一些細小的舉動

《紙上談英》小編們採訪到寫唱歌手，Lucy Rose，她即將發佈第二張專 輯，作為她巡迴演唱會的其中一站，將于這個月尾來到Sheffield。 作者：Jessica Fogarty 非常高興你能在3月20日來Sheffield的Plug演 出，關於這場演出有什麼可以先透露的么？ 我會表演一首很應景的單曲“Sheffield”，還有9首 或者10首新專輯的歌。這也將是我第一次在舞台 上站著唱歌。如果你以前看過我的現場，你應該 會知道我總是坐在凳子上抱著自己的吉他，但是 這一次我準備好了，不再坐著，而是要站在舞台 中央面對我的聽眾們。 能夠在英國開巡迴演唱會的感覺如何？ 非常期待。每次看到門票售出的數字都大吃一 驚，因為到現在我都很難想象有人會掏錢來聽 我唱歌。 今年晚些即將發佈的第二張專輯，對此歌迷們應 該有什麼樣的期待？ 我已經發佈了一首單曲“Cover Up”，預示著這張 專輯代表我的轉型，跟我過去的第一張專輯很不 同，包含更多的電子樂，感覺更富有生機但是有 似曾相識。我加入了很多電子吉他伴奏，還加入 了我的第一次鋼琴伴奏。 最喜歡的表演場地在哪？ 越小越好，我比較怪，我喜歡跟聽眾們有眼神接 觸 ---- 可以幫助我跟他們產生互動。我不喜歡一 大堆人，每個人的臉你都看不清，我比較喜歡看 清楚每一張臉，所以可以產生親密近距離接觸的 演出場地是我最喜歡的。 怎麼形容你的音樂？ 大部分有輕快的節奏，有著讓你想跟著踏腳的 節拍。每一首歌都表達了不同情緒所以很難一 概而論。

將會在今年的音樂節演出么？ 還不確定，但是我很希望能在Glasto上表演。 如果不唱歌， 你會做什麼？ 任何其他事情，但是我從來都覺得我會走上歌手 這條路。我總是在寫歌，然後看能不能創造出什 麼。我不會覺得現在獲得的一切都理所當然，因 為你永遠不知道這樣的成功能持續多久。 誰是你的靈感來源？ 經典的老一派的歌曲作家，例如Carole和Neil Young。 你目前最引以為豪的成就是什麼？ 專輯的每首歌都是我自己寫的，我喜歡完全掌 控，所以對此我很自豪。 不工作的時候你都喜歡做什麼？ 我的生活并不搖滾，大部分時間會步行去 Cotswolds，我知道聽起來很無聊但是這是我喜 歡做的事。 關於巡迴演出和新專輯，粉絲們應該期待什麼？ 我還在等待，第一張專輯發表后，我有機會去到 遠至新加坡進行演出，我從來沒有想過英國意外 的地方還有人這麼喜歡我的音樂。所以希望第二 張專輯也能成功這樣我就能再到處旅行了。

音真棒，不知道現場會不會很 差勁”，實際上他的現場更棒， 而且他很幽默！ “All About That Bass”紅遍全 球，在英國Billboard已經連續 四周蟬聯冠軍。你寫這首歌的 時候有沒有一絲絲的感覺它會 這麼受歡迎？ 我們寫完“All About That Bass” 就冷藏起來了。我當時的想法 是“挺不錯的，嗯。不過應該沒 有人喜歡聽這種歌。也沒有流 行歌手會唱這首歌因為她們每 個都是零號身材，也沒有人唱 的同時說唱”。所以結果就是 我完全沒有頭緒這可能是我一 輩子最重要的一首歌了。而且 你們現在聽到的版本就是首輪 灌錄的版本，沒有合成沒有調 音，我當時在錄音棚唱完是什 麼樣，現在大街小巷放出來的 就是什麼樣。 有沒有在外面什麼地方聽到在 播放自己的歌？ 有啊，感覺很奇怪。我當時從 家裡出去吃壽司，一進門就聽 到“Lips Are Movin”，5分鐘后又 在放“Bass”，完了又回放“Lips” ，就這兩首一直在循環。然後 我才意識到“我真TMD出名！還 不是一般的出名”。 你第一次聽到自己的歌在電台 播放的時候在哪？ 嗯，“All About That Bass”被 電台播放的時候我和我的製作 人在納什維爾，我當時超級幸 福不是因為這是第一次，而是 因為“聽起來太棒了！因為之 前我還擔心在電台上因為失真 會聽起來很挫，但是效果卻這 麼好” ！ 新專輯《Title》中最喜歡的單 曲是哪首？ 每天都不同，現在是“Bang Dem Sticks”。
這張專輯中有機會跟John Legend合作感覺怎麼樣？ 那首是我製作的！我對自己感 到很自豪所以我想“我TMD從 13歲開始就當製作了，我必須 至少把一首作品放進去！”， 當我要求把“Bang Dem Sticks” 和“3am”加進去的時候，很多人 跟我說什麼“這不是Doo-wop” 啊，但是我不在乎，我是歌曲 作家，這些是我最喜歡的作 品所以我就是要把這些發佈 出去。 我的唱片公司同時也是John Legend的公司，於是我就把這 些歌曲和我的清唱視頻發給了 他們，他們沒告訴我就將這些 播放個John聽了，誰知道John 說我想唱這些歌。然後我就覺 得“誰？誰想唱來著？哦他啊， 行啊沒問題，就唱唄”。 專輯還有另外一個合作製作 人，Kevin Kadish，他自 己本身也寫了 很多非常好 的歌。例如 Stacie Orrico 的“Stuck”。 啊真的！我 本是是他的 死忠歌迷， 他還幫Jason Mraz寫過歌。 包括“Geek In The Pink”和“It’s all about the wordplay”，厲害吧！所以當時 我見到他就盡量地故作鎮靜， 跟他說“我會說唱”，他說“Okay” ，我說“我喜歡Doo-wop”，他 說“酷~”，然後我就說“可是我不 是2號身材”！然後我們就這件 事寫了首歌，看著問對方“你喜 歡么？”，他當時的反應是“我喜 歡！太喜歡了！”。我當然還是 他的粉絲，整張專輯錄製過程 中我都在提醒他“我還是十分崇 拜你”。感覺太瘋狂了，因為我 一直覺得大家沒有給予他足夠
的重視，所以現在的成功也歸 功於他一大部分，我很慶幸當 時跟他合作了。能夠在各種前 線派對上看到他實在是件很高 興的事情！ 挑一首你最喜歡不是自己的歌 曲？你希望是自己寫的那種？ 碧姐的“Halo”，太T.M.D 牛逼了！我今天早上還在 想呢，擦，你看看那些歌 詞！“Remember those walls I built, baby they’re tumbling down”；另外還有B寶 的“Mistletoe”，是我聽到過的 最好聽的聖誕歌！ 全世界到處跑的感覺怎麼樣？ 棒極了！像我這樣21歲的女 孩，沒有幾個能說自己去過澳 大利亞、德國、意大利、瑞典 和英國的，但是我可以很高興 的說我都去過了！一般這個年
紀的都最多能說我出國讀過 書，但她們最多也只呆過一個 地方。 目前最喜歡的是哪個國家？ 英國最美了！我可不是因為你 在採訪我我才這麼說的！某些 地方讓我想起德國，因為我在 這兩個國家看到的風景是一模 一樣的！但是德國的食物太突 出了！ 在這裡品嘗過一些美食沒？
還沒….. 除了酒店餐，但是很不 錯。 不知道為什麼，我們的食物總是 被吐槽為“黑暗料理”。 是麼？Nando’s太好吃了！我在酒 店就一直吃雞肉，因為很好吃， 吃完Nando’s酒店就感覺遜色了。 自從來了之後我一直吃雞肉。 有沒有帶上什麼你離不開的東西 陪你到處跑？ 我最近剛買了一個毛絨公仔叫 Paddles ---- 是一隻企鵝。好像 在Instagram上挺出名的。我去哪 都帶上他，可愛極了。還有我媽 媽手工製作的首飾，因為我父母 不喜歡跟著我到處跑，所以我帶 上這些好時刻想起他們。我媽媽 設計很多東西（指著自己的金戒 指，有三個環），這是代表著我 和兩個兄弟的。我爸爸給我做了 這個（指著手鏈），他在我心目 中是永遠的音樂家，然而他自己 卻經常說“我最想成為的是一個首 飾品設計家”。 作為一名音樂家，你爸爸肯定特 別為你感到自豪吧。 是啊，他以前是一個樂隊教師， 但是他總是告訴我“不管你將來做 什麼職業，一定要做你最擅長的 事情”，所以他自己也經常獲得一 些類似“最佳首飾設計”的獎，然 後我就被格萊美提名了，“年度最 佳單曲”，嗯所以，我想我達到爸 爸的要求了！ 下一步有什麼計劃？ 四月份開始巡迴演出。今年應 該是讓大家更深層次認識我的 一年，讓大家更了解Meghan Trainor是怎樣的一個人。對此我 非常期待。2014年已經是非常美 好的一年了……我想2015年會有 更多的特別演出，一些我還沒有 上過的節目例如Saturday Night L Mive eghan 之類的。 Trainor的首張專輯 《TITLE》現已發售。
